Andhra Pradesh Agriculture Minister visits ICRISAT to strengthen partnership on agricultural research for development For four decades now, ICRISAT and the Government of Andhra Pradesh have been actively working together to end poverty, hunger and environmental degradation in the State – a partnership that has generated pro-poor agricultural innovations and investments and enhanced agricultural productivity and improved livelihoods of smallholder farmers.

levating the partnership to better achieve impacts and further boost the State’s sustainable and inclusive agricultural growth, an official delegation from the Andhra Pradesh State Government led by Honorable Agriculture Minister Mr Kanna Lakshminarayana visited ICRISAT on 24 May. The delegation sought to have a better appreciation of ICRISAT’s new programs and initiatives and to further explore areas for collaboration, and was welcomed by Director General William Dar who highlighted ICRISAT’s contributions in improving productivity and profitability of the State’s smallholder agriculture.

The visit also served as an opportunity for ICRISAT to present to the delegation four proposed initiatives to boost rainfed agriculture in the State, namely: 1) Increasing productivity and profitability of groundnut cultivation; 2) Promoting high-yielding pigeonpea hybrids; 3) Soil health mapping and knowledge sharing; and 4) Increased productivity of sorghum in the rice-fallow system. Agriculture Minister Lakshminarayana acknowledged the impacts of ICRISAT’s research for development activities with various partners in Andhra Pradesh, particularly in making the smallholder farmers’ food and nutrition security and improved livelihoods to page 2 ...4
