Millennial parents win praise from boomer

I

t amuses me that each generation gets its own name, from boomers to millennials. Former news anchor Tom Brokaw popularized the term “The Greatest Generation” for Americans who lived through both the Great Depression and World War II. There are also the designated Generation X and Generation Y (aka millennials). I would love to be part of a generation that doesn’t have its own consonant or name, but I think I am actually part of what might be called the “tail end boomers.” I’m always the tail end of something!

Millennials have now overtaken boomers as America’s largest generation, but not by much: 75.4 million versus 74.9 million, according to pewresearch.com. Millennials are between the ages of 18-34; boomers are between the ages of 51-69. Gen-Xers cover the 35-50 age range and are also anticipated to surpass boomers’ population figures by 2028. (Can you guess why? Hint: boomers are getting old. And “young at heart” alone isn’t enough to stave off the inevitable.)

Differences in each generation’s work ethic, ideas about work-life balance and other ways of looking at life have been discussed by sociologists and others. But what are different generations’ views on parenting? I think it’s safe to say that the majority of people in each generation tried their hardest to be the best parents they could — that, I believe, is what they all share in common.

I thought it would be interesting to take a specific look at millennials. They’ve been studied as children, teens and young adults, but how are they doing as parents?

Many members of the millennial generation have in fact become parents by now. Statistics seem to vary; however, one of the most current articles I found was written by Kate Schweitzer on popsugar.com on March 31, 2016. It’s titled, “8 Things You Need to Know About Millennial Moms.” Schweitzer quotes a largely reliable source: the U.S. Census Bureau. She states that one in five moms is a millennial.

“They now account for almost 90 percent of the 1.5 million new mothers within the last year. To put it another way, there are nine million of them raising kids as we speak,” she wrote.

As I browsed the internet, there were a number of positive reactions to the parenting style of millennials; one of the people writing about them was clearly a member of the boomer generation, judging from her photo. So, no, it isn’t just millennials praising themselves. Marilynn Halas (the aforementioned boomer) wrote an article on huffingtonpost.com, dated September 4, 2015, in which she was almost effusive about millennial parents. In fact, her article was titled, “10 Things I Love About Millennial Parents.”

How’s this for a statement: “Contrary to popular misconception,

the millennials I know have a perspective and drive that may put them in a perfect position to raise the next greatest generation.”

Now that’s pretty big praise. Below are the 10 things she praised millennials for, taken from her article. Her comments have been edited strictly for the sake of brevity. The entire article is available at huffingtonpost.com/marilynn-halas/things-i-love-about-millennial-parents_b_8072484.html.

1. Millennials have been under a spotlight since before they were born. They have proven themselves to be creative, open-minded and community-oriented. These moms and dads are open to new ideas and have the skills to sift through them and decide what works for them — and even more importantly, what does not.

2. Millennials have perspective. They grew up in a world where our nation was at war and the Great Recession was an economic reality. Rather than hiding from these tough situations, millennials face them head-on and don’t flinch.

3. Millennials believe in themselves. The best parents teach by example, and this is a generation that understands why dreams and plans really matter.

4. Empathy is a priority. Millennials know empathy is the superhighway to understanding. They actively teach their kids to collaborate, build relationships and foster strong community ties.

5. Millennials aren’t afraid to ask for help. They know how to reach out to each other when they need help, advice or just a friend to listen.

6. Millennials aren’t trying to reinvent the wheel. They have a great respect and gratitude for their own parents and really know how to give their kids roots and wings.

7. Millennials understand empowerment and resiliency. The world they grew up in was constantly changing, and adaptation is a big part of this generation.

8. Millennials have a great awareness of time and space. Millennial parents know when to jump in and when to hold back and give their kids the time and space to learn and grow.

Less like helicopters and more like lifeguards.

9. Millennial parents understand the concept of stewardship. These parents are teaching kids about eating locally, living sustainably and taking good care of each other and our world.

10. Millennials value happiness. These moms and dads know how to put being happy on their to-do list as an end in and of itself. Prioritizing joy increases your chances of experiencing it.

Dr. Wallerstein wanted it to be clear that she was not against divorce. She notes in her book that serious marital conflict can be far more damaging than divorce itself. She also found that some children considered themselves better off after the divorce. For them, divorce seemed the best solution to a bad situation. Nonetheless, she did want to leave parents with the message that the potential for short- and long-term negative impacts of divorce are real. That divorce should be undertaken thoughtfully and realistically and that children do best when their feelings are placed first.

Crafts on a Dime

Make your own plastic wrap for leftovers

W

ith summer upon us, the season of barbecues is here. For me, I wanted to try this project to help phase out plastic wrap for covering leftovers in the fridge and sandwich bags for lunches. This also makes a cute cover for that upcoming get-together or a quick, easy gift. Once made, you need only to press it a bit around the edge of your dish and the warmth of your hands makes it just sticky enough to stay.

Please do not put this in the washing machine or dishwasher. Just use a bit of dish soap and cool water to clean it up. Warm water will cause it to melt. Because you cannot wash it normally, it is best not to use this with meat or anything you are trying to freeze. After using it awhile, it may begin to not stick as well, so just repeat the above instructions for melting new beeswax onto the fabric.

Recycle, Reduce, Reuse!

Supplies needed: Picture 1 - 100 percent cotton fabric, washed - Pinking shears - Beeswax - Oven - Pan, covered with aluminum foil - Sharp knife/grater - Tongs

Instructions: 1. Grate the beeswax or chip away at the block with a knife (like I did, LOL). Be aware that the wax is extremely hard to get off, so maybe pick up a used grater for just these types of projects.

2. Cut a 12x12, or whatever size you need, fabric square with pinking shears. These type of scissors help keep the fabric from fraying.

3. Preheat the oven to 170 degrees and line a pan with aluminum foil.

Place the fabric on the pan and sprinkle the bits of beeswax over the surface of the fabric. Picture 2 4. Bake for 5-10 minutes or until all the wax is melted. Once you remove it from the oven, quickly pick it up with tongs and allow it to hang/cool for 1 minute. It will cool very quickly. Now it is ready to use! Picture 3 n

The Arc

Helping special people achieve their goals

reasure Valley residents, keep making those valuable donations to the Arc whenever a representative calls.

Contributions are important to the organization and the people it serves.

The Arc started around 1956 or ’57. Nicole Lang, longtime assistant executive director and now development manager of the local Arc, said that the exact year is a little obscure, but Arc will hold a 60-year celebration in 2017.

The Arc primarily focuses on helping people with IDD, or intellectual and developmental disabilities, with the aim of helping them pursue a full life through self-sufficiency. “We have a passion for the people we serve, to help them achieve their independence,” Lang said.

In order to do that, they begin with a conversation with the people who come to them for assistance. “We talk to them about their goals and their families’ goals,” Lang said, explaining goals could entail a job, a place to live, education — “whatever feels to them like an ordinary life,” she said.

The people in Arc programs are referred to as “participants,” and they currently range in age from 18 to 83. They work on life skills with a support team. Skills range from riding a bus, shopping at a grocery store or going to the bank.

The Arc helps participants find jobs, or gives them jobs onsite at the complex of five buildings it owns on Albion Street in Boise.

Participants receive pay for their work. Lang defined the businesses at the Arc as micro-enterprises, and they include printing services, making dog treats, creating wearable buttons with slogans, and building Adirondack chairs. These jobs are for participants who aren’t ready for jobs outside the Arc environment, Lang said.

The next step is what she calls “enclaves,” wherein 3 to 5 participants work in a community business with a job coach. Currently, this work includes sorting recycling at Hewlett-Packard; doing light

janitorial work at Alsco or Big Brothers / Big Sisters; working in the cafeteria at Anser Charter School; and other opportunities.

They also walk dogs at the Humane Shelter. Lang points out that participants enjoy giving back. “The community thinks of people with IDD as recipients, but they’re also givers,” she said.

After the enclaves, the Arc helps participants find and keep their own jobs. Arc staff assists with resume writing, job interview skills and job searches. When participants get employment, a job coach goes with them for a 90-day trial period. If the coach isn’t needed after that, the participant is on his or her own. “The coaches are out of there,” Lang said. “We always say we want to work ourselves out of a job.”

The Arc oversees two assisted living facilities, each with eight residents. One facility is full of older people ages 50 to 60 who have their own rooms and live in what Lang refers to as a more traditional setting. They get assistance with medication, transportation and daily living needs for personal care. They have jobs and active lives.

The other facility has residents ages 35-55 in studio apartments.

The residents have jobs, and the idea is for them to eventually move out of assisted living. However, according to Lang, they are happy in their current situation, and the Arc won’t force them to leave. “They are happy there, secure and happy; and their families are happy with them there as well,” she said.

There are 48 participants in the developmental therapy program at the Arc, and they are under the care of developmental specialists.

But as many as 800 people with some degree of IDD take part in Arc programs, particularly a very popular one referred to as RAVE, or Recreation and Vacation Experience. RAVE events include dances, dinner and a movie, whitewater rafting, and even trips to Vegas, Nashville or Disneyland. Participants pay their own way.

While the developmental specialists who work at the Arc are professionals with degrees, the life skills coaches must have only a state-mandated minimum 12 hours of training a year and weekly supervision. The Arc is state-funded through Medicaid and follows state rules and regulations. The local Arc is actually the state organization and is known as Arc Idaho; it is affiliated with Arc National.

Though the Arc does receive some state dollars, the money it gets through its donation program is essential in helping meet the needs of citizens with IDD and is, in fact, the Arc’s primary source of revenue. Its small volunteer base of 100 to 150 people a year include those people who frequently call residents throughout the Treasure Valley to ask, “We’ll be having a truck in your area, would you care to leave anything out?”

The Arc recently changed its donation program and now takes more than clothing and small household items. It will now accept many things, from books to furniture. It also accepts donations of used vehicles, boats with trailers, and RVs. Lang said the Arc is paid per pound of cloth it gives to Savers in Boise. Savers sells nicer articles of clothing but recycles clothing that is more worn.

The Arc is also paid for the bigger items it collects and, according to Lang, all the money goes back into Arc services.

Lang has worked at the Arc for 19 years and its executive director, Lisa Cahill, has been there more than 20 years. “Nothing is better in my mind than helping someone identify what they want to do in life, and then helping them get there,” Lang said. n For more information about the Arc, its printing services, or its donations program, go to thearcinc.org.

It seems like I was just teaching my toddler the body parts and their purposes. Oh to experience the world through the senses of a child – the excitement, the passion – about even small things. My daughter, Jessie, is now a tween, but her enthusiastic reactions to everyday experiences still tickle me. She cherishes the moments with all her body parts.

Jessie and I recently spent the afternoon together. Our first stop was a restaurant, where I ordered chili. I tried something different and ordered it in a bread bowl. When the waitress brought it, Jessie’s eyes got so wide you’d have thought I won the lottery.

“Dad, you’ll always have to order this!”

Jessie sat across from me behind a huge bowl of salad, chatting happily as she tasted the various nuts, cheeses, and other toppings that decorated the lettuce. Jessie makes full use of her mouth for talking as well as eating, which sometimes gives my ears the sense they might start bleeding.

After lunch, we shopped. Jessie found a bottle of blue fingernail polish we thought was 99 cents, but it rang up for 37 cents. I’m not sure when her eyes sparkled more, as she celebrated the fabulous deal or that evening when she showed off her blue fingernails.

After buying the nail polish, Jessie noticed her favorite store was having a sale – the 75 percent off sign in the window was a sight to behold. “Dad, we need to go there right away!”

“Jessie, we need to buy sneakers, not lotions and soaps.” She twinkled her pretty eyes and shoe shopping waited. We left an hour later with a full bag of fragrant treats for her nose.

A few days later, our friend gave Jessie three bottles of perfume.

Jessie sprayed the first on her wrists and rubbed them together. She spritzed the second on her mom’s wrist. “Dad, I have one more to sample.”

“I don’t want to wear ladies’ perfume.” I said the words – and meant them – but my muscles must not have heard because I held out my hand and Jessie sprayed it, then pulled it to her nose. She then dragged my hand, towing me behind, for her mom to sniff.

The next morning, Jessie was still excited about her new per-

fume. Her mom, Mattie, sent her back to the bathroom to “tone down the scent.” I told Jessie it might be too much perfume if the teacher at the front of the room can smell her from the back row.

On our shopping trip, we finally found some sneakers for Jessie’s ever-growing feet. A few days later, I would question whether we needed that purchase when shoeless Jessie stepped onto our pollen-covered driveway in her socks and danced around in the yellow dust as if a light snow had fallen.

After paying for the sneakers, we browsed the department store.

“Dad, you’ve got to come and touch the softest rug ever.” “Dad, I love this coat. It’s the softest coat in the entire world.” Jessie repeated this several times, both before and after I purchased the green jacket for her. The next morning, rubbing her hands up and down her plush-covered arms, she was still thrilled. “I love my fuzzy coat. I’m always going to have a fuzzy coat. I’ll wear it in summer and winter and when I outgrow it, I’ll give it to Momma and get another one.”

On the ride home, Jessie gave the radio buttons on my truck a workout, switching stations to catch songs she liked. Her ears and mine don’t always appreciate the same sounds, but some of her music has grown on me.

At the beginning of our afternoon, before I ate my chili, I texted a photo of it to Mattie. Jessie’s enthusiasm was so contagious I had to share it.

When I finished the chili, there was a big hole in the bottom of the bread bowl. For some reason, I felt compelled to take an “after photo.” I picked up the bread and held it so that Jessie’s face was visible through the hole, then snapped the picture with my other hand. When I said, “Smile,” she smiled, but added, “Dad, don’t play with your food.” I’ve taught my girl well. She’s taught me, too – to use all my senses, especially a sense of wonder, to get the most out of every day.

Some businesses sell them at and contemporary, rustic and charming, bold and family friendly inexpensive prices or even donate them to you when they are or just an updated traditional style? All of these styles will dictate replacing some of the older ones that may be damaged. the direction that you take in your selections.

(Warning: Make sure you get pallets that don’t say MB on them. It’s best to get the ones that say HT. MB means the pallet was treated with methyl bromide. These pallets are rare since they have been phasing them out over the years, but there are a few still out there. Not something you want hanging around the air if you cut into them.)

3. Matchstick shades that let some light in but add a lot of privacy to your area work well. They can be mounted to the top of your patio covering with just a few nails, screws or hooks.

They come in the wooden-looking twig type and also come in the polyester manmade kind in a variety of colors.

4. Garden in “layers” and “garden up” with various layers of flowers, plants, bushes, trees and vines. Take a trip to some of the local nurseries and get some ideas there. A wonderful seasonal experience is attending those home and garden shows. It is always a wonderful way to get new ideas from the experts. Arbor vitae bushes grow quickly and are a good starting point along your fence to increase your privacy. 5. Fabric curtains on a rod that can be attached to your patio ceiling are a great way to take advantage of some wood already available. You could use the clip-on rings for a “no-sew” fabric on a rod.

For durability it is best to use outdoor treated fabric for all of those seasonal rains and winds that sometimes come unexpectedly. One of my favorite materials to use is painting drop cloths you can buy at your local hardware stores. You can also buy a grommet maker kit and install grommets to give you more durability for the canvas weight of the fabric. We used this type of treatment with special heavy-duty wire and hooks that were drilled into the ceiling. It has worked quite well in our area.

6. Buy some extra large pots so you can plant some big palms or tall grasses that grow quickly that you can place next to each other for more privacy. I have even seen tall grasses installed in large aluminum watering bins used on a farm. It is refreshing to see someone think outside the box instead of using regular planters.

7. If you want something more durable, there are now outdoor modular screens that are laser cut into various patterns that make them a little more unique than the typical lattices that are made out of eco-friendly materials. You can choose a pattern that is larger or smaller depending on the style and opening of the design. They can be mounted on wooden frames spaced out evenly or next to each other to add more privacy. I may not know exactly which option we will select for our outdoor privacy screen. However, we will choose something that will achieve the privacy that we need when we enjoy another barbecue or family game night. No matter what we choose, it will be fun, interesting and add that privacy that we need. It appears to be time to go to a nursery or a home improvement center to check out the latest options. I may see you there, too. n

The Treasure Valley Down Syndrome Association will host its inaugural golf tournament — the 2016 TVDSA Trisomy 21 Open — on Saturday, July 23, at Eagle Hills Golf Course, 605 N. • Check out PEERS, a manualized, social skills training intervention for youth with social challenges. It has a strong evidencebase for use with adolescents and young adults with autism spectrum disorder, but is also appropriate for preschoolers, adolescents, and young adults with ADHD, anxiety, depression, and other socio-emotional problems.

• Lists, pictures, prompt cards. For example, use photos to show different facial expressions and body language.

• Social skills training. The Secret Agent Society (SAS) is a social skills program that you can get as a computer game, board game or for group therapy sessions.

• Social Essence offers Modern Manners for Kids and IMPACT! Image Development for adolescents and teens.

• Social groups. Join local social groups to share experiences and make friends, or start your own social group.

No matter how many people you have teaching your child or teen social skills, unless skills are reinforced in daily life, across all situations, they will not be retained.

Parental involvement is crucial because no one else interacts with your child in all aspects of his or her life, except YOU. Others can learn from watching you. Be the example for siblings, aunts, grandparents, and other friends and family by setting high standards for social skills. Social skills are a necessary part of developing self-esteem and can determine your child’s success in many aspects of life. n

I

t is no surprise to hear that families today are busier than the generations before them. After work and school, soccer and dance class, we don’t have very much free time. Even our time to visit with Grandma is limited these days. As a result, our children are missing out on the family stories and traditions of the generations before them.

I often tell my kids to live in the moment.

Life is full of moments and opportunities to make new memories, but at our current pace, we often miss them. It is the moments in our lives that help us to make connections and strengthen our relationships. Don’t wait for another moment to pass. Cancel your plans, gather your kids and head over to Grandma’s house. Make the effort to restore the lost art of just spending time together.

Pass down a tradition – Ask Grandma to share something from her childhood with your children. Whether it is a game, recipe or song, sharing with the next generation rekindles Grandma’s memories and creates new ones for your kids today. When my grandmother was a child her family made homemade raviolis every year before the holidays.

Sharing that tradition with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren has allowed us to bond as we rolled, filled and had the occasional flour fight.

Get to know each other better – Make a list of questions that you may not know about each other and write it down in a journal.

Try asking each person to share a memory from a common time in their lives.

Start with the age of the youngest child in the house and

move up to the next age until the only one sharing is Grandma. For example, if the youngest is 6, start with a memory from the age of 6. If the next youngest is 10, then have everyone 10 and older share a memory from that time in their life. Don’t forget to bring the video camera to capture this wonderful moment.

Shake up your family tree – Ask Grandma to tell you the names of her parents, grandparents and siblings. You may discover family names that have been passed down for generations. Find out what part of the world your family comes from and when they arrived in this part of the country. If Grandma speaks another language, ask her to teach you a few words.

Does your family have any traditional clothes or music that has been hiding in the attic? Pull them out and tell their story.

Your family in pictures – Let Grandma be the tour guide down memory lane. Pop some popcorn and pull out the family movies. Dig to the back of the closet and dust off the photo albums. Your kids will love to see the house you grew up in and your childhood pets. Let them laugh at the crazy clothes you wore and the hairstyles of the day. Don’t forget to take out the baby pictures of each child and show them how much they have changed in just a few years.

Bring Grandma into this century – Okay, kids, it’s your turn. Bring Grandma a J-14 magazine and gush with her over One Direction. Introduce her to Instagram. Show her how to play Just Dance on the Wii or Minecraft on the Xbox. Explain what emojis are and send her a few via text. The technology of today, while part of our kids’ every day, is mind-blowing to our parents and grandparents.

Take silly pictures – End the day on a high note. Set up a backdrop with a sheet and decorative lights. Print out photo booth prop templates like eyeglasses, hats and mustaches or use some items from a box of dress-up clothes. Take multiple pictures of your family being silly for the day. Preserve today’s memories by framing those pictures and displaying them in a special spot in your home. F

or a short time, I worked in a little bakery in Pocatello called Geraldine’s. One day, as I was frosting cinnamon rolls, I found myself working side by side with the owner. At the time I was pregnant with my first child, a baby girl. He, a seasoned father, asked me teasingly what I thought our futures might look like. My mind ran back to home, remembering hillsides freckled with indigo and yellow wild flowers. I didn’t know how it would happen, but I hoped my husband and I would return to where our family had begun, in beautiful Boise.

Boise is where we’d spent our “church mice years,” rooting for the Broncos, shopping WinCo’s bulk, and riding the greenbelt.

In the Boise foothills, we discovered a mutual love for hiking.

We were blissful newlyweds. We were ramen noodle students: poor, forced to find happiness without much money. Conditions were perfect for fostering a deep loyalty to a special community.

“Maybe we’ll move back to Boise,” I said.

“Boise? What’s the big deal with Boise, huh?” the bakery owner asked.

Years later we did return with our children. Beautiful Boise didn’t disappoint!

The trails in the Ridge to Rivers system are rare safe places for a 5-year-old to roam free, singing camp songs along the way.

I watch my girls breathe the flora of the hills. They climb the quarry’s boulders and scramble around like marmots. We spy, with our little eyes, snakes and deer.

Back in town, the librarians know us by storybook interest. Both of my older girls, ages 5 and 8, have bicycle helmets autographed

by Boise’s own Olympian, Kristin Armstrong. They rode with her in the children’s division of the Twilight Criterium. We have taken fantastic city art classes from the same woman who sometimes rings up our groceries. A local triathlon club my husband and I joined welcomes our 8-year-old to do workouts with us whenever it is safe to do so; it makes her feel like a rock star. This spring the girls and I planted a small garden in our backyard.

With a little work to water and weed, the climate works well for growing healthy snacks and cultivating a love of the earth.

A childhood here, in beautiful Boise, is ideal.

What’s the big deal with Boise, huh? The beauty of the earth here is one thing. The city’s investment in families is another. But that’s not all of it. It is also the community. It is people who are very much like, and very much unlike, us. It is respect and it is caring. It is people who are willing and happy to fulfill roles in the city’s life. That’s where the magic lies in beautiful Boise.
