Predictions from a very fake psychic

I

I thought it might be a good idea to start out the new year with some predictions for 2016, maybe some forecasts about the family from experts in family-related topics. I started out googling the somewhat vague “predictions for 2016.” I really didn’t think that through enough. Up came sites where psychics are in the business of looking into...I don’t know...crystal balls or something and revealing what they see. Some of their predictions were a little obvious, such as: “It’s going to be very cold this winter.” Really? A cold winter? Who’da thunk?

One group of psychics did predict the winner of the 2016 presidential election. I won’t tell you what they said; it may or may not come true, and you can just wait and see for yourself. I’m pretty sure of this: like all presidential elections, some people will be dismayed and others will be elated by the psychics’ prediction, should it come to pass.

I don’t believe in psychics myself, and pretty much the other people involved in making predictions were economists or tech gurus, so I decided to come up with some family-related predictions of my own.

• In 2015, China changed its one-child-only policy but will continue to reap the adverse effects of that unfortunate, decades-old law for years to come, including 2016. Combining a one-child policy with the ability to make gender selection decisions about your baby has left China with a huge gender gap; there are now around 33 million more young males in the country than there are young females — a figure that comes close to the entire population of Canada. I guess some sexist types would find that a positive; but apparently The Little Emperors, as they are called, are unable to find spouses once they come of age. That has led to some instances of trafficking of young females from other Asian countries. Situations like this are why I’m one of the strictest “don’t mess with nature” types.

• The size of the average American family won’t change — at least, it won’t get smaller than its 2.58 members (according to the U.S. Census). It could get larger in other than numerical ways, as the modern American family continues to gnaw its way to scale-busting proportions with its typically bad eating habits. In 2016, some people are going to get so big, several of them actually explode. I may be one of them.

• More older parents will be moving in with their adult children. Actually, this is a real trend. It has even been given a name, though the name hasn’t entirely become a cultural catchphrase as yet: boomerang parents. It’s the opposite of boomerang kids, who move back in with their parents at some point after leaving the nest.

Boomerang parents is a concept I approve of. In many countries around the world, aging parents frequently live with their grownup children. The older folks add a great deal to the household, caring for young children, etc., and they get the benefit of being looked after as well, as they age.

• A whole new style of parenting will pop up this year. It won’t be called any of these: helicopter, free range, push parenting, or tiger something. It will be known literally as style parenting, as more and more moms and dads flirt with their own sense of what they think looks cool and hip without caring what their teenagers say about it.

• Families will be just as important as ever to the fabric of American life. They’ll create and nurture new life, and little children born this year will see some phenomenal things in their future — hopefully most of them good. Since they could live until 2080 and beyond, I decided to see what futurist visionaries had to say about life in the latter part of the decade.

Here are some highlights, most of them not entirely unbelievable, considering current trends.

• What is your permission number for drinking water?

• Do you consider yourself a homo sapiens, homo cyberneticus, homo hybridus, or homo machinus?

Some prognosticators envisioned hyper-intelligent computers, law enforcement androids, a global currency, and the extinction of polar bears (http://www.futuretimeline.net/ 21stcentury/2080-2089.htm#.VkzdgEZjjZl).

Many distant-future predictions were a bit scary, and often, predictors appear inclined to see the worst of things. People always seem a little unsettled by looking far, far ahead in time.

Writers and filmmakers have given us 1984; 2001: A Space Odyssey; Brave New World; and Total Recall — each with very dim views of life on earth in some futuristic setting. If I were a philosopher, or even someone just a little bit smart, I might speculate as to why the far-off future frightens people. The future may, after all, be better than today.

I’m only trying to see what 2016 may hold, and it isn’t scary.

It has hope and faith, and if unfortunate things happen — as they will — we’ll have our families to lean on. n Gaye Bunderson, Editor

SELF-defense

It’s so important, it has its own month

By Prof. Keith Owen Note: January is National Personal Self-Defense Awareness Month, a month set aside each year to help raise awareness of the importance for both children and adults to learn to defend themselves. The following article explains why.

As a professional martial arts instructor, I have seen a profound shift in the thought processes of most adults, whether they are martial arts parents or students. Self-defense appears not to be as important in their choice concerning martial arts training anymore. People learn the martial arts for various reasons, and typically, self-defense is now way down on their list. It’s unfortunate because learning to legitimately protect oneself gives a person peace of mind in knowing that they are capable of defending themselves, as well as handling many other issues that arise in their personal life.

We live in an age where now there is a clear “no touch” policy at schools, where students will be expelled for fighting.

School administrators wrongly believe that this has somehow solved the problem concerning student differences, when in fact, it has made bullying even more pervasive because bullies now know that many victims don’t want “vice principle trouble”; so, the victim typically won’t fight back and will opt to just internally deal with a bully’s quiet aggression in hopes it goes away.

Administrators now mistake quiet for peace. They don’t realize that fighting is a symptom of the problem and not the

root cause. They have treated the symptom (fighting), and it unintentionally benefits school administrators who now have less to deal with concerning the “coming to terms” that many students may need to engage in to deal with their juvenile difficulties. Children fight because they frequently feel they have exhausted all of their options, and as humans (and bullies) we are psychologically programmed to respect others who are willing to stand up for themselves, even if the bully can “beat them up.” In this day and age, if the student tells on the bully (which is looked on as snitching) and nothing gets done by school staff, what recourse does the victim have?

As adults, we have been programmed to just call the police and let them handle our problem for us, not realizing that when seconds count, the police are minutes away. People don’t understand that law enforcement comes to enforce broken laws and not necessarily to prevent a crime upon the victim — because they just can’t get there in time.

Self-defense is good for two things: to ensure physical AND emotional well-being. We understand the physical part of this equation very well. We fight off a person attacking us. We still live in a violent society where in many places a person can be mugged, robbed, home invaded, etc. We can never choose when and where we will have to defend ourselves. It just happens, and many unprepared victims simply stand there and try to make sense of, “Why is this happening to me?”

Theater classes teach life skills to youth

By Gaye Bunderson Dwayne Blackaller began working as Boise Contemporary Theater’s Youth Theater Education director six years ago and finds the plays written by the youth in BCT’s programs to be of exceptional quality.

“I’m not exaggerating or being hyperbolic, but these plays are astonishing,” Blackaller said.

Blackaller has been making a living as an actor, director and playwright far from either New York or Los Angeles. He has fulfilled his career goals in Idaho’s capital city. “Boise is very friendly to the arts,” he said.

He isn’t any sort of itinerant actor or scribe in search of a stage. He holds a bachelor’s degree in creative writing and a master’s in performance from Ohio State University, so his eye for talent is well-honed, and he sees a lot of talent in local youngsters.

As Youth Theater Education director, he oversees BCT’s Theater Labs and Children’s Reading Series. “BCT’s mission,” he said, “is to create theater that invites us all to imagine something new. My job supplements and fulfills that mission with young people.”

to express their personal voice,” Blackaller said. “In collaborative arts, a big issue is problem solving: scientific, business, and community problem solving. Students who take the labs are better citizens and problem solvers.”

In talking about the emphasis on STEM education for youth — or Science, Technology, Engineering and Math — and how it now includes an emphasis on the arts as well (making the acronym STEAM), Blackaller said: “It’s worth noting that every great thinker, including Einstein, made art a part of their lives.”

In fact Einstein frequently mentioned the value of creativity and imagination, making such statements as, “The greatest scientists are artists as well. … I am enough of an artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.”

Class size for Theater Lab is limited to 11 students, ages 12-18, with one teacher and one assistant for every class. The lab is held after school and is intensive, according to Blackaller. “We want to offer the highest quality theater education possible,” he said.

$450 for the 10-week program, and scholarships are available.

There is an audition process, and students chosen for the lab work to create an hour-long play from scratch. During the recent fall program, they created and performed three new plays. “We hold our students to high standards. I’m always astonished at the way they create,” he said. (See sidebar for play synopses.)

Though the fall lab is over, there will be a new lab this spring.

Another youth program of Boise Contemporary Theater is its Children’s Reading Series, now in full swing. BCT artists don’t just read children’s stories to an audience of parents and kids. “They embellish them with music, action and costume props,” said Blackaller, explaining that may include puppets and musicians performing silly songs with guitars and mandolins.

He gives a shout-out to his fellow performers, including his collaborator and associate artist Tracy Sutherland, whom he calls “an exceptional professional.” Sutherland has received international attention for her plays, he said.

Sunderland and Blackaller collaborated on the play S.A.D. (Spooky Action at a Distance), which will be performed March 20.

In all, nine professionals work on each Children’s Reading Series performance, and 200 family members routinely show up for the shows. It’s a full performance in front of a full house.

Following the readings, children are welcome to come meet the artists, talk to them, peek at the sets, and ask questions.

An outreach of BCT’s Youth Theater Education program is in-school and after-school workshops on school campuses, such as Boise and Borah high schools and Sage International School. The goal is to reach kindergarten through high school youth with the wonder of theater. “We’re partnering throughout the community so everyone has a chance (to see and participate in theater), to invite us all to imagine something new,” said Blackaller.

“This is something I love. I tell my students: find what you love, work really hard at it, and you can make a living at it,” he said. n

Front door focus helps your curb appeal

By Irene Woodworth Did you know that your front entry is one of the most forgotten and overlooked spaces in your home? How does it make your guests feel? Do they feel welcome or unwelcome?

Can you tell who lives in the home? Does Plain Jane live there or Creative Cathy? What kind of decorating style is reflected there? Are you earthy, contemporary or just a little bit of an eclectic type of person?

We are going to explore some possibilities for this overlooked space and how you can enhance it no matter how simple it might be. You can improve this forgotten area that will make you and your visitors feel welcomed at the front door. Realtors know about this and call it “curb appeal.”

Here is a simple exercise that just takes a few minutes. Start by going to your curb; view your front entrance and take an objective look around. Is there unsightly trash or dead leaves that need to be raked in your yard? How about the sidewalks or brick? Are they old and faded and in need of some simple sprucing up? You can pressure wash them along with your siding to freshen things up. If you do not have a pressure washer, you can rent one from lawn and garden centers or a rental business in your area. You will be amazed what a difference a little elbow grease can make in giving your home a simple uplift.

Tips for creating curb appeal

1. Front door: What color and style is it? Does it just blend in with your house paint and look pale in comparison? Or does it stand out with a wonderful contrasting and

vibrant color like red, orange, yellow, green, blue, or purple?

Go visit a Habitat for Humanity in your area and you will be surprised what you will find. Depending on your likes and dislikes there is always a wonderful alternative to give your space a gift with the lift.

2. How does your door’s hardware look? This includes the front doorknob or latch, house numbers, doorbell and doorknocker. Are they faded, scratched or worn out? You can peruse various expensive catalogues and find some amazing hardware if you would like. Consider this: do you want to add the latest trendy color such as brushed nickel, oil rubbed bronze, or perhaps you have the older brass-looking type hardware? If you are on a limited budget, you could take all your hardware off and repaint it in the color of your choice, like we did a few years ago in a black matte finish. I finally got my desire and found a simple but classic design at a home improvement center and redid the front door hardware.

It is now easy to open and close my front door, for our family and visitors alike. And it is beautiful and accents our door with a classic style. I feel so good when I see that newer piece of hardware ready to greet our guests.

3. How is the lighting? Is it dark and dreary? Or does it feel safe and lighted even on the darkest nights? It is wonderful having the solar lights that are easy to install and reuse the energy collected during the day and shine through the night.

No matter what type of lighting you have on your walkway, front door and garage door fixtures, they should all match and be in the same or similar type of style and finish. This really enhances a space.

in your neighborhood. You can also make a wise investment and hire a landscape architect or landscaper who has done some yards you like in your neighborhood. Your neighbors will not mind sharing this advice with you. If your yard looks nice, their yard will look just as nice. Container gardening is inexpensive and brings such a pop of needed color that enhances everything else by your entrance. Another idea is to check out ideas on Pinterest. You are only limited by your imaginations.

8. Accessorize your entry. You can add a seasonal wreath you can change out as the holidays come and go. I like to use a seasonal flag I post out by our entryway. It really helps when I give directions and use it as a signpost for visitors. It adds cheer and color that enhances our entry. Or you may have a birdhouse or metal signs or architecture metal artwork that can enhance your style.

9. Another idea for you is keep your ears and eyes open for local nurseries that have seasonal “how to” classes. They include classes on what to grow in your region or zone, easy container gardening, and learning how to maintain your landscape. When you invest in these classes, realize you will learn how to keep the beauty going for that cultivated curb appeal. When I was a design student, I excelled in my lighting course because I was very sensitive to how lighting works for the young and old alike. Another thing to consider is seniors sometimes come to visit, whether it is your parents, a family member or a neighbor. Lighting is crucial to prevent further accidents with a misstep in a darkened walkway or step. So, turn on the switch and put the lights on to make it easy for your guests to get to your front door.

4. How is the seating in your front door area? If you have a roomier entry area, you could put a small loveseat there with wonderful colored cushions to match the season or your mood. Old-fashioned rocking chairs are also another type of welcoming seating for anyone to stop by and sit for a spell. Or perhaps the entry area is so small you can only fit a small chair with a small side table for packages to be left, or for someone to set their drinks on during hot summer days.

5. The floor mat will set the tone on your style in a small and stylish way. The textures, colors and designs are endless. There are many resources that are budget-friendly that will really enhance your entry. You can select colorful stylish mats in all kinds of designs and textures. There are several budget-friendly stores, department stores and home improvement centers that carry them. I have found some interesting floor mats at various nursery or garden centers.

You can even find them online in such a variety of colors and styles.

6. Concentrate on your entry flowers and shrubs. I am not blessed with a green gardening thumb. I have friends who are so amazing when it comes to their landscape. For those of us who are “gardening challenged” there is hope, always some hope. You can do container gardening and it is not so labor intensive. There are even little glass bulbs that you can fill with water to nourish your flowers as needed.

When the water runs low, you just refill the bulb. You can use the infamous “drip system” that attaches to your garden hose and just distributes the water drip by drip.

7. Examine your shrubs. Perhaps they are too big and need to be trimmed back, or maybe you need a more low maintenance type. Of course you can watch some of the home and garden shows and get some landscaping advice, go on the Internet, or ask at your local nursery or garden center

FUN family dinners

Combine meal planning with imagination

By Mary Ann Wilcox After the hassle and hustle of the Christmas season, not to mention the cost, it is good to pare things down and enjoy activities at home that take little planning, little preparation and little money. We have found that special family dinners fill that bill and become traditions that children and grandchildren look forward to every year. Here are some of our favorites that your family might enjoy.

Sunday meals: Sunday dinner has always been a special meal with our family. It is usually a meat-based oven meal that can be put on before church and eaten several hours later with little preparation. It is also the only meal during the week where dessert is served. That in itself makes it special. Instead of doing a large dinner on Sundays, other families I know have a Sunday brunch or breakfast for dinner. Barbecues are great when the weather is good and you can eat outside. If everyone brings a little something to share, it makes getting together and reconnecting as a family easy and enjoyable work.

Object dinner: This is one of our family’s favorite activities. We hold it in January every year. It is really fun, a lot of laughs and other than washing lots of large dishes, little work.

The main idea behind the object dinner is that each member eats with objects not usually used at the dinner table.

• Choose kitchen utensils for each family member to use as a glass, plate and eating utensil. Drinking glasses could be a baby bottle, pitcher, vase, pan, serving dish, etc. Plates could be a soup tureen, a roasting pan, platter, salad bowl, etc. Eating utensils could be a wire whisk, spatula, pancake turner, egg beater, etc.

• Give each item a number or letter: drinking glasses = numbers (1-10 etc.), plates = letters (A-Z), eating utensils = double letters (AA-ZZ).

• Write these numbers and letters on pieces of paper as well and put them in three separate bowls. Family members chose papers from each of the bowls to determine what they will eat on and with.

• The best dinner to serve is spaghetti, garlic bread and salad. The bread acts as a good scoop if needed and spaghetti is difficult to eat. Don’t forget to take lots of pictures, as this dinner will be a memorable occasion for all. My grandchildren love this dinner — even the teenagers think it’s a blast.

Etiquette dinner: We usually hold this dinner for Valentine’s Day and exchange valentines as part of the activity. The purpose of this dinner is to teach our kids and grandkids how to be comfortable in a formal dinner setting. It is a good social skill to acquire and takes practice.

Practicing those skills at least once a year can be fun and a special mealtime for the family. The table setting should be beautiful and the dress Sunday best or formal if you desire.

• Choose a meal that can be served in courses: appetizer, soup, salad, main dish and dessert. Use as many eating utensils as available so children learn which fork, spoon, etc. is used for what course. Each course should also be served on a different dish. Bread and butter plates could also be used.

• Choose a host so children learn who is served first and how guests know when to start eating the course served.

Discuss and practice proper dinner etiquette as the meal progresses. As children grow, the older ones will be able to instruct the younger ones. Check the Internet if you need help with the rules of etiquette. Even little children can participate.

Adapt as needed.

During this special dinner, the grandchildren get to sit at the adult table and the parents sit at the kids table. The parents are the wait-staff for the children, and the children think the change in roles is pretty fun.

Mystery dinner: This is a really fun dinner for every age, but is especially good for teenagers and children who can read. We hosted this dinner for one of our son’s Homecoming parties. Put together a dinner menu but get creative with what you call each item. Even the eating utensils should have a name. You can come up with funny names for each, list them in a foreign language (see below) or choose a holiday theme.

April Fools is a good holiday theme for this dinner. One of our favorite ways to list the food items is in “Old Diner Speak,” with phrases a diner cook might use, such as “Catch of the Day” or “Puddle of Mud.” • The dinner is divided into three courses. Each participant chooses one to four items for each course from the menu. Because of the mystery names, they do not know what they are getting. They might get all eating utensils or all food and no eating utensils. For instance, the menu might look like this: Le leche (milk) Cuchillo (knife) Rebanada (bread and butter) Biftec (steak) Queque y helado (cake and ice cream) Cuchara (spoon) Ramificacion (fork) Arroz (rice) Vudura (vegetables) Servilleta (napkin) Box social: You can do this as a family, but it is more fun if you invite other families or friends to participate. It can be held inside during colder weather or outside as the weather warms.

• Each family member makes a picnic lunch or dinner and places it in a decorated box.

• All the boxes are placed on a table.

• You can number each box and draw numbers for the box you receive or you can auction off the boxes.

• If you choose to auction the boxes, it is fun to extend the time and have contests prior to the auction. The winner of each contest receives play money to use at the auction.

• Be sure that everyone in the group can earn play money by dividing the contests into skill or age groups — or mixing the groups so they are evenly matched and compete as a group.

• Relay races such as the following work well: 3-legged, sack, wheelbarrow, spoke, shoe scramble, tug-a-war, etc.

• Skill contests are fun too: hammering nails in a board, pinning clothes on a line, diapering a doll, sawing a board in half, Indian leg wrestling, arm wrestling, Jell-o snarfing, pie eating, etc.

• Another option is games where the one closest to the target gets the most money: pin the tail on the donkey, darts, horseshoes, ring toss, etc.

Campfire dinner: If you have a fireplace, try having a wiener roast in your living room. Lay out a plastic tablecloth on the floor in front of the fireplace, turn off all the lights and roast hot dogs and marshmallows. You could even sing campfire songs and play charades by firelight. If you are ever in an electrical blackout, try this; it makes what could be a high stress event into a “picnic.”

Luau: To make this dinner special, go all-out Hawaiian.

• Dress in moo moos, Hawaiian shirts or prints.

• Purchase plastic leis or make them out of silk or paper flowers.

• Place a folding table on cinder blocks on the floor.

• Decorate with flowers and a bright tablecloth.

• Use simple recipes that your family would like: a pork dish, rice, fruit salad or grilled pineapple, etc.

Birthday dinners: It makes family members feel special when they are recognized with a special meal they have selected. They get to choose the menu, including the flavor of cake and ice cream they want. We have a red “You are special today” plate that the birthday person uses for the meal. And the best part is that they get to be first in line at the buffet table.

Backyard picnic: This is a great way to feed your children lunch and keep your kitchen clean at the same time.

Pack lunches after breakfast and let your children have a picnic in the backyard. It keeps them occupied for a much longer period of time than eating inside and there is no mess.

Teddy bear picnic: Have children pick their favorite stuffed animal to lunch with them. A picnic table works well, and a children’s table and chair set work even better.

Use the play dishes and serve lunch. The children will eat lunch and play house as they do so. This meal will last as long as their imaginations do.

The occurrence of school shootings in places such as Newtown, Conn. have left many parents and teachers seeking answers to questions they should never have to answer from the little ones whose care they have been entrusted with. Why did that person kill those people? Is Billy in heaven now? Will somebody kill me? As the nation continues to grapple with the violence and we try to rationalize the irrational, our children look to us to pick up the pieces and help life return to normal, whatever normal is anymore.

I can’t help but wonder if we are missing an opportunity to learn from our children and let them lead us through times of tragedy.

Children are masters at living in the moment. The younger they are, the more this rings true. I read an article about the school shooting in Connecticut that described images of children being evacuated from the school who were seen laughing. In times of crisis, we can never predict how we will respond, regardless of how much training we have received. I was struck by the idea of a child running from a massacre laughing and smiling, but then it hit me: in that moment as they were fleeing the school, with police surrounding them, they felt safe and reacted as you would expect a child feeling safe to react — carefree and happy.

Even the children who were in the closet coloring likely were afraid but were probably equally as content to be hanging out with their friends and drawing, despite the horrors that were happening outside.

One of the things I love the most about working with children is their unparalleled ability to be in the moment, their huge capacity for compassion and forgiveness, and their resilience. I’m not sure when we start to lose that as adults, but I wish we never did. I have worked with children who have come from abusive homes beyond what I can comprehend, but when you get them removed from those situations, they are sweet, caring, and wonderful children.

As days passed after the tragedy in Connecticut and the citizens of that sleepy New England town tried to resume life as they knew it prior to December 14, 2012, discussion started as to what would happen to the school, where would the children go, etc. I wonder what the rebuilding process would look like if we looked at the situation through the eyes of children. I imagine our response would be significantly different. Once the appropriate investigation and ensuing cleanup were completed, the school should have been reopened immediately with an enhanced effort to return to business as usual. Kids thrive with structure and consistency and will ultimately gravitate towards it like moths to a flame.

Remember, they live in the moment. Once they got out of the school, I’ll bet some of them wanted to go out and ride their bikes, watch TV, or whatever else they would normally do on a Friday after school, not grasping the fact they had just endured a historic, albeit tragic, event in our nation’s history. The problem is, it’s the adults who stay stuck in the tragedy and trauma. This isn’t our fault, it’s a natural response to how we are wired and reflects the greater level of responsibility we have.

I have struggled to avoid reading more and more about such shootings. I guess I hope that the more I find out, the more I can try to make sense of these senseless acts. Do I really need to know all of the details, how many rounds of ammo the shooter had, what his background was, etc.? Of course I don’t, but with today’s endless news cycle, I can hardly avoid it; but even if I could, I don’t know that I would.

Many people who know I work with kids have approached me, asking for advice on how, if, and when to talk to children about tragedies such as this. I will do my best to summarize my thoughts and break it down by age/developmental stage.

Ages 0-4: Kids this age should not be made aware that anything out of the ordinary has happened. Every attempt should be made to go on with life as normally as possible. Structure and routine are key.

It’s okay for them to see you sad or crying, but they need to be shielded from images, TV or radio reports, and even conversation about the tragedy; they are simply too young to grasp what has happened.

Any attempt to talk about it with them will likely leave them confused and can lead to more anxiety. If they ask why you are crying, keep it simple. Remember, this is the age where you can still get away with answering “from Mommy’s tummy” when they ask where babies come from. Use this naivety to your advantage. A simple, “they’re in heaven now” will often do and they’ll go about their business.

Ages 5-8: Children are very egocentric and believe everything in the world revolves around them and happens because of them.

At this stage, when bad things happen, they often wonder if it was because of something they did or didn’t do. “If only I cleaned up my room better, Daddy wouldn’t have left.” A statement like that makes perfect sense to a 7-year-old, even though it may seem nonsensical to adults.

Also, at this stage, children still see death as a temporary thing.

In their experience, when Mario “dies” he comes right back to life or Wile E. Coyote keeps chasing Roadrunner even after he falls off a cliff. Kids are also more verbal at this age and, despite our best efforts, they will likely start hearing things from friends, TV, radio, or other outlets about what has happened.

Wait for them to make the first move. Even as they get older, this group still lives in the moment and they may hear about something and think, “That’s a bummer. … Which SpongeBob episode is on tonight?” However, if they bring it up, just listen. If they ask questions, answer just what they asked and trust that if they want more information they’ll ask. Children are notoriously precocious and aren’t generally known for beating around the bush.

Ages 9-12: Children at this stage are starting to develop a better understanding of death as something that is permanent. Some may have experienced the death of a grandparent or someone close to them and realize the person is not coming back. As their verbal and emotional maturity develops, they are capable of having more in-depth conversations about what happened, how it happened, and why it happened.

Again, take their lead. Don’t be surprised if they respond like a volcano — dormant and quiet one minute and spewing the next.

Roll with it and continue letting them dictate how, if, when, and for how long they talk. If they stop all of a sudden and move on to another topic, let them. Listening continues to be key and can be especially challenging for parents at this stage as they are trying to process the situation themselves while helping their children process it. Be patient with yourselves and be patient with your kids.

Grief is a process; expect your kids to progress through the stages more quickly than you do.

Ages 13-16: It seems that this is the stage where children start to lose some of their in-the-moment thinking. Their moral reasoning is increasing greatly now and their ego-centricity is decreasing, which allows them to view the world using a wider lens. At this stage, children are beginning to pull away from their parents and gravitate more towards their peer group. Don’t be offended if they seem to do all of their talking with their friends; this is a normal, healthy part of growing up.

Talk to them openly about what happened. Chances are they found out before you did and will know more about it than you due to Facebook, Twitter, and the growing number of social media outlets that exist. Their questions will likely start to involve deeper thought and some may even stump you. It’s okay to tell them you don’t know the answer to something. Sometimes not knowing can lead to a richer conversation as they see your vulnerability. Witnessing your vulnerability shows them it’s okay to be vulnerable themselves.

Ages 17 and older: Talk to them like you would talk to another adult. All of the above rings true for this group as well, but in an even more developed way. While they might not be coming to you first to talk, ask them what they talked about in school, with their friends, what’s trending on Google, etc. They likely aren’t needing guidance from you at this point, but older teenagers will appreciate the discussion and support.

In summary, listen and follow rather than talk and lead. It will be hard to resist the temptation to do the latter, but the former leads to a smoother journey through the grief process for adults and children.

Bottom line: take care of yourselves. As parents, if we’re not taking care of ourselves, our children will suffer. Also, remember that our children are often direct reflections of us. Be aware of how your reactions are influencing them. One of my favorite quotes is, “Children often fail to listen to adults, but they rarely fail to imitate them.”

I frequently get calls from parents looking for more information about how their child can get training and get into the business of modeling. There is an enormous amount of information about modeling on television, in books and on the Web. Much of that information is misleading, if not flatout wrong. Not to mention all the sales pitches from people trying to sell you pictures or classes or services you don’t need.

Here in the Treasure Valley there have been so-called model agencies coming to town for the weekend to discover the next “super model.” All you have to do is a short interview, wait for the call back...you always get one, and then sign up and PAY for photos, classes, etc. that will likely get you nowhere.

IDAHO ARTS Charter School

Unique opportunities, responsibilities for families

By Brad Carlson The day-opening bell that prompts the busy administrative office to clear faster as students settle into classrooms tells the visitor that Idaho Arts Charter is like many schools.

But as the work inside those classrooms begins, it’s clear the K-12 school at 1220 5th St. N., Nampa, approaches traditional subjects in its own way. For example, students working in a certified art teacher’s class go into more detail than one might expect for third- and fourth-graders.

Idaho Arts Charter School integrates fine and performing arts into its core curriculum, bringing unique opportunities for students and special responsibilities for parents. Ideally, students blend hard work with a passion for the arts. Parents must make sure students stay committed and show up at events ready to give their best; this is true at all schools with arts programs but can be a way of life at decade-old IACS. “Families can expect to become part of a larger family,” Executive Director Jackie Collins said. “There are tons of activities and gatherings that happen here for families.”

“Somehow, the majority of families that apply to our school have had some kind of exposure to our arts school,” said Kendal Fleshman, interim administrator at the school and a parent of students there. Many have seen media reports about the school or attended performances involving its students, and embrace the school’s arts-grounded approach after doing their research, she said.

The school has a yearly waiting list of 500 or more, according to published reports, despite some turnover. “We have families that find, after being here for a year or six months, it is not the best fit for their child. And that is the great thing about school choice,” Collins said.

Idaho Arts Charter three to four years ago reached a kind of critical mass with strong retention, limited headcounts in each grade level, and overall depth and sustainability in programs, she said. “Parents are surprised at the quality of instruction their children receive and the quality of work that comes home.”

Frequently presenting and performing is among requirements. Early nervousness onstage or in a gallery setting is usually short-lived as students gain experience.

“It makes the kids, by the time of graduation, confident,” Collins said. “They can talk to adults and interview well.

They learn to work in groups and problem-solve.”

Sports participation can be an issue for home-school and charter students. Fleshman said IACS students can play on the team of their neighborhood traditional school. Nevertheless, “our sport is dance,” she said. High school students take traditional P.E. after basing earlier physical education instruction on dance.

“Our superstars are our artists,” Collins said, referring to the arts in general.

Students and parents should be prepared for auditions and screenings. They are not required for enrollment, but are necessary for advanced arts classes and performing ensembles as the student progresses. The Electric Orchestra, a well-known performing group, is an example, Collins said. Students must wear uniforms at school, and be prepared for public performances and presentations staged locally and regionally.

All students take required arts courses, adding in-depth electives as they progress. For example, all grade 3-4 students must take piano, and an arts theory class selected from one of a handful of categories is required for high school graduation.

Along with arts classes like dance, visual art, and vocal and instrumental music, IACS offers a full range of traditional courses including those providing advanced placement or concurrent credit for college.

Idaho Arts Charter School (www.idahoartscharter.org) is covered by Title I of the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act that provides financial and other resources to schools with a substantial percentage of low-income students.

Collins said IACS helps bring arts-centered education to students who may not be able to access it otherwise.

Enrollment was 450 during the school’s first year, 2005-06.

Now it’s 780 and targeted for an additional 540 within five years. A second facility, to be ready for occupancy starting in August on part of the old Broadmore Golf Club, will provide more room for K-4 students the first year, for grade 5-8 students the next, and so on, Collins said. Mussell Construction, Nampa, is the builder.

The Nampa School Board, the school’s authorizer, recently approved a charter change enabling expansion, and a grant from the J.A. and Kathryn Albertson Foundation will help.

Children of founders and siblings of current students are drawn first, per state law, in the lottery that happens in the first few months of the calendar year. Then new local students are drawn, followed by students from outside Nampa.

Parents who have one child selected and another not selected initially should not get discouraged, Fleshman said, since they will qualify for the following year’s “sibling lottery” — which benefited her own second child after his older brother was selected as a kindergartener, she said. n Brad Carlson is a Boise-area freelance writer.

KIDS FIRST!

New Star Wars delights young reviewer

The wait is over! Star Wars: The Force Awakens opened nationwide on December 18. The secrecy surrounding this release was extraordinary. Even our KIDS FIRST! film critics who were scheduled to attend press screenings had to pledge to keep secret the time and location and weren’t allowed to even tell anyone they were going to it.

You should know that the pace of this film is very fast and the action quite intense. The original film’s iconic characters played by Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher are back, older and even more incredible than ever. But the new team, played by Daisy Ridley and John Boyega, definitely strike out on their own and command attention. The film is long at 135 minutes, but then so were the first ones. See our youth reporter’s full review below.

It is surprising that only 10 to 12 hours of films created the giant franchise we know as Star Wars. People have been waiting for a good Star Wars story ever since Episode 6 came out 32 years ago. Fellow Star Wars fans, I am pleased to tell you, it has come.

Everyone knows Star Wars is a sci-fi, action franchise, but this film is very unique for the fact that it goes much deeper. With Evil getting more and more powerful, there is drama and fighting between the characGerry O ters, but that doesn’t stop romance from sneaking in with a little bit of comedy. Granted, I was worried it would turn into a kid’s comedy, but quite a few times I found myself thinking that not only are the jokes perfect, they are also not overused!

All right, let’s get to the part everyone wants to read: the plot of the most hyped, but hidden film of the decade. The events start out 20 years after what took place in Episode 6 (spoiler alert for people who didn’t see episode 6). The Empire has fallen, yes, but a new Evil has risen, known as The First Order. The rebellion needs new Jedi now more than ever, but Luke (Mark Hamill) is missing and they need to find (wait for it) a new hope!

Is the film worth the wait? Ever since almost a year ago, people have been talking about new Star Wars episode, and it is SO worth it. Famous directors have taken on some great challenges before, including Spielberg finishing Kubrick’s AI. But J.J. Abrams took on something completely out of the ball field trying to continue Star Wars. The cinematography is spectacular, the ending shot (no spoiler) is one of the greatest endings I have ever seen in a film, and the whole story itself is unexpected and very enjoyable. Although there are many aspects that are not in the original Star Wars films, I think it is actually very nice to see Star Wars not get ruined, but go through its own evolving evolution.

As for the acting, of course, the original A-Team — Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and more — are phenomenal and I think it was the perfect idea to bring these characters back for the pure enjoyment of long standing fans.

However, it is really Daisy Ridley who steals the show. Her character, Rey, is so fresh and unique, full of emotion, and this character (still no spoilers, sorry) goes through so much drama in the film. It must have been a very hard role to play.

Daisy gives it 110 percent. I predict she will be win an Oscar nomination for this role.

The special effects obviously got better since the last Star Wars film in the early 2000s, and I still want to mention how breathtaking they are. Even for 2015, with all the CGI aliens, ships and spectacular space scenes, it is quite literally “eye candy.” My only criticism of the film is that it is a bit too long.

However, not one single scene is out of place or feels unneeded.

One of my favorite scenes is when we are reunited with Hollywood’s favorite spaceship. Rey and Finn (John Boyega) are trying to escape The First Order. They have two options for space flight, a “piece of junk” or another spaceship. Well, the spaceship gets blown up and it turns out the “piece of junk” is the Millennium Falcon! Of course, everyone cheers, claps and whistles in the audience once the camera shows the breathtaking ship. It is not only enjoyable, and a bit funny, but the camera technique is perfect. If you want to know the rest of the story, go get your tickets and watch the film!

This film is actually pretty mature. It isn’t as kind as episodes 1, 2 and 3. It has its violence, so I recommend it for ages 10 to 18. And adults who saw previous Star Wars films and appreciate them will enjoy this film as well. I give it 5 out of 5 stars because, even if it is a little bit boring in the middle, (it is 2 hours and 10 minutes long) J.J. Abrams, the cast and crew achieved the impossible and created a new masterpiece that can be proudly added to the Star Wars franchise. n

These are “high end” models that represent the top quality brands in clothing and beauty products and appear in big name fashion magazines.

They are also on the runway and in designer campaigns. They make big money.

If you want this career, you have to start as a teenager, be over 5’9” tall with long legs, be really thin (105-115 pounds), be beautiful (high cheek bones and chiseled features), have the right personality, no tattoos, piercings, etc. and be willing to relocate to a major market.

Fashion–The production cycle models are typically more of the commercial (rather than editorial) type. They include Fit, Showroom, Road Show, Retail, Catalog and Fashion Print modeling. Physical requirements for Fit, Showroom and Road Show modeling are similar to body types for high fashion editorial models, but other traits are more relaxed. They can make good money with a full-time career. Requirements for Retail, Catalog and Fashion Print modeling are still relatively tall and slim with an attractive mainstream appearance. Many of the opportunities can be found in more local markets.

Commercial Print is the backbone of the modeling industry and is used to promote a company or product. These models appear in magazines, newspapers, store inserts, posters, billboards and the Internet. They are often asked to play roles: “soccer mom,” “football coach,” “lawyer.” They can make good money, especially if they land a lucrative national contract, but few make a living at it. Requirements for these models are very different from the high fashion industry: one can be older, heavier, and shorter, with generic good or interesting looks and some acting ability.

There are many other types of modeling opportunities including: Stock Photography, Specialty, Artists’, Glamour, Fitness, Plus, Promotional and Television.

Overall, to succeed at modeling you have to bring the skills and attitude required to get the job done. The roles fathers play in parenting

By Robert Rhodes About a month ago my friend Ken’s father passed away at age 82. At the funeral, we had a chance to talk about our fathers and the importance they played in our lives. In so doing, we discovered that both dads worked hard, provided for their families and spent very little day-to-day time with their children. So why then did we cherish our fathers Robert Rhodes and feel like we learned so much from them? And conversely, why are such fathers criticized for not measuring up? It led me to look closer at the roles fathers play in parenting and why they are often criticized for their lack of involvement in their children’s lives.

While careful not to stereotype fathers or mothers, David Popenoe, who has summarized the latest research on fathering, finds that it is now accepted that dads “bring their own unique and irreplaceable qualities to childrearing.” Some of this appears directly related to the Industrial Revolution, when the father’s role became that of “primary provider.” This altered the father’s position and responsibilities in the family as it effectively placed the mother in the role of primary caretaker. This is now changing as women are grudgingly given greater access to the jobs (and salaries) traditionally held by men. But some of the differences appear to be related to a father’s nature and his tendency to be more action-oriented, more physical, less sensitive and less able to tune into the common feelings that permeate a family.

But before we look more closely at what dads bring to child-rearing, let’s look at some of the statistics that clearly demonstrate the impact a father’s absence has in a child’s life. According to the research, boys raised without fathers are twice as likely to drop out of school, twice as likely to go to jail, and four times as likely to have emotional problems. Girls are more likely to suffer depression, drop out of school, exhibit behavioral problems and have difficulty relating to men as adults. Dads therefore are not just providers and bystanders. Instead, their distinct approach to parenting contributes to the long-term health of their children.

So what exactly is dad doing and how is it effective and perhaps different from mom’s approach? According to Sue Shellenbarger in an article she wrote for the Wall Street Journal entitled “The Secrets of Dad’s Success,” a father’s parenting traits are no better or worse than a mother’s. 1. “Tackle Dad” time: In one study, more than two-thirds of small children, when given a choice between their two parents, preferred to play with their fathers. The rough play served to teach kids assertiveness, provided the fortitude to manage the setbacks in life, taught them tenacity, and emphasized the use of words over crying or whining. It also provided tender moments during the inevitable painful moments when the play became too physical. I understand now why my nephew would lay in wait for my visit and eagerly attack me at every opportunity.

2. Fathers challenge children more: This involves risk, exploration and assertiveness. Even with an infant, a father will tend to hold the child at arm’s length facing outwards. Or he will carry the child on his shoulders, facing the world.

3. Fathers teach children to be more independent: As a general rule, fathers tend to worry less over homework, grades, schedules or day-to-day expectations.

There is a prevailing view that children need to work independently and solve problems themselves.

4. Fathers teach resiliency: By encouraging risk taking, by not hovering over the child, by being at times blunt and direct, children learn to recover from inevitable setbacks and mistakes.

5. Fathers have different interests: Fathers tend to be less focused on the child’s particular interest and are more likely to invite the child to join them in their own hobbies or interests. Growing up, I remember many early Saturday mornings when instead of sleeping in, I got up and set off with my dad to the golf course to caddy, to the tennis club to beat the crowds, to the lake to fish for bass or to the neighboring farms to hunt. It left me feeling as if he trusted me, instilling a sense of self-worth and confidence.

So getting back to me, Ken and our fathers. Clearly fathering has evolved as today’s dads are generally more involved with their children. Even those dads staying at home full-time have nearly doubled over the past 25 years. But would we change a single thing about our own dads? The answer is unequivocally no. While on the surface our dads seemed remote and distant, in fact we now know that the presence of both our parents provided us with all the tools necessary to be healthy and competent adults. n Robert Rhodes has a master of social work from the University of California, Berkeley.
