Te-na- koutou katoa Summer is here and it’s time to air out the caravan, or dust off the tent and think about that planned trip away. It’s a good time to reflect on the year that has been, as well as looking forward. For those of us who have lived in the Auckland region over the last months it has been uncertain times while waiting for definitive plans. As an industry, over the last 12 months, we have been remarkably resilient, our wholesalers, such as Ideal Electrical, have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to sure up supply chains and keep our industry running, this is not an easy task. As I write this, the building industry has been particularly hard hit, with shortages of timber, steel, insulation, and wall linings. We have certainly felt this flow on affect, with delays and ever-increasing costs affecting everyone.
began in Southland and worked its way up the country, where it came to an abrupt holt in Napier due to lockdown. When restrictions eased, it was able to continue in the Bay of Plenty and Waikato. Unfortunately the Auckland and Northland regions were not able to take part due to the continued level 3 lockdown. It should be acknowledged that it takes courage to enter a competition and put yourself up against others, especially when you are relatively new to the trade. Congratulations to all those who entered and were lucky enough to be able to give it a go. Special thanks must go to Quintin Brake (Chief Judge) and Roxanne Visser (Events Coordinator) from etco who worked so hard, in such trying circumstances, to make the event a success.
For Master Electricians, the last 12 months have seen us continue to grow and to support our members. Technical advice, HR, health and safety, and, of course, one-on-one regional manager support, have all been highly sought after.
Another victim of a tumultuous year was the Master Electricians Excellence Awards. The good news is that the Excellence Awards will be back in 2022 with projects from 2020, 2021 and up to the middle of 2022 up for consideration. Entries open soon, with the awards to be held in Wellington in October this year.

town near you, with our series On the Road. These will have opportunities for networking, technical updates, and business information. Keep an eye out also for this year’s Apprentice Challenge, there are some fantastic prizes up for grabs and it’s a great learning opportunity for our next generation of tradespeople. It is every day New Zealanders, especially the small business owners who will lead our recovery this year. WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN
SELECTING A BEACON Selecting the right beacon needs to take key factors into consideration to make the most efficient use of the unit selected for an application. Whether if it’s considering key environmental factors, choosing between different types of beacons and indication variables, an informed understanding will help you make the right selection. When choosing a beacon for an application consider the following environmental related factors: •
• • • • •
Is the beacon to be used in a safe atmosphere or potentially explosive atmosphere such as refineries, chemical plants, mine sites etc. For the beacons used in operations where the atmosphere is flammable/ignitable, make sure the beacons adhere to relevant standards The ambient level of noise (dB) and/or existing light (J) at site The light output required from a beacon (measured in joules) The duration that the beacon must operate IP rating of the beacon The electrical supply available
The environment in which the warning signal is to be installed will determine the product selection. As an example, consider that a signal designed for heavy industrial applications, incorporating a high decibel (dB) rating & light intensity would not be suitable for local signalling at a control panel. Alternatively, a low dB & light intensity would be ineffective for a large factory environment. Beacons are available in different types which offer varied advantages in their use. The five main types include: ROTATING BEACONS: Includes a parabolic reflector that’s driven by an electric motor which revolves around a continuously illuminated lamp on the vertical axis of the beacon creating a powerful beam of light travelling through 360 degrees. In general, this type of

beacon has a greater degree of light output than other models, but this is reduced as the parabolic reflector only illuminates one given point at a time. FLASHING FILAMENT BEACONS: These units are operated through an internal circuit, which simply cycles the lamp on and off. The light output is generally lower as it takes longer for the lamp to fully illuminate itself however the output can be improved using a Dioptric (Fresnel) lens which is placed over the lamp capturing the light emitted, magnifying, and directing it to increase the brightness of the visual signal. In terms of providing light coverage this type of beacon is efficient as it illuminates the whole surface of the beacon constantly through 360-degrees. STATIC FILAMENT (CONTINUOUS) BEACONS: These units are identical to flashing filament beacons with the exception that they do not operate through an on and off cycle. When the unit is energised the light source stays permanently ‘on’, until turned off. The main advantage of this type of beacon is that the light can be controlled by a separate source example a relay or Programmable Logic Controller (PLC). XENON (STROBE) BEACONS: A discharge capacitor operating through a converter circuit ignites xenon gas, which ignites instantaneously, inside a tube creating a bright flash of light. In some Moflash models supplied by NHP, a ‘Double Flash’ option is also available which extends the signal duration making it more noticeable to the human eye. Xenon’s have the added advantage of low current consumption combined with long life; the tube life is approximately 5 million flashes. These units are highly efficient, incorporating a 360-degree light output with the brightest and most effective visuals. LED BEACONS: LED ‘light emitting diode’ beacons are ideally suited for long life applications typically achieving 100,000 hours of service. LED models in
the Moflash range can be selected with static and flash modes of operation. It’s important to keep in mind that the selection of a beacon is used as a visual warning to communicate key messages to personnel in the facility. The variables associated to this selection include the level of brightness so that the beacon’s light is visible across the facility to personnel on the floor. The colour of the beacon dome which depicts different messages to the user example red for danger, green for ok etc. and to combine the beacon illumination with an audible sound which is particularly useful in low level noisy environments where the warning light is obstructed from direct viewing, or as a backup warning should the lamp fail. Legrand’s Economy Series is locally designed and manufactured in Australia
to meet our local standards, is environmentally friendly and energy efficient with 1-3W energy consumption. The range includes: 1. LED Edge light Exit Sign This can be single or double sided with drop in decals. It has been designed for walls or ceilings and recessed or surface mounted with a 24-meter viewing distance making it ideal for general office applications. There is a large terminal box and a slide bracket for easy installation. Accessories include a wire suspension kit, a rod suspension kit and a weatherproof enclosure for outdoor installations. 2. Economy LED Satellite. Designed for recess installation it has a D40 classification, spring clips and comes complete with flex and plug and a large trim. . 3. Surface LED Satellite. Suitable for walls or ceilings with a D40 classification, robust steel construction and a large terminal block, energy efficient. 4. LED Twinspot. For surface mount installation with 2x180LM light output, Ip65 ingress protection, IK07 impact rating, adjustable spotlight head, wire guard accessory available. 5. Weatherproof LED Battens. Designed for use as mains or emergency lighting with an optional on/off sensor the weatherproof LED Battens can be installed on wall or ceilings. The battens come in three lengths (2-foot, 4-foot and 5-foot), 400K LED, colour temperature, IP65 ingress protection, IK08 impact rating and an optional on/off sensor.

It was first used in the late 1800’s to sterilise surfaces, water in 1910 and air in the 1930’s. The application and technologies are so well developed that UVC/GUV is a standard component of the World Health Organisation’s tool kit in
dealing with Tuberculosis and broadly many other bacteriological/viral pathogens. In fact UVC is generally effective against all known pathogens, the dosage being the variable. WALL MOUNT AND CEILING MOUNT UVC AIR DISINFECTION DEVICES These are designed into an application and create an upper air germicidal zone of UVC radiation which is strictly confined the upper air zone. Such systems are widely used to control the spread of pathogens, such as Tuberculosis, in medical settings, this specific technology is recommended with the WHO in combating the spread of Tuberculosis.
