Te-na- koutou katoa The cry I often hear is when will AS/ NZS 3000:2018, Electrical Installations, known as the Australia/New Zealand Wiring Rules, be cited? I consider we are lucky or wise in New Zealand, in a short space of time we have seen two amendments to these rules take place, in Australia these amendments have been adopted. A further alteration is already in the pipeline and going on past experience will likely take a while! For New Zealand there is some perceived light somewhere in the tunnel. In April MBIE released for public comment a document “Updating the references to standards in the electricity and gas safety regulations”, one of the proposals is to jointly cite AS/NZS 3000:2018 and AS/NZS 3000:2007 with modifications! The outcome of this document will be interesting! New Zealand, electricity legislation has evolved into multiple layers much like an “onion”. An “outer layer” the overarching Electricity Act (1992) covers most of the electrical industry from generation to end user and areas such as the operation and powers of the EWRB. The next “layer” is the Electricity (Safety) Regulations (2010) which sit under the Act. We then have multiple standards “Cited” by the Regulations. For better or worse the standards are referred to by number, date, and title, necessitating a change to the Regulations to allow the adaption of a redated standard, this has been the stumbling block in

allowing the use of revised standards. Adding to the myriad are the terms used in the various parts of the legislation, “Interpretations” in the Act and Regulations “Definitions” in the Standards often have a different meaning to the other legislative documents. In August 1888 Reefton had the first official supply of electricity available to the public. In November 1888 a set of rules were produced. The rules or legislation of today follow the same principle as 1888, the use, generation and conveyance of electricity shall not hurt people or damage property and shall be safe. Since 1888 we have had several refinements to “Wiring Rules” from what have at times been prescriptive to where we are now that allow for innovation. As an electrical worker have things really changed in what we do since 1888? The basics are still the same, make sure your work is safe. What you do, and leave completed, is not going to hurt anyone or cause damage. Since before 1888 technology has changed at a rate faster than any set of rules ever can and will continue to do so. Our greatest challenge is to remain technically competent in what we do and ensure electrically safety. Legislation requires what we do to be “electrically safe” this will, as in 1888, be a judgement call by the electrical worker and one of the reasons we hold registration and a licence and need understand what we do and stay competent.

Is a document that has a different date on it going to make what we do any safer or us more competent? Like most rules we can follow them and still cause problems for ourselves and others. We need to be compliant with the legislation and at the same time we need to be continually thinking about and reviewing what we do. Just because “we have always done it that way” does not mean it is still fit for purpose. Would you still use a rewireable fuse rather than a MCB or HRC fuse? Will AS/NZS 3000:2018 solve the problem? Then again what is the problem if we remain understanding and technically competent in our work and can justify the decisions we make as a registered and licenced electrical worker! THE PREWIRE The Domestic Prewire can be a contentious subject as everyone seems to have a point of view so here we will discuss a few of the principles and trade-offs involved and hopefully simplify the process a little for the installer. The challenge is to accommodate all of the viewing habits the home owner has at present and then to also balance this against any future habits of, not only a growing family, but also any possible future owners of the home when the original family decide to move on. Often the rush towards the finish line when building can make the prewire seem like a low priority but the reality is once the wall lining is on, any future considerations for AV become much more difficult. Anyone contemplating a wireless future should consider the likely age of any immediate or future occupants of the home as there is no substitute for copper in the wall for reliability and ease of use.

relatively inexpensive nature of the cable. It normally also has the advantage of returning the IR signal back to the AV source, (in the opposite direction the picture and sound are travelling) simplifying remote control from all locations back to the AV source. It is recommended to avoid patch panels and faceplates when choosing CAT6 distribution, and cable directly between transmitter and receiver using brush plates (see 05MM-WP64). This is to avoid the loss associated with too many intersections leading to drop out and picture instability and this means wiring directly from the equipment area to a TV location rather than through the CAT6 hub. REST OF HOUSE

HDMI DISTRIBUTION VIA CAT5/6 34MM-2K50-3

RG6 We would recommend every current, or possible future, TV or Sky decoder location, be wired with 1 x RG6 each back to the distribution point (typically a recessed box in the garage or a nominated equipment area in the house). If modulation for distributing SKY around the home is being considered, then you also need a second RG6 to transmit the newly created Sky DVB-T channel back to the RG6 distribution point from that SKY decoder location. In addition to this you also need to make the RG6 connections from the roof mounted Aerial or Satellite dish to feed the same distribution point. If you have both mounted on the roof then run a separate cable for each but if left with no choice you can combine the Satellite and Terrestrial signals into one cable with an outdoor diplexer. TYPICAL SKY AND/OR FREEVIEW TERRESTRIAL RG6 WIRING DIAGRAM 13MM-R65P

10MM-DDA24

HDMI SOURCE

LOCAL TV

Another reason to prewire with CAT6 is to give each TV location a hardwired connection to the internet for the online content available in smart TVs . This is to avoid WIFI congestion and improve reliability and capacity as our connection speeds improve into the future. If you intend to run HDMI leads to distribute an AV source to all TV locations, then you also need to consider running a CAT6 lead for returning the IR commands back to the source. Whilst there are kits available to run a remote control signal over an HDMI lead there is nothing that takes into account more than one location. These IR signals can be run through a patch panel and/or faceplates as the signal is very robust once captured into a copper connection.

02MM-MDU50

HDMI 10MM-MT67

CAT6 Whole house distribution of an AV signal over CAT6 is now very popular due to the ease of the prewire and

18 | LIVEWIRE

Prewiring with HDMI is normally a performance option when picture and sound performance are a priority. HDMI also currently happens to be the most cost effective way into 4K capacity, as 4K extenders continue to be relatively expensive compared to their 1080p cousins and modulation has an upper limit of 1080p. Whilst early, or low-cost, HDMI cables have a reputation for failing over

10m, Matchmaster’s current range of HDMI leads are fully tested and rated to work up to 20m with a 4K signal. Simply add an HDMI splitter to the AV source and match the outputs to the number of TV’s. If you have a request for more than one HDMI source, consider an HDMI Matrix switcher. These are designed to allow switching between HDMI sources from any connected TV, independently of what the other TV’s may be set to. For the prewire, whether using an HDMI Splitter or Matrix Switcher, each TV location only needs one HDMI lead back to the equipment area. 34MM-HDS4 CONNECTION DIAGRAM

ALL TV’S

HDMI SOURCE

ARC (AUDIO RETURN CHANNEL) Often overlooked in the prewire is consideration for transmitting the TV’s digital sound output back to an AV Amp or Soundbar location. As the drive towards thinner TV’s continues, TV manufacturers are struggling to keep sound quality advances on a par with an increasingly better picture performance. ARC is normally bundled with CEC code transfer and source on/off as well, which can be either an installer nightmare (if not handled well by the TV or HDMI source manufacturer), or a very helpful feature for the end user. Most HDMI cables have this feature as standard however it is rare to find a reliable extender that supports ARC, CEC, and IR all in one (see our 34MM-4K70-ARC). 34MM-4K70-ARC

HDMI Picture & Sound ARC, CEC and IR

If ARC over an HDMI lead or extender is not an option, consider installing an Optical Toslink lead back to the equipment area. Common to almost all TV’s, Soundbars and AV Amps, this connection doesn’t carry any remote control signals but does have the same ability to transmit

digital audio as the ARC connection. (see 04MMTOS1 to 04MM-TOS20). If the install is complete and the wall lining is on, there is the option of transmitting the optical signal over yet another CAT5/6 cable using a Digital Audio Extender (see 34MM-DAE1). EARC (ENHANCED AUDIO RETURN CHANNEL) eARc has the potential to reshape the prewire for hometheatre. Claimed to much improve the connection and unpredictable sync ailments sometimes associated with standard ARC, this new format also increases capacity from 1Mbps to 37Mbps, which, unlike standard ARC, should allow all current sound formats to pass without the need of any further compression. Potentially this means all HDMI sources can be connected directly to the TV and an HDMI cable can be used to transmit the maximum bandwidth of the source’s audio signal intact to an eARC compatible Soundbar or AV Amp. Potentially we may even see cheaper AV amps without any video switching onboard coming onto the market as the TV becomes the HDMI hub. This also has the benefit of simplifying the user experience. POSSIBLE eARC SETUP

FUTURE PROOFING AND DAMAGE MITIGATION In an ideal world we would likely have floor to ceiling conduit installed to every current, or likely, TV position in a home. Given the constraints of budget, time, building regulations and the available options, what is realistic and achievable for future proofing, and for providing some options for when things do get damaged onsite. With 4K sources being slow to mature in NZ, the market has been relatively happy to stick with 1080p for domestic distribution in general. England and Australia have both had their mainstream Satellite Pay TV providers delivering 4K for some years and if rumours are true, we may see some development in this area mid 2022…now might be the perfect time to start thinking SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER 2021 | 19

about offering an option to increase that installation capacity to 4K.

MODULATION Each Active TV location: 1 x RG6 (Freeview/AV) 3 x CAT6 (IR, Internet, and Damage/Future)

Damage on work sites is inevitable and HDMI leads, whilst delivering the highest quality picture and sound, have the greatest potential for damage due to the larger 19pin head shells and generally larger cable gauges when compared with CAT6 or RG6, so running a relatively cheap length of CAT6 with each installed HDMI lead is highly recommended. Damage to CAT6 or RG6 is less likely but common enough to warrant consideration as well but once equipment locations are known Matchmaster has the following recommendations as a guide:

Each possible future TV location: 1 x RG6 (Freeview/AV) 2 x CAT6 (Internet, IR)

(All wiring suggestions assume distribution of one AV source (typically Sky) to many TV’s and wall mounting all TV’s with no line of sight to any AV components)

2. No consideration has been given for any speaker arrangements

HDMI DISTRIBUTION Each Active TV location: 1 x RG6 (Freeview) 1 x HDMI lead 3 x CAT6 (IR, Internet, and Damage/Future) Each possible future TV location: 1 x RG6 (Freeview) 2 x CAT6 (AV, Internet) Each Sky decoder location: 1 x RG6 CAT6 DISTRIBUTION Each Active TV location: 1 x RG6 (Freeview) 3 x CAT6 (AV, Internet, and Damage/Future) Each possible future TV location: 1 x RG6 (Freeview) 2 x CAT6 (AV, Internet) Each Sky decoder location: 1 x RG6

20 | LIVEWIRE

Each Sky decoder location: 2 x RG6 PREWIRE NOTES: 1.

No provision in the prewire suggestions above has been made for ARC/eARC for either a Soundbar or an AV Amp

3. The suggestions made are concentrated on the AV needs of the home and no provision has been made for hardwiring the internet to the wider demands of the house eg CCTV, wireless access points or household computers and printers etc. 4. No provision has been made for hardwiring the internet to any AV sources or Amplifiers. 5. Please remember the CAT6 for AV, is run back to the equipment area, where as CAT6 for the internet, is run back to the CAT6 distribution point. This may or may not be the same area. SUMMARY The prewire is remarkably similar across all three distribution methods and this is very convenient if a final decision on method of distribution, seating/TV positions, or number and type of AV sources, has been delayed. If the final details on equipment, seating, type of viewing etc are hard to come by, then with RG6 and CAT6 being relatively inexpensive, covering more than one option can be considered. At the end of the day the prewire will come down to taking an educated guess at the viewing habits of not only the current homeowners’ family but any future owners, and then incorporating as much future proofing and damage mitigation as budget and tolerance allow. Remember cabling is never cheaper than when the wall lining is off.

kPa vs PSI

in Pressure Controls When it comes to pressure measurements, there are two universal options, kPa and PSI. So what are they, what is the difference and how do you move from one to the other? kPa (kilopascal) is defined as the pressure equalling 1 Newton per square meter. Developed by the Frenchman Blaise Pascal, this became the metric measurement for pressure as adopted by the majority of the world. Conversely, PSI is the imperial measure for pressure, defined as 1 pound-force per square inch, which has been adopted by the United States as their standard measurement for pressure. There are some exceptions to the geographical rules. Such as universally kPa is used for many science applications, whereas PSI is often used in the automotive industry. So why is this important? Because both kPa and PSI are measurements of pressure, you can find both present across your day to day life.

22 | LIVEWIRE

In insolation, this isn’t a problem, but when you come across two parts of a system with different units of measurement, it’s important to understand firstly how they differ, and secondly how to convert between the two. kPa and PSI are measuring effectively the same thing, just on a different scale to on another. This is where you need to convert one to the other to ensure you are setting pressure controls to the right level. 1 PSI = 6.895 kPa If you are needing to convert PSI to kPa, use the following formula: (PSI number) / 6.895

If you are needing to convert kPa to PSI, use the following formula: (kPa number) x 6.895 If you were working with a pressure control that doesn’t match the pressure measure of your equipment, converting one way or the other will allow you to select the correct high event and differential range appropriate for that unit. VERIFYING THE SUB-CIRCUIT PROTECTION RATINGS This test determines if the sub-circuit protection will operate in under 0.4 seconds if there is Phase – Earth fault of negligible impedance. This test must be done to verify each overcurrent device (fuse/MCB) on the M.E.N and other switchboards. First, we connect the standard lead (with 3-pin plug) to an outlet at the end of the sub-circuit being tested – this being the worst place to have such a fault, as it is here that the loop resistance is highest, and thus where over-current device will take the longest time to “blow”. This result should now be verified against the protection ratings Table 8.1 of AS/NZS 3000:2007 In this case, assume the overcurrent device is a Type-C miniature circuit breaker (MCB) rated at 16 Amps. As the reading of 0.23 Ohms is less than the maximum value allowed (as shown in the table), we can be certain that the device will operate in under 0.4 seconds if there is a phase to earth fault anywhere on this circuit. NOTE: Table 1 lists values for “fuses” - please be aware that the figures refer to HRC fuses only (i.e made to AS2005.21.1 - equivalent to BS 88). If you are checking the safety of any existing circuits protected by re-wireable fuses, then the table of maximum loop resistances on the below should be used. However, it’s advisable to replace rewireable fuses wherever practicable.

UP-RATING INSTALLED PROTECTIONS Should a situation arise where it is considered necessary to increase the rating of an existing over-current protection device, the procedure we have just followed may be used to determine the options available so as to still maintain an installation safety. CAUTION: The prodcedure outlined only relates to loop resistance and protection ratings. It takes no account of the ratings of the sub-circuit wiring concerned or the fittings connected to it. ensure each of these will also allow the safe up-rating to the intended over-current rating. Plug the loop tester in at the end of the sub-circuit needing up-rating. Perform a P-E loop test.

Consult Table 8.1 of AS/NZS 3000:2007; ensure the installed protection is safe (i.e that the max. loop value allowed is under that from the above test) WWW.AVO.CO.NZ

Use the table to see if the next higher rating (or the one that you wish to upgrade to) will still preserve installation safety

BARRIER GLANDS WITH INJECTION RESIN

PROBLEMS WITH CABLE CONSTRUCTION In order to comply with the installation codes of practice for hazardous areas, cable glands using elastomeric sealing rings should only be used on cables that are substantially round, compact with an extruded bedding and have nonhygroscopic fillers such as Figure 1. However, this cable construction is not always possible especially when it comes to multi-core cables. Figures 2 and 3 show cables that should not be used with glands with elastomeric sealing rings.

WHEN TO USE BARRIER GLANDS IEC 60079-14: Explosive atmospheres; Electrical Installation, Design, Selection and Erection Prescribes the selection of electrical equipment in hazardous areas. Knowledge of this Standard is imperative when selecting cables and cable glands for use in hazardous areas and merely referring to the product certification is not enough. IEC 60079-14 Section 9.3.2. States that: Cables for fixed installations – shall be: a) sheathed with thermoplastic, thermosetting, or elastomeric material. They shall be circular and compact. Any bedding or sheath shall be extruded. Fillers, if any, shall be non-hygroscopic; If cables do not pass one of these criteria and such cables link between a hazardous and non-hazardous area the result may be flammable gas, liquid or vapour migration through the interstices of unfilled cables to the inside of; for example, control room equipment. The situation is likely to be most acute with equipment installed in Zone 0 or Zone 1 locations (where the presence of a hazardous atmosphere has a greater likelihood and duration). If these conditions are likely to occur a barrier gland should be used.

TYPES OF BARRIER GLANDS Two Part Epoxy Based Putty For many years this was the only solution, it’s time consuming and reliant on accurate mixing and installation to get an effective seal to stop explosive gases and liquids diffusing down unfilled cables. If the putty isn’t mixed properly it can’t do its job and if it’s mixed properly but not accurately installed to fills all the voids properly again it won’t maintain a gas and liquid seal in case of an explosion. 32 | LIVEWIRE

Sachet Mix Liquid Pour Resin Although much faster than the putty option, this still takes almost twice as long as the CCG solution. The sachet mix pour resin has its on set of limitations, not least of which being the dependance on the installer to mix it properly before application into the gland. If the two part resin is not mixed properly, it can either go off too quickly or not set at all. CCG VORTex™ Injection Resin™ This instant mixing, injecting resin has all but eliminated the hassles surrounding the preparation, mixing and applying of compounds/resins in Barrier Glands. The VORTEx® Injection Resin® system is instantly and 100% accurately mixed whilst being simultaneously injected into the barrier gland in one single action. This reduces the installation time and gives an increased confidence in the installation compared to the epoxy putty or sachet mix liquid pour resins. The Injection resin flows into all the cable voids and interstices, completely filling the cable end. This forms a 100% barrier to any migration of explosive gases or fluids down the inside of an unfilled hygroscopic cable. VORTEx® Injection Resin® barrier glands are tested and fully comply with the latest IECEx standards and installation codes of practice. EX D EQUIPMENT: IEC 60079-14 Section 10.6.2 – requires the use of Barrier Glands for Ex d installations. Conventional flameproof Ex d cable glands with seals are designed primarily to retain the explosive pressure within an Ex d enclosure and prevent the passage of hot gasses through the cable entry to the surrounding atmosphere. The design of such cable glands relies on elastomeric seals sealing around the bedding of filled cable to perform this function. It has

Zone 1 Gas

been established that if cables are not effectively filled, substantially round and are hygroscopic, hot gasses and pressure produced by an explosion within an Ex d enclosure can bypass the protective elastomeric seals of a conventional Ex d Gland. These hot gases can be forced down the interstices of unfilled cable resulting in the potential damage to the cable and/or non-Ex d equipment. The use of barrier glands effectively blocks these explosive gases from migrating down interstices of unfilled cable.

IDEAL CODE CCG056001

Safe Area

BARRIER GLANDS ARE ALSO REQUIRED FOR THE FOLLOWING EQUIPMENT: Ex p Pressurized Equipment may also necessitate the use of Barrier Glands. Where necessary, to prevent the drop in pressure, the ingress of combustible gas or vapour by diffusion, or to prevent leakage of protective gas, wiring systems shall be sealed. If cables are not compact and filled barrier glands should be used. Ex nR IEC 60079-14 Section -10.8 states; “The sealing of restricted-breathing enclosures shall be such as to maintain the restricted breathing properties of the enclosure. Where the cable used is not part of the certificate and/or instruction manual and is not effectively filled, it may be necessary to use a cable gland or other method (e.g. epoxy joint, shrinking tube) which seals around the individual conductors of the cable to prevent leakage from the enclosure”.

“Whether we like it or not, our children are aware their mates are having problems, some of which are very serious. Currently, 80% of kids in crisis don’t ask for professional help. This is an Ideal opportunity for you to shine a light on a dark place for our kids” - Mike King

INTRODUCING LEGRAND’S ECONOMY EMERGENCY LIGHTING:

A SIMPLE, COSTEFFECTIVE SOLUTION FOR SAFETY AND COMPLIANCE. Capitalizing on more than 45 years’ experience in delivering innovative emergency lighting solutions to the New Zealand market, Legrand has recently introduced its new Emergency Lighting – Economy Series, a range of economy products designed for everyday applications including smaller new installations, and replacement/maintenance of existing projects. James Oloi, Legrand NZ, National Business Development Manager and Lighting Council New Zealand Representative comments, “Legrand’s Economy Series is a simple, cost effective solution for achieving safety and compliance. It’s perfect for wholesalers to hold in stock so Electrical Contractors can drop in to their local Ideal Electrical and pick up the right emergency light fitting off the shelf, at the same time as you pick up your switches, sockets and cable supplies for the job”. James adds, “As a part of the offer, Legrand has also created a universal one-box solution that includes all of the Exit sign decals so you can create a single or a double Exit sign with all the directional variations covered. Plus, the satellite has a large ring to cover the existing hole to reduce or eliminate damage to paintwork. This means that Contractors are able to minimize the stock that they’re holding in their van”. Backed by Legrand’s inhouse team of lighting experts and qualified lighting design engineers, Ideal Electrical’s specialist lighting team is able to assist you with selecting the right economy solutions to ensure your project complies with New Zealand standards.

ECONOMY WITHOUT COMPROMISE Manufactured with the same Industry leading LED technology that you’ll find in Legrand’s premium range of Emergency Lighting, the Economy Series offers a three-year warranty, 50,000 hours of LED life and Lithium batteries designed to lengthen the life of the emergency light and reduce maintenance costs. Legrand’s Economy Series is locally designed and manufactured in Australia

to meet our local standards, is environmentally friendly and energy efficient with 1-3W energy consumption. The range includes: 1. LED Edge light Exit Sign This can be single or double sided with drop in decals. It has been designed for walls or ceilings and recessed or surface mounted with a 24-meter viewing distance making it ideal for general office applications. There is a large terminal box and a slide bracket for easy installation. Accessories include a wire suspension kit, a rod suspension kit and a weatherproof enclosure for outdoor installations. 2. Economy LED Satellite. Designed for recess installation it has a D40 classification, spring clips and comes complete with flex and plug and a large trim. . 3. Surface LED Satellite. Suitable for walls or ceilings with a D40 classification, robust steel construction and a large terminal block, energy efficient. 4. LED Twinspot. For surface mount installation with 2x180LM light output, Ip65 ingress protection, IK07 impact rating, adjustable spotlight head, wire guard accessory available. 5. Weatherproof LED Battens. Designed for use as mains or emergency lighting with an optional on/off sensor the weatherproof LED Battens can be installed on wall or ceilings. The battens come in three lengths (2-foot, 4-foot and 5-foot), 400K LED, colour temperature, IP65 ingress protection, IK08 impact rating and an optional on/off sensor.

NHP PAINTS A CLEAR PICTURE FOR LIGHTING NEEDS Introduction In line with their commitment to continuous improvement, a global leader in the coatings industry recently undertook a lighting upgrade that brought together the local expertise and quality product offering from NHP and contractor, CJ Pearce. The facility forms one of the End User’s two paint factories in Australia, with another located in New Zealand, all strategically located to service the Australasian market. This particular site is used to manufacture water-based and solvent-based paints for both household and industrial applications and as such, the facility houses a number of flammable raw materials that are used throughout the production process.

Project Overview With this in mind, the facility is classified as a Zone 1 hazardous environment so when it came to a lighting upgrade for the production and filling floors at the facility towards the end of 2016, there were a number of factors to consider for the End User when choosing a supplier for the project with local contractor CJ Pearce.

This sample proved to be very beneficial for the Engineering Manager and upon delivery of the lighting design, which included 48 of the Cortem EVL100 hazardous area floodlights (down from 70 general purpose lights that were currently in use), NHP were also able to offer a 5 year warranty. “Having the product sample was a great advantage for us when it came to making the decision on a supplier. Having already used other Cortem products in different areas of the site we already trusted the brand and when it was backed by the warranty and NHP’s local support, our decision was made easy,” he said. Once the decision was made, NHP were able to deliver all 48 lights in one single delivery which enabled CJ Pearce to install them inside three days during the Christmas shutdown, which minimised production disruption and downtime. “As well as now being compliant with standards, since the new lights have been installed we’ve experienced greater light output that as well as being safer, has greatly benefitted our equipment operators,” he continued.

“The lighting that was previously used was general purpose lighting and as well as not complying with hazardous requirements, it also presented output and performance issues that led to the requirement of ongoing maintenance that was that was not only costly and inefficient but also presented safety concerns,” - said the Engineering Manager for the End User. “Working with CJ Pearce who we have a long-standing relationship with, we chose NHP to deliver a lighting solution using their Cortem range of hazardous area lighting after a detailed tendering process,” he continued. During this tendering process NHP were contacted by CJ Pearce and asked to visit the facility to assess the needs and propose a suitable solution. As part of this visit, NHP performed a number of tests using a lux level tester and from there, were able to prepare a detailed lighting design that featured the Cortem range of EVL100 hazardous area lighting fixtures.

The Solution Complementing the completed lighting design, NHP also provided a sample of the product for the End User to familiarise with and asses before making their decision.

Hazardous Area Led Lighting certified to AS2293.3

In accordance with the Australian National Construction Code (NCC) - Volume One, Part E4, and the New Zealand Building Code, Clause F6, where a Deemed-to-Satisfy Solution is proposed, every required emergency lighting system must comply with AS 2293.1.

This means that emergency luminaires which comply to AS 2293.3 and are used as part of an AS 2293.1 system, will satisfy the respective performance requirements of the NCC.

LED Strip Lighting

LED STRIP OR LED RIBBON HAS BECOME A MAINSTREAM LINEAR LIGHTING OPTION IN MOST NEW BUILDS AND RENOVATIONS. TO MEET THIS DEMAND TASK LIGHTING OFFERS A WIDE RANGE LED STRIPS, PROFILES AND DRIVERS CARRIED AS STOCK IN MOST IDEAL ELECTRICAL STORES THROUGHOUT NEW ZEALAND.

Where To Use Profiles & LED strips

Choosing Drivers & Controllers

Kitchens, laundries, bathrooms, bedrooms, lounges, etc.

Once a strip is chosen TASK’s free strip load calculator can be used to determine the load and current. Follow the link below which can be setup on phones and tablets or work directly on a desk top PC. Http://apps.tasklighting.co.nz/

Under toe kicks… use surface mount profile DSCHAN100OL with a 4.8W/m LED strip which is usually warm white (3000K) in residential projects Under cabinets /over benches… use recessed profiles DSCHAN120OL or DSCHAN140OL If recessing isn’t possible then surface mount profiles DSCHAN110OL or DSCHAN130OL Usually under cabinets 9.6W/m or 15W/m would be used to light up the working surface underneath. In bathrooms… Task Lighting Vanity packs can be used under wall hung vanity’s or vanity toe kicks in DSCHAN110OL profile as a night light. The Vanity packs come in 3 sizes, 500mm, 800mm & 1100mm in IP66 with pre-wired clear tails to suit most vanities. All strip packs, profiles, profile endcaps & drivers are all labelled on the TASK product stand. Strips are labelled by colour, W/m and length making selection easy.

Toe Kicks

Once the load is calculated add 10% and then choose the next largest driver. Drivers options include mains dimmable. Drivers need ventilation and should not be covered with insulation or located in wall cavities etc. The strip load calculator also determines the current for choosing control items such as low voltage dimmers & colour changing controllers which have a max current rating.

Customised Solutions Where longer, continuous profile lengths are required 4m lengths are available and can be cut to size. Larger profiles and high power strips are also available for general lighting projects. Talk to the Ideal team for advice on how Task Lighting can support you with all your LED strip lighting projects both large and small.

Raytec Intelligent Emergency Lighting RAYTEC ARE WORLD LEADERS IN LED LIGHTING FOR HAZARDOUS AREA ENVIRONMENTS. SPARTAN IS OUR RANGE OF GLOBALLY CERTIFIED EX LED LUMINAIRES, DELIVERING CLASS-LEADING PERFORMANCE AND RELIABILITY.

In this article, we look at Ex lighting requirements for ports and terminals and identify some of the key features to consider when specifying luminaires for these environments.

WHY EX LIGHTING IS NEEDED FOR PORTS The nature of port applications, and their coastal location, provides a challenging environment when specifying lighting. A luminaire capable of withstanding the elements is essential, given that it will commonly be exposed to marine conditions (often not too dissimilar to that of an offshore application). Furthermore, major ports that act as a hub for imports and exports will likely have a significant amount of hazardous substances (such as oil and gas products, but also bulk grains which carry an explosion risk) passing through on a daily basis, or being held in storage facilities on-site. Port owners must therefore ensure the site is compliant by having the necessary equipment on-site to safely handle and store these substances; this is where hazardous area lighting becomes so important.

Easy Maintenance The way an LED luminaire has been designed can also have a large impact on how easy maintenance is to carry out, and how long the port will be left without light should a problem arise. MAKING EASIER ACCESS • Choosing an LED luminaire with a removable PSU (Power Supply Unit) can help to make

RAYTECH INTELLIGENT EMERGENCY LIGHTING

• access for maintenance much easier. • Luminaire’s such as the SPARTAN High-Power Flood & High-Power Bay, allow the PSU to be • removed from the main body of the luminaire, so all wiring and serviceable parts can be positioned in an easy-toaccess locations.

Emergency Lighting Ports and terminals are high-risk environments and rely on the use of emergency lighting to ensure the safety of everybody on-site should a power failure occur. DURATION & OUTPUT • Fully Retrofitable • Self Tests Emergency Battery • UK Designed & Manufactured • 5yr Warranty • Tri-colour LED indicator • ATEX & IEC Ex Rated - Zone 1

• It’s important to check the emergency duration of a luminaire to ensure it provides back-up • illumination for a sufficient length of time, but you should also consider the percentage light output of the luminaire in emergency mode. It is common for output to drop significantly when switching to emergency mode. • Most SPARTAN emergency luminaires provide 25% light output for 3 hours as standard, but if required can run at up

L O N G L I F E – F U L LY R E T R O F I TA B L E

to 100% light output for shorter durations. This provides the ultimate performance and flexibility for emergency lighting in hazardous areas. • Prior to installation, it’s recommended to complete a lighting design scheme based on both normal and emergency conditions. This will ensure sufficient light levels are being achieved and the correct number of luminaire’s have been specified. AUTOMATED TESTING • Modern emergency luminaires, such as SPARTAN Intelligent Emergency, are helping to make emergency systems more reliable. Designed to ensure optimum battery performance, they provide a self-testing function which automatically cycles the battery to ensure its health and to measure its capacity.

Withstanding the Elements Ports and terminals often represent an unforgiving environment for the lighting installed on-site. The conditions in some areas of a port will be very similar to what would be expected in offshore applications, and lighting must be specified accordingly. There are three major environmental issues that companies face when installing hardware for a port application; Corrosion – exposure to sea spray and salty air means a greater risk of corrosion. The risk is greater in locations like docking areas, where exposure to sea spray is greater, but all areas around ports provide a higher risk of corrosion than inland applications. The hardware installed must therefore be specified to withstand these conditions. At Raytec, our SPARTAN range is designed for offshore use in-mind; made with marine grade aluminium, stainless steel fixings and ABS-approved to marine standards. Extreme weather – with high wind and rain levels, extreme weather conditions at ports is a regular occurrence. A luminaire with a high IP rating is essential to prevent water ingress which could damage internal components. While the majority of hazardous area fittings will be rated to at least IP65, we would recommend specifying to IP66 or IP67 for port applications. Sun – depending on where the port is located, prolonged exposure to ultraviolet rays (UV) can cause issues with

luminaires with a GRP housing (glass reinforced plastic). Over time the GRP can degrade and become brittle, which could invalidate the luminaires hazardous area certification, rendering it useless.

Other Considerations Dust-Only Certification Protecting against dust is a key factor for any area of a port where bulk grain is being handled or stored. If the only explosion risk in these areas comes from dust, i.e. grain, a smart specification can save costs by specifying an Ex luminaire certified for protection against dust only (unlike most luminaires which are certified for gas and dust). A number of SPARTAN Ex products are available as a dedicated Zone 21 variant for exactly these kinds of applications, providing a cost-effective solution in areas where there is no explosion risk from gas, only dust.

Features • Emergency function: Self testing intelligent emergency • Certification: ATEX and IEC Ex rated for Zone 1 and 2 Gas and Dust, and UL/CSA inc. C1D2 • Input: Mains Voltage 110-254V 50/60 Hz AC only • LED Type: PLATINUM SMT LEDs • IP Rating: IP66 and IP67 • Temperature Range: -20° to +50° • Battery: Ni/Cd 12V • Battery Duration: Up to 3hrs @25% power other options available • System health indicator: Tri- colour LED indicator
