Team Notes u The Vandals are approaching their 500th all-time victory. Idaho has 491 wins entering the 2010-11 season. u With Idaho’s 75-63 victory over New Mexico State in the quarterfinals of the Western Athletic Conference tournament, the 2009-10 Vandals became the first Idaho basketball team, men or women, to advance to the WAC semi-finals. Idaho has been a member of the WAC since the 2005-06 season. u Despite starting the season with a 1-11 overall record, the Vandals finished .500 in WAC play with an 8-8 conference record, and eliminiated NMSU to advance to the WAC semi-finals. u Senior guard Rachele Kloke was named second-team all-WAC after leading the Vandals with 14.5 points per game in 2009-10. Junior Yinka Olorunnife was named to the WAC all-tournament team after averaging 23 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2 steals and 1.5 assists in Idaho’s two games. The Vandals have had at least one all-conference player every year since joining the Mountain West Athletic Conference in 1982-83.

2010-11 Idaho Women’s Basketball

(784), Denise Brose (959) and Alli Nieman (1,005). u Yinka Olorunnife finished the 2009-10 season in 7th all-time at Idaho with 74 career blocked shots. She swatted 20 in 2009-10 and needs nine more to overtake Kortnie Edwards (1989-93) for sixth all-time. The Idaho career record for blocked shots is 306 set by Mary Raese (1982-86). u Senior Rachele Kloke earned her first career Verizon Wireless WAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week honor after the week of Feb. 22-28. Kloke averaged 21.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game in leading Idaho to wins over San Jose State and Utah State. Included in her weekend was a 28-point outburst against USU, in which she knocked down a buzzerbeating 3-pointer from NBA range to give Idaho the win. u The Vandals set a new school record for 3-pointers made in a season in 2009-10 with 216. Idaho smashed the previous school record of 203 set back in 2004-05. The Vandals ranked second in the WAC as only Fresno State hit more long-range shots than Idaho. Idaho hit 30.6 percent of its 3-point attempts on the season.

u Idaho was picked to finish fourth in both the preseason media and coaches WAC polls, and the Vandals fulfilled that prediction, earning the No. 4 seed in the WAC tournament and advancing to the WAC semifinals.

u In her first season as Vandal, Bianca Cheever hit a team-high 54 3-pointers, converting on 31.6 percent of her attempts. Her 54 makes are the 10th most in a single season in Vandal history. The school record is 76 held by Susan Wulf since the 1998-99 season.

u Junior guard Shaena Kuehu has only played in 59 games in her Idaho career, but she briefly cracked the top-10 list for career 3-point field goals made. Kuehu has nailed 76 long-range shots during her career including 35 in 2009-10, and was in 10th all-time at Idaho until teammate Charlotte Otero passed her and finished with 78 for her career. Kuehu needs six more to overtake Rikki Jackson (1998-2000) for ninth all-time. The school record for career 3-pointers made is 207 set by Kelli Johnson (1994-98).

u The Vandals signed five players to join the team for the 2010-11 season, and four of the signees are over 6feet tall. Junior College transfer Adrie Shiels (Canberra, Austrailia/Midland College) stands at 6-1, while incoming freshmen Kelsey Bybee (Coeur d’Alene, Idaho/Coeur d’Alene HS), Alyssa Charlston (Sammimish, Wash./ Eastlake HS) and Ashley Walters (Wilsonville Ore./ Wilsonville HS) check in at 6-3, 6-1, and 6-4 respectively. Junior College transfer Ganeaya Rogers (Milpitas, Calif./ Ohlone JC) is the only signee under 6-feet, measuring 5-foot-8.

u Senior guard Rachele Kloke busted out with 26 points in Idaho’s regular season finale, and scored her 750th career point in that game. Kloke led the team in 2009-10 with 14.5 points per game, and finished the season with 778 for her career. u Senior Yinka Olorunnife led the Vandals in rebounding with 7.9 boards per game in 2009-10, and also averaged 11.4 points per game. Her 928 career points and 741 career rebounds are the most of any active Vandal. Olorunnife ranks fifth in all-time rebounds at Idaho, behind Dana Fish (778 rebounds), Mary Raese

u The 2010-11 Vandals will return four out of five starters from the 2009-10 team, as well as 2008-09 WAC Newcomer of the Year, Derisa Taleni, who sat out the 2009-10 season after suffering a season-ending knee injury during fall camp. Jon Newlee

2010-11 Idaho Women’s Basketball

Head Coach Third Season

2009 WAC Coach of the Year Career Record: 152-148 (.506) Idaho Record: 24-35 (.406) Jon Newlee was hired as the ninth head coach in University of Idaho women’s basketball history on April 15, 2008. The 2010-11 season will mark Newlee’s third year at Idaho, his 27th season as a collegiate coach and his 12th overall as a head coach. His career has seen stops at Saint Mary’s (CA), Southwestern JC, Texas-San Antonio, Southern Methodist, Hawai’i and, most recently, at Idaho State. Overall, teams he coached compiled a 458-292 (.597) record and teams on which he was the head coach compiled a 152-148 (.506) record. Teams he coached have qualified for post-season play in 13 of the last 18 seasons. At Idaho: In 2009-10 Newlee led the Vandals to a milestone victory when Idaho topped New Mexico State in the quarter-finals of the WAC tournament. It was the first trip to the WAC semi-finals in program history, as the Vandals finished the season one win away from playing for the WAC championship. Newlee led the team to an 11-20 overall season, capped by an 8-8 record in WAC play and the No. 4 seed heading into the WAC tournament. The 2009-10 Vandals set a school record for most 3-pointers made in a season with 216, smashing the previous record of 203 set by the 2004-05 squad. In his two seasons at Idaho, Newlee has led the Vandals to an 18-14 (.562) record in WAC play, and is tied for the third most wins of any WAC head coach in that time. In just his first season at Idaho in 2008-09, Newlee led the Vandal women to their best season in Western Athletic Conference play, as the team went 13-15 overall and 10-6 in the WAC on his way to being named the WAC Coach of the Year. Idaho swept eventual champion Fresno State during the regular season, earned the program’s first win over Hawai`i, won back-to-back conference road games for the first time since joining the WAC, swept four WAC opponents and tied for third place in the conference. It was Newlee’s third career Coach of the Year honor, as he also earned Big Sky Coach of the Year in 2004 and 2006.

Jon Newlee In The Postseason NCAA Tournament 1993-94 Southern Methodist 1994-95 Southern Methodist 1995-96 Southern Methodist 1997-98 Southern Methodist 1998-99 Southern Methodist 2006-07 Idaho State Women’s NIT 1992-93 Southern Methodist 1999-2000 Hawai`i 2000-01 Hawai`i 2001-02 Hawai`i 2003-04 Idaho State 2005-06 Idaho State 2007-08 Idaho State NJCAA Regional Playoffs 1988-89 Southwestern (CA) NAIA District Tournament 1985-86 St. Mary’s (CA)

Idaho’s turnaround was significant on the national level as well as the conference level. Idaho’s 9.5-game improvement was the seventh-best in the NCAA in 2009. What was even more impressive about Newlee’s first-year success was the he did it with a rotation of just six players, and with a team that only had one true post player. Despite the slim roster, there were still plenty of honors to go around. Yinka Olorunnife earned Second-Team All-WAC and WAC All-Defensive Team mention, Derisa Taleni earned WAC Newcomer of the Year and Second-Team All-WAC honors and Shaena-Lyn Kuehu was voted to the WAC All-Freshman Team. Newlee’s team was one of the most disciplined in the NCAA, as the Vandals led the WAC and ranked 15th in the NCAA with just 14.1 personal fouls per game, and ranked 90th out of 328 schools in Jon Newlee’s Coaching Stops turnovers per game. The Vandals also played a fiesty brand of St. Mary’s (CA) Assistant 1983-86 defense and came within 0.8 of breaking Idaho’s 19-year-old Southwestern (CA) Head Coach 1986-89 scoring defense record with a 59.5 defensive scoring average. Texas-San Antonio Assistant 1990-91 Southern Methodist Assistant 1991-99 Personal: Hawai`i Assistant 1999-2002 Newlee earned his bachelor’s degree in Physical Education Idaho State Head Coach 2002-08 from San Diego State in 1982. 2010-11 Idaho Women’s Basketball

Associate Head Coach Gavin Petersen

Assistant Coach Christa Sanford

Assistant Coach Karen Ada Petersen

Gavin Petersen begins his third season as associate head coach for the Vandal women and his seventh season with head coach Jon Newlee in 2010-11. Petersen’s regular duties for the team include post players, recruiting, scouting and team travel.

The 2010-11 season is Christa Sanford’s third at Idaho and sixth overall as a college coach. Sanford followed head coach Jon Newlee to Idaho in 2008 after a five-year stay at Idaho State. Sanford was an assistant for the Bengals from 2006-08, a graduate assistant from 2005-06 and a player from 2003-05.

Karen Ada Petersen enters her third season as an Idaho assistant and eighth overall as a college coach.

Petersen spent four years as an assistant at Idaho State for Newlee from 2004-08, with the last two seasons as associate head coach. He helped the Bengals earn three postseason berths in his four years, as well as a 2007 Big Sky Tournament title and a 2006 Big Sky regular-season title. In his first season at Idaho, he oversaw Yinka Olorunnife’s standout 2009 season that included a school-record 310 rebounds (11.9/game), an average that ranked ninth nationally, and a season average of 12.9 points that made her the only WAC player to average a double-double. At Idaho State, he coached three-time first-team AllBig Sky honoree, two-time AP All-America honorable mention and 2008 Wooden Award finalist Natalie Doma, who finished her Idaho State career as the Big Sky’s alltime leader in points (2,296) and rebounds (1,174). Doma was also the only player to be ranked in the top five in the NCAA in both scoring (24.7) and rebounding (12.4) in 2008. Prior to his time at ISU, Petersen was an assistant at Hawai’i for two seasons from 2002-04. Petersen focused on post players, video exchange and summer camps for the Rainbow Wahine and helped lead the team to a 2003 Women’s National Invitation Tournament berth. For three seasons prior to his time as an assistant, he was a manager for the team. Petersen graduated from Hawai’i Pacific University in 1999 with a B.A. in Justice Administration. While at HPU, he served as team manager for the school’s nationally-ranked men’s basketball team for four seasons. He earned his master’s degree in Kinesiology & Leisure Science from the University of Hawai’i in the spring of 2009. He married Karen Ada Piers August 2009.

Sanford focuses on coaching the guards, with other duties including overseeing team academics, recruiting, community service, equipment, and summer camps. Sanford was a two-year starter for ISU at guard. She helped the Bengals earn the team’s first Women’s National Invitational Tournament bid in 2004 and led the team to back-to-back Big Sky Tournament semifinal appearances. She earned a pair of Big Sky All-Academic awards during her career as well. She ranks fifth all-time at ISU in 3-pointers made (84) and in 3-point field goal percentage (36.5). She also played at Hawai’i for two seasons. Sanford already had a history on the Palouse before she arrived as a coach. She put together an impressive prep career at Pullman High, where she was a Washington 2A Player of the Year and a USA Today High School All-American basketball player for the Greyhounds. Sanford graduated from Idaho State in 2004 with a degree in communications. She earned her master’s degree in 2006 in physical education with an emphasis in athletic administration. Formerly Christa Brossman, she and her husband Tom Sanford were married in May 2008.

Petersen regularly works with the guards, while also assisting in recruiting and handling film breakdown and exchange. Petersen comes to Idaho after a four-year stay at Sacramento State from 2003-07. She helped the Hornet women improve by seven wins in 2004-05 and earn a spot in the Big Sky Tournament for the first time since the 1997 season. One year later, the team improved by another win and went 9-17, which was the team’s best record since 1996. In addition to her work with the Hornet post players, she also oversaw the team’s academic progress and the team finished with the highest cumulative grade-point average on campus. Before Sacramento State, Petersen spent one season as an assistant at Nova Scotia Agricultural College in Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada in 2002-03. As a player, Petersen helped Oregon to three straight NCAA Tournament berths from 1998-2000 and back-to-back Pac-10 titles in 1999 and 2000. For her senior year, she transferred to St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, where she was an all-AUAA selection after finishing third in the nation in 3-point shooting (.450). Petersen earned her bachelor’s degree in Human Kinetics from St. Francis Xavier in 2002 and has earned credits toward a master’s degree in Kinesiology. She originally hails from Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada. Formerly Karen Ada Piers, she married Gavin Petersen in August 2009.
