to just...

By Anna Gerlach Photos by Irene Sekulic @ Kreoidea and Nathalie Szmida Roos MILLIONS OF TONS OF WASTE IS THE RESULT OF LAZY DISPOSAL OF PLASTIC PACKAGING AND DRINKING BOTTLES, DESTROYING LARGE PARTS OF OUR OCEANS AND THE LIFE WITHIN THEM. CLIMATE CHANGE AND SEVERE ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE ARE CAUSED BY THE RELEASE OF CO2. AIR POLLUTION THROUGH GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS ALONE CLAIMS 7 MILLION LIVES A YEAR. AND STILL, OUR SOCIETY IS RULED BY FAST FOOD CHAINS, CHEAP GROCERY SHOPPING AND A WAY OF OLD THINKING THAT TRIGGERS THE CONSEQUENCES FOR NATURAL DISASTERS AND THE RAVAGING OF OUR PLANET.

The food industry has a massive impact on our environment. However, for our November cover story we are presenting to you an outstanding venue that certainly isn’t falling into that category.

16

"It's

A

ll of us should know by now what is going on in our world. However, actually doing something and getting active as a single person can be quite hard when in our daily lives we are almost "forced" to buy and consume products that are not promoting sustainability in any way. This is where multifaceted gastronomic concept BREATHE comes in. The venue represents a new culinary experience that Marbella has eagerly been anticipating. As the name already discloses, BREATHE is a place that lives within and without. With it’s modern urban architecture, encompassing natural elements such as fire, earth, water and air, it creates an energy that connects people, nature itself and fresh-thinking gastronomy. BREATHE comprises of a vast restaurant with its gastro bar, vertical gardens and patio on the main level, as well as, "Air," the raw food bar with its signature cocktails on the rooftop terrace and the soon to be open Ground Café. BREATHE is the place to go for any occasion, during the day or at night. Moreover, it features a large three-story underground parking, making itself more accessible than other venues. But there is more to this unique venue than meets the eye. Visiting BREATHE automatically enables you to contribute to caring for your environment and the planet. Having made sustainability and quality their top standards, BREATHE’s founders have created an innovative ground-source system, by which the entire venue can provide itself with energy through an underground pipe system where the water’s temperature is being regulated, also known as "Geothermal Energy Systems."

all very simple, real, delicious and healthy." However, its self-sufficiency is not the only thing that makes BREATHE so different from other restaurants. With a zero-waste policy and the importance of valuing the concept of honest food, BREATHE is not only a restaurant; it boasts one-of-a-kind architecture as well as a one-of-a-kind approach and mentality. With this incredible appreciation for our environment and strong sense of eco-responsibility, BREATHE represents an exclusive space that invites you to fully enjoy this green experience with exceptional customer service, the wowfactor plus the knowing that while you dine, brunch or sip on your cocktail, you are doing your part for the environment. But what is it exactly that BREATHE offers? How is its mission defined and what feelings does it aim to evoke in its customers? Our cover star, and BREATHE’s internationally recognized chef, Simone D’Elia has the answers to all these questions. Combining his incredible knowledge of honest, healthy and sustainable food, as well as different sourcing techniques from growing up in a family of cooks, Italian-born and raised Simone has made gastronomy not only his hobby and career but also a meaningful, creative passion. "I grew up in an Italian family with five brothers plus my mother who are all chefs like me. We used to enjoy cooking together as a family since a very young age. Remember, the Italian cuisine is not only consisting of pasta and pizza - with 107 provinces around the country, every single one of them features different dishes." He continues, "at the age of 15, I start my career as a cook at the renowned fish restaurant ’Sante Collesano’. There I was taught the basics from one of the best chef’s in the country. When my “teacher” sadly passed away, I started travelling around, gaining inspiration and knowledge in places like Sardinia

and London. In London especially, I got to know more about the Asian and French kitchens, discovering the essence of North European foods and trends. Afterwards, I taught myself all about the Argentinian and Mexican cuisines. This is when I started combining the different cultural influences and gaining more information about the products themselves. I started asking more questions, like where does the food come from, and what exactly are the production and sourcing processes?"

Bringing all those high standards and experiences with him, Simone D’Elia has a very distinct technique when it comes to working with and training the kitchen team. "All cooks at BREATHE are trained to have the same mindset: Being eco-friendly, as well as knowing how to recycle all waste and using every single part of the animal is what every cook must be aware of, to be able to work at BREATHE. This place is a true pioneer in Spain when it comes to sustainability: We aim to produce zero plastic, which means that our costs are slightly higher, but that’s nothing compared to the difference it makes."

"We aim to

plastic, which

costs are slightly

higher, but that's

D'Elia continues: "This is worth every cent and exactly what we stand for. Besides contributing to the decrease of plastic waste, we also source all our products from either organic farms, or, like our vegetables and fruits, from our own grounds. We have a field that supports us with a wide range of vegetables, besides having planted mango, lemon, figs and pear trees around the building that helps to provide us with the freshest fruits you can get locally."

nothing compared

"In Ibiza I gained experience working in some of the most prestigious Beach Clubs, offering a very modern concept that sourced vegetables and meat from local farms. When I came to Marbella to start working with this incredible team at BREATHE (whom have now become like a second family to me), my mind-set was already highly influenced by the idea of sustainable food. Now I get to combine my ideas with the international twist, using fresh and local ingredients that this particular region of Spain is so well-known for."

Not only does BREATHE grow its own fruits and veggies and boast a bakery where all pastries are made by hand, this place

BREATHE STANDS FOR AN EXTRAORDINARY EXPERIENCE WITH AN ORGANIC TOUCH, WHERE OUR PLANET IN ALL ITS VARIETY IS BEING RECOGNIZED AND REFLECTED.

offers a menu that will blow your mind! Simone told us more: "While BREATHE is based on a healthy and organic concept, in our bakery we are producing 85% of all that is served in an artisan way. Basic every-day dishes will include homemade granola, chia pudding with blueberry jam, seasonal fruits and a large selection of fresh juices and salads. However, we will always feature a huge variety, which means that there will always be new things on the menu to discover." Simone continues: "It’s all very simple, real, delicious and healthy. In the main restaurant on the ground level, we will mainly serve lunch and dinner, using only meat from a certain organic farm, where I personally went to see how the animals are kept and how exactly the meat is produced. We source our prawns locally for our signature dish combined with a special dressing named Agua Chile. Plus, our chicken is provided by one of the very few producers who let the animals grow naturally. It is incredible how organic and honest you can actually source food if you just make up your mind." And indeed, it can be so easy to eat organically, healthy and help the planet recover. Even when it comes to "Air," the venue’s sky bar, there are fantastic dishes and innovative cocktail choices: "In our sky bar, we will serve 70% fish, mainly in the form of tataki, ceviche, tartars, as well as oysters from France and Spain. Our ecological caviar comes from El Rio

20

Grande. All cocktails will have a basis that’s sourced from BREATHE itself, letting our customers explore an exotic and signature mix of fruits with a spirit from around the world. We also serve unique drinks, such as Sake and cocktails with Yuzu, Lychee and Pitahaya, reflecting the international gastronomic character of BREATHE. We basically want to make our customers feel the natural ambiance of BREATHE, combined with all these exotic international flavours and the knowing that while enjoying this, they are also showing environmental responsibility." BREATHE stands for an extraordinary experience with an organic touch, where our planet in all its variety is being recognized and reflected. The whole town is ready to experience this stunning venue, which represents the new place to be destination that has certainly been missing in Marbella! Lana Del Rey How Pure Authenticity Shaped A Muse by Anna Gerlach

22 22

E

Celebrity Spotlight

ver since she became the famous muse and superstar she is today, Lana Del Rey has been inspiring the industry and her listeners with her soulful voice, soft sound and authentic style, as well as undoubtedly touching lyrics. While at the beginning of her career, people told her that there was no market for her kind of music, she made it, becoming a strong female voice and muse of the 21st century with her fierce believe in staying true to her kind of "different" and authentic style. What’s behind her achievements, as well as her ability to maintain her truthful personality, is what we at Society wanted to find out a bit more about… The American artist, who was personally chosen to sing at Kanye West’s and Kim Kardashian’s wedding, isn’t the type to make any compromises when it comes to her music. At the age of 11, Lana saw the video of Curt Cobain’s "Heartshaped Box" on MTV and decided she wanted to become a singer. However, first she seemed to live a normal life, not really believing that the American Dream would at one point become a true story for her. At the age of 18, she moved to New York City, she started singing at open mic nights and playing at shows in Williamsburg. While her inspiration was shaped by huge male legends such as Frank Sinatra, Bob Dylan and Elvis, she has created her own very feminine musical style out of these inspirational figures.

"Just because I do my hair big does not mean I’'m a product. If anything, I'm doing my own hair, stuffing my own fu**ing stuffing in there if I have a beehive."

She wrote her debut song "Video Games" on her sofa, watching her boyfriend at the time playing video games. Never would she have thought that those personal lyrics would actually reach the world and reflect the basis for her astonishing career. Besides Video Games, the following singles "Blue Jeans" and "Born to Die," represented a trilogy of artworks, which referred to her own personal relationship that had ended, as well as to her way of honouring the memories of the past. In "Lust for Life," she was singing the lyrics, "I have nothing much to live for." As all her lyrics take inspiration from her own personality and life experiences, she here wrote about a particularly hard time in her life. In an interview with Pitchfork, she stated:

23

Celebrity Spotlight

"I spent my whole life reasoning with crazy people. I felt like everyone deserved a chance, but they don’t. Sometimes you just have to step away without saying anything." Regarding her piece "Ultraviolence," possibly one of the most famous modern songs of this century, Lana brings attention to the difficulty and tragedy of domestic violence. She said,

"Having someone be aggressive in a relationship was the only relationship I knew. I’m not going to say that that [lyric] was 100 percent true, but I do feel comfortable saying what I was used to was a difficult, tumultuous relationship, and it wasn’t because of me. It didn’t come from my end."

"I’m always being myself. They don’t know what authentic is. If you think of all the music that came out until 2013, it was super straight and shiny. If that’s authentic to you, this is going to look like the opposite." 24

Images sourced via Facebook / @lanadelrey

However, the only way Lana Del Rey gives a glimpse of her personal life to the public is through her lyrics. And while her honest songs have received both high acknowledgement, as well as negative criticism and disregard from the media, she always has stayed true to her own uniqueness:

Celebrity Spotlight

She continues, "Just because I do my hair big does not mean I’m a product. If anything, I’m doing my own hair, stuffing my own fu**ing stuffing in there if I have a beehive. Music was in a super weird place when I became known, and I didn’t really like any of it." Besides the beauty of bringing back intimate feelings and truth into the world of music, combined with acoustic guitar tunes and delicate beats, Lana Del Rey had one global consumer trend on her side which certainly made it easier for her to conquer the market: "The Allurement of Authenticity." Voted as one of the top trends of 2017, its roots were already set years back when photoshop, make up and the digital reality all became too "fake" for the consumer market. Women, in particular, would either disregard the award winning superstar due to a lack of being able to connect to her lyrics, or because of the vulnerability she was singing about; or they would fall in love her true-to-herself kind of style because they were able to connect to her real life stories and feel with her: "I can tell you that what I have done for women is tell my own story, and that’s all anyone can do." Whether people do or do not connect with the truth that lies behind her songs, imagery and videos, the fact that she has never been bothered by how people would judge her, is what has made the mega muse what she is today. Singing about life, love, passion and the darkness of reality resulted in her winning 23 awards to date, including two MTV Europe Music Awards for the category "Best Alternative," as well as Echo Awards, Brit Awards and another Billboard Award. She has shown to the world that it can never be wrong to be you and express yourself, which is one of the main reasons we celebrate Lana Del Rey as one of the most aspirational figures of the 21st century.

November is such a boring month… Wrong! Take a look at our top picks of must-reads this month and you will be thrilled with what this autumn has to offer! From Michelle Obama’s memoires, a wonderful story based on some little lies over to beautiful poetry about how to get over difficult times. This month is full of great books that will keep you occupied!

1.

Becoming

Michelle Obama has certainly emerged as one of the most iconic and interesting women of our era. Representing the first African-American First Lady, this month she is launching her book, her memoir, reflecting about the experiences that shaped her in a very intimate, powerful and readerinviting way.

MUST READ

From her childhood spent on the South Side of Chicago, over to her time as an executive, besides being a mother, she describes her success, as well as her disappointments in her public and private life. Here is the full story of Michelle Obama, written in her own words; warm, wise and deeply personal.

2.

Little White Lies

'Little White Lies', written by Goodreads Author, Jennifer Lynn Barnes is a compelling layered mystery, telling the story of former auto mechanic Sawyer Taft, who is slowly finding herself in her grandmother’s society of debutantes. Besides shaping her life in a completely new way, and her outer appearance (with huge makeovers, big dresses and therefore a bigger ego,) she builds friendships which are taken over by scandals and dangerous secrets. Coming into the high society, Sawyer quickly discovers skeletons in her family’s closet. On her search for the truth about her background, she tries to navigate her way through new friends and powerful parents… In short: Gilmore Girls meets Gossip Girl, so get yourself ready for a humorously written novel with some good old insult-laden compliments.

3.

The Strength In Our Scars

When you google the author of this fantastic poetry book, Bianca Sparacino, you will find an endless list of beautiful quotes from her books. Her newest work "The Strength In Our Scars," is a reminder to us all that no matter what we’re going through, or had to go through in the past, and no matter where we find ourselves on our healing journey: We are strong. Through strong poetry, prose and encouragement her words reveal a lot of compassion and peace. This is the perfect book for you if you can relate to experiences of moving on, self-love and learning how to heal. All of us have been there - this book will show you that whatever dark past has shaped your character, it has also carved light into your soul.

nless you've had your head under a particularly large rock for a particularly long time, it's very likely you've experienced a Disney product first hand. Perhaps you've cried when Mufassa get's all circle-of-life'd by his own brother in the Lion King. Maybe you've been whacked round the face by your son wielding a plastic Buzz Lightyear toy. Perhaps you've had some measure of revenge by throwing up on that same son on Space Mountain. Whatever your exposure, it's probably no secret to you that Disney are big, but you may not have realised just how big....

Founded 95 years ago as an animation studio, it wasn't long before the brainchild of Walter Elias Disney left its first indelible mark on popular culture. In 1928's black and white short Steamboat Willie, a tune-whistling, rump-shaking, parrot-bothering rodent named Mickey first captured the public's imagination, alongside his mouse-missus Minnie. Followed shortly thereafter by Donald Duck, Pluto, Goofy and co., Disney's popularity grew year on year, truly crystalizing in 1937 with the worldwide smash Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. Unlike 7/8ths of its core cast, the animated film was full length (Disney's first) and became the highestearning sound film of all time. Using profits from Snow White, Walt and his partner/ brother Roy expanded the Californian animation studios onto a huge lot, in-housing all elements of production in a truly creative hub.

notwithstanding), but Treasure Island, Mary Poppins and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea were indicative of their newfound live-action clout and in 1955 Walt made his first foray into the world of theme parks. To this day, they don't get much bigger or better than California's Disneyland (they do get much bigger and better than Paris's Disneyland....). The most popular theme park in the world (the U.S. one), with more than 700 million attendees to date, Disneyland is a place where the imagination can truly soar.... Honestly, you can't imagine how much it bloody well costs for three hot dogs and two large Pepsis!

Disneyland is a place where the imagination can truly soar.... Honestly, you can't imagine how much it bloody well costs for three hot dogs and two large pepsis!

The 40's and 50's saw them releasing such cartoon classics as Pinocchio, Bambi, Cinderella, Fantasia, Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland. Between 1942 and 1945 they were even commissioned by the U.S. Government, Army and Navy to produce war propaganda. This generally took the form of instructional graphics, training shorts and pro-America films.... It seems someone beat them to their original plan to simply draw a stupid moustache on any and all images of Hitler. The following decades may have seen a few less animated benchmarks (The Jungle Book and Aristocats

Though Walt died in 1966, plans were already afoot for something new, and in October 1971, under the stewardship and continued investment of his brother, Walt Disney World opened in Orlando, Florida. Roy himself barely had time to enjoy its golf courses, luxury accommodation, shopping villages and amusement rides, unfortunately shuffling off a mere two months later – nevertheless, it soon became the world's premier vacation destination.

Meanwhile however, Disney experienced a string of critical misfires and commercial duds, their relevance in cinema beginning to erode. Salvation came in the 80's with a raft of popular live action films including Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Three Men and a Baby, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids and Pretty Woman - the original idea for a single film where Richard Gere competes against three men and a shrunken (already small) baby for the affections of an animated prostitute rabbit was wisely split amongst several distinct screenplays... The 90's produced yet more animated classics in the shape of The Lion King, Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast, but it was 1995's Toy Story which really changed the game for both Disney and the filmgoing public. Produced by tech company Pixar, the world's first computer animated feature film's vibrant visuals turned what would otherwise have been your typical, everyday story of a cowboy-toy-andspaceman-toy-coming-to-life-whenhumans-aren't-watching-to-ride-ondinosaurs-and-radio-controlled-carsand-go-on-adventures.... into a true crowd-pleasing classic and innovative leap forward in animation. Whilst Pixar produced, Disney partnered on the film, announcing their intention to

co-create five more such digitally animated films over the next decade. A true hit factory was born, with Pixar's brand soon synonymous with both stunning animation and impeccable storytelling. In 2006, under the stewardship of recent CEO Robert “Bob” Iger, Disney bought Pixar outright for $7.4 billion. Clearly feeling there was still too much loose change rattling around his pockets, Iger then steered Disney to acquire Marvel Entertainment in 2009 for $4 billion. The latter company had recently secured its first bona-fide commercial slam dunk in 2008's Iron Man and Iger rightly anticipated the huge franchisebuilding potential for the superhero brand and its vast roster of spandexclad characters. Today, Disney-owned Marvel Studios is about the safest bet in the entertainment industry, pumping out enormous hit after enormous hit whilst rival studios play catch up.

reinvigorated with a bevy of monster hits including Frozen, Tangled, Zootopia and Moana. Not one to rest on his laurels, Iger has just landed a real whopper, with the ink still wet on a $71 billion (you read that right... unless you read it as something other than seventy-one billion f@*k!ng dollars) deal to buy Fox, home of moneyspinning movie and TV properties such as Avatar, The Simpsons, X-Men and

Not content with owning almost anyone in a cape, Disney then looked to a galaxy far, far away and in 2012, purchased Lucasfilm and with it the rights to Star Wars. Whilst some initially scoffed at the eye-watering $4 billion price-tag for a stagnating property, business analysts tipped their hats at Disney, who soon recovered half that amount in ticket sales for The Force Awakens alone. Factor in the subsequent success of Rogue One and The Last Jedi and the near-limitless potential of the brand, and Iger had once more proved his unswerving savvy in the art of creative content acquisition.

errr... Deadpool – How the home of Mickey Mouse plans to incorporate a crass, foul-mouthed, albeit extremely successful sociopath into their familyfriendly brand remains to be seen ….. although they managed to do business with Rupert Murdoch to acquire the rights, soooo....

Meanwhile, Disney's homegrown animation division has been

Iger has just landed a real whopper, with the ink still wet on a $71 billion (you read that right... unless you read it as something other than seventy-one billion f@*k!ng dollars) deal to buy Fox, home of money-spinning movie and TV properties such as Avatar, The Simpsons, X-Men and errr... Deadpool

In the age of recognisable IP and “shared universe” franchises, the potential Disney now has for combining formerly disparate properties and exploiting those that work is obscene. Not only that, but their capacity for cross-platform

promotion (TV shows, comics, movies, news sites, theme parks, theatre productions...) means their evergrowing roster of family favourites are becoming ever more ubiquitous. The last decade has seen a raft of incredibly popular live action remakes of their animated favourites and Pixar sequels with surprisingly nondiminishing returns, both financially and critically. Provided the bar remains high, audiences and shareholders alike appear to be benefitting - Under Iger's watch, the company's market cap has quadrupled to £175 billion, with 150 million attendees to its various theme parks last year alone. No small part of their value comes from merchandise, a huge side-industry to their multiplying silver and small screen offerings - The more characters under the Mouse House's roof, the more of their plastic counterparts are likely strewn under yours … either because you've got kids or you're a MASSIVE Star Wars nerd. Next up, Iger's got no less than Netflix and Amazon in his crosshairs, with Disney's own streaming service pencilled for a 2019 launch. Utilizing Fox's considerable catalogue of content and 30% stake in streaming giant Hulu alongside their own huge portfolio, Disney plan to muscle right in against the big cheeses for the holy grail of content delivery. At this stage, only a fool would bet against their ability to succeed. And just to think, one cartoon prostitute rabbit, three blokes and a shrunken baby and it could all have been such a different story.....

he world was in shock when in September, right after Donatella Versace unveiled her SS19 collection for Versace at Milan Fashion Week, it was announced that the luxury retailer had been bought by Michael Kors Holdings Limited - also known as Capri Holdings. And although the American brand bought a large stake of $2.12 billion in the Italian house there is no need to worry as Donatella will still oversee Versace’s creative process. In an interview with Dazed, the designer stated: “This is a very exciting moment

for Versace." She continues, “It has been more than 20 years since I took over the company along with my brother Santo and daughter Allegra. I am proud that Versace remains very strong in both fashion and modern culture.” What Mr. Kors bought is not the brand itself, but its trademark; the name "Versace," adds a high amount of value to Capri Holdings. Capri plan to increase the Versace stores from 200 to 300 globally, and plans to increase their revenue in accessories and footwear from 35 to 60 percent. Now 80% of the Versace brand belongs to the Kors group. And Versace wasn’t the first brand to be bought by Capri: Just last year, the company purchased Jimmy Choo for a cool $1.2 billion.

his year’s America’s Music Awards were lit up by Taylor Swift’s futuristic-looking, edgy outfits consisting of metallic thigh-high boots and a glittering mini dress. That day Taylor won an incredible four awards in the categories Artist, Pop/Rock Female Artist, Pop/Rock Album and Tour! She even broke Whitney Houston’s record of the most won categories by a woman at the AMAs. After performing "I Did Something Bad" on stage, she went to make her acceptance speech. But she wasn’t merely making this speech, Taylor actually broke the silence about the American mid-term elections and encouraged everyone to go and vote. "This award and every single award given out tonight were voted on by the people, and you know what else is voted on by the people?" Taylor asked the audience. "It is the midterm elections on November 6. Get out and vote. I love you guys."

However, Taylor’s first foray into politics already led to a large increase in vote registrations in the US! After she posted a shout out to vote on Instagram, there was a spike of 65.000 new voters within the spectrum of the next 24 hours! We can only say: Good job on that one and congratulations, Taylor!

What followed was a statement by President Donald Trump, saying he liked Taylor Swift’s music "about 25% less now" because she was obviously supporting the Democrats. What a surprise - not.

Following his wifey Kim Kardashian’s footsteps, Kanye West recently visited President Donald Trump in the White House. His mission? To discuss plans regarding prison reform, manufacturing and gang violence, especially in Chicago where Kanye grew up. As confirmed by the White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the controversial rapper got an invite to have lunch with the president, as well as with his son-in-law, Jared Kuchner. During the bizarre meeting, during which Kanye was wearing his “Make America Great Again” cap, the two had endless conversations in front of press and members of The White House, followed by an old mate’s hug. What can we say? Another controversial encounter, President Trump.

ix years have passed since popstar Rita Ora released her tribute album "ORA". However Rita has remained a much talked about figure within the world of music. However, now on 23rd November, Rita will finally drop her sophomore album "Phoenix." And as polite as she is, Rita Ora apologized to her fans for the wait, stating to the media: “This album is a true labour of love, and it was important for me to do it my way,” she said. “I’m so appreciative of the love and support from those who worked with me on the record and allowed me to create something I’m really proud of. They gave me the space and freedom to create something from my heart.” In June she did release the single "Girls", featuring pop legends Cardi B, Bebe Rexha and Charlie XCX. But the track

received negative critics from the LGBTQ community and while Cardi B and Rexha defended their new song, Rita showed understanding and apologized on Twitter: “I have had romantic relationships with women and men throughout my life and this is my personal journey. I am sorry if how I expressed myself in my song has hurt anyone. I would never intentionally cause harm to other LGBTQ people or anyone." "Let You Love Me," is the first song to be released from Phoenix, giving us a better idea of what is set to follow. With soft tunes and emotional lyrics, combined with an upbeat party vibe, the song definitely leaves us wanting more.

anksy's most famous artwork used to be "Girl With Balloon". After being sold at Sotheby’s for £1.02 million, the unexpected happened: The artwork destroyed itself by a shredder installed in its frame. Who did this? Of course it was Banksy himself. However, while the anonymous artist initially intended this incident to be a sign of protest, showing his disregard towards modern society, the piece’s worth seems to have increased by an impressive 20 percent. Right after the incident, Banksy quoted Picasso on his Instagram, saying: “The urge to destroy is also a creative urge”. Typical Banksy, either you love him or you hate him…

Generation Y

The term ’Nostalgia’, in the Oxford dictionary is defined as, "a sentimental longing or wistful affection for a period in the past." It is also a feeling, an emotion that many people experience, especially nowadays, ever since the turn of the century. "Back in the day…," I hear people saying. What follows are great stories about hippie campervan tours and protests for freedom and liberty in the 70’s, or songs about girls dancing the ’twist’ in petticoat skirts in the 60’s. I am listening to epic tales about great rock bands from the 80’s or being told about the 90’s, where children were still playing in the gardens, running wild and free, instead of sitting in front of their iPads, skyping and chatting in a distorted reality.

38

I

I am a 90’s child and sometimes I wish I was born in another period of time. In another decade, where social media was an unknown subject to the world and where Trump, smart phones and remixes of old songs were yet far away. Being a millennial, or also known as a child of the gen Y, I belong to a generation that is said to never be as rich as their parents. But besides facing financial struggle, being born into a workforce during the ’Great Recession,’ having to deal with way more competition and social expectations than any generation before us, we are also said to be the ones with the highest rates of depression, stress and suicide. How many young superstars get into drugs and die nowadays because they cannot handle their role in this world and the pressure forced upon them? Amy Winehouse, Avicii and Mac Miller just to name a few. Psychologically, we appear to be spoiled or even narcissistic. However, our biggest problem seems to be our inability to handle the average level of stress in life. We are more likely to underachieve due to a bad job economy and extremely high expectations when it comes to academic achievement. But besides the pressuring circumstances of the 21st century, what else has caused us to be defined as "lost"? A lot has been caused by education and parenting. Most of our parents were born in the generation X following the baby boomers, a demographic cohort which author Tiffanie Darke describes as: “The jobfor-life boomers with good pensions, who are rich in both time and cash." Us, she describes as, "the anxious millennials who are financially less secure, but tech-savvy." Our parents were born into a generation where investing in their children’s education was a priority, but they were also very overprotective and as a result many of us didn’t learn about commitment, obligation, and

responsibility. Moreover, many of us were raised by nannies or anyone else but our parents, when both parents were working and mothers stopped staying at home. What did that cause? A high rate of neglect, which is one of the most common reasons for child trauma.

me. So wake me up when it's all over. When I'm wiser and I'm older. All this time I was finding myself. And I didn't know I was lost."

Yes, our generation feels lost. However, we have something inside that makes us very positive and special. We believe in sustainability, we still want to change the world Those are just a few of the many for the better and we strongly fight reasons for us to feel lost and for equal rights. We are supporting overwhelmed with our lives. While Bryan Adams was singing, "those were the best days of my life," lost superstars such as Avicii make us sink into a nostalgic and depressive state with lyrics such as: "Feeling my way through the darkness, guided by a beating heart. I can't tell where the journey will end, but I know where to start. They tell me I'm too young to understand. They say I'm caught up in a dream. Well, life will pass me by if I don't open up my eyes. ating can get pretty rough. No seriously, we all know that dating is a lot of work, especially for women. Going on a date means having to put in a lot of time, effort and stress. But first we have to find someone who we actually want to date, which might even be the hardest part. Thank god that dating apps like Tinder etc. exist today, because while we are all way too occupied with skipping through social media and our digital life, it has been getting more and more difficult to meet someone in reality, whether it be on the train, at the beach, or even in a library. However, dating on Tinder & co. can be exhausting. Some guys just want to meet for one thing only, others are the too-niceguys and the rest are just not our type or way too arrogant. But then, when we finally match with someone who seems like he or she could be the one, the real work begins… small talk. The initial couple of texts will either impress or make us realize that there is zero connection. However, what appears to be boring, or too intense, might not actually unveil their true character traits. People come across differently in this digital era and if we’d just met him or her in real life, we might find a completely different person in front of us. But that, unfortunately, is how the dating world works today. Swipe left or right, try to connect, if it doesn’t work, delete the contact. Easy, simple, tragic. Is that really what love should be like? Anyways, let’s get back to the point. Before our first date with someone who we have probably never met before, the real stress starts: "What am I going to wear? What topics should we be talking about? Where shall we meet and what if he or she is absolutely not my type and I just wasted my time here? Then I would have to move on to the next one and play the whole game over and over again…" Probably every one of us has been at this point somewhere in our dating life, or perhaps you were a lucky one who found your true love in high school or at work or god knows where. Well, if not and you’re stuck in the world of singletons,

REASONS

WHY WE

Date BY ANNA GERLACH

you possibly have already asked yourself these questions. What am I looking for? What if I never find the one for me? You might even be asking yourself these questions if you just ended a long-term relationship, which makes it even harder to find trust in another potential partner. The reasons why we date, however, are truly simply though and seem to be necessary for us to be happy human beings. Of course you can be the strong single woman who does it all on her own. But there are some evolutionary urges within us that cannot be ignored. First, there is our longing for chemistry, a strong physical attraction. While this point obviously can be fulfilled by a sexual-only kind of relationship, it won’t fulfil us on its own. The second one is the connection on a soulful level. You can have lots of friends and amazing family members, but someone who is your partner, lover, best friend and also the person with whom you can share literally anything that goes through your mind defines a relationship with a person that will take your happiness to a whole other level. You can be single for years, having fun, fooling around, but at one point you will most likely reach a stage where all of it doesn’t seem enough anymore. Number three is simple, but probably the hardest one to find. Connecting with someone on the level of soulmateship. Have you ever truly been in love? Statistics show that many people never even get to this point in their lives. Feeling true love doesn’t wait for you around the next corner. The unbreakable, untouchable feeling of love is what makes us go through all this dating chaos and we will not stop until we finally find this "wow" factor in a person who we decide we want to share our lives with. From my own experience, if you truly want to be in a relationship and your goal is to find true love, it eventually will happen. After many fails and anticipation, the only thing you can do is keep on going. The true reason why we date lies within ourselves: The true love we are able to share as human beings is what we want to share with the soulmate that has to be somewhere in this world of 7.4 billion people. Each cannabinoid has a different effect on the body. THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) is the psychoactive cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant that can give you the feeling of being high, this is the most common sensation associated with cannabis. CBD and CBG are non psychoactive compounds of the cannabis plant which have received individual case study and general scientific support in regard to the alleviation and assistance of certain common medical dispositions. not discovered the fact that each and every one of us has a system within our body called the Endocannabinoid system (ECS) which reacts to stimulation from the cannabinoid compounds contained in this magical plant. Dr Raphael Mecholeum (the man who identified THC as the compound that caused the psychoactive sensation) discovered the endocannabinoid system (ECS) within the human body. The ECS regulates a number of these functions including sleep, appetite, pain and the immune response system. The body produces endocannabinoids which are neurotransmitters that bind to cannabinoid receptors - CB1 and CB2 - that are found throughout the body and central nervous system. When the phytocannabinoids of the hemp/cannabis plant and the endocannabinoids in the body interact they help maintain the body’s function and achieve homeostasis. It is for this reason that taking full spectrum CBD products can assist greatly towards attaining a balanced state of wellbeing for both body and mind.

THE JOURNEY TOWARDS MY ‘ BELIEF IN THE LEAF’ We have all lost someone or at least heard of someone losing their life to cancer. In 2016 I lost two people I knew, both were mothers of four. One of them was lucky enough to prolong her life by a few months with the use of cannabis oil. My research into the hemp/cannabis plant started here by engaging with websites and forums, and purchasing books online in order to delve deeper into the subject. The hemp plant and cannabis plant are of the same species but are very different in looks and appearance (much like a lion and a domestic cat are in the same family). I gathered information regarding the healing properties of the plant. I started researching into the benefits of medical uses of the cannabis plant towards healing various serious and untreatable conditions. In March 2017 my friends flew over from New York, they had just invested in a company in California where it was legal to grow. They were creating various products which were being used to help treat a variety of serious medical conditions. The green rush had already hit the US with some force and the government had begun legalising the sale of cannabis in numerous states. The industry was growing fast and my contact was sure that Europe was going to follow suit quickly. The climate in Spain and in California are similar therefore perfectly for growing hemp.

home cooked meals to make ends meet to give me time to construct a solid business plan. I have always been a keen cook, making everything from scratch, and so introducing hemp seeds to the flapjacks and protein powder to my cakes was a great way to integrate my ideas. I have always recognised the importance of food, nourishment and wellbeing, and whilst breastfeeding my first born son, my admiration for all things natural and the belief in a healthy balance between mind body and spirit enhanced all the more. During this road of discovery I met a number of weird and wonderful people within the industry; doctors and scientists here in Spain making their own experiments with the cannabis plant. I investigated the legal issues within this country, I knew there was a laid back culture in regards to cannabis but needed to know what was available to me as far as industry was concerned. I contacted a lawyer with experience in the hemp industry and this is where things began to progress. The CBD market had already kicked off in a big way in the UK, there was more awareness and the media was making references to the cannabis industry. There was a case of a mother bringing cannabis into the UK to treat patients with epilepsy. So I knew that there was a market to enter and began to think that finally my marketing and business degree was going to be of value! CBD was legal and I needed to know how to get involved.

I SAW THE MARKET OPENING UP, I JUST NEEDED TO FIND MY WAY IN… Excited with fresh aspiration that the movement was taking place I went to the cannabis fair in Barcelona in March 2018. This was full of the most amazing stalls selling everything you could imagine, from seeds to tractors and machinery. Music was blaring from the coffee shop stalls and everyone was having a great time. Peace and love vibes flowed all around the arena as did the aroma of cannabis in the air. The atmosphere was great but the CBD products were disappointing. None of the stalls that were present had any products that were made on Spanish soil. The samples I bought were all grown on an industrial scale made for mass market production. The branding was nowhere near as polished as those available in the USA and there was very little product choice or information regarding where it was from or how it was produced. I had found an opening in the market. Why was there nothing organic? Why was there such a lack of information regarding the soil or mineral content? All I kept thinking was “I can do this better”.

MAKING IT HAPPEN… I returned from Barcelona on a mission to start something locally in Málaga. I drove up and down the coast visiting farms that grew hemp or CBD strains of cannabis. Sometimes it was a bit daunting as many were not growing legally and either not having obtained the correct licence or were not using the correct laboratory facilities and procedures to make their product. It was a pretty hair-raising time and, being a mother of two beautiful boys, I knew I had to be careful who I became involved with. On the other hand, being female got me access to places that were normally off limits and I got to see first-hand what was going on in these particular places.

Someone then put me in contact with a large land owner in Marbella. They had told me that they had heard of my project and would give it to me at a good price, starting with a simple deposit. This was 25,000m2 of land unused for seventeen years which meant the soil I KNEW THAT IF I COULD USE MY should be nutrient-dense WEALTH OF KNOWLEDGE AND MY and therefore a good plot CONNECTIONS IN THE USA, I COULD to begin cultivation.

CREATE AND DELIVER A SUPERIORQUALITY, ORGANIC, SPANISH BRAND ONTO THE MARKET

I felt empowered. I knew a lot more than any of the people I was meeting; even the managers of the stalls couldn’t answer all my questions. I knew that if I could use my wealth of knowledge and my connections in the USA, I could create and deliver a superior-quality, organic, Spanish brand onto the market, I would have my dream business.

I looked at the land and knew immediately; I needed to sow hemp. I searched for people that could help me which lead me to get in touch with the smoking club in Marbella, Sticky Fingers. This was a private member’s club run by a man who had helped prolong his father’s life with the use of cannabis oil. It was through this club that I met my potential growers. There were lots of people now buzzing around me having heard I was looking for land and trying to start up a project. A friend from London introduced me to a scientist from the UK who worked with hemp specialising in the functions of cannabinoids and terpenes and their impact on the body and mind. He had been researching into CBG and impressed me with his knowledge so I arranged for him to fly over to start up the operation with me. The land I had previously viewed became unavailable plus the security wasn’t up to scratch. I was then offered some land in Almogia, again problems arose. I was starting to face barriers, but that would not prevent me from moving forward.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

I had the scientist flying over from the UK but no land to work on. Dilemma. I surfed the internet where I found a page for an area in Málaga which was encouraging entrepreneurs into the region. Bingo, I would bring my idea to them. More obstacles arose (wrongly scheduled meetings, language barriers, people not showing up, etc.), but nothing I couldn't climb over in order to keep going. At one meeting with the mayor, architect and agriculture minister, and my scientist who didn’t speak any Spanish, I literally had to explain what the hemp plant was, what it could be used for and the fact it looked like cannabis (a banned substance) and they had no previous knowledge of any of it. I explained that by growing this plant we could bring potential employment into the town. I showed them my plan and tried to get them to understand what we could actually do with this amazing product from construction, medicine and even bio fuel and compare our growth in comparison to France who is currently the largest cultivator of hemp in Europe. They told me that it would be eight months before we could have any feedback… this was a big knock back and I was becoming deflated. The government route was going to take up to three years to get going, so I would have to pursue other avenues until this time or simply stop.

IN THE FACE OF ADVERSITY…LEARN MORE The European Hemp Association was holding their annual event in Germany so I booked to go to the two-day conference. These were the people that run the industry in Europe and I knew that this would be the best place to get information regarding the equipment, new processes, laws and legislation. Cologne was incredible and I was lucky enough to meet the head of the Indian hemp association. He informed me that they were cultivating hemp on 200,000 hectors in India; they are even constructing the first shiva temple of its kind made entirely from hemp. I am lucky enough to have been invited to its grand opening. I met the head of the Irish hemp association who was cultivating on 400 acres in Ireland and had a wonderful new hemp product range being launched. They were all amazingly helpful giving advice on seeds and the pitfalls of growing this ancient crop, I listened and learned. There I also met one of my suppliers who had just invested in a farm and laboratory in Spain. The seminars were amazing and gave me a better understanding of the challenges that the industry faced in terms of people’s perceptions and the ever changing legislation that impacted the industry.

The more I learned the more I realised I had yet to learn, and so I continued to research into hemp, our climate, what resources were best to use, and what problems could impact our business. I got invited to Valencia by the head of the Indian hemp association to meet up with the largest cultivator of hemp in Spain. He was cultivating 5,000 hectares and doing incredible research with medical grade cannabis as well as hemp. After my trip to Valencia I travelled to Ireland to compare cultivation procedures. I was invited to look at their facilities and see their hemp products, from oil to cloth. It was a truly incredible experience, and invaluable in expanding my knowledge of the field.

Testimonial

BECOMING AT ONE WITH THE FIELD… On my return to Málaga I got in touch with two farms already growing organic hemp. The farmers here had similar beliefs to mine and I decided to work with them. I was so lucky that they were striving to produce wonderful organic hemp but hadn’t yet realised its potential. I became immersed in the whole process; I watched them sow the seeds, learned about threatening pests (as no pesticides were used), became part of the harvesting process; making sure the right flowers are selected for processing is time consuming and tricky for the untrained eye. Once you learn about the land and the minerals, you have a greater understanding of the whole process and, for me, it became part of my soul. Once the plant had been dried it then went for processing to a fully qualified lab to ensure its consistency in optimum quality, I would settle for nothing but the best. All processes combine the ancient growing methods with advanced scientific techniques to ensure that we are getting the best from nature and retain all the plant’s wonderful qualities.

THE RESULT… During the summer I started giving my product to friends and family to help combat an array of conditions from which they were suffering, from anxiety to inflammation. The feedback was astounding; I was truly being able to help people. My full spectrum CBD & CBG formula was enriched with all the right minerals and it worked! The terpenes that my scientist had suggested to add actually make people feel better. The choice of using organic olives from the province was also a success. A local, organically-made tincture from Malaga was created, and now with this success we are in the process of making a range of capsules and creams too.

I suffered from ulcerative colitis for many years, and I had an ileostomy installed 12 years ago. After spending so many sleepless nights throughout the years, I was introduced to CBD oil from the angel on earth: Clare. This oil has changed my life in many ways, I feel complete, like all the pieces have been connected together inside me. Forever grateful... - Paul Foster

So this is where I am at, I can now offer a wonderful range of beautifully crafted, organic hemp products rich in CBD & CBG, produced locally in the province of Málaga. I hope you enjoy them as much I did making them for you.

RETIRE THE HASSLE-FREE WAY

D

id you know the average homeowner spends anywhere from 1% to 4% of his or her home's value on annual upkeep, but if your home is older, you're probably approaching the higher end of that range. If you’re considering retiring, our guess is that unless you invented a social media platform or a must-have app and are retiring in your thirties, you probably fall into a slightly more mature category thus maintaining your property yourself could prove to be more challenging, meaning you most likely have to shell out for all kinds of maintenance charges. Well, imagine if you never had to pay another service or maintenance cost again? As an expat in Marbella our retirement options can be limited making returning to the UK a very attractive option for many. If moving to another country isn’t enough to worry about, purchasing a home and all that goes with that can seem very overwhelming. That’s where The Hawthorns retirement communities step in, taking the hassle out of retiring. Hawthorns ensures that there are no extra service costs, maintenance charges and importantly no exit fees, which can be quite punitive with some developers and operators. You can move in straightaway with a rental and rent out your existing property (if you have one) until sold, or as The Hawthorns are so confident that you’ll love the community and lifestyle you can also use the one-month trial offer (Try Before You Rent), giving you full flexibility around your personal preferences. FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

We are once again joined by Reflections’ celebrity hairstylist Jonathan Yeadon, whose A-List clientele includes Victoria Beckham and Simon Cowell. Jonathan is loved not only for his mindblowing colouring skills but his outrageous personality as well.

A Colourful Theory This month Jonathan discusses how hair colours can make a difference in how someone is perceived or treated.

I

n my vast amounts of spare time, (yeah right,) I am rather an avid reader. Depending on the mood I am in, will determine which genre of book I am drawn to. I am presently trapped in the 1930-1940s Hollywood glamour era, and to be honest, I quite like it there. It will probably come as no surprise that I am currently obsessed with the biography, Platinum Girl – The Life and Legends of Jean Harlow. She’s a character that has always fascinated me. Well let’s be honest, anyone who was single handedly responsible for launching the ‘Platinum Blonde,’ which saw the nations beauty parlors jam packed with women demanding to be transformed into blond bombshells, was always going to peak my interest. She’s the original platinum blonde. Before there was Jayne Mansfield, Kim Novak, Debbie Harry, or Gwen Stefani, there was Marilyn. But the very first celebrity to rock white blonde strands was Jean Harlow. Why did she decide to put her hair through such torture? Howard Hughes wanted to create a moniker

Modern Models CHANGING THE GAME From 90s Heroin-Chic to Today’s Freckled Self-Love Club BY ANNA GERLACH Over the decades, the modelling industry has changed as rapidly as the fashion industry itself. During the 20’s, models showcased designer clothes with healthy figures at a normal weight, this carried on until the 50’s and partially in the roaring 60s. However, once it got closer to the mid 90s, a trend unveiled itself within the modelling world that had serious consequences. The "heroin chic" wave started slowly but surely became more and more intense. The thinner, the better.

T

he term "perfection" was considered the most important characteristic of a model’s look. What that meant was an unhealthy size zero at a height of at least 1.75cm, flawless skin, full, shiny hair, and a face as symmetrical as possible. A trend which supermodels like Kate Moss and Gisele Bündchen represented, especially during the peak of their careers. What

72

followed lead girls and other models to having a sick image of the "perfect" body, creating a wave of anorexia, pressure, drug-misuse, the prescription of harmful weight loss pills and laxatives, as well as the lasting thought and fear of never looking good or being thin enough. However, at one point, the industry finally seemed to adjust to the change

that people wanted to see; more selflove, a healthier body image and faces that represented a lot more diversity, open-mindedness and individuality. And although we are still far away from a true sense of acceptance and genderconformity within the modelling business, there are a lot of pioneer models who have contributed with a strong push in the right direction!

Model: Jazzelle Zanaughtti

One inspirational newcomer has to be Jazzelle Zanaughtti. The alternative break-every-rule-there-is beauty icon reflects a flawed generation and has been a strong voice that encourages the world to embrace its insecurities, rather than hide them. With her androgynous look and cutting-edge style, she has gained a following of 400k on Instagram, besides becoming a muse for renowned photographer Nick Knight and walking for brands such as Gypsy Sport and Ashish.

Winnie Harlow One who is serious about embracing ones flaws is Canadian model Chantelle Brown, also known as Winnie Harlow. The ’America’s Next Top Model’ candidate suffers from the same skin condition that Michael Jackson had, called ’Vitiligo’. After years of rejection and bullying, the model never lost sight of her dream of becoming one of the world’s leading supermodels.

Shaun Ross Shaun Ross, besides working as a professional dancer and actor, has become the very first male AfricanAmerican albino top model. Growing up with comments like "Mommy, why is he so white?”, or “You’re ugly!”, the 23 yearold never lost sight of the really important things in life… self-acceptance. He has changed the perspective of a generation by going from being the "weird" kid to working for luxury brands such as Givenchy and Alexander

Winnie Harlow for Desigual

McQueen, besides making it on the cover of publications such as British GQ, Italian Vogue and i-D Magazine.

Casey Legler One or two decades ago people might not of accepted seeing a woman modelling for a male fashion brand. However, today’s world shows that anything is possible. Casey Legler is not even "just" an androgynous model, she is also a French-American writer, former Olympic swimmer and restaurateur. The 41-year old belongs to no class. She is an uncategorizable beauty with many talents and certainly a look that nobody can copy. However, in her teenage years, besides finding herself in a world where it seemed like she didn’t belong and concentrating on becoming a swimmer for the Olympic Games, she was dealing with abuse, and struggling with alcoholism. Today, although Casey has mainly retired from modeling, she still inspires others with her story of resilience.

TORQUE TALK

MOTORING AUTHOR, RACING DRIVER AND PHOTO-JOURNALIST IAN KUAH REPORTS ON THE

AMG GT4 COUPE

81

TORQUE TALK

It had to happen sooner or later as the success story of the SLS AMG and AMG GT propelled the performance wing of Mercedes to greater things. Two supercars and two bespoke V8 engines later the AMG GT4 Coupe storms in as a practical four-seat five-door Coupe with pure AMG DNA, near supercar performance, and no direct rivals.

B

ased on the E-Class platform and internally known as the X290, the AMG GT4 Coupe is the third bespoke car in the Mercedes-AMG lineage and the first to offer four doors and four seats. Constructed from steel, aluminium and carbon-fibre as a large Coupe fivedoor car sized somewhere between the E-Class and S-Class with the family friendly seat and load space versatility that this implies. Because AMG always offers choices the GT4 Coupe range offers four engines and a myriad of options. The 2,999cc straight-six engine that debuted in the face-lifted S-Class powers the entry-level models. Featuring EQ boost from a starter/ generator system, the GT 43 4Matic+ has 367hp from 5,500-6,100rpm and 500Nm of torque from 1,800-4,500rpm.

82

The EQ Boost feature adds 22hp and 250Nm under full throttle acceleration. The GT 53 4Matic+ develops 435hp at 6,100rpm, with 520Nm of torque from 1,800-5,800rpm. The EQ Boost adds the same extra output as on the GT 43 engine. This is the same engine fitted to the current S500 and both these sixes are coupled to the AMG Speedshift TCT 9-speed automatic gearbox with torque converter. The base V8 model is the GT 63 4Matic+, whose M177 bi-turbo V8 motor makes 585hp from 5,5006,500rpm along with 800Nm of torque between 2,350 and 5,000rpm. The S version we tested has the full-fat 639hp, underpinned by a whopping 900Nm of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels by the AMG Speedshift MCT 9G wet clutch automatic gearbox.

With its shark-like nose and Panamericana grille the GT 63 S 4Matic+ looks angry, and its ‘move over or I’ll eat you up’ visage is matched by suitably bombastic performance and a growling V8 soundtrack. Considering it weighs as much as an S-Class the 3.2 sec 100km/h sprint and 315km/h top speed are pretty impressive. In fact, despite weighing over 500kg more than the GT R, the GT4’s all-wheel-drive system has the traction to beat its two-seat brother to this benchmark speed by 0.4 sec. To help tame the excesses of their powerful engines AMG has thoughtfully installed a limited slip differential in every model. The six cylinder cars and the base V8 model come with a mechanical limited slip differential, while the S model has an electronic LSD and active engine mounts that

TORQUE TALK

firm up in driving modes from Sport upwards. This electronic LSD is optional on the other models. Active rear axle steering is standard on the V8 models and part of the optional AMG Dynamic Plus package on the sixcylinder cars. The cabin architecture is unique to the GT4 Coupe and combines elements of AMG and mainstream Mercedes to create a unique blend of luxury and performance. The big double 12.3inch high-resolution screen dashboard display behind a single sheet of glass is straight from the E and S-Class models. This is standard on the V8 models and an option on the others. The centre console and steering wheel controls take their styling cues from the AMG GT while adding some new features like the coloured display buttons. Ferrari may have started the whole F1 style steering wheel control button fashion, but AMG takes the guesswork out of things with two steering wheel control knobs that feature the same pictograms that appear on the centre console. Using these is easier, faster and less distracting on the move than searching for buttons on the centre console. The system is standard on the 63 S and an option on other models.

In fact the 63 S has a whole raft of standard equipment including the fine Burmester audio system. The Burmester High-End 3D system with 23 speakers and 1,450 Watts is an option. AMG told us that the basic configuration features a non-folding two-seat rear bench with a storage compartment in the middle and a carbon-fibre panel behind the seat back for maximum bodyshell stiffness. Here the boot space is 456 litres. The alternative is the 40-20-40 folding rear seat option that maximises the versatility of the hatchback design. Without the carbon rear wall, boot space is 461 litres, the cargo bay expanding to 1,324 litres with the seat backs folded flat. This approximates the load capacity of a medium size estate car. The third possible configuration is called the High Class Rear and brings two individual rear seats with a Business centre console equipped with controls for the infotainment and comfort functions of the vehicle. The standard sports seats are a good blend of comfort while their side

bolsters hold you in position well in the bends. The test cars were fitted with the optional Performance seats that are better on track but require you to climb in over their taller side bolsters, which some might find less practical for a daily driver. And a daily driver the GT4 Coupe most certainly is. The suspension is by four links in front and five links at the rear, with steel springs and adaptive dampers. Three-chamber air suspension with adaptive damping is standard on the V8-powered 63 S 4Matic+ model that we drove. In comfort mode the ride is very compliant despite the optional 9.0J and 11.0J x 21-inch wheels and 275/35ZR21 and 315/30ZR21 tyres. Standard footwear on the six-cylinder cars and the base V8 is 9.5J and 11.0J x 19-inch with 255/45ZR19 and 285/40ZR19 rubber. The 63 S comes with 9.5J and 11.0J x 20-inch wheels shod with 265/40ZR20 and 295/35ZR20 tyres. To confirm its credentials as a family performance car I sat in the rear for a while. This confirmed that the AMG engineers have done a fine

job with the secondary ride. You can feel the suspension ‘breathing’ over bumps around town and on country roads, with none of the short, sharp movements and wheel patter you often experience in the back of many high performance cars. Back in the drivers’ seat Comfort mode helps you to relax even though the 639hp V8 monster under the hood is raring to go. Sport mode sharpens everything up and is the default choice when the tarmac ahead starts to take on interesting angles. On the road the speed, balance and grip of the GT4 Coupe is never

86

called into question, nor is its ability to play limousine in Comfort mode one moment and autobahn stormer in Sport mode the next. This is a car with a truly wide spread of talent.

2,045 kg machine. And it is precisely because of this that on track the laws of physics ultimately temper the GT4 Coupe’s impressive turn of speed.

And it sounds good too. Despite the EU authorities attempts to make cars quieter AMG has succeeded in retaining a lot of their NASCAR grade V8 soundtrack. In Sport mode, or with the exhaust valve button depressed this is a good tunnel car.

On the fast and fluid Circuit of The Americas near Austin, Texas the GT4 Coupe acquitted itself well, but with a couple of provisos. When you compare it to a pure sports car like the AMG GT R the Coupe’s mass and 55/45 percent front/rear weight distribution stand out as immediate limitations.

As competent as the GT4 Coupe is for a car that tips the scales at 2,045kg, you are always aware that it is a

This means that while front-end grip into slow bends can be optimised on turn-in by trail braking, you have to be

TORQUE TALK

mindful of your entry speed into the medium speed sequential right and left bends that make up Turn 6 to Turn 9 here. In an ideal world this sequence requires the driver to enter the first bend on the right line with the right velocity, and then maintain a fairly constant speed in a perfect rightleft-right-left rhythm. However, the turn radius of each bend is not quite the same, and going off line a bit, or picking up speed so that you enter the third bend a tad too fast results in rhythm breaking understeer and a significantly slower exit speed from Turn 10 onto the subsequent straight. This was the part of the track where the AMG GT R, driven by DTM ace Bernd Schneider effortlessly drove away from its larger brother. Whatever AMG might say about the competence of the GT4 Coupe on track, the lower centre of gravity, front-mid-engine transaxle configuration and 48/52 percent weight distribution of the 500kg lighter GT R threw the empirical real world differences between their pure-bred, two-seat sports car and super sports saloon into stark relief.

With the car set up in Race mode, I found it easy to use the 900Nm of torque to break traction at the rear exiting slower turns in second or third gear and indulge in powerslides. The electronic LSD comes into its own here, as does the 4WD system, which nicely shunts power to the rear on demand, the linear characteristic velocity of the chassis shining through once the rear end was unhinged. In long, sweeping bends the GT4 Coupe was impressive for a car of its size, weight and power, and I particularly enjoyed the long and fast three corner long right-hand T16, T17 and T18 combination, which you take with one sweep of the steering wheel, missing the first two apexes and nailing the third. Thanks to the balance of the 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive and the downforce from the rear spoiler there was no problem keeping station with the GT R right into the braking threshold. Even approaching the tight left hander at the end of the main straight the huge carbon ceramic brakes do their job very well indeed, washing off big

speeds lap after lap whilst trying to keep up with Schneider. Coming back to that understeer issue, it came out during a conversation with an engineer on the brake and tyre wear at this launch event that the ceramic brakes were holding up well, but that two sets of front tyres needed replacing for every set of rears. However, the GT4 Coupe was being tracked on Michelin Pilot Sport 4S street tyres, and the handling and tyre wear pattern reflected this. The engineer also told us that AMG has had a bespoke Michelin Cup 2 tyre developed specifically for the GT4 Coupe since such tyres are not normally available for cars of this weight class. We were very impressed with the depth and breadth of engineering displayed by the AMG GT4 63 S 4Matic+ Coupe. From comfortable daily driver for four to occasional trackday weapon it seems to have all its bases covered, and at this point in time has no direct rivals.

Let's Be Honest About...

FOOD by Anna Gerlach

DO YOU... often find yourself wondering where the food you are eating in restaurants or buying in large grocery stores actually comes from. Sometimes you might be trying to avoid this question on purpose, for example when eating at McDonald’s or trying new dishes where the basic ingredients seem so exotic that you would never guess what they are. However, not asking about the origin of our foods has led to serious consequences for us consumers; and the planet.

122

W

e eat meats that are processed, drink milk from cows who have been fed with antibiotics, besides making our fruit salads with apples and kiwis that have been modified with chemicals and then shipped to our closest supermarket from a land that is thousands of kilometres away… What that means for us and our environment isn’t hard to guess: pollution, destruction and an increase in illnesses. But people have been clever enough to find pretty simple ways to slowly change this large mess of false information by going back to the old ways, where chemicals, medication and unhealthy foods in general, were not even invented yet. "Honest" is how consumers want their food to be described; and nothing else. Let’s be honest and stop the misinformation we’ve been given by the food industry. What that means is that we want to know exactly where our food comes from and how it was produced.

What does "HONEST FOOD" mean?

"IN SHORT: IT’S ALL NATURAL. AND HOW SIMPLE IS THAT?"

However, if we cannot even trust the packages anymore, who can we trust? This is where honest food comes in. Restaurants, such as "Breathe," which you can read more about on pages 124-129, is one of those few venues that offers honest food.

COSTA CUISINE Bettina, our resident healthy travel foodie, will give us tips on hidden gems in places across the globe. Food has become such a big part of travel that people will spend hours scouring the best places to stay and eat. Here are some insider tips.

HOW DOES

d o o F

AFFECT YOUR

Mood 1.How does the way a person approaches FOOD affect not only their body but their MIND?

Food affects our body and mind in so many different ways. If we approach food in a positive way from the get go it can really help. With so much information and access out there, food choices can be very stressful. So by simplifying we also remove some of that stress. Eating more plants and going back to basics and starting with what is available seasonally and locally helps. Letting ourselves be a part of the food process by visiting farmers markets at the weekends will enable you to feel better about food in general.

124

2.How do cooking and MENTAL HEALTH intersect?

Cooking in itself is an act of self-love. Time is one of our most precious commodities. So to give yourself the time to source, cook and nourish yourself is a gift in itself. Even if it is just a few times a week or even on a weekend basis. The love that you put into your meal will transpire to yourself and to anyone that you are preparing that meal for. Good vibes don't lie.

3.How did you learn to cook and eat for your PERSONAL HEALTH and WELLNESS? Cooking is something I have been interested in and doing since I was a little girl. I was always surrounded by enthusiastic amazing family cooks. I cofounded my first wellness retreat seven

years ago and decided to cook on them as well as run them. At the time I decided to specialise in plant based and gluten free cuisine that naturally trickled into my personal life. I suffered some personal health issues and eating more plant based made me feel better so I stuck with it professionally and personally.

4.Do you recommend that people follow a VEGAN DIET? Why or why not? I think that is entirely up to each person. It also depends on what produce and food they have access to. Certain places are more abundant than others. I think the best thing you can do is to be more inclusive of plants into your everyday life and see how you feel. Rather than thinking "this is what I can’t have". Think, "wow this is what I can include into my diet".

COSTA CUISINE

5.Can you name 8 foods that help with ANXIETY? For each food, please explain a bit about why it can help with anxiety. PUMPKIN SEEDS Pumpkin seeds are an excellent source of potassium, which helps regulate electrolyte balance and manage blood pressure. Pumpkin seeds are also a good source of the mineral zinc. One study carried out on 100 female high school students found that zinc deficiency can negatively affect your mood. Zinc is essential for brain and nerve development. The largest storage sites of zinc in the body are in the brain regions involved with emotions. Great ways to incorporate pumpkin seeds is by sprinkling them on soups, salads and porridge or making them into a delicious pesto.

BANANAS Eating potassium-rich foods such, as bananas, may help reduce symptoms of stress and anxiety. Bananas are easy to eat as they are. A great travel food and also easily incorporated into breakfast dishes such as pancakes and cereal topping.

TURMERIC Turmeric is a spice commonly used in Indian and South-East Asian cooking. The active ingredient in turmeric is called curcumin. Curcumin may help lower anxiety by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress that is often increased in people experiencing mood disorders, such as anxiety and depression. It is very nice to add into stews or added into a hot drink.

DARK CHOCOLATE Studies have generally found that dark chocolate or cocoa can improve moods. However, many of these studies are observational, so the results need to be interpreted with caution. Delicious to eat on its own, great for baking and lovely melted on top of baked goods.

ALMONDS Almonds provide a significant amount of vitamin E, which has been studied for its role in anxiety prevention. Almonds can easily be made into plant milks, ground into flour for baking or chopped up and used as sprinkles.

CINNAMON Cinnamon provides anti-inflammatory properties. Researchers have identified many different types of flavonoids in cinnamon, all of which are highly effective at fighting dangerous inflammation levels throughout the body.

I love using cinnamon in baking or dusted on top of porridge.

CHAMOMILE Several studies have examined the association between chamomile and anxiety relief. Best drunk in tea format. If you can find good quality dried chamomile flowers then that would be the best.

GREEN TEA Green tea contains L-theanine, an amino acid that has been studied for the positive effects it may have on brain health and anxiety reduction. My favourite way to enjoy Green Tea would be matcha which is the first buds of tea leaves that get ground into a fine powder or stepped tea leaves are great too.

MÁLAGA meets GRANADA

ead up winding, climbing and spectacular roads in Andalusia, through white hilltop villages to vineyards that are among the highest in Europe, and you find magical wines. Granada wines from the Alpujarras mountains on one side, and the Axerquìa region wines from Málaga on the other, are a lovely surprise. Many don’t carry a DO label that might identify them as top quality; you’re more likely to see Vino de la tierra, which these winemakers use when they opt out of the DO system to make unusual and very much terroir wines. Rich in aromas of Mediterranean herbs and forests, crystal clean whites from surprising northern grapes such as Riesling and classy red Pinot Noirs that carry the scent of these mountains: these are unusual and pleasing wines. Some are made from grapes nearly forgotten, such as Romé, a rare grape native to Málaga. The wines are not always easy to find in shops, and you can’t visit some of the wineries, which are small family operations that sell mainly online. A few are part of the extreme edge of “natural” wines (nothing, but nothing, added), which are at the extreme (and exciting) edge of European winemaking

in Malaga’s Axerquìa, Sedella, a 12-year-old winery that makes only three wines, including a red from Romé and Grenache grapes, from recovered vines that are over 100 years old and worked with draft horses. The soil is a nearly impossibly poor loose slate. The view is spectacular. More typical is the Bodegas Almijara in Cómpeta, which has guided tours and tastings. The town is famous for its 15 August Night of Wine. In Granada’s Alpujarra, Bodega Barranco Oscuro, near Carretera, whose founder Manuel Valenzuela is well-known even abroad as a pioneer of natural wines. Sweet dessert wines: Look for the best But what of those classic old sweet Málaga wines? They are made mainly from two white grape varieties, Pedro Ximénez and Moscatel, grown in three areas, Axarquía, Montes de Málaga and Zona Norte. They were naturally sweetened before a tradition evolved of fortified versions, and some can be cloying. But even with these dulce wine grapes, there are changes and it’s worth trying the newer dry Moscatel wines. A great cellar for trying the dry version as well as four superb gradations of sweet (and price) is Jorge Ordónez in Vélez. The province has had a special place in the wine world for centuries, but it lost its sheen when it was hit by phylloxera in 1876, the disease that virtually wiped out most of Europe’s vineyards. The little aphid that eats the roots of the vine, thus killing it, probably arrived by ship, for Málaga was a key port by the 1850s. Arab rulers earlier gave the region the technique for drying grapes on the ground. “Perhaps it was to disguise the alcoholic nature of the wine that the Arabs gave it the name xarab al malaqui, or Málaga syrup”, notes the Malaga wine museum, which offers an excellent, multilingual history of wine in the region. In 1502 the Catholic monarchs

The Wine Brotherhood is more than half a millennia old

who controlled the city of Málaga issued a royal decree that only Málaga wine could be drunk here. During the 18th and 19th centuries it became the peninsula’s main export city; taxes on wine paid for the cathedral’s construction as well as the port in Málaga but the solution to phylloxera (grafting vines onto American rootstock) came too late to save the region’s wine business. To make sense of Málaga wine today it helps to have an Andalusian wine geography lesson, then head out to the wine trails. The province has five official wine regions: Serranía de Ronda and Manilva in the west of the province, Norte in the north, Montes de Málaga around the city of Málaga and Axarquía to the east. Ronda and Axaquía both have high mountain wines, with grapes grown at 500 to nearly 1,300 metres. There are three quality wine DOs (Denominaciones de Origen): DO Málaga (generally sweet white wines), DO Sierra de Malaga (white, rosé and red wines, and DO Pasas de Málaga (raisins).

The wine museum has a wonderful collection of old Malaga wine labels, covering centuries

The View Marbella and Los Naranjos Golf Club enjoyed a golf tournament and a vibrant 20’s themed party to welcome back this group that remains devoted to this precious destination. Ever since the 70’s Scandinavian tourism began in this peninsula with the beginning of charter flights and group tourism, the Costa del Sol has been a favourite destination not only to visit but to live. Today, Swedish and Belgians have become the main clientele for real estate along the Costa del Sol.

26/09/2018

12:32

Each year at this time, a huge number of Swedish residents land on the Costa del Sol, a figure that increases each year, forming a community which is becoming one of the most important economies of the region. After spending the hottest summer months in their own countries, enjoying amongst other things, golf, they return to the Costa del Sol in order to continue practising this sport during the European winter season. Currently taking second place in nationality rankings, led by the Belgians. “In the last two years, these two nationalities have represented the majority of our clientele” emphasised Simon Boxus, head of sales of The View Marbella. Residential tourism, is a trend in which the Nordic clientele has gained prominence. In fact those in charge of The View Marbella have noted the high level of information being requested from those of Swedish descent. LA CONCHA WALK RAISING AWARENESS FOR CHILDREN WITH CANCER We are all aware of the severity of cancer and most of us either know or know of someone who has suffered with the disease or even lost their life to it. It is devastating to watch someone deteriorate and fight against, even more so when it happens to be a child’s life that is in the balance. Having had two people close to me lose their battle against the illness I have had my own experiences with cancer, however, coming close to seeing children fighting to survive and watching their struggle to recover is heart-breaking. There are plenty of charities out there that send money to such patients but I always feel that charity begins at home. For this reason plus being a mother and imagining what the parents of these children must be going through, I felt inspired and set out to raise awareness and funds to help ease the suffering of some local children recovering from chemotherapy and radiation treatments against cancer. I aimed to raise funds by organising a hike up the La Concha mountain in the Sierra Blanca near Marbella. The walk began at the Refugio de Juanar

near the town of Monda on Friday 28th September. We set off on the 1215m climb which begins through pine forest and works its way up to some steeper and occasionally relatively hairy moments. We spoke about the cause on the path which was quite emotional but made it all the more meaningful to be taking action. The people who came along on the hike were all generous, inspiring and kind, loving people who I am so grateful to for their support.

The next event will be raising funds for children with autism and epilepsy, two very difficult life changing disorders that I have come into close contact with (and researched heavily) due to my involvement and development of CBD and CBG products, which can potentially help to relieve symptoms for both. Watch this space for more details on how to get involved! For more information contact/visit: info@theleafelite.com www.theleafelite.com

HIGHLY ADDICTIVE PHENOMENONS SUCH AS CANDY CRUSH IMPLEMENT A NEUROLOGICALLYCANNY DESIGN WHEREBY MINI-REWARDS (...) UNFORTUNATELY, REAL LIFE DOESN'T OFFER THE SAME KIND OF BUY OUTS I'm not alone in my inability (unwillingness) to remain “present”. Millennials are the real victims of the age of instant gratification. Where many of us once carried just keys and cash or a grey brick with buttons and a maximum inbox capacity of 10 text messages, in their pockets (for mere fleeting moments) is a device which gives them instant social feedback, connectivity, cultural cache, comfort, kudos.... If it's not their Facebook friends telling them they're great, it's the games they play when they should be working to pay off those heinous student loans. Highly addictive phenomenons such as Candy Crush implement a neurologically-canny design whereby mini-rewards, bright colours and in-game compliments consistently tell your brain you're winning while the people on the tube watching you dribble on your shoes think you might not be. Lose five times in a row and the “free” game puts you in a temporary time-out..... unless you want to purchase some extra lives - Candy Crush is now worth $6 billion!

A 2007 STUDY CONDUCTED AT UC DAVIS IDENTIFIED THREE MAIN TYPES OF PATIENCE, AND ACCORDINGLY LINKED “PATIENT” PEOPLE TO IMPROVED MENTAL HEALTH; REDUCED NEGATIVITY AND DEPRESSION AND INCREASED GRATITUDE AND MINDFULNESS.

Unfortunately, real life doesn't offer the same kind of buy outs (unless you're really rich of course) and millennials not being told they're great quite often enough or advancing to the next level in their personal lives and careers as fast as they do when aligning digital sweeties are hitting roadblocks of anxiety, disillusionment and depression in record numbers.

slow trains, slow broadband...) with calmness and composure.

So what's the remedy to the ills of instant gratification? ...Wait a minute and I'll tell you... just a sec... nearly there...... patience. A “virtue” extolled by a hundred old wives tales has in recent years been scientifically proven to offer a range of life benefits. A 2007 study conducted at UC Davis identified three main types of patience, and accordingly linked “patient” people to improved mental health; reduced negativity and depression and increased gratitude and mindfulness.

The third patience is interpersonal, exhibited when treating others with compassion and tolerance (you won't be seeing much of that in the news, but it does occur). This type of patience is most often present in acts of kindness, empathy and cooperation and allows us to accept or even embrace another's quirks or differences. The result – improved relationships, higher levels of gratitude, hopefulness and reduced loneliness. So if the sound of hubby slurping his tea while you read this is making your eyelids twitch, pause, remember he always books the cinema tickets and move on mindfully.

The first type of patience involves facing life's daily hassles (slow lifts,

The second is reserved for major challenges, allowing us to confront illness and loss or trying to buy Odeon cinema tickets on the fucking automated fucking ticket fucking hotline without losing hope or feeling overly miserable.

Patient people also appear to enjoy better health, sleeping better and experiencing less physical complaints. Anxiety and stress cause the brain to release coping hormones which over prolonged periods cause damage to the body, so adjusting the way you deal with life's challenges could also see you having less to deal with. Patience, like almost anything can be learned through practise. Slowing down, being mindful, consciously delaying gratification from time to time, be it new shoes or that next cocktail. Stopping to think before we speak or act, especially in moments of stress. Taking the time to look around us and be thankful for what's already there as opposed to what we might want. Essentially, not fixating on the negatives at the expense of all the positives. Really, this should be easy – you're sat in Spain you lucky bugger.... www.greenlandphotography.com

THE GUNS FELL

SILENT by Padre Peter On the 2nd August 1914 Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany demanded from his nephew King Albert of the Belgians a passage through neutral Belgium to enable German armies to invade France. On the 3rd August the Belgian king replied “Belgium is a nation, not a road!

he Belgian army, equipped with 102 machine guns and little or no artillery, with the king at its head, its queen working as a nurse, and the 14 year old heir to the throne as a simple private, prepared to resist. The city of Liège held out for eleven days, allowing the British and the French precious time to mobilise. King Albert, a trained soldier, fell back on the Yser; which region the Belgian army occupied for the remainder of the war. By the end of 1914 only 60,000 Belgian soldiers remained under arms, whilst some six thousand Belgian civilians had been summarily executed by the Germans for resistance activities. With the fall of Antwerp in October, thousands fled abroad, with nearly a quarter of a million landing at ports like Folkestone and Tilbury to seek refuge in Great Britain. Women like Lady Lugard rallied round. “It has been happily given to England”, she wrote, “…to take her part in offering to the stricken Belgian population such help as hospitality and sympathy can give. It has been at once our comfort and our privilege.” A small bewildered Flemish girl, clutching her grandmother’s skirt, arrived at Victoria Station. Virtually without possessions, all that the grandmother had in her apron pocket were some silver coffee spoons. “Poor things,” she heard people say. “Will I ever understand this language?” she thought. Tea was offered. “What terrible coffee,” she thought. The group was moved to Alexandra Palace. Toys were distributed amongst the children, but when it came to the little girl’s turn, none were left. “Never mind”, said the kind English lady, “you will have tea with the princess.” And so the little girl had her first taste of Victoria Sponge, served her by a sympathetic Princess Beatrice, daughter of Queen Victoria. “How delicious!”, she thought. A charabanc arrived to convey the small party to Chorley Wood, where the villagers welcomed them, and they remained for the duration. I have the coffee spoons still, for, you see, that little girl was my mother.

The American commander, General John Pershing (perhaps wishing to make up for lost time as the Americans had entered the war at a rather late stage) believed that the Germans needed “to be taught a lesson”. Knowing that the Armistice had been signed, he nevertheless ordered his men to fight on until the final hour. The US Marines took over 1100 casualties crossing the Meuse. Had they waited a few hours they could have done so with no casualties. The 89th US Division attacked and took the town of Stenay on the morning of the 11th at a cost of 300 lives. Had they waited only a couple of hours they could have marched in unopposed.

At home, Germany viewed the terms of the Armistice and the subsequent Treaty of Versailles as too harsh, whilst the French saw it as too lenient. It was only in 2010 that Germany paid off its war debt, with a final payment of $95 million, but in the meantime, of course, war had once again reared its ugly head.
