GREY GOOSE IS CONSIDERED WORLD’S BEST VODKA

Grey Goose vodka has been recognized as No. 1 vodka* by the most prestigious international institutions Grey Goose Vodka, world’s favourite luxury vodka**, is created with one goal – to be the world’s best tasting vodka. Grey Goose is the vodka chosen for the most important and glamorous international events, such as Cannes, Oscars, Golden Globes and the Baftas film festivals. Made in Cognac, France, home to the world’s most respected experts in spirits making, Grey Goose vodka benefits from the region’s rich history of creating luxury foods, wines and spirits. The Maître de Chai (cellar master) for Grey Goose vodka ensures that every element of its production is of the highest quality. He selects 100% of the finest French wheat, the same wheat used to create delicious French pastries, and employs an exclusive fivestep distillation process to concentrate its exceptional flavor. Pure spring water naturally filtered through Champagne limestone is then blended with the spirit. Only when the spirit has reached its optimal taste is the maître de chai truly satisfied. Grey Goose vodka is lush, smooth and rounded and melts in the mouth with a long-lasting, satisfying finish.

Grey Goose Cosmopolitan Method Combine 3 parts of Grey Goose vodka, ½ part of Cointreau, ½ part of cranberry juice and a squeeze of lime from ½ lime into a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake and strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with an orange twist.

*Awarded as “The Number One Vodka” by The Luxury Institute in 2007 **Honored as “The world’s best tasting Vodka” by Beverage Institute of Chicago in 1998.

Nº1

DOLPHIN TALE

Dolphin Tale is inspired by the true story of Winter, a young dolphin who is caught in a crab trap, severely damaging her tail. Saved by elevenyear-old Sawyer, Winter is transported to the Clear Water Marine Hospital. Although her chances of survival are slim, Sawyer never gives up hope and rallies his friends, family and a pioneering doctor, Morgan Freeman, to create a prosthetic limb to aid the dolphin’s survival. An inspirational film ideal for all the family to enjoy.

I DON’T KNOW HOW SHE DOES IT

Nº2

Based on the novel by Allison Pearson, I Don’t Know How She Does It, tells the story of a financial executive who strives to balance her high power job with the daily demands of family life. Sarah Jessica Parker stars as Kate Reddy who by day works for a Boston based financial management firm and by night is a devoted mother and wife to her two children, and recently out-of-work husband, Richard. With the help of best friend Allison (played by Christina Hendricks), Kate manages to perfect the balancing act until a new account increases her workload and Richard is offered the job of his dreams. Complicating matters even further, Kate struggles to ignore her handsome new colleague Jack (Pierce Brosnan), could the temptation prove to be too much?

Nº4

THE AFFAIR BY LEE CHILD

New York Times best-selling author Lee Child returns with The Affair, taking you back to 1997 and the event that alters the course of Jack Reacher’s life. When a woman has her throat cut behind a bar in Carter Crossing, Mississippi, along the road from an army base, questions arise as to whether the killer is a local or a soldier. The county sheriff’s search is going nowhere and Jack Reacher, a major in the military police, is sent undercover. This action-packed, adrenaline pumping thriller serves as a prequel to Child’s previous novel, Killing Floor and marks a major turning point in Reacher’s career. Be prepared for the coolest, sexiest and most gripping thriller to be released this year.

Nº3

Arriving in stores on September 20, the album is the sequel to Blige’s 1994 iconic LP produced by P Diddy – My Life. Her latest release presents the classic sounds of Mary J Blige united with a variety of collaborators including Kanye West, Swiss Beatz and Stargate.

LET THE BATTLE COMMENCE!

Nº6

The Pac is back! This September sees the release of Pac-Man & Galaga Dimensions for Nintendo 3DS, including two new action-packed games: Pac-Man Tilt and Galaga 3D Impact. Pac Man Tilt utilises the tilt functionality of the Nintendo 3DS whilst the two screens offer two ways to control your Pac Man. Galaga 3D Impact takes the action beyond the screen, as the deep space battlefield expands into a new direction. Enemies will appear before your very eyes as you fly through explosions and dodge approaching meteors.

UNBROKEN BY DEMI LOVATO

WHAT’S YOUR NUMBER?

When Ally (Anna Faris) comes across an article stating that women who have had more than 20 lovers will never find Mr. Right, the thought of being alone forever is too much so she goes on a mission to find her best “ex.” Assisted by her handsome next door neighbour Colin (Chris Evans), Ally revisits all her previous partners in the hope of finding her true love.

Disney Channel alumni, Demi Lovato has successfully bounced back from a stint in rehab and is now releasing her highly-anticipated third album, Unbroken. Lovato described the release as a soulful and R&B inspired sound and cited her inspirations as Keri Hilson and Rihanna. Unbroken will be available from September 20 2011.

Nº8 63rd PRIMETIME EMMY AWARDS

Nº9

MISS UNIVERSE

The 60th anniversary of the Miss Universe pageant takes place this year in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Don’t miss the two house extravaganza, full of evening gowns, swimwear and the repetitive desire for world peace. One billion people are expected to tune in on September 12 to watch a young hopeful take the crown. Currently, Miss China, 24-year-old Luo Zilin, is the favourite to win, but don’t forget to watch out for 22-yearold Paula Guillo, our very own Miss Spain!

Nº10

This month, don’t miss the 63rd annual primetime Emmys, which celebrate the best that television entertainment has to offer. A collection of familiar faces will grace our screens in September, including host, Jane Lynch and the cast of Mad Men and Modern Family along with a fair share of Emmy virgins striving for the coveted recognition. Over half of this year’s nominees in the Drama and Comedy categories are newbies such as The Big Bang Theory and Boardwalk Empire, with the latter being nominated in over 10 categories. Other front runners include American Idol, Saturday Night Live, Glee and Downton Abbey.

ABDUCTION

Abduction stars Twilight sensation Taylor Lautner as Nathan Price, a teenager whose concerns that he is living a lie come true when he finds photos of himself as a child on a missing persons’ website. As he attempts to piece together his identity, Nathan realises that the hidden truth is more dangerous and enigmatic than he ever could have imagined. With his neighbour Karen (Lily Collins), as his only confidant, the pair must run from an army of assassins as they fight for their lives in a race against time.

LIST NTICS Society Marbella brings you all the gossip and glamour straight from Hollywood

Every cloud has a silver lining, well if your name is Cheryl Cole. Despite being dropped from the USA’s newest reality television series, and losing her BFF Simon Cowell, things are looking up for Cheryl as she has scored a part in Jennifer Lopez and Cameron Diaz’s new movie, What To Expect When You Are Expecting. Although acting is a new direction for Cheryl, she might not need much help in this role as she is playing a judge on an X Factor-style television show. Could this possibly be a jibe at ex-boss Simon Cowell? Or just a statement showing the world that she can crack Hollywood on her own?

By Christie Holland

Miranda Cosgrove has post-

poned her US tour due to a broken ankle, which she sustained when her tour bus crashed into a tractor trailer in Illinois on route to Kansas. Five passengers were onboard at the time of the accident, and the driver and Cosgrove’s mother were both badly injured. As a result, the 18-year-old singer has delayed her “Dancing Crazy” summer tour until further notice. Society Marbella wishes Miranda and the other passengers a speedy recovery and hopes she is back on the road soon.

Renée Zellweger better get ready to pile on the pounds, and before you ask, no she isn’t pregnant! Working Title Films has confirmed that a third Bridget Jones film is in the pipeline. The author of the previous two novels, Helen Fielding, announced that she is working on the book and a script for the third installment, which will see Bridget, who is now in her 40s attempt to have a baby. Zellweger’s co-star Colin Firth excited fans when he spilt the details, “I can tell you that Bridget and Mark can’t have children, I think that is the way it goes. So then she makes the huge mistake of going back to Daniel Cleaver for long enough to get pregnant. And I think he dumps her, and she’s left stranded, and guess who comes back to rescue her?” I think we can guess! Hurry up and get finalising the script Helen, we can’t wait to laugh and cry with Bridget on her next adventure.. 20

It seems like only days ago that Hilary Duff was filling our screens as Disney Channel’s Lizzie Mcguire, but now she is all grown up and ready to welcome a baby into her life! On the celebration of her first wedding anniversary to husband, Mike Comrie, the 23-year-old actress announced she is expecting her first child. Hilary announced the happy news on her blog, saying, “I can’t believe it has already been a year, time really flies when you’re having fun! We also want to share the exciting news that…BABY MAKES THREE! We are extremely happy and ready to start this new chapter of our lives.” Congratulations Hilary! Following the release of the official pictures from the much awaited American X Factor, veteran diva Paula Abdul has cemented her difficult-to-please status with a list of prima donna requests. Abdul apparently keeps her assistants busy by demanding they must carry a tape recorder with them at all times, as Paula’s doesn’t trust her own conversations! Paula also prefers to be called warrior, savoir or gift rather than her own name and ensures that any mention of her on television is recorded on a DVD. Seems like Miss Abdul is giving Mariah Carey a run for her money in the quest to be Hollywood’s number one diva.

Tina Fey has welcomed a new

addition to her family; Penelope Athena is Tina and husband Jeffrey Richard’s second daughter. The couple already has a five-year-old daughter Alice, who Tina declared was extremely excited about having a new sibling. The 30 Rock star publically announced she was expecting in May on The Oprah Winfrey Show and has since revealed that her second pregnancy was easy, but that she did debate whether to put her career on hold to have another child. “My husband and I felt that rather than risk having 30 Rock end in several years and feeling like part of our family was missing that we were going to make our family a priority,” she announced earlier this year.

Prince Michael, Paris and Blanket have announced that they will attend the tribute concert in memory of their father Michael Jackson in Wales this October, even though their uncles Jermaine and Randy Jackson are against it. Michael and his siblings are said to be, “extremely excited and hope to have the opportunity to contribute in some way by making a speech,” at the concert, which will reportedly feature tributes by Christina Aguilera and Leona Lewis. Jermaine and Randy not only have concerns about the children attending the concert but are also worried about the timing of the event, which they consider “inappropriate”. The tribute concert is due to take place during the involuntary manslaughter trial of Dr. Conrad Murray. It is understandable that Jermaine and Randy wish to protect the children considering the turbulent past few years, but let’s hope Michael’s kids are allowed to honour his memory and be present at this important celebration of his life.

ONE TO WATCH! Elene Cassis was born and raised in New York, but her route into fashion was less than conventional. Following the tragic death of her father, Elene, a professional gymnast for over 10 years and former membership co-ordinator for a real estate association, had an epiphany and decided to design her own fashion line. In order to take the leap into the fashion industry she applied to the prestigious Parsons School of Design. By graduating at the top of her class she cemented her place as one of the hottest new designers to watch.

If they are hooking up or

breaking up, we know ab

out it!

Ex Saved by the Bell actor MarkPaul Gosselaur is engaged, despite his divorce to ex-wife Lisa Ann Russel only being finalised in May. Gosselaur presented his new fiancée, advertising executive Catriona McGinn with a five-carat, cushion-cut diamond ring custom designed by his friend and jeweller, Neil Lane. Lane told People Magazine, “He couldn’t wait to propose. He was so excited to have found the woman of his dreams.” Congratulations to the new couple. Wedding bells are ringing for Dancing with the Stars co-host Brooke Burke and actor David Charvet, who married in St Barts after a five-year engagement. The couple whose two children were present when the couple tied the knot on a boat announced the news via Twitter, writing, “Sending my 1st good morning tweet as Mrs. Charvet. It’s true, we finally did it with love and certainty. OMG, I am a married woman!!! Sorry to be so secretive, but we REALLY needed a private moment just for us for all the right reasons. Love you guys xoxo.”

Each month Society Marbella shares a secret with you. It may be the freshest music artist, an exciting new designer or the next A-list actress, but whoever it is you know they are one to watch. As the fashion season is ahead of us, this month, Society Marbella has its eyes on ELENE CASSIS. Only a month after leaving Parsons, Elene Fashions Inc. was established and she launched her first collection – a blend of classic styles and modern pieces. Fast forward two years and Elene is a rising star in the cut-throat fashion world; this status was confirmed when she won The Fashion Group International’s Rising Star Award earlier this year. Renowned for the use of black and white in her designs, Elene’s collections have received comparisons to the fashion aesthetic of Jackie O.

Elene’s collections can be found in Neiman Marcus and in almost 100 other notable specialty stores worldwide. Colour will make a dramatic appearance on the catwalk for her newest collection, with aqua sea foam and salmon tones defining the elegance of Elene’s most recent work. Her signature black and white colour palette will once again be noticeable when Elene presents her spring 2012 collection on September 15 at 6pm at the Lincoln Centre for the Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week.

Lowe Everything you ever needed to know about the young and the restless model

Aged just 22, Daisy Lowe is one of the UK’s rising stars. She’s been fortunate enough to model for the majority of the biggest names in fashion, which is no surprise as her ability to adapt to different labels and styles is why she is becoming so in demand. Daisy Rebecca Lowe British model Born January 27, 1989 From Primrose Hill, London

As a child she believed her father was her mother’s ex-husband Bronner Lowe, but when she found out that neither Bronner or Pearl shared her O-type blood, she confronted her mother, and a paternity test revealed that her godfather, Bush singer/guitarist and husband of Gwen Stefani, Gavin Rossdale, was in fact her biological father. * She grew up in Primrose Hill, North London, and studied at South Hampstead High School, whose previous alumnae include Helena Bonham Carter and Sir Ridley Scott’s daughter Jordan. She lived part of her school years with her grandparents in order to continue her education while her mother moved to Hampshire. * Daisy began modelling at a very young age. From the tender age of 12, she appeared in a few amateur photoshoots. She was ap-

proached by a talent scout in Camden Town, and as a result, signed with Select, a London modelling agency. * In 2005, she booked her first print ad for Agent Provocateur, only for it to be taken away from her by none other than supermodel Kate Moss, but having her title taken from her by such an iconic model was credit to how good she was, and cemented her status as one of the greatest models of the moment. She was pipped to the post by Maggie Gyllenhaal in 2007, but finally regained her title in 2008. * Aged 17, Daisy appeared in a feature in Italian Vogue, shot by renowned photographer Steve Klein. Six months later, she modelled for the Urban Outfitters catalogue, appeared in French Connection print advertisements and was profiled in Harper’s Bazaar magazine. * 2007 was an important year for Daisy. Not only did she appear in Italian Vogue for a second time, she was fea-

tured in an editorial in Jane magazine alongside fellow model and socialite Lydia Hearst-Shaw, posed nude on the cover of i-D magazine with her then-partner, Will Cameron from the band Blondelle, and booked her very first cover in French Revue de Modes. Also, Mario Testino, who was the official photographer for William and Kate’s wedding, photographed her for a British Vogue editorial. * On the runway, Lowe has walked for designers such as PPQ, Henry Holland, Vivienne Westwood and Samantha Ronson, sister of legendary DJ Mark Ronson, whom she had a brief relationship with in 2008. She has appeared on catwalks in New York, Milan and London for Topshop, Burberry, Converse, Dr. Martens, Hooch, Wheels and Doll Baby, Ben Sherman, Karen Millen, Diesel and Whistles, as well as for her mother’s recent collection of lace dresses for Peacocks. Her most credible achievement was being personally selected by Karl Lagerfeld to

model for Chanel; a tremendous opportunity to walk for one of the most prestigious fashion houses. * To date, Daisy has appeared on the cover of Tatler, Elle, GQ, Marie Claire and Vogue, among many many others, and appeared in campaigns for Marc Jacobs, Esprit and Louis Vuitton. * In 2010, Daisy became the face of the newly relaunched sixties label Biba, and began dating current Dr Who actor Matt Smith, after meeting him at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. * She recently posed nude for an eight-page spread in Playboy Magazine for their September issue, but is said to be regretting it. However, she has the full support from her grandmother, quoted saying ‘If you’ve got it, flaunt it’. Daisy has also been announced as the face of Stephen Webster’s 2011 jewellery campaign, as seen here and adorning our cover.

A haven full of tranquillity and harmony was just up my street. The retreat is nestled in the midst of nature surrounded by the Sierra de las Nieves Nature Park and Biosphere reserve. It’s hard to believe it’s only 10 minutes from the bustling town of Marbella. The sanctuary has been carefully constructed respecting and incorporating local materials as well as following the guidelines of Feng Shui. Shanti-Som is the realised dream of investor Hugo Hoofdman and Kezia Jacobsen, a certified Raja Yoga Teacher and Reiki Master with over 25 years of experience in health, beauty and holistic therapies, whose ambition was to recreate the renowned Far Eastern wellbeing retreats of Thailand in the heart of Europe. My partner, Andy and I were greeted with a refreshing welcome drink (that reminds me, I must get the recipe,) and escorted to the Asian fusion Amrita Restaurant for lunch. Under the guidance of Head Chef Ben Hayes, Shanti-Som offers balanced, healthy meals in a relaxed atmosphere. Ben only cooks with local, fresh, seasonal produce, creating flavours from around the globe. His mantra is creative cuisine. If you are not interested in the spa side, believe me it is worth a visit just for the food. After lunch we opted to chill out by the pool before enjoying a full body massage and then back to our suite. There are 14 bedrooms, each individually designed and themed, some even featuring hand painted wall murals by local artists. That evening the Chef recommended the 5 course taster menu, served under the stars in the tranquil courtyard area. This was a great experience in itself, allowing us to try dishes that we would not normally order. One word – divine. After a great night’s sleep, we decided to be more adventurous and try out the Tibetan bowl therapy with sound relaxation coach Christine Heckle. The vibrating bowls were placed on different parts of the body and although it was a strange sensation at first, I quickly fell into a deep meditative state. On the drive back, I called up my best friend and told her I had booked us in the following week for a Half Day Spa. For only €120 you receive a relaxing massage, use of the spa facilities such as the oriental steam room or sauna and a delicious healthy lunch, meaning that it doesn’t have to be a special occasion to enjoy what ShantiSom has to offer. NOURISH YOUR SKIN Renew Sun-Damaged Skin after a Blistering Summer

T

he summer season is coming to an end... and yes, we are grateful for our gorgeous tan, but how much damage has it done to our skin and is it really worth it? Many of you may have noticed a few extra wrinkles and increased pigmentation, both caused by the sun’s rays. Other symptoms of post summer sun damage include a dull and sallow skin tone, development of sun and age spots and sagging skin, all of which can add years to your appearance. So how can we get our glow back? Cosmoclinic & Isabelle’s Aesthetic and Beauty Centre offers a range of treatments from their new line Biologique Recherche, designed to leave your skin feeling instantly radiant. Created by a biologist, a physiotherapist and a doctor, Biologique Recherche has gained a

reputation for astounding effectiveness based on a clinical approach to beauty care using intentionally pure, concentrated, raw ingredients, as well as innovative and meticulous protocols and procedures. What can you expect? • Initialization Stage: During this stage the epidermis is thoroughly cleansed, its pH is balanced and the proteo-lipidic film is restored. Impurities and dead cells are gradually brought to the surface and eliminated improving the epidermis’ natural regeneration properties. After this stage, which comprises of makeup removal followed by gentle exfoliation and a mask, the skin is ready to receive the Treatment Stage Products. • Treatment Stage: This stage is the most active moment of the skin care programme. The products used contain high concentrations of botanical, marine and biological extracts designed to leave the complexion beautiful and glowing. When applied, they balance, hydrate and revitalize the epidermis. These active ingredients work progressively to improve the quality of the skin and leave the complexion radiant. The high concentration of hyaluronic acid actively reduces signs of aging whilst rebuilding the collagen and elastin fibres. The toning effect is immediate and

long-lasting: deep wrinkles are visibly smoothed, facial contours firmed, pigmentation faded and the skin appears toned and rejuvenated. Six sessions are recommended for optimum results; however you will still notice a dramatic improvement after the first treatment. DON’T LEAVE IT TOO LATE

In the aftermath of Amy Winehouse’s death many people are asking why she didn´t seek help. Director of the Camino Recovery Centre, Don Lavender gives us an insight into the truth behind addiction.

A

merican psychotherapist, Don Lavender BA M.Div., is the Programme Director of the Camino Recovery Centre. He specialises in the treatment of addiction, as well as (co-existing) conditions such as trauma, depression and anxiety disorders. Q: What exactly IS addiction? Why are people so reluctant to seek help, and what causes them to relapse? A: Addiction is a progressive illness – and a very common one at that. In any culture and in any country today, an estimated one in ten people are suffering from an addiction. This might be to a substance (drugs or alcohol), to a behaviour (sex, gambling, shopping, relationships or self-harm) or to food (over-eating, anorexia or bulimia). Latest research indicates that addictive behaviour is often rooted in trauma – the experience of a situation, event, or series of

30

events of a terrifying and overwhelming nature. As a result, an individual may repeatedly turn to a substance or type of behaviour in an attempt to comfort themselves or cope. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work. As addiction takes hold, a complete loss of self-worth, a breakdown in trust, and inevitable social isolation follow – as both the addict and his or her family are drawn into the vortex. In this sense, addiction can also be seen as an illness that affects the whole family. Amy Winehouse´s song ´Rehab´ struck a lingering chord. Saying “no, no, no” to rehab is understandable as seeking treatment still carries a certain taboo. And yet, it’s crucial to the process of recovery. There is a disproportionate level of shame and secrecy surrounding addiction. This not only inhibits an individual from seeking and receiving appropriate help, but also reinforces the unimaginable sense of shame that they already feel about themselves. Group therapy, underpinned by a 12Step programme, forms a big part of the treatment we deliver at the Camino Recovery Centre. It helps people choose a network of support to maintain abstinence from their drugs of choice.

Without support, an individual has an extremely high probability of relapse. Camino Recovery Centre Avenida las Mimosas 189, Linda Vista Baja, San Pedro de Alcantara, Marbella, 29670, Malaga, Spain. + 34 952 784228 meena@caminorecovery.com caminorecovery.com

Revolution in HaiR extensions How Advanced Hair Studio can help treat Alopecia

F

or many people, developing alopecia is extremely traumatic and life altering. If regular treatments have failed Advanced Hair Studio in Marbella may be the solution you have been looking for. Alopecia can occur at any age from birth to the late decades of life. Neve Campbell, star of the horror sequel Scream 4, revealed to the Daily Mail recently that she suffered from Alopecia Areata during her early twenties. “At 23, I developed Alopecia,” the actress said. “I was horribly overworked and going through a divorce. Also I had stalkers and started receiving threatening mail. I was so distressed by it all that my hair started falling out.” Alopecia refers to hair loss from any part of the body. There are several types of Alopecia, Areata, Totalis and Universal, the effects range from thinning hair to complete baldness. So what causes it? Anything from stress, shock, genetics, allergies, irritants, toxins, burns, injuries to infections. Certain medications can also be a contributor, (especially anabolic steroids), chronic kidney failure, radiation, and chemotherapy can cause hair to fall out. Sometimes hair loss may be due to a vitamin A overdose, iron deficiency anaemia, a malfunctioning thyroid gland, fever, or pregnancy.

Having treated over half a million people around the world with hair loss, their unique combination of breakthrough technology and outstanding customer service have seen them grow into one of the world’s largest hair restoration companies, with approximately 100 studios worldwide. Clients with alopecia can visit the clinic for a discreet, free, no-obligation hair check. A qualified consultant will analyse the scalp and hair to determine the best course of action.

WORKOUT FOR

UP CLOSE & PERSONAL

YOUR BODY TYPE Heidi Klum is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful women in the world. However, she has to work hard to maintain her physique. Here, David Kirsch, her personal trainer, shares his fitness philosophy and key moves to get into shape.

APPLE SHAPE

The apple shape is heavier up top so you should focus on lighter weights so you tone and don’t bulk up. It is important to work on cardio sculpting moves, keeping the weights low and the repetitions high. Recommended moves: Push-ups on a stability ball, stability ball knee tucks and shadow boxing.

PEAR SHAPE

Anyone with a pear shape should worry about putting on weight around their hips and butt. To tone, we want to tighten and lift. People with this shape should stay away from traditional squats and all forms of cycling so they don’t bulk up their quads. Recommended moves: Sumo lunges, platypus walk and plié toe squats.

STICK SHAPE

The stick shape is leaner than the other body types and should focus on adding meat and muscle to their bones. I would suggest that you target your abs, arms and butt. Recommended moves: Lunges, bent leg deadlifts, push-ups and stability ball planks.

33

UP CLOSE & PERSONAL

MOVE DESCRIPTIONS

Push-ups on a stability ball 1.Place your tummy on the stability ball and palms on the floor in front of the ball. Walk your hands forward as you slide your torso forward on the ball, until you come into a push-up position with your thighs, shins, or balls of your feet on the ball. Place your palms on the floor under your chest. Make sure your abs are tight and back is flat. Do not allow your hips to sink downwards. 2. Bend your elbows out to the sides as you bring your face and chest towards the floor. Exhale as you extend your elbows and push up to the starting position. Note: Placing your thighs on the ball is the least challenging option, your shins slightly more challenging, and the balls of your feet or your toes the most challenging.

Plié squats 1. Start with your feet wider than shoulder-width distance apart and turn your toes out. Keep your weight in your heels. 2. Keeping your weight in your heels and your knees turned out, squat down and up. * Note: Tuck your pelvis in, and stick your butt out. The more you engage, the more you’ll shape that booty. Advanced modification: Plié toe squats. Once you’ve mastered the plié squat, turn it up lifting your heels up as you squat. This puts greater emphasis on your inner thighs, butt and core.

Lunges Stability ball knee tucks 1. From the push-up position, bend your knees and bring them in towards your chest. Extend your legs as you push the ball back to the starting position. Keep your abs tight the entire time. 2. Bring your knees in towards your right armpit. Extend your legs as you push the ball back to the starting position. Keep your abs tight the entire time. 3. Bring your knees in toward your left armpit. Extend your legs as you push the ball back to the starting position. Keep your abs tight the entire time.

Shadow boxing 1. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, your knees soft and your core engaged. Punch across your body, fifteen reps on each side. 2. For upper cuts, start with your arms bent in a 90-degree angle. Punch upwards across your chest. * Note: Add hand weight to pump up the intensity.

Sumo lunges 1. Stand with your legs shoulder length apart. 2. Lift your right leg from the knee and move it in a circular roundhouse. 3. Land out to the side, wider than you started and immediately squat down, imitating a real sumo wrestler. 4. As you come out of the squat, lift your right leg and kick out, leading with your heel. * Note: Each element should flow smoothly into the next. There are no breaks in a sumo lunge!

Platypus walk

1. Start in a plié squat position, with your hands behind your head and your thighs parallel to the ground. 2. Waddle forward. Right foot in front of your left, stay engaged in that plié squat. Now reverse… * Note: Make sure your knees stay out and your weight stays back in your heels throughout the movement.

1. Start with your heels under the shoulders, chest-width apart. 2. Your front heel is the anchor for a lunge. Bend your knee to a perfect right angle. Note: The perfect lunge will give you two right angles. Do not allow your knee to pass your toes.

Bent leg deadlifts 1. Holding a body bar, dumbbells or medicine ball, stand in your start position, with your legs shoulder width apart. 2. Hinge at the waist. As you bend forward, soften your knees and stick your butt out. Modification: If you’re feeling shaky, hold the back of a chair or the edge of a table for balance. Modification: If you’re feeling great, try lifting your alternate leg as you go down.

Push-ups 1. To do a perfect push-up, start out in front of a mirror so you can check your alignment. Are your hands properly aligned? They should be directly under your shoulder and line up with your chest. Make sure your core is nice and tight and your shoulders and neck are relaxed. 2. Visualise what you’re trying to accomplish. You’re going to use your triceps to help execute the perfect push-up, so make sure you feel them engage. Your body from shoulder to foot should be tight and even as you lower your body.

Stability ball planks 1. Place your palms against the top of your stability ball. 2. Extend your legs and balance on the balls of your feet so that your body makes a 45-degree angle with the floor. Stretch through the crown of your head and reach through the back of your heels. Hold for 15 seconds at first, but work your way towards holding for a full minute. * Note: The closer together you place your feet, the more challenging this exercise becomes.

NUTRITION Now, all of the exercises in the world won’t give you that buff body if you are not eating and hydrating properly. It is important for all body types to eat well in order to lose weight – I would recommend five small meals a day including lean protein, healthy carbohydrates like beans

34

and quinoa, and lots of vegetables. It is especially important for the stick body shape to bump up the amount of protein and healthy carbs they are eating to help add muscle. Try my new KIRSCHBAR for breakfast or lunch. Or eat half before a workout and the other half after.

THE SKINNY ON

Fashion Week T

By Christie Holland

his month Society Marbella delves into the world of fashion, presenting you with all the gossip from the catwalk, to backstage and to the front row as the spring/summer 2012 collections are revealed in the four fashion capitals of the world.

First stop…

THE BIG APPLE

TOUCH DOWN

on UK ground… Following the big move last year to the Lincoln Centre complex, New York Fashion Week (which attracts over 100,000 attendees) is back with a bang from September 8-15. Kicking off the fashion season, designers will gather from around the world to exhibit their spring/summer 2011 collections. This month, the Big Apple goes out of its way to welcome media moguls and Hollywood movie stars who come to see, or be seen, at one of the planet’s most celebrated fashion events. Behind the scenes, a handful of lucky interns from fashion schools, such as FIT or Parsons School of Design, jump at the chance to work as volunteers and gain a true insight into the cut-throat world of fashion. It’s not only the designers you need to keep your eyes peeled for, supermodels strive to make their debut at New York Fashion Week – one to watch this season is Dafne Cejas. The 17-year-old Argentinian came onto the scene last season for a world exclusive with Givenchy. Now she’s making her mark on New York Fashion Week and is destined to be the breakout star of the season.

44

London Fashion Week puts British design firmly on the map, and this year one of the most exciting prospects is Tom Ford’s presentation of his newest collection. The designer has previously held intimate affairs to reveal his collections, but this is the first time he will be included in the official London Fashion Week schedule. With Tom Ford making such a bold statement other designers such as Matthew Williamson, Jonathan Saunders and Giles Deacon, who previously showcased in New York and Paris, are following suit and returning to the UK capital. On the contrary, this will be the first time following 60 successive shows that Betty Jackson will not be showcasing in Britain. The Betty Jackson label has been a steady presence over three tumultuous decades in British fashion; while other brands have been sold, gone bankrupt or jumped ship to fashion weeks abroad, Jackson has stuck to her roots and supported the British cause. Fortunately, Jackson has confirmed that she is not retiring just taking a well-earned gap year from the London catwalk.

Fact file Where: London, UK When: September 16-21 Official sponsor: Canon Highlight: Tom Ford making his debut at London Fashion Week is an event not to be missed Who to watch: Alice Lee

Next stop...

MILAN

Milan Fashion Week is where the commercial meets the editorial. Italian designers have successfully cornered the market for wearable but luxurious clothing. An extensive collection of the most established brands in the world choose to do it the Italian way, and the likes of Roberto Cavalli, Prada and Versace will be taking to the Milan catwalk this season. Sneaking into the Italian fashion shows is renowned to be the most difficult of the bunch, but don’t let that stop you enjoying the city in September. Get a piece of the action over cappuccino and biscotti on the pedestrianised Via Della Spiga, where you can admire the theatrical shop windows and watch the cosmopolitan city’s beautiful people using the streets of Milan as their catwalk.

Fact file Where: Milan, Italy When: September 21-27 Official sponsor: Canon Highlight: Prada, always predicting and presenting the trends ahead Who to watch: Don’t miss John Richmond

The grand FINALE… Paris is the culmination of the fashion season, and the spring 2012 presentation will mark Christian Dior’s first ready-towear collection without the legendary John Galliano at the helm. All eyes will be on the runway following the eclectic and misunderstood Dior haute couture show in July, just two months after Mr. Galliano’s infamous dismissal. No doubt the A-listers will be lined up to view the latest masterpieces from Chanel, with Gossip Girl’s Blake Lively, Karl Lagerfeld’s latest muse, taking to the front row. It is no secret that Lagerfeld was always a great admirer of the late Amy Winehouse and

following her tragic death could beehives and black eyeliner emerge within the show as a tribute to the young talent that was lost? One thing is certain, Paris always attracts the most fashion-savvy celebrities, who come hoping to source the ultimate red carpet ensemble from the likes of Elie Saab or Valentino. This year will be no different, particularly as Sarah Burton will reveal her latest collection for Alexander McQueen, following the royal wedding and her presentation of “that” dress. The world is still in awe of the Duchess and will be waiting in anticipation to see Sarah Burton’s most recent vision.

Fact file Where: Paris, France When: September 22 – October 5 Official sponsors: Canon and Mercedes-Benz Highlight: Christian Dior Who to watch: Gareth Pugh, always visionary, spontaneous and exciting

LIVINGSTONE ESTATES L

ivingstone Estates has a selection of beautiful properties for sale and to rent on the Costa del Sol. We had the pleasure of meeting the owner of the company, Vagn Trend Poulsen to talk to him about the real estate sector here in Marbella.

Interview by Laura-Jane Bruce VTP: The climate and lifestyle are the most popular reasons for moving to the Costa del Sol. Also, on this part of the coast, you don’t have to speak the language to live here, so it is easy to adjust. The locals are also really friendly; their Latin roots make Spanish people so welcoming and open. Plus, once the new harbour has been developed, it will be sure to attract even more tourists and residents. L-JB: Is there a particular time of the year that is busiest for real estate? VTP: For rentals, I would say the summer season and Christmas are busiest, especially as we offer a Property Management Division – a cleaning and repairs service to take care of all of your needs and problems. The buying side of the company is generally steady throughout the whole year. L-JB: Tell us a little bit about your background.

L-JB: Which area of the market do you think is the most buoyant?

L-JB: What are the positives for buying real estate on the Costa del Sol?

VTP: I started my business 15 years ago. Initially, I built a house in Sierra Blanca and began building developments beachfront which are now well known as Torre Bermeja and Cabo Bermejo. The main company, VTP group is more focused on constructing developments, other projects include Tikitano Restaurant which is located infront of Torre Bermeja on the beach and near to our office.

VTP: In the summer, holiday rentals are the most popular. This season, we’ve also seen an increase in groups holidaying together and renting three or four properties. Also, a lot of people rent for the first few years to see if they like the area, and then go on to purchase the property.

VTP: The great value of the properties is the most positive reason for choosing to reside here. The prices per square metre in the Marbella area are incredibly low compared to other parts of Spain now, so it makes perfect sense to buy or rent a property in the area.

L-JB: What do you think attracts people to Marbella?

LIVINGSTONE ESTATES Tel: 952 806 417 info@livingstone-estates.com www.livingstone-estates.com

L-JB: Why did you choose to open your office in Estepona? VTP: Most of the sites that we are developing are in Estepona, so it made sense to base the Livingstone Estates office here. It means we can also have a close affiliation with all of our clients being so near to them. L-JB: What do you think of the current real estate climate now that the recession has resided? VTP: It’s great that the market is slowly improving. Obviously, it’s not going to fix itself overnight, but the gradual increase is very promising. It has made people much more cautious; clients are more inclined to “do their homework” and research all the Spanish laws and regulations.

EXPECT THE EXCEPTIONAL L

ast month, SOCIETY MARBELLA was fortunate enough to photograph some of the projects created by John May of Quay Property Group. While this was incredibly interesting and awe inspiring, we wanted to find out more about the man behind it all. Over a few G&Ts, we got to the bottom of how John works, what to expect when you choose Quay Property Group and what his mantra of “expect the exceptional” really means.

L-JB: How long have you lived here? Why did you choose Marbella to reside? JM: I have lived in Marbella for five and a half years. It offered me the perfect chance to combine business and lifestyle. The property market here is so diverse, which provides many exciting building opportunities, from new build projects to complete refurbishments. The latter has become extremely popular in the last few years since the credit crunch; people can’t necessarily afford to move house, so they choose to completely transform their current property. Also, the mix of people here is so dynamic and constantly changing, which gives me the potential to be creative.

50

my job so much! Even though I am the managing director of Quay Property Group, I take pleasure in visiting each site daily and being available to my clients 24/7; I am very hands on with all of my assignments. I work hard to ensure my clients have 100 percent trust in Quay to deliver their project to the highest standards, whether it’s a restaurant or someone’s dream home, this is very important to me. Also, not all of my clients are based in Marbella full time, so I need to be flexible and regularly travel to the UK for meetings. Recently, I drove to Zurich to meet a client, and I was told by the car hire company that I set the record for the most amount of miles travelled in a three-day hire! L-JB: What projects are you currently working on?

L-JB: How long has Quay Property Group been operating, and what is your involvement?

JM: I have an exciting project in El Madronal that was featured in last month’s issue of SOCIETY MARBELLA. It’s due for completion in late autumn 2012, and includes a full intelligent system, home cinema room and a gym with an indoor pool. I also have a restaurant in Puerto Banús that is due to be completed in the next couple of weeks. Last month, I handed over the front line beach villa in Puerto Banús that was also featured in last issue of SOCIETY MARBELLA. This was completed to the very highest specifications and included two cinema areas with screens dropping from the ceilings remotely via an iPhone! I also have three new exciting projects in the pipeline, so watch this space!

JM: Quay Property Group has been operating since 2007. It doesn’t seem that long, probably because I love

L-JB: What do you enjoy most about developing a project?

JM: I was actually a bricklayer by trade before moving onto building management. Quay Property Group is a design and build contractor; I work closely with my clients to design their project from initial drafts on paper to full architectural plans. I also handle all licensing for the client, which takes away all the stresses involved in contraction. Design is what I enjoy most. In a recently completed project in Las Brisas, I built a contemporary gel fireplace suspended from the ceiling. Technology is now an important part of my work. I specialise in full home automation, which allows my customers to control their home from a remote device, such as an iPhone or iPad; they don’t even need to be in Marbella to control it – it’s completely remote! You can turn on the hot water and air conditioning before your arrival in Marbella. I have to be constantly aware of all the new products and materials available, in order to incorporate them into my designs, which is important as technology is constantly evolving. L-JB: What does “expect the exceptional” mean to you? JM: Expect the exceptional is a term I use to get my customers to understand the level of design, craftsmanship and customer care I apply to every job I’m involved with. I have a reputation for incredibly high standards. At hand over my clients regularly say they never dreamt their project would look so stunning. They even tell me to use them as a reference.

HAVE YOU HAD AN

I

ACCIDENT ON YOUR WAY TO WORK?

t has become more popular than ever to live in an apartment or semidetached house on the outskirts of town or in a villa near the beach. With more and more people living further away from their place of work, this increases the chances of accidents whilst commuting. Any kind of accident on your way to work – known as an “in itinere accident”- could be considered a labour accident depending on the place where the incident occurred. The High Court has expanded on the definition of such an “in itinere” accident adding that the stairs of the doorway of a block of flats would be included as part of the way that the employee must travel to get to work. This means that a fall down the stairs would still be covered and considered as a labour accident. The explanation given by the High Court is that the doorway of a block of flats is a free space access for all the neighbours and does not belong to the private and personal space that is the employee’s home. According to the latest rulings, the key point is that when an employee initiates the descent of the mentioned

stairs he has started his way to work through a common and free space. These pronouncements may cause a lot of controversies as individuals may argue what would happen if the accident occurred on the stairs of the house? Sadly, the incident would not be considered as a labour accident in this situation because this kind of home is considered a private property and the entrance would be restricted to other people. But is this fair coverage for all employees? Though the High Court recognises that the concept of an address can be constituted by a house or a flat, only in this last case would there exist common areas that can be used by all the owners. And it is in these areas - not private ones - where it could be considered a work accident. But what are the advantages of considering an accident as labour related? The main advantage is that the next day before the employee’s sick leave, the Social Security will pay 75 percent of the employee’s salary. Moreover, the applicable Collective Bargain Agreement may foresee that the employer has to

pay the difference of up to 100 percent of the employee’s salary. On the other hand, if the accident is considered as non-labour the amount the employee would receive would be inferior to the ones established for a labour accident. For example, the general rule is that from the first to the third day, the employee would not receive any salary and that from the fourth to the 15th day, the employer would pay only 60 percent of the employee’s salary – unless the applicable Collective Bargain Agreement specifically determines to pay 100 percent of the employee’s salary. In the event that you have any future accident on your way to work, be aware of the enormous differences regarding the pay out you will receive depending on the classification of the accident as labour or non-labour. It is always advised to contact a legal representative to ensure that your rights are met, and as head of the labour department I can recommend Lexland Abogados as qualified multi-lingual professionals.

MARBELLA

CARPETS L

ast month, SOCIETY MARBELLA caught up with entrepreneur and owner of Marbella Carpets, Jeff Meurs. One Friday afternoon, we took the time out of the sweltering heat to visit Jeff in his showroom (beautifully air-conditioned I might add) to chat with him about how he started in this business, how these pieces of art are created and why some of the best master weavers supply carpets exclusively to his store in Spain.

L-JB: How did you originally start working in the carpet industry? JM: Originally, it was a bit of a mistake. I actually studied to be an accountant in Belgium, where I am originally from, and I was asked to help out in one of the Grutman’s carpet shops. Francine Grutman and her family are old friends, and used to own and run six carpets shops in Belgium, and two on the Costa del Sol. After working in one of their stores in Belgium for the weekend, I was offered a contract and worked my way up from a sales assistant to store manager. Finally, I franchised one of the six Grutman shops in Belgium, and did so for seven years. I’ve now worked in this business for over 35 years, and I have never looked back once. L-JB: Did the experience of working your way up through the ranks help you become a better sales person? JM: Yes, but not only that, it helped me learn how to run and develop the franchised store, as I was able to meet thousands of different sources and decide which were viable. L-JB: Why did you choose Marbella as the location for your business? JM: Well, the location of Marbella Carpets, just 800m away from the five-star Marbella Club Hotel, is where one of the original

60

Grutman carpet shops used to be. When i was offered to work in Marbella, I jumped at the chance to experience an adventure of a lifetime, and when Francine Grutman closed her shops, I took the opportunity to continue this business where the Grutman shop in Marbella was located for over 20 years. L-JB: What services does Marbella Carpets offer? JM: We offer everything from small rugs to substantial carpets for villas, as well as installation of wall-to-wall carpets and staircases by professional carpet fitters from the UK. Most carpet shops only stock ranges for apartments, but I adapted my collection to contain carpets for all sizes of homes. Whether you are looking for a fine Persian rug to liven up your entrance, contemporary carpets to completely redecorate your house or a one-of-a-kind statement fashion piece, we have everything either in store or we can source it for you through our global network of contacts. We offer all types of advice; preferring to give you the time to decide exactly what you need, meanwhile offering you a nice warm coffee, a fresh glass of water, or why not... champagne. Also, some carpets will look different in the shop than in your house, so for this reason we let clients choose a range of carpets and take them to their desired location to see exactly what they are going to look like and then make an informed decision.

EASY LIVING

L-JB: What is so appealing about working in this trade? JM: It’s not simply working with carpets that I love; the business I work in is similar to the culture of boutique antiques, fine art or classic music. The carpets are pieces of art because a substantial amount of time, effort and skill goes into making them. L-JB: For example, how long does a contemporary Nepalese rug take to create from start to finish? JM: Depending on the size and detail of the carpet, it typically takes around five months from the initial design stage to the finished product. This is because they are all hand-made using exclusive materials and designs. We also act as interior designers, advising on the types of colours and patterns to suit your personal style. L-JB: Tell us about the exclusive carpets you have in store. JM: We are fortunate enough to house carpets by the best master weavers in the world. For example, this first carpet (pictured above left) is designed by M. Jamshidi, the world number one in carpet art. None of my carpet colleagues throughout Spain have the rights to showcase this carpet in their shop, so it is exclusive to Marbella. It took eight years, three people and more than 10 million

knots to finish this 6 square-meter masterpiece. This second carpet (pictured right) designed by world number two master weaver Zabye, took three people six years to create, and we are one of only three stores in Europe that can stock it. Carpets such as these are investment pieces, like contemporary paintings and art.

job to him; it’s still his hobby and he loves every moment of it. Marbella Carpets Edificio Casablanca, Bulevar Principle Alfonso von Hohenlohe, 29602 Marbella Tel. 952 822 148 marbellacarpets.com

L-JB: What makes you different to other carpet shops? JM: Our carpets span a vast range to suit all budgets, from simple pieces to iconic and elaborate designs. Some sell in store for €500, while others are sold at €350 thousand, so we have something for everyone. As the world modernised, I recognised that carpets needed to follow suit, so I researched and developed a contemporary section that is dedicated to new carpets using antique colours and designs, which look fantastic in modern spaces. I also design pieces myself. The materials we use in Marbella Carpets are also different to many other chain retail companies. All of our carpets are handmade using natural silks, pure wool, and inventive materials such as bamboo and nettle silk to create different textures and contrasting colours. Also, my passion for this beautiful art is stronger than ever, even after 35 years in the field. As we had taken up far too much of Jeff’s valuable time, we left him with his clients, and it was clear to see it is more than just a

The Evolution of

The Mah Jong

T

his year, leading interior design house Roche Bobois celebrates the 40th anniversary of one of their most famous creations, the Mah Jong. In 1971, the designer Hans Hopfer created the Mah Jong commissioned by Roche Bobois. The Mah Jong is a sofa with no limits. Based on total freedom of function and form, this sofa allows limitless options of composition, it can be an armchair, a corner sofa, a chaise longue or even a bed. The design comprises of 3 basic modules that can be stacked, aligned or grouped

as one wishes. The seat cushion, straight back and corner piece allow the client to build up the modules and construct a configuration of their choice. The segments can be changed and reworked to form a variety of layouts ideal for creating any social setting desired - a corner sofa for a formal occasion, a relaxing chaise longue or a luxurious bed perfect for that romantic evening in. The ingenious design encourages experimentation and breaks the rules of formal living, reflecting the non-conformist era

in which it was born. The Mah Jong is handmade in a dedicated workshop in Italy using processes and techniques comparable to those of the “Haute Couture” fashion industry. Each component is individually hand-stitched using a method similar to that of mattress-making, and the utmost attention is paid to detailing. By virtue of the exclusive fabrics used for the upholstering and the unique nature of each composition, every Mah Jong becomes a one-of-a-kind creation. Over the years, Roche Bobois has called upon the leaders in the design and fashion world to “dress” special editions of the Mah Jong. Kenzo Maison, Missoni Home and Jean-Paul Gaultier have all had the privilege of providing patterns and fabrics to the Mah Jong sofa and, in turn, have helped to establish this piece as a timeless creation. This “free form” modular seating is the reference point for fully modular creative design. Roche Bobois, Marbella C.C. Torre Real, Ctra. CARLOS LAMAS

Carlos Lamas is one of the most creative and inspiring architects on the coast. With over 20 years of hands-on experience in Spain, he offers the complete package, from initial plans to interior designs. Here SOCIETY MARBELLA’s Laura-Jane Bruce talks exclusively to Carlos about his business and what exciting projects he is currently working on.

L-JB: What is your background? Did you study to become an architect? CL: I studied in Argentina, being awarded a degree in architecture. Immediately after, I moved to Spain to complete a selection of master degrees courses at the University Politécnica de Madrid. L-JB: And why did you choose Marbella as the destination for your business? CL: It was actually an accident that I chose Marbella to start my business. I used to holiday here, and enjoyed the lifestyle so much that I decided to permanently relocate. Like many other people on the coast, they adapt to the standard

of living here and never want to leave, and I have not once regretted it.

with choosing the most appropriate building firm within the client’s requirements.

L-JB: Why did you choose interior design also? CL: Interior design developed like a parallel desire, and is part of my philosophy with architecture; the two come handin-hand. This natural progression means that architecture and interior design need to be in harmony in order to complete a successful project.

L-JB: What projects are you currently working on? CL: At the moment we are working on high standard private villas, in areas like Cascada de Camojan, Sierra Blanca, Nagueles, Montemayor, Los Flamingos, Puente Romano, and many others.

L-JB: What services do you offer? CL: We provide assistance from the initial stages, in decisions such as choosing the most suitable plot of land, or to solving urbanistic problems with existing buildings. During the construction process, we carry out the technical supervision and management. We also design brand new homes and commercial premises, and with contemporary interior design. Our talented team consists of architects, engineers, and quantity surveyors. We are not a building company; we supervise all building processes, including assistance

L-JB: Where can we find your office? CL: At Centro Comercial Guadalmina, Bloque 4, San Pedro de Alcantara, and we are soon opening another office in Central Marbella.

PRO-AM 2011 saw the second hosting of the Santa Maria Pro-Am tournament. The event offered novices from across the South coast of Spain the opportunity to throw their hat in the ring and take on the challenge of a lifetime. After a lengthy selection process four candidates were selected in April to work towards the Grand Final Match on the 20 of August. They included Sian Wood, Martin Shields and Mark Thompson all from Gibraltar and CarrieAnne Flockton from Sotogrande. The match itself was nail biting with neither team willing to give an inch. When a sudden death chukka and best of seven penalties couldn’t separate them the umpires decided a draw was the fairest result! DRIVE ON!

Our in-depth motoring review

DRIVE ON!

Motoring author, racing driver and photo-journalist Ian Kuah reports on the Jaguar XKR-S

R

ight up until the debut of the new XJ saloon last year, Jaguar could have been described as a schizophrenic car manufacturer. On the one hand, they had the modern, yet classically beautiful XK coupe and convertible, and the cuttingedge XF saloon. On the other, they had a flagship saloon whose looks and image harked back to the late 1960s.

91

DRIVE ON!

With its ultra-modern styling, the new XJ changed all that in one fell swoop, making some of the detailing on the otherwise current XK and XF ranges look rather conservative. Fast-forward to June 2011, and we are at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, commonly known as Portimao Circuit. This official F1 test track, which opened in 2008, has significant elevation changes and two fast, blind crests in the course of its 4.629km length. It is a very fast and demanding track, even for experienced drivers. Hats off to Jaguar then for bringing all their face-lifted 2011 models here for us to try, even if most of the cars were only for testing on the surrounding roads. The brutish looking XKR-S looks totally at home on the track, but we were surprised that Jaguar also wanted us to drive the XJ Supersport saloon in this alien environment. The sight of the long wheelbase limo screaming its tyres through the bends was un-natural to say the least, and I had images of “Sir” spilling his tea in the back as I put the big, supercharged limo into fourwheel drifts in the faster bends, and lurid power slides through the slower ones. The XJ actually acquitted itself very well indeed on this extremely demanding circuit, exhibiting a fair turn of speed, balanced handling and very good composure for a car of its size and weight. The image of the 1960s Mk 2 Jaguar as the bank robbers’ getaway car of choice has obviously not been totally forgotten in Coventry! On the road, the face-lifted XFR once again proved that it is a match for anything the Germans can put forward in the way of super saloons. With 510hp from its supercharged V8, the XFR goes like the clappers, and its chassis strikes the perfect balance between comfort and sporting handling in this class. However, the most enticing offer here was the bombastic XKR-S, which I eventually directed my undivided attention towards. As the black, white and red options looked too “normal”, I chose French racing blue, just like the Geneva Motor Show debut car. At £97,000, it is by far the most powerful and expensive road legal production car Jaguar has ever made. Only the 193kg lighter and more aerodynamic XJ220 supercar of 1992, which had 500hp and 645Nm of torque, exceeds it in price and pace. The third generation Jaguar V8 motor is a DOHC, 32-valve, variable camshaft timing, alloy unit. No heavier than its 4.2 litre predecessor, it displaces 5,000cc, which makes a huge positive difference to its inherent torque. With a 92.5 x 93.0mm bore and stroke, the supercharged V8 is very slightly undersquare, and has a compression ratio of 9.5:1. Surprisingly, the crankshaft is cast iron rather than steel, but the connecting rods are forged steel. Fuelling is by

92

Direct Fuel Injection and an efficient sixth generation Twin Vortex Eaton blower, which sits in the Vee of the engine along with its liquid-cooled intercooler. This formula gives the supercharged Jaguar motor the muscle to take the fight to the V10-engined M5 and 6.3 litre AMG V8 on pretty much even horsepower terms, and outgun them with its superior low-end grunt.

DRIVE ON!

THE FACE-LIFTED XFR ONCE AGAIN PROVED THAT IT IS A MATCH FOR ANYTHING THE GERMANS CAN PUT FORWARD IN THE WAY OF SUPER SALOONS

93

DRIVE ON!

Where the XKR makes 510hp and 625Nm of torque, the even more highly tuned version of this supercharged 5.0 litre V8 in the XKR-S produces 550hp at 6,000rpm and 680Nm of torque from 2,500-5,500rpm. The XKR-S rockets to 100km/h in just 4.4 sec, and only stops its unrelenting charge when the speedometer needle is indicating 300km/h. Thanks to its bore and stroke ratio, the engine revs as hard and as willingly to the redline, producing copious torque along the way. While the less highly tuned versions of this motor also sound great, the tuned exhaust system in the XKR-S has an even more bellicose note. Well, actually it is bit more than a mere exhaust note. Tearing down the main straight at Portimao, with the deep and throaty V8 bellow echoing off the pit lane installations, a single XKR-S sounds like a whole NASCAR team hard at work! In Sport mode on road or track, the six-speed ZF gearbox produces swift and seamless ratio changes that are as fast as you could wish for. The software also executes throttle blips on downshifts, making anyone behind the wheel sound like a pro. I drove the car on a road route first where it showed up its dual nature as an effortless long distance cruiser on the motorway, and a machine for devouring challenging cross-country roads. Either way, it never wanted to do less than 160km/h, a speed that seemed like a mere canter. The huge outpouring of torque from low crankshaft speeds is responsible for that. You literally surf that wave of torque from just above idle, and with its peak at just 2,500rpm, and six forward gear ratios to maximise the engine’s generous output, there is always a suitable response on hand for any given situation.

94

If you blindfolded a typical traditional Jaguar owner in a moving XKR-S and asked him to guess the car he was in, the chances of him guessing it was made by his favourite marque would be very slim indeed. Jaguar cars have changed their dynamic signature significantly in the last three years, starting with the XFR. From the cruise liner floating sensation of the old XJ, they have slowly become tauter and more Germanic in the relentless quest for sharper response and better handling. While normal Jaguars have managed to retain their overall suppleness while bolstering their high-speed handling, they have also gained an edge to their secondary ride quality that feels more Munich than Coventry. This is most apparent in the XKR-S, whose chassis has been honed to handle the 550 big horses that live under its sleek bonnet. Thanks to the active damping,

DRIVE ON! a large measure of ride comfort is still there for those who cover continents in big bites. But overall, the balance with the wafting along experience has now been tipped the other way. Mind you, now that Jaguar’s build quality and reliability is up there with the best, if recent JD Power surveys are to be believed, former owners of the German marques whom Jaguar count as conquest sales, will feel perfectly at home. Thanks to this precision and tautness, the XKR-S is astonishingly rapid and agile on track for a car of its physical dimensions. Although I was soon to find out that the normal street tyres are the car’s Achilles heel. The extensive use of aluminium in its construction sees the XKR-S tip the scales at 1,753kg, significantly less than its German and Italian rivals. Even so, it is still a lot of weight to manage in these extreme conditions. At the start of my session, track going fleet had already spent most of the day being hammered round on the limit, but had had enough time to cool off before my session. However, three fast laps into my drive, it was obvious that the handling was going off rapidly as the standard road tyres struggled with the high on track temperatures. It was at least 30° C ambient at Portimao, which meant a tarmac temperature at least 5°C higher. Because of this, both ends of the car felt less precise by the lap, and by the sixth lap, it was down to the excellent chassis set up to keep the car pointing in the direction I wanted to go. My earlier laps told me that the handling is so well resolved you really can feel this big Coupe talking to your seat of your pants in a way that is beyond the

reach of obvious rivals like the Maserati GT. With this in mind, I really would love to try the XKR-S on a set of Michelin Cup tyres, or equivalent track day rubber. Only a truly accomplished sports car like the much more expensive Porsche Turbo S PDK is more than a match for the big cat in this environment. That said, I know which of the two I would rather take on an extended cross continental drive. Ultimately, a grand touring car at this level is all about balance. While the XKR-S tips the scales significantly more towards the sporty end of the scale than the standard XKR, it still manages to retain the traditional Jaguar strengths of performance with comfort. Just be aware that performance takes priority over comfort here. In its XK and XKR forms, Jaguar’s sleek Coupe is unquestionably one of the most handsome cars on the

95

DRIVE ON!

road, seriously challenging the much more expensive Aston Martin DB9 models for sheer presence and beauty. The XKR-S now also seriously challenges the Aston Martin DBS for sheer speed, but for significantly less money. It is said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and with its downturned mouth, spoilers, air scoops, pseudo-race seats and carbon-fibre trim, the XKR-S looks as extrovert as its bombastic performance suggests. Best described as Max Power meets Savile Row, it might just be a bridge too far for some tastes. Importantly however, Jaguar gives you a choice. Less hard-core drivers may find the softer character of the 510hp XKR, or even the naturally aspirated 385hp XK suits them better on a day-to-day basis. Variety is the spice of life, and with the wide spread of abilities now offered by the XK range, it seems that Jaguar has all its bases neatly covered. Spanish concessionaire: C. de Salamanca

Plastic is a material with many advantages, but when it ends up in the wrong place it becomes a problem. The initiative “Vac from the Sea” aims to bring attention to the issue of plastic pollution and at the same time combat the scarcity of recycled plastics needed for making sustainable home appliances. To raise public awareness about this issue, Electrolux has produced a limited edition range of vacuums using plastic debris from vulnerable marine habitats in the Pacific Ocean, the Indian Ocean, the Mediterranean, the Baltic and North Sea. The quest will be documented and communicated on the Electrolux Facebook page as well as on Twitter, so you can follow their progress and even get involved in really making a difference. facebook.com/electroluxappliances twitter.com/vacfromthesea

Most music fans feel frustrated with modern jukeboxes’ complex and tiresome interface. The overall experience appears to be generic and less engaging than the original. TouchTunes Virtuo, however, takes people to a different world of music and entertainment, by reinvigorating the experience of listening to music in a club. Reflecting the shifted expectations that music lovers have of digital music experiences, this new, smart juke underwent a modern design in its form as well as its function. An LED array just above the interface screen with ambient lights helps draw music lovers to the jukebox even from a distance, while fusing with the environment’s ambience. Another interesting feature of the Virtuo is its slightly angled, landscape-format touch screen that promotes a shoulder-to-shoulder experience with pals and features an integrated camera, which turns the juke instantly into a photo booth. touchtunes.com

EL GRAN

GATSBY I

n the heart of Puerto Banús, this luxurious restaurant and lounge dance bar offers breathtaking panoramic views of the port, superb cuisine and an ambience like no other. A vanguard concept of the Mediterranean kitchen, El Gran Gatsby proposes a dining experience with a difference. The exclusivity of the location is key; what’s not to like about the striking blue sky, luscious palm trees and opulent boats bobbing in the Med? Elegantly designed, this family owned restaurant was an instant hit as soon as it opened its doors in June. Puerto Banús has everything one could ever dream of (except a Chanel boutique!) and the family wanted to use the view of the deluxe boats as inspiration for their new project. They also own the established Magna Café in Nueva Andalucía, and used their experience to create something different; a unique restaurant with the wow factor that all residents of Marbella and visiting tourists were pining for. The décor of El Gran Gatsby is neutral and calming. Soft hues of creams and whites beautifully complement the opulence of the location, along with the backdrop of a remarkably brilliant sky and luscious sea. Modern and stylish in design, the fantastic views of the marina continue to the outdoor terrace, which transforms from a dining area into a lounge dance bar, offering you a relaxing environment or a

100

fantastic party venue to enjoy drinks and light snacks. It is the perfect location to start off the night, and being in the heart of the port, you are never far from your next destination. Open from 5pm, the kitchen staff are wonderfully skilled and open to challenges. The head chef Nandu Jubany is regarded as one of the best and most creative chefs in the whole of Spain. The third generation in a family of cooks, he brings with him a Michelin star from a restaurant in Barcelona, and has worked in restaurants in Madrid and the Basque country in northern Spain. The gastronomic experience he gained working under some of the best chefs in the world proved invaluable, and he is constantly fashioning new and interesting dishes. We visited El Gran Gatsby one early evening in August, and even though the port was bustling with tourists and residents, we were never disturbed by noise; the meal was tranquil and relaxing. The attentive staff were always on hand to refill our drinks or divulge information on the dishes we were going to be sampling. All the fish used in the creative menu is sourced from only the best local suppliers in Barbate and Cadiz. The succulent meats from northern Spain are the finest there are; ensuring you tender mouthfuls, bite after bite. Despite being a restaurant of great luxury, the dishes in El Gran Gatsby are extremely

well priced. For a dinner date, you need only spend around €80, and for a family of four €150. No matter if you’re looking for a quick bite to eat, a romantic dinner for two, or to hire the restaurant and/or terrace for a private celebration with family and friends, it won’t break the bank. Our first starter was a lobster diced vegetable salad, which was wonderfully creamy and balanced to perfection. This was followed by one of the signature dishes: a foie gras puff pastry tart, delicately rich and decorated with caramelised apples and other contrasting flavours. The dissimilarity between the luxuriant paté, the crunchy pastry and the sweetness of the fruit created a juxtaposition of flavours and textures in your mouth, and only heightened our anticipation for what was to come. For our mains, we had one meat and one fish dish, which were both charcoal grilled on oak shavings – this method enhances the natural flavours in the cuisine and needs no other spices or seasoning adding. The monkfish with lobster “suquet” stew was faultless, the juicy sauce is a Catalan recipe and complemented the flawlessly cooked fish. The succulent Tournedos Rossini, a particular favourite in traditional French kitchens and sourced from Asturias in

northern Spain, was sensationally cooked. The foie gras adorning the filet mignon was beautifully rich and decadent. Rounding off this perfect meal, we were served Rum French toast, oozing with pineapple and decorated with pistachios and a caramel ice cream. Lastly, the “Gran Gatsby” gin and tonic ice-cream, another of the signature dishes, was like nothing I’ve ever tasted before. The boozy but refreshing dessert was, topped with a barely-there whipped meringue and sprinkled with “peta zeta”, a form of Spanish exploding sherbet, which danced on your tongue. This is definitively a dish that needs to be experienced. This avant-garde restaurant and lounge dance bar is beautifully tranquil and allows you to remove yourself from the hectic tourist bubble below. El Gran Gatsby has it all; dinner, drinks and a spectacular view – one that rivals any other here on the Costa del Sol. Living here on the Costa del Sol, we are blessed with some of the finest eateries in the world, giving us the luxury of being able to choose from an amazing range of delicacies and cuisines. PASEO PARADISE

n my opinion, the Marbella Paseo is one of the most beautiful locations on the Costa del Sol. The luscious, aqua-blue Mediterranean Sea; the unbroken views of the rock of Gibraltar and North Africa; the feather soft sand and the sound of waves gently lapping against the shore. This is not only one of my favourite places to relax, it is also the perfect backdrop for an evening of excellent cuisine at Garum Resturant.

cess it’s no wonder the restaurant has a client list to match its undisputable reputation as one of the most popular dining destinations in Marbella. With residents and tourists returning year after year, manager and owner Timo Hamalainen reveals that he has had recommendations from clients as far away as Australia, which is an amazing credit to him and the team.

When we arrived there late one Monday evening in August, my first thought was what does “Garum” actually mean? After some rapid research, I discovered that in Roman times Garum was a fish accompaniment used in dishes as a luxury for the wealthy. And eating at this beautiful restaurant certainly is a luxury, although you don’t have to be as rich as a Roman emperor to eat here, as the restaurant’s prices are extremely reasonable.

Tables are often filled with families and couples eating on the spacious beachfront terrace or inside away from the burning sun. Open all year round, the terrace is equipped with a retractable roof to protect diners from Spain’s winter elements. The constant flow of clients from spring to winter allows Timo to develop and perfect the restaurant’s diverse menu. The tastes and textures are vast and combine flavours from all over the world; reflecting the modern, cosmopolitan lives that typical Garum diners lead.

Well-established as a restaurant with one of the best atmospheres on the coast, Garum will celebrate its seventh birthday in December. After so many years of suc-

Guests of the restaurant include almost all nationalities: Scandinavian, Russian, English, along with a recent influx of Americans. Wherever you are from, Timo

and the multi-lingual staff has an incredible ability to make you feel welcome. Always pleased to go the extra mile to tend to your every desire, they made us feel at ease as they recommended the best dishes to satisfy our appetites. Each year, Garum holds a cheesecake festival, where the talented chefs create a mix of 39 different cheesecakes, from savoury based smoked salmon, Serrano ham and blue cheese, to the traditional fruity flavours of exotic berries and creams. In addition, you can host meetings in Garum’s private exhibition room (which the restaurant will cater for) and even order extra food to takeaway to savour in the comfort of your own home. Whatever the time of day, Garum always has something to tantalise your taste buds. Open from 11am, diners can customise their own breakfast from a range of eggs, bacon, salmon and croissants, along with a selection of gourmet sandwiches. As soon as 1pm hits, the lunch menu is distributed, and from 6pm till late the kitchen serves dinner specials. We were fortunate enough to sample a range of dishes from Garum’s summer menu, but staples on their year round menu consist of chilled mango chilli gazpacho with smoked duck breast, Irish filet steak served with red onion jelly, rocket salad, French fried potatoes and rosemary jus and bitter chocolate and orange terrine served with white chocolate brandy fondue. My mouth is watering now at the thought of it! Our meal began with an exceptionally smooth and creamy foie gras pate that was decorated lovingly with sweet figs and fresh crunchy spinach. We also had a delicate salmon tartare with wasabi and horseradish ice-cream, caviar and lime vinegar – perfect for refreshing our palates before our mains were served. For our second course, we dined on beautifully elegant and moorish roast

monkfish wrapped in Serrano ham, accompanied with sautĂŠed leek and a smooth sage sauce. To follow we were served a wonderfully tender and juicy rack of lamb that was drizzled with honey and garnished with figs. Finally we enjoyed a portion of fresh, flaky sea bass topped with the roasted skin and perfectly presented on a bed of fragrant, minted pea purĂŠe and a ginger and lavender foam.

Garum Restaurant Paseo Maritimo, Avda de la Fontanilla, Marbella Tel. 952 858 858 garummarbella.com

To end this flawless journey of tastes, two desserts were served: a velvety strawberry and balsamic panacotta with a blood orange and vanilla dim sum parcel, along with a rich chocolate and ginger pastry with coconut cream. Garum restaurant runs an all-day concept, which gives Timo and the staff the opportunity to ensure that all needs and tastes are catered for and to continue to evolve the ever-changing menu. For excellent service, reasonable prices and exquisite food, this faultless eatery is perfect for the whole family. And be sure to ask about gift vouchers for a unique present for someone special.

Ocean Village Gears Up For Cardboard Boat Race 2011 Proving that the simple things in life are often the best, the annual Cardboard Boat Race organised by the William T illey Lodge is traditionally one of Ocean Village’s biggest crowd-pulling events.

www.focmagazine.com

This year’s contest, on Saturday 3 September, will once again see dozens of brave mariners negotiating a tough 1,000-metre course each hoping to avoid a soggy sinking feeling along the way. The rules of the Race are intentionally strict in order to ensure a level playing field and inspire maximum creativity. Boats (and oars) must be created from corrugated cardboard, which can be layered to any thickness, although tape and adhesives can only connect cardboard to cardboard or reinforce stress points. Wood, plastic, fibreglass and any kind of flotation foam are completely banned so it takes plenty of ingenuity to create a vessel capable of lasting the course. If all else fails and you start to ship water, don’t panic, there’s always the ‘Best T itanic Sinking’ trophy to aim for. Fees are set at £25 for each adult team and £10 for child teams with competitors aged 14 and under, with proceeds going to the GBC Open Day and Down’s Syndrome Support Group. For further infor mation or to register contact Ros Astengo at Ocean Village on 00350 200 40048 or email: ros.astengo@oceanvillage.gi.
