INSTALLING LED STRIPS AND PROFILES BY TASK LIGHTING LED STRIPS ARE FRAGILE LED strips are extremely delicate and should be handled with care to maintain the warranty. Imagine taking a circuit board from a computer...You would handle it very extreme care. LED strips lack the 2mm thick fibre glass backing board that computer PCBs have and so are far more fragile and should be treated as such. THINGS NOT TO DO • •
Never pull up a strip after sticking it down to readjust its position. Doing so can break resistors, ICs or solder joints, voids the warranty and will cause the strip to fail prematurely after install or not work at all. If this does happen the strip should be discarded and replaced.
THINGS TO DO • • • • • •
Always mount LED strips on an aluminum profile for heat sinking this helps extend the LED life. Always do a dry run before peeling and sticking strips in place. Centre your strip in its profile so if any unlit areas exist at each end they are equal. This avoids the temptation to pull a strip up if it’s located wrong. Clean the mounting surface of any dust & dirt etc plus wipe with methylated spirits or similar solvent to remove any greasy surface. Always peel and stick strips, where possible, starting from the cable entry end. This avoids the possibility of the strip cable entry not positioning well to exit the profile.
INSTALLING PROFILES When installing profiles always allow for the profile to expand as it warms up when the LEDs are turned on. This becomes extremely important with long runs of profile end to end as the longitudinal expansion is cumulative. The thermal linear coefficient of expansion of aluminium is 0.024mm per M per degC. Example: 40degC rise over 30m is 0.024mm x 40degC x 30m = 29mm of length increase. A rough and safe guide would be to allow 1.5mm per M for expansion plus the thickness of endcaps if used. Failure to allow for expansion can cause the profile to buckle and/or the diffuser to fall out if the profile is mounted tightly between walls etc. This would not be covered under warranty.
PROFILES CAN BE INSTALLED SEVERAL WAYS Some use mounting clips which are screwed into place first and LED strip mounting profiles are then snapped into the clips. Some profiles can be fixed by drilling through the profile base to screw fix directly. Screw fixing is only recommended for short runs as long runs would require larger and larger holes to allow for accumulated expansion over a long run. With screw fixing always use counter sunk screws and counter sink the drilled holes in the profile to ensure that the screw heads are flush with the profile surface. Failing to do will stop the profile from acting as a heat sink for that portion of the LED strip and possibly cause premature failure due to the LEDs running too hot. This will void the warranty. EXTERIOR INSTALLS Exterior strips are best not exposed to direct sunlight as can cause premature failures in some LEDs and diffusers. LED neon flex is a superior product when exposed to direct sunlight. Installation in shaded areas such as under eaves and under bench seats etc is OK. STRIP LOAD CALCULATIONS All Task Lighting product stands will soon have a QR code displayed for quick access to our free strip load calculator. It’s simple to use and gives total loads for strip lengths plus the total amps. For tuneable whites, RGB & RGBW strips the load and amps per colour is calculated which helps in choosing controllers (rated by amps per colour or channel) plus knowing the amps helps in choosing cable size to avoid excessive voltage drop. This website is useful for voltage drop calculations: https://www.jcalc.net/voltage-drop-calculator-as3008 Aim for no more than 5% voltage drop when installing LED strips. This is most important with RGB or RGBW strips to main colour consistency over long runs. All of the above may not apply in all cases but comes from our long experience with the application of LED strips. TASK Lighting is always here to help with any questions.

Te-na- koutou katoa There are some thought-provoking things on the horizon relating to where the electrical industry is going. One, in particular, has a longer-term focus, however will need some thought and action now to ensure a positive impact in the decades to come. There is some fast-paced future thinking from the Government’s 2030 Climate Change Commission (He Pou a Rangi). This climate change report is a large document with a great deal of ramifications for our industry, it will take some time to digest fully. However, there is a clear indication that NZs electrical sector will be a major player in achieving these goals by 2030-2050. When the commission’s report comes to fruition, there will be major changes on the horizon for the entire electrical industry, from source generation through to the end-user. Some of the outcomes for 2030 are aspirational, and most of the outcomes overall are genuinely possible for the 2050 deadline. This will need action by three of the key areas in our industry: • The generation sector - to work towards one of the more aspirational goals of 100% renewable energy generation
• The networks - to ensure their lines and infrastructure assets are capable of supporting any increase in load • The contracting sector - ready and able to provide the workforce to carry out the work for the endusers. 100% renewable generation is a tough ask but a worthy goal. “The NZ battery”, which is what our country’s entire generation potential is being referred to as, will need to be modified to include a combination of wind, solar, or hydro generation sources to replace any coal or gas fired plants. The construction of, or withdrawal of, these types of infrastructure brings out the ‘not in my back yard’ attitude, or Nimby’ism, everybody can see the long term benefit of such large-scale generation projects, just so long as it is in someone else’s back yard. The resource management Act (RMA) does not help, and hopefully any amendment to this will speed up the development of larger infrastructure projects. Some networks are notorious in their attitude towards the capacity of their infrastructure. Grossly

inflated asset upgrade quotations are alarmingly frequent, often single projects that are new or upgraded are seemingly targeted to bear the cost of a network asset upgrade that will service a much wider area over the longer term. There seems to be no apparent self-imposed upgrade plan to support suburban or industrial growth, nor increased capacity. FREE TO AIR SIGNAL TRANSMISSION IN NZ TERRESTRIAL VS. SATELLITE Households who have come away from a Sky subscription service, often switch to a mix of Freeview and online content to satisfy their viewing habits so today we thought a discussion of the 2 choices for free to air transmission currently available in New Zealand might be overdue. Two transmission choices for Freeview are available in NZ, DVB-T (Terrestrial) and DVB-S (Satellite). The preferred choice is Terrestrial because that can deliver high definition (1080i), whereas Satellite can only deliver standard definition (576i). The reason we have 2 choices in NZ is Terrestrial cannot reach all New Zealanders and requires line of sight with a transmission tower. If you’re unlucky enough to live in a valley or dip, or are quite remote and surrounded by hills, then Satellite may be your only choice. ANTENNA SELECTION GUIDE Approx. 6 years ago Matchmaster came up with an online guide to help installers choose the best transmission method for any address. Found on the Matchmaster homepage the ‘Antenna Selection Guide’ allows anyone to enter an address and get an aerial recommendation as well as a full set of installation specifications, a Google map of the various transmitter locations, and a topography diagram showing any hills interfering with line of sight. The nature of digital transmission means there is very little ‘signal wash’ over hills or trees, as there was with analog. This is where an experienced local aerial installer with a field strength meter, can make all the difference between getting Terrestrial to work and having to choose Satellite.

PHASED ARRAY Another technology advance that tipped the scales towards Terrestrial was the introduction of the ‘Phased Array’ aerial. This was a design geared towards the specific requirements of digital transmission. When Digital transmission was introduced in 2007, many home owners found their existing ‘Yagi’ aerials, previously installed to capture our analog signals, perfectly adequate for catching the new digital transmission. These traditional analog aerials were designed to generate lots of power but in doing so, also generated lots of noise. A good digital TV picture however relies on a very clean, low noise aerial to capture the signal and low signal power can always be amplified later.

5G ON THE HORIZON With 5G on the horizon, numbers of cell towers are also set to increase, due to the shorter transmission lengths of so much more data capacity. As most installers will know 4G could be a big problem for a clean balanced terrestrial signal and Matchmaster will shortly be replacing its most popular antenna, the 02MM-MDU36, with an updated design with more 4G/5G filtering. As a TV’s DVB-T tuner can also see the same frequencies the cell towers use to connect your mobile to your service provider, we need to filter them out so as not to overwhelm the onboard TV terrestrial tuner. The new 02MM-MDU50 with 50db of filtering will take over from the 02MM-MDU36 early August with comparable pricing. DVB-S SATELLITE TUNER The last point to note is the recent adoption of the DVB-S Satellite tuner to most new TV’s sold in NZ. Prior to this we saw just the DVB-T tuner onboard, with the possible addition of the analog tuner for older sets bought around the time of the digital transmission launch. If you are shifting house and need to look at Satellite for Freeview, and your TV predates the addition of the DVB-S tuner, then potentially you may have to add an external Satellite set top box and hook it up to the HDMI input on the existing TV. (Check the inputs on the rear of the TV to see whether it has twin tuners or not.) JULY -AUGUST 2021 | 29

Let’s face it, we’re in it together when it comes to the a�ermath of a global pandemic. Global shipping and freight delays are due to container availability and shipping conges�on, with much of the supply to New Zealand being trans-shipped. With the demand in raw materials mainly seen in Asia and Europe causing increasing prices due to shortages, there is one thing we can all do to help when it comes to the wood supply that will affect drums and pallets. A sustainable approach As part of our Nexans New Zealand Environmental policy, we conduct our business with respect and care for the environment and have in place a process to reduce the amount of waste by recycling our wooden drums and pallets. This is nothing new - but it’s our proac�ve approach and how you, the customer, can become part of the solu�on!
What to do All our wooden drums and pallets no longer in use can be organised for collec�on from project site or your local branch and returned to us for re-circula�on, helping to limit the amount of landfill waste and the need for new drums and pallets. This is a free service and has no minimum requirements but does have a few condi�ons which are: • Nexans only items accepted. • Drums not up to standard will not be upli�ed. • Check for rot, splits, cracks, and broken flanges especially where the drum may have been si�ng for a long �me on the ground in one place. • Check barrel - make sure reel core is in good condi�on as per above.

TESTING THE EARTHING CONDUCTORS FROM THE E-BAR TO EACH OUTLET THE TEST CAN BE USED TO VERIFY THREE IMPORTANT POINTS - That the P and N wires are tight at their respective bus bars on the switchboard supplying the circuit, and at the outlet itself. - That the earthing conductor from the E-bar of the M.E.N board to each outlet is no greater than 0.5 Ohms and will take fault current (an important safety feature in the event of a P-E fault in an earthed appliance). NOTE: AS/NZ3000:2007 No longer mandates a 0.5 Ohms figure, opting instead for a good overall result from both within the installation, and from the distribution circuit. AVO NZ still encourages earthing to be of good quality and no greater than 0.5 Ohms in order to enhance the overall assurance of installation safety. - That there are no “spread earths” (i.e weak connections to the earth pin of the inserted plug) or “weak earths” at the outlets.

Let’s assume our earth wire in this case is the maximum allowed, 0.5 Ohms.
TIP 1: This assumes th P and E wires are the same size. If using 2.5mm with the “reduced” earth (1mm), add 0.7 Ohms to the P-N value at the M.E.N board. If using 6mm with 4mm earth, add 0.83 Ohms. TIP 2: It is a good idea to precede the test with a check to see if the P and N wires are tight (use the “L-N” range). This also permits a small connection problem in the E wire to be noted.
