HOMAGE TO THE
CATALÁN MAN ANTONI GAUDI IS AN ARCHITECT PRIMARILY REMEMBERED FOR HIS OUTSTANDING WORK IN BARCELONA, A CITY THAT CELEBRATES HIS LEGACY IN BUILDINGS AND SPIRIT.
UTOPIA - 10
Antoni Gaudi was born in Reus outside Tarragona in 1852. As a child he suffered from rheumatoid arthritis and his mother took him on trips into the countryside, because she believed the fresh air and exercise would help him fight his condition. It was during the trips that the young Gaudi discovered a love of Nature and admiration for the elegance of natural forms. After finishing secondary school in Barcelona, he went on to study at the Escola Tècnica Superior d'Arquitectura de Barcelona. He graduated in 1878 and landed his first contract in the same year - a series of iron-laden lampposts that still stand in the Gothic Quarter's Plaza Real. He also made a good friend in Eusebio Güell, a wealthy businessman who became Gaudi’s biggest benefactor and supporter. Gaudí's career took off in quite a spectacular way shortly after graduating. During a span of about 10 years, he designed a variety of structures, from a palace pavilion specifically built for a king to a stable for one of Güell's properties. Gaudí's didn't become complacent as time passed. He designed buildings in Barcelona and beyond, completing La Pedrera and Casa Batlló before starting on a series of new buildings for Eusebi Güell. In 1914 he started work on La Sagrada Familia, a project that consumed him until his untimely death in 1926. He took no payments for this work, instead he saw it as a service to the Church. The Sagrada Familia is in many ways a key example of Gaudí's growth as an architect and artist. The church’s intricate design and overall majesty represent the climax of the Catalán genius' maturity and creativity. What we can see intertwined amid the spectacular columns, colours and forms of the church is the influence of the natural world which Gaudí fell in love with as a child. Unfortunately, he would never see its completion; one day as he was walking through Barcelona’s streets, he crossed the road without looking and was hit by a tram. He died two days later in a hospital for the poor and his body was laid to rest in a crypt at the Sagrada Familia. Where else would you bury the architect who drew so much inspiration for his church through the natural settings of his beloved Catalonia.

SOME OF GAUDI’S OUTSTANDING WORKS PARK GÜELL
This park gives you an outstanding view of the city. It covers 15 hectares and Eusebio Güell bought the plot in 1899 with the idea of creating a “Garden City,” a concept that had was gaining ground across Europe at the time. It was to have a residential development, primarily designed for the affluent, with an open market, roads, and other amenities. Güell commissioned Gaudi to build this "Garden City" and he worked on the project from 1900 to 1914, when it was unfortunately abandoned owing to financial difficulties. Barcelona's City Council acquired the property in 1918 and in 1923, just three years before Antoni Gaudí's death, made it a public park. In 1984, UNESCO declared Park Güell a World Heritage Site. The park offers an unrivalled location for viewing the use of mosaics. A mosaic covered dragon greets you at its entrance and from there you follow a staircase that gives way to a space called the "Nature Square." It is here that classic columns support a ceiling covered in soothing taupe mosaic with bursts of coloured discs featuring bright blues. The trees in the most northerly area of the park create a feeling of being in the countryside and Gaudi actually lived here in a model of the homes that were planned for the wealthy citizens of the city.

CASA BATLLÓ
Standing in the heart of Barcelona’s most fashionable shopping street, Paseo de Gracia is Casa Battló. Josep Battló commissioned the design in 1903. He wanted Gaudi to renovate it with a level of flair that would set the home apart from every other residence in the neighbourhood. Gaudí did just that, implementing his unique style in nearly every facet of the home. He renovated the home over the course of two years, completing his work in 1906. Renovations of different parts of the house took place in thein the latter decades of the twentieth century and in 2005, UNESCO designated Casa Batlló a World Heritage Site.

LA PEDRERA
This unique apartment is also known as Casa Milá. Pere Milá i Camps commissioned Gaudí to build La Pedrera, which turned out to be one of the few projects which Gaudí built from design to completion. Construction took place for 1906 to 1912. La Pedrera did not wear time well. By the 1980's, her beauty was but a memory. The façade of La Pedrera was covered in dull, brown paint. In 1984, UNESCO proclaimed the building a World Heritage Site. This stroke of fortune meant a bright future for Gaudí's jewel and millions of people visit the restored building on the Paseo de Gracia every year. From an architectural perspective, it is fascinating, because the building uses internal courtyards to provide light for each apartment and instead of the widely popular load-bearing walls used by most buildings, Gaudí designed Casa Milá with load-bearing columns. This revolutionary, "open floor plan" design allowed walls to be placed as needed. These buildings, alongside La Sagrada Famila (see this issue’s Landmark Building) have made Gaudi and Barcelona inextricably connected – it is impossible to think of one without the other. Barcelona continues to pay homage to the man from Catalonia, for whom the city was the centre of his world.

La Fábrica
THE CEMENT HOUSE IN 1973, SPANISH ARCHITECT RICARDO BOFILL PURCHASED A CEMENT FACTORY IN SANT JUST DESVERN, NEAR BARCELONA. THE BUILDING DATED FROM THE FIRST WORLD WAR ERA, BUT THE ARCHITECT SAW ITS POTENTIAL TO BECOME HIS PERSONAL HOME.
BEFORE WHEN RICARDO BOFILL STUMBLED UPON THE RUNDOWN CEMENT FACTORY IN 1973, HE IMMEDIATELY SAW A WORLD OF POSSIBILITIES AND ALMOST 45 YEARS LATER, THE STRUCTURE HAS BEEN COMPLETELY TRANSFORMED INTO A SPECTACULAR AND UNIQUE HOME. The factory had long been closed by the time Bofill discovered it and it required a lot of repair work when Ricardo Bofill and his team purchased it. After years of partial deconstruction, the visionary architect proceeded to plant the exterior of the property with vegetation, and furnish the interior as a modern living and work space. La fábrica is a work in progress to this day, to which Bofill likens his own life, as his visions for the future continue to change shape. The industrial chimneys that once filled the air with smoke now overflow with lush greenery, a fine example of a beautiful transformation emerging This is a fine from creative thinking. example of

a beautiful transformation emerging from creative thinking.
“The construction work, which began with partial destruction with dynamite and jack hammers, lasted for more than a year and a half. It was a precision job, which consisted in revealing the hidden forms and recovering certain spaces, comparable to the work of the sculptor whose first task is to confront the material. The silos were full of cement and it was impossible to penetrate the spaces entirely saturated with dust. The following phase was the greening and planting. It was
necessary to provide a green plinth to these volumes; plants would climb walls and hang from the roofs. The last phase was the annulment of functionalism: we had to give the factory new structures and different uses, invent a new program. Various spaces became visible: The Cathedral, the gardens, the silos. Later we had to differentiate the new constructions with a specific vocabulary, which integrates various languages from the History of Architecture in opposition to vernacular architecture. We imagined windows, doors, stairs and false perspectives, and applied them to the exterior walls and some of the interiors. Slowly, with the valuable help of Catalan craftsmen, the Cement Factory was transformed, but it will always remain an unfinished work.”
It was necessary to provide a green plinth to these volumes; plants would climb walls and hang from the roofs.
THE DETAILS With its green exteriors and rooftops, this home has travelled some distance from its original use. Each room has its own specific purpose and no two rooms are alike. Bofill says: “I have the impression of living in a closed universe, which protects me from the outside and everyday life.” He adds: “Life goes on here in a continuous sequence with very little difference between work and leisure.” The property’s indoor and outdoor leisure spots include a minimalist piano room, and his workspace has the feel of a modern monk’s cell. Exterior areas are covered with grass, but are also planted with trees of the palm, eucalyptus and olive varieties that are a quintessential element of Spain. The kitchendining room on the ground floor is a family meeting point and has a feel of resonant of the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. It is a never-ending project and viewed as whole, the building resembles a “mysterious and romantic ruin that is unique and unrepeatable.” Bofill compares the project to his life and its constant evolution and says that with enough creative thinking, any space can become something new and beautiful. La Fábrica proves this to be true.

LA SAGRADA FAMILIA BARCELONA This phenomenal construction by Antoni Gaudi, who is our profiled architect in this issue, is one of the most outstanding landmarks in the city that is most closely associated with the Catalán architect. It is a project that he worked on for 43 years before his death in 1926, concentrating only on this cathedral and forsaking all other design work from 1914. He is buried in the Lady of Mount Carmel crypt in La Sagrada Familia. ABOUT LA SAGRADA FAMILIA Five generations have witnessed the construction of this building, which is still not complete, although it is estimated that all architectural work will be finished by 2026. EARLY DAYS The beginnings of the Expiatory Temple of the Holy Family, known as the Sagrada Familia, go back to 1866 when Josep Maria Bocabella i Verdaguer founded the Spiritual Association of Devotees of Saint Joseph, which campaigned for the construction of an expiatory temple dedicated to the Holy Family. In 1881, thanks to donations, the Association purchased a 12,800m² plot of land, located between the streets of Marina, Provença, Sardenya, and Mallorca, to build the temple on. The first stone was laid on St Joseph’s day, 19 March, 1882, in a ceremony presided over by the Bishop of Barcelona, Josep Urquinaona. It signalled the start of construction following the Neo-gothic design drawn up by the architect Francisco de Paula del Villar y Lozano, the Sagrada Familia’s first architect. After a short while, due to disagreements with the promotors, he resigned from the post of chief architect and Antoni Gaudí took over.

GAUDI TAKES OVER 1883 – 1926 After taking over the project in 1883, Gaudí continued work on the crypt, which was finished in 1889. After receiving a substantial anonymous donation, Gaudí proposed a new and grander design. He proposed abandoning the old Neogothic plan in favour of a design that was more monumental and innovative, both in regard to the form and structure as well as the construction. Gaudí’s design consisted of a large church with a floor plan based on a Latin cross and soaring towers. It was to be immensely symbolic, both architecturally and sculpturally, and convey the teachings of the Gospels and the Christian church. In 1892 the foundations for the Nativity facade were started. This facade was built first because, as Gaudí himself put it, “If, instead of building this decorated, richly ornamented facade, we had started with the hard, bare and skeletal Passion facade, people would have rejected it.” In 1894 the apse facade was finished, and the Rosary portal, one of the entrances to the cloister on the Nativity side, was finished in 1899. In 1909 Gaudí built provisional school buildings for children of Sagrada Familia workers and local children on the south-west corner of the site. In the following year a model of the Nativity facade was displayed at the Grand Palais in Paris in an exhibition featuring Gaudí’s work organised by his friend and patron Eusebio Güell. From 1914, Gaudí decided to concentrate exclusively on the construction of the Expiatory Temple of the Sagrada Familia. He became so involved that he lived his final months in his studio workshop; a space located next to the apse used for producing scale models, drawings and designs, sculptures and for taking photographs, amongst other activities. In 1923 he produced the final design for the naves and roofs. Construction work however progressed slowly. The first bell tower on the Nativity facade, 100 metres high and dedicated to Saint Barnabas, was finished on 30 November 1925. This was the only tower Gaudí saw completed. On 10 June 1926 he died as a result of injuries sustained three days earlier when he was tragically knocked down by a tram. Over all these years a sizable group of architects, draughtsmen, sculptors and modellers collaborated with Gaudí on the construction.

In 2010. La Sagrada Familia reached a milestone in its history when His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI consecrated it as a place of worship. IN THE 21ST CENTURY Gaudí and his work were celebrated in 2002, with the Barcelona City Council sponsoring International Gaudí Year to mark the 150th anniversary of his birth. The Expiatory Temple of the Sagrada Familia participated with various initiatives, including the restoration, relocation and opening of the Sagrada Familia schools building. Other artists of note who have contributed to finishing the church are Joan Vila-Grau who designed the stained glass window in the Passion facade and Japanese sculptor Etsuro Sotoo, who made the Eucharistic symbols for bread and wine in the central nave and Josep Maria Subirachs, who completed the wall of the Patriarchs and Prophets as envisioned by Gaudi. In 2010. La Sagrada Familia reached a milestone in its history when His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI consecrated it as a place of worship. It is amazing that 127 years passed after Gaudi started work on this exceptional building before it finally became a ‘working church’.

He considers Portugal to be “sophisticated and elegant” and believes that extraordinary things are made here, things that people from Spain are not aware of. He carefully selected Portuguese historic and significant materials, like cork, blue tiles and pink marble, so that he would be able to reflect perfectly the Portuguese culture and the kind of furniture that is being made in Portugal. The rich handcrafted Portuguese tradition walks hand in hand with modern design in Pepe Leal´s creation. The display put together various atmospheres, which provided a greater chance to show a wider variety of products. PROJECT Bound by land and sea, floating effortlessly above both, Eighty Seven Park is a private, luxury beachfront condominium designed to seamlessly embrace the park and ocean on the cusp of Miami Beach and Surfside. The landmark building will bring together architecture, design and the natural landscape. For Renzo Piano, Pritzker Prize-winning architect, there’s a serenity to be found in the tension between sky and earth -- a serenity that Eighty Seven Park captures so eloquently. The vision is to create a coastal sanctuary that enhances the green space in the area of North Shore Park in the City of Miami Beach, by extending the green area to 87th Terrace at the northern limit of the project site. This design approach will add significant value to the Park, to the surrounding neighborhood and to the City of Miami Beach, creating uninterrupted views over the park towards south beach. The simple motif belies the intricate attention to detail, the belief in perfecting every element of its design and construction. Developed in close collaboration with the Renzo Piano Building Workshop, and with RDAI in Paris and West 8 in Rotterdam, Eighty Seven Park blurs the line between imagination and craftsmanship.

Tokyos TOP 10 BUILDINGS
TOKYO HAS A WEALTH OF ASTOUNDING BUILDINGS AND IT IS DIFFICULT TO SELECT JUST A FEW OUTSTANDING ONES. THESE WERE SELECTED BY ASHLEY RAWLINGS OF ART SPACE TOKYO – A GUIDE TO THE CITY’S MOST ARCHITECTURALLY DISTINCTIVE MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES
ST. MARY’S CATHEDRAL It might seem rather odd to find a cathedral in the land of Buddhism and Shinto, but Kenzo Tange’s 1964 stainless steel construction is a “soaring vision of abstraction.” Observed from the air, the roof forms a cross of glass and it has an equally impressive interior with illuminated, sloping walls.
UTOPIA - 58
PRADA FLAGSHIP STORE When you’re shopping for fashion in Tokyo, you head for Omotesando boulevard. It is lined with impressive architecture, but few buildings are quit as grand as the Prada store. It was built in 2003 by Herzog and DeMeuron, the same architects who created the Beijing Olympics ‘bird’s nest’ stadium and the Tate Modern extension. The Prada store is an irregular construction of green, diamond-shaped glass panels with a white-carpeted interior and curved plastic walls.
YUZO SAEKI’S HOUSE It is not unusual to find that an artist’s house is amongst a city’s more unusual buildings. Yuzo Saeki (18981928) was an early adopter of westernstyle oil painting and followed the Fauvists in Paris. His house-studio in Mejiro is a small wooden construction that is similar in appearance to early American church buildings. It has three doors, unevenly aligned and enormous glass windows at one side to allow in extra light. It has been a museum for Saeki’s work since 2010.
FUMIKO HAYASHI MEMORIAL HALL Finding traditional architecture in Tokyo can be a challenge due to the firebombing of the city in 1945. However, this beautiful example of an Edo-period home, built by novelist Fumiko Hayashi in 1941 is now a museum where you can view artefacts from her life and work, as well as enjoy the serenity of the gardens where she wrote her most famous works.
UTOPIA - 59
REVERSIBLE DESTINY LOFTS These amazing spaces are the brainwave of architects Shusaku Arakawa and Madeleine Gins who wrote that “lopsided, physically challenging spaces would awaken residents' instincts and allow them to live better, longer – even forever.” You’ll find them the brightly coloured apartments in the Tokyo suburb of Mitaka complete with uneven floors, awkward to reach switches and no cupboards.
UTOPIA - 60
SONORIUM
Jun Aoki’s concert hall is a lopsided edifice rising up behind a residential street in Eifukucho. The intimate space is a serene place to be on an overcast day: its sloping walls are punctuated by two rectangular windows, which become gleaming expanses of bright white. Aoki is known as an artist as much as an architect and has succeeded in creating a building that feels like “a three-dimensional work of minimalist geometric abstraction.”
NAKAGIN CAPSULE TOWER
It may look like a stack of washing machines or tumble dryers, but this 1972 construction, designed by Kisho Kurokawa is a landmark building of the post-war Metabolist movement. The capsules were originally designed for single businessmen, and each unit contains a built-in shower, bed, TV and phone. Sadly, the building fell into a state of disrepair and has been demolished. However, you can see from the photos that it ushered in the thinking that has allowed Tokyo to find innovative solutions for its growing population.
UTOPIA - 61
21_21 DESIGN SIGHT Situated in the park behind the high-end Tokyo Midtown shopping centre, two sleek, triangular shards of concrete and glass rise from the ground. 21_21 Design Sight is a signature work by Tadao Ando, and Japan's first design museum. Unnbelievably, at least 70% of the museum is underground, but thanks to expert lighting and a large light well, it feels like daylight.
UTOPIA - 62
GOLDEN GAI BAR DISTRICT This gloriously ramshackle collection of 200+ bars in the Shinjuku district is allegedly the inspiration for Ridley Scott’s “Bladerunner” film. In the 1950s it was a den of vice -- remember the 1968 film directed by Nagisa Oshima, Diary of a Shinjuku Thief? –but later became a hangout for artists and intellectuals, rather like London’s Soho. Each bar has its own theme, ranging from photography to horse racing and visitors might get served, although owners prefer to keep to local clientele.
REIYUKAI SHAKADEN TEMPLE This imposing building, with its ultra-modern looks was actually built in 1925 for a Buddhist lay sect and features a giant Buddha statue and vast meditation room. The pyramid shape is clad in black granite crowned by rings of gold. Visitors can experience its unusual red-felt-lined elevators and Japanese lessons are free here.

JapanS LEADING ARCHITECTS
JAPAN HAS A SPECIAL AESTHETIC, WHICH IS UNLIKE THAT OF ANY OTHER CULTURE. SOME OF IT IS BIZARRE, QUIRKY OR PLAYFUL; HELLO KITTY AND MANGA COMICS AND FILMS BEING TWO EXAMPLES OF THAT ASPECT OF JAPANESE TASTE. AND THEN THERE IS THE REFINED SENSIBILITY OF THE JAPANESE INTERIOR, WITH ITS SLIDING SCREENS, TATAMI MATTING AND A SENSE THAT MINIMALISM IS THE ULTIMATE IN GOOD TASTE. Japan’s architects have made an impression for some time and if their names are not as familiar to us as those masters of building design from the western hemisphere, these profiles of 10 of its top architects and their landmark buildings should help to correct that.
Ryue Nishizawa Born in 1966, Ryue Nishizawa is a Tokyo-based architect and director of his own firm called Office of Ryue Nishizawa. He is also a co-founder of the SANAA company with his colleague Kazuyo Sejima. Together with Sejima, in 2010 he became the youngest recipient of the Pritzker Prize. Ryue Nishizawa is a graduate of the Yokohama National University where he got his Master’s degree in architecture in 1990. Among his creations are the Towada Art Cente, Teshima Art Museum and the Funabashi Apartment Building. UTOPIA - 66
Tadao Ando Born in 1941, Tadao Ando is one of the leaders in contemporary architecture and he has received numerous architecture prizes and awards. He is credited with designing some of Japan’s most famous buildings, yet he has had no formal architectural training. In fact, he started out as a boxer before attending classes in drawing and interior design. His signature style is wellknown for the creative use of natural light, structures that follow natural forms of the landscape and the clever use of concrete. His best creations are Asia Museum of Modern Art, Punta della Dogana in Italy, the Langen Foundation in Germany and The Church of Light in Osaka.
Takaharu Tezuka Takaharu Tezuka and his wife Yui Tezuka founded the Tokyo-based firm Tezuka Architects. He studied architecture at the Musashi Institute of Technology and the University of Pennsylvania. Most of his notable works are a collaboration with his wife and centre on human activity and connectivity.
Shigeru Ban Shigeru Ban is best known for his work with paper and his innovative use of recycled cardboard. Time magazine has portrayed him as one of the 21st-century’s innovators in the field of architecture and design. In 2014, Ban received the prestigious Pritzker prize.
He is considered one of the most famous modern architects in Japan
Tezuka was winner of the Japan Institute of Architects Prize in 2009 and the Association for Children’s Environment Design Award for 2011, and he is considered one of the most famous modern architects in Japan. Projects by Tezuka Architects include the Roof House, Echigo-Matsunoyama Museum of Natural Science, Fuji Kindergarten and Woods of Net.
His work is based on the theme of the “invisible structure”. This means that he does not overly express his structural elements, but rather chooses to incorporate them into the design. Ban’s name became widely recognised after his Nepal project in 2015, which was created in order to help the victims of the Nepal earthquake. Some of his most famous works include the Cardboard Cathedral in New Zealand, Aspen Art Museum in the USA and Centre Pompidou-Metz Museum in France.
UTOPIA - 67
Akiyoshi Takagi Akiyoshi Takagi was born in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan in 1974. He gained a Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Architecture from the Yokohama National University. In 2006 he established his firm, Akiyoshi Takagi Architects which he later renamed to Akiyoshi Takagi & Associates. Takagi is the winner of the Tokyo Architecture Award, the AR Awards (UK) and Good Design Awards (Japan). His most famous buildings are the Tanaka Clinic, Tsui No Samika and the NE apartment on which he collaborated with Yuji Nakae.
YUJI NAKAE Yuji Nakae is the CEO of Nakae Architects Inc. He has a Master’s degree in Architecture from the Yokohama National University. Nakae established his own company in 2004 and became one of the most successful young Japanese architects. Since 2008 he has won the Good Design Award (Japan), Tokyo Architecture Award and Seoul Architecture Award. Nakae’s most notable buildings include Salon de thé Lausanne, TSI headquarters and the NE apartment.
UTOPIA - 68
Yasuhiro Yamashita Yasuhiro Yamashita was born in 1960 and received his Master’s degree in Architecture from the Shibaura Institute of Technology in 1986. In 1991 he established the Yamashita Kai Architectural Office which he later renamed Atelier Tekuto. Currently, Yamashita is a lecturer at Kyushu University. He explains that most of the work he does is created on the move – on the train to the place he’s currently developing. His style is unique for the lack of computer-generated content – he usually uses hand- drawn sketches and line drawings.
Kengo Kuma Kengo Kuma is an architect and professor at the Graduate School of Architecture at the University of Tokyo. He graduated with a degree in Architecture from the University of Tokyo in 1979 and since 1990 has worked for his own company, Kengo Kuma & Associates. It is Kuma’s use of technological advancements and innovative use of materials that make his designs popular. He manages to give stone, for example, the same sense of lightness and softness as glass or wood. Kuma’s goal is “to recover the tradition of Japanese buildings and to reinterpret these traditions for the 21st century”.
UTOPIA - 69
Toyo Ito Toyo Ito was born in 1941 and is known for creating conceptual architecture that expresses both physical and virtual worlds. He has been named as one of the world’s most innovative and influential architects and was awarded the Pritzker Prize in 2013.
He was born in Korea but his parents moved to Japan, where he has lived since he was two years old. Among his most notable works is the Serpentine Gallery in London, the Mikimoto Ginza 2 in Tokyo and the World Games Stadium in Taiwan.
Junya Ishigama Jun’ya Ishigami is a modern Japanese architect with a Master’s degree in Architecture and Planning from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. Ishigami worked with Kazuyo Sejima from 2000 to 2004 at SANAA, before establishing his own firm in 2004. In 2009, he became the youngest ever recipient of the Architectural Institute of Japan Prize for the Kanagawa Institute of Technology KAIT Workshop. In 2010, he won the Golden Lion for Best Project at the 12th Venice Architecture Biennale and became an associate professor at Tohoku University in Japan.

KOI
THE COLLECTION INSPIRED IN THE JAPANESE CULTURE
NOWADAYS, PEOPLE HAVE STARTED TO CONSIDER THE MODERN-DAY BATHROOM A “RETREAT” AND A PLACE IN WHICH YOU CAN RELAX AFTER A LONG DAY. HOMEOWNERS ARE TAKING NOTES ON PRODUCTS AND FEATURES THAT STRIKE THEIR FANCY, MAKING EVERY DETAIL A POTENTIAL ITEM FOR THE BATHROOM WISH LIST. The biggest transformation has been in what the modern bathroom is made of, such is the demand for luxury bathrooms. Spacious bathrooms master suites with features materials and finishes that enhance the overall look of the space are almost standard in today’s upscale homes.
UTOPIA - 74
Designers are seeking even more new ways to add comfort and value to the bathroom and that’s why the KOI Collection will add a lot of personality to any bathroom. The KOI Collection was inspired in the KOI carp, which is a recurring symbol of Japanese culture, highly appreciated for its decorative purposes, not only in water gardens but also in Irezumi practice or, most commonly, in tattoos. Our designer Joaquim Paulo says: “The aim of the KOI Collection is to deliver high-end products for very exclusive and luxury bathrooms and to extremely discerning clients.”
The KOI scales that compose the panels of the bathtub shine and reflect – on its brass surface – the sun caught throughout the clear water. KOI and the Japanese word for love or affection are homophones, making the carp also a symbol of love and friendship. The same scale motif is used for the washbasins. MAISON VALENTINA is a new luxury bathroom brand that provides a collection capable of making your projects excel, with high-end solutions in bathtubs, washbasins and free standing washbasins, mirrors, lighting, case goods and other products made with the finest selection of materials, such as brass, marble, wood, glass, combined with rare hand-made techniques and contemporary design. Our main goal is to offer the same comfort and luxury that you are able feel in other parts of the house, and maintaining the most exclusive designs and boldest pieces. Get inspired with our luxury bathroom ideas for the modern home! maisonvalentina.net

“Our vision was to create a welcoming interior and it was all about making it spacious, light, fresh and in harmony with the great seaviews the property had to offer.”
BEFORE
BEFORE
Marbella Apartment Ambience was commissioned to design, refurbish and furnish a 3-bedroom, frontline beach apartment in Marbella. The apartment was very rundown, dated and dark. Our vision was to create a welcoming interior and it was all about making it spacious, light, fresh and in harmony with the great seaviews the property had to offer. A very important factor for our client was to have all the benefits of modern materials and latest technology of a smart home, but with a warm shabby-chic style for the furniture. We stripped all floors, old wall tiles and moldings, and opened up the kitchen and dining area into an open plan space with the lounge. We installed underfloor heating and sourced a beautiful barn-wood floor from Holland for throughout the apartment. To give the space a contemporary look, we built false ceilings with indirect lighting, and added lower recessed wall lights for a romantic effect. This immediately changed the aesthetics of the outdated space. In the kitchen, the beatiful honey-comb-shape floor tiles cut impeccably into the barn wood floor coming from the lounge, and became the landing space for the stunning kitchen, which we had installed by Clive Christian. One of our client’s wishes was to incorporate a sauna into one of the bathrooms, which was a nice challenge due to the small space we had to work with. By rearranging the existing layout and taking out the bath, we were able to meet our client’s wishes and install a fully functioning sauna. Bespoke carpentry was used throughout the apartment, and natural wallpapers and fresh feel fabrics were the materials chosen to give the ambient a fresh feel. UTOPIA - 91
Villa, La Perla Blanca La Perla Blanca, a striking 12-bedroom property with over 2000mďż˝ living space and situated on the frontline beach is currently for sale. Ambience was not only hired to completely furnish this beauty, but to also introduce some architectural features in the interiors such as wall claddings, vertical gardens, fireplace designs and an impressive bar on the roof-top terrace. A combination of bespoke furniture, intelligently combined with brands such as Baxter, Arketipo, Moroso, Galotti & Radice to name a few, were key factors in the outcome of this very special interior. Lago di Garda Apartment, Italy
A romantic setting with dream views to Lago Di Garda, is the location of this perfectly situated 3-bedroom apartment, now fully refurbished by Ambience. We created a feature for the entrance, by designing an L-Shaped wall and landing slab in beatuiful black marquina to contrast elegantly against the wood work and oak wood floors. We opened up the kitchen to the lounge and designed a dividing wall to one side of the room to take a built-in chimney. This kept the space open but at the same time created two ambiences. The dividing wall was also designed to hide the existing radiators that couldn’t be changed. Lighting effects were added to bring mood to some of the elements installed. The stark white kitchen with details in smoked walnut tone oak makes the kitchen one that is both modern and inviting.
The stark white kitchen with details in smoked walnut tone oak makes the kitchen one that is both modern and inviting. We went for a minimalist design with the carpentry and chose natural materials, such as natural warm woods tones, textured linen for some of the upholstery and to add a punch of colour, vibrant teal green leather and petrol blue velvet were our choice for the stunning Moroso armchair; tones that are also echoed in the eyecatching artwork. La Zagaleta Villa Sitting on a hilltop with spectacular seaviews over to Morocco, this beautiful 6-bedroom villa situated in La Zagaleta was finely furnished in an elegant and contemporary style. Smokey mirrors, high gloss Zebrano woods, aged brass, colourful artworks and a variety of luxurious fabrics were some of the elements used to give the space a touch of glamour. We used brands such as Arketipo, Poltrona Frau and Exteta amongst others. One of our favourite pieces was the 4-metre dining table in beautiful American walnut by Riva 1920.

Shade
A PLACE IN THE
Nikki Beach Marbella
ACOOLA NOT ONLY SPECIALISES IN COOL SHADES, IT IS ALSO BRINGING FURNITURE TO ITS CHIC BOUTIQUE SO THAT YOU CAN SIT IN THE SHADE IN STYLE. The motto of Didier Dewyn’s ACOOLA is “By Europeans, for Europeans, with a cool Belgian accent” although the slogan coined by his young son, “ACOOLA Matata” also perfectly captures what ACOOLA offers: welcoming shade and stylish looks that make it easy to enjoy the best of home life without any worries. Since Didier took over TipTopShade, a longstanding business on the coast, famed for its cutting edge awnings and sail shades, he has made significant changes including rebranding, opening a lavish showroom and offering stunning outdoor furniture to complement the modern shade, awning and parasol solutions the company has always been known for. He told us: “ACOOLA takes our business beyond just shade solutions. We also offer a wide number of heater, lighting and furniture items, to enable clients to purchase a complete look in which every single detail fits together.”
As Didier explained, ACOOLA does more than suggest an integrated approach to home comfort; it also suggests the hip, trendy inspirations behind the products and services offered by the company. And, the website domain (.eu instead of .com) highlights the fact that “ACOOLA is 100 per cent European,” something that is very important to this Belgian entrepreneur. The new showroom, which is conveniently located in the San Pedro polígono, demonstrates the perfect way to show clients the stunning high-end sail, awning, pergola, furniture and heating solutions from prestigious Belgian, Austrian and European firms. “Many of our clients are architects and interior designers, and at our showroom they can physically see inner components of our items and obtain inspiration,” Didier remarked. Indeed, nothing beats seeing the furniture and shade products in person; characteristics such as size, texture and style are always best appreciated by viewing them in a bespoke environment that highlights their top qualities. “Previously, in order for clients to see our items in person, the staff would accompany them to establishments such as the Puente Romano Beach Resort & Spa or the Ocean Club, where we have created and installed shade solutions. It is far more convenient for clients to head directly to our showroom.”
UTOPIA - 98
Didier is keen to point out that the ACOOLA showroom is so much more than a shop; in fact it is not really a shop at all, but more of an ‘atelier’ where customers can enjoy a private consultation. Because of its nature, Didier suggests that you always make an appointment first so that qualified staff are on hand to show the inner workings and operations of all the products in stock.
Furniture Fit for Outdoor Style Whilst shades and awnings are ACOOLA’S core business, the introduction of a luxury furniture line is expanding the business in an exciting way. What better way to develop the brand than by offering not just the shades, but also the perfect furniture to complement them and add more stylish touches to outdoor areas?
The addition of outdoor furniture to the showroom collection reflects Didier’s preference for “thinking in concepts.” He believes that everything should fit in a home and not be selected at random. That’s one reason that the company is the preferred supplier to many prestigious architects and interior designers on the coast; Didier understands how to come up with a complete outdoor solution that fits together like a jigsaw, with no pieces missing. The Extremis collection is a good example of the ultimate in contemporary styling and clients are guaranteed that if you have this furniture you will have created a unique look that others will want to follow. The geometric lines of the modular pieces that capture the essence of European design are one of a kind and a world away from the terrace and outdoor furniture styles that predominate. The other exclusive furniture brands stocked by ACOOLA, include Manutti and Ego Paris, not forgetting the wonderfully, and appropriately, named Mr Blue Sky floating loungers for the pool. You can take a siesta on one of these beauties without leaving the water.
“ACOOLA takes our business beyond And, Didier has gone even further and added heating and lighting to ACOOLA’s offering. There are designs from top just shade solutions. brands Heatsail, Ecosmartfire and Royal Botania Light We also offer a wide Collection that will bring warmth on cooler days and nights. Indoor lighting is known to create atmosphere, but the same number of heater, holds true for outdoors when darkness descends.
