Nine down… three to go. As the finishing post to a challenging 2020 comes into sight and we set out to navigate the winter season with determination tinged with trepidation, we can all turn half a hopeful eye to the future. For us, that will mean continuing to produce this magazine in print each month and doing everything we possibly can to promote the coast’s finest businesses. This month will also see us launch our first magazine in the UK, Avery Life, 120 pages packed full of informative features on all things senior. Targeted at the over 50s, this brings our stable of titles to four; Society Marbella, Utopia, Avery Life and Confeti. We now comprehensively cover lifestyle, weddings, real estate and senior living. Talking of weddings, this industry has been decimated during the pandemic, but all signs are positive for an incredibly busy 2021. If you know of anyone planning a new year nuptial who would like their wedding featured in our first Confeti of the season, please get in touch.

RYAN REYNOLDS

T

he youngest of four boys, Ryan Rodney Reynolds was born on October 23rd, 1976 in Vancouver, Canada. Talking about his childhood, he explained in an interview with GQ magazine that he ‘was a really nervous kid’, and that ‘I was extremely sensitive… I was so aware of everything around me.’ He went onto share that he found his place within the school theatre, where his vulnerability could become an asset rather than an issue.

At only 12 years old, Ryan landed his first professional acting job, in the Canadian teen drama, Hillside, later renamed Fifteen, when it was released in the USA on Nickelodeon. The show ran for two years from 1991 to 1993. After the show finished Ryan struggled to find other acting work, so moved to Los Angeles in the late 1990s. Nothing happened overnight, but in 1998 Ryan was cast as a medical student in Two Guys and a Girl. This then helped him transition into feature films, starring in the comedy National Lampoon’s Van Wilder as a long-standing, fun-loving college student. Over the following years Ryan appeared in a string of movies alongside Jessica Biel and Wesley Snipes to name a few. While none received the greatest reviews, Reynolds enjoyed popularity in other ways; he was featured in People

magazine’s ‘Sexiest People’ in 2007 and earnt the title of ‘Sexiest Renaissance Man’. He also enjoyed a very high-profile engagement and ultimately break-up with Canadian singer, Alanis Morissette. The duo met in 2002 and were engaged by 2004, but despite their passionate relationship, the couple announced their separation in 2007. That same year Ryan began a relationship with actress, Scarlett Johansson, they were engaged the following year and married on September 27th, 2008.

The following year, he starred opposite legend, Denzel Washington in Safe House and walked down the aisle at Boone Hall Planation in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. With another marriage under his belt and his career in full swing, Reynolds lent his voice to animated movies The Croods and Turbo and appeared in some indie roles in The Voices, The Captive and Mississippi Grind. Woman in Gold and thriller Self/ Less followed.

2009 was the year everything changed. Reynolds played the mercenary, Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, alongside Hugh Jackman before teaming up with Sandra Bullock in The Proposal and starring in independent drama, Buried. In December 2010 Ryan and Scarlett announce their decision to separate after two years of marriage.

In October 2014, Lively announced she was pregnant and in January 2015 she gave birth to their first child, a daughter, James. Blake had expressed her desire to have a large family and not wasting any time, just a year and a half later, she gave birth to their second daughter, Inez. The couple are notoriously private when it comes to their family life keeping their daughters’ names, and Inez’ gender, under wraps for quite some time.

In 2011 The Green Lantern was released, Ryan played Hal Jordan alongside his future wife, Blake Lively before showing off his comedic skills in The Change-Up. The same year sources revealed Lively and Reynolds were dating after Blake was spotted leaving his apartment on his birthday weekend.

After 16 years in developed, Deadpool was released in 2016 and became the highest-grossing R-rated feature of all time, leading to a Golden Globe nomination for Ryan. Deadpool 2 enjoyed similar success in 2018 grossing nearly 800 million dollars at the global box office. Ryan once again lent his voice to Pikachu in Pokémon Detective Pikachu before starring in Netflix’s Underground 6 as the leader of a group of operatives who set out to take down the world’s most dangerous villains. In summer 2019 Ryan and Blake welcomed their third daughter. They are yet to officially announce her name, however fans are led to believe it is Betty due to references to the couple’s older two children in their friend, Taylor Swift’s most recent album.

Acting has given me a way to channel my angst. I feel like an overweight, pimply faced kid a lot of the time – and finding a way to access that insecurity, and put it toward something creative is incredibly rewarding. I feel very lucky.

Despite the recent Disney-Fox merger, fans can rest Ryan is ready to return for Deadpool 3 and with any luck will be back in his red-and-black suit in no time. It is thought that the third edition will still be R-Rated, making it a first for Marvel Studios. And while over the coming years we can expect to see new faces take on the roles of many characters we know and love, thanks to the aforementioned merger, it is safe to say Ryan is Deadpool and when it returns, he will be back.

Our cover star, Ryan Reynolds, has hit the jackpot, selling his gin company, Aviation American gin for an estimated $610 million. Spirits giant, Diageo, who previously bought George Clooney´s Casamigos Tequila company for $700 million, with another $300 million based on its performance in a 2017 deal, are the name behind the purchase. Diageo, the alcohol giant which owns spirits like Johnnie Walker and Smirnoff, announced its agreement to take the “Deadpool” actor’s American-style gin under its wing last month. Reynolds will retain an ongoing ownership interest in the gin. The deal is worth up to $610 million, and includes an initial payment of $335 million and further potential consideration of up to $275 million based on sales of Aviation American Gin over a 10-year period, Diageo said. Diageo’s spirits portfolio also includes gins like Tanqueray and Gordon’s. Someone give the guy a glass of gin to celebrate!

...blogger, fashion & lifestyle influencer

@sirapevida What’s your full name? Sira Pevida Where are you from? I was born and raised in Mexico, now currently based in Miami. What is your background and how did you become an influencer? I previously studied and worked professionally as a nutritionist, before transitioning into a full-time digital influencer. I started sharing my styling tips and outfit posts on Instagram, and in time the posts started gaining traction and a following, which enabled me to continue my hobby and transform it into a career. What 3 things does anyone starting in your industry need to know? Know your audience, and what they interact with most. Be creative and unique, have your own distinctive aesthetic and personality, it will separate you apart from others. Also be ready to work hard, stay determined and dedicate a lot of time to grow and achieve your goals. Become knowledgeable on editing techniques, as it can help elevate any image or video. Especially now with the rise of platforms such as Tik Tok and the introduction of Reels on Instagram, editing can take a simple video from a standard outfit post to a viral video. It is always satisfying to see the end product after editing! Who inspires you? My 3 children always inspire me every day. They are my support system. Describe your content in three words? Interactive, editorial and avant-garde. What does a typical day in your week look like? My day itinerary changes all the time, which is something I love about my job as I’m always adapting and trying new things, without a regimented schedule! However, activities that always remain constant are of course spending time with my 3 little ones, and fitting in a workout at home. A lot of meetings, appointments and content scheduling and shooting also.

28

Your favourite fashion brand? My favourites are Saint Laurent, Dior and Chanel for their unique and distinctive styles and silhouettes, as well as Bottega Veneta accessories. Your top Instagram tip? Keep your content consistent, aesthetically distinctive and produce content you love, and that you know your audience also loves and will interact with. Creating content you are truly happy with will allow your true personality to come through the content! Favourite filter? I always use my own I created - called ‘Sun Kissed’. It adds a lovely warm golden glow effect to any image. How long does a standard photo on your grid really take to shoot? It depends on the content, some style photos can be within an hour, however some styling videos or reels that I post on both Instagram and Tik Tok can sometimes take 6 hours to shoot, with all of the clothing changes, positioning and postediting transitions. Most exciting moment since becoming an influencer. I have loved being able to attend the shows of brands who I have loved and followed for a very long time, also being able to meet some incredible people from all around the globe which I may not have met outside of the industry. Favourite travel destination? I love Mykonos. The white buildings, Greek food and of course the beautiful beaches make it the perfect destination for me to enjoy a nice warm weather trip. There is also always activities to do, and sights to see in Mykonos. I also love to visit Paris during the fall, as the parks are simply spectacular to look at, and the weather is still quite nice then to take a stroll and visit my usual haunts. The best gift you have ever received since becoming an influencer... I have been incredibly fortunate to receive

some amazing gifts by brands who I love and have always followed, however the gifts that stand out the most are simply attending events or trips with people and brands whom I love and gaining new experiences. avourite quote you live by... “The purpose of our lives is to be happy.” — Dalai Lama. Thoughts on Marbella… I had a trip planned earlier this year to visit Marbella, however due to Covid the trip was cancelled. However, I love Spain so much, and can’t wait to visit again when it is safe to do so! And see all the wonderful sights and restaurants Marbella has to offer.

Although we may feel like time travelling to Christmas, this year we need Halloween more than ever says Lydia Spencer-Elliott

September 22 was the last official day of summer, which means we are now free falling into Autumn. Aside from the browning of leaves, the tenth month of the year means fake blood and fangs: Halloween is here and more appropriate than ever.

This year has been an inferno disaster; a horror film with a mystery ending. Between a deadly virus, forest fires and numerous recessions, there is much to be afraid of and ample opportunity for costume ideas that encapsulate the uniquely apocalyptic flavour of 2020.

HUMOUR IN THE FACE OF UNPRECEDENTED TIMES IS, AT THIS POINT, REALLY OUR ONLY OPTION.

Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging defined an epoch in the noughties where denim miniskirts, skinny eyebrows and the word ‘minger’ reigned supreme. But nothing scalded the minds of impressionable viewers like the opening scene’s fancy dress party.

A vomit green orb in a red beanie, protagonist Georgia barrels into the room: “And what are you supposed to be, an obese leprechaun?” swipes her nemesis Lindsay. “Anyone can see I’m a stuffed olive,” answers Georgia before swivelling her attention to the friends who have betrayed her.

“What happened to you Ellen? You were supposed to come as a cocktail sausage. We said we’d all go as hors d’oeuvres… It was supposed to be a laugh,” Georgia laments. And then came the bitch bomb that pummelled through the earth’s crust and cemented itself in the core of our collective consciousness: “But boys don’t like girls for funniness,” they retort. Said from the mouth of an angel, a fairy princess and a coma-inducingly unimaginative devil, Georgia’s friends subscribed to the Mean Girls school of thought: “In the real world, Halloween is when kids dress up in costumes and beg for candy. In Girl World, Halloween is the one day a year when a girl can dress up like a total slut and no other girls can say anything else about it.” As standard, the uniform consists of fish nets, hot pants, devil horns, lipstick and enough fake blood and fake tan to sink a ship. The goal is to be the colour of mahogany despite masquerading as a blood drained corpse: attractive yet intensely artificial. I’ve done my fair share of hot pants and animal ears. It is an absolute truth that looking good is a form of protective armour, while an attempt at humour leaves you vulnerable to ridicule if the joke falls flat. But this year I’d much rather be merrily dressed as an olive, regardless of the reception. Humour in the face of unprecedented times is, at this point, really our only option. Like so many cultural references that now appear grey in the colour spectrum of political correctness, the iconic Mean Girls quote has been reclaimed by Gen Z and injected with humour for TikTok.

IN THE CHAOS OF LIFE, WE HAVE ACTUALLY STARTED BELIEVING IN MAGIC. On the video sharing app with over 800 million users, the soundbite plays as a myriad of less than sultry costumes grace the screen: Willy Wonka and a gang of twerking Oompa Loompas, the creature from Shape of Water, Squidward from SpongeBob, Gollum, Dr Evil, even the ‘thumb thumbs’ from Spy Kids. If it involves a bald cap, it’s there in all its glory—totally absent of vanity. TikTok, an app so popular that Donald Trump despises it, allows us to hold the selfie camera up to society and peer at our collective reflection: spookiness has been a constant theme well outside the month of October. In the chaos of life, we have actually started believing in magic. ‘Manifesting’ is where you set a goal, visualise achieving it, or write it down in a journal until it happens. Hashtag ‘manifestation’ has an unbelievable 4.3 billion views on TikTok…mostly from teens trying to get a text from their ex. Modern witches are thriving on the platform. Celebrities, including Stevie Nicks, Lana del Rey, Zoe Kravitz and even Beyonce, have been declared A-list adopters of magic. Whether astrology, crystals, horoscopes, hexing or healing, the occult ‘witch’ hashtag has over 505 million views. Witches used to mean weirdos or women with too much independence and power. Now, we’re not burning them at the steak, but adopting their magical techniques to establish some certainty amongst the turmoil and trepidation of 2020. Although this year may feel like a nightmare to be shaken awake from, I’d like to linger a while in Halloween traditions; the escapism and humour of the costumes, the supposed power of manifestation that makes us feel like we’ve regained some semblance of control, whether it actually works or not. If I have to wish my way out of a global pandemic, then watch me scribble ‘everyone is cured’ in my notebook 50 times a day. If Beyonce is doing it then so am I.

After all, her family is healthy and that’s all that matters. But soon Delfy is telling Billy what to do, and the boy is acting up and lashing out in ways he never has before. As Delfy’s influence is growing stranger and more sinister by the day, and rising tensions threaten to tear Rachel’s family apart, she clings to one purpose: to protect her children at any cost—even from themselves.

MAGIC LESSONS by Alice Hoffman

In an unforgettable novel that traces a centuries-old curse to its source, beloved author Alice Hoffman unveils the story of Maria Owens, accused of witchcraft in Salem, and matriarch of a line of the amazing Owens women and men. But where does the story of the Owens bloodline begin? In the 1600s, when Maria was abandoned in a snowy field in rural England as a baby. Under the care of Hannah Owens, Maria learns about the “Unnamed Arts.” Hannah recognizes that Maria has a gift and she teaches the girl all she knows. It is here that she learns her first important lesson: Always love someone who will love you back. When Maria is abandoned by the man who has declared his love for her, she follows him to Salem, Massachusetts. Here she invokes the curse that will haunt her family. And it’s here that she learns the rules of magic and the lesson that she will carry with her for the rest of her life. Love is the only thing that matters.

MARIAH CAREY – The Rarities

Spice girl Melanie C releases her new self-titled studio album this month. The album will arrive nearly 21 years to the day after Melanie’s debut solo album, Northern Star. She previously released the singles “Who I Am” in March and “High Heels” this past November. Melanie C previously reunited with her former Spice Girls for a 2019 reunion tour (minus Victoria “Posh Spice” Beckham). The popstar has revealed she channelled her inner sporty spice for this new release explaining, ´I felt it was time to embrace everything about myself; Sporty, Melanie, mum, girlfriend, cleaner, cook, therapist. And I wanted it to be empowering and fun.’ Talking of this new chapter she added, ´This one is different because I have massive new changes behind the scenes, new management. Not many people survived the cut.´ With that said, we are excited to see what this Spice Girl has in store for us!

British singer, Katie Melua previously released single, A Love Like That, from the album, Album No. 8, out this month. Smoky, slow and atmospheric, with a vibe fit for the soundtrack of a classic spy movie, the song was accompanied by a music video directed by Charlie Lightening. Katie Melua is one of Britain’s most successful musical artists, with a catalogue that has been certified 56 times platinum around the globe. Originally from Tbilisi, in the former Soviet republic of Georgia, Melua moved to the UK at the age of eight. Something of a prodigious musical talent, she released her debut album Call Off The Search when she was just 19 years old. Since then, Melua has released seven UK Top 10 studio albums: Call Off The Search, Piece By Piece, Pictures, The House, Secret Symphony, Ketevan and, most recently, 2016’s self-produced, critically acclaimed In Winter, which she recorded with the Gori Women’s Choir in her native Georgia. She and Kate Bush are the only two British female artists in UK chart history to reach the Top Ten with seven consecutive albums.

To celebrate her three-decade career, Mariah Carey is releasing a compilation album, ‘The Rarities’ which will include unreleased tracks, demos and B-sides. The compilation will feature recordings from across Carey’s three-decade career, from 1990 to 2020, some of which will be explored in her upcoming memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey. It will also include a second disc of never-beforereleased full-length audio from Live at the Tokyo Dome, Carey’s first live performance in Japan during her 1996 Daydream World Tour. The Rarities will also include Carey’s newly recorded song “Save the Day.” The song contains a Lauryn Hill sample from the Fugees’ rendition of “Killing Me Softly With His Song.” The Rarities is part of Carey’s #MC30 campaign, celebrating the 30th anniversary of her debut album with weekly releases, including digital EPs, remixes, bonus cuts, rare tracks, a cappella renditions and live performances. Carey has also shared video footage, photos and personal notes on her social media pages, alongside physical releases. #MC30 kicked off with the release of The Live Debut – 1990 in July.

ETERNAL BEAUTY Starring: Sally Hawkins, Alice Lowe, Billie Piper Eternal Beauty follows the story of Jane who, after being left at the altar, had a breakdown which spiralled into a chaotic episode of schizophrenia lasting twenty years in which love (both real and imagined) and family relationships collide.

DEATH ON THE NILE Starring; Kenneth Branagh, Gal Gadot, Letitia Wright

CANDYMAN Starring: Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Teyonah Parris, Tony Todd For as long as the residents can remember, the housing projects of Chicago´s Cabrini Green neighbourhood were terrorized by a word-of-mouth ghost story about a supernatural killer with a hook for a hand, easily summoned by those daring to repeat his name five times into a mirror. In present day, a decade after the last of the Cabrini towers were torn down, visual artist Anthony McCoy and his girlfriend, gallery director Brianna Cartwright, move into a luxury loft condo in Cabrini, now gentrified beyond recognition and inhabited by upwardly mobile millennials.

The Pandemic Generation Will our children carry the scars of this global tragedy forever? Victoria Wood is a freelance writer and mother of three based in the south of Spain. Life for her is primarily based around a healthy diet, lifestyle and educating herself and those around her how to live well. Victoria has been a writer for the past twenty years and her work includes an environmental column, journalistic editorials and social media management. She is also a proofreader and editor, and is currently working on her first novel.

If

you have young children you may well be having a pretty difficult time with the ‘back to school’ or ‘new normal’ routine, much as I loathe having to use that phrase, it does effectively describe what we are seemingly experiencing. So much so that it gives the impression that this normality is here to stay for the foreseeable. Wearing a mask during the school day has become a mandatory situation for many children, but even for the really little ones for whom it is not deemed essential, seeing people in masks in their previously happy, smiley life and school environment is essentially quite disturbing. Teachers are opting to wear transparent visors as opposed to nose and mouth covering masks, yet so many of the students, parents and faculty will have the majority of their faces covered most of the time. You really cannot tell what a person’s expression looks like underneath - the idea that the eyes are the windows to the soul sadly falls by the wayside when the rest of the face cannot be read.

We have just put our kids back in school after over two years of being homeschooled and attending online school, so this was a major step for them to re-enter the social schooling world. Sadly, not being able to communicate or interact as they typically

38

would has put restraints on the natural flow of getting to know people. However, being back in a place surrounded by their peers is still managing to have a positive effect. They are making friends, and it is evident that children work to support each other during difficult times, they are sympathetic towards one another and the adaptation to this new normal that they have no choice but to adhere to. There are some strange, illogical rules being set in place and as parents, it is difficult not to feel sorry or worried for children having to be restrained for most of the day wearing masks, not taking part in after-school activities and having minimal if not zero interaction with their class mates and teachers. I’m not entirely sure why we are permitted to eat in a restaurant with friends or family from other households and remove our masks when seated, yet children in some schools are not permitted to remove their masks whilst seated at their now socially distanced desks! I’m struggling to find the logic there.

TO L I M I T T H E SPREAD OF THE VIRUS OF COURSE WE MUST LIMIT C O N TA C T A N D MASKS WILL AID THIS So I completely understand that when moving around the school they must be worn, but seated at a desk trying to focus on school work rather than whether you can breathe properly or that your

glasses keep getting steamed up, just doesn’t make any sense to me. Despite the vast alterations, it is still a positive thing that children are being given structure and routine back to their lives; the sheer rhythm of going to school, learning, seeing friends, communicating with others is all a healthy and positive step away from the limitations we all suffered during lockdown. However, we must continue to be aware that possible psychological issues may well be caused by any number of things ensued by this pandemic and how it has been dealt with. By this I do not wish to cause alarm, but it is very difficult to tell how and what affects our children in the long term. I have some very strange recollections of events that affected me deeply from my childhood that my mother can’t even recall happening. That is absolutely not because she was a bad parent or absent in any way, it just wasn’t something that she noticed affected me. During this pandemic our children have experienced some extremely different circumstances and possibly anxiety, fear and distress, caused by something very real that is taking lives all over the world. They may have felt fear of themselves getting sick, or worry that a loved one could potentially die, they may have even lost a close relative to the virus; it is serious and they are very aware of it. It could simply stem from the extent of the changes to their regular life that they have endured, especially lockdown. So what do we do to try and make sure our next generation are not heading for a potentially scarred future due to this global tragedy? The main thing we need to develop, as parents, with our children is trust. They need to have it implicitly and it must never waiver though they would probably forgive us naturally due to

their unconditional love and natural forgiveness - but our job is to maintain a solid foundation of trust that we can build on throughout their childhood and on into adulthood.

IF WE DON’T L I S T E N TO T H E M A N D R E A L LY S E E A N D H E A R W H AT THEY ARE TELLING US, THEN WE ARE N OT D O I N G O U R JOBS, RIGHT? You see it so often in movies when the kid is pulling at the dad’s trouser leg or tapping mum on the arm wanting to tell them something as urgent as that the dog is about to fall off the cliff right ahead of them, and the parent hushes them, ignores them, makes them wait or half-heartedly listens whilst thinking about something completely different - in the meantime the dog plummets to its imminent death. Sorry for the morbidity of the example, but we do need to recognise when our children are really trying to tell us something. It is very hard for us parents to differentiate between a serious need to be heard with relevant reasons, and a rambling twenty minute story about how Lucy got her hair stuck in the swing but was totally fine. And so it is important that we keep an eye on our filter - or what we focus on listening to. What if at the end of the story about Lucy your child actually said that they now have a terrible fear of swings, and you missed that part having switched off at “today me and Lucy were…”, how do we know what is important and what isn’t? If we listen to every little thing then we may end up drowning in it and missing the meaningful bits. I feel that the best way to solve this conundrum is to ask questions (especially if yours

are non-talkers), to really learn how to communicate with our children, be in tune with who they are becoming and what makes them tick, what makes them squirm, etc. To put this into effect we will have to ask relevant questions, then we can get to know them and their feelings better rather than waiting to hear it from them and potentially have to decipher long-winded explanations that may or may not have meaningful endings. We would have to try to find ways to get to the root of problems, rather than simply find solutions. Find out how they feel about certain things and, just as importantly, why. We must also express a genuine (they can read minds you know) level of empathy and understanding, never dismissing their opinions

or reactions but rather attempting to level with them and put ourselves in their shoes. Not literally, that could hurt. When we are listening to them they need to feel like we are actually there, we care and we know what they mean. After they have finished we can then interject with “why do you think you reacted that way?”, or “what made you feel like that?” to try and uncover any underlying feelings. During the pandemic it is important that we communicate well with the children about what is going on without striking fear into their hearts. A simple, honest explanation is all that is necessary to maintain that trust and let them know that they are part of this with you, you’re not hiding anything and they are safe.

These are strange days for us all - we don’t know what is going to happen next, we have limited control over our own lives (not to mention our children’s lives) and find ourselves in various unchartered territories from one day to the next. As long as we stay positive and try to make sense of all this as a unit, team up and talk it out, we are on the right track to keeping it real and protecting ourselves and our families both mentally and physically.

e’ve understood for some time now how fundamentally important sleep is to us, classified somewhere alongside diet and exercise in the pursuit of a healthy, happy life. The reality however is we’re sleeping less than ever. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), on average, adults these days are getting less than seven hours per night, whilst optimal functionality occurs somewhere between seven and nine. I slept eight last night, which is why I was able to use the phrase “...whilst optimal functionality occurs...” Had I managed just four hours, I’d have said “and being gooder at stuff happens...”

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

Whilst young children and teens require even more to aid their healthy development, it’s posited today’s busy, screen-addicted culture might just be messing with our circadian rhythms (4hr version: sleepy clocks) Just because many of us think we feel ok on less sleep, research shows we’re generally not operating how we should be if we’re not getting the zzzzzz’s in and the long term consequences can be dire. Forget the very real phenomenon of microsleep and the chance one could see you wrap your car round a lamppost or dribble on yourself during a Tinder date, prolonged poor sleep commonly leads to weight gain, diabetes, reduced cognitive function, depression, anxiety, heart disease, strokes, inflammation, compromised immune systems, puffy eyes, flies going in your mouth when you yawn.... It might not be news but it bears repeating that you can improve your sleep quality and duration by following these guidelines. Ensure you are physically active in the day and experience sunshine on your skin early on for healthy hormone promotion. Avoid coffee after midday – caffeine has a surprisingly long “half life” in your system. Cigarettes and alcohol also disrupt sleep. Keep the bedroom for sleep and sex. It should be a sanctuary for rest, ideally not an office or social space. Go to bed at a consistent hour in a dark, quiet, cool room. Choose to get up at a consistent time. (For parents of young children, remove the element of choice.... also remove sex.....ADD caffeine....) Avoid screens or blue light in the hour or two before sleep so you

don’t send mixed signals to your brain. If you really can’t live without Netflix, enable night time mode if your device allows or purchase some blue light filtering specs, available cheaply online. Don’t share a bed with my partner, unless regular spasmodic kicks help you slumber. Beyond the well established ingredients of a healthy sleep diet, we’re witnessing increased recognition of the benefits of certain music and sounds on sleep quality. Where “sleep music” once existed on the fringes, it’s recently become more mainstream, as various ambient artists have even begun to collaborate with sleep therapists to scientifically tailor their productions to the goal of better sleep. With this year’s pandemic spreading far more anxiety than virus, the popularity of wellness apps and relaxation streams on platforms such as YouTube and Spotify has soared. Empirical evidence from scientific studies (ie. the opposite of Baz down the pub’s opinion) shows soothing music can cause a direct response in the parasympathetic nervous system which aids the body in relaxing before sleep. A trial conducted on older adults in a Taiwanese hospital showed participants who listened to 45 minutes of relaxing music before bed dozed off quicker, slept longer and were less prone to waking. Whilst this may not sound revelatory – relaxing music relaxes you – its application could be game changing for many, quelling racing thoughts and establishing better sleep routines,

EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE FROM SCIENTIFIC STUDIES (IE. THE OPPOSITE OF BAZ DOWN THE PUB’S OPINION) SHOWS SOOTHING MUSIC CAN CAUSE A DIRECT RESPONSE IN THE PARASYMPATHETIC NERVOUS SYSTEM WHICH AIDS THE BODY IN RELAXING BEFORE SLEEP.

especially useful for victims of trauma and anxiety. Experts believe the broadening field could one day see tailored audible content as effective as sleeping pills, minus the shady chemicals. Electronic musician Tom Middleton spent the period before releasing 2018’s eight part Sleep Better working alongside neuroscientists at sleep labs to engineer harmony, rhythm, frequency and ambient sound on scientific foundations supporting better sleep. As Middleton explains it, we can use sound to essential rewire our brain and cause drowsiness. “The main challenge is if we can keep people in the various states of sleep, such as restorative delta wave sleep.” (Time Magazine, Aug 2020) The smart money says we’ll get there. Last year the NIH awarded $20 million to research projects concerned with music therapy and neuroscience. Let’s hope the frankly parodic shiteness of global affairs these last few years is simply the result of world leaders missing a few winks and the answer to the world’s spiralling problems turns out to be the right tunes before bed. Glibness aside, you’re not necessarily missing out by sleeping more. Instead you could be enriching the quality, alertness and joy of your waking hours whilst extending your life expectancy significantly. If you’re still not convinced, a quick google of “creatures which don’t sleep” should have you swiftly reaching for the earplugs, eye mask and Horlicks. It’s a veritable roll-call of the true reprobates of the animal kingdom – Insects (creepy little fuckers), sea urchins (pricks), jellyfish (I mean...??... They haven’t even got brains!), baby dolphins - What?! Baby dolphins??! Ok, they’re the exception, but the rest are wronguns. The boffins who compiled this list have failed to realise the obvious link that most of these guys live in the sea and of course you can’t sleep if you live in the sea cos you’ll drown. Nevertheless, the message is clear: If you don’t get enough sleep eventually you’ll become a brainless jellyfish. And don’t go thinking, “yeah but I might get baby dolphin” cos you’re just as likely to get sea urchin.. more so. How many baby dolphins have you seen? How many sea urchins?... Case closed. Can you really take that risk? Go to bed.

This may come as a surprise to some, but high vibrational energy is just as important as nutrition and exercise when it comes to overall health. I can tell you, firsthand, that vibrational energy was a significant factor in allowing me to overcome numerous health issues. Changing my vibrational energy positively impacted me emotionally, spiritually, and physically. There are ways to raise your vibrations and protect your energetic field through the foods that you consume. I started employing this strategy ten years ago when I became a certified Holistic Nutritionist and it has helped me (and my clients!) momentously ever since. Understanding the energetic vibrations around food allowed me to heal myself from multiple health issues including cancer, hypothyroid, Hashimoto’s, celiac, anxiety, hormonal issues, eczema, etc. The energies around the food we eat might seem like an “out there” concept, but when you tune into your body and mind after a meal, you will find that the resulting energy shift (whether positive or negative) is undeniable. We know that when we eat ultra-processed foods made with refined sugar or unnecessary additives and preservatives, or inflammatory foods like dairy and gluten, that it makes us feel low. We feel sluggish, sleep poorly, have digestive issues, and even become emotionally drained. The people around us pick up on our low frequencies – even if it is on a subconscious level. It becomes harder for us to attract the things that bring us joy. On the other hand, when we consume foods that are real, organic, nutrient-dense, and support our body’s systems, it can help to raise our overall vibration. Have you ever finished drinking a green juice and realized that your spirit was lifted? That is your vibration being enhanced through nutrients.

Some of my favorite vibration-enhancing foods include... Leafy Greens

Arugula, swiss chard, spinach, mustard greens, dandelion greens, and kale are some of my top high vibration foods. They are the equivalent of liquid sunshine and your cells will drink in their goodness like gold if you juice them. For example, dandelion greens are powerful detoxifiers and a great source of vitamins A, C and K. I love eating a mix of leafy greens in salads and soups because, along with all of their vitamins and minerals, they are also high in fiber which is integral for the health of our gut.

Green Vegetables

Broccoli, bok choy, and Brussel sprouts are packed with the phytonutrients that your immune system needs for optimal function. Green vegetables are rich folate, calcium, and antioxidants like

44

lutein and zeaxanthin. Folate is especially important for producing antibodies that work to destroy antigens that can make you sick.

Tea

Tea is another impressive tool that can be used to boost your energetic vibration. Tea is loaded with powerful antioxidants that help enhance your vibes. Green tea has been shown to have a protective effect against certain cancers. Some other teas like chamomile, lemon balm, passionflower, and tulsi can help to calm you, which ends up protecting your energetic field.

Mushrooms

The term “medicinal” is used to describe mushrooms for a reason! A recent study noted that Lion’s Mane mushroom

is “antibiotic, anticarcinogenic, antidiabetic, anti-fatigue, antihypertensive, antihyperlipidemic, anti-senescence [anti-aging], cardioprotective, hepatoprotective, nephroprotective, and neuroprotective, and improves anxiety, cognitive function, and depression.” Can you think of a more vibration-boosting food? Mushrooms may also increase an important immunebalancing compound called secretory IgA. Even the common mushrooms found in most kitchens are powerful vibration enhancers. They contain phytochemicals that work to increase immunity, decrease cancer risk, and more.

Fresh Berries

Berries work to lower inflammation and are high in antioxidants. They are high in fiber, low in sugar, and may help to improve your blood sugar and insulin

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

response. Berries may also help to lower cholesterol and protect against cancer. The main antioxidant compound in blueberries is called pterostilbene which lowers inflammation and fights disease. I love adding fresh berries to smoothies for an extra energetic boost!

Sprouts

I feel so energized after consuming sprouts because they are full of protein and enzymes, which our bodies are constantly in need of. Broccoli sprouts contain sulforaphane – a natural bioactive compound that helps to activate the immune system against viruses. On average, sprouts contain more essential amino acids than their nonsprouted counter-plants.

Fresh Herbs and Spices

I incorporate spices and fresh herbs in my cooking as much as possible. They are antibacterial, anti-fungal, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory which is why many cultures use them as natural forms of medication. Cilantro helps to detox heavy metals and rosemary is packed with antioxidants. Spices have been around for centuries and have amazing healing abilities. Turmeric contains the extraordinarily anti-inflammatory compound curcumin. Cinnamon is delicious and loaded with antioxidants. Spices in general help with digestion, balancing blood pressure, and even with symptoms related to arthritis.

Fermented foods

Fermented foods like tempeh, kimchi, sauerkraut, low sugar kombucha, and coconut kefir are also key in protecting your energetic field. They safeguard the gut, which is the primary location of the immune system and it is integral to keep it balanced and healthy. The gut microbiome is crucial for our mood since it is where the majority of our serotonin is produced and it is also integral for weight loss. I love fermenting my own veggies and eating them throughout the day as snacks.

Nuts and Seeds

Nuts and seeds, especially chia, flax, walnuts, and almonds, are a staple in my kitchen because they are high in protein, fiber, and healthy fat. They are great sources of monounsaturated fat, as well as omega-6 and omega-3 polyunsaturated fat. They are also high in micronutrients like vitamin E, iron, zinc, calcium, and magnesium. They can help to reduce blood sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure. Nuts and seeds are an ideal snack and I love using them as salad and soup toppers.

Onions, Shallots, Scallions, Leeks, Garlic and Chives

Onions contain quercetin, a compound that may have particularly powerful bacteria-fighting abilities, as well as prebiotic fiber that feeds only the beneficial bacteria in the large intestine. They also contain cancer-fighting compounds, help control blood sure, may boost digestive health, and may even positively affect bone density.

Blue-Green Algae

This funky food is one of the healthiest on the planet. It is packed with chlorella and I love adding a serving of it to my smoothie or water with lemon in the

morning to kick off my day in a high-vibe way. Spirulina has proven to lower dangerous LDL and triglyceride levels while simultaneously raising good cholesterol. Some research shows that blue-green algae may reduce blood pressure and promote anti-cancer properties.

Sea Vegetables

While algae tend to gather on still or slow-moving water, sea vegetables are found in the ocean. Dulse is known as a metabolism booster and can help to cleanse and repair the liver. Kelp is especially high in vitamin B and also contains healthy levels of vitamins C and E. I only recommend organic, wild-grown seaweed harvested off of the Atlantic coast because other forms of it can be high in toxins. But if you can get your hands on it, I recommend it because it really helps to increase my vibrational energy.

Beans, Peas and Lentils

I love beans and legumes so much that I am constantly developing new ways to incorporate them into my S.O.U.P. Cleanse. They are rich in resistant starch – carbohydrates not broken down through digestion. These protein-rich foods are full of minerals, fiber, and complex carbs. I especially recommend soaked and sprouted beans and legumes because they are much easier on the digestive system. They are also full of nutrients that help to calm the central nervous system as well as B vitamins and iron.

There are other methods that I use daily to ensure that I am keeping my vibrational frequencies high like meditation, gratitude journaling, reiki, yoga, and meaningful connection with other high vibration people. Start to tap deeper into your energy levels to become more aware of how yours are affected. Notice how you feel after you eat a meal or drink a vegetable juice. Become more aware of what foods keep your vibrations high. Take note of the things you attract when your vibrational energy is elevated versus when it is low. I guarantee you will start to notice some trends.

with Health and a little help from Cannabinoids It’s the glorious month of October and with the cooler winds and longer nights ahead, we all know the seasonal coughs and colds are coming. Now with the added fear of Covid-19 it is even more important to keep fit and healthy.

With our bodies being in a continuous state of fight or flight mode, we are in danger of becoming run down. Wearing masks for prolonged periods of time is seriously unhealthy. We are continuously breathing in our own carbon-dioxide which normally gets replaced with fresh air and oxygen. These are unprecedented times. The best way is to ensure that we are doing what we can to help heal ourselves the right way by watching what we

eat, what we listen to and how we exercise. It is vitally important that we take control and empower ourselves. As a mother, I am seriously worried about the implications of my children wearing a mask at school. Ensuring that they are as fit and healthy as can be is at the top of my agenda. Filling them with nutritious foods, giving them exercise and teaching them how to stay positive is essential to help them stay calm and content.

Our Endocannabinoid System - ECS The endocannabinoid system is an active part of our body that controls main functions including the central nervous system, hormones and our immune system. Cannabinoids are the compounds found in the cannabis plant; they help infiltrate this system and bring it into balance like a lock and key. There is evidence to suggest that by using CBD as a daily or regular supplement everyone can truly benefit, and that’s why I am such a believer in the cannabis plant. It is important to ensure the endocannabinoid system is getting the right things to help it stay balanced.

48

Supplementing our ECS Most people don’t know that our bodies are making cannabinoids all the time. Our cells produce and use cannabinoids to respond to stress, illness and injury in order to remain healthy and balanced. Aside from cannabis, certain foods and activities can help the endocannabioid system which we will look at now!

Organic Food

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

Eating organic is essential because certain pesticides including chlorpyrifos and piperonyl butoxide are known to disrupt the ECS. Eating a selection of pulses, fruits and vegetables is the key to a healthy body and mind. Always make sure to choose organic when shopping for meat and dairy! Located in Marbella, Sara at the Organic Cold Pressed Juicery is happy to help you stay in balance with an amazing range of detox juices in sustainable packaging. You can now add a drop of CBD to your smoothie too which is perfect to top up your endocannabinoid system and to harmonise your body and senses. My boys love the Royal Bleu which gets its colour from the spirulina, a perfect energizer for them after a long day. Furthermore, incorporating essential fatty acids into your diet will help you obtain optimum health. Start by adding hemp seeds, chia seeds, nuts, oily fish and herbs such as echinacea, cumin, cinnamon and turmeric to boost your system.

ECS Enhancing Sports and Activities

Staying Social With many of us being isolated during the pandemic, there has been an increase in anxiety, stress and suicidal behaviour. In a clinical study carried out on rats in isolation it was discovered that they produced less cannabinoid receptors, while social play and grooming behaviour increased the function of their ECS. Make sure you make the most of your time, stimulate yourself by trying new things and socialising with friends.

Enchanting CBD Supper Club Private dining is great but everyone needs to have a little social interaction. Amara Café is just the place to do it. Situated in the park within nature it’s the perfect location to relax and unwind whilst enjoying a wonderful selection of organic and vegan creations. Next month, we will be holding our enchanting CBD supper club with their renowned chef Nacho, there are limited spaces so check out our website and Instagram for details lots of fun foods and activities to follow.

Turn off the news! Find some time for yourself to mediate and enjoy nature, this can really help you unwind. Incorporating exercise into your day will keep your ECS well-tuned. Join a gym or participate in a class, this can really help get you into a healthy routine. Dynamic Marbella have a fantastic selection of classes with professional trainers that can help you keep motivated. CBD yoga and breathing exercises are also great for building a healthy system from the inside out. I also offer a series of energy healing session which is great for connecting the mind and body, leaving you feeling more relaxed and inspired. Finally, let us not forget the benefits of massage, our skin has a huge number of receptors making it ideal to treat with some indulgent TLE Elite massage oil for either relaxation or repair! Magdalena based at Aaura Beauty and Wellness can work some magic leaving your body feeling energised and your mind focused.

Reach out to our TLE Army of Angels Everything around us as has an effect on our system, especially what we consume, so make sure it’s good for you and do what makes you feel happy! We hold virtual consultations online, as well as at exclusive locations in Marbella, Barcelona, London, Liverpool, Paris and Stockholm. REDEFINING THE

REAL ESTATE LANDSCAPE

Sirena Kiviranta talks to Sabrina Raven about all things Real Estate A brand-new bespoke agency set to rewrite the rules in Marbella Real Estate. Despite the ever-expanding plethora of agencies operating across the coast, Strand Properties have identified and filled a clear gap in the market.

The Backstory

homeland’s property market. With over 200 agents and offices in 15 cities, they then sold the company, Bo, for a mightily impressive eight-figure sum. Now, they are set go full-circle having returned to Marbella with the same values.

A question of Style

Finnish husband and wife duo, Anssi and The success of the couple’s company Sirena Kiviranta, first came to Marbella can be traced back to a number when their children were young. Hearing of different attributes. When Bo was stories of the coast’s unique real estate born, agencies in Finland didn’t use market sparked their interest in the social media or proper styling to shoot sector. Upon inspection, they saw flaws properties. In Sirena’s own words, ‘we in many aspects of the industry brought visuality to that could clearly be improved the business’, stepping on, this made them excited into their slick offices in “...It’s about for what could be. However, Marbella, this is blatantly feeling, you before Anssi & Sirena had obvious. Sirena tells me, the chance to delve into the ‘When you are buying are buying property market in Marbella, something as special as the feeling’...” the couple made the decision a property, you really to uproot and return to Finland need attention to detail. for their children’s schooling. It’s about feeling, you are buying the feeling’. Taking what they had learnt in Spain with them, the pair decided to start a real Strand Properties is different precisely estate agency from scratch in Finland. because of their ability to style. Real Fast forward five and a half years, the Estate in Marbella is a long-established couple became major players in their institution, and like many institutions,

64

there is an innate stubbornness to change. Some companies use deceiving photographs of properties in an attempt to lure prospective buyers. Instead, Strand teases prospects with enticing images that provide a snapshot into a property. With them, the focus is shifted to impeccable style, exceptional customer service and transparency.

...The team are hoping to create a membership scheme whereby buyers and sellers alike can join together at exclusive Strand events.

The focus is shifted to impeccable style, exceptional customer service and transparency.

Team Spirit Perhaps the most ‘stylish’ quality Strand Properties possess is the way they treat one another. The fact that husband and wife are able to work together in such a complimentary fashion says a lot. The wider team is comprised of a number of professionals with vast experience of the property market in Marbella, Sirena proudly speaks of her employees as people with presence and a strong work ethic. ‘The team trust each other 100%, otherwise you cannot work together’. Team mentality at Strand Properties is strong, this is helped by the fact that you get back whatever you give working for the company. Unlike most real estate agencies, commissions are divided 30% - 70% in the favour of agents. Sirena recognises that her team are essentially the ones doing all the hard work so should be appropriately rewarded.

More than Just A Real Estate Company Strand Properties’ difference is palpable, something else we can attribute to that is their vision to create an exclusive lifestyle brand. They have great plans for the future which remain untainted by the current pandemic. Sirena explains,

the team are hoping to create a membership scheme whereby buyers and sellers alike can join together at exclusive Strand events. ‘Customers are like extended family; we want to keep them happy and at the same time this helps them make friends’. Already included in their services is advice on where to buy quality Scandinavian furniture, how to decorate, home renovations, and where to get the best Jacuzzi’s. FYI: the pair have their own Jacuzzi company, examples displayed on the terrace of their fantastic multi-functional office.

The Future just got closer No matter what, Marbella is always going to attract high-spending real estate clientele. Anssi & Sirena recognise that and remain optimistic for the future of the property market. Particularly when it comes to their Scandinavian counterparts, who will want to escape as soon as winter hits. Without a doubt, Strand Properties are set to become a staple of the Marbella real estate scene, making an indelible impact on the way Real Estate companies operate here on the coast. For sure they are a New-age force to be reckoned with. strandproperties.com

hat does a working woman do in her spare time to wind down and release the pressure of business – golf, golf, golf. I feel very privileged to be a member of Royal Las Brisas Golf Club, so I utilise as much time as possible improving my handicap, although it is a challenge! What better way is there to relax than surrounding yourself with amazing tranquil scenery, immaculately maintained, looking for a little white ball, followed by a chilled glass of white wine while socialising with your interesting, fun co-golfers. Not only is golf a fabulous hobby of mine but also a fantastic Real Estate marketing tool. Upon realising what an opportunity I have being member of this stunning course, I decided three years ago to host my own golf tournament – the IM Cup. The first year proved such a success with a fully subscribed one day competition that the following year I was asked to spread the tournament over two days allowing for more members and guests to participate. Starting with a breakfast bag my guests were off. At the halfway Chiringuito, a few tapas followed, and on the Saturday a BBQ party, sponsored by La Sala and live music. On the final day, a cocktail prize-giving took place, followed by a 4-course Gala Dinner Dance. We had a ball and I must say the standard of game was amazing. During dinner there was not only free raffles, but also music by Rody Kinn. The party concluded with hours of dancing to a famous DJ. With many of my friends being members of Aloha Golf the plan for

2020 was an April two day IM Cup 21 at Las Brisas to be challenged with an IM Cup at Aloha – sadly due to the current situation both were cancelled. I am very optimistic about being able to host the IM Cup 21 next year.

Scan my QR code and watch the video kindly produced by Warner Brothers showing what fun IM Cup 19 turned out to be. Thank you my fellow Las Brisas members, friends and team in the office for making it all happen.

The Art

OF INTERIOR DESIGN

Vista Lago Residences is a new luxury development of 18 individually designed sustainable villas overlooking Marbella, where the views towards Gibraltar and Africa are arguably among the best in the world. The setting is unique, right in the middle of the country club estate of Real de la Quinta, bordering a UNESCO biosphere reserve and just a 15-minute drive from Marbella. George Bernard Shaw said that art is craft very well done. He could have been talking about interior design, because at the level these unique villas have been designed, they are all fine examples of the art of interior design.

THE EXCEPTIONAL, TRANSFORMATIVE DESIGN THAT THEY HAVE CREATED HAS TURNED A DEVELOPMENT OF LUXURY VILLAS INTO A WORLD CLASS WORK OF ARCHITECTURAL & INTERIOR DESIGN.

All 18 villas in Vista Lago have been designed by UDesign Architect Studio, and the exceptional, transformative design that they have created has turned a development of luxury villas into a world class work of architectural & interior design.

Keep it Real

THESE INTERIORS GREW WITH THE BUILDING ITSELF, IN SOME CASES PRECEDING IT, WITH SOME ROOMS DESIGNED AROUND A SINGLE PIECE OF FURNITURE THAT EXISTED BEFORE THE VILLA ITSELF WAS DESIGNED. All the villas have been designed and decorated differently. Not just tweaked to appear different at a glance, but very different, both inside and out, as if each were a separate entity totally independent of the next, which indeed they all are. If they have one thing in common, apart from each being exquisitely designed and built (and excusing the apparent contradiction in terms), it is the very fact that they are all different. “Inside each villa,” Jason Harris, CEO and Creative Director of UDesign, says, “nothing stands in the way of the view. The windows slide into the wall, to bring the living area out into the terrace, becoming an extension of the house itself. Even closed, you see very little of the window frame. All are open plan, with no walls in the living spaces and columns reduced to the minimum. All the furniture in the villas has been chosen

or designed exclusively for them, either by UDesign or by other top designers.” Any guests staying in a Vista Lago villa will certainly come away thinking: I love that lamp, or that piece of furniture. I’ll go out and buy one like it. But they can’t, because what they see and admire is not available on the open market. What is used in these villas is an excellent demonstration of knowledge of the use of new materials and products that have rarely been used in such ways before, either in private residences or in development homes. Interior design does not accurately describe how these interiors were designed, because that suggests a group of designers coming in once construction work is finished and

designing the interiors. Nothing could be further from the truth. These interiors grew with the building itself, in some cases preceding it, with some rooms designed around a single piece of furniture that existed before the villa itself was designed. Each of the 18 villas has been individually designed and clients can choose both the villa they want and the furniture and fittings in it, or in any of the other villas. There is a contemporary style to suit everyones’ taste, from bold and bright, to elegant and classical. For more information on this one-of-akind project, or to reserve your villa, contact BRIGHT on (+34) 648 981 111 or email info@by-bright.com vistalago.es

We attended... the latest addition to the coast’s culinary circuit Cascada Marbella. Nestled in the la Concha foothills just two minutes behind La Cañada, this hidden gem is set to become the new “go to” for lovers of fine local gastronomy.

We were delighted by… the freshness of the locally sourced produce together with very realistic pricing for such a high quality offering.

We were happy to learn… that the venue is also available to hire for weddings and private events as well as offering yoga and conference facilities for small / medium gatherings.

Congratulations and a big thanks to... the talented and dynamic team at Cascada Marbella for delivering a first class dining experience in such beautiful and relaxed surroundings. +34 623 001 465 | cascadamarbella.com

Knock knock , Who s there? , It s me, climate change

Why are you here now? I never left! By Sudhanshu Malhotra

T

his might be a simple script for a social media meme, but it is also the harsh reality of our times. While we all were rightfully occupied with the pandemic and taking care of our loved ones, the other monster – climate change – has been and will continue to lurk in the background. If you were expecting for everything to go back to how things used to be, go back to our heavy reliance on the monstrous fossil fuels after COVID is over, then it is time to wake up. There won’t be a magical divine intervention. Floods in South Asia are now an annual event, situations becoming more viciousevery year. This year, about a total of 9.6 million people have been affected due to these floods.

About 10,000 people have been evacuated in Anhui and Hubei provinces in China due to severe flooding and landslides following one of the heaviest rainfalls in decades. A total of 37.89 million people have been affected in China alone. Onethird of Bangladesh was flooded, with 2.8 million people affected . About 6.8 million were affected in the northeastern part of India. Nepal, Indonesia, and Japan have also been devastated by massive floods in the last few months.

2020, a year for the history books,

it all started with the Australian Black Summer. Following what seems like a never-ending series of disastrous events, we now find ourselves in October and California is ablaze – it’s like déjà vu. The first clusters of fires began in August, by September 7th, 718 fires had burned down 3.7 million acres of land, and there are still two more months of fire season to get through. It’s October now and as firefighters concentrate all their efforts to contain the flames, it’s hard for anyone to analyse the full extent of the damage caused. In Los Angeles, help is rallied from surrounding states in an attempt to contain the so-called Bobcat fire. To date, the fire has burned over 100,000 acres, making it the largest in the city’s history. Overall more than 20 people have tragically lost their lives, including a firefighter caught in the merciless blaze. Many are now left homeless with nowhere to turn to, people and animals alike.

As the fire engulfs all surrounding vegetation, it’s hard not to think of the countless animals that have permanently lost their natural habitat. The world looks on as locals are seen rescuing abandoned cats and dogs, confused farm animals have nowhere to go, and wild horses gallop away from the flames leaving behind what used to be their home.

Rising temperatures and an increase in droughts create the perfect conditions for fires to grow larger and more devastating. Since the industrial revolution, temperatures have been on a steady rise due to the increase of carbon monoxide in our atmosphere. As long as we continue to burn fossil fuels, fires are bound to wreak havoc worldwide.

The Global Warming Catalyst

To put it into perspective, California’s temperatures have gone up by 3 degrees Fahrenheit since the late1800s. It may not seem like a lot but even the slightest change can make the biggest difference. This is a major reason as to why the fires have got so out of hand, warm air sucks up every drop of moisture it can get, from plants, ground, trees, etc. The landscape has become incredibly dry leaving it vulnerable to the smallest spark.

While all this devastation goes on, human nature automatically wants to place the blame somewhere in attempt to rationalise. Some fault response times and evacuation orders, which were complicated by a major heatwave and the ongoing pandemic. However, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection may have an answer, drying and heating from human-induced climate change is said to be the main culprit here.

Terrible Trump In recent years, it seems like the world has opened their eyes to the effects of global warming. Activists like Gretta Thunberg have shed light on the fact that we can all do our bit to help, but ultimately real change lies with those in power. Following presidential duties, President Donald Trump attended a briefing with California officials where they pleaded with him to recognise the role

of climate change in the fires. During the conference, officials urged that the only way to combat the problem is to use the science of global warming. Despite the seriousness of the issue, in his usual half-joking half-serious style, Trump assured ‘it will start getting colder’ and that ‘science doesn’t know’. Some might say, a tactic to avoid facing this complicated issue.

What Rising temperatures Next? and an increase in As we move into droughts create the November, the last of the fire perfect conditions month season, the world for fires to grow must sit tight and hope firefighters will larger and more gain the upper hand. Nevertheless, next devastating.

To an extent, Trump’s sentiments are being echoed throughout news headlines as reporters shy away from connecting the fires with global warming. Thunberg recently took to Twitter in an attempt to expose the media: ‘Reporting is not enough. Connecting the dots is not enough. Mentioning the link to the climate crisis is not enough (even though it would kind of help…)’. There is some hope as the Biden-Obama administration was strong on climate change, putting regulations in place in an attempt to control the situation.

Since Trump’s inauguration, a lot of the work has been undone and replaced by weaker rules. Fortunately, there is some hope as presidential election candidate Joe Biden is the new favourite to take over in the White House.

year’s season will soon come along and unless something is done about climate change, the fires could cause another round of devastation, potentially worse and even more life-threatening. For those of us too far away to physically help, there are a number of ways to do so. You can donate on the following websites: www.redcross.org, www. cafirefoundation.org & uwba.org.

What would you do?.... You’ve co founded a globallyrecognised company whose objective is to remind the world how crucial renewable energy is for our continued survival and in the process created the best-selling electric car of all time. Despite its popularity, said company’s most profitable year saw a loss of $862 million and the majority of the world still likes burning oil so you’ve turned your gaze upwards.... if we can’t save the Earth, we need to get off it sharpish. You’ve founded Space X on the principle that to survive long-term as a species, we must become a space-faring race. Our first port of call? – Mars. Your team have designed incredible, unmanned rockets capable of delivering a large interplanetary payload into low Earth orbit, before returning to touch down safely on Terra Firma. To promote the endeavour and the rocket’s capabilities, you’ve blasted one of those very electric cars into space (not gonna do much good for us up there is it??) The world has watched spellbound and inspired, then returned to burning tyres and luzzing plastic at sea creatures. Even the most optimistic observer notes a colony on Mars is still a looooong way off – try 140 million miles.... Your own lofty ambitions don’t have us setting up shop for at least a couple more decades by which time you’ll have run out of TV shows and films to cameo in. You’ve done Simpsons, South Park, The Big Bang Theory, Iron Man 2...so what next?

It’s obvious isn’t it? Brain implant in a pig.

Yep, last month Elon Musk once again made headlines when he showcased on a live stream several swine carrying the products of another of his startups, Neuralink. The pigs in question, led by the charismatic Gertrude (real star quality) had the coin-sized devices fully embedded in their skulls, with more than 1000 threadlike, flexible electrodes reaching into their cerebral cortices where numerous functions such as motor control and sensory feedback are governed. By amplifying and relaying signals from the cortex to a nearby computer via a super sciencey computer chip and a dose of bluetooth, Musk hopes the interface he glibly referred to as a porcine “Fitbit” can one day solve a host of spinal and neurological conditions, returning movement to victims of paralysis or restoring sight to the blind.... The ultimate goal of creating a super-strong army of uber-obedient, crime-fighting hogs is of course implicit. But bluetooth animals though??! Just think; the next time you’re searching for available devices near your iPhone, you might be able to convince a duck to steal you a croissant or have a horse kick a traffic warden in the arse.

the asthma inhaler in the 70s. Gertrude’s grandparents helped us create the MRI in the 80s and we can thank monkeys for the development of HIV-suppressing drugs in the 90s and rabbits from the noughties for the cervical cancer vaccine. Of course Noah, a human, ultimately deserves the credit cos he bundled this lot in a boat that time it chucked it down but undeniably, it’s by standing on the shoulders of our critter comrades (do animals have shoulders?? Potential future article there...) that we’ve been able to peer as far as we have into the future of scientific possibility.

IS MUSK TO BECOME THIS EPOCH’S NOAH, BUILDING HIS ARK NOT OF WOOD, BUT SHINY SPACE ROCKET COMPONENTS?

Of course, not everyone is down with us tampering with animals to advance our own species and many of us probably spat our bacon sarnies out when reading that Musk was trying to inception some livestock, but the reality is we owe animal testing for much more than 24 hour lipstick and CK One (CLASSIC fragrance!) Many major advances in medicine would not have been achieved without it. Going back a full century, dogs helped us realise the efficacy of treating diabetes with insulin in 1920. Two decades later, the effectiveness of penicillin as an antibiotic was proven in manky mice and in the 50s, hip prostheses were developed using wobbly sheep. Sad rats in the 60s helped us better understand antidepressants and wheezy guinea pigs lent their misfortune to the development of

Research currently being conducted on rats and mice is seeing advances in the battle against Alzheimers, cancer, Parkinson’s and even the process of ageing itself. Brilliant teams around the globe are using cutting edge technologies to keep us living longer and healthier lives. But more people living longer means more strain on the already buckling planet and so, bonkers as it seems, we’re back to looking for possible solutions off-world. So is Musk to become this epoch’s Noah, building his ark not of wood, but shiny space rocket components? Can he deliver a chosen few to salvation before the final flood comes? He’s certainly got the PR clout and social media presence Noah lacked (It’s unfair to expect Noah to have had a presence on Twitter since the Old Testament was literally AGES ago, but not even Myspace...?!!?) but if our continued existence is as dependent on animals as our scientific past suggests, is Musk the man to convince them to go two by two? He might have the pigs onside but cynics would argue they’re just following electronically delivered orders. Besides, the phrase doesn’t go “Happy as a pig in... space” so they’ll probably prefer to stay put, come what may. You lose the popular pig vote, and you can kiss goodbye to horses, geese, goats and sheeps since they all seem to knock about together, at least according to the stories I read my son at bedtime. Whatever happens, turn the light off when you leave a room, separate your recycling and remember the scientific debt you owe to our bestial friends the next time you’re swatting a fly, setting a mousetrap or firing a grenade launcher at a cow in Cambodia. Right, “Top 5 animals with/without shoulders”....

MERCEDES’ FIRST E V E R E N T RY I N T H E C O M PA C T S U V CLASS, THE GLB WA S U N V E I L E D AS A CONCEPT C A R AT A U TO SHANGHAI IN APRIL 2019, WITH THE PRODUCTION VERSION P R E S E N T E D AT THE GLS LAUNCH I N U TA H T W O M O N T H S L AT E R .

llllllllllll 94 94

Sharing its basic platform with the A, B, CLA and GLA-Class models, the GLB sits between the GLA and GLC, but lays claim to greater versatility and passenger carrying capacity than its bigger brother. Sitting on a wheelbase stretched by 100mm over the A-Class the GLB’s clever packaging makes it the first and only compact SUV to offer the option of seven-seats. Sufficient leg and headroom in the third row for 1.68m tall passengers means this is not a token gesture only suitable for small children. With the third seat row stowed away the GLB offers a spacious 570 litres boot, which swells to an impressive 1,805 litres (E-Class Estate 1,820 litres) with all the rear seats folded flat. Extra versatility comes from the middle row sliding back and forth on rails, and even when all the way forwards a 1.8 m tall passenger still has adequate legroom. With the seat positioned all the way back leg and headroom is more than generous. Made at Mercedes’ plant in Mexico the GLB’s build quality and finish are second to none. The doors close with a satisfyingly solid old school Mercedes ‘thunk’ and its overall quality sets the bar very high indeed.

l l l GLB 200 The entry-level GLB 200 we drove first is the only model available with frontwheel-drive, and as a vehicle for taking your kids, and their friends to school it works just fine. When you think of a turbocharged 1,332cc motor pulling a near 1,600kg family wagon eyebrows are raised rather high. But the smallest motor in the petrol engine range proved far more civilised and refined than we anticipated. With two on board the power and torque from the small turbocharged motor proved adequate even on hills, but with a full load of passengers the jury is out on any notion of real performance. That said the engineers have done a fine job on the refinement of the M282 family four-cylinder, which features cylinder shut-off for improved economy and emissions. Willing and responsive considering the size and weight of the GLB the motor dispenses its 163hp at 5,500rpm and 250Nm between 1,600 and 4,000rpm in a quite sophisticated manner. Part of this perceived refinement no doubt comes from the very effective engine bay encapsulation that as we later discovered stands the diesel variants in very good stead. Once you reach cruising speed, whether that is 100km/h on a country road or 130km/h on the highway mechanical noise fades into the background, aided by the tall upper ratios of the 7G-DCT dual-clutch transmission. The cylinder shut-off and reactivation is imperceptible.

Thanks to the effective active damping and relatively long wheelbase the GLB 200 exhibits very good chassis composure when pushed hard on a twisty road. Only when accelerating hard in the lower gears in slippery conditions does it betray its lack of 4Matic credentials with wheelspin and axle tramp if you give it full beans in first gear before the ESP cuts in. However, Mercedes has correctly judged that this model is most likely to do duty taking kids to school in an urban or suburban environment where this will likely never be an issue.

l l l GLB 250 4Matic With 224hp at 5,500rpm and 350Nm of torque from 1,800-4,000rpm the GLB 250 4Matic convincingly addresses the power and torque deficit of its smaller-engined brother. Taking 6.9 sec for the 0-100km/h sprint and topping out at 236km/h the GLB 250 comes across as the consummate all-rounder in the petrol engine range with its fine balance of comfort and performance. This comes as no real surprise since the same is true for the A 250 and CLA 250 models.

Apart from being front-wheel-drive the entry-level GLB 200 is the only variant that makes do with just seven forward gears, and at 1,555kg it is 115kg lighter than the GLB 250 4Matic. While it is no ball of fire in speed gathering terms the GLB 200 is a fine partner in which to cover long distances in comfort and style. It has a supple and well-judged ride in Comfort mode, while Sport adds improved body control to the mix without eating too much into ride comfort. Many may settle on Sport as their open road default mode.

l l l GLB 200d 4Matic The entry-level 116hp GLB 180d was not at the launch. Like the petrol 200 it is front-wheel-drive only, but is paired with the 8G-DCT dual-clutch transmission fitted to all the other petrol and diesel models.

The old system required a relative speed differential between the front and rear axles for the clutches to lock up. This caused a small time lag and meant that there would always be a moment of wheelspin from rest on a slippery surface before the second axle came into play.

Our diesel experience was confined to the GLB 200d on the off-road course where it really shone. The OM654 family 1,950cc common rail turbo-diesel motor makes 150hp from 3,400 to 4,400rpm and 320Nm of torque from 1,400-3,200rpm. Top speed is 204km/h and the 0-100km/h time is a decent enough 9.0 sec, but as always with diesels the good spread of torque on the fly and impressive fuel economy are where its real strengths lie.

The new electro-mechanical system is able to couple the rear differential from zero speed delivering optimum grip from a standing start irrespective of the coefficient of friction under the four tyre contact patches. It also starts with a 50/50 torque distribution from where power is shifted to either axle according to available grip. Under light throttle load on the flat the system decouples the rear axle to save fuel and lower emissions.

First impressions as we set off were of impressive engine refinement and lack of diesel clatter. In fact from any of the passenger seats you can hardly tell there is a compressionignition motor working away up front. While the hang-on 4Matic is more of a traction-oriented system with some clever electronic helpers rather than a serious challenger to its mighty G-Class big brother, it works pretty well in moderately difficult off-road conditions. Although the latest 4Matic is a hang-on system a major contributor to its seamless performance is the electromechanical actuation that replaces the electro-hydraulic system used before.

96 96

While one of the major keys to mud-plugging ability is the right footwear Mercedes equipped their off-road test cars with winter tyres. “We want to give a realistic impression of the GLB’s off-road capability without resorting to specialised equipment,” said Gerald Feichtinger, the engineer who accompanied us on the off-road course. It had rained almost incessantly since the day before and the mud quickly clogged the treads of the winter tyres rendering them like slicks as we made our way around the off-road course. Nonetheless the 4Matic system was able to claw the GLB itself round quite convincingly, the latest generation of fast acting traction aids working their magic quite unobtrusively in the background.

TORQUE TALK

l l l GLB 35 4Matic AMG’s engineers have done a comprehensive job of giving the GLB 35 4Matic a sporting flair, but as the GLB is Mercedes’ entry-level SUV with a seven-seat option that makes it a family carrier there is a limit to just how much ‘sport’ can be stirred into the mix. Shared with the A 35 and CLA 35 AMG but with unique calibrations for the heavier GLB, the 1,991cc motor M260 motor with its twin-scroll turbocharger and indirect water/ air intercooling is a feisty unit that delivers 306hp at 5,8006,100rpm, underpinned by 400Nm of torque between 3,0004,000rpm. Thus, despite a kerb weight north of 1,700kg the GLB 35 4Matic has more than enough performance to satisfy most people and really comes alive in Sport mode. Project engineer, Bastian Bornemann explained that while boost is set at 1.6 bar with no overboost facility as such, the ECU mapping provides 50Nm more torque in first and second gears in Race Start mode to maximise acceleration off the line. To cope with the extra power and torque the AMG Speedshift DCT 8G dual clutch gearbox contains five clutches instead of the normal four. With the 4Matic system conferring perfect traction off the line the stopwatch records a hot hatch snuffing 5.2 sec for the 0-100km/h sprint. Top speed is electronically limited to 250km/h.

THE SPORTING FEEL OF THE C R I S P T H R OT T L E R E S P O N S E A N D S AT I S F Y I N G P U S H I N T H E B AC K O N F U L L T H R OT T L E I S AIDED AND ABETTED BY A S O N O R O U S A U R A L S I G N AT U R E FROM THE BESPOKE SOUND VA LV E E X H A U S T. Engage Sport mode and its vocal chords drop a further half octave. More musical to our ears than the rortier exhaust note of the A45 AMG, the more sophisticated overtones here are in line with the GLB’s more egalitarian ‘family and friends’ role in life. A stiff body-in-white is the cornerstone of a good ride and handling compromise, and as always this is where the AMG chassis engineers begin their work. Being 100mm longer than the A-Class and with five openings in its body-in-white means the GLB needs a bit of help in the structural stiffness department. The recipe AMG uses for increasing torsional rigidity here is almost exactly the same as on the A45 AMG we drove back in the summer. This starts with a three-piece alloy front suspension strut tower brace clearly visible when you open the bonnet. Under the engine bay, where the cooking models use a plastic undertray as the front section of this aerodynamically flat bottom design, AMG bolt in an alloy panel to provide torsional reinforcement.

The base alloy wheels for the GLB 35 are 19-inch with the option of 20 and 21-inch. There are seven styles to choose from, which include colour variants. Our test car wore the largest of these with 235/35ZR21 Continental SportContact 6 rubber. Behind these big wheels are 380mm diameter vented discs clamped by four pot callipers in front, and 330mm vented discs with single pot callipers at the rear. They stop the GLB 35 very effectively and have good pedal feel at all speeds. The difference the AMG fettled chassis made is very obvious. Steering response is more direct, the front end turning in more keenly and roll in corners reduced. The GLB 35 simply feels more alive and raring to go, and even with the 306 horses in stampede mode the uprated chassis feels capable of handling even more power with room to spare. The downside is that while the 21-inch wheels look great they make the ride a bit firm for our taste, in stark contrast to the supple and well-resolved ride we experienced with the normal GLB variants. We would like to try a GLB 35 wearing the smallest 19-inch wheels in order to deliver the final verdict. Right now there are simply too many cars on sale for buyers to choose from, and Mercedes is as guilty as any car manufacturer of trying to find more niches to fill, sometimes just because they can.

R E C E N T E V E N T S H AV E P R OV E N T H AT E V E N W E A R I N G T H E T H R E E - P O I N T E D S TA R I S N OT E N O U G H TO G U A R A N T E E SALES SUCCESS. Customers have voted with their wallets and Daimler boss Ola Kaellenius has told us that slow selling models will be axed. The once desirable SLC roadster has already ceased production, and the S-Class Cabriolet is not long for this world. The third and final piece of the puzzle is two short diagonal braces that stiffen the connection from the front sub-frame to the bodyshell. These bracing components turn the front of the car into a very stiff ‘box’ that benefits ride and handling. Unlike the A45 and CLA45 AMG models however, there is no reinforcing member at the rear. The revised suspension set-up features AMG specific springs and dampers that reduce the ride height by 20mm. It is noteworthy that even if you specify the optional sport suspension on a normal GLB the ride height is unchanged from standard. The front lower suspension arms are given spherical bushes for improved steering response while the rear bushes remain rubber for bump compliance. The hollow steel anti-roll bars are uprated in both diameter and wall thickness, going to 26.0 x 4.0mm in diameter x wall thickness (GLB 250, 24.0 x 4.2mm) in front and 24.6 x 3.9mm (GLB 250, 21.4 x 4.3 mm) at the rear. The ratio of the revised front to rear bars is interesting as the larger rear bar clearly shows intent to reduce inherent understeer in the AMG version. The alloy rear lower suspension arms are replaced with steel equivalents for added strength, while the rear sub-frame that is normally isolated from the bodyshell with four rubber bushes is now solid mounted to remove any lost motion when lateral loads are applied. As on the front axle the strengthened alloy wheel carriers are fitted with uprated bearings.

Apart from wealthy buyers who can afford several cars to perform varied tasks, today’s discerning buyers of prestige marques also seek, and indeed expect useful and practical features in their daily transport. This is why for many the seven-seats, roomy and well detailed MBUX-equipped cabin, impressive engine and chassis sophistication, and solid build quality all combine to make the new Mercedes GLB a uniquely compelling offer.

PostPandemic Partying The Historically, clubbing and the culture that famous surrounds it, has been a cocoon for beach bars and nightclubs escapism during times of social have been forced to unrest. Bars and discos alike take a back seat this summer have provided a space for as the country grapples with the health crisis. However, as we know, individuals to socialise, this is not a local problem but rather a forget their problems global one. and even Internationally, the nightlife scene is rebel.

However, these same spaces are now faced with their own issues in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. Now, our society’s need to unwind may be greater than ever, but these social spaces and havens have been forced to navigate in a newly antisocial world. The current coronavirus pandemic has fomented unrest on a global scale, not just socially but economically too, as most industries scramble to readapt themselves to the present times. The sector which has been especially hard hit during these times is the hospitality and, more specifically, the nightlife industry.

During the lockdown, many businesses have struggled to stay afloat but even during the ‘new normality’ the nightlife industry has been tainted with an unfavourable reputation. Although only around 10% of outbreaks across Spain originated in cocktail bars or clubs, the sector has received some of the most drastic setbacks. Now, nightclubs have been completely banned from opening and even bars and restaurants have been restricted to 1:00 a.m. curfews. For those accustomed to the hustle and bustle of Marbella, the summer of 2020 will be both atypical and unforgettable.

slowly but surely re-awakening and trying to adapt itself to the new reality. The party collective, Transmission Funk, reignited the flame in Manchester by hosting its first ‘socially distanced’ club night at Hidden. The promoters revelled in the “success” of their first, postpandemic, party as the event was fully sold out and demand is growing for the next one. Although the venue capacity was limited to a humble 150 party-goers, tickets could be bought in groups of five. Metal barricades separated the different groups of friends and ticket holders, ensuring the distance between them and reduced social contact. Venues in other countries with a strong clubbing culture such as The Netherlands and Germany have already begun to find ingenious and innovative ways to party safely. In Holland, clubs like De Marketkantine in Amsterdam, have had to rethink and reschedule their programming for the year. Now tickets are all sold via pre-sale and each person must sit in a designated area during the performance.

Similarly, drive-in raves have been held in Germany. Each car can tune in to the radio which live streams the DJ set and ensures passengers party safely in their car (designated driver is a must!). Another venue, an open-air club in Muster, Germany, called Coconut Beach has also adapted to these unprecedented times by painting brightly coloured circles on the dance floor. These markings are strategically placed so that dancers stay within a safe distance from each other.

These new protocols for a post-pandemic dancefloor are yet to be set in stone, although the Institute of Occupational Medicine has begun its proposal on how these spaces should be regulated. Security measures include a proper ventilation system, thermal monitoring, thorough cleaning of all surfaces, enforced use of face masks and ID scans on all clubbers in case they need to be tracked and traced.

ONE OF THE MOST N OTA B L E M E A S U R E S WILL BE THE LIMITED C A PA C I T I E S I N V E N U E S . This could be good for those who enjoy their own space on the dancefloor as partygoers will no longer be squished in like sardines in a can. However, this could also make partying less accessible, as the number of limited tickets will cause a spike in prices and as profit margins dwindle in the nightlife industry, promoters will also have to find other ways to cut down on expenses. This could be a great thing for the local music community as promoters may shy away from booking international talent and turn towards more local DJs.

when considering the idea of large crowds in relatively small spaces during a health crisis. Firstly, we must appreciate the fact that we are experiencing a global pandemic and the protagonist is a highly contagious virus. The lack of security measures and social distancing can therefore contribute to regional outbreaks. Secondly, the lack of authoritative figures, such as bouncers, has caused havoc during these parties. For example, in June, two ‘quarantine’ raves in Manchester attracted over 6,000 people and ended in three stabbings, leaving one 18-yearold with life-threatening injuries. Lastly, having to use public services, such as the Police force, to shut down these raves, or the NHS, to treat those who have been infected from attending, is a waste of resources which could be better employed elsewhere. Nevertheless, the reality is that the industry must reinvent itself to adapt to the latest circumstances. This in turn could create a permanent change in the way we experience the nightlife industry, or it could become a temporary adjustment until a cure to the coronavirus is found. Either way, it is important to support your local venues in whatever way you can. If the health crisis has taught us anything, it is the importance of solidarity within a community and to give back wherever possible.

Another, more negative, consequence that has emerged from this pandemic has been the return of illegal raving. Loud pumping music in the middle of fields or abandoned warehouses, reminiscent of the ‘Second Summer of Love’, has surprisingly returned thirty years later. The peak of rave culture culminated in 1990 after the UK passed an Entertainment Penalties act which allowed rave promoters to be fined up to £20,0000. Over the last few months, the UK has seen a resurgence in illegal parties, which are announced last-minute via social media and attract thousands of young party-goers. The younger population grew hesitant about when clubs could reopen and this impatience led a few to take matters into their own hands. Previously, pirate radio stations would be used to communicate information about these illegal raves, now with the power of social media, the reach is both instantaneous and infinite. These types of events are problematic for numerous reasons, especially

IGHTS & SENSES...

A N DA L U C Í A

Some of the best things about travelling are the sensory impressions that we retain long after travel photos have become dusty memories in forgotten albums. When I visited India some years back I took several thousand photos, yet what stuck with me were the sensory flashes that I never could capture on camera. Take the Chai Wallahs running along the train at every station selling tea. I can still close my eyes and see them passing the scalding hot glasses through the train window. I can hear them chatting in a mixture of Indian and English, politely yet hurriedly receiving their payment of a few rupees. I can feel the heat of the small glass in my hand, smell the aromatic brew and taste the sweet and subtly spiced chai. No single photo could do this experience justice. Like so many memories, it is a sensation that far exceeds a single frame. Living in southern Spain, I am constantly hit by such sensory impulses. Of course there are far too many to list, so I am limiting myself to a handful of choices for each of the senses. So without further ado, here are some of the sights, sounds, smells, tastes and touches that to me are the essence of Andalucía.

Visual impressions Amapolas: The first time we visited Andalucía we drove into the village of Nigüelas to have lunch. When a flock of sheep crossing the road forced us to stop, we saw this apparition across the way. Had Monet been with us in the car, he would have leapt out and insisted on painting it. This field has become our benchmark for flowering fields, and so far we have not found its equal.

La Mezquita de Córdoba: Córdoba’s famous mosque is in my view one of the remaining Seven Wonders of the World. It doesn’t matter how many photos or documentaries you have watched about it – when you are actually there and see it ‘live’, it is simply out of this world. I admit that there are multitudes of other astonishing places here, but when it comes to architectural structures, La Mezquita is beyond any other.

Colores: When I visualize Andalucía, I see warm and vibrant colours, like this classic buildings in the historic quarter of Málaga.

Auditory impressions The sounds of rural Andalucía are completely different to those of urban centres. Instead of a steady hum of traffic interrupted by sirens, our ears are filled with braying sheep and prattling neighbours. These are some of my favourite audio impressions from Andalucía.

Impromptu performances: Andalusians are a spontaneous lot. On any social occasion our friends will leap to their feet and start belting out a song or dancing la Sevillana without any prompting.

Bells around the clock: When we lived in Vancouver we never heard church bells, which were possibly outlawed due to overly political correctness. Though neither of us are Catholics, I love to hear the bells morning, noon and night, as a reminder of the ceaseless passing of time. I learned as late as yesterday that the bells of la iglesia de Santa María la Mayor were pulled by human hands up to a decade ago. There are also different sounds for different type of masses, from festive storm bells to the sombre tolling of luto or funeral bells.

Baaas and Mouuus: Animals clucking and neighing like the song goes are no longer part of most people’s daily soundscape. For this reason, it is especially enjoyable to wake up hearing the braying sheep up the hill or a wailing donkey in the valley beneath us.

102 102

Olfactory impressions As for the nose, what a treat! Andalucía simply exudes olfactory pleasures (and a few less desirable odours…)

Azar Heaven: While Southern Spain blesses us with fragrant blooms, none has a more divine perfume than the azar, or the orange blossom. To experience the orange trees at their peak, head to the Lecrin valley in mid May and you will think that you have gone to Nirvana.

Holy incense: Ever since our first Easter in Spain, my nostrils remember with fondness the fragrant incense of Semana Santa. The scent lingers in the air, seeping out from stores, chapels and homes. I have thought about stealing one of the incense dispensers they use in their mass, but so far I have managed to hold back. The smell of hundreds of candles lighting up a dark church interior combined with the incense feels mysterious, timeless and even, for a quasi-heathen like myself, holy.

Wild herbs: As hikers in Andalucía, we always come across herbs growing in the wild. Cultivated herbs can certainly smell nice, but there is nothing lovelier than sticking your nose into a wild growing thyme, a fragrant wild lavender or a shrub of wild rosemary.

Tactile impressions Of all the senses, touch is probably the one we are the least aware of and truly ‘in touch with’. Most of us are too busy being bombarded by visual and auditory stimuli to feel the subtler sensations under our fingertips. So, what are some of Andalucía’s most profound tactile impressions?

Touching Wood: “Touch wood” we say when we wish something to happen or hope that something won’t happen. Wood therefore, somehow equates to safety. This feels particularly true by the ancient Castaño Santo, a venerable old chestnut tree that grows on the old walking trail between Ronda and San Pedro. How could you not want to hug this friendly giant?

Touching history: Ronda is rock. We live on a rock split by a deep gorge. The landscape is peppered with rocks and everywhere we look we see the rocky Serranía de Ronda mountain chain. These rocks built the bridges over our Tajo, the walls that protected our town and the houses that gave people and animals shelter. The rocks came long before us and will outlive us into oblivion. Touching Andalusian rock is therefore touching a piece of timeless history.

103

Gustatory impressions Oh, decisions, decisions. Andalucía is a tasters’ paradise, particularly since everything comes in bite-sized tapa format. Nearly every fruit and vegetable under the sun can grow in southern Spain, while you can find local organic olive oil, delicious sheep milk cheese, free range eggs and superb tinto wine from the area, if not from your own neighbourhood. Difficult as it is to narrow down the top taste choices, here they are:

Café con leche: I have a weakness. I never used to like coffee in Canada – usually meaning Starbucks’ milky brown substance served giant environmentally devastating paper cups. Since moving to Spain however, I have become hooked. Once in Malaga, sitting with my far too healthy herbal brew, I observed my husband getting a glass of dark-as-my-soul espresso, into which the waiter splashed some milk. The latter can make up any one of ten colour variations, as here in the Province of Málaga we do not measure shades of grey. We like our shades java brown.

Tomates aliñados: For all the more elaborate dishes on the menu, I like the basics. When the enormous black tomatoes and the Corazon de Toro tomatoes are in season, nothing beats Tomates aliñados – tomatoes simply dressed with course salt and olive oil. Some will add chopped garlic or a pinch of dried herbs, but when it comes to this dish I am a purist.

From the sea: Having both the Mediterranean and Atlantic Ocean close at hand, we are spoilt for choice when it comes to fresh seafood, (while there is still life in the oceans…) If you haven’t tried it yet, order the locals’ favourite, a skewer of sardines cooked over flames at a beach Chiringuito. This fabulous summer treat should ideally be accompanied by a bit of an ocean breeze and the smell of a tarred pier.

Your favourite sensations are probably completely different from mine, as we all hear and smell things differently. The importance is not what we sense, but that we sense at all.

104 104

I hope that reading this will inspire you to celebrate the sensational sights, sounds, smells, tastes and touches wherever you may be.

COSTA CUISINE

magicalgarlic

S Bettina, our resident foodie, offers her insider knowledge on plant based cuisine and takes us on a culinary journey as she travels the world in search of gastronomic inspiration

pain is the land of sun but also of garlic! That magical bulb of goodness that elevates every dish and makes kitchens smell like heaven!

Garlic - a foodie favourite and aromatic vegetable that can also improve immunity. We officially have an excuse to eat nothing but garlic bread as a way to protect ourselves from that virus. Garlic flavoured anything is an all time foodie favourite. Type garlic bread into Instagram and you’ll be inundated with pictures of golden, crispy, cheesy garlic bread #foodporn alert. But garlic isn’t just a delicious flavouring, it’s also pretty good at improving our immunity – which at the moment is pretty important, wouldn’t you agree?

Instead add some crushed up pieces of garlic to your food and you’re good to go. Or make your own garlic bread, a simple and scrummy preventative measure which your immune system will thank you for. Plus you are in Spain the land of yummy garlic! l

Wh at i s gar li c ?

We are all aware that social distancing, frequent hand washing and wearing a face covering are all ways we can help protect ourselves from contracting Covid-19.

Garlic, also known as Allium Sativum, is part of the onion family which includes chives, shallots, leeks and scallions. The sections of garlic (called the cloves), are peeled, and either cut or crushed giving raw garlic that pungent odour.

But thinking long term, boosting our immunity should be one of our priorities as it can help to prevent and reverse chronic diseases.

So what causes that smell you ask? Well apparently it’s due to the compound called sulfur which also possesses anticancer properties.

One natural remedy that has been said to boost our immunity is through the small but powerful vegetable, the garlic bulb. Despite it being a kitchen staple for a majority of culinary cuisines, it works wonders for your immune system too. Yes, it can leave you with a deadly stench in your mouth (not pleasant, I know) but the benefits are far greater and quite frankly worth the smelly breath.

106

And better yet, for those of you who aren’t exactly garlic lovers, we’re not saying to force an entire garlic clove into your mouth.

l

H OW T O C H O O S E T H E B E S T O N E S?

Look for those that are plump and have tight skin, rather than those that look messy with skin already peeling. It’s best to buy them fresh and consume within a week to get most of the benefits this beautiful bulb has to offer, but you can also store them for a couple of months in a cool dry place away from sunlight but with a good supply of ventilation.

COSTA CUISINE

Here is my all time favourite recipe with garlic:

Spicy red lentil and quinoa pot -

From my new book 7 Day Vegan Challenge (available to buy on Amazon US and UK), it combines budget friendly ingredients with big flavours so you won’t feel left out. This recipe is a protein boost in the form of a deliciously quick, one-pot fix. Easy to make and even easier to eat!

Ingredients:

Serves 2

olive oil, for frying ½ onion, sliced

2 garlic cloves, sliced 2 carrots, diced 1 tablespoon ground cumin ½ teaspoon cayenne 1 tablespoon turmeric 1 large handful of chopped cavolo nero or kale 80 g (3 oz/1/3 cup) red lentils 100 g (3. oz/. cup) dry quinoa 400 g (14 oz) passata (sieved tomatoes) or tinned chopped tomatoes salt freshly cracked black pepper dollop of coconut yoghurt, to serve Boosters: black sesame seeds hemp hearts

Method:

1. 2. 3.

Heat a little olive oil in a large frying pan (skillet) and fry the onion, garlic, carrot and spices for 5 minutes until the onion is brown and the carrot soft. Add the chopped cavolo nero, the red lentils and quinoa, cover with the passata and bring to a simmer.

Season with salt and pepper to taste and leave to simmer under a lid for about 10–15 minutes until the quinoa and lentils are tender.

TIP: Serve with a dollop of yoghurt to take the edge off the spice.
