Summer Time
CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT
This month we turn the spotlight on international model and actress Summer Crosley
Model and actress Summer Crosley has graced the pages of GQ, Vogue, Elle, FHM, Esquire and Cosmopolitan but is most famous for her role on the hit show Californication and her charitable giving. This month Summer visited Marbella and Features Editor, Christie Holland had the opportunity to catch up with the American beauty to hear more about her television and modelling career as well as her dedication to helping our planet. You have received a lot of attention lately for Californication, how is that going for you? It has been absolutely wonderful, it has opened up so many doors for me and has really made me aware of who I am as a person. You really start to learn more about yourself, and it has all been for the better. So I hear you are also involved in ocean conservation? Yes I am, I travel to top beach destinations worldwide including Spain, Africa, Bali, Fiji, Hawaii, to name a few and educate people on how important it is to stop trash and pollution on the beach. It only takes a couple seconds of your time to stop and pick up a piece of litter at the beach and throw it away, if everyone could get involved it would make such an impact on what is in our ocean and outside it. So, what exactly does your program do in order to help raise awareness about beach pollution across the globe? Not only do we educate people on the importance of beach clean-up, I also have my own line of candles and other items I make, half of the proceeds of the sale go to an ocean conservation fund.

Have you always had a passion for helping with wildlife preservations and environmental conservation? Yes I have, as a model and actress I have travelled to lots of beautiful places around the world, and many of these countries do not have the education, funds or resources to even think about beach pollution and the effects is has on the ocean, so that is what has motivated me to make a difference and be more involved I know you adore all the travelling you do, but is it ever difficult being away from your family so much? Yes it is hard, but traveling is fun too! I miss my bed the most! It is always hard to get the good night’s rest you get in your own bed! SOCIETY MARBELLA wish Summer continued success and want to say a big thank you to her for dropping by to chat with us and help with our fashion shoot.

What would you pay for the price of freedom? In the exhilarating action epic, For Greater Glory, an impassioned group of men and women each make the decision to risk it all for family, faith and the very future of their country, during the 1920s Cristero War, a daring people’s revolt that rocked 20th Century North America. The day after soon-to-be valedictorian Henry Burke, Matt Bush, takes a hit of the chronic for the first time, his school principal institutes a zero tolerance drug policy and administers a mandatory drug test for all students. Henry has two options: fail and lose his college scholarship, or team up with his stoner friend Breaux to beat the system. They steal a high powered ganja from law student-turned-drug-dealer Psycho Ed, (Adrien Brody) and spike the school’s bake sale brownies, getting the whole school, faculty included, completely stoned out of their minds. With the student body getting higher and higher with every brownie, and a pissed-off Psycho Ed on their tails for stealing his stash, they must find a way to keep their half-baked plan from going up in smoke.

ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER
Nº6 MUD SWEAT AND TEARS BY BEAR GRYLLS
Bear Grylls is a man who has always sought the ultimate in adventure. Growing up on the Isle of Wight, he was taught by his father to sail and climb at an early age. Inevitably, it wasn’t long before Bear was leading out-ofbounds night-climbing missions at school. As a teenager, he found identity and purpose through both mountaineering and martial arts, which led the young adventurer to the foothills of the mighty Himalaya and a grandmaster’s karate training camp in Japan. On returning home, he embarked upon the notoriously grueling selection course for the British Special Forces to join 21 SAS, a journey that was to push him to the very limits of physical and mental endurance. Then, in a horrific free-fall parachuting accident in Africa, Bear broke his back in three places. It was touch-and-go whether he would ever walk again. However, only eighteen months later and defying doctors’ expectations, Bear became one of the youngest ever climbers to scale Everest, aged only twenty-three. But this was just the beginning of his many extraordinary adventures... Bear Grylls has survived where few would dare to go. Now, for the first time, Bear tells the story of his actionpacked life.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, based on the mash-up novel by the same name, explores the secret life of the 16th President of The United States, and the untold story that shaped the nation. Visionary filmmakers Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov (director of Wanted) bring a fresh and visceral voice to the bloodthirsty lore of the vampire, imagining Lincoln as history’s greatest hunter of the undead.

BELIEVE BY JUSTIN BIEBER
Believe is the third upcoming studio album by Canadian superstar, Justin Bieber. The young singer announced the release via Twitter in February and fans have already been treated to the first single, Boyfriend released in March 2012. Nicki Minaj, Big Sean and Ludacris feature throughout the album on the tracks, All Around the World, As Long as you Love Me and Beauty and a Beat. Justin’s mentor, Usher served as Executive Producer on the album. From September this year, Justin kicks off his US tour to promote the highly awaited, Believe.
Nº9 LOOKING FOR MYSELF BY USHER
Nº10 OVEREXPOSED BY MAROON 5
This month sees the release of pop rock band, Maroon 5’s fourth album. The band, fronted by Adam Levine, performed their new track Payphone, with Wiz Khalifa on the US version of The Voice, where Adam is a coach. Following the performance Levine commented, “Overexposed is definitely one of our most diverse and poppiest albums yet. We had a great time recording it. I can’t wait for our fans to hear the record, as well as hitting the road to play it live for everyone later this year.” Guitarist James Valentine continued, “At this point in our career, I think it was a good thing to completely mix up our process and it yielded good results, as well as a more collaborative spirit within the band…We wanted to make something that sounded contemporary with the elements of a lot of early eras of pop music. This is our most ‘pop’ record ever and we weren’t shy about really going for it.”
Usher releases his seventh studio LP this month, Looking for Myself. The talented star collaborated with Rick Ross on the track Lemme See, Pharell on Twisted, and Luke Steel on the album’s title track. For those unfamiliar with Steele, he’s from the Australian synth-pop duo Empire of the Sun. He also appeared on JayZ’s Blueprint 3 and co-wrote the track Rather Die Young on Beyoncé’s 4. When asked about his new release, Usher responded, “There’s a lot there to keep fans tuning in. It’s a ton of other experiences and a ton of other walks ... as I’ve had this long journey over the last year [and] every bit of what I’ve experienced I’ve put into a creative, artistic way… This is more artistic of an album than I’ve had in history.”
Society Marbella brings you all the gossip and glamour straight from Hollywood By Christie Holland He’s known for interviewing the rich and famous but it seems
He’s at it again. Last month, Mr Cowell announced his new celebrity judging panel for the highly anticipated second series of X Factor USA. Multiplatinum, Grammy Award-winning worldwide pop icon Britney Spears and singer, songwriter and actress Demi Lovato will join L.A. Reid and Simon Cowell in the hot seats this year. Whilst both females have experienced personal drama’s and negative publicity Mr Cowell is reportedly exceptionally excited about his new additions exclaiming, “I’m absolutely delighted Britney and Demi are joining us. Britney remains one of the biggest stars in the world, she’s talented, fascinating – and I believe she Image courtesy of Solarpix knows exactly how to spot The X Factor. Demi’s had an amazing career in music, TV and film for someone her age. She’s young, confident, and enthusiastic. I think it’s really important that she speaks to our younger audience. The new panel will be dynamic and will work really well with the changes we are making to the show.”

We expected better from you Kanye! Kim Kardashian has confirmed that her new beau, rapper, Kanye West WILL appear in the upcoming series of her reality show, Keeping up with the Kardashians. However she has vowed to be more private with this relationship than its predecessors, announcing; “I’m not going
to be taking a bubble bath and drinking champagne or on a sex swing [on camera] like Khloé and Lamar do…It’s not going to be like that (but)’if we are having dinner and he
does show up, I’m sure we’re not going to go, ‘stop the cameras!’” Although it’s baby steps, this is a startling comparison to the openness of her previous relationship with ex-husband Kris Humpries. “My heart’s a little more guarded,” she said. “I showed so much of myself in the past. You almost get embarrassed showing this big wedding, which I would have had, cameras or not. So I think you want to just guard yourself.” Maybe she is learning?

He’s never been one to keep his mouth shut and that’s part of the reason why we love him, but we can’t help notice Mr Walsh’s pro-Simon announcement has come at a rather convenient time, due to the recent confirmation of his return to this year’s show. Louis made no secret of his dislike for BBC 1 rival show The Voice and his admiration for Mr Cowell and his empire. “I think everyone thought The Voice UK would be like the US version, and it’s not. It’s dull and boring,” he exclaimed. “The X Factor is the biggest show on TV and the other shows are just copying us with their silly chairs. Simon Cowell is the king of TV, and if he’s not involved then it’s not good.” Sucking up are we Mr Walsh?

He is a keen aviator so I guess it makes for an obvious gift?! The newly engaged Miss Jolie recently splashed out on a lavish gift for her soon-to-be husband, spending nearly $1 million on a helicopter for their luxury French home. They have already had a helipad installed, and let’s face it a helipad is no use without a helicopter, so why not?! When you have $1 million sitting in the bank I guess it’s a no-brainer. Angelina has also been known to take to the skies so no doubt we will see these two flying around their French abode in no time.
ONE TO WATCH!
Each month SOCIETY MARBELLA shares a secret with you. It may be the freshest music artist, an exciting new designer or the next A list actress, but whoever it is, you know they are one to watch. This month, SOCIETY MARBELLA has its eyes on actress, MACKENZIE FOY.
Young actress Mackenzie Foy started out her career aged four as a print ads model working for Guess, Polo Ralph Lauren and Garnet Hill. She continued to excel in the world of modelling throughout her early childhood starring in commercials for Burger King, Blackberry and Pantene as well as modelling in campaigns for The Walt Disney Company, Mattel, Talbots and Gap before moving into television acting with parts in Hawaii Five-0, FlashForward and ´Til Death. However it was her casting in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 as the daughter of Edward Cullen and Bella Swan that catapulted her into the Hollywood elite. Although Miss Foy only appeared briefly in the first instalment of the mega series finale, she will take on a main role in Part 2 released later in 2012 and is already reaping the benefits. Since securing the role of Renesmee, Foy landed parts in Indie flick, Plastic Jesus, also featuring Hilarie Burton of One Tree Hill fame, and a role as one of the Perron sisters in The Warren Files alongside Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga. Although she is only 11, with those cherubic good looks and R.Patz on speed dial we are sure this little starlet will be the shining star of Hollywood in no time.
They’ve kept us guessing but Glee sweethearts Lea Michelle and Cory Monteith are officially a couple and are taking the next big step… moving in together. Cory is currently living with three other guys so didn’t object when Lea asked him to move into her new $1.4 million home. Who would!?
YOUNG LOVE
While One Direction’s Zayn Malik and Little Mix’s Perrie Edwards have remained tight-lipped about their romance, it appears they have been spending more and more time together and may even have enjoyed a sleepover last month. The duo were spotted leaving Perrie’s London home in the early hours of the morning fueling rumours these two cuties are a little more than good friends.

DAY
LOOMS
The major part of Marbella Makeover will be the surgeries carried out at Ocean Clinic. These will have the most drastic and noticeable effect on Helen’s appearance and well-being. This is the section of the process she is most excited about, as she feels it will completely change her outlook on life. “I must
say I’m most excited, and nervous, about the surgery part of Marbella Makeover as it is going to drastically change my appearance. The face surgery will be the most exciting aspect for me, especially the reshaping of my nose, as I’ve always had a complex about my profile and the bump at the top of my nose.”
F
ollowing an in-depth discussion with Helen and the Ocean Clinic team, Dr. Kai Kaye has scheduled to approach the body surgeries first, and after a period of recovery, they will start on the face, after all of the work from Mark Dental Clinic has finished. This is due to the fact that the altering of ones teeth can change the face structure slightly, so once Helen’s mouth has been fitted with the new crowns and veneers, Kai will be able to determine the final shape of the mouth, and therefore will know exactly what needs altering around the lip area. So, down to the actual surgeries. Kai is going to change two major areas of Helen’s body; her breasts and the general outline of her form. He is going to replace the volume of her breasts with implants, and attempt to recreate the juvenile, ‘perky’ bust she once had through breast augmenta-
tion. Helen is currently a small C cup, but after the operation, she will become either a big C cup or a small D. The reason why Kai is unsure of exactly what size Helen will go to is because he will need to wait until the actual surgery day to see which size fits her body the best. This part of the surgery will take around one and a half hours. Secondly, Kai is going to carry out a process called body sculpturing. Much like liposuction, but less invasive, this removes the excess fat from Helen’s tummy, back, hips and legs, alter the contours of her body and will give her a more streamlined shape that we all strive for. Then Kai will perform a mini tummy tuck to tighten the skin around her waist achieving that washboard stomach look. This section will take around two and a half hours. It is important to note here that this isn’t a quick fix, Helen will have to maintain her new shape through healthy
27
eating and a loving relationship with our best friend; the gym. Asked if it was normal carrying out all the body surgeries at once, Kai calmly explained that for a woman of Helen’s age and health, it’s perfectly safe to complete many surgeries at once. Six hours under anesthesia is safe, and as the amount of time to carry out all the body surgeries will total no more than four, it’s easier to do them all at once and more beneficial to Helen. This way, she will only have to be put under anesthetic once for her body surgeries, rather than on two separate occasions. Even though Helen is having fairly major surgery, she will only have to spend one
night at Ocean Clinic, and will be able to go home the next day. She will be given a prescription of antibiotics to be taken for a week, and after two days at home resting, Helen is required to visit Kai for him to check everything is on track and healing well, and to remove the bandages and paper dressing wrapped around Helen’s bust. After ten days, all of the stitches that aren’t self-absorbable can be taken out, and Kai will carry out a series of courses of lymphatic drainage to reduce the swelling around the body. Ocean Clinic also offer more post-op care in the form of physiotherapy, to eliminate the build up of liquids and any internal scar tissue. After all that fairly invasive surgery, one would expect for the recovery time to exceed a few months. However Kai assured Helen she would be up and about after four weeks! Astounding isn’t it! At Helen’s pre-op appointment, Kai took a selection of images of her body and performed an ECG (electrocardiogram), which measures and records the electrical activity of the heart. From this, the anesthesiologist is able to tailor the course of anesthesia Helen is put on for her surgeries. Also, a routine blood test was required. How-
ever, on the first attempt, a vein was no-where to be found. Helen assured us that she has been in this situation before, but that it just takes a while for her veins to come to the surface. After around half an hour of attempting to coax her vein, it was evident that it was going to be unsuccessful in this instance, and Helen was asked to return after a course of tablets and seeing a specialist. However, there was only a short space of time before Kai would be performing the surgeries, and knowing how busy he is, would he be able to reschedule?

THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL A
s you know from the last issue of SOCIETY MARBELLA, we uncovered an unsuspecting wide-open cavity in Helen’s mouth, exposing the nerve. Even though it was causing her no pain or discomfort, Sam Mark from the Mark Dental Clinic, sought to fix it before her major surgeries with Ocean Clinic and to prevent any further infection. In the situation where a tooth is considered so threatened because of decay or cracking, and future infection is considered likely or inevitable, a pulpectomy, removal of the pulp tissue, is advisable to prevent such infection. Firstly, Sam rubbed some numbing gel onto Helen’s gum to prepare her for the injection; you know the one we all remember from childhood. After a few moments, Helen’s mouth was ready for Sam to initiate her root canal treatment, professionally known as endodontic therapy. The first port of call was to clean the tooth of all decay and to find the root. Then, Sam removed the infected pulp and drilled the nerve and cleaned the root canals.
28
After this is done, the root canals were filled with a special medicine and sealed with a temporary filling. After a week and a half, and with a prescription of antibiotics should there be any swelling involved as a post-reaction, Helen was scheduled to return to Sam to check the state of the tooth and if no pain was evident, he would finish the root treatment and seal the tooth with a permanent filling. However, after the first stage, Helen did in fact end up with swelling and pain as a post-reaction. Therefore, on her return, although the tooth itself was now pain free and there were no signs of further swelling, Sam decided to change the medicine inside the tooth and wait to finish the root canal treatment, just to ensure that the tooth would be symptom free when finished. Sam has also changed her silver fillings, so Helen’s mouth is now amalgam and mercury free. markdentalclinic.com

The company suggests dabbing a bit on AFTER tinted moisturizer and BEFORE powders. A bit pricier than other bronzers on the market, but well worth it. The bronzer provides a ‘just tanned’ look with a touch of rose, which warms the skin and adds a spark of shimmer.

Guerlain’s Terracotta Jambes de Gazelle In 1984, Guerlain of Paris created the first bronzing powder they called “Terracotta.” In 2009, they inaugurated a new Terracotta adventure by combining two beauty steps that enchant the senses and enhance tanned skin. Their new tan accelerating, cooling, bronzing mist will intensify, embellish and prolong your tan all summer long.

Shortcuts With party season now upon us, and seemingly a new opening party every other day, the pressure is on to look spectacular from head-to-toe.
Follow international make-up artist Ruby Hammers top beauty tips for your special event.
* In the week running up to your big event steam your face with full fat milk. This is great for brightening dry skin and helping clear impurities from the pores. * For super smooth legs on the day use a rich moisturiser like Jergens Ultra Smoothing moisturiser to shave your legs. It’s a nice thick cream so will avoid irritation and doesn’t need to be rinsed off afterwards, it can just be worked in to moisturise. * On the morning of the event, to avoid any irritation at all to your skin use a moisturiser as a cleanser. A great option for this is Kiehls Ultra Facial Cream as it’s nice and light. * Prepare the skin on your body by exfoliating your skin. I love mixing olive oil and brown sugar as a economical, natural body scrub. The combination gets rid of dead, dull skin cells and moisturises at the same time. * Sooth spots by dabbing honey onto them. I find the natural antiseptic qualities helps heal my spots faster than many chemical based treatments and it’s something I always have in the kitchen cupboard. * Keep it simple, do not loose who you are under layers of makeup you would not usually wear. * Always use waterproof mascara, especially in the heat. * Use a pre-base under foundation (like Ruby & Millies Pre Base £9.00) to ensure coverage remains all night. * Make sure foundation always blends and matches with your neckline. * A flush of colour to the cheek always works to brighten the skin * Use eye lash curlers to open the eyes. * Always ensure that eyebrows are neat and to create a frame to the face. * Putting on your base in advance and having a relaxing bath with your base on. The steam from a bath makes the base settle in and look more natural. For more information go to: rubyandmillie.com

I
We have all gone Nuts Beauty Ed, Nicola McGeorge, discovers the benefits of coconut oil.
blame my latest obsession with Orlando Blooms’ wife, supermodel Miranda Kerr. In an interview at the beginning of the year, she attributed her blemish-free skin and glossy hair to coconut oil. Miss Kerr, 28, a model for Victoria’s Secret, said: ‘I will not go a day without coconut oil. I personally take four tablespoons per day, either on my salads, in my cooking or in my cups of green tea.’ Since this came from the mouth of one of the world’s most beautiful women, the product has been flying off the shelves. Health food chain Holland & Barrett, who boast 625 stores in the UK, reported sales had shot up by 50 per cent in the past year and that much of this demand was very recent. To see what the fuss was all about, I decided to delve a little deeper into the subject. I purchased the Coconut Oil Miracle by Bruce Fife, N.D and was astonished at what I read. He explained that coconut oil has been used throughout Asia and the Pacific for thousands of years as both a food and a medicine. Even today it holds a highly respected position in the Ayurvedic medicine of India. Only recently has modern medical research confirmed the many health benefits attributed to this remarkable oil. Once mistakenly thought to be bad for you because of its saturated fat content, coconut oil is now known to contain a unique form of saturated fat that actually helps prevent heart disease, stroke, and hardening of the arteries. The saturated fat in coconut oil is unlike the
fat found in meat or other vegetable fats. It is identical to a special group of fats found in human breast milk which have been shown to improve digestion, strengthen the immune system, and protect against bacterial, viral, and fungal infections. These fats, derived from coconut oil, are now routinely used in hospital IV formulations and commercial baby formulas. They’re also used in sports drinks to boost energy and enhance athletic performance.
Some of the benefits of coconut oil:
• Reduces risk of atherosclerosis and related illnesses • Reduces risk of cancer and other degenerative conditions • Helps prevent bacterial, viral, and fungal (including yeast) infections • Supports immune system function • Helps prevent osteoporosis • Helps control diabetes • Promotes weight loss • Supports healthy metabolic function • Provides an immediate source of energy • Supplies fewer calories than other fats • Supplies important nutrients necessary for good health • Improves digestion and nutrient absorption • Is highly resistant to spoilage (long shelf life) • Is heat resistant (the healthiest oil for cooking) • Helps keep skin soft and smooth • Helps prevent premature aging and wrinkling of the skin • Helps protect against skin cancer and other blemishes
It has been about six months since I started my daily dose of this miracle oil. Have I noticed anything different? Well let’s just say my hairdresser whoops with delight every time I see him, as my once pathetic mane keeps getting longer and thicker. My skin is clearer and brighter, while my nails, which used to snap if I so much as typed on my computer key board, can now actually be manicured without the therapist looking at me with despair. I opted for Viridian 1OO% organic raw coconut oil, from my favourite health food shop, La Casa de la Salud in Nueva Andalucia. Owner, Alicia, is a big fan of coconut oil and takes about six tablespoons a day, which is a bit much even for me. She is an encyclopaedia of health knowledge and also introduced me to the delicious Vita Coco 1OO % pure coconut water, which tastes just like you have a put a straw in a coconut. I think the oil itself tastes pretty nasty on its own, so I have come up with a variety of ways to incorporate it into my diet. A tablespoon mixed in with my porridge in the morning, alongside oat milk, honey and bananas goes down a treat. I add it to my smoothie, which is a great way to hide anything which tastes awful. My partner, the master chef, has even managed to come up with his own, out of this world chicken curry, using this amazing ingredient. Unfortunately I can not share his secrets with you as he seems reluctant to divulge! This oil can also be beneficial to animals. After reading the positive results for dogs I decided to use our puppy Kobi as the guinea pig. I started by giving him a teaspoon a day in his food and within a few weeks friends started to comment on how shiny his coat was, plus he had lost that horrible typical doggy smell. If his nose or skin starts to form dry patches, I just rub a little oil on it, not that he is very appreciative but miraculously the dry section vanishes by the following day. My verdict? This is one seriously tropical way to get some more healthy fat into your diet.

Charlie Caradas talks to Society Marbella about her latest venture into the world of cosmetic surgery:
my first breast augmentation when “ II had lived in England. After a few years, I
began to feel that my breasts were just too big for my body and made me appear much curvier than I actually was, so two years ago I got to the point where I really wanted the size reduced. I subsequently started to shop around for a cosmetic surgeon on the Coast. After visiting numerous clinics, and asking friends for personal recommendations of surgeons they thought were reputable, I finally met with Dr Marco Vricella from Aria Medical Group and was immediately impressed. Aria’s flagship private clinic in Marbella, HC International Hospital, feels more like a five star resort than an independent, international hospital. Not only does it feature the very latest in medical care and equipment but it also provides an elegant, peaceful and very discreet environment. I found Dr Vricella exceedingly professional, yet also caring. What made me finally decide that he was the right surgeon for me was the fact he actually said no to some of my requests! I was telling him I wanted this done and that done, and he turned to me and said that I didn’t need the other treatments we were discussing. He said that if he felt that something was wrong for a client, he would always suggest not to go ahead with it. I was taken aback as I was used to surgeons saying they would do anything I asked for. This made me trust him implicitly.
ested T d d an Trie

Dr Vricella recommended that due to the reduction of my breast size and the amount of excess skin that would be left over, I would need an uplift as well. I was very happy with his suggestion, so much so that I booked in straight away for both the breast surgery and, after another long chat with Dr Vricella, who explained all the pros and cons of each procedure, a rhinoplasty at the same time. I had disliked my nose for my whole life, yet was just too scared to do anything about it previously, but I felt so comfortable with Dr Vricella that I decided now was the time to go ahead. After the surgery, everyone commented on how fabulous I looked! In fact I ended up sending eleven patients to Aria, including both my sisters. Each one equally ecstatic with their own procedures. Okay, so back to me. Although my breasts looked amazing, and very natural, I have to admit I have always loved the really artificial look, similar to Victoria Beckham’s. Therefore, in April of this year, I booked in for another consultation with Dr Vricella. I explained the effect that I was after and he talked me through the different options. As always, he was very truthful with me, and explained that in order for him to achieve my desired result he would need to use a larger, round, high profile implant. He thought that Silimed implants, which are FDA approved, would be the best option for me. Unlike many surgeons, Dr Vricella always orders on average 3 different sizes of implants
per patient, which allows him to add a little more or a little less if he is not completely happy with the result. He would rather throw an implant away than not achieve the perfect look that he is after. This is another thing I love about him; his attention to detail. The operation lasted just over an hour and throughout my stay at HC International there was always a doctor on hand 24 hours a day. The aftercare with Aria is always incredible too. Many companies will offer a one week check up with a nurse at their clinic, followed by a six week appointment with the surgeon and that’s it! With Aria, follow up appointments are at 1 and 2 weeks, 1, 3, 6 and 12 months as a minimum and you can see Dr Vricella at any point after your surgery if you wish – even 10 years later. In addition, Damien Moore, Aria’s Specialist Nurse, and Louise Truelove, Senior Patient Co-Ordinator, are both on call 24 hours a day and it’s also comforting to know that if you need to go back to Theatre within the first year, this is paid for 100%. This in itself shows the type of service and patient care that Aria provides. It’s now been two months since the operation and I am delighted with the results - they are beautiful; just what I have always wanted! I would like to say a special thank you to Dr Marco Vricella and his team for the amazing job they have done. ariamedicalgroup.com

The natural face lift technique treatment is for … everyone; young and
old, male or female. It can also be used preventatively, as removing tensions from the facial tissue and muscles will postpone wrinkles due to improvement in circulation. Even people thinking of having cosmetic surgery would benefit, as the natural face lift technique will ensure the face is relaxed and balanced before the surgeon starts removing the surplus skin.

It takes six treatments to cover the whole area, yet I have seen big changes after just one treatment. It is much more than… a facial. This treatment is very relaxing as it not only works on releasing tensions in the tissue and muscles, but also the nervous system. Some people describe it as almost being in a trance. I have been amazed by… my clients results. One lady with adult acne had been taking antibiotics for a long time. After two months combining the non surgical natural face lift treatments with the skin care products and an antioxidant, the acne has almost gone, while another client’s dark
My top five tips for great skin are…
* Drink plenty of water * Make sure you are regular (your skin is the
largest detox organ) * Eat a rainbow a day (vegetables and fruits in different colours) so you get antioxidants to protect against premature ageing * Get a daily dose of vitamine D (20-30 minutes of morning or evening sun without sun protection) * Clean your skin morning and night and do a light peeling once or twice a week. +34 663 048 477 enncare.com
THE MEDICINAL MASSAGE Nicola McGeorge reviews the ancient practice of Tui Na Chinese massage
of massage. The treatment started out as quite a vigorous massage and I could not see how I was going to relax at all. However after about 15 minutes, my body was no longer responding to what my brain was telling it, I was flopping all over the place and have not felt that relaxed in such a long time.
A
fter yet another double deadline my shoulders had become so rounded that I was giving the hunchback of Notre Dame a run for his money, and the pain in my back was becoming unbearable. So when acupuncturist Dr Zhang told me about the latest treatment being offered at her clinic I didn’t need much convincing to book in for a session. Tui Na is a Chinese massage therapy which has been around for thousands of years and is probably the oldest system of bodywork still practiced. Based on the theory of traditional Chinese medicine, Tui Na massage uses manipulation techniques through the point of meridians, increasing the flow of Qi and blood circulation. This benefits bones, tendons and joints, while also regulating the Yin and Yang and increasing immunity.

circles almost disappeared in three weeks after she starting using my eye serum. My products are… natural, chemical free, organic, effective and reasonably priced. Every day I see how the skin care products improve my client’s skin, the structural lipid care in particular reduces wrinkles around the mouth and the décolleté. I also offer… power food supplements! All natural and organic ingredients with a combination of nutrients which work synergistically for the most comprehensive support for various body functions. I love the anti-oxidant, it helps protect against free radical damage which causes premature ageing. I am inspired by... making a difference and working with open minded and optimistic people.
The treatment at Dr Zhang’s clinic is performed by Dr WeiGuang Zhou, who graduated from the Beijing University Health Science Centre specialising in Traumatologia Orthopedist and Tui Na Chinese Massage. With over 37 years experience, he treats a multitude of conditions and clients from golfers with tendonitis to elderly patients with mobility issues. I have experienced many different types of massage before, yet being treated by a doctor was definitely a first. In China, only qualified doctors can offer this type

That night I slept like a baby, better than I have in years, and over the following week I had more energy and felt stress free, which is definitely a first for me. +34 952 900 626 / + 34 609 431 799 acupuncture-marbella.com

CHIC HAPPENS
Jewellery can be the focal point of any outfit, and when it comes to a Sparkles design, nothing rings more true. Laura-Jane Bruce caught up with Constanza Seijo, the creative brains behind the brand, to find out more behind each sparkling piece. What exactly is Sparkles? Sparkles is a concept of one-off creations, the home of exquisite, handmade contemporary amulets, brooches and pendants and exclusive ranges of clothing in natural fabrics. All items use vivacious colours and materials. We’ve been trading here on the coast for two years now, and it’s growing in popularity day by day. I love the light of Andalucia and the variety of people who live here, so it seemed like the perfect fit to open the shop here. Why did you choose the name Sparkles? Really for what the name suggests; I think it’s important that we express more of our inner sparkle. The brooches and pendants are made of painted miniatures, painted glass, glass stones (mostly Swarovski), mirrors and glitter, so they really ‘sparkle’. We’re living in a very grey time at the moment; everybody is worried and depressed with the economy, so I feel that the Sparkles brand is a bit of a counter movement towards optimism, light and humanity. Describe a typical client. We have a special type of client here at Sparkles. The majority are women who are quite sure of themselves, who dare to wear something different and who are enthusiastic about life, but we are open to all types of people who are prepared to leave the black-grey-brown colour scheme and wear something bright and radiant. The Sparkles brooches and pendants have wonderful colours and a lot of light and you can feel their joyous energy. You REALLY want to wear them.
58
When did your interest in jewellery begin? I must admit, it’s not something I’ve always wanted to do. I have seen a lot of jewellery through my jeweler husband Antonio Seijo, but I am an artist by nature. Some time ago in India I took part in a wonderful course with Andrew Logan,
an amazing English artist and jewellery designer. After his introduction to the technique of working with glass and precious stones, it seemed I had found what I had always been looking for. Of course, I’m still learning every day, the skill is never perfected, but the deeper I get into it the more meaning and excitement I find in this work. You feature gods and goddesses in your jewellery designs, where did that interest stem from? I studied literature in the past and in that you are constantly confronted with the gods. The whole western literature is permeated with Greek mythology. I came across the Indian gods through my travels, and I have always contemplated the meaning of them in our lives. We are normally locked into a program that takes place in our minds, that our parents, society and culture have handed down to us. This, together with our genes, creates what we call our personality. As the personality is rather fixed in many subjects, we need something that is beyond our habitual program induced by thinking and acting. We need to open to new possibilities and this is where we can appeal to the divine, which seems like magic, but actually is something bigger than our limited identity. Let’s say we are confused and don’t manage to organize ourselves. We can connect to the principle of order, clarity, discipline and wisdom, for which the goddess Pallas Anthena stands. Invisibly a new energy will reach our scope of action and we will suddenly feel capable of doing all we need to do. The same with love; there are some of us who have bad luck with partners because some invisible habit of action seems to block the flow. If we want to
CHIC HAPPENS
break the cycle, we can reach out to Aphrodite, who is the goddess of love, and through her female, intelligent and seductive energy she can teach our subconscious to change a few things and to open to new ways in love. That is, on the whole, how I would explain what it means to connect to the divine quality. Apparently some kind of magic happens, but actually it is about allowing a force bigger than our accustomed concepts to interact in our life. The effect is instant and we do not need to think about it or work on it. Connect-
ing to a divine principle means inviting new ways into our subconscious and this produces a change in our capacities. Why did you decide to fuse jewellery with mythical beings? I didn’t actually decide it, it was just one of those things that simply happened. A natural progression if you will. When you do things, you draw upon everything that you are, and coming from a background of literature, mythology and painting, it seemed natural to fuse them all together to create lovely pieces that
59
CHIC HAPPENS
can be enjoyed and that can have an effect on people. We also have Sparkles that are pure in colour and celebrate the joy of living, which also has an effect on you and how you show yourself to the world. You just have to let a Sparkle take over and transfer its energy to you. What has the response been like since you founded Sparkles? It’s quite interesting because the response has been fairly diverse. Some people don’t need any explanation into the pieces; they are attracted intuitively to the designs and materials and will take enjoyment in wearing them. Others are curious about the gods and goddesses present in some of the pieces and want to know what they represent. Once I tell them, they like to draw on what they want from that. Many of us don’t know the stories of the gods anymore but it’s easy to explain because it is just an essence. I don’t have to tell clients all the sources or quote from ancient texts; they get the feeling and know exactly how to interpret it for themselves and for the necessity of the moment. There is total freedom to interpret it in any way you want and how it connects to your own life and personal situation. The colours used are very vibrant and thought provoking, what do they mean? Vibrant is a good word to use because vibrations are what our life is about, it’s is important to feel them. You can hear vibrations in the voice or attitude of a person; when we are tired or depressed, our voices and vibrations become much lower, but when we are well and in a happy mood, we move, talk and laugh on a high vibration. I wouldn’t exaggerate, for example, that the colour yellow represents a particular feeling, but it does have an association with the sun and light. Each goddess somehow has a kind of light. Aphrodite, the goddess of love uses soft pinks and turquoise, the
60
blues represent the sea from which she was born and the pink hues are for the softness and tenderness of love. Ganesha, the Indian child god, and remover of obstacles uses animated and energetic colours representing his sense of fun and playfulness, whereas Iris’s pure, soft, ethereal, transparent glow, symbolize her healing qualities. What would you say is the most popular piece of jewellery from your collection? I would have to say probably Aphrodite is the most popular, because she symbolizes success in your love life, which is something everyone yearns for. However, the splendid, bright Apollo is also quite popular with the girls. Another is Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth, abundance and the preserver of family, life and beauty, represented by the Lotus flower on which she sits. She is one of my favourites and she creates new opportunities; whenever I wear her in India, people in the street literally bow to her image on my shirt! What materials do you use for your creations? I look for materials everywhere, from my travels to India to the Internet! The materials are often difficult to source because you need to know where to find them, so luckily throughout my travels over the past decade I have a number of hidden gems that I return to again and again. The materials I use are quite diverse; from bohemian glass sheets and mirrors, to pieces of ceramic and stones from the beach, even precious Swarovski and Indian stones; whatever suits the design of the piece really.
Your husband is an established jewellery designer also, how do your designs differ? He was the jeweller first, but he works with very different materials, extremely expensive, valuable, exquisite items. I have the luxury that I can play around much more with designs. We do have one thing in common though; we like to experiment with surprising combinations and breake the old patterns of classic jewellery. We constantly inspire each other. Antonio’s latest work has a lot to do with colours; we like to feed ideas off each other. What’s next for Sparkles? I am currently working on a selection of glass paintings, about 1x1m in size. These pictures utilise a different technique to the smaller jewellery pieces, but the feeling they produce is similar, their vibrant colours are a huge influence on the psyche. It was a natural progression, they are created using similar materials, but on a bigger scale. Each piece takes around four intense weeks to complete, so it’s definitely more challenging. I am working towards an exhibition in the next year or so… watch this space! With an Aphrodite necklace firmly in my grasp, I finished the interview truly on a high. If the Sparkle’s store is anything to go by, they’ll be sprinkling colour all over Marbella for years to come. Sparkles Avd Ramón y Cajal 7, Marbella Tel. 952 775 815 worldofsparkles.com

Who needs to submit a tax return? What’s new this year?
Taxpayers may apply for a copy of their tax return/fiscal data for individual Income Tax for the year 2011, from April 10th until July 2nd 2012, according to the Order of the Ministry of Economy and Finance. In addition to this, they may confirm the draft, whatever the result, from that date until July 2nd of the same year. The draft copy can be obtained and confirmed online via the Tax Agency’s website (www.agenciatributaria.gob.es), although the Tax Office will post the draft to taxpayers whom have not applied for it online as of May 3rd, which is the official date of the Income Tax Campaign in 2011. Once the draft is received you must review it and make any necessary amendments prior to giving your confirmation of the same. The deadline for online confirmation is from April 10th to July 2nd. If confirmation is done via other methods you may do so as of May 3rd. If the results of your tax return infer an amount will be repaid to yourself and you want this to go to your account, you must confirm the details no later than June 27th, unless you only set up direct payment to your bank for the second payment. Like every year, only taxpayers who have earned income from work, investment income with retention or deposit, treasury bills, real estate rents imputed maximum of two properties, capital gains or income subject to withholding on account and grants for the acquisition of residence,
may apply for the draft. Those who have a business or perceive yields than those mentioned above, may not ask for the draft.cannot ask that the draft include any information relating to other economical activities or perceived income aside from those mentioned above.
Novelties of the campaign
As per usual, every year the application of the drafts commences with the Income Tax Campaign for 2011, which runs from May 3rd to July 2nd. One novelty is that the maximum base for the deduction of investment in a primary residence in the cases of the purchase or rehabilitation of a primary residence has increased to €9.040,00 and for the amounts deposited in a home savings account. The base for installations and adequacy of a main residence on the grounds of disability has also increased to €12.080,00. In addition, there is a series of changes in the deductions for main residence improvements, as it will no longer be limited to the taxpayers primary residence and it will have a larger group of potential beneficiaries after increasing the annual limit of the base from €53.007,20 to €71.007,20. In addition to this there is an improvement on the amount deductible having been increased from 10% to 20% and increasing from €4.000,00 to €6.750,00 the maximum annual deduction base. Deductions for double taxation have been abolished on dividends pending application, as over 4 years has passed since the imposed limit in 2006. Alongside
this, the deduction for the birth of a child or an adoption has been repealed as of January 1st 2011, amongst other things.
Who has to file a tax return?
In any case, a taxpayer who only earns up to €22.000,00 per year from the same source is not obliged to file income tax. If the income is from more than one source then the amount received from the second (and so on) must not be more than €1.500,00. Taxpayers who earn €11.200,00 as a maximum annual income are exempt from the obligation applied to multiple income sources, provided that the sum of the second or other incomes is greater than €1.500,00. Taxpayers whom are obliged to file a tax return are those which have applied for deductions for property investments, company savings accounts, double taxation, social security mutual benefits, as well as reductions to the contribution base of pension plans or protected assets of disabled persons. These rules still apply to those who have earned less than €22.000,00 as a yearly income. Lexland Abogados recommends that you always have your draft tax return reviewed by a professional, as from our experience we can guarantee you that many of them are filed incorrectly and as such do not represent the right deductions. We’d like to remind you that our team of specialized members remain at your disposal for any queries or representation in this matter.
Francisco Rodriguez joined the team at Lexland Abogados in 2005 as Head the Tax and Accounting department. He graduated from Málaga University in 1997 with a Degree in Business and Economic Studies, and since then, went on to achieve a Masters Degree in Accountancy in 2007. He has over a decade’s experience working as a Tax Consultant for a number of international law firms, and is considered a specialist for all tax and accounting related matters by the “Registro de Asesores Fiscales del Consejo Superior de Colegios Oficiales de Titulados Mercantiles y Empresariales” in Spain, as well as being a member of the Spanish Tax Consultant Association (AEDAF).

Mystery Tour A day in the life of John May, Director, Quay Property Group
I
f you’ve ever wondered what it takes to succeed in the Marbella property industry, look no further than John May, Director of Quay Property Group. In just five years he has gone from ‘new kid on the block’ to one of Marbella’s most influential property developers. Although, if you met him he would modestly tell you, “I’m just a builder,” this self-made man would be thoroughly understating his achievements. ‘Just a builder’ would not currently be overseeing numerous building projects in prestigious locations such as El Madronal, La Zagaleta and front line Puerto Banus. Although John started his career as a bricklayer when he left school 25 years ago, his experience and expertise now make him one of the most sought after
68
property developers in Marbella. When he arrived here a short time ago, he had sold his business in the UK and come to relax, but some people just aren’t built to retire – and John is one of them. John spends the majority of his mornings in the office and the rest of the time driving around dropping in on his construction sites, so when he offered us the opportunity to come along for the ride and get a sneak preview of his work, we couldn’t wait to grab our hard hats, especially when he mentioned that one, almost completed, project will be totally decorated with Fendi!
The first stop is a villa just outside
Marbella that John has been called in
to transform with his magic touch. “The client who bought this house decided he wanted to make changes and contacted me to draw up the plans for a complete reform,” explains John as we walk through the gates of the eight-bedroom, nine-bathroom and five-floor house. It’s impressive, even in its current state as a construction site. John’s team has been working on it for six months and there is at least another year of work before it will be complete, but already you can see it taking shape. Set in the most central point of a valley looking down to the Mediterranean and North Africa, the views are amazing from almost wherever you stand in the shell of this enormous house, which was originally built in

a traditional Spanish style complete with terracotta tiles. The heart of the property may have been ripped out but it is easy to see how John’s influence is slowly transforming it into what he describes as a “safe modern” style. From the glass ceiling separating two floors of the office, to the lift shaft that connects the upstairs directly to the internal pool area, every detail has a contemporary edge. Even the four-car garage will be finished with a water garden on top to make it pleasing to the eye for anyone looking down on it from one of the upper floors.
The final leg of our tour is the garden where the team has already dug out the space for a pool and put in the pilings for a thatched pagoda with kitchen, lounge and chill out area. Of course, being a Quay Property Group design, this won’t be just any pool; it will be a beach style pool that you can wade into from the shallow end, which slopes down to the deep end as if you are walking out into the ocean. It’s no wonder that the owner of the neighbouring house has watched this development and contacted John about possibly working on a future project.
“Everything is built on a grand scale,” says John as we walk through the giant master bedroom and into a bathroom with a shower area big enough for a horse. Through the window, he points out where he is planning to build a three-bedroom guest residence at the back of the house. But the most impressive areas of this site have to be the lower level and basement, which make you appreciate the sheer size of this project. There’s a cinema, pool room, two bars, a cardio and free weights area, space for spinning bikes overlooking the ocean, an indoor pool, hot and cold dip, sauna, hammam, changing rooms and an eight-person Jacuzzi. And the pièce de résistance is the sound proof box from Harrods, a space to relax and chill out before, after or even during your work out. This is, as John describes it, “serious” construction.
69
KEEP IT REAL
Our next port of call is La
Heredia, where Quay Property Group is working on a five-bedroom house. “Not all our jobs are ultra-high end,” explains John. “We also take on more modest projects such as this one, which required improvement of the bathrooms, the basement turned into a cinema room with two additional bedrooms and garden works.” No job is too large or too small for this thriving construction design and build company. It’s a hive of activity when we arrive; there are people up ladders painting
70
and fixing lights into the bathrooms. This project is closer to completion and although it’s on a smaller scale than the last job we visited, it is showing all the hallmarks of John’s signature, contemporary style. “There always has to be at least one cream and one brown wall in my interiors,” he jokes as he shows us into the garden area, which he has transformed from an overgrown jungle with a slimy, green pool to a slick, Asianesque, chill-out area complete with decking and LED lighting.
KEEP IT REAL
Back in the car we head down the Ronda road towards Puerto Banus. John’s
phone has hardly stopped ringing all day and on this short journey alone he takes four or five calls. “When I tell clients I am available to them 24 hours a day, I mean it,” says John picking up another call from one of his foremen back on the construction site we’d visited that morning. “This is a 24/7 job. I get calls at all times of day and I do my best to answer all of them even if it is the middle of the night.” The client who owns the apartment we are going to see in Puerto Banus hasn’t seen the site in over six weeks and has put all his faith in Quay Property Group to deliver it to the high specifications agreed. John has chosen an Italian bespoke kitchen which will complement the Fendi interior, and transform the beach front apartment from a dated, 80s throw back to a state-of-the-art, all-singing-all dancing ‘crib’. Situated front line beach in Puerto Banus, this pied-a-terre will be completed and ready to rock in four weeks’ time; and we can’t wait to come back and see the final product. With triple glazed windows, to keep out the noise from the neighbouring clubs, to the champagne fridge built into the walk-in wardrobe, every detail has been considered. Even the façade has had a makeover, which entailed lining up the exterior patio fence posts with the frame of the French doors so the view to the ocean isn’t obscured. The patio doors are obviously mirrored so that the general public can’t see in; an essential detail considering the upstairs bath looks down over the beach… It doesn’t take much imagination to envisage what a good time anyone would have in this luxury pad, and it is safe to say that any visitors he may bring back here would be suitably impressed, particularly when the front door has keyless entry and all internal domotics are controlled from an iPad anywhere in the world.

linea directa reports HOW TO COMPLETE AN ACCIDENT REPORT FORM This document is essential for determining who is responsible for a traffic accident, which has a direct effect on the price that customers pay when renewing their insurance. What is an accident report form? An accident report form is a document which outlines the circumstances which have occurred in a car accident. In addition to the personal details of the drivers and their vehicles, the document includes a jointly agreed description of the manoeuvres carried out by the drivers when the accident took place, which plays a key role in determining who is responsible for a traffic accident. How should it be completed? LĂnea Directa offers the following advice to complete the form:
1
Columns A and B (blue and yellow), are for the personal details of the drivers and their vehicles.
2
In section 12, (circumstances) the numbered column on the left describes the manoeuvres of car A and the one on the right those of car B. If you are unsure which box to mark, leave it blank. Make a drawing of the accident in section 13 indicating the manoeuvre of each car.
3
If anybody has been injured or if you think they might have been injured, complete section 24.
4
If there is more than one car involved in the accident, also complete section 23, on the reverse side of the form, and include it in the sketch.
5
Sign the form and keep a copy.

he EU continues to struggle in its attempts to resolve the eurozone sovereign debt crisis. The new fiscal compact, imposing disciplined budgetary management at a national level, was ratified (except by the UK and the Czech Republic) on March 2 and will come into force from the beginning of next year. This was followed by an agreed “haircut” for private investors in Greek debt and the introduction of measures to boost the financial arsenal available to fight future sovereign default threats via bailout funds. In the wake of these events, the markets decided to grant the eurozone a grace period. However, the honeymoon ended abruptly in early April, as it became clear that these developments were barely able to put the crisis on hold, let alone resolve it. The culprit of concern this time is Spain. At the end of March, the Spanish government introduced draconian austerity measures that sparked riots in the streets of the country’s major cities. For the markets, however, the issue is not civil unrest but credibility in Spain’s ability to make the latest round of massive spending cuts effective in restoring sustainable economic growth. Scepticism in this regard was reflected
74
in April’s slump in Spanish government bond prices, with ten-year yields temporarily rising above 6%, and S&P’s subsequent two-notch credit downgrade for Spanish debt to BBB+.
member states. This debtor-creditor interrelationship means that measures adopted to address domestic financial problems may have potentially damaging regional consequences.
LOSE-LOSE SITUATION
At its core, therefore, the eurozone debt problem is the collective result of discrete national economic problems. This is symptomatic of a monetary union not backed by fiscal or political union - ultimately, an untenable position. Until effective remedial measures are adopted at the regional level, the eurozone debt crisis will likely persist.
Countries such as Spain face an awful dilemma; cutting spending/ raising taxes means less disposable income for consumers to spend/repay personal debt, which translates into lower growth, which leads to higher unemployment (now at a record rate of 24.4% in Spain), which results in still lower consumption; not cutting spending/raising taxes risks financial collapse, requiring the assumption of further debt. Moreover, unpopular labour market reforms have had to be implemented to restore competitiveness in international markets for goods and services, but wage restraint will mean less disposable income etc, etc. Sadly, Spain is not an isolated case. And eurozone membership means that Spain’s predicament has a regional rather than just national significance; while each state has its own peculiar financial crisis, each crisis has a regional impact due to the exposure of individual member states to the debt of other

Motoring author, racing driver and photo-journalist Ian Kuah reports on the latest PORSCHE BOXSTER S
M
any of the cars on sale today rely on whimsical styling and fussy detailing for visual impact and product differentiation. But the fact is that pure forms with elegant detailing always withstand the test of time best and have a much greater chance of gaining classic status. Rising above this background of stylistic white noise, the third generation Porsche Boxster comes like a breath of fresh air. Its pure shape is classical mid-engined roadster, but also refreshing in the way that its detailing takes familiar elements bang into the 21st Century in a simple, elegant and meaningful way.
93
TORQUE TALK
The shape and detailing of the headlamp units, and indeed the front end in general, is far removed from the 991 Carrera while clearly retaining the current Porsche family design cues. Visually, the side intakes on the 986 and 987 Boxster models were always rather token. However, because the doors are no longer shared with the 911, the designers were able to use Carrera GT style sculpting on the area in front of the side air intakes. This gives a much more three-dimensional look to the cars flanks. Unlike before, these intakes are now both the same size left and right, but the 2.7 litre Boxster has one intake blanked off as its less powerful motor has more modest cooling requirements.
Benefiting both visually and dynamically from a 60mm longer wheelbase, and front and rear tracks widened by up to 40mm and 18mm respectively, the new Boxster’s proportions are also noticeably changed from before by its 32mm longer body, 27mm shorter front overhang, and a more steeply raked front windscreen that sits 100mm further forward. The cars overall height has also been reduced by 13mm and its centre of gravity brought down by 6mm.
underside of each end of the rear spoiler. Especially when the car is silver, you get the impression that the spoiler runs into each tail light assembly.
While it may seem obvious, there is no rule in the stylists book that says elements like the tail lights and rear spoiler have to stay mutually exclusive. Thus, Porsche’s designers have cleverly integrated the functional ends of the rear spoiler into the tail light mouldings, merging the two into a visual and functional entity.
However, the Boxster’s curves are not as pronounced as on these classics, resulting in a chunkier, more masculine demeanour. The drag coefficient is good too, showing 0.31 Cd on the Boxster S with its standard 8.0J and 9.5J x 19-inch alloys, shod with 235/40ZR19 and 265/40ZR19 rubber. The plain vanilla Boxster, running on 8.0J and 9.0J x18-inch wheels with 235/45ZR18 and 265/45ZR18 tyres, has an even better 0.3 Cd.
In fact, it is such a clever piece of design that you have to look closely to see that the clear reversing lights actually form the
94
With sensual curves defining its front and rear arches, the simple and elegant shape of the latest Boxster has strong echoes of the best mid-engined classic sports cars of the 1960s and ‘70s such as the Porsche 904 GTS and Ferrari Dino 246GT.
The four-cam, flat-six 3,436cc motor in the Boxster S has a very over-square 97.0 x 77.5mm bore x stroke. A naturally high-revver, its limiter kicks in at 7,800rpm, way past the 6,700rpm point where its peak power of 315hp (91.8hp/Litre) is produced. This is backed up by 360Nm of torque from 4,500 to 5,800rpm. In parenthesis, the entry-level Boxster uses a 2,706cc version of the same motor, with an 89.0 x 72.5mm bore x stroke. Output is 265hp (97.9hp/Litre) at 6,700rpm, with 280Nm of torque from 4,500 to 6,500rpm. Both versions feature variable valve lift, VarioCam Plus variable valve timing, and their 12.5:1 compression ratio requires 98 Octane fuel. In empirical terms, the new Boxster S performs well against the stopwatch. 0-100km/h takes 5.1 sec with the six-speed manual, and 5.0 sec with the seven-speed PDK. This drops to 4.8 sec with Sport Plus and Launch Control if you opt for the Sport Chrono Package with PDK. The numbers for the 0-200km/h sprint are 17.6 sec, 17.5 sec and 17.3 sec, with top speed being 279km/h for the manual, and 277km/h with PDK. The Boxster S PDK with Sport Chrono Package laps the Nurburgring in 7 min 58

manual Boxster S, and 180g/km and 192g/km for the Boxster.
Thanks to the new more efficient engines, brake recuperation and start-stop, fuel economy is 15 percent better than before despite the power and torque improvements. That means 8.8L/100km for the six-speed manual Boxster S, and 8.0L/100km for the sevenspeed PDK. The 2.7 litre consumes just 8.2L/100km as a manual and an impressive 7.7L/100km in PDK form.
Thanks to substantial revisions in its construction, including greater use of lightweight steels and aluminium, the new Boxster bodyshell has 40 greater static torsional stiffness, while the complete car is anything from 25 to 35kg lighter modelfor-model. The entry-level Boxster manual tips the scales at a relatively modest 1,310kg kerb weight, with the S weighing 10kg more. PDK adds a further 30kg to either. These numbers make the Boxster the lightest car in its class.
The latter gearbox also has a distinct advantage with emissions of 188g/km versus 206g/km for the
My anticipation runs high as I approach one of the most beautiful sports cars in current production. The svelte look of this latest Boxster is in stark contrast to the more traditional long nosed, short-tailed BMW Z4, and the contrived styling of the Mercedes SLK. Porsche is on a winning streak with its latest designs, which show a clear mastery of elegant simplicity in form and detail. The surprise and delight continues from behind the wheel, with an all-new interior notably improved in design and quality over its predecessor. The cabin is snug, yet spacious enough with a great driving

position that can accommodate most people thanks to its wide range of seat and steering wheel adjustability. While it shares some elements from the 991 Carrera like the centre console and door cards, the unique dashboard top roll, instrument pack and air vents give it sufficiently unique currency, while build quality is beyond reproach for this class of car. The stopwatch of the Sport Chrono Package is now recessed into the dashboard top rather than sitting proud on top, a design feature that further distances the Boxster from the Carrera. The new three-layer canvas roof powers up or down in just nine seconds, and can be done on the fly at up to 50km/h, and via the key when the car is stationary with the engine off. The fiddly manual top latch on the windscreen is gone, and the whole
96
operation is now handled by two electric motors for the roof and a third for the latch. Porsches are about driving pleasure and the million Dollar question is whether or not the new Boxster lives up to expectations. I’ll put you out of your misery now with an unqualified yes. As before, the motor fires up with a sharp flat-six bark from behind your head and settles into a perfectly smooth idle. Even the weather played ball as I set off from Zuffenhausen with the roof down under blue skies. With its PASM suspension set in normal mode, my PDK equipped Boxster S on optional 20-inch wheels rode the suburban roads around Stuttgart just a little more firmly than the 991 Carrera. These big wheels look terrific, but I can’t help but think that 19s are more appropriate for this class of car, and would give also it a
greater measure of comfort if you use your Boxster as a daily driver. Still, the spring and damper rates feel near perfect in Normal mode, and impressively, the ride quality does not suffer much when you hit the Sport button. Even so, my programing of choice is still Sport for the engine and gearbox and Normal for the PASM. Sport Plus is definitely best left for the race track as it is far too edgy on the road, triggering downshifts at the slightest hint of pressure on the throttle. Some who have driven the 991 Carrera and Boxster have pronounced the electric power steering system lacking in feedback compared to the previous models. I take issue with that comment for two reasons. I test cars on a subtractive basis, noting anything that stands out as unbalanced or wrong. Then I home in on a potential issue and try to work out what I think is wrong or missing.
TORQUE TALK
For me, the steering of the 991 Carrera and the new Boxster do not stand out from the dynamic mix particularly, feeling right in relation to the chassis behaviour of these cars under all driving conditions. The fact is that the new Carrera and Boxster have long wheelbases and wider tracks than their predecessors. They ride and handle better, and there is no doubt that in doing so they have overcome any last trace of edginess, especially on undulating roads. If you superimposed the feel and feedback of an older style 911 steering system onto such a chassis, it would definitely feel out of place. As it is, the electric power steering edits out most of the kickback from road bumps to a level that is correct in relation to the more stable chassis and absorbent suspension. Case closed in my books. The longer wheelbase and wider tracks enhance the Boxster’s ac-
tual and perceived dynamic abilities. The extra few millimetres make the car feel no less chuckable on a twisty road. If anything the extra stability helps the car feel more settled over bumps taken at speed, especially when combined with some steering angle in a turn. This extra poise gives the driver more confidence on unfamiliar roads. Part of the reason for this increased stability is the dynamic transmission mounts that are part of the Sport Chrono Package. Apart from improving the cars handling by resisting movement of the gearbox/motor package under hard acceleration and cornering, these mounts also make for a smoother drive with less spurious vibration from the drivetrain reaching the cabin. The engine and exhaust note as the motor spins up is pure Porsche flat six. Rather than a growl that turns into a shriek like in the original 986 Boxster, the latest Boxster’s soundtrack is more Carrera-like in
its constant tone, with a volume that increases with revs. It is thus a more mature and less manic driving partner whose sonic signature is only altered by the exhaust valve button that comes as part of the Sport Chrono Package. This is a welcome thing when you are out on the open road, but the pops and bangs it encourages on the over-run can be a bit too fruity for the urban environment, unless you actually want to draw attention to yourself. In fact, I found the standard exhaust note was just fine, especially when passing walls or driving through tunnels, which act as natural sound amplifiers. As always, the PDK is blindingly fast and smooth in up and downshifts, blipping the throttle aggressively on downshifts in Sport mode. It makes life so much easier in traffic and is definitely the fastest way by far to shift cogs on road and track. On the unrestricted autobahns around Stuttgart, I managed to
97
TORQUE TALK
extend the Boxster S right to its top speed. And there, I ran into the only criticism I have of the car. I had been having so much fun on the sweeping country roads that I wrongly expected the mere 315hp Boxster S to also go gangbusters in a straight line on the autobahn. Its acceleration is always linear and smooth, but it does not begin to approach the kick in the small of the back variety you get from the 3.8 litre Carrera S motor.
98
Ultimately, despite its healthy endowment of horses, the 3.4 litre motor simply lacks the sheer torque to match its peerless chassis. It lacks the punch to continue piling on speed with real gusto past 200km/h, and the last 30km/h in particular are relatively hard won. A 3.6 litre Boxster would be no bad thing! Everything is relative though, and Porsche knows its market well. The Boxster has been price and image positioned perfectly, and if you
want more performance, you buy a Carrera Cabriolet. Simple. Taken on its own merits, the new Boxster is as perfect a car as you are going to get in this class. It has looks to die for and dynamics that will satisfy hard-core drivers. In a nutshell, the new Boxster is a gem of a roadster, and the worst possible thing that could happen to the opposition.

E
urope will go football crazy this summer as Euro 2012 takes place. The competition gets underway on June 8, when co-hosts Poland take on Greece in the opening match, though judging on Greece’s recent behaviour when it comes to anything to do with Europe, some may question the wisdom of allowing them in the tournament. If you are not a football fan, you are in for a torrid time. The Euros are often described as the World Cup without Argentina and Brazil, and with Spain currently the reigning European and World Champions, you can be sure of 24/7 coverage. One of the joys of living in a place like Marbella is the fact that it boasts such a cosmopolitan mixture of nationalities from all over Europe and beyond.
102
€URO
YOU WHAT???
During Euro 2012, this may prove to be something of a mixed blessing of course. Italy, France, Sweden, Holland, Denmark and Russia, plus England and the Spanish, are all involved and all have sizable expat populations on the coast, so you stand a fair chance of getting dragged out to watch one of their games as well. Then we have the Irish; The Republic have qualified for their first major football tournament in years and are more determined than ever to enjoy themselves. If you think the Guinness fuelled shenanigians that accompany St. Patrick’s Day every year are bad, just wait untill The Republic play Spain on June 14. It’ll be mayhem in Marbella and most of the rehab centres in a 20 mile radius are already taking block bookings for the week after.
Another match I’m looking forward to is Holland v Denmark. At the last World Cup, I was adopted as a lucky mascot by my local Dutch bar, and being the size I am, was easily portable. Last time I was in Amsterdam, I suffered a neck injury because I had to strain my neck and look up to speak to everyone. I love the Danes too, (planning my first trip to Copenhagen later this year) so I’m divising the following drinking game; if Holland score, skull a Heneiken, if Denmark score, it’s Carlsberg time. Simple in its fiendishness! Of course the other great thing is that being Holland v Denmark, there will be lots of lovely liberated Dutch and Danish girls to hug no matter who wins…
Yes dear reader I am that shallow. I’m already planning a trip to the Copa America to support Colombia… Of course, there’s always a flip side and there are quite a few matches that I’ll pay good money to stay away from, mainly involving the old Soviet Block nations. Poland v Russia, Netherlands v Germany and Russia v Czech Republic could be the mother of all punch ups, and that’s just on the field. Meanwhile Spain v Italy could see more theatrics than Broadway and then there’s Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal, who will be great fun to watch if you love pantomime, although in a Group of Death with Holland, Germany and Denmark, he shouldn’t be strutting around the place for too long.
Taking about teams that won’t be in the tournament for too long, there’s England. Obviously Roy wisely decided that the scheduled training camp in Marbella was a barking mad idea (Marbella? Full of distractions for footballers? Who would have thunk it???) but with Rooney not available until match three, (assuming he doesn’t pole axe a Pole on the flight in) and matches against Ukraine, the Swedes (which has a no-score-draw written all over it) and our old foes the French in our opening match, I’m fully expecting to watch the England games in the same way that I used to watch Dr Who as a small boy; from behind the sofa with my hands over my eyes…

he Beach House has always been one of my favourite restaurants on the coast. From the extensively varied menu, to the selection of live music acts and entertainment, and of course the all-important location, The Beach House really seems to have it all. The combined facilities of a rustic chiringuito lounge, immaculate stretch of sand and beautiful waterfront restaurant give the overall feel of a chic beach club. The sophistication of the venue is what strikes you the most. The décor and ambience sets it apart and its established status ensure only the refined members of Marbella are in attendance. The smartness and professionalism of the waiting staff complete the dining experience. We were served an amuse-bouche in the form of a shot of pumpkin, carrot and chive soup. A resounding nod of appreciation exploded across the table, and all diners’ anticipation grew for the feast that lie in wait. ensures only the finest and freshest ingredients are used in each dish. From the specials menu, the tuna and avocado tartar arrived at our table. As this is one of my all time favourite dishes, I knew it was going to be tough to impress me, as I like to think of myself as somewhat of a tartar connoisseur. I am pleased to say that it exceeded all my expectations; the combination of the soft tuna and creamy avocado, along with the coriander, wasabi and basil made for a vibrant, tangy amalgamation of flavours. Another starter on offer was eggs benedict with succulent asparagus and smoked salmon on sundried tomato toast. The hollandaise sauce married wonderfully with the salmon strips and the perfectly runny yolk. King prawn tempura with a vermicelli noodle salad, crisp Asian vegetables and a spicy chilli sauce concluded the course of starters. For our main dishes, we were treated to more platters from the specials
menu. Firstly, braised and roasted belly of pork poised on a champ mash and runner bean bed. The vegetables gave this dish a much-needed crunch, with the sweet apple sauce blending with the chunky pork belly. Secondly, a delicate pan-fried fillet of turbot arrived at our table, resting on an impressive stack of purple potato mash and an assortment of baby vegetables, drizzled with a creamy chorizo sauce. This was an all round favourite, the inquisitiveness of the coloured mash only heightened the taste. Our final dish came in the form of free-range chicken breast, filled with a sausage and pistachio stuffing, encircling a crisp hash brown, sautéed spinach and a fennel and thyme sauce; the nuttiness of the pistachio and the rich spinach combined with the meaty bacon encompassing the poultry in a burst of flavour that was highly reminiscent of a childhood roast. To conclude, a banoffee cheesecake, the biscuit base and the creamy topping rounded off a perfectly wonderful meal.

Nikki Beach sushi has always been outstanding, but now the pertinently named Sushi 2.0 menu offers some of the most original and sensational sushi creations on the planet. We were served a plethora of platters from the aforementioned 2.0 menu, including the smooth salar salmon, rolled with flaked crabmeat and avocado, dressed in a lime and cilantro sauce, dusted with black sesame seeds. Consisting of tuna sashimi, crab and lobster meat, avocado, mango, cucumbers and green onions rolled in rice paper served with chive and Clementine sauce, sesame-chili oil,

rupo Magna World of the esteemed El Gran Gatsby and Magna Café recently opened their new Italian eatery in Aloha. Il Posto, Italian for ‘the place,’ is nestled in the busy strip adjacent to the luxury apartment complex Aloha Gardens, also home to busy bar, The Living Room and chic beauty salon, Boutte. Formerly Tres Palos, Il Posto boasts an intriguing menu rich in variety and a ‘to die for’ cocktail list. After taking a seat on the outside terrace near to the magnificent water feature the restaurant borders, we were welcome by a spirited waitress who encouraged us to try the vibrant cocktails available. Easily persuaded, we opted for four to share, unable to select individual choices! At only €5.95, the cocktails are excellently priced and as we found out, also delicious. Il Posto uses only the finest fruit purees resulting in an explosion of zest typically only found in exotic destinations. My colleagues laughed at my announcement that I felt like I was holidaying in the Bahamas with the sounds of the water fountain filling my ears and the fresh taste of melon, raspberry and pineapple hitting my tongue, but I really did! After a short wait, our four magnificent creations arrived. We opted for a Pina Colada, a Raspberrypolitan, (an invigorating take on the traditional Cosmopolitan), a Melon Blood and a Caipiroska with black vodka. The Raspberrypolitan was a quick favourite and we all agreed a

much-loved alternative. Our waitress kindly explained to us that in addition to the raspberry substitute, they could also offer a Passionpolitan with fresh passion fruit and of course the classic Cosmo. Whilst we were finishing off our cocktails, the first of our appetizers arrived; salmon tartar with guacamole and lime shavings. Refreshing and flavourful, the salmon tartar was delicate and perfectly accompanied by the generous portion of guacamole and lime flakes. Next was a russian salad, topped with prawns and a noodle nest, an excellent contrast to its predecessor, rich and creamy it melted in the mouth and was bursting with flavour. Until now our lunch had been relatively civilised as we discussed the week’s activities and our plans for the weekend until one of my lunch guests commented, “be careful, there are bones in this,” which sent the remainder of the table into a fit of giggles as we realised she was referring to the noodle nest rested on top of the succulent, obviously boneless, prawns! It’s going to take a while for her to live that one down! Usually the one known for making the blonde comments, I was quite relived the joke was on someone else for a change! On completion of our starters, a welcome glass of cool white wine was delivered to us along with our first entrée, tagliatelle pescatora; perfect ‘al dente’ pasta smothered with an abundance of mouth-watering seafood. we were dining at lunchtime, we were fortunate enough to sample the roast shoulder of lamb with courgette cous cous from the evening menu, emphasis on fortunate! The meat fell off the bone, oozing in flavour and perfectly complemented by the soft, spiced cous cous and vegetables. This was followed by an enormous beef burger with caramelised onions and bacon. The size of the burger itself overwhelmed me and for the first time during our feast I was glad we were sharing! It was as delicious as it was aesthetically pleasing, the caramelised onions adding just the right amount of sweetness. Il Posto offers a distinctive menu style with all starters, main courses and desserts priced equivalently, the latter starting at just €6. In addition, Il Posto also boasts a selection of authentic Italian pasta dishes including spezzatino and lasagnette as well as a collection of hearty sandwiches. Alternatively, if you don’t fancy a full meal, Il Posto is the perfect place to enjoy gourmet tapas in the afternoon sun accompanied by a chilled glass of wine or a cool beer.
our magnificent banquet and as we sat back and finished of the last of our wine in the afternoon’s sunshine, I began to drift away to my Bahamas trance once again, until my colleague reminded me we had to head back to work! I guess all dreams have to end sometime. Nevertheless, if you are looking for an afternoon of fantasy and relaxation combined with exquisite cuisine, head to Il Posto and spend an afternoon with your head in the clouds. Il Posto Urb. To conclude our gastronomic banquet, we sampled Il Posto’s famous ‘Fizz’. Served in a tall martini glass, and flavoured with vibrant gin and tonic, it fizzled on each bite, reminiscent of popping candy, the sweet treat we all adored as children. Invigorating and energizing, it was the perfect end to

THE GOLDEN TICKET TO
Food Heaven By Laura-Jane Bruce Photos by Ruth Jones
T
he Golden Mile is awash with fashionable restaurants of all cuisines; Italian, International, Chinese to name a few, but one has really stood out for me over the past few months. E&O Café, located opposite the Marbella Club Hotel, has challenged the typical Thai menu, fusing many tastes and genres of food. To commence our gourmet feast, a light salad of marinated salmon arrived at our table. Aesthetically
pleasing, the colours and presentation of the dish made it a shame to tuck in, but once the aroma of the mustard vinaigrette hit our noses; we didn’t hesitate. A mix of sweet and savoury with the crunchy cucumber and the moist melon made for a perfect balance of flavours. The most interesting aspect of the plate was the salmon caviar, something I have never encountered before, and the seasonal flowers scattered on and around the dish. Kim, the owner
of E&O, explained that the flowers served two purposes, not only did they add beauty, they also enhanced the overall zest. Among others, there were flavoured flowers of orange, garlic, even oyster! Who knew! Following this, our final starter, crispy langostinos, a modern take on the classic tempura, wrapped in sautéed spinach and accompanied with a portion of wasabi cream. Denser than the side traditionally served with sushi, this was mixed with mascarpone, and brought a sophistication to the dish as the smooth cream contrasted with the crisp shrimp coating. This was followed by the ever popular fresh tuna from Almadrabas, using the age-old Andalucían technique of catching the fish humanely, grilled but left rare in the centre (the only way to enjoy it), served with green asparagus and a tangy side salad of cubed peach and a balsamic reduction. The ultimate dish in our journey through Europe and the Orient was a mixed plate of sushi, again wonderfully presented, including spicy tuna rolls and kar rolls enclosed with succulent salmon. I have only met one non-sushi fan, so I’m definitely going to bring him here, and I’m sure E&O would be able to convert him to a sushi enthusi-

ast. Along with all the classic sushi and sashimi platters, the restaurant also offer more challenging variations, such as flying fish caviar sushi, and chukka salad (Japanese seaweed) sushi. Also, watch this space as they will soon be announcing their exclusive sushi making lessons every Sunday; we’ll be the first ones to bring you all the details you need. Having such hectic lifestyles, we unfortunately had to leave before we had the chance to sample one of their desserts, but we were assured they are to die for. You’ll have to let us know your verdict. Restaurants such as this are only normally open for dinner, but we enjoyed our platters on a sunny afternoon; the kitchen is open from 1pm until 4pm, and then for the dinner service from 7.30pm. I would definitely recommend choosing E&O as your dining destination one lunch, as the terrace is simply heavenly during the day, all the while with the exotic umbrellas keeping you cool. Every Saturday night, the restaurant is brought alive with live music from their resident singer Daniel Boland, definitely something to experience if you are looking for something different on the coast. If you’d like
to enjoy the wonder of their cuisine in your own home, they also offer a takeaway and delivery service. And I bet you’ve been wondering what E&O stands for... it’s as simple as ‘European and Oriental’, perfectly describing their cuisine style.

M
arbella’s newest eatery, Route 66, located in Plaza Antonio Bandaras, is more than just your traditional US diner. Although the décor and appearance is reminiscent of a classic all American restaurant, the concept and menu offers an entirely unique approach whilst still keeping alive the spirit of ‘The Mother Road’. Head Chef, Tomasz Matuszczak has been trained under the watchful eye of famed chef Richard Corrigan at the legendary Bentleys in Dublin, thus has utilised his remarkable eye for detail into the menu. While some may associate American cuisine with ‘fried everything’, Route 66 surpass all expectations by combining the traditions we all know and love with high quality ingredients, stunning presentation and a specialised cooking technique, producing an entirely unique gastronomic experience. Tomasz’s specialities include his homemade Downtown Chicken, the best Flame Grilled T-Bone on the coast and his secret Peppercorn Sauce that takes two whole days to produce. Perfection comes at a price but astonishingly not a monetary price as Route 66 not only offer exceptional quality, but also unbelievable value for money, a prerequisite owners Nigel Wilson and Patrick Deane aimed to achieve. Although situated in Puerto Banus, their prices do not reflect their prestigious location with burgers starting at €7.66 and their brilliant children’s menu priced at only €5.66 for a main course, dessert and drink. Every Saturday Route 66 welcome the Harley Davison Club, who park their collection of elite vehicles outside the restaurant for all the customers to enjoy, an exciting addition to your morning breakfast! Open seven days a week, Route 66 caters for everyone; vegetarians haven’t been forgotten (the Springfield Rolls are a must!) and if you are hoping to stick to your bikini diet, there is something for you too, with their healthy choices including

the 66 House Salad, Cajun Shrimp and West Coast Salmon Fillet. In addition to their outstanding dining options, Route 66 are also proud to present their luxury wine cellar. General Manager, Dom Aldworth boasts many years’ experience and invites you to experience a private tour prior to your meal allowing you to make an informed wine selection. One element Route 66 have replicated from the States is their exceptional customer service; “despite working in the industry for as long as I can remember, this is the first time I can truly say I have a team who adore their job and are as passionate about the product as the owners themselves,” explained Dom, “I have had so many customers express what a joy it is to return to a restaurant and for the staff to remember their names and even the drinks and menu choices they have enjoyed on a previous visit.” Already attracting the rich and famous, Peter Crouch and supermodel wife Abbie Clancy as well as footballers, Matt Etherington and Glenn Johnson, who recently tweeted, “Just had the T-bone in ‘Route66 Marbella’ defo recommend it....” Route 66 looks like it has officially gained a reputation as one of the newest hotspots to visit. With a dedicated sports bar, and a sunny outside terrace with an outdoor screen showcasing all the upcoming Euro 2012 games, a visit to Route 66 may just offer you the chance to catch the Euro games with the Premiership players themselves, not many places can offer that! LUNCH AT W
hen we asked Marbella’s first ladies of fashion if they’d like to join Society Marbella for lunch at La Fishita, the answer was a resounding, “yes”! Coordinating the diaries of four busy women is never an easy task, especially when they are all fashion boutique owners, but with the offer of fish and chips on the table Jane Clark of Twist Boutique, Nina Brodin of Nina B, Gunnel Bergman of Gunnel’z Fashion and Elle Morgan, quickly made room in their schedules. The aim of bringing these four lovely ladies together was to get their feedback on the wonderful lunchtime menu at La Fishita, the recently opened contemporary fish and chip shop behind the Casino in Nueva Andalucia. Already gaining a reputation as a great spot for dinner, as well as for its take away service, not many people know that La Fishita also excels as a lunchtime dining destination. It’s easy to find and easy to park, which only added to its allure as a convenient meeting point for friends during the daytime. The outdoor terrace is a beautiful spot to sit in the sunshine and kill a few hours over freshly prepared food and a glass of wine. And despite being billed as a ‘fish and chip’ shop there is a lot more to this restaurant than meets the eye. As well as traditional fish and chips, La Fishita serves up many options that could be considered more appropriate for a light lunch. The best example of this comes when two of our diners immediately opted for the grilled fillet of whole lemon sole. “Coming from Sweden, fish and chips isn’t something I’d normally choose for lunch,” says Nina. “But
114
now I know I can come here and have a healthy fish dish with a salad, I’d definitely come back.” Gunnel, who is also Swedish and opted for the same dish, agrees. “I have been dying to come to La Fishita for ages, I’ve heard great things about it and,
this lemon sole is just perfect for lunchtime.” Elle and Jane, on the other hand, went for more traditional options. “I can’t resist fish and chips,” Jane confesses as the waiter delivers her a portion of battered cod with chunky chips. “And these are possibly the best I have eaten in Spain,” she adds later on during lunch. Elle took a day out of her carb free diet to have the scampi with a mixed salad. “I haven’t had avocado in six weeks!” she laughs. “I can’t believe how beautifully the food is presented,” adds the style guru, who even sees the beauty in what she eats.
€10 LUNCH SPECIAL MENU Choose from battered cod or haddock, breaded scampi or plaice, jumbo sausage or a steak burger. All are served with your choice of potatoes/salad and a side dish. Soft drink, tea, beer or glass of wine also included. All in all the ladies gave La Fishita the thumbs up and agreed they’d be back as soon as possible to try more of the restaurant’s fishilicious dishes. La Fishita is open Monday to Saturday from 1pm till late. All dishes available to eat in or take away. T
ravelling with Children
Are you travelling with your children this summer? Here are some tips to make the most of your next family vacation.
PLAN AHEAD
Research your holiday destination, this will help you to pack what you really need. If you find out your destination has lots of mosquitos, don’t forget to take protection. You should also pre-book accommodation, transport, and fun activities saving you time, queue’s and stress when there. Book a child friendly hotel where your kids are free to run around happily… and noisily! If you have older children, a baby or more than one child, it is best to rent an apartment. This gives you more space, the possibility of preparing food and you won´t need to feel so sorry for the person in the room next door if your baby keeps you up all night. It is also best to arrange transport on arrival. If the destination has long distances between locations, think of renting you’re own car giving you the freedom to adapt to your families travel schedule.
MAKE A CHECK LIST
It is so easy to forget things in the last minute rush, like leaving your child’s favourite teddy bear behind when you rush out to the airport at 6am, only to realise as the plane is taking off. Best to divide tasks and duties with your partner. This will make you a super efficient team and will save you the unpleasant… “but I thought you had … “ arguments.
PACKING
Packing is very important and here are some essentials to think of. Baby wipes, baby wipes and more baby wipes... It is incredible how useful they are. If there are specific products you need, like special food or medication, it’s advised you bring them with you. This will save you doing a supermarket tour trying to find familiar brands or a midnight pharmacy search... Make sure you always have water, juices and snacks with you. If you don’t want to be hearing `Are we there yet?´, repeatedly, then make sure you have stocked up on entertainment, books, games, DVD players, iPods, battery chargers and headphones. My big tip here is audiobooks. They are a great way of challenging kids imagination and they can listen to amazing tales and adventures while on a long journey, also eliminating the risk of car sickness. Another great pastime is painting, ideal for buying you some time for a coffee after a nice meal in a restaurant. Paint tablets are less messy than traditional paints! Other basics to think of are sunscreen and mosquito repellant.
TRAVEL EQUIPMENT
Activities
If you’ve stopped using a pram but your little one still fits in it, consider taking it with you. It is a perfect place for a toddler to take a rest from long sightseeing walks or to take a nap anywhere, any time. Get a basic one that is light for travelling as they tend to be cheaper and you will not feel so bad getting rid of it after the trip. Always have a blanket at hand. These serve many purposes including a cover when cold, a surface to play on, a cot cover and can give shade at any hour of the day. There are great travel kits out there, from foldable cots to rucksack carriers.. for more info check: babysaway.com, travellingwithchildren.com, totsonthego.com, jetsetbabies.com

WARNING
Unfortunately for the majority of our furry friends, summer is not a pleasant time of the year. It is usually spent searching for shade, suffering from heat, and lots and lots of scratching… yes the warm summer time is the season of fleas and ticks. A lot of washing is recommended in the summer months to keep your pet and your home parasite free. There are many different products that target various stages of flea and tick development. Below you will find information to help you decide what products are best to keep your pet flea and tick free!
FURRY FRIENDS
DO NOT use dog products on cats. Some topical flea treatments for dogs contain Permethrin, which can be lethal to cats. It is important to follow the instructions carefully, particularly dosage based on weight. You also need to check that the product is safe for puppies and kittens, pregnant animals or mother’s feeding.
Flea Shampoo Bathing with flea and tick shampoo is effective but be aware that fleas will run to any dry spots on the head and ears or stay in the bedding and jump right back on the animal after a few hours . Cats have a general aversion to water and will normally object, often viciously, to a bath if they are not used to it. Flea Powders Flea powders have to be applied carefully so that you and your animal don’t inhale the dangerous powder which can cause serious irritation. The powder usually doesn’t stay on the animal and there is a high chance that the animal will end up swallowing some of it during grooming. Sprays A spray will get rid of fleas very quickly but due to it´s toxic ingredients they should be used as a ‘one-off’. It is best to spray the animal and follow with a bath shortly after to get rid of the poison. Collars Flea collars are also available but not recommended. They are quite toxic and normally not very effective. As they are situated around the neck they do not help to eliminate fleas on other parts of the body.
Remember to check for ticks. They are the main parasite responsible in transmitting illnesses between animals as well as transmitting infections and diseases from animals to humans. A great trick to remove them is by applying olive oil where the head is biting the skin, then grab and twist the tick until it releases the animal. Make sure the head is not left inside your pet, as it will just regenerate a new body. Once you have removed the tick make sure you disinfect the wound to avoid any other infections.
Topical Flea Treatments, Spot Drop Topical flea control treatments are applied directly onto a dog or cat’s skin. The animal’s natural body oils distribute the medication throughout its skin and hair. Advantix is one of the most popular products available today. It works by eliminating flea, larvae and ticks in the environment and offers control against mosquitoes, biting flies and lice, as well as preventing the transmission of serious diseases such as leishmaniasis. It remains effective for about a month even after bathing or exposure to the rain, thanks to its waterproof formula. Oral flea medications The most popular oral product is Program. It works like a baby pill for fleas, it breaks the cycle of the flea reproduction and gradually stops the flea population. The main downside is that it doesn´t have a residual effect and new fleas can crawl onto the animal and lay eggs. Natural remedies There are alternative remedies, these take about a month to have an effect but are a great natural prevention. The addition of garlic to your pet’s meals will help to keep fleas away. Homemade repellents with brewers yeast and apple cider or vinegar are also popular. Check out earthclinic.com for more tips. ADANA (Association for the Rights of Abandoned Animals) is a charity run entirely by volunteers, it aims to provide facilities for the shelter and care of abandoned animals, assisting the local authorities and promoting understanding, respect and affection for animals.
