GREY GOOSE IS CONSIDERED WORLD’S BEST VODKA

Grey Goose vodka has been recognized as No. 1 vodka* by the most prestigious international institutions Grey Goose Vodka, world’s favourite luxury vodka**, is created with one goal – to be the world’s best tasting vodka. Grey Goose is the vodka chosen for the most important and glamorous international events, such as Cannes, Oscars, Golden Globes and the Baftas film festivals. Made in Cognac, France, home to the world’s most respected experts in spirits making, Grey Goose vodka benefits from the region’s rich history of creating luxury foods, wines and spirits. The Maître de Chai (cellar master) for Grey Goose vodka ensures that every element of its production is of the highest quality. He selects 100% of the finest French wheat, the same wheat used to create delicious French pastries, and employs an exclusive fivestep distillation process to concentrate its exceptional flavor. Pure spring water naturally filtered through Champagne limestone is then blended with the spirit. Only when the spirit has reached its optimal taste is the maître de chai truly satisfied. Grey Goose vodka is lush, smooth and rounded and melts in the mouth with a long-lasting, satisfying finish.

Grey Goose Cosmopolitan Method Combine 3 parts of Grey Goose vodka, ½ part of Cointreau, ½ part of cranberry juice and a squeeze of lime from ½ lime into a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake and strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with an orange twist.

*Awarded as “The Number One Vodka” by The Luxury Institute in 2007 **Honored as “The world’s best tasting Vodka” by Beverage Institute of Chicago in 1998.

T

he summer season is upon us and we have great news for you. So much news in fact that we are happy to be bringing you this bumper issue that is bursting at the seams with information, interviews and insights into what is going on in and around Marbella in the coming months. Look out for copies of Society Marbella and its sister publications, FOC and Confeti, when you get off the plane, as our magazines are soon to be handed out to passengers as they arrive at Málaga airport,

making them the perfect platform for any tourist-related business. We are also branching out into the travel industry ourselves with the launch of our own affinity based travel division, Icon Travel. Check the website for further details. Good news for everyone living, working or on holiday in Marbella – the real estate sector is showing signs of a real upturn, this is echoed in our ever expanding ‘Keep It Real’ section. About time! We were getting tired of the word “recession”.

Another sign of Marbella’s recovery are the large number of concerts that will be taking place in the area over the summer. Heart throb Peter Andre is scheduled to make an appearance at Pinillo Beach on July 22, we guess regular visitor to the coast, Katie Price, will be out of town for this one. Don’t miss the Queen Tribute concert on Aug 5 also at Pinillo Beach. Brought to you by the team who delivered the amazing Abba concert in the Marbella bullring last year, this show is sure to get Marbella rocking to the tunes of Queen.

And if those are not to your taste, then look out for Sophie Ellis Bextor at Nikki Beach on August 25. We will have an exclusive interview with the Murder On the Dancefloor singer in our August issue. Don’t forget that if you are organising an event in Marbella, you can list it for free on our website where our regular blogs are receiving amazing feedback from fans all over the world. Our website is also an opportunity for you to connect to our readers with a link to your own business webpage. Enjoy! Andy Clark

A

fter a quiet spell, Jennifer Lopez is back looking fitter and more beautiful than ever. Famed for a string of hits including Waiting for Tonight, Love Don’t Cost a Thing and the new On the Floor, as well as her recent role as a judge on American Idol, we champion the 41 year old for never giving up her crown.

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT

Jennifer Lynn Lopez American actress, singer, dancer, fashion designer, television personality and record producer (is there anything this woman can’t do?) Born July 24 1969 From The Bronx, New York, USA

* Daughter of Puerto Rican

parents, Jennifer Lopez grew up in the Bronx, New York, and was raised Roman Catholic. She has two siblings, Lynda and Leslie.

* Her upbringing was far from

ordinary. She spent her entire academic career in Catholic schools, and landed her first film role aged 16 in the 1987 film My Little Girl. She financed singing and dancing lessons for herself from the age of 19. After attending Baruch College (one of the most competitive colleges in the US with an acceptance rate of 23%) for one semester, Lopez dropped out and divided her time between working as a notary public in a legal office, dance classes and dance performances in Manhattan night clubs, nothing as glamourous as she is used to these days.

* After months of audition-

ing for dance roles, Lopez was selected as a dancer for various rap music videos, a 1990 episode of Yo! MTV Raps and as a backup dancer for the New Kids on the Block and their performance of the song Games for the American Music Awards in 1991.

* She gained her first regular

high-profile job as a “Fly Girl” dancer on the television comedy programme In Living Colour from 1991-1993. Shortly afterwards, Lopez became a backup dancer for Janet Jackson and made an appearance in her 1993 video That’s the Way Love Goes.

* Lopez’s first big break came

in 1997, when she was chosen to play the lead role in Selena, a biopic of the Tejano pop singer Selena, and

earned her first best actress nomination in a major award show. She also featured in Anaconda alongside Ice Cube and Jon Voight and Out of Sight, an adaptation of the Elmore Leonard novel, which made her the first Latina actress to earn over US$1 million for a role. Lopez released her debut album On the 6 on June 1 1999, the name on the album a reference of the 6 subway line she used to take growing up in Castle Hill. The album featured a mix of R&B, hip-pop and a Spanish language, Latin-flavoured duet No Me Ames with Marc Anthony, who would later become her husband. Even though it was never officially released, it reached number one on the US Hot Latin Tracks chart.

* J.Lo was Lopez’s second

album released in January 2001, and it debuted at number one. In the same year, she also released The Wedding Planner, her first mainstream film that gained worldwide acclaim, and she became the first actresssinger to have a film and an album at number one in the same week.

* Due to the success of her

four released tracks from the album: Love Don’t Cost a Thing, Play, I’m Real and Ain’t it Funny, Jennifer Lopez asked Murder Inc. (now The Inc. Records) to remix the last two songs, which featured rap artists Ja Rule and Cadillac Tah. Many critics claimed that the remixed versions were better than the originals. She followed the remixes with a performance at the Let’s Get Loud Live In Puerto Rico concert.

* Following the success of the

remixes, Lopez decided to devote an entire album to the remixing effort, releasing J to tha L–O!: The Remixes, on February 5 2002. This album debuted at number one, becoming the first remix album in history to debut at the top of the chart, and to date is the fourth all-time best-selling remix album in history. Featured artists on the album were P.Diddy, Fat Joe and Nas.

* 2002 saw the release of her

third studio album This Is Me… Then. This only reached number two and featured Jenny from the Block and I’m Glad – the video for this track recreated scenes from the 1983 film Flashdance and lead to a lawsuit over copyright infringement, which was later dismissed.

* Jennifer Lopez is involved

in many other industries as well as the entertainment business. She launched her clothing line JLO by Jennifer Lopez in 2003, a new clothing line called Sweetface in 2005 and a new junior line called JustSweet in 2007. She opened a Cuban restaurant in Pasadena, California called Madre’s, her perfumes Glow by J.LO, Live by Jennifer Lopez, Live Luxe and My Glow are sell out, and she owns a film and television company Nuyorican Productions.

* After a year away from the

music scene, Lopez released her fourth studio album, Rebirth, on March 1 2005 and her first full Spanish-language album Como ama una Mujer in 2007, co-produced by her husband Marc Anthony.

* Lopez was awarded the

Women in Film Crystal Award, established in 1977 to honour outstanding women who, through their endurance and the excellence of their work, have helped to expand the role of women within the entertainment industry.

* She split from Sony Music En-

tertainment in February 2010 after 11 years, signed with Island Def Jam, and began working on her new album Love?

* In September 2010, Jennifer Lopez joined the judging panel on American Idol, alongside Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson, and she is set to join the cast of Glee.

* She is one of the highest-

paid actresses in Hollywood and the highest-paid Latin actress in Hollywood history; in 2007 her estimated wealth was calculated at approximately US$110 million.

* Throughout her time in the

media spotlight, Lopez’s personal life has attracted much attention. In the past she has dated hip-hop mogul Sean Combs, Cris Judd (one of her back-up dancers who she married and divorced within a year), Ben Affleck and, her now husband, Marc Anthony, with whom she has twins Emme Maribel Muniz and Maximillian David Muniz. Their marriage was very low key; guests were invited to an “afternoon party” at Lopez’s house, not aware that they were actually going to her wedding. How cute!

* Her new album Love? is out

now and well worth a listen!

It is unclear if this role reduction is the result of Schwarzenegger’s recent scandal. By Christie Holland

With a successful music career, beauty campaign and her own hairspray brand under her belt, Cheryl Cole’s next move was to conquer the States. However, the nation’s sweetheart has had her American dream vanish in front of her very eyes. After months of speculation as to whether Cheryl would be heading to Hollywood she was finally handed a golden ticket only to have it snatched away less than three weeks later! An array of reasons for Cole’s dismissal from the American X Factor’s judging panel have been circulating but it is believed her Geordie twang was the final reason for the cut. During the first two weeks of filming Cheryl continuously had to repeat herself as the American contestants struggled to understand her accent. A lack of chemistry between Cheryl and fellow judge Paula Abdul was also reported to be an issue, it is believed that Cheryl was not happy being demoted from her previous position as Simon Cowell’s number one girl. Abdul and Cowell have a very strong relationship having worked on American Idol for eight years together and although Cheryl was reported to have scored the seat next to Simon, pictures released from the filming of the first auditions showed Paula had taken her spot. It has since been confirmed that co-host Nicole Scherzinger will replace Miss Cole on the judges’ table. However, the real question to ask is what is next for Miss Cole? Having lost her place on the UK X Factor, news has reached us that she could be changing sides with a judging role on BBC’s rival show The Voice. Could this really be the end of Cheryl and Mr Cowell?

Ever since Nickelodeon star Selena Gomez and teen sensation Justin Bieber went public with their relationship teenage hearts everywhere have been broken. However, it appears some have taken it a step too far. Miss Gomez has had to up her security due to a series of death threats she received following the release of pictures of the couple cosying up on a recent trip to the Hawaii. 18-year-old Selena, who is one year older than Justin, has received bizarre abuse naming her a paedophile by Bieber fans who have taken to Twitter to vent their anger. One fan wrote, “I’m gonna kill ya in the night underneath your smell bed,” whilst another said, “Selena Gomez is dangerously close to a long, slow, painful death.” We all know teen lust can be powerful and Justin Bieber’s fans are renowned for being passionate and loyal to their hero. Still, Selena is standing by her man and has dedicated her new song, “Who Says,” to all the Bieber super fans exclaiming, “Basically, it’s to the haters, it’s to the people who try to bring you down.”

When something works, why change it? That’s the question millions of people across the world asked when it was announced that there was to be a complete overhaul on the judges table of American Idol this year. However, the risk seems to have paid off. Once Simon Cowell publicised that he was leaving the show it seemed like it had finally run its course, however, newbies Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler proved to be a breath of fresh air and just what was needed to give it a new lease of life. With season 10 bigger and better than ever, every Idol fan worldwide will be thrilled to hear it has been confirmed that Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson will all be back for season 11 next year. This announcement was released following the win by 17-year-old Scotty McCreery. The southern singer became the youngest contestant ever to take the idol crown and the fourth male in a row to win the coveted prize. Another record in Idol history was made this year with 122 million viewers tuning in for the final, bringing the season total to 730 million votes.

44 Men all over the world will have their hopes and dreams shattered when they hear the news that bodacious babe Kim Kardashian is no longer single. The American reality TV star and model has announced her engagement after a fairytale proposal from her basketball star boyfriend, Kris Humphries. The couple, who have been dating for six months, plan to marry this summer and Kim’s heart is set on a big, white wedding despite this being her second marriage. She was first married at age 19 to music producer Damon Thomas, although it ended four years later. Kim wants to stick with the traditional theme and plans to lose the name that has made her famous and take Humphries’ surname once she ties the knot. This decision goes against the wishes of her manager mum Kris Jenner who recently commented, “I don’t think she should take his name and be Kim Humphries. She needs to be Kim Kardashian because she’s worked so hard to get where she is.” If we can give you one piece of advice Kim, listen to your mother!

Popstar Pink, whose real name is Alecia Beth Moore, has given birth to her first child with husband Carey Hart. The star publicised the birth of Willow Sage Hart on Twitter following a series of cryptic tweets that fans later worked out came from the hospital during her labour. “New Moon in Gemini today :) a good time to start something new.... Also called the Honey Moon,” she posted. The couple are said to be delighted to welcome their beautiful, healthy baby girl into the world particularly as Pink recently revealed on The Ellen DeGeneres Show that she had previously suffered from a miscarriage. Congratulations to the happy couple!

The Emmys are sure to be full of cheer and glee this year as Jane Lynch has been confirmed as the official host. Hollywood had been whispering for a while that the straight talking, cheerleading coach had taken the top spot at this year’s celebration of all things television, but now the news is official! Following the announcement Lynch joked, “I am looking forward to singing, dancing and sporting my finest tracksuit.” The Emmy nominations are yet to be announced, but no doubt the infamous Sue Sylvester will be awarding her fellow Glee cast members with various awards, having snapped up two wins last year Glee is set to be the front runner of the evening. 2011 will mark the first time since 2005, when Ellen DeGeneres had the gig, that the show has had a solo female host.

Everything moves fast in celebville, only a month after parting ways with ex-fiancé Bryan McFadden, Australian singer Delta Goodrem has been sighted hand-in-hand with none other than 18-year-old Joe Jonas. The new couples were papped on a trip to the Arclight cinema in Los Angeles. The Jonas brothers famously wear purity rings to show their, “promise to God to stay pure until marriage.” Gossip went into overdrive when Joe was spotted without his ring, raising questions as to whether 26-year-old Delta who is eight years his senior had changed his beliefs. However, no need to panic yet, Joe is still wearing his purity ring, just on a chain around his neck!

Justin Timberlake groping Mila Kunis live on stage; Reese Witherspoon dropping the F-bomb and Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner locking lips! We wouldn’t expect anything less from the most risqué awards show on the planet! As predicted Eclipse cleaned up at the MTV Movie Awards taking home a total of five golden popcorn trophies including the top honour for Best Movie. Kick Ass actress Chloe Moritz snapped up Best Breakout Star and Biggest Baddass, beating I Am Number Four’s Alex Pettyfer and Iron Man’s, Robert Downey Jr. I can’t imagine it did much for their street credit being beaten by a girl, particularly a little 14-year-old girl! Blake Lively’s alleged nude photographs provided enough material for the guest presenters with Reese Witherspoon and Jason Sudekis to poke fun at the Gossip Girl. When introducing Lively, Sudekis announced that Ryan Reynolds would be joined by, “Someone that we believe is the real Blake Lively although she won’t confirm it.” Blake’s reps have denied the photographs are real, exclaiming that Blake Lively has never taken nude photographs and the ones released are fake. Blake herself had no comment and refused to answer any reporters’ questions at the event. Whether real or fake, the scandal provided great entertainment for the MTV audience!

99

Twilight star Nikki Reed has found her idol. Since meeting in March at the Little Red Riding Hood, premiere, Reed and American Idol contestant Paul McDonald embarked on a whirlwind romance and have now taken the next step by confirming their engagement. Showing off a huge sparkler at the MTV Awards in Los Angeles, Nikki confirmed that Paul is “the one”. When concerns were voiced as to whether they were rushing into marriage, Reed had an answer, “I love him and I don’t care.” Despite losing out on the live finals of American Idol, it seems McDonald has truly won the heart of his new fiancée.

77

In true Lindsey Lohan style, despite being unable to leave the house, drink alcohol or take off her new ankle accessory, the notorious party girl decided she wasn’t going to let any of that stop her enjoying herself. A gaggle of girls were spotted arriving at “Chez Lohan,” with sleepover bags in tow all set for a big slumber party! Sister Ali Lohan greeted the guests at the door and invited them in, in order to keep her older sister away from prying paparazzi eyes. The actress has been allowed to serve her sentence at home due to the home detentions plan to allow non-violent offenders to serve their time in their own residence, in an aim to reduce the prison population. Lohan received her sentence after stealing a US$2500 necklace from an upmarket boutique, which breached the terms of her 2007 DUI and suspected cocaine possession arrest.

THE BEAUTY BAROMETER Leading product ranges, treatments and news from the world of health and beauty

Because I’m Worth It Photos courtesy of Loreal

Every month our health and beauty expert, Nicola McGeorge spills the beans on the behind-the-scenes gossip and tricks of the trade There was once a little girl who

had beautiful, long, dark, brown hair, which hung down to her waist. In the summer months, she turned naturally blonde, with sun kissed hair that everyone envied. Fast forward 20 years and a bucket full of bleach, my hair is now thin and will not grow much past my shoulders.

I started highlighting my hair at 15. By the time I hit 20, it started to fall out and was so frazzled it looked like someone had set light to it. I remember one guy actually telling me my hair resembled straw. The problem wasn’t so much the colouring of my hair, but my choice of technicians who were applying it. Instead of just touching in the roots, they were taking the colour through the whole length of my hair, every five weeks. This made it weak and fragile, and before long it just snapped off. Therefore, I strongly recommend finding a colourist who truly cares about the condition of your hair. Upon arriving in Marbella, things got slightly worse before they got better.

28

I tried numerous hairdressers and believe it or not most of the time my roots looked worse than when I had arrived. Before I admit the next bit, you must understand I am slightly obsessed with my hair and get rather depressed when it isn‘t 100 percent perfect. Brace yourselves – I ended up spending the next two years flying back to London every six weeks to get my hair coloured and cut by the talented Natalia Lima, from Daniel Field. It did actually work out cheaper than having to pay for someone to fix whatever recent disaster someone in Marbella had created. Thankfully, I was finally introduced to celebrity colourist, Jonathan Yeadon, whose clients have included Victoria Beckham and Simon Cowell. I have to admit I was preparing myself for the worst, but when he had finished blow drying my hair, I looked up to find I had beautiful blonde locks without a root in sight. I think I frightened the

life out of him when I jumped up, threw my arms around him and told him I loved him. Do remember we had only met three hours ago. From then on Jonathan hasn’t been able to get rid of me – see he is not only a talented colourist (and cutter, though he declares otherwise), he is also a little ray of sunshine. An appointment with him is probably the most entertainment you will have all week. You can walk into the salon with the worries of the world on your shoulders and Jonathan will still have you crying with laughter within minutes. Hence the waiting list to see him! I really shouldn’t be writing this article, as it is bad enough trying to get an appointment with him as it is. After a year in the hands of this hair wizard, my hair grew thick, once again hung down to my waist. But, all good things must come to an end, I developed polycystic ovaries, (don’t ask,) and much to Jonathan’s distress, my hair fell out again. It got so bad that my partner told me I looked like Garth from Wayne’s World.

3 I am now taking MSM supplements, which have definitely helped. Under Jonathan’s instructions I am not allowed to go too blonde (sulk) and I use Kérastase Bain Satin shampoo (1) and Kérastase Masquintense Épais (2) (Stockist - Reflections Hair Nails & Skin Care. Tel: +34 902 325 324). Once a week I leave the mask in overnight. My other hair treats are Aussie’s

Colour Mate Leave-in Conditioner (3) and John Frieda’s Frizz-Ease (4). I only use Mason Pearson brushes (5).

To give the illusion of thicker hair I

opt for waves (think Cheryl Cole), rather than the poker straight style, I used to love. I prep with my beloved Elnett hair spray (6) and then leave Babyliss Heated Rollers (7) in for as long as possible. Once removed I separate with a little Frizz-Ease (4) on my fingers, destroy the ozone layer with a load more spray and then massage a little talc along my parting to add lift. The final effect? Well, let’s just say no one would know that my hair is really as limp as a wet rag, but I know the truth and still pine for my Goldilocks hair.

BEAUTY IN AN INSTANT Change your look today - with hair extensions I

f you’ve ever wondered how some of the world’s most glamorous stars manage to continually change their style – their secret to great looking hair is now revealed. A-listers including Jennifer Lopez, Christina Aguilera and Jennifer Aniston all wear hair extensions. Hair extensions specialist, Zoe Woods of Wood Salon is known for creating the most natural looking styles with undetectable results. “Whatever the current hair trends, extensions give you the versatility to transform your image and create the hairstyle of your dreams,” she says. “From fringes and texture to lengthening, volume and colour choice, creative styling with hair extensions has no bounds.”

WOOD SALON Tel: 952771791/ 645089399 woodhairdressing.com

The salon uses Great Lengths hair extensions, which are made from the world’s finest human hair, allowing you to style them as you would your own locks. “In the consultation we take into account the skin tone of our clients as the colour needs to complement this,” Zoe explains. “With hair extensions, you can add flashes of colour into your hair without the commitment of dyes and there is also the added benefit of being able to add a variety of blended and complementing shades.”

24-HOUR PERFECTION Wake up beautiful everyday with Semi-Permanent Make-up

I

f semi-permanent make-up conjures up images of Katie Price, then it might be time to think again. The new generation of stay-put make-up looks oh so natural. With nearly 30 years experience in Micropigmentation and facial corrections, Cosmoclinc & Isabelle’s aesthetic and beauty centre are the leading authority on the Coast. They use tattooing in subtle, life-enhancing ways: for cancer patients who’ve lost their eyebrows and lashes; to help those who cannot see to apply their make-up; for those who are allergic to most make-up, who want plumper lips, or anyone who simply wants to wake up every day with brighter, bigger-looking eyes without the bother of make-up. This treatment is also available for male clients, ranging from eyebrow recreation, lash enhancement, right through to scar correction, alopecia and vitiligo. Their before and after photos need to be seem to be believed. In absolute awe, I flicked through image after image of women who had been given their confidence back after being treated by this

32

talented team. Mastectomy patients were being made to feel feminine again with the most realistic looking areolas. Alopecia sufferers now sport such precise, natural eyebrows, that even Brooke Shields would be jealous of. Asymmetrical lips had been balanced, heavy upper eyelids looked lifted, old scars were faded. Isabelle’s are not just therapists they are artists. At the consultation you will receive a personalised colour analysis, with up to three therapists, that will take into account your individual skin undertones, hair and eye colour. This enables the team to custom blend the natural pigments that will be used to achieve the look you desire. Isabelle’s do not do ‘party looks,’ it’s all very natural and they only enhance or correct features, So how does it work? The micropigment is implanted through the epidermis into the dermis. Microscopic fragments of this pigment will stay in the skin indefinitely even if the colour is unseen to the naked eye. The technique is painless and all products that are F.D.A approved.

Wood Salon is an “elegant” hairdresser and will not create fake looks. “I can do edgy but even then it is tasteful. We had one client who opted for purple and orange. The secret is all about the cut. You cannot just put them in; you have to know how to cut them correctly.” Extensions are a fantastic option for getting past that dreaded “in between stage”. For example, if you are growing out a shorter style, a few extensions can give you an instant bob. Victoria Beckham is a great example of this, when she opted for an asymmetrical style while waiting for her hair to grow. “I will be honest with you, it does take maintenance. When you see images of celebrities with bald patches, it is because they have left their extensions in for too long. If you are not going to look after them properly I would rather not do it. By following the easy, but regular care programme and using the correct products, they can last up to four months.” What are you waiting for? You can gain the hair you’ve always dreamed of and feel beautiful in an instant.

Pigments placed into the skin by poorly skilled technicians who have not been educated in the science of colour, can produce unsightly results. This is why you have to make sure that you chose a reputable company. Isabelle’s reputation proceeds them and the vast majority of their work is correcting the work of others. Maintenance is recommend every year to 18 months in order to preserve the vivid and pure line and colour. So, if you want to wakeup with make up, then why not let Isabelle’s restore and enhance your natural beauty! For more information please contact Tel. +34 952 81 59 44

LEGS

Here are David’s tips to achieve legs and a bum like JLo

Exercise: Plié Toe Squats, four times weekly Works: calves, thighs and glutes How to do it: Stand with feet more than hip-width apart, toes turned slightly out, hands on hips. Squat, lifting heels off the floor as you do so. Hold for five seconds. Return to standing, keeping heels lifted, and then lower them back to the floor. Do 15. Where to focus: Focus energy on inner thighs and glutes.

BUTT Exercise: Crossover Lunges, four times weekly Works: glutes, hips and hamstrings How to do it: Start upright, feet shoulder-width distance apart, hands on hips. Start with right leg, step forward and cross over left leg, while bending at the knee. Return to start position. Repeat on the left. Do 15 on each side. Where to focus: Focus energy on putting your brain in your butt. **To get the right moves for your butt type, check out David Kirsch’s Butt Book, available at: davidkirschwellness.com

FULLY TONED BODY Exercise: 30–45 minutes of cardio every day Works: trims and tones all major muscles How to do it: Choose a form of cardio that helps you get your heart rate up—really up. I recommend running, rowing, swimming, cycling or elliptical trainer. Keep at it without stopping for 30 to 45 minutes. Where to focus: Focus energy on pushing the envelope. You should feel out of breath and your heart rate should be up. **To get a fully toned body, check out David Kirsch’s red-carpet workout DVDs, available at davidkirschwellness.com

ollywood Restaurant in Nueva Andalucia has to be the most popular Indian cuisine restaurants here in Marbella. It’s astounding to see the client base the owners have generated and built upon in the 8 months of trading. According to them, the failsafe way in keeping these loyal customers returning is to provide a good honest service, give the customers what they want, listen to any feedback and implement any changes. Often there are the times that you pop in to collect your takeaway and friends of yours are dining in the restaurant and being charmed by the staff. The owners and staff have a lifetime of experience in the restaurant business and have the passion and vision needed to succeed. Their Indian chef alone has 15 years of hands on experience in 5* hotels in India. This evidences in their extensive menu, which boasts authentic recipes, Indian dishes and curries. Their signature dishes include a goan curry with fish and prawn, kadai and classic bhunas. The restaurant offers great quality food at extremely reasonable prices. With future plans to expand in new and innovative ways, the Bollywood success story is set to grow and grow. The guys are naturally reluctant to say what exactly so we suggest you go there for a quality dining experience and ask them yourselves. ven with the increase in the cases of houses being auctioned off over unpaid mortgages, not to mention the toughness that this situation brings; it is still common that the amount obtained by the bank does not cover the amount owed. Of course this is not taking into account cases where the banks have overvalued the property at the time of purchase, which result in virtually no cases of foreclosure and the debtor can often be relieved of the entire debt.

Without wanting to be too detailed, there are two standard principles, alongside additional rules dependent on the debtor’s home country regulations. Regulation (CE) no 44/2001, 22nd December 2000 on jurisdiction, recognition and enforcement of civil and commercial judgements, and Regulation (CE) no 1896/2006 of the European Parliament and Council of 12th December 2006, establish the European Monitoring System and are both practiced regularly.

This situation is compounded by the fact that unlike other countries; where the auction of the mortgaged property, whatever the result, means you are granted exemption from paying the remainder of the debt, is not the same as the regulations in Spain. In Spain any excess not covered by the sale of the property is still required to be paid, and the option of payment in kind is neither a legal method nor solution used without exceptional circumstances.

The creditor has two procedural possibilities, to start a procedure here and have the sentence obtained before the Spanish tribunals, executing it in Spain, or to initiate proceedings in the country where the debtor is domiciled, for example through a method that opens the European Monitoring System.

Not only for this cause, but also with respect to other debtors in similar pending situations (community fees, bills, taxes, etc.), there exists the possibility that the total of your debt could be reclaimed or pursued against property of rights of whomever is titled as the debtor even in your home country. That is to say that the document is recognised as valid debt to any public (Judgement/Deed).

Our advice from Lexland Abogados is that you are assessed by the qualified professionals which we have at our disposition and allow us to make an agreement with you where we can renegotiate your debt, as is the practice of current markets due to the high default rates involved. This gives us the opportunity for you to receive a reduction in the amount claimed, potentially waiving the interest generated, or dividing the debt.

Mixing and blending styles has become a strong trend for 2011. Think of your furnishings as an eclectic fusion combining a contrast of the contemporary with the traditional. Simple textures and colours tie together the elements to create harmony within the design. B&B Italia creations achieve this look effortlessly

The sofa from the FRANK COLLECTION by B&B Italia is a combination of simple shapes, generous proportions and is finished with varnished nickel or bright brushed aluminum supports

68

The LAZY NIGHT bed from the LAZY COLLECTION obtains its unique character from the prominent headboard. The new bed, designed by Patricia Urquiola, has been produced in double and single versions. The double

version consists of two independent elements, softened by cushions and supported by an elastic strap. This strong structure is combined perfectly with the soft shades of fabric or leather upholstery.

EASY LIVING

Whilst maintaining the features of the iconic MAXALTO canopy bed, the new ALCOVA AC COLLECTION bed is smaller in size with the headboard and mattress higher than the original. The easily-removable covers are finished with delicate needlework in natural grey, brown, black oak or wedge. The MAXALTO collection effortlessly revisits classic themes.

ERACLE is a simple, defined design that results in a sophisticated storage unit. An array of different sizes is available fitted with doors, shelves and drawers or left as open bookcases. The startling red lacquer interior provides a unique fashionable edge.

The LUTETIA VESTIS SIMPLICE COLLECTION is dedicated to those who have an eye for a classical masterpiece. The Sofa Lutetia is available in two lengths and depths, tailored details add the hint of character whilst the blanket stitch adds a defining touch in the same colour as the upholstery. A classic concept with a modern feel.

The spectacular, semi-circle shape of CRONO SIMPLICE sofa adds a special touch to this unique piece whilst the simplistic fabric and finish allows it to perfectly blend to any colour palette.

The FEBO APTA COLLECTION introduces its new, graceful chaise longue, which offers comfort and features individual material pieces as well as prominent stitching.

69

EASY LIVING

The SELENE bed from the MAX ALTO SELENE APTA COLLECTION features a high, upholstered headboard, the cover is completely removable and the base is available in four different widths. The feet are available in polished chrome, nickel or bronze or with a solid wood veneer.

The FEBO sofa collection features a variety of sofas with distinctive characteristics and traditional single material upholstery. A large, wrapped backrest and no armrests differentiate this piece. The sofa is available in two sizes and two armchairs complete the collection.

The low table from the MAX ALTO LOTO SIMPLICE COLLECTION provides not only a versatile and functional table but also an exquisite, aesthetically pleasing vision. The strong, round shape is softened by the curved, solid, oak edge, which can be finished in black oak, grey or brown oak.

70

The TUFTY-TOO has a linear appearance without forgetting comfort, softness and innovation. The cover can consist of matching tones or contrasting stitching, with the latter providing a decorative motif.

ALOHA GOLF Aloha Golf Club played host to the 9th Niños Mariposa golf and dinner fund raising event last month. Francisco Soler and Rosmarie Bromdner won the overall event, but the real winners were the Butterfly children, who, thanks to the €80,000 raised, will be able to continue receiving support from the Debra Spain nurses. After the tournament, DEBRA Spain celebrated their well-known dinner on the Aloha Golf club terrace. There were three live-music shows including the belly dancing group Al-Kamra – which left everyone in awe of their choreography – the singer Mel Williams and the band “Shameless”. During dinner, the raffle and auction were a great success with people bidding for prizes such as a sketch of Severiano Ballesteros drawn by Harold Riley, a driver of Miguel Ángel Jimenez, a Barcelona football shirt signed by the players, three limited edition prints of the Loch Lomond Golf Club and a book of the VOLVO World Match Play Championship signed by all the players.

FUNDRAISING FISCHER CAR GROUP Fischer Car Group hosted its annual charity golf tournament at the beautiful Los Flamingos Golf Club at Hotel Villa Padierna. 80 players participated to support the charity work from Walter Fischer and his team. To participate in this tournament every player was charged €95, € 50 of which was donated to organisations supported. These were the Deutsche Nachbarschaftshilfe, which supports German speaking, elderly residents on the coast, who are in need and who don’t have any local family support. Furthermore the Concordia Antiaids organisation, which has been working for many years on the coast looking after Aids patients and their families on the Costa del Sol. Fernando Frühbeck, a lawyer from Marbella and chairman of the Deutsche Nachbarschaftshile, wanted to actively support the event, although he does not play golf. For the full participation fee, he was given the opportunity to hit 10 balls at the hole-in-one to try and win the prize sponsored by Fischer Car Group, a new Mercedes SLK – unfortunately without any success! In the idyllic garden of the Hotel Villa Padierna the trophies were given to the winners of the different categories. Overall winner of the tournament Jarmo Tähtinen from Finland won with 33 points followed by only 18-year-old Haiko Dana with 31 points. The real winners of the tournament, however, were the Dt. Nachbarschaftshilfe represented by Fernando Frühbeck and Peter Hubert as well as the Concordia Anti Aids organisation, represented by Rosy von Johnston. Walter Fischer was delighted at the end of the day to handover the total amount of €4,050.

DRIVE ON!

Motoring author, racing driver and photo-journalist Ian Kuah reports on the Platinum Motorsport MurciĂŠlago

D

riving towards Beverley Hills, the landscape and the tone of the neighbourhood changes visibly as you move from a wealthy to a seriously wealthy one. This shows in many ways, some subtle, others far less so.

Along the generously wide avenues off Sunset Boulevard, the residences become larger, the distances between each more generous, and their larger lawns are better manicured. It is no surprise that the entry-level price tag for a house in one of these leafy streets is in the USD$10 million region. The cars in their driveways are also more expensive, and everyday cars like the Mercedes E-Classes seen in front of the houses a few miles down the road give way to S-Classes here.

97

DRIVE ON!

And it is not just new cars on show here either. I first clocked a gorgeous silver 1960 Ferrari 250GT SWB going the other way, and then a mile down the road, a yellow Lamborghini Murciélago Roadster posing outside a swish looking street café. When I drove past again two hours later, a similar car in white, and a silver Porsche Carrera GT had joined this sidewalk supercar show. The sight of these Italian exotica certainly set the tone for my day, as I had a date with a very special Lamborghini Murciélago; one that would certainly make the heart of any car enthusiast beat a whole lot faster. Beverly Hills, Hollywood, Malibu and surrounding areas as far out as Pasadena, are the residential Mecca for movie, TV and sports personalities, and those who made their big money in commerce and the professions. Halfway down nearby Sunset Boulevard, Platinum Motorsport’s premises are pretty prominent so you won’t miss them. And they have another showroom in nearby Melrose Avenue for good measure. Founded in 1997 by brothers George and Jack Keshishyan, this high-end automotive boutique quickly made a name for itself, supplying exclusive cars to the rich and famous in LA and beyond. Today, this thriving business has become the realisation of theirs

98

and many customers’ dreams, and the roll call of big names on their client list is a long one that stretches as far as the Middle East. “We started off in ’97 with the idea of a one-stop company for wealthy car enthusiasts; a place they could come to realise their personal automotive vision,” Jack explained. “While there are some really good companies here in LA that customise American cars, we set out to offer a bespoke automotive haute couture service for high-end European cars from Mercedes to Rolls-Royce,” he added. Along the way, Platinum branched out into high-end car rental as well, while their collision repair centre specialises in returning high-end and exotic cars to pristine condition should their owners make an error of judgement on the road. Repairing such cars to as new condition requires a very high level of expertise. Most of these skills are also pertinent to the perfect marriage of a standard factory car with the aftermarket body styling additions that are part and parcel of Platinum’s customisation programme. “The Bentley GT in both coupe and GTC form is a very popular car with our clients,” Jack explained. “While we have built many of these cars, I am proud to say that no two are

DRIVE ON!

ever alike. We know that the thing wealthy people hate the most is seeing another car exactly the same as theirs, especially in this relatively small community. So we ensure that if we build two white wide-body GTs, the interior trim or wheel design is always different.”

However, you only have to look at Jack’s own Lamborghini Murciélago to see that the man himself has relatively subtle taste. As I walk around the car, my interest piques as I clock the changes that Jack has wrought to this spectacular member of the supercar royal family.

Reaching a decision on the final specification for a car can be either a quick or a long drawn out process depending on the client. “Sometimes a client knows exactly what he or she wants and all we have to do is sign off paint and trim samples,” said Jack. “The reverse is also true with clients who want something really unique but do not actually have a concept in mind. Then we have to show them photographs of past work, and run through the possibilities,” he added. “That is why I like to sit down with a new client over a drink to try and establish what they are after,” he explained. “While this helps me point them in the right direction, I have to be careful that the end is result is what they really want, and not what I think they should have!”

The custom work starts with the military grey matt paintwork, the exact same shade made famous by Lamborghini’s Reventon. Platinum’s new carbon-fibre front section gives the top Lambo an even more aggressive visage that certainly matches that of its Reventon cousin.

Looking at the photo gallery on the Platinum Motorsport website, you could easily reach the conclusion that they only build “bling” machinery, as even the most stately car, a white Rolls-Royce Phantom, has chromed 24-inch wheels.

The lower part of this new front is left in lacquered carbonfibre, as are the huge air intakes in front of the rear wheel arches, and the all-new rear section with its race style underbody diffuser. Similar to the one on the LP670-4 SuperVeloce, this new rear is topped off by a ducktail central spoiler that looks a lot less pretentious than the racecar wing of the factory SuperVeloce Aeropack. I have seen some pretty shoddy work on modified exotics, even in Germany, but I am happy to say that the paintwork, fit and finish of the Platinum Motorsport Murciélago, and indeed of all the other cars in their shop, was a treat for perfectionist detail freaks like me.

99

DRIVE ON!

The alloy wheels are Platinum Motorsport’s own design, and are 8.5J x 19 and 12J x 19-inch diameter, shod with 235/35ZR19 and 345/25ZR19 Pirelli PZero Nero rubber. “I specified the offsets of these wheels in such a way that the fronts appear fairly flush, but the rears have a really deep dished look. This increases their visual contrast for maximum effect,” Jack said. Based on an original Murciélago with the 6.2 litre engine, the car received a power boost from bespoke ECU software upgrade that alters the valve timing, ignition and fuelling. The 60bhp increase enables the Platinum car to match the output of the 6.5 litre LP640. I have seen some pretty extrovert interiors in customised Lamborghinis over the years, so the interior of Jack’s car came like a breath of fresh air. “I used my favourite materials here; leather and Alcantara. But I thought long and hard over how I could make a pattern on the leather that would be subtle and yet really stand out,” he revealed. The Alcantara with contrasting white stitching on the sills, central tunnel and armrest was the easy part. Much harder to achieve was the piece de resistance of the design, the patterned row of white dots that adorns the leather part of the seats and carpet mats, as well as the Alcantara on the central armrest. “My trimmer punched the pattern of holes in the black leather and then placed a very thin layer of white leather underneath,” explained Jack. “The end result is very effective, and always has people scratching their heads over how we achieved this look.”

100

DRIVE ON!

Far less obvious at a glance is the audiophile sound system that matches the exclusive level of this car. The most obvious sign of hardware is in the front luggage bay where the trademark shiny black McIntosh power amplifier with its blue illuminated power metres and gold lettering takes centre stage. Back in the cabin, the head unit has a big screen with sat-nav function, while the pre-amp and other electronics are carefully concealed. The speaker system is simple but effective, and consists of mid-range speakers and tweeters beautifully integrated into the doors, underpinned by a 15-inch JL sub-woofer in a flush fitting cabinet built into the bulkhead behind the passenger seat. As impressive as this exotic audio system is, the deep bellow of the V12 motor provides the real soundtrack for this car. It also confirmed my long-held feeling that the V12-engined Lamborghinis deliver a sense of occasion that their V10-engined siblings can simply never match. As we merged with the traffic on Sunset, heading east, the Lambo felt like a caged animal waiting to be let off its leash. The brutal punch of its fat torque curve is the forte of this motor, and it responds to the smallest throttle opening with an urgency that belies the car’s 1,700kg weight. As this is an original MurciÊlago with a manual gearbox, it would be purgatory to get stuck in rush hour LA traffic. Luckily the traffic is relatively thin this Saturday afternoon, and we are heading out of town.

101

DRIVE ON!

On the open road now, and with its vital fluids fully warmed through, the Murciélago delivers its knockout punch with gusto. This is a big, wide car, but American roads are wider, and where you have to be circumspect on smaller European roads, the big Lambo is in its element here. The structural rigidity conferred by the space frame chassis is still impressive all these years on, and the firm suspension easily coped with the bumps and lumps on the tarmac. Even on the eve of its replacement, the Murciélago is still a mighty force to be reckoned with. The only real threat in this environment is the California Highway Patrol, who seem to think that cars like this are speeding even when they are standing still! I am not a big fan of modified Lamborghinis only because I have seen so many badly executed ones before. But I really took to the Platinum Motorsport Murciélago because it is as dramatic yet subtle as such a car can ever be, and the quality of workmanship is absolutely top notch. It is the perfect advertisement for what this family run enthusiasts’ company can do.

COSTA CUISINE

Words by LauraJane Bruce Photos by Ruth Jones

Living here on the Costa del Sol, we are blessed with some of the finest eateries in the world, giving us the luxury of being able to choose from an amazing range of delicacies and cuisines. Each month, Society Marbella reviews a great selection of the coast’s restaurants to keep you up to speed with the best places to wine and dine

LA CASITA After opening the kitchens of Aretusa, Caruso and Liquid Lounge here on the Coast, followed by the running of a commercial restaurant group, owner Lawrence Otterburn felt inspired to open La Casita. This natural progression of owning his own restaurant and his past experience means that his passion and drive for excellence is paramount. He has actually been cooking and working in kitchens since he was 14 years old! It’s safe to say that the restaurant industry is flowing through his blood; if you ever have the pleasure of meeting him and his wife Sasha (they’re both very hands on with the restaurant so you are bound to sooner or later), this is clearly evident.

T

he stunning beauty and elegance of La Casita is what instantly blows you away as you first set eyes on this perfectly presented restaurant. Nestled in the foothills of the quaint village of La Heredia, it’s a world away from the hustle and bustle of Marbella and Puerto Banus, easily mistaken for a boutique eatery in the South of France. Its picturesque location sets it apart from the rest. Don’t be fooled by the steep drive up to La Casita; what seems like a world away from the beach is in fact only 10 minutes drive down to the Coast. But the ambience of the restaurant removes you from your everyday troubles and encour106 ages you to relax.

The cuisine served in La Casita is a mix of modern classic dishes and hearty, feel-good food, making the restaurant a welcome change to the array of traditional Italian, Oriental and Spanish restaurants we have on offer elsewhere on the Coast. What makes dining at La Casita so pleasurable is the defining clarity of tastes and ingredients. Their new menu is an extension of the newly refurbished restaurant, with an array of new textures, ideas and techniques. However, the La Casita that established itself 5 years ago still shines through in the ambience and is reinforced by the return of dedicated diners time and time again.

Lawrence’s initial passion to open La Casita was to add character to the village of La Heredia. It’s such a beautiful community but was fairly unknown to many locals in the Marbella area, until now. We dined on a Sunday night, our table was booked for 8pm, and within 30 minutes of being seated, the majority of tables were filled, so booking ahead is recommended. La Casita offer a wealth of dining options, from the main restaurant, to the beautiful natural terrace or the private dining area, which has the ability to be shut off the rest of the restaurant (and the world), and is perfect for hiring for birthdays and celebrations. Another welcome factor that struck my fellow diners and I was the fantastic value for money that La Casita offers. The restaurant

and kitchen are spotless, the staff are inviting and couldn’t have been more helpful and the dishes are elegantly presented and fantastically priced. They make modern classic dishes into fine dining standards. Swedish born Head Chef Andreas has an abundance of knowledge and experience that he brings to every service. From the age of 17, he has travelled all over the world working for some of the best chefs in Stockholm, Paris and now Marbella. Andreas fully admits that cooking is not particularly his necessary art. The fact that he has worked hard to get where he is today, having been a Sous chef in a fine dining restaurant, a pastry chef and a kitchen manager in Puerto Banus, means that every dish sent out of the kitchen is produced with passion and a pursuit for perfection. You can actually see Andreas and the other chefs hard at work, with their open kitchen and live kitchen cams. This inventive and refreshing addition to the restaurant was designed by Lawrence as a way to help the chefs maintain discipline and to give the clients a visual effect to what goes on in the kitchen at a busy service. We were greeted pleasantly by the waiting staff, who served us our menus and a green olive tapenade with crusty bread to share. As we browsed the menu and the specials of the day, it became instantly apparent that this was going to be one restaurant review that we were going to thoroughly enjoy. Due to the vast selection of starters on the menu, we dined on three dishes chosen for us. Firstly a Mixed Dim Sum, which consisted of cod and prawn gyozas, crisp pork belly and roast pumpkin gow gee and can be served up for one or two diners, depending if you want to share or not. Next was green asparagus served with lobster hollandaise sauce and accompanied by poached quail eggs, brioche croutons and dill caviar (the all round favourite). Finally, the La Casita home cured duck breast served with manchego cheese, peanut brittle and a chupito of beetroot gazpacho. Being

cured in-house only adds to the ‘home grown’ and personal feel. Three mains were chosen next; two fish dishes and one meat. The traditional ‘fish and chips’ dish had an interesting twist, with a salt and vinegar dip (perfect for the chunky chips) and the minted mushy peas were presented in a novelty tin can. Secondly an oriental inspired dish; char grilled white tuna, rocket and roast pepper maki with an accompanying nam jim dip. This was delightfully light and so delicious. Finally the crisp boneless suckling pig simply fell apart, succulent and served with a swiss chard and bacon parcel with potato and black pudding dumplings. The rustic wholesome meat dish was perfectly balanced by the slight bitterness of the beet bundle. To complete what was turning into a thoroughly impressive gastronomic encounter, we chose a raspberry and pistachio tart, beautifully fresh and fruity. The air-dried strawberry and elderflower cheesecake was an eclectic mix of subtle flavours and the perfect balance of textures. Our final choice from the desert menu was their latest addition; a decadent iced golden chocolate bonbon, which really rounded the meal off with its rich and plentiful dark chocolate sauce. Nowhere has the saying and tagline for La Casita ‘mi casa es tu casa’ been more apt; as you really do feel like you’re at a home from home, with the addition of exceptionally cooked food. Lawrence has such a close affinity with his clients, old and new alike, that you feel like you’ve just eaten a Sunday roast at the parents. We left the restaurant knowing that it certainly wouldn’t be too long before we were back eating there again. La Casita is about real food - no taste tricks or culinary buffoonery. SMALL WORLD BIG IMPACT Prepare to be impressed by, well, everything!

Small World Café offers everything from

scrumptious cocktails, whether muddled, shaken or stirred, to a range of specially selected wines and a mouth-watering menu. With dishes to please every palette at ridiculously reasonable prices Small World Café is not one to be ignored. The website describes the interior as “an unpretentious, industrial-chic deco with a nostalgic New York loft vibe” and honestly I couldn’t have put it better myself. The beautifully unique, original artwork by Vega that hangs on every wall is made to create an inspiring ambiance and set the scene for a laid back evening filled with exceptional food and drink.

We were joined by two of the four owners, Leo Vega and John Small, and they could not have been more hospitable. Enthusiastic is an understatement for how these guys feel about their freshly sourced produce and the dishes they create. Leo demon-

108

strated the taste sensation of a new accompaniment – olive tapenade and basil leaf tempura – with what I can only describe as a Bruce Lee-sequel karate chop which, as I’m sure you can imagine, was very funny after a Mojito or three! Small World’s varied menu is designed around seasonally available local produce, an idea that seems to be proving popular as it was busier than I would have expected for a Thursday night in mid-June. This is not just down to high-quality food but also down to serious value for money. As Leo explained, by keeping prices down the owners can be sure there is enough daily custom to ensure they use all of the food bought each day so that only the freshest ingredients are used in each dish. When the new summer menu is revealed next month we can expect to see plenty of fresh squid, mango and lime. The specials menu is changed daily, including a “drink of the day” which in this instance was a

delicious “Fresh Mint Iced Tea”. After glancing over the menu my fellow guests and I decided we wanted, well, everything. Fortunately our hosts knew the menu inside out and back-to-front as they played a key role in developing all of the dishes on offer and, after deciding to share five starters including both of the day’s specials; they selected a wine named “Chocolate Block” which they were eager for us to try. As it turned out, there was a very good reason for their enthusiasm and, despite not being a great lover of red wine myself, I found the Chocolate Block to be smooth and moreish. For our starters there were the juicy “Skewers of Honey and Chilli Marinated Tiger Prawns”, which were bursting with flavour. The homemade “Hummus and Guacamole with Curried Tortilla Chips” left me wanting more after they landed at the other end of the table, but the “Marinated Barbeque Chicken Wings” served with “Dips of Blue Cheese, Sweet Spicy Chilli and Louisiana Hot Sauce” were good enough to put up a fight for.

The first of our specials was an impossibly light “Quiche of Goat’s Cheese, Gorgonzola and Toasted Pine Nuts”, which was beautifully complemented by a small green salad with an “Apple and Balsamic Reduction”. Last but not least, an inspired combination of flavours in the form of the “Salad of Smoked Salmon, Steamed Asparagus, Avocado, Rocket, Crumbled Goat Cheese, Cashew Nuts, Sour Cream with a Lemon and Mustard Dressing” finished off our selection of starters. Our main courses were brought to the table one by one after being photographed and when the “Seared Tuna Steak Marinated in Wasabi and Soy Sauce” was placed across from me my eyes turned green with envy; it looked delicious. Fortunately my “Grilled Argentinean Beef Fillet with Melted Tarragon Butter, Oven Roasted Cherry Tomatoes, Baked Baby New Potatoes and a Rocket and Parmesan Salad” was next. As a huge steak fan – when my boyfriend asked if I would choose steak over him I lingered for perhaps a little too long – you can imagine my delight when I saw that the plate in front of me held not one but two perfectly cooked fillets of the finest Argentinean beef. The meat was out of this world and the accompaniments were cooked to perfection and complemented the steak brilliantly. By this point I was beginning to wonder why anyone would serve portions this generous for the scandalously low price of €18.50, but the answer is, of course, that only produce delivered the same day can be used. The owners would rather serve you generous portions than have fresh food go to waste. Next was a vegetarian dish good enough to tempt any carnivore, the “Roasted Cajun Pumpkin Tower with Pan-Fried Goat Cheese, Sautéed Spinach, Poached Egg, Balsamic

Glacé, Basil Pesto and Truffle Oil”, which was a steal at just €12.50. The mains of the day featured “Crispy Skin Sea Bass Served with Polenta Chips” and “Grilled Argentinean Rib Eye Topped with Caper Butter and served with Pan-Fried Taleggio Cheese, Chunky Chips, Sautéed Mushrooms and Spinach”, both insanely priced at just €13 and €13.50. Now the Rib Eye was under heavy guard but I managed to sneak a polenta chip. That chip was so unbelievably tasty that my food envy reared its ugly head again for a moment, however, as the wine and cocktails had been flowing the conversation turned a little less professional when Leo introduced us all to not just a new word but a whole new way of thinking (manscaping!?). After that revelation we ordered dessert but as it was nearing 1am we decided to give the chef a break and chose just one pud, the homemade “Brownie with Hot Chocolate Fudge and Vanilla Ice Cream”. There could have been no better way to round off the meal; the brownie was warm and oozy, drowned in velvety sauce and accompanied by a rich vanilla ice cream – I barely contained the urge to scoff it all myself! So after having to unbutton my skirt, I strolled out of Small World Café feeling extremely satisfied. I cannot think of a single complaint, the food, drink, service and company were all exceptional and I guarantee you will feel the same after your first visit. Personally, I couldn’t stay away! My second visit for drinks with the girls two days later was, of course, just as good and while I persuaded the lovely bar man to cut me just a slither of Carrot Cake I could have happily devoured the whole thing! latest news from the coast

giving back

celebrate their Civil Partnership

When you pick up your copy of SOCIETY MARBELLA each month have you ever wondered how it gets to you?

history – breakthroughs that have helped save thousands of children’s lives and changed many more.

Working alongside our editorial team and printers we have a small distribution team who work like mad to make sure you get the latest edition as soon as it is printed. Every month our team drive up and down the coast battling against traffic, pedestrians jumping out in front of them and holidaymakers who think our distributors are tour guides and have plenty of time to chat and give directions. They are always trying to find that elusive parking space – not always easy when the police and traffic wardens are watching their every move.

Debbie told us “In 2007, I joined Action Medical Research with the intention of walking the Inca Trail the same year. However, life, time and money all conspired against me until now, and I really can’t believe that I am finally going. I have a couple of small goals to reach along my way. For those of you that know me well, you will know I don’t like flying, having never been further than the Canary Islands, so a flight from Madrid to Lima is a big step. I will be 50 in 2012, although I hate to admit it. So, the saying “Fair, fat and fortyish” fits me well. I am going to start a get fit programme in the next few weeks with the aim of losing at least a stone in weight before I go. Going on the trek means a lot to me; it will be a fantastic personal achievement and at the same time raise money for a brilliant cause. I have never been particularly adventurous but I think that everyone should do something amazing once in their lifetime and this will be my big adventure. I will be joining a group of other trekkers at Barajas in Madrid, many of them, like me, will be travelling alone away from friends and family. It will be great fun to meet other like-minded people and I am looking forward to having a fantastic time.” So, SOCIETY MARBELLA readers please go online and get those credit cards at the ready. All donations are much appreciated now matter how small. action.org.uk/sponsor/deborahjnorman jesselliotperrodeagua.com

One of our distribution team is soon to travel to Peru to walk the famous Inca Trail in aid of charity, and is appealing through SOCIETY MARBELLA for sponsors. On September 8 Debbie will be joining her fellow travellers in Madrid for the 13-hour flight to Lima. The charity she has chosen is Action Medical Research (action.org.uk). The charity was founded in 1952 by Duncan Guthrie in his quest to find a cure for polio, a condition that blighted the lives of many thousands of children including his own daughter, Janet. Early research funded by the charity contributed to the development and rapid adoption of the first oral polio vaccine, which eradicated new cases of the disease in the UK. Since then the charity has developed an extraordinary track record in supporting some of the most significant medical breakthroughs in recent
