Marvelous Marbella

A

fter what has been SOCIETY’s busiest summer on record, we thought that September might bring with it a return to some semblance of normality – but no! It looks like Marbella is well and truly on the up and, as more businesses are taking off and the office phone is ringing off the hook, it seems that there’s no rest for the wicked! We’ve been working around the clock to bring you a truly outstanding art and culture inspired issue of Society that encompasses all that is great about Marbella.

From painter to builder, we meet one of the busiest and hardest working developers on the coast. John May of Quay Property Group has been building beautiful homes for the residents of Marbella for the best part of a decade and he looks set to continue for decades more to come…

We talk to our cover star, Mikael Segelström, owner of Puerto Banus’ Timeless Gallery, as well as galleries in Sweden, Poland and Miami. At only 24 years old, Mikael’s passion for art, love of Marbella and philanthropy make him one of the most fascinating and captivating personalities in town – epitomising all that is elegant, cool and classy about Marbella.

Padre Peter brings us a beautiful history of music and dance of Andalucia and Dr Ian Kuah takes the racy Maclaren 675LT for a spin. Of course we’ve got all the usual fashion, food reviews and events, as there’s been no shortage of parties this month and SOCIETY has been in attendance at all of them!

We also visit the marvellous atelier, showroom and gallery of local artist, Alejandro Hermann. Recognisable throughout the town for his abstract, modern art, as well as his stunning portraits in particular “Chocolate” (the child with the big eyes), Hermann is a modest Marbella celebrity, who shares with us his undying fondness for this town.

Of course we saw the Marbella Art Fair take the town by storm, and with artists flying in from all corners of the globe, this fantastic new event looks set to put Marbella on the map in the art world as Art Basel has done for Miami.

From parties and revelry to art and culture, Natalie Rose Kern rounds up all that that is beautiful and unique about Marbella. Take a read and I’m certain you’ll agree. Enjoy! Until next time… Andy Clark

Timeless An Interview with Mikael Segelström of Timeless Galleries

Interview by Eleanor McKenzie Photos by Irene Sekulic Male Grooming: Nicola McGeorge using Clinique and Oribe

I

t’s fairly unusual to meet an art gallery owner born in 1991. Plus, Mikael Segelström doesn’t just have one art gallery; in addition to Timeless in Puerto Banús, he owns ones in Sweden and Poland, and is about to open another exhibition space in the Wynwood district of Miami. It will open at the end of November, just in time for Art Basel Miami. He gives me a shy little smile as he says it, revealing his obvious delight in the success of his plans and his perfect sense of timing. Mikael was born outside Stockholm and then moved to Malmö. His mother had an art gallery and he spent most of his childhood with her there. Does she still have a gallery, I ask him? Yes, she has one in Trelleborg. He also reveals that he opened his first art venture, near his mother’s in Malmo. I asked him at what age he started working. He laughed and replied “At age four.” Then he added, “I never work: this is not work to me, this is my passion. I’m just following my passion every day.”

20

“I never work: this is not work to me, this is my passion. I’m just following my passion every day.”

Marbella and Love But, I’m here to talk to Mikael about the gallery on Avda José Banús and the obvious first questions I ask is “Why Marbella?” Mikael responds enthusiastically, “Well, first of all it’s cosmopolitan. There are a lot of people here from different countries and they have the taste and cultural education to enjoy art. Plus, Marbella is so sunny and beautiful; it’s a town of sun, happiness and love! “ ‘Love’ is a word that Mikael uses frequently, but not in a carelessly casual way. ‘Love’ is the driving force of everything that he does. He has an emotional intelligence that in some part has come from his mother, but he is undoubtedly his own man, and his passions are the product of his unique mind and heart.

Artist Relationships And talking about the heart comes easily to him. He told me, “I bring my heart when I’m choosing artists.” For example, when I ask him about the artists that he exhibits, he talks about them as family who he loves. The artists are not just commodities in a commercial venture; they are humans who speak to Mikael’s heart. He is particularly fond of Swedish artist Peter Mandl, who he has known since he was a child. His love for Mandl the man, and for the artist’s work, is touchingly clear. Mikael explained how his relationship with Mandl had developed from childhood: “He always talked to me as if I were an adult and about feeling for art. He taught me that.” When I ask him if he had a choice of any artist he could exhibit, he immediately responds “Peter Mandl.” What about artists that are no longer living, I press him? He thinks for a moment and replies: “Dali, but I can’t really say because I haven’t met him. It’s important that I have a relationship with the artist” But then talks about what he would feel if one of his artists died and the intense feelings and memories he would have if he had exhibited them… and the conversation returns once again to Peter Mandl. It’s clearly important to Mikael that he has a relationship with the artists he exhibits.

The Marbella Art Market Can Marbella support an art market, I wonder? He responds very confidently that it can. In fact, he feels that what Marbella needs is more art galleries right now. We discussed the fact that, until galleries like Timeless opened, a lot of the ‘art’ on

21

sale in Marbella has been aimed at the interior decoration market; the kind of art that is bought to match a colour scheme. Mikael points out that this is not a fault of the people of Marbella. He is optimistic that if more diverse examples of work are available in galleries, then people will start buying art because they love the art itself. He believes the current visitors are not just here for the sun, they are also coming for the culture - and that includes visiting galleries. He also agrees with me that in a few years the new Art Marbella fair can do for Marbella what Art Basel has done for Miami.

The Secret Villa

In the two years and three months that the gallery has been open, he has built up a substantial number of collectors in the area. Separate to his private residence, he also has a villa in the Benahavís area, which is decorated with work by artists he shows in the gallery. Collectors fly in to stay at this ‘secret villa’ so that they can experience living with the art. It’s a genius idea, and shows that Mikael also has an exceptional business mind to match his artistic sensibility.

The Mutomo Project

His passion extends to philanthropy as well. He knows that he has been very fortunate in life and he is very serious about his charitable work with the Rotary Club’s Mutomo project. He explained to me that when he was looking for a humanitarian project to get involved with, he talked to Rotary Clubs in Sweden because he respects the work the organisation does generally. Mutomo is a very poor area of Kenya and the project focuses on supplying clean, drinking water, schools and a sustainable development strategy.

Art and Wedding Gifts

He is also venturing into the wedding market. I mention his promotion for the gallery in CONFETI magazine that says, “Where you invest your love, you invest your life.” “If you were giving a gift from your gallery to a friend, which of the works would you choose?” I ask him. “For me, a wedding is all about the woman who is getting married, so I’d choose something that celebrates her. There are some beautiful sculptures in the

22

gallery right now that capture the essence of the female form in a variety of styles; that’s what I’d choose. One of Peter Mandl’s sculptures would be my choice.” Indeed, Mikael has selected several feminine pieces to exhibit in Timeless Gallery Marbella that range from the contemporary urban style of Scottish artist David Begbie’s “Snude” to Peter Mandl’s bronze “Winter Queen.” There are other female-form inspired sculptures as well, and Mikael smiles when I mention this, and explains it simply: ”I like the female form, it’s the shape I like to look at, so that’s what I have in my galleries.” I note that he is taking the work of Israeli-born, Marbella-based artist Nimrod Messeg to Sweden. Nimrod’s studio is in Marbella and his sensational metal sculptures are sought after internationally. Nimrod’s female torsos may be sculpted in metal, but he makes it look like the softest lace and there’s a spun glass delicacy and eroticism to his work. Mikael says that he fell in love with Nimrod’s work and feels that taking it to Sweden is better than exhibiting it in Marbella for the moment. It has been fascinating spending time with someone so passionate about art and I ask him if he has one message that he’d like to share with the people of Marbella. Mikael responds enthusiastically, “Visit art galleries and museums and cultural events at every opportunity you can. Looking at art changes your life; it wakes you up and gives you peace with your soul.” Drop into Timeless and enjoy the wonderful selection of art on show. Mikael will be thrilled if you experience the pleasure and passion he feels every day at ‘work’! timelessgalleryart.com

The REAL

Life in Marbs “L

ove it or loathe it” begins every article reviewing the UK’s latest reality TV show ‘Life on Marbs,” so I’m not going to love it or loathe it. Firstly because a handful of my friends, acquaintances (and clients!) are stars of the television show and I don’t want to be crossed off any Christmas lists, (or out of a job!) but chiefly because I don’t have English television and haven’t actually watched it yet! I have read the reviews though and, from what I can gather in the press and in good old social media, it’s getting a raw deal and poor old Marbella is taking quite a bashing. I’ve received messages and emails from friends in England asking incredulously; “Is this what it’s like where you live?” referring presumably to the champagne-spraying, 24-hour partying, gregarious, vacuous, plastic-fantastic lifestyle portrayed on the show.

Oh! Marbella, Marbella, Marbella…once famed for its elegant Marbella Club Hotel,

the pretty marina of Puerto Banús and its stylish jet-set crowd that included Hollywood celebrities, international playboys and European royalty, is now associated with fake boobs, drunken stag weekends, bimbos, gold diggers, ex-footballers and an extravagant waste of champagne!

24

As September arrives, we reclaim our town and celebrate the beauty and magnificence of Marbella. By Natalie Rose Kern

“Why on earth are you all showering yourselves in champagne over there?” my friends ask me, and frankly I don’t have an answer. What I can tell them though, is that what makes this town so unique and exceptional is that whether you shower in champagne or not, no one cares!

The people of Marbella are a breed of their own: from all corners of the globe and from all walks of life, we are a beautiful, diverse, eccentric and colourful melting pot of nationalities, cultures and backgrounds.

In the Society office alone our birth towns span five continents, and together we speak a fabulous fourteen languages! On any given day we all chat in a ridiculously humorous form of Spanglish and, whether we’re ordering breakfast or posting a parcel, the scattering of English words in Spanish sentences (and vice versa) never ceases to amuse me. Are we as ludicrous and flamboyant as they say we are? Well, perhaps! And why not! For the rules of normal life don’t apply in Marbella! One can go out for lunch dripping in diamonds and fur and no one will blink an eye - even if it is 40 degrees outside! You can go to a party on a Friday night and not return home until Sunday, and the term

‘smart-casual’ is one that most of us Marbellís fail to comprehend, and usually ignore! At any functions we attend, the diversity of fashion

and the inimitable Marbella style mean that bigger is better, and whether it’s hair or heels, glamour is what we do. And we do it well. Stilettos are suitable attire

for a beach party and one should always blow-dry one’s hair for the pool! Ok, ok, we’re not all this glitzy (I have neither the time nor the patience for this level of grooming) but some of my Russian friends here truly look like they’re heading onto a catwalk every day. And we don’t all have big boobs (not me, much to my dismay!) or perfect teeth, hair and nails, but there is something we all have in common…and that is our love of NOW! September! As September arrives in Marbella you can almost hear a collective sigh of relief as we reclaim our town.

The tourists depart, the traffic diminishes, the heat subsides, the queues lessen and it’s glorious!

There’s a beautiful tranquillity about the town and, whether it’s regaining your favourite spot in your local restaurant, not having to wait half an hour for a taxi or popping into Supercor for a bottle of milk without having to

queue behind a party of holidaymakers who are bagging up their weekly shop and squabbling as they count out their euros – the relief is palpable. Even the most resolute of businessmen, whose livelihood depends on Marbella’s

busy summer season cannot deny the genuine respite and welcome reprieve that September brings. Life returns to normal, well, as normal as it ever gets in in this town, and we can once again enjoy Marbella’s magnificence… and I do not use that term lightly; it is magnificent!

have I not yet mentioned the sunsets? For I have seen the sun set all over the world and few places compare to the views we a blessed with here. Whether in the height of summer when the sun descends, showering us with golden light as we are still bathing on the beach, or in November, when the sky turns pink and La Concha is illuminated in an orange glow as the sun drops behind Gibraltar, Marbella’s sunsets never fail to make me smile. Within minutes of the hustle-bustle of the coast you can be in any number of pretty whitewashed mountain villages.

We’re even blessed with magnificent roads, and the one to Ronda is often listed among the finest roads to drive in the world. Whether you’re speeding down it in a Ferrari, or burning rubber round the bends on a motorbike, as the sea appears on the horizon and you near the coast, it’s one of the prettiest sights I’ve seen. On Christmas day, join every other family in Marbella for a jovial walk along the Paseo Maritimo as children show off their new bike, scooter or skateboard in a chaotic cacophony of laughter, screams and delight. Dine

In spring you can be speeding down the slopes of Sierra Nevada in the morning, and sipping cocktails on the beach at sunset…

You can climb to the top of La Concha Mountain and observe the length of the coast to Gibraltar and take in Africa on the horizon. You can head to any number of fantastic beach bars and restaurants and devour anything from lobster and caviar to fish and chips. You can dine in the prettiest Andalusian eatery in the Old Town of Marbella, or enjoy a full English roast in a pub. You sail on the ferry from Puerto Banús to Marbella’s old port and appreciate the town from the sea or you can max out your credit card at any number of Banús’ luxury designer boutiques, for the small marina is home to them all and offers a shopping experience to rival Old Bond Street. You can run, jump, climb and swim the beautiful Benahavís river walk, which is undoubtedly one of the prettiest spots for adrenalin junkies and nature enthusiasts alike. In spring you can be speeding down the slopes of Sierra Nevada in the morning, and sipping cocktails on the beach at sunset… and wait,

From Mijas to Casares, the interesting architecture, stunning scenery and superb views are a breath of fresh air and a delightful break from the town. Then there are the cork and pine forests, plus some of the most exotic and interesting wildlife can be found in the foothills of the mountain ranges around Marbella. Wild boar run amok along with foxes and lynx…. and the lakes! Venture only fifteen minutes up the Istán road and find yourself in another world entirely as the imposing Istán lake appears before you and time stands still. Cross the length and breadth of it by rowing boat on a winter’s afternoon, or splash about in it whilst picnicking with friends in summer.

on the beach, dance under the stars, swim, walk, run – the sun is nearly always shining

and the beautiful people are smiling as they walk their dogs by the sea or sip wine on the terrace of a café. There are art galleries, exhibitions, boutiques and bistros, nightclubs that don’t turf you out until the sun is up and 24-hour restaurants where you can have breakfast (or a steak!) on your way home from a night out. Palm trees line the avenues and bougainvillea colours the streets. We can pick lemons, oranges and avocados from our gardens and we can lie in the swimming pool at midnight. Yes, we drink wine at 11am and cold tomato soup around the clock, and perhaps our clothes are too loud and we party too hard but we love our life! It might not all be champagne spraying and ‘Life on Marbs’ fabulousness but it’s life in Marbella and it is fabulous. So when people ask me why I live here… this is what I’ll tell them!

A HOT DATE With

Art By Eleanor McKenzie

“Marbella is the hottest spot in the Euroapean summer and it is a multicultural city.”

A

lejandro Zaia has a good eye: Marbellís may say that he has a great eye. Why? Because, this is the man who brought the Art Marbella fair to town for four fabulous days in July and August 2015. The modern and contemporary art fair was hosted at Marbella’s Palacio de Congresos, which was transformed into a temple to 20th and 21st century art, and where people flocked to admire the work that had been flown in from all over Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Norway, the UK, USA and a number of South American countries. Considering this was Art Marbella’s first outing, the calibre of galleries, and the

26

work that they turned up with was pretty impressive. Of course, Alejandro Zaia is no novice when it comes to organising art events; he is the founder of PINTA London and New York, plus he started off in PR and advertising. You could say that he’s Mad Men’s Donald Draper merged with Charles Saatchi. He is in fact, an Argentinian who landed in the world of the art fair through his love of contemporary Latin American art. So, why did Zaia choose Marbella? Because, he explains, “it is the hottest spot in the European summer and it is a multicultural city.” That isn’t the only reason he selected Marbella to launch a new art fair brand; he also studied

the Marbella market and spotted an appetite for new cultural events, including a particular desire for an art event. It has been noticeable that a number of new galleries have opened in 2015, which underlines his claims that there are sufficient art lovers in the area to support an art market. Certainly, on the opening night the atmosphere of enthusiasm from exhibitors and guests alike was palpable. The team handling the Facebook page had done an excellent job of preparing guests for the show with teaser images from the 40 galleries who attended; there was no doubt that exciting art was coming to town!

When the doors opened, one of the first galleries that guests would have come across was ArtSLant. This US-based online gallery and artist resource brought work by Brett Day Windham, a British-born and American-educated artist who is well established on the U.S. and European art scenes. Joel Kuennan, the Chief Operating Officer and Senior Editor of ArtSlant explained that “the enthusiasm of Alejandro Zaia for the project” totally sold them on coming to Marbella. They’d also had previous contact with him at the PINTA shows. Brett Day Windham’s colourful work is rather eye-catching. She created her wall hanging and map of Paris while on an ArtSlant/Georgia Fee residency in the French capital during the first three months of 2015. She based the project on the archetype of Le Flâneur, celebrated by French poet Baudelaire, who wanders the streets of Paris, dressed up like a gentleman dandy. She adopted the lifestyle of this ‘gentleman wanderer’ and walked around Paris collecting items that she cleaned, then grouped by colour and sewed into the large wall hanging, as seen in the illustration. Her colourcoded map that accompanies the wall hanging traces the lines of her walks around the 20 arrondissements and connects them through color to her found objects. Look closely at the yellow section and you’ll see a yellow paper hand saying “Tous Charlie” that she picked up in the street during the Charlie Hebdo tragedy. It is a tapestry of a personal journey, yet all the things thrown away by others have become part of it.

28

We do not ever travel alone through the world is one message one might take from it. There was of course interest in locallysourced art, and one piece that stood out was by Gaucin-based artist Joseba Sánchez Zabaleta, shown by AP Gallery of Segovia. His “Deshabitado Verde” uses a painting technique of ultrarealism and minute brush strokes to create a photographic impression. This is not a new technique, but Joseba’s subjects—decaying rubbish and abandoned buildings—in washed out tones that lend his images a misty romanticism, separate him from the rest. The Galeria SaroLeón from Mallorca brought “Offrandes de Couleur” (Colour Offerings) by award-winning African artist Abdoulaye Konaté that grabbed attention. This white cotton, blood red and black wall hanging that is intended to flutter with the movement of air, is one of this Malian artist’s works that blends traditional craftsmanship with political commentary. It’s an elemental work that speaks to the blood and guts as much as the intellect. And there was so much more. The curators, who are international experts, did a wonderful job of showcasing diversity and creating a conversation about what is happening in contemporary art. It was also nicely ‘oiled’ by amazing Puerto de Indias strawberry gin from Sevilla, and Babička Original Wormwood vodka from the Czech Republic. Thank you to everyone who worked on Art Marbella 2015, you’ve created a new ‘hot date’ on the global art fair calendar. See you next year!

ALEJANDRO HERMANN By Eleanor McKenzie

A

purely intellectual; this is where Alejandro learns about himself and the world through the creative act of painting.

lejandro Hermann was born in Buenos Aires, now lives in Marbella, but is without doubt the living, breathing embodiment of a ‘citizen of the world.’ This gently spoken, devoted Buddhist exudes the inner peace that comes from self knowledge acquired over the years. He also has the wisdom to acknowledge that like his art, his life is still evolving. He is also an artist who believes that

although a painting may be completed, there’s always another technique to discover and develop. I went to speak to him at his studio and gallery in La Campana, which I strongly recommend visiting if you’re in the area. He also shows his work at Magna Marbella and at a vast number of hotels and restaurants. The lower floors are a haven of cool tranquillity after the searing afternoon heat outdoors and Alejandro’s charming assistant Camino warmly welcomed the SOCIETY team and made us all feel at home. She took us on a tour of the oeuvres currently being exhibited in the upstairs gallery, which is dominated by a work constructed of wood, rust, material from the street and oil paint. This was nothing like the works I’d seen during my research and I was curious about where this apparent departure from the art I’d seen online had come from. Alejandro explained: ”I created this piece after the birth of my youngest daughter.” (He has an older daughter Jasmin who is a talented artist living in Germany and two younger daughters, aged 3 and 5)

30

The smell of oil and the working materials of an artist added a workmanlike touch, which reminded me that art also requires skill in handling tools; it is not enough to just have visions. The walls are lined with an eclectic selection of books and, as an avid reader, I would have loved to have the time to browse through them, but I was here to talk to Alejandro about his work; not satisfy my book fetish.

“Her birth was a catalyst for a different way of thinking, and I started to see that a certain kind of ‘perfection’ wasn’t necessary, and that there is beauty in the things that aren’t perfect.” Rust and

rubbish from the street, plus broken bits of wood don’t conform to our general idea of beauty, and yet this powerful piece demonstrates that there is beauty in everything. Entering Alejandro’s studio on the top floor was like walking into a ‘university of the spirit.’ I call it that, because although there are only a few steps that separate it from the gallery and business levels, I had the sense of having left the things of the world behind. It felt like a place of learning, but where the learning is not

When I walked in, he was working on a massive piece that combined a figurative depiction of two geisha within an abstract landscape. The work is not finished, but it provided a good place to start our conversation. Why had he chosen geishas as the subject, I asked. “Because they are considered by many people to represent the essence of submission, but I think they are just the opposite; they possess an inner strength within a disciplined exterior.” I’m the first person to see this painting, apart from his assistant Camino.

Alejandro reveals that he’s using a brand new technique with this painting and he promises that soon he’ll have an exhibition to show it to Marbella. This leads us to talk about portraits. Alejandro paints a considerable number of portraits on commission and I can see from one beautiful portrayal of a woman in charcoal on linen that he has an

exceptional talent for catching facial expressions and revealing the inner character.

Perhaps the time he spends in meditation helps him to see the inner person, where others may only see the exterior, I ask him. But, he’s too modest a man to boast about his gifts or his Buddhist practice. Alejandro has been a Buddhist for over 25 years and spends a lot of time alone in places like the Alpujarras. The Buddha appears in many places around his studio, and the Tibetan prayer flags on the wall were the first things I saw that signalled to me that he might have an interest in Buddhism.

In art though, the master he appreciates above all others is Leonardo da Vinci. I ask him what is so special about da Vinci? “He is special, he’s a genius,” Alejandro responds. “It’s not just the work, it’s the man himself and the range of his ideas and inventions. Look at the way he explored the human musculature in detail. He shows respect to his art” Then he adds,” I like Picasso, too.” From what I have seen of his work online, I would have said that he owed some of his own technique to the Impressionists, but he denies that. What he is passionate about is Abstract Expressionism. Cy Twombly and Mark Rothko are among the big names of this movement that shook the New York art scene in the 1940s and continues to have a hold over many contemporary artists. It also happens to be a favourite movement of mine. Alejandro’s explains what he loves about working with abstraction compared to the figurative works, of which there are many in his portfolio, including some beautiful, wild animals. He says that with abstraction he has to dig deep within himself to create the work, and find the means of revealing the idea. It’s a different process to figurative painting. But then he says; ”We need everything in art; figurative, abstract, different materials, everything.” Alejandro tells me that he once had a reputation in Marbella as “the man who paints monks and Buddhas,” but it’s clear that this is not accurate. That was just one phase of his artistic life. When I ask him

”We need everything in art; figurative, abstract, different materials, everything.”

how long it takes him to complete a painting, he answers “64 years!” and we all laugh. He’s talking about his own ‘portrait’, his own life, which is still a work in progress.

ON EARTH A

hmad al-Yamani was sick. He longed for peace and quiet. But could he find it in Málaga in 1015? Alas, no! “Around me, the strings of lutes, tunburs, and other instruments vibrated from all directions, and different voices blended in singing, which was bad for me and added to my insomnia and suffering”. He moved lodgings, only to find that peace was “impossible, because music was uppermost in the concerns of the people of that region”. (Tunburs were long necked fretted stringed instruments, closely akin to the Greek tambouras of today.) Whilst contemporary Málaga can still be a noisy and musical city, very little of the original music that so annoyed Ahmad al-Yamani remains.

The troubadours, of whom William VIII was a prominent patron, epitomised all that was courtly and civilised in mediæval Europe. In this they mirrored the mores of their Muslim captives. From the eighth to the fifteenth centuries Andalusia enjoyed a golden age of tolerance and culture. Christians, Jews and Muslims lived in perfect harmony, despite their political and religious differences. Music was an integral part of daily life, as poor Ahmad al-Yamani found to his acute discomfort.

But its influence lurks in unexpected places. As we sing “do, re, me, fa, sol, la, si” how many of us realise that a few centuries ago in Al-Andalus we would have been singing “dal, ra, mim, fa, sad, lam”? (A propos of which, one wonders how many Spaniards enthusiastically shouting “Olé!”, realise that they are invoking the name of Allah?)

Whilst he was a consummate performer (it was said that he knew the words and melodies of more than a thousand songs!) in his teaching he emphasised not only the techniques, but the spiritual elements of music. He believed that the strings of his oud were associated with cosmic influences. He added a fifth string to symbolise “life and the soul”. It was expected that educated cultured men and women should be schooled in music and the arts, and have some understanding of the metaphysical world. Al-Kindi (d AD873), on the other hand, abandoned mystical concepts, and produced a book “al-Musiqa”, based upon rationalistic Greek ideas of musical theory, and this proved to be a seminal work for those who followed in his footsteps. Alfonso X, “El Sabio”, of Castile (AD 1221-1284) employed Arab musicians at his court, whilst his son, Sancho IV, “El Bravo”, (AD 1258-1296) had twenty seven salaried musicians on his payroll, of whom thirteen were Arabs, two of whom were women. (Women

For many in the Arab world, the music of Al-Andalus is regarded as a pinnacle of Arab culture. Its

influence spread far and wide beyond the Iberian peninsula. Duke William VIII of Montpellier (d 1202), having fought for the Reconquista in Spain, imported hundreds of Muslim prisoners into Poitiers, where they greatly influenced the music of the troubadours. Many of the songs and ballads of these wandering minstrels display distinct traces of Arabic intensity, profanity and eroticism. Their instruments developed: the lute from the oud, the guitar from the qitara, the shawm from the zamr, to name but three.

32

Professional musicians flourished, many the product of music schools, like that founded by Ziryab “the blackbird” (Abu-Hassan Alí Ibn Nafí AD 789-857), who also developed the oud (a form of fretless lute).

could also be found amongst the ranks of the troubadours, where they were known as trobairitz). Al-Tifashi (d AD1253) records that during the eleventh century a new style of music was being developed called muwashshah, which “combined Christian songs with those of the East”. After 1492, when the Christian forces of Los Reyes Católicos expelled Boabdil, the last Nasrid ruler, from Granada, and the iron fist of the Church clamped down on Muslim and Jew alike, waves of emigrés took Andalusian music to north Africa and the East beyond. Only in this manner did the traditional forms of muwashshah and zajal survive, as in the sixteenth century all speaking and singing in Arabic was banned in Spain. Many valuable books and documents were lost, and no written musical scores survive, but through word of mouth and folk memory from Morocco, Algeria, Libya and Tunisia the instrumental and vocal tradition can still be heard. Music in Andalusia itself took a different turn. Today, not only many Spanish musicians but musicians throughout the world are harking back to what they see as the romantic tradition of Al-Andalus, blending what they believe to be melodies faithful to the period with gitano and later flamenco influences. But such influences have taken centre stage almost exclusively in the popular mind. Think of “Spanish” music, and instantly the air is filled with the click of castañets and the strum of guitars. Despite the efforts of Alonso de Mudarra in 16th century Sevilla to develop the oud, the guitarra

COSTA CUISINE

gradually rose to prominence during the seventeenth and eighteen centuries. This in turn enabled the development of the fandango, whose earliest melody is recorded in 1705. A Malagueño version of the fandango, the verdiales, uses a variety of instruments including drums, tambourines, and castañets in addition to the guitar. Fandangos are not flamenco. (Boleros, on the other hand, belong to the cante chico family of flamenco “palos” (styles)). With its origins shrouded in mystery, it is not until 1837 that flamenco makes an appearance, and here the guitar predominates, together with zapoteo (tapping of the feet) and tapoteo or palmas (clapping of the hands). Castañets, whose origins go back a thousand years, do not form a part of Flamenco, other than in the zambra and siguiriyas forms. They play, however, a major part in sevillanas, the folk music of Sevilla derived from the old seguidillas. These were greatly influenced by flamenco in the nineteenth century, and

whilst flamenco can at times be dark, sombre and introspective, sevillanas are invariably light hearted, colourful and lively. The popular form of

flamenco so beloved by the tourist is, in fact, a form of Sevillana. Not a lot of foreigners know that!

The guys down at Book World join us once again to bring us three of their current bestsellers. One is a young fiction novel of friendship and romance that teenagers will really enjoy. One is the beautiful and inspirational story of Beryl Markham - and we also have the latest in the Steig Larsson Millennium series for all those lovers of crime and mystery.

02

As always, all books are available from Book World, Puerto Banus. Enjoy your read!

NEVER ALWAYS SOMETIMES, Adi Alsaid. (Young Adult Fiction, for readers of John Green). Never date your best friend. Always be original. Sometimes rules are meant to be broken. Best friends, Dave and Julia, were determined to never be clichés so they even wrote their own Never List of everything they vowed they’d never, ever do in high school. Some of the rules have been easy to follow; But Dave has a secret: he’s broken rule #8, never pine silently after someone for the entirety of high school. It’s either that or break rule #10,

Circling the Sun ,Paula McLain As a young girl, Beryl Markham was brought to Kenya from Britain by parents dreaming of a new life. For her mother, the dream quickly turned sour, and she returned home; Beryl was brought up by her father, who switched between indulgence and heavy-handed authority, allowing her first to run wild on their farm, then incarcerating her in the classroom. The scourge of governesses and serial absconder from boarding school, by the age of sixteen Beryl had been catapulted into a disastrous marriage - but it was in facing up to this reality that she took charge of her own destiny. Scandalising high society with her errant behaviour, she left her husband and became the first woman ever to hold a professional racehorse trainer’s licence. After falling in with the notoriously hedonistic and gin-soaked Happy Valley set, Beryl soon became embroiled in a complex love triangle with the writer Karen Blixen and big game-hunter Denys Finch Hatton (immortalised in Blixen’s memoir Out of Africa). It was this unhappy affair that set tragedy in motion, while awakening Beryl to her truest self, and to her fate: to fly.

never date your best friend. Dave has loved Julia for as long as he can remember. So when she suggests they do every Never on the list, Dave is happy to play along. He even dyes his hair an unfortunate shade of green. It starts as a joke, but then a funny thing happens - Dave and Julia discover they’ve actually been missing out on high school. And maybe even on love.

The Girl in the Spider’s Web, David Lagercrantz Continuing Stieg Larsson’s Millennium Series She is the girl with the dragon tattoo. Lisbeth Salander. An uncompromising misfit, whose burning sense of injustice and talent for investigation will never respect boundaries of state or status. He is a campaigning journalist. Mikael Blomkvist. A lone wolf, whose integrity and championing of the truth bring him time and again to the brink of unemployment and prosecution. The call comes in late at night - a super-hacker has gained access to critical, top secret U.S. intelligence. Blomkvist knows only one person who could crack the best security systems in the world. This case has all the hallmarks of Salander. She is accused of acting without reason, taking risks just because she can, but though they have lost touch, Blomkvist knows Lisbeth better than that. There must be something deeper at the heart of this - maybe even the scoop that Millennium magazine so desperately needs for its survival. A tangled web of truth that someone is prepared to kill to protect . . .

SUNBED WORKOUT W elcome to column three on our quest to improve our bodies and our health. I truly hope you are enjoying reading and doing the exercises so far that I have suggested for you in July and August’s issue of SOCIETY magazine, they do really work! Ok, the last two months we’ve been concentrating on the gorgeous buttock area, and we will return to the derrière later on. Butt, (did you like what I did there?) because we are moving swiftly into the quieter month of September, when there is more space on the beach and by your swimming pool. I thought it would be an ideal time to give you a fun full body workout that you can do whilst laying (kind of) in the glorious September sunshine. Why not get a group of your girlfriends to complete this with you whilst by the pool or on the beach. I will give a FREE class to any photos that myself or SOCIETY magazine are tagged in on Facebook of you doing your September Sunbed Workout. Or hashtag #SocietySexySeptember on Instagram. Before completing any exercises, you should consult your physician or other health care professional to determine if it’s right for your needs. If you ever feel dizzy or unwell stop immediately and consult your physician. Remember to breathe comfortably throughout the exercises and make sure you control all movements. I recommend that you go for a little swim or a brisk walk along the beach to warm your body first.

1 ELEVATED PLANK Position yourself on your elbows, with them placed under your shoulders, lift your feet and place your toes up onto your sunbed. Make sure your back is straight and your head is in line with your spine. Pull in your tummy muscles, to help support your back and make them work harder. Hold this position still and count to 20 or 30. Want to make it easier? Do the same exercise on the floor Want to make it harder? Lift alternate legs straight up behind you; be extremely careful not to arch your lower back!

4 BUTT LIFT Lay on your back on your sunbed, knees bent, feet slightly apart, arms relaxed by your sides. Lift up your butt and squeeze your butt checks. Aim for 20 butt lifts, girls. Want to make it harder? Place your feet up onto your sunbed with bent knees, lying on the floor.

2 THE CHEST FIRMER Ok, so this exercise is not rocket science, BUT it is an integral part of ALL female training programs I design, for reasons I will explain another time. AKA The Press Up, kneel on a folded towel and place your hands slightly wider than your shoulders and in line with them. Bend your arms and bring your nose down to the floor level with your fingertips. If you find this too easy, read the points below. Want to make it harder? Level 2 - Take your hands further away from your knees, still keep alignment and bring your chest down. Level 3 - Elevate your knees off the floor so your legs are straight, girls. Level 4 – Bring your toes up onto your sunbed, like you did in the Elevated Plank.

5 SEXY HAMSTRINGS Now lay on your front, on your sunbed and cross your right leg over the left. I want you to press down with right leg, and then whilst you are doing this curl your left leg into your bum. You should feel this in the back of your left thigh. This is such a sexy muscle for women to develop, so don’t be shy. Complete 1 or 2 sets of 10 repetitions on each leg, adjusting your own pressure, will of course change the intensity of this exercise. Get working girls!

3 SUNBED SQUAT Stand with your feet hip width apart, toes facing forward and with your sunbed positioned behind you (make sure it is secure and can take your weight). Bend your knees and sit down on the sunbed, keeping your heels on the floor. Then stand back up again; keep looking forward, with your back straight, abdominals pulled in and hands across your chest. Try to tense your thigh and buttock muscles as you stand up. Try to complete 2 sets of 8-12 repetitions (this will depend on your level of fitness and if you are using extra weight – see below) Want to make it harder? Take hold of a large bottle of water Only lightly tap the sunbed with your butt and then return to standing

et’s be honest… Who doesn’t want a beautiful smile? A smile speaks a thousand words and can make or break your day and, as Annie said, “You’re never fully dressed without a smile!” Everyone wants beautiful, white, shiny teeth… but all too often we think that those perfect Hollywood-style teeth can only be afforded by celebrities, film stars and the mega-rich… Not any more! Using the latest invention in laser lamps, combined with blue jet fusion, the treatment is fast and efficient and the results are breathtaking, even after only one session! Not only does it not hurt, but also it doesn’t damage the enamel – and keeps your teeth strong and healthy! As soon as I had my first Mega White treatment, I knew I’d be back for more! I was thrilled… absolutely delighted! The difference (even after only one session) was so incredible that it gave me a new confidence and self-assurance! I felt so happy that all I wanted to do was show off my new smile!. That’s how I started this business! As soon as I saw how white my teeth were after the first session, I decided

to make the treatment available to everyone! I wanted to offer a solution so that everyone could have that bright, white, million-dollar smile – easily and simply, without it having to cost the earth! The idea is to build up a regular, close and loyal clientele – who can use this treatment as often as they choose and after the procedure, we offer homecare gel, which you can use frequently from your own home… It’s easy, it’s affordable, it’s pain free… and the results are AMAZING!

Our resident health and nutrition expert has been a busy bee this month as she continues on her mission to change our eating habits and to bring us easy, affordable and healthy food options.

I’ve just returned from a busy work trip to London and it’s lovely to be home again. London seems to have become the Mecca of healthy food pop-up alternatives. It’s been two years since I last properly visited the city and in that time healthy food trends seem to have emerged in a big way. Women like Natasha from Honestly Healthy and Ella Woodward from Deliciously Ella have paved the way in terms of alternative foods and made their way into mainstream kitchens. But even though there is a consciousness of healthier food options I still find it hard to travel and have access to good food so I’ve developed my own little habits that keep me going - and a mindset that keeps me from making the wrong choices. The first step starts at home Before I even leave the house I always pack a food pack made up of various different snacking options.

44

Travel Healthy Bettina has been darting on and off planes, hotel hopping and munching her way around London to check out all the best spots for yummy nutritious meals and snacks. She shares some of her travel tips with us and reports back on where to get the tastiest healthy food in the big city.

If I have an early flight it’s a breakfast pack. One option is bread with nut butter and sliced fruit sandwiched together to avoid mess, a bag of mixed nuts, and some fruit – either an apple or a banana. If I have a later flight I make a grain-based bowl with veggies topped off with whatever leftovers I have in the fridge. Being healthy means taking responsibility for your health and preparing yourself to NOT make the wrong choices. I know all too well when I haven’t made a conscious effort to prepare because I will be standing at an airport starving and making bad choices because of the poor selection of what’s on offer. 100% preparation enables 80% success rate! Arriving at your destination Do your homework before arriving to find out where you can get fruit, nuts and snacks. Stock up on bottled water so that you don’t fall into the trap of fizzy drinks and sugar-laced juices from mini bars. www.happycow.net is a great website for sourcing plant-based places all over the world.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

Grocery Stores Empty the mini fridge and stock up on healthy alternatives from a grocery store or if you are lucky there will be a whole foods where you are. But I have to say most big department stores in the UK had alternative ingredients that were ok to eat on the go.

Create your own dish from what’s already on the menu. If you look closely, most restaurants include veggies, grains and pulses on their menus. Find the ingredients and ask them to cook something for you. Also look at the side dishes. Some of the places I went to in London had AMAZING side dishes like broccolini, beetroot salads, greens and yummy veggie dishes. I hope some of these tips help you. I realise that some people are very busy and prefer extremely convenient methods but until more healthy options are available - and until we as consumers demand them, some planning and effort is needed.

HERE ARE SOME OF THE PLACES THAT I VISITED IN LONDON AND MY THOUGHTS ON THEM. I’ll be working more in the uk in the future so i’m looking forward to trying many more places! Juice Baby Great little juice bar in Chelsea with caramel slices to die for. This is a one-stop shop for plant-based goodies to take away. Their massaged kale salad is one of their best sellers. In terms of portion sizes versus price I thought Juice Baby was more on par compared to some of the other places I visited. Nama Vegan/raw artisan place based in Notting Hill. Their menu included everything from the vegan/raw spectrum. I had their savoury wrap that was very good. The only downside is that I found the juices to be very small in comparison to their prices. So I would go for the food but stick to cucumber water Tanya’s Cafe Based in a MY hotel in Chelsea is another vegan/raw lunch restaurant that includes all elements of that type of cuisine. I thought the food was great but again I found the juices pricey considering the amount offered. Maybe I am just used to Marbella portions!

Two other places worth mentioning that I absolutely loved are Grangier & Co for their menu adaptation and vegan/vegetarian alternatives I loved their spelt pasta with greens and broccolini! Also there was Grain Store that had a very vegetable friendly menu with clearly marked vegan/vegetarian options. I had their Vegan Chilli that tasted amazing considering that it’s a dish that can be slightly boring and overdone. All in all I was impressed with London. Things are happening and moving in the right direction. Now it just needs to get a bit more affordable and mainstream. Until next time, stay healthy!

Lots of Love xx hen @Bettinas_kitc co n. m bettinaskitche lucci@ bettinacampo gmail.com

To Strobe OR NOT To Strobe

Our Beauty Expert and Professional Makeup Artist Liza Mayne - With over 10 years in the business she share all her tips and tricks with us on this season hottest new makeup trend.

WHAT IS STROBING? Strobing is a technique that only uses light to enhance your

face - no bronzer or darker powders involved here. It’s basically a fun term for highlighting. Forget everything you learned about contouring - it was hard enough to master, anyway. Extra highlighting will give you a dewy, shimmery, more youthful glow. But, because dewy can turn into sweaty very easily, here are a few tips to keep you on the right track.

1 234 Prep your skin with a hydrating moisturiser. Strobing is all about getting the perfect glow, so you’ll need to recharge dull or dry looking skin with a good moisturiser first.

POWDER

Use a highlighter shade that best matches your skin tone. To avoid an over the top frosted look, make sure the highlighter you’re using complements your skin tone for a subtle sheen.

Highlighter should only be used on spots that catch the light - on your cheekbones, along your temples, down the bridge of your nose, below your brow bone, in the corners of your eyes, and above your cupid’s bow. This will enhance your natural features. Remember to keep the product to these specific areas and try not to spread around the whole face. If you have oily skin, DO NOT apply to your forehead or chin, which have a little shine already.

After you’ve applied the highlighter, blend it out with your fingers, a fan brush, or a damp makeup sponge. BLEND, BLEND, BLEND!!! To avoid obvious makeup lines, make sure there are no harsh edges of highlighter so it fades into the rest of your skin.

Clarins - Instant light

VS

CREAM

Bobbi Brown Highlight Powder Bronze Glow

I’ve been experimenting a lot with highlighting and contouring products, researching and trying out different brands, types, and textures. I have worked a great deal with both powder and cream products and it really does make a difference which is preferable depending on one’s skin, how oily or dry it is, what look you’re going for and what you’re comfortable using.

Charlotte Tilsbury Dreamy glow highligher MAC Strobe Cream

My personal verdict:

Creams are better for highlighting for a more subtle effect - they have a healthy dewy glow on the skin and they blend in beautifully leaving skin with a sun-kissed sheen. Powders are more dense so give off a much stronger look - be careful, if not applied properly can build up and can be seen as a cakey - so blend and buff well into the skin. Strobing is so simple because all you need is one illuminating product and a makeup brush, or your fingertip to accomplish the look.

ON TREND

TRESSES

From slicked side partings to textured low ponytails, Daniel takes you through the only Autumn/Winter 2015 hair trends worth trying out.

WHAT SIDE ARE YOU ON?

Middle is out, so it’s now time to take sides. If you don’t know whether you are a leftie or a rightie then speak to your hair stylist, as they will be able to advise you on what suits you best. I’m lucky as I can swing both ways!

A LOW PROFILE

So, how low can you go? Ponytails were all over the A/W15 catwalks and the new way to wear them is at the nape of the neck, while the hair band should sit about two inches lower. To keep it ‘fashion forward’ wrap a piece of hair around the band and pin it in place. Depending on your personal style, you can glam up the pony by creating a sleek finish using the Redken Shine Flash 02, €16,88, or if this is too prim and proper for you, take inspiration from Michael Kors and opt for a messy chic version. I personally can’t get enough of the side pony à la Dior. You know-whatever Dior says goes!

Now you have chosen a side, how far should you go? A deep side parting with wetlooking hair plastered against the forehead was everywhere this season. Balmain swept hair to one side with glossy poker straight locks, while at Donna Karan the hair at the front looked almost plastic and then fell into a blunt cut below the shoulders. For a more wearable version, just tong through the lower lengths and smooth side-parted locks behind your ears finishing with a spritz of Paul Mitchell Super Clean hairspray, €15,75.

Balmain

Michael Kors

You can take the low pony from casual to party by sweeping your fringe to the side, pinning it with a sparkly accessory, and adding some height at the crown. Finally, you can go TOTALLY old school with this look and pull two strands out from your ponytail so they frame your face. I bet the last time you wore this look was at your school disco! BATTLE OF THE BANDS

Giorgio Armani

Hair accessories are making a serious comeback, thanks to Dolce & Gabbana who led the way this Summer. I do love a headband, especially with a twist. Proenza Schouler paired leather headbands with a messy updo - just too yummy for words. When the festive season comes around, how about a pretty pearl headband for party time? Just pull out a few strands here and there so you don’t look too Blair Waldorf.

Chloe

FRINGE BENEFITS

The choppy fringe is back as we move away from full-on bangs. I think my heart actually skipped a beat when I spotted the Giorgio Armani models working not one but TWO of these key trends; choppy bangs and low, undone buns. Perfect this look by leaving several face-framing strands loose from the style and keeping the bun messy.

Burberry

Marissa Webb Jessica Alba

GET KNOTTED

Yes, this is as easy as it sounds. Take two sections from the back and literally tie your hair in a knot, and pin. Leave a strand loose from the knotted bun to recreate the quirky Jonathan Saunders style. This works on long, or even midi-length hair.

WAVE ON

Curls have died a dramatic fashion death this season don’t take it out on me, I am just passing on the message. This Autumn you will have to embrace your kinky side and let your natural waves shine through. Lock your hair dryer away, spritz in some Redken Fashion Waves 07 Sea Saltinfused Spray, €16,88 and leave to air dry. Tousled bedhead waves were also seen at Gucci - I love this style on long bobs and the midi. You can even take this look one step further by adding plenty of texture and a wetlook finish, giving a nod to the grunge trend, which has reared its greasy head again.

A chignon usually screams regal, but this season it’s had what I would call a make-under. I like to think of it as an upside down Audrey - if I have to tell you which Audrey, then you really shouldn’t be reading my column. The new twist was first seen at Chanel, where my hair guru Sam McKnight finished the look off with statement piece pin and thick ribbon. Then, the Fendi team left the ends loose and fanned out, while at Tom Ford they added a braided extension.

COLOUR THERAPY

As we head into Autumn, golds and caramels will start coming into play, and in-salon work will lean towards warmer tones. Seriously, as soon as the temperature drops my clients start asking me to warm them up. I never can understand why people decide to go much darker during the winter. When the weather is dull outside, why on earth would you want your hair to match it? Go brighter and lighter to lift your spirits and Gucci make you feel better. You can thank me later – my hairdresser psychotherapy clinic is open every Thursday. If you prefer a more ashy tone, then you will be happy to know that grey isn’t going anywhere. I personally prefer this hair hue on lighter complexions. Also pastel pink, blue and green are still hanging around. I loved the ice-blonde-to-pink fade out spotted on the Gucci runway. If you are a brunette, I would recommend moving towards a more chestnut shade, or chocolate/caramels. Think of it like baking a cake, or a Twix or Drifter. Hmmm, I am definitely due my sugar fix some time soon.

To pull off deep rich lip colours skin needs to be dewy. You can achieve this look by mixing a drop of oil into your foundation or mixing a shimmer into your foundation for a sultry dewy-sheen look.

To create a look of liquid gold on the eyes use a mixing solution with your favourite gold shadow or invest in a high-pigmented gold eyeliner. This can also be added to lips.

HOW TO TRAVEL

In Style

DRESSING FOR PLANES, TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES Photography by Juanlu Rodriguez Location: Guarnieri Marbella Art Direction: Gema Forsström

A

s the world seems to become even smaller and we traverse it ever more frequently, the question of what to wear on said journeys is always on our minds. On the one hand, you want pieces that are comfortable and practical. And yet, looking at photos of someone like Veruschka from the 1970s, heading to baggage claim in a tailored coat,

floppy hat, and sensibly heeled loafers, one can’t help but feel wistful for a time when the ideas of elegance and travel didn’t seem oceans apart. When travelling on an airplane, or sitting through a long car or train ride, it’s easy to end up looking tired and feeling chaotic from jet lag and exhaustion. Yet, looking your best when travelling isn’t impossible!

Dressing appropriately for air travel means knowing what will keep you comfortable on the plane. The following items, which provide plenty of comfort plus a touch of style, are essential for any jet-setting flyer’s wardrobe. Be the best dressed in the cabin with our guide to in-flight apparel.

“One can’t help but feel wistful for a time when the ideas of elegance and travel didn’t seem oceans apart.”

Fliers must brave a multitude of temperature changes throughout their journeys. There’s the jog through the sunny airport terminal, the warm 20 minute wait while the plane sits on the tarmac pre-take-off and that in-flight arctic chill. Layers are a traveller’s best weapon against such varying weather conditions, especially when landing in a different climate zone. You can build up or break down an outfit to take it from chilly to warm in no time! In order to look your best and still feel comfortable, substitute sweats for

cashmere lounge pants, leggings under a comfortable dress, or comfy jeans and a sweater. Suit pants that have a little bit of stretch in them are going to be able to move and stretch, without ending up crisscrossed in wrinkles. To spruce up your luggage, tie a coloured bow or scarf to your suitcase, making it easy to spot among a sea of similarlooking bags. Plus, in this way you can combine your outfit to go with your luggage to make everything look more put together!

Footwear should be comfortable and adaptable. A chic shoe (with a zip, never laces!) is your answer to moving through an airport security line quickly. Maintain maximum travel comfort by wearing breathable and, if possible, wrinkle free fabrics like cotton, silk or materials made from natural fibres.

PACKING Tips & TRICks

Roll, don’t fold! Don’t arrive at your holiday destination to be faced with a pile of ironing. Always roll your clothes instead of folding them, because it decreases the potential for wrinkles, as well as saving space in your suitcase.

Accesorise Take bold and adaptable accessories with you, like statement necklaces, belts or scarves to update your look. Accessories have the potential to change the same outfit into a completely different one!

Have essentials in your hand luggage It’s always best to be prepared and let’s face it, sometimes bags go missing. Make sure all your valuables are in your hand luggage and always pack a spare change of clothes in your hand luggage too, just in case your checked bag is lost or delayed. That way, you won’t have to rush to the shops as soon as you arrive to buy replacement clothing.

Take versatile items Pack items that you can wear on multiple occasions, and ones that swiftly transform a look from day to night. These items should be functional and easy to combine with the rest of the pieces of clothing that you decide to take with you.

! e g a y o v Bon 68

Plan your outfits Planning your outfits beforehand will save you lots of stressful moments putting together a look when you’re already at your destination. It will also save room in your suitcase, especially when travelling with limited luggage space. Plus, it leaves more space to bring back local souvenirs and gifts!

Travel necessities checkist Create your own travel necessities checklist that you can reference each time you travel. You can title each page with a different holiday type. For example, this could relate to season, length of stay or style of holiday. You could have pages for ‘weekend break’, ‘beach holiday’ or ‘winter ski holiday’. Spend some minutes brainstorming and making a packing list on each page. Always have this list next to your passport, so when you go away, your mind won’t go blank and you’ll always remember the correct things to pack.

AUTOBELLO Marbella Inaugural event heralds 2016 Concours d’ Elegance in Marbella By Ian Kuah

T

he gem of the Costa del Sol (Coast of the Sun) in Southern Spain, Marbella has always attracted the rich and famous. Sean Connery had a home here in the 1970s, and the Saudi Royal Family fell in love with the place and had a palace built for their summer vacations. The nearby Puerto Banús harbour is the haunt of super yachts. Most of them never leave port, and are instead used for parties and just posing on. The myriad of designer shops on the front line facing the water reinforces the upscale image of the port, so it is no surprise that the parking spaces in front of these yachts are populated with cars wearing the whole alphabet soup of prestige badges from Aston Martin to Rolls-Royce.

88

Spectators were treated to some very rare supercars in the form of an Aston Martin One-77, two LaFerraris, a Lamborghini Aventador, a Mercedes SLR McLaren Stirling Moss, and a Pagani Zonda Tricolore. However, for car enthusiasts, perhaps the biggest surprise is that almost all of these expensive cars are bog standard. It is only occasionally that you see a Ferrari, Bentley or Lamborghini wearing a body kit and wheels from one of the well-known tuners. In fact, if you want to be almost anonymous in this wealthy town, a red Ferrari 458 Italia or Black Range Rover Sport in standard trim will do the job nicely, while a red 430 or 458 at a local Ferrari Club meeting only serves to emphasis the fact that these cars are not as exclusive as their owners would like to think. For some owners however, flaunting their prized supercars in front of the masses on a Saturday evening drive around Puerto Banús is passé, and they prefer the company of like-minded individuals

at a more exclusive, dedicated supercar event. Thus, for the first time ever, the Autobello event, normally held in Madrid, came to Marbella on July 30th, and was hosted in the grounds of the Villa Padierna Palace Hotel where Michelle Obama and her entourage famously stayed in 2010. This gathering however, was not a proper Autobello, but rather a primer and press preview for the inaugural event proper that will take place in 2016. Thus, only a handful of classics were present and the crowd had to be content with the plethora of supercars owned by enthusiasts who had not left for their summer vacations. That said, despite the short notice given, twice as many cars as the organisers anticipated turned up on the evening, endorsing the potential of such an event.

TORQUE TALK

Spectators were treated to some very rare supercars in the form of an Aston Martin One-77, two LaFerraris, a Lamborghini Aventador, a Mercedes SLR McLaren Stirling Moss, and a Pagani Zonda Tricolore. These hypercars somewhat overshadowed the BMW i8, McLaren 650S and plethora of ‘normal’ Ferraris. The best of the classic cars present was undoubtedly the gorgeous newly restored Jaguar XK150 Coupe belonging to Jo Ramirez, former F1 mechanic and McLaren F1 Team Co-ordinator before he retired in 2001. Jo will be one of the judges for the 2016 event. The Autobello Marbella Concours d’ Elegance hopes to attract top quality classic cars of all marques from other parts of Spain as well as other European countries like the UK, France, Germany and Holland. Given the number of people from these countries with second homes in Marbella, this should not be a problem.

SMOKE , NO MIRRORS! We find out if McLaren 675LT has made the ultimate all-round supercar

90

TORQUE TALK

Motoring author, racing driver and photo-journalist Ian Kuah reports on the McLaren 675LT

91

TORQUE TALK

I

n 1995, McLaren won the 24 Hours of Le Mans first time out with the GTR version of their brand new F1, a brilliant achievement with a road car based entry. Entered in the BPR Global GT Series, the F1 GTR also became the first nonJapanese car to win the JGTC the year after. However, competition from pure racing cars meant that McLaren had to institute a programme of updates to stay competitive in the 1997 season. Going through the whole car to reduce weight and improve performance led to the 1997 spec F1 GTR with its heavily modified and aerodynamically improved bodywork. Known as the ‘Long Tail’ or LT for short, because of the extended rear required to generate additional downforce, this car had 600hp and weighed just 910kg.

92

So what do you get when you take a McLaren 650S, beef up the engine, revise the suspension, add a 34mm longer (behind the rear wheel arches) carbonfibre body, and go through every component with a fine toothed comb to save 100kg? The answer is the 675LT, the more track day focused model that many 650S owners said they wanted. “It’s all about incremental improvements throughout the whole car, and around one third of the parts are new or modified,” explained Project Manager, Mark Gayton. “This is how the original McLaren F1 GTR was evolved into the Long Tail or LT version for the 1997 race season, and this is the approach we have taken with the 675LT,” he said, describing how McLaren turned their already impressive 650S into an even more focused street legal track day weapon.

The late Colin Chapman, founder of Lotus, once famously said, “For speed add lightness.” McLaren takes this to the next level by adding lightness and power. So while at first glance, the addition of 25hp and 50Nm of torque for 670hp at 7,100rpm and 700Nm of torque from 5,500 to 6,500rpm does not appear to be an earth shattering upgrade, the simultaneous removal of 100kg, equivalent to the weight of an above average size passenger, certainly makes the deal. Some of this saving comes from the carbon-fibre bodywork that replaces the SMC panelling of the 650S. The new larger rear spoiler is 2.3kg lighter but provides 50-percent more downforce at top speed. Tipping the scales at 1,320kg, (1,230kg dry), the 675LT has a power-to-weight ratio of 549hp/tonne. The headline numbers

TORQUE TALK

275g/km emissions, the same as the less powerful 650S. This also means the car escapes the gas-guzzler tax in the US market. These changes are significant enough that the engine has its own specific designation of M838TL. McLaren was criticised for the rather flat soundtrack of the original MP4-12C. The 650S was much better, but the 675LT is the real deal. Its lightweight titanium exhaust with long cross-over pipes not only lowers back pressure for more power and better throttle response, but also provides a truly engaging soundtrack with pops and bangs on the over-run in Sport and Track modes.

“It’s all about incremental improvements throughout the whole car, and around one third of the parts are new or modified...”

Interestingly, McLaren admitted that this exhaust has a static noise peak of 105dB, which puts it over the limit for some tracks with sensitive residents. However, it is frequency related, and in drive-by it is much less than this so is subject to negotiation with track officials on the day.

are 0-100km/h in 2.9 sec, 0-200km/h in 7.9 sec, with a top speed of 330km/h. McLaren did not win their F1 World Championship by not being thorough. Thus, the power increase was not just a simple matter of turning up the wick on their 3.8 litre twin-turbo, dry-sump flatplane crank V8. Around 50-percent of the engine’s internals have been changed or modified, with lighter connecting rods, revised camshaft profiles and a new high-pressure fuel pump amongst the upgrades. The turbochargers are also bespoke and use machined billet rather than cast impeller wheels for tighter tolerances and lower inertia. Electrically actuated waste-gates replace the vacuum operated ones, while the smaller and more efficient intercoolers save 6.0kg. These weight saving changes were made as much for the new F1-derived Ignition Cut upshift technology, which enables the SSG twin-clutch gearbox to shift twice as fast as before, as for better throttle response. As on the 650S, when you are in Track mode with over 5,000rpm and 60 percent throttle, Inertia Push harnesses the built up kinetic energy in the engine to give a torque impulse as the next gear up is engaged so that no momentum is lost. More advanced metal catalytic converters remove more particulates and help to lower backpressure. The pre-catalyst has also been repositioned for faster light off from cold, and these changes are partly responsible for the

93

TORQUE TALK

In a fascinating chat with engineer, Carlo Della Casa, who worked for Ferrari for 18 years, I learned that the engaging soundtrack is down to far more than just the new titanium exhaust. “The man behind its design is also the cars NVH engineer and a hobby musician,” he explained. “He used his knowledge of acoustics to play with the sounds created by the intake, exhaust and various cavities in the car as well as elements like the engine and transmission mounts. It is about tone, volume and harmonics, and is like an orchestra creating a unique soundtrack that is the voice of the McLaren 675LT.” The aerodynamic work is a game changer in more ways than one. Apart from providing 40-percent more total downforce, the new aero aids also contribute to lower drag as well as improved engine cooling and thus efficiency. While the more prominent front splitter provides downforce, the vertical fins at the sides channel air past the front wheels more cleanly, thus reducing drag. The resulting laminar flow along the lower sides of the car directs ram air into the smaller air intakes on the trailing edge of the new side skirts. Significantly, the wind tunnel work threw up the fact that the lower third of the 650S side

94

TORQUE TALK

radiators was not getting the full airflow to exploit their inherent capacity. As there was no space for larger radiators, which would increase weight anyway, the solution was larger side air scoops and an additional smaller scoop on each side at the rear of each contoured side skirt. These funnel ram air directly to the lowest part of the radiators, whose slightly greater inclination further aids through flow. More power equals more heat, and getting heat out of the engine bay was a priority. To this end, the 3.68kg (1.7kg lighter than glass) Plexiglass rear engine cover is not just for weight saving, and its slots are angled for maximum air extraction. Furthering the cause are the large mesh covered air extraction vents on the engine lid above the exhaust, and the mesh air on the rear panel that replaces the horizontal slats used on the 12C and 650S. As mesh is more optically transparent, this gave McLaren the impetus to tidy up everything in the engine bay that can be seen. The suspension components are new and take a leaf from the P1 book. Fashioned from forged aluminium by Pankl in Austria, the new longer double wishbones are lighter and stiffer for lower unsprung weight, and give the car its 20mm wider track for better turn-in and cornering stability. Their pickup points are also different as the 675LT set-up works with more negative camber. The hub carrier/upright is new, and its stiffer construction provides improved resistance to lateral forces, helping to keep geometry more consistent under load. The front and rear spring rates have been increased by 27 and 63-percent respectively, but thanks to the recalibrated dampers the ride in Normal mode is only slightly stiffer. Low friction valves that are able to react faster, and revised software are responsible for this.

Overall, the suspension upgrade makes for better body control and sharper reflexes, but was also required to cope with the 40-percent increase in aerodynamic downforce. At the other end of the scale, the cars chassis behaviour on track has been taken to the next level and more. So in reality, despite its more focused track credentials, the 675LT actually boasts a wider rather than narrower chassis performance envelope. The new 8.5J x 19 and 11.0J x 20-inch alloys are even lighter than the P1s and shod with 235/35ZR19 and 305/30ZR20 Pirelli PZero Trofeo R tyres. Thanks to stiffer sidewall construction and a bespoke compound, they provide six-percent more grip than the normal PZero Corsa trackday rubber. The 675LT is capable of 1.45g lateral acceleration, with a more linear characteristic velocity once the limit is broached. PZero tyres are offered as a no cost option for customers living in colder, wetter climate, and who do not plan to do much track driving. In the cabin, things look familiar, the main changes being in the ultra-light figure hugging sports seats and the software. Here you now have an app for on-track data logging that uses GPS to identify the race circuit you are on. And if it is an unfamiliar one, it will record all the data after a couple of laps. You can even add up to three video cameras to the system to log your drive in full. The rollover hoops behind the seats are now made from titanium, an industry first. At 4.3 kg, they are half the weight of the

normal steel version, and have been given an exotic brushed finish. The price tag of ÂŁ249,500 in the UK is substantially more than the ÂŁ198,000 for the 650S, but on both road and track, the difference is sensational. Where the 650S impressed as a near perfect all-rounder with a comfortable road ride and terrific track ability, the 675LT takes this to the next level in all respects. The 1.851 mile long South Loop of the International Circuit at Silverstone is very fast but also has a couple of slow bends. Go into one of these too hot, and understeer prevails, as you would expect. But remember that even F1 drivers have no helping aerodynamic downforce to help them through the slowest turns. The trick is to get your entry speed nailed down tight on the way on and then balance the car into the turn. It responds very well to trail braking, the weight transfer getting those sticky front tyres working optimally. Incidentally, static weight distribution is 42.5/57.5 percent, providing better traction for the rear wheels. In medium, but particularly fast bends, the significantly greater aero of the 675LT comes into play. That larger, longer air splitter in front and the matching 50-percent larger active wing at the back together create 40-percent more downforce than the 650S, making a huge difference to high-speed stability, grip and braking. The 675LT also has more reflex camber, so the rear ride height is slightly higher, which makes the active rear wing more effective when fully deployed under hard braking. The retardation provided by the huge calipers clamping the vented carbon discs is absolutely state-of-the-art.

95

TORQUE TALK

The big speeds they washed off lap after lap as we came off the long straight are a test of any cars anchors, but these were as good as it gets in stopping ability as well as feel and consistency. With a 13.9:1 steering ratio in place of the 650S’s 14.6:1, the 675LT’s nose is pointier. But because it has been perfectly tuned to work with the improved chassis turn-in rate, it is not so fast that you feel any nervousness. If anything, the combination makes you feel more at one with the car, giving you the confidence to push a bit harder with increasing familiarity. In fact, although I had not driven at Silverstone for a few years, but by the third lap, the user friendliness of the chassis and its perfect balance made me feel comfortable enough to begin really exploring the cars capabilities. Combined with the Pirelli Trofeo R track day rubber, the aero on the 675LT allows you to confidently keep the throttle pinned in fast bends at speeds that would be beyond the mechanical grip levels of the 650S and its rivals. And when you do exceed the limit, the new suspension components and revised geometry ensure that breakaway is more progressive and linear than ever.

96

The engine is simply fantastic, strutting its stuff with a throaty roar all the way to the 8,500rpm redline, its delivery characteristics are noticeably different from the 650S. Instead of building to a plateau, the torque continues to rise, giving it a more racecar rather than road car feel. And the inertia boost feature, which adds the kinetic energy in the turbocharger system towards maintaining the boost for faster upshifts, is pretty effective. On part throttle it exhibits a tractability and friendliness that seem at odds with the afterburner like thrust delivered when you pin the throttle. Go for broke and machinegun swift, gearshifts up and down the seven-speed SSG box are delivered instantly and perfectly, the ‘box and engine feeling like a perfect team. Most importantly, the 675LT feels at one with its driver. It is an easy car to drive at road speeds, and a progressive and responsive one for the advanced track day pilot when extended. Versatility is a strong suit here and you can tailor the cars ride separately from the engine and gearbox. Thus, you can have a very direct drivetrain with a good ride on the road.

I tried various settings on each lap at Silverstone, and found clear differences in the way the car handles in the Sport and Track modes, with diminishing electronic support all the way up to Off for the ESC and Traction Control at which point you are on your own. Each time I drive the latest evolution of the car that started life as the MP4-12C, I feel that the paddle shifter action has been further refined. That is certainly the case here, and that wonderfully tactile F1-style paddle ‘bar’ now has a finely honed action with far less force required and yet even more positive feedback to affirm your next ratio request. This underlines McLaren’s attention to every small detail as they evolve a design, continuing their relentless pursuit of perfection even after the car goes into production. The result is the best and most engaging McLaren yet, and a car that covers more bases than any of its rivals. Annoyingly for those spurred onto whipping out their chequebooks, every one of the 500 675LTs to be built over the coming months is now sold. But you can be sure that the lessons learnt here will also find their way into future McLaren models. For the enthusiast this all adds up to a tremendously satisfying ownership experience with a supercar maker that really does listen to its customers.

COLLABORATION

S

omeone once said “when there is teamwork and collaboration, wonderful things can be achieved” and this is certainly applicable of the joint efforts and teamwork that have gone into the creation and design of El Madroñal Residence. The development

106

is only at its infant stages of construction but has already accomplished so much. Having been named as one of the top ten off-plan developments in Spain by The Sunday Times, El Madroñal Residence has been attracting some attention, resulting in only one property left available on

the market. This exclusive development, set on elevated plots in the luxurious El Madro単al boasts stunning views, generous size acreage and the exciting concept of being able to tailor your home to exactly your lifestyle and flair. The villa designs themselves have been given a great deal of thought by The Propana Group and no detail has been left out. The development company has brought together a victorious formula of consultants that enable this building experience not only a breath of fresh air but it is also proving to be award winning. El Madro単al Residence has just won two separate awards in two separate categories at the International Property Awards for the stunning design of the private urbanisation and Propana Group happily acknowledges that this is due to a total team effort and strong working relationships with their carefully selected team of consultants bringing

the best ideas together and making them work in harmony with the layout and style of the property. Propana Group had a clear and defined idea of how best to develop these luxury plots and has worked closely with architects Crest Group and Melvin Villarroel to offer their clients a number of design style possibilities. FOC Design has consulted with Propana closely throughout the design process of the homes to ensure the space is used to its best advantage and offering design styles and ideas that can then be hand-picked by the client during the building process. Propana has then been able to demonstrate its ideas in

a full life-like render of both the interior and exterior. This luxurious development does not have to be imagined, it can be perfectly seen on screen and in print. The design selection process has become interactive for the client, who is able to select from Northern European qualities of finishes and furnishings, which is a benchmark Propana Group has set for all of their future developments. The client is involved as much as they desire and, with the winning selection of professionals they have selected, El Madro単al Residence is only the first in many future award winning properties. focdesign.es

Light Up

YOUR LIFE! By Hayley Reed, Founder of Foc Design

I

cannot express enough how crucial lighting is to complete the design of a space. The lighting in a home changes the mood of a room just as it does the perceived size of a room. Placement and type are important aspects of interior design, and they work in conjunction with colour selections, room size, availability of natural light and furniture choice. The elements that come together when the right lighting is achieved transform a room into a seamless combination of functionality and style. Lighting can create or destroy the mood of a room and, whether you are opting for a subtle combination of indirect light or want to source a real statement piece, lighting is key. Here we have picked out some real eye-catching lighting solutions to suit all styles and tastes that really will light up your life!

STAY Classy

For the more delicate of lighting solutions, there are some fabulous droplet chandeliers and pendants out there. The combination of light and glass is no secret, but these beauties are all inspired by the behaviour of water and how it forms as well as how it refracts light. Some using a more abstract cascade reminding us of rainfall, whilst others are built with a more uniform structure that allows the light to travel through the glass and create interesting, abstract patterns on the surrounding surfaces. Most suppliers also supply off-wall lights to match and various sizes of their creations - so whether it is for a two-tier stairwell or just over the dining table we are sure to find you a “glassy” piece de resistance!

SAY HELLO TO

INDUSTRIAL

The industrial look is not for the safe.

Although it allows you to mix many a genre and eclectically dress any room, industrial elements tend to be on the rough and ready side of design. From cage lighting to the vintage pendants, the industrial lighting that is available is not supposed to feel flawless, it’s inspired by the upcylcing movement, the New York openplan converted warehouse and embraces the creative and quirky. Cage lighting is now available in all forms - wall lights, pendants, even chandeliers and in so many colours - and there is an array of industrial-style pendant lights in coppers and chromes, powder-coated or plain galvanised. If you are keen to add a few elements of the industrial movement to your home, but are concerned about how they will work with the rest of your interiors then there are some more muted, subtle options available. Wall washers that are inspired by the classic terracotta roof tile - but made in metal - provide a warm, soft ambient light and are not too much of a statement that they shout out. The use of black glass and acrylics is also a nice touch, a lovely balance of the delicate and the bold.

110

CO NT EM PO “Here I am, look at me” piece is the finishing touch. RA RY If you are after that ultimate talking piece, then a statement entry light or dining chandelier is definitely the way to do it! There are some radical lighting designers and companies that are making some unique and off the wall lights and lamps that can be better described as illuminated sculpture rather than lights! These jaw droppers best work when the rest of the lighting of the room is subtle and indirect. For example, if you have a shadow gap with subdued, hidden LED lighting or recessed wall washers which provide light but do not draw attention to their source, then a “here I am, look at me” piece is the finishing touch.

Why not source a colourful pendant light and you can then mix colours and tones to really bring the idea to life. Another way to jazz up a room and a design is the addition of colour. We often use a wallpaper or accent wall to do so or add in scatters and soft furnishings to give the interior that pop it needs but, another great way to add a splash of colour is in the lighting itself. A bold table lamp that picks up the colour of your cushions and ties the room together nicely is a lovely touch and is not such a permanent feature that, if you tire of a colour scheme at a later date, it is easily removed. Why not source a colourful pendant light and you can then mix colours and tones to really bring the idea to life. Pop colours work fantastically well but if you are not that brave, a handblown array of glass pendants in soft, muted tones is as breathtaking and tends to work better with more luxurious interiors.

DEVELOPING

MARBELLA By India Baltrán

As Marbella becomes one of the most fashionable and sought after places to live in 2015, and we see the property market taking off once more, we chat to one of the busiest and most successful property developers in town and find out what the future has in store for Marbella’s blossoming property market. Having been in Marbella since 2007, John from Quay Property Group is, without a doubt, one of the most active and hardworking developers on the coast and, as the market continues to grow, he shows no signs of slowing down…

John May

What do you love about Marbella? Marbella offers me the opportunity to combine business with a great lifestyle - and obviously I love the weather. I certainly don’t miss the rain, or the London traffic. Spain suffered terribly during the financial crisis, how did this affect your business? The recession actually worked to my advantage because the crisis sorted out the good building contractors from the bad. Many building companies went bust, or they left Spain, which just left a few good ones here, Quay being one of them. What makes the property market in Marbella different from anywhere else in the world? The property market is so diverse here and it offers many exciting building opportunities, from new build projects to refurbishments. Also, the mix of people in Marbella is so cosmopolitan and the constantly changing population gives Quay the potential to be even more creative. What type of projects do undertake in Marbella? Right now there’s a huge number of building contractors and real estate agents promoting the white, box-like contemporary style villas and apartments. Everywhere you look there’s a billboard promoting the same product. I’m not so sure that at this precise moment there is a big enough market to satisfy the number of companies offering this type of architectural style, so I’m concentrating on refurbishment and home improvement. There are so many existing properties available in Marbella, many of them on fantastic plots, or in nice urbanisations, that need improvements and could be stunning with a bit of work.

What are some of the most exciting or challenging projects that you’ve done? Goodness, there have been so many! I’ve been lucky enough to work with some interesting and famous people who want to create something unique and special. What sets you apart? Why chose you over any other developers? I started work as a bricklayer and worked my way up to senior management level with Laing Homes, one of the biggest UK construction companies at the time. With the wealth of knowledge I acquired, I started my own business. Unlike many other developers here in Marbella, I don’t have to rely on others to help me with technical issues; I can see for myself what is needed, and I’m able to make my own decisions about what action has to be taken. What are your biggest skills and assets? In my opinion, it’s my people management skills, and my expert knowledge of construction. My clients can call me 24/7, and I make sure that I take their call, or reply to their email immediately. That’s a rarity in Marbella! What should a client expect from you? I like to use the phrase “Expect the Exceptional” to get across to customers the level of design and customer care I apply to every job that I’m involved with. It’s important that my clients have 100% trust in Quay to deliver their project to the highest standard. I’m a perfectionist and I won’t accept anything less than quality work. It has been said that my OCD perfectionism drives some people mad, but my clients love it.

117

HOME COUTURE

What is your speciality? I would say that it’s design and build; that includes working closely with clients to design their project from initial drafts on paper to full architectural plans. Technology is now an integral part of modern living and I also specialise in home automation and control, which allows my customers to control their home from a remote device such as their iPad or iPhone. What projects are you currently working on? I have villa refurbishments in Nueva Andalucia and El Madroñal with another exciting project already booked in for the New Year.

Describe what some of the projects range from and to? My projects range from new bathrooms and kitchens to swimming pools, and then building refurbishment to design and new build projects. You do commercial projects as well as residential ones, I believe. Could you describe some of these for me? Yes, I have completed a number of commercial projects. The M P Dunne real estate office on the Golden Mile is one example, and La Casita restaurant in La Heradia is another. There’s also Twist Boutique in San Pedro and (shhhh!) the Essential magazine offices! Which do you enjoy more? To be honest, they’re both about building, so I can’t really choose between them.

118

What is the highlight of your job for you? I really enjoy meeting and working with nice people who appreciate the effort and high standard of finish that I bring to each project. I get a lot of satisfaction from handing over a home, or an office, that has become a reality after starting as a few ideas and a sketch. From commercial properties to private residences, it seems that John has truly cemented his position as one of the most trustworthy and reliable developers on the coast and, as the market continues to blossom, it looks like there will be many more happy customers, whose dream homes have become a reality thanks to Quay Property Group. quaypropertygroup.com

SO MUCH MORE

THAN MEZZE!

“O

Reviewed by Natalie Rose Kern Photos by Julia Roder

h aren’t you lucky! You get to review restaurants for a living!” people exclaim to me all the time. And yes, it is great, especially for food lovers like myself. But there are two downsides to doing this all the time: A. One can become all too blasé about all the fabulous eateries one dines in; restaurant after restaurant, meal after meal, dish after dish, and I can all too easily take the experience for granted… and B. The Curious Case of My Ever Expanding Waistline (and my newfound phobia of the weighing scales). So it was almost with a sigh of dismay that I looked at my diary and realised “No! Not another food review tonight” Surely there can’t be any more restaurants in this town whose menus I haven’t munched my way though and yet, low and behold, up pops Noora Mezze and Shisha Lounge, Puerto Banus’ new Lebanese eaterie. Now, I simply LOVE Lebanese cuisine, and we are short of such establishments in Marbella (I can think of only two others) so it demands to be visited! Noora is located opposite El Corte Inglés, along the bustling strip that is home to Naga, Salt and Pepper and whole array of restaurants serving food from all corners of the Globe and, devoid of neon lights and fancy signs, one could easily overlook this pretty spot, set back behind billowing white canopies and concealed by pretty planted pots and flowers. The setting is charming – a glass chandelier hangs at the entrance and, further in, Moroccan lanterns dangle from posts and rafters and the breeze rushes through the white sheets, creating a delightful outdoor sanctuary. Glass shishas in every colour are lined along the far wall and sanded wooden tables are scattered about, alongside sofas and chairs fashioned from wooden pallets. I pop myself down at a small round table in the corner and begin to unload; camera, computer, books, paper work. I’ve come straight from the office so I’m not travelling light! I examine my surroundings; a couple are lounging back on the pallets and smoking a shisha pipe with such an air of carefree abandon and nonchalance that I am envious and wish that I too could lay back and relax. An elegant mature lady is holding court with a small group of people on a pretty handcrafted wooden banquette around a table and looks up at me with a gracious smile, raising her hand to indicate that she will not be much longer. I smile back and return to my notes… This must be Fetoun.

“Venez! she encourages us, “Let us eat!”

COSTA CUISINE

The SOCIETY team joins me and, moments later, the lady approaches us with courteous greetings and genuine warmth and hospitality. “Pleased to meet you,” I begin, “You must be Fetoun”. “Pleeeeeease” she scoffs, “call me Fi-Fi!” She’s smiling and seems entertained and I like her already. Fi-Fi is dressed in the most fabulously flamboyant Pucci-printed ensemble and she carries herself with such poise as she extends her hand to greet each of us, gesturing to a waiter to rearrange the furniture before sitting down to join us at the table. “Above all I am a hostess,” she tells me,

“I like people to enjoy themselves, to have a good time, enjoy the food, the wine and laugh… that is my passion and that is what this restaurant is for!” It’s barely eight o’clock

but already I can see that all of her guests are indeed having a good time. Noora Mezze has only been open two weeks and the business is in its infancy but her objective is clear - to hold events, soirees and nights that turn into morning, amongst friends and family with all the relaxed and cheerful ambiance of one of her infamous parties or family gatherings. I can only imagine what some of these splendid nights would have entailed, for she is every inch the hostess, ensuring we all have drinks, pottering in and out of the kitchen with requests and commands and beckoning for her friends to come and join us. Fi-Fi introduces her granddaughter, Carla, who she later tells us is the apple of her eye, and she speaks of the young girl’s achievements and education with evident pride and love.

I am wondering to myself how on earth we are going to eat any food with so many of us around the small table so I begin packing up my makeshift office, when Fi-Fi suddenly exclaims: “Mais non! We have prepared the big table!”. I glance around and, having been so caught up in Fi-Fi’s fascinating conversation, had not noticed that a large round table in the centre of the patio had been set, and a waitress and waiter are scurrying about with bowls and dishes. The plates keep on coming – more, and more, and more! It is a veritable feast. We settle ourselves around the vast banquet that has been laid out and there is much laughter as I inform the party of my waistline situation, before eagerly tucking in to a bowl of Hummus to the amusement of our new friends. “Eat, eat!” Fi-Fi insists, passing me a bowl of Babaghanoush or Mutabbal (a hummusstyle dip made with Roasted Aubergine) and urging me to dip my Pitta Bread into it. The table is scattered with dishes and bowls of all shapes and sizes; Dips and Pittas, Koftas and Kebabs, Grilled Halloumi, Tabouleh, Lebanese salads, Skewers of Chicken and Steak, Falafels and many other dishes that I don’t recognise. We pass bowls around, serving each other, helping ourselves to more and describing each delicious dish, before offering it about the table. “Bring the Garlic Sauce!” Fi-Fi exclaims, “You must dip the Chicken Skewers in the Garlic Sauce” …and so it continues throughout the night.

For the next three (perhaps four!) hours we feast joyfully as Fi-Fi recounts endless stories of her childhood, Lebanon, her youth in Marbella (she first arrived here in 1969!) and her colourful and vibrant life. We are engrossed and the only breaks in conversation all night are the fits of uninterrupted laughter as we fight back tears of hilarity. Within no time we are all like old friends and the joking and repartee is incessant. It’s like a family Sunday roast – no better, it’s like Christmas dinner, only without the family squabbling! The desserts are sweet cake-like treats and a dish of Baked Cheese toped with Honey is set down before me and, at Fi-Fi’s insistence, I dive in. As the conversation flows and the Shisha Pipes are brought to the table, I take a wander inside, where the interior is a bohemian mish-mash of eclectic oddities and antiques. A black and white film is being screened onto the far wall from a projector and cinema chairs surround a large wooden table, which one of Fi-Fi’s artist friends explains is his “second office”. The young artist has painted a trompe l’oeil bookcase across the wall and spends most of his time hanging out in this friendly and inviting space. “The idea is to create the kind of vibe of an artist’s atelier, with a certain Parisian bistro je ne sais quoi!” he tells me. French 1950s music is playing, evoking Paris, parties, champagne and dancing, and I for one, am utterly inspired. I may not have solved the Curious Case of My Expanding Waistline, but I have certainly abolished any notion I had of food reviews being mundane and commonplace. This was more than just a meal, it was an experience – one to be savoured and enjoyed… and oh boy, that we did. Noora Mezze & Shisha Lounge Lounge Calle Francisco J. Villalon Cristamar Puerto Banús. THE RAINBOW By Julio Garcia Valdes

M This month, our wine expert, Julio, brings us a delicious roast duck recipe with a tasty wine and cherry sauce and offers us a selection of Montsant wines available from DWine to accompany it

ontsant is a small Catalonian wine region located in the imposing mountain range from which the wines receive their names in the famous Priorat wine region. Though family winemaking in Montsant dates back from Roman times, the area is still an emerging wine region. Founded in 2001, Montsant has earned attention as a source of value red wines that resemble those of Priorat - but for a lot less money. Montsant and Priorat do use many of the same grapes, native old-vines of Grenache and Carignan, known

in Catalonian as Samsó, and in Rioja and Aragon as Mazuelo or Cariñena, remain of what was historically planted in the region, the soil is what makes the big difference. Predominantly clay and granite-like sand, best soils are pebbles of limestone called pinyolet in Montsant versus black slate known as “licorella” in Priorat. Montsant is cooler and higher in elevation than Priorat. The cooler nights allow Garnacha to retain more acidity and make wines that are uplifted, floral, full of fruit and unique.

COSTA CUISINE

THE MOST FOOD IN TOWN Reviewed by Natalie Rose Kern Photos by Julia Roder

D

espite being open a mere six weeks, the Society team are no strangers to Santé - in fact, we’ve been there at least once a week since its ‘soft’ opening party in July, and its already a favourite spot for after-work drinks and lunch meetings – so we thought it high time we see what dinner is like at this uberfashionable boutique restaurant. Santé’s first opening party saw the high society of Marbella congregating on its decked terrace for drinks and canapés before moving inside to dance the night away and, despite being in the middle of July’s insufferable heat wave, all of the town’s coolest movers and shakers were in attendance. Its second and ‘grand’ opening party was a mind blowing affair, boasting acrobats, dancers, jugglers and stilt walkers and, within half an hour of arriving, my face was hurting from the sheer volume of hellos, smiles and greeting kisses delivered, for it seemed that all of Marbella had turned out for this splendid event. To say Santé is stylish is an understatement. It’s ridiculously stylish. Not one stone has been left unturned in the designing and decoration of the restaurant’s interior and you could almost be forgiven for thinking that you were walking into an art gallery or exclusive design showroom, such is the extravagance and ornate detailing of its features – unsurprising perhaps, as the owners also own the luxury interior design studio next door, which offers some of the most exclusive interior furnishings in Marbella. From mismatched designer tables and chairs, funky lighting fixtures and art displayed on the walls (and ceiling!) to black marble floors, a giant crystal chandelier and quirky design details, reflected throughout the restaurant, Santé’s interior is a masterpiece of modern design and sophisticated extravagance.

COSTA CUISINE

It’s bold. It’s brave and well, it really is quite beautiful. Although the décor may be sumptuous and the lighting atmospheric, it’s the people that really make a place - and none more so than Andres and his wife, Silvana, Santé’s manager/manageress dynamic duo. They greet us with open arms and beaming smiles and usher us inside as we marvel over the hand-stitched denim chair made from old pairs of jeans and the show reel of photos of their magnificent opening party, that’s looping on a flat screen television between two luxurious velvet sofas. I head to the bar where I’m met by Sam - another familiar face, from having spent many years burning holes in the dance floor of Suite and Suite del Mar’s nightclubs, where he was the head barman. He has concocted the most fabulous looking Cocktail menu, with choices such as the Cucumber and Lychee Martini, the Spiced Ginger and Whiskey Sour and the Passionfruit and Basil Smash - a cocktail lover’s dream. It’s early evening, the balmy heat is starting to subside and there’s a light breeze blowing through the terrace so we plump for a table outside, under an enormous lamp topped with a giant lampshade that makes me feel like teeny tiny Alice in Wonderland after she’s drunk the “Drink Me” potion. We begin with a selection of starters; Teriyaki Salmon Skewers, Mini Oxtail Burgers with Fries, Homemade Creamy Iberian Ham Croquettes and Provolone Cheese Baked in a Ceramic Pot served with Creole Sauce. It’s a perfect selection as there’s something for all of us to enjoy. The Salmon melts in the mouth and is a deliciously fragrant taste of Thailand, the Mini Burgers are bite-sized and tender, the gooey Argentinian cheese is devoured with bread and forks, topped with spicy sauce and finely chopped onions and peppers and the Croquettes are shared out amongst us and gone within seconds.

Santé has already secured its regulars – a brilliant sign, indicating that Santé will remain a hotspot even when the busy summer season is over. Our main courses arrive; Wok Stir-fry with Chicken, Noodles, Soy and Ginger, Grilled Salmon with Seasoned Vegetables and Asian Sauce, Beef Sirloin with Provencal Oven Baked Potatoes and Wild Mushroom Ravioli with a creamy Black Truffle Sauce. We tuck in eagerly. The Steak is tender; seared on the outside and pink and juicy in the middle and the knife slides through the meat like butter. The Salmon is cooked to perfection and breaks into delicate flakes. The Stir-fry is a generous portion and a great option for all palates as it’s full of flavour but not hot or spicy and the Ravioli… Well, this could well be a new favourite. For such an ordinary looking dish, the taste is simply out of this world. The marriage of Black Truffle and Parmesan is a rich and decadent combination and a real winner! It’s gone 11pm and the terrace is absolutely buzzing with jovial chatter and commotion. Between us we have friends and acquaintances at every table and there’s a wonderful atmosphere of fun and enjoyment as friends and colleagues hop from table to table to chat and catch-up. I decide to go exploring as I’ve heard about the fantastic private dining area downstairs… but nothing prepares me for the splendour that that unfolds as I descend.

A vast space is laid out before me; king sized beds with plush cushions are positioned on either side of the room alongside sofas and grand mirrors. In the centre, chairs surround a large dining table and before me stands a fabulous billiards table – it’s wonderful. I want a party here! Now! When I return from my adventure, I am met with a delectable surprise - Cheesecake with Raspberry Ice cream, Classic Italian Tiramisu, Chocolate Coulant with Vanilla Ice cream and Biscuits with Hazelnut Cream. The dishes are immaculately presented and everything looks delicious. I plunge my spoon into the Chocolate Coulant and the melted Chocolate comes spilling out – it’s divine. The Cheesecake is a baked New York-style variety; rich and creamy with a buttery biscuit base and the Tiramisu is light and fluffy. The biscuits are quite unusual; crispy and wafer like with a gorgeous nutty cream inside. We finish our teas and coffees and the waitress boxes up the remainder of the desserts for me to take home. Santé is a delightful spot for a night out, whether sipping cocktails with the girls or devouring a three-course meal. The cocktails are exquisite, the décor stunning and, if my little boy’s chocolate-covered face after discovering the desserts in the fridge the morning after is anything to go by – the food makes you very, very happy! Santé CC. Puerta Banús 22, Puerto Banús. Tel. 951 196 777 santemarbella.com

The terrace is rapidly filling up and by ten pm all the tables are taken, but not with tourists nor holidaymakers.

Happy Days

reat news for families and anyone who enjoys fun, food and cold beers. After much anticipation Marbellabased recreation company ‘Happy Days’ has launched a trio of family-friendly attractions; a dry ice rink, a pirate-themed mini golf course and an original American Airstream trailer serving tasty US style fast food on San Pedro’s main Boulevard. For those who prefer spectator sports, there is also a big screen showing major international sports events live on Sky. The three attractions occupy approximately 1,000m² of the new pedestrian walkway at the heart of San Pedro, providing cost effective fun activities that can be enjoyed for most of the year. From the 1st of September opening hours will be from 4pm till late Monday to Friday and from 1pm at the weekend. No booking is required and equipment such as skates, protective pads and helmets are available for hire on site, so all you have to do is turn up.

Happy Days sourced the town’s first ecological ice rink from an experienced company that has supplied ecological ice rinks all over the world including Disneyland Paris. Unlike a conventional rink which would use 25,500 kilowatts of energy, over 30,000 litres of water and would emit 8 tons of CO2 in just one month, the synthetic rink needs no power or water for maintenance and produces no harmful emissions, yet provides an authentic ice skating experience. Pascal van den Broek, director of Happy Days says, “San Pedro’s council were

eager to see family friendly attractions open on the new Boulevard, and we immediately saw the potential in offering a range of different activities within the same area. Even though they’re essentially children’s attractions, ice rinks and mini golf also appeal to adults’ sense of fun, and we’ve had fantastic feedback about the original Airstream burger van. We’re thrilled to be able to play a part in the regeneration of San Pedro”. rom the guys that brought you the world’s first ever coconut water ice lolly, OkoBay has just launched its Coconut Milk Ice Creams to add to the deliciously coconutty OkoBay Family. Already making a big name for themselves in the health food world, OkoBay ice creams are dairy free, lactose free, soy free, egg free, GMO free and certified both vegan and vegetarian - So they are suitable for even the strictest vegan or the most allergic lactose intolerance sufferer! The beauty of OkoBay is that it’s delicious as well as nutritious! Creamy, fresh and thirst-quenching, the ice creams and lollies are a novel approach to iced desserts and offer a fabulous alternative for children to the sugar-drenched ice creams that are flooding the market.

OkoBay’s ice creams and lollies are sweet and tasty but without any of the chemicals, E-numbers, additives and harmful yucky stuff that other ice creams contain! The whole range of ice creams, which includes coconut and chocolate as well as pineapple flavours, contains only natural ingredients and promises to have up to 50% less sugar than other leading ice cream brands.

OkoBay’s founder and Marbella local, Darryn Welch explains: “We milk the coconuts by rubbing the flesh with water to create the milk. Without a cow in sight it’s perfect as a dairy substitute and not bad for your health either! In fact, with fibre, multivitamins, minerals and even a fat that protects against viruses and infections, it’s the future of ice cream!” OkoBay is available in Hipercor, Supercor, El Corte Inglés and select locations. okobay.com
