MODERN

“A hundred times I have thought: New York is a catastrophe, and fifty times: it is a beautiful catastrophe.”

UTOPIA - 8

OVER THE PAST YEAR, UTOPIA HAS PROFILED A NUMBER OF FAMOUS, MODERN ARCHITECTS. ALMOST EVERY ONE OF THEM CITES THE SWISS ARCHITECT LE CORBUSIER AS AN INFLUENCE ON THEIR WORK, SO NOW WE PROFILE THE MAN HIMSELF. This highly polemical designer has arguably become the most influential urban planner and architect of the twentieth century. He was one of the key designers who formulated the ideas behind a truly modern, avant-garde architecture during the interwar period. Le Corbusier’s ideas about immense, rationalised, zoned, and industrially-constructed cities both shocked and seduced a global audience, and while they never came to fruition as a cohesive vision, his disciples put many of their pieces into place around the world, both during and after his lifetime. Over fifty years after his death, Le Corbusier still manages to exercise influence and arouse hatred for his ideas and buildings. His complex ties to politics and the sociological dimensions of architecture mean that he will continue to be the subject of debates for decades to come.

EARLY LIFE AND CAREER

of Switzerland. His father was a watch engraver and enameller and his mother taught music. They encouraged their son to study decorative arts in the hope that he would also become an engraver of watchcases. Jeanneret also frequently made trips with his father into the mountains around La-Chaux-deFonds, becoming intimately acquainted with nature and the environment. Jeanneret entered the Advanced Decorative Arts Course at the Art School in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1904, even though he would later (1951) tell the BBC that “I am anti-school. I left school at 13 because schools were very mean in the past; they were no fun.” The course on decoration there was taught by the painter Charles L’Eplattenier, who exerted a strong influence on the young man, encouraging him to study architecture. In 1905, in collaboration with Chapallaz and two other students, Jeanneret, then only 18, designed his first house, the Villa Fallet, a wooden mountain chalet with a steep roof and geometric patterning, for a member of the board of the Art School, the engraver Louis Fallet. In 1907 Jeanneret began his extensive travels, first encountering classical architecture on a visit to Italy. In the following years, he would visit many European cities, including Paris, where from 1908-10 he worked in the studio of architect Auguste Perret, a pioneer in the use of reinforced concrete. Jeanneret then moved on to Berlin, where between 1910-11 he worked in the office of Peter Behrens, arguably the most important architect in Germany at the time, whose great AEG Turbine Factory, is one of the seminal early works of modern architecture. There Jeanneret first met Gropius and Mies van der Rohe, both of whom were also employed by Behrens.

“I prefer drawing to talking. Drawing is faster, and leaves less room for lies.”

Charles Édouard-Jeanneret (later called Le Corbusier) was born on the 6th October 1887 in La Chaux-de-Fonds in the Jura mountains

“To be modern is not a fashion, it is a state. It is necessary to understand history, and he who understands history knows how to find continuity between that which was, that which is, and that which will be.”

A FROEBEL EDUCATION

Significantly, like Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Walter Gropius, two fellow originators of the International Style in architecture, Le Corbusier didn’t have any formal architectural training as such. Interestingly, like another architect in the International Style, Frank Lloyd Wright, he played with Froebel blocks as a child. The Froebel education system predates Montessori and Friedrich Froebel creatd the concept of the ‘Kindergarten’. The Froebel system also has the child’s creativity at the heart of its philosophy and artists including Paul Klee, Buckminster Fuller and Charles Eames are all advocates of the system, as was Albert Einstein. Le Corbusier’s six-decade career reshaped cities from South America to India. He built seventy five buildings in a dozen countries and worked on over four hundred architectural projects. He disseminated his ideas through his almost forty books and hundreds of published essays. This extensive practice, characterized by the “poetic and often provocative interpretation of

Architect, city planner, painter, furniture designer, writer, publisher, and amateur photographer and filmmaker, Le Corbusier introduced unconventional ideas that helped shape modern society. UTOPIA - 10

the technologies and values of the new machine age,” as architectural historian Kenneth Frampton puts it, established him as one of the most influential and controversial artists of the twentieth century. Many of Le Corbusier’s ideas, however, were too utopian to be put in practice, especially the ones reflecting his desire for control and order of society. Architect, city planner, painter, furniture designer, writer, publisher, and amateur photographer and filmmaker, Le Corbusier introduced unconventional ideas that helped shape modern society. As suggested by Kenneth Frampton “no single scholar has been able to master all the ramifications” of Le Corbusier’s creativity, not the least because Le Corbusier’s perspectives and interpretations of the world and its interaction with architecture often changed and remain difficult to pin down. Thus his work continues to be studied, criticised, and reinterpreted today, gaining new meanings and influencing generations to come.

KEY FACTS ABOUT LE CORBUSIER AND HIS WORK

* Le Corbusier was and remains a highly polemical figure in the history of modern architecture. Widely praised as a visionary whose imaginative plans for urban spaces dramatically transformed our understanding of what a city should be and could look like, he is equally reviled for the “soulless monotony” that his strand of modernism encouraged and the “wanton destruction” of the urban fabric that he both championed and prompted among his followers in urban planning during the latter half of the twentieth century.

* Le Corbusier is one of the major originators of the International Style along with such contemporaries as Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Walter Gropius. His work was featured especially prominently in the landmark exhibition in 1932 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York - and subsequent book - that gave the movement its name.

* Le Corbusier’s role in the birth of modern architecture is magnified because

of his ability to elucidate and disseminate his principles succinctly and forcefully. His Five Points of a New Architecture, which form the backbone

of his architectural thought of the 1920s, constitute some of the most direct set of ideas in architectural theory, which he successfully demonstrated in his numerous villas of the interwar period.

* Le Corbusier’s early writings and buildings glorified modernism and modernity

as the key to bringing society out of the cataclysm of World War I at the beginning of the 1920s, a time when many others shrank from the embrace of modern life. Indeed, his architecture and faith in technological progress and heavy industry helped create what many architectural historians would later call “the machine age.”

* Le

Corbusier’s political and ideological positions remain fraught with complexities and controversy - at times he could be labelled a capitalist, a communist, or a Fascist - and his copious inspirations and voluminous records and archival materials provide critics and scholars with a seemingly endless array of possible interpretations.

5 Buildings

Pavillon de L’Esprit Nouveau, Paris (1925) The Esprit Nouveau pavilion functioned as a manifesto of Le Corbusier’s ideas on modern architecture at the 1925 Exposition des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris. It illustrated his belief that industry, through the standardization required for mass-production, could create the buildings necessary for modern living. He aimed to show “the radical transformations and structural liberties reinforced concrete and steel allow us to envisage in urban housing” as well as to demonstrate that the “comfortable and elegant units of habitation, these practical machines for living in, could be agglomerated in long, lofty blocks of villa-flats.” These would form the primary housing units in his urban schemes, including the Contemporary City for Three Million Inhabitants and his Plan Voisin for Paris, underwritten, like the rest of the pavilion, by a prominent French automobile manufacturer.

Villa Savoye (1929-31)

The Villa Savoye was commissioned by an upper-class Parisian couple as a weekend house in Poissy, 19 miles away from Paris. Recognized as “one of the icons of modern European architecture,” the house influenced the coinage of the term “The International Style” and was prominently displayed in 1932 in MoMA’s seminal Modern Architecture: International Exhibition. The last of Le Corbusier’s 1920s-style houses, the Villa Savoye, fittingly, is considered the summation of his “Five Points of a New Architecture” elucidated in his treatise Vers une architecture (1923). The pilotis, or thin point-support columns, are arranged in a near-perfect grid that provides the architect almost complete freedom in the designs of both the floor plan and the facades - underscored by the fact that each of the four facades is different. The second floor, the main living space, is characterized by the ribbon windows that provide unencumbered views of the landscape - fostering the strong connection between nature and the constructed structure - and it is crowned by a roof terrace. The expansive lawn has the added effect of placing the building on prime display, as if it was intended to function as a demonstration or summation of the Five Points. UTOPIA - 12

Unité d’Habitation (1945-52) The Unité d’Habitation in Marseilles was the first large-scale housing block that Le Corbusier was given the chance to build. Its conception was a long time in the making, and can be traced back at least to the blocks of apartments he developed for his housing schemes of the 1930s, including those for Algiers and Nemours, Algeria. It was conceived to be built in multiple iterations, as part of a much larger urban redevelopment, such as those Le Corbusier hoped would be built for entirely devastated areas such as Saint-Die and La Rochelle after World War II. The single Unité, however, was the only piece of this vision that he would manage to carry out - though in several different locations in Europe. The Unité represents the most complete realization we have of Le Corbusier’s idea of communal housing, often described as a “city within a city.” The Unité also shows the evolution of Le Corbusier’s work with béton brut (rough concrete), wherein he left the material unfinished, with the imprint of the wood used to cast it clearly visible in its surface. This facet of the building’s skin not only connects it to the natural park-like surroundings littered with trees, but it gives the building an arguably more robust character, much like the hulk of a sailing ocean liner, to which it has often been compared (appropriate for Marseilles, France’s gateway port to the Mediterranean). Le Corbusier’s work with concrete here would influence many architects in the coming decades, culminating in the strand of design with the material called Brutalism, which coalesced in the 1970s.

Chapelle Notre-Dame-du-Haut (1950-55) In 1950, Le Corbusier was invited to design a new Catholic pilgrimage chapel in Ronchamp, a small French town in the Vosges Mountains near the Swiss border, to replace the one that had been destroyed during World War II. Perched on top of a hill, the church is atypical among Le Corbusier’s works; its highly sculptural forms use virtually no right angles and make no references to his usual prismatic clarity. The inclined walls appear almost to be collapsing inwards under the weight of the massive brown concrete roof. Only when the visitor enters the small, darker sanctuary, pierced by small shards of light, does he discover the thickness and solidity of these walls that firmly enfold the space and create a solemn atmosphere imbued with meditative tranquility.

UTOPIA - 15

Chandigarh, India (1951-65) In 1951, having seen his plans for numerous cities rejected, Le Corbusier finally received the opportunity to put his ideas into practice. After India gained independence in 1947, the country’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, envisioned a new capital for the Punjab state that would represent India’s entry into the modern world. He tapped Le Corbusier for the job. As in his other projects, Le Corbusier prioritized the automobile, connecting the sectors through wide boulevards. To conform to the modern ideas of functionality and efficiency, the city was zoned according to its different uses: residential buildings, a commercial center, a medical and university complex, and a recreation area, and a central park around a large artificial lake. Le Corbusier was also responsible for designing the famed Capitol Complex, which included the Secretariat (headquarters of both the Punjab and Haryana governments), the Legislative Assembly, and the High Court buildings.

UTOPIA - 16

Their impressive scale boldly displays Le Corbusier’s affinity for rough castconcrete, punctuated by long rows of bays articulated by prominent brisesoleil to provide relief from the hot desert sun. Chandigarh’s success might be gauged from recent polls that reveal it to be the happiest city of India - most likely due to the calm and order resulting from its unique design; meanwhile, Le Corbusier’s Capitol Complex was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage list in 2016. His legacy is all around us and will remain with us for some time to come. But we will give him the last word:

“Architecture is the masterly, correct and magnificent play of masses brought together in light. Our eyes are made to see forms in light; light and shade reveal these forms; cubes, cones, spheres, cylinders or pyramids are the great primary forms which light reveals to advantage; the image of these is distinct and tangible within us without ambiguity. It is for this reason that these are beautiful forms, the most beautiful forms. Everybody is agreed to that, the child, the savage and the metaphysician.”

ESTEPONA-BASED ARCHITECT ALEJANDRO GIMÉNEZ HAS CREATED A STUNNING, MODERN HOME IN THE HEART OF ANDALUCIA’S LEADING CITY – SEVILLA. Photos by Anna Elias

UTOPIA - 23

ONCE AGAIN, ARCHITECT ALEJANDRO GIMÉNEZ HAS WORKED HIS MAGIC ON THIS HOME IN THE HEART OF SEVILLA. ALEJANDRO HAS A REPUTATION FOR BLENDING A CONTEMPORARY AESTHETIC WITH TOUCHES FROM OTHER CULTURES, MOST NOTABLY THOSE OF JAPAN AND MEXICO, TO PRODUCE A LIVING SPACE THAT IS RECOGNISABLY OF ITS ERA, YET DOES NOT SLAVISHLY CONFORM TO ITS IDEALS. The apartment is located in the centre of Sevilla, and Alejandro was engaged to transform it into a modern living space. His first thoughts on ways to approach the task, was to first of all transform the living space from the classic concept of sectioning off rooms for different uses to one that opened the spaces up and have a more continuous and flexible formation within the apartment’s walls. As you can see from the images of the final result, Alejandro and his team have succeeded in connecting the main living room with the kitchen area to satisfy the contemporary desire for open-plan living, which effectively ensures that the people present in either space are never disconnected from each other. Adding light is a ‘de rigueur’ element of the contemporary style, and the architect achieved this with four large windows that allow light to flood in. This is particularly important in a city centre, where light can more

easily be blocked by the surrounding buildings than in an a apartment or villa on the coast. In the bedrooms, we see the skilful use of recessed lighting to create a warm ambience. In the apartment’s hallways, he stripped out the old, false ceilings, creating more height and therefore a greater feeling of space. The wood floors, rather than marble or tile, bring warmth to the uniform whiteness of the walls and doors. Although, in working on the interior design, it is clear that Alejandro has brought some of his trademark splashes of bright colour (in this case pops of turquoise) to break up the white and other neutral tones in the furnishings. Undoubtedly, this apartment will now feel cooler in Sevilla’s hot summers, thanks to the team’s choice of colours and materials. Alejandro commented that with regard to the interior design and the choice of furniture, he wanted “to achieve a look that was both cosy and contemporary.” The lucky owners of Casa Puri must be delighted with the finished product, because he has given them a home with heart and light. www.alejandrogimenez.net

FRIDA ESCOBEDO DESIGNS

THE SERPENTINE PAVILION 2018 THE SERPENTINE GALLERY IN LONDON’S HYDE PARK IS ONE OF THE CITY’S SMALLER, BUT STILL VERY FAMOUS, ART GALLERIES. THE SPACE IS MOST FAMOUS FOR SHOWING MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART AND EACH YEAR A DIFFERENT ARCHITECT IS AWARDED THE COMMISSION TO DESIGN THE PAVILION THAT SITS IN THE GALLERY’S GROUNDS. For 2018, Mexican architect, Frida Escobedo is the chosen designer and it will be the first time she has had one of her designs built in England, although it is not the first time her work has been seen in London. She is also the youngest architect to be invited to participate in this prestigious project, which was established in 2000, making her the eighteenth architect. Previous architects and artists who have received the invitation include Zaha Hadid and Frank Gehry, and in 2017 it was Diébédo Francis Kéré from Burkina Faso. Escobedo, who was born in 1979, is based in Mexico City. She is known for her work on skincare brand Aesop’s stores in Miami and a pop-up in New York. She also designed an Aztec-inspired addition to the V&A museum’s central courtyard, which uses mirrors to reference an ancient Aztec city built over a lake and often employs materials, such as layers of sand, to create an illusion of natural landscape features within a built environment. “Escobedo’s pavilion will take the form of an enclosed courtyard, comprised of two rectangular volumes positioned at an angle. While the outer walls will be aligned with the Serpentine Gallery’s eastern facade, the axis of the internal courtyard will align directly to the north,” say the organisers. “Internal courtyards are a common feature of Mexican domestic architecture, while the pavilion’s pivoted axis refers to the Prime Meridian, which was established in 1851 at Greenwich and became the global standard marker of time and geographical distance.”

Frida, in an interview for the design website “It’s Nice That” said: “My design for the Serpentine Pavilion 2018 is a meeting of material and historical inspirations inseparable from the city of London itself and an idea which has been central to our practice from the beginning: the expression of time in architecture through inventive use of everyday materials and simple forms. It is intended as a play on the celosia – a typical feature in Mexican architecture that allows breeze to permeate a building. The perforations will allow views into and out of the pavilion, while the mirrored underside of a curving canopy overhead will reflect the building and a pool beneath. “With this bold interior, Frida draws history into the present and redefines the meaning of public space,” said Serpentine Galleries director Hans Ulrich Obrist and chief executive Yana Peel.

2015

The pavilion will be open to the public from 15 June to 7 October 2018 in London’s Kensington Gardens. It will host a cafe, as well as a programme of art, architecture, music, film and dance events.

put Bitcoin as a payment for property on the map with the sale of 50 luxury apartments in Dubai, according to Business Insider and Cointelegraph. They launched the $325 million development called Aston Plaza and Residences in September 2017 with construction to be completed by 2020. Upon the announcement of the project, Mone and Barrowman promised to offer 150 out of the 1,300 apartments that comprise ‘Aston’ for Bitcoin. By February 2018, some 50 of those apartments have already been sold, the two entrepreneurs told Business Insider. Michelle Mone added that some of the buyers purchased two apartments each, and one person bought as many as ten.

Aston Plaza, Dubai

This means that there are still some available for sale to Bitcoin holders. They range from studios that cost $130,000 each, which is approximately equal to between 13, or more, Bitcoins, depending on the value of Bitcoin to the dollar at the time of buying, to twobedroom apartments for $380,000 each or, roughly, 45 Bitcoins. Again, this depends on the Bitcoin valuation, which as ever crypto owner knows goes up and down like a yo-yo. CNBC also reported this last September, when the pair originally pledged to sell 150 apartments for Bitcoin, which was the “first major development of this size” to be available for purchase in a digital currency. According to Barrowman they are still getting enquiries about the Bitcoin properties, but to date haven’t decided about adding more units to the initial 150 apartments. We are entering a new era where those who have made small fortunes (and some very large ones) in cryptocurrencies want to start purchasing ‘big ticket’ items. It is far easier for a Bitcoin holder to buy a property directly with Bitcoin than change it into Euros, dollars or sterling for the transaction. And, with many of the Bitcoin owners looking for luxury properties in desirable locations, surely Marbella and other areas on the Costa del Sol fit that bill to perfection.

Of course a great deal has changed since then, but one thing has remained a steadfast value: the company’s customers should be able to see and feel that the bed they are lying on really is a Jensen bed. These days, Jensen is one of the leading bed producers in Scandinavia. More than 150,000 mattresses are produced each year at the factory in Svelvik, which is on the shores of the Oslo Fjord. Jensen has naturally become a household name and not only in Scandinavian countries, as Marbella residents are aware.

From Alpine World Cups and X Games to Gumball 3000: the list goes on for Jon Olsson who constantly faces new challenges with his adventurous spirit. Accompanied by his talented and stylish fiancée Janni (awarded “Blog of the Year 2016”) the pair capture all their travels on film, which is then professionally edited and posted on their social media channels, inspiring more than two million followers from all over the world. As both have a busy lifestyle, they require optimal conditions for rest. And, Jensen was proud to deliver the best solution with its superior beds. Travelling to such an extent requires a place where Jon and Janni can feel totally comfortable and completely relaxed. And in their new Marbella house, the focus will be on this. They want to create a space where they can simply be themselves, hang out with friends and forget about all demands of their careers.

Jensen’s products truly spoke to Jon and Janni, because they offered fantastic support for the sensitive zones of the body, specifically the back, hips, shoulders and neck – regardless of whether the mattress is firm or soft. This settled the case and the couple decided that they would furnish every bedroom with a Jensen bed, so that not just them, but also their guests would enjoy the excellent sleep comfort provided by Jensen. Jon and Janni have a vision: Each day is a gift and deserves the best conditions. And Jensen offers the best conditions for sleeping soundly. www.jensenstore.com

IT’S BEEN A BUSY WINTER SEASON AT THE AMBIENCE DESIGN STUDIO! A RANGE OF PROJECTS HAVE BEEN ON THE DRAWING BOARD WHERE OUR TEAM OF ARCHITECTS AND INTERIOR DESIGNERS HAVE BEEN WORKING ARDUOUSLY TO CONCEPTUALISE AND CREATE UNIQUE SPACES.

PUENTE ROMANO We’d like to start with one of our projects which will soon be completed at the renown Puente Romano. This beautiful villa has experienced a huge transformation. Our interior architects have done an amazing job doing the planning and design to enchance both the functionality of the space and to likewise create a unique interior. The refurbishment also included redesigning the false ceilings, interior and exterior lighting, BBQ area, two living rooms, bathrooms and all the interior built-in carpentry, in addition to all the furnishings and decorative elements that completed the look of this fabulous interior.

EL ROSARIO A stylish interior designed with Ambience’s unequivocal flair for contemporary design. We kept the style light and contemporary. We designed bespoke wall claddings and additionally we used some organic shapes and materials to add warmth and create an interior that would enhance the modern architecture. We were also requested to design an office. The space was conceptualised to integrate all the main elements of a fully functional home office.

MARBELLA We were commissioned to fully furnish the interiors of a 5-bedroom villa. A design where elegance is the mindset, an array of neutral tones are the palette to keep the interior calm and inviting.

UTOPIA - 82

The large windows in the open-plan kitchen, lounge and dining space provide the area with fantastic light, so it was important to choose pieces that would discretely combine with the beautiful outdoor space and panoramic sea views.

White linen voiles, and natural materials were picked for the upholstery, whilst a unique eucalyptus glazed finish gives the sand dune effect to the bespoke dining table; a luxurious touch to the design. In the master bedroom we custom designed glazed wall panels, and opted for diffused pendant lamps and a full length upholstered headboard provide extra comfort for the bed area. By the large glass sliding doors, a round stylish loveseat takes the spotlight, whilst a soft abstract artwork brings a touch of colour to complete the look.

THE NEW-BUILD MARBELLA PROPERTY SPECIALISTS FOUNDED AT THE HEART OF THE RECESSION, NVOGA HAS GONE FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH TO BECOME THE MARBELLA PROPERTY SPECIALISTS IN LUXURY NEWBUILD REAL ESTATE. The reason for this is that Nvoga is in many ways an innovator that likes to be ahead of the curve rather than follow behind. Where other agencies continued to focus on resale properties and felt the full force of the international recession, Nvoga was one of the first Marbella property specialists to focus on marketing new-build homes. In the beginning this mostly meant promoting developments that had been completed in the wake of the recession. Many were bank repossessions that offered fantastic value to investors and homebuyers, so when Nvoga stepped in with a sound plan to modernise them to contemporary tastes and market them, such properties sold very well. “A lot of people were looking for contemporary Marbella properties that offered quality and value,” says José Carlos León, who founded Nvoga, “so with an effective marketing strategy behind them the projects we promoted became a huge success.”

UTOPIA - 98

“The essence in all of this is focusing on quality. We were at times offered projects that we simply didn’t believe in, so we made the conscious decision to only offer our clients quality projects and stick to that.” EXPERTISE IN OFFERING LUXURY NEW MARBELLA HOMES Banks that had tried to manage this role themselves soon recognised Nvoga’s success and turned to the company to assist them with the marketing and sales process. Nvoga became one of the leading Marbella property specialists in quality new-build Marbella apartments and villas, and it continues to build on its reputation for expertise in this field. “The essence in all of this is focusing on quality. We were at times offered projects that we simply didn’t believe in, so we made the conscious decision to only offer our clients quality projects and stick to that.”

“Each one is an iconic development that is taking Marbella property to a new level of design, style and comfort, and we are proud to offer the best new properties for sale in Marbella.”

The search for quality Marbella property to offer its growing international client base led Nvoga to a leader in the market once again: it gradually moved its focus from marketing finished developments to promoting the first modern Marbella apartments and villas built after the recession. In the meantime, there had been a great development in architectural styles, interior layouts, construction techniques and in-house technologies, all of which are featured in the contemporary Marbella properties that Nvoga now offers exclusively. These include such design landmarks as Icon Signature Villas in Santa Clara, Marbella East; South Bay, modern contemporary apartments in Estepona and Vanian Green Village at Selwo, also Estepona: New Homes with nature “Darya Elviria” - Marbella; a new exclusive development of contemporary homes in Sierra Blanca - Marbella; the exquisite modern Marbella villas of the Marein Collection and the ecological Quercus Homes near Casares. “Each one is an iconic development that is taking Marbella property to a new level of design, style and comfort, and we are proud to offer the best new properties for sale in Marbella.”
