S yno p s i s When the rainy season begins Helena’s baby shall be born. Her adopted mother and brother collect food and wood in the forest, preparing for the weeks of rain that are approaching. The neighbours also start preparing: some dry their fish, other harvest their crops. And it’s in the midst of these ordinary actions that stories of pain and solitude suffered by everyone in the community emerge; especially the story about Helena, whose child is the fruit of a rape. The inhabitants rest from fishing and harvesting, and gather around Helena waiting silently for moment of birth. The rain begins. Life continues.

My biggest motivation to make this film is to say something about human tenacity; about our capacity to reemerge form the ashes. I have always been moved by the resignation and endurance from persons who were born in difficult environments – like in many isolated regions of Latin America – where adversities may come one after the other, and they just endure and fight, as if they were being forced to live. I also want to talk about other ways to see a birth – an event that is much stereotyped, where only the fortunate births fill the imaginary of the media and of the great society; forgetting about the other facets from many other unfortunate births, which in a country like Colombia may be a majority. This story’s birth is more related with the struggle and imbalance that life and nature are filled with; just as it was among death and rape, that our Latin American countries were born.
