ZAHA HADID
Queen of the Curve
Since
her student days in London at the Architectural Association School of Architecture, she had been intensely preoccupied with changing our general notions of space - not only in a physical sense, but also socially and culturally. Hadid’s projects are characterized by their dynamic formal qualities of sinuously, curving shapes, or crystallized strata. Some call this a kind of new Baroque, because it is a sensuous, more vibrant and engaging type of architecture.
UTOPIA - 8
THE IRAQI-BRITISH ARCHITECT WHO DIED IN MARCH 2016 AT THE AGE OF 65 ACCOMPLISHED THE CREATION OF AN ASTONISHING BODY OF WORK DURING HER LIFE. What is more she claimed her success in a profession that remains dominated by men. Along the way, Queen Elizabeth II made her a Dame. Fluid, feminine lines were the signature of her work, making almost any structure recognisable as ‘a Hadid’, even to those with only a passing acquaintance with architecture.
Heydar Aliyev cultural center, Baku (2012) All swooping curves and flowing space, this 619,000-square-foot complex in the capital of Azerbaijan won the London Design Museum award in 2014; one judge called it “as pure and sexy as Marilyn’s full-blown skirt”. The softly folded roof shelters a museum, an auditorium and a multi-purpose hall.
Hadid’s projects during the late 1970s and 1980s showed her profound understanding of early 20th century avant-garde artists and architects. She attempted to redevelop and make relevant again the formal investigations of Russian Constructivism and Italian Futurism and you could say that her projects expressed utopian ideals. Along with her strong conceptual and historical awareness, nature’s forms and shapes appear as a recurrent source of inspiration for Zaha Hadid’s architecture. It includes attention to physical contexts and landscapes, whether resulting in layered structures or powerful moving lines, but also exploring possible interfaces between patterns and construction. The scope and originality of her
work brought her international recognition and in 2004 Zaha Hadid won the prestigious Pritzker Prize and she won the Stirling Prize in 2010 and 2011. Her work lives on through her London studio Zaha Hadid Architects who continue to create landmarks projects for all types of functional programs. Their buildings are never bland or mundane; they are always assertive statements of a particular view - that the world may indeed look different. Their efforts have resulted in a staggering almost one thousand projects throughout the globe, in every scale, from urban design schemes to objects and furniture design.

Vitra fire station, Weil am Rhein (1994) This was Hadid’s first completed project. A complex construction of tilted and clashing planes that looks very different from her later, organic designs. Its daring geometries proved too much for the firemen, who moved out, leaving the building to become an events space.
Hungerburgbahn, Innsbruck (2007)
Phaeno science centre, Wolfsburg (2005) The Phaeno science centre “condenses a lot of the things that have been in my work for a long, long time”, Hadid remarked. Raised on fat concrete cones, it is a cathedral of jagged angles, looming curves, fractured planes and daring protrusions.
UTOPIA - 10
It is a hybrid funicular railway in an alpine setting and Zaha Hadid designed each of the four stations on the line. The Hungerburg station is a particularly glorious example of her work and its mountainside location is the perfect site for a cloud-like work of architecture. It is both ephemeral and solid, rather like the mountain and the snow. Its dynamic, curving form and its glossy white surface are a gift to the world of architecture.
Bridge Pavilion, Zaragoza (2008) A work that seems to compete with that of Calatrava in Valencia, Hadid’s first completed bridge throws 280 metres of fibre-glass reinforced concrete across the river Ebro. It was constructed to link the La Almozara neighborhood of the city to the exhibition site of the 2008 Zaragoza Expo and is part pedestrian walkway and part exhibition area.
Guangzhou opera house, Guangzhou (2010) Hadid described this building as “Like pebbles in a stream smoothed by erosion,” and it blends in perfectly with its riverside setting. Regarded as one of the most alluring opera houses ever built, it boasted a folded, flowing glass structure that let light flood in. However, a year after the building opened, cladding panels were already falling off.
Sheikh Zayed Bridge, Abu Dhabi (2010) It would have been surprising if there was no Hadid architecture in the Emirates as her style has great empathy with the landscape of the region. This 842-metre bridge, with its swooping arches and curves intended to emulate the rippling of sand dunes, seems to float on the horizon from a distance. It is perhaps best seen at night, when coloured lighting floods its spine.
UTOPIA - 11
Riverside museum, Glasgow (2011) This was Hadid’s first major building in Britain, it has been dubbed the “Glasgow Guggenheim” and it won the 2013 European Museum of the Year award. Beneath a stunning zinc-clad zigzag roof, a 36m-high glazed frontage overlooks the river Clyde. The steel-framed structure, built on the site of an old shipyard, houses a column-free, 7,000 square metre exhibition space.
London aquatics centre, Stratford (2012) The “most jaw-dropping municipal swimming pool in the world,” the Guardian said at the time. Originally built for the 2012 Olympics at a cost of £269m, it houses two 50-metre pools and seats for 2,500 spectators. Its distinctive roof that curves like a wave rests on just three concrete supports, whilst enormous windows let the light flood in.
Galaxy Soho, Beijing (2012) Possibly the most space-age-looking of all Hadid’s works, this spooling creation comprises four domed structures linked by an exciting combination of bridges and platforms flowing around what could be described as a central canyon. Like smoothed off layered pancakes, the 18-storey retail, office and entertainment mega-centre boasts interior courts intended to reflect traditional Chinese architecture.

THE 85 M² MODERN APARTMENT LOCATED IN KYIV, UKRAINE IS OWNED BY A YOUNG COSMOPOLITAN COUPLE THAT ALREADY HAS ENJOYED LIVING IN BIG CITIES SUCH AS NEW YORK AND MOSCOW. HOWEVER, BOTH OF THEM WERE BORN IN KYIV AND DECIDED TO BUY THEIR FIRST COMMON APARTMENT AT THEIR HOMETOWN. The choice of the interior style for designer Yana Molodykh was not difficult; she opted for an art-deco style combined with the light of the American style equally relevant in the big cities of the world. The apartment resembles the interior of Carrie Bradshaw and Big’s apartment, the iconic couple of the famous series “Sex and the City”.

YANA MOLODYKH CREATES EXCLUSIVE DESIGN FOR HOMES, AS WELL AS INTERIORS FOR THE COMMERCIAL USE SUCH AS RESTAURANTS, OFFICES AND BOUTIQUE HOTELS. Yana graduated from the “Detail Studio School” in Moscow, one of the best European educational centers for the interior design, which had presented a number of world famous decorators. Bringing a feeling of beauty and admiration to the everyday life of her customers, she is continuing to learn from nature, travels and art. Yana is attending to the best professional exhibitions, such as Maison et Objet Paris and iSaloni Milan. Being in love with our work is always the key to achieve better results. Are you in love with your job? What do you love the most about being an interior designer? Of course, I am in love with my work and always invest a part of my soul, otherwise it is impossible to get a decent result: beautiful interior and happy customers. How important is a good chemistry between you and your clients to achieve better results? Without a mutual understanding between the client and the designer it is not possible to create a space with a beautiful story. The harmonious interior – is always a result of collaboration between designer and the customer, they must be “on the same wave”, understand each other totally. It is always a partnership based on respect and trust. How would you describe your style? Do you have any personal “signature”? I am working in different styles and areas - everything depends on client’s wishes and my vision. But I guess that my “signature” is always recognizable on my projects by sophisticated and “airy” interiors, delicate work with colors, textiles and details. Choosing the right piece for a design set might seem an easy task. However, it takes a lot of time and attention to find the perfect match. Which advices you have for those who do not know how to start a challenge like this? With simple tools such as collage on my smartphone I can immediately see whether this sofa or table is “living” in the interior or not. I also advise trust your intuition - the goods which have been selected intuitively, often perfectly complete existing ones in the interior. You should not be afraid to mix things and put some color into your interior. Refer to the process of interior transformation as to a game, and you’ll see how beautiful the result can be. UTOPIA - 26

AT THE END OF JANUARY 2017, MARBELLA AND MIAMI FLA BECAME SISTER CITIES. REPRESENTATIVES FROM MARBELLA’S CITY HALL AND MIAMI OFFICIALS SIGNED THE DOCUMENT TO TWIN THE TWO CITIES, WHICH SHARE SO MUCH IN COMMON: YEAR ROUND SUNSHINE, STUNNING BEACHES AND A VIBRANT AND GLAMOROUS COSMOPOLITAN CULTURE. PLUS, BOTH MARBELLA AND MIAMI ARE EXTREMELY POPULAR TOURISM DESTINATIONS FOR EUROPEANS AND PEOPLE FROM ALL PARTS OF THE GLOBE. Javier Porcuna, the councilor responsible for Marbella Tourism, announced the momentous event at Fitur, the international fair held in Madrid from 18-22 January. He said “Miami opens a new door for us to capitalise on a market of people with a high economic capacity and for whom transatlantic travel is not an obstacle.” Part of strategy to attract Miami’s wealthiest residents includes identifying the attractions the two cities have in common, such as golf, beaches, glamour and great weather. However, the councilor also stressed that increasing tourism was not the only goal, there is also a commercial purpose, which the Town hall has been working on since 2016. Sr. Porcuna explained: “We have already been in contact with a number of local Marbella entrepreneurs so that we can organise a commercial mission. Some of them visited Miami last year along with a Town Hall representative. Once everything is ready, there will be an official visit.” Marbella believes that this collaboration will make it a ‘must visit’ destination for wealthy tourists from the Miami area who start a European visit in London, Paris or Madrid. The twinning will hopefully now also add Marbella to their travel itinerary, thanks to the promotion of Marbella to Miami residents.
THE twin
city
CONCEPT
The idea of ‘twinning’ towns or creating ‘sister cities’ dates back to 1947 and the intention was to encourage a form of social agreement between towns or cities in geographically different regions to promote cultural and commercial ties. The idea emerged post-WWII as a way of fostering friendship and understanding between different cultures and between former enemies as an act of peace and reconciliation. It was also intended to increase trade and tourism. And, in the case of Marbella and Miami, they have a lot to offer each other. UTOPIA - 28
Marbella believes that this collaboration will make it a ‘must visit’ destination for wealthy tourists from the Miami area who start a European visit in London, Paris or Madrid.
THE Magic CITY Miami’s nickname is ‘The Magic City’ and if you’re wondering how it got this name, it’s due to its rapid growth. Between 1896 and 2006, the city grew from 1,000 residents to 5.5 million of them. According to anecdotal reports, Miami’s winter visitors, another factor it shares with Marbella, remarked that the “city grew so much from one year to the next that it was like magic.” Miami is primarily famous for being a popular vacation destination thanks to its many beautiful beaches, including the legendary South Beach, and a thriving nightlife. The city has been described by Time magazine as “The Capital of Latin America,” and its Little Havana reflects its position as the place that Cubans opposing the late Fidel Castro escaped to. Visit the cafes and cigar shops in Calle Ocho and you’ll feel as though you have been swept across to the Caribbean island. It has the best Cuban food and there’s a Little Haiti as well, which fosters artists and the culture of this island that has endured so much tragedy. UTOPIA - 29
THE FLORIDA KEYS & EVERGLADES Miami is also a gateway to one of the America’s most beautiful areas of natural beauty – The Florida Keys. There are too many to list, but any Humphrey Bogart fan will undoubtedly have heard of Key Largo, which is in the Upper Keys and not too far from Miami itself. Islamorada with its coconut palms is also worth visiting, but a Key West sunset is a spectacle that must be seen at least once in a lifetime. The Florida Everglades is another natural environment worth a visit, if only to see those alligators.
MIAMI AND Art However, it is also becoming known for trade, commerce, entertainment, pop culture and the arts. The Art Basel Fair is one of the world’s biggest events in the art world, and Miami has made great efforts to grow its museums and its small at galleries. One reason why this has worked so well for Miami is that a significant number of the world’s biggest art collectors have second or third homes in Miami. Indeed, one of Marbella’s most prominent galleries –Timeless Gallery–has also opened its latest venue in Miami, in what has become known as the Art District. Visitors from Miami to Marbella will feel right at home in many ways, and not just because Spanish and English are the languages most heard in both places. But, we’re sure they’ll appreciate the differences as well; the mountains, the centuries old culture and the extraordinary heritage sites, such as The Alhambra, that are all within easy travelling distance of Marbella. This promises to be a very exciting twinning and we wish Marbella Town Hall the very best with its endeavours to promote the love between Marbella and The Magic City.

The Influential Architecture of
Islamic Spain
UTOPIA - 38
SEVEN CENTURIES OF MUSLIM PRESENCE IN SPAIN (711-1492) LEFT THE COUNTRY, AND ESPECIALLY ANDALUCIA WITH A DISTINCT CULTURAL LEGACY THAT IS PARTICULARLY VISIBLE IN ITS ARCHITECTURE. Furthermore, elements of the Moors’ distinctive buildings, particularly the mosques, spread throughout Christian Europe leaving an indelible mark on its architectural heritage and one of its most famous cathedrals – St. Paul’s Cathedral in London.
The Great Mosque of Córdoba The most important building in Islamic Spain and other centers of Muslim civilization is the mosque, known in Arabic as the masjid. Mosques are almost completely empty inside, without seats or altars. The empty space is a surface for decoration and expression of form. All mosques are modeled upon the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinat al Nabi- a city near Makkah/Mecca in Saudi Arabia. It was a simple rectangular building with a mihrab, or prayer niche, to show the direction to face during worship. It had columns made of date palm trunks, and a thatched roof held up by palm trunks. Virtually all other mosques have these same features: a prayer hall, a mihrab, a minaret and a tower the muezzin climbs to project his voice in the call to prayer. Beyond these common characteristics, however, mosques are as varied as the lands and the Muslims living around the world. The Great Mosque of Córdoba was designed under Abdurrahman I. It began construction in 787 CE and was expanded under later rulers. The double horseshoe-shaped arches added height and drama to the prayer space, especially with their red-and-white striped decoration on top of simple columns. The building was innovative in this respect and the use of colour in architecture was a design element that traveled widely. In 961 CE, a special section of the mosque added “poly-lobed” arches with carved decoration, meaning that the arch was scalloped. The ribbed dome of the mosque gave it strength, but also formed a star pattern that highlights the mosaic designs in the centre and between the ribs. The architectural features in the Córdoba mosque spread to other forms of architecture and became visual symbols of Al-Andalus. The ribbed vault design became a familiar feature in Gothic cathedrals of northern Europe.

The Minaret The minaret is another Islamic form that found many applications in other places, from bell towers in Europe to skyscrapers in the 20th century. Minarets can be very solid, like those built using adobe brick, which have a narrow pyramid shape, or they can be very thin like Ottoman period minarets. In Spain and Morocco, brick towers with a square footprint graced the rectangular mosque layout. The minaret rose to a great height and featured geometric patterns in brick, and symmetrical openings near the slender top. The minaret form was admired and widely adopted by Western architects, and one of the great examples of its use is in a very Christian place of worship.
St. Paul’s Cathedral – The Islamic Influence It might not seem apparent at first, but Christopher Wren’s masterpiece – St. Paul’s Cathedral in London – owes much to his admiration for Islamic architecture and he researched the construction of Ottoman and Moorish mosques as part of his preparation. He saw that what the West called ‘Gothic’ owed much to the work of Muslim architects and devised his own theory about it called “The Saracenic Theory.” He put forward his theory thus: “This we now call the Gothic manner of architecture (so the Italians called what was not after the Roman style), though the Goths were rather destroyers than builders: I think it should with more reason be called the Saracen style; for those people (the Goths) wanted neither arts nor learning; and after we in the West had lost both, we borrowed again from them, out of their Arabic books, what they with great diligence had translated from the Greeks.” Wren went on to add, in commenting on what was being called ‘Modern Gothic’: “From all the marks of the new architecture it can only be attributed to the Moors; or what is the same thing, to the Arabian or Saracens; who have expressed in their architecture the same taste as in their poetry; both the one and the other falsely delicate, crowded with superfluous ornaments, and often very unnatural; the imagination is highly worked up in both; but it is an extravagant imagination; and it has rendered the edifices of the Arabians (we may include the other Orientals) as extraordinary as their thoughts. If any one doubts of this assertion, let us appeal to any one who has seen the mosques and palaces of Fez, or some of the cathedrals in Spain, built by the Moors.” Next time you visit St. Paul’s in London look at the domed aisles constructed in Islamic fashion, plus Wren’s use of dome and minaret to give the cathedral its distinctive outline that has contributed so much to the London skyline. Elsewhere, in the city’s churches designed by Wren, such as St. Mary-le-Bow you will also see a minaret as a prominent feature. Indeed, the use of dome and tower is also widely seen in Italian church architecture of the late Renaissance and San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice is a fine example of the use of dome and minaret.

Islamic Spain gave the peninsula an extraordinary cultural heritage, from language and farming techniques to artisan crafts and cuisine. The Moorish rulers may have left in 1492, but their influence lives on, and as we’ve discovered, it travelled far and wide, inspiring architects who marvelled at the new building and design techniques they added to those of the West.
“From all the marks of the new architecture it can only be attributed to the Moors,... who have expressed in their architecture the same taste as in their poetry; both the one and the other falsely delicate, crowded with superfluous ornaments, and often very unnatural; the imagination is highly worked up in both; but it is an extravagant imagination...

THE MAN WHO MADE
La Virginia
LA VIRGINIA IN MARBELLA IS ONE OF THE TOWN’S MOST DISTINGUISHED AND DISTINCTIVE DEVELOPMENTS. ITS NARROW COBBLED LANES, ITS TINY CHURCH AND ITS MEWS-STYLE FEEL CREATE A BOHEMIAN VIBE THAT IS ECHOED IN ITS RESIDENTS’ INTERIOR DÉCOR AND APPROACH TO LIFE. EVEN IF IT ISN’T ENTIRELY INHABITED BY ARTISTS, IT CERTAINLY HAS THE FEEL OF AN ARTISTS’ COLONY THANKS TO DONALD GRAY, THE ARCHITECT WHO DESIGNED IT. Donald Gray (born 1935) is an Australian who is now a Spaniard. He arrived on these shores in the 1961 and made his way from the coast to the Alpujarra. As Spanish newspaper El Mundo reported: “He arrived in Torremolinos, gave English classes and then frequented the house of Gerald Brenan in Churriana.” Brenan is the famous Anglo-Irish writer and Hispanist who is best known for “The Spanish Labyrinth” a work about the Spanish Civil War and “South from Granada: Seven Years in an Andalusian Village.” He died in Alhaurin el Grande in 1987 and was a close friend of Donald Gray’s throughout his time in Spain. Winning the Rafael Manzano Award 2015
Gray has recently been brought to public attention due to receiving the Rafael Manzano prize for Architecture in 2015 awarded by the Richard H. Dreihaus Foundation. Another result of this award is that it has shone a spotlight on Gray’s work in Andalucia, particularly two of his urbanisations –La Virginia and Las Lomas del Marbella Club—considered by some to be the most beautiful on the coast. Both date from the 60s and 70s, and have certainly stood the test of time. They are two examples of an architectural style based on the Andalucian ‘pueblo’ and experts agree that Gray’s attention to detail in both developments, especially the use of artisan crafts in wood, tiles and metals is exemplary. Gray went on to work on La Heredia after La Virginia and Las Lomas, but only completed the first phase. He was by this stage, firmly established in the Alpujarra region and focused his architectural work on small hotels there. Another of Donald Gray’s works is the La Tartana hotel in the urbanisation of San Nicolás, Gray’s first one ever, near La Herradura. Built between 1965 and 1966, this small hotel with its exterior covered with climbing plants was a great favourite with Brigitte Bardot. Other urbanisations designed by Gray in this period were Pueblo López between Fuengirola and Mijas. This development was created in response to the rise in tourism and it has been added to since then by a succession of architects who have all followed Gray’s original design
“Thanks to the award and Krier, both La Virginia and Las Lomas del Marbella Club will become better known as examples of urban architecture that show a deep respect for history and tradition.” Pueblo López
concept. You can also see Gray’s work in some of the houses in Los Naranjos in Nueva Andalucia and El Nuevo Pueblo Mijas.
Links to the New Urbanism
After receiving the award, Gray was invited back to La Virginia to make a documentary with Leon Krier, a well-known exponent of modern architecture and in particular the New Urbanism. Gray’s work is an antidote to the modern style that Krier doesn’t like, so the two have much in common, and as El Mundo says: “Thanks to the award and Krier, both La Virginia and Las Lomas del Marbella Club will become better known as examples of UTOPIA - 59
urban architecture that show a deep respect for history and tradition.” However, one developer said that Russian buyers, for example, don’t like Gray’s style or that of Melvin Villaroel at the Puente Romano.
Against the ‘modern’ grain Donald Gray represents an alternative to the current fashion for cubes, clean lines and massive windows. He summed up his view of modern architecture this: “There are two evils. There is the sect of modern architecture, represented by Frank Gehry, whose architects always try to do something different and then there are those that make houses that all look the same. Some create something so ugly that makes them famous and, on the other hand, there are those who have fallen into a kitsch style, which does not mean traditional, it’s more like Disneyland without the discipline of study. “ Of his time working on the La Virginia project, he has much more pleasant comments: “The terrain was fabulous, with so many huge carobs and those pods that taste like chocolate. It was easy to do that urbanization when there was so much beauty.” He and his friends clearly enjoyed themselves while working: “We set up a shop to buy salt, sugar and wine. And, in our case, we had a bottle of whiskey each with our name on it. It was very nice. We were like playboys killing ourselves with alcohol as fast as possible.”
Hotel Prado Toro, La Alpujarra
Donald Gray continues to bring the traditions of the Andalucian village to his work, particularly the Alpujarran style, despite as his website says the disdain shown towards it by even local architects who are taught that it is not ‘modern’. Gray’s response to this is: “This is in spite of it being decidedly superior in elegance and beauty to what is being done now as can be seen by having a look at the Costa del Sol.” Fighting words, but the beauty of Gray’s work is a perfect defense against those who take issue with him. donaldgray.es

The Burj Khalifa At 2,722ft/828m, the Burj Khalifa is for the moment the world’s tallest building. Construction started in 2004 and the building officially opened in 2010. It was named in honour of Abu Dhabi’s ruler, Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan after the UAE gave Dubai money to pay off its debts. The Burj Khalifa represents Dubai’s wish to diversify from being an oil-based economy to an international destination. Visitor numbers to Dubai and the Burj Khalifa, suggest they got it right.
More than 1,000 pieces of art adorns the interiors of Burj Khalifa, while the residential lobby of Burj Khalifa displays the work of Jaume Plensa, featuring 196 bronze and brass alloy cymbals representing the 196 countries of the world. Visitors in this lobby are able to hear a distinct timbre as the cymbals, plated with 18-carat gold, are struck by dripping water, intended to mimic the sound of water falling on leaves. It also houses the 304-room Armani hotel, swimming pools on the 43rd and 76th floors, and the floors through to 108 have 800 private residential apartments that sold out within eight hours of coming on the market, according to the developer. Corporate offices occupy most of the upper floors, except for a 122nd, 123rd and 124th floor where the At.mosphere restaurant, sky lobby and an indoor and outdoor observation deck is located respectively.
The Burj Khalifa represents Dubai’s wish to diversify from being an oil-based economy to an international destination.
The Burj Khalifa’s Architectural Inspiration Adrian Smith, the American architect who designed the Burj Khalifa based it on patterning systems embodied in Islamic architecture, particularly The Great Mosque of Samarra. The mosque, which is in Iraq, was built between 847 and 861CE. It’s a spiraling tower that is 53m high, nothing compared to what the desert kingdoms are building now. The art and architecture of the mosque were influential across the Islamic world; stucco carvings within the mosque in floral and geometric designs represent early Islamic decoration. Unfortunately, the mosque was destroyed in 1278CE, but its outer walls and minaret remain, although further damage has been done to them during the recent invasion of Iraq.
Height needs support The tower is composed of three elements arranged around a central core. As the tower rises from the flat desert base, setbacks occur at each element in a spiralling pattern—similar to the Mosque of Samarra-- decreasing the cross section of the tower as it reaches toward the sky. To support the unprecedented height of the building, the engineers developed a new structural system called the buttressed core, consisting of a hexagonal core reinforced by three buttresses that form the ‘Y’ shape, enabling the building to support itself laterally and keeps it from twisting. The Burj Khalifa’s spire is composed of more than 4,000 tonnes of structural steel. The central pinnacle pipe, which weighs 350 tonnes was constructed from inside the building and jacked to its full height of over 200m (660 ft) using a strand jack system. This mighty spire also houses communications equipment.

The Tower, Dubai In October 2016, Dubai ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum laid the foundation stone of The Tower, which promises to be “a notch” taller than Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, so we’re still not sure how far it will soar above the Khalifa’s 828 metres. The Tower, which will form the centrepiece of the 3.7 square mile (six square-kilometre) Dubai Creek redevelopment project, should be completed in time for the 2020 Dubai World Expo, according to Emaar properties, the company that was also behind the Khalifa.
The Tower’s Spanish Architect The architect responsible for The Tower is Santiago Calatrava, the Spanish architect who we’ve featured before in Utopia, and who is known for the City of Arts and Sciences complex in Valencia, Spain and New York City’s new World Trade Centre transportation hub which opened this year. The Tower’s main features include The Pinnacle Room, a slender, streamlined structure with a needlepoint-like tip, as well as several “garden” observation decks, decorated with trees and other greenery that will offer 360-degree views of Dubai. It will also have glass balconies that rotate outside the wall of the tower, as well as a luxury hotel and 18 to 20 floors of shops, restaurants and other tourist facilities.

The Kingdom Tower in Jeddah Whilst the Burj Khalifa still holds the title of the world’s tallest building, it is going to be eclipsed by The Kingdom Tower in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Like Dubai’s latest tower, The Kingdom Tower will be completed in 2020. Once the final, cloudpiercing needle on top of the building is completed in 2020, thus achieving the planned height of 3,280 ft/1,001m, the Jeddah tower can claim the record. The Kingdom Tower will house the world’s highest observatory and be a mixed-use building with a gross floor area of 245,000 square metres. This will include offices, a 200-room Four Seasons Hotel, 121 serviced apartments and 360 residential apartments. The tower has 200 floors and the graphic renders of the finished building show that it will have some dizzying outdoor terraces with views over the Red Sea coastline. Standing on one of these is probably not ideal for anyone with vertigo.
The architect Chicago based architetcs, Adrian Smith + Gordon+Gill Architecture are the firm behind the Kingdom Tower. Adrian Smith has already made a name for himself in the desert landscape with Burj Khalifa as well as the Jin Mao Tower in Shanghai and the Zifeng Tower in Nanjing, China. Smith has said that his design for the Kingdom Tower was inspired by the “folded fronds of young desert plant growth.” He explained: “The way the fronds sprout upward from the ground as a single form, then start separating from each other at the top, is an analogy of new growth fused with technology.” Each of the tower’s three sides features a series of notches that create pockets of shadow that shield areas of the building from the sun while providing outdoor terraces with views of Jeddah and the Red Sea.
An architecture of optimism It seems that this competition to build the world’s highest building on the sands of the desert is partly based on optimism about the future of the region, and on a desire to “set another challenge in the history of human architectures,” according to Sheikh Mohammed Al Maktoum, and he believes that the UAE deserves to lead the challenge. Tell that to Jeddah. You might find that they think different! UTOPIA - 65

REAL French DESIGN in Marbella
PARISIAN INTERIOR DESIGNER CHRISTELLE LITVINE TALKS TO UTOPIA ABOUT HER FRENCH HERITAGE, DESIGN TASTES IN THE SOUTH OF FRANCE AND HER STUDIO IN MARBELLA. Christelle Litvine is a French interior designer with a studio in Marbella, but she also collaborates with partners on projects in Paris and the chic Côte d’A zur towns of Cannes, Nice and Saint- Tropez. She is frequently featured in both the Air France Paisajes, Architectural Digest, Hola and Telva magazines and has a long-time relationship with Utopia. Her projects embrace both residential and commercial interiors in both France and Spain, and Christelle’s exterior landscaping designs are also in big demand from her many clients who live in Europe’s sunniest hot spots. In this issue, Christelle offered Utopia the opportunity to talk to her about her interior design background, her style philosophy and, of course, we wanted to know if there are any key differences in requests and requirements between clients living in Saint-Tropez and Marbella.

Tell us a bit about your background and training in interior design I was born in Paris and that’s where I grew up. It’s a wonderful city for design inspiration and it’s where I chose to stay and study. I attended an art college that specialised in Fine Art and Decoration. After I graduated, I actually started my working life as a freelance art director in advertising. Then I got into furniture design and eventually ended up working on interior designs for commercial spaces, most of them luxury retail brands. Paris was such a great starting point for me, because the city has been an inspiration for creative people for so long. Also, it occupies such an important place in the history of European art and it continues to have a strong cultural effervescence. What are the similarities between working on projects in France and projects in Marbella? Well, first, you can easily draw comparisons between Cannes, Monaco and Marbella, let’s say. They all symbolise a luxury, international lifestyle. They tend to attract people with similar backgrounds and many of them even have homes in more than one of these places - Monaco and Marbella for example – so it made sense to me to have partnerships with local firms in each of the locations where my clientele likes to live, rather than just one or two of them. I can serve them better. Most of our projects currently are based between Marbella and Sotogrande thanks to the increase in interest in the Costa del Sol market over the last two years. We have customers coming from all over Europe and we’re involved in some amazing projects. We feel very positive and enthusiastic about what we’re doing and we collaborate with some great teams of artisans in Spain.

I would characterise my style as natural and elegant, comfortable and timeless. You can easily draw comparisons between Cannes, Monaco and Marbella... They all symbolise a luxury, international lifestyle. They tend to attract people with similar backgrounds and many of them even have homes in more than one of these places...
In what ways, if any, do interior tastes differ between say the south of France and Marbella? Yes, that is interesting and I’m sure many people have their own ideas about what those differences might be. I suppose I would have to say that clients with properties on the Côte d’A zur lean towards more eclectic interiors that embrace what I’d call an ‘Arty’ trend. You tend a to find a real mix of French traditional design with art and historical influences mixed in. They also like furniture with very clean lines to bring a contemporary touch to the spaces. Marbella offers much more architectural diversity than the south of France, and this creates more potential for variation in design styles. I think that there is also a more open-minded spirit on the Costa del Sol, so clients are more willing to experiment with my help. How would you describe your design philosophy? I think that your aesthetic environment has an enormous influence on your wellbeing, and that is a significant component of my philosophy. As a result, I believe that one of the most important elements of my work as an interior designer is to improve my clients’ lives through the medium of design. I would characterise my style as natural and elegant, comfortable and timeless.
Are there any particular brands you like to work with? I see myself, and all interior designers, as being like artisans who love to use a large palette of colours, textures, materials and other elements. I work with many of the top European brands, because their products are not only perfect for a range of different locations, but also they are what my clients’ desire. Of course, I also work with several of the high-end Spanish brands and with local artisans. There are so many options available in Marbella and around the Costa del Sol, when you are looking for masters of their craft, whether it is for tiles, carpentry or a bespoke piece of furniture.
“You can easily draw comparisons between Cannes, Monaco and Marbella... They all symbolise a luxury, international lifestyle. They tend to attract people with similar backgrounds...” UTOPIA - 86
Who or what is your main design influence? We are all influenced by our cultural origins, as well as by what we learn at art and design exhibitions, travel to other cultures and by the design magazines that keep us up to date with the latest trends. However, if I had to define my way of working, I would say that my intuition when I first enter a space is my best source of inspiration. After my intuition has guided me, then I apply all my knowledge and technical experience to organise my ideas and create a harmonious and coherent plan for the whole project. Of course I admire the work of other designers and I would say that for all kinds of reasons my favourites are Nohe Duchafour, Ron Mann, Kelly Behun, Tom Dixon and Todd Alexander Romano, Zaha Hadid, Patricia Urqiola and Ora-ïto.

Belle Nouvelle A Modern and Eclectic Style Apartment in Paris The apartment located in the center of Paris owns a bright colors and vivid graphic decoration and breathtaking views over the city. Interior Designer: Nika Vorotyntseva Photographer: Mathieu Fiol
UTOPIA - 88
This 140 sq.m. apartment in the center of Paris is mainly used by its owners as a guest house, since they are a young couple of travel lovers. Before starting to create the ideal ambience, the designer chosen for this project, Nika Vorotynstseva, made an intensive study by analyzing the Parisian chic interiors. She found out that most of the interiors had an eclectic design with a gentle touch of glamour, so after this research, the designer opted to create an ambiance that was fresh, open and modern. To create as much space as possible Nika opted to eliminate the small and old-fashioned division style and open in bigger and more spacious blokes like “fireplace area, TV area, dining room with kitchen, master unit with bathroom and dressing room, and a guest room with a bathroom. As a result, we got an open space flooded with sunlight”, explains Nika. She elaborates “Our client has an artistic sort, loves bright colours and mirrors, we used this information to play with the space. Since the apartment is not for permanent residence, it gave us an opportunity to use bright colours and vivid graphics freely.” The color palette present at this residential project is so varied as the color Paris may have. The sleeping area is opposite to the living room. It’s created with soft cream colors that invites to relax. The curved ceiling in the bathroom and in the hall relate to a classic style, that supports the classic spirit of this apartment. To create a balance between this classic look and the modern flair of today’s design Nika opted to use current pieces of furniture, as well as areas such as the kitchen, that function as a bridge to everything beautiful, comfortable and ergonomic, created today. “The centerpiece of this interior is considered to be the emerald wall with decorative protruding elements in the TV area, which was created according to our sketches made in Ukraine.” Nika tells us.
Inspired by the 50’s and 60‘s this is the perfect combination for the classic but modern look that emerges all over the apartment. UTOPIA - 89
To create the elegance and balance necessary with this vibrant emerald wall the designer opted once more to innovate in the dining area by choosing a lamp that is itself a statement Ella Suspension Lamp by DelightFULL, the lines of this Lamp are so timeless as the decor can be, inspired by the 50’s and 60‘s this is the perfect combination for the classic but modern look that emerges all over the apartment. By the fireplace, we can relax, enjoy the nature outside and appreciate the light inside with the two Ella Wall Lamps also by DelightFULL, which can make the nights seems calm and everlasting together with the classic mirror.
Nika Vorotynstseva
Nika is a young Ukrainian designer based in Kiev, owner of the Nika Vorotyntseva Design & Architecture Bureau. She has currently several works in progress all over the world. “We love what we do. Our work - is the ability to create something special, important for people. Each project is unique and also unique experience that we acquire. We try to implement the ideas that bring pleasure to the customer and ourselves. Our team is ready to work actively, sharing fresh ideas and take part in the formation of modern trends.”

Rediscovering CELEBRATED IRAQI ARCHITECT BASIL AL BAYATI, WHO HAS OFFICES IN LONDON AND MÁLAGA IS OPENING A CULTURAL CENTRE IN THE HEART OF MÁLAGA CITY THAT WILL ENABLE RESIDENTS AND VISITORS TO EXPERIENCE THE CULTURE OF AL-ANDALUS THROUGH ITS CRAFTSMANSHIP, ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN. IT’S GOING TO BE CALLED “THE UNIQUE WORLD OF BASIL AL BAYATI” AND IT IS A PROJECT THAT HAS TAKEN THREE YEARS TO COME TO FRUITION. The centre will be housed at 3 Calle Marqués de Guadiaro in a building that dates from 1877 and was designed by Jerónimo Cuervo. It will exhibit Al Bayati’s architectural work as well as his furniture designs and his ventures into literature. He has an interesting reason for selecting Málaga as the home of his project: “I came to Málaga in 1976 and I liked it because it reminds me of Baghdad, where I was born.” Sadly, for Baghdad and Al Bayati, he may not be able to make the same comparison today. This new addition to Málaga’s cultural life is also a feather in the city’s cap as Al Bayati was approached by offers from the UK and Germany to set it up those countries. But, the architect who has worked all over Europe, stuck with southern Spain, mostly because “the concept fits in better” as he told reporters.
The project’s budget started out at 1 million euros, but this has apparently doubled due to a number of extra renovations that were required. Visitors will find a book and gift shop on the ground floor, stocking books published by Fabulist, which is owned by Al Bayati. Its output covers a diverse range of topics including architecture, fiction, psychology and the history of Andalucia under the Moors. The cafeteria on the first floor promises to be rather grand with its hand-carved wooden ceilings and lamps specially made in Turkey. What is more it will focus on serving food that is ecological and vegetarian. The second floor will house temporary exhibitions alongside architectural displays, ceramics and furniture. One of Al Bayati’s intentions is to create links with the Architecture School of Málaga and the College of Architects in order to encourage joint working on projects. There is also space for workshops and conferences, and Al Bayati will live above it all as it were. However, visitors will still have access to the roof terrace, which provides great views of the cathedral and Alcazaba. The centre opens in March 2017 and will provide students and anyone interested in the cultural legacy that the Moors left in Spain with another opportunity to understand its magnificence.
About Basil Al Bayati (1946 -) He has been described as “an architect in whom East meets West” and is considered one of the most important names in Metaphoric Architecture. This approach uses analogy and metaphor as a basis for architectural inspiration as well as the “exploration of geometric and design patterns found in nature.” Some of his most notable buildings are the Great Mosque in Edinburgh and the Palm Mosque in Riyadh as well as Hyde Park Gate Mews in London and Church Island House in Staines, Middlesex. He studied at the University of Baghdad before being granted a British Council scholarship to study at University College London School of Environmental Studies. He them moved on to the Architectural Association school and was elected to the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in 1980. In 1986, he was awarded a doctorate by the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) for his research into Islamic architecture. UTOPIA - 92
