AFDD: THE ULTIMATE HOME ELECTRICAL PROTECTION

When Christchurch homeowner Paul Griggs decided to sell his family’s newly renovated home, he was dismayed to discover he might need to completely replace its assortment of wiring in order to assure buyers of its electrical safety. But a new solution for home electricity security from PDL by Schneider Electric solved the potentially costly problem quickly and easily. The answer was Arc Fault Detection RCBO – all-in-one devices combining arc fault detection with overload short circuit breakers and residual current protection. Including these in a new switchboard at the property took care of electrical compliance, was less expensive than full rewiring, and provided the new homeowners with peace of mind, while keeping their insurance company happy too. WIRING THROUGH THE YEARS The Woolston house contains what Paul Griggs describes as a “mixed bag” of wiring. Built in 1920, it was extended in the 1960s to double its size. Griggs and his family have lived there since the 1990s, adding a garage and two sleepouts over that time, and then spending the last two years renovating the entire property for sale. He says the home’s electrics are a mixture of newer, brand new and original wires, some encased in metal conduit. “It would be fair to say we were maximising the old wiring for the modern home’s necessities and the additional outbuilding.” 10 | LIVEWIRE

While the family hadn’t experienced any significant problems, Griggs wanted to ensure the home’s electrical system couldn’t cause insurance issues for potential buyers and impact the sale price. But in order for an Electrical Inspector to sign off on the property’s electrical compliance, he found that the age of the house meant he could be facing a bill for complete rewiring. Not keen on paying thousands of dollars on top of the recent renovation costs, Griggs did some more research and discovered the newly launched Arc Fault Detection RCBOs from PDL by Schneider Electric. ULTIMATE HOME ELECTRICAL PROTECTION AFDD-RCBOs are the ultimate solution for electricity malfunction detection and are an investment in protecting a home and its occupants from the risk of electrical fire. They are combination devices that detect arc faults (one of the most common causes of electrical fires) and also feature miniature circuit breakers (MCBs) and residual current devices (RCDs) to protect against short circuits, overloads and fatal electric shocks. While RCDs and circuit breakers are standard additions to switchboards in New Zealand, arc fault detection devices (AFDDs) are still a relatively new concept here, despite having been mandatory in Canada and the USA for several years. Arc faults can occur when cables become damaged, often when squashed underneath or behind furniture,

or simply through poor connections or old wiring. The insulation inside the damaged cable lets current leak out, generating heat and carbonising the material around it, which then becomes more conductive and generates a bigger arc that is invisible to those in the home until the cable or socket catch fire. An AFDD installed in a switchboard monitors the electrical arcs that occur as part of daily electricity usage on the circuits throughout a home. If it finds any abnormal or dangerous arcs it will trip to isolate and disconnect the faulty circuit before it can ignite and cause a fire.

the building and that any issues within the electrics would be immediately isolated by the AFDD closing off that individual line.” Peter Matthews of PPM Electrical Services in Christchurch (an electrician and Electrical Inspector) carried out the installation and says the combination device is a useful tool for homes. “Arc fault detection is still a relatively new concept for New Zealanders and it’s a good one. They [arc faults] can happen in a newer site too, so it’s a very good idea.”

AFDDs’ ability to detect these arcs before a fire starts means they have been approved by many insurance companies as a way of mitigating risk. They’re particularly useful for older or wooden homes, properties where the occupants have limited mobility, or in rentals where landlords have no control over how many appliances or devices tenants are plugging in.

Peter Matthews was also impressed by how easy the AFDD-RCBOs were to install and the fact they detected an issue straight away. “It ‘red flagged’ it, so as soon as I turned it on it wouldn’t set,” he explains. “Through more investigation I found that particular circuit hadn’t been rewired as I’d been led to believe, and it was tripping on the residual function of the AFDD.”

The new AFDD-RCBO from PDL by Schneider Electric updates its original AFDD that launched in New Zealand in 2016, now combining the circuit breaker and RCD elements with the early warning system of arc fault detection.

SIMPLE SOLUTION FOR A SUCCESSFUL SALE

COST-EFFECTIVE ALTERNATIVE TO REWIRING After discussions with his electrician and insurance company, Griggs was assured that his compliance would be signed off if he installed a new mains board with the AFDD-RCBOs as part of it – a very welcome alternative to full rewiring. “This installation was what we decided to go for, as the AFDD system would identify any issues in any one electrical line, meaning rewiring was always then limited to only problem areas,” he says.

Paul Griggs says he was delighted with the result the AFDD-RCBO installation provided. “Once this work was completed we had a robust and sound electrical system. If any issues arise in future they’ll be immediately identifiable and repairable.” The property sold for its asking price and Griggs says the installation of the AFDD-RCBOs gave everyone involved peace of mind and saved his family the significant expense of a full rewire. “We had a better deal from the electrician due to ease of install, easy compliance sign off and easier dealings with our insurance plus the new owners’ insurance,” he says. “We can all sleep a lot better at night too, knowing this house should never burn down due to old or faulty wiring.”

WHAT IS EARTH LOOP TESTING AND WHY DO WE NEED TO DO IT? The Earth Loop Test is used to determine the value of the earth fault impedance, which is derived from the sum of transformer coil winding resistance, phase conductor resistance and protective earth conductor resistance (in parallel with the neutral conductor) as well as the impedance of the installation (at the point of test) phase and neutral (or phase to earth) conductors within the installation. The Earth Loop Test is done to make sure that the impedance is low enough to ensure sufficient current flows through the circuit to operate the protective device in the required time in the case of a fault. It is also important to determine the integrity of conductors (i.e. looking for poor connections) as well as the compliant integrity of the earth bonding conductor throughout the installation.

HEALTHY HOMES STANDARDS WHAT ARE THE HEALTHY HOMES STANDARDS? The Healthy Homes Standards became law on 1 July, 2019. The Healthy Homes Standards introduce specific and minimum standards for heating, ventilation, moisture ingress and drainage, and draught-stopping in rental properties. •

All private rentals must comply within 90 days of any new or renewed tenancy after 1 July, 2021, with all private rentals complying by 1 July, 2024.

•

All boarding houses must comply by 1 July, 2021.

•

All houses rented by Kainga Ora (formerly Housing New Zealand) and registered Community Housing Providers must comply by 1 July, 2023

Landlords are responsible for maintaining and improving the quality of their rental properties. These standards will help ensure landlords have healthier, safer properties and lower maintenance costs for their investments. The standards will also make it easier for tenants to keep their homes warm and dry. MECHANICAL VENTILATION REQUIREMENTS TO MEET THE HEALTHY HOMES STANDARD All kitchens and bathrooms must have an extractor fan vented to the outside. It is important that these fans work and there are some minimum performance standards: KITCHENS •

In any room with a cook top, new fans or rangehoods installed after 1 July, 2019 must have a minimum diameter (including ducting) of 150mm or an exhaust capacity of at least 50 litres per second.

BATHROOMS •

In any room with a shower or bath, new fans installed after 1 July, 2019 must have a minimum diameter (including ducting) of 120mm or an exhaust capacity of at least 25 litres per second.

Landlords should ask installers for the details of the fan diameters, ducting and flowrate in writing, so they can show they are compliant with the Healthy Homes ventilation standard. IF YOU HAVE AN EXISTING FAN If you have an existing fan fitted before 1 July, 2019, it does not need to meet these standards and can be left in place. However, if it breaks and needs replacing, it will need to be upgraded to meet the new standards. Many fans in New Zealand have historically been 100mm in diameter. These do not meet the standard and so do not meet the new standard. Simx would recommend that these fans are replaced with a fan that meets the new standard. HOW DO I SELECT A FAN? The first consideration is where you want the fan to go. The best option is using ceiling mounted centrifugal fan systems that are mounted in the roof cavity. Other options available include inline fans, ceiling fans, through the wall fans or window fans. If a fan is near the bath or shower, Simx would also recommend that consideration is given to a safety extra low voltage fan which is only 12 volts. Details of compliant fans based on the different mounting options are detailed below.

Installation is up to 50 percent faster with the ‘push-in’ connection system. Even stranded wire conductors can be connected by simply pressing the pusher without the need for any special tools. The conductor is simply inserted into the contact point as far as the stop and that’s it – you have a safe, gas-tight connection. The electrical industry is being exposed to EV charging more frequently than ever before. When installing an EV charging station you will need to be able to test it and this testing requires some specialist equipment that most electricians may not have in their tool kits. We’re going to be focusing on installation of AC charging infrastructure. Do not get confused – an AC charging station is not a charger at all. It’s actually a controlled safety switch that has a safety and communication circuit with the car. The power going to the car is in fact mains power, the onboard charger in the vehicle is where that power is changed from AC to DC. When installing an EV charging station there needs to be some protection against a pure DC leakage current. There are two different ways of achieving this. • •

Install a Type B RCD supplying the charging station. Install a Type A RCD and a charging station that has internal 6mA leakage detection (a Residual Direct Current Detection Device: RDC-DD)

SO WHAT NEEDS TESTING? In addition to the normal testing that you would do for any new electrical installation there is some additional testing required. DC LEAKAGE Check the functionality of the Type B RCD or internal 6mA DC leakage detection. In order to do this you will need an RCD tester or installation tester that has both Type B and 6mA leakage settings (6mA leakage is sometimes referred to as Type EV) just be aware that these are two separate functions and you will need both as you do more EV charging station installations. CHARGING STATION FUNCTIONALITY To do this, you will need a test adaptor that simulates a car being plugged in.

The test adaptor will be able to simulate: • • • • •

Control Pilot Proximity Pilot (for untethered charging stations) Error – Control Pilot signal open circuit Error – Diode short circuit Error – control pilot short circuit

The adaptor should also have a BNC connector so that a scope can be connected and used to check the functionality of the proximity when testing an untethered charging station. The scope needs to be suitable for testing a 1kHz signal. RCCBS AND RCBOS: These are both RCDs • An RCBO is an RCD with integrated overcurrent protection. •

An RCCB is an RCD without integrated overcorrect protection. The easiest way to tell these apart is the rating on the front. •

If it has a rating such as 40A then it is an RCCB (no over current protection) rated at 40 amps.

•

If it has a rating such as D40, then this is an RCBO that is rated for 40amps with a D curve tripping profile.

Do not confuse a B curve with a Type B. The ‘curve’ relates to the overcurrent protection and the ‘Type’ relates to the different types of leakage current that the RCD will work with. The power boxes range from 10 to 250 Amps and are crafted from robust, impact resistant specially bonded polyethylene that is perfectly suited to New Zealand worksite conditions being UV treated and IP65 rated. All units are equipped with RCDs for added safety.

The outlet configurations cater for the most common applications in events, all building sites and large construction sites. “With these boxes, stackable actually means stackable and outlet maintenance or swapouts can also be performed hassle-free from the exterior of the box,” says Collins. Other notable design features include the recessed aspect of the outlets to reduce the chance of damage through collision, multiple carry points and stable, anchorable feet that minimise the risk of toppling and provide great ground clearance to avoid surface water or spills. SCALABLE AND VERSATILE Sitemate’s temporary power solution can be inter-connected to suit any worksite, from the easily deployed portable main distribution switchboard, through to the smaller 32 Amp power boxes or strings of LED chain lights available in 25 metre, 10 lights per chain providing a maximum output of 200W per chain. “We believe the robust construction, the zinc-coated protective cage along with the heavy-duty flexible cable makes our LED site lighting offer the most rugged on the market,” says Collins.
