Cheers to September One thing is for sure, this has been a summer we will always remember. While masks on the beach may not be a memory we wish to cherish, the community spirit, #supportlocal movement and all-round comradery are memories we will carry through into winter and onto next year. With that in mind we are delighted to introduce a new column this month entitled Local Hero, each issue we will shine the spotlight on an individual who has shown exemplary support for their community, chosen organisation or charity. Our first nomination is Deidre O’Regan; who believes we all have a responsibility to take care of our beautiful planet starting with keeping our beaches clean, an initiative we strongly support here at Society Marbella. Turn to page 112 to hear more about Deidre’s work and how you can get involved. While nightclubs may currently be closed, things are back on track when it comes to food. Always wanting to keep things fresh, our latest gastronomic feature, The Gourmet Grid, takes you on a trip along the coast in search of the finest pizza to come out of Marbella, (since non-essential travel is still frowned upon,) here is our verdict on where to enjoy a little taste of Italy on your doorstep!

Some event highlights from last month have to be Sala by the Sea’s fashion show in collaboration with Angel Clothing, Art Caffe’s spectacular wine pairing evening, Virginia Macari’s fashion show at El Chiringuito Puente Romano and Roccabox’s office launch. As always, we were on hand to capture all the action and antics; turn to page 100 to re-live all the fun. Were you caught on camera? There is only one way to find out! Our cover this month features our September swimwear shoot at the fabulous Max Beach, the new celebrity hotspot for East Marbella. On the subject of celebrities, this month’s celebrity news takes a closer look at Oprah’s support of Breonna Taylor, how Ellen’s show ratings have plummeted to an all-time low and a brighter note, the baby boom that has come out of lockdown! And for something a little different, our motoring enthusiast, Ian Kuah shares with us the story of Christian von Koenigsegg and how his dreams of building his very own supercar, just so happened to come true. Well here’s to September; a month where we can enjoy all the advantages of summer with a little less of the heat (we hope)! What’s not to love?

ith over 100 films under his belt, Samuel L Jackson is true Hollywood royalty. This month we take a look back at his career to date and how this talented actor went from being expelled from college to a BAFTA Award winner. Samuel Leroy Jackson was born December 21st, 1948 in Washington DC. Raised by his grandparents in Chattanooga, Tennessee, he attended the historically black Morehouse College in Atlanta, where he become involved in the Black Power movement. He was expelled in 1969 for having locked several school board members in a building for two days to protest the composition of the mostly white board.

Jackson’s breakthrough performance came in Tarantino’s cult classic, Pulp Fiction for which he earnt an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actor. Other notable credits in the 1990’s include Jurassic Park, Die Hard with a Vengeance, A Time to Kill, The Long Kiss Goodnight, Jackie Brown, The Negotiator and Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace. He went on to reprise his role in additional Star Wars films in later years. Jackson’s success continued into the 21st century with roles including Rules of Engagement, Shaft and reuniting with Tarantino once again for Django Unchained before signing a 9 movie deal with Marvel Comics that included Iron Man 2, Captain America: The First Avenger, The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron,

After spending two years working in Los Angeles as a social worker, Jackson returned to Morehouse to study acting, having been inspired by a Negro Ensemble Company production. He graduated in 1972 and joined the Black Image Theatre Company, touring the country and performing in politically charged skits, primarily aimed at white audiences. In 1976 Jackson moved to New York City for work, while appearing in Charles Fuller’s Pulitzer Prize winning ‘A Soldier´s Play’ he met actor Morgan Freeman and his future mentor, Spike Lee, the latter later cast him in some of his early films, including Jungle Fever, for which he received critical acclaim for his performance as a hardcore drug addict. The film was what gave Jackson, who had struggled with addiction himself, and just come out of rehab, the strength to permanently end his own personal drug addiction.

Painters get up and paint. Writers get up and write. I like to get up and act. It’s not a big deal. It makes me happy.

Spider-Man: Far from Home and Avengers: Endgame. In 2015 Jackson was praised for his roles in Chi-Raq and Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight, in which he starred as a black bounty hunter encountering racism and extreme violence in the aftermath of the American Civil War. He then went on to play a villain seeking immortality in Tim Burton’s Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.

If you have an opportunity to use your voice you should use it.

2017 saw Jackson star in Kong: Skull Island and The Hitman’s Bodyguard and in 2019 he reprised two roles in Glass and Shaft, where he resumed the role of John Shaft. The same year he also starred in The Last Full Measure, about a U.S soldier´s bravery during the Vietnam War and the conspiracy that delayed him being honoured the Medal of Honour. Never one to slow things down, this year´s credits include The Banker, a drama set in the 1950’s about two African American businessman who use a white man as their front and his latest project, a new documentary entitled, Enslaved. The six-part series features him heading

“More than 12 million Africans were enslaved and trafficked,” Jackson says in the trailer. “More than 2 million of our ancestors died in the sea. The ocean holds stories that haven’t been told.” The series will trace Jackson’s personal journey as he takes a DNA test to identify his ancestral tribe before embarking on a trip from the US to Gabon in Africa for his induction into the Benga tribe, where he will have rare access to discover the tribe’s secret ceremonies and customs, Alongside Jackson’s journey, Enslaved will also shed new light on human trafficking from Africa to America by using new diving technology to locate and examine sunken slave ships.

prah Winfrey has set up 26 billboards honouring Breonna Taylor around Louisville, Kentucky demanding justice for her death. Each billboard features the same image of Taylor that Winfrey used on the front of O, The Oprah Magazine.

Shortly after midnight on March 13, Louisville police officers executing a search warrant used a battering ram to enter the apartment of Taylor, a 26-year-old emergency room technician. Ms. Taylor and her boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, had been in bed, but got up when they heard a loud banging at the door. After a brief exchange, Mr. Walker fired his gun. The police also fired several shots, striking Ms. Taylor. Mr. Walker told investigators that Ms. Taylor coughed and struggled to breathe for at least five minutes after she was shot. She received no medical attention for more than 20 minutes after she was struck. Ms. Taylor’s mother, Tamika Palmer, said her daughter had big dreams and planned a lifelong career in health care after serving as an E.M.T. OprahMag.com revealed the billboards had been set up not only to commemorate the young technician but also to demand that the police

26

officers who shot and killed her in her Louisville home in March are arrested and charged accordingly. “Demand that the police involved in killing Breonna Taylor be arrested and charged,” the billboards read. They also display the website untilfreedom. com, an intersectional social justice organization that aims to encourage others to address systemic and racial injustice in America. Taylor was killed days ahead of what would have been her 27th birthday. Since her death, ongoing protests have taken place across the country urging for justice and an end to police brutality. Winfrey and her magazine’s billboard campaign follows the publication making history with this cover. For the first time in the magazine’s 20-year history, someone other than Winfrey appeared on the magazine’s cover. Winfrey explained her decision to honour Taylor and bring more

awareness to her case in an Instagram post when the cover first dropped. “Breonna Taylor. She was just like me. She was just like you. And like everyone who dies unexpectedly, she had plans. Plans for a future filled with responsibility and work and friends and laughter. I think about Breonna Taylor often. Imagine if three unidentified men burst into your home while you were sleeping. And your partner fired a gun to protect you. And then mayhem,” wrote Winfrey.

“What I know for sure: We can’t be silent. We have to use whatever megaphone we have to cry for justice. And that is why Breonna Taylor is on the cover of @oprahmagazine. The September issue honours her life and the life of every other Black woman whose life has been taken too soon.”

The pair are due to welcome a baby this summer having kept the pregnancy a secret. According to sources close to the couple, Ed and Cherry are said to be “overjoyed” with the news. Ed announced he would be taking a break from music last Christmas, after he spent two-and-a-half years touring across the world.

Ellen has since responded to criticism in a memo to staff saying that she is ‘sorry’ and that unspecified changes would take place. ‘As we’ve grown exponentially, I’ve not been able to stay on top of everything and relied on others to do their jobs as they knew I’d want them done. Clearly some didn’t,” she said. “That will now change and I’m committed to ensuring this does not happen again.“

BINDI IRWIN, the 22-year old daughter of the late conservationist and television personality, Steve Irwin, has announced she is expecting her first child just five months after her wedding to Chandler Powell. Irwin, a passionate conservationist like her late father, married Powell in March in the gardens of Australia Zoo in Queensland. The venue was opened by her grandparents in the 1970s and is still run by the Irwin family. Her father, known as “the Crocodile Hunter,” died in 2006 at the age of 44 when a stingray barb went through his chest during filming for a documentary. Pop sensation, NICKI MINAJ is also pregnant with her first child. The musician announced she had married her partner, Kenneth Petty, in October 2019. Sharing that she is ‘overflowing the excitement and gratitude’ the star made the announcement on Instagram.

LANA DEL REY Chemtrails Over the Country Club

Just last year Lana Del Rey released Norman F**king Rockweel!, her most acclaimed album to date, and where she really solidified her status as one of the most iconic songwriters of today. While you might think that the LA singer would want to coast on that release a little longer, she already announced that her new album Chemtrails Over the Country Club drops this month. This is her upcoming seventh studio album and sixth major-label studio album. It has been revealed as well as the album Lana is also working on two books of poetry. She shared cover art for her spoken-word poetry book Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass in April.

KEITH URBAN The Speed of Now Part 1

Keith Urban’s new project will feature a total of 16 songs with three collaborations among them. The first two songs on the project, ‘Out of the Cage’, and ‘One Too Many’ are duets with artists whom have yet to be named. The only collaboration on the album that’s been revealed is Urban’s previously released duet with Eric Church. Urban previously shared a bit of the inspiration behind the album’s title, The Speed of Now Part 1, explaining that the name came to him in October 2019 at the time when life felt like it was flying by faster than ever before. However, now, he says the title has taken on a ‘whole new meaning’ as the world battles through the coronavirus pandemic.

TRICKY Fall to Pieces

British rapper and producer Tricky release his new album, Fall to Pieces, this month. This follows his previous studio album Ununiform which dropped in November 2018. Tricky has released thirteen albums since 1995, and his career helped pioneer the grime scene that is currently dominating rap in the UK. Much of the new album features vocals from Marta Zlakowska, who filled in last minute on the first night of one of Tricky´s European tours when he was without a vocalist. The album follows a period of grief for the veteran producer and rapper, whose daughter Mazy Topley-Bird, herself a musician, died in May at the age of 24 – a moment which he described later as the “day my world ended”. In a press release for ‘Fall To Pieces’, Tricky said: “You’ve gotta f**king get up and fight. Right now I’m in fight mode. And I feel really good. I do.”

THE BABY-SITTERS CLUB: SEASON 1

Based on a novel by Margaret Atwood (itself based on a true story), Alias Grace begins with a mystery. Grace Marks is serving a sentence for murder, for which her male accomplice was hanged. Grace has numerous supporters, who hire Dr. Simon Jordan to interview Grace and hopefully reveal a truth that will absolve her. Grace’s story takes her from Ireland to Canada, where she works as a servant for the wealthy man she will allegedly kill. The show is no mere whodunit — as a member of the lower class, and a woman, Grace navigates social hierarchies that grasp at her every moment of every day.

Starring: Sophie Grace, Momona Tamada, Shay Rudolph, Malia Baker, Alicia Silverstone This television adaptation of the popular children’s novel series of the same name by Ann M. Martin has become an instant hit, with a 100% approval rating on review site Rotten Tomatoes and critics calling it “sweet, sincere, and full of hope.” Like the books, the series follows five middle-school girls who start their own babysitting business in Connecticut, and their adventures as they do so.

RUSSIAN DOLL: SEASON 1 Starring: Natasha Lyonne, Greta Lee, Yul Vazquez, Charlie Barnett, Elizabeth Ashley Natasha Lyonne brings her signature comedic stylings to this comedy-drama as Nadia, a woman stuck in a time loop who keeps reliving the same day over and over again, each time dying in increasingly freakish ways. STREAM

GENIE By Ian Greenland

Since home (...bus/train/toilets at work...) streaming became a thing, the digital landscape has teemed with content providers jostling for our eyeballs and subscription coin. Whilst Netflix and Amazon Prime remain all but ubiquitous, various upstarts have entered the ring in the form of Sling TV, Peacock, Twitch, Crackle and Crunchyroll (have those last three been at the Rice Krispies??..) Established mega brands Apple, HBO, Hulu and Youtube all continue to compete for position whilst Disney continues its march towards colourful, fluffy, big-eyed, ABSOLUTE WORLD DOMINATION with Disney+, released at the tail end of 2019. With so many viable alternatives to going out or talking to the person you’re staying in with, it’s no surprise the media have long been speculating on the “death of cinema”. How do multiplexes and smaller chains with huge overheads compete with such an affordable array of on-demand entertainment? Whilst Marvel (now Disney-owned of course) and co. have certainly done their best to supercharge the box office in the last decade, the overall industry trajectory, at least in the US has been downward. Citing a relatively unexciting release docket and more home viewing options than ever, at the dawn of 2020, analysts were already forecasting another dipped year at the box office. As per Paul Dergarabedian, Senior Media Analyst via Forbes in February, “It would be naive to think that the movie

industry does not face challenges in 2020... there are many variables in the mix and many surprises yet to come....” Looking back from our strange new world, that last remark achieves an unintentionally sinister quality – like a smirking, portentous threat from a calculating Bond villain.... COVID was that surprise and challenging it has been. Bond certainly wasn’t able to stop it. It was all he could do to get out of the way. In a watershed move for the entertainment industry, 007’s latest outing in a franchise whose every entry is a worldwide event delayed its release from April to the hopefully healthier November. Fittingly titled No Time To Die, Daniel Craig’s final Bond film is estimated to have taken a $30-50 million hit on defunct early marketing - the alternative however was a spring release into a global market full of shuttered cinemas. China’s lockdown alone would likely have cost the production a couple hundred mill in revenue. With the world’s most famous spy visibly shaken and stirred, Hollywood’s dream factory received a severe reality check. Within days, release schedules were torn up, films pulled from cinemas left and right and shoots ground to a halt. James Cameron’s already delayed Avatar sequels once more hit pause alongside production on Jurassic World: Dominion, Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, and The Matrix 4. In the UK, restrictions on working, travel and social distancing put temporary stoppers on the new Batman film, Fantastic Beasts 3, Disney’s live action update of The Little Mermaid and Netflix’s second series of The Witcher. Like us, the little people they entertain, even perma-sculpted, white-teethed celebrities are not immune to the virus’ effects. Producers have been scrabbling like mad to accommodate the crisis, in many cases attempting to repatriate cast and crew amid a global pandemic over which their insurers are still arguing about picking up the tab. Superheroes, dinosaurs, aliens, wizards, rock n’ roll gods and Keanu Reeves all shunted aside by an invisible virus and with it, further delays and uncertainty for the cinemas. For films fortunate enough to have wrapped principle production before the world’s wheels came off, a game of chicken ensued with shellshocked cinemas. The most notable of these, Chris Nolan’s highly anticipated Tenet carries the unofficial burden of reanimating the global box office. Delayed three times already, Warner Bros have now removed it from their release schedule, clearly reticent to drop a hugely expensive but potentially hugely profitable feature into an

In America, with bricks and mortar screens shuttered, a renaissance has taken place for drive-in cinema, formerly popular in the ‘50s, when the only invisible, deadly threat was deemed to be Communism. But real profitability for the industry means bums in seats and mixed messaging on masks and other safety precautions alongside flip-flopping cinema chains still has consumer confidence shaken at the prospect of sitting in a dark room packed full of strangers. Just think how wound up you got by someone coughing through a movie pre-pandemic...

from wide release to home viewing get ever shorter, cinema chains are left wringing their hands in desperation. We used to have to wait a year for a VHS and a further three before a big movie hit the TV, but now Universal have broken with the standard Hollywood good-faith practice of allowing cinemas roughly 90 days’ screening exclusivity. That genie won’t go back in its bottle, regardless of the pandemic’s trajectory from here. In response, AMC, the giant operating Odeon amongst other chains, have refused to screen any future Universal films, an understandably frustrated but self-sabotaging move which will likely hasten the exodus of blockbusters to the small screen or spell their eventual doom. Could the next film in the ever popular, increasingly expensive, exponentially ridiculous Fast and Furious franchise (the one where the writers just say “fuck it” and everyone finally goes to space) hit home screens before multiplexes....or not hit screens at all??

The reality is lockdown has not just exacerbated our existing desire for streamed content, but shifted our perception of access. Disney+ doubled its subscriber base from February to May, surpassing 50 million accounts and Universal managed to make substantial hits of The Invisible Man and Trolls: World Tour by swiftly pivoting them to on-demand viewing, the latter sequel actually outperforming its cinema-going first instalment. It’s likely that had more to do with frazzled, home-schooling parents looking for something... ANYTHING to quieten their spawn for a couple of hours as opposed to any Godfather II-esque improvements on an already revered original. Nevertheless, the precedent has now been set for blockbuster primary releases happening in homes, a model Netflix was already pushing before Wuhan hit the headlines.

Whilst the majority of large productions have recently been incentivized to return to business stimulating local economies with such special treatment as non-quarantining of big stars like Mission Impossible 7’s Tom Cruise (“big” as in famous...) and daily cast and crew antibody tests on the latest Jurassic Park sequel (good to see animatronic velociraptors treated better than NHS staff...), the industry as a whole is in turmoil and the future uncertain. Cinema has weathered storms before – the explosion of TV in the ‘50s, home video in the 80s, cable and home theatre and more recently streaming.... but mix a big dollop of desire for instant gratification with a little fear of congregation and a whole lotta recession and the future might realistically see a lot less popcorn on the floor

As our insatiable appetites for ondemand grow and exclusivity windows

….And Vin Diesel was going to go to space :-(

untested, still-reeling market. Meanwhile, cinemas were loathe to reopen without the support of a genuine box office draw to entice movie-goers back through the foyers, with giant chains Cineworld and Vue both postponing their re-openings in light of Tenet and Disney’s live action Mulan remake (yes, another one) blinking first.

Victoria Wood is a freelance writer and mother of three based in the south of Spain. Life for her is primarily based around a healthy diet, lifestyle and educating herself and those around her how to live well. Victoria has been a writer for the past twenty years and her work includes an environmental column, journalistic editorials and social media management. She is also a proofreader and editor, and is currently working on her first novel.

As a child many of you will remember being involved with or perhaps even solely responsible for some sort of domestic task, whether it was taking out the rubbish, cleaning the car, or hanging out the laundry, perhaps feeding the cat? It has been a tradition for eons to encourage children to take part in the daily runnings of life, so how do we get our little home sharing partners to learn from the jobs they are given, do we reward them with pocket money or not? What lessons do they need to learn and how do we motivate them to get stuck in?

I

think that when it comes to being a part of a household, every child needs to learn and understand the value of how that home works and what it takes to maintain it. To be a part of the machine that keeps everything running smoothly is a great lesson for that future life when it will become their own machine. Not knowing how simple domestic appliances work can be an embarrassing and limiting moment in a new adult’s life! Learning how to cook and clean a kitchen, how to take care of a car or bicycle, having a clean, hygienic and clutter-free bedroom, washing your clothes, these are all taken for granted unless a child is shown how and understands the positive reasoning behind doing these jobs.

40

entails

If you’re struggling to make the kids notice what life would be like if their parents didn’t keep things a certain way, you could go the abandon-all route to make an example. This completely ignoring the

housework and leaving everything as it would be should those laborious tasks not be taken care of. A child will soon see the mess, dirt and filthy world they would have to live in if these jobs were not kept up. This, however, is a really awful way to have to teach a lesson, and not one I would advise unless you’re in sheer desperation mode! To teach value behind a task is essential, it is so important that a child values the actual concept. For example, take something they really do value, such as a favourite toy, device, book, or clothes, and show them what would happen if they were treated badly. A cracked screen, a headless toy - you don’t have to actually physically attack their belongings but a simple explanation that things need taking care of too, living or not.

W E N E E D TO P L A C E S T R E S S O N T H E F A C T T H AT M AT E R I A L T H I N G S A R E N OT T H E M O S T I M P O R TA N T I N LIFE, BUT WHEN WE DO H AV E T H E M - L O O K I N G A F T E R T H E M I S PA R A M O U N T. Teaching them why hygiene is important, that mess, dirt and clutter can actually cause stress and illness, and prevent us from functioning at our best. There are many reasons why we keep our homes clean and tidy, and they need to understand these before they are going to feel compelled to actually take part in it.

PARENTING

I’m in two minds as to whether pocket money as a reward for chores is a good thing or not. It does, on the positive side, teach children to understand the concept of work, and that you can be rewarded for doing a good job (bonuses for extra effort?) but at the same time I also feel that kids need to be a cog in the workings of a home because they are a part of it, not just for the money. So that’s something you can decide upon, but it’s often the case that when a reward is involved you’ll get better results! A chart on the wall is always a great method in recruiting the kids to take part, this works as a kind of reward system, and encourages equality (especially if there is more than one) as you can outline a list of their responsibilities and under each day they can write their own name once they have completed a task. A bit like the bathroom cleaning rota you see on the wall in most restaurants! Another good way is to allocate a child a specific task that is theirs alone. To give them the responsibility for something that no one else in the home touches, it could be emptying the dishwasher, walking the dog, folding the washing, whatever you choose it to be it is theirs.

One very simple way to get them motivated to actually do the job, rather than play a video game or watch YouTube or message their friends, is to restrict that which they would rather do and offer the simple option of ‘chore or bore’? They’ll be very quick to jump at the chance of a chore if there is nothing else on offer especially when the reward might be to be able to return to their chosen activity. Setting a time limit can also help to motivate - if the dishwasher needs to be emptied by the time we start making dinner, you’ve got forty minutes to get it done. And of course there may well need to be a punishment set if these tasks are not completed or always require a parental nagging session! And yes within this you can actually time how long it takes them and suggest that the next time you bet they can do it faster and better, challenges always work!

If it hasn’t been done it will get noticed but also they can take pride in their own personal job.

I F YO U ’ R E M A K I N G DINNER, ASK A CHILD TO C O M E A N D B E YO U R S I O U X C H E F. T E A C H T H E M H O W TO M A K E A D I S H AND MAKE THEM FEEL P R O U D TO P R O D U C E A M E A L F O R T H E F A M I LY. This way they learn the basics about cooking, understand ingredients, recipes and where the food in front of them comes from every day. They can also tag along on a shopping trip and be given a list of items to help you collect as you go around. Stocking the fridge on return is also valuable and putting everything away means that they’ll actually know where things are and won’t have to always ask!

zone that may need a toxic warning sign on the door, so a list of rules may need to be applied. Always make the bed, have a clear and clean floor, clothes folded and put away, etc. but at the same time they are being allowed to be the ruler of their own space which can be very empowering. One of the most important points of getting the children involved in work is not to make it a punishment, more to make them feel like they are an important part of something bigger and that they are needed. Working together in the beginning can even create some positive childhood memories of washing the car, or taking the dog for a walk as a family for example.

Speaking of knowing where their things are- one way to give responsibility is to allow them to take control over their own bedroom. This could lead to a disaster

Outlining specific times and days when the chores need to be completed is imperative as it keeps a rhythm going and the child knows what is expected of them and when…another chart on the wall in the form of a calendar? Above all, this needn’t be a battle, if managed well having the kids taking part in the running of the house will just become normal life and allow them to be an important part of maintaining of their (clean and tidy) happy home.

Why Proper Hydration Is

CRUCIAL

Holistic Nutritionist and Lifestyle Cleanse Expert, Elissa Goodman has a mission to educate and encourage healthy mindful living by helping others embrace the concept that we are a product of what we eat and how we treat ourselves. After losing her husband to cancer plus fighting cancer herself, Elissa is passionate about cleansing your body and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

There is so much controversy in the world of wellness on what is actually “healthy” for you. Personally, I am a huge believer in bio-individuality, and that one person’s food can be another person’s poison, in other words, what might be extremely healing for you may not be as beneficial for your friend. However, water is the one thing that I can say is, without a doubt, essential for all people. After all, our body is made up of about 70% water so it makes sense that ingesting water is an absolute necessity for every cell in our body in order to function properly. Many of us know how important water is, however, believe it or not, 60 to 75 percent of Americans do not drink enough water on a daily basis.

So, what are the benefits of drinking water exactly?

Brain A whopping 85% of our brain is made up of water, so it is no surprise that dehydration is linked to a decrease in mood and cognitive performance. A dehydration level of just 2 percent is enough to impair performance in tasks that require attention, psychomotor function, and immediate memory skills, and if electrolyte levels are too low, dehydration can cause involuntary muscle twitching and even seizures.

Kidneys and Urinary System Being adequately hydrated is essential in helping our bodies work through the toxic load we breathe in and ingest every day. The kidneys are the main filter of the blood, and without enough fluid, they can naturally break down and expel all the toxins found in our bloodstream. This can result in something called acute kidney injury, a form of damage that puts you at higher risk for kidney disease. Further, lack of fluid intake also can be a major

44

contributor to kidney stone formation as well as low blood pressure.

Nervous system Without adequate hydration, your blood gets thicker and your body has to compensate and work harder to move it which increases your heart and respiratory rate. This essentially puts the body into stress and the brain into a state of fight-or-flight, which can then cause one to experience things like headaches, fatigue, eye strain, decreased sex drive, and decreased sleep quality.

both your digestion and overall health.

Skin Yet another reason to stay hydrated, glowing skin! Healthy skin acts as a natural barrier against germs from our environment, but insufficient fluid intake can cause cracked lips and dry, dull skin, where pathogens can enter.

Digestive System Staying hydrated is one of the best ways to ensure optimal digestion of food, detoxification of toxins through the GI tract, and adequate motility, the movement of waste through your digestive system. When we are dehydrated, we risk damaging the mucosal lining of the gut and microbiome, which are important to

Hydration Tips: Pay attention to your urine Experts recommend that we must drink enough fluids to urinate every three to four hours and urine should be a light yellow color. If your urine is dark in color, this is often a sign that you may not be drinking enough.

Try healthy alternatives to plain water

So, how much

water do we need?

Many factors contribute to how much water one should consume including body size, activity level, age, diet, and how much alcohol and coffee you drink. There are many opinions on how much water we should consume on a daily basis, however, according to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, a typical adult woman needs 11.5 cups of water a day, while a man needs 15.5 cups. The average person takes in around 20 percent of their water needs through food, which means women should drink about 9 cups a day, and men should drink 12.5. A good basic rule of thumb is to divide your body weight (in pounds) by 2. This gives you how many ounces of water you should be drinking each day. Then, to find your optimal amount of 8 oz cups per day, divide that number by 8.

Infuse plain water with fruits to make it more interesting! My favorite additions are lemon slices, cucumber, and mint! Other hydrating drinks include bone broth, sparkling water, herbal teas, cold-pressed juices, and unsweetened nut milk. Coconut water is also a delicious way to soak up hydrating vitamins and minerals and is one of nature’s most hydrating drinks.

Eat water-rich foods Water-rich fruit and vegetables, such as cucumbers and celery, are packed with electrolytes like magnesium, calcium potassium, and sodium, which are key components to staying hydrated! As many of you may know, another way I love to stay hydrated while also increasing my nutrient intake is by consuming soup! Check out my S.O.U.P cleanse to rejuvenate your body and jumpstart a healthy lifestyle!

Be aware of dehydrating foods and diets High-protein diets can be dehydrating, so it is especially important to hydrate and incorporate water-carrying veggies regularly if you are following a paleo or keto plan. Caffeine and alcohol are diuretics, meaning they can cause you to actually lose water. So make sure to balance your caffeinated and boozy drinks with at least the same amount of H2O.

Since we were kids, we have been told to “drink water” in response to every complaint and ailment growing up, and although we know that water is not a cure-all, it is pretty close to it. Staying hydrated is vital for the proper functioning of every organ and each system in our body. If you feel thirsty, you are already dehydrated, so fill up your favorite water jug and bring it everywhere with you to remind yourself to hydrate throughout the day!

Once you taste a truly authentic and ancient practice which has not been diluted for the modern person, there is no turning back.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU?

The one thing that saddens me about the yoga industry is the dilution of traditional yoga practice down to some kind of exercise or breathing techniques. Yoga is a science of self-realization not just some movements or what appears to be breathing techniques on the surface. The boom in 200-hour teacher training courses run by unqualified individuals has been a big part of this recently but already the dilution problem began well before that with the modern yogis. In my opinion, yoga teachers should only be trained by real masters who have complete awareness of their true self and who live a 100% yogic lifestyle. I have seen teacher trainers who smoke or drink, are themselves a mess, and have not actually lived yoga within themselves. How can one impart knowledge that they do not even understand or live themselves?

I’m currently working with a friend on a big project to launch a wellness app where we want to ensure traditional authentic yoga practice is spread across the world. I also hope to bring prana kriya yoga teacher trainings to Marbella in the future as it’s the most powerful yoga practice out there. Depending on the world situation I may also create smaller online courses focused on specific topics to help teachers and students develop further.

DO YOU OFFER ANY OTHER SERVICES? I also do healing sessions for a whole range of problems such as traumas, pain, misalignment, stress, chronic problems and more. I also teach people Reiki.

MY MISSION IN LIFE I want to help awaken the planet and touch as many lives as possible. There is a more beautiful way to live life without afflictions, suffering, addictions, dramas, dependencies, greed, distractions, ignorance etc. Once we internalize our awareness, stop reacting to everything and just remain present with whatever is in front of us, life becomes more comfortable and peaceful. To get in touch with Kaivalyananda visit www.kaivalyananda.life where you can find out about live online classes in both English and Spanish, pre-recorded classes which you can purchase, healing sessions, yoga and reiki trainings.

A week of transformation with Yogi Kaivalyananda... I arrived in Spain feeling broken, physically, mentally and emotionally, after losing my Mum to cancer. After only one day, which included a one-hour meditation, a healing session, yin yoga by the pool and then sunset yoga with awesome views, I felt amazing. During my week with Kaivalyananda I watched him help so many people, in his classes and by taking the time to reply to messages, with compassion, giving hope and practical advice for their individual challenges. Of course, I still miss my mum but I now feel strong and determined to make the most of life’s opportunities – Alison, Scotland, UK

Many people didn’t know of the existence of the endocannabinoid system until the revelations began about how cannabis can help stimulate it. But it is not just the phytocannabinoids in the plant that stimulate this integral part of us, exercise, nutrition and mental stimulation all do too and that is essential for a healthy body and mind.

It is important that we find what we need to heal ourselves in these times and as we are unique what works well for one person may not suit someone else.

IN THE DECONSTRUCTED SERIES, HILDE VAN MAS & FJBAUR WORK WITH UNCONVENTIONAL SHAPES, MATERIALS AND IN A MERGING AREA OF ART, FASHION AND PLASTIC. THIS LEADS TO THE SYNTHESIS OF UNUSUAL MATERIALS. PACKAGING PLASTIC, STYROFOAM, LACQUER TEXT AND SECOND-HAND CLOTHING ARE STAGED FOR THE POPART FAKE FASHION.

THE VIEWER SHOULD BE DECEIVED. FAKE FASHION, WHICH AT FIRST GLANCE LOOKS LIKE WEARABLE CLOTHING, WAS CREATED ENTIRELY FROM DISPOSABLE ITEMS. THE STAGING, IMPLEMENTED IN PHOTOGRAPHY, SHOWS GRACEFUL, HIGHQUALITY STAGED DREAM CREATURES AS A COUNTERPOINT TO THE RAPID CONSUMPTION OF AN EVER-GROWING THROWAWAY SOCIETY. THE ARTWORK CALLS FOR A RETURN TO VALUE AND SUSTAINABILITY. A DIFFICULT BUT NECESSARY PATH IN THE SENSE OF THE COMING GENERATIONS. BEAUTIFUL THINGS CAN ALSO ARISE FROM DISCARDED ITEMS.

Excuse me… what about me?!

I

88

am not sure why I haven’t been mentioned yet in TINE’S CORNER. As co-owner of International Marbella and, if I do say so myself, a bit of a celebrity around Marbella, I think I should have space for “Boxy’s Corner” enabling me to update you on my busy schedule. So, let me start from the beginning. When I was 36 hours old, I was found in a shoebox in a garbage bin, where I had been crying for an eternity, trying to get someone to feed me. That was when fate stepped in and I was rescued by Tine who immediately adopted me.

During my childhood the doctors kept telling me I was going to be tall, dark and handsome, but things ended up slightly different. I will admit, I would not exactly call myself handsome, but I do have this charming underbite and huge personality which gets a lot of attention.

My early days were very hard, as I had to learn to suck milk, walk and much more. Being only tiny, I liked being carried around in Tine’s handbag, it made me feel safe and cosy. Everyone thought I would not survive (silly them), but I am much stronger than I look and got through the first month, after which life was great.

Like I mentioned before, I am co-owner of International Marbella, so you can always find me everyday in the office lying in my usual spot beside Tine, watching the comings and goings of the office. One might call me a bit of a guard dog, but since I am not currently filming anything, I thought I would help out the team. So, if you ever want an autograph, just pop by!

Some of you might know me already, through my many appearances on several national TV programs like “Business on 1st Class”, “Sun for Millions” and “Key to Success”, but I am sure Tine will fill you in more on these at some stage.

Homecooked is Chic... What is an open house cocktail launch? - “Champagne & Canapes” My motto is less-is-more, think “Homecooked is Chic”. This allows for our colleagues around Marbella to visit a property and absorb the atmosphere bringing it foremost in their minds due to having experienced a pleasant networking hour.

The night before I tend to start the preparation of canapés, including my signature dishes, caviar cream with quails’ eggs, smoked salmon on rye with dill cream, mature cheddar tartar and ham mousse pancake rolls. For my team and other professionals, this is a great way to mingle, keeping them updated with happenings in the real estate market. I pride myself on having given birth to the “Cocktail Launch” brought with me from London and now a formal part of any Agency’s Marketing Program. In our current Covid-19 environment entertaining at home with close friends and family is becoming a big part of our lives – so I have decided to share with my followers some inside tricks of easy and quick ways to reach a glamourous goal serving my most popular cocktails with trendy canapés.

AS GOOD AS IT GETS We attended:

the Charity Golf Day at Aloha Golf Club, one of the most beautiful and well-kept golf courses in Spain. Over 100 golfers turned out to support the DEBRA charity which included on-course competitions like Beat the Pro, sponsored by the Stephen Palmer Golf Academy. The generosity of the golfers raised nearly 3000€ for the charity. All the players enjoyed fantastic playing conditions, with stunning fairways and lightening greens which caught out a few players especially the wooden spoon winner! And, as always, a great time was had back at La Sala, where food & drink were taken before the presentation and auction.

We congratulated:

all the winners especially La Sala Golf individual winner Luke Woods Jnr., who shot an impressive 40 points.

Special thanks to...

Lindsey Medina and her team at La Sala for their hard work and dedication.

Next event:

will be held on 5th September at the stunning Rio Valle Romano Club. Come join the fun. Contact lindsey@salagroupholdings.com.

After suffering with really fine hair and struggling to grow a beautiful mane, Miss Wigs owner Kelly, resorted to achieving a thick, glossy main through extensions. However, after qualifying in extensions it became apparent to her that not every woman is suitable for a head of extensions. After spending time with clients and seeing such amazing women suffering from hair loss conditions or thinning hair Kelly started to become passionate about helping them, so went away to qualify in hair mesh integration and wig making. ¨From perfecting the wig build, technical cutting to the perfect colour. Designing and creating wigs for my clients is the most rewarding and humbling experience I’ve ever gone through. Masking the real issue LET’S PROTECT PEOPLE AND THE PLANET WITH REUSABLE FACE MASKS By Hiroaki Odachi

110

While the COVID-19 pandemic continues to devastate countries like the United States and Brazil, scientists around the world are reinforcing the importance of wearing face masks to prevent the transmission of the virus.

Every challenge is a moment to learn. I’ve realized there are two important lessons for us here: (1) wear a mask to protect people; and (2) choose a reusable mask whenever possible to protect people and the planet.

The increasing use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as face masks means that we are also witnessing a massive increase of disposable waste much of it made from plastic.

Wearing a face mask is not just about protecting yourself: it is also about protecting others. As with many other cultures, caring for other people is a huge part of our values in my country Japan.

Where I live, wearing a face mask is not a new thing - we actually have a long history of wearing face masks which dates back to the 1918 Flu Pandemic. Every year when influenza or hay fever season arrives, many people in the country start wearing face masks. If you go to a crowded place, such as a morning train in Tokyo during commuting times, you will see lots of people wearing face masks.

Now, because of COVID-19, even more people are wearing masks; so much so that it would feel weird for me to walk outside the streets without wearing one. If the pandemic is sending a message to all of us, it may be that we should redevelop our culture based on our common humanity. For me, using a reusable face mask is an act of altruism which leads to protecting our society and environment. Reusable masks may not be the only solution to prevent infection but as health experts say, it helps not to spread infection if you wear one.

The increase of PPE is adding another level to an already severe global waste issue and we must listen to health experts and act accordingly. Unless you are in the front lines; such as a health or essential worker, experts state that you can avoid a disposable mask and use a reusable one instead. Wearing a reusable mask, which can be made at home, may sound like a small thing compared to the big picture, but it is actually a very critical and positive action you can take for yourself, for others, and for the environment.

Listen to science, not industry lobbyists

We are currently being tested by one of the most important moments in history. We really need to reach beyond borders and work together to make decisions that protect both our health and our environment.

If billions of people around the world choose disposable masks day after day to deal with this crisis, we’re going to find ourselves in another one. Look around, we’re already in way over our heads with disposable plastic. Let’s protect people and the planet during this global pandemic by choosing a reusable mask whenever possible. We will get through this TOGETHER.

LOCAL

Plastic

At Society Marbella we champion those who give back to our community. To say thank you and highlight their efforts we have decided to take the time to talk to one local hero each month to help raise awareness for the deserving charities and organisations they spend their time supporting.

Patrol with...

Deirdre O’Regan

Can you share with us a little bit about the work you have been doing? With so much plastic, wet wipes, cigarette butts and rubbish washing up and littering our beautiful beaches I felt I had to do something to help try and protect our environment so a couple of years ago I set up regular, monthly beach cleans at my workplace where likeminded work colleagues could volunteer a couple of hours to help clean up the two beaches by our resort, CLCWorld in Mijas Costa. In 2019 we collected a staggering 730 kilos of plastic and rubbish! Many volunteers brought along family, friends and their pooches too. I set up “There is No Planet B” campaign to raise awareness in the workplace of the amount of plastic and single use items we were all consuming on a daily basis and so much rubbish ending up in our seas. Through everyone’s efforts and in a very short time, we managed to drastically reduce single use plastics and other disposables throughout our resorts and many adapted eco changes in their home lives as a result of the campaign. The summer camp for staff’s children also ran weekly beach cleans and launched the Reduce, Reuse, Return, Recycle box where holidaymakers leaving the resort could drop off any unwanted beach items (e.g. buckets, spades) and new arrivals could pick up and reuse these items. Why did you feel the need to do you bit? We are all aware of the damage we are doing to our fragile earth and raising awareness and educating people on how to take care of our planet is critical for everyone. What was your motivation to help out your local community in this way?

112

I love the ocean and all things nature and believe we all have a responsibility to take care of our beautiful planet. How have you found the local community have reacted to your work? Response to the ‘There is No Planet B’ campaign and the beach cleans has been really positive – lots of senior management participation and many of the same volunteers turned up each month, sometimes bringing along a new volunteer. What have you enjoyed most about your recent efforts? Bringing together like minded individuals and their positiveness in doing their bit for the planet. (If everyone, globally, picked

up just 3 pieces of rubbish off the beach imagine what a difference that would make!)

out there and any local events are usually well publicised. Mimoana (www.mimoana.com) is an excellent movement here on the Costa del Sol and in collaboration with local ayuntamientos hosts regular beach and costal cleans.

share with people wanting to help in their local community but don´t know where to start?

again so we can continue to clean up our oceans; raising awareness through education programmes and workshops on ways we can all help to save our seas and reduce pollution.

“We all How can people join you have a and help? responsibility We had just recommenced to take our 2020 beach cleans when Covid hit, but hope What are you hoping to care of our achieve over the next 6 that we can start up again whenever we are back to months? beautiful “normal”. I would love to have the planet.” beach cleans operational What message would you Check out Facebook and join different environmental groups – there are plenty

By Ian Greenland

Call me weird, but I like spiders (HATE flies) so whilst carefully removing one from the kitchen last week I was entreating my four year old to go easy on the hairy little weirdos. We got talking about fears, then phobias (new word of the day for him) and I foolishly revealed I had a (still undiagnosed but very flipping real) phobia of “extreme dryness”. Like yourselves, he scrunched his face up in confusion and cocked his head condescendingly (“they grow up so fast”), so I recounted to him its apparent origins, avoiding any of the swear words you’re about to read... My earliest recollection of this affliction is from the age of eight or nine. My mum’s hobby was pottery. I vividly recall handling a vase she’d made and feeling my toes practically curl at the hideous aridness of the rough, dry clay on its unglazed underside. It sent a shiver through me strong enough it was all I could do not to drop it. Just thinking on it now makes me shudder. When I cast my mind back again to a ten year old Kevin Herbert scratching dried mud off his pasty legs with his fingernails after football practise I struggle not to retch.... As the small dust cloud wafted round

114

the back of his mum’s Fiat Uno, his grubby little paws scratching faster and faster across his shins, I retreated further and further into the upholstery before eventually throwing up on my P.E. kit. The first day of secondary school, I thought nothing could be worse than being forced to wear the uniform’s rough, itchy jumpers, but then I got plonked next to a spotty oik who’d relentlessly chew the wiry cuff of his throughout Geography. The cheap polyester would actually squeak between his teeth, his tongue pressed gormlessly against the harsh fabric as he worked his jaw mechanically like the model shark in Jaws, dead-eyed, chin on his desk, head tilted sideways, that perfect purchase on his own sleeve tantalisingly out of reach.... I wanted to jump out the fucking window. Labouring for my dad’s construction firm at 16 I realised a building site might not be the ideal place for someone with an aversion to dryness, dust and rough textures but I decided it was time to overcome my condition with shock therapy. Intentionally desiccating my gloveless hands with a liberal application of brick dust and sandpaper, instead of heading for the washbasin come lunchtime, I resolved to rub my palms together until the sensation no longer made me want to slither out of my own skin. I was determined to overcome this terrible affliction if it took all afternoon... ...Five minutes later, having gagged on my own bile I was asking the man in the local Londis if they sold moisturiser.

The perfect storm of all this irrational trauma came with a trip to the dentist regular readers may recall from a previous article. By far the worst aspect was not the ineffective anaesthetic, botched filling, exposed root, bleeding gums, gruff, profusely sweaty orthodontist or even the £200 bill at the end, but those little cotton bundles they push down between your lips and gums. I was back in Geography class. I could hear squeaking. Charlie in the trees!! Any saliva I had left in my terrified mouth was instantly sucked into these little white vortices along with a fair bit of blood. In my heightened state of oral discomfort and chair-bound anxiety, the dentist might as well have been demanding to know the whereabouts of the microfilm whilst force-feeding me a frigging beach towel. 90 minutes later, when the butchery was complete (though ultimately unsuccessfully), these cotton swabs had to be peeled from my mouth, having parasitically assimilated themselves to my now ashen face. I left on wobbly knees... ...Cut to five years later and my infant son laughs hysterically as he chases me round the house, furiously licking his T-shirt and shoving teddies’ heads

10% OF THE US POPULATION SUFFER PHOBIAS, THE MOST COMMON BEING PRETTY PREDICTABLE: CREEPY CRAWLIES, CROWDS, DOGS, SNAKES, THE DENTIST..

in his mouth just to watch me squirm. I knew he was a troll, so why did I give him agency? Of course he doesn’t share my phobia. He could eat a beach towel for breakfast; that’s not even gross to him. He doesn’t seem phased by a mouthful of sand in the park, he once snarfed “something” he found down the back of the child car seat we bought on gumtree and I still have to keep an eye on him when we walk past litter bins in town overflowing with last night’s discarded chips.

Then you’ve got the freaks like me whose fear seems particularly irrational. Having really dry fingertips is unlikely to ever cause me real harm.... not discounting the slim chance a deranged dentist threatens to push me from a height into a pit of venomous snakes and spiders in a thunderstorm unless I can quickly leaf to a specific page in a large book... and before you say “Just lick your finger”, he’s put those fucking cotton things in OK?!!..... could happen.

be spider-Jesus??

which is the fear of having a fear - aka Inception phobia and Allodoxaphobia.... the fear of opinions?!?! I mean, you’re screwed these days if you’ve got that last one aren’t you? You’d be better off being scared of facts, cos there’s far less of them flying about the internet.

NOMOPHOBIA, WHICH IS THE FEAR OF NOT HAVING Now, that child knows MOBILE PHONE my kryptonite. Googling “weirdest By attempting to phobias”, you’ll ACCESS - AKA, save arachnids find Nomophobia, from damnation, I is the fear of BEING ALIVE IN THE which inadvertently put my not having mobile own head on the FIRST WORLD AND phone access - aka, block. As if my life being alive in the first hadn’t been hard and BETWEEN THE AGES world and between dry enough already, the ages of 13 and OF 13 AND 30 now i’m expected to 30, phobophobia, Of course i’m not the only one living through intense adversity. Approximately 10% of the US population suffer phobias, the most common being pretty predictable: Creepy crawlies, crowds, dogs, snakes, the dentist... Those they can’t “defend themselves” against with a semi-automatic like heights, thunder and lightning and the dark must be particularly terrifying.

But that’s just my opinion. Oops.

TORQUE TALK

MOTORING AUTHOR, RACING DRIVER AND PHOTO-JOURNALIST IAN KUAH REPORTS ON THE

KOENIGSEGG GEMERA

117

TORQUE TALK

I also drove his working concept car, some of whose basic design tenets can still be seen in Koenigsegg models more than a quarter of a Century later. At the time a major stumbling block to Christian’s dream was the fact that his family lived in Sweden, a country renowned for its tough Saab and Volvo family cars, but absolutely no history of making supercars. Of course there is a first time for everything, and before Ferrari (founded 1947) and Lamborghini (founded 1963) bowed in Italy had no supercar manufacturers either. Then there was the small matter of raising money and finding the expertise to get the first ever Swedish supercar off the drawing board. Fortunately, back in 1994 the Swedish business development agency had a scheme called NUTEK whose mission was to select promising new technology and ideas. The chosen ones would be suitably financed and specialist consultants appointed to help bring them to a state of commercially viability. Christian’s father, Jesko was a successful businessman with good contacts in the agency. He simply told his son,

To his surprise Christian did exactly that, and with more of his son’s excitement rubbing off on him daily, Jesko soon became the project’s biggest champion. In the end the NUTEK board told the pair that their presentation was one of the best they had ever seen, and promised all the support they could muster.

118 118

I drove the Koenigsegg prototype in 1996, but the first production CC8S was not delivered until 2002. In the intervening years I almost forgot about Christian von Koenigsegg and assumed that his dream had gone up in smoke the way so many supercar dreams tend to do. The specialist car industry is a very unkind business, and the long list of specialist start ups dating back to the early 1980s testifies that only Koenigsegg and Pagani have made the cut and prospered. Fast forward to 2020, and with multiple production car world speed records behind them, as well as several patents on ground breaking automotive technologies, Koenigsegg

TORQUE TALK

has just announced the Gemera, its 13th model and the world’s first four-seater mega-GT. So what is a mega-car? The term ‘supercar’ has been around since the 1970s and today’s entry-level Ferrari, Lamborghini and McLaren models are considered supercars. That said, in a big upset to the status quo some modern super saloons like the Audi RS6, BMW M5 and E63S AMG are practically as fast, and can carry four people and their luggage too.

119

TORQUE TALK

With the debut of faster and more exotic machines like the Ferrari Enzo, Porsche Carrera GT and Pagani Zonda in the opening years of the 21st Century, the new term ‘hypercar’ was coined. The Bugatti Veyron and Chiron, LaFerrari, Porsche 918 Spyder, Pagani Huayra and the various Koenigsegg models that followed continued to push the performance and price boundaries to an even higher plane. When Koenigsegg unveiled the One:1 in 2014, powered by a 1,341 hp (more than 1 Megawatt of power!) 5.0 litre twinturbo V8 motor, they paved the way for the age of the Megacar. On 4 November 2017 the Agera RS set a new production car speed record with an average speed of 447 km/h (278 mph). It also broke the 0-400-0 km/h world record with a time of 33.29 sec. On 23 September 2019 the Koenigsegg Regera slashed that previously unbeaten 0-400-0 km/h time to just 31.49 sec.

Gemera is an amalgam of two Swedish words; “Ge’ means give and ‘mera’ means more. This is quite fitting since this ground-breaking model carries four people and their luggage without compromising its primary role as a megacar. In styling terms the Gemera is a pure Koenigsegg. Its front harks back to that very first Koenigsegg CC prototype I drove in 1996, while design features that have evolved since like the hidden A-pillars, the pure compound curves, short overhangs and both concealed and external aerodynamic aids. The Gemera has a smooth and pure shape whose organic form with

120 120

wraparound glazed cabin features nicely integrated aerodynamic addenda like the deep front air splitters and ducktail rear spoiler. Below this the underbody airflow management exits with a large racecar style rear diffuser whose presence is played down by its matt black carbon-fibre finish. A nice feature that highlights the combustion engine is the two topmounted exhaust outlets for the bespoke titanium exhaust system made for Koenigsegg by Akrapovic in Slovenia. Pioneered on the Porsche 918 Spyder this design facilitates the shortest path for the escaping gases and reduces exhaust weight and space requirements in the engine bay. It also looks really cool. The clever packaging for four occupants and their bespoke luggage revolves around the 3,000 mm long wheelbase that maximises interior room and ride

comfort. Ingress and egress are though the long trademark KATSAD (Koenigsegg Automated Twisted Synchrohelix Actuation Doors) door design with no B-pillars. Their extra length requires sensors to stop their upward travel if there is an obstacle above like a low roof. Climbing in and out of the front seats is normal for a car of this type, and is made easier by the long doors and lack of a B-pillar. The front seats are comfortable, and the wide cabin and panoramic front screen delivers a sense of light and space. Rear facing cameras on slim stalks replace exterior mirrors, and their images are relayed to the small screens either side of the dashboard. We have seen this system in action before on the Audi e-tron, but because the rear-view screens in the Gemera are placed at almost the same level and angle you would expect to see

TORQUE TALK

the images from normal mirrors, you do not experience the mental disconnect you get with the Audi system. Christian was not joking when he said the Gemera is a real four-seater, and once I was in the rear seat I found the leg and headroom more than adequate for my 1.7 m frame. That said, the aperture between the front seat when motored forwards and the bodywork of this low car means getting into the back is far easier than getting out again. Egress certainly needs some thought from a

lady with a short skirt, and is tricky for an elderly person. With its range, speed and comfort the Gemera is a natural for conveying four people across continents. To maximise the available space in the front and rear luggage compartments Koenigsegg commissioned Douchebags™ to create bespoke hard cases that meet the maximum airline carry-on specification. One case sits flat in the shallow front luggage bay, while the remaining three are stowed vertically in the deep rear compartment.

121

TORQUE TALK

The Gemera has been designed from day one for worldwide homologation. So whether you live in Europe, the Americas, the Middle East or Asia the carbonfibre monocoque meets all the existing emissions and crash safety regulations, and as you would expect in its role as a family car ISOFIX is available for the rear seats. Using a 600 hp combustion engine and electric drive the Gemera has a combined output of 1,700 hp, with an incredible 3,500 Nm of torque. Thanks to 4WD it rockets to 100 km/h in 1.9 sec, and on to a 400 km/h Vmax. The 4WD Gemera has an unusual drivetrain. Where electric cars normally have either one motor per wheel or one motor per axle, the Gemera has one 500 hp electric motor on each rear wheel. The E-motor on the crankshaft of the combustion engine produces 400 hp and 500 Nm of torque, and is sent to the front axle via a carbon-fibre propshaft. All-wheel steering and torque vectoring enhance high speed stability and low speed agility. The internal combustion engine is a dry-sump, twinturbocharged 2.0 litre, threecylinder (666.7cc per cylinder) unit good for 600 hp at 7,500 rpm and 600 Nm of torque from 2,000 to 7,000 rpm. The incredible efficiency of this diminutive engine is down to the patented free-valve technology that does away with conventional camshafts and valvetrain, thus removing weight and friction from the equation.

122 122

Weighing just 70kg, this compact engine has an output of 300hp/litre, a number way beyond that of any street legal motor that has gone before. With a massive output for its size, it is appropriately nicknamed the Tiny Friendly Giant (TFG). Another key to efficiency is the single gear concept of the Koenigsegg Direct Drive (KDD) system that pares significant weight compared to tradition hybrid drivetrains in terms of weight, cost, complexity and packaging. Apart from being able to

react to throttle inputs much faster this system reduces power loss through the drivetrain by a as much as 5% at highway speeds. While horsepower delivers top speed, torque is the significant factor for acceleration. Here the torqueconverting HydraCoup system effectively doubles the combined 1,100 Nm of twisting force from the TFG and front e-motor up to 3,000 rpm. This gives the Gemera 3,500 Nm of torque off the line, and allows it to go from standstill to 400 km/h in a single gear.

CARAGE

Carage in Lucerne debuted in 2018 as the sales and service dealer for Koenigsegg in Switzerland, with a brand new state-of-the-art facility also geared up to look after other high-end sportscars and collectible classic cars.

The flipside for the hybrid drivetrain of this 1,850 kg four-seater is ground breaking efficiency. While the combustion engine primarily runs on normal unleaded petrol, if you use Gen 2.0 E85 ethanol or CO2 neutral methanol, the Gemera can be as CO2 neutral as a pure EV, but without its inherent range limitations. A 50 km range is claimed on a full charge from the 800 Volt, 15 kWh battery alone, while the hybrid drivetrain promises an additional range of 950 km under ideal conditions.

Earlier this year Carage decided to extend their services to Marbella and opened their showroom in Puerto Banus this July. The investment in this ‘invitation only’ facility has already payed off, with four or five people signing up for a new Koenigsegg within three weeks of the company opening their doors. Carage Marbella benefits from factory-trained technicians who know every nut and bolt on the various Koenigsegg models. And as with their sister company in Lucerne, they can

even refurbish and update a post-2010 Koenigsegg to look like one of the latest models. The waiting list for these bespoke, hand-built Koenigsegg cars means it will be two-years from the signing of the contract before an owner can take delivery. Many would-be owners take up the option of a visit to the factory in Ängelholm, Sweden, situated on a former Swedish Air Force fighter base. There they can select the paint and interior trim and discuss other bespoke touches, as well as use the old airfield runway next door for a high speed test drive well away from the public. Many return later to see their cars being assembled in a process you could say is akin to haute couture tailoring for cars.

When we took our first ride in the Gemera at Ascari the TFG motor was undergoing endurance testing on the dyno back in Sweden, so we were on silent battery/electric power only. The car looked really amazing on the move and we can’t wait to hear the TFG motor in full battle cry! The idea of a mega-family car clearly appeals to wealthy enthusiasts, and Koenigsegg has taken many orders for the 1.38 million-euro Gemera from around the world. The first customers cars are scheduled for production in 2022.

COSTA CUISINE COSTA CUISINE

Bettina, our resident foodie, offers her insider knowledge on plant based cuisine and takes us on a culinary journey as she travels the world in search of gastronomic inspiration

A

s we enter the month of September, we still have some of the abundant harvest from the summer, but we are slowly entering the autumnal season with its new flavours. This week’s vegetable is the humble green bean. With over 130 varieties (cultivars) or pod beans known to us. Out of those, the green bean varieties are the most common and easiest to grow at home.

Let us not confuse green beans and runner beans. The difference between them is simple they are two different plants. But if you ask the difference between green beans, bobby beans, French beans, haricot verts, Kenyan beans, Italian beans not to mention purple and yellow green beans, it all becomes a bit more complicated. Let me explain...

Runner beans – how to cook them, and when are they in season? Runner beans (phaseolus coccineus) and green beans (phaseolus vulgaris) are completely different plants. Runner beans are priced less, the plants yield more but the surface of the bean is rough, flat

and the green pods need to be de-strung and cut, diagonally, into smaller pieces. Boil them for three minutes, toss in olive oil, fresh herbs and a squeeze of lemon and finish with salt and pepper. If you don’t have time, they are not worth bothering with, but if you have grown them yourself make time for them as they are delicious. On that note let’s talk about my favourite bean to eat and cook with, green beans! They come in rounded shapes, flat, stringy, sweet and absolutely delicious. They can be eaten raw, cooked or blanched. I am going to share one of my all-time favourite green bean recipes with you. In this recipe I use a French bean, but you can easily use any type of green bean. I love using the long flat beans that you will find at farmers markets at the end of summer. This recipe was handed down to me by two amazing Egyptian clients who insisted that they teach me one of their traditional dishes whilst attending one of my Wellness Retreats. I have been cooking it ever since and every time I do it converts none green bean eaters into new found fans! I have been cooking this dish ever since and it is a retreat classic whenever I can source goodquality beans and when they are in season of course.

Serves 4 500 g (1 lb 2 oz) green beans – any type, flat or French, it’s up to you, trimmed olive oil, for frying 3–4 garlic cloves, peeled and sliced 1 yellow onion, sliced 1 teaspoon sumac 1/2 teaspoon chilli flakes (red pepper flakes) 400 g (14 oz) tin of good-quality tomatoes 1–2 medjool dates, stoned (pitted) pink Himalayan salt or sea salt and black pepper, to taste

Method

To serve: Fresh parsley or coriander (cilantro) Handful of watercress or rocket (arugula) and chopped nuts

This can be eaten straight away or made and enjoyed later, as long as it’s stored in an airtight container. I like to top mine with rocket, chopped nuts and some parsley or coriander.

Tidy up the beans – if you are using big flat beans, chop them into 4 pieces, if you are using French beans, cut them in half. Heat a good glug of olive oil in a large pan, the greener the better in my opinion. Add the garlic and onion and gently fry for about 10 minutes until soft. Add the sumac and chilli and give everything a good stir, then add the beans, salt and pepper and tomatoes, put a lid on and gently simmer for 15 minutes. Check on the beans once and give them a stir. For the last 10 minutes of cooking, tear a date or 2 into the mix and stir. Take the lid off and let it simmer.

Last but not least some green bean cooking tips: One of my favourite ways to cook green beans is to blanch them until tender yet crisp and dip them into a vinaigrette which makes a lovely starter or great none bread pre dinner nibble. Green beans also make a great low-carb snack, but are also a wonderful addition to salads, casseroles and soups.
