A Record number of Electrical Apprentice taking up the Challenge to compete in the Master Electricians Apprentice Challenge

The Master Electricians Apprentice Challenge this year has hit a recordbreaking number of entries. Over 300 electrical apprentices have taken up the challenge to participate in the competition, making it the biggest number of entries in its 22 year history. This remarkable achievement not only highlights the enthusiasm of electrical apprentices entering but also shows the importance that employers have placed on showcasing their talented apprentices.

Mathew Lawrence, General Manager of Operations at Master Electricians, says, “Over 150 employers have entered their apprentices into the competition, which speaks volumes about the value they attach to this event. By encouraging their apprentices to participate, employers are showcasing their commitment to nurturing talent and raising the standards of professionalism within the industry. It demonstrates their belief in the benefits that this competition offers, not only to the apprentices themselves but also to the industry as a whole.”

The Master Electricians Apprentice Challenge serves as a platform for young electricians to showcase their skills, knowledge, and innovation in a competitive environment. It allows apprentices to test their abilities, gain valuable experience, and learn from their peers. The Challenge also fosters a spirit of camaraderie among participants, promoting healthy competition and encouraging the growth of a strong professional network within the industry.

The record number of entries also indicates that employers recognise the importance of investing in the long term development of their workforce, even during challenging times. This proactive approach to skills development speaks volumes about their commitment to maintaining high standards and remaining competitive in the face of economic uncertainty.

The Master Electricians Apprentice Challenge kicked off in Invercargill on 12 June and travels to 13 locations nationwide. The finals and awards dinner will be held on Thursday 24 – Friday 25 August at the Grand Millennium in Auckland.

IDEAL FOUNDATION GIVING BACK TO NZ COMMUNITIES

MISSION CLEANUP WITH IDEAL FOUNDATION AND SUSTAINABLE COASTLINES

The Ideal Foundation (IDF) is proud to be associated with Sustainable Coastlines and their environmental initiatives. One of the Ideal Foundation’s missions is to protect the natural environment. Beach clean-ups are central to Sustainable Coastlines. They clean up beaches and deliver education to change the behaviour that produces litter in the first place via their "Love Your Coast Programme."

Plastic pollution impacts our environment, the health of our wildlife, and human health. The simple act of picking up litter from the beach helps in creating awareness, which prevents new litter from entering our precious marine environments.

Ideal Electricals’ staff and our valued IDF partners were glad to be a part of this environment friendly event on Wednesday 8th March 2023.

We all gathered at the Sustainable Coastlines Flagship at Silo Park. It was a pleasure meeting everyone from different branches and our IDF supply partners. The Sustainable Coastlines staff arranged a lunch for us followed by an informative presentation.

Afterwards we were off to Te Atatu Peninsula – Harbour View Beach. We were given safety gear and off on mission cleanup we went!

In total, we collected 540L of litter weighing 91KG – this consisted of Glass & Ceramic 248 items & Plastic 92 items (57% of Plastic). This dataset was collected by Citizen Scientists at an official ‘Survey Area’ as part of the Litter Intelligence long-term litter monitoring programme. There was a steep drop in litter density compared to the last survey done which is awesome.

At the end of the day, we were proud to be part of this great cause. With education, awareness, and solutions that we can use in everyday life to help us become more sustainable tomorrow than we are today. Such events helped in team building and working together. Ideal Foundation is always excited to be a part of such programmes. Big thanks again to our IDF suppliers Bizline, Hager, Thorn, Simx, Milwaukee, Marley, Philips, CDY, Legrand, who supported us and mucked in on the day!

Our Christchurch based Ideal staff also put on the gloves for the cause and rallied around Sustainable Coastlines at Sumner Beach for a cleanup on 11th June. Along with information around the effects litter & pollution have on the environment, some group games and team fun, they were able to haul 10 kgs, (around 50 litres) of rubbish on the day. Plastic was by far the most prominent material type in terms of the number of items.

What significant benefits does a Total Underground Distribution System (TUDS) Modular Pit

What does an underground pit need to do the job? In New Zealand we frequently require our equipment to do many different things in many different situations, with unexpected curveballs forcing us to change plans at short notice. When faced with such situations, are the conventional methods working for us, or is it possible to come up with a solution that improves upon existing technology?

The first thing to look at is the traditional concrete construction. It gives the pit strength, but it also makes the pit very heavy, hard to move, and rigid. Changing the material to SMC (Sheet Moulding Compound) has several immediate and significant benefits. Firstly, SMC is much lighter than concrete, the individual panels of the pit can be lifted easily by hand with no need for large lifting equipment, which leads to quicker and safer installation. Secondly, SMC is resistant to temperature fluctuations, non-conductive, anti-corrosion, transparent to radio waves and non-leaching. And thirdly, SMC allows panels to be manufactured with a sidewall beam-structure which reinforces and locks the pit into the ground, making it much stronger once installed.

The level of control and reproducibility possible with SMC is what allows changes to be made to the traditional pit design, resulting in the decision to create a modular range. This type of pit design, not seen previously in New Zealand, has extensive positive implications for the workflow of utilities. With components that can modify a standard set of sizes from 450mm to 1200mm across and 300mm to 1500mm deep it becomes possible to easily order pits that will suit specific applications, moving away from a one-size-fits-most approach that is frequently not practical in the challenging local environment and allowing more flexibility for immediate changes on the ground. This lends itself well to retrofit installations where traditional pits are far more disruptive to insert.

Another significant benefit of modular construction is the amount of space saving created by the ability to flatpack the pit as a kitset. Up to 76% of the finished build volume is saved when shipping or storing modular pits, with all the accompanying advantages of lower transportation and warehousing costs and quicker movement. Pits are more easily transported to work sites and in greater quantities, and once there they are less obtrusive until needed.

Other small changes made during the design process can have a big impact on how the pit functions. By devising a bolt-free kitset, assembly can be achieved in as few as three minutes, which is a huge time saving, and the inclusion of public safety features such as anti-tamper access bolts and slip-resistant Class C & Class D lids let the pit do its job free from interference yet easily accessible for staff.
