Greetings to our fellow members and freshers, well done on the hardwork in previous years. On behalf of the Imperial College Public Awareness and Social Service Society(ICPASS), I would like to welcome you to the ICPASS family, where we look after together to embark on this coming year. I was once in your position where I was new to imperial and very curious and excited about the upcoming university life, so please allow me to share with you my experience and our visions and goals for the coming year!
ICPASS is a society run by a group of Hong Kong students since 2008, we aim to raise the public awareness(PA) of global affairs and organise social services(SS) collaborations with other London universities for members to participate and engage to give back to the community. On the other hand, our society has always been a home away from home, a place where diverse individuals come together to create a supportive and inclusive community.
Throughout the year there will be a series of activities hosted by us and also other collaboration with London Universities. We are dedicated to foster awareness of public affairs and nurturing a sense of social responsibility Collaborating closely with other HKPASS groups, our mission is to inspire students to commit to societal betterment throughout their university journey and beyond. We embrace diverse perspectives on global and local matters, environmental concerns and technological progress. Through a growthoriented approach, we encourage critical evaluation of these issues while promoting innovative solutions through lateral thinking and community service Partnering with charitable organisations in both Hong Kong and the UK, we offer our members the chance to immerse themselves in various social settings and meaningful volunteering experiences. Our flagship event, Famine24, conducted in partnership with World Vision, raises awareness and funds to alleviate food scarcity, while also fostering collaborations with other HKPASS societies for the greater common good. Alongside these endeavours, our society hosts mentorship programs, social gatherings, and events, creating lifelong connections and a sense of belonging ICPASS not only provides a unique avenue for growth and enjoyment but also the opportunity to discover a second family, wishing all an enriching university experience filled with joyous engagement in our activities.
As we embark on this new year together, let us remember that ICPASS is not just a society but a supportive family where each member's journey is valued and celebrated. Whether you are a seasoned member or a newcomer, our shared commitment to raising public awareness and contributing to society unites us in a meaningful purpose The friendships you'll forge, the experiences you'll gain, and the impact you'll make collectively define the essence of our society. With open hearts and minds, let's eagerly embrace the opportunities that lie ahead. Welcome to the ICPASS family, where we learn, grow, and give back as one cohesive force Here's to a year filled with inspiration, growth, and unforgettable moments.

SURVIVAL GUIDE
Tips on groceries, tranportation and dining
GROCERIES
Being independent is the key to study abroad London is notorious for its high living cost, so when it comes to groceries, it is important to keep track of your spendings and know where to get the best deals
When you want Asian groceries, a close store to go to is Essentials Convenience Store, which is next to Princes Gardens, it has loads of Asian groceries, from instant noodles and dumplings to VitaSoy and mochi. Another option is buying groceries in Chinatown supermarkets. Other than Essentials, most supermarkets have an adequate collection of basic Asian grocery. However, they may not sell some products that are considered niche in the UK (eg. most of them only have dark soy sauce and no light soy sauce.)
It is understandable that Imperial freshers always have a busy schedule. When you feel lazy, a good £3 - £6 meal deal, which comes with a main, a snack, and a drink, or ready meals are always a default choice. However, getting your own groceries and cooking your own meals is also a great option. Not only does it allow you to show off your culinary skills (or equip you with the skills), but it will also allow you to socialise with people from your kitchen; these people will likely be your best friends in your time in Imperial and potentially your roommates next year! If you are going for the cheapest and laziest cooked meal, a spaghetti Bolognese with garlic bread or a fried rice will be our recommendation.
TIPS
shops do not sell alcohol after 11 pm in London, so if you are holding a party or gathering, remember to (ask your friends to) prepare early!

day 1
ENDURE, IGNITE, SYNERGIZE, this was the theme for this year’s Famine 24. The 2-day event kicked off with an introduction from our guest speaker from World Vision UK giving us an update on the current global food crisis and their work.We also had the privilege of having The Mockingbird, a London-based a cappella group, to perform for us. Their beautiful singing resounded throughout the 2day event.
Is money more important than happiness and food? The participants had to ask themselves this question when playing Life Monopoly. Participants were allocated random amounts of Food, Happiness and Money. There were many booths representing different settings where the participants had to complete tasks in order to gain food, happiness or money but at the same time, they had to sacrifice what they already had. They could also donate food. Therefore, it was up to the participants to set their own goals without knowing how to win the game. Life Monopoly is a miniature life situation. When playing the game, as in real life, we decide on our own goals and make sacrifices to achieve them.

day 2
The subcommittees designed and led the games held on the second day. There were booths providing different games, for example, stacking game, Pictionary and quizzes based on public affairs. There were also booths where the participants were assigned various disabilities. The participants had to complete certain tasks designed to give them a taste of what it would be like to live with the disabilities.
reflection
Experiencing is the best way to understand. By fasting for 24 hours and participating in the games, participants experienced hunger, poverty and disabilities. Through endurance, participants gained an awareness and understanding of these social problems. We hope this will ignite their passion to contribute to solving the problems in synergy with others.

The lakes in Plitvice Lakes National Park are all different colours, ranging from emerald green to turquoise to deep blue. The colours of the lakes are caused by the minerals in the water and the way the sunlight reflects off of them. Advice to Freshers
Congratulations on getting into Imperial College London! Besides the social and hall life mentioned above, I would advise making the best use of the resources that Imperial College provides. One of the most useful ones would be the personal tutor arrangement. Imperial College assigns a personal tutor to each student to look after the student’s wellbeing and academic progression. Many students value their tutor’s guidance on optional modules, final year projects, international study opportunities and summer placements. If you encounter any problems, I would suggest discussing them with your personal tutor at an early stage.
Moreover, for those who wish to have career guidance unique to Hong Kong, you can join theImperial College London Mentoring Programme run in partnership among the Imperial CollegeAlumni Association of Hong Kong (ICAAHK), the Imperial College Chinese Society (ICCS) andICPASS. The mentors are alumni of Imperial College from different disciplines and are wellplaced to provide advice on personal aspirations and career guidance to current Imperial students.
I would say the first year is the transition between high school and university with many big changes in terms of academic demands and social life. It’s an exciting yet intimidating period. “Work hard, play hard” is the key to making the most of university life. However, it is not easy to find a balance immediately, so don’t be afraid to explore during the first year and as your experience grows, you’ll easily manage it! ;)

Congratulations on getting a degree at Imperial College London! I believe it has been a long way for you to get this far but believe it or not, the fun part is just about to begin!!! Not only you get to know more people who share the same interest, you get to expand your social circle with other universities. However, I understand that you might be scared of the new environment and the change in lifestyle but rest assured, everything is going to be alright.
My advice to all freshers is to try as many new things as you can and grasp all the fun you can have this year! This is because you will only get busier when you pass year one. It would be a lie if I tell you that you wouldn’t struggle during your course. Afterall, Imperial ranked in the top ten in the world. Therefore, I will also advise you not to miss any lectures and tutorial sessions. It is also important that you take a balance between work and life. It wouldn’t be an easy task but I am sure that all of you will manage XD
Most of you will be living in halls and I can assure you that most of your hallmates will be your friends for at least the next 3 years. So, please make sure you join as many hall activities as you can and socialise with them. Furthermore, I will also encourage you to join ICPASS activities as those activities will give you an opportunity to reach out to other Hong Kong students studying in other universities. In terms of the living cost, the cost of living in the UK is definitely high and in order to minimise your spending, I would suggest you learn how to cook or make friends with your roommates who know how to cook. For students living far away from Imperial, I would also suggest you to buy a student rail card or try Santander.
Living far away from home might be a challenge for some of you as this might be the first time for you to study abroad. You might feel homesick sometimes but believe it or not, the friends you are going to make will definitely cheer you up! Last but not least, best of luck to you new life at imperial!!!
