JOHN BAGSHAW’S INDUSTRY VIEW On the back of the first ever Ideal Industry Report, John Bagshaw takes a moment to sit down and reflect on its findings. He shares his views on the industry’s uptake of the internet, the growing demand for own-brand and how service underpins everything. Q. Last year you conducted the first ever Ideal Industry Survey and released the first Ideal Industry Report. Why was this a priority for the business? We thought that we should engage more with our customer base and find out how they felt about industry trends. Modern technology has allowed us to collect that information in ways that we simply couldn’t in the past. There are lots of different bits of information in many peoples’ heads so we thought that if we could pool it, it would make us, and the industry, more aware of its standing. Then we could tailor our strategy to customer needs.
Q. Why do you think the bathroom industry has been slower than others when adapting new ways of generating business? I’m not sure it is slow. The internet is an area that many independent traders have been drawn to. Many build their strategy around word of mouth and a strong reputation, and that’s how they flourish. I think if we’d have asked the question a few years before the answer would have been much different. I think customers are realising their audience like choice and feel comforted by searching online. Once that realisation happened, I think the uptake has been quite quick.
Q. The survey showed increasing demand for own-brand products. What does this say about the industry and what does it mean for brands? The customer and end users are looking for good design and value for money. I think the internet has made people more knowledgeable about what products are available. Brands need to understand our customer and end users and adapt their strategy to them. It’s important to move with the times, and I’m seeing that.
4
Q. The survey also showed that end users value strong customer relationships, professional reputation and aftersales service. Do you agree? Absolutely. You’ve got to be available and knowledgeable, and you need to handle customer enquires almost immediately. Customers today place a massive value on that. So much so that it’s informed how we set our business up. I think those key points really differentiate businesses. They have certainly been the points we’ve used to inform our strategy and be number one in the industry.
Q. If you had to choose a single key takeaway from the Ideal Industry Report, what would it be? I was very pleased with the level of engagement, and somewhat surprised with some of the findings. We’re going to do more of it so we can measure ourselves against customer expectations and give our customers what they want.

A new standard for furniture
The right quiet pump
New and improved Concept Space furniture
Salamander Pumps launches its latest product
Ideal Standard has announced an update to its Concept Space furniture specification to offer new, improved material and construction. The material specification has been upgraded to Melamine faced chipboard (MFC) which will make the furniture more durable. Melamine offers many advantages, both in the manufacturing process and as a final piece of durable furniture. All five finishes previously offered will continue to be offered as options in the new material. A painted lacquer replaces the gloss white and gloss grey foil wrapped finishes. This painted gloss white finish provides an improved colour match with the ceramics. Other improvements include the addition of pre-drilled holes for handles, which reduces the chances of error during installation. The hinges have also been upgraded pieces to a higher spec, soft-close mechanism.
Salamander Pumps has re-engineered its centrifugal range of shower, bathroom and whole house pumps, launching them under the new Right Pump label. The range replaces the company’s former ESP, RHP, RSP and RGP range. Benefits include noise reduction, crossover technology™ (which allows the former RSP ‘shower only’ pumps to power the whole house), and the inclusion of a ‘spider web’ design to strengthen the plastic end caps. The electronic system protection has also been improved and independent testing showed the RP50PT to be the quietest twin-ended plastic shower pump available on the UK market. Tough taps for tough areas Armitage Shanks Utility collection is made to last
Upping the tempo with new options Ideal Standard has extended its popular Tempo range Designed by Robin Levien, the Tempo range combines soft rounded curves with flat topped rims to create the perfect mood for the modern bathroom. The first addition is a new mini basin mixer, which has been scaled down proportionately to the size of hand rinse basins to ensure they fit together. Small and perfectly formed, it measures 121mm high (8mm shorter than standard) and with a 120mm projection (19mm less than standard) which makes it perfect for use with 400mm hand rinse basins. The second major addition is the introduction of a new Tempo 170x80cm idealform Plus+ bath, which addresses the markets requirement for a slightly wider bath size that is still a standard length. It will only be available in Idealform Plus+ material, Ideal Standard’s higher specification material that is stronger, giving double the rigidity and improved heat retention properties.
Hard-working areas need hardworking taps – and they don’t come tougher than the new and improved Armitage Shanks Utility collection. GIVING AIR ARC AN AIRING
Ideal Standard, the leading provider of innovative and design-driven bathroom solutions, has now extended its successful Concept Air range with the launch of Concept Air Arc. This new collection, available in the UK from April 2017, extends and enhances their already comprehensive Air range with a new basin shape and cistern options.
Elegant, Fine And Light Originally launched in 2016, the Concept Air collection created a real buzz with its new slim edged design, thin ceramics and the huge array of choice, solutions and configurations the suite offers to the customer. It was the latest evolution of the hugely successful and ever-popular Concept range developed by award-winning designer Robin Levien and his acclaimed team. As the name implies, Concept Air is all about lightness and providing a combination of
14
practicality and affordable luxury. It taps into the minimalistic home design trend for sleek, slimline interiors which can now extend to include the bathroom.
Concept Air Arc washbasins and cisterns enhance the opportunities of the suite as a whole and work seamlessly with the existing core pieces already launched.
Taking it to the next level
All round appeal
Now, building on the popularity of Concept Air and further enhancing the offer, Ideal Standard has launched the next phase of the suite for 2017 – Concept Air Arc.
The addition of Arc to the already extensive Concept Air collection ensures a diverse, high quality range that offers choice and style to everyone, regardless of the size of a bathroom space. The wide range of complementary furniture to accompany the ceramic options means there are now both floor standing and wall-hung options.
This new range is the natural progression to its Arc and Sphere shapes within the standard Concept portfolio. The design ensures the additional product options that Concept Air Arc brings mirror the fresh, light design of the Cube basins with thin ceramic walls and shallower depths while keeping some of the inner DNA of existing Arc and Sphere basins, which has made the suite so successful since its launch in 2008. Research shows that D shaped, curved basin shapes are still the most popular in the UK and the modernity and lightness of Arc takes this conventional shape to the next level. The close-coupled toilet suites are extended to offer Arc shaped cisterns to give extra choice and complement the new basin shape.
With its stunning vanity units, choice of drawers or open shelving, a stylish cube basin unit for smaller cloakrooms and a unique floor standing vanity unit with drawers, the versatile Concept Air range offers luxury design without a premium price tag. Space efficient, flexible, and stylish, the furniture is available with open shelves, or to keep your space calm there are soft close drawer options. The Concept Air furniture range also comes with a choice of six colour combinations,

To complete the bathing range there is a shower bath which is beautifully light in design, hugely versatile and has a soft, arcing backrest to provide the ultimate in bathing comfort. AN INSIGHT INTO NUANCE BUSHBOARD We’re very proud to welcome our new partner, Bushboard, and their “Nuance range to Ideal Bathrooms. We’re always keen to work with high quality brands and Nuance are the preferred brand in the wall panelling category.
Last year we carried out our very first Industry Report, which gave us a fantastic insight into our customers’ needs. One area that came as real interest to the business was the evident growth in wall panelling; 66% of customers already sold panelling, which meant there was a great opportunity to sell this product to the remaining 34%. Even more impressively, when asked about their best-selling brands, it was great to see Nuance rated as the most preferred brand in the wall panelling category.
66%
IDEAL INDUSTRY REPORT 2017 Wall panelling
It felt like a wonderful opportunity for the number one distributor to partner with the number panelling brand.” - Danielle Lillis, Commercial Director
Bushboard’s Commercial Director, Neil Horton, gives us an insight into the new partnership with Ideal Bathrooms as well as the changing trends in the showering market landscape.
Q. Why did you decide to partner with Ideal? We’ve had a successful relationship with sister company International Decorative Surfaces for well over ten years. The basics of good business have been the cornerstones of our success together; supporting the retailer and installer with clever products that are easy to sell, install and make good margins; alongside great availability nationally with local service and back up. We’re looking forward to replicating this with Ideal.
Q. What are the latest trends within the bathroom market? Bathroom design is very personal so it’s important that we give designers a full palette to work from. When it comes to developing new ranges, we follow general interior trends and run focus groups to make sure the designs give our market what it wants. Matt textures are really grabbing attention right now, although glossy still sells well. There’s also a trend for weathered timbers, concrete and soft greys which re-purpose the desire for natural and neutrals which complements the ongoing demand for luxuriant granite and marble.

THE IDEAL BATHROOM | The latest marketplace news
Q. What are the latest developments in the showering market? Consumers are increasingly looking at ways to heighten their showering experience through walk-in showers and wet rooms which links to the choice of surfacing material for both practical and aesthetic purposes. There’s a strong style trend for streamlined surfaces and laminate panels have created a freedom of design never before thought possible. With their near invisible jointing and the spectrum of granites, marbles, weathered timbers and concrete, retailers really are looking at laminate in a new light now, not only because of its high design capability but also the installation benefits over tiling.
Q. What is the current state of the market and what are the drivers for growth? The market is very strong at the moment and growing fast. The debate over Brexit doesn’t seem to be putting people off their bathroom projects and we’re seeing a lot of confidence in our retail base. More and more consumers and retailers now regard wall panelling as a design alternative to tile and grout and this is driving sales very significantly.
Q. How have the changing demographics of UK households and the ageing population impacted the market? More and more people are planning their bathroom with the future in mind. We’ve seen an increase in level access
wet rooms for ease of use as we grow older with panelling being the ideal solution for easy maintenance and mobility in larger shower areas. Bushboard’s Nuance was designed with bathing and shower encloses in mind, with no need for unsightly trims and a waterproof core making it ideal for wet rooms.
Q. What tools do you provide to help your retailers sell? Regular contact and engagement with retailers is really what Bushboard are all about and we offer a range of tools to help our retailers showcase our products in the best possible light. Our well-designed point of sale sample stands home our quality brochures with stunning lifestyle photography. We also offer display deals for retailers to get the product into actual room sets to show Nuance’s full capability, and our stats show that those who do, sell three times more than those who don’t. The design guide in our brochure helps the retailer put more wow into their display, from half height concepts to sleek internal and external corners without metal trims,
all supported by Nuance’s full range of coordinating and matching vanity surfaces in laminate and solid surfaces. We also support home owners with the new bathroom design tool on our website which allows them to play with colour schemes and helps them in their decision-making either at home or with their designer in the showroom.
Q. Are all your products made in the UK? Yes, and have been since 1935! Our 180,000 square feet state-of-the-art facility is based in Northamptonshire. For more information visit www.bushboard.co.uk

PART OF THE CLUB
Paul Stott, Health and Safety Manager with Directors of the business
The Wakefield warehouse team
To become a member of any millionaires club is pretty special. But to qualify for membership of the SaintGobain Millionaires Club is very prestigious indeed. The entry requirements are more exacting than most. Forget super yachts or huge bank balances, this is a club that’s exclusively for the super-safe. In fact there are only 259 businesses around the world, only 20 of them in the UK, who qualify for membership. Members must be able to prove that they have clocked up either 1,000,000 worked hours without a lost time accident, or 5 years without a lost time accident anywhere within their workforce. They also need to comply with a variety of extensive EHS and ESPR safety auditing requirements.

Ideal has bagged millionaire status by putting the safety of staff before anything else. Over the past three and a half years we have introduced new safety protocols and developed a culture where people feel happy to share their views on potential safety hazards before they become an issue.

How do you achieve millionaire status? To qualify for millionaire status, you need to reach 1,000,000 working hours without an accident where a staff member needs to take time off work. The Hayes warehouse team
We have introduced Safety At Work (SAW) which is a tool where staff can report any incidents that they deem to be unsafe but aren’t able to deal with themselves. This means that the problem is reported and dealt with before it becomes an accident and gives staff the confidence to report issues, no matter how small, because they see that it is working in benefitting their safety. We are also constantly sharing best practices on safety within the business so other branches can take care of their environment.

Time to celebrate We provided all Ideal staff with a buffet lunch, complete with cupcakes, to say thank you for all their hard work and gave staff out on the road a gift card so they didn’t miss out. We also gave staff a new polo shirt to wear for work and a commemorative pen to serve as a talking point and remember their achievement for safety within the business.
Anyone for cake?
Next steps? Now we’ve achieved millionaire status, the work doesn’t stop. We are constantly aiming for gold, reviewing our practices towards health and safety and putting our staff first. The Milton Keynes warehouse team
“We have a very strong focus on the health, safety and wellbeing of our staff. We always strive to set the industry standard in every aspect of our business and reaching millionaire status is an achievement we’re incredibly proud of.” Andy Marshall - National Logistics Manager

WELCOMING STEVE HENEY ABOARD
Q. Steve, you’ve worked for Q. Ideal has plans to grow the Saint Gobain Group for its sales team. How is it 14 years, can you tell us a expanding, and why? bit about your background? We’re currently in the process of Yes, I’ve been employed in a number of roles within the group including Graham The Plumbers’ Merchant, and I’m delighted to have now joined Ideal as Head of Sales. They are the best distributor in the industry and it’s a great time to join as the company just seems to go from strength to strength. We’ve got some exciting developments in the pipeline, not least our new website which is superb.
Q. Ideal strive to put customers at the heart of everything they do, especially when it comes to sales. What’s your ethos as a salesperson? First of all, it’s about being friendly, helpful and personable. Every day we should be looking for ways to add value to each customer and help their businesses to grow. It’s also imperative that we liaise with all external and internal contacts to ensure the very best support for customers. It’s also about appreciating the customer, and never forgetting that without them, we wouldn’t have a business. But above all, I think being a good salesperson is about always keeping your promises and fulfilling commitments in full.
30
recruiting two new sales managers to fill existing vacancies. Obviously, we want to do this as quickly as possible, but we’re prepared to wait until we find exactly the right people. Only the best will do for Ideal. Within our team we also have two graduate trainees who have done extremely well and are starting to add real value, and following that success we’re looking to add two more in the near future. This is an important step as it not only adds value to the team right now, but will strengthen it in the longer term too, adding consistency and longevity. That can only be a benefit to our customers.
Q. So what can customers expect from the Ideal sales team under your leadership? Good question! I’ve only been in the role for a couple of months, but I’m already really impressed with the quality of the team I’ve inherited. They’re all highly capable individuals who are totally committed to helping to grow our customers’ businesses. They’ve all been very positive and supportive and I’m genuinely looking forward to working with them in the future. With a couple more people to fill those gaps and some small adjustments, I think we’ll have a great team of people here.
If I had to highlight my main objectives it would simply be to ensure that we have a happy and successful sales team that consistently exceeds and delights our customers.
Q. So the happiness of the sales team is an important aspect of the service they deliver to customers? Yes, absolutely. When they are sitting in front of their customers on a dayto-day basis I want them to feel that they’ve got all the tools they need and are completely supported by their line manager. We treat all our people with respect and loyalty, that’s really important.
Q. It sounds like things are looking good for Ideal’s sales team? In essence, we’ve got a lot of quality in the team, we just need to build on that. After nearly 15 years, it was very strange to leave my previous company to join Ideal, but within minutes of walking through the doors I was welcomed and made to feel comfortable by everyone. Together, we really do have a winning team. I feel privileged to have joined a business of the calibre of Ideal and I am looking forward to help take it to the next level.

After a year of endeavouring to reach personal sales targets, 288 well deserving people from across the UK arrived at the uber-luxurious 5 star Shangri-La Le Touessrok Resort to celebrate their achievements in true Mauritian style. John Bagshaw gives us the low down on the high life in Mauritius… Arriving to the sound of a ceremonial gong, I could sense the excitement and energy over what we were about to experience in the days to come. The island was bouncing and it wasn’t because of the tropical rain a little bit of that was never going to dampen our group’s spirits! As we settled in, the sun came out and that evening we experienced an “island welcome” to remember at the Republik Beach Club. Fire breathers, fabulous food, an abundance of drinks and a first-rate DJ got the party started and set the bar high for the week ahead. As the new day dawned (a few hours later for some!), we were at leisure to adjust to island life and Mauritius’ tropical temperatures. Soaking up the sunshine, relaxing on the beach, chilling by the pool, drinking cocktails and making the most of
the hotel’s water sports, what more could you ask for? Some even headed to the golf course to sneak in some secret practise before the competition (not that it helped me win)! The next morning it was all systems go, with golfers and island day goers departing the hotel for action packed days of fun in the sun. The golfers were the early “birdies” heading out first, there was a competitive spirit in the air and odds were being placed on who would return victorious. What a day we had!! The weather was glorious and the course was stunning, although it challenged even the best golfers among us! Many commented that it was the best golf day that they had ever taken part in and I have to say, I agree! It was a brilliant day from tee off to the final hole and the clubhouse beyond!

The catamaran cruise cast away to the exclusive “Ile Des Deux Cocos” giving us time to relax. Captain drop your anchor, we’re diving in and could be some time! P.S. For the record, my “Pineapple Rum Boat” was definitely THE BEST! Soaking up sun, swinging in hammocks, chilling on beanbags, splashing in waves, snorkelling in the sea and spotting sea life from the glass bottomed boat – we discovered our “Ideal Island”. Who would have thought we could sample 19 different flavours of Rum at the same time? After a feast fit for kings, a mega sega show wowed the crowd and got people moving, the party was in full swing and the atmosphere was building. It wasn’t over yet however, we still had a few surprises to come! A spectacular firework display lit up the sky and ensured our Race to Mauritius finished with a bang, before we celebrated our next adventure - the Race to the Cape with green glow sticks that lit up the dance floor and lit up our faces as we partied the night away.
