Skills Canada - BC

Welcome To Our 23rd Competitions Welcome to the Tradex Centre and the 23rd annual Skills Canada BC Provincial Competition. I’m very honored to represent the Skills Canada BC Board of Directors and our office staff members who have been working diligently over the past year to organize and deliver this year’s Regional and Provincial competitions. Skills Canada BC brings youth, educators and industry together from every region of the Province to showcase skills and celebrate youth achievement in the Trades and Technology sectors - Olympic style! Leading up to the Provincial competition today Skills Canada BC along with our regional partners have hosted 13 regional competitions throughout the Province. Gold winners from those competitions including Middle School (grades 6 to 9) and Senior Secondary (grades 10 to 12) are here today representing their home towns and schools. On the post-secondary side, competitors have been selected by their College instructors. Gold winners from the Provincial competition today will advance and be invited to join Team BC at the National Skills Competition in Winnipeg Manitoba May 31 to June 3, 2017. Whether you are experiencing this event for the first time or have become a multi-year attendee, we encourage you to explore all of the skills contests, cheer on your favorite competitor, attend the awards ceremonies, talk with experts at the trades and technology career booths, and try out the many First Hand activities.

To all of the dedicated individuals and organizations that have donated their time, effort and resources for this 2017 event, we extend our extreme appreciation. None of what you will see today would have been possible without the continued support of community, industry, businesses, government, school districts and post-secondary institutions throughout BC and beyond. It takes well over 1,000 volunteers and over $ 1.5 million worth of in-kind donations to ensure that the tools, materials and judges are ready for event days. I would like to extend special thanks to Sylvia and George Peary who have been instrumental in leading the Team Peary group of volunteers who ensure that the Provincial competition held here at the Tradex Centre is a success each and every year! To all of the competitors... good luck today! This is your opportunity to show the world the skills you have learned and practiced with-in the trade or technology sector you have selected. We encourage you to do your best, work safely, learn from this event and especially, have fun! Whether you win a medal today or not potential employers will value the initiative, enthusiasm, determination and ability that you have displayed leading up to and during this event. The future is bright for you and you should be very proud of your accomplishments. To all of the mentors, coaches, employers, teachers/ instructors and parents who have dedicated their time and energy to help prepare the competitors... we salute you! Your dedication and support is very apparent. Thank you for helping to prepare tomorrow’s skilled workforce and leaders in our trades and technology sectors. On behalf of the Skills Canada BC Board of Directors and Staff, thank you for attending!

2017 Canadian Skills Competitions The National Skills Competition remains the only event of its kind in Canada. Every year, the event brings together over 500 young people from all provinces and territories to compete in over 50 trade and technology areas. The competition provides an opportunity for young Canadians learning a skilled trade or a technology to showcase their talent and expertise and to be tested against their peers from across the nation.

Students vie for the honour of being crowned the best in their chosen discipline. Eligible winners from the BC Skills Competition will compete as Team BC in two days of rigorous competition on June 1-2, 2017 in Winnipeg Manitoba. Skills Canada BC wishes Team BC the best of luck at the upcoming National Skills Competition!

WorldSkills Competition The WorldSkills Competition occurs every two years and is the biggest vocational education and skills excellence event in the world that truly reflects global industry. The Competitors represent the best of their peers and are selected from skills competitions in WorldSkills Member countries and regions. They demonstrate technical abilities both individually and collectively to execute specific tasks for which they study and/or perform in their workplace. One of the main legacies of the WorldSkills Competitions is to give visibility and importance to professional education, as one of the true tools of socioeconomic transformation.

The Competition also provides leaders in industry, government and education with the opportunity to exchange information and best practices regarding industry and professional education. New ideas and processes inspire school-aged youth to dedicate themselves to technical and technological careers and towards to a better future. Two competitors from BC (Andrew Christensen-Welding and Judd FosterElectronics) will be representing Canada at the 2017 WorldSkills Competition in Abu Dhabi this August.
