The first luxurious retirement campus of its kind in the Kennebecasis Valley Everett and Marjorie Healy knew they wanted to spend their retirement years at Parkland in the Valley before it was even built.

to two-bedroom apartments, complete with kitchenette and full bath or shower.

And now, five months after the Rothesay couple moved in, Mr. Healy says he feels like he lives in a luxury hotel – with one big difference.

Seniors who live at Jubilee Hall enjoy a wide array of exceptional amenities, including fine dining (lunch and supper) served by professional wait staff in a well-appointed dining room. The menus, which are designed by a chef and change weekly, include choices such as Atlantic maple salmon and chicken stuffed with lobster.

“The folks who were strangers five months ago are now our friends,” says Mr. Healy, 88. “Everyone on staff has become our friends and does so much to make us feel at home. They are almost like sons and daughters to us.” The first of its kind in the Saint John area, Parkland in the Valley offers a unique continuum of retirement living options to suit individual needs - all with an eye to luxury and peace of mind. “We take all the headaches of daily living away for our clients, and they can spend their retirement years exactly the way they choose,” says John Campbell, General Manager of Parkland in the Valley. Parkland in the Valley is comprised of three elegant, newlyconstructed residences, all connected. Jubilee Hall, which opened in June, offers traditional retirement living for independent seniors, with a focus on enjoyable and carefree living. Embassy Hall, a nursing home that opened in April, is designed to accommodate those who require 24-hour nursing and palliative care. Concorde Hall, which opened in November, is an assisted living residence for seniors who require some support but still want to remain independent and active. Admission to Embassey and Concord Hall residence is gained through the NB Department’s of Social Development Single Entry Point system. The campus-style concept gives clients the ability to live in the residence that suits their needs now, with options to make a different choice in the future if their needs change. Jubilee Hall contains 69 suites, ranging from studio one-bedrooms

Other amenities include a weekly linen and housekeeping service, chauffeur service to take residents shopping and to appointments as well as 24-hour emergency response and front desk concierge. Residents can also enjoy a wide variety of recreational activities, including a bowling alley, a movie theatre, shuffleboard, darts, a pool table, a library with a computer and hi-speed internet and as well as a lounge area. All the amenities are included in the one monthly bill, says Campbell, and when potential clients compare the cost of living at Jubilee Hall to the cost of living on their own, the numbers are usually close. Seniors who live Jubilee Hall no longer have to worry about daily living costs such as property taxes, utilities, local telephone and cable service, car insurance and gas or home maintenance costs. The full-time recreation coordinator plans a variety of activities, ranging from a baking club and cribbage tournaments to exercise classes and guest speakers. Campbell says residents choose how much they want to get involved in the activities. “We don’t make choices for our residents,” he says. “But I have seen some wonderful transformations. Some residents who were quiet and kept to themselves when they first moved in are now taking part in lots of activities. It’s wonderful to see that kind of response.”

Avondale Kitchens

Their concept is simple; they make getting your new kitchen easy. Avondale starts with professional designing, and also help with the selections and renovation details, and then they wrap up the project with their professional installation. With their designs, custom abilities and special counters, Avondale offers very high-end kitchens at affordable prices.

and counters” this special counter has no seams, the sink is under-mounted and it only costs about $600 on a new kitchen or $2,000 on replacement counters. For more information please visit www.AvondaleKitchens.com.

Tell me about your unique kitchen designing process.

One major misconception is that custom kitchens, or more specifically Avondale’s custom kitchens, are more expensive. With that mindset there are a lot of consumers who don’t even check us out. Many of our clients tell us that when they actually add in taxes, installation and accessories, Avondale’s prices are sometimes lower than the big box stores, or at the very least comparable.

Avondale does very quick, no-charge, at-your-home designs. Right from the start the customer will typically get layouts, professional 3D drawings and ideas all within a quick 60 to 90-minute sitting. “The quotes are ready not in weeks, days or even hours, but within 10 minutes of reviewing the personalized hand drawings. When finished the customer will have in hand: professional drawings to keep, and peace of mind that this kitchen project can come together very easily.”

What special kitchen counters does Avondale offer? Avondale has what is called the “Avondale seamless sinks and counters.” Let me explain. When you buy a kitchen, you typically get what’s called a “post formed” or “roll top” counter; these have seams and the sink sits on top and they cost about $500 per kitchen counter. To upgrade to a seamless counter with under-mounted sinks, you normally have to go to Corian, Granite or Quartz counters, all of which are very good choices. However, each carries a $5,000 to $7,000 cost. Many years ago Avondale invented the “Avondale seamless sinks 6

What misconceptions do you find in this business?

What is the best part about this business for you? When I started many years ago, I thought it was the craftsmanship; over time I grew to know it was more about the creativity. What about now? It’s all about meeting a hundred new friends a year and making their dream kitchens come true for them.

Any advice for a homeowner when buying a new kitchen? Check out your kitchen supplier, their showroom should speak volumes about them. Then go one step further. Get references; it’s easy to do in the Maritimes. The kitchen supplier should be able to pass on a few names of past customers they’ve done work for.

If someone is interested in kitchens how can they educate themselves about kitchens or Avondale Kitchens? The quickest way to start is to simply browse the Avondale website at www.AvondaleKitchens.com. They also could make a trip to the Avondale showroom in Woodstock, New Brunswick; it’s not that far and it is well worth the drive. Get some friends together and make a day of it. If you have time, the Avondale staff will very obligingly give you a complete factory tour. In about 15 minutes you can see the complete process of a kitchen being born.

Active Physio Patients are in good hands at Active Physiotherapy Clinic 33 Beaverbrook Ave Saint John NB (506) 652-4711

Want to know what makes Cathy Simon smile? Hearing laughter coming from a patient who used to be in pain or watching a woman bend down and pick up her child without wincing in discomfort. “I love getting people back to being able to function, able to live their everyday lives,” says Simon. “I love seeing the relaxed look on someone’s face when they feel better. I can hear how much better they feel in their voice and by the way they are chatting. That’s great. That makes everything worthwhile.” An experienced physiotherapist and owner of Active Physiotherapy Clinic in Saint John, Simon focuses on returning each patient to their highest level of function possible. She and her knowledgeable staff regularly take continuing education courses in order to offer the most up to date assessment and treatment techniques to their patients. Located in Saint John’s unique “round building” at 33 Beaverbrook Ave, Active Physiotherapy Clinic is the only locallyowned physiotherapy clinic accredited by the Canadian Physiotherapy Association. When she launched her business 16 years ago, Simon worked on her own, with her mother serving as 8

her receptionist. Nowadays, the clinic has grown into a Wellness Centre, with three Physiotherapists (Cathy Simon, Heather Lambert, Rhonda JordenHayward), a Kinesiologist, (Mary-Lou Hanson) a Pedorthist (John Hooper), a Massage Therapist (Matthew Wills) and two support staff (Karie George, Sherri Gould). The clinic also works closely with other healthcare team members such as Physicians, Surgeons, Occupational Therapists, Dietician and Psychologist. “You’ve got to treat the whole person. We provide a whole package of care,” says Simon, who has worked as a physiotherapist for 22 years and helped world-class athletes like Canadian figure skater Shae-Lynn Bourne and Olympic gold medalist Bruny Surin. Her clinic features a well-equipped gym boasting everything from treadmills, weights and stability balls to Pilates machines and a Wii. “My patients love the Wii. It’s great for their mobility and balance. They have fun while they are exercising. It’s amazing,” she says. Simon says it’s common to hear lots of laughter coming from the gym because she and her staff promote a relaxed and positive atmosphere. “We give lots of positive reinforcement to our patients. It’s an important part of the healing process,” says Simon.

A wide range of patients come to Active Physiotherapy Clinic, including people with neck and back injuries from accidents. But Simon and her staff also treat people recovering many types of surgery or who have undergone cancer treatment. People with Multiple Sclerosis, urinary incontinence, Fibromyalgia and many other conditions can often be helped with physiotherapy too. “It’s not just backs and necks and sprained ankles,” she says. Physiotherapists are university-trained specialists who have in-depth knowledge of how the body works, says Simon. They use specialized hands-on clinical skills to assess, diagnose and treat symptoms of illness, injury or disability. “You do not need a doctor’s referral to initiate Physiotherapy”, Simon adds. She says one of the most important aspects of their work is education. “We educate patients about their condition or injury. We explain. We listen,” says Simon. “Sometimes we don’t have to turn a machine on or use manual therapy to treat a patient. Sometimes they just need to have their condition explained and instruction in a home treatment program.” She also feels helping people to prevent injuries and chronic pain is an important part of her role too. “More and more people are coming to us to prevent

injuries.” “Many problems are related to posture, and over time, people develop conditions like tendonitis or chronic headaches that could have easily been prevented,” she says. Simon volunteers quite a bit of time educating people about injury prevention. She often gives presentations at schools, nursing homes and various workplaces. She and her staff also do on-site visits to evaluate workstation ergonomics. The clinic also has extensive experience in industrial assessments, functional capacity evaluations and job prescreening, even going as far as setting up obstacle courses in their gym to test and evaluate firemen for example. They have wheelchairs and stretchers and IVs in their gym, so they can properly evaluate, for example, whether a nurse can perform all the tasks required for that job. “We try to make our workplace simulation as real as possible,” says Simon. A lifelong resident of Saint John, Simon has managed to juggle raising four girls with her husband while building her successful clinic. She says her life is busy, but she wouldn’t have it any other way.

“I just love what I do.”

Above all else, we care about your security Imagine you have just left a relationship or situation in which you felt threatened. Now imagine the feeling that would come with knowing you are have the security of a button that will bring help immediately if you are ever in your home or business and have the unfortunate experience to need it. To a woman who feels unsafe or threatened, Third Eye Security can feel like an extra layer of warmth on a very dark and cold day. Dean Leonard, owner of Third Eye Security, one of the fastest-growing security companies

10

in Atlantic Canada has spent the last four years helping provide that feeling. “We care about your safety and we will do whatever we can to work with you to keep you safe in your home or business.” Third Eye was able to help another local business feel more secure. “We got a call from a business owner, after she and her clients received repeated threatening visits from a man at her office. She called us and we agreed to a security system, but when we came to install, she felt she didn’t have the funds to pay for the system. Since I personally believe everyone should feel secure, we worked out mutually beneficial payment terms, and I installed a panic button under the counter in her office,” says Leonard. “Many women who need our help most urgently are financially strapped, and I

feel it’s my duty to help whenever I can.” Most security systems feature buttons for the fire department, paramedics, and police. For as low as $9.99 per month, you have the peace of mind that comes with knowing that any time one of these buttons is activated, LANVAC, which provides monitoring service in English, French and Cantonese, will call the location where the button was pressed, and immediately dispatch emergency help to you if needed. As always, any time you have a problem with the security system hardware, you can call Third Eye Security. “Most problems can easily be solved over the phone,” says Leonard. “With Third Eye Security, that service is free.” Peace of mind is worth the price, at any cost, but with Third Eye Security, the cost is within reach.

“The product speaks for itself.” Family-owned Fundy Energy Ltd. is committed to top-notch customer service

When Fundy Energy Ltd. began offering a premiere grade of home heating oil in 2009, hundreds of homeowners made the switch. Since then, only one customer has switched back to regular oil. “Obviously, the product speaks for itself,” says William Gould, co-owner of Fundy Energy Ltd., a family-owned fuel delivery company for Petro-Canada. “Our customers love it.” Fundy Energy Ltd. is the Saint John distributor of Petro-Canada’s ThermaClean home heating fuel, which is specially formulated to burn more cleanly and efficiently than regular oil. Gould says his customers tell him that ThermaClean has significantly reduced the amount of smoke, soot and corrosion in their furnaces. When soot builds up inside a furnace, it prevents heat from being efficiently distributed throughout a home. Less soot and corrosion will also help extend the life of a furnace. “My customers really noticed a difference in how heat was distributed. This product

costs a little bit more but my customers say it’s well worth it,” says Gould.

that he’d even routinely do deliveries on Christmas Day.

He says burning ThermaClean increases the efficiency of furnaces and reduces the amount of maintenance required and the amount of emissions produced.

“If it was 2 a.m. and your tank is empty, my father would be there,” says Gould.

ThermaClean will also help protect oil tanks because it has an anti-corrosive ingredient that coats the inside of the tank with a protective film. And because it burns more cleanly and efficiently with less wasted heat, a furnace using ThermaClean may burn less oil, saving customers money over the long term. “Giving homeowners the choice to burn this premiere fuel is just part of our commitment to customer service and satisfaction,” says Gould. “We’re happy when our customers are happy.” Fundy Energy Ltd. has a long history of providing top-notch customer service. Opened by Gould’s father, Jim, in 1988 as Capital Gas and Oil in Fredericton, Gould fondly remembers heading out with his dad to deliver fuel. He says his father was so committed to customer service www.innovationsnb.ca

“Dad always felt it was important to go the extra distance for his customers and even as we’ve grown, we have been able to keep my father’s values intact.” Now called Fundy Energy Ltd., the company has offices in Fredericton, Moncton, Sussex, Woodstock and Saint John. The company employs 50 people. Gould says the around the clock drivers will still deliver anytime a customer is in need and will also handle maintenance calls. No matter what time of day they call, customers will always talk to a real person and not an automated answering system, says Gould. He says his staff knows many of their customers by name.

“We give customers a little more of that personal touch,” says Gould. 11

Where fashion meets comfort and style As the owner of a shoe store, Cathy Hutchinson has a surprising confession to make. She loves it when customers try on lots of shoes. In fact, she doesn’t mind running back and forth to the stockroom one bit. “If I bring them a dozen shoes to try, I’m more than happy to do it”. Customers are our first priority; we’re here to help them find just the right fit and the perfect shoe for whatever the occasion. “Shoe fitting is a skill and it’s so important to find shoes that do fit. Have your feet measured annually, and keep in mind you want to avoid foot injury or chronic foot problems”, says Hutchinson. It’s that exceptional dedication to customer service that has made Manchester Shoe Salon a ‘must stop’ store that attracts customers from other parts of Atlantic Canada. Some of Hutchinson’s most regular customers are from out of town and they make sure they get to her store every time they are in Saint John. Manchester Shoe Salon recently moved to Market Square, in the midst of the city’s most bustling and vibrant shopping area. “ There’s a positive energy here,” says Hutchinson. “Market Square is called the ‘Festival Place’ for a reason. My staff and customers love it”. The move gave Hutchinson the chance to design her new store with a fresh, new look and feel and Market Square offers convenient underground parking. A Saint John resident for many years, Hutchinson made a career move in 1994 when the opportunity came up to open a shoe store. “I love shoes and I love meeting people. It was perfect”, she says. The store name was a tribute to the historic Manchester Robertson Allison department store that once graced King Street. Manchester Shoe Salon is the largest ladies’ independent shoe store in New Brunswick. The store draws customers because of the quality and extensive selection of shoes, boots, slippers, purses and accessories. Hutchinson says, “on a daily basis we take roughly 15,000 steps and over one million pounds 12

www.innovationsnb.ca

of force are absorbed by our feet! Do we need good shoes – you bet!” She carefully selects her inventory from some of the best and well-known brands around the world. “Doing your homework to research and bring in the right mix of inventory for the store is paramount - shoes for comfort and wellness, shoes with a European flare and shoes for those fashionistas are all on my list of ‘what to buy’.” Hutchinson says she keeps an eye on the latest trends but doesn’t allow that to completely dictate her purchasing. “I’ve got edgy, fashionable shoes for women who really want to strut their stuff, but I also base my buying choices on what my customers are going to wear everyday. Today’s woman wants and needs comfortable footwear for her exceptionally busy lifestyle. In fact, Hutchinson knows many of her customers by name, what kind of shoes they love and when ordering she often picks out styles with specific customers in mind. She says her knowledgeable, friendly staff

have contributed greatly to her store’s success and longevity in a very competitive marketplace, “they give my customers extraordinary service”.

“Women express themselves through their shoes – a great shoe creates a certain body language and attitude and shoes can be the key to any outfit.” Hutchinson enjoys being an entrepreneur and contributing to the local economy and her community. She also makes it a priority to give back to the community by participating in a variety of fundraising events such as fashion shows that raise money for worthwhile causes, the Canadian Cancer Society, Hospice, Mind Care, Hestia House, Unicef, Loch Lomond Villa and Rocmaura Nursing Home to name a few. At the end of the day, “I love it when I know I have made a customer happy, she has a pair of shoes that she adores and walks out of my store excited! That just makes my day!”

Mill Rats unleash total entertainment package! Pro basketball with all its glitz and glamour will soon make its debut in New Brunswick. And when the Saint John Mill Rats hit the court at Harbour Station in early December, fans can expect much more than just a high energy contest between two world-class teams. Mill Rats President and General Manager Ian McCarthy says fans will also be treated to a first-class entertainment experience. “Fan can expect high-flying, slam dunks and NBA-calibre excitement,” says McCarthy. “It’s going to be quite a show.” Fans will enjoy half-time shows, contests during time-outs, performances by the Mill Rats’ dance team and antics by the team’s new mascot. He said a venue like Harbour Station, which includes a Jumbo Tron, allows the team to host a much grander game show than was possible at its previous home city of Manchester, New Hampshire.

“I am really looking forward to what we are going to be able to do,” says McCarthy. “Fans are absolutely going to love it. We are going to be able to try some cool things.”

the teams in our division,” he says.

He predicts fans will be more than willing to travel from across the province to get a glimpse at basketball of this calibre – and the spectacle that comes with it.

“Every single question we had, the community answered bigger than we thought. People are just excited about the team. We were selling season tickets even before we had a schedule,” he says.

“There’s really nothing quite like seeing a live sporting event,” says McCarthy. “A lot of people are going to want to come out and see this level of basketball.”

Already the team has been working hard to get involved in the community by hosting basketball clinics with local youth.

The Mill Rats, part of the Premier Basketball League, announced plans in June to permanently move the team to Saint John after extensive talks with local officials and tours of the city and facilities. The Mill Rats will compete in an eight-team league, which includes divisional rivals Quebec, Vermont and Halifax.

“The kids get to come out and be taught basketball by professional players. One of our players David Cooper, also a coowner, is 6-8, another one of the guys is 6-9, so they really get the kids’ attention. That’s fun,” says McCarthy.

“There’s going to be some great atmosphere at the games because there are already some existing rivalries with

He says the City of Saint John, and indeed people across the province, welcomed the team with open arms.

The team is also developing a program that will see them host slam-dunk contests at schools, and they recently signed a sponsorship deal with the Canada Games Aquatic Centre to allow its players to swim and train there.

Regular Season Sunday Thursday Saturday Sunday Friday Saturday Thursday Friday Sunday Wednesday Friday Sunday Thursday Sunday Friday Thursday Sunday Thursday Saturday Sunday

David Cooper and Ian McCarthy “We want to be part of the community. We’re not just here for a year,” says McCarthy. “We permanently relocated here. We want people to know that we are Saint John’s team. We are New Brunswick’s team. My wife and kids are here. My kids go school here. We made it our home.” Fans will get their first glimpse of New Brunswick’s first professional basketball team on Thursday, Dec. 9 when the Mill Rats host Quebec. The first regular season home game is Jan. 2. The regular season runs through March 27, with playoffs to follow. McCarthy says ticket sales are going strong. League officials have already said expansion into other Maritime centres could be on the horizon. McCarthy says he would love to see teams added in Moncton, Sydney and Ottawa. Season’s tickets for the 2011 season in the upper bowl of Harbour Station will cost $90 for adults, $80 for seniors and students and $50 for youths. Lower bowl season’s tickets are $120 for adults, $100 for seniors and students and $70 for youths. Courtside season’s tickets range from $200 to $1,000.

your passion for local sports

What do local sports mean to our community? Local sports are one of the cornerstones to community success. They bring fun, physical activity and promote teamwork. They also help in honing essential life skills and contribute to good personal habits. We need more focus on what’s happening in our community and particularly in the areas of wellness, activity and sport. There is a sport out there for everyone… even for those that feel that are not athletically inclined.

Stats Canada provides a revealing look at our health as Canadians:

Although many of us love hockey, baseball, basketball and football, these sports don’t top the list for all of us. Some of us do not fit the “main stream sports” mold. For those who are looking for something outside of the “big four” sports, there are a wide variety of options such as archery, running, fishing, biking, synchronized swimming, judo, boxing, javelin, diving, canoeing, kayaking, bowling, curling… etc. The options are endless.

… Data from the CHMS show that fitness levels of children and youth have declined significantly since 1981, regardless of age or sex. Fitness levels of adults have also declined, particularly among younger adults.

Innovations Media Inc has launched a new publication called Ignite SJ dedicated to bringing awareness to the many athletes and sports that make our sporting community what it is. We will be covering all types and skill levels from minor sports to local professional sports such as the Mill Rats basketball team. We have a tremendous amount of hard working and talented athletes in our community that excel in their sports. We also have a large and equally important group of athletes, both young and old, that play for the fun of it. Both groups deserve more exposure. We have a vibrant sporting community from hockey to cup stacking, we have it all! The focus on sports and wellness is important to our community for a number of reasons. Our youth are building a strong work ethic and good character as they go through the minor sport ranks and are also getting valuable exercise. With an overwhelming need to focus on health in our community, it is very important to bring awareness to the many sporting options available to both children and adults.

Between 1981 and 2009, fitness levels of Canadian children and youth, as well as those of adults, declined significantly, according to the first findings from the Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS). This is the most comprehensive national survey ever conducted in Canada to determine fitness levels...

Among youth aged 15 to 19, the percentage whose waist circumference put them at an increased or high risk of health problems more than tripled. Among adults, decreases in fitness levels over the same period were particularly pronounced for young adults aged 20 to 39. Within this group, the percentage with a waist circumference that placed them at a high risk for health problems more than quadrupled. The proportions went from 5% to 21% among men, and from 6% to 31% among women. Roughly 3% of the adult population had high blood pressure that was undiagnosed in 2009. Your destination for high quality, high fashion coats and accessories If you’re looking for a quality coat in a contemporary yet classic style, look no further than Collections Nicole Boivin in Moncton. The store’s lines come from Canada and Europe and there is a large selection of quality brands for all occasions and many different price points. Says owner Nicole Boivin. “I’ve had people come here after not being able to find what they are looking for in Montreal, Toronto or New York. They are surprised when they find all the brands they like right here in Moncton.” Customers can choose between many fabric types – wool, leather, fur, etc. The coats are so light you barely feel them, some of them are very warm and wind- and water-resistant. Many coats also reverse for maximum flexibility. Collections Nicole Boivin carries only a few sizes in each style and Nicole chooses the fabric and style for each line, so the coats are also very unique. Some lines can also be custom-ordered to fit special sizing – a wonderful option.

“We also believe that a coat should be made to fit a woman perfectly, so any coat that you buy in our store can be tailored to fit you like a glove – at no additional charge,” says Nicole. “This is a valueadded service you won’t find in almost any other clothing store. But even if you have a coat that wasn’t purchased here, we can also alter or repair it for you. I’m very lucky to have Suzie, who is a clothing designer and seamstress. She has an incredible talent for taking an older style coat and updating it for a new life.” A part of Collections Nicole Boivin’s business is fur repairs, cleaning and storage. “Our fur vault is state-of-the-art; it’s humidity-controlled, cooled and made of solid concrete. We went to the limit of technology to ensure that your fur given the best storage possible.” Older fur, as long as it is in good condition, can also be redesigned to modernize the coats and sheared to a shorter fur length. “This is the new way to wear fur,” says Boivin. “Fur, while absolutely luxurious, should be worn and styled to fit your life.

So bring it in, and you’ll have a coat that can be worn for another generation.” Nicole and Suzie offer a level of service that customers notice and appreciate. “We work with you one-to-one, and offer private shopping experiences by appointment. We understand style and what looks good on a woman. In the end it’s about you feeling special and welcomed.”

Since 1984, The Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada is a national, grassroots organization dedicated to providing a once in a lifetime experience to children between the ages of three and seventeen years who have been diagnosed with a high risk, lifethreatening illness. It is our mission that Children’s Wish is dedicated to working with the community to provide these children the opportunity to realize their most heartfelt wish and that every child enjoy the best quality of life possible, including the experience of laughter, shared joy and treasured memories with the important people in their lives. To date we have granted over 16,000 wishes across Canada, and in New Brunswick we have granted over 680 wishes and are currently working on approximately fifty-five wishes. Travel 20

is the most requested wish, with computers, bedroom makeovers or games rooms also being popular. The wish belongs to the Wish Child, but it involves the entire family The New Brunswick Chapter of The Children’s Wish Foundation started in 1986 and although many years have passed and numerous changes have taken place as the Foundation has grown, we are still only a staff of three full time employees. Gerry Beresford is the present Chapter Director, Marilyn Essensa is the Wish Coordinator and recently joining the team is Victoria Kean, Fundraising Coordinator. We have worked over the years to build an open approachable rapport with the local hospitals, as well as the IWK in Halifax, where so many of our New Brunswick children go to receive their treatments. We have built our relationships with the Doctors, Nurses, www.innovationsnb.ca

Social Workers and Child Life Specialists and when they feel that a child would meet our criteria for a wish, they’ll call us and we contact the parents and start the wish application, it’s as simple as that. Individuals who may know of a family who has a child diagnosed with an illness can contact our office to make the referral, as well, we get referrals from other organizations who deal with children, such as Muscular Dystrophy, Cystic Fibrosis and Hemophilia. When a wish is approved, the Wish Coordinator will meet with the family to deliver Roary to the child and take some time to discuss what they would like for a wish. Our beloved symbol of courage, Roary is much more than a mascot, or a new plush toy, he embodies hope for a brighter future, and gives our wish children the strength to push forward. Thirteen year old Dalton Brown from Grand Manan recently travelled to

Noemie is 11 and her wish was to go to Disneyworld and have tea with the princesses.

Toronto with his parents, Heather and Philip to meet Toby Keith and to attend a concert at the Molsen Canadian Amphitheatre. The Foundation flew the family up a couple of days prior to the concert and had a total of a week to enable them to tour the area. Dalton was able to bring his best friend along as a “sibling sub”, which is something that we allow wish children, who are an only child to do. While in Toronto, Children’s Wish provided a Toronto City Pass for the family to visit many area attractions, such as the CN Tower, the Toronto Zoo, Casa Loma, the Science Centre and the ROM, which Heather said was so huge they finally had to split up in order that each of the boys got to see what was of most interest to them. Every detail is looked after for the family, from flights, transportation at the destination and expense money. Prior to the concert, Dalton was able to

meet Toby Keith and have his picture taken. This happened quite quickly, but was certainly a memorable moment and the concert was outstanding. We have our Wishmaker Walk for Wishes, held in October each year, which has been an event in the Maritime Provinces for over fifteen years, but for the past five years has now been held across Canada in each of the Provinces. We have been so fortunate that we have an amazing group of dedicated individuals in New Brunswick who take the time from their busy lives to donate the time and energy to volunteering with Children’s Wish and with their committees and assistance from the NB Chapter office, they organize the Walk’s in their area. Over $200,000.00 was raised in NB this year and 1.3 Million across Canada. We always welcome new volunteers and realize there are many organizations that an individual can donate their time to, and so we feel privileged when

they choose Children’s Wish. I think each of us may know of a family who is experiencing the turmoil of having their lives turned upside down with the diagnosis of an illness, and when it is a child, it is all the more upsetting and seemingly unjust. Giving up some of their spare time is their way of helping the wish children and their families.

If you would like to become a volunteer, please contact us at 1-800-267-9474 I think it’s so important that we are thankful for each day we have, and that we remember to hug our children and tell them we love them. None of us knows what tomorrow will bring, just as our wish families never thought they would be in the situation they are in, but are courageously facing it one day at a time.
