ELECTRICAL TESTING

OF STATIC Electric motors are the almost indefatigable workhorses of industry and modern motors are exceptionally reliable. Nevertheless, when a motor does fail without warning, the consequences can be costly and disruptive. Condition monitoring provides insurance against such failures, by giving advance warning of developing fault conditions. This gives time to plan the required maintenance or motor replacement. To be truly effective, however, condition monitoring must include ‘the missing link’ – electrical tests. The insulation resistance test has long been the tool of choice for engineers, and this simple test is often the only electrical test performed on a motor. There’s no doubt that this test has a valid role, but it is simply not capable of detecting all of the faults that can occur within the windings of a motor.

Let us look in more detail at electrical tests that should form part of an effective motor condition monitoring program.

STATIC, OR OFFLINE, MOTOR TESTS SHOULD IDEALLY BE CARRIED OUT IN THE SEQUENCE SHOWN BELOW. 1. WINDING RESISTANCE TEST - Used to detect loose connections and dead shorts. Tests must be performed with accurate equipment, capable of measuring down to 0.001 ohms. Trending the results is useful as, for example, a connection that is gradually working loose will show up as an imbalance that increases 2. INSULATION RESISTANCE (MEGGER) TEST - Will show if the motor is wet or contaminated, or if it has a dead short to earth. An insulation resistance test alone cannot, however, confirm that a motor is in good condition, as it does not test the entire insulation system 3. POLARIZATION INDEX (PI) TEST - The PI test is a 10-minute test that is used to measure/ quantify polarization effects occurring in the ground wall insulation of a motor or generator. 4. DC STEP VOLTAGE TEST - Is typically performed at twice line voltage plus 1000 volts. A poor result may suggest contamination or an insulation weakness at that voltage. 5. DC HIPOT TEST - The hipot test simply applies a voltage, measures leakage current and calculates insulation resistance. 6. SURGE TEST - This final test is used to verify the turn-to-turn, coil-to-coil and phase-to-phase insulation condition and is typically performed at twice line voltage plus 1000 volts. It can detect weak insulation both between phases and within one phase, dead shorts, loose connections, and unbalances caused by incorrect winding. When motors start and stop, high voltage spikes are generated and, over time, these spikes can damage winding insulation, as can the effects of heat, contamination, and the movement of the windings due to the magnetic forces they experience during motor starting. Of all the tests described, the surge test is the only method of detecting the resulting weakness in turn-to-turn insulation. As studies have shown that 80% of electrical failures start as turn-to-turn weakness, it is clear that surge testing is essential if incipient winding faults are to be detected before they lead to complete failure of the motor.

WHY TEST AT HIGH VOLTAGES? Questions are frequently asked about the voltages applied to motors during testing. Why, for example, should a 415 V motor be subjected to a 2000 V test? The answer relates to the large voltage spikes that motors see during starting and stopping. A typical 415 V motor, particularly if it is started direct on line, can see voltage spikes of up to 2000 V. To ensure motor reliability, therefore, testing needs to be carried out at similar voltage levels. International standards, including those from the IEC, IEEE, NEMA and EASA, apply to all of these tests. Dedicated electric motor testers have been used for many years and will comprehensively cover requirements for full static motor testing. STOP RUST NOW! Will CorrosionX remove rust? CX is not a rust remover but it will facilitate its removal. CX softens rust which can then be removed with a plastic scouring pad. CX is actually better than rust removers which can be very harsh. If you use a rust remover, protect the surface afterwards with CX.

Does CorrosionX leave a sticky residue? Not sticky but slightly oily. The CX HD film is more like very light grease. Are there any harmful ingredients in CorrosionX ? CX is New Zealand MPI approved as Class C 11, same as Lanolin. Food safe, not food grade. Very low-toxic.

CorrosionX is Simply Better

CX is a faster penetrant and offers a far better lubricant longevity in rust protection. It can be used to waterproof electronics and is fully sufficient at a 1 micron thick coating.

1 can goes a VERY long way. 1 litre coats 1000 sqft.

CX is non-flammable (though the propellant is in the aerosols). It is typically testing to 39.000 Volt dielectric strength, hence a leading compound to stop electrolysis and galvanic damage. CX will not harm rubber, neoprene, insulation, plastics or glass. It will protect and improve electrics or electronics exposed to the elements. It has unlimited shelf life and will not evaporate. Paraffin based.

What is Polar Bonding? This is an electrostatic attraction to metal surfaces by some of the components found in CX. Can I use CorrosionX on circuit boards? Circuit boards are a great place to apply CX. If they are corroded or have moisture causing problems, CX usually restores them. The same goes for com radios, VHF’s, deck switches and trailer equipment. Can you paint over CorrosionX?No, it must be removed which isn’t easy because of polar bonding. Corrosion Xtreme Clean, Acetone, Wax and Grease remover or “steam jenny” (if a large area is involved) is required.

When do I use CorrosionX versus CorrosionX Heavy Duty? Use CX HD to protect from direct exposure to the elements, like salt spray, or occasional submersion. Use either CX or HD to stop electrolysis in engineering. Is CorrosionX good for use outdoors? CX is great for outdoor applications also on electrics and electronics.

CX Heavy Duty will last longer on exposed items like iron pipes, leaf springs and containers doors. How does CorrosionX compare with wax coatings? Wax CPC’S are designed to prevent rust/oxidation, not interrupt it. Actually, they can create problems by covering up the abuse, allowing it to grow underneath. CX is superfast to spray on, then penetrates i.e. into a hydraulic fitting and down an assembled bolt.

REQUIREMENTS AS/NZS3000:2007 Electrical Installations (known as the Australia/New Zealand Wiring Rules) is one of the cited standards in the regulations. Section 8 of this standard prescribes the mandatory tests for electrical installations to comply with the regulations. To comply with these Regulations and standards suitable testing equipment must be used.
