Swift Sensation

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT

This month SOCIETY MARBELLA introduces country and pop sensation, Taylor Swift.

By Christie Holland

B

orn on December 13th, 1989 in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, Taylor Swift displayed a love of music from a young age, crafted songs from five years old whilst growing up on her parents Christmas tree farm. At the age of 13, Taylor moved to Nashville, Tennessee and signed with RCA records. However after a year Taylor got out of her contract following a disagreement over not wanting to record other people’s songs. Around the same time, Taylor became the youngest songwriter ever to sign a publishing deal with Sony. Eventually record executive Scott Borchetta encouraged Taylor to sing and write under his indie label, Big Machine Records. She released her first single, Tim McGraw, which she began writing during a math class, in 2006, and the song peaked at number six on the country charts. It also appeared on her self-titled debut album in October of that same year, selling more than 2.5 million copies. Her third single, Our Song resulted in Taylor becoming the youngest person ever to single-handedly write and perform a number one song on the country charts. In 2007 Taylor took home the coveted Horizon award at the Country Music Associate Awards. “I can’t even believe that this is real,” she exclaimed during her acceptance speech. “I want to thank God and my family for moving to Nashville so I could do this. The fans – you have changed my life. This is definitely the highlight of my senior year!” This was followed by a 2008 Grammy nomination in the best new artist category along with the Academy of Country Music’s

“No matter what happens in life, be good to people. Being good to people is a wonderful legacy to leave behind.”

“I’ve found time can heal most anything and you just might find who you’re supposed to be.”º

“Female Vocalist of the Year” Award, the American Music Awards “Favorite Female Country Artist” award, and the American Music Association’s “Horizon” award. This was succeeded by Taylor’s second album, Fearless which became the best-selling album of 2009 and achieved four Grammy Awards as well as an MTV Video Music Award making Taylor the only country music star ever to take home a prize at the desirable award ceremony. Rolling Stone called Swift “a songwriting savant with an intuitive gift for versechorus-bridge architecture. If she ever tires of stardom, she could retire to Sweden and make a fine living churning out hits for Kelly Clarkson and Katy Perry.” In 2010 Taylor made the jump to the big screen starring in, Valentine’s Day with ex-beau, Twilight’s Taylor Lautner. Later that year Taylor was announced as the face of CoverGirl, following in the footsteps of Drew Barrymore, Ellen DeGeneres and Queen Latifah. Taylor’s third album, Speak Now, featured fourteen original songs all written solely by Taylor herself. Musically, it has been described as the album that “expands beyond countrypop to border both alternative rock and dirty bubblegum pop”. The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard charts, became the sixteenth album in US history to sell one million copies in a single week and sold over 5.7 million copies worldwide. During 2011- 2012 Taylor performed her sellout 111-date world tour playing seven shows in Asia, twelve shows in Europe, 80 shows in North America and twelve shows in Australasia inviting many famous musicians to join her along

“Music has taken me all over the world, but the fans are the reason it’s been so magical. I’m so blown away by how nice they are to me. It’s strange to feel so understood by such a large group of people, but I love it.”

the way including, Justin Bieber, Jason Mraz, Flo Rida, Usher, Selena Gomez and Nicki Minaj. Taylor voiced the character of Audrey in the 2012 hit movie Dr. Seuss’s The LORAX, and also contributed two songs to the soundtrack of the movie The Hunger Games. Her latest release Red, has been critically acclaimed by music critics who praised Taylor’s versatility and creativity. Red sold 1,208,000 copies in the US in its first week, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 chart, the second-highest debut for a female artist, behind Oops!... I Did It Again by Britney Spears. “For the last two years, I’ve been working on an album called Red,” revealed Taylor. “I called it Red

because of the tumultuous, crazy adventures in love and loss that it chronicles. In my mind, when you experience love that’s fast paced and out of control and mixes infatuation, jealousy, frustration, miscommunication, and all of those lovely emotions… in retrospect, it all looks red.”

“She’s one of the few genuine rock stars we’ve got these days, with a flawless ear for what makes a song click.” Rolling Stone on Taylor Swift

THE SPIN

Demi by Demi Lovato Multi-platinum recording artist and X Factor USA judge, Demi Lovato, is set to release her fourth studio album, Demi, this month. I experimented with a variety of different sounds and poured my heart into writing these songs. I’m so excited for everyone to finally get the chance to hear them!” The Conversation by Texas To commemorate their 25th anniversary, Texas, release their brand new studio album, The Conversation. How Ya Doin’? by Little Mix ft. Missy Elliott UK pop sensations and X factor winners, Little Mix team up with the legendary Missy Elliott for their new single How Ya Doin’? Missy provides a sensational guest rap on this brand new re-work of the funk-filled, old-school referencing track. “We honestly can’t believe Missy is on our song! She’s been one of our biggest idols forever – it’s incredible. As soon as we thought there might be a chance she’d appear on the track we did literally everything we could to make sure it happened,” revealed the talented foursome. How Ya Doin? is the fourth single from Little Mix’s platinum debut ‘DNA’. Time by Rod Stewart This month sees pop/rock icon Rod Stewart release his first collection of all-new material since 2001. The themes covered with new album, Time, are “a little more adult now,” according to Stewart. “There’s no ‘Hot Legs.’ But they’re, I think, songs people can relate to.”

Nocturnes by Little Boots Little Boots aka Victoria Hesketh became one of the most talked about new pop stars around when she arrived with her critically acclaimed debut Hands in 2009, a record which sold over 100,000 copies in the UK alone and culminated in a triumphant set at Coachella in 2010. Línea directa reports on new legislation for paying fines

On March 4th this year, new legislation governing the payment of fines for traffic offences was introduced in Spain. According to the new law, drafted and passed by the Spanish Directorate-General of Traffic (Dirección General de Tráfico) and the Ministry of the Interior, the payment of traffic fines in cash will no longer be accepted, and only payment by debit or credit card will be allowed. The authorities have cited security and economic efficiency as the reasons behind their decision due to the fact that once this new measure has been introduced, the risks and expenses involved with transporting money, will no longer exist.

According to the DGT, the measure will only apply to the payment of fines. All the other administrative operations carried out at Provincial Traffic Headquarters, such as processing or renewing a driving licence, can still be paid for in cash. In order to make the payment, drivers must access the DGT webpage, www.dgt.es, or call the number 060. Although Provincial Headquarters will no longer accept payments in cash, drivers can still pay their fines in cash at any post office or Banco Santander branch. In this case, drivers will still be required to provide and attach the fine reference number.

s May approaches every year, Hollywood’s elite flock to the French Riviera for the most prestigious film event of the year showcasing everything from Oscar predicted box office hits to indie documentaries. However only a personal invitation will allow you access to the inner workings of the renowned Cannes Film Festival. From May 15 to May 26 2013, the region will welcome the 66th annual offering where 19 international films will compete from around the world for the sought-after Palme d’Or an honour capable of significantly boosting a picture’s box office and awards potential. The event dates back to the late 1930’s but was officiated as the “Festival du film de Cannes” in 1947, when 16 countries presented their cinematic sensations. During this year equality for countries was introduced thus allowing only one representative from each country to take their place on the jury. Financial difficulties and calendar crashes troubled the event in the late forties and early fifties, then in 1957 Dolores de Rio was announced as the first female member of the jury and the festival began to gain mass media attention. During the 1970’s and 1980’s big changes began to occur to the official structure and later to the location of the festival with a much bigger Palais des Festivals et des Congrès built in 1983 to accommodate the growing event. This year, the acclaimed event welcomes the iconic American film director and twice Academy Award winner, Steven Spielberg to take on the role of The President of the Jury. Reigning over the jury for the smaller “Un Certain Regard” prize will be Danish director Thomas Vinterberg whose film The Hunt competed last year. Ryan Gosling and Nicolas Winding Refn return for their second partnership with Only God Forgives. Their 2011 movie, the intense thriller, Drive was nominated for the esteemed Palme d’Or award but lost out to Terence Malick’s The Tree of Life. However, Refn did take home the coveted best director accolade.

“Cannes belongs to each and every one of us who, year after year, from wherever we are and in our own individual way, contributes towards creating it step by step. It is only by constantly analyzing the Festival, adapting its function and encouraging debate about it that we will continue to make it the very best it can be. Cannes must be open to new ideas, while remaining faithful to its past, of course. Diversity can only enrich it. That’s what makes the Festival de Cannes our festival.” Thierry Frémaux Other film previews this year include Roman Polanski’s Venus in Fur in which he cast his wife Emmanuelle Seigner, Inside Llewyn Davis by the Coen brothers and Steven Soderbergh’s eagerly anticipated Liberace biopic, starring Michael Douglas and Matt Damon. Director, Soderbergh, who was the youngest person to take home the Palme d´Or in 1989 for his independent film, Sex, Lies and Videotape, carefully tells the story of the flamboyant entertainer, who disguised his homosexuality from the public.

Baz Luhrmann’s, The Great Gatbsy, starring Leonardo DiCaprio (who will make his return to Cannes for the first time since 2007, Isla Fisher, Carey Mulligan and Tobey McGuire has already attracted worldwide attention and will open the festival this year. The screening of Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring starring Harry Potter star, Emma Watson will open the “Un Certain Regard” competition on May 16 and Zulu, a South African cop thriller starring Orlando Bloom and Forest Whittaker has been selected to close the show.

Cannes president Gilles Jacob said this year’s competition reflected “an attitude which, decade in decade out, guarantees the continuing existence of this institution. The idea is one I particularly like, and it sees the festival as a shelter for endangered artists”.

KIM KOLD

FAST, FURIOUS AND LIVING AMONGST US This month SOCIETY MARBELLA talks to local resident and the star of the upcoming Fast & the Furious 6 film, Kim Kold.

How did you develop a career in acting? I was spotted whilst working as a bodybuilder and asked to play the role of Dennis in a story of a gentle giant; a shy man, who despite his size, lives with his mother in a small home in Denmark. The short 20-minute movie has now been watched close to 5,000,000 times on YouTube! That led to a couple of small roles in two Danish movies. Then after the unexpected success of Dennis, the producers wanted to continue his story and asked me to appear in Teddy Bear, the big screen continuation of Dennis, which was shot mainly in Thailand. It was after the release of Teddy Bear, that Universal noticed me and I was then asked if I would meet Justin Lin, the Director of FF6, who cast me as Klaus. I shot the movie in locations around Europe; it is set for release on May 24th this year. Before your acting career you succeeded in a multiple of professions, can you share your story with us? Well I started out playing professional football as a goalkeeper for a popular Danish team. Injury led to me to the gym where I developed an interest in bodybuilding and went onto compete in the field for around 14 yrs. I have also worked as a locksmith; have been involved with the security business as well nightclubs and bars. You spend a lot of time in Marbella? What attracted you to the region? I currently live full time in Marbella, and have done so for around 5 years. I have some very good friends here and of course (in comparison to Denmark,) the great weather was a big attraction for me. What was it like working on the latest Fast and Furious installment? Working on the Fast and the Furious was a fantastic experience and one I hope to have the opportunity to enjoy again. Are you excited for the release? Of course, I am very excited for the release, I can’t wait to see it playing in cinema’s in and around Marbella.

34

What was it like working with Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson? It was really enjoyable. They all made me feel very welcome and are truly good guys. Plus when it was time for ‘action’ they were real professionals. How do you spend your time when you are not working? Well I spend a lot of time with my fiance Zana, and our two dogs (Tyson & Lilo) and of course I still work out regularly. I also have an interest/ partnership at Sisu Boutique Hotel, where I spend a lot of my ‘free’ time. What does the future hold in store for you? I believe I will continue making movies as it is something I really enjoy. I have some offers in the pipeline, which I hope to capitalize on. I also plan to get married soon and of course I am involved with Sisu Boutique Hotel. I am about to launch a ‘Sisu Boot Camp’, which I will be overseeing. It will feature specialist-training routines and diet programs, which I expect to be very popular in the coming months!

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

SOMETHING TO

Smile ABOUT

D

ental Care Marbella offers an extensive range of gentle and effective dentistry services in a tranquil and supportive environment, delivered with one goal in mind; to create beautiful, confident smiles for life. Located in the oasis of tranquillity that is Laguna Village, Estepona, Dr. Martha Laguilavo’s passion for dentistry was the driving force behind establishing this high-end clinic for patients who are looking for high quality aesthetic dentistry. “When designing the clinic I always kept in mind that the interior design of a surgery creates the first and lasting impression with patients,” explained dental implantologist, Dr. Martha Laguilavo. “It expresses your individuality as a professional and helps to put patients at ease. I wanted to create an atmosphere that was calm and relaxing by using fresh and modern design elements” The interior design of Dental Care Marbella has been inspired by the principles of holistic dentistry. Warm shades and restrained, indirect illumination allows patients to feel immediately at home, while the stylish seating area adds a whole new dimension in comfort. The use of Asian inspired floral arrangements and artefacts unleash positive energy, reduce anxiety and boosts staff morale. “The exceptionally warm and professional team is on hand to provide an extensive range of dental treatments, from implants to porcelain veneers. In addition to general dentistry, we specialise in everything from dental crowns and teeth whitening to complete smile makeovers.” “Our experienced dental practitioners devote ample time to the individual needs of the patients. In complicated cases we work together with members of other medical disciplines, thus ensuring optimum therapy outcomes.” “We are pleased to have served patients of all ages in our clinic and the combination of continuing education and state-of-the-art equipment allows us to offer you and your family the high level of care you require.”

40

IMPLANTS

To be clear: what nature has created is not easy to replace. An implant - an artificial root - will therefore not be precisely equal to the root of your own tooth or molar, but will nevertheless come as close as possible to most of its characteristics. Missing teeth or molars can also be replaced by implants. In all these cases you will eat, talk and laugh just like before.

WHITENING

Our laser whitening treatment is carried out in the clinic and is ideal for those who want fast and effective results. The whitening gel is applied directly to the teeth and a state of the art laser is used to activate the gel, resulting in lighter and brighter teeth. You can expect to see extremely significant results, in other words an improvement of 10 shades, in just an hour. If you prefer, you can whiten your teeth in the privacy of your own home using our custom made trays and whitening gel; this treatment uses a mild oxygen releasing gel and is simple and effective for those who want a more gradual and discreet whitening effect. Simply apply the gel using the trays for 30 minutes per day. You can expect to become three to five shades lighter in just five days. However, depending on the amount of discolouration, you have you may choose to continue whitening for up to 10 days until you achieve the desired results.

VENEERS AND CROWNS

All our veneers and crowns are all ceramic, a natural substance that is particularly well tolerated by the body and is very similar to the natural enamel of the tooth. Both materials are extremely durable and there is no difference in expansion by heat and cold, so they have

no influence on each other. Because there is no metal in ceramic one does not encounter the problem of metal in the mouth and unnecessary electrical stress that can result from the proximity of a gold crown to an amalgam filling. Increasingly patients are striving to achieve metal-free restorations. Why not book an appointment at Dental Care Marbella and discover how you can have the perfect smile you’ve always dreamed of? COLOUR ME

Pretty

This season treat your tresses to a whole new look with the latest head-turning options. Hair expert extraordinaire, Zoe Woods, head technician and owner of Wood Salon, takes us through her top predictions for this summer’s hottest hair colours.

IT WILL BE ALL WHITE ON THE NIGHT BEAUTIFUL BRIGHTS INSPIRE BLONDES

Blonde is also the perfect canvas for other shades. Rather than having allover bright colours or dip dyed ends, colourful streaks can be placed into the hair for a cheeky play on the colour trend

FLAMING HOT VIBRANT SHADES SPICE UP RED FOR SPRING/SUMMER Red has never been a shade for the shy retiring type. Unlike previous years, when the hyper- fake look dominated, the Rihanna red for example, this season it is all about high definition versions of natural hues. Rich coppers, auburn and ruby colours are full of vibrancy with a high gloss, super natural finish. This summer, reds are bright as fire and sparkling like burning embers. With designers using emeralds and royals blues in their colour palettes, reds are set to shine as they offset these key shades.

Platinum ice white blonde is set to make a style statement this season. We will see a move away from duller shades into a cleaner, brighter ice white tone. A full head of white, clean platinum blonde creates a bold statement, especially when it is showcased on a cute pixie crop, dishevelled updo or a sleek ponytail.

BRUNETTE IS BACK WARM UP BRUNETTES WITH SHADES INSPIRED BY NATURE The palette for brunettes, cherrywood, mahogany and red cedar, inspire a luxurious new take on brown; these colours present themselves more elegantly this season. We’ll be seeing a return to rosewood and mulberry tones for the ultimate high fashion, high shine brunette. Think Kate Middleton’s clever multi-tonal, colour rich locks. The overall look shouts “Expensive!”, yet it is still so natural. It is all about a luxurious, glossy feel that oozes health and shine.

ALSO WATCH OUT FOR... Short, sharp, asymmetrical styles - they are on the rise. Very Vidal Sassoon. It’s all about curls, but a more casual look, from gentle waves to curled ends. Long hair is having a moment. As I specialise in extensions, I am getting inundated with requests from clients who want long hair fast!

A healthy

SPINE LIFE

means a healthier

90% of people have poor posture; this can be caused by how you sit at work, do things at home, or carry things the wrong way

This ad is for people who love the beach... Summer is almost upon us… long sunny days; warm, balmy nights. Fabulous! After all, it’s why we live in Spain. The only problem for most of us is that summer also means strutting your stuff in a bikini or a swimsuit…. maybe even those dreaded speedos! Let’s face it, unless you’re a catwalk model, it can be a trying time. Few of us enjoy counting calories or preparing tasteless low-fat meals. And joining a gym is even less appealing. But don’t despair! Having trained people of all ages, shapes and sizes in the privacy and comfort of their own homes, we’ve developed techniques that don’t need bulky gym equipment. But they’ll certainly work to get you beach-fit! And the health benefits don’t stop at a fitter body. Whether you want to lose weight or tone up for the beach, we provide expert meal planning and nutrition advice. Please call 691 468 106 to arrange your initial free fitness appraisal, or visit www.paulisaacspt.com for more details.

…but don’t love the beachwear.

PLUMP UP THE VOLUME

Nicola McGeorge tries out the latest must have celebrity beauty treatment, the Intraceuticals Oxygen Infusion Facial, performed by skin specialist, Sofia at the Pure Skin Beauty Room.

Okay, I know I am going to shock my regular readers, but I haven’t had a facial in over four months. My skin is simply horrendous; congested, dull, dehydrated and you could play join the dots with my pigmentation. So when I was invited to try out the Oxygen Infusion Facial that Madonna swears by, I was not going to turn it down. Not sure what Intraceuticals or Oxygen Infusion Facials are? Here’s the scoop. Sofia, owner of Pure Skin Beauty, has nearly 30 years experience in the industry and prides herself on being a skin specialist. She offers an extensive range of treatments, from the Ling New Yorks Advanced DNA Do Not Age Facial to the decadent Forbidden Rice Body Treatment. Product wise, I loved the fact that she hasn’t taken on complete lines, but handpicked her favourites from the world’s leading brands. I can’t wait to try out the Heaven by Deborah Mitchell Bee Venom Mask, which is loved by the Duchess of Cambridge.

After a warm welcome, Sofia, a self confessed skin care nut, got down to business. Following an indepth study of my skin, she decided I was in desperate need of a deep cleansing before the oxygen treatment. “Most therapists offering oxygen facials will only do a basic cleanse before the treatment,” she explained. “However, I believe it is crucial first to exfoliate and remove dead skin cells and unclog pores. Failure to extract build-up of blackheads and dead skin prevents any product from penetrating properly.” Sofia started off by cleansing and massaging my skin, which was so relaxing I almost started to drool. This was followed by a Glycolic mask and steam to open those pores. I do LOVE a good steam and cannot believe that most salons on the Coast do not offer this. After a quick exfoliation with papaya peel, she set to work on extractions before she was finally satisfied that my skin was now in the right condition for the oxygen treatment. Intraceuticals Oxygen Therapy is more than just a facial: the combination of pressurised oxygen and a special form of hyaluronic acid creates a visible result

ACHES AND PAINS

you can instantly see and feel. Additionally, the application of pressurized oxygen increases the absorption of the infusion which helps the skin retain hydration and moisture. Once hydration is balanced your skin will look and feel healthier and more vital - additionally many other common skin complaints will naturally disappear. This is why it is a great treatment to have after the likes of microdermabrasion or laser, as it reduces any redness and soothes the skin. It is also ideal before a red carpet event, as make–up goes on beautifully afterwards. Following this pain free treatment the effects were astounding; my skin was plumped, fine lines were visibly reduced and I looked rejuvenated, radiant and fresh. Best of all the results continued to improve over the following last week. What’s not to love? Pure Skin, Tel: +34 661 279 575 www.pureskin.es

DOWN THE DRAIN

Stressed out insomniac Marcus Moriarty is starting to feel the effects of his hectic lifestyle. Desperate for some relief from his constant back pain, he tries out lymphatic drainage massage and reflexology at the Beauty Room San Pedro.

I arrived at the salon with my phone glued to my ear, arguing with an incompetent member of staff and I feel like I am about to have a heart attack. After slamming down the phone I apologise to owner Judith, who assures me that she is used to it, as many of her clients are high flying business men and women. “I have to be quite selective with my clients,” she confesses. “I need to be, as some of my regulars are very well known. For this reason I make sure that I book half an hour either side of appointments. Not only does this mean my clients can relax after their treatment, but they will not bump into the next customer on the way out.” After asking me to relax on the treatment bed, she asks me a series of questions before recommending a combined treatment of lymphatic drainage massage and reflexology. With more than two decades of experience in the industry and a CV that includes 11 years as the “Supervisor for training staff” for the world famous beauty company Steiner Beauty Company, I have high expectations.

44

Judith begins with reflexology, which works on the principle that every organ and system of the body has a corresponding point or zone in the feet. It can be used to treat a wide range of disorders including skin and respiratory conditions, migraine, PMS and menopausal problems, chronic fatigue, stress, depression and anxiety. She uses a light pressure to massage each of the points in my toes, feet and ankles to release tension, removing energy blockages, stimulate blood circulation and promote healing of both body and mind. For the most part it was wonderfully relaxing and soothing, however at certain points I experienced some slight discomfort. Judith explained that this was because there were blockages in those particular areas. She picked up a weakness in my kidneys; I am prone to kidney stones. She then mentioned eye strain and headaches, a daily occurrence in my life, stress (when am I not stressed?) and finally my digestive system. Mmm…that could be down to the 20 course menu tasting I did yesterday.

Next was the Lymphatic drainage massage, an advanced therapy whereby specialised and gentle techniques are used to move the skin in the direction of the lymph flow and towards the lymph nodes in the body. It has powerful cleansing, relaxing, pain relieving and immunological effects and can be applied, to great effect, to a wide range of physical conditions. She concentrated on my problem areas and combined massage with cupping, which draws out inflammation and oedema without adding to the problem. That night I slept like a baby, and woke up pain free and in a very good mood. My partner couldn’t believe it; let’s just say I am not usually a morning person. I was so happy with the results that I have booked in for another treatment in two weeks time. The Beauty Room San Pedro +34 655 013 064 www.beautytherapistmarbella.com

TIPS from a

TRAINER PROS: Low cost, group support and motivation CONS: Lack of individual attention, ‘one size fits all’ solution, often weather-dependent The rise in popularity of Boot Camps can be attributed to 2 things; media coverage as a result of TV programmes such as Celebrity Fit Club and The Biggest Loser, plus the fact that participation is cheap for members. For a small amount of money, anyone can turn up and be put through their paces by a qualified Personal Trainer. Many people enjoy the camaraderie that prevails as each person strives to achieve their goals as part of a group of like-minded people, and results are often very good. The best Boot Camps offer a great variety of activities that result in a full body workout. Ideal for anyone looking for low-cost, organised exercise, Boot Camps aren’t for everybody though. Apart from the fact that most classes take place in unpredictable weather and often in public view, sessions can also tend to become a ‘one size fits all’ type of solution.

With plenty of options available to get you into shape these days, our resident fitness and nutrition expert, Paul Isaacs, looks at the pros and cons of two of the most popular keep-fit regimes - Boot Camps and Personal Training, to help you decide if either may be right for you.

Participants are likely to all have different aims, abilities and issues. One may want to lose weight, one may want to gain weight, while another may have a niggling injury. If any participants need care or advice regarding specific problems with injuries, ability or ‘form’, they need to be aware that they may not receive the specific or individual attention that they require.

PROS: Individual attention, bespoke-designed programmes, privacy CONS: Cost We live in a world obsessed with looks and image, and in a society on the brink of an obesity epidemic, so what was once regarded as a lifestyle accessory of the rich and famous, having a Personal Trainer is something that more and more people now regard as a ´part´ of their general well-being. A client´s relationship with a Personal Trainer should be highly consultative, one in which the trainer utilises his/her experience and expertise to develop a

tailored exercise and nutrition programme, focusing on the client´s specific goals and needs. Because the relationship is consultative in nature, the trainer will be aware of the client’s insecurities, abilities and weaknesses, and will be able to adjust the programme to benefit the client to best effect. Make sure that the Personal Trainer is devising a plan to help YOU, rather than putting together a programme to suit his/ her own interests or timescales. Trainers are employed in a variety of ways. Some clients want a regular weekly arrangement on a long-standing basis so that health and fitness becomes a closely monitored and integral part of everyday life, while some clients prefer to use their trainer for a body ‘blitz’, for instance when preparing for a holiday or wedding. Although personal training is considered expensive by some, clients have the advantage of being able to train in a gym, outside or in the privacy of a studio or their own home.

Make your health matter during Spinal Health Week

f you spend most of your day sitting, whether it’s at work, in the car, travelling, or watching TV, you are not alone. As a society of sitters this is taking its toll on our health. Almost all of us will suffer from back pain at some point in our lives, with one in five experiencing chronic back problems. In fact, low back pain (LBP) is the leading cause of disability worldwide. As part of Spinal Health Week 2013, Mark Lane of Marbella Chiropractic is encouraging all of us to prioritise our spinal health by sitting less and moving more.“Correct posture is one of the keys to not only a healthier spine, but to overall health”. “Posture affects and moderates every human function from breathing to hormonal production. Spinal pain, headache, mood, blood pressure, pulse and lung capacity are among the functions most easily influenced by posture”. If you consider that more than 90 percent of the energy output of the brain is used to help your physical body move in gravity, the more distorted a person’s posture, the less energy available for thinking, metabolism and healing. “With chiropractic we look to redirect the brain energy that is being wasted on poor body

function back to restoring health and allowing your body to heal” says Mark. How is your posture? When you look at yourself straight on in the mirror is an ear, shoulder or hip higher than the other? If you stand with your back against the wall, do you have to push your head and/or pelvis back to get them to touch the wall? If you answered yes to any of these you may well have postural distortion not only potentially causing aches and pains but also other health problems. To improve your posture, and overall health see a chiropractor, however here are some basic tips: • When sitting, position your lower back against the very back of the chair; consider putting a small cushion or rolled up towel in the small of your lower back • Try not to sit in one position for a long period of time; take a quick stretch break every 30-45 minutes. • Avoid working on smart phones and other devices for extended periods of times as they can cause you to hunch forward in order to use the smaller screens/ keyboards

As part of Spinal Health Week (20-26 May 2013) Marbella Chiropractic is offering the chance to have a consultation for just €20, giving you the opportunity to learn more about your health and how chiropractic can help you. Janey MEETS Holly

he Voice TV presenter and Very.co.uk designer, Holly Willoughby put real women on the runway this season with her campaign to celebrate the female form. Known for her appreciation of natural beauty and feminine curves Holly launched a competition to find ‘real women’ to appear alongside the professional models in her latest collection for Very.co.uk.

48

“It’s time to celebrate all women!” Holly Willoughby

Proving that her designs look as good on real women as they do on models, Holly invited the four fans, including former Marbella resident, Janey Freeman, to join her and launch her latest range at Claridges. Lucy Ellis, Aillie Galloway, Emily Birtles and Janey Freeman were the lucky participants selected from nearly 1,000 applicants to support Holly’s campaign through Very.co.uk’s Facebook page. “I want to show my clothes as they should be seen,” revealed Holly, “on real women with real figures walking down the catwalk. This is when the clothes will look their best and the women looked absolutely gorgeous. I am so proud of them. The idea of showing the collection on both models and real women allows me to show my collection to its true potential and celebrate the female form!” “Holly’s collection is all about pieces that are flattering, feminine and wearable,” exclaimed Jon Owen, Retail Director of Very.co.uk. “She designs with real women in mind and always considers different shapes and cuts to ensure that there is something

for everyone. We are thrilled that real women are participating in her fashion launch event to show style editors how Holly’s style really works for the everyday women.”

Christie: How did you feel walking down the catwalk? Janey: I loved it! It is such a rush it makes you want to do it more and more!

This month Christie Holland caught up with Janey Freeman and Holly herself to discuss the exciting release.

Christie: Has this opportunity increased your confidence? Janey: I have always been quite confident but it has made me look at things differently. You should just grasp every opportunity cause you never know!

Christie: How did you feel when you found out you had been selected as one of Holly’s Real Women? Janey: I was so surprised! I never win anything; it was completely out of the blue! I’d even forgotten I entered the competition! Christie: What was it like meeting Holly? Janey: That was a really crazy day meeting all the press and Holly was lovely which really put us all at ease. She is very sweet. Christie: What is your favourite piece from the collection? Janey: I like the tropical bodycon dress I wore for the campaign shoot. That is very me! Colourful and summery.

“My collections for Very.co.uk have always been about designing gorgeous dresses to suit all women and I wanted my catwalk event to show how the designs work in reality on real women. As a busy working mum, I know how hard it is to look stylish when you are constantly on the go. That’s why I design pieces that are trend-led but do not require a lot of styling. It’s all about dressing for your shape with a collection designed with all figures in mind – there is something for everyone.” Holly Willoughby

Parasols Because the sun shines!

To complete your terrace design, the right amount of shade and protection from the sun is needed. The challenge is to find the umbrella that is right for you. You can really make a statement with an umbrella, and make shade look dashing, an art of its own, one that this company takes very seriously. Here are some stunning proposals by the world renown Tuuci.

M1 Stingray: “Design-in-motion” best describes TUUCI’s latest shade innovation. An expansive wing to wing birth of shade puts the Stingray in a class of its own. Although designed in 2007, I just have to include these Patricia Urquiola creations due to their timeless design. She approached the outdoors starting from the theme of woven patterns-reviving and personalising the concept with a traditional look in mind, but giving it a decisively contemporary look without using too much nostalgic influence. Vienna straw, with its decorative geometric shape, was her element of inspiration. A stunning and well-achieved design. bebitalia.it

Canasta13

Once again B&B Italia have produced an exquisite collection, not that we expected anything less. Canasta’13 is simply stunning, designed by Patricia Urquiola, she’s given Canasta a taupe melange makeover with the new polyethylene fibre, creating an interlacing that evokes the designer’s crinoline collection. The sofas, armchairs and small armchairs all feature new fabrics and are accompanied by small tables that harmonise with the new colours. bebitalia.it

Elements

Element Sunbeds, total comfort!

Enticing forms and alluring architecture are the core concepts of the Elements collection. The latest creation by designer Gerd Couckhuyt is an ultra-modular outdoor seating island with endless arrangement options. Movable back positions, accessories such as a footrest and an occasional table sliding in a slot, make this island the epitome of serenity and relaxation. A slender strip of illuminating LED lights allows the Elements to hover. The combination of subdued colours and durable materials such as Quartz composite with a soft touch gives the arrangement a certain prestige, offering the ultimate in seating comfort. The Transformation

a Terraza is the missing piece of the puzzle,” revealed

Sala Group’s Ian Radford. “La Sala has already succeeded as a popular venue to dine within an exciting ambiance and begin the night with a few after-dinner drinks, and Aqwa Mist has proved itself to be THE place to party until the early hours, but something was missing. Between the hours La Sala wraps up and before Aqwa Mist really gets going we had a small gap where people naturally want to enjoy the warm summer nights with a drink or two and socialize with friends. We also realized that, although laws have changed, people still smoke and our clientele don’t want to be stood outside the entrance of a club just to enjoy this guilty pleasure. The idea of La Terraza was born and we had a specific time frame to achieve it.” With a specific delivery date and idea in mind Sala Group approached various companies with their vision,

60

whilst some were adamant the aims were impossible one team shoot out. Meeting the design and layout expectations and beating the proposed budget, albeit requiring working through the night and pulling out all the stops FOC Design’s attention to detail, versatility to the design and knowledge of the regulations proved an unbeatable combination. “With the production of 3D mock ups we could really see how the layout and colour scheme would work and felt confident in leaving Hayley to project manage the transformation and not concern ourselves with the details,” explained Ian. “Although the weather was not on our side for the entire duration of the works, the team worked relentlessly – come rain or shine and well into the night. The result exceeded our expectation and, although beautiful in the daytime, La Terraza really comes to life at night showcasing why the design ideas the FOC team proposed work so effectively.”

Before

After What initially started out as an additional feature for Aqwa Mist’s clientele has now become an entirely unique venue to be enjoyed by a much greater collection of visitors. Thus needing its own name, its own identity. “I get a particular buzz out of working on commercial projects,” described project manager, Hayley Reed. “It allows you to really experiment with

ideas that you may have previously wanted to use or implement for a while but that perhaps aren’t 100% suitable for a home. Although there are more rules and regulations to follow when designing for commercial premises, this burden is outweighed by the creativity that has to be used to make something that works for both the owners and their clientele. In a residential project you are aiming to

please one person or a family at most, you are taking their ideas and likes and creating their haven, in a commercial project you have got to please the masses, whilst making sure its practical and commercially viable, and remembering to follow all the rules!

Before

I do love a challenge and this particular project had all of the above to consider and a timescale of less than a month! Once I had viewed the given space and had had the initial consultation with the Sala Group team, it was clear that there needed to be several changes made to some of the ideas previously proposed. Disabled access, fire clearance and general safety have strict guidelines and these need to be adhered to – no questions asked. Initial designs did not consider these legal requirements and would have proposed problems when gaining licenses. We also had a stunning 20-30 year old palm tree in the center of the terrace. Previous designs suggested the removal of the palm, however this required gaining a license, something we neither had the time for nor was it guaranteed to be a successful request.” In addition to all the regulation requirements, the FOC team also needed to ensure that the proud sponsor of the space, Belvedere, were featured within the design. The simplicity and style of the Belvedere branding, already popular with Hayley was selected as a focus. “With the knowledge that this was to be a venue to only be enjoyed after dark, lighting was crucial and would have the most impact within the design. We therefore took the idea of using the Belvedere trees to their maximum potential, basing our idea on a secret garden (much of which came from the fact that although I have been to both La Sala and Aqwa Mist, I was totally unaware of this “secret” space).”

64

Following the lighting and furniture selection, the feature pieces needed concentration to make the venue memorable. “We used solid tree trunks painted silver as the round drinks tables, reinforcing the feeling of being in a magical garden. We initially painted the right hand side fence white to work with the design but I wanted to dress this furthermore. I felt we needed to make the terrace feel more contained. By adding gathered, white voiles along the entire right hand wall we not only helped with the acoustics but also added a homely touch,” continued Hayley. Peter, director and owner of Penanc worked with Hayley’s team on the project and with any joint venture it is vital to be able to work as a team and clearly set out who is responsible for what. This is even more important with such a tough timeframe. “The collaboration was smooth and painless – natural roles of management

COMMERCIALLY SPEAKING came easy,” explained Hayley. “With Penanc, the level of detail matched our own. Peter had considered the natural slant to the floor and allowed the tables to be adjusted by fitting small feet under their bases, the new front door was fitted with twoway hinges to allow the doors to be opened either way and he added an extra panel to the base of the fencing to stop any bottles or spilled glasses running underneath. He even fitted extra guttering over the terrace area to stop excess rain running off the roof onto our new stunning design. With Peter being so wary of the details, it enabled the FOC team to keep on top of the design elements, the important attention to detail and control the subcontractors such as the awning experts and sound professionals. With such trust in both parties and a relentlessly hard-working team, the timeframe could be met and, before

the summer sun visited us once again and our coast attracts the fun-loving tourists a-plenty, the Sala Group had its latest addition complete.” With champagne flowing, canapés being served by stunning staff and an abundance of eager locals ready to see, what must be the quickest transformation in Marbella, La Terraza’s doors were opened. TIPS FOR COMMERCIAL DESIGN By Hayley Reed - FOC Design

KEEPING THE SPACE There is a balance to be achieved in commercial projects – keeping the feeling of space whilst obtaining maximum covers. Space distribution is not only key to comply with fire regulations and disabled access but to make sure the space feels right. To-scale floorplans are a must and 3D renders are even better as you can really get a feeling of the concept being proposed. FOLLOW THE RULES Although commercial design can push the limits, be off-the-wall, adventurous and interesting enough to turn heads, remember that rules and regulations are there to be followed. Make sure you stick to these or employ someone who is knowledgeable about what is allowed and what is not allowed. It can be a pricey mistake to make if something does not fit the commercial criteria required for licensing! PLAN OF WORKS It is a project manager’s responsibility to co-ordinate the entire job and often this includes many subcontractors. A plan of works is a great way to make sure all involved know the order in which the jobs need to be completed. This will avoid too many people on site at once and works having to be repeated due to other trades,

damage etc. Give every “head of department” a plan of works detailing what is happening and when and a list of contact names and numbers so they can communicate between each other. THINK IT THROUGH Unlike residential projects, commercial works are going to get a lot more wear and tear. Use fabrics and materials that are washable, hard wearing and sturdy. Check the Martindale count of fabrics and make sure fabrics are fire guarded! No fire certificate, no opening license. CONSULT It is tempting to try and undertake commercial projects by yourself and avoid unnecessary costs. Your ideas may be fantastic but it is worth every penny to consult with a professional in order to make sure you are not going to hit any hurdles. Even if you merely pay for the consultation per hour we will be able to point out certain potential problems, check the materials you are looking to use and make sure they meet commercial specification and provide alternative options if they do not. We often can help save you money and at the very least, provide peace of mind that the concept will work.

The Art of being STEPHEN

HOWES T

he art scene on the Costa del Sol is booming,” says

Benalmádena-based international fine art dealer, Stephen Howes. “There are a lot of talented artists in this part of the world. In addition, there are a lot of people with money, and who are clever with money, who are keen to buy great pieces of art on the Coast.”

Michael Parkes, Faune, oil on wooden panel, 130x100cm.

Stephen Howes has been representing artists of solid international reputation for many years. It was in his late teens that Stephen first became ‘hooked’ on great works of art. “The first painting I bought was by the English artist, Don Clarke, and it all started from there,” he says. “Today I still represent Clarke and still get the same joy from his work. At the time, I had no intention of making my hobby a fulltime career, it didn’t occur to me at all. It was a pass time and I simply bought the art I liked, the pieces that I could afford, and the ones that I thought would suit my home.” Edvard Munch’s iconic painting, ‘The Scream’, is expected to fetch at least $80m when it goes under the hammer at Sotheby’s in New York on 2nd May. It is, undoubtedly, one of the most famous – and disturbing – works in the history of modern art, but in-the-know dealers say you don’t need to own a globally acclaimed masterpiece to make a significant amount of money from art. “There is big money in the market and nowadays it’s not just the Picassos, Da Vincis and Warhols which are reaching unprecedented figures,” explained Stephen. “The demand for great pieces by less well known artists is strong, and growing all the time, as investors are keen to discover The Next Big Name in order to make serious money.”

66

Marco Bombach, Jungle Fruit Store, acrylic on canvas, 130x162cm.

To stress his point, the art dealer confirms that he has just sold a painting by the recently deceased, Birmingham-born painter, Don Clarke, to a Spanish buyer for more than five times what he paid for it. Don Clarke, Camisa de fuego, oil on canvas,100x80cm.

This soaring demand, says Mr Howes, is being driven by those who are turning their backs on the more traditional forms of investment, such as blue-chip stocks and commodities. He explains: “Original art, which always rises in value due to its rarity, is now widely viewed by investors as a safe haven in these economically turbulent times. Buying art used to be seen as ‘an alternative’ investment option, but now its very much part of the mainstream. Savvy investors recognise that original art prices are increasing between 30 and 35 per cent each year – meaning it is outperforming almost every other form of investment, including gold.”

Stephen Howes insists that by following a few tips, “anyone can make a decent profit” from art. He says: “For the best investment opportunities, you need to do your homework and research key trends and up and coming artists. Similarly, you must keep an eye on the market and be prepared to sell when it is favourable to do so – don’t hang on to it unless you’re sentimentally attached to it. Also, always buy from a reputable, experienced dealer and preferably from someone who knows the artists they’re representing personally for the best deal. In addition, I think it’s a great idea to start a collection based around one theme, artist or movement so you develop your own expertise in one area, making future purchases easier and, most likely, more profitable.”

TORQUE TALK

Our in-depth motoring review

74

TORQUE TALK

Motoring author, racing driver and photo-journalist Ian Kuah reports on the Porsche Cayman.

75

TORQUE TALK

I

f the new Porsche Cayman S PDK were a one trick pony, its 7 min 55 sec lap time on the Nurburgring would be impressive enough. But its competence on a racetrack is but one facet of the most well rounded sportscar that reasonable money can buy today. As with the first generation Cayman and 997 Carrera, so too with the latest cars, and against its Carrera big brother, the Cayman has only two obvious disadvantages. The first is the sheer power of its larger engine that allows the Carrera S PDK to shave 15 whole seconds off that benchmark Nurburgring lap time. The other is traction off the line and out of bends that no other car on the planet does better than the rear-engined 911. Where the gap in chassis settings between the Cayman and its ragtop Boxster sibling were not greatly different before, the much greater bodyshell stiffness of the latest Coupe is telling. Porsche provided us with a real challenge for our track test in the form

of the 2,915 mile-long Portimao Circuit in Portugal. Also known as Aut贸dromo Internacional do Algarve, Portimao is used for rounds of the A1 GP, GP2, Le Mans Series, FIA GT Championship and Formula 1 testing. Its fast curves and significant elevation change are reminiscent of Laguna Seca, sans Corkscrew, but unlike Seca, there is plenty of run-off here should you overcook things. On the tighter turns, it was immediately apparent that the new Cayman has significantly better front-end turn-in bite than before. There was a tendency for the original to push into understeer if you carried too much speed into a bend. Now, if you think you are going to miss the apex under braking into a tight bend, or even just misjudge the clipping point in a medium speed bend, turning the wheel a bit more points the nose towards your intended line. You really have to over-drive the car to find understeer, and then the Torque Vectoring feature activates to help the car turn in tighter.

The comfort setting of the optional PASM suspension is particularly impressive with the 20-inch wheels.

76

Once you are committed to a bend, the Cayman shows unerring stability, and holds its poise with steady throttle close to the limit. From there the chassis will take a gentle increase in power or slight lift-off with little attitude change. You have to be quite an animal to trigger the PSM stability management. With just 3.4 litres pushing such a grippy and finessed chassis, you have to try hard to induce power oversteer. The PSM system is so well calibrated that even in Sport Plus in the six-speed manual car I drove first, I had to try very hard to break the tail loose. In the end, I switched all the electronic safety systems off and then found that power oversteer is very progressive thanks to the limited-slip differential, which delivers 22% locking under acceleration and 27% on the overrun. This is an option whether or not you specify the Sport Chrono Package. A new feature for the manual is the throttle blip facility first seen on the manual Carrera 4, which helps drivers without heel and toe skills to match revs in downward shifts.

TORQUE TALK None of that is of concern to those who order the superfast PDK dual-clutch gearbox, which would be my choice because it is faster on road and track and also improves the fuel consumption and emissions. My test car had the proper aluminium steering wheel paddle shifters, but apparently these are still an option, with the silly rocker buttons as the standard gear selection system. As Joachim Meyer, Project Manager for Chassis Development, explained that “Both Boxster and Cayman benefit from a 40 percent greater torsional stiffness than before, but with 40,000 Nm/degree of torsional stiffness, the Cayman is nearly twice as stiff as the open Boxster. This also means that this uncompromised bodyshell is way stiffer than many major league supercars. The comfort setting of the optional PASM suspension is particularly impressive with the 20-inch wheels. Some of this is also due to the relocation of the damper pistons and improved lower fiction valving. The rest of it is down to the specific applications that Porsche has developed in conjunction with the tyre manufacturers.

77

TORQUE TALK

...the new Cayman benefits both visually and dynamically from its longer wheelbase In this case, the greater air volume and wider tracks...

and specially designed sidewalls in the 20-inch rubber means that they can run lower pressures than you would expect, while giving up nothing in turn-in response and stability. Steffen Koenig, one of the body structure engineers explained that even though the shell is so much stiffer, the use of high strength steels in varying thicknesses and more aluminium has enabled the larger and stronger body-in-white to show a 24kg weight saving at 236kg. The final saving in kerb weight terms is between 20 and 30kg depending on the choice of manual or PDK gearbox. The lightest Cayman is the base 2.7 manual, which weighs 1,310kg, while the 3.4 litre Cayman S PDK tips the scales at 1,350kg.

78

Front/rear weight distribution is 44/56 percent and the drag coefficient is 0.3 for both the basic Cayman on 18-inch wheels and the S on 19s. If you are wondering why the Cd of the S, with its larger wheels is still the same, the answer is that the 10mm lower ride height of its sports suspension compensates aerodynamically for the slight increase in tyre width. As with the Carrera and Boxster, the new Cayman benefits both visually and dynamically from its longer wheelbase and wider tracks, the latter achieved with a combination of a wider bodyshell and lower front suspension arms shared with the 991 Carrera. As with the latest Boxster, the Cayman (981 C7) has a 60mm longer wheelbase,

TORQUE TALK

and front and rear tracks widened over the old car by up to 40mm and 12mm respectively on the S models. The 4mm extra front track and 10mm extra rear track width on these S models is achieved with different wheel offsets. Overall height is 10mm lower. These new dimensions change the Cayman’s proportions even though the car retains a similar look to its predecessor. The body is now 32mm longer with a 27mm shorter front overhang, while the more steeply raked front windscreen sits 100mm further forward. Overall height has also been reduced by 13mm and its centre of gravity is 6mm lower. In pure aesthetic terms, the new Cayman looks longer and has a better stance on the road, while its extra roof height aft of the seats gives it more luggage space should you choose to pile your belongings on top of the removable parcel shelf.

The Sport Chrono Package includes Dynamic Transmission Mounts that keep the engine and gearbox stiffly aligned with the chassis under load, reducing the tendency of the rear end to ‘walk about’ and affect the handling. The side air intake ducts on the original Cayman were asymmetrical, with the left-hand-side one functional and the right-hand-side shuttered. On the new car, both are functional and duct ram air to the engine intake as well as helping to cool the engine compartment. As before, the Cayman benefits from a small power boost over the equivalent Boxster. For the entry-level 2.7, this means 275hp and 214 lb ft of torque, while the 3.4 litre Cayman S produces 325hp at a screaming 7,400rpm and 273 lb ft of torque between 4,500 and 5,800rpm. 0-62mph (100km/h) is a rapid 4.9 sec for the S, with a 175mph top speed.

Like all manufacturers, Porsche uses more than one tyre supplier, and as we know from past experience, not all tyres are born equal. I was more than curious to know how this plays out on the latest Cayman, and got a straight answer from Joachim Meyer. “We use Dunlop and Pirelli on the 18s, Pirelli and Goodyear on the 19s and Bridgestone and Pirelli on the 20s. On the 19s and 20s, the Pirelli PZero is definitely our tyre of choice for overall comfort and performance,” he said. As always, Porsche uses Brembo brakes designed and made to their extremely high specifications. The Cayman S uses 330 x 28mm front vented discs, while the 2.7 has 315 x 28mm front vented discs. The revised alloy brake calipers are stiffer than before for less distortion and more even pad pressure on the discs. Their better venting also directs more cooling air to the brake pads. As before, the powerful, light and costly PCCB ceramic brakes are an option on all models.

79

TORQUE TALK The new interior takes up the Carrera GT inspired centre console first seen on the 991 Carrera and then the Boxster. It is modern, elegant and perfectly aligned with the efficient nature of the latest generation of Porsche cars. Finish is everything you would expect from a car of this calibre, and is very good in both its broad architecture as well as in fine detail. As a practical car for weekend away, the Cayman scores heavily over other mid-engined sportscars in having a 150 litre boot in front, and as much as 275 litres of luggage room in the back if you fill the boot and use the parcel shelf area up to the roof. Couched in another way, the 425 litres of total load space is a third the volume of a medium station wagon with its seats folded flat, and pretty substantial for a car of this type.

80

“The new Cayman is noticeably more stable in long fast bends... Turn-in is more precise, the front-end grip is much better and ride comfort is in a different league.” If you plan to spend a lot of time in your Cayman, I would strongly recommend the Burmester sound system. As an audiophile, I have no reservations in saying that this is far and away the best line fit car audio system I have ever heard.

“The new Cayman is noticeably more stable in long fast bends,” he continued. “This is a combination of the longer wheelbase, wider tracks and better aerodynamics. Turn-in is more precise, the front-end grip is much better and ride comfort is in a different league.”

As for its market positioning, if you are not a diehard 911 fanatic, the Cayman’s strengths as a drivers’ car with 100% Porsche DNA pretty much speak for themselves.

Backing up what Joachim Meyer had told me the day before regarding tyre makes, Walter explained that the Pirellis worked best of all the test tyres on the 20-inch wheels, but that Michelin and Bridgestone were fast closing the gap. On the 19-inch wheels, the Bridgestone was ahead of the pack.

The 12-speaker, 821 watt Burmester audio system that caps off the range of in-car entertainment options is without doubt the best line-fit car audio system on sale today. With 103 dB/Watt efficiency, and weighing just 6.5 kg all in, it delivers music with a transparency and foot tapping emotional quality missing from most of its would-be rivals.

A two times World Rally Champion, Walter Rohrl, has been the senior test driver for Porsche since the 1990s, so it is always interesting to get his word on how a new model has evolved and ticks the boxes for him.

For the Cayman, the Burmester engineers use the same hardware as the Carrera system with software recalibration for the different acoustic characteristics of the Cayman’s cabin. I also had the chance to test the cheaper Bose system in another Cayman, and it sounded flat and muddy by comparison.

“After the Boxster with the new longer wheelbase, the even stiffer new Cayman was a fairly easy car for me to test as it drove exactly like I expected,” he said. “Its cornering and stability are even better than the Boxster, and the car is a big step forward compared to the original.”

On the issue of grip, I was curious if Walter would choose the 20-inch wheel option for himself. “The big wheels definitely look better, they have a bit more grip and are also progressive on the limit,” he replied. “Their advantage on a lap of the ‘Ring is about two, maximum three seconds. However, they have no added benefit on public road apart from their looks, so on balance I would go with the 19-inch wheels as the best all-round option for daily use.”

T

he Sea Grill at Puente Romano has had the make over of make overs. The décor is simply out of this world making it one of the most stylish venues on the Coast. We were dining with some very experienced industry insiders and their opinion was unanimous, this beachside restaurant has a visual wow factor rarely seen elsewhere in the area. We sipped our ice cold glasses of rose on the newly designed terrace which is now an homage to chic minimalism and when we moved into the huge interior white pagoda with illuminated bar, we were seriously impressed. Designed by the hugely successful British designer Andrew Martin, it is clear that no expense has been spared. The concept here seems to be the fusion of the hotel´s old school values of excellent service and attention, which is where its many years of experience come to play, with innovation and originality. The addition of an immaculate show kitchen with tandoor oven and charcoal grill was a welcome surprise and offers a combination of fresh seafood with Indian and Asian twists, rarely seen at such a high standard under one roof.

82

Executive chef Thomas Stork has already been awarded Best Chef in Andalucia at the Andalucian Gastronomy Awards 2013 and his inventive reputation is perfectly showcased at this venue. Guests can enjoy a more informal lunchtime menu with bespoke salads prepared on the spot as well as a gourmet pool bar selection of burgers, sandwiches and seafood or can enjoy the nighttime selection of international cuisine. We were extremely well looked after by the maître d, sommelier and team of attentive waiting staff and sampled a selection of their best dishes with accompanying wines. To begin we tried a herb salad with prawn toast which was the starting block of the many Eurasian dishes we were about to sample. Next was a beautiful appetizer of tandoori chicken wing lollipops, delicately spiced but with the earthy touch of the tandoor oven. We then sampled some vine wrapped parcels of deliciously grilled brie, which was a fantastic combination of crisp green leaves with the melted softness of the smooth cheese. The main event was a Tandoori grilled gilthead bream with garam masala. This was visually impressive as it was brought to us whole and de-boned by the staff at our table. One of the

COSTA CUISINE

Coast’s most popular and highly-prized white fish was taken to another level by the deeply aromatic covering of the Indian paste. The dish was accompanied by some broccoli with yoghurt and ginger, also cooked in the tandoor, and was again a perfectly blended example of healthy Mediterranean cooking with a twist.

To finish, we were presented with a sugar-rush explosion of mini donuts and dipping sauces, to bring out the child in all of us. A fun and comforting way to finish this otherwise highly sophisticated and well thought-out meal. Sea Grill Boulevar PrĂncipe Alfonso von Hohenlohe, Tel. 952 82 09 00 puenteromano.com

Sense Sensations UMAMI BAR, RESTAURANT & GRILL Text by Nicola McGeorge Photos by Laura Facio Lince

A

t Umami, San Pedro’s latest trendy eatery, everyday ingredients are spruced up and transformed into spectacular, imaginative dishes. Factor in relaxed, clued-up staff, it’s no wonder Umami is such a local hit. Located in the heart of town, this Scandinavian take on Nobu offers an eclectic range of Asian-influenced dishes, unexpected fusions of classic French and Japanese cuisine and a selection of Mediterranean inspired delights. This pick-and-mix style could easily go horribly wrong, but the cooking is brilliantly executed and the clever combinations really work.

84

A major player in the culinary arena, Swedish owner, Lee Varhos, cut his teeth at Passion Café in La Colonia before opening Umami. Known for his diverse taste, the restaurant decor reflects Lee’s strong personality and the mish mash of styles creates a visually stimulating aesthetic that brings city centre style to a small town.

and calls attention to itself without being overbearing. Framed inspirational quotes in contrasting colours add a visually playful effect, while the green geckos on the wall add to the overall vibe.

The restaurant is split into different areas: a modern terrace for those seeking alfresco dining, a trendy bar area ideal for a quick bite and a tipple or two and, of course, the main dining area. Here the use of purple is sexy and unexpected; this regal color accentuates the room

Upon arrival we were greeted by the ever charming Lee, who was attentive throughout our whole dining experience. It is easy to see why he has gained such a loyal following. After showing us to our table, Lee explained that many customers like to start with a few dishes

from their montaditos, pinchos and tapas menu, amongst which are French pâté of duck with cornichons, brie, pear, walnuts and lingon berries, beef in a red wine sauce or skågen prawns. However, Lee had selected sushi for our first dish to showcase the skills of his talented sushi chef. With a dedicated sushi bar menu, offering over 30 dishes you really are spoilt for choice. Our mixed sushi and sashimi plate consisted of such dainty bite-sized confections it was almost a shame to sink our teeth into them. The

COSTA CUISINE

perfectly balanced flavours meant that additional soy sauce was not needed, a first for me. This was followed by prawns in ginger tempura, beautifully balanced by the seaweed salad and soba noodles. The numerous different elements in this delicate dish are to be truly savoured. Thanks to Lee’s vast knowledge this is also the perfect restaurant for wine lovers, since he is more than happy to suggest wine pairings for each course. Well, I did tell you he was the perfect host. Main courses, though modestly proportioned, were equally thoughtful:

the Moroccan spring roll with chicken, almonds and salad had depth of flavour and a potent kick, while the New Zealand lamb chops paired with potato Dauphinois were full of taste, melting in texture and particularly moreish. I highly recommend that you save room for the desserts. The chilled, smooth and creamy key lime pie was the dessert equivalent of a swimming pool - so refreshing you can’t help but dive in. The chocolate, hazelnut, rum and oreo terrine with white chocolate glaze really surprised, with its light texture and deep cocoa flavours, while the colourful and beautifully coherent plateful of Umami Tiramisu made with passion fruit and

white chocolate proved a triumphant end to our meal. The restaurant’s name, Umami, is one of the five basic tastes of sweet, sour, salty, and bitter and our culinary journey definitely took us through a world of flavours. Umami is everything you’d hope for from a Lee Varhos establishment; seize the first opportunity to sample a sublime experience at an unusually reasonable price. UMAMI Bar, Restaurant & Grill Av. Mother’s Kitchen CHOWKA

T

Text by Heather Sadtler Photos by Laura Facio Lince

aking an extremely well known restaurant site, and injecting new life and colour into it is never going to be an easy task. Chowka, however, lives up to its predecessor the Polo House and then some. The formerly lavish interior has now been re-vamped to produce a slick and fresh Indian and Andalucian combination that reflects the menu and ideology behind this fantastic new restaurant.

Head Chef Ravi Deulkar has done something special here, fusing local Spanish traditions of tapas and light bites with beautifully traditional Indian cooking. Chowka means “mother´s kitchen” and the menu steers away from such obvious choices as chicken tikki masala, and concentrates instead on local seasonal ingredients and Coastal seafood, to create a social dining experience. We sampled a selection of dishes from the stunning tapas menu; an ideal way to dip into this cuisine as lightly or extensively as you might wish. Although the restaurant was packed on a Wednesday evening, the chef served us all his dishes personally and talked us through each option.

86

We started with an almond fig tikki cake that used a contrast of textures to produce a really interesting but simple parcel. Delicate almond flakes were used to surround some soft and aromatic paneer with some ginger and coriander to bring out the fresh sweetness of the dish.

COSTA CUISINE

This was followed by a small piece of rosada with a lethally effective use of wholegrain mustard and black pepper chutney as a tapenade to cover the fish. The best things come in small packages and this choice packed a winning punch; the highlight of the meal for me, and something I will definitely be re-visiting. We then heartily tucked into the lamb chop, which once again used a simple but perfectly balanced combination of fresh herbs and spices to delicately flavor this usually strong-tasting meat. The combination of ginger, shallot and mustard oil showcased the restaurant’s focus on experiencing as many complementary flavours as possible.

lovingly prepared, the staff courteous and attentive and the chef has real vision that is exactly what this Coast has been waiting for. Chowka Bulevard Principe Alfonso Von Hohenlohe (Golden Mile) T. 952 900 380 chowka-marbella.com

Next was some peanut chilli tiger prawns that had been cooked in the tandoor and had that smokey subtle depth in flavour that the traditional Indian oven brings. The addition of fresh lime and coriander harmonised with the savoury peanut perfectly and seemed to me to be the ideal Indian cousin of the Andalucian perennial prawn Pil pil.

the flavours sampled. The chef had chosen for us an amazing Tandoorglazed pineapple with coconut ice cream. The pineapple was warm and toasted and accompanied the refreshing ice cream seamlessly.

An Indian dessert should always be a palate cleanser in itself to wash away the strength and combination of all

This restaurant has developed a really exciting new concept, and deserves success. The food is consistent and

The Spring Games is an intense day of competition which brings together 24 International participants to compete

from sun rise to sun set in eight sports including snow skiing, karting, golf, polo, shooting, archery, waterskiing and padel tennis. The Marbella Club has been central to the Spring Games since the founder of the hotel came up with the idea in the 1960s. His nephew Pablo Hohenlohe brought his uncle’s concept back to life four years ago and so it was only fitting that the games begin and finish at the hotel. THE TIKITANO GETS PERFECT TEN! HELPING A GOOD CAUSE

TikiTano Restaurant celebrated its tenth annivesary in April in considerablle style. One of the most beautiful and popular restaurants on the coast, invited guests enjoyed a champagne and canapes reception in the fabulous gardens on arrival. There was a tempting choice of tastes to enjoy, including succulent hams, artisan cheese, local produced olive oil as well as the BBQ, which was popular througout the afternoon and into the evening. TikiTano’s helpful and attentive staff also moved amongst the 400 guests with creative canapes and tapas from the kitchen. As the sun set over the Mediterranean, and the guests enjoyed fabulous views across to Gibraltar and Morocco. The entertainment moved up a gear with live performances from TikiTano regulars, Chispa, an Abba Tribute band and The Rat Pack Live, the dancing and partying continued into the early hours.
