Maryam Zakaria on her journey from Sweden to our Hearts as Chandra Thapa listens! iCraze | May 2016 | 26
T
ime and again people have proved that passion is all that is needed to conquer your dream. Maryam Zakaria is one such person… let me correct… a passionate person, who flew to Mumbai to follow her dream to make it big in the tinsel town. Fascinated by the Indian cinema, she has grown up watching Indian masala films and mastered herself in the unique Indian dance moves. She even established a dance academy in Sweden where she takes classes on Indian ‘latkas and jhatkas’. Before moving to Bollywood, she has given many hits in the tollywood. Her recent flick ‘Grand Masti 3’ has given that much needed boost to her career in the industry. Chart something about your childhood? I was very fun loving and friendly kid. I used to participate in all the activities and loved the adventures. I love dancing and hanging out with friends. How did Bollywood happen to you? Since childhood I always had a dream to be a part of the Bollywood industry. I used to watch Hindi movies since then and I decided to follow my dreams. After I gave the auditions for Agent Vinod, I got my first break in Bollywood. From Sweden to India, how has your journey been? I was always passionate about Indian cinema ever since I was a child. Bollywood films and the actors has always been appealing to me, something I fell deeply in love with for years and always dreamt to make it a part of my life. I used to spend a lot of time watching
and connecting with the warmth and emotions of the Bollywood films and dance; I pursued it as my dream and excelled. In 2009, I moved to India, however without any knowledge or connection with the industry, life was a struggle with a lot of learning and understanding of the culture and the system. I stayed strong and had patience and worked hard. Tollywood gave me my first break with diyalo diyala song in 100% love movie. After that song I made my acting debut with Allari Naresh in Madatha Kaja. After giving hits in Tollywood’, I made my entry in Bollywood with my first acting debut in Agent Vinod starring Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor. The song ‘Dil Mera Muft Ka’ gave me a huge breakthrough in Bollywood and after that hits songs like ‘Pritam Pyare’ and ‘Nagin’ helped me establish myself more and that’s when I did my entry into Bollywood as a lead with the film ‘Grand Masti’ happened to me.
and this industry, but as time passed by I believed it to be a wonderful experience and I love India. What do you miss the most about Sweden? My family and friends. But I go there often. During monsoon, I always stay in Sweden. You have appeared in numerous Telugu movies, how was your experience there? It was an amazing experience and I love to work in Telugu films. In fact, Telugu gave me my first break in the Indian cinema.
How difficult it was to fit into a socio- culturally different environment at the beginning? It took me some time to understand the life in India 27 | May 2016 | iCraze
iCraze Fashion An incident from your early days in India that is close to your heart & you want to share. The moment when I got a call from the team that I got selected for Agent Vinod. I was really happy as I was about to do my first Bollywood movie with the leading actors and work with my dream choreographer Saroj Khan. How would you sum up your journey so far in the Indian Cinema? It has been an amazing journey so far, I have learned so much, met a lot of great people and talent. I am looking forward for more exciting work and new experiences. What fascinates you about Bollywood dance form? Bollywood dancing is an exotic and exciting way of getting your body fit and healthy. It offers a fun and expressive workout, incorporating classical, folk and funk styles of dance. Bollywood dancing is an expressive form of movement based around the popular Indian film genre. Fusing classical Indian steps with folk, Latin and hip-hop styles, it offers a fast-moving and vivacious dancing workout that is great for enjoyable group exercise. Your dream role. I have couple of them in my mind. I am a huge fan of Madhuri Dixit and I loved her roles in the films like ‘Dil Toh Pagal Hai’, ‘Devdas’ and ‘Hum Aap Ke Hain Kaun’. I would love to do these kinds of roles. Will they ever make ‘Dil Toh Pagal Hai 2’? (Laughs) I would love to do it. Your favourite actor. iCraze | May 2016 | 28

ashion is something everyone wants to follow. With technology at our finger tips little do we realize how convenient it has made our lives. One would normally go to a shop, pick the fabric, look for designs and finally go to a tailor to get the outfit stitched according to one’s taste and fancy. But with life moving at jet speed and things getting more complicated one would prefer getting an outfit without too much stress. There is no doubt that shopping for clothes in a brick and mortar gives you the choice to feel and touch the fabric but that doesn’t solve the problem completely. One may have a particular kind of fabric, color, style or even embroidery in mind and may not be able to have it to their hearts content.

Brands these days have come up with customization. It could be customization of an outfit to customization of jewelry. Customization creates a bond, a connection between the brand and the consumer. Brands become more aware of the needs and taste of their customer which in turn helps to create more
awareness for the brand. Also a brand can end up creating a unique outfit for their customer. Especially, for ethnic wear draping a saree can be cumbersome for a novice and if this sarees customized and pre-stitched it makes it more wearable. Especially, customization in blouses gives the customer the desired look that one wants and thus enhances the exclusivity, fit and comfort factor. The digital age has made customization more accessible and feasible. Customers look forward to making creations that suits their taste. So now not only selecting the fabric, color, embroidery, style, price, size all this can be achieved to get the desired outfit one wants. Customization ends up giving a person a look that they have in their mind for their desired outfit. you want it also gives you value for your money. It creates exclusivity which makes one feel satisfied for the money they may have spent in getting what they desire. Because a customer has got value for his money she will surely want to come back to the brand to have more of the products that she wants. This in return is a win – win situation for both the customer and the brand as both benefit out of it. ith summer in full swing, we rely on light fabrics, cool colours and breezy silhouettes. What better way to savour the warm weather days than in a feminine, easyto-style skirt. This season, skirts seem to have a very strong ‘70s influence - midi skirts, corduroy skirts with buttoned fronts and A-line pleated skirts all seem to gaining popularity this season, more so than their shorter counterparts. Fitted, body-con shapes are huge right now, but maybe you’re more of a pleated mini girl? Or are knit A-line silhouettes more your thing? Here are some skirt silhouettes that are all the rage this season. iCraze | May 2016 | 34
1. The midi skirts This season the midi skirt
seems to be the length all fashionistas prefer. If you feel like you don’t have the legs to wear a mini, or can’t bear to wear a maxi in the warmer months, the midi skirt is your go-to. The midi skirt is best worn with heels and your favourite crop top. But whichever way you decide to style your skirt, just make sure it’s a midi.
to utilitarian wraps and front-knotted, zipped, and buttoned, these ‘90s staples have seen a resurgence. 6. The pencil skirt Your perfect day-to-night companion, the pencil skirt is a silhouette that never seems to go out of fashion. Now in sturdier, edgier fabrics like leather, velvet and denim, this flattering silhouette has been popular on the runway and off it. So which skirt do you prefer this season?
2. The trumpet skirt The mermaid or trumpet skirts have become incredibly popular in the past seasons. These sophisticated skirts are distinguished by the fact that they sit perfectly on the hips and flare at the bottom providing the wearer with a curvaceous, hourglass silhouette. 3. The flared skirts Flared, A-line silhouettes are in great demand. Designers used light fabrics like tulle, several layers of chiffon and mesh to give it a fluffier shape, a shape that has gained popularity over the seasons. 4. The asymmetric skirt The asymmetric hem is
another trend of the season. Asymmetric skirts can be paired with something as formal as a shirt to something as casual as a T-shirt. They have also been occasionally called “mullet skirts due to their lopsided shape. 5. The mini skirt While some trends come and go, a few remain. The mini skirt is a wardrobe staple and has been revived this season with different cuts and fabrics. From simple A-lines 35 | May 2016 | iCraze

utdoor activities on the beach and around swimming pools drain water from the body, especially during summer months when the temperature is high and humidity is low. Some precautions are necessary to prevent body dehydration, skin burns and hair damage. Summers can play havoc on our body, hair and face. make a conscious effort to increase intake of liquids. If you find it difficult to drink plain water then flavor it by adding seasonal freshly cut fruits of your choice like orange, apple, strawberry, watermelon, grapes etc. Lemon, clove, ginger, mint, coriander leaves, cucumber slices can also be used to make the drink tasty and refreshing. A glass of butter milk mixed with 1 tsp crushed mint is an excellent body coolant. Coconut water taken on an empty stomach provides sodium, potassium, magnesium help maintain salt levels in the body. Iced tea or cold coffee is also a good idea. Staying hydrated does wonders for your complexion, especially in the summer months. 2. A quick shower before entering the pool hydrates

the upper layer of the dermis and minimizes absorption of chemicals in the chlorinated water generally found in swimming pools. 3. Pre Rinsing your hair with fresh water reduces soaking up of chemicals present in the pool water thereby preventing chemical damage of the hair. 4. Ultra violet rays and chemicals/ salt in water can harm your skin. Make sure that your skin is well protected when you enter the pool. This could be achieved by applying a ‘water proof “sun screen while basking in the sun or
before entering the pool / sea. Use a lotion with an SPF 30 or above. The sun screen lotion will not only protect you from the harmful rays of the sun, but will also prove effective against the chlorine/ salt present in the water. Take care to apply the lotion on all exposed parts of the body and let it dry before you expose yourself to sun or water. Post care of the skin after leaving pool/beach Those who have sensitive or acne prone skin should ensure a body bath, using a mild soap, when u get out of the pool. Thereafter, it is very important to apply a good moisturizer, as water and salt rob the body of its moisture content. Going back in times is a quest for many people who simply refuse to age gracefully. The treatments available in form of Botox, wrinkle creams and other cosmetic products can hide the visible signs of ageing. But what about your inner self? Are there ways we can beat the clock for life and remain healthy and feel young foreve. One is too busy nowadays or generally lazy when it comes to exercise, but somehow one has to manage to look after wellness. Also, gym routines and personal coaches for yoga and functional training several time don’t excite many people. As a result, they fail miserably to keep up to that routine at times and tend to miss most of the sessions after a hectic schedule to keep up with their day to day life. Rachna Sharma, A life Strategist, Speaker and a Philanthropist gives out tips for those who still want to be fit and healthy, collation of her experiences over a few years. Identify and focus on where you want to focus at. It’s not easy to just get to Madonna stage so easy. So, start one by one. WALK / Brisk Walk / Run if you can any time during the day for 20 - 30 Minutes. At Garden or Office Premises anywhere you find time. That’s not too much to ask for? Start from your face, most of us have problems with double chins and sagging skin - There are few exercises like tongue press that can help you to get rid of double chin. This exercise tightens the muscles in your chin and slowly makes the
double chin disappear. Also rotate your neck at least twice a day as neck’s muscles get loose due to lack of exercise. This leads to accumulation of fat in your chin area. This can be done every time you are travelling in cars or sitting alone in your office cabin - FIVE minutes everyday. Focus on arms / shoulders anytime in office / home, just dedicate ten minutes everyday for reflex muscles. Now that’s easy. Belly Fat - Deep breathing, walking, Jogging and Swimming works as good abdominal exercises to lose belly fat. You can do the basic pranayam exercises used frequently in yoga as well. You need to spend at least 10 to 20 minutes on this exercise every day, helps big time.
When you go out, look for water than colas and coffees, make it a habit. If you can limit alcohol intake nothing like it. Replace that with green tea. Go low on Breads & Rice binge on vegetables, lentils and meat instead. Different times, different exercises, don’t take it as a routine. These can be done anywhere ,anytime as they are not time consuming and one can Keep doing these simple exercises. There is no change that happens over night but there is still a change that takes place. Few weeks you will be able to see that change. As years pass by, you will stay younger and healthier and with just so little effort.
Suryanamaskars - In the mornings when you wake up, just ten or twenty times each morning, Suryanamaskar is best for full body stretch. This practice resolves stomach issues as well. If you are lazy, post work evenings will do too. You don’t have to do all of this together, find time throughout the day whenever you can. 53 | May 2016 | iCraze

iCraze Spiritual
A bodhisattva way of life! ver since I am driving my senses, I have seen beautiful environment around me. I am blessed with caring and loving parents and supportive friends. But despite of having positivity shielding us, things tends to go wrong. Either we face hardships choosing our career, workplace, relationships or other external or internal factors controlling our life state. Take an example of students committing suicide just because they couldn’t make it to IITs, AIIMS or IIMs. How painful it is? What circumstances make us quit such a precious life? It is literally like committing a sin. Everybody is unique in this world, nobody is superior or inferior. The only thing is that some realizes their potential and make maximum use of it while others tie themselves to the outer environment and let it control their life. Taking birth as a human being is rarest of the rare. A person can only be great by quality of his deeds he performs and not by the amount of wealth accumulated by him. Today we are in the era where iCraze | May 2016 | 60
our needs and desires are kissing sky. Yes, materialistic things are dear to us but our state of mind should to be strong enough to let the worldly desires be at bay. Only then we can attain peace and contentment. If we desire for a better salary we must also keep in mind those who are struggling to earn their share of bread and butter. News channels nowadays are filled with reports of murder, rapes, and loots. The crime rate is soaring high. We all wonder why is thishappening. What can be the possible reason for civilized men turning savage like primitives? Or consider the other evils prevailing in our society like hatred, jealously, greed and lust. How can be away from these? Every mortal being in this world is tied up with the force that is invisible but it’s omnipresent. ‘Karma’ is the essence of all the living being in this world. Whatever goes comes back is the saying we all have grown up hearing. The Karmas of our past keeps transferring into the net life and the chain goes on and on till we
attain salvation from this mortal world. Take an account from the “Sree Ramacharitmanas”, in which Lord Ram took birth as a king in “Treta Yuga”. He is considered to the supreme almighty who took birth as a human but even he also had to face the wrath of his Karamas during his period of exile. According to the epic, during his fourteen years of exile, he killed “Bali” just because his friend “Sugreeva” was assaulted by “Bali”. He had no personal grudge with “Bali”. Now in “Dwapar yuga”, when he took birth as “Lord Krishna”, he completed his motive of life and one day was sleeping under a tree. A hunter named “Jara” was passing by; Jara misunderstood the foot of Krishna as a lurking deer and shot a lethal arrow that pierced into Krishna’s feet. Jara was Bali in previous life and it was the impact of Karmas which the almighty himself faced. So even the mythological Gods were not released from the circle of Karmas. Remember, the God may forgive you but Karmas never do so.

Gautam Buddha took birth during Vedic era, around 2,500 years back in “Shakya Dynasty”. Buddha evidenced four universal sufferings; birth, aging, sickness and death. He would have enjoyed his life being a king but he left his castle in quest to attain enlightenment and overcome these sufferings, thus was called “Shakyamuni”. Buddha preached his teachings in the form of sutras which are around 80,000 but after getting enlightenment under ‘boddhi tree’ he taught his final and supreme teaching which is called “The Lotus Sutra”(SaddharmaPundarika Sutra in Sanskrit). His teachings started spreading in whole of Jambudvipa(World). During 12th century in Japan, a saint named Nichiren Daishonin declared Sutra Lotus to be the supreme teaching of Buddha which would work like a medicine for humans during the latter day of the law (Kaliyuga: the age of suffering). He prefixed “Nam” to the title of the Lotus sutra thus makes it “Nam Myoho Renge Kyo” which literally means ‘I devote myself to this mystic law’. Nichiren Daishonin was attacked number of times and later exiled to Sado Island by the government authorities for preaching Lotus Sutra but he continued to motivate his disciples and kept writing letters to them as addressing solutions their problems. He was determined to change the fate of humanity so that people in the age of suffering could feel immense joy. Today this sutra is been practiced by an NGO named Soka Gakkai International with 12 million active members in 192 countries and territories. The organization is headed by its third founding president Dr. Daisaku Ikeda. Dr. Ikeda has received 300 academic honors including honorary doctorates and presently striving hard to set up world peace and continuously in talks with United
Nations to ban nuclear weapons. The three pillars of this beautiful philosophy are faith practice and study. The members of SGI gather in a number of 30-40 and chant vigorously to attain absolute happiness; they sing songs and share their stories of victory that they achieve by chanting “Nam Myoho Renge Kyo”. Anyone can chant “Nam Myoho Renge Kyo” on every day basis which brings unimaginable benefits. Members of SGI testify that this mantra is a therapy as when these four words are chanted, give off such spiritual vibrations that one’s outlook of the world itself shows positive change. By reciting this sutra one undergoes human revolution as they change their negative Karmas to positive ones and also create great value to the society by praying for others. The chant is so mystic that it helps soothe troubled minds, removing the veneer of suffering, grief, hardships and pain. We not only find peace, courage and compassion but also become able to discard our negative karmas and shine through like polished gold. Through chanting, one summons up the Buddha nature and activates the hidden potential to challenge our day to day struggles. Therefore, it eradicates all fears and doubts clouding our mind and causing us to lose focus from our goals. It makes us compassionate and courageous and so strong from inside which leads to immense growth in our image as a good human being. We are human beings with so many desires which we wish to achieve; it can be money, a better job, can be family peace or could be relationships. Moreover this is just a practice and not religion; in fact one starts respecting his/ her religion more after joining this practice. SGI has members from different cultures and religions
which makes it a practice of unity and friendship and thus different from other practices. Nichiren Daishonin says, “Chant earnestly with full faith and having seeking spirit, what sickness can therefore be an obstacle” Considering above problems, I think the time has come when we really need to work upon present life so that we can have better future. We need to undergo a deep human revolution So that we can understand the motive of life. We must start thinking of limited resources we have got from Mother Nature so that we can pass happiness and healthy environment to coming generations. The outer environment is like a mirror, if we smile, we get smile in return and if we show anger we get anger. In order to break the chain of bad karmas we must gain good karmas. We may say that we are earning a good amount of money and living a happy life so we do not need to chant but what value are we creating to the society is what matters the most, we may be happy for now but can somebody guarantee us that we will be happy in future as well So it’s better to prepare our self for challenges, lets beat our negative karmas and shine like morning sun. Shakyamuni would have lead his life like a King but his concern was eradicating the misery and sufferings from this world, he exerted from his comfort zone and end up passing such precious Sutra for the people of present era who need it the most. Everyone should take up this beautiful philosophy and especially youth in order to achieve absolute happiness, peace and compassion and makes our heart like lion king to tackle each and every challenge in life, that’s what you call a Bodhisattva way of life. 61 | May 2016 | iCraze
