Thirteen tanneries, an artist and a fashion designer. A singular combination thoughtout to inspire. It is with the intention of widening our perception of leather that the Centre for the Brazilian Tanning Industry (CICB) presents you with this book. A book that does not hold the objective of dictating any trend. Instead, it wants to serve as a starting point for the integration between the technical excellence and the creative diversity of our country.

With Design na Pele, leather incorporates touches of fashion and art through the eyes of two genuinely Brazilian personalities: Ronaldo Fraga and HeloĂsa Crocco.

One of the most renowned Brazilian fashion designers, Ronaldo Fraga travelled across the country to discover that leather is the perfect canvas to translate the colours, textures and creative richness of this immense multicultural melting pot called Brazil.

“More than an economic driver, leather is a driver of cultural appropriation. In Southern Brazil, for instance, the abundance of the sycamore is magical. The wood is something ever present in the soul of the German immigrant. So what if we make a Brazilian texture?

“I had never let myself into the magic world of this industry of transformation. And the most fascinating thing is understanding leather as a live material. The more you live with it, the more you discover its versatility in terms of writings and applications. 25
But with one particularity: it brings with it the story of the local culture.
“The earth and the sky of Cândido Portinari. By creating a connection between his paintings and a tannery from São Paulo, I believe we can bring a human feel to the image people have of an industry that may seem arid at first glance.”

“What people expect from products made in Brazil is that they bring our personality. Like mimicking the industry with our popular art, with the work of artisan Espedito Seleiro. If you put that talent to establish a dialogue with local culture you’ll have a richer, truly original product.”

DESIGN NA PELE is an initiative promoted by CICB through the Brazilian Leather project, and in collaboration with Apex-Brasil. Its goal is to promote inovation in the leather sector through fashion and design, by allowing tanneries to develop exclusive collections under the eyes of renowned artists. In its first edition, Heloísa Crocco and Ronaldo Fraga were responsible for promoting a series of creative workshops in thirteen industries from different regions of Brazil. By instigating this dialog, Design na Pele foresees a new scenario, in which Brazil’s cultural repertoire is a source of inspiration for the creation of a leather with identity and aggregate value. A Brazilian leather.
81
Is a fashion designer. A graduate of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), who holds postgraduate degrees from New York’s Parsons The New School For Design and London’s Saint Martin’s School of Art, Ronaldo’s name and image are strongly associated with a design in constant dialogue with Brazilian culture, literature and sustainability. He has already created collections inspired by Nara Leão and Carlos Drummond de Andrade, participated in Madrid’s Ibero American Design Biennial, in an exhibition at the London’s Design Museum and has been graced with the Comenda da Ordem Cultural Brasileira.
Is one of the most important names regarding the combination of crafts and design. She graduated in Design from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), has already participated in exhibitions and biennials in Germany, France and Mexico, lectured at the University of Los Andes, in Colombia, and has murals in places such as the Hilton from Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. Since 1986, Heloísa has been dedicated to the Topomorfose project, where she explores the aesthetic potentialities of a typically Brazilian material: wood.
