Georgia Blacknell, Wedding & Sales Co-ordinator at Chewton Glen, was named Young Person in Business at the New Forest Brilliance in Business Awards 2024, while Executive Director Andrew Stembridge has been named as a finalist for Hotelier of the Year at the 2025 Hotel Magazine Awards. Additionally, Cliveden House and Spa’s food and beverage team won Team of the Year at the Boutique Hotelier Awards.

Chewton Glen has also been featured in the Tatler Travel Guide 2025 as “best for kids” among the world’s top 101 hotels - especially noted for the beautiful New Forest setting, exceptional food and drink, the tranquil spa, and the wealth of activities available to guests. Chewton Glen was also highlighted in Condé Nast Traveller’s Gold List as a ‘Most Wanted’ destination, with special mention to the luxurious Treehouses offering an intimate and cosy retreat for the start of the year.

The Lygon Arms was named ‘Best Hotel in the Cotswolds’ at The Cotswolds Awards 2024, which was voted for by the public and stands as a true testimony to the wonderfully authentic Cotswolds experience offered. Meanwhile in Berkshire, Cliveden House earned a spot in Cosmopolitan’s 2024 Hot Hotel Awards as one of 10 next-level properties worldwide, with recognition given for its iconic appeal, breathtaking aesthetics and renowned hospitality. Finally, the Travel + Leisure Co. World’s Best Awards are celebrating their 30th year in 2025, and once again The Mayfair Townhouse is in the running, nominated for its exceptional guest experiences and coveted status as a top destination.

Dear Friends,

There’s something magical about this time of year—the days get longer, the air a little softer, and that first hint of spring reminds us that brighter days are just around the corner. With the new season comes fresh energy, and we have so much to share.

First, we’re thrilled to have launched Palm House in Florida, our very first venture across the Atlantic. Meanwhile, in Venice, Hotel Excelsior is reopening its doors, ready for another sun-drenched season on the water. Closer to home, Chewton Glen is undergoing a beautiful refresh, blending timeless charm with contemporary luxury. And for those in need of a reset, our rural spas are the perfect sanctuary to welcome in the new season with a dose of wellness and calm.

We’re also raising a glass to something special—our very own Iconic Gin. Whether sipped in a garden bathed in spring sunshine or in a candlelit bar in the city, we hope it becomes a favourite for long, leisurely evenings.

As always, thank you for being part of our journey.

Best wishes

THE JAMES MARTIN KITCHEN TAKEOVER: FROM THE COTSWOLDS TO THE NEW FOREST

James Martin proved popular in the Cotswolds on 18th November for another glorious lunch at The Lygon Arms, and then made himself at home in The Kitchen at Chewton Glen, for an exclusive takeover on Tuesday 26th November, both proving to be unforgettable events showcasing exceptional food and entertaining company.

Arrival drinks featured James’ signature gin and his own sparkling wine. At The Kitchen, guests enjoyed front-row seats as the renowned chef and his team prepared a delicious five-course dinner in the open kitchen. Guests at both events were treated to mouthwatering dishes, each of which were impeccably paired with one of James’ award-winning wines. James regaled with a lively Q&A session between courses, offering intriguing insights into his life and work, and, of course, plenty of selfie opportunities!

CLIVEDEN LITERARY FESTIVAL

On the 21st to the 22nd September, Cliveden House was home to its seventh Literary Festival. This year’s exemplary line-up included Salman Rushdie, who took centre stage on Saturday, talking to Ian McEwan about his storied and courageous literary career, and ex-MI6 chief Alex Younger and Niall Ferguson investigated global threats to the West ranging from China and Russia, to Islamic extremism. In addition, eminent historians William Dalrymple and Simon Sebag Montefiore discussed the Mughal and Romanov dynasties. Investigating the most pressing and interesting questions across culture, politics and history, in the most beautiful of settings, the Festival continues to be both challenging, stimulating and of course, glamourous.

A NEW CH PTER

Chewton Glen, the iconic five-star country house, is known for leading the pack when it comes to exceptional hospitality and is now about to undergo an exciting transformation.

This renowned luxury retreat is set to unveil a stunning refurbishment of its dining, bar, and lounge areas, following the refurbishment of their main event space, The Lake Suite, last year.

The guiding pillars of the new design celebrate the property’s strong English heritage, drawing inspiration from the British Isles and forging a connection between the indoors and the surrounding countryside.

Chewton Glen’s enviable location near the beach and the New Forest is reflected in a palette inspired by natural hues and textures, seamlessly weaving these elements into the design which features sumptuous textures, bespoke furnishings, and carefully curated artwork

As these new spaces are revealed, they’ll mark the beginning of an exciting chapter in Chewton Glen’s story. The refurbishment will reaffirm the hotel’s position as a trailblazer in luxury hospitality, creating a setting where tradition and innovation meet, and ensuring the hotel continues to provide an unparalleled guest experience for countless future memories.

With Mediterranean-inspired architecture and lavish vaulted ceilings adorned with rich colours and bathed in natural light, Palm House provides a sumptuous retreat for elite travellers who share an affinity for refinement

There is a particular magic that one feels when stepping into the lobby, a sensation that the world has momentarily stopped to catch its breath. The Palm Bar beckons, where guests and locals alike find themselves caught in the current of an unspoken camaraderie. The bartenders, their white jackets crisp and immaculate, craft classic cocktails with an effortless precision.

Staying here is like being wrapped in a gentle blanket of graceful hospitality. The generous guest rooms are bathed in a soft, sophisticated palette reminiscent of the beach and ocean – sea greens, sandy beiges, and subtle gold accents, whilst floor-to-ceiling windows and private balconies invite the tropical breeze in. Plush bedding, marble-clad bathrooms, and hand-selected art enhance the already beautiful sanctuary, while cutting-edge amenities ensure that every need is met with ease.

Then, there are the suites. The two-story Presidential Suite is the epitome of refined living, bestowed with two balconies (one covered and one ceremonial) with views across the serene pool deck and stretching from the bedroom to the spacious living and dining areas. Inside, sea green, gold, and linen colours evoke the serenity of the ocean. The second-floor bedroom, with its massive 9x9 Alaskan King bed, overlooks the living space below, creating a sense of both grandeur and privacy.

With a commanding view of the immaculate grounds and the lush pool deck sits Palm Beach’s best-kept secret, the Palm House Dining Room. With the background lull of the Atlantic, it’s where thinkers and tastemakers come to savour exquisite food - a decadent fusion of traditional Japanese and Peruvian flavours, coupled with an unrivalled service and the utmost discretion.

At the heart of Palm House, the Sunset Pool Deck is a serene Mediterranean-inspired retreat. Lush greenery wraps around the sparkling pool, offering a tranquil oasis where guests bask in the warmth of the sun. Excelsior HOTEL

As the world wakes from a winter slumber, behind the elegant Moorish facade of the Hotel Excelsior Venice Lido Resort, the team are preparing to open for the summer season in April. Rich in history, brimming with Venetian glamour, a private beach with extensive golden sands, and positioned just 15-minutes away from Piazza San Marco, there’s nothing else like it in Venice.

If architecture is your thing, this year’s Venice Biennale is the 19th International Architecture Exhibition, taking place from Saturday 10 May to Sunday 23 November 2025. Established in 1895, La Biennale di Venezia is acknowledged today as one of the most prestigious cultural institutions. It stands at the forefront of research and promotion of new contemporary art trends, organising multiple events across all expressions of the arts.

This year’s Architecture Exhibition will be curated by the architect and engineer Carlo Ratti, who has commented: “To face a burning world, architecture must harness all the intelligence around us. I am honored and humbled to have the opportunity to curate the Biennale Architettura 2025.”

If after exploring you need to refresh, head to the infamous Harry’s Bar. Opened by Guiseppe Cipriani in 1931, through the years, it’s upheld a reputation of being the place where artists, writers, painters, aristocrats, and kings and queens would meet. Very much the place to see and to be seen, the cosy, club-like walls have welcomed names such as Ernest Hemingway, Guglielmo Marconi, Charlie Chaplin, Alfred Hitchcock, Maria Callas, Orson Welles, Peggy Guggenheim, George Clooney and Joe DiMaggio, to name but a few.

As the world wakes from a winter slumber, behind the elegant Moorish façade of the Hotel Excelsior Venice Lido Resort, the team are preparing to open for the summer season in April.

Cipriani founded Harry’s Bar with the help of a rich young American called Harry Pickering, who met Cipriani at the Hotel Europa, where he worked as a bartender. One day, Pickering stopped coming to the bar, and Cipriani asked him why. On hearing that Pickering’s family had cut him off, Cipriani lent him 10,000 lire. Two years later, Pickering sought out Cipriani, not only paying him back, but gifting him an extra 40,000 lire, proposing that he opened a bar of his own - thus Harry’s Bar was born.

Cipriani, an exceptionally gifted barman and business owner, went on to invent the Bellini cocktail, as well as the raw beef dish, carpaccio. Harry’s Bar is also infamous for its incredibly dry martinis (apparently with the ratio of 10 parts gin to 1 part vermouth).

The Venice Film Festival is the glittering global jewel in the crown of Film Festivals, showcasing the latest films and documentaries from countries all over the world, and bringing the cream of the industry to the beautiful city.

Taking place at the end of August, it’s the perfect excuse to dress up and make the best of the balmy warm days at the close of summer. Take the opportunity to enjoy the Festival from a gondola, and for you and your guests to enjoy the pinnacle of the film calendar, rubbing shoulders with the world’s most distinguished A-list celebrities in the floating city. Afterwards, retreat for some much-needed downtime on the property’s private beach on a luxurious cabana, or by the glittering pool.

WHEN GIN BECOMES ICONIC

We take pride in the fact that each of our properties are unique in their own right. However, they all have something in common – their own special heritage and particular place in history. It’s not something you can generally bottle - except now, we have.

Introducing the Iconic handcrafted London Dry Gin that takes you on a sensory journey through an eclectic blend of botanicals, inspired by the beautiful and unique characteristics of our hotels, each as distinctly individual as our guests. Delight in notes of juniper, lavender, orange peel, lemon and coriander, complimented by rose petals, elderflower and wild gorse.

Hawkridge Distillers have a proud heritage of creating bespoke spirits for discerning clients, so skillfully guided us through their unique journey of product development. Flavour profiling was key to truly capture the essence of the brand, taking inspiration from the settings of our houses, such as the fragrant blooms of Chewton Glen’s roses and the gorgeous lavender borders of the Parterre at Cliveden House. Wild gorse, angelica root, meadowsweet and nettle all evoke the wild surrounds of The New Forest and The Cotswolds countryside, whilst juniper harks to the time-honoured tradition and heritage of the London gins found in Mayfair and Chelsea. Walk

THIS WAY

After hibernating through winter, it’s more important than ever to get out into the fresh air for those all-important doses of vitamin D and vitamin G. Here’s our pick of some favourite routes, especially if you have smaller family members in tow or those of the canine persuasion…

CLIVEDEN HOUSE

Sprawling out beyond our five-star country estate lies 376 acres of magnificent Grade I listed formal gardens and woodlands. A stay at Cliveden offers an idyllically perfect combination of refined relaxation and nature, and thanks to the National Trust’s curatorship, a fabulous selection of walking routes. Opt for the family-friendly blue route, with an all-natural play trail (perfect for ages 6+), encouraging children to immerse themselves in nature, exploring the woods and feeding imaginations, as well as burning off energy. They’ll discover a climbing net inspired by Charlotte’s Web, a ‘Wind in the Willows’ style boat; a turreted house with a slide, based on the famous ‘Magic Tree House’ stories; and giant mini-beasts to spot and name, as well as actual ones. Seek out Clive’s Den, a fabulous natural den to spark the imagination and some story-telling - the tree trunk tables are perfect for a spring picnic. Or, head off the beaten track and admire the majestic Thames on the Gold Walking Trail. You will pass the fairytale Spring Cottage, where you can also stay, providing the perfect family retreat with your own private garden and spectacular views onto the river.

THE MAYFAIR TOWNHOUSE

A mere stone’s throw from The Mayfair Townhouse is St James’s Park, one of the eight illustrious Royal Parks. Immerse yourself in nature as you stroll around the extensive 57 acres, taking in the impressive views of the lake and fountain, not forgetting the pelicans, who have inhabited St James’ Park for almost 400 years (originally a gift from the Russian Ambassador to King Charles II). The park is also perfect for sightseeing as it borders famous buildings such as Buckingham Palace, Clarence House and Whitehall, and contains two London landmarks within it: The Mall and Horse Guards Parade, the ceremonial parade ground in St James’s Park, the iconic setting of Trooping the Colour.

The Mayfair Townhouse is great for families, and four-legged friends too, as snuggly dog amenities are available.

THE LYGON ARMS

The Lygon Arms, set in beautiful Broadway, is the perfect place to relax with the family and your pup, sitting around roaring fires, and catching up over drinks. But with the wonder and sheer breath-taking beauty of the Cotswolds on your doorstep, it’s also the perfect place to step out into the fresh air and make the most of the location.

For a few weeks between mid-March and mid-May the roadsides along the 50-mile AA signposted Blossom Trail are ablaze with colour, displaying a beautiful mixture of pear, cherry and apple blossom, along with hawthorn decorating the hedgerows, too.

The spring Blossom Trail incorporates many of the horticultural highlights the area has to offer throughout the rest of the year – award-winning parks, nurseries, and farm shops selling outstanding local produce and home-cooked delicacies. From April to June this will also include the famous Vale of Evesham Asparagus – whose prestige has gained it PGI European Protected Food named status.

Kids stay and dine free at The Lygon Arms during the school holidays, and dogs are welcomed with open arms.

CADOGAN GARDENS | THE CHELSEA TOWNHOUSE

One of Chelsea’s best kept secrets is the Chelsea Physic Garden, the oldest botanic garden in London, and the second oldest in the country (The Oxford Botanic Garden being the first). Founded in 1673, it’s historically one of the most important centres of botany in the world, and home to a living collection of around 5,000 different edible, medicinal and historical plants. Stroll along the Tropical Corridor admiring the cocoa and vanilla plants, and through the glasshouses that are over 100-years-old. Or take the Historical Walk which showcases the pioneers of horticulture and the plants that have been named in their honour. The Garden’s microclimate also offers the perfect conditions for the Atlantic Islands Border to thrive (featuring rare and endangered species from Crete, the Atlantic Islands, Madeira and the Canary Islands).

A National Park and royal hunting playground since 1079, The New Forest has over 139,900 acres of picturesque forest to explore, making it one of the most idyllic places to walk in any season.

Wilverley Inclosure is a great place for families to walk and play. This mostly flat and circular route has some gentle inclines, along with plenty of wooded areas off the beaten track for den building – you’ll often come across rope swings too. The flat, open plain, adjacent to the woods is great for games, and perfect for kite flying on a breezy day.

Head to dog-friendly Exbury Gardens for a stroll around the beautifully manicured grounds, taking in the colours of the changing seasons. There are play areas for children, as well as a steam train, should little legs tire easily.

There are few things more precious than time with the family, and kids stay for free during school holidays at Chewton Glen

CHEWTON GLEN

HIDDEN STORIES beautifully revealed

While Cliveden is home to the Literary Festival in October, their sister property has its own links to fantastic storytelling in the Cotswolds.

The Lygon Arms, nestling in the centre of beautiful Broadway, is not just in the heart of the Cotswolds, but is also said to be positioned in the centre of J.R.R Tolkien’s mythical Middle-earth. Tolkien regularly visited the Cotswolds from his nearby home in the Vale of Evesham, and the memory of this landscape wove its way into the dramatic fictional scenery described throughout his epic tome, ‘The Lord of the Rings’. Tolkien’s aunt, residing in the Worcestershire village of Dormston, had a cottage named ‘Bag End’ – which as any Tolkien fan will tell you, is the beloved hobbit house of Bilbo Baggins, the protagonist from the prequel book, ‘The Hobbit’.

A ten-minute drive from Broadway will bring you to thriving market town, Moreton-in-Marsh, the inspiration for the fictional village, Bree. The traditional High Street is well worth a visit, lined with elegant 17th and 18th century buildings housing antique shops, galleries, tearooms and delis. Also on the High Street, you’ll find The Bell Inn (a traditional pub, home to live music at the weekends) and as the blue plaque on the wall proudly states, the setting for The Prancing Pony - the inn where Frodo Baggins, Sam, Pippin, and Merry, first meet Strider.

Closer to The Lygon Arms, the impressive local landmark, Broadway Tower, is better known in Tolkien’s Work as ‘Amon Hen’ and can be reached by a 45-minute stroll through beautiful countryside (or a ten-minute drive, if preferred). The building has had many incarnations throughout its lifetime, (including becoming a holiday home for the Pre-Raphaelite art movement, amongst others). There is now a museum within the walls, telling the story of the Tower, and offering an interactive tour too. Set at the second highest point in the Cotswolds, the tower overlooks 16 different counties from all directions, as far as Wales on a clear day. Easy to see where Tolkien got the inspiration for Amon Hen, home to the Seat of Seeing, which empowers the sitter the ability to see for hundreds of miles.

The Rollright Stones, an ancient site on the Oxfordshire and Warwickshire border, is said to be the location of the fictional ‘Barrow-Downs’. Located to the east of the Shire and the Old Forest, and southwest of the town of Bree. Resting places for the men of the north, including Dúnedain, until they were taken over by the evil spirits, Barrow-wights. A ten-minute drive will take you to another Tolkien landmark where Westfarthing, Southfarthing, and Eastfarthing met, ‘The Three Farthing Stone’; or actually, the Four Shire Stone, a unique 15 foot-high pillar marking the ancient boundary between the counties of Gloucestershire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and Worcestershire. Stay at The Lygon Arms and explore the beauty of Middle-earth. Add an extra night on us when you stay for three nights, or two extra nights when you stay for five.

AT THE LYGON ARMS AND EXPLORE THE BEAUTY OF MIDDLE-EARTH – ADD AN EXTRA NIGHT ON US WHEN YOU STAY FOR THREE NIGHTS, OR TWO EXTRA NIGHTS WHEN YOU STAY FOR FIVE.

TRAVEL

Recent years have seen some post-pandemic trends persisting, especially a desire to experience pristine natural environments in a sustainable way, an ongoing shift towards multigenerational travel and an interest in holistic wellness experiences. Although these are still at the forefront, there are some further travel trends that will be ones to watch for the coming year.

GENTLY ENJOYING THE SILENCE ...

Soft Travel, or gentle, inward experience is a concept best described as JOMO – the joy of missing out, which is seeing an increase in private, secluded vacations, with a focus on leisure and relaxation. This restorative, rejuvenating retreat from the greater world allows for an increase in mental wellbeing and to connect better with loved ones. According to a recent study, 62% of travellers say JOMO travel reduces stress and anxiety. The Treehouses at Chewton Glen, each secluded away from it all in a wooded valley, offer the ultimate escape. The concierge service is so private that any room service (as well as your daily breakfast hamper) can be delivered via a secret hatch, so there really is no need to make contact with the world outside unless you wish to. Equally, private dining can be arranged with the hotel should you decide to venture out but still maintain a low profile. Or retreat to Spring Cottage at Cliveden, set on a tranquil stretch of the River Thames, accompanied only by the lazy motion of the water and gentle comings and goings of the local wildlife.

‘SET-JETTING’ ISN’T GOING ANYWHERE, BUT YOU CAN...

For those that enjoy seeing the setting for their favourite films in person, set-jetting is a must. Bridget Jones fans can head to Snowshill in the Cotswolds, just a five-minute drive from The Lygon Arms, to visit the centre of this picturesque village to visit a local house which featured as the home of Bridget’s parents in the movies. Or head into London to visit various locations showcased in the film including Shad Thames where Bridget and Daniel have their first date, the Royal Courts of Justice, St Pancras railway station, and Tower Bridge.

Or, if you love all things Disney, then a trip to Cliveden House is a must – the beautifully ornate clock tower was featured in the film Cinderella, closing the heroine’s night at the ball. Cliveden’s magnificent Fountain of Love also made it into the film after its extravagant design caught the eye of the production team.

ART-VENTURE

Trips with a cultural slant are also trending. Condé Nast Traveler and Travel + Leisure note an increase in travellers focusing their trips around art exhibitions and cultural events. Enjoy a taste of Italy at The Hotel Excelsior Venice Lido for the Venice Biennale and Venice Film Festival, or head into London for the coveted London Fashion Week, where The Mayfair Townhouse is perfectly placed for the ultimate in people watching. Or stay at The Townhouse and take a trip to nearby Tate Britain which houses a significant collection of art from the UK, dating from 1500 to the present day. Over in Chelsea, 11 Cadogan Gardens enjoys a special partnership with Saatchi Gallery, offering guests exclusive access to shows and previews throughout the year.
