Kingsmead School Uniform Policy Kingsmead is a uniformed school and there is a clear expectation that students will wear full uniform and wear it appropriately. Parents are expected to support the school with this. Uniform is worn in Years 7 to 11 and there is a dress code for sixth form students. Items specific to Kingsmead are only available through the school and are sold without any profit to the school to achieve the lowest price for quality uniform possible. Items which are not specific to Kingsmead can be purchased from any supplier of school uniform.

The main reasons for having a school uniform are that it: • • • •

promotes a sense of pride in the school and a sense of community and belonging; identifies students with Kingsmead both in school and in the local community; is practical and smart; makes students feel equal to their peers in terms of appearance and financial circumstances.

All items of uniform should be clearly marked with the student’s name.

We expect students to wear: • • • • • •

The official Kingsmead black school blazer with embroidered badge.

Kingsmead House tie.

Straight black school trousers (not hipsters, jeans or leggings) or a straight or pleated black school skirt (within 2”/5cm of knee length) – this must not be very short or a close fitting style.

Plain white school shirt with a buttoned neck capable of taking a tie and long enough to be tucked into trousers or skirt.

Plain black, grey or white socks or plain black or skin coloured tights.

Plain black footwear with low heels – these should not have white or coloured soles, coloured laces, or large logos (such as Nike ticks). Canvas shoes should not be worn. Plain black leather looking boots may be worn under trousers (not suede). Plain black pumps will be provided for students who arrive in inappropriate footwear.

In addition they may wear: • • • • • •

Plain black V-necked long sleeved or sleeveless jumper or waist length cardigan (with buttons, no zips).

An appropriate outdoor coat to travel to and from school (we would encourage this).

Plain black belt with conventional buckle worn through belt loops (no fashion belts or large buckles).

A wristwatch (we would encourage this), one plain ring and up to one small stud in each lower ear lobe.

Clear nail polish and discreet make-up for students in Year 10 and 11 (students will be expected to remove any excessive or inappropriate make-up).

One Charity wristband of a standard size and with a Charity name clearly marked.

We do not allow students to wear: • • • • • • •

Hooded tops (except as part of PE kit) or hats/caps. These will be confiscated and returned at the end of the day.

False nails, nail extensions or coloured nail polish.

False eyelashes.

Bracelets and bangles.

Visible body piercings other than up to one small stud in each lower ear lobe (see below).

Hair Whilst it is difficult to clearly define hair styles and colours, it is important to maintain smart appearance and high standards. Bright hair colours (e.g. bright pink, blue, green etc.) and extreme hair styles (e.g. shaved patterns including tramlines, mohicans) are not permitted. Students should not have several hair colours. Students will be expected to rectify any inappropriate hair styles/colour. If in doubt, students should consult NJR before having their hair cut/coloured.

Piercings Body piercing (including but not limited to tongues, lips and eyebrows) is not appropriate and is a Health and Safety concern. Students who wear such piercings will be asked to remove them.

Refusal to remove piercings at school may result in internal exclusion or the student being sent home. One ear stud in each lower lobe is the only exception to this. Ear stretching jewellery such as spacers and spikes should not be worn.

Parents are asked to arrange appointments for piercing at the beginning of long holiday periods to enable removal of piercings in school. There are a number of suppliers of clear plastic alternatives to metal piercings which are acceptable. In PE lessons, students will be required to remove ear studs/plastic piercings for health and safety reasons.

Physical Education If you are in any doubt about what is/is not permitted, please check with the PE department beforehand.

All items of PE kit and equipment should be clearly marked with the student’s name.

No jewellery or piercings to be worn. Long hair must be tied back.

The school has a stock of PE kit which can be loaned out for a lesson. This is regularly cleaned and laundered. There is an expectation that, if a student does not bring their kit, they will wear the kit provided without argument. Refusal to comply may result in the student being internally excluded and the parent(s) will be contacted.

Students who do not wear the correct PE kit will receive a uniform infringement (see Sanctions below).

Rewards We want to reward those students who are consistently adhering to the uniform policy. Every half term the names of all students who have not received a uniform infringement will be place in a prize draw. Five winners will be drawn and each receive 500 VIVOs. In addition, each House will be awarded 5 House points each half term for every student who receives no uniform infringements.

Sanctions The school has a stock of uniform which can be loaned out temporarily for the day in the event that a student arrives at school without an item of uniform or with an inappropriate item. This is regularly cleaned and laundered. There is an expectation that, if a student is asked to wear this uniform, then they will comply without argument. Refusal to comply may result in the student being internally excluded and the parent(s) will be contacted.

Students who do not wear the correct uniform or wear uniform in an incorrect way will receive a uniform infringement from which is recorded electronically. Five uniform infringements will result in a 45 minute School Detention after school.

Confiscated items will be kept in a safe place. The school will decide how long the item is confiscated for. Usually this is until the end of the day but if the issue is persistent this may be longer or only returned to the parent when they come into school to collect the item.

Notes Suit jackets must be worn as outer jacket before a coat is introduced.

Trousers must be full length and tailored style, no leggings or cropped trousers or shorts allowed.

Material should be plain – no denim allowed.

Skirts must be of a modest length and allow freedom of movement around school.

Tops must be of a suitable, non-see-through material with a modesty of neckline.

Length must ensure complete covering of midriff.

Footwear must be suitable to maintain work appearance. No trainers.

In order to maintain an appropriate dress code whilst allowing our Sixth Form students the privilege of wearing their individual choice of suit, and access to a modern working wardrobe, the school reserves the right to send home any student who fails to meet our standards. It is suggested that students studying Art or Design courses wear an overall or apron in order to protect their clothing.

Kingsmead School Mobile Phones and Other Electronic Devices Policy Mobile phones and other electronic devices should only be used at break and lunchtime unless otherwise directed by a member of staff in a lesson. They should not be used during lesson changeover. Headphones should not be visible during lessons or lesson changeover.

Phones/electronic devices brought into school remain the responsibility of the student. If for any reason they are confiscated by a member of staff then the school will take responsibility for their safety until returned. The school will decide whether the item is returned to the student or the parent.

Phones should not be used to take photos or videos in school. If a student is seen taking photos or videos then they will be expected to delete them immediately in the presence of a member of staff.
