PUBLISHER’S LETTER
SMASHING
The Summer Well, hello to you, July – this is where we turn up the heat! This is our biggest issue to date and it’s packed with luxury local content. We have had a fantastic month overall, but the highlight has to be July’s cover star Vogue Williams. This multi-talented Irish model and DJ who is also an in-demand TV and radio presenter is going from strength to strength and Society was delighted to catch up with her at photo shoot for Marbella’s own luxury beachwear designer, Virginia Macari. Vogue has already shown her steely side on Bear Grylls’s Mission Survive programme, beating Dame Kelly Holmes and English rugby star, Mike Tindall into the bargain. You do not want to mess with this lady! We also have an interview with the upand-coming star, Tallia Storm. Prepare to hear a lot more about this young star-in-the-making who has already amassed a few celebrity fans – Nile Rodgers and Sir Elton John, anyone? Not only has she, at a ridiculously young age, released a critically acclaimed EP (Social Security) but this Scottish lass also has a book deal with publishing house, Scholastic UK. Her first novel, Pop Girl, offers young readers some idea of what life in the music industry is like. This month we are introducing a new feature – Breaking Business is the place that we let readers know what our valued advertisers have in the pipeline, whether it’s a new venture, a special offer or a new product or service. Please let us know what you’re up to and we will be very happy to publicise it. It’s also a particular pleasure to report on a local success and this month we feature Patricia Luke, a young fashion designer whose talent, vision and perseverance has already seen her launch her own label. Apart from sharing the news about her new cruise collection, she also has some excellent advice for anyone thinking of setting up their own business. If you are already feeling the strain this summer (and I must confess that the endless partying can be tiring – you should see
the exhausted faces in the SOCIETY office!), then we can recommend Las Dunas’s five-star Healthouse Spa. This place is really a shrine to relaxation and can tailor treatments to suit your exact requirements, so don’t be shy to let them know how you’re feeling and the experienced and highly trained team will be delighted to sort out all your aches and pains. Summer is often a time when we look at our homes and wonder how we can add more colour to our environment. If you are thinking of buying a piece of art to brighten a room or even to rejuvenate an outdoor area, then you are in luck, because the interior design experts at FOC have some excellent advice that will help you to achieve all of your artistic aims. Are you currently trying to work your way to a healthier lifestyle? Then we can recommend our resident foodie Bettina who, this month is focusing on organic food which, these days, is a regular point of conversation and – occasionally – controversy. Is it worth buying organic produce and how much better for you is it than standard fruit and veg? Bettina shares her opinions and has also contributed a recipe for some very healthy pancakes. As usual in July, we have a bumper Who’s In Who’s Out, so if you have attended an opening party or an exhibition you never know – you might also feature in this issue. Whether you’re working throughout the summer or having a well-earned break, enjoy your July! ‘Til next time... Andy Clark

Strike a POSE VOGUE WILLIAMS Having featured in Vogue magazine’s Swimwear Special issue, designer to the stars, VIRGINIA MACARI asked Irish celebrity Vogue Williams to model her latest collection on location in Marbella. By Eleanor McKenzie
T
here’s a little saying that goes like this, “If you love Irish girls raise your hands; if you don’t, raise your standards.” And Vogue Williams is a prime example of an Irish beauty who is widely admired by both men and women, and who has definitely elevated the standards of Celtic beauty and talent combined. She hails from Howth, a picturesque seaside village on the north side of Dublin Bay that is renowned for its beauty. If Helen of Troy’s beauty was such that she possessed the “face that
launched a thousand ships”, then it’s fairly certain that Vogue Williams has the looks to have turned more than a few heads in Howth harbour. But, it must be said that she has used her brains as well as her beauty, something that her career to date clearly shows. The actress and model, who is also a well known DJ in addition to being a TV and radio presenter in Ireland, started her career on the series Fade Street. This popular reality TV show followed the lives of four career girls in Dublin and in Vogue’s case it focused on her

work at glossy Irish lifestyle and fashion magazine Stellar and her passion for DJing and acting. Vogue recalls her launch-pad experience as being “absolutely gas”, and if you’re Irish, you’ll know that means she had a lot of fun making the series. Following this excellent start to her career, Vogue was inundated with a variety of modelling jobs that established her on the Irish and international scene. It wasn’t long before she caught the attention of

Westlife’s Brian McFadden and the two got engaged in 2012. That same year the couple found themselves in Australia, thanks to McFadden’s stint as judge on Australia’s Got Talent alongside Dannii Minogue. But Vogue didn’t sit idly by and spend her days on Bondi beach; she starred on the cover of Australia’s Maxim magazine and took part in Australia’s “Dancing with
30
the Stars” in April 2012. Vogue reprised her dancing talents again in 2013 when she and McFadden took part in ITV’s celebrity dance show “Stepping Out” and the couple came in second place. After that, Vogue really stepped out and into the limelight.
In 2015, she rather bravely took part in “Bear Grylls: Mission Survive” which she won. No doubt she will never forget that during the show she had to drink her own urine, but it is precisely her “just get it done and do it well” approach to everything she does that

has ensured her success. Bear Grylls acknowledged that it is her positive attitude and the fact that she “works solidly” that saw her beat off all the other competitors, including Olympic athlete Dame Kelly Holmes and that tough looking rugger bugger Mike Tindall. Between her Australian interlude and her success on the Bear Grylls programme, she wasnt idle, if you were wondering what she was doing in 2014. RTÉ2 commissioned two shows featuring her as presenter that year: “Vogue Does Home” and “Vogue Does the Afterlife.” This was followed by “Vogue Does Straight As” which, combined with her Bear Grylls fame, created a stir of increased media interest around her that hasn’t really stopped since. Her 2015 show, “Vogue’s Wild Girls” saw her meet all
types of “tough women” from MMA fighters to gang members and her interview with a death row inmate generated a lot of column inches. One eminent TV critic said, “With her model looks this could have been a flimsy flim flam of hair-flicking frippery, but it was one of the most sensitively handled interviews I’ve ever seen with a condemned person.” As one Irish newspaper remarked, Vogue demonstrated the truth of the maxim that “you should never judge a book by its cover.” Ross Kemp may think he’s cornered the market in covering the wild side of life, but Vogue Williams is giving him a run for his money on that score. This year she has already appeared on that popular British lunchtime show “Loose Women” and she has her own radio show called “Houseparty”
on Dublin station SPIN 1038. RTÉ has already commissioned another series of “Wild Girls” and Vogue’s diary fills up fast these days, which is why it is so exciting that she has jetted in to model the outstanding new collection of beachwear by acclaimed international designer and Marbella resident, Virginia Macari. Virginia has described Vogue as “the perfect bombshell beachbabe” and we’d agree that these photos back that up 100 percent. Vogue is also one of Virginia’s “Bikini Babes”; a selection of top models and actresses who are brand ambassadors for the high-end Virginia Macari collections. But, as Vogue Williams’ career amply shows, she’s not just a pretty face and a stunning body; she’s very definitely ‘in vogue’ and she’s absolutely one of Ireland’s finest, and will be for some time to come.

ON THE HORIZON Interview by Eleanor McKenzie Photos by Irene Sekulic | Make up by Nicola McGeorge | Hair by Bardou Salon
She’s got 142,000 Instagram fans and counts Eva Longoria, Sir Elton John and Nile Rodgers among her growing list of celebrity friends. She’s a brand ambassadress for Maserati and wears MAC Cosmetics for her red carpet occasions.
Who is she? She’s Tallia Storm and she’s setting the world alight with her music and books.
I
t’s no overstatement to say that SOCIETY magazine was thrilled to have the opportunity to interview this young woman who is whipping up media attention wherever she goes. She’s no stranger to the coast and has been coming here since the age of three, and while her Scottish birthplace quite rightly feels proud of its new, home grown talent, Marbella can also give Tallia a big shout out, because not only does she visit here regularly, she loves Marbella.
these singers. I’ve never had a moment’s hesitation that I wanted to be a singer, it’s what I absolutely love doing.
Spend an hour with Ms Storm and you’ll soon realise that she’s no manufactured performer who only covers other artists’ tracks; she can read music, play an instrument and compose her own songs. Furthermore, her knowledge of musical roots is remarkable for an almost-18-yearold and this young lady talks with passion and insight about the jazz heritage that influences contemporary R&B. Indeed, when Tallia switches from talking about everyday stuff to music, the change in her energy is palpable and she’s no longer a teen but a mature musician who has made a point of understanding where she’s coming from.
Did you learn to play an instrument at an early age? Yes. My dad said that I couldn’t start singing until I’d learnt to read music. So, I did that and then I decided to learn to play the flute. I absolutely love flute instrumentals and I like bringing it into jazz compositions.
She famously caught the attention of Sir Elton John by being in the right place at the right time to hand David Furnish a demo tape while on holiday in Hawaii. This golden opportunity led to her opening one of the great piano man’s shows with a 25-minute set, which is a staggering accomplishment for a new artist. However, as she revealed during our interview, she’s always been a natural performer starting with homeproduced shows written and performed by Tallia and her older sister, with props and costumes from around the house and Mum’s dressing-up box. When did your enthusiasm for music start and what has influenced your musical style? First of all, I used to sing everything when I was a little girl. I’d sing, “What’s for dinner?” and “Where are my school shoes?” Then on the drive to school my Dad always played Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington and Miles Davis and I thought it was funny music, but after a time it became the music I genuinely loved. I started listening to it at home in my bedroom and I wanted to become
36
My Dad is a jazz pianist and I’d listen to him at the piano and start singing and humming along with what he was playing. The first song I really learned to sing at that time was George Gershwin’s “Summertime” and that was the song I opened my set with at the Elton John concert. It’s a song that has sentimental value for me now.
How come you had a demo tape ready to give to David Furnish? My Dad was working on a music project for a London record label and one day the session singer didn’t turn up. He needed to send the song to the label so that they could pick a singer and I was on hand to stand in. I didn’t really think anything about it; I just sang the song. When the label got the song, they wanted to know who the singer was. So, then we recorded it again properly and that’s how I got the demo tape. What were you doing before you met Elton’s partner? I started out by doing gigs with Capital FM in Scotland, turned on the Christmas lights and appeared at London Fashion Week. Word soon got out that I was singing and I did events at shopping malls, all the kinds of appearances where you start learning your trade as a performer, and then the holiday in Hawaii came and I got my Big Moment. How did you come to appear at London Fashion Week? The fashion label Bunmi-Koko had seen one of my videos online and they heard that I was in London at the time. My style was very R&B and bold at the time and I was the perfect fit for the brand’s values. The girl with the big hair and the brand with the crazy colours fitted perfectly together.
Ah yes, the big hair and dramatic outfits! What’s your fashion philosophy? My sister styles me and we believe that with fashion you should be fearless. Your style is a reflection of you and I wanted to experiment. I think I got away with a lot of my ‘looks’ because of my age. Also, I wanted to break the mould of what a jazz singer should look like. There are so many preconceptions of jazz, yet it’s the root of modern R&B and classical music is the root of pop music. I mean, if you said to a Jason Derulo fan that you can trace his tracks back to classical music, they’d never believe you. What really excites me now is that today’s R&B is jazz. Pharell, Justin Timberlake and Nile Rodgers are bringing jazz into the mainstream through R&B and it’s really exciting. Who are your favourite designers apart from the high street brands? I love supporting new designers at the start of their careers. Just like people have supported me. After I’d been at Eva Longoria’s Global Gift Gala in Marbella, I met Moises Nieto and started wearing his dresses. Three years later he won a Vogue España award, and I’m delighted to be able to say I supported him from his early days. Other than young designers, I’m obsessed with vintage Chanel. It’s my goal to hang some Chanel outfits in my wardrobe one day. I shop at Camden market for vintage items and just the other day I found an amazing pair of cat’s eye sunglasses in a Camden vintage store. I love coming across things like that just by looking that bit further than the bigger stores. In October 2015, you launched “Pop Girl” your debut novel. How did your book deal with Scholastic come about? It’s bit of a departure from singing. Nile Rodgers of Chic heard about me through my New York lawyer and he invited me to speak at his TEDXTeen conference. Then he asked me to speak and perform at TEDXTeen in London; that was an incredible honour as well as exciting. A couple of days after the event my #Glamager, which is what I call my Mum/Manager in my blog, received an email from Scholastic UK offering a book deal.
The Entertainment Charts
How tough was it to shift between writing songs and writing a book? It wasn’t really difficult at all. I was already blogging for Huffington Post Teen and I had plenty of experience of writing critical essays at school. So, writing the book was more or less a continuation of an activity I was already familiar with. Is “Pop Girl” you? Yes and no. The main character is called Storm Hall and her story is a blend of my life and fiction. It’s a fame story: I’d describe it as Gossip Girl meets High School Musical. I’ve had a great response to it and I’m already working on the second book. It’s very exciting to have the opportunity to use my talent in this way as well as follow my music career. It’s like having two careers! Are you with a music label now? I was with Virgin, but not any more. Ron Fair signed me and he’s a huge name in R&B, but unfortunately just after we’d signed the contract he got fired. Virgin was convinced I’d be the next big thing and saw me as a new Katy Perry, but I’m nothing like her. I’m R&B, not pop. I’d rather take my time following my own path and my lawyer, who is also Drake’s lawyer, advised us to shake hands and walk away, which we did. I don’t have a problem with Virgin at all; it just wasn’t the right label for me. I’m not with any record label at present, I’m focusing on writing and recording and putting myself in a strong position to get the best deal when I finally decide to sign with a label again. I don’t want to be a No.1 sensation who appears and disappears overnight, I’m in this for the long haul
I don’t want to be a No.1 sensation who appears and disappears overnight, I’m in this for the long haul and as Elton John advised me “let time take time.” and as Elton John advised me “let time take time.” What is your idea of the perfect album? Amy Winehouse’s “Frank” and Drake’s “Views” are what I consider proper albums. Nobody makes albums now like they used to, but these two are examples of the old skool approach where all the tracks hang together in a way that you want to listen the whole way through rather than just pick out the individual ‘hit’ tracks. Who’s on your ideal Spotify playlist? Well, at the moment there’s a lot of Bryson Tiller; I just love him. And Kanye West, Drake, Amy Winehouse, Mint Condition, Jamiroquai and lots of Chic. It’s a bit of R&B, hiphop and a bit of smooth. I’d probably add in some Corinne Bailey Rae, for a mellow, chilled vibe. Oh, and Trey Songz; I absolutely love his work as well.
I’ve never had a moment’s hesitation that I wanted to be a singer, it’s what I absolutely love doing. 37
The Entertainment Charts
If you could record with any jazz singer— living or dead- who would it be? I’d have to say Billie Holiday. I feel like I should say Ella Fitzgerald, but I love Billie’s voice the best. She’s so experimental and you’d never know where she’d go with a song. Today songs are so structured, but she could take a song and end it in an unexpected place. And the song would probably have to be “All of Me.” It would be great to chat all day with Tallia about jazz classics, but as ever an interview must come to an end, but not before I ask Tallia a couple more questions that Marbellís will be very interested in. What do you love about Marbella? I’ve been coming here since I was three and I just love the people and the amazing energy and the vibe of Marbella. The weather is great and there’s so much to see and do. It’s one of the most beautiful places in Europe and I love looking at La Concha. Whatever side of it you are on, it looks stunning. I’m also mad about the restaurants here and my favourites are Sushi Banús, MC Café, Serafina at Puente Romano and the Italian restaurant Celebrities Gold in Benabola and Aretusa. How did you discover SOCIETY magazine and what do you love about it? I discovered Society when I was quite young and my mum used to bring it back after a trip to the hairdresser. I just love the pictures; they’re so beautiful. I also think it’s the best source of information about where to go in Marbella and I’ve tried so many restaurants because they have appeared in Society. It’s also a really good read. For example, I loved the recent article about Roxy Horner and the Elizabeth Hurley one is very cool as well. Society magazine sums up Marbella for me and it’s the ‘go to’ bible for Marbella that not only entertains me, it also inspires me.

Flume - Take A Chance (Experimental) Flume is back with new album, Skin. We especially liked this track, a collaboration with Sweden’s Little Dragon. Just make yourself a cocktail, lie back in your chair and be prepared to listen to some seriously creative stuff.
Fat Joe & Remy Ma - All the way up (HipHop) A great club track featuring French Montana, that is set to be on repeat in all clubs this summer. Fancy some HipHop with its sunshades firmly ON? This is it. DVSN - Hallucinations (R&B) The first time I heard this song I got goosebumps all over my body. The Canadian duo is set for big things if they keep on coming up with atmospheric, trippy tunes like this. Lghtnng - Keep It Together (Retro New Wave) Had this song stuck in my head for a few days now. Great retro 80s style pop track that took us back in time – but only in a good way. Dream Fiend - My Electric Heart (House) Hardcore summer vibes coming from this song which has clearly been inspired by Daft Punk. We love a good vocoder!
Shake It (Deep 6 House) Montéz - Tryna

Not the newest track, but still one of our favourites. You just have to check this one out if you’re a fan of original deep house and, face it, name one person who likes to go clubbing who isn’t. File this one under ‘floor fillers’.

Look Out For
Patricia Luke …A new fashion design star from Marbella on the world’s catwalk Patricia Luke is a young fashion designer from Marbella who is showing everyone that dreams can come true with hard work. After training as a lawyer, Patricia decided to follow her heart instead and pursue a career in the world of fashion.
One year later she presented her first summer collection ‘LUKEWILD’ in her hometown of Marbella, including putting on a show at STARLITE. She has won prizes for her work, which resulted in her being selected as one of the best fashion designers in Andalucia.
She is currently living and working in New York, where she completed her Masters in Design at The New York School of Design and where she launched her own label ‘Patricia Luke’ in 2014.
In March 2016 she launched her JANKO cruise collection at a New York show to excellent reviews and as she revealed in her interview with Society magazine, there is no secret formula behind her success other than self-belief, dedication and love for her work.
“Right now I am working on my next collection “ALIVE” which is a mixture of colours, textures, and flower prints that I believe will tell a powerful story.” 44
We Interview Ms. Luke Where do you find the inspiration for each collection?
Inspiration can come from anywhere and in unexpected ways. It could be a song, a magazine, a movie or my current mood at that time. All of my senses are always open and ready to absorb any inspiration that crosses my path. Marbella has given me so many ideas over the years and we are very lucky to live and to be part of this amazing paradise.
How do you define yourself and what is your favorite quote that keeps you going?
People close to me know what “LUKEWILD” is all about: I am a crazy, pure Andalusian who loves life and has a hunger for success as well as flamenco and sushi! But I know that absolutely nothing will happen if I don’t believe in myself and work hard every day. Nelson Mandela is the inspiration that keeps me going; he said: “ It always seems impossible until it’s done.”
What is the biggest lesson that you have learnt since you started to follow your dream? Take risks and follow your instincts. There are always going to be difficult situations in your life that will make you feel confused and lost, but you can’t let them pollute your vision or your drive for success. I have made countless mistakes and I will make more in the future, but when I look back at those mistakes I see them as
a learning experience. We also need to support other people; I feel very strongly that women should support other women especially. I love the way Society magazine promotes and shows interest in young people following their dreams. I have read a lot of articles recently that say having a network of social contacts actually helps people have longer, healthier and happier lives. When you live your life with purpose and try to follow your heart, you wake up every day with a smile on your face and something to look forward to!
What are you working on now and where do you see PATRICIA LUKE in 5 years? Right now I am working on my next collection “ALIVE” which is a mixture of colours, textures, and flower prints that I believe will tell a powerful story. I would like to expand and grow my brand, starting from Marbella, and to make it a brand that is recognized worldwide. At the same time as all of this, I am very focused on starting a family because I love kids! I guess I will have a lot on my plate. Hopefully in a few years I will come back to Society magazine with some interesting stories for you.
What advice would you give to aspiring fashion designers?
I would say make sure that fashion really is your passion. When you’re sure that you absolutely cannot live
without it, then make a sound business plan and be ready to work really hard! Believe in yourself and your creations, because if you don’t you can’t expect others to share your belief. Always think about creating cohesive collections and be clear about who your customers are. Most importantly, be a business person as much as a creative person and then just FIGHT FOR IT! We have to say that Patricia Luke is a stellar example of what you can achieve when you work hard at doing what you really love while also understanding the need to bring business sense to the creative process. This fledgling lawyer turned fashion designer is certainly an inspiration to people of all ages who would love to follow their dream, and at Society we look forward to seeing more of Patricia’s collections at fashion shows in Marbella and the rest of the world. She’s clearly a stylish and smart ambassador for Marbella who will further elevate Spain’s standing in the tough world of fashion design and we’ll be following her progress with great interest.

marbellahealthstyle Kimberley Mills Bentley Fitness · Body · Lifestyle · Health · Soul · Style · Mind & the true Beauty of this little vibrant town This month has been a hectic one, to say the least! There have been all the La Sala parties and the opening of the new restaurant, OAK Garden & Grill which, I must say, is amazing, so for the next few weeks I’m going to take it easy and have a good detox. I’ve been looking around the area and have found some amazing places to go to cleanse the body and mind, Here are my Top Ten tips on giving your body a boost for the summer.
Healthouse
One of the most exclusive places is the health spa at Las Dunas. It offers a selection of detoxing packages and is a place where you can either go for a relaxing day out or, alternatively. make it into a little holiday. There are many different treatments to help with weight loss or just to give you a sense of well-being. The spa facilities are first class and, with a team of experts on hand to answer all your health problems, it is the perfect place to go and address any health issues you might have, from food intolerance to issues which may be causing you to feel run down or stressed. I have already booked my spa day and I’m really looking forward to it.
Look your best
I have been planning to visit the Look Your Best centre in Marbella’s port for months, They offer a one-to-one programme to help with any body issues you may have. By using the latest technological innovations their approach to fitness is far from a normal gym session. They also have a great introductory offer at the moment where you can enjoy a 20 minute one-to-one workout with one of the qualified instructors and use all the equipment. Sometimes it’s good to mix up your normal workouts to give your body a boost.
Get it moving
One of the treatments available here on the Coast has been around for years, although it is probably something you wouldn’t really want to talk about in polite company - colonic irrigation. I have had this treatment before and, although it can be quite uncomfortable and slightly embarrassing, it really does have health benefits. So how does it work? Colonic irrigation is a process where 60 to 70 litres of water is introduced into the colon, acting as a detoxifying procedure, flushing out all the old waste which may have been causing you pain and to retain unwanted toxins. When the body has excessive toxins they can circulate though the whole body and, if the colon does not eliminate them, they can be redirected to other organs like the liver, kidneys and lungs and can cause some bad health issues so, while this treatment can be rather uncomfortable, the health benefits are worth it.

Bicentury
We have all heard about how juices can have a really good impact on helping with weight loss, but in reality it’s hard sometimes, when you have kids running around, to slice and dice ten different types of fruit and veg every morning prior to blending. I’ve been trying to stick to my Bicentury sachets each day; these are so easy to use, are full of vitamins and actually taste okay. You can get them at nearly any supermarket and they don’t cost too much either. I just make one up with a glass of water each morning and have found that it has helped with my digestion and overall energy levels.
No rest for the wicked
Boot camp
I have heard great things about some of the boot camps here on the Coast and am going to be signing up to one at the end of the month. The Marbella fitness camp has so much to offer from daily boot camp workouts to zumba and boxing. I have tried a boot camp once before in the UK, but it was really hardcore and I only lasted three days. It was very similar to an army camp - up at five and surviving on around six hundred calories a day so, to be perfectly honest, it wasn’t the most enjoyable experience I’ve ever had, but I like the sound of the boot camps here. Training on the beach at sunrise and swimming in the sea sounds far more tempting. My friend has been going to one for the past few weeks and she said she has never felt better; just hope I keep it up this time.
What with all the parties and openings going on this month you can feel as though you haven’t had a good night’s sleep for ages. Research shows that sleep is one of the most vital parts of your day and a lack of it can cause your body to burn out and lack energy, so this month I’m going to try a tip my mum passed on, which is to mix some lavender with warm water in an old spray bottle and lightly spritz over my pillow before bedtime. It’s meant to calm the mind and send you into a deep sleep. There’s nothing like a good night’s sleep to make you feel more energised.
Protein
One of my best friends has the most beautiful long, glossy hair. The other day I asked what her secret is and she swears it’s a result of eating more protein, so I’ve been researching the subject this week and was quite surprised at how much diet plays a role in the condition of our hair and skin. Basically, it’s a case of rubbish in, rubbish out. Protein plays a major role in the structure of our hair so if, like me, you suffer from dry, brittle hair try mixing up your diet with protein in the form of lentils or cottage cheese. I’m going to try to add some more protein into my diet and hopefully get my hair in condition in time for my wedding next year.
Juice on tap
As I have already mentioned, it can be hard to find the time to make up juices every day, so I was happy and surprised to find Juice Mad online. You can have all your juices made up for you and delivered right to your doorstep. Choose different types of juices to detoxify and boost energy levels. They all come ready to drink, so definitely check Juice Mad out.
Adios
Summer camps
The schools are closing this month, so it’s more important than ever to keep the little ones active. There are loads of summer camps along the Coast that offer your child the opportunity to make some new friends and learn new skills, from swimming to dance, tennis and even golf. Have a look at the website marbellafamilyfun.com for a selection of great camps to keep your little ones happy and active throughout the summer.
I’m off travelling next month with my little gang, so this is my last column for SOCIETY Magazine and, I have to say, I’ve really enjoyed it. Exploring the area and finding lots of new and exciting places to go has been lovely. I truly love living here on the Coast; it’s the place I call home and I hope that some of my suggestions have helped you to to find some new and exciting places to go and things to do.

Psychology The
Behind Our ‘Romantic’ Choices
There are many schools of thought on the methods of how we choose our partner and the specifications of what we look for in a potential companion. People often believe that they subconsciously look for characteristics found in their own parents or, by contrast, even when they make an effort to avoid this, their chosen partner inevitably displays similarities to their mother or father. Some studies have shown that there are certain characteristics that we unconsciously look for that are found in our opposite sex parent, men looking for the characteristics of their mother and
50
women for their father. As humans we are somehow drawn to familiarity and what is already known to us. While we may not actually seek out the characteristics of our parents when looking for a partner, there is still a deeper explanation for the underlying selection process we undertake. The truth behind this is attributed to a psychological concept called
attachment theory, where it is believed that the style of attachment with a child’s caregiver affects individuals throughout their adult lives, particularly in their romantic partnerships. Childhood
experiences help to develop our emotional responses to different situations in our adult life. These experiences also help to form the basis of how we develop our personal relationships, how we bond with another person and the criteria we look for in choosing a partner.
Children are receptive to all emotional indicators
FEEL-GOOD FACTOR
from the people closest and caring for them. They
learn to mimic facial expressions such as smiling and frowning and also quickly pick up on negativity, stress and uncertainty. Research comprehensively demonstrates that early life experiences have a profound impact on our adult life happiness, prosperity and wellbeing. A traumatic event in your life, especially a memorable incident from your childhood, can leave scars of hurt, pain or fear for long periods of time and can often remain with you throughout your life.
The effects of our feelings of security and stability in our childhood have a strong correspondence with how we foster and function in a personal relationship with our partner. Studies show that
70 to 80 per cent of our learned childhood attachment styles do not change throughout adulthood. If a person has had a positive attachment, having grown up within a stable, caring and supportive environment, they generally have good levels of self esteem, communicate well with others and in a relationship situation are more open in their communication, feel able to depend on their partner and have less fear of abandonment and rejection. By contrast, if a child has not had a secure attachment with a primary caregiver, has not felt secure, cared for, stable or safe, then this has consequences throughout adulthood. An insecure attachment can be caused by emotional or physical neglect, abuse, traumatic experiences, separation from the carer, or by a carer who is unable properly to care for the child, for example due to sickness or addiction problems. The effects of an insecure attachment can lead to feelings in adulthood of lack of confidence, insecurity and difficulties managing stressful situations. An individual with a background like this may be less trusting, preferring to be more autonomous and independent in order to defend him or herself against neglect or desertion by their partner. They may even avoid committed relationships altogether. These factors can also be attributed to our nervous system and how we handle stressful situations, keep calm under pressure or express our emotions of anger when in conflict. If a child has grown up in a securely attached environment where their primary caregiver has been able to manage a stressful situation and has always remained calm, then the child has learned these behaviours from an early age and can replicate them throughout their adult life.
However, if they have learned the behaviours of yelling, shouting and showing aggression then this pattern can also follow them in similar situations throughout their life. These factors also influence the type of partners we seek to find for ourselves. Simple influences may subconsciously impact our decision when choosing our companion. For instance, if a person is raised by carers who attend to their every whim, never saying, “No!” then this can develop into a sense of entitlement in later life. Therefore, in a relationship this person may have unrealistic expectations and impose huge demands on their partner. By contrast, if a child had carers who were overly dominant and made every decision for them then this person is more likely to seek out a dominant companion.
“
Communication is very important in resolving all conflicts, simply by telling your partner that you care for them on a regular basis can make a big difference in fostering closeness in a relationship.
”
The biggest impacts of emotional development for a child occur from birth until the age of three and continue until the age of 10. Research has shown that the memory and body preserve memories of stressful events and they should be dealt with in order not negatively to affect the rest of one’s life. Some people
who have grown up with an insecure attachment with their caregiver cannot get past the feelings of hurt and anger, so the cycle continues when they are trying to develop relationships with others.
An example of this is that they may complain about the characteristics of one of their parents and continually blame this person for all of their failed relationships. In this case they will probably automatically look for and find fault in every person they date relating back to their caregiver.
It is possible to change cognitive patterns and create a positive change in relationship behaviours in order to nurture a more harmonious romantic relationship with your partner. Awareness of your behaviour patterns and feelings are important to help you move forward and feel better about yourself and your relationships. If you feel that your carers did not express positive feelings towards you as a child then you can address this with your partner to ensure that they are making you feel secure and happy in the relationship. If you were rarely told as a child that you had done a great job, or that your carers felt proud of you when you had accomplished something you may have felt let down and these feelings can lead to a sense of not feeling appreciated in adulthood. Your partner can help you to feel better about yourself by letting you know that you have done something to help them, or that they share your excitement when you accomplish a goal. Communication is very important in resolving all conflicts, so simply telling your partner that you care for them - on a regular basis can make a big difference in fostering closeness in a relationship.
There are many positive ways to work towards changing cognitive patterns and habits in your partnerships. First and foremost,
if you are not happy in yourself it is difficult to bond closely with someone else. Your first priority should be to look after yourself and then you can think about enhancing relationships with people around you, whether these be colleagues, family members, friends or acquaintances. Build your self confidence and then concentrate on your physical well-being. Exercising raises your endorphin levels, which triggers positive feelings in the mind and body. Once you feel positive about yourself, look at finding ways to improve your relationship with your partner. If you are experiencing difficulties then acknowledging them and identifying what is causing these is an important step forward to a happier future.
If you would like to talk through this topic and how it affects your own wellbeing then contact me. The way we approach and work through these behavioural patterns is an important part of individual and couples therapy.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR
Dr. Luis Hidalgo, Medical Director at HC Marbella International Hospital, answers all your questions about diabetes.
WHAT IS DIABETES? WHAT DOES IT INVOLVE? Diabetes mellitus is a disorder in which the body is unable to regulate glucose (sugar) in the blood. The cells of the body need sugar to function normally. Sugar is introduced into cells with the help of a hormone called insulin. If there is insufficient insulin or if cells do not respond well to insulin, blood sugar levels increase. This is what happens in people with diabetes. WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF DIABETES? On many occasions diabetes does not produce any symptoms. If they do occur they can include the need to urinate frequently, thirst, weight loss and blurred vision.
56
DIABETES
AN INCREASINGLY COMMON CONDITION
WHY SHOULD WE WORRY ABOUT IT? Because, although it might not cause any symptoms and the patient may not feel unwell, over time diabetes can cause serious problems. If not treated correctly it can lead to: * Heart attacks * Stroke (cerebral infarct) * Kidney disease * Sight problems including blindness * Pain or loss of feeling in the hands and feet. * Need for amputation of the fingers or toes.
HOW CAN I FIND OUT IF I HAVE DIABETES? You will need a blood test to measure the concentration of glucose in your blood. WHAT ARE THE RISK FACTORS? Some factors which increase the risk of diabetes have been identified. They are as follows: * Being overweight * Being over 45 years of age * Family history of diabetes * Sedentary lifestyle * Having given birth to a baby weighing more than 4.1kg or diabetes in pregnancy * High blood pressure * Increased blood cholesterol (hypercholesterolaemia) * Polycystic ovary syndrome.
FEEL-GOOD FACTOR
one aspect that requires attention. High blood pressure and high cholesterol frequently cause more serious problems than those caused by high blood sugar. Compared to the non-diabetic population, diabetics are two to three times more likely to suffer a heart attach or stroke. For this reason, people with diabetes often require medication to control blood pressure or cholesterol levels to reduce their risk of heart attack or stroke.
We recommend a blood test to rule out diabetes in individuals who are overweight and have one of the other risk factors. At HC Marbella we recommend a blood test to rule out diabetes in individuals who are overweight and have one of the other risk factors. Patients without the above mentioned risk factors should be tested from the age of 45. HOW IS DIABETES TREATED? There are many drugs that can be used to control blood glucose levels. Some people need to take tablets
which help the body produce more insulin or which help the insulin to be more effective. Others need medication which cannot be taken orally but needs to be given via a small injection. This includes insulin and a new group of drugs known as GLP-1 receptor agonists. Prevention of the problems which can be caused by diabetes is important and can be achieved by keeping blood glucose within normal limits. However this is only
It is not only medication that is an important tool in the management of diabetes. We also recommended that sufferers should follow a Mediterranean Diet. This includes plenty of fruit, vegetables and wholegrain cereals with a limited amount of meat, fried foods or foods rich in saturated fat (or ‘bad’ fats). It is also important to take regular physical exercise and avoid being overweight. If you are a smoker, then it will be immensely helpful if you give this up as soon as possible, since it has been shown also to help people with diabetes to remain healthy. CAN DIABETES BE PREVENTED? It is possible to reduce the likelihood of developing diabetes. The most important thing that you can do is to control your weight and avoid obesity. If you are already diabetic, losing weight can improve your health and help to control your blood sugar levels. Physical exercise also aids in prevention and control of the disease. HC MARBELLA. You Can’t Help GETTING OLDER But you don’t have to
GET OLD Time waits for no man - or woman, for that matter - and the physical changes our bodies go through as we approach our later years can creep up on us all too quickly. If you are in the ‘50 years and over’ category then it is likely the signs of ageing have started to make themselves known. Joints feel stiff and less mobile, certain body parts start to lose their tone and simple daily tasks begin to feel much more challenging. The good news is this is all very normal, so there is no need to feel bad about yourself. The even better news is that all these physical changes can be managed and often improved with regular exercise.

All these physical benefits ultimately add up to one important vital sign of healthy life; the ability to move. As we progress through life many of the movements and physical capabilities we develop throughout childhood can be lost through inactivity, injury and poor lifestyle choices and, for many people, this can mean the effects of ageing take hold much sooner than they should. Without the ability to move in the way nature intended, many of the things we wish to do in life become more and more difficult. Thankfully the human body is an amazing organism and, with the right stimulus, high quality movement can be re-learned at almost any age. But it is more than that. As we grow older our priorities and motivations change. People start to let go of their earlier self image (maybe one that was more concerned with a flat stomach and toned arms) and start seeking personal fulfilment from more meaningful endeavours. The things that matter most start to come into focus and it can be a great time of life to start to find some balance.
As an important study by researchers from Harvard has shown, our long term health and happiness is underpinned and often dependent upon our ability actively to seek out and grow meaningful and loving relationships with friends and family. Achieving all of these things as we age is so much more realistic if we stay active. Without a strong, healthy and capable body we run the risk of isolating ourselves and missing out on all of the important things that keep us young and fulfilled. Here at Matt Roberts we pride ourselves on understanding the importance of good movement and how to help people achieve it, regardless of their age. We also understand the importance of building strong and meaningful relationships with our clients and the effect our work together can have on their lives and relationships outside of the gym. If you are a more senior member of the population and you would like some help and guidance with regard to staying active and exercising in a safe and effective way, then contact a fitness professional for guidance.

We are once again joined by Reflections’ celebrity hairstylist Jonathan Yeadon, whose A-List clientele includes Victoria Beckham and Simon Cowell. Jonathan is loved not only for his mind-blowing colouring skills but his outrageous personality as well.
Keeping It This month Jonathan shares his salon snippets on hot receptionists, cloning nail technicians, hunting for a good hair stylist and brassy blonde clients.
T
he search goes on... and on...and on. How hard is it to get good staff these days? It’s never been easy, but these days it seems more difficult than ever. No matter what we do, who we speak to or where we post our job opportunity for a creative hair stylist and an experienced nail technician, we seem to be getting nowhere fast. We are receiving CVs daily but they all seem to be from fruitcakes. I am seriously thinking about rewriting our application form to include the following question: do you suffer from

any recognised or even unrecognised psychiatric illnesses? Is it me that is putting people off or am I expecting a miracle? Why are people so frightened of hard work these days? ‘Hard work’ seems to have become an alien concept. As soon as they find out how many hours I put in, they head to the hills. I am not saying that mine is the only way but it seems to equal success! We get so many stylists coming and going I don’t usually bother to learn their names until they have been with us for at least six months.
Is it a constant theme in my life; boyfriends and staff – I can’t seem to keep either. We had the mini exodus (which we do NOT mention) and then there was the highly skilled colourist who took sick leave but, 10 days later, was spotted moonlighting on EasyJet. Believe me when I tell you orange is NOT his colour. Finally I thought I had finally found myself a little gem, who actually turned out to be more of a polished rock. As soon as she walked through the door I took to her and those who know me well will know how unusual that is. It could have just been her accent though, because the only other

northerner is our receptionist, Lottie and that all depends on what day it is or who she is talking to. And then the biggest disappointment of all came when my so-called gem messaged me to say she had gone back to Manchester as her Nan was ill, but she would be back at work in a week. This was soon followed by the best resignation letter ever - which she posted on Facebook! To add salt to the wound she then unfriended me and the rest of the staff on Facebook which these days must be the ultimate insult. It used to be getting a drink poured over your head in a nightclub, now it’s a Facebook unfriending.
Lottie or send your CV directly to : john@reflectionsmarbella.com, Sane applicants only please! Keep your hat on With summer in full swing many of you have been cooking yourself on the beach and coming in with J-Lo style tans. However, if you are the colour of Madge from Benidorm and sit in my chair telling me your hair colour has faded you will probably receive a few choice words before being told to BUY A HAT! In fact, buy nine or 10 or even start a collection. Whether it’s a Philip Treacy or a cheap and cheerful straw hat from Mercadona, I don’t care. Just keep it on your head when in the sun. If your hair has gone that nice Grotbags green, forget about walking around with ketchup on your head no-one wants to see that. What you need is the Paul Mitchell Shampoo Three €14,63 which deeply cleanses, removing chlorine, iron and minerals and helps prevent swimmers’ ‘chlorine green’. Your hair will feel like you have been at it with a Brillo pad but it does exactly what it says on the tin. Follow this with (and this goes for all of you sun worshippers), Kérastase Masque Force Architecte €38,00 The rich formula of this mask has been specially formulated to reconstruct hair that is in need of a little TLC, leaving your locks smooth and soft. You know me, I am always one to wave the Kérastase flag and this is a summer must-have.
However, we have finally found a superb nail technician. Yes, I can hear you all breathing a sigh of relief. I knew that if I heard reception say, “I am afraid we have no available nail appointments” just one more time I was going to have pick up a nail file myself. We can blame part of this on Kazumi, since if she wasn’t so damn good at her job Reflections wouldn’t have such a great reputation for nail work. Anyway - drum roll, please - the latest addition to the Reflections team is...Jeannine! I love her and basically want to clone her. Her work is excellent and she has a great, professional attitude. Thankfully she is taking some of the strain away from poor Kazumi, who was going in a downward spiral till she got some help, bless her. We have tried everywhere else, so maybe we will have some better luck with Society Marbella readers. If you are a skilled hair stylist or an experienced nail technician and would like to work in one of the most established salons on the Coast, please call reception and speak so Tina or

Hottie Lottie I think we need to talk about our receptionist, Lottie’s sudden boost in popularity. She has been receiving so much male attention of late that she needs to employ her own security team. In fact, Lottie is so hot right now she is in danger of spontaneously combusting. Basically, she finally listened to me and got rid of the boyfriend. I told her that if she did this the universe would provide - well, I didn’t think it would provide her with all these bloody flowers. Daily deliveries to the salon are like a bullet to my heart so, to cheer myself up, I confiscate them ‘til further notice. Well, The Lotsta hasn’t got any decent vases so it’s only for the best that I take them home. Well that’s what I keep telling myself anyway. Ta-ra! Love Jonathan

THE EVOLUTION OF THE BATHING SUIT The history of swimwear began long before the modern day bikini. In the 19th century, swimming suits consisted of up to six pieces of clothing, including stockings, which were used by both men and women. These bathing suits could weigh more than five kilograms when wet - even more in the case of women, as they included small pieces of lead to weigh down their skirts when entering the sea, a feature which caused more than a few drownings. Cotton, silk, wool, everything was
a possibility, as long as it was black, navy or red - colours that water didn’t render transparent. In 1907 the first great swimwear trend began when the Australian swimmer, Annette Kellerman jumped into the sea sporting a one-piece swimsuit. She was arrested for this public scandal, but managed to draw the world’s attention towards the need for lighter clothing. At this time the growing popularity of railroads led to seaside resorts becoming increasingly accessible to the general
public. Into this new world came a new, fashionable sensibility in the resorts of San Sebastian, Bournemouth and Deauville, where a young Coco Chanel opened a boutique to sell fresh linen dresses and nautical style shirts. This enterprising woman would become the inventor of nautical spirit. In the 1920s, men and women no longer wore stockings on the beach and men increasingly dispensed with the top part of their swimsuits while also revealing more than half of their legs; women’s bathing suits became tighter and shorter. Two decades later came the emphasis of curves, with cups, V-necks, and lots of leg, thanks to the first ever presentation of the bikini in Paris by Louis Reard, which caused both scandal and surprise. However, in 1962, the whole world fell silent and admired Ursula Andress in Dr. No, emerging from the sea in an incredible two-piece designed by Tessa Prendergast, which effectively heralded the era of twopiece dominance.

SPORTY CHIC Whether you surf, dive, swim, play beach volleyball, or do any kind of watersport, owning a bikini that stays put is a necessity. A comfortably fitting swimsuit allowing ease of movement and plenty of coverage is essential.
72
Therefore, look for a swimming top that offers support and is fixed - avoid sliding triangle tops. The bottom needs to have either double side ties, thick and secure elastic sides, or a drawstring which allows you to you tighten the bathing
suit so that it doesn’t ride up or slide down. Don’t forget a hat to protect your head and a pair of matching sunglasses to protect your eyes and complete your gorgeous look!

FEMININE FLORALS Florals have been in season for as long as we can remember, as their feminine and romantic appeal is eternal. One of the Summer 2016 swimwear trends is the high-waisted bikini bottom. Although they have been in since 2015, they are a retro swimwear staple - especially when they fall right under the belly button for an exceedingly pretty and flattering figure. Strapless bandeau bikini tops and halternecks are perfect for accentuating curves and bringing attention to the top of your body. Add a long, lightweight skirt to give your look a final glamorous and feminine touch.

COLOUR EXPLOSION If you’re feeling daring and already have an amazing tan, go for colourful swimsuits that will accentuate your skin colour and give you a fun, playful look. Trikinis are very versatile statement pieces that can translate from a perfect swimsuit at a beach club, to a gorgeous top when paired with flowing trousers and the right accessories. Triangle bikinis with a V-neckline will draw the eye up and out, creating an hourglass figure. Whatever your choice, enjoy this summer with your favourite swimwear piece and a gorgeous smile!

SPIN CYCLE YOUR LIFE AT THE LAUNDERETTE PUERTO BANÚS We attended…
The launch party of The Launderette, an exciting new venue in Puerto Banus where you can wash the cares of the week away. This laid back venue has fab food, freaky cocktails and funky music every day of the week and on the launch night it was packed out Marbella’s party people enjoying the night of their lives.
We loved…
The bath and rubber duck cocktail ‘glasses’ and the best Long Island Tea we’ve ever tasted. The contemporary interior with its nod to 1950s Americana has a youthful vibe and we all agreed that this is a perfect meeting spot for after-work or pre-cinema drinks. The menu, which is a burger lover’s dream also features other classics of gourmet American dining, making it the place to eat in Banús any time of the day.
We danced to…
Some cutting edge tunes spun by one of the best known DJs in Marbella, Russell Soden and admired the fire eaters’ ‘hot’ performance.
We nibbled on…
The amazing assortment of delicious canapés that included very tasty mini tomato and cheese tartlets and finished with miniature tiramisu cakes that totally satisfied everyone’s sweet tooth.
Congratulations to…
Chef Antonio, chief pamperer Adrian and the entire Launderette team. You’ve put our tastebuds in a spin and we’ll be back to work our way through the whole ‘cycle’ another time.

The funky and refreshing cocktail creations, including Yuzu Beer, Asian Cooler and Joe’s Volcano. The staff were also amazing to look at with their hipster fashions and body art.
Congratulations to…
Jorge Manzur, Dillys and the Joe’s Bar team, you have managed to keep the cool ethos of the old bar and brought the food and drinks right up to date. This is definitely going to be the place to be seen once again!

VAMOS A LA PARRILLA! We attended…
A fabulous feast of authentic Basque cuisine hosted by Restaurante La Parrilla on Marbella’s Golden Mile on a gloriously sunny Saturday in June.
We tucked into…
The most succulent Iberian ham, cooked and sliced by the restaurant’s chefs, a very tasty red sea bream and Ox T-bone steaks that were to die for.
We indulged in…
The mouth-watering selection of desserts that was so tempting we tried them all!
We were impressed by…
The delectable selection of Basque wines that accompanied this appetising outdoor dining occasion.
We loved…
The wonderfully friendly atmosphere that made this gathering feel like a family feast.
Congratulations and thanks to…
The team at La Parrilla – you truly did the Basque country’s cuisine proud!

THERE’S A NEW GRILL IN TOWN We attended...
The opening of Porterhouse, Nueva Andalucía’s newest grill house. We were very impressed by this new restaurant, which aims to provide a cosy, friendly venue where great food is guaranteed.
We loved...
The interior, which had been designed by those clever people at FOC and the service, which was friendly and meant that there was no point at which we weren’t holding a full glass!
We nibbled...
On chorizo, pancetta and succulent mini-burgers, all of which had a wonderfully fresh and local flavour and which were tasters featured on the menu.
We were entertained by...
Some great vocal work by Tabitha, which created a relaxed ambience.
We agreed...
That we would be back soon to try out the amazingly extensive menu.

SUMMER PARTY AT VILLA TIBERIO IN AID OF CHILDREN WITH CANCER UK We attended…
A delightful Summer Party at the always fabulous Villa Tiberio where generous donors from Marbella and along the coast flocked to help organisers Caroline Coley, Jason Haigh-Ellery and Faith Baxter-Hague raise money for the charity Children with Cancer UK.
We were greeted…
By a wonderful champagne reception in the Villa Tiberio’s beautiful gardens that got the evening off to a perfect start. It is the ninth year that owner SAndro Morelli has hosted a party at the restaurant for the Children with Cancer UK charity.
We thoroughly enjoyed…
The amazing dinner served ‘al fresco’ and the fantastic after-dinner entertainment by the performers who all gave their services free of charge. These included singers Zoe Hughes, Helena Paul, Mel Williams, Lucy Joanne, Frankie Valentine, Vicky Jay, Rochelle, Simone & Mr Maph and S Elvis. Charlotte Jaconelli, Lauren Samuels, Claire Buckle and Sophie Evans, stars from London’s West End, also turned up to add even more sparkle to the evening. And after all the entertainment we danced until late under the stars.
We were impressed by…
Scottish comedienne Jane Godley who was host for the evening, and with local performer Steve Cline’s skills as an auctioneer and games master.
Congratulations and a big thanks to…
Sandro Morelli, Caroline, Jason and Faith plus the teams of volunteers who ensured that the evening was such a huge success and raised much-needed funds for the children’s charity.

AN ANDALUSIAN EXTRAVAGANZA EL PATIO - DANI GARCIA We attended…
The launch of El Patio Dani Garcia at the Puente Romano Resort & Spa. Naturally, when one of Spain’s most famous chefs is at the helm of a fiesta of flavour and entertainment you just know that it’s going to be amazing. And it certainly was!
We were awed by…
Dani Garcia’s creative interpretation of traditional Andalusian cuisine that combined rich flavours, fresh local ingredients and a stunning presentation matched by an equally dramatic service. We certainly won’t forget it in a hurry!
We were spellbound…
By the evening’s cabaret performed by Andalusia’s top musicians. This included our favourite tunes by The Gypsy Kings and a spectacular flamenco show created for the occasion by Aitana of Córdoba, one of Spain’s up-andcoming young dancers. The sizzling hot fire show, the acrobats, stilt walkers and jugglers also kept everyone entertained throughout the evening.
We were delighted…
To see so many Marbella socialites of all ages thoroughly enjoying themselves and there was a real sense of excitement among the guests about the ways in which this new venture adds even more glamour to the Marbella scene.
Congratulations to…
Dani Garcia and the Puente Romano for introducing this fabulous entertainment and dining experience to Marbella. We had a fantastic time!

I MOSH YOU! Photos by Pedro Jaen
We attended…
The grand opening of the newest, hottest place in town – that’s MOSH in Aloha. With its contemporary, funky vibe and all black dress code for the party, this was an evening that definitely put the ‘youth’ back in Marbella.
We purred at…
The sexy Catwoman hostesses who greeted us at the door and the naked, body-painted Catwoman crawling on the roof!
We nibbled on…
The most divine sushi and sipped on sophisticated cocktails, which were offered to everyone in abundance throughout the event.
We loved…
The imaginative hip-hop dancer entertainment and the cleverly branded plates, cups and glasses, plus the exciting use of light throughout the restaurant.
We admired…
The stunning interior décor and the beautiful outdoors terrace with garden, which is perfect for an intimate dinner or a private party. Plus, the open kitchen and long tables combined with fun messages like “Eat, Drink, Party, Repeat” and “MOSH made me do it” projected on the walls created a contemporary urban vibe that brings a bit of London and New York funk to Marbella.
Congratulations to…
The team at MOSH for such a fantastic and unforgettable party. You’re the new ‘in place’ for Marbella’s bright young things - we’ll be back to visit you soon!

GETAWAY CAR McLaren’s new GT is more than just a sportcar for high days and holidays

G
ran Turismo. These two evocative Italian words are a tribute to the tradition of the ‘grand tour’ in automobiles able to convey their occupants over long distances at highspeed in comfort and style.
at 120km/h with impressive refinement in the seventh of its forward ratios. Of course it feels decidedly under utilised at that modest speed, and the tranquillity in the plush cabin is little changed at 140 or 160km/h.
To qualify as a GT, a car has to either have a two or 2+2-seating arrangement, adequate luggage space, be able to cruise on motorways with an aura of refinement, and also be engaging for the driver when a twisty road beckons. This is the remit of the McLaren 570GT, the latest addition to their Sports Series.
Certainly a small prod on the throttle at 120km/h brings you those bigger numbers in the blink of an eye, and were it not for posted speed limits, the 570GT can clearly take big chunks out of continental sized distances with ease. The relative lack of road noise and the super audio system only add to this feeling.
In aesthetic terms, the 570GT is the most attractive McLaren yet, and replacing the flying buttresses of the S model with the so-called ‘Touring’ deck gives the impression this car is carved from the solid or even moulded.
Drop a gear or two and prod the throttle hard however, and the flipside of the 570GT coin comes to the fore as its two turbochargers spool up and its deep lungs exhale with convincing fervour.
“The way the glass roof and the rear hatch flow as one neatly reduces the visual mass of the upper half, giving an impression of low weight and studied sleekness.”
The way the glass roof and the rear hatch flow as one neatly reduces the visual mass of the upper half, giving an impression of low weight and studied sleekness. It is a smoother and altogether more homogenous design that works from every angle, with a calm and self assured elegance that I find very appealing. Style is a gift and this car has it in spades. Of course this change in shape of the rear deck also alters the aerodynamics and the way the airflow detaches from the cars rear end. The subtle lip spoiler at the end of the panel under the rear glass hatch creates a low-pressure zone over the grille, which helps to extract hot air from the engine bay, as well as increasing the speed of airflow towards the tail spoiler lip. This lip has the same angle as on the 570S, but is 10mm taller to compensate for the change in airflow pattern that nominally increases lift over the rear axle. In the end, and in line with the GT’s mission as a road car rather than a track day tool, it ends up with zero lift over each axle at 200km/h, as opposed to the positive downforce generated at each end of the 650S. The 570GT does exactly what it says on the tin, whistling along the motorway
The fat torque curve shoves this relatively light car towards the horizon with a vengeance as the soundtrack behind your head increases in its intensity and harmonic purity, the rev counter needle eagerly flying to the redline in the lower gears. The counterpoint is the GT’s hardly diluted ability to tackle challenging roads littered with curves of all radii. For best effect, I went Active and set the Engine/Powertrain and Chassis knobs to Sport. Track setting for the chassis is too edgy on real world roads with bumps and off-cambers, so Sport/Sport proved to be exactly right for the occasion. Set up this way, the GT shows its true mettle with fabulous chassis composure over bumps and the ability to put its power down convincingly coming out of bends. In moving away from the track centric focus of the 650S and 675LT towards a brief with the emphasis on more civilised and practical daily use, the McLaren 570S that we drove last October actually turned out to be more engaging at normal road speeds, while not giving away much in terms of useable performance on public roads.
127
TORQUE TALK
While the secondary ride of the 570S is very good, there are definitely occasions where the active system of the 650S simply does a better job of isolating the car from road shocks and maintaining perfect composure. This more sophisticated and more expensive system makes a good attempt at being almost all things to all men.
128
However, in the overall scheme of things, bereft of the active damping and anti-roll bar system that is the cornerstone of the 650S chassis design, McLaren’s engineers have still done an amazing job in achieving as good a ride as they have with conventional suspension components. Subjectively, the 570S retains at least 80-percent of the outstanding ride
comfort of its bigger brother, while its conventional steel springs, hydraulic dampers and hollow tubular steel antiroll bars actually convey a more direct and connected feel to your finger tips and the seat of your pants. Where electronically controlled active suspension can be tweaked to extend both ends of its performance spectrum, the curve of a conventionally sprung Sports

“We were looking for the best possible gas-flow dynamics from the heads, turbochargers and exhaust system to produce the right ‘music’, and this involved careful tuning of frequencies and harmonics to achieve a rising and emotionally involving crescendo directly related to engine speed.”
Series model can only be moved up or down. The big question is always exactly how far before either ride or handling is unacceptably compromised?
By backing off spring rates 15% in front and 10% at the rear, and slowing down the steering ratio by two-percent to compensate, the new 570GT adds even more comfort and practicality to the mix. Importantly, it does so without prejudicing dynamic ability on the road even if its lap times on track suffer slightly as a result. With its slightly diminished bias towards racetrack driving, this extra measure of suspension compliance gives the GT even more talent to deal with imperfect roads. On our demanding test route around Tenerife, it quickly became apparent that the GT’s chassis takes in its stride some road imperfections that would make the driver of its sportier sister feel somewhat less relaxed. Another thing you notice when you drive the 570GT for the first time is the lack of road noise for a car of this type. McLaren worked closely with Pirelli on this and the result is the bespoke PZero with RCN (Road Noise Cancellation) technology. A layer of foam inside these tyres absorbs what subjectively appears to be at least 6dB of road induced NVH. Empirical numbers aside, the result is the acute absence of an aural intruder that unconsciously adds to stress and tiredness over distance. Mechanically, the 3,799cc twin-turbo M838TE flat-plane crank V8 is identical to the one in the 570S, with the same healthy 570hp at 7,500rpm, and 600 Nm of torque from 5,000 to 6,500rpm. At 1,495kg (DIN), the 570GT is 55kg heavier than its 570S sibling, but still significantly lighter than all its class rivals. Against the stopwatch, this Sports Series car is marginally slower than the 570S, with a 0-100km/h time of 3.4 sec (3.2 sec), 0-200km/h in 9.8 sec (9.5 sec). Its top speed of 328km/h (204mph) and 42/58 percent front/rear weight distribution are unchanged. Helping the cause is the smooth and rapid 7-speed SSG twin-clutch gearbox, whose steering wheel mounted paddle shift action, has a satisfyingly high level of tactile precision. The engineers put a lot of work into tuning the GT’s exhaust note. McLaren has come a long way from the flat and emotion lacking sounds of the MP412C, and the GT’s twin pipes produce a much fuller and more mellifluous soundtrack.
130
TORQUE TALK
Unlike with a front-engine car, where the resulting sound responds to small changes to its rear silencer boxes, the amount of work required to get the GT’s soundtrack behind your head to produce just right notes at all engine and road speeds was something of a command performance. “This starts with the cylinder heads and involves the equal length tubular exhaust manifolds, as well as the design of the pipes and rear silencer,” explained Richard Farquhar, McLaren Automotive’s Powertrain Director. “We were looking for the best possible gas-flow dynamics from the heads, turbochargers and exhaust system to produce the right ‘music’, and this involved careful tuning of frequencies and harmonics to achieve a rising and emotionally involving crescendo directly related to engine speed.” McLaren seems to have nailed it as far as their interiors are concerned, easily eclipsing the Italians in both design and build quality. The GT’s cabin is similar to the S’s, with ingress and egress aided by the same lower and narrower sills and wider opening doors that debuted with that model. However, the sense of light and space in the cabin is considerably lifted by the 18-percent-tinted glass panoramic roof, which the GT shares with the mighty P1. The supportive seats work very well over distance, and thanks to the height and reach adjustment of these seats and the steering wheel I was able to find exactly the right driving position for many comfortable hours behind the wheel.

TORQUE TALK
The beautifully trimmed rear compartment under the side hinged glass cover adds an additional 220 litres of luggage space. Even here there are choices. As in the cabin, you can have Nappa leather or Alcantara trim for the ‘Touring deck’, but either way runners and a retaining loop help to keep your luggage in place. As expected, you can also have a set of bespoke luggage to maximise the use of space. If you are afraid of scratching the paint as you lean over the wide rear wings to load and unload your luggage, McLaren offer a plasticised coating to protect the paint finish.
Where the 570S comes with a four-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system as the entrylevel of three, the GT gets the eight-speaker mid-range system as standard. That said both my test cars had the top-of-the range 1,280 Watt, 12-speaker system, which proved dynamic and musically engaging, with pretty convincing sound staging. Retuned for the different cabin volume and acoustics of the GT, the system seemed more effortless than in the 570S, especially on the move. The lower noise floor from the new Pirelli tyres certainly contributes to its perceived superior dynamic range and resolution of fine detail in the music at moderate sound pressure levels. With their entry-level Sports Series models, McLaren now makes some of the best looking and best driving cars in their class, which also offer outstanding value
for money against their rivals. With the 570GT, the company now has a gorgeous looking car that you really can use every day, and comfortably drive across a continent if you so wish. Looking far down the road, McLaren are well aware that making too many cars will hurt both exclusivity and residual values. Thus, total production of all models has been capped at between 4 and 5,000 cars a year, and the dealer network is focused on looking after their clients. Beyond just making and selling some of the best sport scars in the world, McLaren is intent on building their brand equity, and that can only be good news for the people who appreciate this and sign up to be part of the family.

Each of Alejandro’s pieces is imbued with his personality; sometimes he uses cinematographic references or raises social issues, but his messages are all positive and full of hope.

e look at art. We think about art. We talk about art. We watch films about art. The romantic notion of the tortured artist spending stormy nights hurling his emotions onto the canvas to create the perfect painting is a much loved stereotype. But art is not just a dream, nor is it a aspirational concept merely for the creative. If the nearest you have come to hanging an interesting piece on your wall is a 55 inch flat-screen TV, then perhaps you’d better take notice.

While arguably intimidating at first, the world of art is very much accessible to all and should most definitely be accessed by everyone. A home is not a home without at least one piece of art and this needn’t be confined to oil paintings - photography, sculpture, murals, even lighting can all be considered art and if you feel that something is missing from your home, this could be it.

WHERE
TO START?
Tapiz Llengües Blau
Depending on your reason for acquiring art, there are a few ways of going about it. You can start at the easy end; most décor shops provide a relatively broad spectrum of styles and prices but these are usually just framed prints. While these may be a cost effective way of brightening up an area and providing a focal point in a room they lack the quality of an original piece. The first thing people want to do in a gallery is get up very close to the work (although it’s not always advisable) because there is something magical about being able to touch and smell the medium used on the canvas; it can be almost like reliving the emotion of the moment of creation itself. If you have a large wall you can opt for something grand, an impact piece and topic of discussion. If you are stretched for wall space, try a few smaller, strategically placed pieces. You can contact galleries to enquire about professional hanging and, especially with the larger or more expensive pieces, this is certainly advisable.

HOW
DO I CHOOSE? Starting completely from scratch can be a little daunting, so narrow down the options by asking all your friends in the know. Even if they don’t have a vast knowledge of art and art history you might just love their style, so ask them where they buy art and the kind of things they like. If you are unsure what it is that you are looking for and feel overwhelmed, do your research on up-and-coming artists. Art is subjective and what some might love you might hate, so don’t be put off by other’s opinions. Ultimately it’s you that has to live with it and the piece should speak to you every time you see it. Start by identifying galleries that you can visit to get a feel for what is available - this way you can liaise with both gallerist and artist and it is good to establish relationships. The best galleries are open and accessible and you shouldn’t feel like your needs are not being considered.
156
Take your time to shop around, because you might start to notice your mind wandering back to a particular piece and if you keep thinking about it, it’s probably the one. If you want a piece that could turn into an investment, try to find artists that have been written about. The most exciting young artists will have press following their movements and it is always intriguing to see where an artist has come from and where they plan on going. Exposing yourself to many different styles will broaden your perspective and knowledge and you will soon find that you can make split second decisions on a subject that was once thoroughly confusing. Don’t forget that students often hold private viewings, so keep in the loop with local universities and make sure you are on the mailing list for all their shows. This is a brilliant way to snap up affordable art, while giving students a helping hand.

HOW
DO I SHOW MY ARTWORK OFF? You’ve chosen the item and now you need to place it. If you already have a space in mind and know its dimensions, find a professional to help you. You can contact galleries to enquire about professional hanging and, especially with the larger or more expensive pieces, this is certainly advisable. If your piece is a sculpture then consider buying a custom made plinth and some clever lighting. Art benefits from directional light and this is something that can usually be added, assuming there is an accessible electrical feed. Using your garden or pool area is also an option, since sculptures can totally transform your outside spaces. Ultimately, buying art should be an exciting experience and, much like your first day at school, there are bound to be jitters. Embrace them and take the plunge, it might just be the stepping stone to a new and exciting opportunity to revamp your home while learning more about the vast subject of art.

castle in s pain
By Eleanor McKenzie
is a romantic dream that has inspired writers and musicians for centuries. For residents of Marbella, and those living along the Costa del Sol who don’t mind a slightly longer journey, the dream is on our doorstep in the lovely village of Monda, which is a mere 15-minute drive from the coast into the Sierra de las Nieves. You will know you are nearing Monda when you spot the magnificent and imposing Castillo de Monda, a landmark that sits above the village providing views all the way to Málaga and the Mediterranean that would have enabled the original residents to spot any unwelcome invaders approaching well in advance. The castle is built on the foundations of “Al-Mundat” an Arab fortress from the 9th century and one of the original towers is still visible, along with parts of the foundations, throughout the hotel. There’s nothing like a bit of Andalusian history combined with the promise of some very exciting cuisine to whet the appetite, and the SOCIETY team enthusiastically high-tailed it up the road to Monda anticipating an
168
extraordinary experience. We were not disappointed. The castle is now a boutique hotel and restaurant managed by three Dutch gentleman with substantial experience in the hospitality industry and an unwavering passion for their new venture. They are Maryn Gerrits, Jaap Schaafsma and Arjan van de Vrande. Some of you may remember Maryn and Jaap from the Santa Fe hotel and restaurant in Coín and at Castillo de Monda, Jaap is in charge of the kitchens and menu design. Maryn takes care of the finances, sales and marketing, while Arjan oversees the day-to-day operations and staffing. They are a formidable threesome and their dedication to this venture and vision of the potential of this venue is so infectious that as a guest you feel confident you will receive the best of everything at the Castillo. It is a wonderful location for a romantic weekend break, or for dinner any night of the week, which brings me to the reason we were there: the Albacar restaurant, which promises fine dining in an informal setting and international cuisine with a Mediterranean twist. The spacious, light and airy dining area has all the modern comforts but the Moorish vibe is present everywhere in the tiling and archways of the interior to the fountains and patio garden layout of the exterior to create an exotic ambience and an extra special dining experience. The imaginative menu is also extraordinary. We were delighted to see that in addition to fish and meat dishes there is also a selection of vegetarian starters and main courses, which means you can
happily invite guests who prefer not to eat meat or fish and know that they are catered for. We started with a refreshing traditional Italian salad of tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, basil and balsamic vinegar. It was a perfect balance of flavours as was the fabulous seabass ceviche with coriander, lime and grapefruit gel that produced a citrus explosion in the mouth. Top quality fish is vital for a good ceviche and this certainly passed the test. Oysters and skipjack tuna were also on the fish starter menu and if we could have fitted them all in, we certainly would have. Meat lovers are sure to be tempted by the steak tartare lukewarm mayonnaise with ras el hanout and croutons, the quails, bacon, chives and honey or the Spanish charcuterie. With so much to choose from we were in danger of not arriving at the main course, so we made the tough decision not to explore every single item from the starters, or the very tempting salads, including a classic Caesar salad and a goat cheese with beetroot, walnuts and honey vinegar that sounded extremely appealing as well as healthy. But by now we were combing the rest of the menu and debating whether to try the rib eye, the rack of lamb or the duck breast with chicory, apple and balsamic vinegar. Or, go for one of the trio of fish dishes that included a fillet of cod, skipjack tuna with mussels and baked peppers or the restaurant’s signature Paella de Castillo. Vegetarian options include a sublime risotto with peas, broad beans and truffle and gnocchi, parmesan foam, basil and cherry tomatoes. Decisions, decisions! We finally agreed on the rack of lamb and lamb shoulder with tarragon and aubergines and the cod fillet with mustard, spinach and potato.
COSTA CUISINE
Every bite of these culinary delights was a moment of pure pleasure that we all hoped would never end, even though it was clear by this point that our eyes were bigger than our stomachs and some of us were glad we’d opted for loose fitting outfits. And, we had not quite arrived at dessert! Should we be good we asked ourselves and order the strawberries marinated in balsamic with marshmallow and lemon sorbet, the cheese platter with fig bread, or opt for the chocolate truffle cake with grapefruit gel, and crunchy hazelnuts or the anis-flavoured crème brûlee with citrus sorbet? This reviewer is particularly passionate about crème
brûlee, so that was a no brainer. When it arrived it was of such a high standard with a topping ‘crunched’ to perfection that I’d come back just for that. The chocolate truffle cake was also a taste revelation and both desserts ended a stunning evening on a truly sweet note. Congratulations to Jaap in the kitchen for designing such an outstanding menu and to Maryn and Arjan for delivering an exceptional setting that is sure to attract guests from far and wide to live and eat the dream of a castle in Spain. castillodemonda.com

Our resident food and nutrition expert, Bettina Campolucci Bordi, offers us some healthy alternatives to sugar.
THIS IS THE ISSUE. On the one hand, you have conventionally grown fruit and vegetables; on the other, you have organic fruit and veg. Both look the same, provide vitamins and fibre and are free from fat, sodium and cholesterol. So which should you choose? Get the facts before you shop. The word ‘organic’ refers to the way farmers grow and process agricultural products such as fruit, vegetables, grains, dairy products and meat. Organic farming practices are designed to encourage soil and water conservation and reduce pollution. Farmers who grow organic produce don’t use conventional methods to fertilize and control weeds. Examples of organic farming practices include using natural fertilizers to feed soil and plants and crop rotation or mulch to manage weeds. Different countries have different labelling. Just because a product is
labelled organic doesn’t mean that it is 100 per cent organic. In the UK,
for example, you can label a product organic as long as at least 95 per cent of the farm-grown ingredients are organic.
Spain’s percentage is similar and the country has really climbed onto the organic agricultural bandwagon, seeing a steady increase in the past few years. People are becoming increasingly aware of how their food is produced.
On a personal level I try to buy as much organic produce as possible because I find that it lasts a lot longer, tastes better and I get to support a local community of farmers who are growing some amazing veggies. Scientific studies also prove the point that ‘going organic’ has proven benefits. “Organic food has more of the antioxidant compounds linked to better health than regular food, and lower
170
VERSUS
levels of toxic metals and pesticides, according to the most comprehensive scientific analysis to date.” “The international team behind the work suggests that switching to organic fruit and vegetables could give the same benefits as adding one or two portions of the recommended ‘five a day’. The team, led by Prof Carlo Leifert at Newcastle University, concludes that there are “statistically significant, meaningful” differences, with a range of antioxidants being “substantially higher” – between 19% and 69% – in organic food. It is the first study to demonstrate clear and wide-ranging differences between organic and conventional fruits, vegetables and cereals. “The
crucially important thing about this research is that it shatters the myth that how we farm does not affect the quality of the food we eat,” said Helen Browning, chief executive of Soil Association, which campaigns for organic farming.” - The Guardian
I suppose because buying organic produce has become a trend, some retailers and suppliers tend to take advantage and put the prices up, so I have some tips and tricks on how to make it work.
COSTA CUISINE
Find a local farmer or farmers’ market We are very lucky to live in the garden of Europe. Spanish families still have a habit of shopping at markets where you can find fresh fish, skilled butchers and greengrocers. Ask the shop keepers where the produce comes from and if it is grown organically. I go to Guadalhorce Ecologico, a travelling farmers’ market that visits different locations every Saturday and Sunday. The goods are favourably priced and you can find everything from olive oil to fruit and veggies. They also deliver in Marbella once a week. Find their weekly schedule on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/ guadalhorceecologico/ Subscribe to a Organic Veggie Box Several people prepare and deliver veggie boxes on the Coast. The benefits of a veggie box is that you eat seasonally, you cook with veggies you normally might not choose and you can have it delivered to your door. I have used Los Hortelanos in the past and they are great! Give it a go and get a five Euro discount on your first order by using the discount code BETTINA. https:// loshortelanos.es Quality versus Quantity I have had this conversation many times and it is far more important to me that I buy quality (even though it takes effort to go to a market) rather than quantity. In my humble opinion when something is priced ridiculously low you have to ask yourself - why? How was it produced, by whom and where? As consumers we hold the power over what is being sold to us. It’s a simple theory of supply and demand. If we stop buying the cheap, nasty stuff and demand better, producers and supermarkets will have to comply.

Pancakes
Who doesn’t like pancakes - especially if you can eat them knowing that you are giving your body the best possible nutrition? If we are talking vegan, plant based protein with a good fat ratio, then these are your best breakfast choice, packed with goodness, filling and yummy! I have two versions of these for grown-ups and for kids, because youngsters tend to like sweeter, less complicated flavours.
Ingredients
Method
Dry Ingredients
Preheat your griddle on the stove. You want the surface to be hot, but not so hot that the oil smokes when it makes contact with the surface of the pan.
1tbs Agave nectar 1 tbs Baking powder ½ tbs of Bicarbonate A pinch of Salt 1 cup (120 grams) Buckwheat flour 1/2 cup of Rice flour (120 grams) rice flour
Wet Ingredients
1 Flax egg (1tbsp Flaxseed meal + 2tbsp water) Splash Vanilla extract or Vanilla pods 2 cups (480 grams) Nut milk 1tbs natural salted Peanut butter 1tbs of Virgin Coconut oil – for cooking
172
In a large mixing bowl add your WET ingredients, flaxseed and water and let it set for a minute or two. Then, add the agave, peanut butter, bicarb, baking powder, salt and vanilla extract and whisk. Add almond milk and whisk again until well combined. Next add your DRY ingredients, the rice and buckwheat flour and stir until combined. Let the batter rest for five minutes (or, the batter can be prepped for next day because the pancakes are even tastier if they have rested in the fridge). Lightly grease your griddle and
pour measurements of the batter onto the pan. There should be enough for six pancakes. Flip the pancakes when bubbles appear in the middle and the edges turn slightly dry. Be careful not to burn them. Cook for one to two minutes more on the other side and then top with more peanut butter and a light drizzle of agave. Bananas are sweet and go very well with this dish, as do other fruits. You can make a big batch of these and keep in the fridge to have as a snack on the go or when you travel.

ESPAÑASIA OUSHI TORO AT THE KEMPINSKI BAHÍA By Eleanor McKenzie
T
he Kempinski Bahía with its beautiful beachside location near Estepona and its luxuriant gardens with sparkling swimming pools has taken a radical gastronomic leap forward with its new restaurant Oushi Toro. This is not to say that the existing restaurants at this Kempinski are by any means lacking; this hotel takes the quality of its cuisine very seriously and consistently provides a top quality dining experience in all its restaurants on-site. However, this new venue signals a departure from the traditional approach, and it is brought to diners on the Costa de Sol by new Executive Chef, Raúl Cob Ferrer. First, let me explain the name of the restaurant, which certainly had this reviewer slightly stumped until Chef Raúl explained it. ‘Oushi’ is the Japanese word for bull and ‘Toro’ means ‘belly’ in that language. Of course, we all know that ‘toro’ is Spanish for bull and so the name brings together Japanese and Spanish to create a cuisine that takes Spanish dishes and gives them an Asian twist. If I had to find a name that describes this combination, I’d call it ‘EspañAsia’. The chefs at the Kempinski are known for championing Spanish cuisine and local produce, whether it is fish, meat, vegetables or fruit, and Raúl Cob is another passionate believer in homegrown produce. Prior to his appointment as Executive Chef at the Kempinski Bahía, he was Head Chef at El Faro in the Marsa Malaz Kempinski in Doha, Qatar where he successfully made the restaurant’s Spanish cuisine a big hit with local residents and hotel guests. With his passion for the Mediterranean diet and wild fresh fish, we can safely say that he’s in the right place to showcase this style of dining as well as the local produce. With the innovative Oushi Toro, Cob is bringing what mixologists might call a bit of ‘flair’ to Spanish classics and even the restaurant’s colourful menus are a delightful breakaway from the typical 5* hotel
174
menu. This sense of style is reinforced by the table settings that owe much to a clean, Japanese aesthetic. Clearly, a lot of thought has been given to every visual aspect of an experience in which the food is the star performer for both vision and taste. Restaurant manageress Angelina Ramos, whose attention to detail and her effortless charm with diners is one of the highlights of Oushi Toro, welcomed the SOCIETY team. The kitchen maestro Chef Cob, who immediately made his passion for this new venture evident, then joined us and described his concept, which made us anxious to start eating. By then Angelina and her team had served us all a complimentary glass of Juvé & Camps Reserva; a refined, crisp cava that perfectly matched the starters. If you are in any doubt about what to drink with this menu, just ask the well-versed staff here; they know their wines, and they also understand the power of a good cocktail, which I will come to later. Now to the food. We started with a refreshing amuse bouche of cold pineapple and coconut soup that cleansed the palate in readiness for the starters of Nigiris Andaluces and Sushi al Cubo de Papada Ibérico. The Nigiris Andaluces were a light delight of marinated anchovies Málagueña-

style and Almadraba red tuna; a treat for sushi-lovers! We all agreed that the Sushi al Cubo, which consists of slivers of pork jowl with hoisin sauce and pineapple on sushi rice was simply delicious! Next up was Pipirrana con Usuzukuri de Mero; this is an Andalusian salad of grouper sashimi and Canarian green mojo sauce, which revived the taste buds after the sushi and paved the way for the stunningly tasty Tartar de Langostinos con Yuzu. This blend of avocados and king prawns with an emulsion of yuzu—that’s Japanese lemon— and mango was so good that all of the team would be happy to eat it every day.
By this time Angelina had introduced us to Ariyanas, a delicately fragrant moscatel from the Axarquia region that is surprisingly dry and flawlessly complemented the Tartar and Pipirrana. With the next dish, the Shoyu Ramen de Secreto y Papada Ibérica, which is high quality Iberian pork meat in a classic Chinese Shoyu ramen soup that included the yolk of a hen’s egg and tofu, we were treated to a very fine Pinot Noir Abadia del Poblet from Tarragona. The ramen noodles were perfectly al dente and the theatrical pouring of the broth into our bowls at the table was not lost on those of us who enjoy food as art.
Oushi Toro at the Kempinski Bahía is a pearl of new culinary wisdom on the coast.
And there was more to come. The Gyozas de Rabo de Toro united oxtail with seaweed and an aloe vera salad to excellent effect, while the Takoyakis de Pulpo y Gamba, which are croquettes cooked Japanese style with octopus and prawns from Huelva were just wonderful, and the Huerta de Albala, Taberner 2000 red wine from the province of Cádiz was the perfect accompaniment. As Angelina pointed out, it is very rare to find red wines from this region because the focus is usually on sherry. We followed this with Marmitako de Sashimi de Atún, which is Chef Cob’s take on a classic Basque tuna stew. At this point we were fairly satiated, but thank goodness we had space left for dessert. The Helado Picante de Habas Azuki, which is spicy azuki bean ice cream with mango soup was a sensational explosion of fire and ice in the mouth. At this point Angelina produced a Dai Ginjo Tonic; sake and tonic, that’s a new one for gin lovers, a Dai Ginjo Sunrise, which is sake’s reply to that famous tequila cocktail and Ciruela & Lima; a cocktail of Umeshu Takara Plum, Soda and Lime. I predict a sake revolution!
It’s always a treat to find something that is so different it makes you think about food, especially national cuisines, in a new way and Oushi Toro at the Kempinski Bahía is a pearl of new culinary wisdom on the coast that achieves this very effectively. Kanpai folks!

Paella’s y Mas:
The Terrific Twos! W
hen, in June, the talented team at Paella’s y Mas celebrated the second birthday of this extraordinarily successful and popular restaurant, they could be forgiven a few self-congratulatory moments. In only two years, Head Chef Javier Ponte and his dedicated staff have built a business which already has gained the reputation as being one of the best restaurants in Marbella – in fact, when it comes to Spanish cuisine – it is unquestionably the best. Even in a city which has far more than its fair share of great eating places, ranging from cheap and cheerful family run establishments to posh and pricey joints that tend to pull in celebrities and the seriously wellheeled, Paella’s y Mas stands out. One of the main reasons is its menu, which contains everything that you could possibly want from an authentic Spanish restaurant. Chef Javier learned his craft from his mother and grandmother, both of whom taught him that the key to great cuisine was using the finest available ingredients. He uses these recipes and added creative touches which elevate the simplest dish to new heights, a technique which has customers returning again and again to revisit old favourites and sample new ones.

The Paellas !
Paella’s y Mas is busy throughout the year, but is especially busy during the summer thanks to its gloriously expansive terrace, which is ideal for dining out under the stars. When the sun goes down and the candles are lit, this is one of the most romantic places in town. However, you definitely don’t need to be a couple to make the most of the dishes on offer. This is a place that the SOCIETY Magazine team loves to visit because it delivers the perfect excuse to order a variety of dishes which can then be shared. Diners on a budget are also in luck, because the team can draw up set menus for 30€ which include some tasty and imaginative tapas and paella to share. Your menu can also be personalised depending on what dishes you especially like and adjusted to suit how much you want to spend.
The most popular items on the menu are the 40 plus tapas varieties and the traditional Paellas and Fideuas but, while these are arguably the dishes for which Paella’s y Mas has gained its reputation as Marbella’s culinary capital, they are by no means the only strings to Chef Javier’s bow. Vegetarians will enjoy the range of meat-free options and there is also a section offering grilled meat, fish and seafood, which always proves popular. Since its opening Paella’s y Mas has been a hotspot for gourmands and casual diners alike so, whether you are an aficionado of Spanish cuisine or a beginner who wants to start with the best, we can’t recommend this establishment highly enough.

Rose Salmon Tartare & Pink Champagne Rosé champagne is the drink of lovers, and the ideal drink for summer with its ability simultaneously to cleanse and heighten the palate. More dry than sweet, ranging from delicate and creamy to robust and fruity, pink Champagnes go well with with lobster, salmon, shrimp, and strawberries. They gain their colour and bright, bold flavours from Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes, which are pressed and their skins left to soak in the juice before being blended with Chardonnay grapes for a creamy effervescence, or added as red wine to the finished white Champagne until a pale rose colour is achieved.
D-Wine Dish of the Month Salmon Tartare
Fresh Salmon, Red Onions, Mango, Avocado, Beetroot & Wasabi Sauce with Crispy Toast This is a superb salmon tartare, with a fragrant Asian “note”. The selected ingredients add complexity without overwhelming the delicacy of the fish. The combination of the salmonavocado-mango trio is just perfect, while the overall dish is enhanced by the slightly spicy wasabi sauce. Red onions counter the richness of the salmon and a layer of beetroot locks in the sweetness of the dish. It’s indulgent, yet balanced and extremely tasty.

D-Wine Advice The key to pairing salmon tartare with wine is having a wine with enough acidity and a burst of flavour to complement the bold oily-fishy notes. Rosé Champagne at its best is perfectly balanced and richly structured, clean and slightly sharp, exuberant and beautifully fragrant with freshly picked red berries dancing harmoniously on the palate. The assortment of red fruit, dry, mineral driven character and typically acute acidity in rosé champagnes make for an exceptional salmon tartare pairing partner.

Línea Directa ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE - SAFETY FIRST Imagine a service that goes above and beyond, continually evolving and putting people first. Línea Directa have just launched an exclusive trial of their new Safety First service. If you’re a policy holder with Roadside Assistance cover and live in the province of Malaga, you should read the rest of this article. SAFETY FIRST Línea Directa knows that putting their customers safety first is above and beyond everything else. After dark, if you feel unfit to drive the return journey or you feel that driving further would be hazardous to you, your family and other road users, just call Línea Directa’s Roadside Assistance free-phone number on 900 120 123. HOW DOES IT WORK? There are two types of service you can choose either or both: Safety First People Línea Directa will transport via taxi the policy holder and their passengers to
the policy holder’s home address or a destination specified by the policy holder at the time of requesting the service. The destination must be within a 25km (15.5 mile) limit from the current location. Only one drop-off destination is allowed, there can’t be a different destination for each passenger. The taxi driver will be booked and paid for by Línea Directa and will request confirmation of policy holder and vehicle details. Safety First Car In addition to Safety First People, the policy holder can also request that their vehicle be transported to the same destination point. Simply indicate to the Línea Directa customer service operator that you also require Safety First Car.
FREE OF CHARGE
The service is totally free. It’s available 7 days a week, from midnight to 7am. The service is in English, and uses Línea Directa’s network of English speaking taxi drivers. This trial service runs from 1st May – 31st July 2016.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION The policy holder must identify themselves as being insured by Línea Directa. Please ensure you carry your policy number and relevant ID (either passport or NIE number). On calling, the policy holder must indicate their current location and which services are required. The company will accept the transportation of the policy holder and their companions according to the number of seats available in the taxi. Only one taxi is provided for. This courtesy service can be requested up to 4 times per month for expatriate policy holders of all ages and is independent of the insurance product held. We hope the information provided in this article is of interest. If you would like to contact Línea Directa please call 902 123 462 More information on Línea Directa online at www.lineadirecta.com

GENEROUS DONORS RAISE 37,000€ FOR BUTTERFLY CHILDREN Local boy Luis Lima who has Butterfly Skin told guests his story and thanked everyone for their continued support. Special guest Michael Campbell presented a signed U.S. Open flag for auction and donated €1,000 on behalf of his golf school. He captured the spirit of the evening when he recounted for the audience words that his grandmother taught him as a child: “ We have one hand to take and the other to give.” Once again the generous donors of the Costa del Sol have helped the lives of children living with the debilitating condition known as ‘Butterfly Skin’ or ‘Piel de Mariposa’. DEBRA, the charity supporting ‘Butterfly’ children and their families held its 14th “Butterfly Children Golf and Ball” at the Aloha Golf Course and Clubhouse. Overall, 208 players took part in a round of golf on the Saturday in glorious sunshine on the fabulous Aloha course. This was followed on the Sunday by an evening of wining and dining on the stunning terrace of the Clubhouse, where the 200 guests were also treated to live music and fireworks.
The guests took his words to heart and the weekend events raised €37,000. These funds will help the charity to continue supporting Butterfly Children families all over Spain and enables them to campaign for more help. For example, in 2015 DEBRA managed to secure a commitment from the Government and regional Authorities to supply bandaging materials free of charge that would otherwise cost a family between €200 and €2,000 per month. What a great achievement for DEBRA and if you’d like to know more about this charity and the families it supports visit debra.es.
MCENROE, NOAH AND WILANDER TO STAR AT THE SENIOR MASTERS CUPMARBELLA Put the 22nd-24th September 2016 in your diaries now, because that is when tennis legends John McEnroe, Yannick Noah and Mats Wilander will play at the annual Senior Masters Cup hosted by the Puente Romano Tennis Club. As Albert Costa, the tournament director said, “To have the presence of these three legends of world tennis is a privilege for us and a major contribution to The Senior Masters Cup being one of the most important social and sporting events in Marbella.”
John McEnroe will be forever remembered for his fiery temperament and his brilliant tennis. He said of Marbella, “I’m excited to again have the opportunity to play in Marbella. I have been many times to Puente Romano and each of those visits has been a mixture of great tennis, good weather, great food and lots of atmosphere, so it is surely worth going back to play in Marbella.” French star Yannick Noah is also no stranger to the Puente Romano tennis courts and his response to the invitation to play here again was one of excitement. “I love being able to play and meet my friends on the circuit. Marbella has always known how to treat us so it took me only one minute to say yes. I’ll be there in September, “ said the 1983 Roland Garros champion. And Mats Wilander, the Swedish winner of seven Grand Slams echoed his fellow players with, “I’m looking forward to returning to Marbella. I know the city and its people, and I love them, so I’m sure we’re going to have a great time.”

The matches will be played at night between 7pm – 9pm. Tickets will go on sale in two weeks through the official channel of El Corte Inglés.

INTERNATIONAL COSMETIC SURGERY CONFERENCE COMES TO MARBELLA Leading plastic surgeons from around the world will gather in Marbella this July to discuss best practice in cosmetic surgery. The event will take place over three days (July 28-30) and include presentations from 20 surgeons and specialists from all over Europe and Africa. The Marbella International Plastic Surgery Summer School (MIPSS) will be the first international plastic surgery meeting in the south of Spain. The event is being organised by Dr. Kai Kaye, Head Surgeon at Ocean Clinic Marbella and is endorsed by the Spanish and German national societies for plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery; SECPRE and DGPRAEC. Lecture topics include using a patient’s own fat for breast enlargements and reconstructions, developments in gender reassignment surgery, and the procedure everyone is taking about, the ‘Brazilian butt lift’. Dr. Kaye will lecture on his cutting-edge facelift techniques and demonstrate those techniques by performing live surgery at his clinic on Av Ramon y Cajal in central Marbella. By inviting his colleagues to Spain, Dr. Kaye aims to break away from the large, industry-orientated surgical meetings and better facilitate collaboration. “What we want to create is an annual, face-to-face event where plastic surgeons can share their honest experiences, discuss the pearls and perils of new techniques and contribute presentations within their field of expertise,” he announced to the press.
Plastic & Aesthetic Surgery Orthopaedic Surgery Vascular Surgery “The meeting will be a compact and Bariatric Medicine Surgery condensed two and a&half-days of live surgeries and presentations, allowing and Aesthetic Medicine
specifically aiming for a direct and on-going exchange between all participants.” Fortunately, it won’t be ‘all work and no play for the delegates as the conference will also feature a programme of social events, including a ‘Marbella clubbing experience’ for the young and young at heart. Congratulations to Dr Kaye and Ocean Clinic for successfully bringing such a prestigious international conference to Marbella.

SPECTACULAR SPECTACLES Once upon a time glasses were definitely not a fashion item but, goodness, how that has all changed and spectacle wearing is celebrated throughout the fashion world. The amazing range of designs available now means that wearers can choose a style for every mood and glasses are often a defining part of a person’s image. The annual Costa del Sol Specsavers Spectacle Wearer of the Year Competition promotes the concept of glasses as a fun accessory that has a vital function – allowing spectacle wearers to see! The first prize of 500€ and a pair of designer glasses was awarded to Tynesha Dudgeon, who submitted a sassy, fun picture of herself in her oversized black frames. The judges felt the image really expressed her style and how central her glasses were to her identity. She commented, that she loves her glasses because, “They are a great fashion accessory and now everyone wants to wear glasses!” The judges thought that this was an excellent message. Congratulations to Tynesha. There are also four semi-finalists from the different age categories who have each won one pair of designer glasses worth159€. 1. IMANOL ORTEGA 2. ZLATKA BRODIE 3. JENNIFER FRANKS 4. ANTONIA BELMONTE GÁMEZ They were chosen as runners up in their age categories as they are all proud of wearing glasses and have composed great reasons as to why they love them, along with fantastic pictures of their own style and favourite frames. As the competition winners show, glasses are a wonderful accessory that you can use to follow the latest trends, express your personal style, flatter your face and bring out your eyes. BRITISH AMBASSADOR CALMS BREXIT FEARS Following the United Kingdom’s vote to leave the EU on 23rd June 2016, the British Ambassador to Spain spoke out to allay the fears of British nationals living in Spain. In his statement he said: “I am very aware from the questions that we have been getting that some Britons living in Spain are uncertain about what the Referendum result means for them. As the Prime Minister has said, there is no immediate change. You still have exactly the same rights. You can still live and work here, travel back and forth in the same way, and access Spanish healthcare and other public services just as before. There is no change to your residency status, nor any need for visas for travel to other EU
countries, and you don’t need to change your passport. Your pension rights continue. Leaving the EU will be a gradual process. The Prime Minister will continue to do his job and the UK will only begin negotiations with the European Union after we have a new Prime Minister in October. He or she will have to decide when to start the process of leaving the EU. The negotiations could take two years or more and until they are concluded, the UK remains a full member of the European Union.” A videoclip from the Ambassador can be found on Twitter at @ukinspain and on the British Embassy Madrid’s Facebook page.
ART BY CHILDREN TO HELP OTHER CHILDREN AT KASSER RASSU The well known Kasser Rassu Gallery on Marbella’s Golden Mile hosted an exhibition of work by young artists aged 414 years in support of “Día Internacional de la Protección de los Niños”/ “International Day for Protection of Children”. The young artists taking part, who may be future Picassos, Rembrandts or Kandinskys brought their works, which were filled with creativity, talent and colour to the gallery where visitors flocked to see the charming and often astonishing exhibition. Visitors flew in from Russia and other countries to admire the artworks and were full of praise for the exhibition and the children’s achievements. Art teacher Oksana Kuzmenko was the driving force
who channelled the children’s talent into producing the paintings and drawings while the Marmorin Design Center organised the event that was a success artistically while also drawing attention to the need for children to be protected globally. Unfortunately, the exhibition closed early due to an incident on 9th June. However, thanks to the swift intervention of the Marbella police, none of the young people’s artworks were damaged. Congratulations to all the young artists and thanks to Oksana Kuzmenko and Kira Ashmawi for putting on such an imaginative show.

SALA TAKES TO THE SCOTTISH LINKS
The golf crazy La Sala team took off to Scotland last month to enjoy a few rounds in the sport’s home country. Archerfield Golf Club in Dirleton, East Lothian was the destination for an international match and the La Sala boys were able to showcase their talents on the DJ Russell designed course. Despite four days of heavy rain, the Spanish team was able to give a good account of itself, although the local team ultimately made home advantage count. The singles competition, which was played at Archerfield and West Berwick, was won by La Sala’s David Bentley in a play-off against Rod Spinks, who represented the Scottish team. Think that we’ll call that a draw, then! Everyone who attended thoroughly enjoyed the experience and

revelled in the relaxed atmosphere, camaraderie and the level of challenge presented by the courses. No doubt Team La Sala is already planning its next sporting excursion. salagroupgolf.com
