RANIPINK STUDIO Her love for colours and especially colour Pink gave her the inspiration to give life to RANIPINK STUDIO. Indrani Royan the owner of RANIPINK STUDIO sits in a candid chat with Supriya Khemani. How did designing cross your life? I was always inclined towards creating something new since my childhood. Initially, I started to create my own clothes with the help of my tailor but they never matched my imagination. Moreover, those days fashion was a very alien concept at our place but I still remember how I always tried to imagine how I could make a garment look more beautiful. A very close childhood friend always reminds me of how I changed the colour of the buttons on my school uniform, and it completely transformed the garment. Ofcourse, I did get

iCraze | March 2016 | 22

into a bit of trouble because of this. I finished my schooling and went to Kolkata to join Rabindra Bharati University. I am a very talented Indian Classical Singer and my elders insisted not to waste my talent. Although, I graduated in fine arts, my passion for clothes and designing never died.

It was then I decided that I wanted to pursue fashion designing professionally and got admitted to the prestigious Pearl Academy, New Delhi. What do you get inspired from? My style of work is always inspired by nature and

colours. I am constantly in search of something new that has not been seen before. My work is inspired by art and by art I mean all forms of art. I also take inspiration from heritage embroideries and try to add something new to it for the future generations. I like to manually hand draw my patterns for embroideries. Although, I have lived my entire professional life in big cities and I get a lot of peace from the simplicity of small town life. I can easily say that this is that one trait in me which has made me the person I am today. What do colours mean to you? Colours are a reflection of one’s personality. I have always believed that colour is the most important element of any design. It’s no secret that different colours make a person feel different. Without getting too scientific, I use this basic property of colour in all my designs. At RANIPINK STUDIO, each garment is dyed in a specific colour depending on the design and the idea behind it. How did RANIPINK come into existence? RANIPINK STUDIO came into existence in 2013 by my husband and me. I had worked in this industry with a few big names and I knew I had what it takes to make it. We started off with a small budget and I was extremely

privileged to have the full support of my in-laws. We took up a small basement in HSR Layout with 3 workers. Initially, I did find it very challenging to work in a new environment. We used to spend whole days walking around, meeting people to understand the markets. It was a lot of hard work but it has paid off. Coming to the name, personally I love the colour pink and in colloquial terms RANIPINK refers to the colour magenta. The key elements with all of RANIPINK STUDIO’s collections are the rich colour of the garments, quality of fabric, intricate embroideries and a glorious Indian aesthetic.Every garment created at RANIPINK STUDIO has something very unique about it. The embroideries that we make are unique, both in design and making. We can proudly say that the embroideries made at RANIPINK STUDIO are one of its kinds. How do you differentiate between trend, fashion and style? Trends change while fashion lives forever. Style is a personal choice. Your designs to you are? My designs have always been colourful. My current collection will take you back to the bygone years but at the same time it meets the expectations of the modern

women and hence is aptly named as “An Ode to the Urban Princess”. Also, you will find a lot of experimentation with the traditional embroideries and the designs has been given a very modern twist while retaining its heritage. I always believe that in addition to look, garments should be wearable. All my Bridal Lehengas and Gowns are very easy to wear even for longer durations. Your favourite outfit? A beautifully flared Lehenga with a perfectly fitted corset. Your favourite cloth to work on? I like the richness of silks. I usually work with all types of silks, crepes, satin etc. I keep exploring the possibility of working with more traditional fabrics, especially the silks that are handwoven in the North East. One person for whom you wish to design. I would love to design for Kangana Ranaut. She is the perfect example of an Urban Princess. One wish as a designer you want to fulfil. I want to bring the textiles and motifs from my hometown Assam to the mainstream. It would make me feel very proud to see people all over the world wearing and loving the fabrics of Assam.

Mandana Karimi

On her Journey! iCraze | March 2016 | 30

The beautiful Iranian lady quips more about her life. Zeba Khan listens.

F

rom Tehran to India her journey wasn’t easy; Mandana Karimi was born and brought up in a conservative Muslim family but she stood high and landed in India to persue her modelling career. Apart from the commercials that she did with the leading bollywood actors like Shahrukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Shahid Kapoor and Arjun Kapoor, she made a lead debut in Bhaag Johnny. Lately, she was the 2nd runner up in the popular reality show Bigg Boss 9 and appeared in Main Aur Charles as Charles Sobraj’s assistant. The list doesn’t ends here; she took a bold step and chose to do a sexy comedy film Kya Kool Hai Hum 3. This Iranian actress and model shares more about her experiences and life. Do you remember the first time you faced the camera? Yes! When I shot for a friend's University Project. I didn't know what to do and I was guided by everyone on the set. I was really nervous and excited at the

same time. How have you been welcomed in Bollywood? People have been pretty kind to me, especially after Big Boss. They have accepted my funny ascent. I believe audiences have loved me because of my personality and not only because I am pretty or hot. How big a risk it was to chose a sex comedy for a debut film? Life isn’t fun without taking risks! Just trust your instincts. Doing a sex comedy, I don't think it was a big risk because at the end of the day I'm an actress/artist and I will have to do what the script requires. How was Bigg Boss instrumental to establish your footing in Bollywood? It hasn't helped me to establish myself in Bollywood but I have gained popularity from Big Boss. And now everyone knows who Mandana Karimi is. I have become the household name after that. Did you manage to generate a

loyal fan base via show? Oh yes! And I love my fans. They are amazing. For me it's all very new. I am enjoying the love and support. They've been very kind when I was inside the Big Boss House. You weren’t really in good books of the fellow contestants. How does that bother you? It bothered me in the beginning like the first 3weeks, but then I realised that it's just because of the competition and the game that we are playing, simply because they all knew how strong contestant I was. Also, every week after every nomination I cared less because I knew the audience wanted me to be in the show and then it didn't matter to me. Wasn’t it difficult to survive without many friends? Yes of course it wasn’t easy! But then again because I was lonely in the house I kept talking to cameras (they were my best friend) it made my connection with audience much stronger 31 | March 2016 | iCraze

iCraze Cover Story than the other housemates. What is your equation with the house inmates now? We had a screening for everyone, a few showed up and I'm friend with Kishwer and Suyyash. What was your gut feeling about the role & the film? I always wanted to do a comedy film, I knew I have to do it and it was a great chance to be part of the commercial cinema. Who are the other filmmakers or actors you would like to collaborate with in the film industry? I want to work with everyone and explore the art cinema. I hope one day I get a chance to do an action film with Akshay Kumar and definitely working with Sanjay Leela Bansali is in my wish list! What made you agree to play the role in Kya Kool Hain Hum 3? I should say hummer of the script, the cute love story and of course because it was Balaji's Production House film(Ekta kapoor) How difficult is it for a non-Indian actor to foray and establish in Hindi Film industry? For me it was easier as my father is an Indian/Iranian. But still it's not easy to start and be a part of any new place or new industry. It takes lot of hard work and it's all about how easily you can adapt to a new place. What is keeping you busy for the next few months? Interviews, Reading scripts and iCraze | March 2016 | 32

getting back to my workout routine, events, photoshoots, catching up with friends and family, catching up on movies which I have missed. Hopefully will start shooting for a film soon. Any reality show for now? Maybe! But I can't talk about it now (Winks) What’s up at the personal front? Happy space Have you ever suffered a heart break? Yes I have, when we lost our puppy. How do you deal with stress of any kind? I take a deep breath, meditation, I cook when I'm stressed it makes me really calm or I go for swimming. What keeps you going? My dreams and my prayers. Beauty ritual you swear by? Using coconut oil/water. Your workout routine? I workout with Cindy, my trainer 3 times a week, mixed of weight training and cardio . Also, I do yoga 4 times a week.

iCraze Columnist

A pioneer of Beauty

Sundra Bains Let’s find out about this energetic personality who epitomises the true essence of womanhood. Chandra Thapa from our team sat in a candid chat with Sundra Bains.

A

pioneer in the field of skin care, make up, health and beauty, Mrs Sundra Bains needs no introduction. A successful entrepreneur, who runs her own spa studio in Jaipur, is a rare example of beauty with brains. Having been involved in the wellness industry for over two decades, she has constantly kept pace with the changing trends and transformations along the way, which in turn has made her experience all the more enriched. Yet she retains iCraze | March 2016 | 34

a strong and unique style of her own, which is reflected in each of her projects. Tell us about your journey so far? I started my journey in this wonderful industry in 1988 and I underwent training by the very famous Shahnaz Husain and received a Diploma in Cosmetology and Aesthetician. I have kept pace with changing trends and upgraded my skills and techniques accordingly. This has enriched my experience. Over the time, I have developed

unique makeup expertise which is reflected in my work, especially in the areas of Bridal and Model make ups. After having so much knowledge and experience, I came up with an idea of opening my own salon and spa by the name of Sundra Bains Spa at Raja Park, Jaipur. Why beauty industry? Beauty industry is an interesting career with lots of options and challenges. This is an occupation where you can do and learn lots of different things like facial make- ups, treatment of skin

problems, experiment with hair styles, respond to personal requirements of the clients, etc. It feels gratifying to solve people’s personal problems especially when they think their situation is very difficult. I love my work because it feels good to make charming people even more beautiful and confident. What sparked in beauty industry? In our times Madam Shahnaz Husain was an inspiration for me. Her style and the standard of work always impressed me. I started by taking an International Cosmetology and Aesthetician Diploma. After that I pursued further courses to increase my horizon in the beauty industry. When I started my own business, I got an amazing response from the clients. This encouraged me even more. Gradually, I became an expert in treating skin problems and make-up became my forte. I basically followed my heart and did what I liked the most and now my hobby is my passion.

What are some of your ‘can’t live without it’ cosmetics? The most important cosmetics which I use regularly for my skin are Skin Refresher Spray by MAC, Shahlife, Shahmoist, Shahnaz Kajal and Lipstick. What is that secret weapon (product) that you use on almost every client? There is no secret weapon or any single miracle beauty product. The art and the

therapist’s ability to understand the exact clinical need of the client and focus on its solution is what I prefer. This needs patience, perseverance and skill and the friendly atmosphere in the salon. That perhaps is the ‘secret’. What would you suggest as far as the bare minimum essentials needed for a girl to carry with her on a daily basis to keep herself looking good

You always have happy, upbeat energy in you. How do you keep yourself so positive? I draw my strength from my family and friends. I stay in the company of positive people and avoid negative thoughts. Abiding optimism, maintaining a helpful attitude, positive expectations, support of my staff and family gives me the strength and energy to remain composed. Moreover, the feeling that I am constantly engaged in a constructive enterprise is a source of happiness. 35 | March 2016 | iCraze

iCraze Columnist at work? Every girl should carry a small pack of moist face tissues to clean her face to feel fresh, moisturizer to keep skin moist, Kajal to give brightness to eyes, lipstick/lipgloss, because lips tends to get dry, comb for new hair style, perfume to smell good, and most importantly a positive attitude -one should not share their combs and other cosmetics because of hygiene purpose. Q. What is the beauty regime every girl should follow? Every girl should follow the CTMP rule i.e, keep your skin Clean, Toned, Moist and Protected against the elements. Every girl should start taking care of her skin at an early age. Most young girls develop problems of the skin, pimples, falling hair, dandruff etc. because they neglect the hygienic routine. How can we prepare our skin for Holi festival? Before playing holi with colours, applying coconut oil on the face and hair will help you protect the skin from the damaging effects of Holi colours. Please try and play safe holi, avoid colour going into your eyes. What is the best way to slough off the Holi colours from skin? Some Holi colours are difficult to remove. Please don’t rub and scrub the skin again and again as it might lead to dryness and skin peeling. Curd can be used to soften the skin. Also, a paste of milk and turmeric powder can be applied for easy removal as well as nourishment. If there is itchiness, use a combination iCraze | March 2016 | 36

of glycerine with rose water on your face and rinse it with warm water. What is beauty for you? There are two kinds of beautyInner and Outer. A combination of the two makes you a beautiful person. It’s good to be good looking; however, Inner beauty plays a more vital role. A person beautiful from within will be honest, ever smiling, have a positive attitude, have no prejudice and always be there for others. All this will reflect in his/ her elegance and style. How can someone retain their natural glow? Use natural things to make the skin glow. An easy-tomake cleanser will help dissolve dead skin cells, revealing the smooth, soft skin underneath. The secret is fresh alpha hydroxy fruit acid derived from tomatoes, oranges and sugar. You need 1/4 cup of granulated sugar, a chopped fresh tomato, and orange juice and 2 tablespoons of yogurt or sour cream. Place the sugar in a small bowl. Add enough freshly-chopped tomato pieces and moisten with orange juice, then add yogurt. Combine and apply on clean damp face, using fingertips to gently massage this paste on to skin. Allow to remain on skin for 15 /20 minutes, and then rinse with warm water. Also, keep your skin hydrated by drinking lots of water and maintain

a balanced diet and exercise regularly. In terms of beauty care, how does Jaipur differ from other cities? How has Jaipur inspired ‘Sundra Bains’? Jaipur is a very beautiful city with warm people. My decision to settle here and establish my business as Sundra Bains Salon and spa was merely based on the royal ambience of the city and the warmth of its people. Jaipurites are very fond of looking good. They appreciate genuine guidance and make an effort to dress up for special occasions. This tradition is indeed inspiring.

7 skin care

tips in summer

Skin care tips as Mother Nature changes from winters to summers!!! the skin’s surface, resulting in a shiny appearance. In addition, the increase in sweat mixed with oil leaves you looking greasy. Following are things you can do to address these changes:

By Dr.Monica Kapoor (Skin Care Expert, Face Aesthetic Physician, Tricologist, Cosmetologist)

N

ot everyone’s skin responds to weather changes the same way. It’s also important to assess your skin on a regular basis to determine the changes in the skin according to weather and then adapt your skin-care routine as needed. If your skin reacts to seasonal and climate changes, this will help you maintain perfect skin in summers. Increased temperature can make oil (sebum) melt inside the pores make oil to come on

Exfoliate (salicylic acid): Depending on your skin type, exfoliate either 1-2 times a week if you’re dry or 2-3 times a week if you’re oily. Doing this will help the skin to rejuvenate, leaving it soft and brighter. Salicylic acid based products can penetrate into the pore to exfoliate built-up skin cells that clog pores and lead to breakouts and also reduces black heads. Moisturisers: Reduce the amount of creamy moisturisers or stop altogether, if you have oily skin, you really don’t need thick and creamy moisturisers. Instead, toner, gel, or serum can be used. Cleanser: During warmer months you may need to use a more thorough gel or foaming cleanser to be sure you are cleaning all the oil off your skin without adding more. Sunprotection: sun protection

is the most important part of any skin-care routine, regardless of the weather. Use matt finish ones, if u feel skin is oily .Apply sunscreen religiously. It’s a sure way of protecting your skin. Always apply sunscreen 20 minutes prior to allow time for the product to absorb into the skin; re-apply every few hours or as needed. Look for sunscreens that offer protection for both UVA and UVB rays with higher SPF. Also can use physical barrier like scarf or umbrella and if possible use clothes which cover full body. Protect your hands and feet too: Use sunscreen not only on the face but also on exposed parts of hands and legs with higher SPF (more than 30) and also lip balms with SPF for protecting lips. Toners : As the weather heats up, toners will help balance your skin’s chemicals, even out, and brighten your skin tone, so you can wear less make up to help reduce break outs and control Water: I know you’ve heard this. Seriously though, stay hydrated because your skin needs water just as much as the rest of your body does. 37 | March 2016 | iCraze

Homemade remedies for pigmentation P

By Divya Ohri, beauty expert and owner of Soham Wellness Clinic

igmentation, freckles, dark spots and uneven skin tone are few skin problems we all face. Who doesn’t want a flawless skin? Every woman feels uncomfortable to step out with even one spot on her face. Exposure to sunlight, pregnancy, use of birth control pills, health issues, stress or genes plays a vital role to

make out if you are vulnerable to skin pigmentation. Your skin color is decided by pigments known as melanin. Melanin is produced by melanocytes, specialized skin cell. Pigmentation is of two types, hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation. In hyperpigmentation, the production of melanin is high

due to which we come across tan or brown spots (melasma) on the skin. Hypopigmentation on the other hand is caused due to lowered melanin and light colored patches (vitiligo) appear. Natural remedies are slow yet effective process to get rid of skin pigmentation. Let’s have a quick look at few effective home remedies for pigmentation on the skin.

Potato: The ultimate savior Potatoes are a treasure house of vitamins, B-Complex, potassium, magnesium, zinc and phosphorus. It has inbuilt skin lightning properties. The B vitamin in potato is known for cell renewal properties, especially niacinamide, a derivative of vitamin B complex. It is a vital skin lightning agent. If you are suffering from skin pigmentation due to acne, hormones or ageing potato helps. Procedure: Cut the potatoes into slices. Rub the slice in circular motion on your skin with pigmentation for 10 minutes. If you feel the potato slice is dry, use another slice. Lemon: Best antioxidant Lemon is a rich source of vitamin C. It is known for its natural anti-oxidant properties that help to reduce melanin in your skin. Lemon consists of citric acid which is a first-rate exfoliating agent. Citric acid removes the dead cells and makes the skin look lighter and brighter. Procedure: Take tbsp of brown sugar and mix it with egg white. Add one tsp of lemon juice to it. Apple this mixture on your face and gently rub with your fingers in circular motions. Repeat this process for 10-15 minutes and wash the area applied. Papaya: For skin exfoliation Papain is an enzyme found in papaya that helps in skin exfoliation. The process of regeneration of new cells occurs when you go for a papaya treatment. The pigmented layers are removed and the thus the marks are eliminated. Gladly papaya treatment suits all skin types. Procedure: For the papaya treatment you just need papaya and nothing else. Take a ripe papaya and juice it. Apply the mixture on the pigmented area and leave it for 10 minutes. Once you find the mask dry, wash the applied skin. Repeat this process for atleast a month to see positive results. 39 | March 2016 | iCraze

Tips on how to

rug that’s easy to clean and durable, like cotton or synthetic. A patterned rug in darker shade will be able to hide dirt and stains in high-activity areas. If you want rug for a more decorative purpose, luxurious viscose, wool and leather rugs are available in rich designs and colours. Recycled fabric rugs can be opted by the more environmentally aware users. Make sure any rug or carpet you are considering eventually complements your style sense.

R

ugs and carpets are the ultimate decorative accessory; it gives warmth and personality to a space. But choosing the right rug can be a tricky business; the right one can finish a space to perfection, while the wrong one can make a room feel awkward or unfinished. But with so many styles, colours and materials to choose from, how do you know which one is right for you? It’s actually easier than you think. Here are a few ground rules to help you find the right area rug for your space

Right colour If you have colour and pattern going on in your space, you might want to stick with a single-colour, either a neutral or a shade which complements your existing furnishings. If you want a patterned rug with many shades, add in furniture and accessories that coordinate afterwards. Dark, rich colours help define a more intimate space while lighter colours make a smaller space appear larger. Bright colours such as yellow, orange or red add

warmth while cool colours like blue and green create calm. Right pattern Give yourself permission to go bold with patterns. Mixing patterns within the same colour group will add depth to your décor. While selecting complementary colours to pair with your rug just makes sure to select the non-dominate colour within the design. A brightly coloured or boldly patterned rug can just be the right step if you want to lift up your space. Bold designs and large patterns in a small room can make it look larger. Right texture A room with a combination of different textures feels layered and rich, and an easy way to set this tone is by giving attention to the texture of your rug. Let your existing décor guide you, and aim for contrast. Right comfort If you prefer a softer feel, then natural fibres such as wool and cotton are for you. If you want a deep, lush, pile, you can get a similar feel from synthetic fibres. Natural fibres such as jute can be surprisingly soft underfoot, but it’s not as warm as a woven rug.

Right styles Two of the biggest factors to consider when choosing a rug that you will love to live with are your lifestyle and your own personal style. Will you be placing your rug in a high traffic area, such as a family room or hallway? Do you have young children or pets? If yes, you will want to choose a 63 | March 2016 | iCraze

A rug should fit the size of your seating area and be as large as possible within it. The ideal situation is when all the legs of furniture are on the rug, but front-legs-only is a common practice. Right location and purpose: It is critical to keep in mind the type of activity and traffic that your rug with your existing furniture. The key is to create balance instead of clash or compete for attention. Your rug should be a focal point for your room, so sometimes it’s best to start with it when designing a room.

will take place in the room. Durable rug is needed for high traffic areas, while soft rugs can be used in the low traffic rooms. Rugs made of wool are timeless and lasting, but they are more likely to get stained. But, they can be designed intricately which makes them great for bedrooms and living rooms. Contrarily, rugs made of synthetic fabric are more affordable and easier to clean. Make them great for high traffic areas. Right material Fabrics can be broadly classified in two parts: 1. Natural fabrics: Wool and silk are more widely used Cotton, jute, hemp, etc., are more affordable option for people on a budget. They are durable and have a long life. 2. Synthetic fabrics: Polyester thermoplastics, Acrylic, Polypropylene, Nylon, Etc. They are much cheaper option and durable. There are a wide variety of affordable options available in the market. Rugs which are made of Cotton, jute, hemp and chenille are affordable and durable. Synthetic fibres are designed to mimic the look and feel of wool and other expensive materials. Right approach If you are planning on decorating any area, it is best to build a start from the floor up. Set the ambience and colour scheme by selecting the rug first. Ultimately the rug or carpet you are considering should be able to match your style. Finally, trust your instincts.

‘Let Go of Me’

T

he book ‘Let Go of Me’ is written by Ekta Saigal Pandit which talks about the two people Asmi and Sagar, who always led their lives their way and have lived it at two different extremes before they meet each other.

I would rather say the story is mysterious and talks about the connection both the characters have. The connection of soul, the connection that pulls them together into one is something which makes this book stand different from others. Their love story has a spiritual connect. The book carries a message for life and yet maintains simplicity throughout, nothing is overdone. You will definitely like the book if you like reading about unconventional love stories. iCraze | March 2016 | 68

by Chandra Thapa

Looking for true love and to fill the vacuum these two characters find each other in an unusual way. Unlike every other love story which has a happy ending, this story doesn’t have one. One becomes matured even after losing the sense of true love while the other keeps longing for it and tries to prove the righteousness.
