PUBLISHER’S LETTER
Society Marbella published by and produced by: PUBLISHER Andy Clark DESIGNER
IT’S MAY IN MARBELLA! This is where we really step up to summer – the beach clubs are open, the weather is great and those of us who work indoors start to feel just a bit resentful. P!nk has dominated the pop scene for some time now and it is probably about time that music pundits stopped wondering if she is a flash-in-the-pan act or a singer with real longevity. Our Features Editor Amber O’Shaughnessy is a big fan and has even been to see her live, so she seemed the ideal person to offer an overview of P!nk’s story so far. From her beginnings as the fearless (mad?) woman who wanted to get that party started and seemed to have styled herself on the comic book heroine, Tank Girl, to the more sophisticated version that we see today, she certainly has learned how to turn heads and sell albums. Her Greatest Hits...So Far!!! was a bestseller and her follow-up, The Truth About Love was equally successful. In 2011 she voiced the character of Gloria in Happy Feet Two and she has also acted in movies, most recently appearing in 2013’s Thanks for Sharing. It will be interesting to see what she does next. If you are thinking of spending some money on renovating your house or rethinking your décor in time for the summer take the FOC team’s Define your Design quiz to discover what is your style statement. Our resident expert, Andrea Böck also has some elegant design suggestions. Andrea always seem to know what the hottest trends are, way in
advance of everybody else – how does she do it? We love a good cuppa round here at Society Towers, so this month we asked our resident sage, Padre Peter, to find out how tea has become one of the world’s favourite beverages. From the ancient tea ceremonies of the East to the mugs of builders’ brew that we rely on to get us through the day, it really is the cup that cheers. Fancy an exotic holiday? We have been hearing great reports of Peru, so we thought that we would feature this beautiful and fascinating country and offer some suggestions of how you can experience the best travel and accommodation options. Ian Kuah has been out and about again in his quest to discover the best of what is currently on the road and this month he is full of praise for the Jaguar F-Type Coupe. From “this car is no pussycat” to “it has a tiger in its tank” we were tempted to pull out all the feline clichés for this amazing addition to the Jaguar stable. The SOCIETY MARBELLA team is looking forward to the opening of La Sala’s By the Sea venue to evening diners on Friday the 23rd. This is such a great venue that it won’t be long before finding a table becomes quite a challenge. Maybe we will see you there? Until next time... Andy Clark

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT Pop Singer P!nk continues to be fabulously fearless with the release of her sixth studio album
“P!NK stood up for her music, broke the music industry’s mould and challenged a school of teen singers to find their own sounds as well.”
20
Beauty with an EDGE By Amber O’Shaughnessy
N
ever one to shy away from a challenge, P!nk opened her performance at the 2014 Grammys with a spell-binding spin, hanging upside down from a rope. As I sat watching the performance, it became obvious why the world of music fans has such a penchant for this outlandish singer – P!nk (real name Alecia Beth Moore Hart) is quite simply fearless.
Never scared to break the rules or push the boundaries of what a pop star should look like, P!nk began her music career back in 2000 with her single ‘There You Go’, but it was dance-floor favourite ‘Get the Party Started’ which really hurtled the singer into Billboard fame. The video to the track features P!nk stealing a skateboard from two boys in order to get to a party which she is subsequently refused entry to and so climbs scaffolding to get into the building instead. And so began P!nk’s no-nonsense music career.
CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT
‘Get the Party Started’ was the lead track on the 2001 album M!ssundaztood, which achieved global commercial and critical success and featured chart topping singles ‘Just Like a Pill’ and ‘Don’t Let Me Get Me’. The album had a resounding urban influence and was marked throughout with P!nk’s signature nonconformist mentality. Behind P!nk’s seemingly ‘don’t care’ attitude on this album, the lyrics pack some serious punch on gritty topics such as divorce, drug abuse and teenage angst. In particular, the final track ‘Family Portrait’ reveals a rarely seen vulnerable side, as she sings about the separation of her parents when she was a child. Her treatment of such hard-hitting topics seemed to speak volumes to teenagers and young adults throughout the world who took notice of this singer who was ‘real’ and flawed like any normal human. Robert Hilburn of the Los Angeles Times comments, “P!nk stood up for her music, broke the music industry’s mould and scored a breakout hit, challenging a school of teen singers to find their own sounds as well.” He adds, “[P!nk] also started a race among other teen pop stars like Christina Aguilera add substance to their own sound.” It was not until I went to see P!nk in concert that it dawned on me how vocally talented the singer is. As well as consistently delivering electric performances, P!nk has a rocky edge to her voice which allows her to create a uniquely raw rasp on certain notes while also being able to access higher notes with brightness and clarity. The Star Tribune commends the singer by saying, “Her slightly raspy, slightly soulful voice made you feel the dysfunction in ‘Family Portrait’, the longing of ‘Who Knew’ and the empowerment in ‘Perfect’.”
Women have fought so long and hard for our rights and equality, and now all our attention is put on being a size 0.
People are always so surprised when they meet me. Firstly, that I’m ‘so tiny’, and secondly that I’m ‘so sweet’. They seem surprised that they’re not scared of me. British soul singer Adele considers P!nk’s performance at the Brixton Academy in London as one of “the most defining moments” in her life, telling Spinner, “It was the M!ssundaztood record, so I was about 13 or 14. I had never heard, being in the room, someone sing like that live. Before that I was into the Spice Girls and stuff like that and they can’t sing obviously. I know that now. I remember sort of feeling like I was in a wind tunnel, her voice just hitting me. It was incredible.” Nearly 15 years on, the 34-year old artist has ditched the vivid fuchsia pink locks for a more ‘mature’ pale rose, but still remains one of the boldest and outspoken artists of our generation. She has recently released new album The Truth About Love which features the successful single ‘Just Give Me a Reason’ that has gained international acclaim. With a Brit nomination last February for Best International Female as well as the coveted Best Song of the Year nomination at the 56th Grammy Awards, P!nk continues to produce music which speaks from the heart. Her philanthropic exploits should also be congratulated. As a prominent campaigner for PETA, P!nk spoke out for causes such as the protest against KFC. She is also involved with many charities including UNICEF, the Prince’s Trust, Save the Children and has recently been officially recognised as an advocator for the RSPCA in Australia. Aside from this, P!nk has shown support for marriage equality and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender rights. In a society where we obsess over size zero celebrities, it is a joy and a delight to see a pop singer use her fame to promote inner beauty in such a fabulously fearless way.

HOT OFF THE PRESS New fiction releases out this month
‘The Silkworm – A Comoran Strike Novel’ by Robert Galbraith J. K. Rowling (under her Robert Galbraith pseudonym) brings us another thrilling adventure tale, courtesy of private detective Cormoran Strike and his assistant, Robin Ellacott. Hot on the heels of their last mystery in the novel The Cuckoo’s Calling this dynamic duo sets about uncovering the sinister truths about novelist Owen Quine who disappears for an unknown reason. A difficult-toput-down, compelling read to the very last page.
‘Personal’ by Lee Child As one of the world’s leading thriller writers, Child delivers yet another heart stopping read in his latest offering, Personal. Jack Reacher is brought back into the detective game as he is tasked with tracking down a hitman who has taken a long-range shot at the French president. Child takes Reacher across the Atlantic to Paris and then to London in this fast paced tale of mystery and personal vendettas.
‘Stone Matress: Nine Tales’ by Margaret Atwood Atwood delivers some serious storytelling punch in this novel made up of nine tales. With hints of the fantastical, readers of Stone Mattress will be seduced by stories such as that of a woman born with a genetic abnormality meaning she is constantly mistaken for a vampire and a recently widowed fantasy writer who is guided through a stormy winter evening by the voice of her late husband.
‘Us’ by David Nicholls He did it with One Day and he has done it again in new novel Us; Nicholls intertwines wit, sadness and brutal realism into a tale of family relations. Waterstones has predicted that this publication will be “one of the major events in the world of books in 2014” and we wholeheartedly agree.

‘Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage’ by Haruki Murakami and Philip Gabriel Selling more than a million copies in its first week in Japan, you can expect big things from this book by internationally acclaimed authors Murakami and Gabriel. It tells the story of a man whose four best senior school friends, Mr Red, Mr Blue, Miss White and Miss Black, ostracise him because he is ‘colourless’, that is he is the only one without a kanji symbol for a colour. Murakami’s UK publisher, Liz Foley at Harvill Secker told The Guardian that she predicted the novel would “inspire a whole new raft of fans for his work”.

SUMMER SIZZLERS
Summer feels just around the corner and, with the opening of the Coast’s many beach clubs, this May we take a look at which tunes are going to be the sounds of summer ‘14.
Calvin Harris ‘Summer’ This song’s uplifting lyrics, “When I met you in the summer to my heartbeat sound” make it destined to dominate the dance floor in the coming months. It is hard to imagine a summer when Calvin Harris doesn’t kill it with his statement sunny beats.
Chris Malinchak ‘If U Got It’ He has done it again! Summer 2013 was filled with the mellowed-out house tune ‘So Good to Me’ and now this year Malinchak’s ‘If U Got It’ is going to be another summer banger. The American DJ provides a masterclass in sugary melodies.
Sam Smith ‘Stay With Me’ The 21 year-old Brit took the world by storm as the voice on Disclosure’s super successful track ‘Latch’ back in 2012 and the sensation that is Sam Smith shows no signs of slowing down. ‘Stay with Me‘ - released in June - is likely to be one of the hottest tracks this summer with its emotive harmonies and listener-friendly lyrics.
Faul & Wad Ad vs Pnau ‘Changes’ Unmistakeably summery, it is impossible not to feel excited about the summer months when listening to this single. French producer Faul has taken the chorus from ‘Baby’ sung by a children’s choir and transformed it into a deep house summer anthem with the help of some sax-on-the-beach riffs.
Duke Dumont ‘I Got U’ Steel drums and a blissful background beat make this song a summer essential. Duke Dumont seems unstoppable at the moment and this track is just as good as ‘Need U (100%)’, which skyrocketed the British record producer into big name territory.

Celebs Cara Delevingne and Leonard DiCaprio flock to Coachella Festival A-list celebrities can’t seem to get enough of the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in Palm Springs, California. Leonardo DiCaprio, with new girlfriend, Calvin Klein model Toni Garrn, was spotted busting some serious shapes watching MGMT and Beyonce and Jay Z rocked out to Skrillex’s set in the Sahara tent. Cara Delevingne, ever the party animal, also attended the festival with sister Poppy. The pair posted various photos on Instagram of themselves arriving at the event by helicopter before partying the weekend away.

The tragic death of Peaches Geldof Any death in celebville always causes shock and speculation and none more so than the sudden and, so far, unexplained demise of Peaches Honeyblossom Geldof on 7 April 2014. Young mother, wife and daughter of Bob Geldof and the late Paula Yates, 25-year old Peaches was never the partying ‘It’ girl you so often see falling out of exclusive London clubs. She spent several years as a columnist for The Daily Telegraph then The Guardian commenting on socio-political issues. Peaches also wrote and presented her own TV documentary Peaches Geldof: Teenage Mind in 2005 and in 2011, she presented a six-part series on ITV2 called OMG! with Peaches Geldof, a magazine-format chat and guest show with audience participation.
26

But it seems that the young Geldof girl never truly grieved for her mother after she passed away from a heroin overdose in 2000. ‘I remember the day my mother died, and it’s still hard to talk about it,’ she told Elle magazine last year. ‘I just blocked it out. I went to school the next day, because my father’s mentality was, ‘Keep calm and carry on’ So we all went to school and tried to act as if nothing had happened.’ All we do know is that Peaches’ final Instagram posting on the evening before her death was a photo of her and her mother, captioned simply ‘My mum and me’. As SOCIETY MARBELLA went to press, the cause of Peaches’ tragic death, at only 25 years old, was still unknown.
Bad boy James Arthur It’s been a bumpy old road for X Factor winner James Arthur who won the talent show back in 2012. Amidst Twitter slurs, homophobic rants and lyrics that seem to promote terrorism, it is hardly surprising that rumours have been circulating that say the 26 year-old has been dropped by his record label, Syco. Speaking to Heat magazine, Simon Cowell commented, ‘He’s still on our label. I would say to him, like I would say to any artist ‘you won the show, you’re selling millions of records - be happy’. We couldn’t agree more! Image courtesy of solarpix.com
... Victoria Beckham turns 40 The fashion designer-cum-Spice Girl celebrated her 40th birthday last month and what better way to spend the big day than a stay at an exclusive spa resort in the Grand Canyon – oh, and a dinner at elite eatery Nobu in Los Angeles? Victoria and David, her husband of nearly 15 years, were spotted leaving the A-list haunt alongside celebrity pals, Gordon and Tana Ramsay. To many, this may seem a rather staid affair for such a landmark birthday but Victoria apparently favours a dinner with a small group of her closest friends and family to any big birthday bash. A source told The Sun: “Victoria wanted family time so it has been kept very intimate and low key. Their lives are 100 miles an hour so she wanted to be away from the limelight and city life as they have that all the time.”

Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin split Yet another shock in the world of celebrity was the announcement that Chris Martin, 37 and Paltrow, 41 have decided to divorce. The couple, who have been together for 10 years, have two children Apple, nine and Moses, seven. In a statement issued by the pair, they said that they are and “always will be a family, and in many ways we are closer than we have ever been. We are parents first and foremost, to two incredibly wonderful children and we ask for their and our space and privacy to be respected at this difficult time.” Such situations are always that much harder when played out under the celebrity spotlight so we hope the family can get through it with relative ease.
Lindsay Lohan ‘meltdown’ on own reality show Rarely out of the headlines these days, some may have been fooled into thinking that LiLo’s new documentary series was an attempt to repair her tarnished image. Unfortunately, the series led by the Oprah Winfrey has done the exact opposite. In the final episode, Lindsay reveals she recently suffered a miscarriage and begins to sob on camera. The eight-part reality show has also shown the 27-year old actress open up about her so called ‘sex list’ amongst other trashy revelations. Oprah is said to be furious with Lindsay’s behaviour and has pulled the plug on a second series.

ritish millionaire Andrew Bush, 49, was allegedly shot in the head by his ex-lover, Mayka Kukucova, at his luxury Spanish villa in Estepona. The 23 year-old Slovakian, who may have been holed up at his villa for up to a week, ambushed Mr Bush and his current girlfriend, 21-year-old student Maria Korotaeva, when they arrived at the villa to celebrate their five-month anniversary. After allegedly shooting Mr Bush three times, Miss Kukucova is believed to have fled the scene in Mr Bush’s Hummer. A part-time model, Miss Kukucova is being held in custody in Slovakia after managing to flee Spain in the wake of her former lover’s death, despite an international manhunt. She has been accused of killing him in revenge for being dumped late last year, but is reportedly claiming she acted in selfdefence. A court in her homeland is expected to approve her extradition to Spain within the next month.
María Korotaeva
Mr Bush’s family has painted a disturbing picture of an irrational woman whose jealous rages destroyed her relationship with the multi-millionaire jeweller. Daughter Ellie explained that she would throw tantrums in his Bristol shops, check computers he had used and go through his phone. However, Miss Kukucova’s lawyer, Michal Filip told The Sun, “Mayka left Spain because she feared for her life and health. This was because of Andy Bush and the people that he was meeting with.” He added: “We deny that she broke into his house and was lying on a bed in pyjamas.” The Sun reported that the model told her parents she was defending herself and had gone to Mr Bush’s house because she was pregnant and wanted child support. The case continues.

ormer PM Tony Blair and his wife Cherie were spotted strolling around Marbella Old Town during the Easter break. This is the first time they have been seen together since Nelson Mandela’s memorial service in December. Their holiday in Marbella comes just over a week after Rupert Murdoch broke his silence on his divorce from Wendy Deng. The media mogul has said he divorced his wife because of claims she was close to the former Prime Minister. It was alleged in February that Miss Deng, 45, had written notes praising Mr Blair’s “good body” and his “butt”. In a list of reasons why “I’m so missing Tony”, she gushed in poor English about his “pierce blue eyes which I love. Love his eyes. Also I love his power on the stage”.
I We all know the Blairs love a bit of celeb schmoozing, so when Antonio Banderas offered to give them a tour of Málaga during the Semana Santa processions we are sure they jumped at the chance. Banderas and Blair watched the parade from the balcony of the Larios Hotel and seemed to be getting on famously.

Amy is said to be buried behind the fifth stable block at the Hipodromo Costa del Sol, just above La Cala de Mijas. In the photo the red circle highlights the aforementioned stable blocks.

housands of British university students arrived in the Spanish holiday resort of Salou, one hour south of Barcelona, for the annual Saloufest I LoveTour 2014, which is essentially a week-long drinking binge. The week kicks off with the students warming up, by downing large amounts of alcohol at the hotel, then moving down to the beachfront for lunch and more alcohol. This is followed later by an 11-hour fancy dress drinking marathon between the many bars and clubs around town. The same itinerary applied for the whole week. We feel for the poor locals.

“I would rather go naked than wear high street”
We’ve all seen the press – the high street mascara that exceeds the results of even the priciest department store brand. The face cream that costs less than half its luxury rival, yet has a waiting list. So do we really need to pay out for designer beauty products? The truth is that there are good and bad products in all price categories. Here are our tips on where to splurge and where to save on makeup.
38
Eye shadow
Foundation Skincare products such as foundation, concealers and primers are where you should invest your money. The more expensive products may have certain ingredients in them, such as sunscreen, vitamins and added antioxidants, all of which raise the price of makeup. Luxury brand foundation lines are formulated with finely milled ingredients, and this results in a smoother, more even application on your skin. You’ll use less product because high-end foundations generally offer more coverage than their less expensive counterparts. We recommend Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua Ultra-Light Skin Perfecting Makeup and Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Mascara Mascara has the shortest lifespan - only two to three months. Much of its quality
degrades due to frequent exposure to air, which causes its formula to dry and crust. As much as we love YSL Faux Effect, when it starts to clump after three weeks it is literally money down the drain. Cheapie mascaras that work and won’t put as big a dent in your wallet are Loreal Voluminous Mascara, Maybelline Falsies Mascara and Rimmel London Volume Flash Bold Curves Mascara. Blush The fine art of a luxury powder lies in the degree to which it’s been pulverized. The finest will allow you to layer and layer without ever looking like a clown. High street blushers tend to be too powdery with little pigment. They are filled with a lot of talc, meaning you have to use a lot of product to get the desired effect. Invest in Dior Rosy Glow Awakening Blush.
While pigmentation plays a big part in choosing whether to opt for designer or drugstore cosmetics, makeup’s spoiling cycle should do too. Eye shadows are recommended for a maximum lifespan of only three months. Drugstores have really stepped up their game when it comes to eye shadows by improving their colour payoff and pigmentation. Sleek palettes should go straight onto your must-have list, Bourjois shadows are very pigmented and Maybelline Eye Studio Color Tattoo stay on forever and blend beautifully. Lipstick Save and spend. Go cheap for trendy colours that will only be hot this season. If you like to wear one classic shade all the time, you might want to spend more for a richer lipstick that will last longer without drying out your lips. High street hotties are L’Oréal Paris Colour Juice Sheer Juicy Lip Gloss, Revlon Super Lustrous Crème Lipstick and Avon Ultra Colour Rich Mega Impact Lipstick. Oh, and don’t overlook good old Vaseline. This multi-tasking product acts as a lip balm or gloss and can also be used to create wet look shadow or a highlighter sheen. Brushes Investing in good quality makeup brushes and tools will not only help to give you a flawless makeup look, but you’ll actually save money in the long run. You can extend the use of your foundation by applying it with a pro foundation brush - it will create an airbrushed look, and you’ll use less product than if you used your fingers. Tom Ford Smoky Eye Brush, Giorgio Armani Blender Brush and Chanel Concealer Brush #10 are a few of our favourites.

BACK Time
How did you get into the world of aesthetic practice? I have always been fascinated by beauty and medicine, then one day I decided to combine my two loves and began working in aesthetic medicine. How would you describe your work in one sentence? I give people back their youth. What made you passionate about working with the face and skin? It would have to be the immediate results achieved from the treatments I use and the customer satisfaction. You cannot beat that feeling when you see a client’s face light up when they see the final results.

age management, pain management and other areas. It is also important to note that the team of doctors, surgeons, dentists, anaesthetists and nurses all belong to The Trinon Collegium Practicum, an organization which has an international focus and works with established partner organizations to provide a high standard of care to patients and education to doctors. We have several research groups working with the USA, Singapore and Germany.
Tell us about your latest treatments? We only work with the most innovative treatments, which offer a faster and more natural recovery and restoration. Ozone therapy is the latest addition that we can offer to our clients to improve the quality of their skin. Ozone therapy is used in Aesthetic Medicine, due to the gas’s incredible properties that induce cellular and antioxidant activation, act as a powerful germicide and an agent capable of reactivating the production of collagen/elastin and as an inductor of lipolysis. The ozone is a unique agent in the saving and restoration of the natural beauty and health of your skin. These skin treatments do not hide flaws, but restore the natural functions and stimulate the normal skin processes. They are based on essential elements only: water and oxygen/ozone.
What can a new patient expect during the initial consultation? In our clinic we give the patient a personalized aesthetic evaluation based on the extensive expertise of our medical team. You will leave knowing that you will have access to the most innovative treatments on the market.
What do you consider to be your areas of expertise? Aesthetic medicine and especially rejuvenation of the face and skin. Tell us about the clinic? Titanium Clinic Marbella is part of the Titanium Group, which is established in Spain and Santo Domingo, with clinics in Madrid, Santo Domingo, Granada, Nerja, León, Ejido, Motril and Marbella. The Marbella Clinic is a leader in the group and is known for having the latest technology and the highest standards of treatments in the fields of dental, aesthetic medicine,
Which are your most popular treatments? The anti-wrinkle botulinum toxin type A, fillers and peels.
What do you think makes a good patient/ doctor relationship? Be honest with the patient and do not offer false expectations of the results that can be achieved. Sun damage is a major issue in Spain. How do you treat this? The best way is to combine several methods: peeling, IPL and don’t forget what a good quality sunscreen can achieve.
How do you stay abreast of the latest in cosmetology and aesthetic treatments? Being a physician who belongs to the Spanish
Society of Aesthetic Medicine means that I am constantly aware of the latest techniques and most innovative and effective treatments;
also participating in national and international conferences on the antiaging industry keeps me up to date. Have you seen an increase in men taking up aesthetic treatments? Yes! More and more men are seeking botulinum toxin treatment, because they see results in their partners. What do you see in the future of the aesthetic medicine? I think the future of aesthetic medicine and anti-aging is moving towards prevention rather than trying to rejuvenate after the deterioration of the skin. titaniumclinic.com

Childhood Trauma –– CAUSE, IMPACT AND RECOVERY –– Written by Alexandra Madureira with the assistance of Claire Puttock
A
tra uma can happen to most people during their lives, dealing with the death of a loved one or coping with a serious illness in a family for example, and the aftermath can be extremely difficult to cope with. However childhood trauma can have an even more profound impact and can influence our character, behaviour and the way we perceive ourselves throughout our lives. It can cause us to be abusive to ourselves or to others. Dealing with the fallout can be difficult, but recovery is possible. Low self-esteem, depression, anxiety, addictions and other mental health conditions, such as eating or personality disorders, can be caused or exacerbated by what we experience in our childhood. Take Michael for example; he bullies other children at his school, calling them names and physically hurting them; he is disruptive in class and disrespectful to his teachers. Or little Sarah who seems nervous, isolates herself and is often in tears at the most insignificant thing. Both Michael and Sarah may be reacting to trauma experienced at the hands of parents, relatives or other caregivers from birth and / or throughout their childhood years. Sometimes it’s much harder to spot. This type of abuse could be physical, mental or the result of exposure to aggression or addiction at home.
The way we are treated as children influences the way our brain develops and creates a long lasting ‘blueprint’ that can shape the way we live our lives. This
can manifest itself by unconsciously repeating the patterns of childhood trauma in the form of abusing others or ourselves, forming unhealthy addictions, or living with unmanageable emotions.
42
Alexandra Madureira MBPsS, resident psychologist at the medical and psychological clinic, Cortijo Care, based in San Pedro.
Psychiatrists and psychologists often refer to the impact of childhood trauma as ‘dysregulation’. In short this means we can find it hard to regulate our thoughts, feelings and behaviour because of what happened to us as children. In our early years our brains are delicate so if a parent or caregiver abuses us and inflicts stress, our brains develop differently to those who grow up in more stable and loving environments.
within a safe environment. Through this process of realisation, the client can begin to understand why they may endure or inflict abusive behaviours on themselves, others, or indeed both. It then becomes possible, with the ongoing support of the therapist, to influence their brains to think and act in a more positive way, using coping strategies, better communication skills and thought processing.
Trauma in our early years will alert the brain to scan for threats and respond to them instinctively. Continuous activation of these responses can create a permanent susceptibility to perceive the world as a hostile place in which we have to protect ourselves. For some there may be a genetic vulnerability that is aggravated by trauma; for others this is not the case. Regardless of this we are born with an instinctive predisposition to form a strong bond with our mother. If she fails us in any way it can affect the health of our connection to her, or others as we grow.
Mental illnesses, addictions, eating and anxiety disorders are problems that are surmountable when we can get the right help from highly trained therapists and doctors. The impact of this treatment can be far reaching, improving our relationships with partners, children and loved ones and, most importantly, ourselves.
The brain however, does have the ability to recover from childhood trauma and we can stop the cycle of abuse. A transformation can occur by which we make the transition from feeling neglected to feeling secure, from feeling unloved to feeling cherished. Psychotherapy is an effective way of helping people to make the changes in their lives that can restore their ability to stop destructive patterns and enhance a state of well-being. Therapists will encourage clients, in a healthy and manageable way, to talk about themselves, their feelings, behaviours and life experiences. This helps the therapist to establish trust with the client. Through this the client can start to experience a more accurate sense of self-awareness and an understanding of how childhood traumas have impacted their lives
If your feelings and behaviour have become unmanageable and damaging, or if you know someone who in this position, help is at hand and recovery is possible. Moving
from an emotionally dark place into one of light takes courage, effort and time, but the improvement in the quality of our lives and those of the people around us is more than worth the effort. Cortijo Care specialises in Trauma Resolution Therapies including EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprogramming). Call us now for a confidential chat or to book an appointment on 952 780 181. COUNT-BACK DECIDES ALFERINI WINNERS
Photos by Jacob Cubero Carreras
This month Sala Super League headed to Alferini, in the grounds of Villa Padierna Hotel, for the third event in the year-long competition. As always it was extremely close - a three-way tie, in fact - and only decided on count-back. List and Bedrog triumphed, taking home the winning prize, closely followed by Sala Group and Team Marbella. In the individual competition Pat Jones from Team Marbella took home the highest award. The players then returned to La Sala for drinks, nibbles, an auction raising funds for DEBRA and the monthly prize-giving.

GUYS AND DOLLS AT BEACH HOUSE “A little party never killed nobody” - this was very much the attitude at The Beach House’s 1920s event this month; guests wearing flapper dresses and sequinned headpieces enjoyed live entertainment and top quality cuisine, both of which have become synonymous with The Beach House. Masquerade was a particular highlight, as they performed classic hits from the recent film of The Great Gatsby. Suffice to say this Roaring Twenties event was a roaring success!

Defining your design style is the key to creating a room that really reflects it. This may sound daunting but you can easily identify the look you crave. Have fun taking FOC’s design defining quiz and be one step closer to knowing what style you would like in your home. That said, FOC Design believes that your design preference should not confine you, since we find that many people reflect a mixture of influences. This quiz is just to steer you in the right direction and to start you thinking about with what style you really want to surround yourself. If your points total indicates that your tastes are borderline, do not fret - this merely highlights the fact that you prefer more than one genre and what is wrong with that? Lavish and Luxurious
There is no shame in enjoying the finer things in life. You can spot quality a mile off and appreciate the work and detail involved in making such items. Bespoke and unique pieces are a must in creating your perfect ambience and you enjoy the feel and textures of luxury fabrics. Stunning silks, crushed velvets and a mixture of sheens and textures dress your home and there is an elegance and flow to the house that speaks volumes about the quality you require and expect. Shabby chic
The shabby chic look is all about creating a bohemian, laid-back environment. Forget about twee and fussy, this look is relaxed and comforting. A style that is both warm and charming, full of worn, pre-loved objects and furniture, the key here is imperfection - it is that which makes this style of comfort work. Commonly mixed with an interesting ensemble of interiors, it combines the raw and pretty rough surfaces with clean, flat surfaces.

Retro
Your choice of style is varied and collectable. You make the past modern with your nostalgic eye for design. Look out for old industrial looking objects that are made from steel, metal or wood, preferably worn down, salvaged or recycled! Retro home decor is based on classic design principles, which still look stylish today.
|1-10 |
Contemporary
You’re all about light, space and function. Your décor must be straight lines or beautifully curved. A clean and simple design, which reflects the latest trends, is perfect for you. In your clutter free design, everything serves its purpose and we could all learn a lot from your ‘less is more’ way of thinking. Therefore you should avoid having lots of furniture or objects or at least be able to hide them in good, well thought out storage. The main concept behind your choice of décor is based largely on the space being honest, that’s why big open spaces work well for you. Lucky for you your contemporary style works with most, if not all, interior styles!

With panoramic views of Gibraltar, North Africa and the glittering Coastline, this property is located in the tranquil plains of the Marbella Club Golf Resort. It is truly one of a kind. The elite Marbella Club Golf Resort plays host to various palatial size homes but La Morera stands apart from these gated villas dotted throughout the golf course. First and foremost, its deep raspberrypink shade gives the property a distinctive look, this paired with the twenty foot high central window that leads up to a cupola ceiling where a Moorish lantern hangs means that La Morera looks and feels like a descendant of the formidable Alhambra Palace in Granada.
Owners Paul and Jan built the fourbedroom villa with two-bedroom guest apartment from scratch. ‘If I never enter another tile or curtain shop again, it would be too soon,’ laughs Paul who tells Features Editor Amber O’Shaughnessy that his wife Jan put a great deal of thought into every last fixture and fitting within the house to make it the dream property. It is true that La Morera is incredibly well thought out, from the colour-coordinated bedrooms which each have a very distinct feel, ‘this is the French bedroom’, Paul states proudly as we embark on a grand tour of the house, to the built in fridge in the master bathroom should you fancy a glass of champagne whilst getting ready for the evening. The whole property oozes design flare.
80
KEEP IT REAL In a synergy of old and new, La Morera boasts all the most up-to-date mod cons including built in music system which can pump out the same song in every room of the house (ideal for those mid-summer parties), as well as remote controlled central fireplace, under floor heating and electronic black out blinds throughout. Equally so, the villa exudes an ancient Golden Age-style spirit with its fountains, wine cellar and indoor pool tiled with original Sevilliana mosaics. This ‘hammam’ inspired swimming area also features star shaped glass panels in the ceiling so as the sun shines, its rays cast star shaped designs onto the pale blue water beneath. Simply magical. When asked what makes La Morera so special, its owners reply that it is a house that’s a home. This may sound strange, but so many of the sprawling villas that line the Costa del Sol have an air of ghostliness about them; they feel as though life has not seeped through the walls for decades. La Morera couldn’t be
further away from this. ‘We spend time in every room of the house’, says Paul, ‘the perfect proportions of the property mean that it has a homely feel while still retaining great style’.
Indeed the interior of the property has been meticulously sourced from countless countries throughout the world. The main fireplace is from Holland and the drinks cabinet from China, not forgetting the Portuguese solid wood dining table brought into the house by crane because of its sheer weight. La Morera continues to impress outside. Its gardens are like an exotic Garden of Eden made up of mango, avocado, fig and banana trees as well as jasmine, bougainvillea and jacaranda. It is when standing in the grounds of the property that it becomes apparent just how tranquil the spot really is. Only 20 minutes from Puerto Banus, yet surrounded by total silence and with a premier golf course and riding club on your doorstep, La Morera is in a golden location. Plus with plans already in place to build a luxury hotel and polo grounds nearby, this area is set to be on par with Sotogrande in the coming years. After 7 happy years spent at La Morera, Paul and Jan are ready to hand over their special paradise. ‘The initial architectural plans of the house were drawn by hand and the finished product was exactly as was envisaged – the property is a true delight’, Paul smiles. It’s highly significant name speaks volumes: according to Spanish tradition, planting a ‘morera’ or mulberry tree in a new site will bring good luck, we find it hard to believe that anybody could be anything other than delighted spending time in this magical property. VIS À VIS: New outdoor collection in teak by Piergiorgio Cazzaniga The dining set plays with vertical lines on the table and criss-cross upholstery on the dining chair, creating an original geometric combination.
A floating, modular seating landscape In this sofa collection, the teak platform appears to be floating. The sofa’s back and arm structures are invisible, because the cushions are on a bracket. This means the sofa looks great from whichever way you look at it. Moreover, you can attach a graphic border or practical tables to the platform. Apart from ergonomic seating comfort, the Vis à Vis sofa also offers a modular construction system in which you are the fashion designer. The system is very simple and with two different modules and two types of seating and back/ armrest cushions, you can be creative.

TORQUE TALK
Motoring author, racing driver and photo-journalist Ian Kuah reports on the Jaguar F-Type Coupe
The F-Type R Coupe is both beautiful and an inspirational steer 91
TORQUE TALK
T
he roads in the Llieda region, south of Barcelona, are one of Spain’s best-kept secrets. Fast and open across the plains, they turn narrow and sinuous as they climb into the mountains. Either way, they carry very little traffic and are the perfect place for putting the new Jaguar F-Type Coupe through its paces. Both the 3.0 litre V6-powered F-Type S Coupe and its 5.0 litre V8powered F-Type R Coupe sister are supercharged, but the R is quite a different animal from the S, and you soon realise that a wild animal is always lurking just below the surface. The difference is made even greater by the V8’s output hike of 55hp and 55Nm for the stiffer Coupe, over its 15kg heavier Convertible sister. The new numbers are a heady 550hp and 680Nm of torque. The V6 motors in the F-Type Coupe and F-Type S Coupe retain the 340hp and 380hp outputs of the Convertible respectively, as well as the standard mechanical limited-slip differential.
92
On the mountain roads that formed the middle part of our test route, where instinct would have most drivers reaching for the second forward ratio on the tighter bends, third always proved adequate in the V8 R. As a measure of the massive low end torque on tap, even accelerating out of tight bends on part throttle in third sometime brought a wiggle from the back end as the fat rear Pirelli’s were bested in their efforts to hold onto the tarmac. That is not to say that the F-Type Coupe lacks mechanical grip. In fact on both public roads and the very technical Motorland Aragon race circuit, the tenacious grip from the fat 255/35ZR20 and 295/30ZR20 Pirelli PZero rubber that comes standard on the R version never seems to run out in the dry. I was glad that Jaguar had specified the optional sports seats on their test cars as the sheer lateral forces that so easily built up required both the enveloping grip of these sports seats and me bracing myself against the footrest to resist the lateral acceleration.
TORQUE TALK
The way the V6 and V8 Coupe go off down the road is dramatically different.
Jaguar say that the 80-percent stiffer allaluminium Coupe bodyshell, which boasts a very impressive torsional rigidity of 33,000 Nm/degree of twist, has allowed them to further stiffen the spring and damper rates for even better handling and grip. Chief chassis engineer, Mike Gallery, told me that the spring and damper rates have been increased by 4.3 percent in front and 3.7 percent at the rear over the open version. Also, the electronic mapping for the Active Damping is different on the 1,650kg R Coupe. Despite being 15kg heavier, the Convertible has a slightly lower centre of gravity as the mass of its ragtop and electro-hydraulic folding mechanism sit closer to the ground.
The metal roof and hatchback with its large glass rear window are heavier, and if you specify the optional glass roof with its sliding panel, that adds a further 6.0 kg at the highest point of the car. In the final analysis, these differences, the optional trackday rubber on optional forged 20-inch alloy wheels, optional Carbon Ceramic Matrix (CCM) brakes that reduce unsprung weight by 21kg, and the active rear spoiler that creates 120kg of downforce at the rear, help the F-Type R Coupe achieve its impressive 7 min 39 sec Nurburgring lap time. The glass roof does look nice with certain paint colours such as white and silver, giving the impression of an even more extensive glasshouse. On the other hand,
the metallic red and orange cars looked good with their unbroken roofline seeming to articulate the sleek coupe shape in a more traditional way in these colours. From a practical point of view, the Coupe is the one to take on a long trip. While the Convertible is a willing driving partner on a cross continental jaunt, its small boot is a big minus. The 407-litre (315-litres to the parcel shelf) luggage bay of the Coupe, whose tailgate can optionally be powered, has no such restrictions. The way the V6 and V8 Coupe go off down the road is dramatically different. Unlike on the Convertible launch last year, there were no entry-level V6 cars in sight, so our six-cylinder experience was limited to the 380hp F-Type S model.
93
TORQUE TALK Jaguar are one of the last manufacturers to use supercharged motors, but the instant throttle response and potent shove in the back is a stark reminder of just how effective this branch of the forced aspirated family is when done properly. The supercharged V6 is a powerful and snappy unit, but its character is more one of efficiency than tugging at your heartstrings. Despite a mellifluous soundtrack and strong thrust from 380hp at 6,500rpm and 460Nm of torque from 3,500 to 5,000rpm, the V6 motor feels effective rather than inspirational. While it did everything I asked of it, it never made me want to clear a space in my garage. The chief difference in character between the two motors is the way they deliver their power. Where the V6 trots out its horses in a strong and linear fashion, but starts to feel a little breathless as you approach the redline, raw power seems to literally explode out of the V8 at the merest touch of the throttle. This engine feels born to run, and feels as if its internals are lighter than the V6’s. At first I thought it was the squarer bore x stroke ratio, but at 84.5 x 89.0mm, the V6 is only slightly under-square compared to the 92.5 x 93.0mm dimensions of the V8.
94
Another factor that makes the V8 the superior drivers’ car is the feeling that the V6’s spring and damper rates are not quite right. While the uprated suspension works perfectly on the V8-powered R model, it seems to have created an imbalance on the V6-powered S that I did not notice on the more softly suspended Convertible. The low speed secondary ride of the V6 S Coupe feels a tad too stiff on bounce mode, while the back axle feels like it could do with a 10 to 15-percent increase in rebound control coming off the top of cresting undulations at speed. The spring and damper rates of the V8powered F-Type R Coupe on the other hand are very well resolved, with the front and rear axles performing perfectly in synch with each other, and the power steering also nicely judged for the chassis turn-in rate. The electronically-controlled Active Differential; is totally seamless and unobtrusive in operation, and is vital to the R’s traction and ability to deploy its power effectively. Together with the bombastic character of the 550hp motor, this helps to delivers the kind of holistic driving experience
that puts a big grin on your face from the moment you press the Start button on the centre console. If a motor can be described as exploding into life, this is it. With the exhaust bypass valve in Sport mode, the four outlet pipes growl, snarl, spit and pop depending on your throttle position and engine revs. On full noise, the supercharged bent-crank V8 sounds like a NASCAR racer, and its amplified soundtrack bouncing off the cliff faces on the mountain roads is something any red-blooded car enthusiast would want to bottle for posterity. This motor’s partner in crime is the ZF eightspeed Quickshift automatic gearbox, which is similar to the unit used by BMW. Jaguar has got their control software absolutely spot-on, the V6 and V8 engines and this transmission working as a seamless partnership to deliver as rapid and smooth up and downshifts as anyone could want in a road car. While the driver has full control over the gear ratios via the steering wheel paddle shifters, it is worth noting that should you wish to select a ratio via the transmission tunnel mounted selector lever, this works the correct way in manual mode; forwards for downshifts and backwards for upshifts.
TORQUE TALK With the stiffer bodyshell allowing the suspension to work optimally, the F-Type R Coupe’s ability to deploy its not inconsiderable power and torque is incredibly rewarding for a good driver. While the 0-100km/h time of 4.2 sec, and the electronically limited 300km/h top speed are impressive, a mark of a potent and well-balanced car is manifest by the rapid cross-country pace you can achieve with seemingly little effort. The F-Type R Coupe is high up on that shortlist. In real world driving, its potent combination of 550hp at 6,500rpm and 680Nm of torque from 2,500 to 5,500rpm make for a car that can burble innocuously through villages in a high gear on a light throttle opening one moment, and then devour the tarmac in a controlled frenzy of ear candy and sheer g-force the next. This is the stuff that the most memorable Sunday morning drives are made of. Jaguar may have used the E-Type as the design inspiration for the F-Type, but that sleek 60’s icon has nothing on its V8-powered 21st Century descendant when it comes to raw speed and brutal
The chief difference in character between the two motors is the way they deliver their power.
95
TORQUE TALK character. The V8 is the quintessential mailed fist in a velvet glove, but be warned that the velvet is very thin. Out of the box, the F-Type R has the natural sportscar genes that its bigger, heavier and older XKR-S brother tries very hard to show it has. The difference is clear the instant you try and chuck the larger and heavier XKR-S around a racetrack where the F-Type feels so very much more in its element. Jaguar wanted to show us how effective their new Torque Vectoring system is both in terms of helping to balance the car attitude in turns as well as correcting understeer and oversteer situations beyond the normal ESP style intervention that drivers of late model cars are familiar with. It rained heavily towards the end of the track session, and with the Torque Vectoring system helping out on top of the familiar Active Differential that is part of the V8 package, progressive power slides were easy to catch and hold in the streaming wet conditions. As it is counter-intuitive for a trained driver to pile into bend too fast and lift off, my instructor told me to deliberately use the wrong line on a sprinkler wetted section of track, lift off the throttle suddenly and then apply full steering lock. The Torque Vectoring system works by applying braking to the requisite inside wheel to counter excessive under or oversteer, and in this case it pulled the back end round to counter the massive understeer induced by my sudden manoeuvre. Ultimately of course it is a question of how much room you have for the system to retreive the situation before you hit a kerb or some other fixed part of the landscape. It is an inescapable fact of life that while these modern safety systems are pretty fool proof, nothing is idiot proof!
96
On the subject of safety, as with the XK, Jaguar designed the F-Type Convertible before the Coupe. This is a good thing since the stiff floorpan and sills and bulkheads required to make a stable structure for the Convertible make for a Coupe with class leading structural rigidity. In this case, the aforementioned 33,000 Nm/degree is top of the class. We were told that a change in the US roll-over crash regulations for fixed roof vehicles occurred while the Convertible was still in its gestation period, but with no change in the roll-over standards for open cars. Where the previous regulations required a fixed roof vehicle to be able to support one and a half times its own weight on one side of the roof, the revisions now require the roof structure to support four times the cars static weight across the whole roof with just 120mm intrusion allowed. The result is the F-Type Coupe’s exceptionally strong roof structure,
which shares the same 62-degree front windscreen rake as the Convertible. Jaguar has done very well with the F-Type since the Convertible was launched last May. Apparently 75-percent of the cars sold have been conquest sales, and Jaguar fully expect the Coupe to achieve 90-percent conquest sales, and take up 60 percent of F-Type production. When I came away from the F-Type Convertible drive last year, I was left with the impression that the V6 S was the optimum model, with the 495hp V8 having probably a tad too much engine for most people. However, the even more powerful V8 Coupe is nicely rounded out by its stiffer structure and uprated suspension, and so the flagship F-Type R Coupe is my pick of the bunch by a country mile. Great car, great drive, great Jaguar! Local dealer is Salamanca.

he journey to Machu Picchu has become, in recent years, one of the most popular destinations for student back-packers and adventurous holidaymakers alike. When making your way to that popular Inca site it’s probably best to do it in as much style as possible, so why not take the Belmond Hiram Bingham or the Vistadome train, both operated by Perurail, and enjoy all the scenery on the way? The Vistadome train on the route to Machu Picchu has been recently remodelled to offer passengers a more pleasant trip. Clad in Vistadome’s distinctive blue and yellow, the train transports passengers in comfort. The seats have been upholstered in leather that does not heat, even when in direct sunlight and is used by manufacturers of the world’s most exclusive cars. There is also extra legroom between seats, a top-of-theline sound system, air-conditioning and heating. The panoramic windows help passengers to feel that they are part of the breathtaking landscape that can be viewed along the entire route. Peruvian cuisine is recently enjoying international popularity and to allow our passengers the pleasure of tasting it we have added local recipes and Andean ingredients to the Vistadome menu. A sample breakfast snack on the inbound route may include Andean fruit salad with elderberry coulis, Caprese-style sandwich with homemade huaro bread, Andean cheese, fresh tomatoes, basil and spinach, and cookies with chocolate from Quillabamaba. A sample teatime on the outbound route may include the typical causa, a dish of mashed potato with sautéed beef tenderloin, grilled vegetables and

Magnificent Heights I
n the heights of the Peruvian Andes lies the famous Inca city of Cusco. Located in an exclusive area of the historical centre, between the Main Square (Plaza de Armas) and the vibrant and artistic neighbourhood of San Blas is the beautiful and atmospheric Casa Cartagena Boutique Hotel & Spa. At only 10 minutes by car from the airport, this hotel offers the best location to explore the city because it is only a brief walk from the majority of Cusco’s attractions. Years of painstaking restoration have preserved the ancient house’s original design, which is now one of the most luxurious hotels in town and has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Casa Cartagena is a traditional Spanish colonial house, which rises over Inca walls in front of a small, attractive piazza and features 16 luxurious suites and the exquisite Inca-inspired Qoya Spa with treatments that will restore the most exhausted body to full health. Its welcoming restaurant, La Bodega de la Chola once inspired Pablo Neruda’s poetry and hosted Che Guevara’s bohemian nights. The hotel’s suites are imaginatively arranged around a beautiful patio and all rooms feature a private balcony with
a wonderful view of the main house, allowing guests to enjoy breakfast, a relaxing drink or a candlelit dinner within the comfort of their own suite and under the starry skies of Cusco City. Cusco is famous for its high altitude, which can cause some to suffer from mild altitude sickness. However, Casa Cartagena’s suites have been equipped with an Enriched Oxygen System from two sources, which means that guests quickly adapt to the city’s altitude. The first source is through an enriched oxygen dispenser positioned over the bed to help you adapt to rest properly. The second is a clinical oxygen dispenser, located in the wall next to the bed that can be absorbed through a breathing mask, absorbing the necessary amount of oxygen needed for effective acclimatization. The hotel has also a boutique that supports individual artists, artisans and cooperatives from different regions of Peru in order to boost their growth and development. The hotel’s management team selects high quality products from all over the country so that all guests can take home an authentic piece of Peruvian art.
On arrival you will be handed a complimentary glass of the world famous Pisco Sour, after which the staff will ensure that you enjoy every second of your stay. THE CUP that CHEERS
y 1725, the year in which the Order of the Bath was instituted, England was drinking a quarter of a million pounds of tea a year. Tea was still pronounced ‘tay’, so when in 1711 Alexander Pope wrote “The Rape of the Lock”, he still rhymed correctly when, tongue in cheek, he mentioned Queen
100
Anne’s habit of drinking spirituous liquors out of tea cups: Hear thou, great Anna, whom three realms obey, Dost sometimes counsel take and sometimes tea.
Louis XIV of France never touched the stuff; but then he didn’t drink coffee or chocolate either, although in old age he drank an infusion of sage and veronica for his health. Such infusions remain popular in France and, indeed, in Spain, but as the craftsmen of Sèvres began to produce exquisite porcelain
COSTA CUISINE based upon Chinese designs, tea began to make inroads into polite 18th century French society. It also made an appearance during this century in both the Netherlands and Germany, where the Kaffee-Konditorei served tea alongside coffee and chocolate to accompany the heavy pastries. The Russian aristocracy equally took to the beverage, followed by the merchant classes, who made considerable fortunes importing the leaves from China. When Tsar Alexander III gave a picnic, the portable samovar (a device which kept water constantly on the boil, with a teapot perched on top) was the size of a small carriage. The beverage was drunk with a spoonful of jam, or a sugar lump clenched between the teeth, to overcome the somewhat harsh flavour of over-brewed tea. The Russians, of course, had easy access to the markets of China, and tea was the national drink of that country. It was drunk at all hours and on all occasions, and people carried supplies of the leaves with them, so that they could have a brew whenever they felt so disposed. There was a health advantage in this. Most of the available water was polluted, and so the need to boil it was fortuitous. The Emperor Shen Nung always boiled his water, and when, in precisely 2737 BC, he
observed some leaves fall into his boiling pot he then drank the result, and so enjoyed the first cup of tea. He was not always so
lucky. Tradition has it that he tested 365 different herbs, and died from a toxic overdose.
thereafter tea would provide a stimulant to help keep students awake during meditation. Whichever story we would like to accept, it is certain that tea is indigenous to India, where it is able to thrive on poor acidic soil incapable of supporting other crops. When it finally arrived in China about the third century AD during the Han empire, it was instantly popular, and it was not long before we begin to find references to it in the tax returns of the country! This popularity was enhanced by the exploits of the poet Lu Yu (c733 AD) who spent six years in Houmen mountain at the Longgai monastery brewing tea for his master whilst studying. His knowledge of tea enabled him to take care of his fellow students’ health. To assist in this he often went into the surrounding countryside to gather tea and herbs, and on one occasion he stumbled upon a spring which was extremely clean and clear. When he brewed tea with this water, he found that the taste had greatly improved, and from then on he realised the importance of quality water in brewing tea. Taking his cooking pots and a water tank, Lu Yu set off round the country to demonstrate the correct methods of making tea. If, however, in China the offering of tea to guests is an ancient rite, in Japan it borders on being a religion. The Emperor Shōmu (701-756 AD) accepted the first bowl of tea in Japan from a party of visiting Buddhist monks in 729 AD. Given the imperial approval, tea plantations were established, and from the contemplative qualities of Zen Buddhism, the formalities
of Shintoism, and their own predilection for formality, the Japanese gradually developed the idea of the Teahouse as a place of harmony, worship and dignity. Here a particular form of tea is drunk. This is not the clear liquid which accompanies food or quenches the thirst, but a kind of soup whipped up from tea powder into a froth and drunk with great ceremony. “The guest will silently approach the sanctuary… Then he will bend low and creep into the room through a small door…this is intended to inculcate humility…quiet reigns with nothing to break the silence save the note of the boiling water in the iron kettle” (Okakura-Kakuzo “Book of Tea”)
It is to China that we owe the extraordinary proliferation of different varieties of tea. To a
tea aficionado these subtleties of taste are as important as vine varieties are to a wine buff. All tea comes from the same type of plant, but altitude, month of picking, handling, place on the bush (high or low), all play a part. Leaves altered by oxidation before drying produce black teas; leaves dried directly are green. For the true connoisseur two extra-fine blends of dessert tea exist: Tit-koon-yum and Tit-lo-hom (“Titter ye not!”). These are picked by trained monkeys gathering tiny leaves from the heights of tall plants. But give me good old ‘mouse trotting’ tea, thick and black any day! *
* To the uninitiated, ‘mouse trotting’ in Wales refers to the
fact that the tea should be of a sufficient consistency to enable a mouse to run across the surface
Another legend regarding the origins of tea relate to Bodhidharma (late 5th century BC) who, having failed in his mission to spread Zen Buddism in Southern China, travelled to a Shaolin Monastery in the north. After being refused admission (although he later taught martial arts to the monks) he lived in a nearby cave, where he faced a wall for nine years, not speaking for the entire time. After seven years, however, he fell asleep. Upon awakening, he was very angry with himself, and so cut off his eyelids to prevent a similar happening. As his eyelids hit the floor the first tea plants sprang up; and

This month SOCIETY MARBELLA took some time to meet The Boardwalk Team ahead of the exciting launch. So tell us a little bit about The Boardwalk? Howard: Casual beachside dining… a fantastic menu, with something for everyone, using the freshest and finest ingredients. Plus, you can’t beat the location - Marbella Paseo is always bustling and I never get tired of looking out over the sea. From the bar it is just the most amazing view. How did you decide on the pink colour scheme? Charley: We wanted something a little different. So many restaurants opt for the classic nautical colours but we wanted something a unique. The combination of beige, cream, mocha with touches of baby pink is amazing, I can’t want for everyone to see it, it is beautiful. What made you choose to support Positively Pink? Charley: We wanted to give something back and Positively Pink is such a worthy cause. Selecting a local

charity was really important to us; The Boardwalk and Positively Pink seemed the perfect partnership. What unique cocktails will you be offering? Nick: As well as all the classics we will also be offering skinny cocktails and speciality shots such as Amaretto Sunset and Chocolate Caramel Cookie, which are almost a cocktail in themselves. Tell us about your Afternoon Tea what made you decide to bring this classic English touch to Marbella? Kara: As Charley mentioned, we wanted The Boardwalk to have that unique quality and evoke elegance, hence classic Afternoon Tea because it seemed like a brilliant addition. I can’t think of anywhere else you can sit and enjoy traditional afternoon tea with view out over the Mediterranean. It is going to be really special.
What makes The Boardwalk special? Penny: I think it is that you can pop in for a Vanilla Latte and a freshly baked cake or a Fillet Steak and Lobster, whatever you fancy, you are sure to find something on the menu that appeals. I also really like the skinny options, there are not many places you can go and know there will be some fantastic healthy choices that still taste delicious! Tell us about your opening party? Charley: It is going to be amazing. Start looking for your pink or white dress now! Plus don’t forget to email us for an invitation!

QUAINT and Classy
New restaurant Momo brings South American flavours to the heart of Marbella’s Old Town with a fabulous fusion menu that will satisfy even the most demanding of foodies. We take a moment to interview the owners – Head Chef José and his wife, Katrin.
What menu is available at Momo? Here at Momo Marbella we welcome you to enjoy a fresh, fusion experience with gastronomy influenced by a mix of Asian and European tastes. Our Argentinean and Filipino chefs have a wealth of expertise, gained from global travels and getting to know products and people all across the world. What distinguishes us is that we mix flavours from Peru, Japan and Europe to create unique dishes that you may not have tasted before. For instance try our Caramelised Beef Salad in Sweet Honey Oyster Sauce and follow it with Teriyaki Salmon with Mango Apricot Sauce and Leaf Salad. Or try our special Ceviche with Mango and Papaya, then the French Duck on Oriental Vegetables with Orange Pomelo Sauce. Where do you source your ingredients? We work with really special produce from all over the world; we source our scallops from America, our king crab from Canada. I find that the quality of the final dish is a direct result of the ingredients that have gone into it, so I ensure we use only the very best. Describe the Momo atmosphere. Momo is my house, my home and where my heart is. I want clients to feel relaxed and at ease here, but first and foremost I
104
want them to leave feeling satisfied with the food we have served. I never think of the business aspect first, my main priority is the quality of the dishes. I want to deliver healthy, yet flavoursome combinations. Have you always worked in hospitality? Yes, I have had a passion for food ever since I can remember. I gained a name for myself working at Beckitt’s Marbella and The Playwright in Elviria so when we opened Momo, just over a year ago, many of my past clients visited the restaurant, confident in the knowledge that I produce high quality, tasty fare. My customers gave me a chance so I have to deliver. What can a client expect from a dining experience here? Clients will receive a warm and friendly welcome and a meal that includes dishes you will not see elsewhere in Marbella. Where have you ever seen Grilled Rib Eye with Whiskey Mushroom Blue Cheese Sauce and Mash on a menu - or Chocolate Fondant with a Melty Heart of Ferrero Roche? Our staff share the same passion for food that I have, so you can expect them to make recommendations and guide you through the menu.
How is Momo different from other restaurants in the area? I would say that Momo is unique in that it does not feel stuffy or pretentious like a lot of the restaurants in the area yet it still delivers top quality cuisine. We offer real food in good-sized portions, which is also creative and flavoursome. Also, my wife Katrin and I are here in Momo every single day so we are not distanced from the restaurant, which I think is very important. As the owners of Momo we want to be close to our clients, hearing their feedback and continually looking for ways to improve. Finally, what is the significance of the name, Momo? Momo is a fantasy novel, which we often read to our daughter who is two years old. We decided to use this as the name for the restaurant because she is the inspiration behind all that we do. Also, the story is a statement on consumerism and stress; we want to invite people to step away from these trials and tribulations of everyday life and come into our restaurant for a short time where you can find exquisite plates combining flavours in a way you never thought possible! flavour work-out couple of decades ensuring that he has the best suppliers of local produce on speed dial. Lee’s obsession with using organic ingredients whenever possible led to him opening his own organic restaurant some years ago and you can be sure that the same care and attention goes into every dish at Umami.
possible. A select range of options means that Lee and his staff are easily able to ring the changes and offer seasonal dishes and a tempting variety of specials to keep regulars returning week after week.
While casual visitors are probably lured by the restaurant’s odd name (which represents the fifth taste category, alongside sour, bitter, sweet and salty) and its smart, stylish exterior, we know that most of the locals are mostly there because they are fans of Lee Varhos’s cuisine.
“Recognizing the power of umami helps us understand our cravings. It also helps explain why we crumble cheese on a roasted beet and rocket salad or why we add a dollop of tomato paste to the base of a stew or why we splash soy sauce in a stir-fry. They all make a meal more satisfying,” explained Lee as he showed us to our table and handed us copies of the menu.
which was light, fresh and tasty; just the thing to get the taste-buds racing but leaving us ready for more of Umami’s signature flavours.
It might seem a little rude to refer to this chef extraordinaire as a local institution, but that most accurately describes Lee’s history as one of the Coast’s most respected restaurateurs. This is a man who has a real passion for good food and has spent the past
A well-planned menu can speak volumes about the skill and experience of a restaurateur and Umami’s is a real work of art. The dishes sound as alluring on the page as they do in reality and there really is something for everyone, yet Lee has kept things as simple as
aving become firm fans of Umami when it was located in La Colonia, we decided to visit the latest premises in the heart of San Pedro de Alcántara. Conveniently situated opposite the Autovia del Mediterráneo, Umami remains a very popular place for both lunch and dinner and we were grateful
that we had popped in before the summer crowds descended.
106
We started with a special Sushi Sashimi Plate from the restaurant’s Sushi Bar,
To follow this we tried the superb Tom Yum Salad, which consisted of Prawns cooked with Sweet and Sour Thai Sauce, Soba Noodles, Raw Peanuts and Coriander. One of the things that you can guarantee when you eat at any of Lee Varhos’s restaurants is that every dish will have been created to produce not just great flavours, but interesting and varied textures; it will also look sensational on the plate. These three aspects were certainly true of the Tom Yum Salad and we all dived in enthusiastically.
COSTA CUISINE
Next up was the amazing Chistorra, a chorizo from Navarra, which was served with a mouth-watering Sweet Chilli Sauce. Now this was sausage with a kick and it certainly won rave reviews from the Society Marbella team. Lee introduced the Moroccan Spring Roll with Chicken, Almonds and Salad as “an Umami creation” and it certainly is representative of this talented chef’s ability to take an old favourite and recreate it using a new, quirky twist. To misappropriate an old Trekkie quote, “It’s a spring roll, Jim – but not as we know it!” The Moroccan flavours were wonderfully authentic, thanks to the Ras el Hanout spice mix and this was another dish that quickly disappeared without trace. Lee is very fond of the Miguel de Cervantes quote, “The best sauce in the world
is hunger” so he must have been delighted by our greedy response to his dishes. Just a brief glance at the menu reveals a great deal about Lee’s cultural and culinary background: Turkish born but raised in Sweden, he has a firm handle on Scandinavian favourites and eastern Mediterranean flavours. We couldn’t help noticing the Haloumi Cheese (with Grilled Haloumi, Oregano, Hazelnuts and Pomegranates) and the Stockholm (with Smoked Salmon, Smoked Salmon Oil and Eggs) Salads, which offer an insight into Lee’s main areas of interest. If you are bored by the standard options of ice cream or ‘flan’ served at
many traditional restaurants, then you will have even more reasons to love Umami, which serves some memorable desserts. We loved the Turkish Delight Panacotta with Rosewater and Strawberries and the Chocolate Truffles with Four Flavours were outstanding. Like the other parts of the menu, the dessert section changes frequently and always includes some crowdpleasing favourites. Like every other venture with which he has been involved, Umami brilliantly showcases Lee Varhos’s personal philosophy, lively imagination and abiding love of food. We can honestly say that we have loved every one of Lee’s restaurant
and Umami is the latest triumph in a long line of successes. Umami Av. Mediterráneo Edif. San Pedro del Mar. San Pedro de Alcántara T. 952 780 114

Albariño
Julio César Garcia Valdés is a Sommelier at unique wine bodega and fine dining restaurant, D-wine. Here he gives SOCIETY MARBELLA a special insight into what makes Albariño such an exquisite wine label and nominates his Top 10 unmissable Albariño bottles. D.O Rias Baixas is located in the northwest corner of Spain; the area takes its name from the five rías (flooded river valleys) that form estuaries along the coast. The famous legend in Spanish culture says that the rías were formed once God had finished creating the world and placed his hand in Galicia to rest; his fingers dug into the ground and the rías were formed. Albariño is the main white grape in Rías Baixas, in style it is a perfect “assemblage” of the German Riesling, the French Viognier and the Italian Pinot Grigio. The wines from Albariño are consistently pleasant, dry and refreshing, fish and seafood friendly, with a fruity, citrus flavour, floral freshness and a saline character. Since Albariño has a natural minerality, Atlantic influence and attested aging potential, many wine producers are beginning to explore even greater possibilities of this multi-faceted wine. Consequently, a new style of Albariño wine is evolving from old vines, which is medium plus in body and elegantly powerful. Top producers are currently experimenting with barrel fermentation and lengthy ageing over the lees before bottling. The result is a wine with vibrant juicy flavours, more moderate acidity, layered complexity and a mineral backbone that no wine geek could afford to miss. This is the case in the following recommended Albariños:

and then he asked me to marry him - my response was a mixture of laughter and tears, and of course, I said ‘Yes!’.
Bhavesh and Rajvi enjoyed a magical three day celebration filled with fun, family and friendship.
MEANT TO BE…
We were young, crazy and care free at 17 years old. We knew of each other through friends and in the few times we would bump into each other I would sometimes get a wink and a smile and he would get a little wave back. Who would have known that 17 years later, I would be married to him!
apart and we became quite busy in our own lives but we would call each other now and again over the years just to catch up until one day we decided to meet, enjoying each others company so greatly we began to spend more and more time together before falling completely and utterly in love.

Two years later, we had been well acquainted with each other’s family and friends and we had been on a few holidays together and we were definitely ready to take the next step in our relationship. It was just a case of him popping the question. Last September we
went to Cuba and that was where Bhavesh proposed to me. We were on a tiny island off the south coast of Cuba and on our last night on the island (we were due to fly to Varadero the next day to continue our holiday), Bhavesh had booked us a table at a restaurant. When we arrived, I was surprised to see that he had arranged for us to dine in a private cabana that was beautifully decorated with candles, flowers and white curtains that were softly blowing in the breeze. During our meal, we were serenaded with beautiful Spanish love songs. At this point he told me that he did this for me
because he loved me and he just wanted to say thank you for being such an amazing girlfriend and so I still had no clue what he was about to do.
It was after dinner when Bhavesh suggested that we go for a walk on the beach. As we walked towards the sea, I was holding on to him and walking with precaution as it was dark with only the moonlight to guide us, and the deck that led to the rocks above the shore had large enough gaps for my stilettos to become wedged in! When we arrived at the beach, the moonlight hit the waves that were rolling onto the sand - we just stood there in awe of the scenery. We held each other tight and reminisced about the amazing times we had been through together over all the years we had Michknown ael and each other. We went back to our table where we finished off our champagne, when Bhavesh told me he had another surprise for me! What could possibly be better than this? I thought he may have booked us in for a spa day or he would take me shopping… No. He had booked us both in for a skydive! Fancy being proposed to and then kicked out of a helicopter at 12000 ft... romantic at first, daringly devilish to end.
I knew I wanted a traditional Hindu wedding with a twist of vintage and regal attire. Dianna from Party People and the team at Beau Rivaaaj ensured that the setting was just that and the planning was impeccable. The mandap was decorated with beautiful fabrics and hanging ornaments. It looked exquisite with traditional but subtle colours. The large pillars surrounding the amphitheatre were draped with beautiful images of Lord Ganesh. For the blessing ceremony, Dianna had stripped away the colours and left a beautiful plain white chuppah that was complemented by the surroundings of the Roman Stone amphitheatre. The ivory and soft pink flowers paired with our outfits made a perfect combination against the sunlight and the greenery.
ALL I EVER WANTED AND MORE…
The wedding planning begun almost immediately after we had returned back to the UK. I had always dreamt of an outdoors wedding, with beautiful scenery and romance. I already knew that this would be the theme throughout. We decided to marry in Spain as we both travelled there often. Spain has always been a destination close to home and close to my heart... the ambience, the people, the laidback attitude, the weather and climate.... we had to get married in Spain!
I wanted a wedding with a difference and I loved the idea of our closest friends and family all coming to celebrate our wedding abroad and also enjoying a holiday at the same time. We decided to have a three day event, with the first being the mendhi night. The second day was a leisure day at the Crowne Plaza Estepona with golf and spa in the morning, a pool party in the afternoon and a dinner in the evening and the last day was our big day - with the Vedic Hindu ceremony in the

Spring 2014 is an exciting time for brothers Albert and Simon who own the restaurant of the same name in San Pedro. Albert & Simon has undergone a complete refurbishment, the first of its kind since the restaurant opened back in 2000. The brothers have always been great advocates of change and growth, constantly updating their menu and the dishes on offer, but this specific change has transformed the entire look of the restaurant. The only feature to remain the same is the impressive wine cellar, which will continue to offer clients some of the finest wines from around Spain and the rest of Europe. Aside from the changes in interior design, Albert & Simon have also introduced a new menu of ‘mini dishes’. Similar to tapas in size but boasting some deli-

cious flavour combinations, plates such as Prawn Carpaccio with Apple and Raspberry Vinaigrette and Foie Gras with Balsamic Glaze are particular favourites. Functioning as a kind of taster menu, guests are invited to indulge in as many dishes as they desire. Albert and Simon Benisty are no strangers to the world of gastronomy, in fact a passion for cuisine has run in the family for over four decades – the widely acclaimed Le Soufflé in Estepona was owned by the family and awarded one of the first Michelin stars in Southern Spain. Bringing rich history together with a flair for the new, we are sure that brothers Albert and Simon will continue to dominate in their field for many years to come.

LA SALA OPENING IN THE UK

La Sala has announced it will be opening in the UK with James Horler as Chairman. One of the hospitality industries most well-known characters, James raised £28m to buy tapas chain La Tasca in 2001, which he then went on to sell for a staggering £130m in 2007. “I am really excited about this opportunity as La Sala is a totally different concept and the right brand to bring to the UK at this time,” explained Horler. Last month, James headed to the flagship La Sala in Puerto Banus for a meeting with the Project Manager and Interior Designer for the new UK venture. During the visit Horler explained, “I wanted to ensure the design team embraced the entire La Sala experience to enable them to recreate the essence that makes La Sala so unique in the UK.” From humble beginnings as a kitchen porter James then went on to work with THF Hotels and Granada Hospitality, during which time Horler was acknowledged as one of the industry’s future leaders earning the
138
Acorn Award for high achievers under the age of 30. He then went on to triumph with Frankie and Benny’s and La Tasca before getting involved with La Sala. “The La Sala brand already has international recognition, celebrity style status and is a firm favourite with Britons who holiday in Southern Spain,” explained Horler. “We are aiming to bring a little bit of sunshine to (the UK) transferring the La Sala blend of atmosphere, quality, exceptional service and value that is part of the proven formula for success. We’re planning to roll out two sites in the first 12 months with a third to follow, maybe in West London. It’s great timing for this type of brand.”
La Sala Limited has already attracted the attention of footballers, Arsenal & England’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Leeds’ Michael Brown and Bournemouth’s Ian Harte as well as Sky Sports presenter Jeff Stelling and astute businessman Mike Armstead. With negotiations well underway for the first site to open in the South of England later this year, no doubt La Sala will become… ‘the place to be,’ on UK shores, in no time. lasala.co.uk

HERE, THERE AND EVERYWHERE The Costa del Sol has been Europe’s favourite holiday destination for a number of reasons not least its fabulous climate, excellent infrastructure and world class golf courses. However, on arriving it’s comforting to know that there’s someone waiting at the airport to whisk you away to your hotel or holiday home. This is where Simply Shuttles steps in; this go-ahead company has been offering a fast, efficient and reasonably priced service to visitors for some time. Clients take great comfort from having a pre booked service and a booking confirmation.Whether you arrive in Málaga or Gibraltar, the friendly team will take you where you want to be. Contemplating a golfing holiday with the boys – or with the girls, come to that? Simply Shuttles can take care of all your transportation requirements, collecting you from the airport when you arrive and ferrying you and your party to and from your courses of choice then making sure you arrive back at the airport in plenty of time for your flight home. Now their fastest growing service is their restaurant transfer service. Dedicated drivers with excellent knowledge of all the best areas are available to take you, your family and friends to the Coast’s hottest venues.
As well the older established hotspots of Marbella and Puerto Banús there is a growing demand for transportation to Benahavís and San Pedro, although Simply Shuttles caters for clients all along the coast. Company founder Jonathon Snell commented, “We see demand improving with the introduction in June of new drink driving laws.”
Thanks to a colleague who recently used Simply Shuttles to do several transfers for her family when they visited last month we can now personally recommend their services. Their constantly updated fleet of vehicles offers clients the experience of being driven in spacious, air-conditioned comfort and the drivers are, at all times, prompt, knowledgeable, friendly and – luckily for our colleague - patient.

EGG-CELLENCE AT BSM Youngsters showed off their creative talents during an Easter bonnet parade at The British School of Marbella this month. Dozens of children aged between two and nine entered the competition while parents watched the show in the school hall. Teachers also took part in the event that saw judges award chocolate Easter eggs for the most egg-cellent bonnets. Headteacher Sian Kirkham, said: “The bonnets this year were spectacular, the judges had a real tough job on their hands. Well done to everyone who took part, the originality and creativity was outstanding.” For more photos of the bonnets visit: facebook.com/britishschoolofmarbella

GALA DINNER AT THE COURTYARD
My name is Rudy. I was hit by a car and lay on the road for two days before help arrived. I was then taken to the dog pound, a place I didn’t like very much. Thankfully somebody was looking over me, as two young girls spotted me and raised the money to release me and cover the cost of my operation. Sadly they couldn’t keep me, but I still didn’t lose hope. Finally Jacqui Ross from Last Chance Animal Rescue arranged for me to be looked after in a foster home. I am not even two yet, so I am very active and enjoy long walks. I would need a little time and training as I currently live with 30 other rescue dogs, so I can’t be given the attention that I need. I love dogs, cats and children and I am desperate for cuddles and am so eager to please. I have a passport and can travel anywhere in Europe. I just want someone to love me and I promise I will never let them down. For more information on Rudy please contact: Mary: Tel. 610 725 422 or email karacaradas@yahoo.com

IT’S GETTING HOT IN HERE! Approximately 40 yoga devotees were the first to experience the benefits of one of the world’s fastest growing exercise trends - hot yoga, at the Open Day of Radiant Yoga Marbella, this month. Radiant Yoga Marbella is an exciting new yoga studio in the heart of Marbella. The light and spacious purpose-built studio now open for business - is unique in the area. Owned and managed by well-known multi-lingual yoga teachers and health professionals, Radiant Yoga Marbella offers a complete programme of yoga classes six days a week. Significantly, it is the first yoga facility in the area to offer Hot Yoga, widely considered to be one of the most effective yoga disciplines in terms of boosting health and fitness levels. The specially conditioned studio features inviting bamboo flooring, fulllength windows with views to La Concha mountain, and state-of-the-art infrared panels that direct heat to the body rather than the room. Reaching a temperature of approximately 36 degrees, and 50 per cent humidity, the pervading heat facilitates the yoga postures. Offering myriad health benefits, Hot Yoga now available at Radiant Yoga Marbella allows students greater flexibility to ease more deeply into the yoga postures. Exercising at a higher temperature elevates the heart rate,
144
making hot yoga a more vigorous workout, while the heat intensifies the detoxifying and calorie-burning elements of the yoga class. The mental effects are similar to “jogger’s high” thanks to the release of pleasure-giving endorphins.
Welcoming with Open Arms To celebrate the launch, the three founders of Radiant Yoga Marbella, Lori Sjollema, Ariane Pieper and Marjan Looije threw open the doors to their bright and dynamic studio to invite the public in to enjoy a range of yoga classes free of charge. Throughout the day yoga devotees and new converts sampled Vinyasa, Anusara and hot yoga classes, as well as kid’s yoga, shopping for yoga clothes, while healthy drinks and snacks were served on the solarium terrace. Many people signed up for the excellent introductory offers on class rates. Founded on the mantra “strength, health and vitality”, Radiant Yoga Marbella is serious about providing a yoga experience to enhance people’s lives. Contact Radiant Yoga online or by telephone to check out the timetable for classes and register for a session, as spaces are limited. Radiant Yoga Marbella, Urb.
