PUBLISHER’S LETTER

Society Marbella published and produced by:
Well, here’s September and we still appear to be enjoying all the advantages of summer without the worst of the heat. What’s not to love? This issue of SOCIETY has a distinctly artistic feel, thanks to an interview with international art expert, Corinne Lewin who, we are pleased to say, has recently settled in Marbella and opened the Atrium Gallery. The success of the city’s annual art expo has uncovered a real local enthusiasm for the subject, so we are very pleased to be able to bring you this exclusive interview with this engaging, forward thinking and formidably successful Monegasque and find out more about her ideas and plans for the future. On that very same subject, we all thoroughly enjoyed 2016’s Art Marbella and offer a summary of this perennially popular gathering of the Coast’s artists and art enthusiasts. We all know that ‘Marbs’ is a great holiday destination, packed with superb beaches, great bars and restaurants and some of the best clubs in Spain, but it’s also great to see Marbella showing its more cultured face. Talking about art, this month will hopefully mark the release of Tim Burton’s latest project, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. There is nobody quite like Burton currently working within the Hollywood system and everything he does shows that here is a man with a unique visual sense. Maybe it’s because he’s first and foremost a trained artist that critics and audiences have been flocking to enjoy his weird and – occasionally – macabre visions for the past three decades. It looks as though his latest movie will be just as successful as his previous projects, which have included Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood and Mars Attacks!
This month we also welcome our new relationship expert onboard. Sam Owen is a relationships coach, psychologist and author and is regularly consulted by TV channels and brands. This month she reveals that sounds speak louder than words when it comes to the speed of brain reactions. It sounds as though this is one battle we fellas are doomed to lose! If you’re interested in alternative healing methods then our Eleanor McKenzie, author of The Reiki Bible, explains how this Japanese system can have major health benefits, while Rachel Cohen of the High Care Clinic explains how many oncologists are now incorporating the ancient Chinese system of acupuncture into their cancer treatments. After a period of fairly intense hostility it looks as though mainstream and complementary forms of medicine are learning how to work together successfully. Who doesn’t love a sleek, beautifully designed sports car? It seems Mercedes’s new AMG GT R is going to be the next big thing according to Ian Kuah – look at those lines! Not that we’re jealous or anything. No, we love working hard when he has had the fun of test driving this beauty. Honestly. Talking about design, how do you fancy giving one of your rooms a space-age theme? FOC’s Amy-Rose McDowell offers a guide that should give you some ideas about how to transform your home, whether you’re just looking for a new direction or think that the Starship Enterprise is the last word in style. There were plenty of events in August and, if you attended any of them, you can’t miss our Who’s In Who’s Out section. Were you caught on camera? There’s only one way to find out – turn to pages 80 to 89! Till next time... Andy Clark

Celebrity Spotlight
Corinne Lewin is a Monegasque and a beautiful, charismatic woman who sparkles with energy and welcomes me with kindness. I decided to start by taking some portraits of Corinne in her recently launched Atrium Gallery; after all what better place is there than ‘home’ to make her feel comfortable and ensure that I get some shots of her that reveal her true personality as well as display the gallery space to great effect. Atrium Gallery was launched in superlative style on 24 May 2016 with Marbella’s mayor, Jose Bernal doing the honours of cutting the ribbon. Marbellís flocked to this opening event and it seems from the exhaustive guest list that Corinne had invited the whole town to the party. The gallery is in Marbella’s centre near the Piruli copper tower and to celebrate the launch, video art projections cloaked the entire façade of the building in dramatic and colourful images that stopped many a passerby, and many were attracted by the live music at the event as well. The success of the opening night is down to the fact that Corinne and her team, including communications experts Strategy 2 Web, are perfectionists who pay close attention to every detail. I was delightfully surprised on my visit to the gallery for the photo shoot and interview to find that it is more reminiscent of a gallery in a major city; the works on show with their bright colours and edgy themes aroused feelings of the anxiety and instability that reflect the present culture. I wasn’t expecting this from a gallery in the Marbella area and it is plain to see that Corinne is not going to sacrifice the content displayed in her gallery for the sake of appealing to an audience that may prefer less challenging works of art. Of course, Marbella has really started to make some progress in terms of art exhibitions and art galleries in the last two years, and many of the world’s major art collectors own stunning residences here, which is a major business factor in bringing respected gallery owners, such as Corinne, to the coast. It is no accident that this
savvy businesswoman has arrived in Marbella in 2016; she knows exactly when the time is right to open a gallery in a new destination thanks to her decade of experience in buying art for galleries and private buyers. Her desire for Atrium is to enhance the relationship between artists and buyers, and Marbella is the location where she believes this will work well, perhaps thanks to the intimate size of the place.
What is the most important aspect of Atrium and what it offers? I have spent many years of my life in the art world. When I was a child my family worked in the art business and I grew up seeing art as an important manifestation of social and cultural wealth. My experience as
“
It’s my aim to develop relationships between buyers and artists and maintain a more meaningful relationship.
“
I
t’s not every day that you can sit and have a chat with one of the most respected international influencers in the art world, so it was a real pleasure to be able to find out a little more about this gallery owner who has recently moved into town.
an art consultant for various galleries in cities around the world—mainly Monte Carlo, New York, Los Angeles and Miami—led me to set up Atrium as a gallery that focuses on buyers commissioning work from my artists rather than simply coming in to purchase existing pieces. It’s my aim to develop relationships between buyers and artists and maintain a more meaningful relationship. It takes the art beyond just being another commodity that is instantly available and encourages the buyer to become more of a collector who is engaged in the process of creating a piece of art. I am extremely passionate about the artists that I represent; currently at Atrium we have Karl Lagasse, The Rigoleur, Curro Leyton, Ana Tonica, Lala Van Der Veken, Martin X, Marc Boffin, Javier Infantes, Sol Felpeto and Debbie Lush on the roster. Some of them are local artists, while others are from much further afield, so that visitors to the gallery are able to enjoy work from a range of cultural backgrounds.
What do you think are the key ingredients of your success? I believe that experience shows and I have plenty of that. I am always looking at what is happening in the art world and keeping an eye out for upcoming trends. When I combine my constant curiosity with my business ‘Know How’ that I have accumulated while working as an art consultant, I feel confident that I’m offering clients a great place to buy art that has been sourced with passion and integrity, and a sympathetic space for artists where they feel their work is cared for and promoted in a professional way. I follow my artists very closely because I care about them as people as well as the creators of art; I visit them at their studios and we are in constant communication. I’m particular about artistic work being documented correctly so that my clients and artists never have any issues with provenance. My buyers also remark that one of the reasons that they keep coming back to me is my attention to every detail and my unique approach to selling art. My artists are happy with me because I make sure that they can live from their work and keep creating more art in the best conditions.
How do you find artists to represent? Is there any advice you could give to people who might be interested in discovering new and upcoming artists? Socialites are excellent at scouting for new artists and will often send me messages on a daily basis about an artist they have just met or whose gallery they have visited. I also encourage people to drop into Atrium and chat to me about artists they have seen. I also like to make my gallery a welcoming place where artists feel they can drop in and have a chat to me and show me their work. If they aren’t able to physically visit the gallery, then they can contact me via Instagram or email. (These details are at the end of the article.) I’m not sure that I have any advice for people who would like to break into this world, but I can tell you one thing; it is not enough to be talented. If you want to make a living from art you must take it very seriously. Art takes hard work, time, dedication and passion; if an artist does not have self-belief and faith in their work then that shows in the art as a lack of truth and conviction.

How does somebody like you who is sensitive to art manage to survive in such a competitive world? My sensitivity is not something fragile; it is my strength. I am an educated woman who likes to work in a polite and respectful atmosphere with people who share my values and take the business seriously. What I detest are the people who think they are so clever and try to take advantage. I have a good legal team to deal with these types of people.
There was a press announcement some weeks back from Atrium’s PR team about a marriage between Art and Rap. What was that about? Oh yes, I am the ‘Godmother’ of an upcoming art event in 2017 involving Wu-Tang Clan. I’m delighted to say that the Trendeez Company, which is part of the Wu Tang Clan Project 2017, visited the gallery in Marbella and met with the mayor Jose Bernal. The exhibition when it opens is called “Made in Wu Tang” and it will tour Paris, Brussels and London. Monte Carlo has yet to be confirmed, but the Atrium gallery team is working very hard with the mayor and the municipality to make sure that this Wu Tang exhibition also arrives in Marbella. The Wu Tang Clan is bound to attract residents, new buyers and tourists, because after all the music these guys made is known to millions.
Before we finish, I wanted to ask you about your ‘Artists at Home’ service. This is part of my desire to bring artists and clients closer together. For example. perhaps you have a piece of furniture that you’d like customised, or you have a wall that maybe needs a large painting or a mural. With this service, the artists visit you at home and work with you to realise the concept you have in mind. Some clients come in knowing exactly what they want, whereas others have a vague idea; whatever the situation, my creative team studies all the projects very carefully and come up with the best artistic solution. I like to think of it as luxury meets an artistic event.
Thank you Corinne for a wonderful and inspiring time. Atrium Gallery certainly seems set a new trend in Marbella art galleries and play an important role in placing Marbella even more firmly on the global art map. Atrium Gallery Avd. is Art Marbella 2016 wows the crowds and art collectors for the second year running. By Eleanor McKenzie
A
rt Marbella returned to town for the second year running for five days and if the opening press night was anything to judge by, this reprise of the boutique art fair that is intimate, inviting and easy to navigate, received a warm welcome from the city of Marbella. TV crews and journalists mingled with Marbella’s leading citizens, including the mayor José Bernal, who strolled through the exhibition with the look of a man who is quietly confident that his city has much to offer the art world, and clearly the gallery owners who had turned up to take part, felt the same way.
Whilst it is true that the majority of the exhibiting galleries were from across Spain, it is a cause for celebration that others had arrived with the works of their top artists from Brazil, Argentina and Colombia, the USA, Taiwan, Morocco, Switzerland, France and Italy. Furthermore, these are gallery owners with long track records of appearing at the largest international fairs including Miami Art Basel, Frieze and ARCO. The fact that they have placed their confidence in Art Marbella and its director Alejandro Zaia, says a lot about the man and Marbella as an art-buying destination. Zaia’s belief in the project is evident and he commented to press, “Marbella has become the meeting point for contemporary art lovers during the summer.” This is excellent news for Marbella and the growing number of galleries that have opened here in recent years, such as Timeless Gallery in Puerto Banús, Moretti & Moretti and Art Wanson in Marbella Club Hotel and Magpie Gallery in Marbella centre. STOA Gallery from Estepona, Art Wanson and Pedro Peña gallery, all had stands at Art Marbella 2016 making sure the locals were represented. It was also good to see Ibermaison hosting the VIP Lounge where guests were treated to a choice of gin or vodka, which made a refreshing change from the usual wine or beer, especially in the summer heat, whilst Tu Otra Cocina delivered inspired and delicious nibbles. The space at the Palacio de Congresos is the perfect size for a

Everyday Life by Mr. Brainwash; Galería Hispánica Contemporánea boutique art fair; it is compact enough to prevent the visitor from getting lost, whilst also large enough to ensure that each gallery has sufficient square metres to allow you to view the works close up as well as from a distance.
Anyone who has attended one of the large international fairs, such as Miami Art Basel, will know that navigating the layout of a major event—especially finding your way back to that painting or sculpture you just wanted to have
Matchstickmen by Wolfgang Stiller another look at—may require the kind of map-reading skills employed in orienteering. Comfortable footwear is another thing to put on your ‘must have’ list for a big fair, but at Art Marbella, your Jimmy Choo’s will do the job just fine. One thing that must be said about Art Marbella is that it is always full of surprises. The 2016 edition of the
fair contained works by recognised Spanish artists like Miki Leal, Angela de la Cruz, Rafael Canogar, Miquel Barceló, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, Jorge de Oteiza and Juan Gris, alongside international names such as Shirin Neshat, Eugene J. Martin, Liliana Porter and Peter Zimmermann, amongst the large number of important artists. It is part of the fair’s charm that one moment you may
looking at the work of a contemporary and local artist, and around the corner you find yourself standing in front of a name from the annals of art history. This year, the artist whose work certainly stood out, partly because it was well positioned near the entrance was that of Mr. Brainwash. With a ‘name’ like that, this work, exhibited by Hispánica Contemporándea was bound to draw
25
Banksy Thrower attention. Mr. Brainwash, or MBW, is the artistic name of French film maker Thierry Guetta who lives and works in Los Angeles. He originally made films about street art created by Obey (Shepard Fairey) whose work can be seen in the Soho area of Málaga. Through his film work he eventually met the legendary Banksy and from then on turned his attention from filming street artists to creating street art himself. He had his first major exhibition “Life is Beautiful” in 2008 and is also well known for his film “Exit Through the Gift Shop” that was directed by none other than Banksy. And, his work that grabbed the visitors most at Art Marbella was titled “Throwing Banksy” in which a masked street protestor hurls a copy of “Art for Dummies” across the canvas, rather than a petrol bomb. The book is immediately recognizable as being one of the ‘Dummies” series and MBW often uses icons of consumer culture and celebrity figures in his work. Artika from Spain brought a new aspect of art to the fair. It is a Spanish publishing company that produces limited edition art books and this year they brought “Garagatos” by Joaquín Sabina to Marbella. Artika publishes these books as works of art; they are definitely not books about art, and each edition of the work is hand signed by the artist and certified by a notary. Garagatos is in a limited edition of 4,998 copies and contains vibrantly coloured drawings creating a universe filled with princesses, legends, muses and many other fascinating elements. Galerie Mark Hachem from Paris clearly had a good time at Art Marbella 2015 when it drew many visitors with some outstanding work by a Japanese artist. This year, German artist Wolfgang Stiller’s
26
“Matchstickmen” was its crowd puller. The human size matchsticks with human heads were mesmerizing and a comparison with China’s Terracotta Army seems appropriate. It takes a lot of hard work to put on an art fair and a big thanks must go to the many local and international sponsors who made sure that everything from the transportation and security of artworks to the hosting of VIP events— hosted by The Marbella Club, Puente Romano, Trocadero and Villa Padierna -- made sure the occasion was a success. Art Marbella 2016 may be over, but we can’t wait to see it return in 2017.

Over the course of the next sixteen years, life and love will offer them very different challenges. Separated by distance and fate, there’s no way the two of them are ever going to meet each other properly - or is there?
The Thousandth Floor By Katherine McGee A hundred years in the future, New York’s elite of the super-tower lie, backstab and betray each other to find their place at the top of the world. Everyone wants something - and everyone has something to lose. As the privileged inhabitants of the upper floors recklessly navigate the successes and pitfalls of the luxury life, forbidden desires are indulged and carefree lives teeter on the brink of catastrophe, while lower-floor workers are tempted by a world – and unexpected romance – dangling just out of reach. And on the thousandth floor is Avery Fuller, the girl genetically designed to be perfect. The girl who seems to have it all, yet is tormented by the one thing she can never have. So when a young woman falls from the top of the supertower, her death is the culmination of a scandal that has ensnared the top-floor elite and bottom-floor. But who plummeted from the roof? And what dark secrets led to her fall? Friends will be betrayed and enemies forged as promises are broken. When you’re this high up, there’s nowhere to go but down.

Tim Burton: The Wizard of Odd

A teenager who can see the deceased former inhabitants of her home; a man with scissors for hands; a boy who reanimates his dead dog with mixed results; a bride who also happens to be a corpse; these are just a few examples of director Tim Burton’s dark and febrile imagination. Successfully working inside the Hollywood system, yet retaining his reputation as an independent filmmaker, Burton has spent more than 30 years successfully entertaining – and traumatising – an army of devoted fans.

ust what is it about Tim Burton that he can get away with dancing on the dark side, while retaining his position as one of Hollywood’s favourite sons? America’s movie industry is famously mainstream, but if you prefer your thrills to come from left field, then Burton is surely your man. Somehow the two shouldn’t marry, but they do and this black sheep of the Hollywood family has now successfully been working as an animator, producer, writer and director since 1980.
Born in Burbank, California on August the 25th 1958, the young Tim soon showed his aptitude for filmmaking, putting together films in his back garden using a crude stop motion animation technique. One of his first completed efforts was The Island of Doctor Agor, an appropriately off-thewall indication of how his extraordinary mind worked. On leaving school he enrolled at the California Institute of the Arts to study character animation, after which he was offered an animator’s apprenticeship by the Walt Disney Corporation on the strength of his student project, Stalk of the Celery Monster. While not necessarily sharing the traditional family values espoused by the Disney Corporation, Burton was clearly determined to make the most of his time there, working as an animator, storyboard artist and concept artist on a number of big budget feature films, including The Fox and the Hound, The Black Cauldron and

Tron. In 1982 he completed Vincent, a six-minute stop-motion animation film based on a poem he had written, the first mature example of his imaginative scope. Burton did have moments of success while at Disney (his Japanesethemed version of Hansel and Gretel was enthusiastically praised) but his next live-action short led to Disney firing him. Shot in black and white, Frankenweenie told the story of a young boy who tries to breathe new life into his dog when it’s run over by a car and was clearly of little use to the corporation. Burton was informed that his film was too macabre and ‘scary’ for children to see and was, therefore, of little use to the creators of Mickey Mouse. He had the last laugh when, in 2012, he was able to complete an animated version of Frankenweenie, which was hailed a success by critics and audiences alike. Burton might have been left holding the American equivalent of his P45 card, but it didn’t take long for him to show that he had what it took to make a success of his prodigious – if somewhat off-beat – talent. After a collaboration with Pee-Wee Herman, Burton’s first proper Hollywood success came in 1988 with Beetlejuice. Made on a comparatively modest budget, this feature film provides the first real, sustained evidence of his typically skewed creative mind and led to a spin-off cartoon series that was screened on ABC and Fox. Even more importantly, it’s clever combination of macabre humour and social comment led to even bigger things for Burton, as he was handed the responsibility of relaunching the Batman franchise in 1989. Michael Keaton (who played the title character in Beetlejuice) was

cast as Batman, while Jack Nicholson turned in a typically deranged performance as The Joker. Released in June 1989, Batman was backed by a sophisticated and aggressive merchandising campaign and was a massive box office hit, taking more than $250 million in the US and $400 million worldwide. With the addition of a clever soundtrack by Prince (who successfully propelled the movie into the pop charts courtesy of his hit, ‘BatDance’), Burton duly received his crown as Hollywood’s Next Big Thing. This resounding success so comparatively early in his career meant that Burton has been free

to dance to his own particular drummer for several decades and has embraced that freedom to work on anything that interests him. This might include progressing the Batman story further (Batman Returns), revisiting the suburban Gothic sensibilities that inspired Beetlejuice in Edward Scissorhands or bringing Roald Dahl’s unruly children’s stories to riotous life in James and the Giant Peach and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. He has also retained his fascination with animation, using it to create dark tales such as The Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride and Frankenweenie.

are like an “Movies expensive form of therapy for me.
Tim Burton might have managed to retain a childlike sensibility, but there is nothing remotely childish about his movies, which is possibly why his longterm collaboration with Johnny Depp has been so successful. There are few actors who so perfectly inhabit Burton’s benignly twisted visions, contributing his complex and unique combination of wonder and worldliness. Over the years Burton has also relied on his relationships for inspiration. Formally married only once (to German artist Lena Gieseke), his two long-term partnerships have acted as creative sparks. His first live-in actress girlfriend, Lisa-Marie Smith appeared in Ed Wood
(a fascinating biopic about a filmmaker almost as eccentric as Burton himself) and Mars Attacks! After meeting Helena Bonham Carter on the set of his 2001 reworking of Planet of the Apes she also went on to appear in Burton’s version of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Dark Shadows and both of his CGI powered Alice in Wonderland movies. Their separation in 2014 was entirely amicable, leading to many gossip columnists proposing that here was more evidence of the pair’s weirdness, a rumour that had been started years before by news that Burton and Bonham Carter lived in adjoining houses with their two children, linked by a passageway.
His latest film, an adaptation of Ransom Riggs’s novel, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, is scheduled to be released shortly. With a cast that includes Eva Green, Judi Dench, Rupert Everett, Terence Stamp and Samuel L. Jackson and an advertising poster that evokes the visual strangeness of Edward Scissorhands, it looks as though audiences can look forward to another dose of Burtonian fantasy.

The Wizard of Odd doesn’t look as though he’s willing to relinquish his title just yet.

R
esearch suggests vocals sounds are a faster and easier way to get your loved one’s attention away from their smartphone, and instead towards you, than a sentence expressing your feelings. Good news for all, especially those fed up with talking to their partner’s cheek or scalp! Primitive methods for communicating emotions (for example, a laugh, groan, growl or cry), referred to as non-linguistic vocalisations, seem to be detected by the brain faster and more clearly than emotions being conveyed through tone of voice or words used. Building on a previous research findings from the field, Pell et al. (2015) tested participants using words with no emotional meaning such as, “He placktered the tozz”, which were conveyed with a happy, sad or angry tone of voice and compared this with when participants listened to vocal sounds that had no linguistic components (e.g. a laugh, growl or cry). Key findings were as follows: It takes the brain just one-tenth of a second to begin detecting human emotions from a vocal sound, faster than detecting it from their tone of voice, regardless of whether it was a positive or negative emotion being conveyed. Both angry sounds and angry words produced a longer effect on the brain as measured by its lengthened brain activity.
The reason for this difference, noted on electroencephalograms (EEGs), seems to be linked to the use of vocalisations when language was less sophisticated and interpreting nonverbal communication had an even greater need for survival. Such ancient skills, however, still serve us now. The researchers state: “In human communication, vocalizations are

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR
considered a “raw” form of emotional expression in the vocal channel because they are often the spontaneous product of reflexive (neuro) physiological responses to an emotional event (Bostanov & Kotchubey, 2004) without precise articulatory targets (Trouvain, 2014).” In other words, they are more instinctive than the thought-out expression of emotion using words and tone of voice. Therefore, they rapidly convey the emotions a person is feeling within a flash.
Furthermore, the researchers also state: “In the neuro-imaging literature, there is evidence that vocalizations predominantly activate the amygdala and other subcortical structures… whereas this evidence is less consistent for emotional prosody…” In other words, the parts of the brain that are primarily responsible for emotions, emotional behaviour and motivation (the amygdale) – amongst other brain structures – become activated when
processing vocalisations yet this is not so consistently seen in the research looking at the brain’s response to the tone of one’s speech. Therefore, there seems to be a strong connection, most interestingly, between vocalisations and emotions.
Applications of Non-Linguistic Vocalisations The modern world is full of distracted, pre-occupied people and when we want someone’s attention we can be frustrated that they’re not listening. There’s likely been a time when you’ve thought, surely they can tell from my tone of voice that I want their: attention for support because I’m sad acknowledgement that I’m angry to share in my joy because I’m happy. Well, perhaps they can’t tell because they’re so preoccupied with their own thoughts, or the cyber-world, that they fail to give you attention when you think they should know you want it. Admittedly it’s frustrating when people clearly aren’t in the present moment with you, as you note from their glazed eyes or inappropriate verbal response. If you do this to others, you too are adding to their frustration levels and it can show a certain lack of respect. So if you want to get someone’s attention very quickly, OR want to reassure them instantly that you’re present and hearing exactly what they’re saying, it can be useful to use such non-linguistic vocalisations to clearly and rapidly convey that a twoway communication is taking place. As a coach this is particularly useful when I’m working with a client and they are in full swing, telling me something very important. I can convey my emotional response so that they know I am following along and truly hearing what they’re saying, without having to interrupt or overshadow their dialogue with my own.
If you want to get someone’s attention very quickly... it can be useful to use non-linguistic vocalisations to clearly and rapidly convey that a two-way communication is taking place.
If you were on a first date trying to build rapport, or listening to a loved one saying something significant, or wanting to let your boss know you understand the enormity of what has happened, empathic non-linguistic vocalisations may help you. Using nonlinguistic vocalisations you can build rapport and relationships by being able to convey in less than a second that you ‘get them’, understand what they’re conveying, that you’re alert and present, and that you care. That’s incredibly powerful when building relationships and you can do this fast and clearly in less than a second! Let others fumble over their words while you get ahead with your succinct, poignant vocalisations.

THE B-LITE BREAST IMPLANT Cirumed leads the way in the ‘lighter’ implant revolution
O
ver recent years, Cirumed has become one of Marbella’s most successful brands, not only within Spain, but also far beyond. Cirumed’s surgeons fly to countries across the globe to give lectures at international conferences. Director, Dr. Alexander Aslani, who is also formal Head of the Plastic Surgery Departments of Hospital Quiron Málaga and Quiron Marbella, is frequently invited to perform demosurgeries for other surgeons, mostly because of Cirumed’s expertise in advanced body contouring procedures for breast and buttocks. The Cirumed Clinic has established a healthy reputation for pairing an unmatched surgical track record during a decade of experience together with a constant striving for innovation. In light of this, Cirumed has now become one of only two centres in Spain which is able to offer B-Lite lightweight breast implants. B-Lite implants are based on high-quality German cohesive gel technology, which has been used in conventional breast implants. However, B-Lite implants are around 30 per cent lighter. “The effect on our breast surgery practice is dramatic,” says Dr. Alexander Aslani, who founded Cirumed back in 2006.
“At present, the weight of breast implants is the most significant factor determining the longevity of breast surgery results. The heavier the implants, the more weight stress on the breast; heavy breast implants cause tissue to stretch, thinning of breast tissue and sagginess. Withstanding 30 per cent less weight is a distinct advantage.” The impact may best be appreciated using the following calculation: An average conventional breast implant may be around 300cc and weighs 300grams. The volume and weight percentages are usually identical. A B-Lite breast implant with the same
40
300cc volume only weighs 200 grams, which is 100 grams less. Say you take 3,000 steps a day – the weight stress on your breast is reduced by 30kg every single day. “This will totally change the face of breast surgery for all our patients, especially those who are prone to saggy breasts, exercise a lot or need to change old, heavy implants,” says Dr. Aslani. “Since they are based on a very established German technology, their safety has been approved and there is very little difference in surgical technique.” The introduction of B-Lite implants at Cirumed firmly sets the clinic apart from others in the field and marks them as a main contributor to Marbella’s image as the place for breast surgery.

FRESH FACED AT PURESKIN Sofia Saide of PureSkin on Marbella’s Golden Mile tells Society about her search for the best facial treatments.
W
hen Sofia Saide started PureSkin she had a singular intention; to provide high quality skincare treatments that would improve the texture and quality of her clients’ skin. Furthermore, Sofia wanted to deliver a relaxing spa-like experience as well as facials that were significantly better than the standard offering. Sofia’s first step was to source the best skincare brands for her facials. Her first choice was Intraceuticals, an Australian brand. Its Oxygen Infusion facial delivers various weights of hyaluronic acid combined with vital skin-enhancing ingredients such as Vitamins A, C & E as well as Aloe Vera and Green Tea to the various layers of the skin. This brand has many fans and garners testimonials from various celebrities, including Madonna, who never gives a testimonial for anything!!
from PureSkin to use at home and Sofia reports that they never disappoint and that it is the top selling brand in the PureSkin boutique. But, if you’re not a fan of steam and extraction, Sofia has an excellent alternative; it is the Bee Venom Facial from the UK’s Deborah Mitchell who is famed for giving facials to the Duchesses of Cambridge and Cornwall. This facial
Sofia calls Ling her “guru of glow” and swears that her facials provide the deepest cleanse that Sofia has encountered in her 30-year career.
Her next step in the pursuit of excellence was a trip to New York and a visit to the Big Apple’s hottest ‘facialist’ Ling Chan who is a favourite with Hollywood actors, fashion designers and Victoria’s Secret models. According to Sofia, Ling’s facials are truly special and she attributes much of PureSkin’s success to her use of Ling’s methods. Indeed, Sofia calls Ling her “guru of glow” and swears that her facials provide the deepest cleanse that Sofia has encountered in her 30-year career. Following Ling’s technique, Sofia uses steam and extraction in this treatment, a method that is fading from use. The extraction process is aided by the use of a variety of very light peels that ensure your skin is not stripped of its natural oils and the skin is left feeling really clean as well as hydrated. Of the Ling facials, Sofia’s absolute favourite is the Triple Peel Energy Lift Facial that leaves the skin feeling clean, hydrated and rejuvenated. This is a two-hour treatment and it ticks all the boxes of what a facial should be: it is deep cleansing, relaxing, and the use of an infrared device to infuse anti-ageing serums into the skin is the icing on the cake. The only side effect is that it is difficult to get off the couch afterwards. You can buy Ling’s products

lasts for about an hour and incorporates a cleanse and a skin polish made from a blend of organic liquid sugar cane, aloe vera and calendula. The use of the Bee Venom extract tricks the skin into thinking it has been stung; this triggers a healing response from the skin that includes increasing the production of collagen and elastin. The Bee Venom mask is available for purchase at PureSkin so you can try it at home. The prestigious Diamond facials from Spanish brand Natura Bissé are also on the PureSkin menu and one of Sofia’s favourites incorporates a carboxy glycol peel that fizzes up like champagne to gently remove the layer of dead skin and allow the other ingredients to penetrate more effectively. Or, perhaps you’d choose Hydrafacial, the treatment ‘du jour’ loved by Kate Winslet and Beyoncé.
The choice at PureSkin is incredible and you’re bound to find a facial you fall in love with here – Sofia and her team are waiting to welcome you. PureSkin Boutique Spa C.C. Oasis Business Centre L.3B Bulevar Príncipe Alfonso de Hohenlohe Golden Mile Tel. 951 13 49 83 pureskin.es

Walking. There is no doubt that getting outside and taking in the wider world provides
us with a physical workout AND a mental change and break. The physical effect of power walking is greater than is often appreciated. In an industry that pushes HIIT training fairly extensively, moderate exercise often takes a back seat and it shouldn’t. Mental benefits aside for a moment, using moderate cardiovascular exercise pre-breakfast allows your body to most effectively access its own fat reserves and perform at an optimal level. Psychologically, it’s a great change of scene and the effects of oxygen, endorphins and dopamine on the degree of high self-concept is clear and powerful. If you can, walk for 30-45 mins every day before breakfast. When you get chance, go to some hills, woodland trails or coastline routes and spend a couple of hours walking and taking it all in.

Team Sports.
This could be anything from netball and football, right through to cycling with a group or tennis with friends or as part of a club. The social effect of exercising is powerful physically AND mentally. Physically, you are considerably more likely to stay on a programme if you are doing something with friends or in a group than you are on your own. Adherence rates are higher over the course of 12 months when working with a buddy, and this is critical to your physical success. Psychologically, you aren’t on your own and you are sharing the experiences, the highs and the lows, and realising that the difficult spells are not unique to you when it comes to exercise (or anything else for that matter!).
Yoga. This has been shown for generations to have very strong psychological benefits, alongside some great physical gains. Good yoga teachers understand the ebbs and flows of a person’s energy and confidence and can work to help this. The practice of getting into, holding, and moving out of postures again requires great physical skill and mental concentration. The breathing patterns that are taught and required to undergo the yoga discipline also provide valuable decreases in blood pressure, greater oxygen intake and can help muscle relaxation. Choose the type of yoga that suits your needs and personality and talk to the instructor to really establish your personal needs, but make this part of your overall routine alongside your cardiovascular and resistance training.

ACUPUNCTURE FOR THE ONCOLOGY PATIENT
T
he combination of complementary and traditional western medicine is increasingly used in health care sectors across the world and is known as Integrative Medicine. In Integrative Oncology, mainstream treatment, including surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, is used in conjunction with complementary therapies to treat side effects brought on by these treatments and to treat the overall well-being of oncology patients. The Integrative Oncology Department at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre in New York states: “Integrative oncology combines the best of mainstream care and complementary therapies to control physical and emotional symptoms, to improve quality of life and to speed recovery. Acupuncture is a form of complementary medicine frequently used in conjunction with mainstream medicine for cancer care. Its role includes: Supportive Treatment Symptom Management Preventive Care Acupuncture can be used in all phases of cancer treatment.

For the pre-surgical patient, acupuncture promotes relaxation, prevents side effects and alleviates symptoms. The optimum time for treatment is two days before surgery. Post surgery, acupuncture helps with pain control, decreases swelling, helps to prevent scar tissue contraction and shortens the recovery time. Radiation and Chemotherapy are standard treatments in cancer care as they are very effective in the destruction of cancer cells. Unfortunately, these treatments also destroy fast reproducing healthy cells in the skin, bone marrow, intestines, hair follicles and the reproductive system. Acupuncture may improve

The following side effects of radiation and chemotherapy can be alleviated with acupuncture: Fatigue Anaemia Low White Blood Cell Count Nausea & Vomiting Diarrhoea Vertigo Sensitivity to Cold Shortness of Breath Loss of Appetite Bleeding Infection Toxicity Hepatic Dysfunction Neuropathy For patients who are having a Bone Marrow Transplant while undergoing Chemotherapy, Acupuncture helps the immune system to prepare for the transplant and relaxes the patient before the procedure. How does Acupuncture work? Specific point combinations have been shown to increase antibodies, T-cell count, haemoglobin and red blood cells, white blood count (especially neutrophils), normalize irregular heartbeat, regulate blood pressure, improve peristalsis of the oesophagus and the intestines, regulate stomach acid secretion and help to stabilize peripheral nerve damage. Relax Yourself…. with Reiki I
Reiki is a Japanese system of healing with energy. In this introduction to the practice, Eleanor McKenzie author of “The Reiki Bible” explores its origins and benefits.
first came across Reiki in 1992 when a friend lent me a copy of “Empowerment Through Reiki” by Paula Horan. I read it in a day and decided immediately that I wanted to learn this Japanese practice of self-healing that could also be used to help others. Little did I guess at the time that only a few years later UK publisher Hamlyn would commission my first book, “Healing Reiki” (1998) followed in 2009 by “The Reiki Bible.” Back in 1992, it took me months of research to find a Reiki teacher in the UK (there was no Google then) whereas now, Reiki treatments and classes are widely available in just about every country. It has moved from being something weird and wonderful into a mainstream practice that is offered in hospitals and clinics, particularly in oncology services. So, what is it and how can it benefit you?
UNIVERSAL ENERGY
The word ‘reiki’ means ‘universal life energy’. The concept of a universal life force is found in many Eastern traditions: it is prana in yoga, chi or
qi in Traditional Chinese Medicine that then became ki in Japanese. Everything in the universe is created from this energy – your body and La Concha mountain are both created from ki. This is the energy that unites the universe and it means that we are constantly interacting with and influencing each other as though we were one gigantic body.
THE ORIGINS OF REIKI
Mikao Usui developed the system of using ki at the end of the 19th century and you could say that it is a practice that is both ancient and modern. Modern because it has only been in use for just over 100 years and ancient because Mikao Usui drew on the esoteric traditions of Tendai Buddhism, mixed with some Shinto and Shugendô, a Japanese Buddhist practice that involved isolated mountain retreats and extreme fasts. Usui wanted to develop a system of spiritual development that would help people to live a more harmonious life, that was also simple and didn’t require the kind of ascetic discipline required of monks.
Usui came from a Samurai family and his development of the system of using Reiki emerged at the time was opening to ideas from the West; the Tom Cruise film “The Last Samurai’ illustrates the political situation. The social pillars of Japanese society started to disintegrate and a feeling of insecurity spread; Usui’s decision to create his system was a response to this. He would undoubtedly be quite surprised to find what has happened to his system were he to suddenly return. There are now many schools of Reiki, each with its own style of teaching and in recent years, more information has come out of Japan about Usui’s original teachings and his style of working with the energy. Some may claim their method is the best, or the most pure, but in the end Reiki is the energy and the system you choose to learn is very personal, just as everyone’s experience of Reiki, either as a daily practice or as a treatment, is unique.
Mikao Usui developed the system of using ki at the end of the 19th century and you could say that it is a practice that is both ancient and modern.

This is the energy that unites the universe and it means that we are constantly interacting with and influencing each other as though we were one gigantic body. THE BENEFITS OF USING REIKI
The fact that you can heal yourself with Reiki is one of its unique benefits. There are few other therapies around where you can give yourself healing while sitting on the plane or at your desk and nobody has the slightest idea that you are channelling energy into your body. It’s also an excellent way to send yourself to sleep at night and many of my students remark that they only ever get to a certain point and then they’re out like a light. How does it work? Well, briefly, imagine that you have an energy body connected to your physical body and the energy body influences the state of the physical. When the energy body becomes depleted, and that can happen at any age and for many reasons, eventually that lack shows up as a symptom of illness in the physical body. Restoring the energy body by channelling Reiki into it results in an improvement in the physical body.

The Beauty Barometer
We are once again joined by Reflections’ celebrity hairstylist Jonathan Yeadon, whose A-List clientele includes Victoria Beckham and Simon Cowell.Jonathan is loved not only for his mind-blowing colouring skills but his outrageous personality as well.
LISTEN
Up!
This month Jonathan tackles the sensitive subject of mental illness and how hairdressers can use their professional skills to help others. In other news, he welcomes two ‘newbies’ to the team!
I
t´s good to talk If I was going to do anything else apart from be a hair stylist I would be a psychologist. If you think about it, I have probably put in more man hours listening to my clients’ problems than any psychologist out there. As it is something that I am very passionate about, when I read about The Lions Barber Collective, an international collection of top barbers who have come together to help raise awareness for the prevention of suicide, it really touched home. Its objective is to offer hope to customers who may feel down, yet have nobody else they feel they can open up to. This made me sit down and think about the unique position we hairdressers are in and how we can use this to help others.
56
As hairdressers we obviously spend a lot of time talking to our clients, we keep their confidences and they trust us, therefore our profession allows for a unique connection with clients.
It is the perfect place to talk about your troubles. My clients have shared everything with me. If you think of what your deepest, darkest most sordid secret is, believe me, I have heard it before.
But why do people feel they can open up to their hairdresser? I believe it is because we are let into their personal space as we have to touch their hair. I think touch is the key here, as it opens a connection. Also, a client knows that they have my undivided attention while I am with them (sometimes they may have Nader’s as well, but don’t get me started on that again!) With the music and hairdryers on no one can hear what you’re saying except me and maybe Nader, but that’s because he can hear a bloody dog’s whistle.
In my experience, clients will often open up to their hairdresser when they have no one else to turn to – or when they don’t feel they can talk to family or friends. Sometimes opening up to a stranger is easier than sharing your problems with friends and family. It´s a fresh pair of ears, someone who is not directly involved and is objective, whereas loved ones may be quick to judge or might prefer simply to tell you what you want to hear.
The Beauty Barometer
Male pride Men are particularity hard work. They are not natural talkers and see emotions as the enemy. As suicide is now the biggest killer of men under 45, men need to open up about depression, not man up. The Lions Barber Collective theory is based on giving men an opportunity to talk and share feelings, which could potentially help to lead them away from suicidal thoughts. Utilising the very special bond between a trusted, friendly hairstylist we can create a safe space for men to talk about anything they want to. This has to be a good thing, right? Can a hairdresser really help? People immediately feel better when they get their problems off their chest, so the hairdresser may not actually be able to do or change anything but just listening has made a difference for that client.
“Men need to open up about depression, not man up.”
Our new Staff !
If the client is unsure about opening up to their stylist, just think about the following; it is very likely that, whatever problem you are facing, your hairstylist will have either experienced the same thing themselves or will know of someone who has, so they can offer advice from that. Never think you are on your own as there is always someone who can relate to you. I would actually like to see training being offered to hairdressers on how to spot early signs of depression. We are in the unique position of being able to make a big difference - as long as we are aware of the signs that someone may need help.
Look after yourself It can be very humbling, hearing tragic stories, yet it can also be emotionally draining, so anyone who works in this industry needs to protect themselves and be careful not to take work home with them. A friend once told me to imagine myself covered in light before walking into the salon every day and when I come home the first thing I do is take a shower to cleanse my body and mind. We’ve been blessed Having done a bit of Cosmic Ordering I am pleased to announce the arrival of Nick from LARNDAAN Town. He is like a breath of fresh air, enthusiastic, s**t hot with a pair of scissors and amazing at a Scouse blow-dry. What is also refreshing is, instead of starring at Gerry’s miserable face or trying to avoid Nader’s prying ears, we now have some serious eye candy in the salon. And she´s back I just want to welcome the boomerang back, our lovely Tori, who has has been on a sabbatical but has now returned to the people who love her. Honestly, I have missed seeing her smile every morning, not to mention her skills as a therapist. Her massages are legendary and once our clients experiences a massage with Tori, it’s guaranteed they will be booking another. If your feet have taken on an avian look from the heat and flip-flop wearing and now resemble falcon’s talons more than human nails, Tori will whip them into shape in no time at all. Yes, her pedis are really that good! What we love about Tori is she is totally unassuming, has no hidden agenda, what you see is what you get and we could do with a few more like her round here.

Metal Couture Production, Styling And Text: Sisko Akt Photography: Jose Serrano Hair & Make Up: Jorge Sanchez Production & Styling Assistant: Gema Forsström
This month, THE STYLISH SISTERS GIVE YOU AN INSIGHT INTO metal couture - pieces made as art for fashion photography or high-end CATWALK couture. more like art than a standard item of jewellery, You CAN TAKE THIS TREND FROM HIGH FASHION TO STREET STYLE IF YOU FOLLOW THESE DAZZLING TIPS! Metal couture first featured in fashion shows in the early 2000s, in both mainstream and high-end couture catwalks, films, and nowadays even in music videos featuring the likes of Beyoncé and Lady Gaga. Designers who create metal couture generally come from a jewellery background, or in some cases may have skills in some other form of sheet metal work, for example creating and decorating historical armour. In the 1960s people in every field made innovative use of new technologies, abandoning traditional techniques and materials to experiment with the results of the remarkable achievements created by space engineering and other advanced sciences. An early Metal Couturier was Paco Rabanne, who used metal in
60
clothing for his designs for film and major fashion labels. The Spaniard, who was a jewellery designer before he turned his hand to fashion, overturned the common understanding that clothes had to use thread and fabric, and started using other new materials including metals and nonwoven fabric. These were clothes ideal for intergalactic warriors and social butterflies: Barbarella wore Rabanne’s metal mesh, while Audrey Hepburn in Two for the Road preferred his trademark discs. Today, this trend has been translated to street wear, not only for the night-time, but also to be boldly worn during the day. Shimmering fabrics and shiny metallic accessories are all the rage this season, as have been seen in the Autumn/Winter 20162017 shows.

Sisko Akt’s Dazzling Metallic Guide
1. SILVER OR GOLD? When it comes to choosing precious metal jewellery for yourself, a great guide is actually your skin tone. People with dark skin and yellow undertones tend to look great with gold, while cooler complexions with rose undertones look gorgeous with silver. Just remember that the trick is not to overwhelm your skin tone with too much of a good thing! 2. GOLD RUSH Whether you’re a brunette or have blonde hair and light skin, different shades of gold can play up any skin tone beautifully. Lighter gold shades work best on fair beauties and darker bronze plays up a deeper skin tone. Our favourite backdrop for wearing gold? Without a doubt against a gorgeous saturated beach sunset. 3. SILVER VERSATILITY Silver has been a go-to look for evening wear for decades. Maybe it’s because it has the ability to make diamonds and crystals glimmer like no other metal. For this reason, you will always find dramatic shouldergrazing earrings and sleek cuffs after dark at an elegant restaurant or club. However, we love silver jewellery as it can be dressed down just as easily as dressed up for the night time, imitating the beauty of dazzling moonbeams. 4. METALLIC TREND ALERTS Chokers and collar necklaces are a huge trend, and will remain a priority through the Autumn, as shown by couturiers such as Alexander Wang or Dolce & Gabanna, who dressed their runway models in them. Alexander Wang’s tough girls also had chain necklaces, as did Alexander McQueen’s ladies, who were dripping in them. Finally, look to Valentino’s delicate pendant necklaces against sweaters, and uniting collars with long chains. Layering is one of our season’s staples! 5. FROM RUNWAY TO STREET STYLE Let’s be honest, shimmery fashion can be hard to pull off, but when gorgeous slip dresses and neat pleated skirts came down the runways rendered in sophisticated metallics, we had the urge to incorporate shine into our everyday dressing. The key to making such head-turning pieces feel chic? Let them do the talking by keeping the rest of your look simple! CRAIG DAVID AT AQWA MIST We attended… The Mayfair Sessions featuring Craig David at Aqwa Mist nightclub in Puerto Banús. The singer and DJ is a regular in Marbella and clearly he is well loved here as the queue of guests snaked down the road while numerous drivers searched for parking space.
We really enjoyed… The bottles of chilled Moet served in buckets of ice with sparklers that complemented the very chilled vibe this famous DJ created in the club.
We sang along with… Craig David who led the crowd in a rendition of his hit “Fill Me In” that continues to light up every club space he plays in even though it was first released 15 years ago.
Thanks to… The Aqwa Mist team and Mayfair Sessions for putting on such a great party night. The atmosphere was charged with electric and we’ll definitely come back for more nights like this.

AMG turns up the wick on their GT formula

Torque Talk
I
t undoubtedly takes one heck of a road car to get Lewis Hamilton excited, but after a couple of quick laps of the Brooklands handling circuit behind the wheel of the AMG GT R, the former F1 World Champion came out grinning, and clearly impressed. Lewis was clearly having fun, and from the spectators’ point of view, the latest variant of AMG’s in-house supercar looked both rapid and easy to handle on the limit. In fact, with its special eyeball catching “AMG Green Hell Magno” semi-matte paintwork glowing in the evening light, and the thunder of its NASCAR grade V8 soundtrack reverberating across the open ground, the GT R drew attention away from even the menacing grey magno AMG GT3 racecar with its Batmobile sized wings. The AMG GT R moniker is something of a wild card. As 2016 is the 10th Anniversary of AMG’s Black Series line-up that first debuted with the SLK55 AMG Black Series in May 2006, most enthusiasts were fully expecting a Black Series to be the next model in the AMG GT/S range that bowed in in late 2014. Faster and less costly than the SLS AMG that went before it, the AMG GT was very well received by customers all over the world from day one. Endorsing the superb balance of its front-mid-engine, transaxle recipe, the AMG GT3 racer has been a winning formula in the ADAC GT Championship, scoring many podium places in its debut season. Its high point so far is a clean sweep of the 1-2-3-4 and 6th places in the 44th edition of the gruelling ADAC Zurich 24 Hour Race at the Nürburgring in May. The “AMG Green Hell Magno” palette of the reveal car certainly makes the connection since ‘Green Hell’ is the racer’s nickname for the Nürburgring- Nordschleife or North Loop.
The extra grunt comes from a pair of new turbochargers with modified compressor wheels, modified waste-gates, gas-flowed exhaust ports, a slightly higher compression ratio, and a remapped ECU, with boost pressure increased from 1.2 to 1.35 bar. The AMG Speedshift DCT 7-speed dualclutch transmission had 0.7kg peeled off its dual-mass flywheel for even faster shifting times and sharper throttle response. Add a taller first gear and shorter seventh and final drive ratios and you land a 3.6 sec 0-100km/h sprint and a 318km/h top speed. With its aluminium space frame, steel hatchback and magnesium front slam panel, the standard AMG GT/S bodyshell weighs 231 kg, the lightest in this segment. The GT R takes this to the next level with carbon-fibre front wings, roof, propeller shaft, torque tube, tunnel cross brace, and front section stiffening braces. The wider front carbon-fibre wings and aluminium rear wings add 57mm to the total width of the GT R, while in total, the above lightweight materials result in a DIN kerb weight of 1,555kg, a weight saving of 15kg over the less powerful GT S. Critically, this is mostly from the area above the waistline. A stiff structure offers a more stable platform for improved handling, and here the GT R scores with the use of a carbonfibre tunnel underbody cross-brace that adds 7.5 percent to torsional rigidity. As the wider front track and larger, stickier rubber feed more loads into the suspension and bodyshell, they have to be countered by diagonal braces that reinforce the front section of the car.
Capitalising on its competition prowess, the AMG GT R distils the race DNA of, and many of the lessons learned from the GT3 racecar programme, applying them to a dedicated street legal track day variant. With this in mind, the technical improvements the GT R flaunts over and above the production GT/S centre around weight reduction, aerodynamics, chassis upgrades and power increase. Taking the power increase first, the GT R’s uprated M178 bi-turbo 3,982cc V8 motor pumps out 75 more horses than the GT S, and that means 585hp at 6,250rpm, with 700Nm of torque between 1,900 and 5,500rpm.
93
Torque Talk
94
Torque Talk Although the basic AMG GT/S has a racestyle coil-over suspension system, this has been has been heavily revised for more intense track use. The coil-over spring and damper units are fully adjustable for ride height, and damper bounce and rebound control. As with a racecar, this allows the driver to set the car up for a personal driving style or an individual track. That said, the adaptive damping system is still adjustable at the touch of a button on the AMG Drive Unit, or through the AMG Dynamic Select drive modes of Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus. The search for high strength and lower unsprung weight has resulted in suspension components like the wishbones, steering knuckles and hub carriers on both axles being forged from high-grade aluminium. The lower wishbones of the rear suspension are now Rose-jointed to remove any play under load. This means increased precision in fast bends, and a more consistent and predictable seat of the pants feel. To save weight and reduce understeer, the solid rear anti-roll bar of the GT/S models has been replaced by a larger section hollow bar. A chassis engineer told us that the characteristic velocity of the chassis; its handling linearity once the limit is broached, is improved over the already easy-to-drift GT S.
Behind these big wheels the standard brakes use 390mm/360mm diameter front/rear vented steel discs. The optional carbon-ceramic brake system features massive 402mm vented discs in front with 360mm discs at the rear, and promise both better resistance to fade and a weight saving of 17kg across the four corners. Clever wind tunnel work has resulted in active and passive aerodynamic measures that dramatically increase downforce with a slight improvement to the 0.29 drag coefficient of the standard GT/S. These are mostly hidden under the GT R’s purposeful looking skin, which starts with the new nose that gives this car its distinctive and more purposeful demeanour. Those familiar with Mercedes’ motorsport history will instantly recognise the grille inspired by the one on the front of the 300SL that won the 1952 Carrera Panamericana in Mexico. This 15 vertical chromed bar grille that inspired the ‘angry’ face of the AMG GT3 racer, is now carried over to the GT R. In a scenario where almost all Mercedes models now carry the horizontal ‘Sport’ grille with its big three-pointed star and horizontal bars, it is good to see the most exclusive sports models regaining a separate and distinctive identity rooted in the company’s illustrious motorsport heritage.
However, the unique nose goes much further than just a change of grille. The wider front wings that flank the sleeker, more arrow-like profile of the new nose are made from carbon-fibre. Adding 23mm to each side of the GT R’s front they cover the wider front track and the fat Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 rubber that together confer better turn-in, traction and stability. While the larger intakes in the centre and on each side of the nose draw more air to the uprated water radiator, oil cooler and intercooler systems, they also feature some clever innovations. As on some mainstream Mercedes models, Air Curtains that use the small vertical intakes on each side of the valance, and wheel housing liners with dedicated air vents creating an air curtain around the front wheels to reduce turbulence around their outside surfaces and down the cars flanks. For active air management, when the car is travelling at high speed or cornering and braking, these louvres stay closed to optimise drag. However, the electronically controlled shutters on either side of the central intake snap open in a second if the sensors detect excessive heat build up in the engine bay.
At 10.0J x 19-inch and 12.0J x 20-inch, the bespoke lightweight alloy wheels are now one-inch wider front and rear and shod with 275/35ZR19 and 325/30ZR20 Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres.
95
Torque Talk
96
Torque Talk
The really trick device however, is the active aero carbon-fibre component that sits between the air splitter and the bi-turbo V8 engine’s dry sump. In Race mode only, this electrically operated panel moves downwards by about 40mm when the car reaches 80km/h. Airflow between this panel and the bottom of the car then creates a Venturi effect that sucks the car towards the tarmac with an effective downforce reduction of 40kg over the front axle at 250km/h. With real world conditions in mind, this component is spring mounted to prevent damage from road undulations. With the aero panel extended downwards, the radiator air outlet also opens to guide departing air on a pre-defined path along the cars flat bottom towards the double rear diffuser. In conjunction with the adjustable rear wing, these diffusers work as a system to gain positive downforce and clean up the departing air to reduce drag. In total, the changes and additions result in a 155kg increase in downforce at top speed over the AMG GT S. Active rear wheel steering is the flavour of the month right now, and rightly so as it enhances low-speed agility and high-speed stability. This is the first use
of this technology on a Mercedes-Benz vehicle and a pair of electronicallycontrolled mechanical actuators steer the rear wheels by up to 1.5-degrees in the opposite direction to the fronts at speed up to 100km/h, and in the opposite direction above that. The net effect is to ‘shorten’ and ‘lengthen’ the wheelbase to increase agility and stability respectively.

98
Torque Talk Collectively, the wider tracks, uprated suspension kinematics, sticky Michelins and aerodynamic downforce make a huge difference to the way the GT R goes, steers, corners and stops.
As the sun began its inexorable trek to the west, a rainbow broke out over the multi-coloured line of AMG GT variants, adding its own visual flourish to the moody sky.
Now for the really fun bit! The electronic limited slip differential spans a 0-100% locking action, and is driver controllable in Race mode via a yellow rotary knob on the centre console. This provides nine degrees of slip according to how sideways you like your power sliding action.
Lewis Hamilton had been lucky enough to drive the AMG GT R in anger a couple of hours before. But as the last light faded and I finished my photo shoot of this amazing new car, I smiled inwardly in the knowledge that it would be my turn soon.

ENSURING YOUR
T
hreats to your security can come in many forms. More recently those who may wish to maliciously cause harm have turned away from merely infringing on your physical wellbeing and have turned to cyber crime. With cyber attacks on the rise, having a strong defence against losing vital data is becoming critical in both business and personal life. It is no longer enough to rely on anti-virus software and a firewall, but equally it’s important to protect yourself from data leaking from within your company or staff working closely with you. Conflict Marbella is the new dedicated consultancy service in the region from Conflict international who, from their head office in London, specialise in providing bespoke intelligence, investigation, security and risk advice services to clients worldwide. Director Mike LaCorte says cyber security is now becoming an important part of their business. “We are finding that it is now a logical next step for
many companies and high-net-worth individuals we are acting for. There is a need to make sure not only their physical wellbeing is secure but that often now extends into security online.”
Finding the Source of Data Leaks Through their London head office, Conflict Marbella has access to a team of experts who specialise in cyber security. Whether protecting you from external threats or ensuring that sensitive information doesn’t leave through any form of espionage from a former employee, they have the technical know-how to find out how safe your systems are and discover any breaches in your security. Conflict’s experienced specialists can carry out a thorough specialist Technical Surveillance Counter Measures, or TSCM, audit to discover any hidden bugs including sophisticated devices within IT infrastructure, phones, laptops and desktop PC’s.

A recent survey of employees who either left or lost a job showed that more than half had admitted stealing confidential information. The highest proportion was in the financial services industry but it could equally apply in
many other sectors. Additionally, if you have a close-knit team working around you who have access to confidential information, it is important to make sure none of it is leaking from someone within that circle or from a disgruntled
former employee. Conflict highlights where your threats are coming from and allow you to go about your business - safely and securely.
‘Penetration Testing’, puts your IT infrastructure to the test by attempting to by-pass its existing security.
Hacking the Hackers There are a variety of methods that can be deployed to ensure your systems remain secure. Mike LaCorte says one area is particularly effective. “We have a talented team of industry experts on hand that can ethically carry out what is known as a Pentest. Penetration Testing, to give it its full name, puts your IT infrastructure to the test by attempting to by-pass its existing security. This can quickly determine any areas where the integrity of the system is at risk and how those gaps in security can be filled effectively.”
A Pentest can also be extremely useful if you have already been the victim of a cyber attack. Conflict’s IT specialists can determine how it happened and effectively recreate the virus in a controlled environment to determine what data, if any, was accessed. They can also extract important identifiable information about the virus type, its capabilities and also possibly the location and who may have perpetrated the attack. The team can then go on to make sure new controls put in place are sufficient to stop a similar attack in future.
To the untrained eye, there can appear to be a bewildering array of methods being used to gain access to your vital data. Whether
that attack is planned or at random, it is heartening to know that there are specialists who are one step ahead of those who may threaten your security.

A FUNNY WAY To Be Good… I
n 1296 the town and castle of Tarifa was under siege. Spain was then a turbulent collection of kingdoms, and it is sometimes difficult to work out who was doing what to whom. In this case the town had recently been captured from the Moors, and was now in the possession of Sancho IV of Castile “El Bravo”, who had rebelled against his father Alfonso X “El Sabio”, over the distribution of land. Alfonso had been supported by the bastard (a perfectly acceptable heraldic term!) Alonso Perez de Guzmán, the progenitor of the Ducal House of Medina Sidonia. The Moors returned to the attack, supported by Sancho IV’s rebellious brother, the Infante Don Juan, only to find it stoutly defended by the same Alonso Perez de Guzmán, this time the ally of Sancho IV. Guzmán’s second son was in the household of Don Juan as part of his education, which was customary at the time. During the previous siege of Tarifa, held by the Moors, the attack had been led by King Sancho, with his brother the Infante Don Juan fighting bravely by his side until seriously wounded in the face by boiling sulphur. But after the battle the brothers quarrelled and Don Juan went into exile in Portugal. From there he moved to Tangiers, where he entered the service of the Benimerin Sultan. Guzman’s son accompanied him. When the Moors renewed their attack on Tarifa under the Benimerin Ibn Sultan Ya’qub, Don Juan returned to assist them. (The Benimerin dynasty were the rulers of the Fez empire I hope you are with me so far!) News came to the besieging Moors that an Aragonese fleet was on its way to lift the siege. Don Juan hit on the idea of using Guzmán’s son as a bargaining chip.
Don Juan hit on the idea of using Guzmán’s son as a bargaining chip. He sent message to the castle that unless it surrendered, he would kill the lad. 102
He sent message to the castle that unless it surrendered, he would kill the lad. Guzmán appeared on the ramparts declaring “I did not beget a son to be made use of against my country, but that he should serve her against her foes. Should Don Juan put him to death, he will but confer honour on me, true life on my son, and on himself eternal shame in this world, and everlasting wrath after death”. He then threw his dagger shouting “If you do not have a gun to consummate iniquity, there you have my dagger”. In response the Moors beheaded the son in front of his father, and then, according to some reports, catapaulted the head into the castle. The Aragonese fleet arrived, and the Moors, with Don Juan, retreated to Granada. When the news reached Toledo, King Sancho wrote to Guzmán “You deserve to be called “The Good”, and thus you shall be called, and thus you shall be called hereafter”, and so the legend of “Guzmán El Bueno” was born. He continued to fight against the Moors until he met his death at the castle in Gaucin; a castle never captured by an enemy. The late Duchess of Medina Sidonia, Guzmán’s descendant and a redoubtable historian, has expressed some reservations regarding the legend of her ancestor, opining that his history has been “cleaned up”, and various embellishments made to make him more palatable to a later and more refined
age. Traditionally, he was born in Leon in 1256, the illegitimate son of Pedro Nunez de Guzmán and possibly the illegitimate daughter of King Alfonso IX of Leon. As the Duchess herself remarked, it gave her house’s origins “dignity and legitimacy”! Doubts have been cast upon this story, and many historians now believe that he was originally a muslim engaged in trade, whilst at the same time gaining some repute as a soldier. In 1288 he was given permission to export wheat to “where he is from”, and it is known that such exports went to Morocco. In 1294 he was given tuna fishing rights by King Sancho IV as a reward for his heroism in the defence of Tarifa, but in 1297 a royal document still refers to him as a “vassal”, which at the time denoted a non-Spaniard. He had been engaged in warfare since the age of 22, when he joined the armies of Alfonso the Wise (El Sabio), but he also fought in the armies of Abu Yusuf, Benimerin King of Fez. His martial exploits, quite apart from the sacrifice of his son at Tarifa, saw him rewarded by large grants of Crown lands, which were augmented in 1309 after he assisted King Ferdinand of Castile to recapture Gibraltar after nearly 600 years of Moorish occupation. Once again we see a Christian ruler using Guzmán’s intimate knowledge of the Moorish world to assist in a conquest. It is very likely that at some stage the lands of Pedro Nunez de Guzmán fell into his ownership and, as has happened
many times in history, the possessor of the land also becomes the possessor of the name, and a neat little birth story comes into being.
In 1294 he was given tuna fishing rights by King Sancho IV as a reward for his heroism in the defence of Tarifa Whatever the historical facts, the legend of Guzmán El Bueno has played an important part in Spanish folklore, with romances, tragedies, comedies, poems and an opera dedicated to him. He looms as large as El Cid, Don Quixote, or Don Juan. And he has an historical parallel. In July 1936 the Alcázar of Toledo was under siege by the Republican forces during the Civil Way. The place was held by a handful of Nationalists under Colonel Moscardó. On July 23rd Commissar Cabello telephoned the colonel to inform him that his 16 year old son Luis had been captured, and that unless the Alcázar was surrended within ten minutes, he would be shot. The colonel asked to speak to his son, who asked his father what he should do. “Commend your soul to God, and die like a patriot, shouting ¡Viva Cristo Rey!. The Alcázar does not surrender” replied the father. “That I can do” responded the son. He was shot a month later. Franco’s forces relieved the Alcázar in September.

The Quay to Villa Revival
N
How Quay Property Group turned an outdated villa into a thoroughly modern home.
ueva Andalucia is one of the most desirable residential areas on the coast. The properties in the leafy green zone range from apartment blocks to luxury villas and contemporary mansions nestled in the foothills of La Concha mountain with views of Puerto Banús and the sparkling waters of the Mediterranean to its south. At the heart of Nueva Andalucia lies Golf Valley where frontline properties overlook the fairways of Las Brisas and Los Naranjos, two of the Coast’s top golf clubs that have made this area so popular with aficionados of the sport.

No project is too complex for John and his team, who relish any challenge and pride themselves on creating homes suited to the modern lifestyle. Nueva Andalucia is not old; its formation started in the 1970s following the expansion of Puerto Banús from a fishing hamlet into an international playground, there are no charming cobbled streets or historic monuments,
although residents are only a 10-minute drive from Marbella’s Old Town when they want an authentically Spanish experience. There are, however, villas that date back to its earlier days, which now need some TLC, and that’s exactly what Quay Property Group was able to give one residence. Quay Property Group, headed up by John May, is a professional building contractor that has successfully completed projects in the most prestigious Marbella locations including, La Zagaleta, El Madroñal,
HOME COUTURE
Sierra Blanca, Puerto Banús and the Golden Mile. It rightly has a reputation for delivering the highest level of customer service and for finishing projects within budget, on time and to the very highest standard. No project is too complex for John and his team, who relish any challenge and pride themselves on creating homes suited to the modern lifestyle. So, when Quay was asked to rescue an outdated Andalucian-style villa by refurbishing it entirely to create a more modern, contemporary home, the team was delighted to take on the task. The home had been on the market for some time but as is often the case with the older properties on the coast, buyers overlooked it and opted for the more recently built residences. However, John and the Quay designers and builders were able to see the great potential the home had to become modern and attract buyers. The first task set by the owners was to give the exterior a facelift with particular attention given to garden and pool area. Quay built and installed a purpose built bar and BBQ area. The bar has ‘professional’ stamped all over it and it is easy to imagine a group of friends and family gathered for an evening of entertaining at home. Indeed, why go to a bar in Puerto Banús when you have a better looking one at home. No wonder the owners, who travel frequently and therefore weren’t present while much of the work was carried out, were so delighted with the result that they immediately asked Quay to completely refurbish the villa’s interior. It’s a testament to Quay’s integrity and standard of work that the clients once again went off travelling, quite content to let the team get on with the project. Quay set to turning this tired, old house into a modern dream home by first improving the room layouts. Often the older Andalucian-style homes lack the feeling of open space that a contemporary villa has, so changing that was a priority. The result is rooms that feel light, airy and welcoming and where people want to spend time. The use of indirect lighting and ceiling details, such as shadow gaps instead of architraves, plus full height doors all contributed to taking the rooms out of the ‘Dark Ages’.
“The buyers who ignored it before just lacked the vision to see this home’s incredible potential.”
They also installed the latest technology throughout the house using domotic controls, which are as cutting-edge as it gets in terms of home living. The ability to control everything from pool cleaning, to windows, blinds and curtains, as well as TV, audio system and state-of-the-art security system, plus much more, with one small controller is the ultimate in

time-saving luxury. Domotics are also perfect for people who travel regularly because you can manage all the home functions from the other side of the world if necessary. And, to finish the project off with that one thing that confidently announces luxury living, Quay installed a comfortable cinema room where the owners can relax and watch films with the same quality of sound as at the local cinema. Combined with the drinks bar, there is hardly any need to go out at all. All great projects come to an end and the owners were thrilled with the result – a stunning six-bedroom, six-bathroom residence. Quay put a builder sign outside the property and guess what; the property that nobody loved was suddenly attracting crowds of buyers and John found his phone was ringing off the hook with requests to view it. However, they are too late, because the owners love Quay’s villa revival so much that they are holding on to it as their long term home. As John remarked, “the buyers who ignored it before just lacked the vision to see this home’s incredible potential.” And, the neighbours were impressed as well, because now Quay is starting a similar project in the same road. This is a testimonial that speaks for itself! If you’re looking for your ideal home and searching for an older villa to turn into a modern residence, or you have a home that could use a makeover, give John May a call and he will help you to make your vision come true. hen you were little was there a themed room you longed for? All pink, all blue, a jungle, or the deep sea? Did you grow up dreaming of becoming an astronaut and exploring space? You may have begged for a space themed room and no matter what sex, race, religion or location, we all look up at the same sky and our love for the universe really is just that – universal! Some still believe that space holds the key to our survival, with Professor Stephen Hawking suggesting that space travel will save mankind and that we should colonise other planets. But when did our obsession with interplanetary travel begin? Probably a long time ago, but not many people have covered the concept quite as beautifully as the makers of Star Trek. Whether you’re a Trekkie or not, it arguably has some of the best interior design in space themed programming. When Walter Matthew ‘Matt’ Jefferies - American aviation and mechanical artist - was charged with the task of creating the Enterprise he was given free rein, but was told that it had to be futuristic, no rockets, no jets, no fire streams; it was to be a totally original design - where no man had gone before.

... a combination of sleek lines, areas that were spacious but not gratuitously so and a feeling of quality, longevity; a utopia in other words... When it came to the interior, early concepts dictated that it must be practical but also cutting edge, a focus on ergonomics in terms of use and simple in style so that it would not date too quickly. Considering how long the fleet and civilians were expected to live on the ship, it also had to be very comfortable. The result was a combination of sleek lines, areas that were spacious but not gratuitously so and a feeling of quality, longevity; a utopia in other words. This futuristic, but ergonomic space drew from the best of 1960s interior design and featured furniture invented by some of the industry’s biggest names such as the Tulip Chair by Eero Saarinen (1956) and mass produced by the Knoll furniture company, interestingly based in Pennsylvania, the same state in which Matt Jefferies was born. Many pieces of furniture produced by Knoll now form a permanent design collection at The Museum of Modern Art in New York and, as a company, it is famous for the Bauhaus style, also exhibited on the Star Trek Enterprise and elsewhere in Star Trek.
Created by Gene Roddenberry in 1964, the programme was firstly developed for the purpose of entertainment, of course. However, it was also a beautifully executed morality tale, covering current events and addressing important issues along the way, such as personal loyalty, authoritarianism, imperialism, economics, racism, religion, human rights, sexism, feminism and the role of technology. Creator Gene Roddenberry found that he had an outlet through which he could “make statements about sex, religion, Vietnam, politics and intercontinental missiles. Indeed, we did make them on Star Trek: we were sending messages and fortunately they all got by the network”, a confession of his messaging through prime-time family television.

In a sense, the interiors also had subliminally to carry this message. Australian writer and Star Trek fan Richard Lutz wrote: “The enduring popularity of Star Trek is due to the underlying mythology which binds fans together by virtue of their shared love of stories involving exploration, discovery, adventure and friendship that promote an egalitarian and peace loving society where technology and diversity are valued rather than feared and citizens work together for the greater good. Thus Star Trek offers a hopeful vision of the future and a template for our lives and our society that we can aspire to. The interiors therefore needed to be bright, positive, forward thinking and create a feeling of happiness and hope. The Starship Enterprise from Star Trek: The Original Series is subsequently considered a beacon of 1960s interior design.

The style is not difficult to replicate and today, thankfully, items of furniture, lighting, wallpaper are still being mass produced for us to continue enjoying. This doesn’t mean your lounge needs to look like the bridge of the Starship Enterprise, there are many grown-up ways to interpret this style from elegant modern lighting on a white backdrop to having a bit of fun with hanging ‘bubble’ chairs. Not So
Our resident food and nutrition expert, Bettina Campolucci Bordi, offers us some healthy alternatives to sugar.
Sugar may be sweet, but it’s gained a bad reputation lately. Studies link its consumption to diabetes, obesity, heart disease and cancer. A new University of Utah study suggests that sugar isn’t even healthy at supposedly “safe” doses. It could reduce reproduction rates and lead to an early grave.
132
There aren’t many people who can say they don’t like sugar and even though, we all know that too much of it can be a bad thing, who can resist the occasional sugary treat? Sugar, as we know it today, was first called, sweet salt, and it was a luxury. But now, sugar is considered a necessity and the world produces over 150 million tonnes of it a year.
HERE ARE TEN FACTS ABOUT SUGAR THAT YOU PROBABLY DIDN’T KNOW, AND NOT ALL OF THEM ARE BAD NEWS!
Crystallized sugar has been around a long time
People have been crystallizing sugar from sugar cane for at least 2000 years, but the joys of the sweet stuff didn’t come to the west time. When Alexander the Great’s army found sugar in India, they were amazed at how honey could be produced without bees.It then spread through Persia and introduced it in the Mediterranean.
Those who had genetic changes in a hormone called ghrelin consumed more sugar (and alcohol)
than those that had no gene variation. Ghrelin is a hormone that tells the brain you’re hungry.
Sugar doesn’t rot your teeth
Tooth decay isn’t caused by sugar, it’s caused by the bacteria that feed off the sugar. These bacteria will actually feed off any carbohydrate, so starchy foods that can get stuck to your teeth can be just as damaging.
The sugar pill medicine
Children are sometimes prescribed a sugar pill marketed under the name of ‘Obecalp’, for minor complaints. When a doctor prescribes ‘Obecalp’, a pharmacist knows exactly what to do. Just read the name backwards!
You can be genetically addicted to sugar. Sugar can be used as rocket fuel
Sugar is the main component of the fuel used in rockets by amateur rocket enthusiasts. If you burn sucrose with some corn syrup and saltpetre, you get sugar propellant, which is used to power small rockets.
Having a sweet tooth is not always just an excuse to eat too much candy. Scientists have found that some individuals have genetic variations that affect their production of a hunger hormone called ghrelin, which makes them want to eat more sugar.
Too much sugar can affect your memory Sugar hides in many foods
Sugar is added to many different types of food, including savory items. You know you have to cut back on candy, soda and cakes, to reduce your sugar intake, but it is also present in ketchup, processed foods and even bread.
Artificial sweeteners were found by accident
Sucralose, now sold in the shops as Splenda, was discovered by scientists trying to create a new insecticide. Apparently, a research assistant who misunderstood his instructions to test the new compound thought he had been told to taste it. He discovered that it tasted sweet.
Eating sugar can accelerate the aging process of cells and of particular concern is the effect that this has on brain cells. In a study, scientists found that excess consumption of sugar can result in a loss of memory and a reduction in overall mental agility.
Sweet is the only taste humans are born desiring. This last fact I just cannot resist…
The average can of soda has about 10 teaspoons of sugar. Can you imagine?! Good news is there are ways that you can kick the habit, more about this in next month’s issue! kitchen @Bettinas_ m itchen.co bettinask mpolucci@ bettinaca m o c gmail.

COSTA CUISINE
INGREDIENTS : 2 1/3 cups (500 grams) of buckwheat ½ cup (120 grams) of pumpkin seeds ½ cup (120 grams) of sunflower seeds ½ cup (120 grams) of hazelnuts ½ cup (120 grams) of raisins 4 dried prunes 1 apple chopped up in small squares ¼ cup (60 grams) desiccated coconut ½ cup (120 grams) of maple syrup or honey 2 tbs. of coconut oil Pinch of salt
134
METHOD : Soak your buckwheat in water overnight. In the morning rinse the buckwheat thoroughly (you will notice the water has become slimy, it’s normal don’t worry!) After rinsing, put the buckwheat back in a bowl without liquid and leave in a dry place covered with a tea towel or kitchen roll. The buckwheat will develop cute little tails- as soon as this happens your buckwheat is ready. Make sure the tails are no longer than the seed itself, if they are, the buckwheat develops a poison and is no good. Here you can either use a dehydrator or a conventional oven. If using the latter, put it on 80-100°C .
Mix all the ingredients together and arrange in oven/dehydrator and “cook” until mixture is dry and has a crunchy granola texture. This can take up to an hour or more! If you are using an oven keep an eye out and check now and again how your granola is getting along. It might sound like a hassle to make BUT I always make a double batch to keep around for an effortless breakfast or a snack! Dehydrator - usually 8 hours Oven (100°C) 2-4 hours or until dry Enjoy with nut or seed milk (my personal preferences).

: ASIAN INSPIRATION
T
ell me – do you honestly know anyone who doesn’t love noodles? No, me neither, which is why Adrián de Damas’s new venture looks like it will soon be the talk of the Coast. Having gained experienced with the La Sala Group, Adrián has been planning iNoodle’s opening for a couple of years and his dedication to this task is obvious from the moment that you walk through the door. iNoodle’s philosophy revolves around a great deal of personal contact with the client (Adrián deadpans that he aims to “fidelize” his guests) and a total dedication to finding the best fresh produce. He goes to the market every morning to buy fish, meat and vegetables. Frozen goods are anathema to Adrián’s way of running his restaurant. Another feature of iNoodle which will be music to the ears of every hard-pressed diner who has overspent during the summer – it offers excellent value for money. You can enjoy a good night out without worrying about what the final tally will be, which all adds to the appeal of this welcome addition to the local scene. No doubt Adrián’s friendly and inexpensive restaurant will soon have a steady stream of repeat customers and loyal regulars.
iNoodle’s philosophy revolves around a great deal of personal contact with the client... and a total dedication to finding the best fresh produce.

COSTA CUISINE
It is not a huge venue, but has been thoughtfully designed, a wood theme dominating with a large terrace providing plenty of space for guests to enjoy outdoor dining. On the evening we visited, the place was already quite busy when we arrived, the tables filling constantly throughout the evening. Adrián helpfully talked us through the menu, after which we felt qualified to make our choices. You might choose Asian cuisine when you go out to dine, but how much do you really know about it? We feel a lot more informed after our iNoodle outing. Our first course was quite easy to decide on; the Selection of Thai Starters included Duck Rolls, Satay
Chicken, Panko coated Butterfly Tiger Prawns with Homemade Mild Curry Mayonnaise, Chicken Sesame and Thai Rolls. The first thing you will notice about iNoodle is that the food is beautifully presented. Forget about every ‘cheap and cheerful’ outlet you have ever encountered because, despite the low prices, there is nothing cut-price about the quality of the food or the way it looks on the plate. Standards of presentation are obviously massively important to the team and this is clearly visible in every dish that leaves Head Chef Joseph Pannisoro’s kitchen and the flavours more than equal this feast for the eyes. Every component of our starter selection was absolutely delicious and
had a thoroughly authentic flavour. It was like enjoying a short break in Thailand, without the hassle of international travel. The menu contains some imaginative items along with the Asian favourites. We were all very tempted by the Thai Caprese Salad, a twist on the old Italian standard of Tomato and Buffalo Mozzarella with the addition of a special Thai dressing. The Prawn Pad Thai was rather more old school, but was declared “amazing!” by the member of our party who had ordered it. Served with Bean Sprouts, Lime, Peanuts and Coriander, this was another Thai classic given a new lease of life by a talented chef. We can also recommend the Chicken with Wok Mixed Vegetables and Egg Noodles, which was similarly delicious. We couldn’t help noticing that the iNoodle team also include a crowd pleasing selection of wraps, so we chose the Chicken version which was massively enhanced by a gorgeous Sweet Chilli Sauce. When iNoodle launches its takeaway service in September we can imagine that this will be one of the hits of the para llevar crowd. Finally, how could we pass up the chance to sample a true Thai classic? We ordered two dishes of the Green Curry - one with Chicken and the other with Prawns. Served with Steamed Jasmine Rice, this was possibly the hit of the evening. Co-owners Adrián and Rupert de Mancha are surely onto a winner here. Capitalising on the global love of Asian cuisine by delivering world class, authentic dishes and charging only a modest amount for them is a relatively straightforward idea but, like many success stories, its genius lies in exactly that simplicity. We confidently predict that this new noodle kid on the block will be one of 2016’s greatest success stories. Calle Avila 3, Local 3B, 29670 San Pedro de Alcantara. Knowing which wine is the perfect match with each dish is the mark of a real expert, so we are very lucky that our sommelier, Julio, has all the answers.
T
he mountains of Ronda are in the spotlight, not only because of their natural trails and the views of the Mediterranean they afford from their summit, but also because there is a wine revolution-taking place in the region. Petit Verdot is one of the most successful varietals planted in the region, the original terroir of the grape is Bordeaux where actually it is hardly used in blends, to add tannin structure, colour and herbaceous notes of violet and sage. PV is a very late-ripening grape, a warm climate variety that has found its second homeland in the distinctive mountains of Ronda.

WIN
WINE from Ronda A pure Petit Verdot from Ronda is a big wine with a very dark colour and high tannin structure. PV offers up aromas of mostly black fruit flavours, ranging from plum, blackberry and blueberry to slightly lighter black cherry. The unique and intriguing flavours of Petit Verdot from Ronda are characterised by herbal and floral notes such as violet, lilac, lavender, violets, sage, and dried herbs. Long barrel aged carries aromas of vanilla, smoke, spice, cedar, molasses and even tar to the wines. The wines can be a bit smoky and rustic, like smoked meats.

I know the city and its people, and I love them, so I’m sure we’re going to have a great time.” said Mats Wilander while in Paris where he was working as a commentator for Eurosport.

Mike Trezise, business entrepreneur and diehard Cardiff City fan has opened his third café-restaurant establishment on the Coast. Fans of Pan & Mermelada on the Golden Mile can now enjoy one of its fabulous breakfasts and its brunch menu at the new location beside the casino and H10 hotel in Nueva Andalucia. Mike, as many of you may know, is also the owner of the SmallWorld Café on Istán road, and he has certainly made an impact on the Marbella restaurant scene with the North American menu style and the friendly, laidback atmosphere that has proved very popular with residents along the Costa del Sol. We wish Mike all the best with his new establishment and we’re confident that we’ll be seeing more interesting eateries from the ‘Trezise stable’ in the future. panymermelada.com

Specsavers Opticas are committed to helping people of all ages to see clearly and keep their eyes healthy. This is why, in time for the back to school rush, they are offering kids’ eye tests for free throughout September and each store is donating 10 pairs of glasses to their local school or charity.
new shoes and bags to buy, so the prospect of having to spend money on glasses can be worrying for parents. To help parents, each store is also donating ten pairs of children’s glasses to their chosen school or charity, so that 80 children will be able to see more clearly this year.
Amrik Sappal from Specsavers Opticas Fuengirola explains, “Getting prepared for the start of the new term is busy and expensive and we’re aware that parents aren’t finding the time or money to get their kids’ eyes tested before they go back to school. We wanted to offer these free eye tests to encourage everyone to come in and make sure their kids are seeing clearly and that their eyes are healthy. It is particularly important with children, as it can be tough for them to explain their visual problems and if they go undiagnosed they can affect their performance at school and their general development.” Going back to school is a very expensive time for parents, with books, materials,
Specsavers Opticas in Marbella and Fuengirola will be donating glasses to their local schools, so that the teachers can choose those families most in need of this support. Nerea Galdos from the Marbella store commented, “As part of our commitment to our community and our ten-year anniversary, we’re donating ten pairs of glasses to the Vincente Alexandre bilingual school. We are really pleased to be able to help these children to perform better and hope everyone has an excellent term.” Visit specsavers.es to make an appointment for the free back to school eye tests.

SELECTED HOMME CHOOSES ANTONIO BANDERAS Hollywood heartthrob and Málaga’s favourite son, Antonio Banderas, took a break from acting and went back to school. He enrolled at Central St. Martin’s College of Art and Design in London, which has produced some of the world’s top fashion designers including Stella McCartney and Alexander McQueen and now he is making his grand entrance into the world of fashion with an autumn/winter 2016 collection for the menswear label SELECTED Homme. Antonio Banderas’s capsule collection for the label forms part of the lookbook in its IDENTITY, INDIGO and HERITAGE lines. The brand reports that the actor threw himself into the role of fashion designer with same levels of energy and discipline that he brings to his acting roles. He has also brought his Málagueño heritage to the collection as well. He told the press: “The Mediterranean is the key to each of the garments; the various shades of blue in the linings of the jackets, for example, is one way of the ways that I have presented who I am and where I come from, as well as how I see fashion. It’s my particular way of looking at the world.” The capsule collection is aimed at the modern man and reflects a combination of SELECTED Homme’s trademark style with Antonio Banderas’s interpretation of it. The actor said: “My idea from the beginning was to create a wardrobe for the modern man that would feel comfortable throughout the day; a collection that will take a man from work, to dinner with friends or a black tie event.”

The Malagueño also revealed that his part in the design process had increased with time but admitted that he was still studying and had much to learn yet, which is typical of this star who is always humble despite his celebrity status.
SELECTED’s brand manager for Spain, Marcós Galvez commented that the company was very excited about the collaboration with the Spanish actor and that everyone hoped it would continue. He also said that Banderas had learnt a lot from working with the brand’s existing designers and that he would soon have the skills to create his own exclusive collection. The Antonio Banderas SELECTED Homme collection is now available at El Corte Inglés and SELECTED stores.

2016 MARBELLA autobello concours d’ elegance
his year’s Marbella Autobello event took place on the 28th July at the Westin La Quinta Hotel, where some of the most elegant modern and classic cars on the Costa Del Sol went on display. Judging was held according to the French Concours d’ Elegance rules, so the main factors contributing to the scoring were style, beauty and elegance, which accounted for 50-percent of the points. The remaining marks came from condition, authenticity, restoration quality, rarity, and historical Importance. The overall winner was the magnificent 1927 Hispano-Suiza H6B Convertible Victoria, with bespoke coachwork by Rollston of New York. This beautifully restored six-cylinder classic even had its original toolkit, which we were told was shared by the V12 aircraft engines that Hispano-Suiza made in this era.
