Whitney Houston

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT This month we pay tribute to the iconic superstar, Whitney Houston

hitney Houston will be remembered as one of the most talented and influential recording artists of all time. With over 170 million combined albums, singles and videos sold worldwide during her career with Arista Records, Whitney Houston established a benchmark for superstardom that will quite simply never be eclipsed in the modern era.

Born into a musical family, Whitney’s success was almost inevitable. Her legendary heritage is as familiar as America’s greatest icons: the daughter of famed singer Cissy Houston and the cousin of singers Dee Dee Warwick and her sister, superstar Dionne Warwick. Whitney’s mother and cousins nurtured her passion for gospel music since birth. As a teenager, Whitney was already singing on the scene in New York. In 1983, near the end of Arista’s first mega-success-

ful decade of operation, Clive Davis was taken to a New York nightclub where Whitney was performing and signed her on the spot. Two years went into the making of her debut album, but the results were worth it. The self-titled Whitney Houston released in March 1985 launched Arista’s second decade, and yielded a string of hits including ‘You Give Good Love’ and three consecutive number one singles, the Grammywinning ‘Saving All My Love For You,’ ‘How Will I Know,’ and ‘The Greatest Love of All.’ Not only did the album establish her as an important new recording artist, but it went on to sell over 12 million copies in the U.S., plus many millions more abroad. The LP set the record as the biggest selling debut album by a solo artist. With the highly anticipated release of her second album Whitney in 1987, she made history as the first female artist to enter the Billboard album charts at number one. The new album soared past nine-times platinum on the strength of four number one chart-toppers. This established Whitney as the only artist ever to have seven consecutive number one hits, surpassing a record previously set by The Beatles and The Bee Gees. Throughout the 1980s, Houston was romantically linked to American football star Randall Cunningham and actor Eddie Murphy, whom she dated. She then met R&B singer Bobby Brown at the 1989 Soul Train Music Awards. After a three-year courtship, the two were married on July 18, 1992. On March 4, 1993, Houston gave birth to their daughter Bobbi Kristina Houston Brown, her only child, and his fourth. Whitney’s third best-selling album ‘I’m Your Baby Tonight’, displayed her versatility on a new batch of tough rhythmic grooves, soulful ballads and up-tempo dance tracks. The album became an international multi-platinum best seller, to the tune of eight million copies worldwide. Whitney made her movie debut in The Bodyguard (1992), in which she co-starred with Oscar-winning actor/director Kevin Costner. The film not only broke box office records worldwide but was ultimately responsible for the biggest selling motion picture soundtrack album of all time, voted the Grammy-winning Album of the Year. The Bodyguard soundtrack album, featuring six Whitney Houston songs in all, has

sold more than 42 million copies worldwide. At 17-times platinum in the U.S., it is the biggest selling motion picture soundtrack album in history, ahead of Saturday Night Fever, Forrest Gump and Titanic. Film work continued with Waiting To Exhale, the critically acclaimed film, starring Whitney with Angela Bassett, Loretta Devine and Lela Rochon, and directed by Forrest Whitaker, went on to gross over $70 million. Whitney’s third motion picture, The Preacher’s Wife, also starring Denzel Washington and Courtney B. Vance, and directed by Penny Marshall, was based on the 1947 classic, The Bishop’s Wife. The gospel-soaked Arista soundtrack, Whitney’s lifelong dream, became the biggest-selling gospel album in Billboard chart history, three-times platinum in the U.S. alone. Whitney added the medium of made-fortelevision movies to her list of accomplishments when The Wonderful World of Disney aired the musical Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella in November 1997. The special starred Whitney as the Fairy Godmother, Brandy as Cinderella, Bernadette Peters as the wicked stepmother, Whoopi Goldberg as the queen, and an all-star multi-cultural cast. The programme drew a U.S. audience of more than 60 million viewers, and gave the ABC network its highest Sunday night rating in over a decade. Whitney and her company, ‘BrownHouse Productions’, served as executive producers on the project, which garnered seven Emmy nominations including Outstanding Variety, Musical or Comedy. The home video version shattered previous records to become the best-selling video ever of a made-for-television movie. The next year, fans ecstatically received Whitney’s first non-soundtrack related studio album in eight years, My Love Is Your Love, produced with Clive Davis. Whitney proved her ability to stay contemporary with the first single ‘Heartbreak Hotel’ featuring Faith Evans and Kelly Price. It was the beginning of a string of gold and platinum chart hit singles from the album spanning nearly a year and a half. The success of ‘My Love Is Your Love’ kicked off a phenomenal year for Whitney, gold, platinum and multi-platinum album sales were certified in every corner of the globe.

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT

In late June, as ‘It’s Not Right But It’s Okay’ became the 17th top five pop hit of her career, Whitney commenced a successful world tour playing 16 cities in North America. At the 42nd annual Grammy Awards in February 2000, 15 months after the album release, Whitney received her sixth career Grammy, as ‘It’s Not Right But It’s Okay’ was voted Best Female R&B Vocal. Winning her first R&B Grammy award in a category that included Mary J. Blige, Brandy, Faith Evans, and Macy Gray was extremely gratifying for Whitney Houston, especially after three previous Grammy awards for Best Female Pop Vocal. A month later in March 2000, Whitney was named Female Artist Of the Decade at the Soul Train Music Awards annual ceremonies virtually 15 years to the day since her debut single ‘You Give Good Love’ entered the Billboard Hot Black Singles chart on March 9, 1985. In the midst of her 15th anniversary year as an Arista recording artist, the double-album ‘Whitney The Greatest Hits’, celebrated the past, present and future. In addition to newly recorded tracks with Enrique Iglesias, Deborah Cox, George Michael, and Q-Tip, there were rare vintage tracks unavailable for a decade, impossible-tofind club mixes, and bonus tracks. In the aftermath of the World Trade Center disaster of September 11, 2001, Whitney’s soaring rendition of ‘The Star Spangled Banner’ was the first benefit single to be issued, coupled with her version of ‘America the Beautiful’.

In December 2002, Whitney released her fifth studio album, Just Whitney. The album included productions from then-husband Bobby Brown, as well as Missy Elliott and Babyface, and marked the first time that Houston did not produce with Clive Davis as he had been released by top management at BMG. Every artist’s first Christmas collection is a special career landmark, and Whitney’s One Wish - The Holiday Album, was no exception. True to her church upbringing, the Whitney Houston Foundation For Children Inc. was established in 1989 as a non-profit organization that cares for such problems as homelessness, children with cancer and AIDS, and other issues of self-empowerment. In June 1995, the Foundation was awarded a VH1 Honour for its charitable work. Whitney’s tireless efforts earned recognition from such organizations as St. Jude Children’s Hospital, the United Negro College Fund, and the Children’s Diabetes Foundation, all of whom have benefited from the heart and soul of a great artist and humanitarian. Singing to audiences on every continent, Whitney won her worldwide following the old-fashioned way, digging deep down into her soul and finding common threads with her millions of fans. After years of controversy and turmoil, Houston separated from Bobby Brown in September 2006, filing for divorce the following month. On February 1, 2007, Houston asked the court to fast track their divorce which was finalised on April 24, 2007, with Houston granted custody of

Houston’s remake of Sparkle was filmed in the fall of 2011, and is set for release by TriStar Pictures in August 2012. On February 9, 2012, Houston visited singers Brandy and Monica, together with Clive Davis, at their rehearsals for Davis’ preGrammy Awards party. That same day, she made her last public performance, when she joined Kelly Price on stage at the party and sang ‘Jesus Loves Me’. On February 11, Houston was found dead in a suite at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, in Beverly Hills, California, submerged in the bathtub. As Society Marbella went to print, the cause of death was not yet known. Paramedics arrived at approximately 15.30 and found the singer unresponsive and performed CPR. Houston was pronounced dead at 16.00. Local police said there were “no obvious signs of criminal intent.”

the couple’s daughter. In March 2007, Clive Davis of Arista Records announced that Houston would begin recording a new album. Houston gave her first interview in seven years in September 2009, appearing on Oprah Winfrey’s season premiere. The interview was billed as “the most anticipated music interview of the decade”. Whitney admitted on the show to using drugs with former husband Bobby Brown, who “laced marijuana with cocaine”. Houston released her new album, I Look to You, in August 2009. The album entered the Billboard 200 at number one, with Houston’s best opening-week sales of 305,000 copies, marking Houston’s first number one album since The Bodyguard, and Houston’s first studio album to reach number one since 1987’s Whitney. Houston then embarked on a world tour, entitled the ‘Nothing but Love World Tour’. It was her first world tour in over ten years and was announced as a triumphant comeback. In September 2011, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Houston would produce and star alongside Jordin Sparks and Mike Epps in the remake of the 1976 film Sparkle. R&B singer Aaliyah, originally tapped to star as Sparkle, died in a 2001 plane crash. Her death derailed production, which would have begun in 2002.

12

Houston had an invitation-only memorial on Saturday, February 18, at the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey. The service was scheduled for two hours, but lasted for four. Stevie Wonder, BeBe Winans and CeCe Winans, Alicia Keys and R. Kelly were among those who performed at the funeral, interspersed with hymns by the church choir and remarks by Clive Davis, Houston’s record producer; Kevin Costner; Ricky Minor her music director; her cousin Dionne Warwick and Ray Watson, her security guard for the past 11 years. Aretha Franklin was listed on the programme and was expected to sing, but was unable to attend the service due to illness. Bobby Brown, Houston’s ex-husband, was also invited to the funeral but he left before the service began. Houston was buried Sunday, February 19, 2012, in Fairview Cemetery, in Westfield, New Jersey next to her father, John Russell Houston, who died in 2003. The Clive Davis’ pre-Grammy party that Houston was expected to attend, and that featured many of the biggest names in music and movies, went on as scheduled, although it was quickly turned into a tribute to Houston. Davis spoke about Houston’s death at the evening’s start, “By now you have all learned of the unspeakably tragic news of our beloved Whitney’s passing. I don’t have to mask my emotion in front of a room full of so many dear friends. I am personally devastated by the loss of someone who has meant so much to me for so many years. Whitney was so full of life. She was so looking forward to tonight even though she wasn’t scheduled to perform. Whitney was a beautiful person and a talent beyond compare. She graced this stage with her regal presence and gave so many memorable performances here over the years. Simply put, Whitney would have wanted the music to go on and her family ask that we carry on.”

Her directorial debut ‘In the Land of Blood and Honey’ received such roaring praise, that Angelina Jolie is planning on creating a film about the conflict in Afghanistan. In an interview at the Berlin International Film Festival, the Mr. and Mrs. Smith actress told press, “I did write something on Afghanistan. Nobody’s seen it yet.” It appears the exciting prospect has been kept hidden away, not even Jolie’s longtime partner Brad Pitt has been honoured with the privilege of a quick peak. Jolie noted, “Brad hasn’t seen it. It’s hidden. So I don’t know how very good it is, but it’s been a pleasure to write.”

16

Each month SOCIETY MARBELLA shares a secret with you. It may be the freshest music artist, an exciting new designer or the next A list actress, but whoever it is, you know they are one to watch. This month, Society Marbella has its eyes on actor Liam Hemsworth. and Craig, and two brothers. Hemsworth decided to try his hand at acting when he was in high school and hired an agent. He had his first successful audition when he was 16-years-old, in an episode of the television show ‘Home & Away’, followed by another guest role on ‘McLeod’s Daughters’. In 2007, Hemsworth started filming episodes for the popular Australian soap opera ‘Neighbours’, playing athletic paraplegic Josh Taylor, opposite his brother Luke, who’d been playing Nathan Tyson on the show since 2000. In 2008, Liam tried a less intense role as Marcus, lead guitarist of the Elephant Princess band in the children’s television show ‘The Elephant Princess’, also with Luke, who played Uncle Harry. Liam later had roles in the television series ‘Satisfaction’ and starred in the British film ‘Triangle’. He also made a brief appearance as an MIT student in the film ‘Knowing’ alongside Nicholas

Cage. However, Hemsworth’s journey to Hollywood wasn’t smooth sailing. In 2009, he was supposed to play the role of Sylvester Stallone’s son in the movie ‘The Expendables’ but was later cut from the script. Not long after, Hemsworth received a call from director Kenneth Branagh to audition for the lead role in Marvel Studios’ ‘Thor’, but the role went to his brother Chris. Liam moved to Los Angeles and finally achieved his first starring role in a major motion picture in Walt Disney’s adaption of Nicholas Sparks’ ‘The Last Song’. Hemsworth played the love interest of Miley Cyrus’ character in the film. During filming of the Disney film, rumours began to circulate that the two young stars were dating. This rumour was fueled when Hemsworth appeared in the music video for Cyrus’ ‘When I Look at You’. In March 2010, Details magazine selected Hemsworth as one of

their predictions for ‘The Next Generation of Hollywood’s Leading Men’, later that month, it was announced that Hemsworth was to star in ‘Arabian Nights’, a 3D action film that will be directed by Chuck Russell for Inferno Entertainment. August 2010 saw Hemsworth confirm the role of Isaac Gildea in the movie ‘The Throwback’, a sports drama with Dennis Quaid. This was followed by one of the leads in ‘The Hunger Games’ film adaptation, (see this month’s TOP TEN for more information on the film). Although his climb to the top may have been filled with close calls, rejection and sibling rivalry, it appears Liam is now on track to grab that Hollywood Leading Man status especially with the announcement that he was joining the cast of ‘The Expendables 2’ with Hollywood icons Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis.

Marston Hefner, the 21-year-old son of Playboy’s Hugh Hefner, was arrested in a Los Angeles last month for allegedly assaulting Playmate Claire Sinclair. Authorities confirmed that cops were called to the couple’s Pasadena home after receiving a domestic-violence call. Sinclair suffered minor injuries and Hefner was taken into custody without incident. Marston was charged with battery on a spouse and released a few hours later after posting a $20,000 bail. Hefner and Sinclair were not married but under state law a ‘spouse’ can be considered a cohabitant. Sinclair since took to Twitter to thank her supporters. “There’s two types of pain in the world - pain that hurts you, and pain that makes you stronger. All of your positivity is giving me strength.”

Mike Comrie, who is soon to be a proud father, has announced his retirement from professional hockey. Ex- Disney queen Hilary Duff’s

Hilary tweeted, “As many of you know Mike has announced his retirement. It’s a bittersweet day! He had a wonderful career! But three hip surgeries in five years is a lot!”

The Scene will no longer be seen or heard, at least not with Selena Gomez. The talented star has called it quits with her band, with whom she’s released three albums and recently wrapped up a Latin American tour. The Disney star says she wants to focus on her budding film career, and that everyone is on great terms. “My band and I are going our separate ways for a while. This year is all about films and acting and I want my band to play music wherever with whoever. We will be back but it will be a good while. I love them and I love you guys”, Gomez announced on her Facebook page.

29-year-old One Tree Hill actress Sophia Bush has split from her long-time boyfriend and co-star Austin Nichols. She had been dating the 31-year-old on and off for six years. The actress has a history of romancing her co-stars. She was first married to former series star Chad Michael Murray before they divorced in December 2006.

She’s the latest celebrity to be targeted by a crazed stalker, and Blake Lively has obtained a restraining order to protect her from a loony fan. The ‘Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants’ starlet has been the object of obsession for Sergei Mifle, who has made multiple visits to the set of Blake’s hit show ‘Gossip Girl.’ Additionally, Mifle has contacted Blake’s mother to insist that he and Lively have a “metaphysical” connection. Although Sergei claims he’s “deeply concerned” about helping Blake, a judge has ruled that he may not contact or come near Lively or her mum.

I must admit it is very difficult at times as I have a young child to look after, but the love for what I do gives me the determination to make it work. I also want to make Lilly proud of her mother, so that motivates me day by day.

Do you ever find it hard being a mother?

Describe a typical day in your life.

I’m up at 6am, make breakfast for everyone, walk my dogs, take my daughter to school and drive 30 minutes down the coast to work in Anthony’s Diamonds. Then I travel back up the coast to pick her up from school! The secret is if you enjoy your work, it all becomes easy.

What is your favourite part of being a parent? I have to say that my best thing about being a mother is the power from a little girl’s kiss. Lilly fills me with the joys of spring and is always ready to laugh with me.

There are always better times than others, always ups and downs when juggling my work and having a child, but I love being a mother, I wouldn’t change it for the world. Also, my husband Peter gives me such great support, which makes all the difference as I know that I always have a helping hand when I need it. My father, Anthony Barnes, owner of Anthony’s Diamonds, plays a huge part in my life, as he completely dotes on his grandchildren.

How do you find the time to relax and what do you like doing in your spare time?

In my spare time, I like to visit the gym and take long walks on the beach with my family and our dogs. I also like to pamper myself, (what woman doesn’t!) so often indulge in treatments from my good friend Jemma from The Gallery At Home; she can make a person feel a million dollars.

Anthony’s Diam ith her husband Puerto Banus w hter Lilly, and Peter, her daug ookie and C gs their two do CoCo.

How does your daughter inspire you?

Watching my daughter grow into the person she is, well that’s simply amazing. She loves jewellery and is very interested in diamonds, so I try to teach her in the hope that she will grow up to be a jeweller just like her mum. It really is a fantastic business to work in, with every day being different and getting to work with beautiful pieces.

Are there any mother figures you aspire to?

Not particularly, I’m my own person and just do what’s best for my daughter and family, although I fully respect all working mothers, as it’s one of the hardest things to do, but the rewards outweigh the cons.

What is your opinion on stay-at-home mothers?

I don’t really have a particular opinion, as each person has their own world they live in. I enjoy my work and could never sit at home all day! Mind you, I do love my Sundays ha ha.

What memory do you cherish most?

The memory I cherish most is watching my daughter at my desk looking at diamonds and feeling so proud of her.

How will you be spending Mother’s Day?

Relaxing I hope, breakfast in bed maybe?

Describe a typical day in your life.

I make sure I am awake before the children in order to get dressed and ready, then wake them up, prepare their packed lunch, and after a quick breakfast we all rush to the car for school, emphasis on rush. Once the kids are at Aloha College, depending on my cake orders, I go to the restaurant, or back to my workshop. If I do have a lot of cake orders, I usually go to the restaurant around 1pm and stay there until it’s time to pick up the children from school. That’s when my third jobs starts; the mother job, which is the hardest in my opinion, all the rest is a joke, believe me! I supervise the children’s homework, bath time and prepare dinner. Dinnertime is my favourite time of the day, where we can all relax and discuss our day. After the children are in bed, I try and finally relax for one hour, and then it’s bedtime for me too.

doesn’t always have as much time as she would sometimes like for him. I am very proud of my children, and when they tell me they are proud of me…well that’s just priceless! They actually influenced me in setting up Cake Couture Marbella; I baked so many birthday cakes for them, one day I decided to transform it into my vocation.

What is it you love most about being a mother?

Everything! I have children of all ages: an adolescent, teenager and young child. This was deliberate, I always wanted to have children, and waited purposely to have my last child, because I didn’t

How do you manage to juggle being a mother and a businesswoman?

It’s not always easy, but I am lucky enough to have one of my two businesses based at home; my baking kitchen for Cake Couture Marbella was fitted into my former garage, so this allows me to work and be at home with my children. As I said before, I usually try to be at La Parisienne when they are in school. I also have to admit that I have a fantastic husband who doesn’t hesitate to lend a helping hand, whether it’s picking the children from school when I’m too busy or preparing dinner if I’m really tired after a stressful day.

Do you ever find time to relax?

Honestly…no, but I am a workaholic and the rare times when I have nothing to do, I easily get bored, I always have to be busy! When I do find some free time in my day, I dedicate it to my children.

How do your children inspire you?

I am very lucky to have three children that are beautiful, inside and out. My two girls, aged 17 and almost 13, are old enough to not need their mummy as much any longer, so they help me a lot with the little one. He’s four years old, and he also understands that mum

want to find myself with grown up children ready to leave the house. I love the smell of my little one’s head, as much as I love my eldest’s stories, but above all, when they tell me “I love you”, I just melt.

Are there any mother figures you aspire to?

Not particularly, I think each mother does her best with her individual situation, and each child is different, leading you to act in a different manner.

Was it a hard decision relocating your whole family to Marbella?

It was quite difficult because our main concern was the schools, and the fact that we wanted the children to agree. We never would have moved to Marbella if they weren’t comfortable with the situation. Luckily, they loved Aloha College when we visited it, and they already knew the lifestyle since we had

spent all our previous holidays here. We had no doubt that their quality of life would tremendously improve, which it did. I could never imagine them living in a cold country and not being able to go outdoors as much as they can here.

How will you be spending Mother’s Day?

Just like every year, I will purposely wake up late, to allow the children to surprise me with a breakfast they will have made especially for me. Along with the help of my husband, they always prepare a beautiful tray, adorned with fresh flowers. My second daughter will, I hope, once again write me a marvellous piece of poetry, my eldest daughter will give me a gift she remembered to purchase the night before, and my little one will draw me a nice portrait. That’s the only day I get to do nothing, and it’s absolute bliss!

Zoe Woods, owner of

Wood Hairdressing lives in San Pedro with her son Ad dison aged 14. She has two horses, Oregan and Rub y.

Describe a typical day in your life?

No two days are the same. However, during the week it is a 7am start. I make Addison breakfast in bed, this is his one treat as I do not have time to cook throughout the rest of the day. After Addison has got the bus to school, I make my way to the salon for 8am, where I can work for up to 12 hours. I love my job. I have created a boutique style salon, where clients can feel totally relaxed in a luxurious environment; this makes it a pleasure to work in. Each client is unique

and has different needs, which keeps me on my toes. As I cover all areas of hairdressing, colour, cutting, styling, hair extensions and creating up dos, I could never get bored. I never have time for lunch, when I start to feel hungry or get the shakes and realise I haven’t eaten I grab a quick bite of a sandwich in the staff room, in between clients. Most people can’t understand how I do this, but it is something that I have gotten used to. After work I pick up Addison and we go straight to the stables where we usually spend around three hours. Much of our social life revolves round the stables, and stopping for a quick drink helps me unwind. We then either dine out or eat something that I bought earlier. We get home about 9.30pm, I make sure Addison has done his homework, which he always has and then once he has gone to bed I catch up on emails and calls.

How does your son inspire you?

Do you ever find time to relax?

What memory do you cherish most?

The horses are my relaxation. I love being with them, grooming them and of course riding them. I am very lucky that Addison and I share the same hobby, as it means we get to spend more time together. At weekends Addison competes in show jumping competitions. Sundays are our family day and this is very important to me. We are either up at the crack of dawn as Addison has a competition or we will spend the morning together at the stables and then enjoy a long lunch with family and friends.

I admire my son’s dedication in life. He spends hours riding the horses and will still come back and do his homework. We have never pushed him into riding, he was just always at the stables and when he started riding, he was really good at it. He works hard, some people say that he has my work ethic. I love the fact that he is coming into his own now and has grown into a polite, easy going and extremely funny young man.

Was it a hard decision relocating your whole family to Marbella?

It was extremely hard. I had to leave a lot behind in the UK. I gave up a very successful business, but it was a ‘now-ornever’ situation as Addison was the right age. He was only four and would easily be able to adapt to living in another country.

Turning up to Addison’s school play, and finding out he was the Angel, which was the lead role. He had not told us, so it was such a surprise; the only thing was I hadn’t brought a camera with me!

How will you be spending Mother’s Day?

At the stables of course, where we will have breakfast then see to the horses. Afterwards, lunch at a local restaurant with all the people I love. As for a lie-in, what’s that?

Describe a typical day in your life.

A typical day is my life is very simple but very wonderful. I start my day by going into my lovely daughters rooms to say good morning and wake them up for school. My husband and I both share the importance of having at least two family sit-down meals a day, so we always start our day by having breakfast with the girls. After breakfast I drive them to school, I love the school drive as we get to talk about lots of different things and have a giggle. The rest of my morning is usually taken up by grocery shopping and running errands for home or for Daisy Boutique. I try to go into Daisy every day to see Nicole and Joanne. They are the two lovely girls who manage Daisy so wonderfully. At 4pm, I pick up the girls from school, which is always a lovely part of my day as I get excited to hear about how their day went. The remainder of the day is a combination of cooking and getting dinner ready. Most of my emails and phone calls regarding the shop are usually completed by this time as most of Daisy’s brands are from the US so we have to work around the time difference. We then end the day as we began, with a family meal.

How do you manage to juggle being a mother and a businesswoman? I manage being a mum and a businesswomen quite simply because I have two amazing girls working in Daisy. Nicole and Joanne care for Daisy as I do. They are always thinking of ways we can improve, and are constantly researching new brands.

22

On the rare occasion you find some spare time, how do you like to spend it?

I love to spend my spare time with my family, friends and their kids; whether it’s out for dinner or lunch on the beach.

How do your girls inspire you?

My girls inspire me in so many ways. I want to guide them to follow their dreams and show them that they have nothing to lose by trying.

What is the best aspect of being a mother?

The best aspect about being a mother is just simply being a mother. My daughters are my whole life. I love all the blessings that come with being a mum. One thing my mum told me was that every age has its charm and she was so right! My girls

I aspire to be as good a mum to my girls as my mother was, and still is, to me. My parents live five minutes away from us and I talk to them every day. I love my mother so much and I hope my kids feel the same way about me.

Is there anything you would have done differently as a mum?

I don’t think there is anything I would have done differently. Someone once told me, “as long as you love your kids and let them know how much you love them every day and how special they are, that’s what they need.” This is what I live by and ensure I do every day.

How will you be spending Mother’s Day?

I think I will be spending Mother’s Day at a restaurant with my family. Hopefully I will receive some homemade cards too!

AND THEN THERE WERE THREE… HELEN POWELL Tell us a little bit about yourself... My name is Helen, I am 46-years-old and I live with my partner here on the Costa del Sol. I have one son and two stepchildren, all of whom are now living away from our family home. Until more recently I saw myself as an outgoing, confident person, now I look in the mirror and just don’t recognise myself. I think that this is partly related to the strain of nursing my son through two consecutive bouts of cancer over the last couple of years, I just can’t seem to regain my former sparkle! Have you considered plastic surgery before? I had a breast enlargement 12 years ago, however this was primarily a reconstructive procedure as a result of an operation that saved my life when I was 14 hours old, part of my right breast muscle was cut away so they could get to my windpipe and oesophagus. Other than this and a small eye surgery, I have never considered any other major procedures until now. What is your biggest insecurity? I would say that the thing that I am most insecure about is looking old, re-

sulting in making me unable to feel sexy or womanly. Do you feel this has affected your confidence? Yes, I look at pictures of me when the kids were young and then look in the mirror and I feel like I am just looking at an old woman and not a person that is ageing beautifully.

Helen

How would being selected change your life? I feel that this process would not only give me the looks that I want to regain, but that it would also give me the confidence back that I have lost in recent years. It’s not just me that would benefit, but my family too. I am certain that I would find a whole new lease of life! Why do you believe you should be chosen? You know I don’t really have a clue! I’m a good person and I’ve had my share of injustice in recent years. It would just be great for something nice to happen to me and to find a way back to regaining that sparkle and zest from my former years that both me and my family miss so much.

KAREN VILLAVERDE Tell us a little bit about yourself... I was born in a small town in Northern Ireland, and relocated to Dublin with my family when I was 16. I was a fairly sporty child, competing in many prestigious show jumping competitions. At the age of 18, I was involved in a kidnapping, which greatly affected me. Having a gun pointed at my head had a huge impact on my life, and after my father paid the ransom the kidnappers demanded, we felt we needed a holiday, so came to Marbella, instantly falling in love with the place. After frequently holidaying here, I decided to move here and met my husband at Victors Beach, who I have since separated from, with whom I have two children.

notices, and feel it would make a huge difference to my appearance if it was improved. Also, I would like a little liposuction to slim down my figure. Do you feel this has affected your confidence? Hugely, I feel over the years I have slowly been losing my personality bit by bit, as everything seems to be changing, and not for the better. How would being selected change your life? I feel it would certainly boost my confidence to where it once was. I used to pride myself on being a very outgoing, bubbly person, but as the years have past, my spark seems to have been fading. Why do you believe you should be chosen? I want to regain my confidence as a woman. Living here in Marbella, everywhere you look there are seemingly perfect women, so through Marbella Makeover, I believe my outlook on life would be changed forever.

I would say my face and neck are my biggest insecurities, for me it is what everyone

MARION HUGHES Tell us a little bit about yourself... I have lived here seven years now and pride myself on working hard as a retired midwife and mother, giving care and support to a lot of new mums on the coast. My daughter is a beautiful singer who keeps me busy, and all the running around makes me feel I don’t always look my best. Have you considered plastic surgery before? I have always said it is not something I would be ashamed of, but finances have never allowed me to consider any form of surgery.

Marion

What is your biggest insecurity? It would have to be my neck and my ageing face that gives me the most unhappiness regarding my appearance.

Do you feel this has affected your confidence? Yes, I am constantly comparing myself to others of a similar age, so I am very conscious of looks. People often think I am my daughter’s grandmother!! How would being selected change your life? It would definitely regain my confidence and self esteem. I would be more comfortable in my outlook on life and not feel so old. Why do you believe you should be chosen? I have always been a hardworking and caring person, always busy with everyone else’s life and I think maybe its time to take a bit of time out for myself!

So there you have it. The final three candidates. Only one of them will have their lives revolutionized through this access-all-areas project.

“I have always had a problem with PMS, irregular cycles and painful periods but thinking this was ‘normal’ I pretty much ignored it until I was diagnosed with severe endometriosis and polycystic ovaries and told that it would be difficult, if not impossible, for me to conceive. While not in a hurry to start a family this was quite distressing news.”

THE TREATMENT

“Carole took a full and detailed history from me in order to do a diagnosis. Throughout the process she was so calm and gentle that I gradually relaxed as I was a worried about the ‘needle’ part. Afterwards I was so tired! When I spoke to her, Carole reassured me that it is quite normal as your body relaxes and ‘processes’ the work she had done. Carole recommended a fairly intense course to begin with, one session per week for a few weeks. The gap was then extended as I started to feel better to once a month, arranged around my cycle. Now it’s only when I think I ‘need’ her. She also talked me through my diet and explained things that I could do to help, such as reducing my sugar intake and increasing my protein consumption, (mainly from wholegrains), which had a radical effect on my mood.”

THE BENEFITS

“According to my last gynaecological check-up, I no longer have endometriosis and while there is still the evidence of PCOS, the cysts are now so small they are almost insignificant - a clean bill of health. So clean in fact that I’m now four months pregnant.” Carole Dumenil, Acupuncturist Tel. 952 883 151 / 693 939 188 5element-acupuncture.com

THE PERFECT DERRIERE The latest news on how you can achieve that toned and youthful look

I

n this age of celebrity, we are often confronted with images of people who have really maintained their looks, despite the advancing years. So now, being 40-years-old or more is hardly considered middle age; instead it’s still a time to celebrate a youthful look. Take for example Kylie Minogue; she looks stunning at 43-years-old and still boasts that perfect derriere that she showed off in those infamous gold hot pants back in 2000. What’s more, the sensation that Pippa Middleton caused at last year’s Royal Wedding shows it’s no secret that many of us want that pert bottom, for a sexy, toned look. Well, now thanks to the latest cosmetic surgery techniques, Dr. Marco Vricella is able to offer buttock augmentation here in Spain. Established in Brazil, this proven procedure enables you to have a fuller, shapelier posterior! “Buttock implant is a fairly recent procedure here in Europe”, commented Dr. Marco Vricella. “It’s a well established, proven cosmetic procedure in Latin America and is something I’m pioneering here in Spain with great success”.

34

Typically, Europeans have less volume and a buttock augmentation is a straightforward way to address this. Dr. Vricella uses a cohesive silicone gel implant; to the same exceptionally high standards to those Aria Medical Group use in breast surgery, but a buttock implant has a higher cohesivity, making it firmer.

+ + + + + + + + +

The implant adds shape and volume and also gives a lifting effect that all combine to give you a desirable result. The surgery leaves no visible scaring as the incision is made in the inter-gluteal fold.

Dr. Vricella holds free consultations in Madrid, Marbella and Gibraltar. To book an appointment please call 952 895 088 or email info@ariamedicalgroup.com

The buttock augmentation procedure includes an overnight stay in the luxury HCI Hospital in Marbella and recovery is swift, and most people can restart their active lifestyle within seven to ten days. Giles Brown contemplates madness in Marbella, whilst hanging upside down from the beams of his lakeside lair, dressed in a giant bat costume. (As you do?)

‘M

ad as a March hare’ the saying goes, but how does one actually define madness? More importantly, how does one define madness in Marbella? Before any Nutty Boys in two-tone shoes and pork pie hats start shouting from the cheap seats “I can. I saw them at the Plaza de Toros a few years back”; I worked on that Madness concert as a production assistant and still have the scars to prove it. Mainly on the surface of my liver, but then again I spent most of the time hanging out with the lighting guys. It was the only concert where they almost ran out of booze, and that was before we let the crowd in. It says something about the welcoming nature of Marbella that the town attracts more than its fair share of ‘colourful’ residents. For decades the marvellously monocled and mustachioed Don Jamie de Mora y Aragon held court in the town, always sharply dressed with a walking stick as befits a man who was a close friend of the great surrealist Salvador Dali. Formula One World Champion James Hunt lived in Marbella during the 70s and, when he wasn’t bedding anything in hot pants between here and Huelva, trained his beloved Alsatian Oscar to recover lost golf balls when he played at Aloha. The golf club went as far as granting Oscar honourary membership, on the grounds that he was usually better behaved than the other members, especially after happy hour, and Oscar even had a nightclub named after him. The other nightclub legend, Olivia Valere, also showed that perhaps the decades of discos had unloosened a few screws when she once declared that visiting Marbella without coming to her club was akin to going to Rome and not visiting the Vatican. Although she and Benedict do seem to share the same taste in flashing flowing numbers when they are at work. Olivia also commented on TV that she didn’t let poor people in her club incase it was contagious. Needless to say, I haven’t been let in for years... Marbella likes to call itself a forward looking ‘City of Tourism’, attracting international companies and brands, (although an Ap-

44

ple store, Marks and Sparks and the Hard Rock Cafe don’t really count in my book), as well as important cultural delegations. Only Marbella which, whisper it quietly, may have somewhat of an underlying crime problem, what with the Italian, Moroccan, Irish, Dutch, Estonian, Colombian, Ecuadorian, Bulgarian, Russian and British gang scene merrily taking pot shots at each other across Nueva Andalucia, (and that’s just on the Aloha College school run in the morning), would send an official delegation to twin the town with Georgia. The only organised crime group that we DON’T have! Yet. Over the years the Town Hall has come up with some wonderfully barking ideas. Jesus Gill did an outstanding job of cleaning up the town, getting crime off the streets, putting his mates in power and draining the Ayuntamiento of its bank accounts, but after his death, a foolproof if somewhat extreme method of avoiding corruption charges, the lunatics that had been running the asylum really came out of the woodwork. There were stories of plans for a huge manmade island to anchor off Puerto Banus, explanations that bags of money discovered buried in the grounds of one official’s house was a ‘family wedding tradition’, and another’s all-paid-for honeymoon to the exotic city of Moscow -that well known honeymooners destination along with the Maldives. When the press got a look inside the soon-to-be disgraced Roca’s huge Finca outside Marbella, they discovered a macabre menagerie of big game that he had personally shot. Alongside the usual lions, tigers and other unfortunates was a giraffe, thus confirming his madness, as we all know how dangerous an enraged giraffe can be.... My own experience of this particular madness came during the first Moscow- Marbella Friendship week, when the then Tourism Councilor declared “When you think of our Moscow and Marbella you think of only one thing”. “What thing? Organised crime, blinged-up billionaires, insane vodka consumption per capita?” I wondered.

“The warmth of our two great cities” he beamed to the sozzled Press Corp, most of who had been at the free Russian vodka since before breakfast. At the later dinner, we were all given half a bottle of vodka EACH at the table! I was seated by an ex Soviet Air Force officer who had been stationed in Kabul. He spoke no English, and I no Russian, but after several hundred refills, we were all drooling the same language... There are still traces of madness in the Town Hall today. This is the ‘City of Tourism’ that has made action hero and sci-fi baddie Dolph Lundgren its international ambassador. He’s a great guy, by the way. If you’re reading this Dolph, I’m a big fan, who now plans to build a massive €600 gazillion port in Marbella to attract the Cruise Industry, so we can look forward to Italian ships crashing into the town on a fairly regular basis, although we don’t have a decent hospital or infrastructure, but at least the captains can direct rescue operations from one of the many five star hotels. I could go on about other the mad schemes, such as making Marbella the hub of the film industry, the new Silicon Valley or Euro Disney, plans for a Puerto Banus Grand Prix and to get Marbella FC into La Liga (and if you’ve ever watched the town’s team ‘play’ and sat on the concrete slabs that make up the seating, you can imagine Messi or Ronaldo’s reaction if they ever had to walk out on Marbella’s hallowed turf), but the comment that best sums up the madness of the town came when the owner of a nearby safari park was asked what would happen if one of the wild animals escaped.

“If a wild creature escapes from the safari park and makes it to Marbella,” said the

former jungle expedition leader, fixing the Press Conference with a steely glare,

“it’ll have to take its chances in the town like the rest of us!”

Barcelona

he most cosmopolitan of all Spanish cities, Barcelona is nestled on the northern coast of the Iberian Peninsula, facing the Mediterranean Sea. A labyrinth of medieval backstreets mixed with wide, tree-lined avenues embellished with stylish shops; palm trees adorn quiet squares and the spires and cranes of Gaudí’s dizzying Temple, La Sagrada Familia, fill the skyline. Gaudí’s enchanted buildings stand out for their pure audacity. Theatrical, exciting and yet wonderfully functional, they are the stars of the Modernist (Catalan Art Nouveau) movement. If you only have the opportunity to visit one of these masterpieces, make it Casa Batlló, but if time is on your side, simply stroll down Passeig de Gracia in the direction of the port, where you can also enjoy the architectural gems Casa Mila (La Pedrera), Casa Amatller designed by Josep Puig i Cadafalch and Lluis Domenech i Montaner’s Casa Lleò Morera. Barcelona is an art lover’s haven, among the collection of museums in the hilltop Parc de Montjuïc, the baroque Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC) houses the world’s most important collection of Romanesque art, and Fundació Joan Miró has over 300 of the Catalan master’s works. For a modern alternative, The Museu Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA) buried between an array of narrow medieval streets comes as a vibrant surprise. The city also boats its fair share of live music venues, such as Razzmatazz and Bikini as well as a handful of marvellous concert halls; the Gran Teatre del Liceu, deco-

rated by gold leaf, plush red carpets and ornate carvings and L’Auditori, a sleek 2,400-seater venue that covers not only classical but also jazz and world music, are two of the finest. Although it has negative connotations of being overly touristic, a walk down what is essentially the quintessence of Barcelona, La Rambla is a must. Stalls, shops, street performers, bars and restaurants embellish this renowned boulevard, mak-

ing it the ideal opportunity to enjoy a traditional stroll. The flower and bird stalls are a particular highlight and provide a good opportunity for photography enthusiasts. You may pay a small fortune to sip a coffee at one of the roadside cafés but the people-watching opportunities will be worth the price. Whilst Catalonia’s most famous eatery is no doubt the Michelin starred El Bulli, the city of Barcelona’s itself possesses an abundance of excellent gourmet destinations. If you’re looking for an impeccable view to accompany your meal, then look no further than El Xalet, located on the mountain of Montjüic, adjacent to the Olympic Diving boards, the food

is faultlessly presented and if you have a sweet tooth you will not be disappointed. The desserts are custom made, so you are requested to order them prior to your starter; the anticipation built up throughout your meal is almost as exciting as the dessert itself! The Michelin-starred Comerç 24 located in the Borne area of Barcelona, is another requirement. Chef Carles Abellan blends tastes and flavours from around the world; America, Asia, Andalucia, Italy and of course Catalonia; the tapas tasting menu in particular has become almost as famous as the restaurant itself. The world famous, W Barcelona Hotel, plays host to two of the city’s finest dining establishments, tapping into binary cuisine styles. Wave’s culinary inspirations emulate Spanish and Mediterranean tapas, antipasti, tastes of Arabic or Lebanese specialties. The menu has an emphasis on light, healthy Mediterranean delights with a seafood focus. An eclectic mix of the world’s favourite dishes, from Mediterranean infused burgers, organic steaks and fresh pastas, whether you need a hearty dish to soak up the previous night’s alcohol or you wish to re-fuel prior to an afternoon of sightseeing, the Club Sandwich is a recommendation for all occasions. The W’s subsequent eatery takes gourmet dining to a new level. Bravo, managed by the Catalan Chef, Carles Abellan, of Comerç 24 fame, merges his culinary mastery, the dynamism of which the innovative W brand is globally recognised. The delectable menu unites fresh local produce

47

with a fusion of exciting and innovative creations brought to life by Abellan’s flair whilst still preserving the most essential raw flavours of the dishes in their purest sense. The food takes president and the quality is unparallelled. Each type of meat, fish or starter dish is cooked on a different kind of wood depending on the aroma that it best suits, a true culinary experience that cannot be missed. If you choose to sample Bravo’s impressive menu (which is highly recommended,) make sure you take a trip to the 26th floor for a post dinner cocktail at the most anticipated new addition to Barcelona’s vibrant nightlife scene, W’s ultra-exclusive Eclipse bar where the freshest cocktails are complemented by world-class DJs spinning soulful sounds, delicious beats and live performances, inspired by its stunning Mediterranean setting and inherently London personality. Flirty with a touch of whimsy, Eclipse has established itself as the city’s ultimate entertainment lifestyle destination.

48

To get in with the cool Catalan crowd, try the upmarket venues Slow Barcelona and Sutton Club where the girls dress like film stars and the boys look like catalogue cutouts. Slightly more democratic are the likes of City Hall and Otto Zutz, two vast arenas of nocturnal mischief, and if you’re serious about your dance music then you might want to try Sala Becool.

With its own language, character and history, the city of Barcelona could keep you occupied for weeks but if you are only able to sojourn for a couple of days, make sure you drop into as many of the aforementioned as possible, you will be disappointed if you don’t!

ith such a vibrant city right on our doorstep, we thought it was about time we explored Barcelona for what it is; beautiful, inspiring and home to one of the most striking hotels in the world, W Barcelona. Some of the team from Icon Publishing were fortunate enough to indulge in the ultimate level of luxury. Escape from everyday life and enter a world of the unexpected and the extraordinary. Slip into the scene and sip something vibrant. Stay plugged in by day and play a new track by night. Feel the perks of an insider and flirt with all the senses. It’s a fantastical, magical state of mind, come vividly to life. Dream in dynamic design, think fashion-forward, look to what’s next and what’s new. You are invited to be a part of what is now and what is wow at W Barcelona. This is how the world defines, and redefines, contemporary, transformational luxury. W Hotels: The pulse of possibilities. W Barcelona is an architectural masterpiece. Rising like a sail from the Mediterranean sands of Barceloneta, it is as much a work of modern art as it is a luxury brand hotel. W Barcelona is the first W Hotel in Spain, taking the glamorous W brand’s style and sophistication to the exciting Mediterranean hub of the Iberian Peninsula. W Barcelona is located at the Passeig Joan de Borbó, directly at the entrance gate to the harbour and facing the Mediterranean Sea. The famous Barceloneta boardwalk directly

50

expires into the sun terraces and pool bars of the hotel. The ultimate sensory multiplex, with direct beach access and walking distance to the daytime favourites Barceloneta, Las Ramblas and the old town (Ciutat Vella) of Barcelona, as well as a short stroll to Barcelona nighttime pleasures at the El Born district, Port Vell, and Puerto Olimpico. Designed by world-renowned architect Ricardo Bofill, W Barcelona is a glittering, postmodern jewel crowning Barcelona’s golden coastline, providing a contemporary lifestyle experience with a complete service offer. Located beachfront along the famous Barceloneta

boardwalk, the hotel features 473 guest rooms, including 67 suites, two WOW suites and one Extreme WOW suite with 360º panoramic views. With the smallest room available encompassing 40sqm, ours, the appropriately named ‘Wonderful Room’, on the 19th floor offered a truly spectacular view of Barcelona’s offerings through its floor to ceiling windows; even of the nearby nudist beach, that’s something they don’t tell you in the brochure! The open plan space included two W signature beds with pillow-top mattresses and feather bed overlays, goose down bedding and 350-thread-count

cotton bend sheets, perfect for resting our heads after a heavy night out on Barcelona’s ceramic tiles, more on that later. An extended chaise longue that spanned the length of the windows was a cozy, pillow-strewn perch from which to soak up the panorama. The marble bathroom with separate rainfall shower and WC separated by frosted glass was the ultimate in modernity, with Bliss Spa bathroom amenities and plush W bathrobes dotted around. Also present were the standard in-room facilities, but many with a difference, a high-tech electronic safe, aptly named ‘Munchie Box and mini bar’ and high-speed wireless Internet access. The oversized leather desk housed a 32” flat screen TV with in-room movies on-demand, an alarm/clock/radio with iPod docking station and 2-line cordless phones with call conferencing features, speaker/caller ID, voice mail and a data port. There was even a W dream pillow menu, think of it as sweet dreams delivered right to your door; their attention to detail proves exactly why they are regarded as one of the best hotel chains in the world.

Along with the awe inspiring architecture and decoration, the hotel also features many spectacular public spaces with more than 2500sqm of ultramodern meeting and event space, including a unique 1000sqm large Great Room (W’s interpretation of a ballroom) with breathtaking, unobstructed sea views, and vast outside terraces, making W Barcelona more than the ultimate insider escape but also an ideal hotel for special events, meetings and celebrations. After being shown to our room by the accommodating concierge team, we took a tour of the hotel itself; exploring every nook and cranny of the dreamlike palace. Firstly we wanted to take a peak at the spa, (we are women after all!) Bliss Spa established itself in New York in 1996, combining a clever menu of super-effective services and a fun ‘no attitude’ atmosphere. Boasting 700sqm arranged over two floors, featuring a retail beauty boutique, two manicure and two pedicure nail stations, eight treatment rooms and men’s and women’s lounges for post-treatment relaxation, it is

51

the ultimate in pure indulgence. Bliss Barcelona also features a shared wet area, steam room, sauna and indoor Jacuzzi, along with SWEAT, the state-of-the-art fitness facility outfitted with Technogym equipment and panoramic views of the Mediterranean, complemented by resident DJ sets to inspire high energy work out sessions. A truly original experience, unique to the W. As we were wandering around the contemporary resort, we were approached by the Whatever/Wherever team. They are on hand 24 hours a day, at your complete beck and call. Searching for inspiration on exploring the city? Looking for a private chartered yacht excursion along the Mediterranean coastline?

Need a pair of jogging shoes at 5am? Whatever/Whenever is W Barcelona’s service promise, providing guests whatever they want, whenever they want it (as long as it’s legal)! Before heading into the city centre, we stopped for a drink at the W Bar, perfect to watch the action unfold. We savoured a celebratory cava to toast the weekend, whilst enjoying the sounds of the cool DJ mixes. After reminiscing over the specially designed retro board games, and gossiping over a second tipple, this time from their W signature cocktail list, we ventured to dinner. W Barcelona houses two restaurants; the signature BRAVO24 restaurant by

Michelin-star rated chef Carlos Abellán with unparallelled views of the Barcelona shoreline, merging the culinary mastery of this Barcelona native chef with the dynamism for which this innovative lifestyle brand is globally recognised. The second restaurant was the setting for our delectable dinner; Wave, the more relaxed but equally as stylish. Described as the ‘ideal spot to stop by and have a quick snack’, our amorous feast was anything but. A starter of crab and avocado wraps (plural!) followed by a perfectly cooked angus solomillo and porous risotto with pan-fried succulent scallops, washed down by a bottle of chardonnay and a few too many fruity cocktails put us in the mood for a few more drinks, and instead of retiring to bed, we decided to travel seven floors higher than our welcoming room, to the W’s ultra-exclusive rooftop bar; Eclipse. With its own private lift, we were faced with a roped off queue and a glamourous looking hostess with a daunting looking clipboard, but being hotel guests, we sheepishly skipped the queue by showing our room keys, and were chauffeured to the bar by a smartly dressed bouncer; we felt dead posh! Situated on the 26th floor, the ultimate glamour penthouse lounge and Barcelona’s newest nightlife icon envisioned by London’s Ignite Group, the creative minds behind Boujis, is where fashionistas mingle with fun-lovers, socialites mix with sunseekers, and vast vistas over the Mediterranean are complemented by the vibe of the scene. The vibe of the bar was likened more than that to a discothèque, so avoid like the plague if you are looking for a quiet nightcap. With strobe lighting, pulsating music and that all-important breathtaking view we’ve been banging on about throughout the entirety of this piece, we toasted to what had been a brilliant stay at the W, and the night was still young. Let just say, after lots of drinking and dancing, but the time we were asked to leave (the lights were on and the staff wanted to head home, oops!), our aching feet and pounding heads were delighted to have a rest. We awoke the next morning with seemingly fuzzed heads, (the measures are even more forgiving in Barcelona as they are here), and settled down to breakfast. After a good old fry up, we had to leave our private palace to retire back to reality. We were gutted that we hadn’t had time to explore WET, the glamorous infinity-edged pool surrounded by sun terraces and fully equipped cabanas, but we’re already planning what lounger we are going to accommodate and which treatment we’re going to indulge in on our next visit.

KEEP IT REAL

A study in style

Take one average looking apartment, add a Design by Penanc make-over, and what have you got? One of the most stylish and sophisticated homes in the harbour of Gibraltar.

I

magine this scenario: you’re relocating from Sotogrande to Gibraltar and you’ve found an apartment that meets all your criteria in terms of size, location and facilities, but there’s just one flaw, the interior is about as exciting as the inside of shoe box and the whole place needs a revamp. What do you do? If you are Lars Rydström, a Swedish businessman who has had a home on the Costa del Sol for years, the first thing you do is pick up the telephone to Peter Meirsman at Design by Penanc and invite him over to check out the new apartment. “As soon as I bought my new place in Ocean Village Harbour in Gibraltar I immediately got in touch with Peter to discuss the refurbishment project with him,” says Lars, who first worked with Peter in 2004, when he was doing some major refurbishment work on his house in Sotogrande. “I needed someone with his vision and capability to complete the whole project; that’s the great thing about Design by Penanc, they can do everything from major structural work, to painting and building bespoke furniture; it is a multi-faceted company that can take a project from A-Z including all the small details that other companies often neglect. Peter and his team always go the extra mile. They even handle all the paperwork that is involved in every job, which can be complicated. ”

BEFORE

56

The first step in transforming the threebedroom apartment was to open up key areas by removing some walls to give the interior more space, light and flow. Then Peter and his team got to work on building the unique features within the apartment that gave it the edge it was previously missing. “Peter built an amazing breakfast bar, which has become a focal point of the apartment, as the walls around it are finished with an eye-catching, exclusive marble powder spatula technique.” says Lars, who put complete faith in Peter’s ability to oversee the project while he was out of the country on business. “He also built me

AFTER

a great wardrobe with all the latest gadgets for storage. It is an amazing use of space; a normal wardrobe would have used twice the amount of space to store the same contents. This handmade design made the whole bedroom feel bigger.” Design by Penanc has a workshop in Coín, where Peter builds and sprays all its handmade furniture. This is where he made all the items for the ocean view apartment including an intricate wall piece that Lars commissioned from a picture he’d seen on a website. “When I saw this wall design online I immediately thought, ’I must have that!’

a black metallic wall in the children’s room that acts as a blackboard for them to draw on. And, of course, the painting, which is Peter’s speciality; he comes from five generations of decorative painters in Belgium who became famous in Europe for their innovative paint techniques. I showed it to Peter and he built it for me from scratch. It is a four piece wall unit with one hanging MDF lacquered unit with glass doors with integrated LED lighting; one black wall panel with a white shelf with integrated LED lighting; a three-door unit in white lacquered MDF and a floor unit, for equipment such as DVD or Play-

station, in white lacquered MDF with black glass doors.” With the structural and made-to-measure furniture complete, next came the finishing touches such as the contemporary PVC flooring, LED lighting, infrared heating on the terrace, electric interior blackout screens throughout and

AFTER

Lars already has first hand experience of Peter’s painting work from a project they worked on together in Sotogrande. “Nearly eight years ago, Peter did a special finish on one of the walls in my place in Sotogrande; he made it into a feature wall. To this day it looks as good as new,” he reports. “Although at the time, it may have seemed expensive, if I had paid half the price for someone else to do it, I would have had to repaint it two or three times by now, so it would have worked out more costly in the long run. It goes to show that you get what you pay for.” The result of Design by Penanc’s work at the apartment in Gibraltar, which took just two months to complete, is that people who have come to visit Lars have loved the work Peter’s done and asked for his contact details. One friend was so impressed with the finishing and loved the apartment so much he got in touch with Peter right away. This is the best type of advertising. The results speak for themselves. ometimes, when it comes to design, keeping things simple is the best way. So, if you don’t want to have to worry about what colours are in this season, and whether eau-de-nil is terribly 90s, ditch brights and pastels in favour of cool, clean black and white. To keep it current, stick to a moody, meaningful monochrome palette. Play with textures and patterns in your finishing and upholstery to add character; leather can add a chic edge to a simple backdrop.

Monthy Legal Advice

Rental Evictions:

Prior Requirements By Juan Luis Gámez - Lawyer

In the current economic crisis, the situation of leases (for both residential property and others) has varied considerably. A few years ago, it was really hard to find a rental property or commercial premises in which to run a business and now the issue has resulted in the lack of housing for rent and extreme changes to the eviction process. I mention this problem only on a legal level, as in theory there are no doubts on how the process should be established, nevertheless you have to take into account the various aspects that can take course according to art. 250.1.1 of the Spanish Civil Code (LEC) and that they can vary significantly. Today we will focus on the requirements to be done prior to filing your claim before the courts. The first requirement is a burofax sent with a certificate of content or a notarized letter to be sent via the notary’s office. The preparation, drafting and submission of this letter must be done properly; and I therefore strongly recommend that for this part you

take on a legal representative. (This is recommended without bias; we recommend that a lawyer draws up the rental contract as though there are many versions freely available online, they are known to be doubtful at best.) In the same way, we must take into account that this notification is established in art. 22.4.2º LEC, and even though the first paragraph of this article states that the process finalizes if the lessee proceeds to pay the outstanding amount, this is what we would call “destruction of action”. We must take into account that although sometimes this is not done, what the second paragraph of the said articles states is that paragraph 1 is not applicable when “the lessee has weakened the eviction in a previous process, except in the case where the payment is not cleared at the fault of the lessor, or when the lessor has requested payment to the lessee via official notification of at least 30 days or payment has not been received prior to the filing of the law suit. Meaning that it is very important to proceed with the prior

requirements in order to avoid the possibility of them being denied by a weakened action of payment. Following the drafting of the actual law suit, a matter that now belongs to the lawyer; they should also be dealing with the preparation and sending of the 30 day official notification prior to filing the law suit, as art. 439.3 LEC states that “eviction for lack of payment or claims for amounts owed will not be accepted if the lessor does not indicate the circumstances that may or may not allow the weakening of the eviction”. At this moment the lessee cannot proceed to pay and therefore interrupt the process in accordance with paragraph 2 of art. 22.4 LEC. Conclusion: The correct drafting of the initial rental contract, the drafting and sending of the prior requirements to the tenant and the content of the lawsuit are all issues of high importance from a legal point of view, and that as we have established from the beginning of this article, can make the process vary significantly if not done correctly, even causing negative results for the client (where the client is understood to be the owner of the property).

TORQUE TALK

Our in-depth motoring review

76

TORQUE TALK

Motoring author, racing driver and photo-journalist Ian Kuah reports on the LAMBORGHINI AVENTADOR he traffic in Southern California can be a motor T show parade all by itself, especially in wealthy towns like Newport Beach. But even here, the Lamborghini Aventador has the sheer presence to shade everything else. When I saw the matt black Aventador coming up the road towards our agreed meeting place, I swooned in a way that I have not done for any car for a very long time.

77

TORQUE TALK In traffic, the Aventador looks like an F-117 Stealth fighter picking its way through a sky full of anonymous passenger jets. Even in black, it grabs your attention and holds it. It is one thing to look at this car on a motor show stand, quite another to see it moving down the road, its big V12 motor growling away. In long standing Lamborghini tradition, the Aventador is named after a famous fighting bull, and of all the supercars launched recently, it is undoubtedly the one with the most visual wow factor. But then that is what Lamborghini has always been good at.

In addition, it’s 6,496cc litre, four-cam, 60-degree V12 motor simply could not be made clean enough to meet forthcoming emissions laws. This comes as no surprise since it is really a derivative of the original Bizzarrini-designed engine that started out at 3,929cc in the Miura. That said, several capacity stretches and an output increased from 375hp to 670hp over 47 years is an innings to be proud of in anyone’s books.

say LP700-4. In Lamborghini-speak, that means 700hp at 8,250rpm and four-wheel-drive.

The Aventador is built around a carbon-fibre monocoque whose passenger safety cell with tub and roof is one

miles from Los Angeles. Here, the less trafficked roads angling out into the desert roads will give me a fair chance to get a snapshot of the Aventador’s real world performance envelope.

At 1,575kg, the Aventador weighs 75kg less than the Murciélago, and so promises to be significantly faster too. Lamborghini claim 2.9 sec for the 0-100km/h sprint, with a 350km/h top speed. That is a good step up from the 3.2 sec and 347km/h of its predecessor.

In the beginning, Lamborghini was a conservative supercar manufacturer that debuted on the world stage in 1963 with the elegant but otherwise conventional front-engined, V12powered 350GT. Any last vestige of conservatism went out of the window when the mid-engined Miura was launched in 1966, and the company has never looked back. In 1974, in the midst of the first fuel crisis, the beautiful Miura gave way to the futuristic Countach, whose name reputedly comes from an exclamation of surprise in the local north-western Italian Piedmontese dialect. Once it had discovered its true calling as the rebel supercar manufacturer, and counterbalance to the Ferrari and Maserati ‘establishment’, Lamborghini’s imagination knew no bounds. The Diablo and Murciélago followed the Countach’s reign of kingpin supercar and international poster child, each clearly growing in power, speed and stature over its immediate predecessor. However, as dramatic, powerful and fast as the Murciélago was at last knockings with the LP670-4 SV of 2010, in engineering terms it was clearly a product of the late 20th Century. With many of the current supercar breed moving to carbon-fibre and other strong, lightweight materials, the Murciélago’s traditional aluminiumclad steel space-frame was simply too heavy, too labour-intensive to make, and insufficiently rigid and crash worthy to be considered for the next generation Lamborghini flagship.

Power comes from an all-new reinterpretation of the dry-sump Lamborghini V12, placed amidships and in-line. Subtle badges on the cars lower flanks

gressor’ aircraft, simulating the Soviet MIG-17, both in real training, and in the Top Gun movie. There is some serious theatre involved in firing up the Aventador. Turning the ignition key lights up the most impressive coloured digital instrument display this side of a front-line jet fighter.

The engine ‘Start’ button lies under a hinged, red flap in the centre console that looks like it could double as a missile launch button cover. This adds to the sense of drama, as well as the anticipation that something significant will happen when you push the button. That something is an explosion of noise from behind your head as air and fuel

combust between the cylinder heads and 12 lightweight piston crowns, venting burnt hydrocarbons to the atmosphere from the huge central exhaust. While the new motor also says ‘6.5 litres’ on its identification plate, its exact displacement is 6,498cc. This may be only 2cc more than the outgoing motor, but at 95.0 x 76.4mm, the very over-

79

TORQUE TALK square bore and stroke are a world away from the nearly square 88.0 x 89.0mm dimensions of its predecessor. Not since the original 3.5 litre V12 from the 1960s, has any Lamborghini V12 variant featured such over-square dimensions. While Porsche enthusiasts will no doubt be amused by the fact that the 76.4mm stroke is the same as recent 911 motors, this dramatic change in bore and stroke has also altered the character and sonic signature of the Lamborghini V12. Back in the late 1970s, I acquired a Japanese produced 12-inch LP that I still have today. Simply entitled ‘Supercars’, it is an exquisite recording of 10 of the world’s finest sportscars, including the Porsche 934, Ferrari 365GT BB and Lamborghini Miura being driven in anger at the famous Fuji International Speedway. You hear the driver’s footsteps leading up to each car, the click of the door unlatching and the slam as it shuts. Next, the whine of the fuel pump breaks the silence, the engine splutters into life from cold, and you hear the driver pumping the throttle to keep it from stalling. Those were the days. Then you are treated to the inspirational sounds of each car driving past, recorded by microphones placed in different places. There are also tracks recorded inside each car as the driver winds the motor up through the gears. Before I ever had the opportunity to drive these cars for real, I learned from this record that the sonic signatures of the Ferrari and Lamborghini 12-cylinder engines are distinctively different, a characteristic that continues today. Now, I have learned that the new, higher and faster-revving Lamborghini V12 sounds significantly different from its predecessor. I came to the conclusion that the main reasons are the shorter stroke whose greater number of firing pulses in a given time results in a higher pitched note, the variable valve timing, and the different exhaust design and length. Anoraks might be interested to know that the firing order of the original Lamborghini V12 was 1-7-4-10-2-8-6-12-

80

TORQUE TALK 3-9-5-11, and the all-new motor lights off its spark plugs in a 1-12-4-9-2-11-67-3-10-5-8 order. However, that has no bearing on its sonic signature. Where the old Lamborghini V12 used to start its climb to 8,000rpm with a deep, guttural bellow that built with revs, the new motor feels lighter on its feet and more eager to pick up. The typical deep V12 engine and exhaust note at low revs is still there, but it no longer feels like the sound is coming from the dungeon. As the revs build, more instruments join the orchestra, adding extra layers of induction, combustion and exhaust noise to the soundtrack. Between 6,000 and 8,000rpm, it produces the screaming V12 crescendo that Lamborghini fans will clearly recognise as one of their own. All things being equal, a more oversquare engine should in theory produce less torque. However, thanks to the above-mentioned VVT and the latest engine management system, the new V12 makes 690Nm of torque at 5,500rpm, comfortably out-punching the 660Nm at 6,500rpm of the LP670-4. Delivery is so smooth however, that you get one long sustained blast of power rather that any kind of second wind like a turbocharged motor. The thing that punches hardest is the upshift, and this, combined with the strong power delivery makes for a visceral combination of noise, thrust and sheer exhilaration when you have the chance to open the car up on a clear road. At 70kg, the seven-speed Lamborghini ISR gearbox is much lighter than a dual-clutch system, and shifts 140 percent faster that the e-gear system in the Gallardo. As a manu-matic, the ISR gearbox never going to be as smooth shifting as a dual-clutch system, and kicks brutally hard when you flat shift in Corsa mode. It is however, a big step up in speed from the e-gear, while the two automatic modes - Strada-auto and Sport-auto - work reasonably well in traffic. Launch Control promises the fastest acceleration from rest.

81

TORQUE TALK

At the end of the day though, while such a gearbox is admittedly lighter than the dual-clutch equivalent, you have to ask if the extra 30 or so kilograms really matters in the overall scheme of things, especially as a gearbox, like the engine and steering, is something you use constantly. While the ISR is the best of its breed, it feels crude when measured against the polished performance of the rest of the car. Electronics are a wonderful thing in that you can programme all manner of behaviour into a mechanical system. Just how incisive a drive you get depends on whether you pick the Strada, Sport or Corsa setting, each of which alters the parameters for engine, transmission, differential, steering and dynamic control. After playing with the settings, I concluded that Strada is too sluggish, while Corsa is best left for the racetrack. Thus, I chose Sport as my default setting. If you step out of a Ferrari Italia or McLaren MP4-12C into the Aventador, the one aspect of its dynamics that stands out immediately is ride quality. Where its two cheaper rivals have gone for active damping, the Aventador’s race-style pushrod suspension, using steel springs and gas dampers, is distinctly old school and firm with it. The Italia and MP4-12C both enjoyed an amazing ability to smother bumps

82

like a high performance saloon. In comparison, the first bump you hit in the Aventador delivers a throwback to the good old days. Frankly though, if not for these two new mid-priced supercars setting a new benchmark for ride quality, the issue would never arise.

Perhaps what is most impressive is the feeling of invincibility that builds as you push harder and harder, using more of the engine’s massive power reserves as you get to know the car better. Equally impressive is the eyeball popping retardation of the huge ceramic brakes.

On a practical note, the front suspension has a hydraulic lift system that raises the nose by 40mm at the touch of a button to clear parking ramps and speed bumps.

The chassis always rises to the challenge, delivering a fine balance of power that never existed in any of the Aventador’s progenitors. Indeed, the Aventador removes much of the element of danger, the fear that you would be thrown off into the scenery if you encountered a talent shortfall when driving a Diablo or Murciélago quickly. But considering the overall driving ability of the new rich buyers of such cars, this is no bad thing.

What is state-of-the-art here is the wonderfully polished hydraulic power steering, and the mind-bending levels of mechanical grip the four-wheeldrive system generates in league with the 255/35ZR19 and 3356/30ZR20 Pirelli tyres on 9.0J x 19 and 12.0J x 20-inch wheels. The electronically-controlled Haldex differential distributes just the right amount of power between the front and rear axles in milliseconds, and this is further supported by the rear axles limited slip differential and ESP acting on the front differential. Unless you enter a bend carrying way too much speed, the system will sort out how to get all the power down and rocket you out of a given bend as fast as possible. It might not be able to bend the laws of physics out of shape, but it feels like it comes close.

If you want visual drama in your supercar, the Aventador is the answer to your prayers. It also has a naturally aspirated engine whose responses and soundtrack are to die for. Only its old-tech gearbox and firm ride rankle sensibilities recently softened by experience of what is possible in these areas. For me personally, the Lamborghini Aventador is a bit of a conundrum. The undisputed poster child of the moment, it is an epic achievement in so many ways, yet a work in progress in others. It will be fascinating to see how the new kingpin supercar evolves over the coming years.

COSTA CUISINE

CURRY-NARY

Excellence Words by Laura-Jane Bruce

I

ndian cuisine is a complex one. It is quite an acquired taste, due to the array of unique ingredients and spices used, and needless to say, I have never considered it one of my favourite delicacies; until now! The food at Masala is incomparable to any other. The amalgamation of flavours and textures truly changed my opinion of Indian cuisine, and here’s why. Masala, the generic term for ‘spice’, dates back thousands of years, when India was heavily forested and agriculture was complemented with game hunting and forest produce. The blend of herbs, pulses and spices combine to create beautiful dishes, each with their own individual flair. Whether you desire aromatic tastes or heavily spiced twangs, there is a dish for all to enjoy, and Masala Restaurant in Benavista caters to all. Located opposite the Crown Plaza Hotel, it is a mere ten-minute drive from Puerto Banus. Offering the most exotic and delicious dishes from India, all are wonderfully authentic, and the recipes are a closely guarded secret, being passed down through generations to create the perfect end-result. The chefs are selected to fulfill the highest standards of Indian cuisine. The team’s aim is to provide the ultimate in regards to service and gastronomy ensuring you feel relaxed and at ease, the moment you walk through the door. We were greeted by a remarkable entrance, wooden doors amidst two carved Buddha’s, and welcomed inside by restaurant owner Hamza.

86

COSTA CUISINE

We dined on a Monday night, a time you would expect to be one of the more solemn nights, but as the evening developed, it was awash with hungry clients. Hamza led us to our table, nestled quietly in the corner of the expansive restaurant, and presented us with the impressive menu. Hamza kindly suggested dishes that would suit our tastes, all tailored to our desired level of spice. Firstly, prawn puri, lightly spiced served on a crispy Indian flatbread, the floury base immersing the puri paste. Secondly, a certified winner all-round, was stuffed tandoori mushrooms, filled with fresh vegetables, roasted in a traditional tandoor oven. The heat is generated by a charcoal or wood fire, burning within the tandoor itself, thus exposing the food to both radiant heat, convection cooking, and smoking from the fat and food juices that drip on to the heat source. To continue our gratifying feast, we were served a selection of traditional Indian dishes, along with a few we were not so accustomed to. The vegetable biryani was classically rich and pungent, and was complemented by a rich and creamy tikka Masala, one of the most popular dishes, flavoured with aromatic spices and smoked in their clay oven. A dish I had never encountered before ensued, chicken pasanda, derived from a dish served at the court of the Mughal emperors. The chicken fillets had been marinated in a mild sauce and stuffed with special spices. Our final offering was handi, a dish exclusive to Masala Restaurant. Aromatic Indian spices are collected from Indian villages and cooked with onion, tomato and pepper and their unique spicy sauce. We requested ours to be cooked with a kick, and boy, it blew my head off, but my fellow diners nodded in agreement that this dish was certainly something to rave about. All were accompanied with a fragrant pilau rice and classic naan bread, perfect for soaking up the flavoursome sauces, and for calming my palate after the spicy handi.

Don’t fear though, you can request it to be served milder if you have a similar tongue to mine, (I find Ginger Snaps too much spice to handle!) The textures, aromas and strengths of all the plates combined for a decadent banquet. Ideal for dining in, takeaway and home delivery why not push the boat out and try something different?

Simply tell the waiters your preferences, and you can be sure they will find something to suit you. Masala Restaurant C. Com, El Pilar, Local 2 (opposite the Crown Plaza) Estepona Tel. 900 525 801 masalamarbellaindianrestaurant.com

THE PERFECT Delicacy Nestled in Le Village, between stylish café restaurants, chic hairdressing salons and Marbella’s only urban underground club, we find Ali Winehouse. Mimicking the chic delis that are cropping up in various in-vogue locations all over the world, the position is perfect for sampling exquisite liquors and the finest nibbles on the coast. We asked Ali Reza a few questions regarding his unique business. Can you tell us a bit about Alil Winehouse? We sell and source an extensive range of French, Italian and Spanish wines, ranging in price from €20 - €13,000, if you’re feeling really extravagant! They range from the popular well-known protos and mugas, to the more obscure Vina Sastre and Contino. We also sell champagnes, such as Cristal, Dom Perignon, and will soon offer the exclusive, St. Tropez Rose, plus the customary spirits, along with a few speciality ones. You can even purchase high quality sprits and we will store them in your personal locker behind the bar, so you can have a quality drink whenever you want. Everything is temperature controlled and stored in the optimum conditions, meaning all are ready to drink straight from the shelf. We also deliver in the Marbella area, so you don’t even have to leave your sofa to enjoy one of our tipples. We organise regular wine tastings, and if you’re looking for a case of something in particular, we are more than happy to order it in for you. What were your inspirations? Wine is something I have always had an interest in, and I know I’m not alone; Marbella as a universal community enjoy fine wines. As a hobby, I have visited many French

châteaux and Spanish bodegas in the past, and from that instant, wanted to learn more. This evolved into wanting to open Ali Winehouse. How would you describe Ali Winehouse? I would have to describe it as an inviting place, enabling you to choose from an excellent selection of wines; with the added luxury of being able to sample the wines before you buy. In basic terms, I wanted to create a friendly atmosphere, and I think I have achieved it. Where does the name come from? It’s simple. I’m a man of simplicity. I previously owned a local supermarket called S Market, which I then developed into a wine bar and deli; therefore it was an easy decision to name it Ali Winehouse. Where do you source your produce? I have a couple of great wine suppliers and local bodegas where I source the majority of the wines we sell. Our hams and cheeses are of the finest quality. Our quesos are mainly sourced from the region of La Mancha, famous for the original Manchego cheeses. Also, our Jamon Ibericon from Sala-

manca is the premium ham from free-range pigs in northern Spain, cured for 36 months. This proves all of our products are authentic. Do you keep up with wine trends? Yes, ecological wines are very popular at the moment. We currently stock Pago El Espino 2007 from Cortijo Los Aguilares in Ronda, where the majority of wines produced are harvested by hand. This eliminates pesticides, synthetic sprays and chemical additives from the winemaking process, thus making for a more pungent taste. What should people expect when they visit Ali Winehouse? They will definitely receive a warm and friendly welcome and will be assisted by either Paco or myself. Paco has over 30 years experience as a sommelier and has previously worked at Hotel Puente Romano. With our combined knowledge and expertise, we can 100% guarantee to find you a wine to suit your tastes. Ali Winehouse C.C Le Village, Ctra de Istan, Marbella Tel. 952 763 595 / 629 507 386

WHEN THE STARS COME OUT Over a windy February weekend, three sporting legends congregated in La Sala in Puerto Banus. Famed for its celebrity sightings, Chelsea’s left back Ashley Cole was taking a well-deserved break from his gruelling schedule as he dined for breakfast, lunch and dinner over a Thursday to Sunday period. Thankfully, La Sala’s decedent menu meant that Cole never had to repeat his cuisine choices. On the Thursday evening, on a table adjacent to Ashley, Mike England, Wales’ former manager and snooker legend Dennis Taylor, enjoyed dinner with friends. Earlier in the day they had partaken in a competitive game of golf, before retiring to the restaurant for a much needed drink before their return to England. lasalabanus.com

The sensation of walking among hundreds of butterflies is no doubt one of the greatest fantasies for many, especially children. At the Butterfly Park in Benalmadena there are between 1,500 and 2,000 butterflies. You can also enjoy a great variety of plants from Bali, Costa Rica and Thailand. These ornamental plants have been specifically selected as their flowers are rich in nectar, thus providing food for the butterflies. Butterfly Park Benalmadena Open Everyday 10am-6pm Avda de Retamar s/n (next to the Buddhist Temple) mariposariodebenalmadena.com 951 211 196

Dances with Wolves

Lobo Park was founded as a private initiative in 2002 in the reserved natural area of Antequera. Guided tours (in both Spanish and English) allow you to view the different wolves in a natural habitat, learn about their behaviour and how they communicate, play, hunt and eat. The route features observation platforms where visitors can come in close contact with the animals. This beautiful park offers families fun and excitement, stimulating education programs, as well as a peaceful place to enjoy nature. There is something new to discover on every visit.
