orn Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson in Santa Barbara, California on October 25th, 1984, Katy Perry, as we now know her was raised in a conservative household and initially attempted to break into the music business with a gospel album. Both of her parents are pastors and they refused to let her listen to any rock or popular music. “The only things I was allowed to listen to were the Sister Act 1 & 2 soundtracks,” she told Entertainment Weekly when talking of her childhood. She began singing at age 9 and followed this with learning to play the guitar. Wanting to pursue a career in music, Katy made several trips to Nashville with her mother to record the gospel album, Katy Hudson, which was released in 2001. “It reached literally maybe 100 people, and then the label went bankrupt,” she continued. Not giving up, Perry got her high school

I come from a ver y nonaccepting family, but I'm ver y accepting. diploma and made the move to Los Angeles when she was 17 years old where she began working with producer and songwriter Glen Ballar, who had previously collaborated with Christina Aguilera and Alanis Morissette. “It was five years of living in L.A. with no money, writing bad checks, selling my clothes to pay rent (and) borrowing money,” she told Seventeen magazine.

I have always been the kid who’s asked ’Why?’ In my faith, you’re just supposed to have faith. But I was always like ’why?’ ‘One of the Boys’ that spun her into the spotlight and she went on to have some of pop’s biggest hits including ‘Teenage Dream’, ‘California Gurls’, ‘Last Friday Night TFI’, ‘Roar’ and ‘Firework’. As well as earning a Best Female Pop Vocal Performance nomination at the Grammy’s, Katy began

"My personality is up and down, sassy and cheeky." to stand out for her theatricality and wild stage outfits. Describing her style to Esquire as “Lucille Ball meets Bob Mackie” she explained, “It’s about innuendo. I want everybody to get the joke, but I want them to think about it for a minute.” In 2009 Katy’s name hit the tabloids for her relationship with British comedian Russel Brand. Their whirlwind romance resulted in a wedding in India in 2010 that included a traditional Hindu ceremony, a processions of camels, elephants and horses, plus fire jugglers, snake charmers, dancers and musicians. Sadly the marriage didn’t last long as Brand filed for divorce in December 2011.

However Katy persisted and in 2007 after having three record deals fall apart she signed with Capitol Records. Through the label’s connections Katy began working with Dr. Luke. The pair co-wrote the songs ‘Hot n Cold’ and ‘I Kissed a Girl’. It was her second album,

I fall in love ever y time. And I don't really fall in love a lot, but when I do, I fall hard. In 2011 Katy became the first female artist to achieve five number one singles from the same album. The couple were spotted on numerous dates together including an Adele concert and a holiday in Hawaii. However the duo publicly ended their relationship after a year announcing in a joint statement, "Before rumours or falsifications get out

of hand, we can confirm that Orlando and Katy are taking respectful, loving space at this time." However before the year ended the couple were spotted back together with a source revealing, “Katy wants to make things work this time around. She tried, but she couldn’t cut him off. She cares too much about him. This time, they’re keeping things low key – but they’re

back together.” And it looks like Katy is getting her happyever-after as Orlando popped the question on Valentine’s Day this year! For all the engagement gossip head to the next page to find out more.

ove is in the air for this month’s cover star… Katy Perry and her (now fiancé), actor Orlando Bloom got engaged on the most romantic day of the year, Valentine’s Day! Perry shared the news via Instagram with a snapshot of the couple and her new sparkler with the caption, “Full Bloom.” From what we could see from the Instagram pics it looks like Orlando went all out, with the proposal featuring heart shaped balloons seen in the background. This marks the second engagement for both stars. Katy Perry was previously married to Russell Brand for 14 months and Orlando was married to model, Miranda Kerr for three years; they share a son, Flynn. Brand has since popped the question to Laura Gallacher and Kerr is married to Snapchat founder Evan Spiegel.

sad month for fashion, with the biggest loss for the industry since Coco Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld, one of fashion’s most iconic names for the last 40 years, died from pancreatic cancer last month in Paris. As soon as the news broke celebrities began paying tribute to Chanel’s Creative Director. Victoria Beckham wrote, “So incredibly sad to hear this. Karl was a genius and always so kind and generous to me both personally and professionally.” Naomi Campbell thanked Lagerfeld for “taking the chance on (a) 16 year old girl from South London and opening my eyes” and Kim Kardashian recalled working with the designer in her first-ever photo shot. “You shot my first fashion shoot and I was so nervous to work with such an icon,” she wrote. “The world is so much chicer because you existed! I am beyond honoured to have met you and had the opportunity to work with you. You are so loved and will be so missed.” It has since been revealed Karl Lagerfeld’s ashes will be mixed with the designer’s one true love, Jacques de Bascher, who died in 1989 aged 38 after contracting AIDS. As per Lagerfeld’s wishes there won’t be a funeral as he once famously said; “There will be no funeral. I’d rather die!”

star Dermot O’Leary is saying goodbye to the NTAs. Following 10 years as the host of the award show, Dermot has stepped down from this role after saying he ‘would throw in the towel’ if Ant and Dec won a controversial 18th gong last month. In a statement, Dermot wrote: ‘After 10 years of proudly hosting the National Television Awards, I have decided it’s time to step down as host. It’s been a tough decision because we have had a ball over the last decade, but 10 years feels about right. I would like to thank Indigo and my ITV family for a brilliant ten years and look forward to proudly passing on the baton in 2020...and a holiday in January!’

DIDO

Still On My Mind

We haven’t had a new album from Dido since 2013’s Girl Who Got Away, but this month she returns with her fifth studio album. Much of Still On My Mind was written and recorded in England as “a result of the fruitful and incredibly natural production/songwriting partnership” with brother Rollo, who contributed extensively to all of her previous releases. “It was simple, I only wanted to make another album if it was with him,” the 46-year-old Grammynominated singer noted in a statement. “It was made in such an easy way, all the vocals recorded on the sofa, a lot of it recorded at home,” explained Dido.

DAVID GRAY

JAMES MORRISON

Gold In A Brass Age

You’re Stronger Than You Know

Nineties pop star David Gray’s last album was Mutineers back in June 2014, but this year he returns and the singer has announced a world tour to support his new album. The album explores new electronic textures as Gray teams up with producer Ben DeVries. The album’s artwork is designed by Peckham based designer Londonboy Tattooer and depicts an Emperor moth with the City of London captured between its wingspan. Speaking about the creation, Gold In A Brass Age,

You’re Stronger Than You Know is Morrison’s fifth studio album and will be followed by his first full UK tour in three years which includes a London date at the O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire. Morrison teamed up with Mark Taylor on the LP, marking the first time in his career that he’s worked on a whole album with just one producer. The majority of the record was recorded at British Grove Studios in London within a week, with a second spent adding finishing touches such as backing vocals and horns.

THE CHAINSMOKERS

Sick Boy Gray says; “With this album, my default position was to do everything differently. I didn’t think ‘this would be a good hook or ‘these lyrics could work for a chorus’. I was keen to get away from narrative. Instead of writing melodies, I looked for phrases with a natural cadence, so that the rhythm began with the words. I reimagined where a song might spring from and what form it could take.”

22

The Grammy-Award winning American DJ Duo, also known as Alex Paul and Andrew Taggart introduce their second studio album, Sick Boy. The album features appearances by DJ’s NGHTMRE and Aazar and vocalists Emily Warren, Kelsea Ballerini, Winona Oak and Drew Love of R&B duo THEY.

PAGES and... Did you know that reading enhances your memory; every time you read something new your brain “makes room” to fit it in. So, if you want to keep your memory on top form then here are our selection of fiction to fill your March featuring feel good reads such as Queenie and When All is Said.

QUEENIE by Candice Carty-Williams Bridget Jones’ Diary meets Americanah summarises this boldly political novel. Queenie tells the story of a 25-yearold Jamaican British woman living in London attempting to find her way through two different cultures but feeling like she doesn’t fit into either. As Queenie moves from one questionable decision to another she finds herself wondering, “What are you doing? Why are you doing it? Who do you want to be?”

WHEN ALL IS SAID by Anne Griffin This is the story of Maurice Hannigan, who, over the course of a Saturday night in June, orders five different drinks at the Rainford House Hotel. With each he toasts a different person in his life, and through these people he tells the story of his life, including all the regrets, feuds, loves and triumphs. If you had to pick five people to sum up your life, who would it be? If you were to raise a glass to each of them, what would you say? And what would you learn about yourself when all is said and done?

DAISY JONES AND THE SIX by Taylor Jenkins Reid A gripping novel about the whirlwind rise of an iconic 1970’s rock band and their beautiful lead singer. Daisy is a girl coming of age in LA making the most of the sex, drugs, rock and roll. Billy Dunne is the lead singer of band, The Six. When a producer finds gold putting the two together what follows becomes the stuff of legends.

GIRLS WITH SHARP STICKS by Suzanne Young The girls of Innovations Academy are beautiful and well behaved. Under the watchful eyes of their guardian, they receive a well-rounded education that promises to make them obedient, free from arrogance or defiance, free from troublesome opinions or individual interests. But their carefully controlled existence may not be quite as it appears…

GRAVE NEW WORLD By Ian Greenland

28

S

cience has given us so much it's almost impossible to overstate. Penicillin radically altered our perception of previously deadly ailments and vaccination stopped the spread of diseases in their tracks. The steam engine drove the industrial revolution which dragged us into modernity and the aeroplane made the world a smaller place just as the internet made it more connected. The contraceptive pill catalysed widespread social reform while refrigeration revolutionised our relationship to food. The birth of semiconductor electronics in the mid 20th century laid the foundations for the machines which create our virtual world a century after sanitation greatly increased our life expectancy and stopped everywhere stinking quite so much of shit.

But for each leap forward, there's been a detour down a technological cul-de-sac. For every triumphant rocket into space, a nerd on a Segway failed to outpace the cackling youths throwing drinks cans at him. For every MRI scanner saving lives with electromagnetic fields and radio waves, a cat in Japan wearing patented paw-mops was unable to properly clean a kitchen floor. Every eureka moment at a first spark of fire, turn of a wheel or crackle of electricity saw a despondent bald man stare in the mirror after spraying on Hair-in-a-can, finally accepting this was rock bottom.

...Of course he'd be wrong. Rock bottom is when that big door opens ever so slowly yet inexorably and you find yourself face to face with a train carriage full of commuters. They look at you, you stare back dumbfounded. Their pitying gaze averts downwards, coming to rest instead on the trousers you've got round your ankles. It's rush hour on a Tuesday on the outskirts of London and it's suddenly the worst moment of your entire life. Because that door wasn't the carriage door, it was the big stupid curved one that superficially separates you from 300 tightly packed strangers while you're going potty, and some glasses-wearing dick at a computer decided to design it with a load of buttons instead of a good old fashioned know-where-you-are-witha-lock fucking LOCK! Only collective shock and thinly veiled propriety have so far delayed that genuine technological marvel, the mobile phone camera from pointing your way and broadcasting your shame to the world. It's like a horrific version of Blind Date, with that big door moving aside to reveal the worst first impression ever and no Cilla to diffuse the tension. What's more, the one button which can re-draw a slowly moving curtain on this nightmare has been placed hilariously out of reach without first getting off the toilet - only Mr. Tickle could stop it mid opening without simultaneously revealing his own. It's unnecessary, flawed tech implemented where it's neither needed nor wanted. Who ever used a traditional toilet and said, “This is frustratingly simple. Why can't we have a three button system where sometimes the lights come on and sometimes they don't and you never know for sure if you're about to open the door on a poor, mortified soul shitting and if you don't open the door on a poor mortified soul shitting, then that poor, mortified shitting soul might be me in a sec because the sodding light's not come on and that could just be a problem with the light or it might be the whole locking mechanism... Do I chance it? I just want to poo before Paddington, but I don't particularly want everyone to see me pooing..... Why am I even going to Paddington every day, dressed like a berk, always needing a poo? I hate my job, I hate London. What am I doing with my life??.... ” The second part: quite a few probably. The first part; NOBODY.

Once you've played Russian Poolette with the door comes the spectacularly ineffective combined soap/water dispenser and hand dryer. Except you never get all three working. Your options are generally clean but wet hands (no dryer), soapy, dry hands (no water) or wet, dirty hands (no soap, no dryer)... If designers are desperate for extra tech in toilets, make a lazer that shoots men in the dick when they piss all over the seat they're too lazy to lift! I'm not sure if women are committing comparable crimes against hygiene but if so, I don't know, maybe a big mechanical boxing glove that thumps them in the tits or something. My mum says there's already too much toilet humour in my articles so i'll move on.... Self-FRIGGING-checkout machines! Whilst I appreciate we're now given the option to scan our own shopping (essentially paying to work for the store), you invariably end up needing assistance - assistance which is usually not forthcoming because it's already been outsourced to your electronic antagonist... or assistance that's out the back smoking an electronic fag. Missing discounts? SEEK ASSISTANCE. After alcohol?? SEEK ASSISTANCE. Painkillers? - think again. I'm a selfemployed, full time dad to a boisterous three year old – of course I'm after alcohol and painkillers and on those rare occasions when we find ourselves buying neither, the Babybel he insisted on eating from the multipack mid-shop has thrown the weight sensors off so we're back to calling for help. In the face of such faff, of course the option (like some 20% anonymously surveyed admit) to just pinch a banana or two presents itself but what kind of example would that be setting my boy?... No, we only steal from Waitrose. The final automated “Up yours!” comes if you're foolish enough to pay in cash... You feed in two crisp twenties and then the machine makes a sort of mechanical chuckling noise as it spits £9.20 back in a combination of 50p's, 5's, 2's and 1's. Your receipt gets jammed in the printer or falls in a pile on the floor with a hundred others. You stagger out needing an extra bag-for-life for your change, immediately realise you forgot to buy toothpaste and start to cry a little bit.

You should have saved those tears for something truly worthy though, because you get home to find the broadband's not working. This isn't your first rodeo... You put the kettle on, take ten deep breaths and attempt to get zen before picking up the phone and dialling your provider.... Zen my arse.

The irony that they're telling you to go online when you're calling about being offline would be lost on a robot so you bite your tongue. The first voice you hear is a patronising, vaguely robotic one, essentially telling you to piss off off the phone and go online for the answer to your problem like you didn't already know that was an option. You shut your eyes and wait while they waste more of your time slowly reciting web addresses you can apparently find answers you know will not help since you've already reset it, unplugged the cables and blown really hard on it... This fucker needs a line fix or an engineer out. The irony that they're telling you to go online when you're calling about being offline would be lost on a robot so you bite your tongue. Of course you could use your phone data to look for the answer but not everyone wants to trawl message boards and FAQ on their phone. Not everyone has phone data. Some of us just want a speedy solution from a human we're effectively employing, but the robot gatekeepers aren't letting you through that easy. Resist their initial brush off and they'll then ask you: “In a few words, tell me what your problem is so I can direct you to the right department. For example you could say, “to pay my bill” - you laugh morbidly, knowing those words would lead you to a whole other automated level of hell... “so go ahead, tell me what your problem is...” You grip your phone tightly and drone “INTERNET NOT WORKING” “I think you are calling about the internet. Is that right?”

For every MRI scanner saving lives with electromagnetic fields and radio waves, a cat in Japan wearing patented paw-mops was unable to properly clean a kitchen floor. 29

Well done you think sarcastically, medal in the post... “YES” you say, exhaling in frustration as you glance at your watch and know there's a long way to go yet.

“Okay, now, in a few words, tell me what's wrong. For example....”

Don't give me a fucking example, I don't need a fucking example!! “...

you could say, my internet's not working” I already did you piece of... “or, i'd like to talk about upgrading my internet” ….no, no,

just having it working for the 35 quid a month i'm already paying you is fine thanks... “So go ahead, tell me

what your problem is...” You resist the urge to scream, “I'll tell you what my fucking problem is...” and take a grammatically different tack.... “BROADBAND NOT WORKING” “There's a problem with your broadband, is that right?” “YESSSSSSSSSSSS” you hiss into the phone through gritted teeth, sweat beginning to form on your brow. “OK. Did you know you can find many of the answers you're after on www.....” You miss the next bit as you hold the phone at arm's length and scream at it. The dog wees on the carpet in fright. “...but if you'd still like to speak to someone, I'll need to ask you a few security questions.

30

OK. Please enter your 8 digit account number now followed by hash”

Not technically a question you think with bitter impotence as you tap away. “Now please enter your date of birth as a six-digit number...” You start to type agai... “For example, if your date of birth is the eleventh of November, nineteensixty....” You begin smashing yourself in the face with one of the sofa cushions.

“…. so go ahead, please enter your date of birth now” You struggle to hit the right numbers on the keypad as your hands shake with rage. I better not be paying for this call... “Thank you for passing security...”

“We're transferring you now”..... ….. …........ Cue 18 minutes of your least favourite Moby song on a loop. …...................... …................................

The dog's just looking worriedly at you now as you lay on the floor, staring at the ceiling, chewing the back of your hand. Moby abruptly stops and the welcome sound of a call centre sends you scrabbling for the phone.... “Hello, you're through to Rob at _________, how can I help you?” You sing inside – Rob! ROB! Oh thank

god. Thank ROB! I love you Rob, Rob, you beautiful manRob. You compose

yourself and try not to let your voice betray the fact you just made the dog piss itself... “Hello Rob, yes, um, the internet's not working and I've tried all the usual things, so could you take a look please.” “No problem, I'm sure I can help you with that. Before I do, I just need to go through some security questions with you...”

Oh Rob, I fucking hate you Rob, you piece of shit Rob.... Deep Breath. “Sure, my account number's.....”

“okay, thank you for passing security. I'm just going to take a quick look at your...” ...Silence.... “H-hello? Hello????! Rob? RRRRRROOOOOOOBBBBBBBBBBB!!!!...” CALL ENDED Now you can cry.

El Paseo del Mar, bringing a new era of gastronomic excellence to Kem pin s ki H otel Bahía

Welcome to El Paseo del Mar, a cluster of unique gastronomic spaces within Kempinski Hotel Bahia. Black Rose The Bar, Blatazár Bar & Grill, and Spíler Beach Club.

K

empinski Hotel Bahia, is soaring to new culinary heights with the launch of ‘El Paseo Del Mar’ - a new culinary destination sure to delight food-lovers from across the globe. El Paseo Del Mar is a gastronomic playground co-created by the familyrun Zsidai Group, as part of a €4 million refurbishment of the property. It includes not one, but three design-led restaurants and bars; Baltazár Bar & Grill, Spíler Beach Club and Black Rose The Bar. As Roy Zsidai from the Zsidai group states; ”We are delighted to be bringing our experience, vision and restaurant concepts to the Kempinski Hotel Bahía. As restaurateurs with experience of setting up similar venues in the Kempinski Budapest, we know we have the skills to create iconic restaurant concepts here. I love the area and feel the Kempinski Hotel Bahía has amazing potential to become one of the coolest locations on the Costa del Sol”

”We are delighted to be bringing our experience, vision and restaurant concepts to the Kempinski Hotel Bahía. As restaurateurs with experience of setting up similar venues in the Kempinski Budapest, we know we have the skills to create iconic restaurant concepts here..."

BALTAZÁR BAR & GRILL Baltazár Bar & Grill, the first of the new outlets to launch in 2018, boasts a carefully-curated menu brimming with Spanish classics, grilled meats and seafood, freshly prepared using locally sourced, natural products. An urban take on a romantic bodega - inspired by Andalucía’s sun-dappled streets, traditional ceramics and moorish architecture – the buzzy Baltazár Bar & Grill is dressed in Aztec-inspired fabrics, oozing with burnt orange and brilliant reds that mirror the flames dancing in the restaurant’s open kitchen. Guests can watch as their fresh fare is prepared by Chefs using a traditional Tandoori Oven or Josper Grill; for a subtly-smoky, perfectly-juicy result.

33

BLACK ROSE THE BAR Also benefiting from the recent refurbishment is the hotel’s lobby; a light-filled, luxurious space, used as a library, meeting place and home to Black Rose The Bar. Named after an esteemed ship, and celebrating the spirit of today’s intrepid traveller, Black Rose The Bar serves up some of the finest cocktails, wines and craft beers on the coast. Guests can tailor their tipple, as master mixologists whisk up creative cocktails according to flavour preferences. Enjoy on the sun-soaked terrace, with unrivalled views of the Mediterranean and African coast, or settle into a cosy snug in the newly-renovated lobby.

34

SPÍLER BEACH CLUB Set to launch in April 2019, Spíler Beach Club promises to become a thriving dining destination for locals, passersby and hotel guests alike. Zesty seafood, fresh salads and perfectly-prepared artisan pizzas are seasoned with ingredients from the fields of Andalucía and can be enjoyed from the daybeds lining the resort’s intertwining swimming pools, or private booth in Spiler’s stylish lounge. As the sun sets, Spíler transforms into an elegant evening destination; enjoy fresh oysters, perfectly chilled champagne, and live music. The modern Andalucían interiors reflect its enviable beachfront location, with white-washed walls, varying hues of beachy blues, woven cushions and traditional wicker-style chairs.

35

ABOUT THE HOTEL 25-minutes west of Marbella, Kempinski Hotel Bahia offers a more relaxed, authentic alternative to the bustling beach clubs and busy sands of nearby resorts. A sand-coloured maze of turrets and sprawling balconies, the property plays home to lively landscaped gardens, an assortment of family-friendly swimming pools, boldly-styled living spaces and luxurious rooms and suites. A private horticultural garden brimming with lemon, avocado and olive trees leads to a private tennis court, an awardwinning spa, and yoga and fitness studio. There’s plenty of history, too; explore a 16th century watchtower, once manned to protect the land from approaching pirates, and now used to host private dinners or yoga sessions.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

Victoria Wood is a freelance writer and mother of three based in the south of Spain. Life for her is primarily based around a healthy diet, lifestyle and educating herself and those around her how to live well. Victoria has been a writer for the past twenty years and her work includes an environmental column, journalistic editorials and social media management. She is also a proofreader and editor, and is currently working on her first novel.

A quick guide torenting a p l u f e c a Pe WE ALL WANT A PEACEFUL LIFE AND WHEN IT COMES TO OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH OUR CHILDREN THIS IS PARAMOUNT. WE HAVE GIVEN OURSELVES THE ENORMOUS TASK OF ROLE MODEL TO, AT BIRTH, A MOSTLY BLANK CANVAS. THE ROLE OF LEADER AND LIFE-GUIDE TO THESE LITTLE BEINGS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT ONE WE WILL EVER HAVE AND OFTENTIMES THE MOST CHALLENGING. WE ARE THROWN IN AT THE DEEP END WITHOUT A RULE BOOK AND OUR ONLY REAL SUPPORT SYSTEM IS OUR DESIRE TO DO THE BEST JOB WE CAN. We are there to provide a safe environment filled with love and guidance, to nurture their every need and calmly deliberate every instance whereby a challenge arises.

Is this reality?

NOT ALWAYS. NOT IN MY HOUSE! We get tired, we lose our patience, we live stressful busy lives and children can be seriously difficult to handle when we are under pressure. NOT their fault, but it is ok to feel challenged and wonder why you are not capable of winning the super-dad or mum award every week. To combat your own natural instincts - or should I say, instinctual reaction under duress - is a mighty tough ask. To practice consistent patience and prevent losing your cool when things get testy is really challenging. For some helpful methods take a look at this guide to managing your emotions, take the bullet points and carry them with you mentally, if this is something which hits home.

TAKE A BREATH:

Don’t lose it. Don’t yell. Shouting at your kids makes them assume that this is a normal reaction. A child experiencing stress will naturally go into survival mode - fight, flight or freeze. They may mimic your behaviour by yelling back or at others. They may also begin to reject your words, if they come loaded with aggression they may not even hear them. Worse still they may become so used to being shouted at that they eventually build up a resistance to it and it doesn’t affect them at all. We need to manage our own emotions and set the standard for our children to follow. So before you release any pent up aggression

40

verbally, stop, take a breath and reassess your mindset. Work out what needs to be said and say it in calm. If this proves difficult, take a moment to walk or shake out your hands, anything to release the bad energy.

RESPECT THE IMMATURE:

We have to recognise that children are in fact just that, children. They are not small adults who decide they are going to purposely disrupt the rest of the world with their unnecessarily loud voices or unruly actions, they just don’t know better yet. They can’t always rationalise their feelings, just as us adults struggle to do so sometimes! A child will express intense emotion as opposed to rationalising a situation. And it is the job of the parent to advise and guide them into the more socially acceptable and beneficial ways of life. This needs to be done calmly and on their level (in language that they will comprehend).

SEE THE WOOD FOR THE TREES:

As a parent there will be times when life builds up, you may have had a bad day at work, you may be upset with a partner or friend, or perhaps feeling under the weather. This is not your child’s fault obviously, so if you feel that tension building up into unjust reactions you need to take a moment. Take responsibility for how you are feeling and analyse the situation at hand, not your entire day. Find your resolve and then go forth and resolve!

CONNECT THEN CORRECT:

We need to teach lessons, the best way to get a child to really listen is to first be on the same side. Use that empathy we talked about, find your emotional generosity, show them you care and understand, and reconnect. Once they see that you’re on side they will be far more likely to hear your words of correction and instruction and take heed.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

EMPATHY OVER SYMPATHY: When a child reacts (or in our eyes, overreacts) emotionally there are often tears and screams and even a fist or two swung about. In these moments they need to be understood, a hug does do some good but they are still experiencing and probably will again some sort of frustration that needs to be addressed. If you take the situation or cause apart and show the child that you understand what they are feeling, make it real, make it everyone’s, empathise. From this they may learn to be able to handle it better next time. If they know that we are all going through that feeling then perhaps they’ll feel a bit apprehensive to throwing a crazy tantrum over it.

41

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

COMPASSIONATE CORRECTION: When we do need to say no, to redirect behaviour, to correct a situation with a child this is still perfectly achievable in a peaceful manner. Remove the child from the surroundings and find a quiet comfortable situation to sit and talk. Go over what is happening in a clear calm voice in order to show them that you understand things from their point of view. “I see that you are really upset with your brother, and I totally understand, it is so difficult sometimes to control your emotions”, followed by an explanation of why their behaviour wasn’t acceptable, and an understandable reason as to why you are saying no to it.

“IT IS NOT OK TO SHOUT OR KICK, USING AGGRESSION IS NOT A GOOD WAY TO SOLVE AN ISSUE, YOU NEED TO USE YOUR WORDS, OR COME TO ME FOR HELP”

FAMILY RULES:

Yes it does, but also we need some. Rules that is. If we are going to make a shift towards patient, peaceful parenting a family needs to work as a team. Making some family-wide commitments is a huge progression; if everyone works together, far more can be achieved. Work on bonding with each individual in the family, and also as a unit. Explain calmly and clearly what your ‘house rules’ are and initiate them as something important but that you all have to work at as a team.

“To cause harm and pain to someone else when you are upset doesn’t help the problem, let’s work on fixing the problem together”. Show that you know that this is not easy and you don’t expect miracles but ask them to try for you, because it is really upsetting to see people you love being unkind to one another. Give them positive reinforcement and empower them by giving them the reigns on repairing the issue, ask how they would go about it and provide encouragement.

For kids to see a grown up working at the same things they are, such as speaking respectfully to each other, repairing our mistakes, and maintaining good behaviour, will make these things more approachable for them. They are not alone in this, we are all in it together. Work on kindness and listening, for example, and ask the children for their help in making this the way of life in your home. Give explanations they can understand, keep things real, and ask them for their input and ideas. Acknowledge their perspective but stick within the set boundaries.

RELAY AND RELATE:

DAILY COMMITMENTS:

If you’re struggling to connect or resolve a situation try to think of an example in your own life (or make one up) whereby a similar thing happened to you and

42

what you did to make it better. Relay this to the child in story form, this helps the child relate to you, relate to the situation, realise that it happens to other people too and also the story is a great distraction from the intensity of the moment. Win win.

Every morning go through the ways in which you will achieve peaceful parenting. Remake the commitment daily to stay calm and choose love.

BE HUMAN:

I personally feel that honesty goes a long way. To admit to being human and capable of error is far more conducive to a healthy relationship with your child than them assuming everything you do and say is the word of some higher plain. We can be real, we can err, and we can apologise for this. This does not make us lower in their estimations but rather teaches valuable lessons to our small folk. So if your patience slips and you need to start over, say sorry for what you feel went wrong and move on. Asking for their forgiveness also teaches them compassion and empathy which will serve them well in life. If you find yourself routinely irritable and unable to accomplish these tasks (none of which are easy so don’t give up on yourself too quickly) then perhaps a bigger change is needed for you personally, such as taking more personal time for things you enjoy, a better diet, healthier sleep patterns, breaking bad habits, etc. There is nothing wrong with admitting a few faults and making a few positive and needed changes to make life easier and more peaceful for everyone. The secret of making this transition is having compassion for yourself, just as you do for your child. Expect to make mistakes. Expect some days to be a huge struggle. Parenting is hard.

COMPASSION, ACCEPTANCE, TRUST, EMPATHY, SAFETY, UNDERSTANDING, LOVE. TRY TO FIND AND GIVE ALL OF THESE TO YOURSELF AS WELL AS YOUR CHILD. YOU’LL PROBABLY MAKE MISTAKES, WE ALL DO, ALL THE TIME, AND THAT IS OK!

DOES THIS SOUND LIKE YOU?

“IN THE MORNING YOU BEG TO SLEEP, IN THE AFTERNOON YOU ARE DYING TO SLEEP, AND AT NIGHT YOU REFUSE TO SLEEP?”

W

e spend anywhere from a quarter to a third of our lives sleeping, or at least trying to. By the time we reach adulthood, you’d think we’d have our sleeping skills down. Oh if only it were that simple!!

Good, quality sleep is essential for strength, stability and healing of the mind and body . The four most critical hours of sleep for healing and repair are between the hours of 10pm-2am. During these hours, the body undergoes healing and restorative processes especially for liver, lymphatic, immune, cognitive, cardiovascular, and endocrine function. Just about every client I see has at least one issue surrounding sleep. I have to admit, I too struggle with it on occasion. If you have a hard time getting a good night’s rest, I feel your pain. I know from first hand experience how frustrating it can be. You know how important it is, you want a good night sleep, but sometimes it just won’`t happen. Through my own experimenting, I’ve picked up a few sleep ‘hacks’ that have really made a big difference for me and with clients. They’re simple, cost almost nothing, and have been some of the biggest game changers in my own health, as it relates to sleep.

No screens before bed

This is a hard one. The blue hued light in most screens mimics the type of light that you’d experience during the early hours of the morning. Basically, it tricks your eyes into sending a ‘wake up’ signal to your brain. If you absolutely can’t live without your night time TV or phone sessions, there are a few tricks. Though you may look a little silly, Blue blocking sunglasses can be a quick fix that blocks the awakening hues. They also make screen protectors that filter out blue light.

Get some natural sunshine during the day Our physiology is designed to interact with our natural surroundings. Our circadian rhythm, the cycle responsible for sleep and awake states, is driven by the sun. If you spend your entire day inside, your system has a hard time distinguishing when to hit the sleep switch. Spending just 30 minutes outside can help cue your body into its natural cycle. Go for a walk, sit in a park with a good book, or enjoy your morning coffee in the backyard.

45

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

No caffeine after lunch Though it sometimes is hard to realise, caffeine can still be affecting your physiology even hours after it’s consumed. Stick to decaf teas, like herbal teas and Tulsi is one of my favourites. This might be a bit of a rough transition for some people but your adrenal system will reward you

Add in minerals supplements and herbs

Just breathe A super quick way to set your system into calm mode is through a specific breathing technique called box breathing. It’s simple yet effective for shutting off our stress response. Box breathing is simply inhaling, holding, exhaling and holding for identical counts of time. I suggest starting with 4 seconds. Simply inhale on a four second count, hold your breath for 4 seconds, exhale for a 4 second count and hold for an additional 4 second count. Next time you’re struggling to fall asleep, give it a shot!

A common cause of disturbed sleep is simple mineral deficiency! One of the first things I recommend to clients having sleep trouble is to begin supplementing minerals. Magnesium and calcium deficiency are especially linked to sleep issues. I recommend Mary Ruth Organics Nighttime Mineral supplement or Natural Calm before bed. A few good herbs to help support sleep are lemon balm, passion flower, or valerian. They’re all incredibly gentle calmatives that are non habit forming. The combination of passion flower and valerian enables the mind and your cells to relax, inducing the perfect internal sleep environment. Lemon balm is known for inducing a serene state that supports sleep and has been used for centuries. Everyone is different and I find that some people prefer some types of herbs over others. Experiment with a few different types to find out which works best for you.

46

Sleep with a slightly cooler temperature If you can, set your thermostat to 60-65. We naturally sleep better if it’s a bit on the chilly side. The slight decrease in body temp actually helps to slow down the system, lowers blood pressure, and reduces respiration rate. This subtle signal tells our body it’s time for some shut eye.

TLE The unbelievable journey continues Well this month has been fantastic with TLE forming alliances with other like-minded individuals interested in the amazing properties of the Hemp/ Cannabis plant. I believe in a healthy lifestyle, and to maintain balance in the mind and body, I not only use hemp but I use daily exercise, diet and meditation. The importance of taking care of yourself in the form of food and exercise is fundamentally important to our overall health and welfare. The everyday pressures of our lives cause the utmost stress on us and this in turn reflects on our bodies causing us to feel off balance. Just remember that we all have bad days when we think we can’t cope or life’s just too much, give yourself a little time and energy. Enjoy what nature has provided, walk in the mountains or on the beach, smile in the sunshine and listen to meditation music. We are all unique and we all need different things in our lives to help us grow. I feel truly blessed that I have been given this opportunity to help people and work in this unbelievable fascinating industry, I have to keep pinching myself that I am actually living my dream and I believe that you all can too, its all in the power of our thoughts.

EXTENDED FAMILY MAKE UP THE MARKETING TEAM…

DESIGN YOUR BLOOD WITH TONI DICKS At Christmas in the Santa’s Grotto with my two children, I bumped into a friend from school that I had not seen in over 25 years! Once we got talking we discovered that we both were using natural therapies to help treat clients. When Toni explained how she worked with blood analysis and homeostasis I could not believe my luck … how the universe works, its incredible. Being with Toni has given me a deeper understanding of how PH levels in our blood effect our body and the way it responds. Everyone is unique and our eco system is tuned in to find exactly what our body needs. Her theory that one of the reasons that CBD helped people was that Hemp was the perfect PH level which is homeostasis …. Guess what it is. According to the acid alkaline food chart the PH levels of flax seed which is another name for hemp was rated 6 and hemp protein powder was rated 8. This helps us get into balance. Toni offers a personalised service that analyses your blood to find your homeostasis (which is the optimum health where your higher self is able to flow). We will be able to analyse your PH levels just after taking CBD to see the exact effect it has on each individual client. I am so excited to be able to have a deeper insight into how the different cannabinoids effect each and everyone. It’s amazing how the human body was developed to look after itself. It is constantly working to take out what it needs to repair itself and bring our body into homeostasis.

NEW LOCATION …. We have now got a beautiful secluded location for clients to come and visit me in person, where they can view the products and learn more about CBD and the cannabis plant. We work individually with clients to try to see what program works best for you, finding holistic therapies and include recommendations for blood analysis, diet and exercise. We are all unique and every person has different needs and requirements therefore every treatment is slightly different. Please call or email to make appointments.

When starting a business, the most important and time consuming part is finding the right people to work with, well who better than my best friend Lisa Goodchild and Sarah Wilson my sister from Digiwoo learning. They have over 20 year’s experience and will be maintaining websites and social media from the UK. My marketing team in Spain will be lead by Vanessa Gonzalez who is inspirational, when we were introduced through a friend we just clicked. She loves all things organic and is great at finding the right people to work with who appreciate sustainable products and the benefit they have in society.

Maxence Millieret

I have also found myself the perfect apprentice and PA, Maxence Millieret who is currently finishing off her studies in the IE business school in Madrid, she is enthusiastic and full of energy just what the TLE team required.

SPANNABIS BARCELONA TLE is proud to have its first ever event at the Spannabis exposition in Barcelona. It is one of the biggest events in the European cannabis industry and will be a great place to show off our new Hemp product range. We will be accompanied by our beautiful CBD models Cammie Andrews and Sasha Lingorski, alongside my PA and marketing team. Cannot wait! Follow us on Instagram #theleaftlc to keep up to date with events.

CBD for HEALTH & FITNESS with DYNAMIC GYM Working with the Jujitsu team lead by Charlye Vivas at Dynamic we are analysing the benefits that CBD has on the body and the effects it has on your performance whilst training. Visit us at Dynamic to see if we can work a program that will benefit you and bring your body into Homeostasis and optimum fitness. Any enquires please feel free to contact us at TLE … Belief in the leaf.

Bikini Body

YOU PROBABLY HAVEN’T EVEN THOUGHT ABOUT THE SUMMER YET. I KNOW, I’m Aga. Physical activity has always been an important part of my life since I was 6 years old. Sport and my interest in nutrition led me to discover how to live a healthy life and maintain a fit body without having to obsess about it too much. I’m an ISSA (International Sport Science Association in USA) licensed Fitness Coach & a ISAF (Institute of Health and Physical Activity in Spain) Fitness Personal Trainer and a certified pre and post-partum Fitness Coach by Oh! Baby Fitness.

IT SEEMS LIKE A LONG WAY AWAY. WE ARE STILL IN WINTER - IF YOU CAN CALL IT WINTER OVER HERE!

Anyway, there are still a few months before it’s time to start thinking about bikinis. Wait a moment, BIKINI? Am I ready? Many women fill with fear when they even hear the word bikini, but it doesn’t need to be scary!

Remember the world is not perfect, we don’t need to be perfect. But wanting to be proud and show off the body you worked hard for months to achieve, that is also ok! So if you have always dreaded the thought of bikini time but deep down you would love to walk proudly along the beach showing off your hard work, then this year you can make it happen.

I decided to focus on future mums and those who have just become mums. I know that many women would like to stay physically active during their pregnancy but are unsure what type of exercise would be suitable and safe for themselves and their baby and many mums want to regain their figure after giving birth but have no time to go to the gym. So I created FitMama to hopefully assist you in your transformation into a sexy & happy FIT MUM. I want to show you that to get there and then keep it up doesn’t have to be only strict diets or hard workouts at the gym. It can be a lifestyle change, one that you can hang onto and once you get there you’ll never want to leave!

52

A couple of months before the summer season begins you will notice you start to see perfect bikini bodies everywhere! Street posters, magazine covers, gym announcements, shop windows... everywhere!

CHOOSE AN ACTIVITY YOU LIKE AND THAT SUITS YOUR DAILY ROUTINE

If you think it is still early and that you have plenty of time before the summer season starts, unfortunately you are wrong. This is the best time to start your bikini body operation. It is almost impossible, and very unhealthy, to achieve any visible results in one month, so don’t think twice and start today!

SO, WHERE DO I BEGIN? First of all, go through all your kitchen cupboards and throw away any naughty food and snacks. No point in tempting yourself! If it’s not there, you won’t eat it. Eating clean is a must if you want to get results. Forget about any sweetened drinks and keep alcohol to a minimum. Avoid fried and any processed food.

MAKE YOUR DIET FULL OF VEGGIES AND PROTEIN AND… GET YOUR BODY MOVING! Choose an activity you like and that suits your daily routine - the place you live, your working hours etc. Ideally you should do something 6 days a week. So combine 3 (or more) fitness workouts (at the gym or at home) with fast walking, running or riding a bike through the rest of the week. Make sure you keep your body moving as much as possible so your metabolism works properly and so you burn the calories you intake throughout the day. It is very simple: you gain weight by storing fat if you intake more calories than you are able to burn. Worth keeping in mind your body is made 70% in the kitchen and 30% in the gym, so no matter how hard you train if you are still eating sweets and treats you will struggle to see results. Wondering what exercises you should focus on to shape your bikini body? Well, you shouldn’t skip any part, you want to train all your body so every part is toned. But there is always some trouble areas that you may need to work harder on. Maybe it’s your belly, your buttocks or your thighs. There are a huge variety of ab exercises and nowadays it is easy to find new ideas on the internet. Or if you go to the gym, simply ask a trainer to give you some inspiration. Also remember that lifting heavy weights WON’T make you look bulky, as most women think. But it will help you reach your goals sooner. What you need is a MOTIVATION. Believe me, it will pay off. Just stick to a healthy routine from today and you will be surprised at the transformation your body takes over the next three months, leaving you to show off your hard work this summer at the beach and leaving you feeling physically and mentally strong! Finally, if you haven’t worked out before please make sure you get a full medical check-up before you start any high intensity training.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

Let `s Roll with it Decade after decade, hair rollers have played a pivotal role in defining iconic styles. This month Jonathan talks about taking it back old school.

56

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

We are once again joined by Reflections’ celebrity hairstylist Jonathan Yeadon, whose A-List clientele includes Victoria Beckham and Simon Cowell. Jonathan is loved not only for his mindblowing colouring skills but his outrageous personality as well.

R

o llers - not a word that scares anyone these days. But back in the good old 80s, the only rollers worth talking about were perm rollers. Rollers had become a dirty word in the world of hairdressing, associated with old ladies and the purple rinse brigade. To try and rid this old fashion connotation the hair industry renamed them perm rods and with that the rollers were back! As time went on anyone who considered themselves fashionable was too busy scrunching and teasing their hair to bother with rollers anymore. Then Vidal Sassoon, (the master of precision cutting,) encouraged everyone to throw away their rollers as he championed the blow-dry. Fast forward 20 years and no selfrespecting glamour girl who loves a bit of volume, would be seen dead without her bouncy blow-dry achieved with the use of rollers. The invention of the velcro roller revolutionised the blow dry, simply because it was easy to use and looked nothing like its spikey counterpart. The velcro roller did everything the original version did, giving volume, body and a finish that a conventional blow dry never could. In my extensive spare time, (cough, cough,) I‘ve been able to give a lot of thought to the hours we spend blowdrying and putting rollers in hair. It is a given, that the best result comes from leaving the rollers in for at least two hours after the initial blow dry. So I am now putting it out there! What about doing a few more shampoo and sets girls? Have your wet hair whacked on big rollers, sit under the hood dryer for 40 minutes and then let them cool for an extra 15.. This will guarantee you the kind of body and bounce that will last till it’s washed again.

THINK BEAUTY SCHOOL DROP OUT MEETS THE KARDASHIANS. Think of how much less damage we would be doing long term to all that processed hair. Heat and traction damage are the worst culprits for wrecking your hair. If you stopped the ruthless blowdrying and instead dried it under a comfortable heat, (and yes it has to be or you will feel like your head has been set on fire,) this would HAVE to be healthier for the hair. And all you girls with wefts, weaves and extensions, there will be no pulling on the root sections, which can only be a good thing for the health and integrity of the hair and scalp. I am quite fancying creating a Drying Room or a Drying Lounge. Big comfy chairs with mini manicure tables attached, which would allow the clients to maximise their time and take advantage of the other beauty services on offer. It would be a hive of hard-hat hair dryers, where women are abuzz with excitement, browsing magazines, enjoying some good old girly gossip as heat from the dryers give their curls lift

and volume. The payoff - voluminous curls that rival any glossy Hollywood tabloid. Think Beauty School Drop Out meets The Kardashians. We, like many other salons, only have one conventional hooded dryer, but were this to catch on, who knows. I am all for moving forward but sometimes the old ways were the best. Come on girls give it a go. Ta-Ra Love Jonathan

PORSCHE TAKES THEIR ICONIC 911 TO NEW HEIGHTS

MOTORING AUTHOR, RACING DRIVER AND PHOTO-JOURNALIST IAN KUAH REPORTS ON THE

PORSCHE 992 CARRERA S

87

TORQUE TALK

E

ach generation of Porsche’s rear-engine 911 has earned praise for the progress made over its predecessor, with reviewers sometimes noting how hard it would be to make the new car any better. Yet Porsche continues to raise the bar, so here we are again saying this about the 992, the eighth generation 911. The 911 Carrera bodywork choices are simpler this time round; wide body or wide body. To put this in perspective, while the Targa body style was added to the Coupe in 1967, with the Cabriolet following in 1983, the option of normal or Turbo look on models all but the Targa began with the Carrera 3.2, and rear or four-wheel-drive with the 964 that succeeded it. However, the keen take-up of the Turbo width option, not to mention its use by the GT, GT RS and R models, means that rationalisation to produce the latest 911 in just the 40mm wider form makes perfect economic sense. Apart from reduced tooling costs and simpler production the 992 also benefits from better driving dynamics and a more purposeful stance across the board. This more aggressive stance is aided and abetted by rear wheels an inch larger in diameter than the fronts. First seen on the 918 Spyder, the use of 21-inch rear wheels with 20-inch fronts is a visual trick that rebalances the tendency for the wider rear wheel arches to make same diameter wheels appear smaller. The new tail treatment is distinguished by its thin full width lighting strip, which is a design cue worn by every current Porsche model. The active rear wing

88

is now an integral part of the rear bodywork. Aerodynamically this is a more satisfactory solution, since it is further back and full width when deployed. The twin vertically aligned high level brake lights on the vertical bars of the engine bay grille are also unique and distinctive. A slightly larger car all round, the 992 is also 50kg heavier overall than the 991.2. But this is not a structural issue since the greater use of aluminium has actually reduced the weight of the body-in-white by 20kg. The devil is in the additional comfort features, driver aid systems, and the exhaust particulate filter required by the latest EU emissions regulations. The 992’s instrument pack is a landmark in the annuls of 911 history, Porsche finally ditching the analogue instrument pack in favour of electronic displays. However, the big rev counter remains the analogue centrepiece, and is all that remains when you switch off the ignition and the readouts on either side go dark.

“The dashboard has reverted to the horizontal layout of the early 911s as opposed to the 996/997 era where the centre console and a sat-nav screen made the centre of the dashboard more vertical,” says Peter Varga, Head of Exterior Design for the 911. The new 10.9-inch widescreen display is pretty intuitive to use, and we like the quality feel and precision of the five shortcut switches positioned under the screen. We also like the big, clear “M” for Manual button behind the small transmission lever that locks the transmission in the ratio you choose with the paddle shifter. This is important as the PDK gearbox software will otherwise automatically shift up or down even in Sport Plus mode. The seats in our two test cars were of the same style, but one had full leather while the other fabric centre panels. Both proved equally comfortable, but there is no doubt that fabric is warmer in winter and cooler in summer, and it holds you better on track.

THE HUGE ADVANCES IN CHASSIS, ENGINE, TRANSMISSION, AERODYNAMICS, AND ELECTRONIC DRIVER AIDS MAKE THE 992 C ARRERA SIGNIFIC ANTLY FASTER AND MORE COMFORTABLE THAN ITS IMMEDIATE PREDECESSOR

TORQUE TALK

89

TORQUE TALK

At 1,360 kg the new 992 Carrera 2S is almost double the weight of the original 130hp, 2.0 litre 911 of 1964. But with 450hp on tap it is exactly 50% more potent than the 930 Turbo of 1978. Bigger turbochargers mean greater turbo lag, right? Normally yes, but the Porsche engineers have to all intents and purposes banished turbo lag from their 9A2 Evo 2,981cc flat-six motor. Whether you demand instant thrust to rocket away from the lights, engage in a rapid overtake, or simply come back on the throttle after lifting off this engine has all its bases covered. The repositioning of more efficient intercoolers along with perfectly matched sizing of the larger turbines and impellers in the uprated turbochargers has done a lot to both increase airflow and reduce backpressure. Meanwhile, the brand new eight-speed PDK twin-clutch transmission is the perfect partner for this lusty forced aspirated engine. Its closely stacked gears provide a gear for every occasion, and where each ratio ends the next instantly takes over to keep the torque-rich motor on the boil. The tall eighth ratio makes for relatively relaxed highway cruising, and with 120km/h corresponding to around 1,600rpm for instance, a tank of fuel goes even further than before. A manual gearbox will be along in a few months as the entrylevel transmission. With 530Nm of torque peaking at just 2,300rpm and maintained all the way to 5,000rpm, the 9A2 Evo flat six punches hard low down but also keenly revs out to 7,500rpm with all 450 horses present and accounted for at 6,500rpm.

A strong low-end punch and a soaring, feral top end delivers the best of both worlds, and makes for impressive flexibility with no loss of the distinctive flat six character. Around town you can treat the 992 like a normal car and amble along riding the stout torque curve, or punch it hard on the open road and get real supercar performance in reply. The 911 Carrera’s performance repertoire has never been broader. The stopwatch numbers are impressive too. Thanks to its perfect traction the 4WD Carrera 4S with Sport Chrono Package leaps off the line to hit 100km/h in just 3.3 (C2 3.4 sec) seconds. But after that the extra weight and frictional losses of the 4WD system take their toll, and 160km/h comes up in 8.0 sec (C2 7.8 sec), and 200km/h reached in 12.7 sec (C2 12.4 sec). The C4’s 306 km/h (C2 307 km/h) Vmax is also slightly lower. I drove the Carrera 2S on the road and wet handling course, and the Carrera 4S on track, and their perceptible differences were exactly as I had surmised, but with an added twist or two thrown in. The 911 has always gained a significant traction advantage from having its engine over the rear wheels, and in the old days, spinning the wheels of a naturally aspirated 2WD 911 on bone dry tarmac was a pretty tall order without being brutal with the clutch.

90

TORQUE TALK

Now, despite its massive 11.5J x 21-inch rear wheels shod with 305/30ZR21 Pirelli spec rubber the latest Carrera 2S will even wiggle its hips in second gear under hard acceleration in a straight line on a dry road. You can thank the huge slug of turbocharged torque for this, and it helps to make the rear-driven car more playful for the keen driver. I was also pleased to find that the latest electronic control suite has been honed to make Sport Plus useable on the road without reservations. In 997 days this setting was far too edgy for road use, triggering downshifts at the slightest provocation. It only came into its own on track where you are either hard on the throttle or hard on the brakes. This latest incarnation of Sport Plus has been to finishing school and graduated with a far more evenhanded personality that no longer forces aggressive downshifts when you slow down in part throttle situations on the road. Yet the engine, transmission and active damping are no less sharp when rising to the occasion on a challenging road. A key feature of the revised suspension is the new generation of active dampers developed in co-operation with Bilstein. Despite the big, ultra low profile tyres, the ride is absorbent and comfortable for a sports car,

yet body THE 911 control CARRERA’S is impeccable even PERFORMANCE when you REPERTOIRE HAS step up the pace in ComNEVER BEEN fort mode. Individual allows you BROADER. to programme in personal preferences like Sport for the engine and gearbox and Comfort for the damping, a combination most people will find engaging yet comfortable for daily road use. As you would expect of a sports car with big tires the 992 is not going to challenge a limo for low rolling noise. But apart from on particularly rough tarmac the tyre noise is typical for this class of car and it is not a major component

in the ambient noise spectrum on a smooth road. On the subject of sound, we were wondering what effect the new EU mandatory particulate emissions filter would have on the exhaust signature. As two Carreras and one GT3 RS pace car went past us on full chat on every lap session it was very clear that the Carrera has a deeper chested flat six soundtrack when compared to the screaming naturally aspirated GT3 RS. The good news is that the engine noise that reaches the cabin is a fine mix of flat six sounds from the air and water-cooled 911 ‘archives’ overlaid by some unique new induction and exhaust keynotes. I am sure 911 buffs will approve. Right from the first bend on the very technical Circuito Ricardo Tormo near Valencia it was clear that the 992 is something special. In fact it would have to be since we had to keep up with the GT3 RS pace car pedalled by one of Porsche’s pro instructors at the helm.

91

TORQUE TALK

Helped by the rear axle steering the front end is very pointy, especially under trail braking and you feel the really good grip the moment you turn in and load the front tyres. The wider track and new engine mounts reduce weight transfer and the lack of unsettling weight transfer makes the car feel really stable through a turn. The confidence window is simply huge.

The steering of the 992 Carrera 2S is a fraction purer and more tactile steering than the 4S, as well as a touch lighter, but this is a matter of degree. Given a choice I would take the Carrera 4S for its towering abilities as a 365 day daily driver, and the more playful Carrera 2S for the track.

Whatever you might say about turbocharged motors there is no question that their superior swell of low-end torque makes for a faster exit speed from a given bend, traction permitting. Good traction is a traditional 911 strength that comes from its rear-engine configuration, and with fourwheel-drive as icing on the cake, the Carrera 4S is formidable on both road and track.

The act of selecting Wet Mode is a driver choice, an important factor in an enthusiasts’ car like the 911. The prompt that asks the driver in the first instance is connected to sensors at the back of the front wheel arch housings tuned to the distinctive sounds of water and snow being thrown up by the tires.

From the get go the GT3 RS pace car could not get away. It would take a circuit with long fast sweepers like the Nürburgring for the GT3 RS to use its aero downforce and 50hp top end to advantage, but Ricardo Tormo is not such a track.

The rationale behind this is that the rain sensor only detects drops of water on the front windscreen when it is raining, but not when the ground is wet or covered in snow.

Porsche provided a sprinkler equipped wet handling course next to the racetrack, and it was very clear from doing a couple of laps in Sport Mode and then Wet Mode just how effective the system is at keeping you from a big whoops! Applying throttle exiting a bend in Sport Mode saw the back end step out instantly, requiring an armful of opposite lock to catch. Fine for an experienced driver on track but heart stopping for a normal one, and not nice for anyone on a dark, wet night on an unfamiliar road. With Wet Mode engaged the scenario was quite different, the softer throttle response reigning in the build-up of torque, with slip detected and neatly contained before a big oversteer moment could develop.

The 991.2 GT3 RS has 500hp at a screaming 8,250rpm and 460Nm of torque at 6,000rpm. And it weighs about 140kg less than the Carrera 4S I was driving. However, the greater low down punch of its twin-turbo motor and 4WD take a big bite out of those advantages allowing the 992 Carrera 4S to hold its own. And as our test cars were also fitted with PCCB brakes, the only significant advantage the GT3 RS had was its stickier Michelin Cup tyres. The video footage taken by the new Porsche Track App shows just how closely we were able to follow the GT3 RS, whose driver later admitted that he was not far off the limit at the end of our session. For the record, we posted a fraction over 1:55 min after three laps. Porsche told us that nine-time F1 winner Mark Webber had been there a few days before to try the Carrera 2S. He recorded 1:48 min on his first lap, and went on to stop the clock at 1:45 min. The Track App video of his lap showed his banzai lap, which in typical F1 style involved using every inch of the painted kerbs and sometimes more to minimise his steering angle through each bend. A big eye opener was the lateral g force element of the Track App, which recorded us pulling 1.2 to 1.3 g in some of the bends. This is an indication of just how good the latest Porsche specification Pirelli street tyres are. And like the awesome PCCB ceramic brakes the new Pirellis seem unfazed by track work, maintaining the 992’s crisp handling lap after lap. One debate that enthusiasts have been having since the 964 Carrera 4 appeared in 1989 is the purity of steering feel versus the rear-driven car. This issue has only become more heated since the advent of electric power steering on the 991. First things first, and Porsche’s electric power steering is no better or worse than its hydraulic system, and that is as good as it gets this side of the Cayman GT4.

THE NEW 992 CARRERA MAINTAINS THIS TRADITION OF CONTINUOUS EVOLUTION, AND IN SO DOING RAISES THE BAR EVEN HIGHER FOR ANY WOULD BE CHALLENGER.

TORQUE TALK

The system works fairly unobtrusively, gently bringing the car back into line when mechanical grip is lost. It is quite unlike the ‘hard cut’ you normally experience when ESP jumps in to save you from the laws of physics. As Daniel Lepschi, the engineer in charge of driving dynamics for the 911 and 718 models explained, “By softening throttle response and putting the other driver aid systems on alert this pro-active system minimises the slide at the point where it is developing. Because only minimal forces have to be dealt with the ‘save’ is far smoother and less intrusive compared to the aggressive intervention needed by ESP to retrieve the vehicle from a greater angle.”

The huge advances in chassis, engine, transmission, aerodynamics, and electronic driver aids make the 992 Carrera significantly faster and more comfortable than its immediate predecessor, as well as some of the past super sportscars from Porsche’s own stable. With an official 7:25 min Nürburgring lap time under its belt, the 992 Carrera is 7.0 sec faster than the Carrera GT of 2004, and equals the 991 GT3 of 2015! The counterpoint is that the new Carrera 2S and 4S are dynamically the most versatile 911s ever, the new active

damping improving everyday comfort at other end of the spectrum. In addition you can now have every driver aid offered on other Porsche models, apart from the Head-up display. There is a distinct advantage in being able to continuously hone a design for 55 years compared to starting with a clean sheet of paper every time. The new 992 Carrera maintains this tradition of continuous evolution, and in so doing raises the bar even higher for any would be challenger.

Off the beaten track...

Sri Lanka O

ur second stop on the travel itinerary was Sri Lanka; a country we had added to our wish list of places to visit (that’s as close to an itinerary as we will ever muster) when we began planning the trip.

however we were advised that the initial (four hour) train ride was not particularly interesting or picturesque and so we would be better off making our way first to a town called Kandy and taking the train from there.

An old friend of ours had offered us a place to stay in Arugam Bay on the East coast. The surf there is consistent as is the warm weather and it had been an age since we had spent time with him, so we were keen on all counts.

We duly did so by booking a taxi to collect us from the airport. I had arranged this online and had to simply hope that it would come to fruition on arrival. It all worked out perfectly well, the driver was not especially friendly or amenable but the van was big and comfy enough for all five of us and our baggage to relax for the four or so hour drive.

Having flown in to Colombo we were confronted with an interesting list of options on how to get to Arugam Bay. One, take a minivan with a driver all the way (literally) across the country, which tots up to around an 8-9 hour drive (provided you leave in the evening and swerve the daytime traffic). Two, take a bus, which would probably take you a few days if you were lucky. Three, train. I had researched into the train routes throughout Sri Lanka prior to our arrival so I was more than eager to take this option. The countryside was described as idyllic, a must to be seen first hand, or eye, and the pictures I had seen online were simply stunning. So option three was voted for by the whole family. It is possible to take a train between Colombo (the capital) airport and a town closer to the East coast (trains do not reach as far as Arugam Bay)

112

Relax I did NOT. Holy-hang-on-toyour-arm-rests and wish you weren‘t looking out the window without blinking for four hours. The way to drive in Sri Lanka is as follows; hug the bumper in front until there is a ‘gap’ (meaning only a few mopeds and tuk-tuks and perhaps one car wide worth of vehicles heading towards you) in the oncoming cacophony of traffic and overtake before the enormous truck coming at you reaches you - it doesn’t really matter if it happens to be on a bend or not, just go for it and see what happens. If you don‘t quite make it, brake hard and swerve back behind previous bumper until another ‘opportunity’ arises. Oh, and don‘t forget to beep all the while to let everyone know what you might

or might not do next. Then once you have completed said overtaking mission, drive as fast as you can until you reach the next bumper up ahead, which will probably take around four seconds. And repeat. For four hours. I may have cried a little bit. Anyway, we made it through township after village after dusty lane after rows and rows of all the interesting ways and methods of life in little western Sri Lankan towns, and having stopped at a very typical tourist type stop for lunch (as in, not your average Sri Lankan choice) we eventually arrived unscathed in Kandy. Having only really seen small towns and villages thus far it was quite the shock to

be confronted with this bustling city set on a lake. We checked into our rooms and went wandering around the lake which was quite beautiful. We spotted monitor lizards cruising about on the banks, plenty of fish, and of course a plethora of monkeys rampaging around. We only had planned one night here and had hoped to take the six hour train ride the following morning to Ella, a small mountain town in the mid-east of the country. Up bright and early we set off for the station to catch the morning train to Ella. I had read online which tickets we needed to get, however, on arrival at the station, they did not offer me any other ticket than the second class carriage. We were going to opt for first class seeing as it was so cheap and potentially had air-con, but in hindsight I am SO glad we weren‘t able to as our memories were shaped by the freedom of the open doors and windows in our over-crowded carriage. We all took turns to sit at the edge of the door, dangle our feet out and literally breathe in the landscape outside. It was utterly magical, you wouldn‘t have thought this would be the reaction on first glance as we had no seats (bit tough on a family of five you say?) or particularly much standing space either once all our luggage had been piled in amongst other backpackers, a few locals and a smattering of Japanese tourists. So, we simply sat on the bags, turning them into couches and ‘beds’ as and when they were needed, at times with heads or legs utilising the luggage cubby holes in order to stretch out a little! The rest of the time was spent dangling. This is an excerpt from my diary written during the train ride:

Needless to say I recommend this train ride to anyone travelling in Sri Lanka. On arrival in Ella, a super-cute travellers haven stop-off, we scoured the little strip of bars and cafes and hostels for a place to stay. Easily done. We checked in and made a beeline for the most popular place in town Cafe Chill - good vibes, decent fare and only slightly touristy prices. We took a hike 6km down the road to the big waterfall where we dived right in, well, walked right under the pounding water having seen an elephant (sadly on the back of a truck), a mongoose, a basilisk lizard, a couple of fried bats (stuck to electrical wires) and more

monkeys than you could shake a stick at (some we had to in order to shoo them away). Next day saw the final leg of our trek across Sri Lanka to reach our destination for the next month Arugam Bay. We took a taxi again, this is an affordable option and you can wisely haggle the price down. This ride only took two and a half hours and was far more peaceful (barely any traffic), as was the driver. Arriving at Arugam Bay (or ‘A Bay’ as the Australians like to call it) was

so easy, you could melt right in here without a worry. But that is another story well worth telling…until next time.

About nine years ago, a good friend was heavily pregnant, expecting a boy. He was to be the very first of a new generation arriving into our circle of close mates and both his parents are brilliant human beings so expectations were high.

Over a decaf coffee a couple of weeks before D-day, this friend told me while beaming proudly that he would be called Kai and whilst I feigned a smile, inside I cringed. I'd only ever known two Kais and both had been dodgy little toerags. One was an outright wrong'un, up to all sorts... The other, though clearly a live wire, had a certain cheeky charisma. We played football together and at about 13 years of age, went on our first “mate date” to Dreamland Amusement Park in Margate. It didn't end well....

APOLOGIES TO ALL TREVORS, COLINS AND NORMANS READING THIS BUT AT LEAST YOU'RE NOT CALLED IAN.... APOLOGIES TO ALL IANS READING THIS. Queuing up for a ride, a jittery Kai kept pointing to a group of Orthodox Jews ahead of us, maniacally commenting that their skullcaps looked like the little rubber poppers we played with in the days before Grand Theft Auto. There was no real anti-Semitism in his observation, just an inappropriately loud and excited fascination with a novel type of hat. Already feeling very awkward and trying to steer his attention elsewhere, I physically bolted when the queue doubled back past us and Kai lent over the railings, shouted “Gis' a go on your popper” and tried to pop an orthodox Jewish man's kibbah??! As a young teen I was already what you'd call a...err...”GOBshite”, but I realised I was out of my depth with Kai and out first mate date was our last. So when my pregnant friend said that name some 15 years later, it nudged at a subconscious prejudice I'd long held – ALL Kais were little shits. It wasn't just Kais. I'd long been prejudiced against my own name. As a somewhat “ethniccy” looking half-Mexican with close family called Mauricio, Rafa and Diego whom I Idolised, Ian just seemed a bit.... beige. Growing up, there were no cool Ians to emulate and back then, most young boys wanted to be “cool”. The only other Ian in my school was definitely NOT cool.

er

When I left home at 19 and threw myself into the hedonism of Brighton, several new friends and party pals told me I didn't strike them as an Ian, which I took as a massive compliment. The first time I returned to my mum's I was determined to know why she chose such a dweebish name, but also prepared for a convincing or at least solidly sentimental explanation...

from Friends”. When adolescents stared at their Marilyn Monroe posters, they were probably trying not to think of their nan, so it's good the quintessential blonde bombshell switched from Norma Jeane. Legendary tough guy John Wayne was once Marion Morrison but decided to make the change so that his name didn't remain fucking Marion.

“I honestly don't know, I've never really liked it. Why don't you change it to Ryan?...” was the immediate and unexpected response - clearly I wasn't the only one who'd regretted it over the years. Much as I'd have preferred Ryan (or pretty much anything else), I couldn't face now asking my mates to “Call me Ryan” just for them to laugh and say “PISS OFF Ian”.

Muddying the waters somewhat is Englebert Humperdink (a name I wouldn't even swap Ian for..) who concluded his original Arnold Dorsey was too embarrassing. That example notwithstanding, there's a clear trajectory from crap, weird or unsexy to fame-friendly, charismatic and memorable. It makes me wonder if some of the more “famous” Ians (it's a shallow pool) began life with something even shitter?!?....

I told myself it didn't really matter (and it doesn't) but for me the name remains universally unsexy. My cruel but creative big brother corroborated this when I turned 30 by painstakingly making me a bespoke“Wall of Ians” framed collage. Featuring 30 notable Ians, best of the bunch were Ian Wright and Ian McKellen, but since i'd never aimed to emulate an Arsenal player or gay wizard, I found little to hang my hat on. The other 28 mainly consisted of child murderers, politicians and Ian Beale. We make whole assumptions about character based on names. Of course you can't coast by on a name alone (unless it's Windsor), but in a quietly ruthless social hierarchy, a good one can certainly give you an edge. Watch any Hollywood blockbuster and you'd be hard-pressed to find a sexy, sophisticated action hero called Trevor but throw a dart in the air at a model train convention and chances are it'll embed itself in one's bald patch, narrowly missing three Colins and a Norman. Apologies to all Trevors, Colins and Normans reading this but at least you're not called Ian.... apologies to all Ians reading this. Celebs know the score. At least Maurice Joseph Micklewhite (Michael Caine) does. As did Eileen Regina Edwards (Shania Twain) and Stevland Judkins (Stevie Wonder). Elton John might have proved a less convincing Rocket Man had he stayed Reginald Dwight and actor Albert Brooks dropped Einstein, probably realising that was a tough act to follow. Doris Day switched from Doris Kappelhof and the difference one word made to her career was like night and Kappelhof. Had Jennifer Aniston stayed as Jennifer Linn Anastassakis, she might not have been referred to ever since as “Rachel

I don't know whether to be sad or take hope from the fact that no birth in the UK in 2017 was registered with the name Ian. Probably very few this millennia. I take zero offence, it's just a Darwinian case of natural selection. Although endangered, even pandas can be encouraged to mate, but for the preservation of my kind, it's not just a case of convincing someone to have sex with an Ian, but to then inflict that name on their spawn??...I just can't see it happening.

WHEN ADOLESCENTS STARED AT THEIR MARILYN MONROE POSTERS, THEY WERE PROBABLY TRYING NOT TO THINK OF THEIR NAN, SO IT'S GOOD THE QUINTESSENTIAL BLONDE BOMBSHELL SWITCHED FROM NORMA JEANE. The reality is unless an Ian does something absolutely fucking spectacular, by 2090, we'll be looking at a pretty much Ian-less society. The Hislops, Duncan-Smiths and Bothans long since returned to the dust of a planet which never truly wanted them, perhaps small bands of OAP Ians will still wander the wastelands a-la Mad Max, scavenging scraps from all the Arlos, Jaxons and Madisons whilst boring them with talk of self-assessment tax returns. Soon after, even they will be gone. The age of Ian will be over. Bring it on. Ryan Greenland is a writer and photographer www.iangreenland.uk

Padre Peter, cleric for wedding ceremonies and regular contributor to SOCIETY Magazine

arch is the month which contains two of the patron Saints commemorated in the British Isles. On March 1st we have Saint David, or Dewi Sant, as he is called in his native homeland. He is the only British patron saint who actually belongs to the country which he represents. The leek, as an emblem of Wales, dates from a battle fought on Saint David’s day, when Welsh soldiers pulled leeks from local gardens to put in their caps to distinguish themselves from the enemy. Shakespeare has Henry V proudly wearing a leek, “I wear it for a memorable honour; for I am Welsh…” Saint David died around the year 601 AD. During his lifetime he founded no fewer than twelve monasteries, where extreme asceticism was practised. Monks had to pull the plough themselves without draught animals, and were only allowed to drink water and eat bread with salt and herbs. The evenings were to be spent in prayer, reading and writing. Bishop Rhigyfarch (10571099 AD) of St. Davids counted Glastonbury Abbey among the churches David founded, which included the donation of an altar decorated with a great sapphire, which Henry VIII of England confiscated from the abbey a thousand years later. His best-known miracle is said to have taken place at the Synod of Brefi. In order to be heard by a great crowd, the ground beneath him rose to form a hill, where the village of Llanddewi Brefi now stands, although the point has been made that such a miracle creating a new hill was a trifle superfluous in that part of Wales!

118

It is very probable that Saint Patrick, “Apostle of the Irish”, whose day we celebrate on March 17th, was also Welsh. When he was about 16, he was captured by Irish pirates and taken as a slave to Ireland, where for six years he looked after animals before escaping. His experiences had turned him to religion, and after some study he

became a cleric. Patrick himself records that he had a vision a few years after returning home: “I saw a man coming, as it were from Ireland. His name was Victoricus, and he carried many letters, and he gave me one of them. I read the heading: “The Voice of the Irish”. As I began the letter, I imagined in that moment that I heard the voice of those very people who were near the wood of Foclut, which is beside the western sea— and they cried out, as with one voice: “We appeal to you, holy servant boy, to come and walk among us.” He returned to Ireland. Little is known of the places where he worked, but in later life he served as a bishop, and by the seventh century he had already come to be revered as the patron saint of Ireland. It is thought that he died around the year 460 AD. On April 23rd England celebrates Saint George. Georgia, Malta, Portugal, Aragon, and Cataluña also recognise Saint George as their Patron. But Pope Gelasius I (Pope 492-496 AD) put it well when he stated that George was among those saints

“WHOSE NAMES ARE JUSTLY REVERENCED AMONG MEN, BUT WHOSE ACTIONS ARE KNOWN ONLY TO GOD.” Paul VI (Pope 1963-1978 AD) took perhaps a more realistic view when he downgraded the saint’s festival to a mere “Memorial”. For the fact remains that in spite of a wealth of tradition and story, very little is known regarding Saint

George. The learned hagiographer Donald Attwater wrote “No historical particulars of his life have survived, ... The widespread veneration for St George as a soldier saint from early times had its centre in Palestine at Diospolis, now Lydda. St George was apparently martyred there, at the end of the third or the beginning of the fourth century; that is all that can be reasonably surmised about him.” The early 20th-century Catholic Encyclopedia takes the position that there are no grounds for doubting the historical existence of Saint George, “but no faith can be placed in the attempts that have been made to fill up any of the details of his history.” Despite this, he is venerated by Christians and Muslims alike, and the legend of his slaying the dragon is deeply embedded in popular folklore. During the Hundred Years War (1337-1453) the English armies often invoked Saint George in a battle cry, and when in 1348 Edward III of England established his Order of the Garter he put it under the banner of St. George. Sharing him with Greece, Russia, Rumania and Barbados, Saint Andrew is, of course, the Patron Saint of Scotland. His cult was popular as early as 750 AD with his feast day on the 30th November. The brother of Saint Peter, he appears several times in the New Testament and has been (somewhat dubiously) accredited with the writing of Saint John’s Gospel. Crucified by the Romans at Patras in Greece,

during the 13th century the belief arose that it was on an “X” shaped cross; a “saltire”. Hundreds of years later, his remains were moved to Constantinople and in the 13th century to Amalfi in southern Italy where they remain. Legend has it that a Greek monk, St Regulus, was ordered in a vision to take a few relics of St Andrew to the ‘ends of the earth’ for safe keeping. He set off on a sea journey, eventually landing on the coast of Fife at a settlement which is now the modern town of St Andrews. St Andrew was first recognised as patron saint of Scotland in 1320 at the signing of the “Declaration of Arbroath”. This was an appeal to the Pope by Scottish noblemen asserting Scotland’s independence from England. His relics, a tooth, kneecap, arm and some fingers, were destroyed in the 16th century during the Scottish Reformation, but in 1879 the Archbishop of Amalfi gifted St Andrew’s shoulder blade to St Mary’s Cathedral in Edinburgh. Pope Paul VI donated further relics in 1969.

ith the rise in holidaymakers seeking total wellness from their breaks away, yoga retreats are now abounding. I can open Instagram at any given time and am guaranteed a hit of plentiful yoga retreat opportunities from dozens of my favourite instructors in the space of a couple of scrolls. We are, effectively, spoilt for choice. 2019 therefore, is the time to get exclusive with your choice of wellness retreat. Ibiza is over, juice cleanses are done; it’s time to look off the retreat-beaten track to find a holiday that is sure to truly over deliver on all levels, to fulfil your desire for luxury, wellness, and a sustainable feel-good experience. Enter Reclaim Yourself, the retreat company owned by the venerable Jools Sampson, who takes extra pride in the little details to deliver exceptional yoga retreats in

extraordinary places. One particular destination highlight on Jools’ retreat calendar this year is five days in the spectacular Azores. To describe its unspoilt serenity as the Atlantic’s ‘best kept secret’ would be something of an understatement. Of course, the ultimate stand-out retreat experience is built on far more than fantastic locations; and Reclaim Yourself has all angles covered. Jools unites quite a team of wellness aficionados to achieve an unparalleled level of expertise, which sets their trips apart from the cookie-cutter masses. At Azores, yoga is hosted by the esteemed Adam Hustler. And me? I am the Azores chef and recipe creator. My name is Bettina Campolucci, plant based chef and author of 5 star Amazon rated cookbook, Happy Food and I have joined forces with Jools to ensure meal and snack times are a healthy

on the BLOCKCHAIN AS WE HAVE DISCUSSED IN THE PAST TWO EDITIONS OF SOCIETY MARBELLA, BLOCKCHAIN TECHNOLOGY GOES WAY BEYOND BITCOIN...

T

oday’s subject is why I personally care about Blockchain and why I feel strongly about getting the info out there, because it could positively affect you, me and everyone around us.

keep up with the costly requirements and high demand. The mere presence of big retailers in the supply chain increases pressure on all other members to guarantee food safety.

I find it crazy in this day and age that all we need to survive and thrive is grown naturally, yet there are food shortages in some places and obscene food waste in other places. Something has to change now.

Food safety is considered a public good, because even a small error could cause severe harm to all participants in the supply chain (i.e., companies and consumers), significantly affecting public health.

WHETHER YOU’RE A MEAT EATER, VEGETARIAN OR VEGAN, THE FOOD SUPPLY CHAIN AFFECTS THE QUALITY OF FOOD THAT ENDS UP ON YOUR PLATE AND IT AFFECTS YOUR ENVIRONMENT. In the past 50 years, the South of Spain has become a major horticultural supplier within Europe. 40% of all the vegetables consumed in Europe come from Spain, purchased by huge distribution chains like Aldi, Carrefour, and Tesco. These retailers demand high production quality standards in every area. Producing safe, ethical and sustainable food (and then proving those claims) are some of the main challenges for farmers right now. Small and medium sized family farms in Malaga particularly are seeing a negative impact of agri-food globalization, with 43% of them shutting down over the past decade, unable to

122

A new level of transparency is needed to guarantee the safety of the products people consume and more can be done to equip companies with real-time traceability of products within national or global supply chains. This is where Blockchain is stepping into the spotlight and already being used in other parts of the world to improve the food supply chain for certain products. For instance, Walmart in the US, is now insisting all its leafy green salad suppliers are signed up to its Blockchain application so it can provide end-to-end traceability in seconds, rather than days. When Spain adopts Blockchain into the food supply chain, it will eliminate damaging false accusations such as the time when mass media spread false news about an E-coli outbreak in Spanish cucumbers, putting an unnecessary negative image over Spain’s produce. Blockchain would make information transparent and accessible quickly, so these accusations could be proved wrong instantly.

Since the Blockchain can safely store all kinds of information and digital files, it could also make short supply chains a more viable option for small and medium sized farms like the ones we have lost in Malaga. It’s currently not easy to create synergy with suppliers whilst keeping up with the flexibility and expectations of producing for short food supply chains. Food safety measures also differ according to where they are sold, but with Blockchain it would make it easier and cheaper for even small family farms to prove that their produce is safe, ethical and sustainable. Not to mention it would greatly assist their reputation and authenticity for sales and marketing. This would then have a positive ripple effect on retailers and other parties in the supply chain, since they could also verify the quality and authenticity. Big retailers have always sought to identify (and even control) where, how, and by whom the fresh products they purchase are produced, now smaller retailers and even restaurants could do the same. Say you own a restaurant that specializes in serving top quality fresh seafood. Blockchain would give you the verification that not only is the fish as fresh as claimed, but that it’s been stored and transported correctly. You can see its temperature history and details of the original catch.

COSTA CUISINE

Or if you own a shop that sells ethically sourced or organic-only products, you would have access to a wider selection of producers on the Blockchain and be able to verify the authenticity of their claims as easily as browsing Amazon and checking customer feedback. Even if you don’t own a business, imagine buying a chicken for your Sunday roast dinner and you could simply scan the code with your smartphone to see exactly where it came from, whether it really is organic free-range, how many stops it made to get to you, and other details about the bird’s history. If you want to know how long that bag of apples has been sitting there or how long ago your carrots were harvested, scan the code and the technology would tell you. This is where Blockchain would not only make the food supply chain transparent, it would also eliminate unnecessary waste and enable better resource management.

NO ONE SHOULD BE GOING HUNGRY WHILE THERE IS SO MUCH FOOD WASTE. Every year, a whopping 1/3 of all fresh produce is thrown away into the bin globally. IBM Food Trust is focused on addressing the food waste challenges using Blockchain to highlight where and why the waste is occurring. This will give businesses insights into the food supply chain that they have never had before. Retailers will have full visibility to judge the peak freshness of the products they purchase, so they can give their customers fresher food with a longer shelf life and reduce waste of spoiled fruit & veg.

Instead of people going hungry and food being wasted, produce will be bought and sold at the right time, with any excess already certified as safe and ethical to be donated to those who need it, instead of going in the trash. Smaller family farms can start to thrive with an easier way to authenticate and sell their produce. We finally get to see where our food comes from and make more informed choices.

Whether we buy from large supermarkets or small greengrocers Blockchain could be helping towards a transparent food supply chain that could benefit generations to come. There need not be any waste, there need not be any hunger, and we should be able to fully trust the food that we buy and eat. I look forward to more people and businesses being inspired by Blockchain so we can soon see the technology widely adopted into the food supply chains here in Spain.
