Why the “Vandals”? Don’t use your dictionary to find Idaho’s definition of a Vandal. No, Idaho’s student-athletes go by a name earned nearly a century ago by a basketball team coach by Hec Edmundson, whose teams played defense with such intensity and ferocity that sports writers said they “vandalized” their opponents. The mark made by that 1917 team went far deeper than wins and losses on the court. In 1917, Harry Lloyd “Jazz” McCarty - a writer for the studentnewspaper, the Argonaut - subtly tagged the team with a new nickname in a pregame write-up: “The opening game with Whitman will mark a new epoch in Idaho basketball history, for the present gang of ‘Vandals’ have the best material that has ever carried the ‘I’ into action.” McCarty’s indirect suggestion stuck. In 1921, McCarty and Edward Maslin Hulme, the dean of the College of Liberal Arts, succeeded in their push to have Vandals officially adopted as the nickname for Idaho teams. Adding a special touch were Edmundson’s roots. He was from Moscow and made a name for himself at Idaho as one of the nation’s top distance runners. He eventually left Idaho to coach at the University of Washington, where the Huskies still play basketball in the building bearing his name - the Edmundson Pavilion.

JEFF BEAMAN Director of Tennis
Head Men’s & Women’s Coach Alabama A&M, 2000 Eighth Season Jeff Beaman joined the University of Idaho tennis program as head coach of both the men’s and women’s teams in August of 2006, and since 2008 has served as the Director of Tennis and the head men’s tennis coach. Beaman coached both the men and women’s teams from 2007-08 and 2014. Beaman is a five-time Coach of the Year, earning the recognition from the Western Athletic Conference in 2013 for the men, and 2014 for both the men and women, along with ITA Mountain Region Coach of the Year honors for the men in 2011 and the women in 2014. Beaman took both Vandal programs to the 2014 NCAA tournament by winning WAC tournament championships on both sides. It was the first conference championship in the history of the women’s program and the first for the men since winning the Big Sky in 1978. The Idaho women achieved a program-best No. 51 national ranking during its 11-match win streak under Beaman in 2014, and went 19-6 on the season. Beaman increased Idaho’s win total in each of his first four seasons coaching the Vandal men, peaking with 22 wins in 2010 after taking over a program that won just two matches in 2006, going 2-22. Beaman led the Idaho men to their first top-50 national ranking when the Vandals were ranked as high as No. 46 in 2011. Beaman has taken the Vandals to three straight WAC championship matches, falling to Fresno State in 2012 and Denver in 2013 before winning the program’s first WAC Championship over New Mexico State in 2014. Beaman came to Idaho after serving as an assistant men’s coach at Texas Christian University for one season. In his time at TCU, he helped the Horned Frogs earn a 2006 Mountain West Conference crown, a trip into the second round of the NCAA Tournament and a No. 31 national ranking. Two of the players from that team also earned All-America honors. Beaman’s first stop as a full-time head coach came at Barton County (Kan.) Community College, where was the head men’s and women’s tennis coach from 2000-03. From 2001-03, he guided the men’s program to three straight top-five finishes in the final NJCAA rankings. The team was second overall in both 2001 and 2002 and fourth in 2003. His women’s team finished the 2003 season ranked third in NJCAA. Overall, he coached six ITA All-Americans and 10 NJCAA All-Americans at Barton County. In 2003, he was also nominated for the Barton County Community College Difference Award. After Barton County, Beaman moved on to the College of Santa Fe, where he started as an assistant in 2004 and eventually was named head coach in 2005. In the inaugural year of the program in 2004, he helped lead the Spin to a No. 5 national ranking and a quarterfinal appearance at the NAIA national tournament. The team also featured three All-Americans and the NAIA Player of the Year, Ivan Angulo. In 2005, he led the team to a No. 1 final ranking in NAIA and helped five of his players achieve All-America status. Following the season, he was named Coach of the Year for

VANDALS TAKE WINNING TO NEW LEVEL IN 2014
The Idaho women’s tennis team strung together seven consecutive winning seasons from 2007-2013 with a combined 121-53 (.695) record, but had no hardware to show for it. The Vandals, however, took their winning ways to a new level in 2014, going 19-6 and winning the program’s first conference championship and securing its first bid to the NCAA tournament. “It was a very rewarding experience to validate such a great season by winning the conference championship,” Idaho coach Jeff Beaman said. The milestones don’t end there. Two Vandal players broke program records and the 2013-14 team is responsible for 10 entries into Idaho career and single-season individual top 10s. Beaman became one of two head coaches since 2000 to earn ITA Regional Coach of the Year honors on both the men’s and women’s side in his career, and he also earned WAC Coach of the Year recognition for both the men and women. The Vandal women reached a program-best No. 51 national rank and spent five weeks in the national rankings. Just days before the first match of the season, the Vandal women learned that former head coach Myriam Sopel had accepted another job, and would not be coaching the team in the spring of 2014. “It’s a season that we definitely had a lot of talent but at the same time the players could have looked for excuses with losing their coach at the start of the year,” Beaman said. “There were times they were having different people coaching them. But they were a group who put together what could go down as one of the best seasons for Idaho women’s tennis.” After a season-opening loss at Washington State, the Vandals rattled off 11 consecutive victories. Idaho then dropped two straight decisions but bounced back to win five more in a row to improve to 16-3 on the season. That winning streak came to a halt at WAC foe New Mexico State when the Aggies took a 4-3 win in Las Cruces, N.M., the site of the WAC championships just two weeks later. However, when the Vandals got their shot at revenge in the WAC finals against the Aggies, there was no repeat upset. Idaho took home the championship with a 4-1 victory to secure its first NCAA tournament berth. The Vandals advanced to play No. 16-overall seed USC in the opening round of the NCAA tournament, where they fell 4-0 to end their season. Idaho senior Victoria Lozano went 27-12 in 2013-14, boosting her to 87 career wins, passing Barbara Maciocha (2008-11) for the most in program history. Despite having just three seasons of eligibility, senior Almudena Sanz climbed all the way to sixth on that list with 66 career singles wins. Sophomore Belen Barcenilla posted a 30-8 singles record in 2013-14, breaking the program’s single-season singles wins record of 28 previously held by Efrat Leopold from the 2006-07 season. Lozano’s 27 wins are third and freshman Galina Bykova’s 26 tie her for
18
fourth on that list. In addition to Beaman’s Coach of the Year honors from the WAC and ITA, six different Vandal players combined for 18 WAC honors in 2013-14. Idaho not only had the Coach of the Year in Beaman, but added Player of the Year in Lozano and Freshman of the Year in Bykova. Lozano and Bykova were joined on the first-team all-WAC singles team by Sanz. Sanz and Lozano teamed up for first-team all-WAC doubles honors and Bykova, Rita Bermudez, Barcenilla and Sophie Vickers were each second-team all-WAC doubles selections. Idaho won 19 out of 23 doubles points in 2014. Beaman said the experience as a whole is what he will remember most about the 2014 season. “The combination of everything,” he said. “There were certainly some extreme high points and big wins. Beating Boise State at Boise State, beating Fresno State when it came down to the wire. There were some frustrating, surprising losses and some rough patches, but those were very limited. The entire season and what was accomplished throughout the season is what I’ll remember.”

VANDAL MEN SKIP REBUILDING STEP; CLAIM FIRST CROWN SINCE ‘78
What began as a rebuilding year ended up as a milestone season when the Idaho men’s tennis team peaked at the right time to win its first conference championship in 36 years and reach the 2014 NCAA tournament. After losing a trio of players who combined to go 4925 at the top three singles positions in 2013, Idaho coach Jeff Beaman knew 2014 would bring some challenges. After a 3-1 start the Vandals lost five matches in a row and eight of their next 10 to find themselves with a 5-9 overall record in mid-March. “It was at times possibly my most frustrating season at Idaho,” Vandal coach Jeff Beaman said. “The program has gotten a lot better over time. Knowing that we had such a talented team and still seeing some of the results and struggles was tough.” The Vandals, however, stayed focused and won backto-back matches to finish the regular season with some confidence. The wins also helped Idaho earn the No. 2 seed in the Western Athletic Conference tournament, which came with a bye into the conference semifinals. A 4-2 win over UTPA in the WAC semifinals put Idaho into the WAC championship match for the third consecutive season, yet the Vandals had come up short in their previous two attempts. The Vandals again faced an uphill battle with the WAC crown on the line as top-seeded and tournament host New Mexico State stood in Idaho’s way. The Aggies also had a 4-0 win over Idaho earlier in the season under their belts. The Vandals, however, wouldn’t be denied. Idaho fought to a 4-3 victory to earn its first conference championship since winning the Big Sky in 1978. “It’s a real sense of accomplishment,” Beaman said, who clinched a championship on the women’s side the same day. “We have had teams that were higher in the national rankings with ridiculous amounts of talent, but winning the championship in the end is the one thing that matters. That was a real great experience, especially to be a part of it on both sides.” The win came with a berth into the NCAA tournament where the Vandals faced top-overall seed and eventual national champion Southern California. Idaho ended its championship season with a 4-0 loss to the Trojans. The WAC championship and NCAA tournament berth weren’t the only accolades the Vandals earned in 2013-14. Beaman picked up WAC Coach of the Year honors and five Vandal players combined for 16 WAC honors, including WAC Player of the Year and first-team all-WAC singles and

doubles honors to senior Jose Bendeck, first-team allWAC singles honors to Artemiy Nikitin, and second-team all-WAC honors to Cristobal Ramos Salazar and Cesar Torres. Bendeck also finished his career as Idaho’s second all-time singles wins leaders with 88, while he and Ramos Salazar teamed up for third in Idaho’s single-season doubles wins with 24 and ninth on Idaho’s single-season doubles winning percentage at .800 (24-6).

MEMORIAL GYM OUTDOOR COURTS
The University of Idaho tennis program took a step forward with renovations and upgrades to the outdoor tennis courts on campus. Construction was completed on the six Memorial Gym Courts and the four courts available on the Administration Lawn. “The completion of the four Admin Lawn courts as well as the upgrades at the Memorial Gym courts are a huge boost for our tennis program,” Idaho Director of Tennis Jeff Beaman said. “This will not only benefit our program but will also be an asset to Moscow and the surrounding tennis communities.” Construction began in May of 2009 on the courts on the Administrative Lawn and was completed in June. Attention then shifted to the Memorial Gym courts where upgrades were completed in September and the final surface coat was applied in October to complete the project. “They really did a great job, not only on the playing surface but by putting in four very attractive courts in the picturesque Admin lawn setting,” Beaman said. “The Memorial Gym court upgrades were extremely well done and have added to the courts already in that location.” The men’s and women’s teams now have ten courts available to play competitive matches. Prior to the renovations the team was only able to play competitive matches on three of the courts. “Going from three playable courts to ten gives us the ability to host home matches, WAC events and fall tournaments in the future,” Beaman said. “Ten courts will also have the benefit of running more effective team practices, providing upgraded facilities for HPERD classes, intramurals and use by Idaho students, facility and staff. The upgrades to the outdoor tennis courts are another example of the increased commitment to high quality facilities by the Idaho administration and athletic department. “I would especially like to thank Rob Spear for his role in getting these courts done,” Beaman said. “This project along with the Kibbie Dome renovations and the many other things happening right now and on the near horizon, are making Idaho Athletics into a premier athletic program.”

KIBBIE-ASUI ACTIVITY CENTER
The Kibbie-ASUI Activity Center, also called the “Kibbie Dome,” is one of the unique facilities in all of the NCAA. The Kibbie Dome has been home of Vandal Athletics since 1975, when the barrel-arch roof was completed. In 1976, the building earned the award for America’s Outstanding Structural Engineering Achievement. It took nearly seven years to complete the structure, which is tall enough to fit Idaho’s Theophilus Tower inside. Construction began in 1969 on the site of the former Neale Stadium, which had partially been destroyed by fire. The field and stands were completed in 1971, but it took four more years to finish the unique roof. The east end addition, which includes the athletic department offices, locker rooms, training rooms and a weight room, was completed in 1982. In 2004, the facility began its next phase of improvement, as enhanced academic and athletic support facilities were added for student athletes. The Norm and Becky Iverson Speed and Strength Center was added, more than doubling the size of the previous weight room to 7,000 square feet. Locker rooms were also expanded to over 14,000 square feet. Team meeting rooms, two student athlete computer labs, study rooms and expanded academic support areas have also been added. Additional expansions are also planned for the near future. The Kibbie Dome is the indoor facility for Vandal men’s and women’s tennis. Idaho tennis also uses the dome to train in the winter and during times of inclement weather. The building also hosts football, basketball and track and field. The floor can be cleared for action on three courts which have been resurfaced as recent as 2011.

City of Moscow
MOSCOW IS: IS • One of the top 100 Small Arts Towns • Host of the Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festival • Largest of the 27 Moscows in the United States • A U.S. Small Arts Center • A “Gem Community” Moscow is the perfect example of the old adage: Don’t judge a book by its cover. Small though it may be, Moscow has plenty to offer. More than 130 years after it was settled, Moscow is a small yet vibrant community with a penchant for the arts and the University of Idaho. Every year people come from around the world to take part in events such as the Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festival or the Renaissance Fair. So much so, the city was named one of the top 100 small art towns in America. The city’s 22,000 residents are a bright and diverse group of people. The city offers many of the advantages of a big city while retaining its small town friendliness. Crime in Moscow is almost non-existent. For entertainment, choices abound whether they be indoor or out. Outdoor lovers might believe they’ve landed in paradise. Since Moscow is nestled between the rolling hills of the Palouse on one side and Moscow Mountain on the other, opportunities abound for outdoor entertainment. Camping, skiing, snowmobiling, hunting and fishing locales can all be found within a few short miles from town. If you’re the sort who prefers more urban forms of entertainment Moscow offers a broad assortment of activities typical of a small town influenced largely by its resident university. Add to those, a variety of theatrical presentations and concerts on the Idaho campus, and just about every choice of entertainment can be found. At 2,500 feet above sea level, Moscow has a mild climate despite it being located in the northern United States. Temperatures rarely drop below 24 degrees during the winter and the summer months won’t get much hotter than 87 degrees for a pleasant year-round climate.

State of Idaho Idaho was settled during the gold rush of the 1800s. Veins of silver and gold were found in the mountains of central Idaho and it wasn’t long before thousands of pioneers had settled all over the territory in an attempt to get rich. As the pioneers mined for gold, they happened upon a pleasant surprise. In addition to the silver and gold, Idaho was abundant in gems such as topaz and jade. Hence Idaho’s nickname: the Gem State. Idaho is one of the most scenic states in the nation. It holds claim to numerous world-famous sites. Here are just a few of the many wonders Idaho offers. • Hells Canyon, the deepest river gorge in the U.S. – 8,000 feet deep at some points. • Shoshone Falls (36 feet taller than Niagara falls) • Soda Springs (largest man-made geyser) • The Sawtooth Mountains in central Idaho • The world famous Lava Hot Springs • The “Craters of the Moon” in south-central Idaho • Sun Valley Resort, where the movie stars play • Coeur d’Alene, playground of the Pacific Northwest • Bruneau Dunes, the largest sand dunes in North America Geographically, Idaho is one of the most diverse in the country. From the rolling deserts of southern Idaho and the forested mountains of central Idaho to the rolling plains of the Palouse, this state has it all. If you’re into river rafting, Idaho has the Salmon River, nicknamed “The River of No Return.” If you like water sports, Idaho has more than 2,000 lakes with names, and many more without. One of the most famous is Pend Oreille, which is more than 1,100 feet deep in some parts. The Navy has tested some of its submarines at Lake Pend Oreille. Idaho is an outdoorsman’s dream come true. The state offers thousands of miles of trails for backpackers. Hunting and fishing locales are abundant all over the state. Idaho is home to part of the famous Lewis and Clark Trail. You can learn first-hand how the expedition was saved from certain starvation by the Nez Pierce Indian tribe. Idaho is the 13th largest state in the nation, but is sparsely populated with 1.3 million residents. The benefit of this is low crime rates and a healthy lifestyle. Last but certainly not least, Idaho indeed does have great potatoes. In 1937, the Idaho Potato Commission was formed. The state-run agency’s responsibilities include researching and expanding the Idaho potato market.

A Brief History
The University of Idaho opened its doors on Oct. 3, 1892, when it welcomed about 40 students and one professor, John Edwin Ostrander. On June 11, 1896, the university graduated its first class when ffour students marched across a stage to receive their diplomas. Two yyears later, the university awarded its first graduate degree. By 1899, a growing body of University of Idaho alumni formed the Idaho Alumni Association. Alumni numbers weren’t all that grew in those early days. Over the next few years, the University of Idaho established its College of Agriculture, dedicated Ridenbaugh Hall and established the Pacific Northwest’s first Department of Domestic Science (later to be called Home Economics). The Administration Building fire in 1906 was a turning point in the university’s history. John Tourtellotte, a Boise architect who had designed the state’s capitol, designed a new Tudor Gothic structure to symbolize the university’s growth and maturity as a major institution of higher education. The Administration Building remains the centerpiece of campus. The hiring in 1908 of the nation’s premier landscape architects, Olmsted Brothers of Massachusetts whose firm’s founding father designed New York’s Central Park, led to the small-town New England look of the campus. President Theodore Roosevelt was the first U.S. president to visit the campus in 1911. He planted the first tree in Presidential Grove. Through the next 50 years, the campus continued to grow in size and academic offerings. Among the additions were Forney Hall, the School of Education, Science Hall, Hays Hall, the Music Building, the Library, the Student Union and outreach campus locations. In 1976 the new ASUI-Kibbie Dome won a national engineering structural achievement award. Its sound structure has w withstood roaring cheers of Vandal fans (as well as the groans and w wailings of rival teams) ever since. Today, the university is home to over 12,000 students and nearly 1,300 faculty and staff. It continues to be a leading place of learning iin Idaho and the West, because although it is ever-responsive to the cchanging needs of its students and society, it never forgets its roots aand traditions. Perhaps no better example of this distinct combination of rich h history and innovative service is the Associated Students of the U University of Idaho (ASUI). Today as vibrant as ever, ASUI has been a fforce on campus for more than 100 years. 48

2013-14 University of Idaho Tennis Student-Athlete Services / Athletic Training Barrie Steele Director of Student-Athlete Services Head Athletic Trainer Barrie Steele has been the head athletic trainer at Idaho since 1986. He oversees a full staff of certified athletic trainers and works hand-in-hand with Idaho’s team physicians: Dr. Steve Pennington, Dr. David Rych and Dr. Ed Tingstad. Steele is a 2011 inductee into the National Athletic Trainers Association Hall of Fame.
Student-Athlete Support Services With the number one goal being prevention, University of Idaho athletic services provides not only equipment, strength and conditioning and preventative athletic training measures, but coordinates with sports nutritionists and sports psychologists for the overall well-being of Vandal student-athletes. “We approach our jobs first from a prevention standpoint,” head athletic trainer Barrie Steele said. “But injuries do occur in athletics and when they do, we make sure our student-athletes receive the finest in immediate and follow-up care. When they return to competition, our goal is to have them in better condition than before the injury and with a reduced chance of re-injury.” Making the job easier for the Steele and the Idaho StudentAthlete Services staff was the total overhaul of the athletic training and equipment room areas over the summer of 2008. The locker rooms received a ‘facelift’ of new flooring and tiling, while two new individual team rooms, one new computer lab and one auditoriumstyle meeting room were also added. After the renovation, the equipment room nearly doubled in size. Totally new washer/dryer systems cut hours out of cleaning times, while a new ‘cubby’ equipment system greatly streamlines the equipment check-out process. The athletic training area was also expanded greatly, with new offices, larger work areas, and private exam rooms. Then enhancements have given Idaho’s athletic trainers more room to work with and have greatly expanded its capabilities for in-house treatment and rehab.
Idaho Athletic Training Philosophy Statement The purpose of the Idaho athletic training room and its staff is for the prevention, care and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. All student-athletes, regardless of sport affiliation, race or gender, have equal access to the training room and the services provided therein.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
Dr. Rob Spear Rob Spear assumed the lead of the University of Idaho athletic department during a crucial juncture in its storied history. The Vandals were seeking solidification of their conference status and their facilities were in need of modernization. They needed a leader with vision and passion. Spear fit the bill. First was securing a home in the Western Athletic Conference, a league that preserves historic rivalries and offers the benefits of a Division I association. Next was rebuilding the Vandals’ home. He was on hand to oversee the final stages of the construction of the Iverson Speed and Strength Center. Next were the playing surfaces – inside and out. The Vandals now have a SprinTurf practice facility outdoors and RealGrass Pro inside the Kibbie Dome. The football, men’s and women’s basketball, and swimming locker rooms were renovated into modern, stylish facilities for the student-athletes. Last fall, the athletic training and equipment rooms were renovated and state-of-the-art classrooms and meeting rooms came on line as part of a multi-million dollar facelift for the Kibbie Dome. Last fall, the first phase of a new-look Kibbie Dome debuted when the plywood on the west end wall was replaced with translucent panels. When the Vandals kickoff in 2011, not only will the east wall match the west but there will be a new club area with suites, loge boxes and a clubroom as well as premium seating and a new press box. Facilities are but one area where Spear has moved the department forward. He added to the support services staff to enhance the student-athlete experience. Computer labs and academic support staff are cornerstones of a successful department and the additions and upgrades in those areas are paying dividends. In the fall of 2007, the Idaho Athletics Hall of Fame was established with 100 individuals and five teams being inducted over a two-year period as part of the inaugural class. His involvement isn’t limited to the Idaho campus. He began a second term with the NCAA’s ‘Legislative Council – one of two top-tier governing bodies in the organization. “I am honored and excited to represent the Western Athletic Conference on this governing board,” Spear said at the time of his appointment. “It is a tremendous opportunity to make an impact on future NCAA legislation to ensure we continue to provide the best possible service to the student-athlete.” Spear’s ties with athletics are life-long. He was a standout high school athlete in his native Butte, Mont., before moving on to letter four times at the University of Great Falls. Next was a two-year professional basketball career with the Montana Golden Nuggets, at the time coached by George Karl. He earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Great Falls in 1980 and his MBA from the University of Montana in 1983. He accepted a position as an internal auditor with the University of Idaho in 1989. While working at Idaho, he also pursued his doctorate in education, which he completed in 1993. Prior to his appointment as director of athletics in 2003, Spear was the interim assistant financial vice president. He also spent time at Idaho as the Assistant Vice President for Outreach in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences and in grants contracts. He and his wife, Sandy, have one daughter, Morgan.
