Take your pick! Welcome to Imperial College Union and the Clubs, Societies & Projects Handbook 2011/12. Our Union is run by many, many student volunteers as well as five Sabbatical Officers, including me. I’m your Deputy President (Clubs & Societies), which means, as the name suggests, that I am in charge of looking after the 300+ activity groups we have in the Union. This handbook contains introductions to every single Club, Society & Project. So, take a flick through the following pages – you’re guaranteed to find a group that caters for your interests.
Monya Zard Deputy President (Clubs & Societies)
Kick back and relax Many of our students build their social lives around the groups they get involved with and considering that alongside your degree, you could leave as a qualified diver, expert projectionist or medal winning athlete, who can blame them? Everyone needs time to kick back and relax so whether you prefer to play video games, curl up with a book or kick a ball around, there is almost certainly a group out there for you. To see the full list of our Clubs, Societies & Projects online, go to imperialcollegeunion.org/clubslist. If you see one that takes your fancy, you can join online instantly. However, if you’d like a chance to try a couple of things before you decide which ones are for you then make sure you attend Freshers’ Fair on Tuesday 04 October (11am-4pm) when we turn campus into a bustling bazaar. Every Club, Society & Project gets the opportunity to show you what they’re about and you get the opportunity to sign up to mailing lists, get to know who’s who and – most imperialcollegeunion.org/clubslist
importantly, of course – pick up plenty of freebies. It is always an awesome day and gives you the best opportunity to get to know what’s out there before you sign up to anything. As trading is banned you don’t need to worry about being pressured into buying anything on the day. For more information on how to get involved with the groups within the Union, check out imperialcollegeunion.org/clubsand-societies. Whether you want to join Aikido or Yacht club, you can get in touch directly with each group via email. If you have any problems, don’t hesitate to ask. My door is always open I’m always up for hearing your feedback. The Sabbatical Officers are here to make sure your time at university is the best it can be, so don’t be a stranger, get in touch! Joining a Club, Society or Project Why join one?
Membership
There are a number of good reasons to join one or more of the 300 Clubs, Societies & Projects we have at Imperial. Firstly, they are a great way to meet people with similar interests and ethics and get together. The huge number of Clubs, Societies & Projects we have guarantees that your interests will be catered for, whether they are sports, outdoor pursuits, or social activities. Secondly, the Clubs, Societies & Projects provide a great way to sample new things for minimal cost – important when you’re living on a student budget. The Union heavily subsidises Club, Society & Project activities so the array of activites is much gentler on your finances. Thirdly, Clubs, Societies & Projects at the College are a great way to gain experience, whether through training with talented individuals, or simply learning to run an organisation or write a budget. These skills will stand you in good stead in the future, both in your personal and professional life. And lastly, one of the most valuable aspects of our hundreds of Clubs, Societies & Projects is that you can try something you may never have considered before, and it may become your favourite hobby. You wouldn’t have the same opportunity anywhere else!
The Union’s website imperialcollegeunion.org offers you the opportunity to look at all our Clubs, Societies & Projects online, find out more about them and most importantly join them. By now you should have received correspondence from Imperial College London and already have your College login. If not, you can do this easily online. You need to go to www.imperial. ac.uk/ict/activateaccount.Here you will need to read and accept the terms and conditions, then enter: • your full name as given to the College in your application form • your date of birth as requested • your College Identifier (CID), which is on all official correspondence about your place at Imperial College London. Once you have done this, your College username and password will be activated. Keep note of these and don’t forget them. You will now be able to log in to the Union’s website imperialcollegeunion.org. Simply log in using your College login details and fill in a quick form about yourself. The Union website is the place to see all the latest news, events and meetings that are happening in your Union. It is also the place to go to purchase all your event tickets, view the What’s On calendar, and join any Club, Society or Project. If you click on Clubs, Societies & Projects in the main menu, then select A – Z you can see a list of all our Clubs, Societies & Projects. Select the one you are interested in, then from their sub-menu select Shop. You will see a membership product for that Club, Society or Project. Click on that and select Checkout. Here you will be taken through a typical online shopping process and automatically become a member of that Club, Society or Project!
