Triangle hideout

Conceptual shelter, built in 1:1/ 2 wekks / Team work A place to hide, secluded from the outside In this project the idea have been to work with a space that has a clear difference between the inside and the outside, yet the transition between the two sides are well integrated with one element, the triangle shape. The project was a group work where we developed a mockup model based on the atmosphere in the city of Zobeide, Invisible cities by Italo Calvino. The explores imagination and the imaginable through the descriptions of cities by an explorer, Marco Polo. The work of building was done in a group of 3, the concept models and the initial idea was developed by me and built by the group in a mock up model, 1:1.

“This was the city of Zobeide, where they settled, waiting for that scene to be repeated one night. None of them, asleep or awake, ever saw the woman again. The city’s streets were streets where they went to work every day, with no link any more to the 45 dreamed chase. Which, for that matter, had long been forgotten.” -Invisible cities, Italo Calvino

STRATEGY

Inside out

• Make the most out of the triangular form • Contrast between inside and outside

From the concept of extrude and subtract we have been exploring the geometry of triangles. The outside, the “shell” overlap so that the inside is protected from insight. The interior is made by a skeleton structure of triangles and covered with fabric for a soft and silent atmosphere.

Tap dance pavilion

Exploring space through dance / 4 weeks/ Individual work

It all started with a dance workshop by the professional dance group Nomo Daco, in wich we got to practice dancing from experience. From the characteristics of the dance I have been developing a space for the choosen dance art, Tap dance, a space to practis and perform. PHASE 1 Analyze and map out the dancers movement PHASE 2 Interpret the dance in an abstarct model PHASE 3 On an given site, develop a dance space that respons to the charachteristics of the dance.

Inhabitable wall

Occupying the Hinterland - Holmsund Peninsula / 4 week/ Individual work

The core of living - a rigid family home On the Peninsula Holmsund the neighboor hoods are layed out in rigid rows with a very homogene group of habitants. In order to stress more fluid options to move throughout the neighborhood, we aim to create new routes of transition. The idea is to implement new points of contraction which breaks up the static layout and promotes new attractions among the inhabitants. The Inhabitable wall is one out of 4 new dwellings in the area. A family of 7 whom values living in close relation to the foreset in a rigid home. The layout of spaces are depending on a core of a thick wall that holds the most valuable functions. The private spaces are secondary to the main open rooms where the family may spend time together and cater for the daily daycare activity they care for.

08 - 12

DEFINITION OF SITE The site, a forest area of mixed pine trees, birches and bush vegetation. It is located between the mapped neighbourhood and a adjacent street with new built houses with slightly larger dimensions than the houses in our research from the 60-70 ties. The new dwelling is to be placed in this area and it will relate to the chain houses and the free-standing houses built in the 6070 ties and the new built street. The existing walk paths that crosses the area leads to a bus stop and a cross walk that goes to the lake on the other side, towards east. It is also a connecting path to Storsjรถhallen and further around the neighbourhood. The connection to the bus is an key point and access of importance as well as the walk paths are of value for the notion of transition through the neighbourhood. The trees on the plot are occupied by the children in the area, small shacks of whereabouts for playing are noticed. In the sense of coexisting this are have rich qualities for shared use from a child point of view.

To work with a site where the trees will affect the design and organization of spaces. The walk paths pedestrians shall experience the facade of the dwelling and its entrances so that it is clear in terms of privacy what the house occupants communicates outwards and inwards. The mapped result of the existing garden plot pattern and the street life condition as it has a certain static and non economic way of moving through; in my new dwelling I take this as a challenge to break up. The idea of a garden space marked out with boarder lines shall also be abandoned. The family have no urge to work with a lawn or flowerbeds, the importance is to let the outside space be the forest plot it is.

River stroll

Public parc, San Cugat, Spain/ Individual work The River stroll public parc aim to open up the golfcourse The assignement given was to make a strategy for how to open up the Golf course to public users while the golfers may keep their field for its purpose. The community of San Cugat lack public green areas, especially those who do not have a yard of their own. By changing the topography and a reconfiguration of the boundaries between the players at the golf and the bypassers the public pedestrians get the possibility to enjoy the green areas without disrupting the play of the golfers.

SITUATION PLAN

The River stroll public parc aim to open up the golfcourse The drought river that runs along the west side of the field is transformed so that a walking and biking path takes you along that side. The areas marked out as not used by the players become small park spaces to pause, overview the golf, accessed from the path. On the other side the pedestrian path is widened with double walkways, also with access to the

Notion of belonging

Mapping carried out during 2 weeks in Dharavi, Matunga Labourcamp /Individual work Observing daily life In this mapping I have been observing the street of Matunga Labourcamp. Due to the circumstances of privacy we were not allowed to draw any technical information but instead try to capture the atmosphere. During two weeks time I got familiar with the life and the people along the street. By focusing my attantion to the movement of people and the places where people choos to pause I have started to see patterns of where people feel comfortable to stay for a short or longer time.

The vibrant life on the street I step in to the neighborhood of Matunga Labour camp from the junction, 90 feet road and 60 feet road. As soon as I enter, the sound from traffic decreases, the street is covered with a roof shading the activities around me. Seven o clock in the morning entering the street, around 40 men are drinking chai along the street gathered around the walls, sitting on the plints that goes along the edges of the houses. The shops are closed and they are leaning against the closed doors.

PORTFOLIO.IDA WRESSEL/2017

17

Daily life along the street

After walking the same street for days up and down, I start to recognize people in the area and I can see patterns of behaviours. While starting to draw the outlines, the colours and the activities that add to the story of the peoples daily life some situations become more talkative than others. By focusing on the same situation, observed over time, I try to capture the movement and the moment. The objects in relation to the human body, the proportions of the street and the way people inhabit the space.

Social nodes - a gathering spot

The street is cramped as the group of people around the food stand grows. The social event around the eating is suddenly blocking the movement for the by passers. Even if not every one who stops is a customer to the food stand, the social attraction are around it is suddenly primary to the efficiency of passing through. While I am drawing, the old man sitting in front of his home is watching. We do not speak the same language, but when I show my drawing he is adding the numbers of the houses very precisely on the paper.

Observing and being observed

The woman is sitting on the doorstep, she is observing every one passing including myself, I can feel her eyes asking what kind of stranger am I walking in the street of her neighbourhood

PORTFOLIO.IDA WRESSEL/2017

18

The otla may be a place to pause

An “otla” It is a plinth that runs along the edge of the house or a store . From the mapping it shows that it serves many purposes and has a very important social function. The men occupying the plinth in front of the house have taken their shoes off as if they entered an inside of the public room.

Open doors means safety

The doors are always open and the door step just outside is called the “Otla” on which the ladies are sitting. The plinth has an very essential role in the daily life of Dharavi. It is the edge between the home and the street the threshold that may hold a conversation, shores, playing or just watching the people passing by while sipping on a cup of chai. A women is making flower decorations in fort go the big Temple, besides is a motorcycle parking for a school. A group of children in uniforms passes me, laughing shouting, waving hands. It is a steady stream of people moving along. Motorbikes passes, goods are carried on the heads of the women on their way to the market.

Finding an edge to lean on

The man resting on the tiny edge of the wall is in company of a group of children playing cricket. The life and play around him is carrying on as he rests. The nodes where the street open up have rounded corners and an other man resting on the edge seems to find comfort as he is taking a nap.

Water wise

Water awareness and education centre/ Bachelor project/ Individual work. The life around the water - an invaluable resource suffering from pollution Dharavi is an area of 1 sq km in the heart of Mumbai with 1 million people settled on what once was a marshland. There are many issues that related to the poor quality of water in the area and that is what I address in this project, Water Wise. The project aim to improve knowledge on how to treat the water resource wisely. It focuses on the educational part and public awareness through interaction. To achieve this the intention is to engage people on different levels in an area where there is an existing water resource and a strategic flow of bypassers. Situated on a route of many commuters the Water wise centre is a place to come for classes, a hub to fill your water bottle and see a demonstration o a filtering solution or buy equipment for your own home.

The ”Dhobis”

Pedestrians

The main users of the dhobi ghat. They have a old tradition of laundry work located in the ghat, washing laundry, suffering from the poor conditions of the water. Today only 5-7 families run the business of laundry, very few in comparison to the much more active business in the past.

Moving through the site on their way to and from Dharavi, crossing the bridge over the train tracks, the boarder between Dharavi and the greater Mumbai. Among the pedestrians are school children living in Dharavi walking to and from the school on the other side of the bridge and news paper readers whom stop in the news paper stall on their way through the site.

SITUATION PLAN

The Dhobi Ghat community

Dwellers who move and live around the ghat. The dwellers face the every day pedestrian traffic to and from Sion which affect their private sphere but is profitable for the commercial business along the street.

2

The Dhobi Ghat

The houses around the ghat, the water basin, are occupied by approximately five dhobi families and families from Maharashtra. Nobody has a private toilet within the house in the dhobi ghat, so they all rely on public toilets close by (especially women and children). Women and children are especially vulnerable when visiting the existing toilets due to the insecurity around the facilities.

The daily routine of most women in Dharavi revolves around water supply which is usually only an hour per day available. On average, fifteen families share a water pipe in the neighbourhood of dhobi ghat. The footbridge over the railway has a steady pedestradetrian traffic which is beneficial for the comercial face of the street but quite problematic in the way the flow of people make the street cramped and narrows the communities possibilities to expand their social sphere to the square.

Gish

Skellefteå Culture house and Hotel/ 2 months / Team work Gisch? The origin of the name is unfamiliar, but one may assume it comes from the dialect in Västerbotten. The meaning is for those who recognize it something that represents something similar to grunge or goo. It could have a negativity to it, such as the fresh mark of a fly crashed into the window or what is stuck in your eye after sleeping with your contact lenses on. But it can also be something positive like the cold sauce that gives your plate that fabulous extra to it, or the drop of oil that makes your bike spin again. - Shortly, Gisch is that little extra that we actually need.

Brief Competition arranged by the Swedish association of Architects, 2016 Project initiated and led by me as responsible for the outcome. Team members: Joar Mattson, student UMA, Hanna Ivansson, student UMA. The work was carried out in collaboration with Roland Lundberg (TM architects) and Johan Fjellström(Arkinova). Me as responsible for the outcome have been working full time with project along with Joar, other team members have been part of the working team but as supporting contributors. CULTURE HOUSE

A new culture house in the city of Skellefteå opens up to the possibility to invite the existing culture life to expand and grow. What we are careful to care for in this project is the already existing organisations; both professionals and local creative hubs. We aim to help and rise those individuals and organisations whom will move into the new building. But also open up to “Rivhuset” a unique hub next to the site whom would profit from new facilities, but are not in the program to be relocated into the house.

The Culture house shall act as an incubator for not only those whom act within the house but also for commune culture workers and visiting groups of culture groups. It shall be a meeting place for all layers of cultural activity, the cultural authentic and its diversity must sustain even though a new culture house is raising. The small craftsmen and the big sculptress shall act and grow side by side in a house that include and give room for everyone.

Seasons and squares In the northern part of Sweden people live with season changes; patterns of movement and activities change between summer, winter, spring and fall. The squres have a tendesy to bloom once the spring arrives but are quite empty in winter. It is therefore an important key to make the squares alive and accessable even when the sun only rises for a few hours per day. The new house defines by how it is situated on site small squares along the street, Trädgårdsgatan, where we suggest a new axis for pedestirans. The street becomes free from veichles to strenghten the footpassers abiliity to move between the culture house, the river and the close by city park. This gives great potential for shopkeepers to open up towards the street and expose their business towards Möjligheternas torg.

1

2

3

To unite the culture house and Möjligheternas torg the ground is layed out with a new foundation that link them together. Where the culture house faces Kanalgatan the trees are removed, the ground will be higher from streetlevel to slow traffic down and meet the Culture house. By that we put pedestians and bikers in focus and create a a new square in layed out in front of the new building. The organisation of spaces within the culture house are relying on a strong open core that makes it easy to orientate within the building. We have been striving to create many possibilities to have spaces for shared use by the various organisations whom inhabit the house. For example the Library square and the Theathre square open up possibilities to have shared use and host temporary gatherings. The library square may be opened up towards Trädgårdsgatan through the shop and café volume and becomes part of the square outside. It makes it possible to cater an audience during the Story telling festival or the local dance club when thouse kind of performences occur.

Rest for Fly

Biological variety in the city sphere/ 1 week/ Team work A need to increase the number of pollinators Insects are for many something unpleasant that you do not want to get familiar with, especially not in the city. By introducing the insect hotel we want to acknowledge how important the pollinators are for our survival as humans. Without them our existence would be possible since they are the key to keep consuming what grows, our food and the greeneries in our surroundings. Due to new methods in agriculture and new building materials in the cities and less green areas the insects decrease in numbers. Today we have 300 spices of wild bees in Sweden and 40% of these are red listed and 15 spices are already extinguish. The task was to design an insect hotel located in the park by the University of Stockholm. In order to full fill the biological needs of the insect the materials and measurements needs to be adapted to the natural habitat but also attract human visitors simultaneously.

The insect hotel is a place for insects to hibernate in the city during the winter period, in summer time it is there place to rest. The design aim to reduce the mental distance between city and nature and promote knowledge about the insects importance and life cycle. Humans may get closer to the insects visually and the insects get a place in the city adopted for their needs. The structure is inspired by the insects proportions; heavy body and light legs. We want to achieve an impression of that it almost looks unbalanced, the proportions between the heavy body and the light structure of the three legged construction.
