ith October marking Breast Cancer Awareness Month we knew it was important to do our bit and help raise awareness for this deserving charity. As the leaves turn from green to red, yellow and brown, Society Marbella goes pink with an array of local businesses on hand to help provide advice from breast reconstruction to breast screening. Look out for our Breast Cancer Special logo throughout the magazine for information, guidance, facts and figures concerning this devastating disease. As Society Marbella is now the only lifestyle magazine on the coast to cater for local fashion we decided to take things to the next level and visit luxurious design house Roche Bobois to shoot our October fashion feature. Combining fashion with interior design proved to be a visionary concept that truly showcased Luxury Living.

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT This month we turn the spotlight on the iconic symbol, Lady Gaga.

Lady Gaga Everything you ever needed to know about this controversial performer

W

here to start? Three years ago, Lady Gaga was virtually a nobody, but fast forward to October 2011 and she is one of the most recognizable, talked about and in demand artists of all time. Following her recent performance as alter ego Jo Calderone at the MTV Video Music Awards, her name is on everyone’s lips, so SOCIETY MARBELLA thought it was definitely time we spotlighted what can only be described as the fascinatingly weird wonder that is Lady Gaga.

Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta American singer/ songwriter Born March 28, 1986 From New York City, USA

* Lady Gaga is of Italian and French-Canadian ancestry. Daughter of an internet entrepreneur, she has one sister, Natali, and was raised as a Roman Catholic. She attended the Convent of the Sacred Heart, a private all-girls school on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, but still claims she originated from a lower-class family, as both her parents worked ‘eight till eight’ jobs throughout her education. * Her musical roots stem from her fourth birthday, when she began to learn to play the piano, and by aged thirteen, she had written her first piano ballad. When her time at the convent came

where a talent scout for music producer Rob Fusari was searching for a singer to front a new band. * It was actually Fusari who came up with the name Lady Gaga, as he likened her vocal harmonics to those of Freddie Mercury, and whenever she would enter the room, he would sing Queen’s Radio Ga Ga. One day, when texting her, his predictive text somehow changed ‘Radio’ to ‘Lady’, and therefore created her pseudonym Lady Gaga. * Their relationship was somewhat short-lived, she was dropped from her record label, and moved back

ing already served as an apprentice songwriter under an internship at Famous Music Publishing, which was later acquired by Sony, she subsequently struck a music publishing deal. * As a result of this signing, she was asked to write songs for Britney Spears, Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas and the Pussycat Dolls. It was during this time that singersongwriter and fellow label mate Akon recognised her vocal abilities, and convinced Interscope to form a joint deal with his own label Kon Live Distribution. He later introduced her to songwriter and producer RedOne, whom she still collaborates with today.

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT ran for over one and a half years and grossed $227.4 million, making it one of the highest-grossing concert tours of all time and the highest grossing for a debut headlining artist. * Born This Way is Gaga’s second studio album, and sold 1,108 million copies in the first week of its release. It is more rock inspired than her first album, and is influenced by the likes of David Bowie and Cyndi Lauper. * She has won a total of 123 awards, including Grammys’ for Album of the Year for The

* By 2008, Gaga had relocated to Los Angeles, where she continued to work on her debut album with RedOne, which was released on August 19. To this day, it has sold over fourteen million copies worldwide. Although her first concert tour served as an opening act for fellow label pop group, the reformed New Kids on the Block, she ultimately embarked on her own worldwide concert tour, The Fame Ball Tour, which began in March 2009; ending in September of that year.

to an end, she was awarded an early admission into New York University. However, by the second semester of her second year, she withdrew to focus on her musical career. * Aged 19, she rented a small apartment on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, and recorded a selection of songs with hip-hop singer Grandmaster Melle Mel for an audio book accompanying a children’s hardback. She also formed a band called the Stefani Germanotta Band with some friends from NYU, which caught the eye of music producer Joe Vulpis. The band performed at the 2006 Songwriter Hall of Fame,

home. It was around this time that she began moulding her on-stage persona. She became fascinated with neoburlesque shows, and began dancing in bars, experimenting with alcohol and drugs, and later met performance artist Lady Starlight, whom she would later tour with as Lady Gaga and the Starlight Revue. * Whilst Gaga was touring the underground clubs, Fusari continued to work on the songs he has created with her and sent them to a friend Vincent Herbert, who quickly signed her to his label Streamline Records, an imprint of Interscope. * The Fame Monster, a collection of eight songs, was released in November 2009, as an extension to her first album. Each song, dealing with the darker side of fame gained from personal experience while she traveled the world, is expressed through a monster metaphor. The three singles released from this darker album, Bad Romance, Telephone and Alejandro, all received critical acclaim from her critics, however, the latter single was attacked by the Catholic League for her alleged use of blasphemy. Despite the controversy surrounding her music videos, Gaga became the first artist to gain over one billion viral views on YouTube. * Her second worldwide concert ‘The Monster Ball Tour’

Fame and Best Pop Vocal Album for The Fame Monster, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, a Brit for Female Solo Artist, a VMA for Best Choreography for the single Bad Romance and an NME award for Hero of the Year. * Gaga has identified fashion as a major influence, not only with regards to her music, but also her life. She considers Donatella Versace her muse. She has her own creative production team called the Haus of Gaga, which she handles personally. The team creates many of her clothes, stage props, and hairdos. She is also in talks to create a clothing line with her younger sister Natali in the near future.

Society Marbella brings you all the gossip and glamour straight from Hollywood By Christie Holland

It is always a challenge for Disney stars to branch out of the teen world and into Hollywood but High School Musical alumni Vanessa Hudgens isn’t letting anything get in her way. Following the success of Beastly, Hudgens has cemented her status as a true starlet and signed up for Nicholas Cage and John Cusack’s new thriller, The Frozen Ground, she will portray a 17-year-old escapee, who manages to avoid being murdered by an elusive serial killer. Based on a true story, Cusack will play Robert Hansen, the serial killer, while Cage will take on the role as a police officer set on catching the criminal.

ONE TO WATCH!

Each month Society Marbella shares a secret with you. It may be the freshest music artist, an exciting new designer or the next A-list actress, but whoever it is you know they are one to watch. This month, Society Marbella has its eyes on future starlet, actress JAMIE CHUNG. Jamie Jilynn Chung first arrived on our screens as a cast member of the MTV reality series, The Real World: San Diago. Following her six month stint on the 14th series of MTV’s long running reality show, Chung appeared on the spin off game show Real World/Road Rules Challenge as a contestant from the 2005 series, along with her “Good Guys,” teammates, Chung was victorious and became a firm reality TV favourite. Her infectious personality caught the eye of TV and film executives and she gained cameo roles in Veronica Mars,

16

Greek, ER and I Now Pronounce you Chuck and Larry before signing up for a ten episode arc as Cordy Han in Days of our Lives. As her television career progressed, film roles appeared as Chung tactfully managed to leave her reality television background behind her. A leading role in Dragon Ball Evolution as well as supporting roles in Grown Up’s, staring Adam Sandler, Burning Palms and Sorority Row cemented her status as one to watch, the latter earned Chung the Female Stars of Tomorrow Award at the 2009 ShoWest industry trade show along with her

It doesn’t hurt being Simon Cowell’s protégé, following their success on last year’s X Factor, five piece boy band One Direction are storming the charts with their debut single, What Makes You Beautiful which made download history last month as the most pre-ordered download track ever! With a strictly regimented publicity tour ahead, Mr. Cowell treated the boys to their own swanky apartments in London. 18 year olds Zain, Niall and Liam are the proud new residents of luxury pads in a contemporary London complex whereas 19 year old Louis Tomlinson, who has firmly taken on the big brother role within the group, is sharing with 17 year old Harry Styles. The apartments are all located within one block, complete with cinema room and gym. However it isn’t all work and no play, following a little too much fun at Alexandra Burke’s birthday celebration at Gilgamesh in London, Mr Cowell and his team set a 1am curfew for the boys to ensure the publicity of their upcoming album remains a priority. Yet with the keys safely in their hands I can’t imagine they are going to be complaining about having to retire a little early!

Following in the Kardashian family footsteps the youngest daughter of Kris and Olympic athlete Bruce Jenner, is set to take the modeling world by storm. 14 year old Kylie Jenner started her modeling career in 2010 when she stared in One Call’s music video Blacklight and 2011 saw her first official campaign for Sherri Hill prom dresses which she fronted with sister, Kendall Jenner. Continuing her path to world modeling domination Kylie took to the runway at the Abbey Dawn by Avril Lavigne fashion show last month. The “Keeping up with the Kardashians” starlet walked the catwalk three times during the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week show at the Metropolitan Pavilion. In true Kardashian tradition and ready to support their youngest sibling, sister’s Kim, accompanied by her new beau Kris, Khloe and Kendall were all there to give their support. The famous family’s step brother Brody Jenner was also in the audience accompanied by his long term girlfriend, Avril Lavigne, the proud designer.

Sorority Row castmates. 2011 saw Chung take the main role as Amber in Sucker Punch alongside Vanessa Hudgens and Emily Browning, followed by the supporting role of Lauren, Stu’s fiancé, in the notorious sequel to The Hangover. With two exciting roles in the pipeline, including The Man with The Iron Fist starring Lucy Liu and Russel Crowe and a superior role in the 2012 action thriller, Premium Rush, directed by David Koepp. It appears Jamie Chung has truly shed her reality TV status and can look forward to a very bright future.

Following a phenomenal few years, the cast of Glee have decided to give something back. Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment and the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) recently kicked off the GLEE Give a Note campaign, commencing with a one million dollar donation from the hit TV show. The GLEE Give a Note campaign focuses on school arts programs across the USA. It involves encouraging high school students to make a video of themselves singing, dancing or rapping and submit it online to be in the chance of winning a proportion of this generous donation. In December, a total of 73 schools will be notified that they are among the fortunate recipients of grants ranging from $10,000 to $50,000. In true GLEE style, the more creative the better… it is officially time to find your inner Gleek! Katie Holmes is putting her movie career on the backburner and making a spectacular return to the small screen to join the cast of the hit CBS show, How I Met Your Mother. Holmes will take on the uniquely titled role of, “slutty pumpkin,” a character first referenced to early on during the show’s freshman season. Co-creator of the comedy series, Craig Thomas revealed that he saved Holmes for, “perhaps the most classily named character in our show’s history.” He went on to add that the role was “literally six seasons in the making.” No pressure then! Katie will follow in the footsteps of Britney Spears, Katy Perry and Rachel Bilson who have all made guest appearances.

VAMPIRE HEAT

They have been keeping it under the radar for over a year, but the truth has finally come out. The Vampire Diaries hotties, Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev have confirmed their relationship by arriving hand in hand at the MuchMusic Video Awards. They continued their affectionate display in a gushing interview as Ian revealed, “She truly enjoys life. Her desire to experience and appreciate everything around her, and chuckle and enjoy it, is great.” Nina responded, “He always has a positive outlook and positive energy, and he’s always happy. He is a glass-half-full kind of guy, not half-empty.”

SURPRISE SURPRISE!

Notorious commitmentphobe Simon Cowell has allegedly called off his engagement to Afghan-born makeup artist Mezghan Hussainy. Following their 18 month engagement, Hussainy has been booted out of Simon’s Hollywood home and into another of his prestigious properties dubbed the “girlfriend grave.” Apparently this is a classic Mr Cowell move and the abode to which all girlfriends transfer to when the relationship dies down. The move is Simon’s way of calling it quits, as it appears history may be repeating itself, when Terri Seymour’s time came to an end she lived in the hillside home for eighteen months before taking residence in a new property, also believed to be paid for by Mr Cowell. It seems like Mezghan has got a pretty good deal, 18 month’s with the media mogul and accommodation for life!

She may only be 3 months old but

Harper Seven Beckham

The tot fought off stiff competition from the likes of Lady Gaga, Justin Beiber and Rihanna but it proves that being the only daughter of Victoria and David Beckham has some serious pulling power within the Hollywood elite. However Harper better keep on her toes as Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale’s sons Kingston and Zuma were hot on her heels in second and third place, and when Suri Cruise hears the news she has been knocked to fourth place there could be trouble.

Following various public appearances, rumours began to circulate of an evident sexual tension between July’s SOCIETY MARBELLA cover girl

Jennifer Lopez

and The Hangover heartthrob, Bradley Cooper. Gossip kicked into overdrive last

month when the couple were spotted enjoying an intimate dinner in New York City. Sources have confirmed that the meeting was just for “business,” but no one can deny sparks were flying, and following J.Lo’s speedy relationship history, we are sure we won’t have to wait too long to find out if there is truth behind the tension.

BREAST CANCER SPECIAL 19

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month By Christie Holland

The best prevention is early detection Breast Cancer is one of the UK’s biggest killers, taking over 12,000 lives a year, with an average of one new case being diagnosed every ten minutes. Sadly, more people than ever are being diagnosed with breast cancer every year, however survival rates are improving thanks to improved treatment and earlier detection.

Back to Basics Breast cancer begins in a cell, which divides and multiplies at an uncontrolled rate. A small clump of cancer cells are too tiny to be felt, so the earliest stages of breast cancer usually have no symptoms. A mammogram can detect cancer before you can feel a lump, which is why annual screening mammograms are so important. October is the annual Breast Cancer Awareness Month, created to educate and empower women to have the best breast health. This annual international health campaign, organized by major breast cancer charities every October, helps to increase awareness and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure. This month SOCIETY MARBELLA felt it was our duty to help to spread the word and show what you can do to help.

Breast Cancer Survivors The highest profile breast cancer sufferer is pop sensation Kylie Minogue. Born in Melbourne Australia, the sultry pop superstar was originally misdiagnosed and it was only on a second visit in May 2005 the doctor confirmed early-stage breast cancer. On receiving the news Kylie put an end to her touring schedule in order to have chemotherapy and radiation

20

treatments. Following Miss Minogue’s diagnosis aged 37, there was a sharp rise in the number of women aged 25 to 44 opting for breast imaging and breast biopsies. Minogue likened her battle with the disease to “experiencing a nuclear bomb,” but has proudly fought to raise awareness and encouraged women to receive regular screenings and checkups. In an interview after her treatment she revealed, “my message to all of you and everyone at home is, because someone is in a white coat and using big medical instruments doesn’t necessarily mean they are right.” Christina Applegate, Emmy and Golden Globe nominated actress, was diagnosed with breast cancer in April 2008. At first Christina lived in silence with the disease, too afraid to face the reality but then made the decision to go public with her personal battle to help raise awareness among young women who may not think they’re at risk. As the daughter of a breast cancer sufferer, Christina had always been vigilant about undergoing annual mammograms, although due to the denseness of her breasts, her doctor suggested an MRI scan. When the doctor revealed that Christina’s biopsy results following the MRI scan had come back positive, she made a courageous and life changing decision – to have a double mastectomy. In an interview following her surgery, Christina revealed that she experienced her first and last nude photo shoot before the operation, “I made sure that I have close-up photographs of them from every angle so I can kind of remember them.” Despite the

physical and emotional scars she will live with, Christina is an inspiration for young women today suffering from this vicious disease. She took a proactive stance and this has enabled her to live her life to the fullest and achieve success in more ways than one. Like many celebrities, actress Cynthia Nixon of Sex and the City fame chose not to reveal her breast cancer diagnosis until after she had dealt with the monumental news privately. Diagnosed in 2006, she had a lumpectomy and six and a half weeks of radiation. Nixon, whose mother is also a breast cancer survivor, has stated that knowing her personal risk “made me more aware and more empowered when I faced my own diagnosis.” Since her recovery, Cynthia has joined the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization to help educate women around the world about breast cancer. Sheryl Crow may be best known for her music, but she has also used her celebrity status as a breast cancer survivor to help raise awareness about the importance of early detection. In 2006, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and had a lumpectomy and radiation treatment. Crow revealed that she had no signs or symptoms prior to her diagnosis; her cancer was detected via her yearly screening mammogram. Due to her firsthand experience, Sheryl has spent the last five years raising awareness and encouraging women of all ages, especially those with dense breasts like herself, not to skip this vital exam.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

NOURISH THE SOUL O ctober is breast cancer awareness month and I am sure that we all know somebody that has been affected by this devestating illness. I myself have lost close family members to this devastating disease. I know first-hand how difficult it can be to deal with everyday life; even the simplest things can start to feel overwhelming. I am not going to lie to you, it’s hard going through surgery, radiation therapy, biological therapy or chemotherapy and it is throughout these periods that the importance of keeping a healthy diet is crucial. Giving your body the nutrients it needs is an excellent way to help your body stay strong and healthy, enabling it to fight the cancer.

Christine Zellen, director of 5 Dinners explains how you can help fight breast cancer with a balanced diet and a positive approach to nutrition.

BREAST CANCER SPECIAL

During chemotherapy for example, the taste and smell of food can change, causing lack of appetite and this can lead to nutritional deficiency. This is something that must be avoided at all costs. However, if you are feeling unwell, it can become a real struggle just getting to the shops, let alone finding all the ingredients to create healthy meals.

BREAST SCREENING

The question needs to be asked again, should we continue to concentrate on procedures that can only detect an existing lump, or should we be focusing on screening methods that can warn us of pending problems in advance of a lump developing?

Thermal Imaging

Over 800 peer-reviewed studies with over 300,000 women participating have demonstrated the efficacy of Thermal Breast Screening. Studies have shown that breast thermography can detect the first potential signs of cancer up to 10 years before any other procedure.

24

During and after breast cancer treatment, while it is important to get enough calories to nourish the body, it is also important to maintain a healthy weight. Changing your relationship with food and eating involves a major shift in thinking, feeling and doing. The goal of this shift is to create a lifestyle change, not to temporarily lose weight on a diet. For any advice of information please do not hesitate to contact me. We are now delivering from Málaga to Estepona Tel +34 952 768 331 or email info@5cenas.com 5cenas.com This new blood vessel formation is called Malignant Angiogenesis.

Are we screening or are we detecting?

* Breast cancer is now the most common cancer in the UK. * In the UK in 2006, over 45,500 women were diagnosed with breast cancer, around 125 women a day. * Breast cancer is the leading cause of death for women aged 34 – 54. * Breast cancer has increased by more than 50% over the last 25 years. * Worldwide, more than 1,000,000 wom en are diagnosed with breast cancer every year.

Often a family member or friend may be able to assist you, but in the occasions they cannot, help is at hand from 5 Dinners. We can support by providing a well-balanced menu making sure we include all the 5 different food groups, which will help to optimize your immune system, strength and treatment tolerance.

It is: • Pain Free • 100% Safe • No Contact • No Radiation • Non Invasive There are no contra-indications for Thermal Imaging making it safe for pregnant women and those with breast implants. Equally, it is as efficient for those under the age of 50 whose breast tissue is often too dense for the more traditional detection methods. How Does it Work We are aware that the body produces heat and an injury i.e. a swollen ankle admits excess heat. Diseased cells, e.g. cancer, usually produce much more heat in their earliest stages of development (before a tumour forms) by: * Stimulating new blood vessels to help them grow * Re-opening unused blood vessels * Maintaining those blood vessels al ready in use

With more blood flow, there is more heat. Thermal Imaging examines these “hot spots” which can be the earliest warning signs of potential cancerous activity. This activity has been shown to begin years before a tumour or a lump forms and before any warning signs can be given by other screening methods.

What Can be Done

At best and if caught early enough, simple life style changes may halt and reverse any abnormality and if the worst outcome presents itself catching the disease early offers you the highest success rate. There is no comparison or competition between Thermal Imaging and the traditional mammogram, both “looking” for different things but surely, screening that is 100% safe and can “see” abnormalities at their earliest stages rather than lump detection is where we should be focusing? Every abnormality is not necessarily cancer but every cancer starts as an abnormality.

Why wait?

Instead, we use a revolutionary technique where a link of your new Flashpoint is attached to a lock of your own hair. They will feel and behave very much like your own hair and you can generally have them professional coloured, permed and styled as you like. One of the common side effects of chemotherapy is hair loss and for many women, it’s the hardest part of the breast cancer experience. The experts at the Advanced Hair Studio in Marbella answer some of the most frequently asked questions.

Will my hair eventually grow back?

The answer depends on the treatment and the medication you are taking. In most cases, hair loss is temporary. You can expect normal hair growth to return approximately 3-4 months after your final treatment.

Will my hair look the same?

Truthfully, your hair may change in appearance. Due to the absence or alteration of pigment, the hair may grow back a different colour or texture from the hair that was lost. Your hair will most likely return to the way it used to be after the effect of chemotherapy on the hair follicle wears off.

My short hair doesn’t suit me

Hair extensions are an excellent option for getting past that awful ‘in between stage.’ Former breast cancer sufferer Kylie Minogue opted for extensions after she lost her hair. RECONSTRUCT

YOUR LIFE tracture (hardening of the scar tissue around the implant) and revisional surgeries. In the case of autologous (microsurgical) breast reconstruction, women need to find a specialized center, which is per forming this kind of procedure on a regular basis, because it is a highly specialized procedure and if it is done by surgeons with a high number of cases the complication rate is significantly lower. What are the general criteria for choosing either immediate or delayed breast reconstruction?

A

s Breast Cancer Awareness Month is upon us SOCIETY MARBELLA thought it was time to talk to one of the coast’s leading plastic surgeon’s Kai Kaye from Ocean Clinic about the process of reconstructive surgery, a procedure that often takes place during or after a mastectomy. What exactly does breast reconstruction involve? Breast Reconstruction involves the recreation of the 3-dimensional breast shape after a mastectomy (removal of the breast) due to breast cancer. This reconstruction can either be done at the same moment of the mastectomy (immediate reconstruction) or at a later date (delayed reconstruction). Often it includes the recreation of a natural-looking areola and nipple. What are the questions women need to ask themselves before opting for breast reconstruction? Women need to ask themselves seriously if they are ready to undergo the long and sometimes painful process of breast reconstruction. Breast reconstruction is a large undertaking that usually takes multiple operations. Sometimes these follow-up surgeries are spread out over weeks or months. If an implant is used, the individual runs the same risks and complications as those who use them for breast enlargement but has higher rates of capsular con-

26

The primary part of any breast reconstruction procedure can often be carried out at the same time as the mastectomy. In the case of patients with significant medical comorbidities like diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure or in the case of strong smokers the surgeon may choose to per form delayed reconstruction to decrease the risk of complications. Patients expected to receive additional radiotherapy as part of their adjuvant treatment are also commonly considered for delayed autologous reconstruction due to significantly higher complication rates with tissue expanderimplant techniques in those patients. What are the choices in breast cancer surgery and reconstruction? Patients need to ask themselves if they want to have a breast reconstruction with their own body tissue (so called autologous reconstruction) or with prosthetic implants. In the case of autologous breast reconstruction, the plastic surgeon reconstructs the breast using tissue from other parts of the body (e.g. from the back, the abdomen, the gluteal area). The advantage of this method is that there is no foreign body in the breast and the results can be very natural; disadvantage is that the patient faces a long operation, which leaves scars in other areas and can be prone to complications. In the case of a reconstruction with implants the new breast skin envelope is

BREAST CANCER SPECIAL

formed by the used of so called tissue expanders which are then changed for permanent silicone or saline implants. The advance is a shorter operation time and no new scars, the disadvantage is the time needed for expansion (in the case of total mastectomy) and the possible long-term complications associated with implants (e.g. encapsulation). What are the options for nipple reconstruction? The reconstruction of the nippleareola complex is usually delayed until after the breast shape reconstruction is completed so that the positioning can be planned precisely. The Plastic Surgeon can choose between different techniques of reconstructing the nipple-areolar complex, including: * Nipple-Sharing-Technique: if one of both breasts has not been reconstructed and the nipple and areolar are sufficiently large, tissue may be harvested and transplanted to recreate a natural nippleareolar complex on the reconstructed side. * Local Flaps Technique: a nipple can be created by raising a small skin-subcutaneous tissue flap in the target area and producing a raised mound of skin. To create an areola, skin can be removed around the around the new nipple and than replaced with a skin graft from the outer/inner labia to achieve better colour and texture match. The nipple and areolar region may then be tattooed to produce a realistic colour match with the other breast. Av. CONFIDENCE AFTER CANCER

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

Permanent make-up can restore a breast cancer sufferer’s dignity, an important stage on the road to emotional recovery.

A

s if being diagnosed with cancer isn’t testing enough, the effects of chemotherapy and subsequent operations can cause the most distress. You start to lose everything that made you feel feminine, your lashes, eyebrows, hair or even your breasts. There are however a few solutions to make this period of your life a little easier to cope with and you may be surprised to find out that permanent make up is one of the most successful.

The implanted pigments remain there for a period of up to five years.

With nearly 30 years’ experience in micropigmentation and facial corrections, Cosmoclinic & Isabelle’s aesthetic and beauty centre have built a reputation for quality, natural-looking results. They can produce results that can dramatically improve the self esteem and confidence of someone who has had to undergo treatment for breast cancer and can help them to feel like a real woman again.

Permanent make up is a beauty procedure in which permanent pigments, made up of inorganic minerals are surgically inserted into the skin’s dermal layer.

For most women, the loss of eyebrows and lashes are very hard to cope with as it removes their femininity. Permanent make up is a great solution while you are waiting for your hair to grow back. It is also the only long-term solution for people whose brows have failed to grow back after chemotherapy.

Using expert techniques, the team are able to recreate a natural-looking nipple, even with no circular areola graft scar to work from. However this treatment is not just for cancer survivors: areola permanent makeup, also known as areola tattooing can be used post breast augmentation or reduction to restore the appearance of a natural areola or just to darken pale areolas

Scar Camouflage

After a mastectomy you can be left with unsightly scars. They can be completely

void of colour or darker than the natural skin colouring. If extreme care is taken when custom blending, colour scars can be restored somewhat successfully. It is one of the most complicated treatments, which should only be performed by experts such as the team at Isabelle’s. Permanent make up can help promote acceptance of self image, while restoring a sense of completion and closure at the end of a very long journey. NOT IN VEIN By Nicola McGeorge

M

The Marbella Vein Clinic specialises in varicose vein treatment, spider veins, venous ulcers and thread vein removal.

y family are not very good at dealing with medical problems. Well to tell you the truth, we just don’t deal with them period. Burying our heads in the sand is always the preferred solution. However, some things just cannot be left untreated and I have just found out that varicose veins are one of them. It is a health concern that can induce serious complications. These include, Thrombophlebitis, where your superficial veins can become painful and reddened due to the formation of a clot in your veins, bleeding – your varicose veins can bleed if you cut or bump your leg, varicose eczema (a permanent disorder) where your skin can become brown or purple and finally, venous ulcers a condition that results in ulcers leaking fluid from the varicose vein into the surrounding tissue. As my Father has suffered from unsightly varicose veins for years, I decided to drag him to the renowned Dr Dhobb from the Marbella Vein Clinic under the pretence that it was just research for my article. Naughty I know. The Advanced Vein Clinic in Marbella provides a complete range of venous treatments available using the latest technology. Dr. Francis M. Dhobb is a consultant vascular surgeon who has undergone in-depth training and experience with all aspects of endo vascular surgery and open operative techniques to treat vascular disease.

28

THE DIAGNOSIS

To work out the position and amount of valve damage, Dr Dhobb first had to perform a Colour Doppler test on my Father. This is an ultrasound technique that uses sound waves to produce an image of the inside of your leg. It gives information about the direction of blood flow in your vein and whether your valves are working properly. Thankfully the results were not as bad as I had imagined. It seems that the valves in one of his veins do not close properly. This forces the blood to flow backward (venous reflux), increasing the venous pressure and inducing pooling of blood in the vein that causes it to enlarge.

THE TREATMENT

The whole procedure would take place under local anesthesia. There would be no post operative pain and my Father would be able to resume a normal life immediately afterwards. The doctor opted for the Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA,) which is a new minimally invasive method for treating large varicose veins. It uses laser energy applied inside the incompetent vein to seal it shut. Once a laser-targeted varicose vein is treated by endovenous laser technique, the venous blood flow is rerouted from it to normal veins within the leg where it can effectively flow back to the heart and lungs. With EVLA, a small puncture is made in the leg and a laser fibre is inserted into the diseased vein allowing its treatment from inside the lumen. All large varicose veins are treated in one session in the

same leg. This requires only microincisions and no skin sutures. I will keep you updated with my Fathers progress. Testimonial - Louise Truelove of Aria Medical Group “I have had uncomfortable, ugly, varicose veins on my legs for years so I made an appointment to see Dr Dhobb. From the outset, he put my mind at rest, answering all my questions about what could be done, what results I could realistically expect, whether I would be in any discomfort and what the downtime would be. Now, 5 months after the procedure, I am over the moon with the results. I have had a wonderful summer wearing all of the short skirts and shorts I’ve wanted to wear for years. I’ve seen my pre operative photographs and can’t believe I left it so long before having the procedure.” The Marbella Vein Clinic , Edificio Camojan , Carretera de Camojan , 29602 Marbella . WEARING YOU DOWN

A

re you one of the millions of people suffering from headaches, dizziness, or other symptoms caused by an incorrect bite? Dr. Gerhard Steinruck may have the answer. The masticatory system is not just for chewing. One of its essential functions is actually stress management, particularly at night but it is also utilised during the day as people often react to stress by grinding and clenching their teeth. When doing so, enormous forces are released, (up to 200 kg have been measured.) This not only affects the teeth, (they can loosen or be worn down,) but also the muscles of the jaws, the neck and the back. This happens when the bite is not right!

30

The following symptoms could come from a non-fitting bite: * Facial Pain * Headache and Migraine * Neck, shoulder and back pain * Ringing in the ears, tinnitus and vertigo What could be done? The goals of treatment are to reduce pain, prevent permanent damage to the teeth and reduce clenching as much as possible. To resolve the issue, a specialized dental surgeon needs to examine the relation of your jaw to your bite, in other words how your teeth meet. Your bite has to meet a special pattern, if the nerve that controls the muscles of mastication feels that only the lower front teeth are in contact, it lowers the power of the masticatory muscles to

2kg. That’s the power we need to bite an apple or to eat a piece of bread. The high forces of clenching and grinding cannot be developed. So if your grinding and clenching is triggered by a false bite the specialist will correct this by a selective adjustment of the biting surfaces of your teeth. If your daily stress (work, children, relationship, etc,) is triggering a grinding and clenching habit, the specialist can put a splint over your teeth to calm down and relax the masticatory muscles and the adjacent muscles of the neck and back. ave you ever wondered how celebrities manage to sustain those perfectly formed eyebrows? The secret is HD Brows, now available on the coast.

By Nicola McGeorge

Regular readers will know that I have a slight obsession with eyebrows. Well do you know anyone else that bleaches their eyebrows? Exactly! So, you can imagine my excitement when I found out that HD Brows had arrived in Marbella. What do you mean you haven’t heard of it? This is THE hottest beauty treatment of the moment. It is a procedure that transforms even the most over plucked brow into the perfect shape, dramatically enhancing your facial features. HD Brows master Michelle Mellett is now offering this service to us mere mortals at leading salons along the coast. The ‘HD Brows’ look is not achieved by any one, single process despite taking its lead from the ancient art of threading; it is a combination of seven different procedures that achieve the final result. Although it may seem quite simple, artistry is not a skill you are likely to see possessed by your usual beautician and only someone who is totally proficient in each discipline can truly be called an HD Brows master. HD Brows excels at shape and definition, whether for custom brow maintenance or where a corrective approach is required because simply plucking and cleaning up strays has not given excellent results. In approximately 45 minutes, HD

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR Brows’ precision grooming expertly transforms brows into the perfect shape to enhance the face. The procedure uses a combination of skills that begin with a consultation to determine the best shape, followed by tinting, waxing, threading, tweezing,’soothing’ and finishing. Shaping eyebrows is a simple technique that frames the face and can transform a person’s overall look. Short of plastic surgery, eyebrow shaping can do more to improve someone’s appearance than most other beauty treatments. Simply choosing the best eyebrow shaping routine gives you the effect of a face lift or cosmetic surgery minus the pain, costs and negative effects. The celebrity popularity of HD Brows reached new heights recently when Katie Price and her famous makeup artist Gary Cockerill completed the HD Brows training programme at the Milton Keynes academy. Whoever you are, whatever the state of your eyebrows, HD Brows puts celebrity beauty within your reach. For more information please contact Michelle Mellett +34 636 899 636

ARE YOU LETTING

DECIDE WHO SPAINRECEIVES YOUR ASSETS? By Dimas Cuesta Montejano

D

o you have assets in Spain? Though a British Will is recognised under Spanish law and the Hague Convention, it can be an extremely lengthy and complicated process for the benefactor to receive their inheritance, often resulting in expensive legal and translation fees. If a Spanish Will has not been settled and registered in the Last Wills Central Registry in Madrid, your beneficiary would pass through a highly bureaucratic process and your Will may be ignored entirely.

apply, contesting your British Will in Court and voiding it. Though in the UK you are able to leave assets to whom you wish, in Spain there are specific rights for protected heirs such as dependents. Amongst other things forced heirship rules impose that a minimum of two thirds must be left to the children and that a life interest on one third must also be left to any surviving spouse. This means that less than a third of your assets will remain in your decision.

To use a British Will in Spain requires the benefactor to obtain a Grant of Probate no matter the size of the assets; this will also require translation and legalisation at the foreign and commonwealth office. If you die as a resident in Spain with no assets in England then the Grant of Probate is even more difficult to obtain and a special procedure would be required in English Court. This normally costs an average of 20,000 GBP but is dependent on your level of assets.

Having a Spanish Will is highly advisable, and allows you to ensure peace of mind that your chosen benefactors will receive what they are due without adding further stress to the situation. Also if you are concerned about the potential application of Spanish forced heirship rules, there are estate planning structures that help very efficiently to avoid these problems depending on your particular circumstances. If you require advice or a second opinion about Estate Planning and Inheritance Tax, or you are wishing to contest an invalid Will, please contact me at Lexland Abogados to arrange a free consultation meeting where we may discuss your options.

Most importantly, and far too often overlooked, is that if you are resident in the UK with assets only in Spain then the Spanish forced heirship rules will

DESIGN BY

PENANC Design by Penanc is a revolutionary interior design company based in Marbella. Owned and managed by Peter Meirsman, it caters for all areas of interior design; from the initial design concept to the finished product. Laura-Jane Bruce caught up with Peter to find out about his background, company and exclusive Swarovski product.

L-JB: Where does your passion for interior designing stem from? PM: My experience dates back as far as 1893, as I am the 5th generation in a line of painters and decorators. From the onset, my family were entrepreneurs; always searching for new and innovative ways to enhance their work. Aged just 14, my grandfather broke into the industry, and therefore pushed my father and myself to start learning the tricks of the trade from a young age. L-JB: But your passion for perfection can be traced back to a rather unfortunate event also? PM: My father lost his business partner at the age of 28, and from that day on, he realised how short and unpredictable life could be, so made sure every job was completed to 200 percent, and he passed that mantra down to me. L-JB: You started working in the industry from a very tender age didn’t you? PM: I was twelve years old when I began shadowing my father in the school holidays. It was in my nature to want to work in the same field as my family, but my father didn’t give me

48

any graces for working with him; I had to start from the very bottom and work my way up. At the time I wanted to be working right underneath him, but was forced to start from the beginning. I remember one job I was assigned to, to sand windows in an ancient castle near Brussels, but the design of the castle was so poor that it actually drew blood. I was furious with my father at the time, but now I see that he was teaching me to be disciplined and determined. It taught me the valuable lesson; you can never finish a project in a perfect way if you haven’t suffered through the preparation. In addition, I also completed various master classes in decorating, colours and paint compounds. I completed my education at the age of 21 to begin working full time in my father’s company. L-JB: And how did this progress to opening an interior design house in Marbella? PM: Through a fairly serious rugby injury as a young teen, I developed my father’s philosophy to give everything you have, and not to take life for granted. My interest in the field matured as I got older, but I wasn’t 100 percent satisfied working in Belgium; I wanted to expand my horizons. I have always functioned like a sponge: absorbing information, listening to people, learning from experiences and pushing limits. So by the end of 1999, I

had to choose; French Riviera or Southern Spain, and it was a very difficult decision, but I chose Marbella and don’t regret it. L-JB: Tell us about some of your past projects. PM: I have worked for some extremely high-level clients in Belgium in the past. In the middle of the 1990’s, my father and I had a waiting list of 2 years! We once received a phone call from an architect responsible for all federal monuments and buildings, and with him, worked on a selection of exclusive projects. These included the famous HBK Bank in Antwerp and the prestigious chain ‘Wagon Lit’, which compromises of classified high standing bars in train stations, all decorated with gold leaf and other precious finishes. One particular train station we worked on was the interior and exterior of Leuven, which included a 5-meter tall statue and in total took us three years to complete. Our proudest achievement has to be working for the Belgian Royal Family on their Royal Crypt, which houses the tombs of the entire Royal Family history. From this, we became the official purveyor to the Royal Household; such an amazing achievement!

L-JB: That’s incredible! But what makes you unique? PM: From working for all these amazing people, I never stop searching for exceptional ways to develop and work with products. I want to make each client feel special, and try to create something unique for them. To this day, I continue with the philosophy of my family: to start where other people’s imagination stops. At first, I focused on being a specialist in exclusive patented paint effects here in Marbella, but as clients enquired about more services, I developed my business into what it is today; a complete interior design service using our own craftsmen based in Marbella, working all over the world, including Nice, Belgium, Gibraltar and Montenegro. L-JB:What services do Design by Penanc offer? PM: The complete interior design service, from kitchens and bedrooms to bathrooms, wardrobes and more. All furniture and decorations are made to measure, using the highest quality materials and exclusive branded fittings. Manufacture and installation is performed by our in-house craftsmen, using patented floor, wall, ceiling and furniture finishes. We are at your service to manage all aspects of a project, including building permissions and other legal procedures. We have also developed a completely unique Swarovski wall finish. L-JB:Sounds exciting! Tell us more. PM: Six years ago on a trip back to Belgium, we visited our paint manufacturer. Whilst enquiring to the manager about exclusive novelties, I was shown a rough unfinished Swarovski paint sample. It was such a privilege to see this sample, as very few people in the factory were aware of it, it was still in its early stages of development. We flew four craftsmen to Belgium to learn how to apply and work with the product, as it is extremely precious and exclusive; using THE most expensive paint technique in the world was incredible. It took us four years to develop it into what it is today. To be the only worldwide license-holder for ‘JEWEL’ made with Swarovski Elements is an honour.

Swarovski crystals per square meter, can be added as an inlay into mdf wood or hard wood for furniture, kitchens and decorative objects. For example, as simple as a border in your living room, or as complex as a signature in a headboard. We are constantly experimenting with “JEWEL” novelties and currently testing an array of ideas. I can’t say a lot about it but it promises to be extremely luxurious and eye catching and, as always, something that nobody else in the world has. That’s what makes Design by Penanc so special in the world of interior design.

L-JB: How does it work? PM: Currently, we are personally developing the product so that ‘JEWEL’, which is based on half a million

BLACKSHAW

INTERIOR DESIGN

Interior design is a thriving business along the Costa del Sol. From the initial design stages, to the finished product, talented creatives are able to ensure your dream becomes a reality. Laura-Jane Bruce caught up with Sally Blackshaw, of Blackshaw Interior Design, to find out more about her creative company.

L-JB: How long have you been designing? Both initially and here in Marbella. SB: I’ve been designing in Marbella for 11 years, after moving here in 2000. Before that, I was mainly involved in commercial work for companies like GAP and Moss Brothers designing and opening new high street stores in West London and other sites in the UK. L-JB: Is this something you were trained in or are you self-taught? SB: I studied interior design for two years, followed by completing a four-year degree at the London Institute, specializing in retail design management. L-JB: What previous projects have you worked on? SB: I have been privileged to manage projects for FENDI Casa and assisting in designing and opening the ARMANI Casa and John Hutton showrooms. Also other local companies including Interna and exclusive property developers, and from this, started to manage my own freelance projects. L-JB: Why did you choose to open your design studio in Marbella, namely La Campana? SB: After working for various high-end companies, I opened Blackshaw Interior Design in 2006. After just a few months, client interest doubled almost immediately, so it was a natural progression for the company to open a showroom. It was just a case of needing to have a bright, creative space to showcase furniture, and work on our various projects, and where we could be located easily. L-JB: What products/clients do you work with? SB: We source our products, materials and fabrics by travelling around Europe, and visiting different trade fairs. This is a massive investment for the company, and essential in keeping in touch with the design world. We work with all major brands from all over the world, such as Designers Guild, Casamance, Cassarro and Zinc. We have hundreds of brands in our portfolio, meaning that we have access to a complete spectrum of furniture and

50

many restaurants and cafés. Commercial work is preferable, as it is more about concept, what is best for the business, and how the customers feel when using the space. It is what I am trained in after all; giving you the chance to be creative, and also more people get to see your work, which is a huge bonus!

lighting, ensuring all clients’ needs are met. All projects are different, we mainly work on residential projects, but now we are starting to take on more commercial work, allowing us to be more creative. Clients could be from all over the world, so you never know who’s going to ask you to redesign their house or business. That’s what keeps it interesting; all clients are different, with different cultures, tastes and backgrounds. L-JB: Explain a typical project from start to finish and the work you are involved with. SB: The beginning of a project is like trying to tap into the client’s vision, building a relationship, and making sure both client and company are moving in the same direction. From this, we draw up plans, advise what is possible, plan the space, apply for licenses for building work etc. We spend a lot of time with the clients, showing them visuals until they are happy with the outcome. Then it’s a case of making the orders for the products, and getting the right contractors in place. This way, we have seamless installations. LJB: Do you have a typical style? SB: If anything, I would say contemporary, with an eclectic twist. Spacious, but not stark, where products can be added to give personality and homeliness. The style we use at Blackshaw Interior Design is evolving and adapting from client to client, but it is important that it has longevity. Good design lasts. Trends do not. But my inspiration comes mostly from travelling and trade fairs. L-JB: Are you limited to houses and holiday homes or do you design commercial projects also? SB: We have completed a few commercial projects here in Marbella. For example, TV One showroom and AHS Advanced Hair Studio in Puerto Banús, along with providing inspiration and furniture to

L-JB: Do you mostly work with English clients or do you have a close affinity with the Spanish community? SB: Funnily enough, we have just taken on a renovation project in Puerto Banus for Spanish clients from Valladolid. We don’t have many Spanish clients, but they seem to enjoy our forward thinking and fresh ideas about interior design. We are a multi-language office, so there are no limitations regarding whom we can collaborate with. L-JB: What does good interior design mean to you? SB: For me, it means delivering a space, for someone to live or work comfortably, that adds value to their lifestyle. A good project should stimulate the senses and convey feelings. When you have worked on a large project for months, it’s satisfying to know you have achieved something that someone will go on to enjoy, and that you have functionally met their requirements. It means stretching yourself to do the best you can, to understand people and the way they want to live or work. L-JB: Do you have any exclusivity with design houses? SB: Not necessarily, but we are main dealers and distributors for many of them, and you can see all of our contact details in national design magazines. We have more contacts than most because of all our travelling, and due to our research into specific pieces that will benefit the client the most. COLOUR Colour blocking is a trend that has traversed from the fashion world into interior design. Loud and proud colour combinations make for a dynamic confident look. Spice up your home with a combination of two or more blocks of colour within a vicinity or individual piece, or showcase a deep contrast by blocking a vibrant hue with a neutral shade. A bright accent chair matched against a pure white wall can be the most effective way to block bright and neutral colours.

Incorporate a berry hue with a rich arrangement of red and purple tones, a vibrant way to introduce confident colour blocking into your home. This selection of furnishings from B&B Italia perfectly represents this “in trend” in an elegant and contemporary manner. B&B Italia offer furniture that differs in terms of style, concept and architectural design a true representation of modern and minimal aesthetic, the blocks of vibrant colours offer a youthful and animated contrast against a neutral backdrop. This Klyne Chair and Ottoman from Crate and Barrel is the epitome of the perfect modern yet vital lounger. Available in a saffron shade, it is the ideal focus for a neutral living room, why not incorporate minute touches of purple in order to create a perfect colour block ensemble. By only introducing two bright colours, you can create a beautiful harmony. crateandbarrel.com

The Piccola Papilo Chair by B&B Italia, is not only functional but aesthetically beautiful, almost a piece of art. Designer, Naoto Fukasawa described the original concept of the chair as “the shape, relaxation, might take if it was to be portrayed in a picture. This smaller version of the Grande Papilio has been designed to fit into the corner of a room as subtle statement, or as multiples arranged in a row, the latter offers the perfect opportunity to utilize the colour blocking trend. Bright citrus shades can add warmth to a room whilst sustaining an element of lightness and purity. Create a tangerine dream with a striking orange lounger or fashion a mellow yellow ambiance with this leather Bend Sofa from B&B Italia. The Bend Sofa represents a series of seats that takes the traditional sofa concept one step further. Designed by Patricia Urquiola, this piece gained its name due to its curvaceous albeit monolithic form; it gives the appearance of being manually moulded from a supple material as if by a sculptor. This sofa breaks away from the traditional visual scheme and differentiates itself from other contemporary pieces on account of its calculated eccentricity.

Less is often more, and in this case, the striking Cloud by B&B Italia, takes centre stage. Ideal for your home or for commercial use and based on a minimalistic floating element, the Cloud can be combined with curved elements to create free flowing compositions. Using one block of colour is often the most effective approach particularly when positioned within minimalistic surroundings.

Being a contemporary trend, colour blocks works particularly well in a structured yet simple environment. Harmonious shades of blues and greens add depth and freshness by creating the illusion of tranquility. A vibrant wall panel displays a modern interpretation and a virtuoso way of injecting blocks of coulour.

The Play Collection Wardrobe from Denelli is versatile and functional; the flexibility of the central panel allows you to create the home you have always dreamt of. With Play your custom made wardrobe ensures a perfect fit and provides the maximum storage combined to suit every taste. denelli.co.uk

DRIVE ON!

Our in-depth motoring review

70

DRIVE ON!

Motoring author, racing driver and photo-journalist Ian Kuah reports on the BMW 640i Coupe The new BMW 6-Series Coupe exudes beauty and elegance. From the moment I saw it in pictures to the time I left the press event, that opinion was set in stone.

71

DRIVE ON! Beautifully proportioned with a long bonnet, short tail and relatively thin roof pillars, the lines of this sleek coupe are also taut in a way that hints at the muscle under its skin. With a more purposeful stance than the first two generations of BMWs to wear this moniker, the latest 6-Series draws admiring glances both at rest and on the move. In terms of raw character, the 640i Coupe is a whole different ball game from its Convertible sister launched six months before. Where the open version of the third generation BMW 6-Series is a rapid but comfortable cruiser, the fixed head version is a more focused drivers’ car, as much at home on a twisty road as blasting down the autobahn. While both 6-Series versions were production ready at the back end of 2010, BMW wisely launched the al fresco version at the turn of the year with the reasoning that cars would be in the showrooms in time for the

72

spring. With the Convertible now well established in everyone’s minds, their attention has turned to promoting the more hard-core Coupe. Unlike its predecessor however, sharp handling does not imply that the new Coupe is in any way uncomfortable or firm riding. If anything, it is now one of the most accomplished cars in its class in this respect. Thanks to BMW’s Adaptive Drive and Dynamic Damper Control options, the 6-Series Coupe offers the best of both worlds, transforming itself from cosseting boulevard cruiser to corner munching sports coupe at the touch of a button The supporting philosophy here is the body-in-white of the new Coupe, which is 34 and eight percent stiffer respectively in static and dynamic torsional stiffness. This equates to around 34,000Nm/degree of twist, and means that the suspension can be tuned to

achieve good handling with a tangible improvement in ride comfort. Spring travel for instance, is 5.0mm longer, and the spring and damper rates have a quite different character from the previous model, which many felt had an overly-stiff secondary ride. Compared to the Convertible, the Coupe’s rear anti-roll bar has been reduced in diameter by 1mm. On paper, that would imply more understeer, or less oversteer, depending on how you look at it. However, because of the elastokinematics that result from the different tuning of the springs and dampers, and the different stiffness model of the structure, the result is a more neutral handling balance befitting the driver oriented Coupe. Uncharacteristically for a new car, the new Coupe is actually 120kg heavier than its predecessor. BMW say that the latest crash safety rules and extra

DRIVE ON!

standard equipment are responsible for the extra weight. At 1,660kg the 640i Coupe is 110kg lighter than the V8-engined 650i, and 70kg lighter than the equivalent Convertible. The coupe’s drag coefficient is 0.31, a slight improvement on the 0.32 of the open version. The new car is 74.0mm longer on a 75.0mm longer wheelbase, and is also 39.0mm wider and 5.0mm taller. While this delivers a more spacious cabin and a more useable rear seat, I would still categorise it as a 2+2, leaving the true four-seater coupe description to more upright designs like the Mercedes E-Class Coupe, which is not actually a direct rival.

There are several possible suspension permutations depending on how you tick the options list. The basic set-up has conventional springs and dampers with the standard fit BMW Drive Control. To that you can add EDC Electronic Damper Control and Adaptive Drive as individual options, and tick the box for Integrated Active Steering (IAS) in addition to the above three as well. This makes for a total of six possible chassis permutations, which is a mind boggling choice for a prospective customer who will probably never have the opportunity to test drive each variant.

You can further skew the game by specifying wheels and tyres that run the gamut from the standard 17-inch (18-inch on the 650i) footwear, all the way to the optically sweet but less real-world practical 20-inches. BMW has to set the suspension as a median to suit all, so the net effect, especially when you take the slight difference in characteristics of different tyres into the equation, is not totally empirical. The latest version of the 2,979cc TwinPower Turbo straight-six motor is simply a cracker. Despite being two cylinders and 1,416cc down on the 650i’s V8, the lighter six still makes a healthy 320hp at 5,800-6,000rpm, with 450Nm of torque from 1,300 to 4,500rpm.

73

DRIVE ON!

Its 0-100km/h time of 5.4 sec and 250km/h top speed are swift enough on paper, but what impressed most is the healthy torque curve that gives the car serious pace on real world roads. It is also more than sufficient to set the traction control light ablaze when you are exiting a tight or medium radius corner with determination. The fact that the eight-speed automatic gearbox has such closely stacked ratios is very apparent when you have the opportunity to wind the car up through the gears. Thanks to the manic way the turbocharged engine rockets to the red line, the revs run out quickly in each of the short ratios. And when you drop to seventh from eighth at 200km/h on the autobahn, the ECU will sense you have 1,000rpm to spare till the redline, and kick down to sixth, giving you optimum acceleration to the next changeup point. An interesting characteristic of the electronic tachometer is the way it flicks round the dial when you upshift on full throttle, with none of the inertia inherent in the mechanical devices of yore. This only serves to underline the real world disconnect between electronic instruments and the laws of physics that a reciprocating engine has to obey! In sound and character, this motor seems like the natural born successor to the motor in the original E24 635CSi or its more muscular M6 bother. From

74

the driver’s point of view, it has the sweetness of the 635CSi combined with the monstrous thrust of the amazing late ‘80s M6, and further boosted by the two turbochargers. That said, it trades the raw, hardedged character and soundtrack of the M6 for stunning drivability, strong low and mid-range torque, a decent top-end and today’s expected levels of economy and emissions. Configured in Sport mode, upshifts are as fast and seamless as makes no difference. It really makes you wonder if this millisecond battle being fought with various twin-clutch and sports oriented gearboxes is not just so much marketing waffle. You can select gears manually on the paddle shifters, and the upshifts are fast and perfectly smooth. In Sport mode, full throttle upshifts deliver a mild jerk. There is no technical reason for this, but the engineers will tell you that it gives a race car feeling. This sounds like a marketing led idea too, and I personally would rather not be reminded of the jerky SMG manu-matic gearboxes of the 1990s! Speaking of high-tech, the list of driver assistance gadgets is a long one and our test cars were loaded to the gunwhales with every conceivable gadget, including the new top-of-theline 1,200-watt Bang & Olufsen highpowered audio system.

B&O have been making huge inroads into the very specialised area of line-fit high-end audio of late, first with Audi, then Aston Martin, Mercedes-Benz and now BMW. The system in the 6-Series has very high definition and clarity and more than enough power for effortless dynamic range. However, I came across a negative aspect of an audio system I have never experienced before in a car. Speaker positioning is very important, even if you use DSP to shape the sound in the hostile environment of a cars interior. Speaker positioning is also a function of the interior design, and the car and audio companies have to work hand in hand for a result that is aesthetically as well as sonically pleasing. In this case, the mid-range door speakers are capable of producing prodigious mid-bass, and on one of the test tracks BMW had loaded into the Hard Disc music bank, the combination of the speaker moving so much air so close to my chest made me feel queasy, and I ended up switching it off. You obviously have to be careful with your source material, it is impressive with jazz and classical, not so with studio equalised rock whose mid-bass is boosted to high heaven. The high-tech in the chassis has no such caveats, and the lack of roll and the supple ride, even in Sport mode are impressive. If you are on the race

track and want to have some fun, Sport+ removes DSC from the equation, allowing you to indulge in power slides at will. All this works well, and with the electronics engaged you can cover ground on public roads very rapidly indeed with a good d=safety net in place. However, the one area where I have reservations is the artificial feeling from the helm on my Integrated Active Steering (IAS) equipped test car. I personally like power-assisted-steering to be just that - assistance. So I found the rather strange feedback I felt in certain corners at low-to-medium speeds a bit off-putting. It feels like an artificial layer between car and driver that makes the responses to control inputs less than totally transparent. On the plus side, the mild rear wheel steering really does what it says on the tin to make the car feel more agile at low speeds and stabilise it during high speed lane changes. But until BMW can make the feedback through the helm more natural, the jury is definitely out on this one. Of course, all this is down to choice, and the fact is that you can have a bare bones 640i with conventional power steering and conventional springs and just BMW’s basic Drive Control. To underline this, I found out that while the basic 640i starts at 74,700 euros in Germany, my all singing, all dancing test car cost a whopping 110,000 eu-

DRIVE ON!

ros. The full suspension and IAS package alone costs 4,950 euros, with the same number attached to the B&O audio system. This first drive left me with a dilemma. I love the looks of the new 6-Series Coupe and its quality inside and out is impeccable. But the model I am most anxious to drive is an absolutely bare bones 640i sans all this electronic wizardry. That, I feel, will reveal more than anything just how good a car BMW’s third generation Coupe really is. Because BMW M GmbH eschews a lot of gadgetry and the Runflat tyres fitted to the mainstream cars, I also cannot wait to see what they have done to turn the new 6-Series into a worthy successor to the mighty V10-powered M6.

LA SALA

INCOMPARABLE LUXURY Words by Christie Holland Photos by Ruth Jones

N

estled between Puerto Banus and Centro Plaza, La Sala has rapidly gained a reputation for being one of the busiest venues along the coast, an accolade they have retained all year round, not only during the archetypal summer season. With their one year anniversary approaching, Society Marbella decided it was time to sample the infamous Smoked Haddock and decedent Sticky Toffee Pudding that the coast’s epicureans have been raving about. Driven by the same success story that is the internationally acclaimed Buddha Beach Club, La Sala has become the ultimate all day dining experience, with its menu offering a vast array of International and Spanish specialties such as Steak Tartare and Deep Fried Cajun Boquerones, all created using the highest quality ingredients. Each day sees a new set lunch menu priced at €15 without compromise to either quality or service. La Sala now offers eight areas in which to drink or dine, ranging from the Spanish “Rincon,” the al-fresco cocktail bar and a soon to be re-launched rear terrace. We arrived at this hustling hotspot just as the sun was drawing in on a late September evening and were welcomed by an enthusiastic valet who kindly insisted on parking my car before pointing us in the direction of the reception. Once settled at our table on the decked terrace, we ordered a bottle of the Pinot Grigio “Blush” allowing us to quench our thirst as we poured over the

82

extensive menu. Famished and spoilt for choice, we opted for three starters to share amongst us. I insisted on the Deep Fried Walnut Crusted Goats Cheese dressed with a Raspberry Salad, the classic walnut element allied to the invigorating raspberry contrast proved to be a rich yet refreshing accompaniment to the creamy, distinctive goats cheese. Iberian ham resting on a bed of Sauté potatoes topped with a perfectly runny fried egg was our subsequent appetizer, along with the Deep Fried Butterfly King Shrimps

complemented by a Mild Curry Mayonnaise. The Panko used to coat the shrimps provided a flawless outer shell, where once bitten a soft crunch revealed ambrosial juicy flavours. The mild curry mayonnaise was a surprisingly perfect companion to the main dish. On completion of our appetizers and having polished off the last of the rose, we contemplated moving onto a red to accompany our main meal. In the end we decided to continue with the voracious theme and opted for both. The waiter kindly recommended the Marques de Riscal “Reserva,” a much appreciated suggestion and a faultless companion to the Chateaubriand, our next arrival. Surrounded by a border of roasted new potatoes, mushrooms and grilled tomato, the succulent meat took centre stage, in terms of place and taste. Predictably perfect and sensationally simple, it was impossible to fault and set the highest of standards for its successors. Our second meat choice was the Deep Fried 5 Spice Duck Leg, Hoi Sin Sauce and Chinese Pancakes, reminiscent of a dish most suited to the tables of Nobu or Hakkasan in London, the moist duck breast fell effortlessly off the bone effortlessly and provided a superlative alternate to the traditional Chateaubriand. For our fish dishes we selected the Smoked Haddock on Crushed Potatoes, Soft Poached Egg and Mild Grain Mustard Sauce and the Teriyaki Salmon with Yaki Tori Noodles. Firm and distinctive, the salmon flavours married flawlessly with the nectarous teriyaki. Prior to our visit, I had heard copious amounts of praise for the haddock and therefore was intrigued to see if it would live up to its high expectations, I can confirm to the coast, it is as delectable as had been described. From the soft and smooth crushed potatoes, to the perfectly poached egg sat aloft, every bite was simply divine.

Brule all made appearances at our table, albeit brief due to their indulgent textures and flavours. The Crème Brule deserves a special mention, served in a trio of shot glasses, each one more pleasurable than the next; it was the perfect combination of sweet and light, an ideal ending to a heavenly, appetizing feast. Recently described by thetraveleditor.com as, “the happening place in Marbella right now,” La Sala looks set to maintain this hard earned reputation and frankly having enjoyed an evening consuming one too many glasses of wine on the bustling terrace, I couldn’t have put it better myself. Barely able to move and wondering how I could ever consume anything else, I fought to look away as the dessert menu appeared, a certain Sticky Toffee Pudding, Caramel Sauce and Vanilla Ice Cream jumped out at me and unable to resist I found myself devouring yet another course. Light and airy, with just the right amount of sweetness, it was mouthwatering and extremely easy to finish despite my bursting stomach. INNOVATIVE EXCELLENCE I

t’s fair to say that we have an abundance of restaurants to choose from here in Marbella. Whether you fancy flavoursome tapas whilst admiring our char ming coastline, or a spicy Indian on a Saturday night snuggled on the sofa watching X Factor, we really do have it all at our fingertips. However, dining at Acacia is like something I have never encountered before, that I will keep with me forever as a once in a lifetime experience. Puerto Banus is the most sought after location, with an array of elegance and char m. It is here we find Acacia, a unique restaurant

with a difference. Named after the affluent Australian Acacia Tree, which flourishes in temperate climates, and has most recently been found in remote locations here on the Costa del Sol. Chef Victor Garvey, the creator and driving force behind Acacia, will be using this resourceful tree to experiment with in his dishes as the sap and bark are both edible. This name is also close to his heart, as it will be the middle name of his soon to be born daughter. Constantly experimenting with flavours, textures and senses, Victor’s vision is to “return to what food should be all about”, no tomfoolery or convolutions here! Using simple, natural ingredients, all of which function within the dish. This food is truly for the epicurean, searching for something different, looking for excitement in each mouthful, wanting to savour each flavour. In his own words, he is in a continuous

84

pursuit of experimental and innovative recipes and combinations. Working for many Michelin star restaurants in the past, he is bursting with talent and has a devotion to his passion. All ingredients used in the inventive and experimental dishes are fresh each day, all sourced from the best places available. The majority of the visionary menu consists of fish dishes sourced from Porto Muinos in northern Spain and local small purveyors, so as to not ruin the balance and marriage of the flavours. Victor prefers to work with fish, as it is more versatile, compared to the complexity and inordinateness of red meat. That’s not to say that Acacia doesn’t cater to the meat lovers out there; Victor can even create a personal menu using an ingredient of your choice if you contact the restaurant two days in advance. What eateries in Marbella can boast that? Clean and minimalistic, not even the décor distracts you from the sincerity of each dish; all ingredients used are apparent within each bite, dancing on your tongue, present for a purpose. The character of the restaurant is only enhanced by its muted chocolate tones and soft cream hues. Our first dish sang to our senses, as all were catered for in the Oysters in the Deep Ocean. Victor wanted to create a feeling of the profound ocean, with the oysters in their natural environment. Boy did he deliver! Assuming that the first sense to be heightened would be sight, personally the fresh scent of the sea escaping from the seaweed blew me away. Next was touch, as it took all my strength not to tear the dish apart to marvel at the hidden sea treasures beneath the grandiose oyster shell. Closely followed by sound, as there beside our plate, lay another crustacean emitting lapping waves crashing against serrated rocks. Following this was sight, as I was taken aback in awe of the beauty and complexity of the dish, along with a mist of seawater defusing from the under-

carriage of a rocky mystery. Lastly came taste, which completed the sensual journey. The seaweed and dry ver mouth emulsion that coated the succulent tempura oysters was creamy and deluxe, and the toasted walnuts and pickled saline vegetables combined per fectly with the rich compounds.

COSTA CUISINE

Following this epic dish was cigalas and local plump shrimp, scattered with a bitter herb salad, drizzled with preserved lemon, confit garlic and roasted purple potato. Also, adding to the beautifully presented work of art was a prawn head, filled with the natural juices of the crustacean and a brandy reduction, which only enhanced the depth of flavours. To complete our journey, tangy tuna tartare encased in a cone of cucumber, with fresh cream, dill and tomato water gel. Each composite of flavour and texture married together faultlessly, and ended what only can be described as an expedition of the aesthetics. We walked out of Acacia, satisfied and boasting food connoisseurs, my friends are almost sick of me gloating about and praising this truly unique gastronomic voyage. I take with me Victor’s mantra, “imagination is more interesting than knowledge”, and with that, I ponder just how that decorate shell generated such veracious wave noises. Parisian Passion Mourad Sahoune is the manager of La Parisienne, a new fresh restaurant and bakery in Centro Plaza. SOCIETY MARBELLA managed to steal ten minutes of Mourad’s time ahead of the October 14 launch to find out more about the face behind this innovative authentic French eatery. dishes. After several years of running and developing the business to make it a success, I chose to travel to South East Asia and Australia to broaden my knowledge of International cuisines and increase my repertoire. After almost a year of travelling, I settled in London, had the pleasure of meeting Mourad Mazouz, owner of the infamous Momo Restaurant, and began working under his expertise as Restaurant Manager. Where are you originally from? Originally from Algeria, I grew up in Marseille. Being one of eight children, food has always been a passion throughout my childhood, as my mother spent her days cooking and baking, ensuring food was continually available for us to enjoy. In turn, it taught me the true value of food, and the experience diners go through. She was the real reason I chose to attend the Culinary School of Marseille to become a chef. What happened after culinary school? With a diploma in hand, I left Marseille and relocated to Paris. It was here I met Mario, who has been appointed Head Chef at La Parisienne. In Paris, I strengthened my knowledge by observing and learning from experienced chefs. From here, I moved onto New York, where I resided for ten years. I was cooking, managing a restaurant, running my own business as a private chef, understanding the demands of clients and growing my business through meeting the right people at the right time. New York is an exciting place for the food and restaurant industry. People are seriously passionate and willing to experiment with new flavours and combinations. I often cooked for the rich and famous who are renowned for being health conscious and open to different cuisines. I experimented with exotic Moroccan dishes, traditional French cuisine with a Provencal influence and innovative raw food

What brought you to Marbella? I met Omaya, the owner and creative genius behind Cake Couture Marbella, through her brother, another food addict whom I previously met in NYC. She had the original idea to open La Parisienne, from the success of her cake business, I instantly knew it was a sure fire hit. From discussing ideas with her, which were scarily identical to mine, we realised that La Parisienne would become our next exciting venture.

CRICKET ON THE COAST H

How often do the teams play?

ere on the Costa del Sol, we are blessed with one of the greatest climates, allowing us to enjoy beachside living, terrace dining and the luxury of outdoor sporting games all year round. Bollywood Indian Restaurant in Nueva Andalucia are currently sponsoring a local cricket team in the Southern Spanish League, and we travelled down to Cartama in Malaga to watch the teams play and find out more about cricket on the coast. What is the Southern Spanish Cricket League? The Southern Spanish Cricket League is run by local cricketers who live and play on the Costa del Sol. Four teams compete together, with a fifth currently being formed. We are fortunate that with our excellent Mediterranean weather we are able to play cricket all year round. How long has the cricket scene been prominent here in Marbella? The cricket scene has been present on the Costa del Sol since the 1980s, the oldest registered club being the Com-

Cricket is played every weekend at the ground in Cartama, just 30 minutes from Fuengirola or 10 minutes from Malaga. There is also a bar serving hot and cold drinks, with families and children welcome to watch from the Pavillion. We host touring teams arriving for pre or post season matches, so if you are part of a team that is interested, please contact us via the website at spanishcrickettours.com. bined Colleges Cricket Club, founded in 1986, which will celebrate its 25th anniversary later this year. How important do you think cricket is to local communities? It’s imperative because it helps unite different communities from all over the Costa del Sol. People originate from different backgrounds and lifestyles, so we have found that Cricket is one of the perfect ways to connect with people you wouldn’t necessarily have the opportunity of meeting. How did you end up sponsoring one of the teams? Four of the staff from Bollywood are actually members of the club, so it seemed natural for us to sponsor one of the cricket teams. What does sponsoring a cricket team involve? Sponsorship of the Spanish Southern Cricket League involves many of factors required of sponsorship on a professional level. This includes paying for kit, clothing and providing the necessary publicity when your team is playing in their various tournaments.

How can people get involved? We are always looking for new players, umpires and even spectators, so if you are interested in involvement, contact Previn Menon on 606 526 618 or email info@spanishcrickettours.com.

Unclog your memory Think back to the 1970’s. What was everyone wearing apart from flares and big hair? Clogs! We all had a pair, and fortunate enough for us, a boutique in San Pedro Poligino has brought the 70’s right into the 21st century. Gunnel’s Zuecos house a range of authentic Swedish clogs, made exclusively from the finest Swedish wood and Italian leather in every style and colour you can think of. Whether looking for a subtle tan pair or a vibrant animal print to rival any exotic country, Gunnel’s Zuecos has them all. Gunnel Bergman’s clogs have become so popular she now sells them wholesale all over the world and to individual clients through her website. And it’s not just the ladies who can enjoy these fun, comfortable shoes, men can be transported back to their youth, and children can experience what mummy and daddy used to wear back in the day. There really is a pair for all occasions. Don’t believe me? Visit the store and see for yourself! C/ Dublin 21, Poligono Industrial San Pedro Alcantara
