FEATURE

Back to our roots and supporting the INDUSTRY with product solutions and the next big thing! THE NEXT INDUSTRIAL ELECTRICIAN OR ENGINEER IN THE MAKING Ideal Electrical Suppliers has been an electrical wholesaler in NZ for nearly 20 years and has always valuated the opportunity to support the next electrician in the making. Our involvement with local training programs, institutes, ETCO, Master Electricians and all training facilities throughout the country is a privilege for Ideal to be involved in. This is no different for our own Industrial BDM, Paul Booth who shares one of his experiences in supporting the local Polytech and ETCO Challenges in his region. PAUL BOOTH As an apprentice, I remember how daunting it was and how little support for the apprentices there seemed to be. Although this has come a long way now, I can’t help myself for being involved to make the journey as rich as possible. So, I made it a goal last year to “be involved” with our young folk, showing support for one of our organisations – ETCO. I made contact with some key people, Etco Invercargill and Dunedin (and their Head Office; Roxanne), EIS Invercargill, Wayne from Laser. The Master Electricians Apprentice Challenge was the target. I set out to support by contacting Key Ideal supply partners who are key in the Industry. My goal was to bring a bond and Industry unity together to help add value and

support in making the challenge as rich as possible. On July 19th the Invercargill stage began, at EIS Invercargill, with several competitors, male and female, fighting for a place in the Challenge. There was approx. a dozen or so participants, individually working through different Industrial scenarios, safety, PLC, and drive type areas etc. Since this we organised support from other key supply partners to our Industrial offer. Some of Ideal Industrial key supply partners supported in product for EIS to build some of the training modules e.g. Nexans, Firstflex, CSL, Phoenix, or apprentice tool deals from Milwaukee, Bizline. I was lucky enough to be involved in these same workshops at Etco Dunedin and an awards ceremony at Otago Polytech as well with the support key Industry brands as featured in this publication. Part of Ideal’s vision to feed the Industry with knowledge can be seen at some training facilities with the below “Ideal Power Wheel.” Thanks to Etco and our supply partners who made these training modules such an enjoyable time.

Why I use WEG Drive and Control Products…

DLW Direct OnLine

MPW40 Motor Circuit Breakers

CFW11 System Drive

TR Industries stock a wide range of WEG automation and control products. From contactors to circuit breakers, including capacitors, terminal blocks, starters and a complete line of push buttons and pilot lights, we have a broad portfolio of controls designed to address the diverse industry requirements. We also provide complete industrial automation solutions using the most modern hardware and software tools available in the market. We recently interviewed some long-standing customers in New Zealand who use a variety of our automation and control products to ask why they use them and to honestly review their experiences. Thank you to Highway Electrical and System Integrators for their frank answers and feedback. We absolutely believe in the value of our products, but we don’t just want you to take our word for it...

Why I use WEG drive and control products… Tony Lumb

Managing Director System Integrators How long have you been using WEG drives? For the last five years. Why do you use them? I find them to be reliable. I also think they are price competitive. WEG is a brand with strong integrity which is important to me. Why did you start using them? One of the reasons was that we can now match the drive with the motor and its very helpful to have them both from the same manufacturer. If there is a problem, you only need to talk to one company, and we have found that TR Industries are always really motivated to help us with support.

communications element. Also as a company they are always quick to respond to quotation requests, often within 24hrs and that’s been of benefit over the years. Would you recommend these products? Yes – I would, and I have. What has your experience of working with TR Industries been like? We have always been looked after. If we need product support things have been resolved or replaced. Their communication is a strength especially from a customer standpoint.

What are the benefits of using these products in your opinion? The after-sale service. There are no arguments, it’s a speedy process and they will come to site to resolve issues and stay until it’s fixed. This takes out all of the drama. What features do you find useful? The ethernet 4

Why I use WEG control products… Kevin McGarvey Product Manager Highway Electrical

How long have you been using WEG control products? For about three years, perhaps longer with the VSDs. I use a fair cross section of the whole range including push buttons, soft starters and VSDs. Why do you use them? Their motors are well respected and that flows onto their lower voltage products. They are a trusted brand. They are also priced competitively. Why did you start using them? We were exporting to the USA and realised that WEG products were compliant with that marketplace and matched their products and requirements. What are the benefits of using these products in your opinion? The technology is ahead of the game, robust and reliable. When we do a job, we also like to fit out the whole range of products and as everything is standard and from the same company, it all works together. I like the consistency of this and like the whole suite of products. What features do you find useful? They make it easy to work with them. They have solid support around the motors and the motor protection equipment. TR Industries are a onestop-shop which suits me. They also offer a great overnight turnaround service which is fairly unique.

For the first time, Ideal Electrical and TR Industries have partnered to launch an exciting opportunity for all readers of this magazine as well as purchasers of WEG control and automation products in-store. In May 2021, TR Industries will take one lucky winner on a trip of a lifetime to Brazil where they will be accompanied by staff from WEG and Ideal Electrical. The trip will include a visit to WEG factories and HQ and experiences of the wonders of Brazil. Both Tony and Kevin have previously been on this trip and commented on how valuable it was in terms of understanding WEG’s commitment to excellence, as well as their full product range. “It is an impressive set up. They even have their own foundry. They manufacture everything themselves in-house – nothing is outsourced. The quality control of their products stands out,” shared Tony, Kevin agreed wholeheartedly,

Would you recommend these products? Yes – definitely. I already have and do so regularly. What has your experience of working with TR Industries been like? The technical knowledge of their support team is strong. We are looking at getting them to come in and upskill our team regarding data sheets in the future, and the fact that this training is available is also something that I value. ‘It was an amazing trip. At the end of it all, I looked back over the time we spent there and was struck by the level of quality control and how important it is to WEG to ensure that quality control is paramount.”

Hidden profits found in quick detection of compressed air, gas and vacuum leaks NEW “GAME-CHANGING” TECHNOLOGY CAN HELP AVERT DOWNTIME For industrial plants and facilities, compressed air, gas and vacuum systems are a vital source of converted energy. Easier than other resources such as electricity, compressors are everywhere in today’s factories. They run machines, tools, robotics, lasers, product handling systems, and much more. Yet many compressed air, gas and vacuum systems are compromised by wear and poor maintenance practices, which contribute to the greatest waste of all— the ever-present leaks. These leaks can be hidden behind machines, at connection points, overhead in fixed pipes, or in cracked pipes or worn hoses. The waste adds up quickly and can even lead to downtime.

20

INDUSTRIE

MARCH – MAY 2020

THE HIGH COST OF WASTED AIR The New Zealand government, as part of its Target Sustainability project, estimates that system leaks can account for 30 % to 50 % of a compressed air system’s capacity. The energy costs associated with air leaks are a single factor in the overall cost. Air leaks can also lead to capital expenses, rework, downtime or quality issues and increased maintenance costs To make up the pressure loss due to leaks, operators often overcompensate by buying a larger compressor than is needed, which requires significant capital costs along with increasing energy costs. System leaks can also cause air dependent equipment to fail due to low system pressure. That can lead to production delays, unplanned downtime, quality issues, decreased service life, and increased maintenance due to unnecessary cycling of compressors. It’s no wonder that utilities, industry, and government all target compressed air systems as a potential source of cost savings. Leaks lead to waste. Correcting those leaks can save the operator money and prevent the utility from having to build additional capacity into their system. GAME-CHANGING TECHNOLOGY What if there were a leak detection technology that could pinpoint the precise location of a leak from up to 50 meters away, in a noisy environment, without shutting down equipment? Fluke has developed an industrial imager that does just that. Industrial maintenance managers are calling the Fluke ii900 Sonic Industrial Imager, a “game-changer” in the pursuit of finding compressed air leaks. This new sonic industrial imager— which can detect a broader range of frequencies than traditional ultrasonic devices–uses new SoundSight™ technology to deliver enhanced visual scans of air leaks, similar to the way infrared cameras detect hotspots. The ii900 includes an acoustical array of tiny super sensitive microphones-that detect both sonic and ultrasonic sound waves. The ii900 recognizes a sound source at a potential leak location and then it applies proprietary algorithms that interpreter the sound as a leak. The results produce a SoundMap™ image—a

SUPPLIER SPOTLIGHT

colour map superimposed over the visible light image— showing exactly where the leak is. The results are displayed on the 7” LCD screen as a still image or a real time video. The ii900 can save up to 999 image files or 20 video files for documentation or compliance purposes. Large areas can be scanned quickly which helps locate leaks much faster than with other methods. It also allows for filtering on intensity and frequency ranges. A team at a large manufacturing plant recently used two ii900 prototype units to locate 80 compressed air leaks in one day. The maintenance manager said it would have taken them weeks to find that number of leaks using traditional methods. By finding and fixing leaks quickly, the crew also saved potential downtime, which at this plant can cost an estimated $100,000 an hour in lost productivity. HOW MUCH AIR ARE YOU WASTING? The first step in controlling leaks in compressed air, gas and vacuum systems is to estimate your leak load. Some leakage (less than 10 %) is to be expected. Anything beyond that is considered wasteful. The first step is to determine your current leak load so you can use that as a benchmark to compare improvements against. Talk to the Industrial Team at Ideal Electrical or contact New Zealand Fluke distributor CSL who has a large team of Fluke experts who can assist with advice and demonstrations.

Where to find leaks: – Couplings – Hoses – Tubes – Fittings – Threaded pipe joints – Quick disconnects – FRLs (filter, regulator, lubricator combinations) – Condensate traps

– Valves – Flanges – Packings – Air-lines – Pneumatic holding tanks.

When a production line relies heavily on compressed air to run tools and processes, even tiny air leaks can multiply product and energy waste and lost production time. Staying on top of those air leaks is a priority. Genie, a Terex brand, is a leading global manufacturer of aerial lift equipment recently found a new weapon to help it combat those pesky and costly leaks.
