t’s October, autumn is here but we are busier than ever – just check out what we have lined up for you this month!
Our cover girl, Jennifer Lopez, is still going strong after several decades in showbiz. We were all shocked when we realised that J.Lo is now 45 years old, but reaching middle-age seems to have had no effect on her energy or her ambition. After wowing the crowds at this year’s World Cup Opening Ceremony she released her 10th album, A.K.A which proves that she hasn’t lost any of her appeal and looks set to be yet another bestseller. After another summer in which record numbers of tourists visited the Coast and boosted the local economy no end, it’s all go for some really great enterprises. Obviously Marbella attracts some very discerning holidaymakers, who like to enjoy the finer things in life while they are experiencing the city’s famous micro-climate. Firstly, we were delighted to note that two of our friends currently occupy the top two places out of 884 restaurants in Marbella: hearty congratulations, Paella’s y más and Don Quijote, that is quite an achievement! We have already enjoyed some fabulous meals in these two restaurants and completely agree with the reviewers who have praised these two amazing establishments to the sky – it’s only what they deserve. Our Features Editor, Amber O’Shaughnessy, visited the luxurious new Glow Beauty centre recently and swears that it’s going to be the future of beauty treatments on the Costa del Sol. Amber was very impressed (you can read her report on page 36) and reveals that the
16
emphasis is very much on providing the latest and best treatments in five-star surroundings. Its Puerto Banús location means that it is perfectly placed to attract locals and visitors alike. Book an appointment as soon as you can, is our advice – this place will be packed when the end of year party season kicks off not too far in the future. What else have we being enjoying lately? Well, we loved El Jardín de Lutz at Finca Cortesin and also thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Freudenhaus, a funky new cocktail bar that offers some great new mixes, such as Jasmine Mojito and Vanilla Pisco Sour. If you’re a party animal please note that there is a DJ on Friday and Saturday nights, so this is a great place to spend the night. The girls in the office have all been talking about the great offers that are available from the Málaga Fashion Outlet; I must confess that high fashion isn’t really my thing (as anyone who knows me will acknowledge!) but you can’t argue with the labels stocked at this great new outlet. If the pictures in Ian Kuah’s review of the new Audi TT look a little familiar it is because the pictures were taken locally – yes, that really is La Concha you can see in the background on pages 86 and 87. It seems that everyone wants to be in this part of Spain and who can blame them; where else in the world can you enjoy the great outdoors practically all the year round? Till next time… Andy Clark

It’s a new musical era for J.Lo who is looking as bootylicious as ever
jLove By Amber O’Shaughnessy
I
can think of only a handful of singers who have achieved it and Jennifer Lopez, aka J.Lo, is most certainly one of the few. I am, of course, referring to that nigh on impossible feat of staying sufficiently current and fresh to appeal to the masses for several decades or more. I’d say out of the few pop stars who have enjoyed considerable music longevity, the majority have at least gone slightly off the boil: a stint in rehab, a dodgy facelift or - the most unspeakable of all - paying some hip R&B act to feature in one of their songs in the vain attempt they appear ‘cool’ to their fans. Safe to say ‘Jenny from the block’ has refrained from all of the above and thank goodness she has. Her recent performance at the World Cup Opening Ceremony was proof in itself. J.Lo exuded sassiness and charisma throughout the show and as she sang those famed words “We are one”, she commanded every person’s heart and attention in that Sao Paolo stadium. Aside from the sense of showmanship she brought to the performance, it seems to me that the 45-year-old singer was the perfect choice for such a momentous occasion. With Puerto Rican parents, but having grown up in The Bronx in New York City, Lopez has universal appeal. She crosses linguistic and economic boundaries, often singing in two languages and acknowledging her own, far from affluent upbringing in the lyrics she pens. ‘Jenny from the Block’ (2002) features the lyrics, “Don’t be fooled by the rocks that I got / I’m Still, I’m Still Jenny from the Block / Used to have a little now I have a lot / No matter where I go I know where I came from.” Although shunned by certain critics who called the song ‘silly’ and
20
‘hypocritical’, the track tells the classic rags to riches story, which Lopez experienced first hand and speaks to thousands of people world over. Her Puerto Rican parents told the young Jennifer that, as a Hispanic living in the US, pursuing the dream of becoming a movie star was a “really stupid idea” and that “no Latinos did that”. Some ten years later, after moving out from her childhood home to pursue her dream without the support of her family, Lopez became the first Latina
AMAs, three ASCAP Pop Music Awards, eight Billboard Latin Music Awards, three Billboard Music Awards, and two VMAs. Lopez is also a two-time Grammy nominee.
“Music has always been my first love… As a girl who grew up in the Bronx, I listened to everything”
Hot on the heels of her World Cup performance, J.Lo is back with another album, her 10th in fact, and is sounding as current as ever. “First Love” an uptempo song produced by Max Martin, is part of the album entitled A.K.A. Speaking about the track, Lopez said; “Music has always been my first love… As a girl who grew up in the Bronx, I listened to everything.” In my career I have always made music that is a reflection of me… and where I am in my life... I do what I feel…and do things that feel authentic to me. I am a lot of different things and I do a lot of different things. I love Hip Hop, Pop, Dance Music and R&B. And on this, my 10th album release, I have created a collection of songs that make me feel good and make me feel happy.”
actress to earn over $1 million for a leading role in the film Out of Sight. In the song ‘Jenny from the Block’, J.LO makes no secret of the fact that those years on her own were a struggle, emotionally and financially, yet she eventually reaped the rewards as a result of this unwavering ambition. Any song that confronts themes such as the benefits of perseverance and a strong work ethic rather than a teenage kiss or crazy party is applauded in my book. The singing sensation went on from her early acting days to forge a highly successful career in music. Since Lopez’s first album On the 6 debuted in 1999 she has been transforming the global music scene and has sold over 75 million records worldwide. She has had 16 Top 10 hit songs and three Number One albums. Her musical achievements include winning three
In 2001 Jennifer Lopez made history by being the first artist to have a Number One movie and Number One album simultaneously. “The Wedding Planner” was the nation’s top grossing film while her second album J.Lo was Number One on the Billboard Top 200 chart.

Reece Shearsmith stars in this chilling four-part series about the work of a missing persons field unit. Shearsmith was last on our screens in The Widower, where he was cast as a manipulative serial killer so it is interesting and testament to his acting abilities to see him in a totally different part. In the role of DS Stone, Shearsmith is the socially awkward detective is obsessed with deciphering codes and following patterns of behaviour; he works with his partner Ruth Hattersley (Alex Kingston) to track down serial killers who prey on impressionable and vulnerable people.

Beautiful Ever After by Katie Piper In this sequel to Piper’s first autobiography, the reader is given an update on the last few years of Katie’s life since she left the safety of her parents’ home. Thirty yearold Katie was the victim of a brutal attack when her ex-boyfriend arranged for an accomplice to throw acid over her face. The attack, which blinded her in one eye, led to Katie receiving a skin graft and reconstruction surgery. Piper decided to share her story in order to increase awareness about burn victims in a Channel 4 documentary called Katie: My Beautiful Face and her autobiography Beautiful. In this second instalment of Katie’s life, we find out how she started dating again, eventually meeting her partner and becoming pregnant with his child. It’s a tale of courage and determination.

Kayne demanding wheelchair users to stand at recent concert
26
It might seem to some people that Kanye West often gets a bit of a hard time from the world’s press, but incidents such as that which occurred last month hardly help the singer. Whilst performing in Sydney, Australia, Kanye demanded that the entire audience stood up. Two individuals, one of whom had a prosthetic leg and the other who was using a wheelchair, were clearly unable to do so. The 37 year-old refused to continue with song ‘The Good Life’ until they were standing, saying, “This is the longest I’ve had to wait to do a song, it’s unbelievable”. Peace prevailed after West sent a bodyguard over to the pair to check they were, in fact, physically unable to follow his request - but what a humiliating episode for the two concert-goers.
The name of Katie Price’s new baby girl Katie Price took six whole weeks to decide on the name of her new baby daughter. She FINALLY revealed her choice last month in an interview with OK! Magazine. Her newborn is called Bunny! The former glamour model turned businesswoman is now mother to five children, including Junior and Princess Tiaamii. Katie Hopkins, who has previously spoken out about less conventional first names, wasted no time in voicing her opinion about Price’s choice. The critical television personality tweeted, “Bunny? BUNNY?! Makes sense I guess, given your dad was going at it like a rabbit with all of mums mates”. Irrespective of your opinion on the name, Katie Price has done it again – got everyone talking about her, that is!

Our Instagram Picks of the Month Celebrities baffle and amaze us with the egotistical posts to their Instagram accounts. Here is our pick of the most cringeworthy from the past month
Miley Cyrus dancing around with a prosthetic bottom attached to her behind was a particular highlight. The 21 year-old seemed to be enjoying a lot of use from her new found prop as she posted the videos to her Instagram just minutes before heading on-stage in front of thousands in Monterrey, Mexico as part of her Bangerz tour. Paris Hilton’s Instagram account has been deluged by countless photos of her newly purchased Pomeranian pup. The photograph captions have provided endless laughs for us here at SOCIETY; some of our favourites include ‘my precious lil angel baby’ and ‘my little prince’. Hmm.
Celebrities love posting smug holiday pics and this month Kelly Brook out-performed the competition. She posted this breast selfie while holidaying in Mykonos with fiancé David McIntosh, which showed off the former glamour model’s curvy assets.
Ah, Lady Gaga never disappoints with her bizarre and eccentric choice of outfits. In typical outlandish style, the 28 yearold pop star arrived for a gig in Athens, Greece last month wearing a skimpy shell bra and racy thong. She seems to have taken inspiration from the famous Botocelli painting, The Birth of Venus, for this particular look. Whatever next?

Línea Directa WHAT TO DO IF YOU’VE BEEN BURGLED STATISTICS IN SPAIN Crime rates in Spain remain among the lowest in the EU according to the latest Interior Ministry crime report. However, since the economic crisis began in 2008, there has been a steep increase in domestic burglaries and theft as a result. In 2012 the number of burglaries in homes rose by 25.4%. The message to expat residents is not to panic. There are some simple precautions to take, as you would back in the UK, such as fitting security grills, installing exterior lights and alarms, being careful about what content is posted on social networks, especially anything to do with trips and holidays away from home. It also helps to take out a quality home insurance policy that will cover your home and its contents should any unfortunate incident occur.
Then secure your home to avoid further damage, board up any broken windows, make a list of damaged or missing belongings, detail the damage to your home resulting from the burglary, taking photographs of damaged windows or door.
PEACE-OF-MIND WITH Línea Directa We understand that your peaceof-mind is important, especially in your home. Our claims department will take a full statement of the circumstances of the incident. We will check the insurance coverage with you explaining all the procedures. If emergency repairs are required from locksmiths to glaziers, we will help you swiftly handle your claim and get things back to normal as soon as possible. Fortunately, incidents of theft in Spain are relatively small compared to other EU countries, however should you be burgled, your homeowner’s insurance policy will cover the loss or destruction of personal property if it’s stolen from your home.
WHEN YOU DISCOVER YOU’VE BEEN BURGLED As soon as you discover you’ve been burgled, whether it’s a break-in or theft at your home, first call the police. Don’t touch anything until they arrive. A police report will be needed to process your claim.

HOW SAFE IS YOUR PENSION?
“The pension funding gap of Britain’s top companies has widened in the past year despite billions of pounds of corporate cash being injected into retirement schemes, a report said on Tuesday.” “Pension consultants LCP said pension scheme deficits for companies in the UK’s FTSE 100 blue chip stock index grew to £43 billion pounds at June 30 compared with £42 billion a year before, as fund assets didn’t generate enough cash to cover obligations.” The problem is not small, given FTSE 100 member companies remain responsible for pension liabilities worth nearly 0.5 trillion pounds” - (Reuters) –Sept 2013
T
he UK government are looking to restrict the transfer of UK public sector Defined Benefit (DB) schemes as early as September this year or possibly from April next year. There is also a possibility that private DB schemes will follow. With current major deficits in DB pensions in the UK, the immediate danger of this restriction is the solvency of such schemes. If a scheme or company where to go bust and therefore not be able to meet previous commitments or obligations to former employees, scheme members could lose a significant amount of their requirement income. Over the last 30 years, the pension deficit in the UK has reached levels of over £220 Billion pounds!
* One in three company DB schemes have been scrapped in the last decade. * An astonishing 58,000 company schemes have been wound up, according to the Occupational Pensions Regulatory Authority (OPRA). * 110,000 schemes still exist - but OPRA believes a further 30,000 are under threat as the funding crisis grows. * The scheme trustees have the power to vary an actual members benefits if it’s in the best interests of the scheme in general. * Some companies have gone bust taking their schemes down with them (MFI & Woolworths in the UK) therefore, a guaranteed income is only guaranteed if the company has the finances to do so and is still trading/solvent.
* The UK does have a Pension Protection Fund which would generally pay up to 90% of the benefits that a scheme member may have received from their ‘bust’ scheme but this is capped at around £32,000 a year. * Over 657 schemes have been transferred to the PPF since it was introduced * The PPF does not guarantee full inflation linked increases * The PPF is unlikely to provide the same level of PCLS * Some questions have been raised as to the long term existence of the PPF With QROPS, the ability to not only realise a lump sum transfer amount and also the ability to control and manage assets can be critical to ensuring future financial security. Transferring out sooner rather than later ensures that you have a pension pot specifically ring fenced. As a member of a Defined Benefit (DB) scheme, you should always think carefully as to whether transfer to a QROPS is viable. At GWM we produce a complete report for each and every client. In each of these reports, we utilise the services of an independent pension technician to provide a completely autonomous and impartial opinion. We then produce an analysis which clearly shows what your future pension income could be with a QROPS scheme compared to a DB scheme based on the likely increase in returns and improved GAD rates etc.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR
Glowing Beauty By Amber O’Shaughnessy Photos by Julia Roder
Your journey to rediscovering your feel-good factor begins in the heart of Puerto Banús, in the prestigious Playas del Duque. In a staggering 750 metres of space, Glow Beauty is the Coast’s spectacular new beauty centre. This one-of-a-kind sanctuary offers a stylish ambience in which you can pamper and preen yourself. High vaulted ceilings and a slick colour scheme of cream and black makes this an exclusive area dedicated to relaxation, beauty, harmony and well-being.

low Beauty not only takes your breath away with its appearance (every client is welcomed at a solid marble reception desk, which initiates every experience with a special something), but the centre is fitted with state-of-the-art technology and equipment that you are unlikely to find elsewhere in the region. Glow has installed the very latest facilities to accommodate the newest trends in facial and body treatments. One such treatment is Virtual Mesotherapy, which does not require the use of needles. The new form of this very popular therapy involves the use of laser and ultraviolet lighting equipment to achieve the
same results. Needless to say, Glow is equipped with the tools to carry out this revolutionary new method and boasts a team of professionals specially trained in the procedure. Added to this, Glow Beauty also stocks the most recent beauty products on the market. Nowhere else can you purchase brands such as skincare range, Dermalogica. It is almost unbelievable that, before Glow, the women of Marbella had to purchase this brand online and have it shipped into Spain. Thankfully all that is in the past now Glow Beauty is with us. Glow should be congratulated on its fantastic team; boasting a vast amount

A virtual walking tour of the beauty centre will lead you into a large open space containing the Manicure and Pedicure area on the left, offering Shellac, Vinylux, Gel and Artistic treatments for your fingers and toes. Opposite this is the place in which all of the hair magic takes place. Hair therapies at Glow include Nutritional Treatments (Capillary Botox, BB Cream and remedies for hair loss), French Straightening and special hair-styling for that one off occasion. But that is not all - walk through the double doors at the back of the salon

and you enter a hidden sanctuary dedicated to your every need. Spacious treatment rooms, where the renowned Glow facials are carried out, line the long corridor. Some of those available include Sublime Treatment, Virtual (needle free) Mesotherapy, Photocare and Dermatology Facials. Not forgetting, of course, the decadent Gold Facial, which is also on offer. This new type of facial is fit for a queen, as your beauty technician will apply Oligo-Cellular Gold to your face, which creates a radiant, natural glow how fitting. Body Treatments include LPG, Presotherapy, Slim Sculpt, Massages and Sub-aquatic Massage. Again, Glow Beauty keeps bang up to date with the hottest new trends in the ever-changing world of health and beauty. The Arab Hammam provides clients with a unique retreat to a far off land with its Eastern ambience and appearance. The bronzed tiles bounce light onto the ceiling of the room, creating a magical place for you to relax and completely unwind. The five different rituals deliver freshness and clarity to your skin, allowing smoothness and glow to return, especially if the heat of the summer months has taken its toll on your complexion. Finally, who could forget the Dora Make-Up Academy, which is soon to be launching at Glow Beauty? This will be THE place for anyone seriously wanting to pursue a career as a make-up artist, headed by the inimitable Dora, who has worked for some of the world’s leading cosmetics brands including Chanel, Dior, YSL and EstÊe Lauder. FEEL-GOOD FACTOR
at the
MIND, BODY & SPIRIT
festival
T
he H10 Andalucia Plaza Hotel plays host to many events throughout the year. The Mind, Body & Spirit Festival is, however, by far our favourite. The Festival inspires and amazes in equal measure, delighting enthusiasts and surprising the cynics. We snatched a bit of time with the indefatigable Jacinta Anne Hannon who has organised the Mind, Body & Spirit Festival for many years, to find out more about this unique event. Where did the idea for the Mind, Body & Spirit Festival come from originally? I suppose I have always enjoyed learning about the human condition – the way we think, interact and function within society. When I was younger my favourite subjects at school were Biology, Philosophy and Religion, but I chose to continue to delve deeper into these subject areas following my years in education. The more aware and informed I became, the keener I was to share this knowledge and present it to the public, for everyone to experience. For how many years has the festival been running, and how is this year’s show different? This is the 11th year of the festival at the H10 Andalucia Plaza Hotel. We always like to invite old favourites back as well as a large number of new participants. It keeps it varied, interesting and exciting for the public. How do you decide which specialists/ professionals you want as exhibitors at the show? I like to have a wide choice of mind, body and soul therapists - mediums, palmists and psychics as well as healing massage reflexologists for the body. Hypnosis, life coaching and personal empowerment for the mind experts are also on hand to offer support, advice and tips. I use the law of attraction to attract the best people in the industry to participate in the Festival. What can a person expect from their visit to the Mind, Body & Spirit Festival? Following on from a visit to the Festival, people tell me they experience peace of mind, become more open to trusting their intuition and begin to follow their heart’s desire rather than listening to their ego. Others have told me they have a better, more positive outlook on life as a result of the festival, as well as an
awakening to the fact that we are souls, engaging in a human experience. Power is the knowledge that we have choices and can create our ideal life now; we just need to believe. What would you say to the cynics out there who perhaps see life in a more literal/ factual way? The best advice I can give is to suggest you come along to the festival; you will leave with a very different outlook. Expect to receive tips on how to improve your health, wealth and happiness, discover new technologies, calm your mind and learn how to live a more peaceful and rewarding life. Do you have any advice for our readers so that they are not disappointed when they cannot do/see everything at the show? Yes, come early and get your ticket and programme at the entrance. Also, be sure to book an appointment with the person you feel you are attracted to. With your ticket you can go in and out of the festival throughout the day. What tends to be the most popular stand at the festival?
There is something that appeals to everyone, whether it’s a reading to pamper your soul, a massage to revitalize your body or life coaching to let go of limiting beliefs and stimulate your mind. Hypnosis is always very popular for those who need help letting go of fears, phobias and habits that no longer serve you. The naming of the event as a ‘festival’ suggests a more interactive experience for visitors; what else is on offer aside from the stands? Alongside over 50 stands showing jewellery, crystals and health and beauty products, visitors can experience alkaline antioxidant water, enjoy healthy food, cakes and much more. Sum up the best part of the Mind, Body & Spirit Festival in three words. Exciting, inspiring experiences. Little more needs to be said other than go see it and believe it for yourself at 2014’s Mind, Body & Spirit Festival on 25th and 26th October at the H10 Andalucia Plaza Hotel. mindbodyspiritmarbella.com

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR
Beauty Editor Liza gives readers a monthly update on all things gorgeous, keeping you up to date with the latest trends and best beauty bits for your makeup bag!
IT ALL STARTS WITH A GOOD
Foundation
Choosing the right foundation for your skin can be a daunting task. it is important to take a few points into consideration when out shopping for your next purchase. A great foundation will even out your skin tone and give you the appearance of flawless skin, but you have to do it properly, otherwise you run the risk of looking like a clown. Alongside choosing the right shade and coverage for you, blending is key for any flawless effect.
GOOD FOUNDATION WILL DISAPPEAR ON YOUR FACE If there is anything I would want you to remember from this article, it’s this: foundation or tinted moisturiser should disappear on your skin and look as if you aren’t wearing any make up at all. Foundation is meant to give an even coverage and lightly cover up any redness or unevenness without looking obvious. It should not settle into fine lines or wrinkles or highlight large pores.
46
WHAT’S THE RIGHT FOUNDATION FOR YOUR SKIN?
DO YOU WANT LIGHT, MEDIUM OR HEAVY COVERAGE?
When choosing a foundation it’s best to know your skin type. Foundations are formulated for oily, dry, mature, normal and sensitive skin. Keep in mind that most women’s skin types change with the weather. In winter, your skin might be dry, while in summer it becomes oily. Most commonly, skin type is ‘combination’, which means a person has an oily T-zone but drier skin everywhere else on the face. For combination skin, determine if you’re more oily or dry and go from there. Cream-to-powder bases work great for combination skin, whilst mineral foundations work well on all skin types, especially sensitive. If you suffer from oily skin, look for words like “oil-free,” “oil-control” or “mattifying” on the bottle. Ladies who suffer from dry skin should look out for moisturising foundations with “hydrating” or “moisture-rich” wording on the bottle. Foundations containing glycerin glide on easily and will help keep the skin look fresh and dewy. Try to avoid powdered foundation.
One of the most important factors to consider before purchasing a foundation and ultimately finding the one that works best for you is to figure out the coverage you want from your foundation. This may be seasonal - you may choose a lighter coverage in summer (maybe consider a tinted moisturiser/liquid foundation) and in the winter opt for a heavier, creamier coverage. The shade of the foundation will change too; a light to medium foundation is great during the day and doesn’t feel heavy on the face. For a fuller coverage go for a cream based product, this will help cover up more of your skin, creating a more flawless finish to your makeup.
FEEL-GOOD FACTOR
ESTEE LAUDER - Double Wear This product is your answer to stay-in-place foundation all day and into the night. It has super oil controlling elements that prevent it from smudging or melting from summer heat and humidity. Double Wear is extremely lightweight with a medium coverage and leaves a natural sheer finish.
MAKEUP FOREVER Hd An oil-free liquid foundation that covers skin imperfections flawlessly while remaining invisible. This foundation creates a softfocus effect, and is designed to meet the needs of those who prefer a medium-to-fullcoverage. It leaves your complexion with a flawless finish and is fabulous for a photo finish look - it can withstand bright or harsh lighting.
FIND YOUR
Perfect MATCH!
If you’re seeking glowing, healthy skin (and who isn’t?) your diet plays a major role. Eating good fats makes a huge difference to the appearance of your skin. There are, however, a number of foundations on the market that further help you achieve that flawless foundation finish.
GIORGIO ARMARNI Maestro This has become a personal favourite of mine. It works as a protective foundation that provides a natural look but also delivers a good coverage. The texture of your skin transforms to a velvety smooth finish. It is ideal for all ages and skin types.
MAC - Face and Body What I love most about Face and Body is the extremely light coverage it gives, although this can be built up until you reach your desired look. It is the perfect answer for ladies who want a natural, light, day look - the skinperfecting formula gives light yet poreless coverage, with a ‘barely there’ feeling. I would recommend using only a little of this product, as it goes a long way, spreading and blending well.
L’OREAL - True Match In terms of finding the right shade for you, L’Oreal is the best! It has over 20 shades with warm, cool and neutral tones. This foundation has a silky matt texture and luminous finish. It’s very similar to Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk in this respect, as it feels very pleasant on the skin. It’s fantastic for everyday use and is long lasting.

This month Society Marbella interviews fashionista Marbeth Gray, the Director of Simply Love Designer, a shopping destination for designer goods without the designer price tag, as safe and satisfying as buying new.
I have always loved... fashion
and have been lucky enough to attend the London and Paris fashion weeks on many occasions. It is an experience not be missed and is probably where my love of designer accessories stemmed from. Although my passion lies in the fashion industry, I’m actually from a legal background and worked in the City of London for many years.
I decided to launch Simply Love Designer because...
I had an accident a few years ago and I decided to take life a bit easier. I wanted to do something that I was very knowledgeable about and that I would really enjoy. I have a lot of friends working in the world of fashion and, of course, living in London means designer labels and fashion are hard to avoid. I don’t think I have ever met a woman who doesn’t love handbags. The great thing about a handbag is that it doesn’t matter if you put on or lose weight, a handbag will still always look fabulous on you. That’s why we don’t mind spending a little extra on them. I originally started Simply Love Designer in London and, due to its success, I then expanded to my homeland, Ireland.
I love Marbella and... I spend a large amount of time here. After seeing a gap in the market, I decided to launch Simply Love Designer here. Marbella is a very glamorous, cosmopolitan place where people appreciate fashion so I knew there would be an interest in what I had to offer. My company is really split between London and Marbella, as the main part of the company is still in London. I am constantly travelling between the two; I regularly hold events in London as I have a large client base there. Simply Love Designer offers... a wide range of services.
You can purchase pre-loved designer hand bags and accessories in perfect condition from leading brands such as Louis Vuitton, Hermes, Prada, Gucci, Jimmy Choo, Mulberry etc. We also sell designer items for clients who have fallen out of love with their accessories. We, of course, offer total discretion at all times. With many years of experience in this industry, I believe we are perfectly placed to give
58
our customers a real alternative to buying new and to offer the best prices to clients selling their items.
I launched my Wish List service so... that clients could give
me their details for our database which lists the designer items they would love to own - this is what I call our Wish List. We then use our worldwide contacts to source these items for the client. When a desired item comes in, we contact the client and give them first refusal.
I will be organising...
regular events where my clients will be invited to see all the current stock,
Speedy 30 Louis Vuitton r Bandolee Price €490 RRP €790 Our
Louis Vuitton Gamble Silver Light from the Seasonable collection. Bracelet and Earrings with LV engraved on each cube and Swarovski crystal stones. RRP €580 Our Price €295
discuss wish list items and enjoy an evening with like minded fashionistas. I will be linking the events to charities close to my heart and a donation will go to one of them at each event.
We also offer...
quite a large selection of designer accessories. These include jewellery, wallets, purses, stoles, belts, scarves, bag charms, limited edition items etc. all top quality and in pristine condition. SLD isn’t just for the ladies, we have a large stock of items for our male clients as well.
My favourite designer items are... a Chanel 2.5 I got for
my 30th birthday, my lovely Louis Vuitton Graffiti stole and my Vuitton agenda which I have had for years and still use every day - I could go on and on!
Louis Vuitton limited edition hand bag from the Catwalk colle ction RRP €2500 Our Price €1295
In my spare time... I enjoy having quiet dinners with friends and love walking with my dogs. I also like to travel. What’s next for Simply Love Designer?... I am planning
something special at Christmas and there will be a lot of special things happening in the near future. I have been surprised at how well Simply Love Designer has been received already so hopefully next year will see us going from strength to strength. simplylovedesigner.com

Our in-depth motoring review
The third generation TT may look familiar, but really is an all-new car

88
A
TORQUE TALK
t first glance, the third generation Audi TT looks very much like the last one, itself a sharpened up version of the more rounded original. That similarity is quite intentional, as the unique TT shape has become as iconic amongst its devoted followers as the 911 is to Porsche fanatics.
less stressful. By detecting the lights of vehicles in front and behind as well as the ambient light in urban areas, the computer-controlled camera and sensor system automatically adapts its own lights to the environment. This enables the system to throw maximum illumination on the road whilst avoiding dazzling other road users.
To date, over 500,000 TTs have been sold across the first two generations, and that is a lot of cars for such a highly focused product. The UK is the largest TT market, followed by Germany, and then China.
With more angular taillights, the revised rear is less rounded than before, and has a pronounced lip at its end. An electronically controlled rear spoiler deploys over 120km/h to reduce down force over the rear axle and enhance stability.
Under its familiar but crisper looking bodyshell, the new TT is as different from its predecessor as chalk and cheese. Lighter and more powerful, it is endowed with cutting edge technologies that are a first for a car in this 2+2 Coupe class. The most obvious of these sits right in front of the driver in the larger and more sophisticated feeling cabin. Dubbed Virtual Cockpit, the 12.3inch LCD digital display can be switched between the classic large speedometer and rev counter look, and infotainment. The latter highlights functions like the highly detailed navigation map of the optional MMI Navigation plus system, or media, simultaneously shrinking the speedo and rev counter to the lower extremes of the display. Powered by Nvidia’s new Tegra 3 graphics card, the first quadcore processor for mobile devices, and capable of over eight billion computing operations per second, the screen renderings are state-of-theart in this application. It was certainly fascinating to see the real-time Google earth map of our location when we were experimenting with the system. Audi pioneered the original userfriendly MMI touch controller. With the addition of the latest voice control technology, the TT driver now has more than one way to intuitively control the various functions on offer. The more aggressive ‘face’ of the new TT is more angular, its most distinctive feature being its large sixcorner grille. You can always pick out an Audi by the pattern of either its daytime running lights, or at night by its front and rear lights. Now, the optional Matrix LED lights help the new TT stand out even more and make night driving safer and
The naturally aspirated 3.2 litre V6 motor that headed the second-generation TT range has been sacrificed on the altar of greater efficiency. Even the 2.0 TFSI fourcylinder motor has been revised so that it now uses between 10 and 15-percent less fuel for a similar power output. In range topping TTS quattro form, the intercooled turbocharged motor puts out 310hp and 380Nm of torque between 1,800 and 5,700rpm on 1.2 bar of boost. With the S-tronic gearbox, the 0-100km/h sprint takes just 4.6 sec on its way to an electronically limited 250km/h. Fuel consumption is just 6.8-6.9 L/100km with emissions of 157-161 g/km. At the other end of the range, the base front-wheel-drive model shares the VW Golf GTI motor that delivers 227hp, with 370Nm of torque. This fires the TT to 100km/h in a brisk 6.0 sec, and also on to a limited 250km/h top speed. Add quattro and S-tronic and the 0-100km/h sprint improves to 5.3 sec. Due to ever-tightening emission standards and the fact that Audi has extracted 420hp from a beefed up version of the four-cylinder engine for the TT Concept car, it is uncertain if the charismatic, multiple award-winning 340hp 2.5-litre five-cylinder motor will make a comeback in the new TT RS. Diesel engines are no stranger to sleek coupes, including the TT. The latest heavy oil-burning alternative to the powerful four-cylinder TFSI directinjection petrol engines is the commonrail, piezo injector TDI motor with variable vane turbocharger, from the VW Golf GTD. This engine puts out 181hp and 379Nm of torque, and fuel consumption is an impressive 4.19 L/100km, with CO2 emissions of just 110g. While a six-speed manual gearbox is standard, many buyers will choose the six-speed dual-clutch S-tronic, which features Comfort and Sport settings.

TORQUE TALK
“We put a lot of resources into detail work to make many of the components from the basic platform uniquely Audi...”
90
The latter is more responsive and has later shift points, making it the default programme for the enthusiast driver. In addition, the Dynamic Shift programme detects the driver’s style, and adapts its shifting strategy accordingly. Audi pioneered the widespread use of aluminium in production road cars, and the latest TT uses a lot of this light and strong metal, along with hot-formed high-strength steel in a bespoke variation of the VW Group’s MQB platform. The body panels, including the bonnet,
wings, doors, roof and rear hatch, are all made from aluminium. The result is a 23-percent stiffer structure, and a car that is a significant 50kg lighter. This is equivalent to two-thirds the weight of an average-sized person, and the entry-level TT tips the scales at a very modest 1,230kg. While the new TT is 20mm shorter than before at 4,180mm, and 8mm narrower at 1,832mm, its 1,353mm height is unchanged. However, at 2,505mm its
TORQUE TALK
wheelbase is 37mm longer, and within the more compact exterior, luggage capacity has been increased by 13 litres to 305 litres. As before, suspension is by McPherson struts in front, with a four-link independent rear axle. The TT features variable damper control, while Magnetic Ride damping is standard on the TTS. Variable-ratio electro-mechanical power steering allows the options of self-parking and active lane assist. For optimum grip and handling, the quattro AWD system is augmented by a fifth generation Haldex differential with integrated ECU. A new electro-hydraulic clutch actuator features a centrifugal overflow valve design to more precisely distribute power between the front and rear axles. By eliminating the need for an accumulator, solenoid valve and filter, the new system is smoother, faster reacting, and more accurate. The new stability control system applies the inside brakes in extremis, and offers a greater degree of wheel slip in Sport mode. Importantly for the enthusiast track day driver, it can be switched off completely.
Marbella, where the new TT launch took place, has some very nasty speed bumps, but the TTS Quattro test car took these well and never bottomed out. At town speeds, on the optional forged alloy 19-inch wheels, the car exhibited a firm and very well damped ride that nicely rounded off bumps and kept things feeling sporty but still comfortable. Initially, the variable ratio steering, first seen on the S3 last year, feels over sharp at low speeds and big steering angles, as many of such systems do. But as its ratio change is directly related to steering angle, as you go faster and use less steering input it naturally calms down. Certainly, the faster you go the more stable the car feels through your fingertips, which is how it should be. A quick glance in the rear view mirror confirms that the rear spoiler has deployed at 120km/h to remove some of the lift from the rear axle and improve high-speed stability. It retracts when you drop below 70km/h. You can manually activate the spoiler at rest, but for safety reasons, retracting it at speed is not an option.
Some cars handle very well at fast road speed, but lose their composure on a racetrack. The new TT is not one of these, and a rapid climb up the Ronda Road with its many variations of turn radiuses and cambers proved that the new car is very competent in the bends and very rapid between them. Typical of most modern front and four-wheel-drive cars, the TT does not have a lot of old-style steering feel, but importantly for spirited driving, its turnin is perfectly calibrated to the chassis responses. Thus, the TTS feels stable, all of a piece, and inspires confidence when you are pushing hard. Thanks to the combination of the latest Haldex differential and torque vectoring, the old Audi demons of nose-led understeer and inert handling are gone. The new TT turns in crisply and puts its power down perfectly with a near neutral to mild understeering power-on balance through fast turns. Lifting off produces a gentle tightening of your line. The excellent body control I experienced in fast road driving translates perfectly to the racetrack. On the bald limit,
91
TORQUE TALK the combination of good chassis engineering, and state-of-the-art electronics seamlessly blend to produce a car with very good front-end bite going into bends, and a fairly neutral power-on balance so long as you do not turn-in too early and succumb to the laws of physics. It always helps if you trail brake to get settle the nose and help rotate the tail on the way in. You don’t really need to employ this racer’s edge as the torque vectoring does it for you on the limit, but keeping the electronics out of the equation and saving brake pad wear is always the better option. The brakes work very well in fast road work, and even on track, although the track test car’s brakes began to squeal like a pig after a couple of hot laps, but thankfully with other no ill effects. The performance envelope of the quattro chassis is so good that the mere 310hp and 380Nm of torque do not make a dent on the cars stability even if you bring on full throttle just before the apex of a bend. Some of the credit for the cars fine ride, handling and mechanical grip must go to the optional 19-inch TT-specific Hankook Ventus S1 EVO rubber, a first for Audi. Chassis engineer, Ralf Schwart explained that more and more carmakers are developing bespoke rubber in conjunction with tyre manufacturers,
92
and Audi chose Hankook for their 19inch tyre size. This tyre is also available for the standard 18-inch TTS size, which it shares with Continental and Michelin. The base car comes with 17-inch wheels, while the TTS has 18s as standard. Optional sizes are 19 and 20-inch. “The basic MQB chassis is similar to the VW Golf Mk 7, but is shorter,” Ralf explained. “In the search for better handling, we moved the front axle 30mm further forward to put the engine further back in the chassis for better handling and a shorter front overhang. At the rear, the TT axle is 7mm further back as well which gives us a longer wheelbase than the previous model.” “We did a lot of work on the suspension components that would improve the cars dynamics,” Ralf explained. “We looked at the hub carriers, ball joints, steering knuckles and tie-rods, and even developed our own Audi software to work out how to improve these components.” “And of course we have the Audi Drive Select system in the MMI that allows the driver to choose between comfort and sport settings and change the feel of the steering, engine, gearbox and chassis responses.” I was curious about the camber settings and it turns out the front end of the standard TT has minus 44 min
of negative camber, while the Sport suspension version has minus 53 min. The independent rear axle has minus 80 min in both set-ups. “While the car is as wide as before, the lower sills are 10mm narrower, which helps the cars aerodynamic profile,” said Markus Siewert, the Technical Product Manager. “We put a lot of resources into detail work to make many of the components from the basic platform uniquely Audi, so that you can feel the difference when you drive the car. Everything is more precise as you would expect of a sports coupe.” Air management improvements include better cooling for the air-conditioning system and engine intercooler. At 0.29 Cd, the new TT is aerodynamically best in class on the block, and also has a modest 2.09 sq m frontal area. The third generation Audi TT is more evolution than revolution, but with such an off-the-wall design to start with, there is a limit to how much you can update before you mess up a pure design concept. Audi have been wise to heed the old adage, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” So here’s to the TT Roadster that will debut at Paris in October, and the next 500,000 sales! KEEP IT REAL
CHESTERTONS OPENS A NEW OFFICE IN MARBELLA
C
hestertons, one of the world’s oldest and most respected real estate agencies, has opened a new office in Marbella, complementing its worldwide presence. Comprising more than 75 offices, including London, Sydney, Moscow, Singapore, St. Tropez, Barbados and the United Arab Emirates, the Marbella office will be working alongside these offices, representing the Costa del Sol. The new Marbella office has been initiated by the Chestertons group and one of the Costa del Sol’s leading real estate agents, Affinity Property Group. Mia Pearlman, Managing Director of Affinity says, “We are delighted to be
in partnership with one of the most prestigious estate agents in the world. Chestertons shares and understands our values. At a time when the market is moving and new developments are launching it’s important for buyers and investors to know the background of the agent they are working with, making sure they are audited, compliant with legal requirements and a fully registered agency. Chestertons were looking for a very particular partner; they had precise requirements and strong values that need to be maintained and Affinity fitted into the Chestertons mould perfectly. In fact, many clients have already called our offices to list their property with us as they already work with Chestertons in London and the Middle East and want to know they are receiving the same service here on the coast - something which is lacking in this industry.”
100
Chestertons also has a large presence in the UK, owning Humberts and many other smaller networks in London. They have a further 27 offices in London alone, with the head office based in Knightsbridge. With Costa del Sol property prices increasing every quarter, it is an exciting time for buyers and sellers. Marbella is renowned for its cosmopolitan mixture and is now attracting major investors from around the world. It seems the crisis is well and truly over; restaurants are fully booked weeks in advance, queues outside Puerto Banús continue well into the early hours of the morning and the beaches are full of families enjoying themselves. This coast remains the number one destination for holiday makers throughout Europe, and with this new partnership between Chestertons
and Affinity we could see this love of the Costa del Sol stretch even further afield. Affinity Property Group T. 952 812 897 / info@affinityspain.com affinityspain.com / affinityelite.com

HOME COUTURE
THE CRUCIAL INGREDIENT
Coastal Gems By Hayley Reed, Founder of FOC DESIGN
W
e are used to seeing jawdropping interiors in glossy magazines nowadays that cause us to wonder enviously who gets to lounge around and enjoy these incredible creative spaces, but these days commercial projects are where designers tend to push the limits and really go all out. There are so many elements of design and outrageously quirky products that one couldn’t bear to live with day in, day out but, used in the right setting, these creative concepts can become a talking point or a key piece in the design of a commercial setting. Often you hear restaurants or bars referred to by a certain element in the design rather than the name; “that club with the big lit tree” or “that place by the beach with the aviator chairs”. These statement pieces and quirky twists become more than just a design and help to establish premises.
It used to be the case that cutting edge design ideas and off-the-wall concepts were only really seen in influential cities: New York, London and the like became famous for housing bold interior designs and turning run-down or derelict buildings into commercial masterpieces, but they are now fast losing their supremacy. Smaller towns and cities have realised that an essential part of attracting clientele in an increasingly competitive market is to make a premises striking, different and welcoming to their target audience and the Costa del Sol and Gibraltar are no exception. Marbella is an eclectic, cosmopolitan city with a huge tourist industry. Our restaurants, nightclubs and bars are flooded in the summer by holiday makers from all over the world ready to experience the Costa lifestyle and what our commercial premises have to offer. Here we highlight just a few of our favourite design gems.

A great new concept brought to you by the Michelin starred and home-grown chef, Dani Garcia and situated in the plaza at Puente Romano, this restaurant is diverse in both its design and its menu. The eclectic mix of vintage leather armchairs, chesterfield banquettes and exposed bulb lighting, mixed with Christian Lacroix upholstery in pop art colours and Provençale dining chairs makes this venue pure eye candy. The concept is simple – choose what to eat and where to eat! By creating different “zones”, from the Raw and Oyster bar to Grandma’s table, clients can create a bespoke dining experience and enjoy the restaurant time and time again without a feeling of repetition. The elaborate and rich mix keeps the design from dating and allows the place to feel like a timeless creation.

The most famous and popular club of Banús and regularly frequented by celebs, Aqwamist is an explosion of lights and sexy interiors ideal for the sexy nightlife and clientele for whom it caters. The curved booths that surround a rotating central DJ booth complete with changing lights are a mixture of champagne and gloss black and are accompanied by a central, fluted base lit drinks table. The entrance is unmissable - a purple lit stainless steel waterfall wall welcomes the gorgeous and the glamorous. The terrace (La Terraza) is a continuum of the interior, with backlit panel lighting, transparent, throne-like chairs and sofas to rest those weary dancing feet. It’s hard to look in any direction and not see something new, from water bubble walls and the VIP Jacuzzi room to the stunning lit tree in the centre of the VIP area. Aqwamist is best seen sober but enjoyed even more after a few Moet & Chandons.

Freudenhaus, translating directly as ‘house of pleasure’, really does live up to its name, from its decadent, hedonistic interior to the jaw dropping cocktails. It seems almost blasphemous to call this a cocktail bar, as it soars above the rest of Puerto Banús’s Sex on the Beaches and Tequila Sunrises. Freudenhaus is, in reality, no less than a beautifully concocted mixology lab. That is to say, the cocktails are out of this world and the interiors in a world most of us wish we could live in full time. Frameless Perspex prints of beautiful women watch the mixologists hard at work. Its sexy interiors are completed by the bronzed mirrors, which line the ceiling like a diamond pleated quilt, suspended over the elegant island bar. All this is

The Sunborn Hotel is one of a new breed of five-star super-yacht hotels on our doorstep. Do you really need any further reason to visit? If you do, then the interiors of this 15,500 square metre luxurious abode are reason enough. The rooms are spacious and airy and complimented by the backdrop of the views of the marina. The yacht exudes space and light, showcasing the beautifully finished interiors and drawing the eye constantly to the splendour of its setting. The lighting throughout is particularly extraordinary, with the ballroom and entrance furnished with Swarovski crystal spheres of light that not only change colour but change height. Complete with restaurant, bars, a swimming pool and conference rooms and a spa and casino to follow shortly, this really is a luxurious experience on a totally different level.

Located in the perfect spot on the beach-front at Puente Romano, Seagrill is an elegant seafood restaurant that showcases what one would expect from such an established designer as Andrew Martin. The driftwood, shabby chic theme creates a stunningly muted backdrop for some feature pieces throughout the restaurant that give this homely design a real touch of old-style glamour. From the feature chandelier to the Hirshorn Spitfire armchairs, the restaurant’s interior successfully sets a mood that makes this eating place so much more than a mere chiringuito. With concertina glass windows that open up the space entirely for the summer months and a division of levels from the main bar to the dining area and beyond, Seagrill is THE example of luxury seaside dining perfected.

This beach-front spot on the promenade is not only perfectly located, but with its shabby chic, driftwood design it feels like it should always have been there. The bar top designed like a white, flowing tablecloth and the decadent accents of pinks throughout make it one of the prettiest front-line beach restaurants, complimented by the afternoon teas and gorgeous smoothies.
The soft, muted tones used in this design not only keep the feeling of space but intentionally highlight the proprietors’ generous relationship with Positively Pink. Forget heavy wooden panelling and sticky Guinness floors, Slainte has taken all of the best of Irish hospitality and design and brought it into the 21st century. With exposed stainless steel ventilation and brick-clad feature walls, an open fireplace and enough TV screens to make even the owner of Sony jealous, the venue is a brand new approach to a sports bar. Totally family oriented, there is even a crèche equipped with Xbox, films and a ball pit for the young ones. The clean-cut open space is furnished with vintage Oxford style armchairs and walnut wood tables bearing the
venue’s logo. The concertina front to the building opens up for summer months to allow a seamless flow from the terrace to the interior space. The inclusion of a rooftop terrace and pool room means that there is more than enough space for everyone. Although the interior is a more contemporary approach to an Irish Sports Bar, there is no loss of any Irish charm and the friendly and relaxed atmosphere is complimented by a fantastically diverse menu, catering for the hearty and hungry to the ones who want to watch their waistline.

he Balearic Islands are located to the east of the Iberian Peninsula in the western area of the Mediterranean Sea. Each of the four largest Balearic Islands – Mallorca, Ibiza, Formentera and Menorca – have land under vines, although the only island with a significant wine production is Mallorca. Prior to the dawn of phylloxera (a pest of commercial grapevines) in Europe, Mallorca was famed for its sweet Malmsey wine, no longer produced, but which historically was created from the omnipresent Malvasia grape found across the Mediterranean. Over the past 15 years great changes have occurred in the Mallorcan wine industry. International varieties that were once non-existent are now increasingly appearing across the island’s vineyards (Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot) along with local varieties (Callet, Manto Negro, Fogoneu, and Moll) and some Spanish inland grapes (Tempranillo

and Monastrell). A new generation of winemakers is giving the wines of the island a new sense of terroir, creating delicious wines, which please the palate of today´s most discerning wine drinkers as a result. In most cases, wines from the Balearic Islands offer superb value, minerality and a rich, vibrant fruitiness; the best of their red wines are full-bodied, powerful and long lived.

A Secret Garden - El Jardín de Lutz -
T
he conversation in the Society office turned to the subject of eating out the other day and we all agreed that Spain is a fabulous place to live since, unlike many parts of Europe, it is still comparatively easy to find places that serve the most fabulous dishes at very little cost. We also discovered that we have favourites for every eventuality. For a weekday lunch? There’s that great little family-run place on the corner that serves up venta style food and looks after its customers by always making sure that regulars are treated like kings. Whereas most restaurants would remind diners of the folly of turning up for lunch at three-thirty, the proprietors here may politely explain that the specials were all snapped up half an hour ago, but score bonus points by asking the chef to whip a special tortilla that tastes like heaven on a plate. Then there’s another place on the way home that stays open until the small hours and is the perfect place to enjoy a cocktail while you wait for your takeaway dinner to be packed up. On top of this, there are the beach clubs for the weekend meals in the summer

and, when the temperature drops, we can be found enjoying a British-style Sunday roast at one of the places on the paseo, where there is plenty of indoor seating for those rare days when it’s not warm enough to sit outside. So far, so good on the everyday front but where do you go when you want a special occasion restaurant that nonetheless has a friendly and relaxed ambience? Ladies and gentlemen, may we introduce El Jardin de Lutz? Situated in the super-luxe environs of the hotel at La Finca Cortesín, this is a wonderful place to sit and relax. As its name suggests, El Jardin de Lutz overlooks a beautiful Mediterranean garden filled with 1000 year-old olive trees and is presided over by a genius of an executive chef, namely Germanborn Lutz Bösing. However, the dishes on offer are very much Spanish in origin, with some truly fabulous fish and seafood on offer in particular. Lutz and his team of gastronomic magicians have already been awarded a coveted Sun in the Guía Repsol and it was clear that news of the menu had travelled far and wide, since on the day
that we visited the place was buzzing with amateur gastronomes hoping to sample some of the finest food this side of Cadiz. Our starter choices included some classics that had been given new life by a few twists and refinements. The Beef Steak Tartare with Orly Egg Yolk was a case in point; the member of the party who ordered this is a carnivore with impeccably tuned taste-buds and he declared this the best steak tartare he had ever sampled. We also ordered the Seabass Carpaccio with Tomato, Coriander and Avocado, the Green Bean Salad with Truffle Vinaigrette and Quail Breast, the Lobster Gazpacho with Avocado and Melon and the Potato Crêpe with Duck Fillet, Leek Sticks and Plum Sauce. All of these dishes were fabulous (why do more restaurants not offer lobster gazpacho?) but we felt that the Potato Crêpe with Duck Fillet, Leek Sticks and Plum Sauce was especially worthy of note, since it was such a tasty representation of what Lutz and the team do best. Anyone who has ever been to a Chinese restaurant will be very familiar to this old favourite, but after sampling Lutz’s take on this dish we found it difficult to imagine that it

had ever been anything other than a Mediterranean classic. We chose an equally diverse selection of main courses, arguably the most spectacular of which was the Potato Cube and Yolk Surprise with Soubise Sauce and Truffle. This was a potato tower containing an egg yolk which burst when the dish was cut with a knife to mingle with the onions in the soubise sauce and we especially enjoyed the luxurious touch of a truffle being shaved over the top of the dish at the table. This was a brilliant alternative to a classic tortilla española and there is no doubt that it will lure us back to this amazing restaurant before long. The other main courses that we chose were the Suckling Pig with Sweet Potatoes and Iberian Ham and Abodo, a recipe which is extremely popular in Cadiz and contained a special type of dogfish cooked in Cumin, Paprika and Vinegar and served with some small and delicious Crispy Shrimps. These both provided still more evidence that Mediterranean cuisine has a great record when it comes to preparing pork and fish in increasingly imaginative ways. However, many Spanish restaurants do tend to unravel when it comes to desserts
and can rarely offer more than the standard ‘flan’ or a mass-produced ice cream menu from one of the national companies. Could El Jardin de Lutz satisfy the sweet-toothed yearnings of our party? Of course it could! We chose the Carrot Cake, which was a very sophisticated version of an old favourite, with a beautifully moist texture and a distinctly orange flavour and it also contained some pistachios, which added to the novel recipe. The Frozen Fruits – Plum, Raspberry and Orange – were each filled with a delicious mousse corresponding to the flavour of the individual fruit, while the El Jardin de Lutz was a revelatory combination of Lemon and Extra Virgin Olive Oil Sorbet with Champagne and Vanilla Jelly. El Jardin de Lutz should be top of the list for anyone looking for Spanish cooking with a touch of the contemporary. This peaceful venue in one of the most picturesque local grande luxe venues delivers on all fronts and there is no doubt that chef Lutz Bösing will be clearing his mantelpiece to make room for all the awards that will be coming his way. ove it or hate it, Tripadvisor has become a social media phenomenon and taken its place at the top alongside the likes of Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Whether you decide to post your most recent experience, share your appreciation for a local haunt, critique a disappointing choice or simply read the latest reviews, Tripadvisor has hit the spot with tourists, locals and epicureans worldwide. Personally I prefer to peruse; I enjoy seeing the new gems rise and learning the secrets of my local favourites from the best critics the customers. Living in Marbella I’ve come to find myself using Tripadvisor when dining out, I like to try the best spots and see if they live up to their place at the top. Don Quijote in El Rosario soared to Number One at the beginning of the summer and has, incredibly, shuttled between the first and second spot for the past eight weeks, a real achievement for this relatively new Nowergian owned eatery on the outskirts of East Marbella. So this month, we decided to pay them a visit and find out a little more about how this previously unknown restaurant climbed to the top within just seven months of opening. The beautiful terrace first caught my eye on arrival; dressed with shrubbery and stunning illumination. We were immediately invited to take a seat at our table by the cheerful manageress, Sandra Sala Zimulinda. As I browsed the menu, salivating at the thought of

the beautiful slates they arrived on, determined to savour the last taste. The Pork Spring Roll was crisp on the outside and filled with succulent meat, whilst the mango was the perfect accompaniment.
every dish, a sigh of relief came over me when Sandra announced that the chef had prepared a selection of favourites for this evening. Thank goodness, as there was no way I would have been able to choose! Our first delight was Head Chef Jose Cardenas Gomez’s speciality, his personal recipe for Salmorejo with Olive Oil Ice Cream and diced Jamon Iberico. The creamy puree married beautifully with the cool ice cream and the flavourful meat. This is not a dish I wouldn’t have ordered myself but, I admit, I was converted as it was truly to-die-for. Next we welcomed Sautéed Scallops with Cauliflower Puree and Nutty Butter and Pork Spring Rolls with Thai Sauce with a Mango and Pineapple Salad. Both equally delicious, the Cauliflower Puree melted in my mouth leaving me scraping
As we took a few moments to enjoy the ambience between courses, Sandra kindly explained to us the wines she had selected and chatted enthusiastically. “Our chef, José adds his personal touch to all our dishes and is incredibly passionate about the food he prepares. We are so lucky to work in a team where everyone shares such a passion. José and the second chef Ismael, and myself and Maria, my Assistant Manageress all treat the restaurant as if it is our own.” She didn’t even need to tell me this, as the respect they have for each and the passion really comes across the moment you arrive. “So what is your favourite dish on the menu?” I jumped in; I had wanted to ask since we arrived as she talked so enthusiastically about every plate. “I honestly can’t choose, I love everything, we designed the menu for you to open it and want to try everything” (well we know that works!) Before I could ask her for some specifics our main courses began to arrive. Rack of Lamb with a Crust of Fresh Herbs served with a delicious Mushroom Risotto, Fillet Steak served with Seasonal Vegetables and Potatoes and the Beef Tenderloin for Two, cooked on a hot stone at the table. Whilst all equally delicious, the latter was really impressive and my personal favourite. The quality of the meat was exceptional and I was

informed they select the finest quality from the North of Spain. Another element that deserves a mention was the homemade Béarnaise sauce; put it this way - I licked the spoon! As you can imagine by this point we were barely able to stand due to the amount we had consumed, so when they announced dessert I think Sandra noticed the look on my face: “Don’t worry, you are sharing,” she revealed. I told myself I was just going to enjoy with my eyes but when she placed the Carrot Cake on the table I knew I was going to have to sample it.
Before we headed home for the evening, as we enjoyed our coffees and the live music, I managed to grab a last few moments with Sandra and José,“What do you believe has been the recipe for success at Don Quijote?” I asked. “Quality, passion, consistency and fun.” Well, I couldn’t have summed it up better myself. One visit to this jewel and I knew why they had reached the top. Don Quijote Restaurant Urbanizacion El Rosario, Marbella 29604 Tel. 952 83 47 48 restaurantedq.es

Delish DELI

mpulsive decisions are generally seen as a bad thing; if this is the case, popular new deli Delish must be an exception to the rule. Best friends of more than 10 years, Stine and Shadya, snapped up this wonderful locale, situated on the bustling Calle Las Malvas opposite the H10 Andalucia Plaza Hotel, in a fleeting, inspired moment. Admittedly, the pair’s love of food has been a lengthier affair. “We’ve always enjoyed cooking together,” Stine tells SOCIETY’s Features Editor, “Our children go to school together so our two families have spent many years having barbecues at each other’s homes at the weekend.” It is indeed quite clear that the dishes on offer at Delish are made by two avid foodies, who completely understand what people want from a takeaway deli. Every day the fridge is filled with food that is flavoursome and healthy. “We have a lot of tasty salads, ingredients such as quinoa are massively popular with our customers, as well as our
meatballs, Chinese beef stew, roast chicken and falafel.” That’s right, Delish offers all those classic dishes which you could only dream of having the time to make yourself every evening. For those of you with a sweet tooth, the Delish ladies have that covered also. Leila completes the team with her talent for baking cakes and other sweet treats; the fruit cheesecake, I hear, is a bestseller at the deli. All of the puddings are made on site, so benefit from that all-important home-made flavour. Organising a dinner party for ten? Then why not make life just a little bit easier and buy a magnificent looking cake from Delish to complete your meal? While you’re there, pick up a bottle of prosecco or blush rosé wine all in one swift purchase. Although only open a month or so, Stine and Shadya are already looking ahead at changing their dishes. “With winter not so far away, we have started planning
some new recipes to offer our clientele. Expect to walk in and find winter stews, casseroles and soups. Leila will also be altering her desserts to suit the colder weather, offering warm apple tart and other winter favourites.” Aside from the deli counter, Delish also stocks a colourful selection of products sourced from all over the globe. Every item would be nearby impossible to find elsewhere on the Coast and would also make a unique present for a friend or family member if you feel too guilty to indulge in the item yourself. Pick up chocolate flavoured coconut milk, jars of English lemon curd or novel caramelised sesame seeds, which add an extra crunch of texture to any dessert. There was a definite gap in the Marbella market for a take-away, gourmet deli such as Delish. A place where gym goers, office workers or stay-at-home mums planning a dinner party, could drop by and pick up a whole range of home cooked meals without the hassle of buying all of the ingredients the day before and standing for hours in the kitchen. I have sneaky feeling that Delish will soon become your new best friend. +34 952907627/ +34 609500340 Calle Las Malvas 12 Nueva Andalucía Delishmarbella.com

the coming of spring, and so cured meats and pulses are carefully stored and used through the winter months.
Spanish cuisine will never rival many of its European partners, but local produce and methods often produce culinary gems. They may be very local and not travel well. (Rather as when the Liberal M.P. and Bon Viveur Clement Freud checked in to a Kentish pub for lunch. A delighted landlord presented him with a glass of white wine. Freud took a sniff, tasted it, and asked, in his own inimitable way, “Where’s this from?” “This wine”, said the landlord proudly, “is produced in our own vineyard to the rear of the pub.” “Ah!” rejoined Freud, “it doesn’t travel well, does it?”) But when local
excellent accompaniment to the salmon of the local rivers, or the seafood of the Bay of Biscay. There is also a wonderful blue cheese called Cabrales, which may well end a meal sufficient to fortify the gastronomic traveller as he moves east into the Basque country. Here he will need all the culinary resilience he can muster as he faces Apalaurreaudiak or Txitxardiñak. They claim that this is the language spoken by Adam and Eve as they fell from Paradise (which, as every Welshman knows, is nonsense). Be that as it may, it may truly be claimed that here the discerning diner will find perhaps the best cuisine in Spain. This is partly due to the existence of cooking societies open only to men, called tripasais, who exercise their skills in well equipped and stocked kitchens. Many will confess, however, how much they owe to standing at the matriarchal knee as mama stirs her pots! Apalaurreaudiak is lunch, and may well consist of txitxardiñak; baby eels sizzled in garlic. Marmitako (the French influence may be discerned in this word; there are three French Basque provinces) is a stew of tuna and potatoes, but whilst many such fresh fish are used, a staple is to be found in bacalao; salt cod imported from northern seas. Accompanying such seafood may be Chacolí, the local tangy white wine, redolent with the sea breezes which blow over the vineyards. Amongst the meat dishes on offer one might well be offered a chuleta de buey, which is a massive beef “chop”, weighing over half a kilo. Not for the fainthearted!
produce and local expertise combine, the result may be a gastronomic delight. Some
dishes in Spain are national; Cocido, Tortilla, Sopa de Ajo. They may have slight regional variations, but they are basically the same and, more often than not, reliable. If we begin to look around the country, however, we begin to see that underlying the sameness, not to say blandness, of the average Spanish restaurant, there lurks a hidden wealth of gastronomic delight. In this article we shall glance at a few areas to the north of the country. The Principality of Asturias is an area more akin to Wales, Ireland or Brittany than to Andalusia or Murcia. It is a land of lush meadows and pastures, fast running streams, mists and damp. For this reason the Celts felt quite at home here. But despite this difference, in many ways it may claim to be the most Spanish of all Spain. It was here that the Visigothic kings entrenched themselves to fight off the Moorish invaders and, never conquered, began the gradual reconquest of the peninsula which finally ended in 1492 with the fall of Granada. The climate here has given rise to the “fabada”. As winter freezes outside, inside a pot of beans and sausage gently bubbles on the stove. This is a land where the bounty of the harvest has to last until

Rioja is best known for its wine, often of a fairly robust character. The food of the area is similarly robust and features more ways of dealing with beans than one can shake a spoon at. Its near neighbour, Navarre, harbours a people known for their vast appetites and cast iron digestive systems. Pamplona produces chorizos, whilst the surrounding countryside nurtures hardy sheep. Roncal is a hard, creamy cheese made
COSTA CUISINE
from the milk of these flocks. Such sheep are also to be found in nearby Aragón, an ancient kingdom redolent with history. Its landscape is often desolate, and looks as though it has been left behind by history (although it was the scene of some of the bitterest fighting during the Spanish Civil War). The wolves and bears now to be found in Ordesa were undoubtedly there when Caesar Augustus added Spain to the Roman empire (and Zaragoza was named after him). The food of the area is like the countryside, plain and simple, but locally of the highest quality. The most famous dish is Chilindrón, a delicious mix of lamb or chicken braised with tomatoes and peppers. Criadillas, perhaps not for the faint
hearted, are lambs’ testicles battered and deep friend, whilst the erstwhile owners are seasoned with salt, garlic and bacon fat, spitted, and roasted over a wood fire. And if you are a vegetarian, avoid espárragos montañes which are actually lambs’ tails braised in tomato. A dish naturally dear to the author’s heart is presa de predicador, “preacher’s game”, a melange of beef, mutton, pork, chicken and sausage. This may be washed down with the local wines of Cariñena, dense and almost black. The production of cherries and peaches has given rise to a candied fruit industry, which form a favourite gift on festive occasions. Our tour will continue...

SPINNING MONEY FOR ASPANDEM CLINIC Pan y Marmelada Café, took place in aid of the Aspandem clinic. Located in San Pedro de Alcántara, Aspandem is facing the momentous task of equipping its clinic with all the latest technology and facilities needed for the team to carry out their invaluable work. In support of this mission, Dynamic requested that every person pay €20 to participate in the intensive session and each individual also received a free t-shirt and complimentary inscription to the Gym. La Catarina was on hand to reward participants with a special artisanal beer after the gruelling test of fitness. The atmosphere was electric throughout the event, with two instructors from the Gym leading the pack with motivational cheers and upbeat house music to keep energy high.

CHIC OUTLET SHOPPING
L
ove designer labels but hate designer prices? We have the perfect place for you: the new Málaga Fashion Outlet located on Avenida de Velazquez offers a truly unique retail experience. Enjoy exceptional savings of up to 70 per cent on the Recommended Retail Price of countless top name brands. From the most famous fashion houses such as Dior, Fendi, Roberto Cavalli and Jimmy Choo to more informal fashion forward brands like Guess and Dsquared, there really is something for everyone.
The owners make frequent buying trips to Italy throughout the year, meaning that the stock is continually changed. For example, the store is currently being stocked with ski clothes and winter accessories including Jimmy Choo earmuffs and scarves. The other advantage to replenishing the stock so regularly is that the Málaga Fashion Outlet can offer a full range of sizes, as there is nothing more infuriating than a designer outlet store which has clothing items available only XS or XL. Most impressive of all, Málaga Fashion Outlet stock is never more than last
season’s collection, in fact many of the items on sale are current season yet you may still make a 50 per cent saving on the RRP. With clothes, shoes and accessories including sunglasses, handbags, beach towels, scarves, gloves and caps available to both men and women, shopping at Málaga Fashion Outlet is pure retail pleasure. A RESTAURANT FIT FOR A DAME
wald Fichthaler and his skilled culinary team were proud and delighted to welcome Dame Shirley Bassey through the doors of Nueva Kaskada last month. It seems Bassey is quite a fan of this fine dining restaurant, since this was not her first visit to Ewald’s establishment. The Dame, famed for her lead vocals on James Bond theme songs Goldfinger and Diamonds Are Forever, enjoyed a fabulous evening of food and drink with a close circle of friends. Speaking to Ewald, she said, “I will be back for a third time very soon, the service and your culinary creations have been perfect, as always”.

At the end of September, Nueva Kaskada also celebrated its third anniversary under Ewald Fichthaler’s leadership. Ewald, who has over thirty years of experience as a chef, arrived on the Costa del Sol some 16 years ago and is considered a true talent by all those who have tasted his innovative dishes at Nueva Kaskada. Congratulations, Ewald, on your continued culinary excellence. Open for dinner Wednesday - Sunday from 19.30 and lunch Friday - Sunday from 13.30 Nuevakaskada.com

PARADISE IS NOW EVEN MORE BEAUTIFUL!
l Paraiso Golf Club sits in a tranquil valley between Marbella and Estepona. As a true members’ club, owned and run by the people who use the course, it has always enjoyed a reputation as “the friendliest club on the coast”. Visiting golfers are assured of a warm welcome but most important to them is the golfing experience. Despite the financial crisis, El Paraiso has invested heavily in recent years to upgrade the condition of the course. The Club celebrated its 40th anniversary last year, so a bit of a facelift was needed! The design of this Gary Player layout is widely acclaimed but a valley course always has drainage issues. Major improvements in this respect have therefore been carried out in each of the past four years. Apart from helping to keep the course open after heavy rains, this also ensures better quality grass coverage. Some fairways have been in need of improvement and nearly 10,000 square metres have been renewed. In July a brand new USGA green was opened on the first hole and in August a much enlarged practise putting green was unveiled.

Attractive new tees have been constructed on the men’s seventh and 14th holes and for the ladies’ on the 13th hole. New buggy paths have been built on the seventh and eighth holes and three beautiful new bridges in Casares stone have been completed this summer. New equipment acquired to ensure the highest standards of green keeping includes a specialist tees mower, a greens sprayer, a sand pro, a Versa Vac sweeper and verticutter and a large rough mower.
Colourful new tee signs in ceramic tiles provide maps of each hole. Many visitors comment on the number of bright flowerbeds which two of the members have created and planted. More than 200 trees have been planted during the past five years. With numerous varieties of birds joining the resident black swans, hoopoes, ducks and herons, a player has plenty to admire if the golf is not going too well! Elparaisogolfclub.com +34 952 88 38 35
