Gymnastic Gold by Caitlin Tsang 2012 has been my most successful year yet. It started off with the English Championships in March, where I earned a place in the England team for the Sainsbury's School Games. There I had a great experience, where I competed at the Excel Centre, and England won gold. I also spent a day watching athletics and swimming in the Olympic Park, which was very exciting! Later in the year, I competed in the British Championships, and I qualified for the beam final which took place two weeks later. In the beam final, I got to compete at the Echo Arena in Liverpool and it was a great chance to compete in front of a huge crowd. The atmosphere was spectacular and it was an amazing feeling to perform for so many people! Finally, my most recent competition was my first international representing Great Britain in Belgium. I spent four days there, and on the competition day, I finished first, competing against Canada, European countries and African countries. This year, I have participated in many more competitions, and gained more and more experience which will help me a achieve my goals in my gymnastics career.

Houses Coppice House—dream, believe, achieve Coppice House got off to a flying start this year with a visit from our house charity SNAP! – Special Needs Adventure Playground. The charity is close to our hearts as it is based in Cannock and we were delighted to welcome them to our school. So far this year Coppice House has taken part in supporting the charity through fundraising activities such as the Year 7 Disco held at Kingsmead, bag packing at Morrison’s supermarket and the Christmas Fayre at Kingsmead. Bag Packing On Sunday 9th December, Coppice students along with Mrs Davies and Miss Fittes donned bright yellow T shirts and rattled collecting buckets whilst packing customers’ shopping at Morrison’s supermarket. The staff made everyone welcome and we raised a whopping £580 for SNAP. New Year 7s September brought with it plenty of sunshine but also new students to the school in the form of the Year 7s.They looked fantastic in their new uniform and we are proud to welcome them to Coppice House and Kingsmead. They have settled in well and enjoyed the Disco put on for them. Christmas Fun On Friday 14 December, Coppice students visited SNAP! to help them put up Christmas decorations that were made at Kingsmead. Miss Turner worked with students who gave up their free time for this worthy cause. In addition, Coppice hosted a Christmas Fayre at Kingsmead and the other Houses were invited to set up stalls and raise money for their charities. The Fayre was extremely well attended due mainly to the fact the Mr Griffin and Mr Perry were singing Christmas carols! Congratulations! Well done to Jodie Taylor from Coppice House on her appointment as Head Girl at Kingsmead. We are so proud of you Jodie and know you will do a fantastic job! Congratulations to all of our elected prefects and to Erin Robinson and Liam Mason our House Captains, as well as Deputies Amy Garraton and Ashley Farmer. Finally, our Community representatives Tessa Baker and Courtenay Davies –these students are working incredibly hard in their new roles. A final mention must go to Megan Ellis (HT) who took part in The Right Stuff, an organisation set up by Staffordshire Police to work with young people in the local community. She visited Somerville, Boston USA and went to school there. Megan is a keen amateur boxer and trained with American students while over there.
Merry Christmas to all from Coppice House Mrs J Davies Head of House
Hayes House Since taking on the role of Head of Hayes House in September, I have been extremely impressed with the positive attitude and achievements of Kingsmead students. The House system has clearly had a strong impact on College life and has fostered a healthy competitive spirit. This is nowhere more apparent than in Hayes, where we recently took the lead in the House point competition for a number of weeks. I know it is only a matter of time before the House Cup belongs to us! A number of our tutor groups in Hayes House have volunteered to take assemblies, some before Christmas and some for next year. Heather Matthews, Georgia Wilson, Eve Hadley, Courtney Bailey, Danielle Adams and Charlotte Baker from Mrs Philpotts’s form gave a well planned and confidently delivered presentation about the Jewish holiday Sukkot and earned themselves 50 Vivos. Our recent Christmas Fayre stall has been a great success and very capably run by Emily Shaw, Charlotte Hoskins and Helena Pickerill. We had a tombola stall which proved very popular and has raised a substantial amount for our House charity. Many of our students in Hayes are achieving excellent results and achievement points. I would like to give special mention to the following students who have earned a very impressive amount of House points this term: Laura Greenwood, Rianne Martin, Rachel Cumberledge and Jamie Greenwood. While these students have done extremely well, they are not alone; many others are doing Hayes proud with their hard work and team spirit. I am also keen to point out the hard work done by Hayes tutors and their dedication to their tutor groups. Students have formed very good relationships with their tutors and often tell me of the positive atmosphere and interaction which goes on in the morning, something which I frequently see myself when I pay a visit to tutor groups. We have the talent, the determination and the ability to go far. Future plans for Hayes to demonstrate this include a ‘Kingsmeads got Talent’ style competition which we will be organising alongside Uxbridge House, which will no doubt showcase the amazing musical and performing skills of both Hayes House members and Kingsmead students as a whole. Mr P Bradbury Head of House
Houses Littleton House Welcome to Littleton. This is my first opportunity to write to you about the achievements of Littleton house and give you an insight into what the students have been up to. I am very proud of what the house has achieved over the last year. The students have been very busy and working extremely hard. Here is a taster of what they have been up to…….. House Captains/ Deputy House Captains The house has two new house captains and deputy house Captains these are Tom Parr and Jessica Evans in year 11 and Oliver Parker and Millie Pincombe in Year 10. They are all excellent candidates who wrote very strong letters of application and had to get through a tough interview process. I look forward to working with them this year. House Charity We raised £156 for our house charity, Riding for the Disabled. We did this by holding the ‘Littleton Mile’ Event where tutor groups competed against each other to collect the most amount of money and lay the longest line of coins. We then took a group of students to visit the stables in Ingestry to see what the money raised will be used for. Christmas Fayre Littleton students have worked hard during the autumn term to produce Christmas Cards which were sold at the Christmas Fayre. We decided that the hand made touch made people more interested in buying them. We also had handmade Christmas cookies which our year 11’s made and a raffle. The prizes were: 4 Tickets to a zumba class, KFC vouchers, a netball, a football, free shortbread for a week and a queue buster pass for the dining room. The money we raised will go towards the house charity, Riding for the disabled. Team Maths Challenge On Monday 3rd December over 100 students took part in our first ever Team Maths Challenge. The students got split into houses and teams within the houses. Each house had 6 teams, varying in years from key stage 3. The challenge consisted of 3 different rounds, each being a different challenge. Round one was just a team challenge. There was 6 questions and the teams had to work together to answer the questions, each covering a different maths topic. The second round was a mini relay, meaning each answer was vital in the next question. This round was split into two, Relay A and Relay B. The last round was a cross number. Similar to a cross word, teams had 3 minutes to answer the questions, which ranged in ability and they corresponded with the grid. Littleton cleaned up! We were the overall winning house, and we also had the winning team, which included James Taylor (Year 7), Gemma Parr (Year 9), Caitlin Tsang(Year 8) and Georgia Rose(Year 7). Especially well done to those four and to all that competed! Assemblies Throughout the year tutor groups present various assemblies to the house covering a wide variety of themes. So far…..RM and HU teamed up to produce an assembly on Sukkot, a Jewish festival that commemorates the years that the Jews spent in the desert on their way to the Promised Land, Miss Mehmi then came up with the idea of the students focusing on how, in a range of countries people today are faced with the problems of starvation and a lack of water. Students split up into groups to find out about some specific countries, ranging from those in the developing world and finishing with the UK, which has many people who suffer from poverty, unable to buy enough food. PCM also researched and delivered an Assembly on the Buddhist and Hindu aspects of Asura. They established that Asura work in conjunction with ‘Divas’. Asuras represent the devilish side to people’s characters and Divas the side of reason. The tutor group acted out and narrated an amusing sketch to the house in which the message was that there is usually the opportunity to think twice and to make the right choice. As you can see the students in Littleton have been working really hard and have achieved a great deal. I am very proud of each and every one of them. I am looking forward to 2013 and to see what the New Year brings. Who knows…… we may even win the house cup!! Mrs K Greenwood Head of House
Valley House This term has been a very successful for one for Valley House. The new Year 7 students have been welcomed into their tutor group and many have delivered presentations in tutor time to their peers about the 4Ps or current affairs. Tutor times in Valley House have seen a wide range of activities take place. Year 12 Sixth Form students delivered a presentation about their e experience of starting in the Sixth Form, which was well received particularly by year 11 students but which allowed all students the opportunity to find out more about what being a sixth form student at Kingsmead was all about. Sixth from students in V-AH, V-JW and V-JS organised a collection of a wrapped gift box which was distributed around local care homes, a refuge and some individual local residents. Many assemblies this term have been led and organised by students. Students in V-LL produced a fascinating assembly about Navratri and V-JWs assembly about Sangha day proved very interesting and thought provoking. On both occasions, students in these tutor groups were assisted by students in other tutor groups, and special thanks go to Mrs Lord and Mrs Williams for their help in organising the assemblies. In October students in Valley House had a very interesting assembly from Amy Johnson of Katherine House Hospice, about the work the hospice does and how students could get involved to help raise money for the Hospice. The result has seen two students in particular help raise money for the charity. On December 2nd Lacey Stevens raised £430 by taking part in the Winter Walk and Alice Sewell assisted by Alexandrea Rodulfa and Rebecca Purchase, produced homemade jewellery that was sold as part of the Valley House stall during the Christmas Fayre. Another notable achievement, Alexandrea Rodulfa, Year 11, recently took part in the Mary Moss Music Festival and won the junior category with her vocal and piano performance of ‘We Are Young’. On the sporting front, Lois Brindley has continued to represent Hednesford Town U13 Girls, playing a starring role in a recent 15-1 victory over Walsall Ladies . The end of term achievement assembly recognised those students whose attendance, attitude to learning and achievement have been excellent since September. Particular mention goes to James Statham, Cassie Gilbert and Chloe Pritchard who won the awards for outstanding. achievement. Valley’s Head of House Mr Broomhall would like to wish everyone connected with Valley House a Merry Christmas and hope that 2013 will see students in Valley House continue with their success from this term.
Mr Broomhall
Houses Uxbridge House Welcome to the Uxbridge. Well, what a busy and successful first term we have had. First of all I must congratulate our new year 7s for the fantastic way they have settled into school life, and really started to get involved in extra-curricular activities. In our recent achievement assembly we were able to celebrate this success. A couple of notable mentions were Carl Corns and Grace Round, who have both settled in brilliantly and are making fantastic progress, Carl has been busy entertaining his tutor group with his brilliant magic tricks and Grace has really shown great commitment to extra-curricular work in the Hockey teams. Well done you two. a
We were also able to award lots of 100% attendance certificates and reward excellent ‘Attitude to Learning’ We had a very successful first half term, yet again winning the half termly House cup, following on from winning the end of Year House Cup at the end of last academic year. This goes to prove what a great bunch of kids we have in Uxbridge, always working hard and getting involved. Keep those House points coming in! We have had some great assemblies this year. In October, U-LR and U-NT led an assembly celebrating ‘Navratri’ a Hindu festival. It was lovely to see so many students taking part on stage presenting. In November U-HB and U-AP presented an assembly celebrating ‘Sangha Day’ again with lots of students involved. It was particularly nice to see Kieran Hardwick from U-AP as a mini Buddha surrounded by lots of colourful lights and candles, a moment he will treasure I’m sure. Our House charilty ‘The Midland Air Ambulance’ is always at the forefront of our thoughts and activities. We have raised money through our cash collection boxes, the year 7disco and our most recent venture ‘Cash for Clothes’ We are going to extend the deadline for this so please send in any old but re-usable clothes into school, we’ll sell them and send the money to the Air Ambulance. The Christmas Fayre raised a good sum of money where we were entertained by Mr Perry and Mr Griffin who sang Christmas Carols beautifully. Thank you to U-RP for the reindeer stall and U-LR for the Christmas Orangutan (Don’t ask!!) Some notable achievements for students in Uxbridge are the five indoor hockey lads who played brilliantly in a west Midlands tournament. Callum Warren, Jordan Warren, Fabian Smith, Tom Beach and Charlie Walker. Well done lads you were brilliant. We also need to say a big well done to Kieran Hardwick for singing a solo so beautifully in the Christmas concert and to Ellie Dewsbury for once again entertaining us with her unique vocal talent and opening the concert in such a professional way. It has been a busy but rewarding term and even though individual regularly work hard, contribute and make me smile every day. again this year.
students in Uxbridge have been mentioned I am very proud of all our students who Well done Uxbridge people, keep up the good work and let’s get that cup in green ribbons Mrs D Collins Head of House
Wimblebury House It has been a busy first term with so many new challenges for us all and I am extremely proud of how Wimblebury students have risen to these challenges. It is a pleasure to work with the Wimblebury students, as they are fun, charismatic, polite, well mannered, smart and supportive of each other. It has been an absolute pleasure to join them during their registration times and see just how well they are working with each other and their Tutors. I was especially proud that we were able to use a video of Mr Coles form in action as an exemplar of our tutor times at the Y7 Parent Partnership Evening. Wimblebury assemblies have seen Mr Ryder and Mrs Simmonds Forms delivering two fantastic assemblies along the themes of Navratri and Sangha Day and in the New Year we are looking forward to welcoming the charity representative from Breathe Easy who will be coming to meet the students and deliver an assembly about our new chosen charity (more about this later). The weekly inter-form quiz is still participated in with great enthusiasm and debate about who should have won! Every Friday, there are students working together in registrations to get their entries completed and running their quiz sheets across the school in the hope of winning the weekly ‘sweets’ prize. It is a hard fought contest with Mr Vyse’s form lately having a run of luck, though RDC and DK are catching them up. We have been running an achievement points competition this year and SBU have won this more times than any other form group having collected between them all over 900 VIVOS in the first term! Wimblebury house has taken part in the Y9 Maths Challenge though Littleton took the title we gave it our best shot! In November, Wimblebury students voted to change the House Charity to Breathe Easy. Breathe Easy is a charitable organisation which provides support to people with lung conditions and their families. Students and Wimblebury staff have been busy making Christmas tree decorations for the Breathe Easy Christmas Tree on display at St Luke’s Church in Cannock. Additionally students have generously donated loose change to raise money. Our students are currently working together to make bracelets to sell at the charity Christmas fair on December 13th and 14th and all proceeds will go to the Breathe Easy Charity. On the sporting front there have been many achievements including:Y7 Molly Bruton is a regular member of the College Year 7 team has been selected to train with the Y7 Boys District Football Team. A first for the school. Sophie Jennings has recently gained her golfing handicap. Joshua Oakes, Lewis Powell and Nathan Traat were all part of two Y7 and Y8 teams who participated in the Staffordshire Table Tennis Tournament and came first and second. This qualified us for the County Table Tennis tournament where Joshua Oakes formed part of Y7 and Y8 team who represented the school playing well in the group stages although they did not progress to knockout rounds. As I said at the beginning of this article Wimblebury students are proving themselves to be very supportive and compassionate students as recently proven by Emily Phillips and Kayleigh Ghent who arranged a collection for the victims of Hurricane Sandy, as they felt strongly about supporting families affected by the devastation caused. It is this kind of care for others and initiative that sums up Wimblebury students, and is one of the many reasons that I am so proud to be their House Head. I would also like to mention Year 10 student Megan MgGahan who has taken part in a Christmas Concert as part of her D of E Bronze Award and continues to progress towards achieving her Bronze level. Y11 are working hard, attending Saturday mornings, revision sessions, completing Maths resits and keeping up to date with coursework and exam work. Future projects will see us develop our Media team and using this team to publicise our achievements and key activities. I also look forward to seeing the new House Council take shape and further represent our student voice this year. Mrs C Underwood Head of House
Wider School Projects On Tuesday 4th December 2012 we had the opportunity to take part in a ‘Japanese Shibori Textile’s Workshop’. The first technique we learned was called ‘heat set shibori’, which is a bead technique. Shibori is a Japanese word that refers to a variety of ways of embellishing textiles by shaping and manipulating cloth / fabric and securing before dying. The fabric was a synthetic fibre fabric which we wrapped objects in tightly using a very strong nylon fabric. You have to apply a lot of pressure and wrap objects very tightly. After all this was in place the fabric was boiled for approximately 40 minutes. This helps the fabric keep the shape. We then had to let the fabric dry out thoroughly before unwrapping the objects.
Japanese Shibori Textiles Workshop 4th December 2012 Student Write up by Year 9
Another technique we learned was ‘Maki-age Shibori’ meaning stitch and bound technique. This process involved hand stitching then pulling and manipulating fabrics into different shapes. We then used dye and soaked the fabric. The workshop taught us that we could use the simplest of objects to create anything and that anything can inspire you to create something which is imaginative and creative. We found the workshop beneficial, enjoyable and fun. It has made us look at everyday household objects in a new way. It has opened our eyes that we could use anything in our art work. We thoroughly enjoyed it and Jane was so helpful. She shared so much with us and it was great workshop.

Sixth Formers at Kingsmead show the true meaning of Christmas Short Stories:
The Sixth Formers at Kingsmead were hard at work on Wednesday 12th December wrapping up parcels of gifts to distribute to the local community. The parcels were filled with food, toiletries, clothing and, of course, chocolate. The Sixth Form students worked with their tutor groups to collect items; They had to make a presentation to the group and then co-ordinate the collection of items. The gift wrapping party was great fun, with many students getting involved with gift wrapping boxes and sorting the collected items into suitable parcels. The students got quite competitive over the quality of the wrapping and even the designs on the boxes; One gift was finished with antlers and a red nose! On Wednesday 19th December the boxes will be/were delivered to people in the local community having decided to deliver boxes to various Nursing Homes. Maths Challenge .
Ks3 students took part in the Team Maths Challenge on Tuesday 4thy December 2012 with Littleton students contributing to their House Win!!
