Perry World House
University of Pennsylvania
1100 Architect
Project duration: April 2014-June 2016
Project size: 17,000 SF
Role: Designer
The Perry World House creates a gathering place where Penn students and faculty engage with eminent international scholars and policymakers on pressing global issues of the 21st century. As a hub for international exchange and activity, the Perry World House anchors Penn’s global resources on an interdisciplinary campus while creating partnerships abroad.
Perry World House’s central initiative, The Global Solutions Program, brings eminent scholars and policy makers together to work on solving pervasive international challenges. It also hosts symposia, conferences, and speakers’ series, conducts outreach on a different issue each year, and offers students a variety of new learning opportunities.
Program
The World Forum, a central meeting place, can accommodate 150 guests for important lectures and special events. In addition, the building program includes a 25-30 student classroom, a 40 person conference room, and a flex-space with a seating capacity of 50, as well as 14 offices for program directors, visiting scholars and staff A welcoming forecourt along Locust Walk provides a landscaped outdoor gathering space.

Building Information Modeling
In order to maximize net usable space, the design team used BIM, to precisely plan and coordinate the building’s MEP systems, locating them efficiently along the north and east quadrants of the building. In addition to increasing the amount of usable space, this also maximized ceiling heights and allowed the west side of the building to be free of any vertical ductwork, which makes the World Forum — a double height atrium with a glass roof — possible.

Stone Anchor
To avoid visible expansion joints on facade, each stone is designed to be hung independently to allow expansion and contraction. Joints between stones are sealed with sealant with backer rod to allow such movements. Corners are quirk mitered fabricated in shops. Mitered stones obscure the thickness of stones and helped to achieve the illusion of a giant piece of craved stone.

Global Policy Lab
At the heart of the lower level is the Global Policy Lab, a multi-use collaborative space envisioned as a place where academics, leaders, and activists can come together to address policy issues. Large windows open the space to 38th Street, creating a close connection between the building and its context. Interior windows between the lower level and the main level create cohesive, interconnected spaces.
The bridge is a hung structure by 2x2 steel columns situation behind mullions of curtain wall system. The columns below the bridge on the other hand, are gravity loaded columns that carry weight into concrete foundation.

St Aldate Mixed Use Development
Retail ground floor and residential above
Involved project duration: Design Development
Role: Assistant Architect
Responsibilities: Design and Drafting
Located at the center of Oxford, from St Aldate’s Tavern Archway to Queen’s Street. The scheme aims to produce a framework of routes and corridors to connect this unattractive backwater in the prime city center. New retail units, City Council offices and student accommodation will be provided.
Roofscape and streetscape are elements that require high regard of respect in a well preserved historic city like Oxford, and have become a major drive in articulating the design.
The stepped streetscape leads to the notion of ‘stepped rotated cubes’ on the facade facing St Aldate’s, and the response to Oxford Datum contributes to the irregular heights of each roof.
Above the retail and office units are student ‘clusters’ that eventually lends itself to an interesting amalgamation of small punctuated roofscape, which is going to add to the visual interest of Oxford roofscape. Part of the roofscape is allocated to the roof garden which forms the center of student community space.

The proposed 65 unit affordable housing project situated in the village of Irvington, NY. Due to the natural slope occur on site, the 3-story high complex has to be stepped multiple times to create accessible acesss to all parts of the block. The design concept is to utilize the subdivision of these steps to break down the long building mass into a scale that is more imtimate and provide a sense community. Different materials and roofing geometries also are used to create the preception of row houses and reinforce the concept.
