The popularity of Tea drinking throughout the 18th and 19th centuries drove the demand for luxury tea drinking equipment. Tea caddies are often seen lavishly decorated in fine materieals reflecting the importance and expense of tea within society. Indeed the taking of tea was an event and was rightly celebrated. In the Dutch Tea drinkers arsenal, there would have been boxes such as this fine example
which is fully equipped in silver with twelve teaspoons, five coffee spoons, a associated tea strainer and silver sugar tongs.

IDHOME DUNHILL AQUARIUM TABLE LIGHTER A very fine Dunhill Aquarium Table Lighter, the top with raisable arm stamped Dunhill, above the lucite body carved with tropical fish scenes. The panels are all well composed and colourful. The metal mounts are all gold plated. Length 4in 10cm Ben Shillingford worked for Dunhill in the 1950’s, he perfected the art of carving and painting lucite panels to resemble miniature aquariums, these panels were then applied to the lighter bodies in four sections. Lucite was developed in world war II and used by the American and royal airforce as an alternative to glass which would shatter when under fire. Following the war, the lucite that remained was eagerly sought by artists, designers and Jewellery makers. It could be carved and painted, resulting in highly decorative shiny objet d’art. Each Dunhill Aquarium lighter is unique, having been hand made the decoration of each varies considerably.

> THE STORMING OF THE BASTILLE A phenominaly rare rolled paper picture depicting the storming of the Paris Bastille of 1789. In a remarkable state of preservation, retaining much of the original vivid colouration. The attention to detail is truely exceptional, each roll of paper being approximatly 1/2 inch long and carefully positioned to make up this staggeringly complex arrangement. France, circa 1795 Unframed 25in 64cm x 18in 46cm Throughout the 18th century, past-times such as embroidery and needlework were popular among society ladies. Women could fill their spare time
in the relative warmth of a salon and talk together whilst working on embroidery patterns or needlework scenes for their own amusement. A less well known decorative phenomenon was rolled paper work or filigree paper work which flourished in popularity towards the end of the 18th century. Numerous kits were developed by enterprising firms for ladies to decorate tea caddies, boxes or pictures. In 1791, a royal tradesman, Charles Elliott, supplied Princess Elizabeth, with “15 ounces of different filigree paper, one ounce of gold paper, and a box made for filigree work with ebony moldings, lock and key, lined inside and outside and also a tea cadde to correspond with box”. The art of rolled paper filigree
work was indeed a hard and demanding one to master. It was considered so important for a lady to learn that it was actually taught at school, and is recorded in period literature such as Jane Austin’s’ Sense and Sensibility. Lucy Steel is noted rolling papers for a decorative basket that she was working on.
