Annual Awards 2021
It’s with so much pride that I celebrate every team member in this publication. Regardless of your role, your purposeful contribution has extended well beyond your job description. You have brought our values to the fore, with a clear focus on delivering an exceptional experience in the toughest circumstances. This year once again, we find ourselves celebrating a little differently – together yet apart. But this does not stop us from recognising you and your invaluable contribution. Thank you for your dedication. Thank you for making this a wonderful place to work. And thank you for delivering Icon’s mission to give the best care possible, to as many people as possible, as close to home as possible. You embody our values in the very best ways. She led the pharmacy through several audits, including a recent TGA quality inspection in which we received glowing feedback. She has been responsible for managing the transition of several clinical trials to SAS supply to ensure continued patient access to treatment. This required significant coordination between multiple parties including the research team, trial sponsor, Charm team and site staff. She has managed to do all this while maintaining a timely and efficient clinical service. Her enthusiasm, organisation, and willingness to continue to learn has seen her grow as a leader, and she is a major contributor to the continued high level of clinical trial service offered by River City Pharmacy.

Jan ensured that doctors had the confidence and knowledge to engage with new referrers and patients, working with stakeholders both on-site and off to ensure Icon was always front of mind when considering radiation therapy. Project Officer/Manager, Medical Billing & Finance, Icon Cancer Centre, Australia In early 2021, Alisa stepped into a project management role to deliver several medical billing projects across the Australian cancer care division. Since taking on this role, Alisa has drawn on a deep understanding of the Australian healthcare industry, including public and private medical billing and private practice management. She has used this knowledge to help Icon navigate the intricacies of the national Medicare Billing Schedule and reduce the sum of accumulated debt within the portfolio by a staggering 50%. Procurement Assistant, Corporate Office Brisbane, Australia Amelia has taken a deep understanding of inventory from working inside hospital pharmacy into her centralised procurement role, resulting in a comprehensive view of the full procurement function that helps guide her day to day role and provides a valuable insight into better ways of doing things. During the year, Amelia picked up the management of our site stocktakes and worked closely with sites to improve the understanding of inventory within AX and continue to improve and refine the accuracy and reliability of inventory data. In doing so, Amelia also added a new perspective to the analysis of stocktakes and identified opportunities to continue to refine and improve the AX system. In a busy role that manages high transaction volumes, unique challenges and requests, and detailed analysis and investigation at the same time, Amelia handles this with grace and understanding.
Ben Archibald-Heeren
Senior Medical Physicist, Icon Cancer Centre, Australia Ben is to be commended for leading the development and implementation of the TrueBeam radiation therapy system commissioning and reporting process. This is a project that has been in development by various members of the medical physics team for over five years, but Ben has taken it to the next level during the past 12 months. Extensive thought has gone into streamlining this process while taking real time advantage of our historical data from other linear accelerators. The process is now refined to a point where it is truly innovative and we will see a tangible impact on the Group’s ability to efficiently open new clinical sites and treat more patients. Ben has been developing a workflow and script (in conjunction with our Varian scripting engineering team) that will automate the generation of a treatment plan for breast cancer patients receiving radiation therapy. The development of the script has been highly complex with many hurdles, but Ben has overcome all challenges. Once pilot testing of the script has concluded and is implemented more widely, it will provide significant time savings and improve consistency, allowing team members to focus on other tasks and most importantly our patients.

In addition to being a production technician, Sam is also part of the workplace health and safety (WHS) committee and 5S to which she has made many changes. The most innovative change that Sam has made is the introduction of QR codes to our first-aid kits. This implementation means that technicians simply scan the QR code once they use an item in the kit, and Sam will receive an email stating what consumables have been used. Sam subsequently rolled this out to all of Mt KuringGai’s first-aid kits and is now rolling it out to all sites. The change has involved Sam creating tutorial videos of how to make the QR code, alongside training the entire Mt Kuring-Gai site.

Emma handles a number of issues that arise daily, some more serious than others, but her quality improvement mindset is what sets her apart. She is constantly focusing on how things can be done better and strives to ensure the safest and best care possible is provided to patients. In this year alone she has improved the handover process at Wesley, the identification checking of treatments prior to their administration, and has worked with the infusion pump suppliers to program the pumps to set an alarm for blood transfusion observations. Her leadership and tenacity to see these through is inspiring.
Joel Veide
Production Supervisor, Compounding Mt Kuring-Gai, Australia Joel always brings such a positive attitude to his team and has been amazing in leading them during 2021. He has worked tirelessly with Mt Kuring-Gai’s extractable volumes and his ideas have helped the site be more efficient and reduce wastage. An example of Joel’s excellent work is his management of the 5S Lean system rollout. The system relies on visual cues and is standardised for all team members to reduce waste and optimise productivity. It also ensures everything has a place, which is known by all teams, and is clean, accessible, and sustainable. Joel has been pivotal in ensuring production is in a state of control and has reduced unnecessary effort and time. His outside of the box thinking to bring this to life, as well as his management of expectations for both the early and late oncology teams and time spent delivering advice to other departments on how it should be introduced, was very impressive. Joel’s positive performance management has led to a very strong team capable of taking on any task, and his kindness and dedication does not go unnoticed.

Katrina Hooper
National Dispensing Manager, Icon Pharmacy River City, Australia In her role as National Dispensing Manager, Katrina is incredibly proactive in maintaining effective communication with the pharmacy division. Following challenges and new changes in a non-Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) implementation, Katrina took it in her stride to write and train people on over 10 documents. She has communicated professionally to all pharmacy teams and has also been training the Icon Cancer Centre site managers to improve the charging and claiming to health funds. Her suggestions included process improvements to maximise patient support with applications for expensive drugs unavailable on the PBS. This communication then led to Katrina organising training education sessions for all pharmacy services teams, which required diligence, tenacity, and patience in reviewing many sites PBS claims and the reconciliation. Katrina remains calm, measured, communicative, and professional in every query she is asked and works to help sites troubleshoot and fix issues.

Mathew has been instrumental in solving logistical problems and finding new efficient ways that have had significant customer impacts. Team Finalists
Team Finalists Icon Cancer Centre and Icon Specialist Centre Central Building, Hong Kong The Central Building team worked above and beyond during what has been a challenging year. Despite extra responsibilities coming their way due to stretched resources, they continued to take it in their stride and work hard to deliver the best care possible to patients. This involved taking time outside of work hours and on weekends to provide quality and consistent care. They have worked collaboratively and with a positive attitude throughout all of these challenges to make sure the centre’s patients were in good hands. As well as this, they have continued to put forward innovative and resourceful ideas to find ways to resolve any urgent problems that come their way.
Team Finalists Epic Pharmacy Port Macquarie, Australia The Port Macquarie team’s incredible effort and commitment to their hospital and their community was in full display this year. Asked to support the hospital’s public COVID vaccination clinic, the entire team rolled up their sleeves to assist to ensure the vaccine rollout was successful. The team showed Epic resilience with the many challenges thrown at them, including a flood, and with the use of their practical skills and connection and collaboration within their own team and other healthcare professionals in the community they were a vital piece of this successful rollout. This was a major commitment for the team, and they never missed a beat, with their usual high standard of service to patients within the hospital continuing and feedback reflecting the attention to personalised patient care and the efforts to ease patient concerns and support their healthcare experiences uninterrupted.
Team Finalists Enterprise Project Management Office (ePMO), Corporate Office Brisbane, Australia ePMO are the ultimate quiet achievers, working diligently in the background to bring our mission to reality – delivering care closer to home for people who need it. Construction has been an incredibly tough space to work in over the last two years, with restrictions in travel and workforce dynamics challenging our ability to deliver the breadth of Icon’s development portfolio. Despite COVID-19, which has seen a rapidly changing landscape dictated by lockdowns and government protocols, the ePMO team has managed to deliver 15 major construction and refurbishment projects this year, alongside five projects which are about to launch in the next six months. Their commitment to bringing these new developments to fruition and engaging the broader operational business to get the doors open and patients treated is incredible. This year cemented a truly global ePMO team with project managers in both Mainland China and Singapore joining the team to keep projects moving in a very tough environment. Beyond this they have leveraged technology used within the business to enable the commissioning and licensing of facilities where being onsite was simply not possible. Their ability to maintain control of project schedules and think outside the square when the world is in flux, shows their deep capability and commitment to our values - from energy to on-purpose, innovate and connect, and all to ensure at the end we can nurture the patients who need our care. The drive, coordination, and iconic effort from the team has been fundamental in getting things across the line, and the dedication put into projects is beyond compare. Well done on an outstanding year ePMO team!
Team Finalists Icon Cancer Centre Cairns and Icon Cancer Centre Liz Plummer, Australia This year the Cairns team worked tirelessly to get the new private radiation oncology centre up and running, all whilst continuing to support and assist the Liz Plummer team both remotely and on-site. Their commitment to opening the centre was impressive as they tackled all tasks, including those outside of their usual roles, and worked tirelessly with stretched resources to ensure it was a success.
Despite a challenging year involving several COVID-related impacts and difficulties with machines, on top of a continual high workload, the team has displayed flexibility and dedication to looking after their patients. They have also recently passed accreditation which is another demonstration of their terrific work. As well as this, they have made notable improvements to providing culturally safe care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients. The success of the Cairns team comes down to the culture and shared team goal of ensuring the best possible care for all patients within the region.
Team Finalists Icon Cancer Centre Novena, Singapore Despite a challenging year with several changes including renovations, team movements, and COVID-related difficulties, the Icon Cancer Centre Novena team has continued to demonstrate resilience and worked hard to manage their day-today site operations efficiently with minimal supervision. All team members have consistently supported each other throughout the year which is indicative of their incredible teamwork. With the expansion of the centre, the team had to move to several temporary sites. This was a significant logistical challenge that required good communication and diligence to overcome obstacles. Despite the complexity, the team stepped up to meet the needs of the patients and doctors, ensuring patient care was not compromised. Beyond this, the Novena team has also readily supported the Mt Alvernia site during busy periods without a second thought.
Team Finalists Icon Pharmacy Southport, Australia The Icon Pharmacy Southport team has done an extraordinary job this year to improve medication safety and clinical outcomes for patients. This has involved connecting with nursing teams to create cooperative processes that ensure all blood test results are reviewed before treatments and clinical reviews are actioned when indicated. The hard work delivered by the Southport team has created a connection between the pharmacy and nursing teams, which shows how both can work together to achieve the best clinical outcomes for patients. This project has seen the entire centre working together towards a common goal of providing the best care possible for Icon’s patients. On top of implementing improvements, the team is always willing to help and has continued to provide a tremendous service and demonstrate great teamwork within their own team and the wider centre.
Team Finalists NSW New Site Recruitment, Icon Cancer Centre, Australia Over a three-month period, the New South Wales new site recruitment team met with and interviewed more than 50 candidates for cancer centres including Concord, Maitland, and Norwest. Rather than doing so individually, team members leveraged each other’s strengths and perspectives to meet and prioritise each candidate. This ensured those successful were the perfect cultural, functional and operational fit. This was a highly labour-intensive process conducted as efficiently and professionally as possible, and is also an extraordinary effort and one the team should be very proud of. Each member of this team dedicated their time and energy to assembling and ensuring the new New South Wales Icon teams are set up for success in their critical roles to support both doctors and patients.
Team Finalists Paperless Project, Compounding Division, Australia The team behind the Paperless Project has worked tirelessly over 15 months to bring to life a milestone that delivered significant environmental, quality, and financial benefits to Slade Health and Icon. The project involved every discipline of Slade Health operations and impacted the way the entire workforce operated on a daily basis. Some of the work the team conducted included a major software development and update of Slade AXIS production software, a redesign of software and equipment, facility upgrades, an IT installation and development of training materials. Across all three sites, 350 compounding team members were retrained over a six-week period in a control room. Overall, the Paperless Project team has demonstrated dedication and resilience to this significant milestone.
