Esko Lindqvist (Finland) “I haven’t really noticed any major differences - Finland and the Netherlands are so similar, that I even found it surprising. The only thing that I noticed so far is that Dutch people are more social and easier to talk to than Finnish, which was a pleasant discovery.”

We know that exchange students often have a hard time getting accustomed to their new environment at the NHTV, especially if they come from a completely different background. Different cultures, different traditions, different food, different... well, everything! We asked several of our fellow exchanges to share their experiences with the Dutch quirks.

(South Korea) “The biggest difference for me here is the abundance of racial diversity: here, I see more diverse races in my everyday life than I ever did in Korea. There are minor lifestyle differences as well, such as drinking tap water or wearing shoes at home. There is also a strict smoking prohibition in Korea and it’s unusual to have people smoking so openly in public.”

Madison Raine Gielda (USA) “Probably the biggest problem for me here is the different perception people have regarding personal space. I, as well as other Americans, have a rather big personal bubble around me, and here I’ve often had people cut in line in front of me, since they thought I wasn’t waiting in queue.”

On a Thursday evening you sit on your friends couch again with a beer in your hand. You look down and spot a roll on your belly that didn’t exist before. I think it’s time to go back to the gym, you say, and your friend chuckles. We’re students, we never have time to go to the gym. Worry not mate, here’s your savior. Instead of going aaall the way to the gym, we have some easy alternatives for you to stay in shape. Jumping rope: this is for the ones that want to see result fast. With jumping rope you train your legs, butt, arms and belly! If you do it for 30 minutes, you burn between 300 and 400 calories. Hula hooping: hula hoop between 10 and 15 minutes per day to get a tighter waist, a stronger lower-back and a flatter stomach. Dancing: this sport probably makes you the happiest. If you go all-in, you use every part of your body. In that case you’ll burn around 400 calories in an hour. Close the curtains and put on your favorite playlist. Doesn’t feel like working out, does it? Walking: go to your nearest forest or park and enjoy nature while burning 70 calories per kilometre. Not only it’s a good way to lose weight, it’s also good for your heart, blood pressure, cholesterol, bones, muscles, mood and even memory! Turn your chores into a work-out: focus on the chores that burn the most calories like vacuuming (180 calories per hour) or scrubbing the tub (250 calories per hour)! You’ll kill two birds with one stone, but it would be better to not actually kill birds though... Profit it is! Yoga: the best thing about yoga is that the only things you need for this is your body and a mat. If you practice the average yoga exercise, you’ll burn 260 calories per hour.

Summer Essentials and Best Beaches for an

Unforgettable Summer Adventure

Despite the fact that we are at the crisis point of this academic year - everyone is going crazy with collecting as many credits as possible and finding a good placement - we all put a lot of effort in this, because we know that summer break is coming in two months.

Let’s face it, Our generation usually plans the summer journey at the very last moment. We tend to not care a lot where our destination is (as long as it’s hot and sunny) or what we are carrying with us... We only really care about who we are going with, because the crew makes the fun, right? However, we believe that there are some essentials your holiday cannot go without and we are here to share them with you.

Firstly, an essential part in order to plan the rest, like what you’re bringing to the beach, is to determine what you are travelling with. This way you can select either the most urgent outfit pieces or your entire wardrobe. After determining that, it is time for the most fun part:

b eeeaaac h!

11 Here, the main role is played by picking a trendy swimsuit and a sufficient sunscreen. A beach day is not a beach day without them (on a different note: it could be if you choose to go topless and visit a designated beach territory). Though, sunscreen is a must at any time and anywhere the whole summer. In addition to the accessories, you can add a bright colored towel, a hat and sunglasses. Do not forget to bring a book or magazine and your phone for cool Instagram photos. Last but not least, you will experience memorizing beachy days thanks to the amazing people with whom you will spend hours laying on the sand, share beers or play water volleyball. Enjoy! Now, we would like to present you some of the best beaches in the world. Yes, we know it is actually quite expensive for most of us to go there, but a bit of inspiration is never a bad idea.

Grace Bay, Providenciales Turcos and Caicos White sugar sand beaches with a hundred shades of blue and green water.

Playa Paraiso, Cuba Picture perfect! The bluest water in the world.

Anse Lazio, Seychelles: Crystal clear and warm waters, sun and powder white sand.

Flamenco Beach, Puerto Rico: Beach and mountains combined in one breathtaking picture.

One Pot Meal

13

Do you know the feeling when you come back home from school and think “Ugh, I need to cook”? Afterwards you have to clean everything of course, which is even worse than cooking. To solve this problem, we have created a perfect and really tasty one pot meal for you. We will give you this pasta salad recipe. You can eat this meal with approximately ten people or you save some for the next day. Additionally, it is easy and fast to prepare, not expensive and you don’t have to clean up a lot in the end when you actually prefer to relax. Sounds good right? Well, let’s get started then!

Preparation // ± 15 minutes Ingredients // 500 gram of the kind of pasta you like (we like fusilli so we will use this for the recipe!) 1 cucumber 1 little box of cherry tomatoes Grated cheese Arugula leaves Green pesto Smoked chicken and/or ham

Instructions // Boil the water for the pasta and put the fusilli in the pan whenever the water is boiling. Now you can prepare the rest of the meal. Cut the cucumber and smoked chicken into thin slices and cut the cherry tomatoes into halves or quarters. Put them in a bowl together with the arugula leaves. If the pasta is ready, you can cool it down quickly by sprinkling it with cold water. Now put this in the bowl together with the pesto and grated cheese. Mix it all together and you’re done! Easy right? Author: Carlijn Peeters Designer: Lydia Staplehurst

TIPS TO RECHARGE YOURSELF

17

We all know what it feels like to have days off, don’t have any deadlines and get tons of sleep – in our dreams... So how can you free your mind from all your work? We listed some tips for you!

Early mornings, ugh... You’ve been rushing to get to your lecture on time, you still feel tired and you are not looking forward to listening for two hours. Luckily there is one friend that helps you to get through the day: caffeine! Therefore, one of our tips – maybe the most important one – is to grab a coffee before your lecture starts. Now that you are able to survive your early lectures, it might be wise to look into the other parts of the day! Something that can really help you to relax is listening to music. You can do it day and night and you can choose a type of music that perfectly fits to your mood! Last but not least, it is always nice to watch a movie at night. According to us, Brewers, it is the perfect form of escapism! Grab some popcorn, invite friends and immerse yourself in somebody else’s world. Plus, there is a smaller chance of binge-watching than when watching a series! Hopefully, these tips can help you to deal with your lack of sleep and make you feel a bit better during the day!

A Closer Look Into The Brewery IMEM – Tales of Ragmoria: The Fabled

Mike van Merode Author: Rachel Sommers Designer: Sten Mols

25

During the third block of the first year, all IMEM students have to create an interactive children’s book. Mike van Merode, who is a second year IMEM student, worked on this interesting project last year. Together with Robin Kuijper, Marieke Peters, Courtney van Oers and Mihai Popa, he created the book Tales of Ragmoria: The Fabled. Since the group was inspired by medieval stories, they eventually decided to make a fantasy story that is set in the medieval world of Ragmoria. The story tells the tale of two brothers who have a complicated relationship. While Liam is training to become a knight, he runs into his brother who disappeared fifteen years earlier. The book, which is written in diary style, teaches the readers about the importance of family and willpower. Besides its thrilling storyline, it also includes nice interactive elements. These interactive elements were created by Mike, but his work didn’t stop there! “I helped where necessary. For example, I helped writing the story and drawing the pictures.” According to Mike, it was a real team effort. Each week during Production House, they sat together to make Tales of Ragmoria: The Fabled as beautiful and exciting as possible. Besides that, a lot of spare time was used to create the book. “It basically took the entire block from start to 5 minutes before the deadline.” During the creative process, Mike and his team members ran into quite some obstacles. “The main difficulty was getting the story right. We altered it an incredible amount of times, based on the feedback we received from our supervisor.” However, Mike really enjoyed writing the story. “Everyone was always incredibly energetic when coming up with new elements which made the story a lot better. It felt really rewarding when the story was solid.” Besides that, he learned a lot about Adobe InDesign as well as writing stories! Great job guys!

26

IGAD –

The Experience Machine

Alvaro Latova

27

Another interesting project that is being created at this very moment is the project of Alvaro Latova, a second year IGAD student. He was asked to create a 1st/3rd person action game in which the player should solve adventurous 3D puzzles. He came up with the idea to create a futuristic machine, which throws the player into a virtual dimension where the player will use different abilities such as problem solving and memory to keep on going. “I always try to make things differently, even if it’s just a small detail.” For the creation of The Experience Machine, Alvaro has mainly been inspired by Antichamber. This inspiration can be seen when looking at the general concept of the game. However, the game was going in a totally different direction in the beginning. “After realizing that the teacher wanted it to be done differently, I needed to make big changes and get rid of a lot of work already done.” I guess that we all know that struggle... As annoying and frustrating it can be to have to change something in a project, doing so also enables you to learn something! “I think the more guidance you get, the more likely you are to get it right, as you know exactly in which direction you should go.” Besides this, Alvaro learned a lot about his own way of thinking, working and visualizing projects. So, what exactly does he enjoy most while working on The Experience Machine? “I love watching other people play it. This allows me to understand the players’ way of thinking.” If you are curious what the game will eventually look like, keep your eyes open for its trailer as well as the upcoming IGAD events, such as the Play Day!

Recommendations: Games, Movies, Music Music // Gorillaz (release date: TBA) Has it really been six years since Gorillaz’s last album? Apparently it has - the animated virtual band had their last release, The Fall, in 2011, and since then we haven’t really heard or seen much of them anywhere. While rumors of a potential new Gorillaz album started off way back in 2015, the whole story behind it was supported only by rumors and occasional announcements. As of September 2016 however, the band started dropping new content on all their social media channels, with the biggest revelation being the release of their first song in six years - Hallelujah Money, a day before Donald Trump’s inauguration. Could this be some sort of a bold political statement, given the song’s text? All we know is that we are following any news revolving this album with a very close eye.

Games // Red Dead Redemption 2 (release date: TBA) Everything Rockstar delivers pretty much always falls under the criteria for a masterpiece. With Red Dead Redemption being the crown jewel in their arsenal, the stakes are high for its sequel, as fans expect an even more improved openworld experience. We are put at ease though - the game’s graphics look gorgeous - at least from what we can tell from the trailer. From what we know about the game already (which isn’t much at this point), the studio seeks to expand the multiplayer experience and there are rumors that the game will serve as a prequel to John Marston’s adventures from the original title.

31 Concert // Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds UK and Europe tour (Ziggo dome, 6 October) Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds is probably a band that most of you aren’t that familiar with, but is one that certainly deserves more attention. Especially since their last album Skeleton Tree (which came out in 2016) is extremely personal for Nick Cave, the band’s vocal and founder - the sudden death of his 15 year old son during the recording sessions has taken its toll and reflects deeply on many of the song lyrics. This upcoming tour will be the first one that showcases their newest album and fans are eagerly anticipating the experience that Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds are bound to deliver to them. Be sure to grab your tickets quickly, since they are sure to sell out fast!

Movie // War for the Planet of the Apes (release date: 13 July) The third installment of the rebooted Planet of the Apes trilogy will see Caesar and his ape colony take on an army of humans in a full-blown conflict, with Andy Serkis reprising his role as Caesar. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was a brilliant sequel that really raised the bar for the whole franchise and with its director Matt Reeves returning as well, it seems like a safe bet that War For the Planet of the Apes will be just as good, if not better. Plus, continuous improvements in CGI and motion-capture technology are bound to give us the most realistic apes yet. Should the sequel deliver, the trilogy will stand as a testament to Hollywood franchise reboots done right. Author: Snezhina Piskova Designer: Lydia Staplehurst

The Creative Lab Every year, the Creative Lab gets to participate in the Go Short - International Short Film Festival, on one condition: they must present something new and groundbreaking. This year they have made an augmented reality film for the HoloLens. The HoloLens is a device that projects the digital into the real world, so it’s on the border between augmented and mixed reality. The film that they created is called The Dancer Awakens and it’s a dancing girl that is projected onto the table. There are antagonists that try to push her back into the box she came from, but if she dances the right way flowers will appear that chase the dark figures away. It’s a narrative told through dance, presented on a table top. The festival took place from the 5th to the 9th of April, and for those interested there’s a making-of video to be found online!

In the last issue of BREWED we discussed interesting VR apps that you can download and use at home - on your own phone. But there is more to VR than Google Cardboard on your living room couch. The Six Flags theme park in America has recently incorporated VR into some of their thrill rides. Fly and fall above the city with Superman or play a cool space defending game while experiencing the movements of your spacecraft, it’s all made possible! If this is what we can do now, while VR is still in its beginning years, then just imagine what the future holds!

From film festivals to

theme parks, you’re all covered on the latest developments again!

LETHAL MOVIES THE CROW Towards the end of this cult movie, Brandon Lee - Bruce Lee’s son and star of the feature, had a scene, where he had to get shot with a prop gun. The gun was supposed to be filled with

gunpowder only, but for some reason contained a fatal blank cartridge as well. The shot hit Lee in the stomach, and caused his instant death, which was the culmination of the numerous

mysterious mishaps to happen on this movie set, which included two carpenters, a worker and a stuntman.

LORD OF THE RINGS While performing his pop culture favourite role as Aragorn in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Viggo Mortensen was referred to as ‘the walking wounded’ by the

film’s director. He performed all of his own stunts and frequently suffered injury while doing so; he even knocked out one of his teeth during one scene. The

tooth was repaired during the crew’s lunch break and Viggo promptly returned to work afterwards. Talk about a pure badass!

THE EXPENDABLES If we had to describe The Expendables in one sentence, it would have to be - “I heard you like action. So I put action in your action so you can action while you action.” Among all the dangerous stunts, one

particularly stands out - a scene in which Jason Statham drives a three-ton truck, the brakes of which broke and was catapulted into the Black Sea. Luckily, Statham, an Olympicquality diver, managed to quickly

escape, despite wearing heavy boots and gun belts. When asked about his injuries, he joked off by saying “I snapped a shoelace in the very first scene.” Now this is every woman’s dream man.

HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 1 When producing the first part of the final Harry Potter movies in 2009, Daniel Radcliffe’s stunt double, David Holmes, got injured. While he was doing a

flying stunt for the movie Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, which was produced in 2009, he was thrown against a wall. As a result, his neck got

fractured. From this moment on David is paralyzed from his neck down with limited mobility in his arms and hands. He was just 25 years old when this happened!

NOW YOU SEE ME If you have seen the movie Now You See Me you probably have seen the water chamber escape scene. It seems like the character actually dies in this scene, because the water turns completely red after the piranha s get in the

tank. However, she turns up in the audience and everyone is relieved. Unfortunately, the trick almost became reality. The actress Isla Fisher’s shackles became entangled, which caused that she was stuck in the water tank. Because this scene

involved her banging on the glass and ‘struggling’ no one on the set realized she was actually in danger. Fisher was under water for nearly three minutes! We don’t think a lot of people can manage this in heavy panic.

Internship seems far away for quite some time. But at a certain point, it comes surprisingly fast. In your third year placement, you chose for the peaceful Valencia, Spain. How come? Well, I was already thinking of going abroad on my previous school! But back then I just didn’t. I really wanted to learn Spanish, but I was not sure how and where. Then I just literally Googled ‘internship Spain’, which gave me the result of a mediation company called Work & Enjoy. This was solely located in Valencia. I had no clue, really, so I started acquiring more information about the company. Sounds fun! Could you tell more about the follow-up of that process? Work & Enjoy sells the service of arranging work and living possibilities mainly within Valencia. I had to pay around €450, after which Work & Enjoy sought for the most suitable options in accordance to my preferences. After the boss saw my resume, I was asked if I would like to do my internship at Work & Enjoy. And I happily accepted that opportunity! Did he immediately provide you with a living space? Yes. My apartment was quickly arranged, which was included in the mediation costs. However, because I was about to do my internship at Work & Enjoy, I luckily didn’t have to pay these costs.

37 Did you live closeby, or was it ‘oh, my...’ I lived in between Ciutat de les Arts, the city of science and art, and El Carmen, the old city. Using the city bikes, my internship only took me 5 minutes, whereas the city centre took 5 additional minutes. The nice weather enabled me and other interns to enjoy tasty tapas, having drinks and going to the beach. Super chill! What were your main activities? Would you consider to perform these in your future job? My tasks were mainly related to online marketing, that is, optimizing the overall website with SEO, in order to give the company a higher level of accessibility via Google. Content also got implemented into these tasks, which I deeply like. Although I’m now specializing in Content in my fourth year, I acknowledge that Content and Marketing go hand-in-hand very closely. I would definitely like to perform in this setting in my future job. How do you feel about the Spanish culture compared to what you’re used to? I’m more of a laid back person rather than someone with a very tight planning, so that felt natural in Spain. But your rhythm certainly changes. Office hours are from 9 till 2, followed by a siesta until 4.30, and continuous working hours from 4.30 till 7. Having dinner is usually at 9, so your usual habits will shift, which takes time to get used to. Furthermore, the Spanish people are very sweet and open, and when you try to speak Spanish you will notice that they are really willing to help you. Let’s throw back. How do you feel about your experiences? I was highly anxious for going in the first place. My dad drove me to Spain, and halfway through I started crying and doubting my decision. But when you’re actually there, you will get to know a lot of amazing people from different nationalities. In addition, I feel that the personal development you’re going through is the most important; the adventures you explore are everything! I would highly recommend it to everybody, and of course, Valencia is the greatest city in the world. Do you have any advice for people who want to an internship abroad? Don’t only think about a country you would like to explore, but keep in mind all the pros and cons it offers. Doublecheck the currency and the budget you have. Arrange your Visa and all your papers IN TIME. Don’t underestimate these points, because it can be very stressful. Lastly, decide on an internship that you really feel confident about, which also contributes to your preferences. Author: Nick Pijler Designer: Nick Pijler

38

Going abroad for your internship is something to be excited about. IGAD students have to keep their cool until the fourth year, because then the internship period starts. You decided to go all the way to Japan. Why is this THE destination for you? Jan: I wanted to go on internship as FAR as possible from the Netherlands. At my previous study, I interned in Germany, but this time I really wanted to try a completely different country and culture. Ted: I wanted to go somewhere far away. I have been interested in Japan for a longer time, because of the rich culture and its place in the games industry. That, combined with Japan being very different compared to the Netherlands, made it a very attractive place to go to. What happened after that? Jan: We started looking together on the internet for companies in Asia that seemed willing to take foreign interns (specifically companies with an English recruitment page). Through a process of elimination, we ended on an indiegame company in Japan called Q-Games. Ted: Since we had no idea on how to arrange everything that far away, we asked if the company could help us in any way with getting an apartment. They replied that Q-Games would take care of the living arrangements, together with paying for the plane tickets and giving us a per-day food allowance. So we were very lucky in that regard, but we did have to buy our own furniture, internet and all of that stuff, which meant a few trips back and forth to the recycle shop, haha.

39 Do you live closeby your internship? Ted: It is about 15-20 minutes by bike. What are your main activities in your internship? Yay or Nay for in your future job? Jan: Mainly graphic and gameplay programming. I quite enjoyed the graphics part, the gameplay a bit less. Additionally, we get to work with colleagues from both Japan and other countries. Q-Games is a very international company. Definitely something for the near future. Ted: Designing and programming gameplay. I worked and helped to release Dead Hungry, a Virtual Reality game. When I joined the project, the gameplay was almost finished, but it lacked content. I helped creating systems and tools that allowed for an easy time to create more content - in the very limited time that we had. I also did most of the menu work. It was also my first time working with VR, which was a very nice challenge! I definitely want to continue with that in the future. It is hard to say if I want to do it for the rest of my life though. Sounds surprising already! How do you feel about the Japanese culture? Ted: The culture is very nice. The Japanese are very polite and respectful; they bow to people and take their shoes off in doors (even in certain restaurants). Kyoto is very clean as well. Compared to the Netherlands I think I prefer this more, but sometimes I miss the directness. Jan: Absolutely, Japanese people are very respectful and polite. There is a lot less vandalism and theft compared to big cities in the Netherlands. Japanese work culture is a lot heavier. Luckily our company is alright, with 8 hours of work per day. Let’s throw back for a moment. How do you feel about your overall experiences? Ted: Mostly, it felt very good to me. Sometimes I had to cancel plans in order to meet deadlines, but that’s part of the industry which, although stressful, is very good to have experienced. Jan: My workflow was a bit different at the start. I worked some overtime to make sure my project would have a prototype quickly. Currently I have most tasks done, and I can relax and go home at 7. Do you have any tips for people who would like to go abroad? Ted: Just go for it. Just make sure that you are financially secure - in case something happens. And, if possible, going together with someone can make the journey a lot less scary. Jan: Yeah, we applied together, and luckily the company wanted two interns. But they pretty much said the same thing; ‘It will be less scary for them if they have someone to talk with.’ Once you’re here, you’ll find there’s nothing to be afraid of, and that everyone here is really nice to you!

SPECIALIzATION

40

Okay. You’ve had two years of Production, Content and Marketing courses… Now it’s the time to decide. What specialization will it be for you? Luckily, quite a few students have faced the same situation and are ready to explain to you how they made their decision. Do you feel that weight lifting off your shoulders? We sure do.

production

41 Kay Lemmens I basically picked Production because of my internship, it was pretty interesting! I first wanted to do marketing, but because of the internship I switched to Production – good choice! At the moment we are building an app and I like that we have the opportunity to create our own content for the app. The tricky thing is to actually build the app, it demands a lot of hard work, but it’s totally worth it. I don’t really know what I want to do next… but I’m sure that I’ll figure it out!

We hope that these stories haven’t made it the choice even more difficult for you – since they all sound exciting! Listen to your inner media and entertainment voice inside of you and make that decision. Remember, the Brewers will always be proud of you no matter what! Even though we are a bit biased and hope that you will pick content… No pressure though.

content

42 Maegan Hofmeester: I have always liked writing and creating new stories. Out of all the courses IMEM offers in the first 2 years, I enjoyed the content courses the most. I did some research about which specialization offers which courses, and the content courses sounded the most fun. We are currently working on a transmedia story world in which we have to create three different products for three different digital platforms. I really like this course, because you can let your creativity and imagination run free. There are no rules for what you can and can’t do. Next to that, my group and I created an exciting story world in which we get to write stories, which I think is awesome!

‘You can let your creativity and imagination run free. There are no rules for what you can and can’t do.’

marketing

43

Daniel Lawler: I am currently a second year fast track student studying International Media and Entertainment Management at the NHTV since 2015. After completing my internship in the beginning half of the year at the marketing department for a private television channel, I really got inspired by the work as I was greatly engaged in the tasks and work and was so warmly welcomed by the other employees. Prior to the internship I was only partly interested in Marketing, yet the internship really helped me conclude my decision as working for six months in this department really spiked my interest and showed me all the interesting work and further directions in which one can continue with in marketing. I greatly advise for indecisive students to choose an internship that matches your most appealing choice for the specialization. Lastly, I still wish you all still a wonderful and successful year!

Dream Jobs Author: Iva Gagarova Designer: Ralitsa Dodova

We are pretty sure that everyone has a job of his/her dreams, a job which is not going to be felt like an actual job because it will bring more pleasure than stress and on the top of that, you will get paid for it. Here are some of the jobs we are offering and we sure you are going to get obsessed with at least one of them.

BAKER It is nothing more pleasant and enjoyable than preparing pastries, cakes, macaroons and pancakes all day. Trying millions of recipes, sharing them with your customers and at the end eating what is left, this is the real pleasure.

45

CHOCOLATIER

This is even better than the baker. Can you imagine spending between eight and twelve hours per day trying numerous amount of flavors, textures and combinations of one of the most famous aphrodisiacs in the world? There is only one thing which you must have, really strong temptation for not trying everything multiple times because your body will suffer ;).

DOG DAY - CARE OWNER Is there a person on Earth who doesn’t love dogs? I doubt about it. This is the cutest job you can ever have. You will spend days of playing with, cuddling, feeding and showering the sweetest animal creatures. Also, if you have a good experience with doing that and the right approach for taking care of dogs, you can receive a very good amount of money, around 20-30 euros per hour.

WEDDING PLANNER One of the most stressful but even ten times more enjoyable jobs. If you are interested in doing that you must have an eye for even single small detail, an eye for a classical decorations, accessories and so on, but as well as for more extravagant ones, depends on your clients. Also, you have to be very patient and always helpful and ready to provide a new ideas, since most of the times the wedding couples are changing their minds in the preparation process.

EXCHANGES Author: Rachel Sommers Designer: Sten Mols

Pieter Boerboom – Odense, Denmark

47 Pieter is a 4th year IMEM student and is 23 years old. He is currently doing his internship and is working as a freelance filmmaker. For Pieter, going on exchange is all about new experiences. “It seemed like a lot of fun to go to a new country and just be in a different environment with people from all over the world.” So, how did he end up in Odense? “Honestly, I just randomly applied to a couple of European exchange destinations. The Erasmus experience is not that much about the location, but more about the new environment and the people you meet.”

Living the Danish Student Life Pieter studied the course Digital Concept at Erhvervsakademiet Lillebælt– kudos to anyone that can pronounce it! He noticed that the education was more group focussed: they would study a subject together with classmates and afterwards there was a small exercise to apply the knowledge.”Instead of just listening and forgetting everything, you had a chance to immediately apply the theory, which is really useful.”

International Experience Pieter’s room was arranged via his school. “I was staying on a student campus which was sort of like a Center Parcs with almost only international students.” Besides this, he had to contact the municipality for his health insurance and official registration. But of course, Pieter did not only study in Odense. “There were a couple of clubs and bars, but they are relatively expensive. We did have a lot of fun at house parties and the campus bar. “ Pieter and his friends also went on a road trip through Denmark and Sweden. “It is just a great experience to go to a completely new environment and discover everything.”

Just Go! As advice to you guys, Pieter said “Dont worry too much and just do it. Especially in Europe, there is not that much which can go wrong and it is a great experience to meet new people and just gain a lot of life experience. You will not regret it.”.

48

Rosemarie Seoul, Korea

van der

Laan –

49 Rosemarie is a 23 year - old fast-track student, who is currently in her last year of IMEM. In 2016, she left off to Korea to study at Hanyang University for half a year. According to Rosemarie, the main advantages of going on exchange include that it looks good on your CV and that its a great opportunity to experience a new culture and meet new people. “Korea was my first choice, but I didnt really mind where to go as long as it was far away and completely different from the Netherlands.”

No Books! Rosemarie experienced quite some differences between the NHTV and Hanyang University. Apparently, the level of the NHTV is quite high compared to Hanyang University. Additionally, she mentioned that they did not use any books or assignments while she was in Seoul. “They also really enjoyed foreign students, so we always got a special treatment.”

Living and Partying in Seoul Before Rosemarie moved to Seoul, she had to arrange many things such as her visa, several vaccines and a place to live. It might be handy to know that there is an organization, URSeoul, which has rooms for exchange students. Speaking of which, these students also enjoy the energetic night life of Seoul! “There are so many exchange students in Korea, which makes it very easy to get in contact and to gain many friends and with this, I could experience how it is to party in so many different cultures.”

Valuable Advice “Dont plan or think too much ahead. Just let it sink in and try to adapt as much as you can. Really enjoy other cultures!” As Rosemarie and Pieter both emphasized, going on exchange is mostly about meeting people and exploring new cultures. Hopefully, their stories made you realize that it can be a good thing to step out of your comfort zone and try something new. When was the last time that you did something for the first time? Exactly. So, start looking for that one perfect exchange destination!

NO!

That’s not what I had in mind We all have had situations in our head about how we thought they were going to happen, while they always turned out to be different. Here we will give you some examples, which you may highly likely recognize.

Do you also say to yourself “When I come home from school, I’m going to be very productive”? But we all know what actually happens when we come home.

You can always dream of course, but keep in mind that it can look like this.

Sleepovers. We all thought about having a pillow fight with our best friend and doing make-overs. But actually…

Lisanne Middag Let’s get to know her! Author: Naomi Melchers Designer: Lotte Brink

WHY DID YOU PICK IMEM AT THE NHTV? When I was in the third class of the HAVO, I was already thinking about what to do after graduating high school. I always thought media was interesting, so I decided to contact the NCRV (Television) to ask them if it would be possible to do some kind of a short internship. They invited me to assist them on a Saturday during the production of the BZTshow. I had to work from early in the morning till the end of the day, so I had the chance to really experience all phases of the process of making live television. I really liked working there and from that moment on I was sure I wanted to work in the field of Television. First I didn’t want to apply for the IMEM program at the NHTV because I had to communicate in English. I had a 4 for English in high school, so it wasn’t easy for me. But after visiting several other schools that offered this program, I felt the NHTV was the right school for me. I applied for the study, and had a backup plan in case I wouldn’t be accepted. But luckily I got accepted!

WHAT ARE SOME (OR ONE) OF YOUR FAVORITE MEMORIES WHILE STUDYING AT THE NHTV? The trip to Arizona. I was only 18 years old when we went. I had no clue of what the plans were, and I had never flown before so I was pretty scared for the longs flights. I had the best weeks of my study, met many new people even from the NHTV because groups were made without paying attention to the class that you were in in the Netherlands. Next to that I really miss the good times in Breda. When I was 18 or 19 years old I moved to Breda and had a really good student time together with my classmates. I still see my friends from the NHTV and we often look back on these great times.

54

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON? At the moment I still work as freelancer within the music industry. I started in 2011 and built it up quite slowly. I believe that it was in 2013 that I was able to quit my side jobs, and that I was working as a freelancer for 100%. The last few years I was mainly active as a tour manager and artist manager within the music industry, and as a marketing manager for several Dutch brands. Since 2013 I’ve been working as the tour manager for Matt Simons (USA) and get to travel all around the world. Next to that I’m the manager of Chris Ayer (USA), assistant manager of Haevn (NL) and I am teaching at the Herman Brood Academie in Utrecht.

We hope that we informed you enough about her, what she has done and what she is doing right now. Feel inspired!

INTERVIEW WITH A LECTURER

Paul Buchanan is, besides slightly incomprehensible due to his accent to some, described as a “New Media Artist”. His ADE page says that he’s created artwork for Broadway, is signed to a record label and has art shown in exhibitions in Scotland. But who’s the mysterious man behind the accent?

Written by Laura Hermans Designed by Lisa Kunz

BUCHANAN Portrait of Paul Buchanan image by Alastair Cooke.

57 “Well, I actually was teacher before”, Paul starts. He’s taught vulnerable children, children with a learning disability and kids who had trouble in school or with the law. He did this when he had a job as Glasgow’s art development officer, and helped these kids by means of art: bringing friends who played in bands to schools to tell them how music helped them and how to play their songs,

a project that became known as “Generation X”.

Paul still makes art, so what inspires/ motivates him?

The first thing he mentions is his studio in Utrecht, where he just has the space to do what he wants, experiment, and to get downright messy. “It’s all about

having the time and space to reflect, and find out what you want. In art you get to create your own goal and no one gets to tell you what is right or wrong.”

What’s one piece of advice you’d give our readers?

“I don’t want to be cliché but just believe in yourself. If you have a talent or a passion, really pursue

it. Just do what you’re good at and the rest will work itself out. Just stay active and do things.”

From This Place Installation / Sculpture Sarajevo 2014

If we look at Buchanan’s ADE page, it sums up art projects mostly, what has drawn him to teaching?

“It’s just all about passing on experience”, he says, “I’m not any better than anyone else in here. I just really like seeing that I can make a difference. Here not so much with the curriculum but more in the way of: ‘oh you like this, maybe this internship here will suit you.”

Now you know a bit more about the man in the Maclab. He’s about way more than Bootstrap and Photoshop, and has a great network of people with which he has done amazing projects. Maybe remember him next time you think about your internship, as he might be able to make a difference for you, too. For those interested, a documentary about Generation X is available on YouTube, just look for: Generation X-The Making Of... Part 1/Part 2.

BEST DUTCH

1

UNKNOWN SPOTS We all know about the Dam in Amsterdam, the Dom in Utrecht (the big church) and the Euromast in Rotterdam. But it might be fun to discover

other places, right? We promise you that it will provide pretty pictures for your social media account (or to send to your parents, no denial possible)!

CLINGENDAEL PARK, THE HAGUE

Okay, it might be a bit difficult to pronounce this

name – so you may want to practice a couple of times before you ask directions to this beautiful park. When you walk around, it feels like you got

sent back in time in a Jane Austen novel. That makes sense, the park has been designed to resemble an English landscape style. But the Dutch didnt stop at the land of scones and tea, no, no. They also

used Japanese elements, such as a traditional red bridge. If you want to impress, lets say your date, take her or him to this park and swoop them of their feet with your knowledge of the English-Japaneselandscape-style-park-in-The-Hague.

May

the

Dutch, Japanese and English force be with you!

FRISIAN ISLANDS

Another place where you can relax, unwind and forget everything for

a short while. It has been added to the Unesco World Heritage list in

2009. The islands exist out of Texel, Vlieland, Terschelling, Ameland and Schiermonnikoog. It is especially popular in the summer, the islands are infamous for the German tourists. One of the most popular activities is wadlopen– mudflat walking. It basically means that you walk nearby

the sea while wearing Wellington boots. So, raid your closet and try to find those stylish boots and prepare yourself for a traditional Dutch walk!

60

KATENDRECHT, ROTTERDAM

3

Yes. We know. Technically its a district of Rotterdam – but it can totally

stand on its own. Lets sum up the history of Katendrecht, it has been

described as ‘Chinatown’ and ‘The Red-Light District’ of Rotterdam which attracted lonely sailors. During the past years, Katendrecht has become

a Walhalla for yuppies and the Rotterdammers who want to escape the

tourists who gaze in awe at the cube houses. Fun fact: fan of the Markthal? Visit the Fenixloods – it’s exactly the same, except for the tourists and the ridiculous prices. Tip of the author: go to De Zeeuwse Meisjes and

treat yourself to a triple chocolate brownie. Come on, you deserve it.

We hope that we have introduced you to some exciting and new places. The Netherlands is more than Amsterdam, Utrecht and Breda. Go on, explore and become the person who knows new and exciting spots!
