The Famous Buildings of
Baron Thames
Bank By Eleanor McKenzie
FROM A GROUNDBREAKING GLASS OFFICE BUILDING IN MEDIEVAL IPSWICH TO LUNAR HOUSING, SPACE STATIONS AND DRONEPORTS, NORMAN FOSTER IS NEVER AFRAID TO FACE ANY FINAL FRONTIER IN ARCHITECTURE. You may wonder who Baron Thames Bank is. Well, it’s Norman Foster, one of the most famous living architects. Born in Cheshire in 1935, he has become one of the most prolific architects of his generation and his practice, Foster + Partners, is globally renowned for high-tech architecture. Foster has won the Pritzker Architecture Prize, considered by some to be the Nobel Prize of architecture, the Prince of Asturias Award and the AIA Gold Medal. After completing his National Service and serving in the Royal Air Force, he won a place at the University of Manchester School of Architecture in 1956. His main influences during his studies were Frank Lloyd Wright, Oscar Niemeyer, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier, the man who seems to have inspired almost every architect of note. After leaving Manchester he won a place at Yale where he met his future business partner, Richard Rogers with whom he set up the practice Team 4. When this practice split up and Foster founded Foster + Partners, he then collaborated with famous American architect Richard Buckminster Fuller and the two focused on industrial buildings. However, his breakthrough moment happened in 1974 with his design for the Willis Faber and Dumas HQ in Ipswich. Foster’s design for this family run insurance company was an indicator of his future creations. The brief was to restore a sense of community to the workplace, so Foster created open plan floors, long before that became fashionable, and included roof gardens, a 25 metre swimming pool and gym for the 1200 employees. The building’s exterior is glass that shifts from opaque, reflective black to a backlit transparency as the sun sets. It is now a Grade 1 listed building. His nearby Sainsbury Centre for the Arts on the University of East Anglia campus in Norwich is now Grade II listed and his terminal building at London Stansted airport won the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture.
UTOPIA - 14
He has developed international recognition for his office buildings. The ones of particular note are the HSBC Main Building in Hong Kong. Housing 3500 workers, it is famed for its light and transparency that result in spectacular views across to Victoria Peak and harbour. In London, the skyline has been forever changed by Foster’s 30 St. Mary Axe, which everyone knows as ‘The Gherkin’.
“As an architect, you design for the present, with an awareness of the past, for a future which is essentially unknown.”
We’ve put together seven of the buildings that represent his style and his legacy to the field of architectural design, and they all show that Foster’s imagination never stands still and that he is one of the key influencers of future city, continent and planetary design.
UTOPIA - 15
2012, Lunar Habitation, The Moon At the age of 77, Foster and his firm started exploring the idea of “off-earth building.” The design uses 3-D printed architecture and whilst Foster is highly regarded for his ability “to find solutions to earth-bound architectural parameters, the move to space is without precedent both in concept and building strategy.” The concept was developed in partnership with the European Space Agency, with Foster’s firm also looking for ways to get around the limitations of having to transport building materials from the earth, by proposing lunar soil, known as regolith, as an integral component to construction. Architecture Daily describes the planned lunar accommodation as, “a base designed for four inhabitants that begins as a tubular structure, brought from earth, from which an inflatable dome would emerge as a membranous mound, around which regolith would be laid by a 3D-printing robot. Mixed with a printing agent, the lunar soil would be laid in a hollow cellular-like pattern, created by the firm and a consortium of partners, to mimic biological systems.” Architecture doesn’t get much more modern than this!
1971-1975, Willis Faber and Dumas Headquarters, Ipswich, United Kingdom Foster’s first green building and a dramatic example of “environmentally informed, respectful design,” says Architecture Daily. He fitted it into the Ipswich’s medieval street plan and demonstrated his ability to subvert the tenets of modernism, and create a building that was “shaped by its surroundings and purposefully at odds with the waning tendency for ahistorical architecture.” The building’s all-glass facade, developed with Pilkington, hangs from a clamping strip at the roof level and the glass panels are connected by corner patch fittings and are jointed to each other with silicon. This is the coated glass that stays almost black during the day and is translucent at night.
2000-2006, Hearst Tower, New York City, USA This is one of Foster’s most important commissions and probably one of his more dramatic. This entailed reuse of an existing building, the one designed by Joseph Urban in 1928 for William Randolph Hearst on 8th Avenue, when Hearst was envisioning the growth of a massive media empire. At the time, his desire for a skyscraper was rejected due to the constraints of the Great Depression, but 80 years later, Foster came along and designed a tower using the existing building as a base for the landmark. Foster’s tower is “a diagrid of stainless steel and e-clear glass that emerges from the original base and the two structures share an Art Deco angularity that creates a harmony between old and new.” UTOPIA - 16
2014, SkyCycle, London, United Kingdom Again, proving that he has taken up the cause of a greener and more sustainable future, Foster worked on this design in collaboration with Exterior Architecture and Space Syntax. The proposed SkyCycle is intended to encourage more bicycle ridership in London that will solve the capital’s transport problems, especially as the city is growing at a rate of 12% over
the next decade. “SkyCycle is a network of elevated cycle paths that follow the existing suburban rail lines. The proposal calls for over 135 miles of paths with 200 points of access that could support 12,000 rides per hour, in a system that would cover six million people and reduce commutes by an estimated 29 minutes,” reports Architecture Daily.
1992-1998, Chek Lap Kok Airport, Hong Kong, China Foster is a popular architect in the rapidly developing Far East and he considers this airport to be “one of the most ambitious construction projects of the modern era.” This small city is built on an island that was previously home to mountainous terrain with a 100-metre peak. This was levelled to 7 metres above sea level, and the island was expanded to four times its original size.
UTOPIA - 17
2016-2020, Rwandan Droneport This extraordinary development is a collaboration between Foster’s firm and Afrotech. The building is hoped to be the world’s first medical supply shipping facility operated by drones in Rwanda. Africa’s population will double to 2.2 billion by 2150 and Foster foresees a gap between people and the infrastructure. In response, he has said, “We require immediate bold, radical solutions to address this issue. The Droneport project is about doing more with less, capitalising on the recent advancements in drone technology – something that is usually associated with war and hostilities – to make an immediate life-saving impact in Africa.” The building is constructed in the form of a series of brick vaults over open-air spaces that are divided into medical centre, mailrooms, an e-commerce trading hub, and a space for drone manufacturing. Foster believes that droneports could be as common across Africa as petrol stations. He could be right.
2006-2014, Spaceport America, New Mexico, USA Richard Branson’s Virgin Group is behind the space enterprise that is commercially known as the Virgin Galactic Gateway to Space. Although issues with funding and spacecraft safety have halted completion of the structure, it is undeniably a design that seems to have come from beyond earth. Foster intended the low, sweeping design to evoke the mysteries of space and if you are lucky enough to visit it you will discover that “the spaceport is a spectacle unto itself, because its remoteness requires no design restraint.”

Such is the quality of this project that the Spanish edition of Architectural Digest featured the Marbella villa on its cover with the headline, “Japan? No, it’s Marbella.” As the journal pointed out, Marbella has managed to retain its aura of glamour that brought it to international attention in the 1960s and 70s and that part of this is due to the quality of the architecture in the area, particularly the villas and mansions that owe more to the influence of the Andalucian pueblos blancos than the massive apartment blocks. It is evident that Alejandro Giménez has drawn on the way that the Spanish traditions are sympathetic to the natural surroundings when working on this project that is surrounded by pine forests and only 100 metres from the beach.
UTOPIA - 21
Alejandro Giménez is an architect who follows his own path and enjoys discovering his own form of expression. In his recent design for a villa in the prestigious Nueva Andalucía area, he has drawn on the poetry of Lorca, the legacy of Arab Andalucia and flamenco as well as his love of Mexican and Japanese concepts to create a residence of exceptional beauty. He is praised in the press and the Spanish edition of Architectural Digest featured another of his designs, a villa in Las Chapas on its cover with the headline, “Japan? No, it’s Marbella.” As the journal pointed out, Marbella has managed to retain its aura of glamour that brought it to international attention in the 1960s and 70s and that part of this is due to the quality of the architecture in the area, particularly the villas and mansions that owe more to the influence of the Andalucian pueblos blancos than the massive apartment blocks. It is evident that Alejandro Giménez has drawn on the way that the Spanish traditions are sympathetic to the natural surroundings when working on this project. His overarching goal was to conceive a villa specifically for this location using the natural light and gardens as reference points. Access to the residence is through a ‘secret’ door and it is filled with subtleties that one only discovers bit by bit.
UTOPIA - 22
The architect’s vision As you can see from the photos, Alejandro has created a series of interconnecting spaces that gives the house a sense of mystery, which is one of the trademarks of his style; you really have to walk all over this house to know it in its entirety and it still feels as if there might be a hidden corner you haven’t yet discovered. The exterior is white in the Andalucian style, but the fine details are distinctly influenced by Japanese architecture, a culture that GimÊnez much admires. For example, the courtyard has pebbles, a pond for turtles, a fountain and a

In addition, he used Mortex on the floors and to line the swimming pool, providing a sense of seamless continuity between indoors and the water. Bonding the relation between the interior and exterior is very important to GimĂŠnez: from the kitchen to the terrace, to the pool. The white of the exterior walls continues inside and even the marble floors are white. Light is filtered through cane blinds that create a very special atmosphere. The living room opens on to the outdoor terrace via large, glass sliding doors. In another part of the living area there are fireplaces for winter comfort. His use of

The furniture is made to measure and reflects Giménez’s commitment to craftsmanship and the work of the artisan. Lighting and ventilation are also very important features of this project. You can’t see any direct lighting in the rooms; it is concealed in the walls and ceilings in such a way that it creates a wraparound environment. And, to avoid the use of air conditioning, the architect has used cross-ventilation and thick walls so that the interior temperature in summer is maintained at a pleasant level. It is a home that admirers of contemporary architecture and interior design will fall in love with and it showcases the considerable talent of Alejandro Giménez. BUILDINGS to visit in
THESE BUILDINGS ARE BOTH ANCIENT AND MODERN AND GIVE A FLAVOUR OF THE EXCEPTIONAL ARCHITECTURE THAT EXISTS ACROSS AFRICA.
Church of St. George, Lalibela, Ethiopia There can be few churches in the world quite as extraordinary as this rock-hewn church from the medieval period. The town has 11 churches from this period, but St. George’s, or Bet Giorgis, is the finest. From an elevated height you can see that the roof is in the shape of a crucifix, whilst the interior testifies to the fact that Africa in this period of history was pretty cosmopolitan as there are images, carvings and influences from all over Christendom and beyond: a two-headed eagle you’d have been more likely to see in Constantinople; the star of David with the cross carved inside it and carvings that resemble Greek religious icons.

Jardin Majorelle, Marrakech, Morocco This is probably one of the most famous houses in the world, in part thanks to the fact that it once belonged to fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent. The house is an oasis of calm and is renowned for its vibrant blue colour. In 1931, French orientalist Jacques Majorelle commissioned architect Paul Sinoir to build him a studio in an art deco-Islamic style. Majorelle and his son Louis, a furniture designer, decided to create a living work of art: a majestic garden of exotic plants. The garden was officially opened to the public in 1947, then abandoned after Jacques Majorelle’s death in 1962. It was left derelict for 20 years until Saint Laurent bought the property and restored it to its former glory.

Kenyatta International Conference Centre, Nairobi, Kenya The 28-storey conference centre towers over Nairobi. Kenyan president Jomo Kenyatta commissioned it in 1967 and Norwegian architect Karl Henrik Nøstvik designed it. When completed in 1973, it became the country’s first post-independence government building. The architecture consists of a tower, amphitheatre, a spectacular plenary and a courtyard. The idea of using terracotta facade draws inspiration from traditional African architecture; the tower has a revolving restaurant offering panoramic views of Nairobi that takes 76 minutes to complete one revolution.
Basilica of our Lady of Peace, Yamoussoukro, Ivory Coast
Although only a third of the country’s population is Christian, the “Basilica in the Bush” is the largest church in the world. The first president of Ivory Coast commissioned it and he didn’t penny pinch on the materials: the marble was imported from Italy; 7,000 sq metres of hand-blown stained glass
windows from France and it was completed in four years, at a cost of over £190m. The Catholic church thought it was too extravagant and wanted the site replaced by a hospital. Although the president initially agreed, the hospital never happened.
UTOPIA - 33
Independence Square, Accra, Ghana Independence Square, or Black Star Square, is the second largest square in the world after Tiananmen in China. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first president, commissioned it in 1961. The square is made up of several elements: the Black Star Monument, reminiscent of the Arc de Triomphe, is inscribed with “Freedom and Justice, AD 1957”, commemorating Ghana’s independence; eight stands around the periphery have the capacity to seat more than 30,000 people and the vast space within the square is designed for huge events and military parades. The inspiration for the arch is said to have come from the handle of a handbag carried by Nkrumah’s wife, although present day observers might be tempted to compare it with the arch of a certain fast food chain.
Apartheid Museum, Johannesburg, South Africa
UTOPIA - 34
The museum, which was inaugurated in 2001, commemorates apartheid, one the most atrocious political and social policies inflicted on African peoples. The policy, introduced in 1948 turned native South Africans into second-class citizens subjected to a regime that consistently humiliated and abused them until 1994. The Apartheid Museum tells the story of how the people triumphed over adversity. The architecture focuses on light, which grows brighter as visitors make their way around the exhibits that culminates in a room dedicated to Nelson Mandela. The seven concrete pillars, each one 18 metres high, bear the inscriptions: democracy, freedom, responsibility, equality, reconciliation, diversity and tolerance.
Meroe Royal Baths, Meroe, Sudan The ancient city of Meroe lies northwest of Khartoum on the banks of the Nile and has several palaces as well as 200 pyramids. The Royal Baths were unearthed in 1912 by John Garstang of the University of Liverpool and were given UNESCO World Heritage status in 2011. These ruins testify to the vast
exchange of art, architecture, religion and language that once existed between the Mediterranean and Africa. Award winning international architect Francis Kéré from Burkina Faso has proposed designing a protective shelter to place over the baths that will celebrate the cultural importance of the site.
The Great Mosque of Djenné, Mali This other-worldy building is the largest one on the world constructed entirely of mud, or earth-brick. It is considered the greatest example of Sudano-Sahelian architecture. The present mosque, completed in 1907, is the third reconstruction of the building that was originally built in the 13th century on the flood plains of the Bani river. Gahanga International Children’s Cancer Treatment Centre, Gahanga, Rwanda Designed by British-Tanzanian architect David Adjaye, the construction, which started in late 2015 and is expected to be completed in 2017, was commissioned by the Eugène Gasana Jr Foundation to be the first paediatric cancer treatment centre in all of Africa. The 40,000-sq-metre rectangular building is set in a four-hectare site. The architecture responds to the climate and location: the facade is shaded by screens comprised of triangular forms, which increase or decrease in density with the building’s orientation to the sun. In addition, the geometric facade draws inspiration from traditional Imigongo art, which involves applying a surface of cow dung to a wall before adding graphic patterns in black, white and red.
Angola’s cinemas, Angola Angola tends to be known for its civil wars and its oil boom. But, in the 20th century, Angola underwent a boom in cinemas. Between the 1930s and late 1970s, 50 cinemas were built across the country, but the Cinema Infante Sagres, in its capital Luanda was by far the largest on the African continent when it opened in 1975. These cathedrals of culture, also referred to as cine-esplanadas (open-air cinemas), are colourful, modernist buildings that are now mostly derelict. A few are being restored – such as Cine-Atlantico and Cine-Teatro Nacional, the oldest cinema in Luanda – heralding a revival in cinema culture. UTOPIA - 36

BUILDING the COAST
ANDY, THE FOUNDER OF PROMAS BUILDING, HAS BEEN IN THE CONSTRUCTION BUSINESS FOR AROUND 20 YEARS AND 13 OF THEM HAVE BEEN SPENT WORKING IN SPAIN, FOLLOWING SEVEN YEARS IN ENGLAND. THESE TWO DECADES OF EXPERIENCE HAVE NOT ONLY GIVEN HIM KNOWLEDGE OF ALL ASPECTS OF THE BUILDING TRADE, IT HAS ALSO PROVIDED HIM WITH A WEALTH OF INSIGHTS
INTO WHAT THE CLIENT WANTS AND NEEDS, AND, AT PROMAS, THE CLIENT IS VERY MUCH THE PRIMARY CONSIDERATION. Andy visits every project ProMas is working on every
single day to keep track of progress and keep the client updated. When you consider that ProMas covers the areas from Màlaga to Estepona, both on the coast and inland, this shows his dedication and is indicative of the pride and love Andy has for his work and his business, as well as his respect for his clients.
A new office in east Marbella In order to serve its clients even better, ProMas has recently opened a new office in east Marbella where the team is able to offer a full service that includes architects, interior designers as well as construction. It means that the client who wants to build a new property, or reform an existing one, has everything under one roof. It also enhances the way every department of ProMas works together and makes it more streamlined. There is less chance of wires getting crossed, so to speak. However, this doesn’t prevent clients from bringing their own architect into the project, as Andy is keen to point out. At ProMas they understand the need to be flexible.
The gift of 3D renders It has also introduced 3D renders using video software that provide clients with an added extra, and ProMas offers this free to clients who sign a contract with them. This offer is a gift. The work involved in putting together a 3D video render takes weeks and considerable skill. Andy’s reasoning behind introducing this service is this: it adds value to the project for the client and it makes the client happy. Furthermore, the 3D video render not only allows the client to see what the finished project will look like and helps them to think about how UTOPIA - 40
they will personalise, they can also use it as a promotional tool if they want to rent out the property. As Andy points out, “Most of our clients live abroad and we provide regular email updates and photos taken each time from the building site. We then upload photos using Dropbox regularly so the clients can view the progress in every detail as if they were on site every day.”
The 3D video render not only allows the client to see what the finished project will look like and helps them to think about how they will personalise, they can also use it as a promotional tool if they want to rent out the property... ProMas offers this free to clients who sign a contract with them.
The process of constructing a 3D render starts with a meeting with the clients to discuss their dreams and what they ideally want. Andy then measures the property and the existing layout is drawn up in architectural plan format. These plans are used as the basis of the new layout and once the client has approved these, work starts on creating 3D images of what the property will look like in the end. Finally it becomes a video
that takes you on a complete tour of the interior and exterior. It is a very polished and sophisticated product. Once the client has approved the plans and 3D renders then the construction work begins and is done to a very high standard finish.
From small improvements to complete new builds But, this is just one aspect of ProMas’s work: this firm will undertake any type of building work, from small home improvements such as new bathrooms, new kitchens, extensions, to a total villa reform and restoration and new builds. Past and current projects include new kitchen design, refurbishments, home extensions, swimming pools or converting commercial premises. It employs experts in every field such as masonry, plumbing, decking, plastering, air conditioning, pergolas, tiling, electricity, patios, pools, painting and carpentry, and Andy has good relations with numerous contractors on the Costa del Sol and keeps large teams in constant work. It can also assist with building licence applications when required. Plus, clients will be pleased to know that ProMas is fully insured and provides free estimates.

Before Project Villa in Puerto Banus This villa project in Puerto BanĂşs demonstrates the way in which ProMas can bring new life to an older residence. The client, who had bought a somewhat tired villa some years ago, decided that they would like to use it for high-end holiday lets, so they contacted ProMas. The whole look of the villa was redesigned and modernised to give it a more contemporary feel. The two floors have been completely redistributed and it now includes 6 bedrooms with 6 bathrooms and two cloakrooms. The villa has one large entrance, a living space with TV, fireplace and small kitchenette area that has stunning sea views. The ground floor also has a living room with a beautiful and spacious, open-plan modern kitchen and dining area, and all lead onto the large terrace. The swimming pool has been redesigned and the garden level raised so that the ground floor of the house is now level with the garden and swimming pool. No more steps!
As an extra design feature that makes the house look more contemporary, ProMas removed the tiled pitch roof and substituted it with a beautiful flat roof with glass railings, which has created extra space for sunbathing and admiring the breathtaking views! Landmark BUILDINGS OF THE WORLD By Eleanor McKenzie
THERE ARE MANY CELEBRATED ARCHITECTS ON THE COSTA DEL SOL, EACH WITH THEIR OWN INDIVIDUAL STYLE. UTOPIA ASKED THEM TO SELECT A BUILDING ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD THAT THEY CONSIDER GROUNDBREAKING AND WHICH HAS INFLUENCED THEIR WORK. IN THIS ISSUE, ANDY FROM PROMAS REVEALS HIS CHOICE. My Landmark Building The Berman House by Harry Seidler About Harry Seidler (1923 – 2006)
“Seidler was consistently inspired by works of art; a concept which seems to be fading away nowadays, as buildings become more efficient and calculated.”
Harry Seidler was an Austrian-born Australian architect. He is considered by many to have been the leading light of Modernism in Australia and the first Australian architect to express the principles of Bauhaus in his work. His education in design started at Cambridgeshire Technical School in England. Harry and his family had escaped to England as Jewish refugees, although in 1940 he was interned as an enemy alien by the British authorities because he had been born in Austria. After a year in a prison camp on the Isle of Man followed by a term in another camp in Canada, he was released on probation from internment to study architecture at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada, where he graduated with first class honours in 1944. He became a Canadian citizen in 1945.
Although Seidler was only a child when the Bauhaus closed, he studied with a number of the famous art school’s teachers who had made it to North America, including Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer at Harvard Graduate School of Design. He also managed to “He brought obtain vacation work with Alvar Aalto and then became a student of painter Josef Albers at Black Mountain College in a sense of 1946.

style and sophistication, beauty, and refinement to Australia...”
Seidler ended up in Australia at the request of his parents who had moved there. His mother commissioned him to design a new home for them and he chose ot stay until the project was finished. The result was the “Rose Seidler House” in Wahroonga on Sydney’s Upper North Shore. This became a house-museum in 1991. This project was the first completely modern domestic residence to fully express the philosophy and visual language of the Bauhaus in Australia and won the Sulman Award in 1951. From the huge publicity of this house, others approached Seidler to design their homes. And, with so many clients and his enjoyment of the Sydney climate and harbour views, Seidler decided to stay in Australia. Seidler’s houses are the core element of his design legacy and his influence on current architects is undeniable. Indeed, many claim that he provided a pivotal insight into the purpose of architecture and guided them in finding meaningful solutions.
UTOPIA - 54
He once told Jeremy Edmiston of the award-winning New York firm SYSTEMarchitects, “Architecture isn’t about style,” Seidler told him. “It’s about contemporary means and methods and how we can articulate that with clarity.” Another architect, Stefan Heim of Durbach Block, worked with Seidler in 2004 on rebuilding a house the famous architect had originally designed in 1950. Heim says, “Harry would always ask, ‘What

is the best material for something? What’s the most functional product?’ Now I ask myself the same questions whenever I design something.” Vladimir Belogolovsky, who curated an exhibition of Seidler’s work in 2013, said: “He brought a sense of style and sophistication, beauty, and refinement to Australia. He can teach Australian architects how to address local sun and climate, how to explore the wonderful qualities of concrete – of which he was a true poet in collaboration with Pier Luigi Nervi– and how to benefit the public by providing open spaces such as plazas within privately owned corporate urban projects.” Belogolovsky says the main element that up-and-coming architects can take from Seidler is the way he was able to find a particular artistic solution in each project.
rocks and graceful modern forms.” The couple, who were looking for a retreat with privacy discovered Seilder through a TV programme and then bumped into him on the street the following day. Seidler considered siting the house on a sheltered ledge just above the river, but he realized it would be vulnerable to flooding. The Bermans urged him to build at the top, laughing off his concern that their children might tumble over the edge. He found two natural platforms in the sandstone, one slightly higher than the other, on which to place the house and a natural depression to the north for the pool. “A level roof would be rather a dull thing to do on such a marvelous site,” observes the architect. “Thanks to modern technology, we can bend and twist steel like spaghetti into any configuration we want.” Bronwyn Berman’s verdict on the house was: “There’s a flow, a harmony and a perfect composition—not a jarring note.”
“Harry treated a small house or a huge building as a total work of art without compromise,” he says. “Seidler was consistently inspired by works of art; a concept which seems to be fading away nowadays, as buildings become more efficient and calculated.” Seidler consistently won architectural awards every decade throughout his Australian career of almost 58 years across the varied categories – his residential work from 1950, his commercial work from 1964, and his public commissions from the 1970s. He was a controversial figure throughout his long career as he regularly publicly criticised planning authorities and the planning system in Sydney.
The Berman House – New South Wales This award-winning house was built for Peter and Bronwyn Berman in virgin countryside near the top of a deep valley with a winding river below. Architectural Digest describes it as “quintessentially Australian in its juxtaposition of ancient

What makes this building exceptional? I love the use of materials within the landscape; partly blending into it like camouflage by using stone, and partly standing out from it with the spectacular wave roof and balcony projecting over the edge.
Has this building, or architect, influenced your work in any way? His use of glass is something I use a lot here in the Marbella climate because it allows light to flood in to wide, open-plan spaces. promasbuilding.com

A FAR OUT PAVILION IN
CAPE TOWN LIKE MARBELLA, CAPE TOWN HAS A CONSIDERABLE NUMBER OF STUNNING VILLAS AND MANSIONS. ONE OF THESE HAS RECENTLY ADDED A GARDEN PAVILION FOR OUTDOOR DINING THAT MAY INSPIRE BOTH DESIGNERS AND VILLA OWNERS ON THE COSTA DEL SOL. South African architecture firm Metropolis was commissioned to design sheltered seating and dining areas that maximised the views of Table Mountain in the wealthy suburb of Constantia. The construction formed part of an overall renovation of the residence and the owners wanted a pavilion in their spacious terraced garden where they could entertain guests whilst enjoying views of the mountain and coastline. That sounds rather familiar to Marbella residents who have La Concha and Mediterranean views. The pavilion is constructed from a series of thick concrete slabs that are arranged to provide a shelter that extends from the plot’s southerly hillside. The roof canopy rests on the rear walls and is supported by a slender pillar at the front to create an expanse of open space beneath. Metropolis said, “The form is neither purely aesthetic nor purely rational. It is conceived to be elemental, oelf,

more of an object than a building, which can compete in its perceptual power with the strength of the surrounding landscape on the one hand and the artificiality of its immediate surroundings on the other.” At one end the pavilion has sheltered benches built into the main structure. These surround a fire pit and a suspended chimney all raised a few steps above the main dining area. It has a work surface/food preparation along one wall and this extends as far as the open-air patio with barbecue. The pavilion also houses a small kitchen with food storage space and a toilet and outdoor shower are discreetly tucked away behind the kitchen. Prior to the construction of this stunning pavilion, this area of the gardens had a series of extravagant water features including cascades, ponds and fountains. Now, only one pond and fountain remains. According to Metropolis,
According to Metropolis, the owners wanted this ‘extravagance’ toned down and asked for a “meaningful outdoor relaxation area for the appreciation of the back of Table Mountain to the north.”
the owners wanted this ‘extravagance’ toned down and asked for a “meaningful outdoor relaxation area for the appreciation of the back of Table Mountain to the north.” The remaining fountain sits in a basin like formation that the architects created around the pavilion. They have used wooden decking throughout the structure, but also extended it beyond the building and into the front and rear garden to connect, the pavilion, the fountain and the villa. The Metropolis team explained: “ The building is intended to be of nature: to contain a distillation of landscape which then allows it to be naturally contained by its surroundings.

Cultural Centre IN SENEGAL
Iwan Baan
A CULTURAL CENTRE DESIGNED BY A JAPANESE ARCHITECT IN A REMOTE SENEGALESE VILLAGE IS ONE OF THE RECIPIENTS OF THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTURE’S 2017 DESIGN AWARDS. THE ARTISTS’ RESIDENCY AND CULTURAL CENTER BY ARCHITECTURE FIRM TOSHIKO MORI JOINED THE PINTEREST HQ IN SAN FRANCISCO AND THE ASPEN ART MUSEUM IN COLORADO AMONGST THIS YEAR’S WINNERS, ALTHOUGH IT MUST BE SAID THAT MORI’S WORK STANDS OUT FOR BEING IN A MORE DISTINCTIVE LOCATION THAN THE OTHERS, WHICH ARE IN MAINSTREAM LOCATIONS WHERE YOU EXPECT TO SEE THE WORK OF GREAT ARCHITECTS. Mori used entirely local materials and building techniques in constructing the building, which is located in the village of Sinthian, far away from any urban centre of design. The building is a hub for the local community; it is used as a meeting place and performance space, as well as a place where visiting artists can spend a period of residency. The architect developed the concept to complement the existing buildings around the site. These include a clinic, a kindergarten and a farming school. UTOPIA - 72

The cultural centre, which has become known as The Thread, uses the same compressed earth and thatch as the other edifices around it, albeit in a stunning and dramatic way. The Thread is the result of collaboration between two not-for-profit organisations –Josef and Annie Albers Foundation and American Friends of La Korsa—with the intention of promoting unity between the twelve tribes who will use the new space. The centre’s twisting, wave-like roof is one of its most dramatic design features and it seems to swoop like the wing of a bird over the enclosed workshop spaces and residential bedrooms areas at either end. In the central area of the building there is a massive gathering space flanked on either side by open-air courtyards. The architects from the Toshiko Mori firm describe the roof as a “parametric transformation of the traditional pitched roof that is achieved through the process of inversion. It inscribes a series of courtyards within the plan of the building whilst simultaneously creating shaded areas around the perimeter of the courtyard.” The wavy thatched roof also helps to collect rainwater that is then stored in large reservoirs and used by local women to water crops during Senegal’s long dry season. Bamboo was used to create the framework and compressed earth blocks form the walls. The bricks were actually made on site and help absorb heat while the perforated sections allow air to flow through and provide natural ventilation to the interior. The flooring was made from broken, recycled tiles that have changing tones of colour to demarcate different areas of the building. It took 35 local workers one year to complete building The Thread, which also has a library, children’s play gym and a centre for charging mobile phones. The judges of the AIA awards praised it for, “Providing a community with a sense of ownership and simplifying efforts to maintain it, employing local workers and providing training for residents of a very remote area where entrepreneurship is scarce.”

THE EYES OF THE WORLD ARE NO LONGER SO CLOSELY FOCUSED ON THE WEST. THE BOOM IN ASIA, WHICH HAS CREATED A GROWING MIDDLE CLASS HAS MADE THE EAST A VAST REGION CLAIMING MUCH MORE ATTENTION. IT SEEMS LOGICAL THEN THAT AT SOME POINT OUR ATTENTION WILL TURN TO AFRICA, AND YOU COULD SAY THAT IT IS THE CONTINENT OF THE FUTURE THANKS TO INCREASING INVESTMENT. We are all aware of this continent’s long years of suffering, which continues in many parts, but many are optimistic that resource-rich and culturally diverse Africa will finally take centre stage and its supporters are determined that this will finally be done in the right way. Historically, colonialists determined what happened in much of Africa. The lack of understanding, or sympathy for Africa, even amongst well-meaning non-governmental organisations (NGOs) meant that the good they thought they were doing still acted against the interests of the region. The buildings consumed excessive energy, the clothes donations damaged native textile industries and reforestation programmes introduced plants that needed excessive water and were also flammable.
Mokena Makeka – Makeka Design Lab Born in South Africa and working in South Africa, Lesotho and Tanzania, Makeka is one of a new generation of South African architects whose career has been built on dealing with the legacy of apartheid on a professional and personal level. As a young architect he had to fight the perception that he was “only there because of the Black Economic Empowerment policy” designed to help black professionals in the postapartheid era. As a result, many of
“How do democratise a building that was not designed with democracy in mind?”
In response, there has been a growth in the use of native practices and architects are working on designs for buildings that learn from Africa’s traditions whilst also improving them. The five African architects profiled here are combining local practice with Western solutions and adding the flair of individual cultures. Gone is the notion of a “pan-African culture,” these architects are working on a diverse range of projects including, “sustainable rural developments, high end luxury residences and dignified civic structures.” What they share is a bright vision of Africa’s future. UTOPIA - 83
his designs “come from an ambivalence towards the South African institutions that historically excluded sections of the population.” Makeka’s work therefore, typically focuses on transforming the “imposing, fortress-like architecture of apartheid era buildings into delicate and vulnerable ones,” as he describes it. He is best known for the refurbishment of Cape Town railway station in time for the 2010 World Cup that required removing the elements of the station’s original structure form the 1960s that focused on segregating black from white. The new open plan station moves the focus away from the trains to the passengers themselves, and removes the idea of controlled entry entirely. His other major work is I the Thusong Service Centre in Khayelitsha township. His reformed government services centre is part of an ongoing plan to integrate the township into Cape Town and the dignified design of the Thusong Centre is a step towards introducing formal building into the area.
Francis Kéré – Kéré Architecture
Kunlé Adeyemi Nigerian born and working from The Netherlands on prjects in Nigeria and Tanzania, Adeyemi is known for challenging the idea that to modernise means to Westernise. The son of one of Nigeria’s first indigenous architects, he tends to focus on the expansion of African cities with luxury developments and high rise offices. One of his most famous buildings is the floating school in the Makoko district of Lagos. “I am The school uses traditional Nigerian forms in a modern constantly way and is uniquely suited to Makoko’s location on inspired by a lagoon. He has been working on a proposal to solutions we expand the floating school idea into an entire floating discover in residential area with a commercial centre for Makoko everyday life that he believes will help challenge Lagos’ vulnerability in the world’s to climate change.
developing cities.”
Outside the floating town project, Adeyemi is known for his context-specific urban planning and his residential proposals that continue these themes. For example, the modular Yaba Prototype is a well-designed yet low cost, efficient scheme which could be developed as a new form of urban housing for Nigeria’s middle class that is estimated to grow by 7.6 million over the next 15 years.
UTOPIA - 84
Born in Burkina Faso, he studied in Germany before returning home. He now works in Burkina Faso, Kenya, Mali and Togo. On retuning to his birth village of Gando, he set about transforming it using his European training and traditional African methods to construct an approach that “incorporates native solutions to high temperatures, lack of resources and seasonal weather.” In his work in Gando, he uses local materials replacing the heat retaining and power intensive concrete with locally made mud bricks, coupled with wide overhanging roofs designed to resist the rainy season and allow passive air circulation to cool the building. His first buildings were a library and schools, plus teachers’ housing and a community “In traditional Africa, centre. He is also highly regarded architecture is a social for tackling deforestation by using fact…the building Eucalyptus wood for the buildings, a tree often planted by reforestation programs process just happens. Architecture is defined that is water hungry and unsuited to the local climate, and replacing them through the construction with mango trees, which provide both process.” a source of fruit and shade to the local community. He is also prominent in promoting the use of earth architecture as a way of combating deforestation.

Mpethi Morojele – MMA Architects Born in Lesotho and working from South Africa on projects in Ehtiopia, Uganda, Botswana, Lesotho and South Africa, Morojele is the architect of the first South African embassies since the end of apartheid and is considered a key architectural visionary of the country post apartheid. His MMA practice is one of the first black-owned design firms in SA and has been a leading light in this sector. MMA’s work on high-profile institutional projects such as embassies and university buildings reflects Morojele’s strong involvement in the efforts to remake the face of the African city to serve the public and reflect social commentary. Morojele’s cultural interest can be seen in his designs for the South African embassy buildings in Ethiopia and Germany. Embassies
are complex buildings that are required to “Our focus is on exhibit a sense of national self while still the ability of design fitting into the foreign context in which they are placed. The Berlin embassy was the to respond to and first South African embassy constructed enhance the historical after the end of apartheid and and emerging African it most obviously shows a condition.” new vision of SA in its use of traditional African detailing. Indeed, the whole building is informed by traditional African forms, using a central courtyard, which recalls both Berlin’s courtyards and the central kraal (corral) of a South African village. His other work of particular note is the 10 x 10 Housing Project in Cape Town that low-cost, low-complexity design borrows elements from the wattle-and-daub construction traditionally found in southern African settlements, and requires little skill to construct, no electricity on site and as few as six labourers. He has also designed schools in Khayelitsha and his Ellis Park Sports Centre is a centerpiece of the redevelopment of the rundown Ellis Park area of Johannesburg.
David Adjaye – Adjaye Associates Tanzanian-born and London-raised, Adjaye has made his name in the northern hemisphere, but has become prominent in the drive for Africa to be taken seriously as a place of architectural innovation. He has offices “I’m bored of the in Accra, New York and London and has spent 11 simplification years visiting each African capital to research and of Africa- the publish a book that divides Africa into areas based on climate and culture, rather than the national reduction of the borders drawn up by colonists in the 19th and continent down to a 20th century. It hasn’t happened yet, but designer Olalekan Jeyifous has imagined a series of shanty town towers in Nigeria’s major city of Lagos, the fastest growing city in Africa. He has created what could be called a dystopian architectural vision to highlight the terrible living standards in the poorest part of the city. A shanty town is typically an improvised housing development on the outskirt of a city. These areas often have no access to basic infrastructure, including clean drinking water, electricity and waste disposal.
Olalekan Jeyifous has imagined a series of shanty town towers in Nigeria’s major city of Lagos
Jeyifous’s ‘Shanty Megastructures’ transforms the fragile, shanty dwellings where a significant sector of the lagos population live into sleek, high rise towers and placed them in the heart of the city’s business and commercial district. The architect, who is Nigerian-born but based in New York, decided that placing the twoers in the city centre would do more to highlight the deprivation that so many Nigerians have to bear in the shanty twon areas of the city.
In an interview with Dezeen, Jeyifous said: “These images juxtapose sites of privileged and much coveted real-estate throughout Lagos, Nigeria, with colossal vertical settlements representing marginalised and impoverished communities.” He added, “The dispossessed are given prominence and visibility, albeit through a somewhat dystopian vision, which highlights that these communities often suffer from a lack of appropriate sanitation, electricity, medical services, and modern communications.” The images he has created of his visionary vertical city, feature almost futuristic cylindrical towers constructed from a veritable patchwork of materials, including corrugated metal and sheets of plastic, materials that any shantytown dweller will already be familiar with, although perhaps not in quite the same way as Jeyifous employs them. But, clearly he is making a political point by using them, as well as maintaining a link between old and new through design. His towers are linked by a network of looping walkways suspended above ground, which create an effect that lies somewhere between rollercoaster and
space station. The walkways are raised by necessity, as the city centre traffic in Lagos is almost permanently, one gigantic traffic jam. They are also planted with greenery with waterways running below to introduce elements of nature into the concrete heart of the city. Lagos’ shanty town is located in the Makoko district, which is on a lagoon on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. Part of the town has been destroyed by the government to make space for private sector developments, which is another issue that Jeyifous wanted to raise with his elaborate vision of these vertical living solutions. Perhaps one day they will become a reality for Lagos’ shanty town dwellers.

Living La Vida Luxury in
SOTOGRANDE IT IS FAIRLY TRUE TO SAY THAT WHEN PEOPLE TALK ABOUT LUXURY LIVING ON THE COSTA DEL SOL, SOTOGRANDE WILL BE AMONGST THE PRIME EXAMPLES OF WHAT THE COAST HAS TO OFFER. SOTOGRANDE HAS DEVELOPED A REPUTATION FOR BEING MORE DISCREET IN ITS DISPLAYS OF WEALTH AND ITS RESIDENTS, MANY OF WHOM ARE HIGH NET WORTH INDIVIDUALS, PREFER TO STAY OUT OF THE LIMELIGHT, IN COMPARISON WITH MARBELLA WHERE THE OPPOSITE IS TRUE. It has been described as Spain’s ‘millionaire’s playground’, and it was initially purpose-built for a cosmopolitan, moneyed crowd who wanted the added bonuses of 24-hour security, designer boutiques and top end restaurants, but nobody here wants to shout about the fabulous facilities, nor do they feel the need to parade the streets in supercars. Privacy and tranquillity are two of Sotogrande’s most-prized characteristics. Its wide, leafy avenues, its polo fields, the marina and its magnificent mansions may sound like Sotogrande likes to show off, but that is far from the truth and its sense of decorum is what attracts royalty, celebrities and the super rich to live here. UTOPIA - 94
Sailing taken seriously The marina is beautiful but not ostentatious. It is filled with yachts, but unlike some other marinas on the coast, sailing is taken quite seriously in Soto, the diminutive used by residents for the area, and there are sailing courses for all ages available here, run by internationally recognised organisations. Sotogrande also hosts international sail racing championships, attracting major names from the sport.
Top Golf Courses Indeed, sport is central to the Sotogrande lifestyle. The private development boasts three highly regarded clubs, including El Real Club de Golf designed by Robert Trent Jones, Valderrama, which has hosted the Ryder Cup and Volvo Masters and La Reserva Club de Golf, which is the newest and most modern and voted one of the top three in Spain. It offers a challenging 18-hole course and one of the most spectacular clubhouses in Sotogrande. It is also perfectly located so that golfers and guests can enjoy the fantastic views of both mountains and the Mediterranean.
The polo set Of course, polo is the other sport that sets Sotogrande apart from the rest of the coast. During the polo season, the world’s best polo players arrive for the

Gold Cup championship with their strings of polo ponies and as it is a sport favoured by royalty, you can expect to see a number of the titled aristocracy as well as princes and kings spend time here during the summer tournaments.
Luxury living Sotogrande’s properties also set it apart. The building of the enclave started back in 1962 and Sotogrande now has a range of exclusive properties in a range of styles, from the more traditional Andalucian to the current penchant for the geometric lines of the contemporary. Luxury Sotogrande is a premier real estate with a rental and sales portfolio of the types of high-end villas and mansions. Bristow Property Group also has a selection of superior residences for sale and rent. SEVEN
SOTOGRANDE IS INTERNATIONALLY RENOWNED FOR ITS MANY SPLENDID HOMES. HOWEVER, THE STAKES HAVE JUST BEEN RAISED IN THE SOTOGRANDE RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY MARKET WITH THE ARRIVAL OF THE SEVEN, A TRULY EXCLUSIVE VILLA COMMUNITY IN LA RESERVA CLUB DE SOTOGRANDE. La Reserva Club is a luxurious residential area with views overlooking the beautiful green fairways of La Reserva Golf de Club, voted one of Spain top three courses, and stretching all the way down to the sparkling Mediterranean. Residents enjoy the tranquillity of a countryside ambience, yet they are only minutes away from Sotogrande’s marina, shops and restaurants, as well as the areas other amenities, such as the International School and an array of top class medical facilities. The Seven is a new private community of just seven ultra-luxury villas, each one designed by a different leading international architect and set in landscaping created by famous landscape designer, Jean Mus. The landscaping will set the tone for a lifestyle that is one of the most privileged and exclusive in southern Spain. Marc Topiol, CEO of Sotogrande SA, has told the press that the company has been considering the future development of Sotogrande and came to the conclusion that the answer to the question should come from looking at Sotogrande’s legacy historically. He said, “When you look at the history of Sotogrande, everything revolves around exclusivity and quality.” The Seven community is certain to meet this requirement and exceed it, when you study its specifications.
UTOPIA - 96
Each property will have a surface area of between 1,800 m2 and 2,400 m2, with the master bedroom measuring more than 120 m2. This is equivalent to the size of some two-bed apartments. Every villa will come equipped with everything the high net worth individual could wish for: extensive indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a cinema and gym, a private spa, leading edge technology, staff quarters among many other elements. And, for a monthly fee, owners can really sit back and relax, as Marc Topiol revealed: “We will take care of everything. From paying bills to maintaining the garden and the home, preparing the home in advance of arrivals on request of the owner, daily room service, chef, pre-provisioning, cleaning, restaurant reservations, transport, it will be like living in a hotel.”
“We will take care of everything. From paying bills to maintaining the garden and the home, preparing the home in advance of arrivals on request of the owner, daily room service, chef, pre-provisioning, cleaning, restaurant reservations, transport, it will be like living in a hotel.”
The villas will have a contemporary architectural style, and open-plan spaces that seamlessly connect and flow into each other to create a variety of spaces, from large rooms to intimate living areas. The interiors all provide exceptional views and also merge with the villas’ sensational outdoor lifestyle terraces, pools and entertainment areas. The exterior appearance of each villa embraces the contemporary passion for geometric lines, yet they all harmonise with the curves and undulations of the natural surroundings in a way that is timeless and elegant.
“The villas are interpretations of each architect’s vision of the family home as a personal journey. They will be a place for comfort, serenity, balance, protection and joy, freedom and adventure.”
