Gallery No. 1 • Integration

Demian Alejandro Martínez Demian Alejandro Martínez began his career in 1994 while working for Bruno Landa, learning laboratory techniques, visual expression and lightning. The following year he traveled from Buenos Aires to Mexico City. In 1996 he moved to Berlin, and there he continued studying photography and experimenting with theatrical photography. He returned to Buenos Aires and has been dedicated to teaching since 2002, however, he continues to work on his own projects in photography and video. His distinctions include first place in the contest organized by the Spanish portal www.portalsolidario.com.

This image was captured in the Palermo neigborhood of the City of Buenos Aires. According to its author, "the graffitti caught my attention right away. I think it represents a great synthesis between responsibility (rapid response) and the ever present possibility of transforming reality. I felt that the themes of integration and rejection were vividly expressed on the wall."

Osvaldo Alberto Palacios Urzúa Osvaldo Palacios Urzúa was born in Chile on March 9, 1959. He studied art at the University of Chile and has been working in advertising since 1978. In 1988 set up Taller Visual, his own workshop in which he designs and produces digital work covering all areas of commercial advertisement.

Raúl Patricio Luco Torres Raúl Patricio Luco Torres was born in Santiago, Chile on November 4, 1960. He has resided in Peru, and in Italy where he studied photography. He then moved to Stockholm before returning to Chile to work for the newspapers La Época and La Nación. His interest in photojournalism has motivatedhim to create studies and exhibitions on various subjects, all aimed to vindicate the indigenous traditions of Latin America. He is currently working on a personal project in Chile that examines themes like poetry, the human body, and the disappeared" victims, among others.

He studied Architecture and Fine Arts, and took several photography workshops at a Uruguayan photo club between 2000-02. He has exhibited individually three times, and among his awards are Second Prize at the National Photography Competition in 2001, and First Prize in the competition organized by the magazine Lamalapalabra in 2003.

Henry Agudelo Henry Agudelo Cano was born in Medellin, Colombia on July 7, 1958. He took the photojournalism workshop at the Gabriel García Márquez School for Journalism in Cartagena, and also took courses in digital technology. He has been a photojournalist for 22 years working for the newspapers El Mundo (Medellin), and El Tiempo (Bogota), and currently is the deputy photo editor at the newspaper El Colombiano (Medellin).

The daughter of a dead official breaks with protocol to give a final farewell to her assassinated father, who was killed by terrorist guerrillas in the town of Dabeiba, Colombia in 2002.

Manuel Salvador Saldarriaga Quintero Manuel Saldarriaga Quintero was born in Medellin, Colombia on October 19, 1969. He has worked as a photojournalist for the last thirteen years, and is currently on the staff of the newspaper El Colombiano, in Medellin.

Far down the Atrato River, in the Department of ChocĂł, in Colombia, there is a community of 68 families that live under constant threat of being displaced by terrorist groups who threaten their lifestyle. The children in this community dream of becoming either successful soccer players, or just someone important within the tribe.

Raquel Schwartz Raquel Schwartz was born in La Paz, Bolivia in 1963. She studied in the United States and Israel. She has exhibited individually and collectively in Bolivia and abroad, and has participated in international events such as the XXV Sao Paulo Biennial.

This typical scene was shot in the streets of Santa Cruz de la Sierra, a Bolivian city. Every day many children, like those in the picture, are born, eat, sleep and live without a home in Latin America. The incorporation of these families into a decent life is still a dream. It is our responsibility to make sure it happens.

Juan Manuel Calle Juan Manuel Calle was born in Bucaramanga, Colombia on June 5, 1949. He studied at Daytona Beach College and the New York Institute of Photography. In the mid 1990s he developed an interest in digital photography. He has taught at the Jorge Tadeo Lozano and Sergio Arboleda Universities, and Taller Cinco in Colombia. He is currently working on a book which gathers his recent work with digital photography.

The child in the photo is not playing but working as a juggler on the streets; he asks for whatever people wish to give him to help support his home. The economic reality of this kid deprives him of his freedom to play.

Gerardo Cháves Alonso Gerardo Chaves Alonso was born in Bogota, Colombia on July 28, 1950. He studied Social Communications at the Universidad de la Sabana. Since 1979 he has worked as photojournalist for the newspapers Magazín Deportivo, El Bogotano, and El Espacio. He has received several awards for his work in Colombia, among them, Best Graphic Story in 1997.

This photograph was taken in October, 2003 in El Cartucho, one of the most deprived and dangerous neighborhoods of Bogota, capital of Colombia. The people who lived in this area made a living recycling trash and trafficking drugs. The image shows the last day before people were evicted and the buildings demolished.

This photo was taken in Buenos Aires, in August of 2003 at the park honoring the memory of the "disappeared," the victims of the Argentine military dictatorship of 1976-1983. Martinez says that "the place was designed with many sculptures by artists from many countries. It achieves what an overload of information could not convey to me for years: a clean and direct connection with the human and national drama my country experienced. Perhaps the proximity of the River Plate and the breezes at dusk soothe the healing of scars that are still open. My photo attempts to make the viewer aware of such a possibility, supported by the combination of the art and nature."

Francisco Javier Pereda Beuchart Francisco Javier Pereda Beuchat was born in Santiago, Chile, on March 22, 1963. He studies architecture, geography, photography and film. In 1990 joined the newspaper El Mercurio, and worked for the magazines Caras, Cosas, and Paula, in Santiago. That is how he initiated his career as a photojournalist, visiting several countries In 1997 moved to Paris and worked as photographer for theater and dance companies. He traveled through Asia and Africa in the year 2000. He currently is back in Santiago where he works in editorial and commercial photography. In 2002 received Second Prize at the National Salon of Press Photography in Santiago.

Juan Britos Juan Britos was born in Asunciรณn, Paraguay, in 1967. He started studying photography in 1990. In 1992 he begun a photo essay on the Paraguayan Indians and the following year traveled to Buenos Aires where he worked for a year at Diario Popular. Back in Paraguay he has worked for several local media. He has exhibited half a dozen times and his most important award if the First Prize at the contest organized by the local magazine Accion.

The Toba Oom woman from the Cerrito community manually manufacture brooms with palm leaves. To obtain the material they must walk long distances and, when the brooms are ready, they walk back to sell them in the closest market.

María Alejandra Prieto Suárez María Alejandra Prieto Suárez was born in Santiago, Chile, on April 25, 1980. She is currently a Masters degree candidate in Visual Arts at the University of Chile. She has exhibited collectively at the National Fine Arts Museum and Santiago´s Metrorail art gallery.

In an igloo built with sugar cubes, the idea of "Home Sweet Home" is associated with photographic images, and carries the ideas of social stability and living harmoniously in a community.

Enzo Basso Enzo Renato Basso Carvajal was born in Santiago, Chile on August 23, 1948. He has been a professional photographer since 1977, and has developed his career in Canada and Chile. In Toronto he worked at the studio of Madison Photo Murals, and collaborated with Wim Vanderkooy, a Canadian photographer. He returned to Chile in 1980 and joined Paula magazine, working there for six years. In 1987 he opened his own photo workshop and has since dedicated himself since to commercial photography. In addition to his studio work, he is producing a book inspired by Pablo Neruda´s "Book of Questions."

Enzo Basso Name of the work: "Crecimiento sustentable" (Sustainable Growth) Country: Chile The humorous note of the contest is displayed indeed in this photo by the Chilean Enzo Basso. He combines the objectivity of commercial photography with the irony of social commentary.

Patricio Valenzuela Patricio Valenzuela was born in ValparaĂ­so, Chile in 1973. He studied advertising and professional photography at the Arcos Institute in Santiago. Since 1988 he has worked at photojournalist for the newspapers El Mercurio, El Metropolitano and Las Ăšltimas Noticias. He has developed photo essays on Andacollo and the religious festivities in Chile. He has exhibited individually seven times and has participated in several local competitions, receiveing first prize at a contest organized by the municipality of Coquimbo, where he lives now.

Patricio Valenzuela Name of the work: "Pirquinero" (Artisan Miner) Country: Chile A pirquinero is a miner who looks for gold more than 350 feet underground with primitive technology. This image was taken in the town of Andacollo, in the North of Chile, where most of its 10,000 inhabitants make their living directly or indirectly from this activity.

The image shows the irony between that which is sweet -sugar- and that which is bitter- the sugar cane harvest. The photo conveys a message of equity for the peasants who perform this back-breaking and poorly paid work.

Jaime William Muro Llosa Jaime William Muro Llosa was born in Lima, Peru on December 30, 1968. He studied and earned his doctorate in Communications and New Technologies from the University of Fortaleza. Currently he is Assistant Professor at the University's Center for Human Sciences, and also teaches Social Communication of the Ceará´s Universidad del Nordeste. He has been invited to serve as a juror at video and film festivals in Bolivia and Peru.

Jaime William Muro Llosa Name of the work: "Pescadores de luz" (Fisherman of Lights) Country: Peru This photograph of a "jangada" boat decorated with Christmas lights was taken in the Bay of Fortaleza, Ceará State, Brazil. "Jangada" is the name given to the local fishing boat that has become the State symbol. Fishermen earn extra money to support their families with these decorations over the holiday.

More than 28,000 runners participated, making it one of the most important national and international competitions. The photo captures the competitiveness shown by a physically challenged individual who demonstrates that in order to reach the finish line obstacles must be overcome.

Marcelo Alejandro Ortíz González Marcelo Alejandro Ortiz González was born in Chile on November 18, 1966. He is a graphic designer, photographer and painter. During his childhood he studied in Venezuela, and in Chile, he attended the Arcis Universtiy in Santiago.

Marcelo Alejandro Ortíz González Name of the work: "Competitividad" (Competitiveness) Country: Chile Competition is an ingredient in modern society that does little to promote integration and dialogue. Competition widens the gap between those who have the means to get a good education and those who do not. In this image the two large shadows projected on the pavement appear to leave behind a third one that represents those who lack the resources and possibilities for development.

Andrés Cánepa Blumenberg Andrés Canepa Blumenberg was born in Santiago, on January 21, 1962. He is a civil engineer specialized in structural engineering. He has been practicing photography for the last year and a half. In 2003 Agfa from Germany awarded him a Second Place to one of his works included in his website.

Andrés Cánepa Blumenberg Name of the work: "Pago de Mandas, Promesa" (Paying Back Promises) Country: Chile Paying promises to Our Lady of Mercy is a tradition in Chile. Each year, between December 7 and 8, more than 600 thousand people visit the temple in her honor. Many of them walk several days paying for a promise fulfilled. The woman in the photo, walking on her knees while carrying her small daughter on the back is one of them. She is being helped by the Civil Guard.

Claudio Jorquera Aceituno Claudio León Jorquera Aceituna was born in Santiago, on February 8, 1951. He is an educator and vocational facilitator. He holds a degree in Educational Planning from the University of the Americas. He is amateur photographer and from time to time collaborates with the Chilena newspaper Maipu.

Valparaíso is Chile´s main harbor. Commodities and tourists from all parts of the world enter Chile through it and the fruits of Chilean labor are exported from it. Aside this commercial activity, popular culture manifests itself in the boats with emblems and advertising that sail around the bay. They represent one of many facets of national identity.

Fernando Morales Aguirre Fernando Enrique Morales Aguirre was born in Santiago, on December 13, 1972. He studied photojournalism. He worked for six years at the newspaper La Naciรณn, and then for France Press and the AFP agency in Guatemala City. In 2001 one of his works was declared "Best of the month of February" by AFP and other was selected among the best of that year for NBC. He resides in Toronto, Canada.

Miguel Hechenleitner Hidalgo Miguel Leonardo Hechenleiter Hidalgo was born on April 26, 1957. He has a masters in Fine Arts from the Catholic University in Santiago. He is also a professional photographer with 20 years of experience in commercial and educational areas. Since 2000 he has his own photo studio. He was chief of the editorial section of the editorial Gestion. He received first prize at the national photographic contest organized by the Chilean-French Chamber of Commerce, which allowed him the opportunity to specialize in commercial photography at the Image Center in Barcelona.

Miguel Hechenleitner Hidalgo Name of the work: "Compañeros de travesía" (Traveling Companions) Country: Chile

The few members of the Kawesgar tribe that inhabit the canals of the Chilean Patagonia have settled in Puerto Eden, a small village of only 120 people. The dog or Kiurro is for them a loyal companion that in the past was also useful to hunt and keep warm.

Ricardo Sobol Ricardo A. Sobol was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1945. He started in photography in the early 1970s and since 1999 has been interested in digital photography. He has participated in group exhibitions in Latin America and Europe.

Daniel Benito Machado Hernรกndez Daniel Machado Hernรกndez was born in Montevideo, Uruguay on June 26, 1973. He studied Architecture and Fine Arts, and took several photography workshops at a Uruguayan photo club between 2000-02. He has exhibited individually three times, and among his awards are Second Prize at the National Photography Competition in 2001, and First Prize in the competition organized by the magazine Lamalapalabra in 2003.

Daniel Stoneck-Clogauer Daniel Stonek-Clogauer was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, on October 26, 1955, where he studied photography with a Uruguayan photo club. Since 1985 he has dedicated his efforts to portraiture and photography with social content. He established his own studio in 1993 when he received the Grand Prize at a contest organized by the Cooperativa Bancaria in Montevideo.

Jaime Aguilar Maya Jaime Aguilar Maya was born in Antioquia, Colombia in 1958, where he studied Social Communications. As a photographer he has participated in the XXXII and XXXV National Salons for Colombian Artists. He also produces video and documentaries.

Marcos Benítez Marcos Benítez was born in Asunción, Paraguay, in 1973. He studied Communication Sciences at the Catholic University in Asunción, and has attended art workshops with Olga Blinder, Livio Abramo, Luis Felipe Noé, Nuno Ramos, José Resende, João Rossi and Oscar Manesi, as well as film and video workshops. He has exhibited individually and collectively, and has received the Henri Matisse prize (2000), the Young Creator Award (1998), and first prize at the La Nación newspaper Young Artists Salon (1996), all in Asunción.

María Alejandra Prieto Suárez María Alejandra Prieto Suárez was born in Santiago, Chile, on April 25, 1980. She is currently a Masters degree candidate in Visual Arts at the University of Chile. She has exhibited collectively at the National Fine Arts Museum and Santiago´s Metrorail art gallery.

The Wassily chair is an icon of the Bauhaus School of Design. It was conceived with the positivist spirit that favored mass production and low cost. Today the chair has become an elitist object sold in limited edition at a high price. This version built with slabs of beef transforms the chair into an awkward and contradictory object that emphasizes the fragility of most of the utopias proposed by modernity.

Roberto Stephenson Roberto Stephenson was born in Italy, on May 12, 1964. He has lived in Syria, Jordan, United States, India and England, and currently resides in Port au Prince, Haiti. He studied engineering and graphic design, and has practiced photography for the last ten years, specializing in architecture. Today he is dedicated to commercial photography for local corporations. Many of his works have appeared in books and magazines. He has exhibited in Cuba, Norway, Haiti and the Dominican Republic, receiving a Gold Medal at the 2001 Biennial of Santo Domingo.

Ronald Chung Ronald Cheng was born in Trinidad on February 16, 1972. He was initiated into photography at age twelve, and in a parallel fashion developed his drawings abilities. During his youth he worked at the family's photography business on the weekends until he was 18 years old, then he joined the University of West Indies to study construction techniques. He has continued learning about photography and is now specialized in the restoration of old and damaged photos.

The photo corresponds with the corner of Lord and Mucurapo Streets, in the San Fernando neighborhood of Trinidad and Tobago. This photo is a digital recreation of a 1950s snapshot. The place has not changed very much since then.
