IMPACT REPORT 2023

This World Cancer Day 2024, I’m proud to share Icon Group’s Impact Report outlining our contribution and commitment to tackling the growing cancer burden through innovation, research, and comprehensive cancer care for people around the world. This report shares our teams’ efforts through 2023 as leading providers across our divisions – cancer care, research, pharmacy, and compounding – combining to deliver care through 3.5 million patient interactions around the world including Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Mainland China, Hong Kong and beyond. Our global team of over 3,500 dedicated healthcare professionals delivered more than 500 thousand treatments across radiation oncology and day oncology, recruited over 270 patients to clinical trials, and compounded more than 1.2 million infusions. Alongside this, we introduced new technologies and treatment techniques, moving Icon a step forward in the fight against cancer and our ability to help and provide hope to more people, families, and communities. With our solid foundation of strong industry partnerships, an experienced global network of specialists and expert teams committed to continually improving healthcare, Icon expanded our operations to bring our services to new regions. Our partnership with Nuffield Health will see us deliver treatment in the United Kingdom, and our joint venture with Sunsuria Healthcare establishes Icon in Malaysia to help enhance cancer care in the ASEAN region. I’d like to share Icon’s thanks to our patients, people and our partners – together, we’re providing world-class care that feels like home and building hope for a brighter future. Many thanks

Bringing hope to more people, closer to home In another year of delivering exceptional care, we’re proud to share how our dedicated teams and technology and research capabilities are helping provide new hope and more time for patients, families, and communities across the globe…

There is absolutely no doubt that in my mind as a result of the treatment and trial I have been so fortunate to have received that my life has been extended far beyond what I could have expected.” Ian, Icon clinical trial patient I didn’t realise that there were people out there somewhere making my medication especially for me, I just assumed the pharmacist took it off the shelf just like this. Thank all of your people for doing that.” Patient on their first day of treatment We didn’t want to just sit in one location and settle for patient first, explorer second. With centres around Australia, Icon means we can keep travelling and lead the life that we want to live to get out and see all the beautiful things around us and simply live life.” Bronwyn, Icon Australia patient I’m grateful to be able to participate in a clinical trial and by doing so, I can play a part in the development and improvement of medications to help fight cancer.” Ong Guat Eng, Icon Singapore patient I wore a different pair of colourful socks to treatment every day. The Icon team surprised me on my last day of treatment by wearing their own colourful socks. They all had their trouser bottoms turned up to expose the socks and I thought this was a wonderful gesture, I was almost overcome with emotion.” Michael, Icon Australia patient

The latest radiation therapy technology changing lives every day Rockingham resident, Robert is grateful to have world-class cancer care close to home. Robert is one of the first patients to be treated on Icon Cancer Centre Rockingham’s second linear accelerator (linac), which went live in June 2023. The centre, in Western Australia, is home to a new advanced Varian TrueBeam linac with cutting-edge IDENTIFY technology, which offers patients the option to have tattoo-less treatment. This technology enhances treatment accuracy, reduces treatment duration and eliminates the need for permanent markings, which some patients find to be an unwelcome daily reminder of their cancer. The linac is also equipped with Varian’s HyperArc technology for patients with multiple brain lesions or metastasis to the brain. As the first provider in Western Australia, this advanced technique delivers precise radiation therapy to multiple intracranial lesions with greater efficiency, speed, accuracy, and patient comfort while limiting doses to surrounding healthy brain tissue. Robert (79) was diagnosed with prostate cancer in November 2022. Faced with the prospect of a two-hour round trip each day to have radiation therapy treatment at Fiona Stanley Hospital,

where he had his diagnostic tests, Robert was thrilled to discover he could have his treatment just 10 minutes from home at Icon Cancer Centre Rockingham. “It was magic being able to have my treatment close to home,” says Robert, who finished 39 sessions of radiation therapy treatment in July 2023. “The centre is 10 minutes from home, so I could drive myself to treatment and it didn’t take up much of my day. “The team at Rockingham are wonderful. It’s like a family atmosphere there. The staff are friendly, and you get to know other patients while you are waiting for treatment. “I had treatment on the new machine towards the end of my treatment cycle. I think it’s great that more local patients can be treated at Icon with the best technology available.” Robert celebrated his 80th birthday in November with a getaway to Busselton with his wife, Joyce. In 2021, Icon became the first in the southern hemisphere to install IDENTIFY technology, and now has 17 around the country.

It was magic being able to have my treatment close to home.” Robert, Icon patient

Turning the dial in regional Victoria In April 2023, Icon, in partnership with Mildura Health Private Hospital, opened a state-of-the-art cancer centre in the heart of Mildura in regional Victoria, Australia. This centre brought world-class comprehensive cancer care to the local community who previously had to travel to Bendigo, Melbourne or Adelaide to receive treatment, often at a considerable cost. In under a year, the centre has transformed local care, completing more than 3,200 individual radiation therapy treatment sessions with over 130 patients completing their radiation therapy treatment. The team has brought care closer to home and have saved an estimated total of 800,000 kilometres of travel, eliminating some of the many burdens associated with a cancer diagnosis. Denise is one of the many residents benefitting from the local centre. As a registered nurse with a distinguished career in healthcare, Denise has spent over 30 years caring for others. As the General Manager for the Lower Western Sector of the Far West Local Health District, Denise oversees health services across Broken Hill, Menindee, Wentworth, Dareton, Balranald, Ivanhoe, White Cliffs, Tibooburra and Wilcannia.

IMPACT REPORT 2023

“It has made us have very real and confronting conversations as a family. But I don’t want my cancer to define me. While my cancer can’t be cured, I plan to live with it for as long as I can.” To help with the pain management of her cancer, Denise was referred to the recently opened Icon Cancer Centre Mildura for radiation therapy treatment. Palliative radiation therapy can help improve quality of life by controlling symptoms associated with cancer and reducing pain levels. These services support a population of over 36,000 people across the second largest geographic area (194,949m2) of all the local health districts in NSW. With long days and extensive travel required for her job, Denise wasn’t overly concerned when she started feeling run-down in early 2023.

Denise says she is “extremely grateful” for being able to access this treatment locally.

“I was feeling tired, but I put it down to my busy lifestyle. I then noticed a lump in my breast and my nipple started changing in appearance. At the time I didn’t have a regular GP, so I went to the local hospital,” said Denise.

If Icon Mildura wasn’t here, I would have had to travel to Melbourne to have the radiation therapy. That’s four weeks away from my loved ones.”

The mother-of-two was sent for a series of scans, which revealed a heartbreaking diagnosis – metastatic breast cancer. “I was told there was nothing they could do, as it was in my bones. I was shattered. It was so confronting. I had aches and pains, and I was tired, but I didn’t think anything was seriously wrong.” Denise said her family, especially her husband Tim, who is also a registered nurse and health service manager, and the couple’s two daughters Grace and Lily-Rose have rallied around her since the diagnosis. And it is this support that is keeping Denise as positive as she can be.

Thanks to Icon, I could stay in Mildura. Every day I could take my daughter to school and pick her up. That time I get to spend with her is precious. Tim was also able to come to my appointments and keep working. It gave us more control over our lives during this difficult time. I don’t think I would be as well centred as I am if I had to travel for treatment.” Learn more about Icon Cancer Centre Mildura.
